It also hinted at the character s sarcastic streak with a few choice bits of dialogue. And, finally, the trailer offered a few sneak peeks into the story with Carol s apparent return to Earth in pursuit of some wayward Skrulls inspiring a search for her real identity.Of course, the trailer still favored its need to tease over explicitly telling us much, but we gleaned some great info from the 2 minute and 18 second preview. Here are five things it made clear.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Lady On The Train Is A SkrullIn the wake of the first trailer, many were concerned by the shot of Carol punching an older woman on the train – which we established last time is the Los Angeles Blue Line – but others surmised the woman would in fact turn out to be a Skrull. And those who were correct did not have to wait until March to have their suspicions confirmed. In the new trailer, we see the moment after Carol makes contact in the train car. The Skrull, while remaining in the form of an older woman, fights back in what we hope will be a slightly longer fight scene in the finished film. The Skrulls themselves date back to 1962 s Fantastic Four #2. The race of alien shape-shifters saw Earth as a key strategic vantage point in their war against the Kree. Unfortunately for both sides, the arrival of superheroes on Earth tipped the balance and eventually led to the Avengers becoming involved in the conflict. After thousands of years, the Kree-Skrull War ended thanks to Earth s heroes, but the hostility of both races never abated. In the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems the Skrulls are nowhere to be seen in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, suggesting the Kree-Skrull War ended sometime before the first Iron Man. Of course, their ability to mimic other shapes and powers may mean they are still around today, lurking in secret and waiting for the moment to advance their agenda. That was the plot of the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover event Secret Invasion, in which heroes like Carol s good friend Spider-Woman turned out to be Skrull agents embedded sometime before the full Skrull plan was set into motion. The story was controversial, but the premise could form a solid overarching plot going into the MCU s fourth phase. It remains to be seen if this is the direction the Avengers films will take after the fourth film, but if we had to bet on someone being a secret Skrull, we’re saying its Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). He’s too well adjusted to be a real Marvel hero.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has AmnesiaWhile the previous trailer strongly hinted at the loss of Carol’s memories, this trailer makes it text. From what we can glean, her life on Earth was likely her true history with a second life superimposed on her memory when she made it to Kree space. The previous trailer left people wondering if she was completely an invention of the Kree who merely dreamed she was human. But learning the truth will still have wide-reaching implications as her loyalty will come into question by the likes of Jude Law’s still unnamed character. Skrull commander Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) may be the primary target, but the Kree Empire may not like the Carol Danvers who comes back from Earth after completing the mission.Maybe that’s why she’s been missing in the years between the film and the modern MCU. Returning to Earth could put the planet in jeopardy as the Kree are not exactly the friendliest humanoid species in the cosmos. Consider Ronan’s (Lee Pace) refusal to honor the treaty signed between the Kree Empire and the Nova Empire in Guardians of the Galaxy. The Kree like making war and, perhaps, Carol led them on a 25-year wild goose chase to keep them away from the planet she suddenly discovered was her real home.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“Longer, Stronger, Superior”The line, uttered by Annette Benning in the trailer, is a direct callback to the 2014 Captain Marvel story by Kellysue DeConnick and artist David Lopez known as Higher, Further, Faster, More. The story saw Carol move back into space, form a team of her own, and face the precarious state of interstellar politics. That may turn out to be the rough arc of the film as well. Carol s attempt to recover her memories as an Air Force pilot may uncover a secret both the Skrulls and the Kree want to remain hidden, even if Talos appears to offer it to her during one moment in the trailer. But should she learn the truth, it may lead her back into space for a long time to deal with the fallout.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Mohawks In SpaceThis one may have been a given, but the new trailer finally revealed that Carol’s space Mohawk will be featured in Captain Marvel. The notion that Carol’s space helmet would allow for a Mohawk-shaped slice of her hair to peer through was part of artist Jamie McKelvie’s 2012 redesign for Captain Marvel’s costume – though he admitted early on that Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada suggested the idea. The Marvel executive thought it would be Carol s take on the traditional fin atop a Kree helmet. On the page, it reflects her rebellious streak while the rest of the costume indicates her dedication. Also, as McKelvie saw it, the helmet tells you things are about to get serious when she makes it appear. On screen it looks … well, it looks a little big hokey, but it certainly feels right in the trailer’s later moments when Carol takes the fight back into space.Come to think of it, the entire red-blue-gold color scheme of her costume in those scenes looks great, even if they’re less saturated than the colors of her comic book counterpart. It also appears to serve as a visual divide between the Kree, the Skrulls, and whatever Carol turns out to be after he trip to Earth.