九游会网页版登录入口采用百度引擎1（Baidu 4）Everyone is about to find out the answer to the question: Who would win out of Godzilla and King Kong if they were to go toe-to-toe in a rock-em-sock-em city-destroying brawl (or several brawls)? That’s kinda the entire premise of the MonsterVerse’s latest movie, Godzilla Vs. Kong. But which of these two icons of cinema would come out on top if the playing field were…. Dancing with the Stars? Or, say, The Great British Bake Off? Ahead of the new movie’s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak sat down with the huge cast – which includes Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgård, Demián Bichir, Rebecca Hall, and more – to see which monster they think would dominate on various reality TV shows. It wasn’t all fun and games, though: Novak also went deep on the long-coming clash of the titans, asking Brown, Skarsgård, Bichir, Hall, and fellow co-stars Julian Dennison, Eiza González, and Kaylee Hottle, what it was like to share the big screen with the big guys and how they worked to bring a bit of heart and soul to all the mayhem. Plus, director Adam Wingard reveals that he wanted the movie to be even bigger (!) and why audiences should keep their eyes peeled for action movie easter eggs.Check out our podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Godzilla: King of the MonstersGodzilla Vs. This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Buck Rogers, Cleopatra, Furiosa, The Others, and Tut.This WEEK S TOP STORYMAD MAX: FURY ROAD PREQUEL LANDS THREE SUPERHERO STARS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Director George Miller is getting closer to a filming start date for Furiosa, his prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%), about the life of Charlize Theron s character before she became well, the person she was in Mad Max: Fury Road. Back in March, we first heard that Miller was considering casting Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Emma.) as the younger Furiosa, and this week, that casting was confirmed. In addition to Taylor-Joy (who played Magik in The New Mutants), however, Miller has also cast Australian star Chris Hemsworth (Marvel s Thor, obviously) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played both Black Manta in Aquaman and Doctor Manhattan in HBO s Watchmen (our apologies if that s a spoiler for a show that aired a year ago). Hemsworth will reportedly play a character called Dementus who has a huge silver scar on his face, and Abdul-Mateen will play a character called Pretorian. Those names seem to confirm that the film will indeed be set in post-apocalyptic times, and not, as some might have guessed, before the end of the world. Tom Hardy is not expected to reprise his role as Mad Max, as his character would be much younger, and also because Max and Furiosa did not seem to know each other before they met in Fury Road. There is no release date yet for Furiosa, but George Miller plans to start filming in 2021, which suggests a date in 2022 or 2023. You can read here what Anya Taylor-Joy is already saying about being cast as Furiosa, and read here to find out what Miller might have planned for the prequel.Other Top Headlines1. GAL GADOT TO REUNITE WITH PATTY JENKINS FOR CLEOPATRA (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world still hasn t seen Wonder Woman 1984, the second collaboration between star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins following their work together on the first Wonder Woman (Certified Fresh at 93%). We ve known for a while that Gadot and Jenkins have plans to eventually make a third Wonder Woman movie together, but what we didn t know until this week is that, in the meantime, they will be reuniting for another movie about a heroine with ancient mythologial roots. Gadot is now attached to star in and Patty Jenkins will direct Paramount Pictures Cleopatra biopic, based on the life of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Cleopatra has been a favorite epic subject for Hollywood since its earliest days, including Cecil B. DeMille s 1934 film starring Claudette Colbert and the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor. There have been many attempts at Cleopatra biopics over the last several years, including one at Sony Pictures that in the past had both Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga possibly in talks to star. That Sony project has been in development for over 10 years, and it s not known at this point whether Sony will push forward to compete with the Gal Gadot version, or whether Sony has given up on Cleopatra completely.2. OSCAR-WINNING DIRECTOR OF HAIR LOVE TO ANIMATE LIFE OF KING TUT(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)Marvel Studios Black Panther was an milestone for many reasons, but one of them was that it achieved a level of live-action production design and world building that one more usually associates with animation. That style is called afrofuturism, and we re soon going to get a Sony Pictures Animation feature film called Tut, which will interpret the life of young Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankamun through an afrofutristic vision. Tut will be the animated feature film debut of