rajectory this year, being that she was really influenced by this glamour character, this alternate persona, and also because I think in the previous seasons, we ve always seen her attached to someone, whether that was Penny or Julia or her mother, there was always someone that she was worried about, or someone that she was living life vicariously through.“So it was really beautiful to be able to discover who Kady was as an individual, without a relationship or without a man, who is she? We really got to play with that and see how she grew and watched her really take on her own inner strength and who she is and her power.“The glamour character is Sam Cunningham, who is a cop. I think there s a similar strength that both Sam and Kady have. An innate strength, yet Sam is incredibly determined and very independent, and strong as an individual, but she also just has very strong convictions about what is right and wrong, and I think Kady is similar in that, but I think she questioned it, because, for example, she d do the wrong thing to help the right person — like helping her mom, but stealing things to do that.”Rick Worthy as Dean Henry Fogg“Dean Fogg has been doing a lot of self-medication. He s a very complicated man — I have had my homework cut out for me, every script that I get … Fogg, he is now a businessman really; he is in the business and politicking of magic. He has a very uncomfortable alliance with The Order, doesn t make him happy at all. At the end of season 3, as he does the ultimate chess move and blips in with Irene McAllister and Gavin and they siphon off the magic then blip out, I got quite a few, ‘What the f s?!’ Or, ‘What the Foggs?!’ — whatever you wanna use. What the Fogg!“That night, and online and emails, couple phone calls, people were like, Whoa! Man, I didn t see that coming! So, you re truly a bad guy then aren t you? He isn t a bad guy, just he s found himself in a position where he has to be in business with The Order. They have tremendous amount of power, as you guys know, and he doesn t like having to report to them but he has to.”Brittany Curran as Fen“I m the king … At the beginning of the season, the atmosphere is so saturated with opium that it s like, things are going awry, and we ve heard that Ember is back, our god, so we re just trying to find Ember … so she s just trying to figure out what s making the kingdom go awry.”Trevor Einhorn as Josh“Josh has become Isaac, the Uber Driver, or ride-share driver, whatever legal can let us use. And he is a five-star driver, always has waters, will definitely give you gum, mints … That is the biggest thing that I have going for me. The funny part about it is, he drives a Prius and wears a suit. So he really commits to it. And that s sort of where, he s ready for any sort of exciting adventure in his life.”Summer Bishil as Margo“I ve always been really shy, and socially awkward, so acting was always my safe place, and I d always wanted a character like Margo, but, you know, the industry wasn t changing as fast as I would ve liked to. When I was still pursuing work, there were a lot of stereotypes I was going up against, it was a lot of the same role, and I d always been desperate to play somebody like Margo. I didn t know if I could do it, because I m painfully shy, but you know, Sera and John cast me as Margo, and it s really changed my life. It s just opened up so much more opportunities and has allowed me to be seen in a way that has kind of emancipated a lot of the stereotypes I had to carry with me. I didn t even know how that had affected my psychology until I had to crawl out of that for Margo, just so that she could live. I had to break free of these unhealthy narratives that were limiting me and making me feel bad, and Margo really did that for me. It s been a really strange journey.”Hale Appleman as Eliot/The Monster“The monster is sort of kind of like the dark shadow of your inner child, who s been abandoned and has essentially no one to turn to. He s alone in this world, but for one singular special relationship, and for thousands of years he s been locked in this dungeon castle in which there s been one human life to take care of him, and when they pass, a new one comes through and takes care of him.“I always think of Let The Right One In, if you know that movie, where there s one person of significance who can kind of bear the brunt of all the needs that this being might need. And in the case of this monster, he s tacked to the bottom of this castle and held there because he s a danger to everything around him, but he doesn t necessarily even know that.“So he s kind of this innocent, but he has this hit list, this revenge mission this season.”John McNamara on the Library as a Fascist Power“Germany didn t happen overnight in the 1920 s and 30s. France didn t fall under fascist rule overnight. It s always a series of very small choices, and what I kind of like about this season is, it doesn t start with armed guards storming in and taking over the library — that s, I think, a child s version of fascism. What you re seeing is people with Library, who I think are at heart pretty good people, but they re perceiving the fact that they don t have control as the problem. Rather than the problem is, there s always going to be chaos, and it s how you deal with chaos.“They want to eliminate chaos, so they have really good intentions in a way. And I m not saying that Nazis had good intentions or Stalin had good intentions, but I do believe that it happens in incremental stages, and it s a very slow roll this season. But a movie that I kind of insisted that everybody watch as a kind of inspiration is a French film from the 1960s called, Army of Shadows. Wonderful movie, it s all about the French Resistance, and what I liked about the movie analogously was because the director and writer had really been the French Resistance and had gone through all that first hand and had survived.