This week s Ketchup brings you another nice headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Suicide Squad, The Eternals, and Halloween Kills. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI JUMPING THE GUNN ONTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD IN UNKNOWN ROLE(Photo by Jasin Boland/© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, Walt Disney Pictures briefly fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (if you re wondering why Marvel s not moving forward on that movie faster, that s the reason) over old jokes in poor taste were found on his Twitter feed. James Gunn has since been hired back, but in the meantime, he jumped ship to work for Warner Bros and DC Comics for The Suicide Squad, which will be a soft reboot sequel to the 2016 super villain movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. This week, James Gunn cast one of his frequent collaborators as well as one of Marvel s stars. First up was Nathan Fillion, who previously worked with James Gunn on both Slither and Super, and who also had a cameo voice acting role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The biggest surprise, however, came with the news that Taika Waititi will also have a role in The Suicide Squad. In addition to directing Thor: Ragnarok (in which he also voiced the alien Korg), Taika Waititi is also returning to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder (11/3/2021), which will come out less than three months after The Suicide Squad. James Gunn also this week cast comedian Steve Agee to provide the voice of the monstrous super villain King Shark. Warner Bros has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be five days after the fifth anniversary of the release of Suicide Squad on August 1, 2016.Other Top Headlines1. KIT HARRINGTON TAKING THE BLACK (KNIGHT) AGAIN IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by George Kraychyk/©TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)One of the big reveals at Disney s D23 this past weekend was the casting of Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, AKA Marvel s Black Knight, in next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020). Harrington will be joined by Richard Madden, he of Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, as Ikaris. This came along with confirmation that Gemma Chan will costar in The Eternals just one year after she also costarred in Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Minn-Erva. The inclusion of Black Knight and Minn-Erva in The Eternals is significant because both characters were long-time members of The Avengers from the 1980s to the 1990s. Black Knight actually first joined as the 14th Avenger in 1969, in-between Vision in 1968 and Black Widow in 1973. So if one wants to speculate about a future Avengers movie, they re both possibilities.2. BLACK PANTHER II SNAGS MARVEL S BIGGEST RELEASE DATE FOR THE SUMMER OF 2022(Photo by Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios didn t invent the notion of the weekend closest to May 1st being the best spot to start the summer season (that was arguably the 1999 reboot of The Mummy), but they ve certainly perfected the move. In recent years, that has included Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/2015), Captain America: Civil War (5/6/2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5/5/2017), Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/2018), and Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and will include Black Widow (5/1/2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2020). One of the highly anticipated films that was left out of Marvel s big panel of announcements at SDCC this year was Black Panther II, but we learned last weekend that they were just saving that news for D23, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022. No other premise or cast details were confirmed, but presumably, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright will all be back.3. BOYHOOD DIRECTOR TO SPEND 20 YEARS FILMING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)As of this writing in 2019, Broadway singer/actor Ben Platt is 25, and actress Beanie Feldstein is 26. But when their new movie comes out, they ll be more like 45 and 46. That s because Platt and Feldstein have both signed to star in a new musical from director Richard Linklater, who famously spent 12 years making the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Boyhood. That musical will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim s 1981 play Merrily We Roll Along, which was itself based on the 1934 play of the same name. Sondheim s play was set across a period from 1957 to 1976, and as with Boyhood, Richard Linklater plans on filming Merrily We Go Along over a 20 year period just like how its plot unfolds. Presuming Merrily We Roll Along is released around 2039 or 2040, Richard Linklater (born 7/30/1960) will be between 78 and 80.4. JAMIE FOXX AND TINA FEY TO STAR IN NEXT YEAR S SECOND PIXAR FILM, SOUL (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As much of an info dump as San Diego Comic-Con is, Disney s own D23 convention almost matches that. This year, a lot of that went to the upcoming Disney+ streaming app s content, but Disney itself made a few big feature film announcements. We ve known for a while now that Pixar s next film will be Onward (3/6/2020), a modern fantasy starring MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. But that s not all for Pixar in 2020: They also have Soul on their schedule for release on June 16, 2020. Pixar revealed at D23 that the stars of Soul will be Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. Fey will voice a disembodied human soul in the afterlife, with Jamie Foxx voicing a music teacher who appears to kick it just before a big career opportunity (cue the comparisons to Mr. Holland s Opus and also Pixar s Coco). Foxx and Fey will also be joined by the voices of Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Questlove (of The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and