director Matthew A. Cherry, who won the Academy Award this year for Best Animated Short for Hair Love (which you can watch on Facebook right here). Cherry s vision for Tut will take audiences on a journey through ancient Egypt and celebrate a culture that introduced the world to countless modern conventions and technologies. There is no voice casting news for Tut yet, and given the production time for major animated films, we probably can t expect to see it released until 2023 or later. Matthew A. Cherry will also be producing a 12 episode Hair Love spin-off series for HBO Max called Young Love.3. JOAQUIN PHOENIX GETS GOOD PART AS BONAPARTE IN KITBAG (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just last week, we learned that 90 year old Clint Eastwood is preparing to direct and star in his next movie Cry Macho, and this week, another director who s nearly as old also announced a major new project. 82-year-old Ridley Scott wrapped filming this week on The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, and then in March, he will start filming Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. And then, after that (at which point he will be 83), Scott will direct Joaquin Phoenix in the epic Napoleon Bonaparte biopic Kitbag. The title reportedly refers to the kitbags carried by soldiers during war, and the expression that there is a general s staff hidden in every soldier s kitbag. The ambitious biopic will reportedly cover Napoleon s, swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. Although Napoleon was a popular subject in Hollywood s earliest years, there hasn t been a major such movie since 1970 s Waterloo (Rotten at 27%), the box office failure of which is often cited as the reason why Stanley Kubrick gave up on his own Napoleon biopic in which Jack Nicholson would have starred.4. SELENA GOMEZ TO STAR IN BLACK SWAN-STYLE THRILLER SET IN FASHION WORLD(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although Selena Gomez has stayed busy with her music (and the videos that go with it), supporting roles in movies like The Dead Don t Die (Rotten at 54%), and a Woody Allen movie few people have seen, you actually have to go back four years to 2016 and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (Fresh at 64%) to find a movie in which Gomez had a prominent role (and even that was as part of an ensemble). Gomez appears intent on fixing that soon, with this week s new project, and also the recent news that Gomez s voice role in Hotel Transylvania 4 may be larger than we originally thought. Gomez will produce ( and will likely also star) in a psychological horror film for STXfilms called Dollhouse, which is being compared to Black Swan, but set in the fashion world of New York City. Gomez s producing partners on Dollhouse will include Shaun Levy s 21 Laps Entertainment, whose filmography includes Arrival, Fist Fight, Kin, and Ryan Reynolds upcoming action movie Free Guy. (This probably goes without saying, but just to be clear, Selena Gomez s Dollhouse also has nothing to do with the FOX TV series starring Eliza Dushku.)5. SAMMY DAVIS JR. MAY BE FIRST RAT PACK MEMBER TO GET HIS OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)Over the last 20 years or so, there have been a few different attempts to adapt the lives of famous 1950s/1960s Rat Pack members like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as biopics, but neither ever came to be (though HBO did portray them collectively in 1998 s The Rat Pack, Rotten at 57%). With no active development for biopics about either of those crooners, it s now looking more likely that the first major feature film about the life of a Rat Pack member will instead be about the life of Sammy Davis, Jr. Lena Waithe (Master of None, Ready Player One) is producing the Sammy Davis, Jr. biopic with MGM, and the screenplay will be adapted from the memoir Sammy Davis Jr: My Father by his daughter Tracey Davis. Sammy Davis Jr. had many personal distinctions, including both African American and Jewish heritage, multiple starring film roles, and several songs that made it to the Top 20 pop charts, including Something s Gotta Give, Love Me or Leave Me, and I ve Got to Be Me (possibly a great title for his biopic?).6. GODZILLA PRODUCERS REBOOTING CLASSIC SCI-FI HERO BUCK ROGERS (Photo by ©NBC courtesy Everett Collection)We re all so used to science fiction and superheroes that we can easily take it for granted that they ve always been around, but the origins for many genre concepts are relatively new. For example, it was only 92 years ago in 1928 that the sci-fi adventurer Buck Rogers was first introduced (predating Flash Gordon, John Carter of Mars, and thousands of superheroes, including Superman). Although Buck Rogers went on to become a popular 1930s and 1940s comic strip and serial star, the character has been relatively underused ever since, except for the 1979-1981 TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray), which may be well-remembered by Generation X, but probably not by many under 40. After several months of negotiations, Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent reboots like Godzilla and Dune, is now in development on a new feature film that would reboot