You d be wrong.(There will be an award acknowledging just what a struggle 2020 was for the industry, with a Special Governor s Award for 2020 marking it as “The Worst Calendar Year EVER!”.)Aside from the year itself, the other big winners/losers on nominations day were 365 Days – remember the Polish Fifty Shades of Grey-alike that got people all hot and bothered in the early days of the pandemic? – and the mega-budget Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular doc with the gift of the gab when it comes to animals. Both films topped the noms tally with six nominations a piece.Controversial titles like Sia s Music and Ron Howard s Hillbilly Elegy – which became something of a critical punching bag despite much love from moviegoers, if you look at our Audience Score – also racked up plenty of noms. And a little editorial note from RT: We protest any and all nominations for Hubie Halloween, the just-Rotten Adam Sandler Halloween comedy which is an absolute romp; we have similar feelings about Kristen Wiig s nomination for Wonder Woman 1984 – her Barbara Minerva was one of the best things about the movie, according to many critics.OK, with that off our chest, here is the full list of nominations for the 41st Golden Raspberry Awards. (Photo by Touchstone Pictures)Back in 1982, when he was still working in Walt Disney s animation studio, director Tim Burton penned a poem called The Nightmare Before Christmas, tapping into his lifelong fascination with the spirit of both Halloween and Christmas. But it wasn t until 1993 that he got to see his passion project reach the big screen, with the help of fellow animator Henry Selick and frequent musical collaborator Danny Elfman. What emerged was a stop-motion animated holiday classic but which holiday does it celebrate, exactly?Splitting its time between the setting of Halloween Town and Christmas Town, with a narrative that finds a spooky skeletal hero kidnapping Santa Claus with the intent of taking his place, The Nightmare Before Christmas has been embraced just as much in the month of October as it has in December, leaving some fans to wonder exactly which of its two holidays the movie represents more. With that in mind, we present two arguments below one explaining why it s a Christmas movie and one in favor of Halloween and leave the final decision up to you. Read on to see what our passionate RT staffers had to say, and then cast your vote in the poll below! It s a Christmas Movie(Photo by Touchstone Pictures)This shouldn t even be a debate. It might be true that Jack Skellington, the so-called Pumpkin King and central hero of the story, is literally a walking skeleton who hails from a place called Halloween Town, and that the narrative primarily focuses on him and the other misguided citizens of Halloween Town, but their entire journey is centered on Christmas. When Jack first stumbles into Christmas Town, he is so awestruck by the majesty of Christmas, so inpired by the glorious joy he witnesses, that he desperately wants to recreate it. In other words, he is essentially infected by Christmas spirit, which he can barely contain, and immediately returns to Halloween Town to spread holiday cheer and share what he s witnessed. He decides he s going to take over Christmas himself, and while his impulses are wildly inappropriate and fairly lump-of-coal-worthy, he actually assembles a team of reindeer (albeit reindeer skeletons), slaps on a red suit and fake beard, and flies around the world delivering presents! Are his gifts horrific and disturbing? Oh yes, very much so. But that also plays into Christmas themes, as Jack acknowledges the gargantuan mess he s created and returns to Halloween Town with a renewed sense of appreciation for his home. How many Christmas movies have hinged on the character transformation of someone who was self-obsessed witnessing the rotten fruits of their toxic ambition and coming to terms with their own faults? To top it all off, Santa pulls a little last-minute flyby and blesses Halloween Town with its first winter snow, as if to say, I know you guys are all about spooky shenanigans, but you know what? Merry Christmas. Case closed. It s a Halloween Movie(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie. Sure, there are Christmas elements, and maybe a large portion of the film is dedicated to Jack Skellington literally trying to scientifically discover the meaning of Christmas, but the protagonist s’ name is also literally Jack Skellington. It primarily takes place in Halloween Town, not Christmas Town, and the dominant aesthetic is appropriately creepy. There’s a zombie child with his eyes sewn shut, for goodness sake. That’s not very Christmas-y.Thematically it’s more Halloween than Christmas. While Christmas is a great opportunity to feel weird about yourself in family situations and learn the spirit of giving or whatever, Halloween is a holiday about acceptance. It’s about accepting death and celebrating life, while being open to the idea that there’s more beyond this mortal coil. It’s also about wearing costumes to be someone else for a night, and while that might sound like the opposite of self-acceptance, costumes are often a reflection of the wearer and can teach you things about yourself. Who wears a costume of something they hate? Almost no one.Jack puts on the Santa suit (his costume) because he doesn’t want to be the Pumpkin King anymore; he wants to be something else. When his attempts to bring Christmas to the masses turn out to be horribly misguided, Jack musically soliloquies in a graveyard before realizing that he is exactly the person he is meant to be and that the coldness in his bones can’t be warmed by trying to be someone else. Being Santa for a night teaches Jack the virtues of being himself, like the year you wore heels as a part of your costume and realized how great your everyday decision to wear flats truly was.Christmas has enough films. Horror movies aren’t suitable for younger audiences, and aside from Charlie Brown and Casper, there aren t a lot of Halloween movie options for kids. As director Henry Selick said at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival a few years ago, It s a Halloween movie.