Phylicia Rashad (TV s The Cosby Show), with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) collaborating on the film s score.5. PAUL RUDD GROWS UP TO BE ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL IN NEXT YEAR S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Quite the phenomenon when a future megastar gets their career start in a horrible horror movie. Take, for example, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the horror franchise, which featured Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, one of the kids Laurie Strode was babysitting in the first movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in last year s hit soft reboot sequel Halloween (which earned over 5 million worldwide), and she s returning for Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and (possibly) Halloween Ends (10/15/2021), which will soon be filmed back-to-back. Paul Rudd was indeed approached about returning as Tommy Doyle, but due to scheduling conflicts with Ghostbusters 2020 (7/10/2020), Tommy Doyle will instead be played by Anthony Michael Hall. Rudd and Hall may not resemble each other, but if the Halloween slasher franchise now serves as a nostalgia feast, the casting of the costar of 1980s movies like Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club fits that theme perfectly.6. DISNEY ANIMATION S POST-FROZEN II TO BE RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Photo by Disney)Disney has had a mystery project scheduled for November 25, 2020 for a while, but it wasn t until last weekend s D23 that Disney revealed that it will be Raya and the Last Dragon. The animated fantasy adventure will be set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra, which will be inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia. Raya and the Last Dragon will mark the directorial debuts of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, who previously worked on Disney movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. The screenplay is being written by Adele Lim, whose Crazy Rich Asians featured Awkwafina, now also a voice role in Raya. The title character to be voiced by Cassie Steele of TV s Degrassi: The Next Generation.7. EVA LONGORIA TO DIRECT THE FLAMIN HOT CHEETOS MOVIE(Photo by Bauer Martinez Films/courtesy Everett Collection)Fox Searchlight has been moving forward with plans for a movie called Flamin Hot about how the popular brand of Cheetos snack foods came to be. They re hiring Eva Longoria to direct the true story of Richard Montanez, who was a janitor at Frito-Lay when he came up with the Flamin Hot Cheetos concept after noticing that regular Cheetos were not as flavorful as Mexican snacks on the same convenience store shelves.8. HAPPY DEATH DAY DIRECTOR TO BODY SWAP VINCE VAUGHN AND 22-YEAR-OLD KATHRYN NEWTON(Photo by Giles Keyte / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Director Chris Landon is newly available as it appears unlikely that Happy Death Day will receive another sequel after this year s box office disappointment of 2U, which earned just million domestically. For his next film, Landon will cowrite and direct a body swapping thriller. Vince Vaughn will star as a deranged serial killer whose body is taken over by a high school student played by 22-year-old Kathryn Newton, whose previous work includes Paranormal Activity 4 and Detective Pikachu.Like this? The Toronto International Film Festival has already seen the world premieres of several high-profile movies, including the latest from directors Rian Johnson and Taika Waititi, as well as the Tom Hanks-powered Mr. Rogers biopic and Eddie Murphy s return to the big screen. But in between all the buzz for those films, we also got our first look at Hustlers, a based-on-true-events caper starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu, which happens to open everywhere this week, and critics couldn t be more pleasantly surprised. Loosely adapted from a New York Magazine piece published in 2015, the story revolves around a group of enterprising strippers at a New York City club, led by a seasoned vet (Lopez) and her eager protege (Wu), who decide to carry out some financial justice on their wealthy clientele in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Critics say Hustlers is not only a satisfying chronicle of cosmic comeuppance, but also an intelligently crafted satire that s smart enough not to let everyone off the hook, and most agree that Lopez s performance in particular is worth the price of admission.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
1. THREE OF MARVEL S STARS CIRCLING STEVEN SODERBERGH S NEXT(Photo by Marvel Studios)After taking a sabbatical in 2012 and 2013, director Steven Soderbergh came back with a flurry of activity that continued this year with two films on Netflix (High Flying Bird and The Laundromat) and one that has already wrapped for next year called Let Them All Talk. Soderbergh s next film is expected to be Kill Switch, a 1950s crime drama set in Detroit from screenwriter Ed Solomon (Men in Black, co-writer of next year s Bill Ted Face the Music). He is reportedly now in negotiations with three actors who are all famously known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Josh Brolin (Thanos), Don Cheadle (War Machine), and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier). If they sign on, the three would play criminals who plot a home invasion only to wonder if they have been set up in a double cross. Kill Switch is currently an independent production, but it s expected to be shopped around to major studios, based on its Marvel-level star power.2. DISNEY SCHEDULES THE KING S MAN, THE LAST DUEL, AND FOUR MARVEL MOVIES FOR 2023(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As happens every year around this time, each major studio will be making major release date announcements soon, and this year, it started with arguably the biggest player on the field right now, Disney. Let s start by discussing the most mysterious dates, which are for untitled Marvel movies in 2023, on February 17, May 5, July 28, and November 3. These dates are on top of the movies we know about for 2020, 2021, and 2022, and also on dates in 2022 that don t yet have titles specified yet. We can, however, make some educated guesses about what films might be scheduled for 2022 and 2023, based on the films that haven t been dated yet, and those titles include the sequels Ant-Man 3, Captain Marvel 2, Deadpool 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well as the reboots of Blade, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. Disney also pushed The King s Man back from 2/14/2020 to September 18, 2020 and scheduled Ridley Scott s The Last Duel for a platform release starting on December 25, 2020 that will expand wide on January 8, 2021.3. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY STAR JOINING MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 (AND PROBABLY 8)  (Photo by Marvel Studios)It s something of an understatement that when Disney fired (before eventually rehiring) director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, they also inadvertently threw the schedules of the film s cast sort of out of whack, and we re still seeing the ramifications. One of those available co-stars is Pom Klementieff, A.K.A. Mantis, who joined the franchise with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Screenwriter and director Christopher McQuarrie took to Twitter this week to announce that Klementieff will be joining the Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible 7 (7/23/2021), and if we take his use of the #MI78 hashtag literally, also for Mission: Impossible 8 (8/5/2022). The tweet didn t specify what Klementieff s role might be, but her reply, Mischief: accepted, might give us a hint.4. NEXT STAR WARS MOVIE STILL SCHEDULED FOR 2022, STILL SHROUDED IN MYSTERY (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently departed the Star Wars project that had been scheduled for December, 2022, but Disney has confirmed that they are still scheduling a Star Wars movie for that date (12/16/2022). Having said that, Disney is reportedly not yet ready to specify who their new Star Wars director will be, and will make that announcement in early 2020. Jon Favreau, who is currently basking in warm reviews for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian (Fresh at 89%), is reportedly one of the figures whose responsibilities are being stepped up at Lucasfilm. What we do know this week, however, is that the director of the 2022 Star Wars won t be Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), and it won t be Kevin Feige s project either. Who do you think should direct the next Star Wars?

(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If the footage from the Avengers: Endgame trailers is to be believed, the original Avengers will be reunited to avenge the loss of their friends, and well, half of the universe. To do this, they’ll need a clean shave (lookin’ at you Cap), new haircuts (Hello Hawkeye), and superheroes from every Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to help them. We don’t know what will happen after the dust settles (or reforms into our favorite superheroes), but we do know it will be a colossal conclusion to the successful 10-film third phase of the MCU.In honor of the grand finale to Phase 3, and in preparation for a new wave of heroes taking over, we’ve done a Tomatometer deep dive into the 21 films that make up the three phases of the MCU so far. The result? Eighteen fascinating – we hope! – stats about the MCU, covering every one of the Marvel Studios films released since 2008. Dig in below, and let us know in the comments whether you agree or disagree with the Tomatometer s findings.1. THE AVERAGE TOMATOMETER AND AUDIENCE SCORES FOR THE ENTIRE MCU ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL — JUST 1.7% APART.(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Average Audience Score: 82.1% | Average Tomatometer Score: 83.8% The average Audience Score for every film in the MCU is 82.1%, while the average Tomatometer score is 83.8% — so much for pretentious critics! A 1.7% split is almost unheard of with single films at Rotten Tomatoes, let alone when averaging out scores across 21 movies. Critics and fans: Assemble!2. THE IRON MAN, THOR, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA TRILOGIES EACH HAD DIFFERENT TOMATOMETER TRAJECTORIESIron Man (93%) | Iron Man 3 (79%) | Iron Man 2 (73%)Thor: Ragnarok (92%) | Thor (77%) | Thor: The Dark World (67%)Captain America: Civil War (91%) | Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%) | Captain America: The First Avenger (80%)It’s fitting that franchises featuring playboy billionaires, Asgardian gods, and a clean-cut super soldier would have Tomatometer trajectories as distinct as their titular heroes. The Iron Man trilogy started super Fresh (93%) and its sequels couldn’t recapture the first installment s glory, whereas Thor and Captain America finished very strong (91%, 92%) with the highest Tomatometer-rated movies in their trilogies. Only Captain America avoided a sophomore slump with Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%), while Thor: Ragnarok (92%) totally redeemed its franchise by making a 25% improvement after the near-Rotten Thor: The Dark World (67%).3. BLACK PANTHER IS THE TOMATOMETER KING.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)When looking at the Tomatometer averages for superheroes who have been in at least three MCU movies, they don’t get any better than T’Challa’s 91% Tomatometer average. He has appeared in Captain America: Civil War (91%), Black Panther (97%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%). Also, the 97% Tomatometer score for Black Panther is the best in the MCU.4. Iron Man has the highest Tomatometer and Audience Score combined average: 92%.Talk about strong beginnings: 2008’s Iron Man comes out on top when you average out each film’s Tomatometer and Audience Score. The Tomatometer score for Iron Man is 93% and the Audience Score is 91%, making for an average between the two of 92%. We know a certain “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” who would be very happy to hear this.5. THE BEST TOMATOMETER STREAK HAPPENED BETWEEN 2017 and 2018. Phase 3’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Black Panther (97%), Avengers: Infinity War (85%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) all have above-average Tomatometer scores for the MCU (the MCU average being 83.8%) and average a stellar 90.8% on the Tomatometer. It’s a Pixar-level run that was capped off by Black Panther receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.6. THE WORST TOMATOMETER RUN HAPPENED BETWEEN 2008 and 2012.