Buck Rogers, focusing on a man who wakes up from centuries of suspended animation 500 years in the future. It s not yet known which version of Buck Rogers will be adapted, including for example, whether the reboot might include characters from the TV show like Twiki the robot and Erin Gray s Wilma Deering. In tangentially related news, Walt Disney Pictures is also now developing a feature film based on the popular theme park attraction Space Mountain.7. SANDRA BULLOCK S ADVENTURE TO THE LOST CITY OF D (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)It might feel a lot longer ago than 2009, but that was indeed the year that the romantic comedy The Proposal (Rotten at 45%), which as it turned out, was sort of one of the last hurrahs for the romantic comedy genre as a major Hollywood release (they re more common these days on streamers than in major theatrical releases). But when people do eventually go back to movie theaters post-COVID-19, they are still going to want date movies, so it s not at all surprising that some rom-coms are still in development, especially when they re hybrids with other genres. Sandra Bullock will produce and is attached to star in a Paramount Pictures romantic adventure called The Lost City of D, which is being compared to the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone. Although he s not signed, the producers reportedly also hope to recruit Bullock s Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds to join her in their first movie together since. Sandra Bullock will star as an author who discovers that the fictional city she s written about is actually real, leading her to try to discover its location. The most recent screenplay draft was written by Dana Fox (Isn t It Romantic, Couples Retreat).8. ANIMATED WIZARD OF OZ SPINOFF MOVIE IN THE WORKS FOR DOROTHY S LITTLE DOG TOTO TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Children s author L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books, but the argument could be made that the amazing success of The Wizard of Oz has left such an overwhelming legacy that the other books were not adapted as frequently (or at all) as they would have been if the 1939 The Wizard of Oz had never existed. (Of course, the Oz would has indeed been revisited, usually as reimaginings like the Broadway musical Wicked, or the R B musical The Wiz.) Warner Animation Group is now developing another film in that vein, as the studio has made a deal with two-time Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) to direct their musical adaptation of the book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of The Wizard of Oz, which, as the title suggests, is basically the same story but from the perspective of Dorothy s dog. The most recent movie from Warner Animation Group was the prequel Scoob!, which ended up going to VOD because of the pandemic, but the Toto movie is reportedly still fully intended for a theatrical release (given how long animation takes, Toto is still a few years away anyway).9. THE OTHERS IS GETTING A REMAKE(Photo by (c)Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)It seems like most movie remakes come from about 20-30 years earlier for example, the 1980s had lots of 1950s remakes, and the 2000s and 2010s had a lot of remakes from the 1980s. So, as we re now 20 years from the year 2000, we can expect to see remakes of movies from the aughts start to appear, and one such project made the news this week. Universal Pictures is partnering with Sentient Entertainment (TV s Feud: Bette and Joan) to develop a remake of the 2001 supernatural thriller The Others ( Certified Fresh at 83% ), starring Nicole Kidman as a mother struggling to protect her children from a supernatural menace in their home. The original movie was set in England in 1945, but it s possible the remake may have a different setting (possibly modern times, or any other decade). It s also not yet known who will be adapting the screenplay, or who will be directing the film.On an Apple device? (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)On Monday morning, NBC announced that it would not broadcast the 2022 Golden Globe Awards in what was seen as a crippling blow to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that hands out the annual prizes and which has been mired in bad headlines over the past several months. The statement from NBC, which is a part of Rotten Tomatoes parent company NBCUniversal, read: We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023. Though many entertainment insiders have long derided the HFPA for its lack of diversity, unprofessional actions by its members, and the extravagant gifts those members receive, most believed the group was immune to any real reform. However, today’s announcement from NBC, which comes on the heels of fallout from a bombshell LA Times report back in February that detailed decades of self-dealing, unethical actions, homophobia, sexism, and racism by several members, may prove to be the end of the organization as we know it.But why exactly is NBC – along with entertainment powerhouses like Netflix, Amazon, Warner Bros., and Tom Cruise(!) – cutting ties with the once-coveted awards show? Here’s a breakdown (Photo by Valerie Macon/Getty Images)First, let’s talk about the organization itself. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a small group of around 90 journalists who cover entertainment for international audiences while based in Southern California. The group, which has been around since 1944, has been the subject of several controversies, criticized for everything from a poor selection of nominated films to blatant bribery. Some say that some of the HFPA’s members have tenuous ties to Hollywood and/or lack journalistic bona fides, and in the Times report, it was confirmed that the group had not had a Black member in over 20 years. The report also noted that several seemingly qualified journalists have been rejected for membership, with one applicant suing the organization just last year, dubbing them an entertainment “cartel.”Five-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais himself once compared the Globes unfavorably to the Oscars in 2012, saying the former was a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought – allegedly. His comments drew big laughs and big applause on the night because many in the room judged the quip to be all too true.(Photo by NBC/Getty Images)The questionable nominations had also been the talk of the industry since well before the Times report. This year, pop star Sia s controversial film Music earned two nominations despite being blasted by critics to the point that its Tomatometer score stands at just 8%. (Its Audience Score is a similarly paltry 13%.) The assumed justification for this is that, because Sia is very camera shy, the nomination would compel the musician to make herself available for interviews and selfies something the HFPA has become notorious for asking of every celebrity. In 2017 after Tom Ford, the fashion-designer-turned-director of Nocturnal Animals, gifted HFPA members a swag bag of his own branded fragrances, his star Aaron Taylor Johnson was chosen as Best Supporting Actor over eventual Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), a decision that left many scratching their heads and some crying foul. The backlash was so loud the group was told to return the gifts by the HFPA board. In any given year, pundits point to a handful of confounding nominations that are attributable less to the quality of performances and more to the HFPA’s desire to have certain famous faces show up for their red carpets.Still, despite the constant controversy and silly choices, the show was considered a fun watch by most; organizers choices of tables instead of theater seats allowed A-listers to mingle together and perhaps tip a glass with Oprah, Beyoncé, Tom Hanks, or Lady Gaga all while we watched, looking for fun, meme-able moments. It’s worth noting too, that the Globes have also managed a relatively consistent viewership, save its Zoom-filled event this year, which came just weeks after the LA Times piece but was still on par with an Oscars ceremony that boasted full attendance and a red carpet. (Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, as well as HFPA members, had to address the controversy during the show.) All the glitz of the event, plus those ratings, are largely why many Hollywood players have begrudgingly played along, hoping to help their Oscar chances with a win or good moment and boost awards-season ticket sales and ratings for the nominated films and TV shows.(Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images)Studios have been all too happy to participate in pricey private HFPA press conferences, send members glitzy swag (sometimes), host dinners for them, and even fly them out to set visits at luxury locales. Last year, for example, the entire HFPA was flown to Paris to visit the set of Emily in Paris and treated to a stay at a 5-star hotel, which was brought up quickly after the group gave the widely panned Netflix series two nominations. Netflix, however, was not the only or the most egregious offender; in fact, that was how most of the town operated – because the incentives outweighed the downside. That was until now. After the LA Times story broke, the HFPA was quick to say a change was coming. The membership, which had long bristled at adding new members and diversifying its ranks – in order to guarantee predictable results, according to the LA Times – was now under immense pressure to do just that or risk losing its lucrative television contract, the group s primary source of revenue. The HFPA quickly hired a diversity consultant and crisis PR management team to help facilitate the change they announced was coming, first via a statement and again during the live awards show broadcast.