“He told the story of how as a ‘good guy’ in the Resistance, I mean some terrible choices of who to kill, who to turn in, who to punish, and sometimes you re wrong and you have to live with that. And so we wanted to keep the morality — not ambiguous because obviously there is right and wrong, but that the actions you take sometimes to fight something that is evil, sometimes you do something to fight something evil, and then you have to ask yourself, ‘Well, why am I not evil?’ That s an interesting theme that runs throughout the entire season. The Library is definitely a growing fascist … virus.”The Magicians season 4 premieres Wednesday, January 23 at 9 p.m. on Syfy. ven sort of hesitate to use the word “bad” ― you make choices that aren t necessarily going to provide you with a lifelong relationship. But I do think they have an immediate connection with each other, and that happens in life, too, and for me, the priest is flawed and he definitely is very conflicted, and I believe he is also very much in love.Sometimes people of the church are depicted as asexual or that they re not interested in or have no thoughts or feelings of intimacy regarding sex, and that just can t be true, because that s not true for any human. We all have a relationship with sex. And love. Even if you re asexual, you still have a sort of attitude towards it. I think that s a very interesting thing from my perspective about what actually do you do? What do you do with your sexuality?(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Scott (cont.): I think sometimes in drama, we re told what we re supposed to feel because we make these sort of cartoonish characters, and I think the reason that Fleabag is unique, is that we don t. Sometimes they do things that are cruel and selfish, and sometimes they re very vulnerable, and sometimes powerful. And sometimes they re abusive and sometimes they re incredibly loving and kind. And that suggestion is in us all.I think it s a sort of lack of judgment and the fact that we can do that through comedy makes it special. The Priest is obviously so conflicted, and he has a problem with alcohol. Was that built in before he met her, or is that something he recently adopted?Scott: His relationship with alcohol is not healthy. It was sort of important not to overstate that in a sense ―let the audience do some work ― but I definitely think he has a longstanding unhealthy relationship with alcohol, like a lot of people.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)I m going to be careful about spoilers, because the relationship is built on these very special moments, but the first fox talk,” I think, might also be the first time he asked her, “Where d you go?” when she breaks the fourth wall and looks at the audience. Did you guys talk about what her behavior in that moment would look like to him?Scott: The most important thing was, it s a deep connection. I think it shows how connected he is to her. I think they re both quite solitary characters, and Fleabag s friend is the audience and the relationship with the audience is sometimes helpful and sometimes destructive, and sometimes a way of just avoiding a life and relieving power. And the fact that he s able to see that, and solely him — he s the only character who can see that — speaks to me, not just as sort of exciting television or kind of convention, but just the idea that he, he sees her, he sees all of her, and he wants it from when they first spoke, he wants to talk about this extraordinary love. For my money, I feel like, they almost love each other right from the get go. I think they are definitely intrigued by each other and that sort of deepens, and I think they don t really know what it is. Like a lot of us when we first meet somebody that you connect to and you think, Well, is it love, or is it insanity? The café scene is also a very special moment. It was so real and very intense. First, does he see her behavior as mental illness? And is that tension built into the writing or is it something that gets fleshed out when you re working the scene?Scott: It s built to a certain degree into the writing. Phoebe and I have got a great chemistry going, and so I think we just sort of saw what happens on that day. Phoebe s very playful in that sense, in the relationship  At the beginning and certainly in that scene, it really genuinely is what it is Where are you going?  I don t think he knows, but it s like What is it that you re doing? And I think we can all sort of relate to that to a certain degree. When people are, to a certain degree are unknowable, and you go, “What is that thing? What is that look on your face?”Because the idea of playing with the format of breaking fourth wall is so exciting — I find it really exciting that that s developed in the second series There s a sort of metaphysical sort of vibe in the second series of pictures falling off walls and foxes following you at night   A little bit like love, it s completely unknowable if you re serious, and so it s hard to answer those questions. And the only thing we really do is to dramatize the question, rather than try to nail them down too much, because that then it becomes less interesting drama.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Speaking of the storytelling, the fox detail of the story is the kind of quirky detail that you don t see very often in film and in television. What are your thoughts on the writing for this series?Scott: I think the writing is extraordinary. I think somebody s hair looking amazing the day of their mum s funeral, or somebody wearing really tight jeans to the funeral, or a fox trying to break into a toilet, and you know, partnered with scenes about death and loss and pain, I think it s just so extraordinary, that she writes with such flair and such imagination and boldness, that s really a thing that I want to watch on TV. And to be part of it is really exciting ― it s original and audacious storytelling. And that has to start with the writing, and I think she s not afraid of the grand gesture and to push the boundaries of how we tell our stories. And I think that s why people really respond to her work, because, juxtaposed to that, is a great sense of humanity, fun, and a kind of kindness. I m truly in awe of her imagination, really.Fleabag season 2 is now streaming on on Amazon Prime.