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Nowadays, after all of the Tomatometer success the MCU has enjoyed, it’s hard to believe that The Incredible Hulk (67%), Iron Man 2 (73%), and Thor (77%) couldn t muster Tomatometer scores above 80%. Those scores aren’t bad at all, but by modern MCU standards, they’re a little lacking. We can’t be too rough on these films though, because the MCU was still in Phase 1, and the next films released were Captain American at 80% and the 92% Tomatometer-rated The Avengers.7. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most loved brand in the MCU, according to the average Audience Scores for their movies (89.5%).Other brands — heroes with one sequel or more — still don’t fare too badly: Captain America (85%), Ant-Man (81%), Iron Man (80%), and Thor (79.6%).Turns out people love A-holes who save the galaxy while listening to awesome music. The James Gunn-directed movies have a totally different vibe to their MCU counterparts (OK, Thor: Ragnarok gives us some GOTG feels), and audiences have latched onto it. You have to admire how Gunn,  the maestro behind Super and Slither, has managed to bring some of his trademark oddness — a severed toe, Jackson Pollock paintings, and a villain who named himself “Taserface” — into the mainstream superhero movie domain.8. Captain America is on the best roll: Tomatometer scores have improved for each successive Cap’ movie (80%, 90%, 91%). (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)It is the only series in the MCU (and among other superhero trilogies) to see this trend. The Captain America series reigns over all MCU trilogies (Iron Man, Thor) when it comes to Tomatometer scores — its three-film average of 87% bests the rest. Also, it is the only superhero trilogy ever to start Fresh and get better with each installment. This is something Thor, Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man, Blade, Wolverine, and the X-Men can’t claim.9. THE TOMATOMETER AVERAGES DROP WHEN DIRECTORS COME BACK TO DIRECT A SECOND OR THIRD FILM (89% first 82.5% second or third)Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp), and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War) have directed 11 of the 21 released MCU films. The average for their first features is an excellent 89%; however, the average for the second or third films is 82.5%. All of their follow-up films were Fresh, mind you. And we re excited to see if Black Panther director Ryan Coogler can give the 82.5% average a boost when he returns to direct the sequel.10. THIRD MOVIES IN FRANCHISES HAVE THE BEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America: Civil War (91%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Iron Man 3 (79%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%) have an excellent 86.75% Tomatometer average. On its own, the 86.75% average would be impressive, but when compared to the 85% and 79% averages for first and second franchise films in the MCU, it proves that the third time s a charm — according to the Tomatometer.11. Critics and audiences prefer MCU films that are over two hours.More is more in the MCU: The 15 movies in the collection that run longer than 2 hours have a much higher Tomatometer average than their five under-120-minute counterparts (86.7% compared to 76.6%). It’s a coincidence, but it’s worth noting that The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (67%) are the lowest Tomatometer-rated movies and both have 112-minute running times. Good omen: Avengers: Endgame is apparently 182 minutes.12. MCU movies featuring human villains have a higher Tomatometer average.(Photo by © Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Human Villains: 88.75% | Enhanced Humans: 80.8% | Non-Humans: 80.8%Unlike MCU movies involving villainous gods or bad guys who turn themselves into wild creatures, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Black Panther all feature human villains who don’t have special powers (to begin with) and work on the fringes in order to implement their plans. Critics seem to like this approach. Perhaps these villains connect because of their relatable, human motivations — Erik Killmonger wants to right worldly wrongs, Zemo seeks revenge, Michael Keaton s Vulture is after his version of the American Dream, and no one is getting in his way. Hela, on the other hand, wants to rule the universe — something only a couple of critics we know could relate to.13. FEWER DEATHS = BETTER TOMATOMETER SCORES.Of the 21 films in the MCU, only Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) feature fewer than 10 deaths perpetrated by the heroes or villains, and their Tomatometer average is 90%. On the flip side, the Tomatometer average for the six most carnage-heavy MCU movies – among them, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: The Dark World – is 84.8%. That s dragged down by The Dark World, but still, maybe Thanos should’ve only killed an eighth of the population.14. PHASE 3 CURRENTLY HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE OF THE MCU PHASES, WITH AN AWESOME 88.3%.