(Photo by Carole Bethuel/©Netflix)As the talks happened behind the scenes, the industry s most powerful PR agencies banded together on March 15th with a pointed warning that they would no longer engage with the group unless the changes were substantial, quick, and long-lasting. This was significant, as PR firms typically try to avoid weighing in on such controversies, but as the gatekeepers to the top talent in Hollywood, they hold immeasurable power over whether the HFPA can have those desirable A-listers attend their show. Moreover, the idea of high-powered competitors banding together on anything like this is a clear illustration of how frustrated they are with the situation and how committed they are to fixing the underlying issues. The HFPA replied that they were taking time to consult various stakeholders, including NBC, the awards show s producers, Dick Clark Productions, and industry leaders, and their plans would be announced on May 5.The proposed reforms and the new timeline they released after NBC pulled the TV Contract are as follows:Week of May 3Members meet, consider, and overwhelmingly vote to approve and implement the Board’s plan for transformational changeBoard continues to meet with advocacy groups to develop initiatives to fulfill the HFPA’s commitment to add at least 20 new members by August 2021 and increase membership by 50% in 18 monthsEradicating the new member one-year moratorium on voting; all new members will have all voting rights on day oneBoard and members approve the hiring of Ropes Gray to amend and restate bylaws and other governing documents to implement a member-approved plan for transformational changeWeeks of May 10 and 17Revise and approve new Code of Conduct in consultation with publicists and studiosContinue outreach to potential new member candidatesPublish Code of Conduct and establish hotline for reporting of violationsEngage independent third-party investigator to review and respond promptly to all hotline claimsInterview candidates and engage new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (“DEI”) consultantIdentify and recruit independent, outside professionals and non-board members and form Accountability/Oversight Board (“Advisory Board”) to oversee HFPA Board in implementing a plan for transformational changeInterview executive search firms to commence search for Chief DEI/HR Officer and identification of potential CEO/CFO and other executives to lead HFPAHFPA website to be continuously updated to show progress against plan and to list promised member information (biographies, publications, affiliations, etc.)Weeks of May 24 and 31New DEI Consultant and other outside experts conduct mandatory member training for DEI and sexual harassmentBoard and Advisory Board continue work on the identification of applicants to fulfill commitment to add at least 20 new members by August 2021Grants Officer and subcommittee of members continue work to increase support of internship, mentorship, and scholarship programs for students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in international journalismIdentify and recruit independent, outside professionals for new Credentials Committee, which will oversee new membership application process and reaccreditation of current members based on same criteria as new membersContinue review of committee structure/compensationFirst reading of Bylaw Amendments at General Membership Meeting (“GMM”)Weeks of June 7, 14, and 21Focus groups with members, Advisory Board, and Ropes Gray to review amendments to Bylaws and other governing documentsBoard assesses and evaluates recommendations of Executive Search Firm for new Executive Officer teamForm new Credentials CommitteeAll above workstreams on training, mentorship, and recruitment continueWeek of June 28Second reading of Bylaw Amendments at GMMBallots for voting on Bylaw Amendments mailed to membersImplement new policies on Gifts, Travel, Conflicts of Interest, and Press ConferencesWeek of July 5Members vote on Bylaw Amendments by ballotWeeks of 12 and 19Approved Bylaw Amendments become effectiveNew Officer and Board elections under amended and restated BylawsNew membership process opens per new criteria enacted in amended and restated BylawsAll existing members required to meet same standards as new members for re-accreditation of their membershipWeek of July 26New member process continuesReaccreditation continuesWeek of August 2New members admitted to HFPANew Board elected, including independent members, in accordance with amended and restated BylawsNew CEO/CFO and other Executive Team approved and engaged to manage HFPAExisting Board and Officers resign upon election of New Board and hiring of Executive TeamThe initial proposals were leaked before the deadline without a clear timeline, and the reaction throughout Hollywood was a swift and immediate chorus of “do better.” No word yet on how the new timeline will be received, but the HFPA was clear these measures would be enacted regardless of the 2022 television broadcast. Stories from Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, and Brendan Fraser have detailed abuses that many viewed can t be fixed by the initial proposals, which were also considered too slow-moving to address the membership issues.(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/NBC/Getty Images)Inclusivity activist organization Time s Up released a statement that decried the proposed changes as window dressing, while the PR firms