(Photo by HBO)The Best TV Movies of 2019 (So Far)Identifying a TV movie is more difficult than ever. The Television Academy put new rules into place this year that would prevent titles like Black Mirror from entering episodes under 75 minutes into the Television Movie Emmy category. The title s 61-minute San Junipero won the 2017 award in the category. (On the flip side, shorts now must be at least 2 minutes long.)So, when we re compiling a list of Certified Fresh TV Movies, we re faced with making choices like whether or not individual episodes of an anthology film series like Black Mirror should be listed in such a way that they are eligible for Certified Fresh designation as the title s one-off Bandersnatch is.Fortunately/unfortunately, the individual episodes for season 5 don t meet the scores required for consideration anyway.Read also: The Best Black Mirror Episodes to the Worst, Ranked We pulled together a list of TV and streaming film titles that do meet the eligibility criteria to be Certified Fresh, which is a minimum of 40 reviews (higher than the 20 needed for TV seasons) with at least five reviews from Top Critics. We also took into consideration whether a title s primary release was in theaters or on broadcast, cable, or streaming. So limited releases that saw only festival screenings or had very small theatrical time and number of theaters, but then was available broadly on a streaming service, were included as well.Read on to find out which titles in this very exclusive category came out on top for 2019.亚博投注信誉s for all the networks in 2020, so now home viewers get a first peek at the new shows — without, sadly, the traditional photo op with Chris Meloni or the cast of This Is Us afterwards. On the plus side, you get to watch on your couch, snug in a Slanket, with a giant chunk of night cheese. So there’s that.Showtime Sets Surprising Post-Election November Premiere for The Comey Rule Miniseries(Photo by CBS Television Studios/SHOWTIME)Showtime’s big-budget, big-cast adaptation of former FBI head James Comey’s 2018 book A Higher Loyalty just got a late November, two-night airdate, surprising TV insiders who were certain the cable network would drop the Jeff Daniels (who plays Comey)/Brendan Gleeson (as Donald Trump) drama before Election Day.The four-hour special, based on Comey’s bestseller with more than a year of additional interviews, was adapted and directed by Billy Ray (Captain Phillips and Shattered Glass), and is “the story of two powerful figures, Comey and Trump, whose strikingly different personalities, ethics, and loyalties put them on a collision course … [the story] takes us on an insider’s journey down the corridors of power, where decision-makers struggle to apply old norms to a dramatic new paradigm in the face of Russia s deep and unprecedented penetration into American politics, with our nation’s rule of law hanging in the balance. Each character’s actions in these historic months made the careers of some, destroyed the careers of others, and helped shape the incendiary political landscape we live in today,” as per Showtime’s description.Other cast members of the all-star cast include Holly Hunter as former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, Michael Kelly as former FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Jonathan Banks as former National Intelligence Director James Clapper, Oona Chaplin as former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, Peter Coyote as Robert Mueller, as well as William Sadler and Richard Thomas.

He previously worked with Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment, where he was showrunner on Chicago Fire, co-created and ran Chicago P.D., and helped develop Chicago Med. He also helped launch Stumptown at ABC.While Olmstead is expected to work on another Wolf series, the search for a replacement showrunner, as well as the inherent delays associated with pandemic-era production, mean there is not yet a new date for Law Order: Organized Crime to make its premiere, though it is still expected to hit the NBC schedule before the end of the 2020-21 season.NEW TRAILERS: The Expanse Returns for Season 5 in DecemberFans of its space opera The Expanse got an early Halloween treat with a NYCC announcement that the series would return for season 5 on December 15 with three episodes, then an episode a week thereafter until its February 3 finale. ecs think is marketable,” Rodriguez says, adding that this means they have to have original series because they learned “early on” that options from mainstream outlets were limiting. And while they do have name-recognizable content like the original Queer as Folk and Gay of Thrones, the popular Funny or Die webseries from Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness, Rodriguez and Daniels point to other titles in their catalogue like the drag-themed docu-series, Queens of Kings, and Before I Got Famous. And while it doesn’t have its parent company’s juggernaut, The Walking Dead, its TV section does live up to its promise of offering “a constant stream of killer content.” Titles include AMC s adaptation of author Joe Hill s NOS4A2 (70% Tomatometer), and the documentary series Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics as well as original programming like its anthology, Neil Gaiman s Likely Stories, and a partnering TWD’s Greg Nicotero on a revamp of the classic Creepshow. Shudder general manager Craig Engler says “we can do shows that other people can’t” because they aren’t as beholden to ratings. For Indie Aficionados: Sundance NowA SVOD companion to SundanceTV, General Manager Jan Diedrichsen told journalists at the winter 2018 TCA press tour that the goal of both is to find a way to “best serve fans of premium indie content in a deeper way.” This service is the home for original programming like This Close (100% Tomatometer), a rom-com of sorts about two best