环球体育平台下载appSpoiler warning: The following contains giant spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. So if you don t wanna know what happens, stop right here. Sony Pictures released a new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer on Monday, coinciding with the end of Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s online spoiler ban. And it is no surprise as the trailer is a huge spoiler for anyone who has not seen the recent Avengers movie. Although, considering that film continues to destroy box office records, we would be very surprised to discover someone who hasn’t seen it.As the trailer is a spoiler, it is filled with useful information for those tracking the progress of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a few lingering plot points from Endgame, and info on the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. So let’s dive in and examine some of the things we learned from the trailer. It Is Set After Endgame(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)This one might sound obvious, but considering the span of time between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, there was a suspicion the movie might take place prior to the Snap. Many noted Nick Fury s (Samuel L. Jackson) nice to meet you, Spider-Man in the previous trailer, despite both being at Tony Stark s (Robert Downey Jr.) funeral. Also, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently reframed the film as the last Phase 3 story instead of the first taste of Phase 4. Add Endgame’s five-year time-jump and you get a recipe for a potential Far From Home set sometime in 2017 or 2018.But thanks to its opening moments declaring the passing of Tony Stark and the heart-to-heart between Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), it is clear the film is indeed set after Endgame. That means the film, even if it is the last Phase 3 chapter, will offer audiences a glimpse into the post-Endgame world. In the previous trailer, we saw notable parts of New York being rebuilt, which suggests the Snap survivors left many of the parts of the world to ruin after half the world’s population disappeared. Beyond those background details, though, the Snap and the five-year gap will have a very personal effect on Peter as he adjusts to the world. Most Of Peter’s Friends Disappeared With Him(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Betty (Angourie Rice), and even nominal high school bully Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) are all the same age as Peter – which means they all disappeared in the Snap. That might seem minor, but every single one of them has lost five years. It remains to be seen how many of them returned to a stunned family – in fact, we’re still not clear if Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) lived through the five year gap – or the effect that may have on them going forward. The summer trip to Europe may be as much a chance for them to re-acclimatize to the new world as it is a school activity. But as Laura Harrier and Michael Keaton are currently on the cast list, we expect Liz and her father Adrian experienced the full five years of Endgame. You have to wonder how that changed them We re in the Multiverse Now, and Mysterio Is From A Tangent Reality … Well, Maybe(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It seems the Ancient One’s (Tilda Swinton) fears were founded after all as Fury tells Peter the Snap tore a hole in “our dimension.” Peter is also introduced to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man who claims to be from an alternate Earth. We’re assuming he is from one of the tangent realities the Ancient One warned Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) about in Endgame. We’re also assuming that “hole” is how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) managed to get back from the tangent reality he created to have a life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).Of course, it is always possible Beck is lying. He is Mysterio after all, a guy who faked an alien invasion back in the comics just to rob a bank. If he’s anything like his comic-book counterpart, he could using the Snap to win Fury’s trust. Alternatively, he could be a dimension-hopping bad guy with an interest in ending Spider-Man across the multiverse. Or should we say “Spider-Verse?” There is also the possibility that he is telling the truth and the MCU will give us a 100% noble Mysterio. But that seems quite unlikely. Peter almost always gets betrayed by the people he lets into his confidence, and we expect this to be no different.Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers’ Superhero Name(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)OK, this is a small one, but considering no one in Captain Marvel or Endgame refers to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) by her superhero codename, we’re clocking this as the first time anyone officially refers to her as Captain Marvel. We also expect the scene in which Peter asks about Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain Marvel will be a little longer and hint at what Bruce, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and some of the other heroes are doing during this latest crisis.Nick Fury Is In Charge(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Also, isn’t interesting to see Nick Fury in charge of an organization again? The manpower and equipment we see in the trailer suggest S.H.I.E.L.D., but S.H.I.E.L.D. patches appear to be absent