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It’s kinda crazy that the first nine films of the eventual 10 films that will make up Phase Three of the MCU have an average Tomatometer score of 88.3%. The creative team at Marvel has been able to fine-tune its formula to the point where the lowest score of the Phase 3 movies belongs to the Certified  Fresh Captain Marvel, at 78%. The highest score belongs to the wildly popular Black Panther (97%). Phase 1 has an average Tomatometer of 80.3%, and Phase 2’s average is 80.6%. If the pattern of phase-on-phase growth were to continue, look for Phase 4 to pull off the near-impossible and collect an average of close to 100%. (Unless they break the Tomatometer, it ain’t gonna happen).15. COMEDY-HEAVY MCU MOVIES HAVE A HIGHER TOMATOMETER AVERAGE THAN MORE SERIOUS MCU FILMS (87.1% 82.2%).The main reason we wanted to drop this statistic is so we could discuss the greatness of Luis in the Ant-Man franchise. Sure, we love Korg (Thor: Ragnarok), Ned (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Mantis (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), but they don’t have the storytelling chops that Luis has. Michael Peña’s portrayal of the ex-con who becomes a security consultant is pitch perfect and we can’t get enough of his truth-serum arguments and one-punch knockouts. It won’t happen, but we hope Luis pops up in Avengers: Endgame and saves the day — or at least drops some funny one-liners.16. MCU movies featuring female superheroes have higher Tomatometer (85%) and Audience Score averages (83.5%) than the MCU movies that don’t (80.8%, 78.6%).(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Captain Marvel is the only female-led superhero film in the MCU and won’t have any company in that tier until Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow hits theaters in 2020. However, movies featuring Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and/or Gamora (Zoe Saldana) have higher Tomatometer and Audience Scores on average than their more male-dominated counterparts.17. MCU movies featuring at least five superheroes teaming up have a higher Tomatometer average (87.3%) than their lone-wolf counterparts (82.1%).MCU movies that feature at least five superheroes teaming up to form a supergroup have a solid 87.3% Tomatometer average. These films include The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok (yep, we’re considering Heimdall in our count), and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s hardly a surprise these movies score so well. The best moments of the MCU often come from the camaraderie of super crews as they battle various hordes, or each other, and the universe’s big “wow” moments are usually big team-ups — think of the “gang’s all here” slow-motion shot at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, or seeing Ant-Man steal Captain America’s shield from Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.18. Tony Stark = Box office gold.(Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)So, this isn t a Tomatometer stat, but it s damn impressive. The Iron Man trilogy may not have the highest Tomatometer average, but it is the highest grossing trilogy with a massive .7 billion worldwide haul (counting inflation). Seems that audiences love Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Tony Stark, and his appearances in non-Iron Man specific movies always guarantee success. He appears in five of the six highest-grossing Marvel movies (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War), and, with Avengers: Endgame coming up, his worldwide tally will easily pass billion. If Avengers: Endgame is Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel swan song, no one can say the team at the big M didn’t get their money’s worth from him.Like this? After a longer-than-expected wait, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is finally here, premiering to Disney+ on Friday, March 19. And while it s been nearly two years since Avengers: Endgame first premiered in theaters, the story (and some of the major plot-points therein) are still having an impact on our heroes Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) closest friends never were top-tier in the Avengers franchise, but it looks like The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is aiming to change that. Can Sam and Bucky rise to the challenge against a mysterious new foe, while also reconciling with their own pasts in order to see where they fit in a post-Endgame world without Captain America? And, more importantly, will the fans want to come along for the ride? Here s what critics are saying about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode 1 (note: reviews are posted under each episode —rather than on the season 1 page — since critics are supplied with new episodes each week just before their debut):HOW ARE ANTHONY MACKIE AND SEBASTIAN STAN?Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are on top form, with the latter really given the chance to shine as Bucky struggles to find his place in the world. His peaceful sabbatical in Wakanda as the White Wolf is over, so what happens when he’s confronted by the sins of his past? That’s a question this series looks to be setting out to answer, and if this first episode is any indication, that could take the character to some extraordinary places. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comMackie and Stan stretch nicely in their expanded roles, finding room to play with both high drama and dark comedy, respectively — an odd couple in emotional beats as much as their actual character pairing. Stan finds touching humor in Bucky s impossible circumstances (yes, we get Bucky on a date, and it is everything), and Mackie s expressive eyes and face bookend the episode with two wordless yet striking scenes. We don t need any explanation for Sam s grief, doubt, and disappointment when we watch the actor in those moments. Proma Khosla, MashableBetween the jaw-clenched brooding and reflective staring, Mackie and Stan find small but meaningful moments to illustrate their innate charms. Mackie’s smile has a natural glow that’s impossible to resist, and he gets to crack it a few times while “Uncle Sam” (yup) jokes with his young nephews or cajoles his sister into a new business plan. Stan, meanwhile, has this simple little moment with a Maneki-neko that’s destined for meme glory (while still conveying Bucky’s deep desire for the world to stop moving, just for a second, so he can catch up). Once these two get together, making enough time for fans to enjoy their natural charisma among the requisite action scenes may be the show’s greatest challenge. Ben Travers, IndieWireFor Mackie — a prolific character actor many first noticed in his role in “Half Nelson” fifteen years ago — this is an overdue moment in the sun. Mackie’s work in the Marvel films has been consistently strong but somewhat underwritten, given the magnitude of his talent. What is striking about his presence here is that he is permitted to embody complexity. Daniel D Addario, VarietyDOES IT STRIKE A GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN ACTION AND DRAMA?