friends and their relationship woes that’s based on series of shorts from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. There are also series that originated on its linear channel counterpart, like the Joanne Froggatt–Ioan Gruffudd thriller Liar (62% Tomatometer) and other fine options. For Francophiles: TV5monde (and others)(Photo by TV5monde US)Grab the macarons and red wine! This Paris-based network offers a way to watch popular French series with the aid of subtitles (and without the need of a passport). Streaming is available through Sling, and programs include the 2019 rom-com hit Un si grand soleil, which centers on family and friends in Marseille, and the police detective drama Caïn.For BET Fans Craving More: Urban Movie ChannelDespite its title, UMC actually has a rather robust TV section as well. These include episodes of WE tv’s long-running reality series, Growing Up Hip Hop. Original series include the drama 5th Ward, which is based on director Greg Carter s similarly named movie. “We pay very close attention to viewership trends and feedback from our subscribers to understand what’s working and what’s not and use that as a guide for greenlight decisions on any new or classic series,” UMC General Manager Sylvia George says, adding that their primary target audience is black women. “At a high level, the type of programming that resonates with UMC viewers ranges from romantic dramas and comedies to female-driven stories to series that push the envelope in a compelling and relatable way.”For Cinephiles: Criterion ChannelAfter the November 2018 death of FilmStruck, several other streaming options clamored to become the rightful heir to the cinephile throne, and the Criterion Collection’s streaming component is quickly rising up that rank. In addition to celebrating classic and cult cinema from around the world, the channel also has special features like behind-the-scenes footage and a guest programmer series. If Criterion isn’t to your liking, other streamers that concentrate on classic and/or under-the-radar cinema include SnagFilms and MUBI. Services like Kanopy and Hoopla have similar offerings and work in conjunction with local libraries. For Those Who Love The Great White Way: BroadwayHDLots of theater fans would like to give regular regards to Broadway, but not all of them can take regular pilgrimages to New York City (or afford the ticket prices once they’re there). In those instances, there’s BroadwayHD. The service, which Tony Award-winning producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley founded in 2015, offers full-length stage plays and musicals at legal and considerably much better quality than those grainy videos you can find on YouTube. Productions have included musicals like 42nd Street, Falsettos, She Loves Me, and Cats, as well as renditions of Shakespeare. For When You Want Some Badass Cinema: Brown SugarSometimes you need to see some foxy ladies in tight pants kicking perps to the curb. And, for that, Brown Sugar offers Blaxploitation classics like Coffy (plus, send-ups of the horror genre like Blackenstein). But there are also more recent and — dare we say — more wholesome offerings too, like the Al Green concert Everything’s Gonna Be All Right and the family-friendly A Baby for Christmas. For Those Who Want Just The Facts: DocsvilleThere’s more to documentaries than Netflix’s latest true-crime obsession or brilliantly shot nature footage narrated by David Attenborough. This SVOD option is a warehouse of some thought-provoking visual storytelling from around the world that covers everything from Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, a look at the legacy of the controversial yet influential comedian, to a nearly three-minute short on the privilege of having a toilet. For similar options, perhaps with more of a science bent, there’s CuriosityStream. For The Warm and Fuzzies: Hallmark Movies NowSometimes you may want a cup of hot chocolate and the chance to see perfectly lit people in winter wonderlands — even if it’s July. The Hallmark Movies Now option has an assortment of its holiday-themed classics as well as movies about weddings, beach-side flings, and other scenarios that result in emotionally charged embraces. There are television series and specials that include adaptation of biblical stories and classic novels. If HMN options feel too mainstream, there are also OTTs that specialize in Christian-themed programming like Pure Flix and Dove Channel (that would be a reference to the bird, not to shampoo and body wash). For Mainlining Martial Arts: Hi-YahDescribed as “the sound of mayhem, of flying fists and roundhouse kicks” on its website, this service — which is available for a fee as an add-on to Amazon and though Roku and other devices — is a warehouse of martial arts favorites. And that definition is a loose one. The service also has horror films, thrillers, period pieces, and more that also happen to showcase people who can destroy you while barely breaking a sweat. For Supporters of Public Broadcasting: PBS Video AppFrom Poldark and PBS NewsHour to Ken Burns documentaries and Call the Midwife, there s probably something educational and/or entertaining to find on PBS video app. Or just turn it on for some background music; there are also recordings of Great Performances and Austin City Limits shows. For Live Music Without Dealing with LiveNation: QelloConcerts are great ways to celebrate your favorite artists with peers who appreciate them as much as you do. They’re also loud, expensive and usually hassles to get to. For those who can’t (or won’t) handle all that grunt work, there’s Qello. This service lets you watch concerts and documentary footage on demand, be it Paul McCartney or Beyoncé. But its greatest asset might be that it helps cure a nostalgic hunger for artists whom we are no longer able to watch perform, such as Tom Petty or David Bowie.