on the people manning the various work stations surrounding Fury, Peter, and Mysterio in the trailer. Either they have been removed digitally to maintain the surprise or Fury has a new organization entirely. Is it time for S.W.O.R.D. to make its MCU debut? In the comics, their mandate is to keep Earth safe from alien incursions. Would their MCU jurisdiction include alternate Earths? At the same time, the whole notion of tangent realities makes it really easy for Fury to resume his post at S.H.I.E.L.D. while the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series gets its own world to play with. It still makes them connected, just in a less immediate way.Peter Has A Great Iron Man-level Responsibility, And Could Be Phase 4 s Lead Hero(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Considering Phases 1-3 were led by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), the Far From Home trailer seems to position Peter as the key hero going into Phase 4. Or, at least, that seems to be Peter’s perception. That talk with Happy early on literally puts the weight of Iron Man on him. And the subsequent scene with the NYPD officers raises the question with Spider-Man s reality: is Peter the next Iron Man?Since he still has the Iron Spider suit, signs should be pointing to yes. But it also seems likely that the film will confront this key question: Is Peter a kid, playing at being the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, or is he a man ready to lead the superheroes? It is entirely possible he will walk away from the film knowing he is not the next Iron Man, putting someone else in the hot seat. Then again, the film could see this whole Spider-Man “Home” story cycle in a new light as he accepts the mantle, and the great responsibility which comes with it.Should Phase 4 see Peter s friendly neighborhood grow to the size of a galactic quadrant – or a multidimensional band of realities – Far From Home may set him on this path. At the same time, it may also illustrate for him that he still has a lot to learn before he can lead the Avengers – or whatever they re calling themselves now – in the MCU s bold future.Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters July 2, 2019Like this? This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for Zac Efron, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, and Ellen Page. This WEEK S TOP STORYJOHNNY DEPP TO BE REPLACED IN FANTASTIC BEASTS 3 (Photo by ©2018 Warner Bros.)The news broke on Monday that Johnny Depp lost a libel case in a London courtroom over a newspaper s use of the phrase, wife beater. Within the week, Warner Bros. decided to move forward with their fantasy sequel Fantastic Beasts 3 with a new actor to be cast as the villain wizard Gellert Grindelwald, formerly played by Johnny Depp in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Rotten at 36%). Fantastic Beasts 3 actually started filming in the U.K. in September, and was to have continued filming until February, but the role will now be recast with a different actor, and all of the scenes that Depp filmed will be reshot with his replacement. The news came from both Warner Bros. (in a statement that read Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise ) and from Depp himself, who posted an image of a typed letter on his official Instagram account. This delay in filming also led today to Warner Bros. rescheduling the Fantastic Beasts 3 release date from November 12, 2021 to sometime in the summer of 2022 (though that may have been an inevitable delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic anyway). Both The Wrap and Collider posted speculative lists today of stars who could possibly replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, with only Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton appearing in both articles.Other Top Headlines1. DOCTOR STRANGE DIRECTOR ANSWERS SPOOKY BLACK PHONE (Photo by Andrew Schwartz/©Screen Gems)Marvel Studios distinguished Doctor Strange from its other previous superhero movies by hiring horror director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) incidentally, his replacement on the sequel, Sam Raimi, also has roots in horror. Earlier this year, we learned that Scott Derrickson is expected to direct the long-in-development thriller Bermuda (about the Bermuda Triangle), but that project hasn t started filming yet. Another new project that Scott Derrickson is now attached to direct is Black Phone for Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures. Black Phone will be an adaptation of a horror novella by Joe Hill (A.K.A. Stephen King s son), which is reportedly about a dead cinephile, a lonely kid, an eight-foot-tall locust and a man locked in a basement stained with the blood of murdered children. Blumhouse has already started casting Black Phone, starting with Mason Thames (For All Mankind) and 11-year-old child actor Madeleine McGraw (A Christmas Wish, Toy Story 4).2. ZAC EFRON TO BE STUCK IN THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK FOR GOLD(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Over the last several years, survival thrillers like All is Lost (Robert Redford), 127 Hours (James Franco), The Shallows (Blake Lively), and Adrift (Shailene Woodley and an unconscious Sam Claflin) have pitted their lead characters against nature and the elements. Zac Efron will soon join the club as he is signed to star in a survival thriller called Gold. Efron will play one of two men who find a huge chunk of gold in the Australian Outback, which leads to Efron s character waiting by the find while the other man leaves to get the equipment necessary to actually plunder the loot, even as he (Efron) has to deal with desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, [and] the sinking suspicion that he has been left to die out there alone. Australian filmmaker