(Photo by © Disney+, @ Marvel Studios)On the surface, the action sequences are arguably some of the best seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Dewey Singleton, AwardsWatchThe trailers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier promised a lot of action in this series, and the first episode doesn t have much of it. The few action sequences that are in the premiere are stellar, but this is a show that doesn t mind taking its time. Charlie Ridgely, ComicBook.comTonally it’s along the lines of The Winter Soldier and the start of Civil War, at least regarding political jockeying and America-centric military issues. That’s both good and bad. On the one hand, the series could delve into some very worthy considerations of what it means to serve, to come home, to feel unmoored by a world that has moved past you; it could even reach Wanda-levels of introspection and emotional resonance regarding consequence. On the other, it could devolve into more of how this first episode starts: Call of Duty-esque mumbo jumbo, murder, explosions. Allison Keene, Paste MagazineHOW DOES IT PORTRAY THE POST-BLIP WORLD?(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios)With this show, we’re able to get more of Sam’s backstory, which hasn’t been much of a focus previously. Poised to perhaps take the reigns from Steve Rogers, we’re able to connect with him on another level; learning more about his family and life before The Avengers. And we’ll also see how he’s dealing with returning post-“blip”, having missed five years, and what that experience is like. Jordi Sirkin, Jordi Reviews ItBy honing in on Sam’s anxiety as a black man on the precipice of taking up the moniker of America’s Aryan saviour, the writers have added a layer of complexity to his character that we hadn’t seen before. Mackie, too, steps up to the plate in a big way, exhibiting a rawness that is hard to come by in superhero fare. Ben Allen, GQ Magazine [UK]The Falcon show features the boffo action opening, and also a richer exploration of the lives of those left behind in the Snap and of the internal contradictions of being a Black superhero in a country that doesn t fully embrace Blackness than Marvel has ever approached. Daniel Fienberg, Hollywood ReporterSpellman and his writers have a blast with the post-Endgame world, using the space allowed a TV series to ask questions that movies simply don’t have time to address. Do Avengers get paid? What actually happens to a nation’s infrastructure when billions of people reappear after five years? The nerdy world-building is given room to breathe and it’s a hoot. Jacob Hall, SlashFilmNow, with his mind finally free of Hydra s influence, Bucky is a 104-year-old man trying to find peace — or at least his version of it. In many ways, Bucky s story is a sadder version of the one presented by Steve Rogers. After Steve was thawed out from the ice by Nick Fury, fans only got to see brief glimpses of him readjusting to modern society. The Falcon and Winter Soldier gives viewers more time to see Bucky attempt his rehabilitation tour. Tim Adams, CBRIS THE PRODUCTION VALUE WORTHY OF THE MCU?Primetime Emmy–nominated director Kari Skogland (The Handmaid’s Tale; The Loudest Voice) is easily the biggest standout here, as she brings a very unique eye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the camera angles she utilizes throughout the first episode feel so intimate, it’s almost like you’re inside the characters’ heads, a trick that works especially well in Bucky’s therapy scene. The premiere does feel familiar — staying true to the tone set by the Russo Brothers in The Winter Soldier and Civil War — but under her direction, everything feels oddly fresh and exciting at the same time. Rohan Patel, ComicBookMovie.comThe excellent production values and interesting writing/directing is what make The Falcon and The Winter Soldier worth watching. Allison Skornick-Rose, Flick DirectANY FINAL THOUGHTS?(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios)As enjoyable as it is to catch up with the two leads (while being treated to some jaw-dropping action), this is definitely something of a slow burn which drops plenty of hints about what’s to come without rushing into bringing in characters like Sharon Carter and Zemo. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comWith a timeliness its creators could not have predicted, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” will likely grow to feel as necessary to our national conversation as “Wandavision” did this winter. Possibly even more so, with themes of national chaos and what “American values” really mean. And, maybe most importantly, how we move forward. Brigid Presecky, Impressionist MediaThe series has so much inherent potential to be a breakthrough moment for action storytelling, so long as it leans more into the unique skills of its nimble characters, and not just what makes them flashy in short bursts. Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” has yet to reach its ideal cruising altitude but it’s smooth, slow climb that promises to take viewers to new, exciting destinations. Lorraine Ali, Los Angeles TimesThe Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres Friday, March 19, on Disney+.