HBO)The Night King flies in on a high pressure storm front and, with a wave of his hand, commands his followers to create wight bridges over the trench fires, so that the others can climb over them. The zombies crawl up and over the walls World War Z style.Arya fighting on the wall is awe-inspiring and strikes Ser Davos silent. It also prompts The Hound to get his ass in gear to save her.7. “Not Today”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Arya plays a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the wights who have made it inside Winterfell. There are too many of them. So now we know what was obscured in the darkness of the trailer: dozens of wights chasing our petite hero. When Beric and The Hound later come to her rescue, it’s almost as if Arya had given up. She stares almost helplessly when wights attack Beric, which is very unlike her. The trio retreats to a room where Melisandre has been hiding/waiting for them, and Beric dies.“What do we say to the god of death?” Melisandre asks Arya, which immediately summons the ghost of Syrio Forel (not literally).Arya: “Not today.”(Photo by HBO)8. Dragon Fight!(Photo by HBO)The dragons in the moonlight above the storm clouds is a beautiful image – this-dragon-moment-is-brought-to-you-by-Hallmark beautiful. But the scene later turns deadly as Jon and Rhaegal lock together in dragon battle against the Night King and wight dragon Viserion, who tears at his brother’s flesh and snaps his jaws at snack-sized Jon on Rhaegal’s back. The Night King tries to be smooth and grabs for his ice spear, but falls off (not to his death, of course – because that would be too easy). The scene of Winterfell from the air at this point, by the way, looks like a nighttime Burning Man riot: a circle of fire and waves of bodies flowing this way and that.Rhaegal goes down and Jon tumbles off. Daenerys tries dragonfire on the Night King on the ground, but he does not burn (like a Targaryen). She retreats when he aims a spear her way, but Jon pursues him on foot with Longclaw. The Night King raises a new army from the freshly dead, including those inside Winterfell – including, they make a point to show, Lyanna, Qhono, and Edd. Was that Podrick standing behind the Night King before he pimp-walked away? OMG, where’s Podrick?Wights, meanwhile, swarm Drogon, and Daenerys falls off.9. Tales from the Crypt(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion laments that he’s not out there. Sansa says he’d be dead. Then he suggests they should’ve stayed married. She rightly notes his divided loyalties (aka “You loooove her, you want to marry her…”) for Daenerys. The dead rise in the crypt of Winterfell even (thanks for the heads-up, Jared Harris), and dusty, ancient Starks start tearing at people.Next time, maybe freeze them in carbonite?10. Theon and Jorah(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The Night King swaggers into the godswood with his court. Bran: “Theon, you’re a good man. Thank you.” Theon charges the Night King and gets a spear thrust into his side.Elsewhere, when a wight wave threatens to overcome Daenerys, Ser Jorah puts himself between them and her and is mortally (maybe, probably) wounded protecting her. He leans on Heartsbane in his final stand.11. “Arya Stark” Becomes a Verb(Photo by HBO)Holy sh ! Arya killed the Night King. She takes a flying leap and, despite being caught by the throat, still manages to thrust that ancient Valyrian-steel dagger into his belly. (To Arya Stark someone will forever refer to that move.) He explodes, his court explodes, Viserion (who Jon has been dodging all this time) collapses to the ground in a pile of loose bones and ragged flesh, as do all of the other wights.(We heard echos of Jon’s voice: “How did you sneak up on me?”)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s a roll call of who’s still alive: Arya, Bran, Daenerys, Jorah (until he s not), Drogon, Jon, Tormund, Gendry, Grey Worm, Brienne, Jaime, Podrick, Tyrion, Sansa, Varys, his new little crypt birds, Missandei, Gilly and Little Sam (did anyone see Samwell Tarly in the roll call?), The Hound, Melisandre (until she isn’t), and Ser Davos. Where s Ghost!? Did Rhaegal survive?I hit “replay.”What was your favorite moment of the episode? Tell us in the comments!Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Daniel Radcliffe may never in his lifetime escape questions about his most-famous role: Harry Potter. Fortunately, the star doesn t mind fielding fan queries, including those from Potterhead colleagues and the occasional journalist.Radcliffe s Miracle Workers costar Karan Soni, who plays Sanjay, was the biggest Potterhead on the cast, Radcliffe revealed, and he was happy to indulge Soni.“I think there’s like an expectation that I will hate talking about it, which I really don’t particularly,” Radcliffe told Rotten Tomatoes.Radcliffe now stars in surreal TBS comedy Miracle Workers, which presents Heaven, Inc. as a regular office grind where employees try to answer prayers every day. God (Steve Buscemi) is over it and decides one day that he’s going to blow up the Earth.