Anthony Hayes (Animal Kingdom, Certified Fresh at 94%) co-wrote Gold, which he will direct, and in which he will also co-star (it s unclear which role he will be playing). Other roles that Zac Efron has in the works include remakes of both Stephen King s Firestarter and Three Men and a Baby (for Disney+).3. TOM HARDY TO LEAD VIETNAM WAR ENSEMBLE CAST OF THE THINGS THEY CARRIED (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The Things They Carried is the title of a 1990 collection of short stories by novelist Tim O Brien that all revolve around the same platoon of soldiers during the Vietnam War, one of which was adapted in 1998 as the Kiefer Sutherland film A Soldier s Sweetheart. Director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell) is getting ready to start filming a new movie based on The Things They Carried that will apparently adapt several of the book s stories. We can sort of guess that the end result will be more of an anthology film based on the ensemble cast that was announced this week, which includes Tom Hardy (who s also producing), Tye Sheridan, Pete Davidson, Bill Skarsgård, Moises Arias, Angus Cloud, Stephan James, and Martin Sensmeier. Hardy will likely next be seen in the Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage (6/25/2021), which will introduce Woody Harrelson as the titular symbiote serial killer Carnage.4. FROZEN CO-STARS TO REUNITE FOR ANOTHER (LIVE-ACTION) MUSICAL (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)Unless you re a Broadway fan, Jonathan Groff might be one of the biggest movie stars of recent years whose face isn t actually recognizable by many fans, because his biggest role was as the voices of Kristoff and Sven in Frozen (Certified Fresh at 90%) and Frozen II (Certified Fresh at 77%), which together have earned over .73 billion dollars worldwide. Groff may be closer to raising his visual profile with the news this week that he will reunite with his Frozen co-star Kristen Bell for another musical, which this time will be live action. Bell and Groff will co-star in Molly and the Moon, written by the creators of the hit CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, playing an expectant couple who sing songs to their unborn baby, with the movie then taking us inside the mom s womb (one has to wonder if this part will also be entirely live action) where a little girl in a rowboat sings back at them. The screenwriters were reportedly inspired by a real-life experience with a child born with a rare genetic condition that required post-natal surgery (we don t know yet if that part is a spoiler for Molly and the Moon).5. The 93rd Academy Awards were unlike any other we ve witnessed in recent memory or possibly ever before as the ceremony was structured to accommodate social distancing measures brought about by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The result was an unusually intimate, subdued ceremony filled with personal anecdotes and touching tributes. Of course, that doesn t mean things didn t get a little wacky from time to time ( Glenn Close doin Da Butt is officially a thing now), and there were still plenty of larger-than-life moments, from incredible musical performances and tear-filled dedications to laugh-out-loud one-liners and groundbreaking milestones.Recommended: Full List of Winners from the 2021 Academy AwardsRecommended: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2021 Oscar NominationsRecommended: All the Winners of the 2020 Golden Tomato AwardsThings started with a bang, as H.E.R. performed an amazing rendition of her Oscar-winning song Fight For You before the ceremony started and Regina King kicked off the festivities by entering Los Angeles iconic Union Station in a stunning single tracking shot as the credits rolled. From there, we got tear-filled dedications, inspirational speeches, laugh-out-loud one-liners, and groundbreaking milestones. Read on for the biggest moments of the 2021 Oscars.H.E.R. Delivers Showstopping Performance of “Fight For You” Before Winning Best Original SongThose expecting to see the much hyped-up pre-recorded performances of this year’s Best Song nominees during the show were likely disappointed to learn that the five songs were actually shown during ABC’s pre-show. The standout performance was also the final performance: H.E.R.’s rousing rendition of “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah, which incorporated archival footage and a battery of dancers to deliver a chills-inducing moment just minutes before the start of the ceremony. The song went on to win Best Original Song in the ceremony proper.Regina King Enters in Epic One-ShotWe were told in the lead-up to tonight’s ceremony that Steven Soderbergh and his co-producers wanted the night to play out like a film – and the first minutes of the broadcast delivered on that promise. Bringing to mind those famous opening moments of Goodfellas, a single camera shot tracked Regina King – her Oscar firmly in hand – as she walked into LA’s Union Station, through its cavernous hall, and onto the stage. Throughout the entire shot, cinematic credits announced the various presenters (“starring…”). King kicked things off by marking the conviction of Derek Chauvin earlier this week: Now, I know that a lot of you people at home wanna reach for your remote when you feel like Hollywood is preaching to you, but as a mother of a Black son, I know the fear that so many live with, and no amount of fame or fortune changes that, OK? Thomas Vinterberg Pays Moving Tribute to His DaughterUpon winning the Oscar for Best International Film for Another Round, director Thomas Vinterberg began his acceptance speech as anyone might expect, thanking the appropriate parties who supported the film and those with whom he worked directly on it, including the four main actors at the heart of the story. But midway through