Ghcxuf (Photo by © Warner Bros. )Do you like your Harry Potter films light and frothy – like the early years? Or do you prefer your Wizarding World all broody and dark – like the later years? Perhaps your Potterverse sweet spot is in the middle films, like Goblet of Fire, which expertly blend both, capturing Harry, Hermione, and Ron at a time when they’re still innocent enough to be awed by the magic around them, and when He Who Must Not Be Named is moving from lingering threat to fully formed strange-nosed wand-swinger.Whichever way you lean Potter-wise, you’re likely to have some strong thoughts about our ranking of the Harry Potter films. Our list orders the movies by their Tomatometer score, which reflects the percentage of critics that gave the films a thumbs up. Not surprisingly, all eight Harry Potter movies score very well according to the Tomatometer, with each earning a Certified Fresh score of 77% or above. (It is the Ravenclaw of movie franchises.) Final film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 comes in at number one with a whopping 96%, with fan fave Prisoner of Azkaban close behind on 90%; in last place is Deathly Hallows – Part 1, which suffered – according to critics – from an inevitable feeling of being unfinished. In the latest episode of our new podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), we’re going big. Like, troll-rampaging-in-a-boarding-school-bathroom big…. Or giant-spider-getting-freaky-in-the-woods big.

The initial reactions to Avengers: Endgame following the first screenings were extremely positive. But now critics have had time to process what they saw, and well, they’re still mostly raving about the 22nd entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe it s currently Certified Fresh at 97%. Of course, there are some quibbles here and there, mainly about the length. Also, the long-form responses to the Avengers: Infinity War follow-up have some extra thoughts to share regarding Endgame’s best moments, as well as the movie’s MVP. Basically, just icing on the cake to get you even more hyped for this thing. Here’s what the critics are saying about Avengers: Endgame:How does it compare to Avengers: Infinity War?Endgame is a different type of film than Infinity War… there are actually moments of calm, where the audience can catch its breath. Charles Barfield, The PlaylistInfinity War floundered, it seems, so Endgame could soar. Angie Han, MashableWhere Infinity War had trouble finding time for characters, Endgame is about nothing but character work.  Susana Polo, PolygonThe Russo Brothers were able to best themselves yet again. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorThere’s something considerably less elegant to the storytelling this time around. Peter Debruge, VarietyIs it the best Marvel movie yet?Avengers: Endgame is everything you’ve ever dreamed a Marvel movie could be…You will not be let down.  Germain Lussier, io9One of the most ambitious, entertaining, emotional, and stunning blockbusters we’ve ever seen, and the best film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon thus far.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendAvengers: Endgame is not the best Marvel movie ever made…But it is the most Marvel movie ever made, and there s something incredible about that. Angie Han, MashableAvengers: Endgame is the most Marvel movie in Marvel Cinematic Universe history. Charles Barfield, The PlaylistAvengers: Endgame is, without a doubt, the most confusing and convoluted of any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, yet it’s also unbelievably satisfying. Mike Ryan, UproxxAvengers: Endgame is now my favorite MCU movie and is probably my favorite comic book movie to date. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorIt’s not the best of anything in terms of the Marvel franchise…Avengers: Endgame is a merely okay MCU movie. Scott Mendelson, Forbes(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)Should we be surprised at this?Whatever you think Endgame will be, it will still confound and amaze and thrill you in ways that is hard to imagine.  Mark Daniell, Toronto SunOne of the nicest surprises of Endgame is how fun it is… So much so that the three-hour run time seems to fly by. Angie Han, MashableThere are things in Endgame you never could have guessed would come back to light, but they do, and it’s glorious. Germain Lussier, io9Endgame is truly a masterful piece of storytelling, which both goes exactly where you expect it to, and not at all. Anne Cohen, Refinery29(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)How busy is the movie? The Russos juggle the tones with balletic finesse.  Eric Kohn, IndieWireThe film is sometimes juggling five or six stories simultaneously, but the Russos and their editors never let the audience get too far from one or the other. Germain Lussier, io9It’s strangely sentimental for a movie that features the biggest all-out superhero fight I can ever remember seeing.  Mike Ryan, UproxxHow is the action? The fight scenes that do take place are epic… seeing the epic battle in the third act makes the last decade worth it.  Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe action sequences were choreographed and shot so beautifully. Without spoiling anything, you will need to be prepared for the third act. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorAre we going to cry?As emotionally affecting as any Marvel movie has ever been… a genuinely moving drama.  Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesEndgame focuses on the original Avengers…it’s immensely gratifying and emotional to see them struggle on a plethora of levels. Germain Lussier, io9(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)How satisfying is it as a finale?Endgame does pull off the feat of feeling remarkably like a finale, and even the most casual fan may feel the emotional tug of those moments.  