(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Angels Craig (Radcliffe) and Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan) convince God to give them a chance to prove humans are worth preserving. If they can perform one miracle in two weeks, God will let the Earth live. The prayer they’ve chosen to answer: Help Sam (Jon Bass) and Laura (Sasha Compere) fall in love. The angels can’t directly interfere with Sam and Laura. They can just set things up and hope they work. It’s like a game of Sims with real people.“They’re a lot more caring with them than I was with my Sims,” Radcliffe said. “I killed my Sims accidentally. I put the fridge the wrong way around and didn’t realize.”Viswanathan confessed to even more sadistic Sim abuse.“I used to take the ladder out of the pool and just watch them suffer,” she said of her Sims abuse, which shocked her costar.“That’s you killing them!” Radcliffe objected. “I accidentally made my guy die. That’s a murder.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Heaven, Inc.’s interference on the show also has collateral damage. Obstacles they throw in Sam and Laura’s path may have deadlier impacts on completely innocent bystanders.“It does, but it is all for the goal of saving the entire world,” Radcliffe said in defense of the angels. “We’re in a world where virtually anything can be justified in order to save the existence of the species as a whole.”Miracle Workers is a dark comedy that way, but it’s ultimately optimistic.“There’s a through-line of hope even when it’s really messed up and extremely dark,” Viswanathan said. “They’re just sticking together and believing in something and going for it. That’s very much the ethos of the show.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Miracle Workers showcases Radcliffe’s comedic side. He has had funny cameos in films like Trainwreck and shows like Bojack Horseman, and he even played a farting corpse in 2016 film Swiss Army Man opposite Paul Dano.“I’ve always loved doing comedy,” Radcliffe said. “I think I’ve done a fair amount that certain people have seen. Swiss Army Man is a fairly niche film. The stage shows I’ve done have actually mostly been comedy in some way. I love it. It’s a very lovely thing, particularly on a set like this where you just have to go to set and try and be stupid every day and make people laugh.”And Miracle Workers can be gloriously stupid. One joke is just about how to pronounce “gyro.” Most foodies know it sounds like “yee-ro,” not like a gyroscope.“I thought it was ‘gyro’ as well, but my girlfriend — near where Erin grew up is a huge Middle Eastern community — and she was like, ‘No, it’s yee-ro,” Radcliffe said.(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)If Miracle Workers is a hit, there will be a second season, but it won’t be about the same angels. Creator Simon Rich’s plan is to make Miracle Workers an anthology series.“The idea would be to reset it in a different time, place, characters — sort of to do for comedy what American Horror Story is for horror,” Radcliffe said. “Once you’ve saved the world, it’s hard to find where to go from there for the second series, I think.”Whether or not that means season 1 ends with a miracle or we all die, it will be a definitive ending.“The opportunity TBS gave him to do was to do a totally self-contained season so you didn’t have to, as a writer, write an open-ended ending which may or may not go onto something in season 2,” Radcliffe said of Rich s deal. “Essentially they let us make a three-hour film with commercials.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Returning to our Potter obsession (and Radcliffe s patient accommodation), we related that when his Potter costar Rupert Grint spoke to us for Snatch season 2, he said it was weird for him to watch another actor play Ron Weasley in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Radcliffe hasn’t seen the play yet, but not because of another actor playing Harry.“I think I would find it weirder just sitting in the audience and know that people were probably looking at what my reaction to the thing was,” Radcliffe said. “That’s kind of the reason I haven’t gone.”It’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Radcliffe has had a whole career since then, but he’ll always be Harry Potter.“It’s still a big part of my life, but I’ve gotten to go on and do loads of other things,” Radcliffe said. “I’m very happy with how it’s all gone. If you told me at the time that I was going to be sitting here eight years later talking about this amazing, weird series that I love, I’d be very, very happy with that sort of thing.”Most actors don’t get one or the other. Radcliffe considers himself blessed to have both.“I don’t think the idea of me always being known as Harry Potter and the idea of me just being an actor who does lots of stuff are mutually exclusive,” Radcliffe said. “I think they can both be true. So far they have been so fingers crossed.”Miracle Workers premieres Tuesday, February 12 at 10:30 p.m. on TBS. The premiere is available for viewing now at TBS.com.