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has Her CatAt the end of the trailer, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) kneels down to pet a cat named Goose. While the S.H.I.E.L.D. records facility appears to be its home, the feline is an obvious reference to the comics, in which Carol owns a small cat named Chewie – itself a reference to Carol’s love of Star Wars. Of course, once she heads back out into space in Higher, Further, Faster, More, Carol discovers Chewie is also an alien. According to Rocket Raccoon, who ends up on Carol s ship, the cat is a really a Flerken. The species takes the form of Earth cats, but can also sprout tentacles and even generate pocket universes. He’s none-too-pleased to see a Flerken on board, but the two eventually come to an accord. It remains to be seen if Goose is also an alien, but it represents a fidelity to the source, even if the production still had to change the name. And by featuring it in the second trailer, one can expect the cat will be more than a throwaway gag.Unless, of course, the cat’s true form will be the focus a post-credit stinger.Captain Marvel is in theaters everywhere March 8, 2019.

Current Palme d’Or frontrunners Portrait of a Girl on Fire, Pain Glory, and Les Misérables got some new competition late Tuesday night with premiere of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) 98%. The Korean director’s follow-up to 2016’s Okja is an instant critical darling that earned rapturous bursts of applause not just at the end of its critics’ screening, but also in the middle of it, according to Vulture. Jessica Kiang of Variety called Bong’s social thriller Roaringly furious, because [its] target is so deserving…Parasite is a tick fat with the bitter blood of class rage. With just one day of competition films left before the closing night ceremony, most of the pundits agree one of the favorites above will walk away with the top prize – well unless Tarantino can pull off a shocker with Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. No voice for Sharon Tate? Tarantino and Robbie push back.Wednesday, May 22: The buzz and spectacle of the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood premiere undoubtedly stole some attention away from Parasite’s impressive debut: two days after the fictionalized retelling of the Manson Family murders debuted, it s still dominating the festival headlines. Reports broke late on Tuesday night that hundreds of ticket holders were turned away from the premiere; as some had paid as much as ,200 to secure one ticket to the starry event, and many members of the press were among those turned away, the festival was forced to issue an apology for the mixup. Then Wednesday afternoon Tarantino continued to make headlines during a press conference when he rejected the hypothesis of a question that said Margot Robbie had limited dialogue portraying the Manson Family murder victim, Sharon Tate. The Aussie actress, however, was quick to counter the assumption saying,  I think the moments I was on screen gave a moment to honor Sharon, I think the tragedy was the loss of innocence. To show the wonderful sides of her could be done without speaking. I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue, which is an interesting thing. Rarely do I get an opportunity to spend so much time on my own as a character. (Photo by Daniele Venturelli/WireImage)Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Gets Six-Minute Standing Ovation, But Tarantino Doesn t Want to Know the Tomatometer ScoreTuesday, May 21: The moment that all of Cannes – and just about everyone else – had been waiting for finally arrived on Monday night, when Quentin Tarantino premiered his ninth studio film, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Before the curtains parted for the screening of the Hollywood drama that s loosely based on the Manson Family s murder of Sharon Tate and others, Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux reiterated (in English and French) Tarantino s plea to avoid spoilers when discussing the film. It s debatable if such precautions were needed, but as of yet, most critics are keeping the key plot points out of reviews. Angeleno Tarantino was six years old when the Manson Murders rocked Hollywood and the nation, and critics are calling Once Upon A Time in Hollywood a deeply personal and violent ode to the summer of 69. While 1960s Hollywood played out on the screen, today s Hollywood looked: Timothée Chalamet, Chloe Sevigny, Diego Luna, Xavier Dolan, Tilda Swinton, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Chris Tucker, and Adrien Brody were all spotted at the premiere. Tarantino s close friend and Grindhouse co-director Robert Rodriguez was also on hand to congratulate and celebrate with cast and crew and gave us his one-word review: Outstanding! After enjoying a six-minute standing ovation at the premiere, Pitt, DiCaprio, and Tarantino headed to a glitzy after-party at the JW Marriott joined by most of the star power on the Rivera. During the party, Tarantino chatted with guests about film, Cannes memories, and was in high spirits. When we caught up with him, we asked if he wanted to know the Tomatometer score for the film (which we had just revealed), and he quickly recoiled as if we were about to shout a spoiler to his film. Oh God, no! he said, laughing.  