his speech, Vinterberg recounted how, four days into shooting the film, he lost his daughter Ida in a tragic auto accident. As he paused and wiped tears from his face, Vinterberg collected himself and explained how she had read the script two months prior to production and was glowing with excitement about the film, in which she was originally supposed to appear. Vinterberg closed by dedicating the film to Ida, saying, If anyone dares to believe that she s here with us somehow, you ll be able to see her clapping and cheering with us Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you are part of this miracle. Maybe you ve been pulling some strings somewhere; I don t know. But this one is for you. Daniel Kaluuya Embarrasses His FamilyAfter missing out on the Best Actor Oscar back in 2018, Daniel Kaluuya became the sixth Black actor to win Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. Whether we like it or not, we live in an age of reboots. From 80s franchises to 90s sitcoms, every property with a significant fan base is getting a new chance to tell more stories, so it was inevitable that we would eventually get a wave of reboots of beloved cartoons from decades past. But just because an old title is being resurrected doesn t mean it s necessarily going to be bad.If you grew up during the era of Saturday morning cartoons and after the era of toy-commercials-turned-TV-shows, then there s a big chance your favorite animated series is either getting a fresh start in the near future or has already been the recipient of a recent makeover. It s a good time to be an animation fan, so we ve prepared a list with the most exciting reboots of classic animated shows you should keep an eye out for and a few you can watch right now.AnimaniacsWhy It s Beloved: The original Animaniacs was unlike anything else in children s animation. It featured a variety show format that consisted of wildly unpredictable segments that could always surprise you, a large cast of memorable and funny characters, and references to everything from classic Hollywood movies to the big players in the industry. Oh, and did we mention the amazing songs? Animaniacs had a lot of them. How the Reboot is Different: Instead of reimagining the show, Hulu s Animaniacs reboot actually picks up right after the original series ended, with the Warner brothers Yakko and Wakko and the Warner sister Dot reawakening after 22 years to provide new stories and make fun of everything you can imagine. In other words, it retains the spirit of the original, but updates everything for a more modern audience. The first season, which premiered less than a month ago, is also Certified Fresh.Beavis and Butt-Head(Photo by Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Before MTV s Daria (see below) went on to inspire countless 90s kids to embrace sarcasm, Beavis and Butt-Head connected with couch potatoes everywhere. It was an unadulterated satirical look at Gen X, blending poignant social commentary and lowbrow humor in a way that captured an entire generation. The show was so successful that it spawned not only a spin-off, but also a feature film and a previous revival in 2011, and there s no sign of Beavis and Butt-Head stopping. How the Reboot is Different: Creator Mike Judge will be back to spearhead the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot, which will, of course, deal with meta-themes relatable to both new and die-hard fans.Clone HighWhy It s Beloved: People always love to look to the past to understand the present, so what if a cartoon actually depicted what important people from the past might do in the world today? Clone High had a phenomenal cast of historical figures and great voice actors, and it was a huge love letter to the teen drama boom of the time. Every trope of the genre is explored here, but because of its unique cast, the show was always able to put its own twist to things to hilarious effect. How the Reboot is Different: This reboot is being described as an updated version of the show that will explore high school and also coming-of-age tension through historical figures. Also, show creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) will return to write the pilot.Daria(Photo by ©MTV courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Sarcasm reigned in the 1990s, and no character embodied the sentiment of the decade as well as Daria, a high schooler with incendiary wit, razor-sharp insight, and a great cast of supporting characters surrounding her. Any teen who was going through rough time with student life could see themselves in Daria, a show that touched on feminism, social class, and even race. But those teens grew up, and now so has the show. How the Reboot is Different: This one is actually getting more of a spin-off than a reboot, which is somewhat appropriate, considering Daria itself was originally a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-Head. Comedy Central will be airing a new series called Jodie, following Daria character Jodie Landon now to be voiced by Tracee Ellis Ross as she enters the workplace after graduation from college. Jodie aspires to be for Gen Z what Daria was for Gen X. It s the first in a series of planned Daria spin-offs, and it will be the first adult animated show in decades to center on a Black woman (considering Tiffany Haddish s character on Tuca Bertie was technically a toucan).Darkwing DuckWhy It s Beloved: Before we got a Batman cartoon, we had Darkwing Duck, the best anatine superhero around. He had more gadgets than the Caped Crusader, a suave personality like James Bond, a sidekick who resembled Han Solo, and a theme song you d want as your ringtone. How the Reboot is Different: Avid fans will surely know that Darkwing Duck actually appeared very recently in the DuckTales reboot (see below for that), where the character is reimagined as an actor