The project would be the first DC Films superhero movie starring a Latino character.Scarface remake writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the screenplay for the movie and Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will direct the movie about Reyes/Blue Beetle, a Mexican-American teenager who found the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school, per the DC.fandom.com Wiki. The series revolves around a group of four Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma who commit crimes in pursuit of raising enough cash to move to California, which they believe to be some sort of utopia. The show is sincere and funny, with indigenous people in the cast, in the writers room, and directing and producing. It was conceived by longtime friends Waititi and Harjo, an Oklahoma native, one night in Waititi’s kitchen, during a deep conversation aided by lots of tea … “hard tea,” Waititi said. “Tequila-flavored tea,” Harjo added. The friends also were committed to a different tone for the show, one that wouldn’t rely on old, and even more recent, cliches about depressing life on Native American reservations.“We don t want to depress people,” Waititi said during the TCA discussion. “There s so much humor in our communities. There s so many jokers, and it s not … I always say that I thought some of my early films would get negative feedback about them because they were, like, ‘Well, there s not enough culture specificity, and it sort of paints a depressing picture of …’ or, like, ‘You are also making fun.’ They didn t quite know how to take it.“And I was, like, ‘I get what s happening’ … All they want is to see us, like, riding whales, talking to trees, you know, playing flutes on mountaintops and talking to ghosts and learning something from our grandmother. And that s it. That s all that they expect.  And to twist those expectations is a powerful thing.”Reservation Dogs premieres on FX August 9.Also during TCA, Hulu announced premiere dates and released trailers for some of its top fall programming.Limited series Dopesick examines how Purdue Pharma triggered the worst drug epidemic in U.S. history. Ghcxuf Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney)When Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely dusted half of the universe – and half of the Avengers – at the end of the film, audiences the world over suddenly knew: anything was possible now. The duo had done what few other blockbuster film writers had done before: massacred multiple popular characters in the blink of an eye (or, as it were, the snap of some fingers). While most fans knew some of those deaths were likely to be reversed, the countdown to Avengers: Endgame has been filled with as much dread as excitement. The question on everyone’s mind: Who else were Markus and McFeely going to off?The writers were, as expected, not going anywhere near that question when they both spoke with Rotten Tomatoes ahead of Endgame’s release. But they did reveal the places where they’ve drawn some deadly inspiration.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You guys have totally broken the world’s hearts, and fans expect you might do it again. But what TV or movie deaths have affected you the most?Christopher Markus: I mean, the most prominent killers of our popular culture today – they re not killing the popular culture – but it’s Game of Thrones. I still feel disturbed about… what’s his name?Stephen McFeely: Pedro Pascal.Markus: When Pedro Pascal died versus the Mountain. Yeah, that wasn t supposed to happen. That was very disturbing.McFeely: The easy answer for me is the Han Solo in Carbonite. I was not quite prepared for the movie to end that way.Rotten Tomatoes: You guys have adapted C.S. Lewis with the Narnia films, and worked with the characters of Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Marvel here. What’s your approach to working with such storied and beloved works? McFeely: As you said we sort of dealt with it in Narnia. We try to put aside the pressure and the obligation in a way and just try to satisfy us as fans and writers. Assuming that the 12-year-old Steve would appreciate this, then perhaps other 12-year-olds would – or 82-year-olds.Markus: I think if you have respect for the underlying material then you just have to go forward and trust that you re not going to betray it. If you find yourself with a writing gig where you don t respect the underlying material, you might want to think about not doing it.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Rotten Tomatoes: The beloved character you’ve worked with the most is Cap’. [The duo co-write all three Captain America movies.] Did you want to give him – regardless of what happens in the movie – some kind of special moment, sendoff, or closure? Markus: I mean, I definitely have a special affinity for him. He s a guy who we ve put through a lot of hell and [Chris] Evans does a great job of showing that on his face. He certainly I don t want to say he looks tired, [but] I want to say he looks like there s is a battle-weariness to him. And I find it very satisfying to sort of think of all of that while putting him through yet another trial, like Hercules.Rotten Tomatoes: So, we know that the movie is just over 3 hours long, which makes us wonder: How many pages was your screenplay?Markus: Well, [the length of the script] varies depending on how elaborately we described the action. The script actually gets longer as we re in production, because we need – for the service of various departments – to really describe things that we wouldn t ordinarily describe. So it does tend to balloon at a certain point in an unrealistic manner. I would say the operating script was, what, 130 pages?McFeely: 130, yeah.Markus: Yeah, that s probably where we started. We generally assume a page a minute and so we try not to turn in things that are much more than 120 pages. It just was everyone understood it was going to be perhaps a little bigger. Our first drafts were undoubtedly bigger than that, you know? But as we got closer to production and we made hard choices it was probably 130.