If they re bad I wanna enjoy my night, and if they re good, it s a gift. A gift I will happily unwrap – tomorrow. Tarantino Asks Viewers Not to Spoil the Hollywood EndgameMonday, May 20: Everyone is worried about spoilers these days – even legendary director Quentin Tarantino. After a script for The Hateful Eight leaked before production began, forcing the director to make significant changes, Tarantino is taking no chances with his latest film. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, the A-lister–stuffed 60s period feature starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie, premieres Tuesday and has been shrouded in mystery. Little is known of the plot, save that it will feature numerous late 60 s icons such as Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Sharon Tate, and her infamous murderer Charles Manson. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes to promote his film The Mustang earlier in the year, costar Bruce Dern said, “All I can say is — this is me telling you — he’s a magician, because in this movie, he did something mad. It’s probably the most unique endeavor I’ve seen a director undertake and do. Without ruining the movie for you — I can’t tell you what that is, but the minute you get to see it, you will say, ‘Bruce Dern is absolutely right. ” Hoping to keep the movie s surprises under wraps as long as possible, Tarantino posted an open letter asking those that see it first to be mindful of spoilers, adding, The cast and crew have worked so hard to create something original, and I only ask that everyone avoids revealing anything that would prevent later audiences from experiencing the film in the same way. Rotten Tomatoes has secured a coveted ticket to the glamorous premiere, so check back here on Tuesday for the first reviews and a detailed recounting of the star-studded premiere and afterparty.Check out Everything We Know About Once Upon a Time In Hollywood

While The CW’s Arrowverse returns in a few weeks to set up the individual plots of each show, the week of October 6 will also likely feature more than one nod to the December crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” The longest running individual shows — Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC s Legends of Tomorrow — have been teasing the event since the conclusion of last winter’s “Elseworlds” crossover, and considering the story they are trying to adapt, spending a year teasing it is worthwhile. Crisis on Infinite Earths is a milestone in comics history and a beast of a story. But if all you ve heard about Crisis is its impressive scale, let s take a look at the story and everything we know about The CW s version of it to glean what it might look like and how it might change the Arrowverse come winter.DC’s Brand Is “Crisis”(Photo by Jack Rowand/The CW )In 1956, DC Comics began introducing new versions of many of their classic characters from wartime comics like All-Flash Comics and All-American Comics. Many of the mystical characters, like the original version of Green Lantern, were revamped into science fiction characters, but even science-based characters like The Flash saw radical changes in costume and character. But in tipping a hat to the past, writer Robert Kanigher included an interesting quirk in Barry Allen’s first story: he took his superhero identity from a comic book featuring the original Flash.Eventually, the two characters met (in The Flash #123), revealing the comics on Barry’s Earth-1 replicated the adventures of older Flash Jay Garrick, who happened to live on Earth-2. The story established the DC multiverse – a collection of parallel worlds where changes both big and small created new story potential – and it eventually led to big crossover in the pages of Justice League of America in which the heroes of Earth-1 and Earth-2 met to save the day.The crossover’s name was “Crisis on Earths 1 and 2.”It established a tradition for Justice League: Every so often, the League would face a Crisis, meeting the inhabitants of another Earth, and save the day. Besides showcasing other versions of characters or characters DC bought from other publishers, it proved to be a popular and fun gimmick.Worlds Lived, Worlds Died(Photo by Jeff Weddell/The CW)Flash forward a few decades and the collection of alternate worlds like Earth-3 (where the League is a criminal syndicate) and Earth-X (where World War II continues to rage into the 1980s) became too much for DC’s readers and editorial staff to keep straight. New Teen Titans writer Marv Wolfman, assigned to write to a definitive history of the DC