who decides to take on the role of a caped crusader after being inspired by his favorite movie character: Darkwing Duck. It is unclear at the moment whether the upcoming reboot produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will follow this storyline or continue the original.Digimon AdventureWhy It s Beloved: Millions of kids around the world were first introduced to anime during the late 1990s, mostly thanks to two shows: Pokémon and Digimon: Digital Monsters. The latter in particular was also unique among cartoons for its serialized story that continued week by week, its flawed protagonists, and its surprisingly dark themes. It was a kids show, to be sure, but it also helped introduce those kids to more sophisticated storytelling. How the Reboot is Different: This year saw the return of Digimon with a new reboot that reimagines the original 1999 show as taking place in 2020, with all the new technology we have today. Additionally, the show does a great job of including a whole lot of mythology from latter seasons, resulting in a series that has enough surprises for fans old and new.DuckTalesWhy It s Beloved: The original DuckTales was a phenomenal adventure series that took viewers to fantastical and remote locations in stories that had fans of Indiana Jones hooked for 100 episodes. Plus, it has one of the best and catchiest theme songs around. How the Reboot is Different: For one, the Disney XD reboot has done a much better job of integrating Donald Duck into the narrative, which is a lot more serialized in this version. There is a lot of depth to the story now, and the characters are more fleshed out, finally giving Huey, Dewey, and Louie distinct personalities beyond their different-colored hats. The Ren Stimpy Show(Photo by Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: The Ren Stimpy Show was one of the original Nickelodeon toons, a show that was as beloved as it was controversial for its raunchy, gross-out humor and sometimes dark themes. The series was purely creator-driven, aimed at kids but with adult humor that any grown up could appreciate, and featured a cast of beloved and ultra weird characters. It has since become a cult classic. How the Reboot is Different: Comedy Central announced that they will air a new reboot of Ren Stimpy, albeit without the involvement of the show s controversial creator John Kricfalusi, who retired from the business after a number of sexual abuse allegations surfaced in 2018. As of now, we don t know who is returning or what the reboot will be about, but fans of the characters may be pleased to see them back again.RugratsWhy It s Beloved: The original Rugrats was a clever show with a simple concept: What if we do everything regular sitcoms do, except through the eyes of babies? The characters were likable and hilarious, creating a Peanuts for a whole new generation. The show was even able to play with mature themes like divorce and even the death of a parent, despite also being mostly about baby talk. It was also a trailblazer at times, being one of the very first animated series with an episode focused on a Jewish holiday. How the Reboot is Different: It was originally announced in 2018 that a new film will be made as a live-action/CGI hybrid, but those plans got pulled. Then, we learned just this October that a proper Rugrats series reboot would be coming in 2021 with, yes, 3D animated characters, and it will see the return of most of the cast and the original creators. With a world constantly changing, Rugrats is a show that s always been able to boil down what s going on around us through the eyes of the youngest of us.Tiny Toon Adventures(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Before we were introduced to Yakko, Wakko, and Dot in Animaniacs, Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, and Plucky Duck showed 90s kids that the Looney Tunes could still be hilarious and fresh after so many decades. The main characters were the young relatives of the famous Looney Tunes characters we know and love, and they grew to become just as beloved. How the Reboot is Different: Like Animaniacs, the upcoming reboot is more of a direct continuation, dubbed Tiny Toons Looniversity. The characters will now attend an esteemed institution of higher hijinks learning to become professional toons. That Steven Spielberg returns to produce the show should have fans of the original excited. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

环球体育平台下载app This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Buck Rogers, Cleopatra, Furiosa, The Others, and Tut.This WEEK S TOP STORYMAD MAX: FURY ROAD PREQUEL LANDS THREE SUPERHERO STARS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Director George Miller is getting closer to a filming start date for Furiosa, his prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%), about the life of Charlize Theron s character before she became well, the person she was in Mad Max: Fury Road. Back in March, we first heard that Miller was considering casting Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Emma.) as the younger Furiosa, and this week, that casting was confirmed. In addition to Taylor-Joy (who played Magik in The New Mutants), however, Miller has also cast Australian star Chris Hemsworth (Marvel s Thor, obviously) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played both Black Manta in Aquaman and Doctor Manhattan in HBO s Watchmen (our apologies if that s a spoiler for a show that aired a year ago). Hemsworth will reportedly play a character called Dementus who has a huge silver scar on his face, and Abdul-Mateen will play a character called Pretorian. Those names seem to confirm that the film will indeed be set in post-apocalyptic times, and not, as some might have guessed, before the end of the world. Tom Hardy is not expected to reprise his role as Mad Max, as his