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Rotten Tomatoes: Speaking of the script… there was a lot of talk last year when the Academy announced they were going to do an Achievement in Popular Film category [which never went ahead], that they should instead honor stuntwork. And we’ve seen recently that more popular movies, like Black Panther and Mad Max, are getting Oscar recognition, as are their directors and the people who work on costumes, special effects, music… Given the feat you’ve pulled off balancing so many storylines and characters in Infinity War and Endgame, do you think writers of movies like these deserve more awards recognition than they get?Markus: [Laughing] I m glad you ve asked the question. I feel if I answer it too honestly I ll look like a jerk! My hope is that whether or not people realize it now, I think people later might look back at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and hopefully they ll look at the last four we ve done with the Russos. That s pretty special storytelling. This cumulative serialized storytelling and the high-wire act that it required of all of us is pretty special.I think to maintain a certain level of character within that, so it s not just a series of explosions… Far be it from me to say what recognition it deserves, but I would love the Academy to be perhaps less knee-jerk in its lack of recognition. I would just say, you know, in all categories, these movies re incredibly hard work. For the  industry to write them off as a puff piece seems to deny the incredible amount of technical labor that the people making the movies are putting in. They seem to me a much higher bar to achieve than your average drama. So, there you go.Avengers: Endgame is in theaters April 26, 2019Like this? This professional, middle-class character, struggling with the kinds of challenges white nominees’ characters frequently do – a crumbling marriage, growing alcohol dependency – didn’t connect. Back in 1995, Susan Sarandon was Oscar-nominated, and won, for a similar role – her character was a nun who formed a bond with a death-row inmate. Were the films in which they featured so different? Tim Robbins was an accomplished actor before he directed Dead Man Walking, but this was merely his second feature, just as Clemency was writer-director Chinonye Chukwu s sophomore film. Sarandon was riding a wave of recent nominations and industry acclaim, but it would be hard to make the case she had as much of an “it’s her time” pitch as Woodard, who’s been acting for more than 40 years and has won four Emmys in addition to her Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Was Lupita Nyong’o’s dual turn as “Red”/Adelaide in Us that much different from Natalie Portman’s Jekyll/Hyde performance in Black Swan, hailed as a landmark and rewarded with the actress’s first Oscar? Both required physical feats to achieve – Portman s ballerina diet and training; Nyong’o’s intense vocal work – and both set the zeitgeist alight, but only one managed to bust through the genre barrier to capture voters’ attention. (Notably, Nyong o s previous Oscar win was for playing a slave who is raped and tormented in 12 Years A Slave.)Speaking of genre breakouts: Was Tiffany Haddish’s turn in Girls Trip so different from Melissa McCarthy’s in Bridesmaids? Was grapefruitin’ any less iconic than McCarthy’s airplane antics? It is all subjective, of course, but the point remains: performances in the same space, in the same types of films, seem to rarely cut through if they’re given by Black actresses. If we could mark one exception it would Whoopi Goldberg’s Oscar-winning turn in Ghost, but it s worth noting what The Color Purple actress said when she accepted the trophy in 1991: She was not the filmmakers first choice, she had to fight for the role, and it was star Patrick Swayze stating he wanted her that finally secured her the part. And she was already an Oscar-nominated actress – for playing a victim of abuse – at the time.(Photo by @Universal)What is an award-worthy performance for a Black actress? Viola Davis received her first Oscar nomination for Doubt, playing a mother whose son is abused by the Church (and her abusive husband); she got her second for playing a maid in The Help; she would win for playing a housewife in Fences. Oscar-winner Halle Berry’s character was living in abject poverty in Monster’s Ball; Regina King, who won Best Supporting Actress for playing family matriarch Sharon in If Beale Street Could Talk, was thankfully just poor. Mo’Nique played a verbally abusive mother who chose her boyfriend – who was sexually abusing her daughter – over her own child in Precious. The performance resonated so much with voters the comedienne famously didn’t even need to campaign for the award.Meanwhile, Angela Bassett campaigned to the fullest and did everything an Oscar hopeful is expected to do and still came up short when she played Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It; Pam Grier in Jackie Brown was also deemed unworthy of Oscar consideration, despite her celebrated comeback role with one of the hottest directors in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino. Grier s is an understated role in an ensemble cast, but that didn t keep her similarly understated co-star Robert Forster from an Oscar nomination or, years later, Amy Adams from a nomination when she played a wise con-artist in American Hustle. The most accomplished Black actresses of our time – Woodard, Spencer, Cicely Tyson, Goldberg, Nyong’o, and even Oprah – all had to make a stop as a maid or slave on their way to the Oscar stage. And what of the winners? Of the nine Black women who have actually won Academy Awards, only three – Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, and Regina King – can boast that they broke the mold, playing in order: a con artist, a scorned singer, and mother whose son was accused of rape.(Photo by John Rasimus / Barcroft Media via Getty Images)The numbers don’t lie: A Black actress s best chance at being nominated for and winning an Oscar lies in playing a maid or a slave – and, at the very least, making a mark as a maid or slave before moving to a different Oscar-winning role. Is that progress? Meanwhile, the road to Oscar victory for some non-Black winners over the last few decades has included playing a waitress falling in love, an inspirational football mom, a drunken socialite, a witty widow, an FBI agent, a boxer, and an elderly rich lady just taking a ride. It’s not that any one of these was not deserving, simply that they illustrate that the path and potential for white actresses aspiring to the Oscars stage seems extraordinarily wide, while the path for Black actresses seems as narrow as an Olympic gymnastics balance beam – stepping just an inch or so off means you falter. This phenomenon is not unique to Black actresses: If you are an Asian actress, your chances of a nomination are even slimmer, and still to this day, more white actresses have won for playing Asians than Asian women have for playing their own identity. And Latinx actresses have not fared Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s opening, expanding, and coming to the specialty box office. From promising releases from new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week in Fresh Indie Finds. This week at the specialty box office, we get further evidence that the 2020 Oscar race for Best Documentary and Best International Film is going to leave everyone disappointed; there are just too many award-worthy features. This week we add a German horror-thriller and dramatic tale of workers on strike in France to the Best International Film short-list and two bio-documentaries that would in any other year be almost assured a spot on the Oscar docs shortlist but will likely not make the cut given this year s staggering competition. And as we look to upcoming indie releases, new trailers from Martin Freeman and Nicolas Cage have piqued our interest.Opening This Weekend