Toy Story 4 is nothing if not sincere. During a one-and-a-half-day visit to the Pixar campus in Emeryville – part of the California East Bay golden triangle of art-driven cities including Oakland and Berkeley – over a dozen supervisors, writers, and digital artisans hosted workshops and seminars about their upcoming June movie to answer the question that s on all our minds: Why? Why make another Toy Story? Especially when Toy Story 3 felt like the end; Andy passing his toys on to the next generation as he moves to college, the camera panning up to the sky, a bookend with the same clouds that opened the Toy Story back in 1995. Toy Story 3 delivered a mint-in-box rarity in today s world of tempting serialized storytelling and cinematic universes: A sense of finality, and closure. Why mess with that?Minor spoiler warning: This article describes the opening scene of Toy Story 4!It started in 2014.We re sitting in a board room with Pixar character modelers, directing animators, and story supervisors and artists. Like the rest of the world, they tell us, Pixar had moved on from Toy Story, not expecting to see the franchise s characters on the screen again, outside of shorts and television specials. Monsters University had just released. They were gearing up for the one-two punch of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Amidst the streamlined chaos, an impossible idea persisted: That there was still more Toy Story to tell, and it deserved to be on the biggest screens possible across the world. The idea turned to talk, turned to pencil against paper, turned to cursors across monitors, turned into crews and planning and development, until Toy Story 4 moved into The Steve Jobs Building, the campus section where movies are officially in production.BO PEEP FINALLY GETS HER DUEPixar story supervisor Valerie LaPointe tells the room that there are people at Pixar who, as children, had their world expanded watching Toy Story in theaters in 1995, who now get to work on the fourth, and understand the legacy they re molding on their computers every day. To LaPointe s left are five women, who minutes before had each spoken about their role on TS4, nodding in agreement. They are a crucial creative force at Pixar, and instrumental in forging the emotional ace of the new movie: Bo Peep. The porcelain lamp with her flock of sheep (voiced, as always, by Annie Potts) had a minor but memorable role in the original Toy Story as Woody s flame, with less to do in Toy Story 2. And while the main characters got their glorious (seeming) sendoff in Toy Story 3, Bo wasn t there at all, having been reduced to a sacrificial plot point to motivate and illuminate her boyfriend s emotional pain. Clearly, there was more story to tell, because her story hadn t been told at all.Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback. It s nighttime at Andy s house, in the middle of a downpour, set a bit before Toy Story 3. R/C is outside caught in a gutter torrent, spinning his wheels to keep from getting sucked into a sewer drain. Bo and Woody, always the contingency planners, execute a rescue mission that saves R/C and leaves Woody momentarily underneath a car in the driveway. Everything looks photo-decadent: the rain, the lighting, the subtle scuff on Buzz s plastic armor plating. Pixar has found new vistas to paint once again. Then, the bombshell: Molly, Andy s sister, is growing up and Bo s watch has ended – she s being carried in a box to the car, and soon to be off into the great donated unknown. Bo has accepted her fate, having long since known a porcelain lamp doesn t have quite the shelf life of a talking cowboy or space commando. Woody is frantic, and he attempts to get her out of the box. Bo does the opposite, offering a place beside her. Just as Bo knows her destination, Woody knows his is entwined with Andy, and as the car peels off, he s left in the driveway splintered by the rain. It s not quite Up territory in terms of Pixar opening-scene tearjerkers, but considering we ve known these characters for nearly 25 years, it s damn close.EYES PEELED FOR PLENTY OF PIXAR EASTER EGGSFor eagle-eyed viewers, something may catch your attention: The car s license plate – always cinematic fertile ground for easter eggs, especially in Pixar films. RMR F97, the plates read. But what does it mean? It is an easter egg! director Josh Cooley laughed during our press conference. On Toy Story 2, there was someone who worked on the show that accidentally deleted the movie from the render farm, producer Mark Nielsen said, who worked modeling and shading on Toy Story 2. That was the command on the computer that deleted the film. Galyn Susman, who was an early producer on this film, was on maternity leave and had a backup of the movie at her house, and brought it back to Pixar and restored it, added producer Jonas Rivera. It felt appropriate that the license plate on the car that takes Bo away would be the same that killed Toy Story 2. From the filmmakers words and the footage and material shown, it becomes apparent Toy Story 4 will probably become the most easter egg-laden movie the studio has ever produced. At one point, Woody and Forky – a spork with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner arms come to life, who exists as his own existential quandary – end up in an antique store. Full of neat knick-knacks and weathered baubles, it s a set piece that puts Pixar s detailed creativity on full display, not to mention plenty of references to their past.Look for a sign that says Papa Rivera s, a reference to the