Universe, campaigned to streamline the company’s shared reality into something much more manageable. It also gave the opportunity to tell a Ragnarok-style yarn. And in honor of those “Crisis” crossovers, it was eventually titled Crisis on Infinite Earths.Timed with DC’s 50th anniversary, the story saw characters from various Earths pulled together by a being known as The Monitor to stop his twin, The Anti-Monitor, from consuming all of the Multiverse until only his antimatter universe remained. It is stuffed with every character DC owned at the time — and even a few sneaky one-panel cameos from some Marvel Comics characters like Peter Parker — and charted destruction on a universal scale. In its opening moments, the Earth-3 mentioned above is destroyed. The death toll included some marquee characters like Barry Allen and Supergirl, but they were far from the only people lost during the Crisis.Roughly half-way through the series 12-issue run, only five universes remained. A plan is hatched to move them into a nether realm safe from the Anti-Monitor. These do not go exactly as planned, but the key editorial decision behind Crisis was accomplished: only one Earth remained to house all the DC Comics characters. Barry Allen was now directly inspired by Jay Garrick’s exploits as the Flash during World War II and an era of superheroes occurred decades before the arrival of Superman. The streamlining didn’t work out quite the way Wolfman and the editorial staff hoped — particularly as some individual titles waited as long as 18 months after Crisis’s conclusion to revamp their characters — but the story itself is a spectacular example of the event-storylines superhero comics would trade in for decades to come. Also, because nothing stays dead in superhero comics, the DC Multiverse eventually returned. The Pre-Crisis Lead-up(Photo by Diyah Pera/The CW)One thing we didn’t mention about Crisis was the set-up. A year before the series was due to launch, Wolfman introduced The Monitor in the pages of New Teen Titans #21 as a shadowy, ambiguous figure. The character began popping up in various titles — making his first full appearance in G.I. Combat #274 — before the first issue of Crisis revealed his real goal. This is key because The CW pulled the same trick in The Flash’s 100th episode. In its stinger scene, we’re introduced to The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett, pictured above) as he pronounces judgment on Earth-90. And as he seemingly ends that universe, it’s Flash (John Wesley Shipp, reprising his role from the 1990s Flash TV Show) speeds away to another Earth. With its red skies and dead heroes strewn about, the stinger couldn’t be more Crisis. It also left viewers curious about The Monitor s aims. And like the lead-up to the comic book Crisis, we suspect The Monitor will continue to intrude on the various series throughout the Fall. As seen in Arrow’s seventh season finale, The Monitor will be directing Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) on a mission which will, presumably, see him hopping to different realities. At least, we’re pretty certain that’s why we’ll see Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson) and Tommy Merlyn (Colin O’Donnell) alive and well in the season 8 premiere.Over on Flash, we expect he may taunt Barry (Grant Gustin) with the details of his upcoming disappearance. Slated for 2024 since the series began, the events of the program’s fifth season finale brought that ticking clock to 2019. Additionally, new villain Bloodwork s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) story will lead into the Crisis itself.Meanwhile, on Supergirl, The Monitor appeared to pull J’onn ‘Jonzz’s (David Harewood) brother Malefic out of time and space to cause trouble on Earth-38. And on Legends — well, he just watched the circus from afar. But that has to mean something, right? There Will Be A Crisis!(Photo by Katie Yu/The CW)The Monitor s distance from Legends may reflect the unusual broadcast pattern of “Crisis.” The story begins with the Dec. 8 episode of Supergirl, continuing into a special Monday night airing of Batwoman and a regularly scheduled Tuesday night episode of The Flash on Dec. 10 before pausing for the winter hiatus. The story then concludes on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with Arrow and a special episode of Legends. The show is literally as far as it can be from interacting with him and if the television Crisis follows the comic book plot, he may not be around to cause them much trouble.Other things we expect to see during Crisis include a trippy origin for the multiverse, plenty of in-jokes as worlds disappear, the shocking removal of The Monitor by the most unlikely character, a few Earths merging into one, and maybe even a heroic Luthor showing up to save the day.Oh, and many, many deaths.Like the source material, the body count during “Crisis” must be high. Will we lose King Shark or Gorilla Grodd? Will Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) appear from another Earth just to bite it again? Will former CCPD Captain Singh (Patrick Sabongui) make one last brave stand? It is hard to say. Recurring characters are definitively vulnerable, but a Crisis requires some key character sacrificing their lives to save the