character would be much younger, and also because Max and Furiosa did not seem to know each other before they met in Fury Road. There is no release date yet for Furiosa, but George Miller plans to start filming in 2021, which suggests a date in 2022 or 2023. You can read here what Anya Taylor-Joy is already saying about being cast as Furiosa, and read here to find out what Miller might have planned for the prequel.Other Top Headlines1. GAL GADOT TO REUNITE WITH PATTY JENKINS FOR CLEOPATRA (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world still hasn t seen Wonder Woman 1984, the second collaboration between star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins following their work together on the first Wonder Woman (Certified Fresh at 93%). We ve known for a while that Gadot and Jenkins have plans to eventually make a third Wonder Woman movie together, but what we didn t know until this week is that, in the meantime, they will be reuniting for another movie about a heroine with ancient mythologial roots. Gadot is now attached to star in and Patty Jenkins will direct Paramount Pictures Cleopatra biopic, based on the life of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Cleopatra has been a favorite epic subject for Hollywood since its earliest days, including Cecil B. DeMille s 1934 film starring Claudette Colbert and the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor. There have been many attempts at Cleopatra biopics over the last several years, including one at Sony Pictures that in the past had both Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga possibly in talks to star. That Sony project has been in development for over 10 years, and it s not known at this point whether Sony will push forward to compete with the Gal Gadot version, or whether Sony has given up on Cleopatra completely.2. OSCAR-WINNING DIRECTOR OF HAIR LOVE TO ANIMATE LIFE OF KING TUT(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)Marvel Studios Black Panther was an milestone for many reasons, but one of them was that it achieved a level of live-action production design and world building that one more usually associates with animation. That style is called afrofuturism, and we re soon going to get a Sony Pictures Animation feature film called Tut, which will interpret the life of young Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankamun through an afrofutristic vision. Tut will be the animated feature film debut of director Matthew A. Cherry, who won the Academy Award this year for Best Animated Short for Hair Love (which you can watch on Facebook right here). Cherry s vision for Tut will take audiences on a journey through ancient Egypt and celebrate a culture that introduced the world to countless modern conventions and technologies. There is no voice casting news for Tut yet, and given the production time for major animated films, we probably can t expect to see it released until 2023 or later. Matthew A. Cherry will also be producing a 12 episode Hair Love spin-off series for HBO Max called Young Love.3. JOAQUIN PHOENIX GETS GOOD PART AS BONAPARTE IN KITBAG (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just last week, we learned that 90 year old Clint Eastwood is preparing to direct and star in his next movie Cry Macho, and this week, another director who s nearly as old also announced a major new project. 82-year-old Ridley Scott wrapped filming this week on The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, and then in March, he will start filming Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. And then, after that (at which point he will be 83), Scott will direct Joaquin Phoenix in the epic Napoleon Bonaparte biopic Kitbag. The title reportedly refers to the kitbags carried by soldiers during war, and the expression that there is a general s staff hidden in every soldier s kitbag. The ambitious biopic will reportedly cover Napoleon s, swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. Although Napoleon was a popular subject in Hollywood s earliest years, there hasn t been a major such movie since 1970 s Waterloo (Rotten at 27%), the box office failure of which is often cited as the reason why Stanley Kubrick gave up on his own Napoleon biopic in which Jack Nicholson would have starred.4. SELENA GOMEZ TO STAR IN BLACK SWAN-STYLE THRILLER SET IN FASHION WORLD(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although Selena Gomez has stayed busy with her music (and the videos that go with it), supporting roles in movies like The Dead Don t Die (Rotten at 54%), and a Woody Allen movie few people have seen, you actually have to go back four years to 2016 and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (Fresh at 64%) to find a movie in which Gomez had a prominent role (and even that was as part of an ensemble). Gomez appears intent on fixing that soon, with this week s new project, and also the recent news that Gomez s voice role in Hotel Transylvania 4 may be larger than we originally thought. Gomez will produce ( and will likely also star) in a psychological horror film for STXfilms called Dollhouse, which is being compared to Black Swan, but set in the fashion world of New York City. Gomez s producing partners on Dollhouse will include Shaun Levy s 21 Laps Entertainment, whose filmography includes Arrival, Fist Fight, Kin, and Ryan Reynolds upcoming action movie Free Guy. (This probably goes without saying, but just to be clear, Selena Gomez s Dollhouse also has nothing to do with the FOX TV series starring Eliza Dushku.)5. SAMMY DAVIS JR. MAY BE FIRST RAT PACK MEMBER TO GET HIS OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)Over the last 20 years or so, there have been a few different attempts to adapt the lives of famous 1950s/1960s Rat Pack members like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as biopics, but neither