aforementioned producer. The Eggman Movers truck, around since the first Toy Story, makes a comeback, long known to be tied to art director Ralph Eggleston. From Finding Nemo, you can see the tiki heads from the fish tank on some shelves. There s steel decoration for Catmull s Brews, named after Ed Catmull, who s been with the company since the beginning and is retiring the month after Toy Story 4 is released. The Catmull sign hangs over a pinball machine whose interior has been turned into a miniature nightclub; Tinny, from the 1988 short Tin Toy, is the bouncer. (And for you pinheads out there, the machine was modeled after Bally s 1977 Black Jack – and we saw that tucked away in a room at Pixar HQ when we were doing a workshop making our own Forkys.)A FEMALE VILLAIN, FULL-ON BODY HORROR, AND BOO?Elsewhere in the antique store, Woody and Forky meet Gabby-Gabby, an angelic 50s doll and the first female antagonist of the series. Gabby Gabby commands a league of dapper and wholly unsettling ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding, like trying to rip out Woody s voice box to replace her own broken one. To set the body horror mood, Gabby Gabby puts on a record playing music from Coco, the vinyl pressed on the prestigious Chalupa Records. And that s not the only Coco reference. Part of the road trip includes visiting a carnival fair across the street from the antique store, which is where Woody reunites with Bo, who has been leading a joyous, independent, if not occasionally challenging life as a lost toy. One of the carnival game prizes is the guitar from Coco. And who s joined in among the festivities? A teenage Boo from Monsters, Inc, who appears to have not changed her style since 2001. Hey, purple shirts and scrunchies are eternal! And all those easter eggs were from less than 30 minutes of footage. As Toy Story 4 has been in the works for the last five years, the studio has seen some major changes. Ed Catmull is retiring. Beloved animator Bud Luckey passed away (he was all over the classic Boundin short). And founder John Lasseter left in scandal. It’s been a different time from their heyday, when Pixar racked up 11 Certified Fresh movies between Toy Story and 3; then a record, now overtaken by Marvel Studios current 14. During the visit, it s clear here was a movie being made by people both filmmaker and fan, who see this as a continuation of the golden age. Maybe they re always like this with their movies. For anyone born after 2010, this is the first chance to watch a new Toy Story on the big screen. It could even be their first movie theater experience ever. That s quite the gift. It s the same one Pixar offered in 1995, and many people who took it back then, grew up, got a job there, made Toy Story 4, talked to a bunch of press, and now get to offer it up to a new generation. Returning to the toy cowboy who s devoted to the joy of others, Pixar has become the studio it always was: A house of toil and dream, where old things find new life.Like this? This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Deadpool 3, The Suicide Squad, a Spike Lee Viagra musical (yes, really), and a pair of ensemble thrillers. This WEEK S TOP STORYDEADPOOL 3 MOVES FORWARD AT MARVEL STUDIOSRyan FujitaniIt s now been over a year and a half since Disney officially acquired the film and TV properties of the former 20th Century Fox, which included the various Marvel titles that had previously been at Fox, like Fantastic Four and everything-X-Men-related. Although there have been the expected rumors and mentions at San Diego Comic-Con, we hadn t officially heard of any of the Fox/Marvel titles moving forward through the usual development process at Marvel Studios, but we now know which movie has that distinction first. Marvel Studios has officially hired the screenwriting sisters team of Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin (Bob s Burgers, The Great North) to start work on the Deadpool 3 screenplay, with Ryan Reynolds attached to reprise his role as the merc with a mouth. Reportedly, Marvel has been meeting with writers pitching their Deadpool 3 ideas for about a month, with the Molyneux sisters eventually pitching the perfect fit [Marvel] wanted. Although no premise has been announced yet, the character might be the best choice of all the Fox titles to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe first because of his frequent ability to break the fourth wall, both in the comics and in the movies (as in, he might be the character most aware of possible alternate realities, a la Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). It s not yet known if other Deadpool 2 co-stars like Zazie Beetz as Domino or Josh Brolin as Cable might also appear in Deadpool 3, or whether, for example, anyone in the MCU might notice how much Cable looks like Thanos. There is no release date for Deadpool 3, but given the various COVID-19-related delays, it probably won t be until sometime in 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.Other Top Headlines1. LADY GAGA WILL BOOK A SEAT ON BRAD PITT S BULLET TRAIN(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty Images)Brad Pitt has been attached for a while now to star in the action thriller Bullet Train (based on the 2010 Japanese novel Maria Beetle) for Sony Pictures, but this week, the film s cast expanded quite a bit, revealing it might be similar in style to 1970s ensemble disaster movies like Airport and The Towering Inferno. The latest addition to Bullet Train is singer-turned-actress Lady Gaga, who is probably the biggest star of the group added this week, but she s expected to have a smaller supporting role. Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz also joined the cast, but likewise, her role isn t known. Another superhero movie co-star, Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), also joined Bullet Train this week. Finally, there s also TV s Masi Oka (Heroes, Hawaii-Five-0), likewise in an unknown role. Other members of the Bullet Train ensemble will include Logan Lerman, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Marvel s Quicksilver), Brian Tyree Henry (from Atlanta, as is Zazie Beetz), and Andrew Koji (Storm Shadow in the upcoming Snake Eyes movie). Bullet Train will be directed by David Leitch, who s coming off a hot streak that includes Atomic Blonde (Certified Fresh at 78%), Deadpool 2 (Certified Fresh at 84%), and Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%).2. HE GOT GAME: SPIKE LEE TO DIRECT VIAGRA MUSICAL(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)First discovered in 1989 as a possible treatment for chest pain, Pfizer introduced the prescription drug sildenafil under the brand name Viagra in 1998 as a medication to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It may have been inevitable that we would eventually get a movie about the invention of Viagra, but few could have guessed that when we did, it would be a musical co-written and directed by Spike Lee. Lee will adapt the screenplay with screenwriter Kwame Kwei-Armah (TV s Walter s War, Elmina s Kitchen) from the 2018 Esquire article All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra (which you can read right here). (One reason the musical might currently be untitled is that the title All Rise was recently taken by a CBS courtroom drama.) The original songs and music will be written by the team of Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, the creators of the rock musical Passing Strange. In a statement too long to fully quote here, Lee addressed his excitement about this project by frequently using his Shift key: So Finally Going Into My 4th Decade As A Filmmaker I Will Be Directing A DANCIN’,ALL SINGIN’ MUSICAL Spike Lee Joint And I Can’t Wait. My Moms Has Been Waiting TOO!!! And Dats Da Rodgers And Hammerstein Truth, Ruth. 3. THE MYSTERY GENRE REVIVAL CONTINUES WITH NEW SAOIRSE RONAN MOVIE (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)Two of 2017 s Best Picture nominees (amid other nominations) at the 90th Annual Academy Awards were Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and this week, two of the stars of those films were announced to star in a new film together. Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, and David Oyelowo (Selma) have all signed on to star in an untitled murder mystery thriller from Searchlight Pictures to be directed by British TV director Tom George. The movie will be set in 1950s London, where a Hollywood film producer is trying to adapt a popular play until members of the crew start getting murdered, with Rockwell and Ronan playing the cops investigating the crimes. Whatever this movie ends up being titled, it seems easily grouped together with other recent movies like Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express as part of a whodunit revival, to which we will soon be able to add the Death on the Nile remake, starring Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, and Letitia Wright (Black Panther).4. SYLVESTER STALLONE CONFIRMED FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although they were only shown together briefly in the film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 featured Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Yeoh, Ving Rhames, and the voice of Miley Cyrus as a team representative of the original 1970s Guardians of the Galaxy team.(It s a long story, but the team we know from the movies with Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, et al. wasn t introduced in the comics until 2008.) At the time, it was teased that director James Gunn hoped that Stallone and crew would appear again in a future Marvel Studios movie, but as it turns out, we won t have to wait for that movie to see Stallone in a James Gunn movie. Gunn confirmed on Instagram over the weekend that Sylvester Stallone has joined the cast of the DC Comics soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), although the nature of his role, which might be fairly minor, wasn t revealed. Stallone is joining a massive ensemble cast that includes John Cena, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and of course, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. It s not yet known when James Gunn will be able to start filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 for Marvel, but with the COVID-19 pandemic delays, it s unlikely the film could be released before 2023.On an Apple device?