Don Kaye, Den of GeekAs a Part 2, Endgame is a hugely successful ending to a story that began a year ago but truly dates back a decade. Charles Barfield, The Playlist[It’s] a moment to stop and look back in amazement (or terror) at what the MCU has pulled off…Endgame is Marvel s crowning achievement. Angie Han, MashableHow lost will we be if we haven t seen all 21 previous movies? There’s no shaking the fact that Endgame is very much a Part 2 (or Part 22, honestly)… not for MCU newbies… casual fans need not apply  If you’re not someone that knows every character by name, you’re in for a confusing three-hour film. Charles Barfield, The PlaylistMy daughter hasn’t seen very many of these and only had a few in-movie questions… it works on its own terms and unquestionably sticks the landing. Scott Mendelson, ForbesThis is a film designed for fans… Newcomers will likely find themselves totally lost in this tangle of characters and relationships and mythologies. Angie Han, MashableIt does feel like a wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendRyan FujitaniCan you give me some comparative context?Newcomers to the series may as well be watching a Transformers movie. Eric Kohn, IndieWireWhile there is a big third-act action sequence, it’s (despite some grand fan service) closer in structure and visuals to Ready Player One than The Two Towers. Scott Mendelson, ForbesAvengers: Endgame feels like the last scene of Titanic with everyone back on the ship, applauding. And, you know what? I’m okay with that. Mike Ryan, UproxxWho is the movie s MVP?From a performance standpoint, Chris Hemsworth, for the second film in a row, delivers the best outing of the large ensemble. Clayton Davis, AwardsCircuit.comHemsworth especially has quickly become, due to Thor: Ragnarok and the last two of these Avengers flicks, a subtle MVP of the franchise. Scott Mendelson, ForbesHemsworth has inexplicably become the MVP of this franchise, able to balance big, broad comedy with soul-searching pathos. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmAre there any big criticisms? Its biggest fault, however nitpicky, is that it doesn’t really confront or advance any of the big philosophical questions that have been running through the saga from the beginning. Scott Mendelson, ForbesI feel that Marvel’s secret weapon [Captain Marvel] is underused. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesHas a sitcom episode like feel to it that is reminiscent of a ‘clip show’ – where the viewers get excerpts and highlights from previous episodes of the series. Clayton Davis, AwardsCircuit.comWill there ever be anything like this movie again? One can only hope that the next 10 years of Marvel storytelling — which will feature new heroes and villains — comes close to this. 新万博 Stranger Things returns July 4 to a warm reception from critics for its new season. The first reviews out propelled the season 3 to Certified Fresh status within the day on Sunday, in one of the fastest designations in Rotten Tomatoes history. The series sets its third season in the summer, starting out all warm breezes, sunny skies, baking skin, splashing pools, and young romance. But this is Hawkins, Indiana, and stranger things lurk beneath that veneer of 80s suburban normalcy.Cue the Netflix series Goonies-like crew: supernatural Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Schnapp), Max (Sadie Sink), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and Steve (Joe Keery).Parents and other siblings also return, including scene-stealing Priah Ferguson as Lucas sister Erica, Dacre Montgomery as Max s bully brother Billy, and, of course, Winona Ryder as Will and Jonathan s mom Joyce and David Harbour as police chief Jim Hopper, who last season adopted the role as Eleven s father in attachment if not legally. In season 3, their bond is stronger than ever.See what critics had to say about Stranger Things: Season 3 (2019) 89% below.Something Old(Photo by Netflix) Reliable, durable and comfortable, ST3 is what you d expect and certainly what you want, if what you want is seasons 1 and 2, with a few big twists along the way. — Verne Gay, NewsdaySomething New(Photo by Netflix) Our heroes are not the goofy young kids they used to be. The third series realigns and reconfigures them in new combinations and allegiances. — Suzi Feay, Financial TimesSomething Borrowed Though there are signs that Stranger Things is on the verge of slowing down (one-note villains, the missing feeling of an unearthed 80s treasure), that s not happening yet in Season 3. — Tim Surette, TV Guide Stranger Things finally becomes the sort of extravagant, exceedingly ambitious adventure spectacle that would have ruled the theaters during the 80s, instead of a TV series merely obsessed with films from that decade. — Kevin Yeoman, ScreenRantSomething True?(Photo by Netflix) On the evidence of this plodding and predictable third season, the Duffers can t skip town soon enough. — Ed Power, Daily Telegraph (UK) It harnesses a Big Summer Mood, a healthy heap of nostalgia and has plenty of fun references. But its story is also convoluted and far too scattered. — Allison Keene, Paste Magazine It s a thin imitation of what we used to have, who could blame anyone for clinging to it? — Judy Berman, TIME MagazineFinal Verdict? (Photo by Netflix) Season 3 balances good-natured laughs with charming nostalgia through likable characters doing battle against looming horrors. Yet it feels like it s propping up its past to justify its present. — Brandon Katz, Observer Despite its rocky start, the creators and performers find a way to pull off the impossible and deliver the best season yet, all while honoring their loyal fan base and challenging them to want more from a series known for playing it safe. — Patrick Cavanaugh, ComicBook.com By doubling down on relationship stories, Season 3 of Stranger Things delivers an oft-charming, deeper-than-expected, and ultimately enjoyable new chapter. — Ben Travers, indieWireLike this?