ever came to be (though HBO did portray them collectively in 1998 s The Rat Pack, Rotten at 57%). With no active development for biopics about either of those crooners, it s now looking more likely that the first major feature film about the life of a Rat Pack member will instead be about the life of Sammy Davis, Jr. Lena Waithe (Master of None, Ready Player One) is producing the Sammy Davis, Jr. biopic with MGM, and the screenplay will be adapted from the memoir Sammy Davis Jr: My Father by his daughter Tracey Davis. Sammy Davis Jr. had many personal distinctions, including both African American and Jewish heritage, multiple starring film roles, and several songs that made it to the Top 20 pop charts, including Something s Gotta Give, Love Me or Leave Me, and I ve Got to Be Me (possibly a great title for his biopic?).6. GODZILLA PRODUCERS REBOOTING CLASSIC SCI-FI HERO BUCK ROGERS (Photo by ©NBC courtesy Everett Collection)We re all so used to science fiction and superheroes that we can easily take it for granted that they ve always been around, but the origins for many genre concepts are relatively new. For example, it was only 92 years ago in 1928 that the sci-fi adventurer Buck Rogers was first introduced (predating Flash Gordon, John Carter of Mars, and thousands of superheroes, including Superman). Although Buck Rogers went on to become a popular 1930s and 1940s comic strip and serial star, the character has been relatively underused ever since, except for the 1979-1981 TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray), which may be well-remembered by Generation X, but probably not by many under 40. After several months of negotiations, Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent reboots like Godzilla and Dune, is now in development on a new feature film that would reboot Buck Rogers, focusing on a man who wakes up from centuries of suspended animation 500 years in the future. It s not yet known which version of Buck Rogers will be adapted, including for example, whether the reboot might include characters from the TV show like Twiki the robot and Erin Gray s Wilma Deering. In tangentially related news, Walt Disney Pictures is also now developing a feature film based on the popular theme park attraction Space Mountain.7. SANDRA BULLOCK S ADVENTURE TO THE LOST CITY OF D (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)It might feel a lot longer ago than 2009, but that was indeed the year that the romantic comedy The Proposal (Rotten at 45%), which as it turned out, was sort of one of the last hurrahs for the romantic comedy genre as a major Hollywood release (they re more common these days on streamers than in major theatrical releases). But when people do eventually go back to movie theaters post-COVID-19, they are still going to want date movies, so it s not at all surprising that some rom-coms are still in development, especially when they re hybrids with other genres. Sandra Bullock will produce and is attached to star in a Paramount Pictures romantic adventure called The Lost City of D, which is being compared to the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone. Although he s not signed, the producers reportedly also hope to recruit Bullock s Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds to join her in their first movie together since. Sandra Bullock will star as an author who discovers that the fictional city she s written about is actually real, leading her to try to discover its location. The most recent screenplay draft was written by Dana Fox (Isn t It Romantic, Couples Retreat).8. ANIMATED WIZARD OF OZ SPINOFF MOVIE IN THE WORKS FOR DOROTHY S LITTLE DOG TOTO TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Children s author L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books, but the argument could be made that the amazing success of The Wizard of Oz has left such an overwhelming legacy that the other books were not adapted as frequently (or at all) as they would have been if the 1939 The Wizard of Oz had never existed. (Of course, the Oz would has indeed been revisited, usually as reimaginings like the Broadway musical Wicked, or the R B musical The Wiz.) Warner Animation Group is now developing another film in that vein, as the studio has made a deal with two-time Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) to direct their musical adaptation of the book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of The Wizard of Oz, which, as the title suggests, is basically the same story but from the perspective of Dorothy s dog. The most recent movie from Warner Animation Group was the prequel Scoob!, which ended up going to VOD because of the pandemic, but the Toto movie is reportedly still fully intended for a theatrical release (given how long animation takes, Toto is still a few years away anyway).9. THE OTHERS IS GETTING A REMAKE(Photo by (c)Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)It seems like most movie remakes come from about 20-30 years earlier for example, the 1980s had lots of 1950s remakes, and the 2000s and 2010s had a lot of remakes from the 1980s. So, as we re now 20 years from the year 2000, we can expect to see remakes of movies from the aughts start to appear, and one such project made the news this week. Universal Pictures is partnering with Sentient Entertainment (TV s Feud: Bette and Joan) to develop a remake of the 2001 supernatural thriller The Others ( Certified Fresh at 83% ), starring Nicole Kidman as a mother struggling to protect her children from a supernatural menace in their home. The original movie was set in England in 1945, but it s possible the remake may have a different setting (possibly modern times, or any other decade). It s also not yet known who will be adapting the screenplay, or who will be directing the film.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