universe. Take you bets on whole looks like dead meat now.One echo of Crisis we don’t expect to see is the death of Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). For one thing, Oliver seemingly spared her that fate when he bargained with The Monitor for her life during “Elseworlds.” Also, her show isn’t ending and Benoist contract is not expiring. But Arrow itself is ending and one actor’s time on Supergirl is almost up. This makes Oliver and James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) more likely candidates to die during some noble sacrifice. And Crisis’s other famous death? We imagine the Earth-90 Flash will take Barry’s place in whatever destiny The Monitor foresaw for him. And considering the heartstrings Shipp can pull whenever he has to tell Gustin’s Barry goodbye, we expect this scene will rank high on the emotional scale. Also, as much as we love Carlos Valdes and Cisco Ramon, Crisis would be a good place to make a last stand. One Panel Cameos(Photo by Warner Bros. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)And like the Crisis comic, the crossover event will feature tons of special guests and cameos from the rich history of DC Comics television. As mentioned, Shipp will return for what we assume will be his last appearance as the 1990s Flash. Batman ’66’s Burt Ward will appear in an as-yet unannounced role while Batman: The Animated Series’s Kevin Conroy will finally make his on-screen debut as Bruce Wayne or, at least, a Bruce Wayne from the future.Meanwhile, Legends star Brandon Routh (pictured above) will appear as another Earth’s Superman (a callback to the time the actor starred as the character in 2006’s Superman Returns), while also appearing as his Legends character Ray Palmer. Tyler Hoechlin will also return as the Earth-38 Superman of Supergirl and, presumably, at least one or two more Supermen from other worlds. Elizabeth Tulloch and Jon Cryer will also return as the Earth-38 Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Also playing a double role is The Flash’s Tom Cavanagh. Besides portraying a new version of Harrison Wells, he will be taking on the role of Pariah, a key Crisis character. It may be one of the most inspired cast choices yet announced because of course Pariah — who sets the Anti-Monitor s wave of destruction in motion — is another Harrison Wells. At least, we’re assuming Pariah is another Wells. It feels right for the Arrowverse.Black Lightning will not be an official part of the crossover, but as confirmed in August, the characters will be making their Arrowverse debut during the episodes.Tying it all together will be Garrett, who will reprise his “Elseworlds” role as The Monitor and play the Anti-Monitor himself. The Post-Crisis Arrowverse(Photo by The CW)Back in the comics, the DC Universe following Crisis eventually took on the term Post-Crisis to differentiate itself from the days of the multiverse. In that new reality, the full extent of the Crisis was forgotten. The various worlds never existed and the survivors’ memories realigned to the new status quo. Only the criminal Psycho-Pirate recalled the Pre-Crisis multiverse and his memories lingered on as a potential threat. The Arrowverse after its “Crisis” may run along the same lines. If Earth-1 and Earth-38 merge, it is entirely possible no one will remember a time when National City, Supergirl, and the rest were absent from Earth-1. This may be the real reason The Flash will feature a new big bad in the spring — initial villain Bloodwork may have been erased from existence. For the moment, though, we’re going to assume Black Lighting will continue on in its own separate universe even if we’d love to see Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams, pictured above) and the rest of his family interact with Team Flash or Supergirl’s Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath). Sadly the realities of production — Black Lighting shoots in Atlanta while the rest of the shows shoot in Vancouver — make it more difficult for the characters to strike up friendships. But a potential Earth-1/Earth-38 merger makes the friendship between Batwoman (Ruby Rose) and Kara much more likely. Instead of hopping across a universe, Gotham City would be a short flight away. And much like the streamlining of the DC Universe in the 1980s made relationships across the different generations of heroes possible, we want all six shows to interact as freely as they can.As for Batwoman itself, it is hard to say how the Crisis will leave a lasting impact. The series will only be eight episodes old by the time it is over and not really established. Perhaps exposing Kate to the strange cosmic workings of the universe will leave some impression on her. Ultimately, though, it will have to get back to telling its story.Which is the case of all of the shows, of course. Flash will get a new villain, Arrow will conclude its run with two episodes following Crisis, Supergirl will power on, and Legends will continue to be Legends. But Crisis will leave its mark for anyone willing to look closer and wonder if the old status quo can ever be revived. And like Psycho-Pirate, we will remember when worlds lived, worlds died, and everything was changed.Like this? (Photo by Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection.)All Joel Schumacher Movies, Ranked by TomatometerYour typical journeyman director deep in the studio system will make movies across plenty of genres, on-time and under-budget, foster some lasting professional relationships, and never make a name for themselves beyond to the most ardent, specific film buffs. Yes, Joel Schumacher worked across multiple genres without a thematic throughline, with studios and actors quick to praise his behind-the-scenes professionalism, but the director also brought enough verve and dynamic color to his films that Schumacher s name, at his creative peak, did become a kind of brand. A calling card of big Hollywood entertainment with style to separate from the rest. This began in earnest in 1987 with the Brat Pack-adjacent The Lost Boys, the stylish horror/comedy that pulled vampires out of cliff-nested castles and into teen parties and suburbia, a popular concept still seen in the likes of True Blood and Twilight. Having made Kiefer Sutherland a star, Schumacher worked with him again on his next film, Flatliners.Schumacher entered his most commercially viable period in the 90s, starting with 1993 s Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas on a particularly bad Los Angeles day, in a film that has been latched onto as a manifesto of urban rage still discussed and referenced now. Schumacher took the reins for 1995 s Batman Forever after Tim Burton and Michael Keaton left the blockbuster franchise. Some inspired casting (Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face), plenty of wild art direction, a brash soundtrack, and just a touch of camp turned the movie into pop-culture phenomenon. A year later, Schumacher released A Time To Kill at a time when anything Grisham, Crichton, and Clancy was being adapted and making a mint at the box office. (Schumacher had previously turned Grisham s The Client into a movie.)Then came the disastrous Batman Robin, which killed the franchise for nearly a decade. Schumacher took full ownership for the movie s failure, claiming that he had steered too far towards what marketing and merchandising wanted out of a Batman joint. A public bomb of this proportion could ve been a career-ender, but his workmanship and a steady line of stars willing to collaborate time and again meant the next Schumacher film was never far off. He worked twice with Colin Farrell, first in 2000 s Tigerland, which introduced the actor to American audiences, and then in 2003 s Phone Booth, which made Farrell a star. Sutherland, back in the saddle, played the villain. Schumacher can be credited with helping launch Gerard Butler s career in full, when he cast him as lead in 2005 s The Phantom of the Opera. In 2007, Schumacher worked again with Carrey for psychological thriller The Number 23. His final film was 2011 s Trespass, reuniting him with 8MM s Nicolas Cage and Batman Forever s Nicole Kidman. We celebrate his life and career with our guide to every Joel Schumacher film, by Tomatometer.

One of the biggest movie franchises on the planet expands outward with Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw. The spin-off stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as their respectively titular characters from the Fast and the Furious series as they reluctantly team up to take on a superhuman villain played by Idris Elba. What ensues is less a F F movie than a silly superhero action movie, according to its first reviews. You mostly get what you expect, plus a standout Vanessa Kirby and surprise cameos, if you’re just interested in dumb popcorn fare. Here’s what critics are saying about Hobbs Shaw:How does it fit in the Fast Furious franchise? The spin-off film is nigh unrecognizable from the gritty low-level crime days of early Fast and Furious, and even the high-stakes heists of the more recent films.  Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmToo sci-fi for the world of Fast Furious… the bionic stuff is anathema to the franchise’s core, meat-based values.  Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIt’s all a little sci-fi for the Fast Furious franchise, though it’s arguably no more ridiculous than launching parachute-sporting cars out of planes.  James Mottram, Total FilmIt’s a Fast Furious movie that doesn’t really care that it’s a part of the franchise.  Germain Lussier, io9What really stands out from this Fast movie is how little help it needs from the franchise for it to work.  Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderDoes it meet expectations otherwise? It delivers some bangs and laughs for your buck.  Peter Bradshaw, GuardianIf you liked Johnson and Statham’s big jailbreak in Fate of the Furious and thought you’d want to see a whole movie of that duo, then you’re in luck. And it’s as awesome as you’d hoped. Edward Douglas, The BeatIt’s not going to change your life but if you are looking for a silly, over-the-top entertainment with very likable leads than there is more than enough to enjoy here. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netI get it, you, the audience, have bought a ticket for the punches and perhaps the punchlines… But do we not deserve better? J. Don Birnam, Splash Report(Photo by Frank Masi / © Universal)How is the chemistry between Johnson and Statham? The back and forth banter between the two of them is hilariously written, and their deadpan delivery is incredible. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHobbs Shaw is anchored by excellent comedic chemistry between Johnson and Statham, building on their dynamic from the previous film and ensuring laughs are in ample supply. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewJohnson and Statham do have great chemistry and comedically play off each other well. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThe actors always feel like they’re trying to outdo each other. At times, that chemistry works well, but eventually it gets a little repetitive and numbing. Germain Lussier, io9Simultaneously the best and worst parts of the film are Hobbs and Shaw’s arguments… these scenes start to drag once they’ve been going on for over five minutes straight. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmIs Idris Elba a satisfying villain?Idris Elba as the evil Brixton Lorr is phenomenal. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentElba is truly savage throughout in a could’ve-been-Bond performance of action and brute force. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsElba allures through all that relentless cyborg glint, but he nonetheless feels like an unwelcome visitor from a different franchise. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)Who really owns the movie? For all the hyper-male puffing, Hobbs Shaw is most memorable for the opportunities it gives to Vanessa Kirby. Donald Clarke, Irish TimesIt’s a pleasure to watch Kirby go from cigarette-addled Princess Margaret on The Crown to this commanding bit of action-heroing. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairI was particularly impressed with Kirby, who holds her own. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netWhat I love about the character is that she doesn’t have to sit around and let the men fight for her… her fight scenes are amazing and prove her range as an actress. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentWhat s all this about cameos? Some of the film’s biggest laughs come courtesy of two scene-stealing cameos that we won’t spoil here. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewHas some great surprises for the audience with a few A+ cameos. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderThese cameos are a delight to stumble upon, and I would suggest you go in not knowing who you’ll see. It adds to the magic of the film. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe film gets weighed down by its self-indulgent excess and distracting cameos from the cast and crew’s best buddies. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by © Universal)This is all that matters: How is the action? The action scenes are where Hobbs Shaw truly excels. Candice Frederick, The WrapThe action in the film is off the charts. Some scenes are sure to leave your jaw on the floor. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentBoasts a chase sequence — featuring a helicopter, a tow truck, and a group of souped-up hot rods — that’s absolutely bonkers. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewThe early action sequences are impressively choreographed but disappointingly limp, delivering none of the bombast that a Hobbs Shaw movie would promise. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmSomewhere around the midpoint of Hobbs Shaw, the action sequences become so elaborate that they start to weigh the movie down. Stephanie Zacharek, TimeIt’s only in the final third when the fight choreography gets a little too incoherent that you realize you don’t give a damn about anything that’s happening. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comIs Hobbs Shaw too cartoonish even for a Fast Furious movie?Hobbs Shaw checks all the boxes for the rousing, over-the-top ludicrousness you’d expect… [but it] tests the limits of that absurdity. Brian Truitt, USA TodayFrom motorcycles that transform and cars that twist in the air, to jumping off buildings and slow-motion fistfights, the whole movie is a cartoon. Germain Lussier, io9It’s basically a cartoon, a machismo-laden thrill ride that borders on parody and is, at times, unspeakably dumb, but in the best possible way. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewIn Fast   Furious, is there really such a thing as too much? James Mottram, Total Film(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)What s really missing here?Without its own identity, without an interesting hook or resonant emotional through-line, most of the movie feels rather shallow — like it’s trying to impress us instead of engage us. Germain Lussier, io9One yearns for the old heart-to-hearts between Diesel and the late Paul Walker…Hobbs  Shaw forgets to maintain the balance of insanity and heart that makes the series special. Brian Truitt, USA TodayBut who needs Oscars anyway, right? When compared to, say, the last five movies to win best picture, there’s a sense that [it’s] doing more to advance film literacy — while bludgeoning all other aspects of our intellect in the process. Peter Debruge, Variety[The Fast Furious movies are] made solely for entertainment purposes, and for the most part, they always deliver. Hobbs Shaw is no exception. 亚博投注提款秒到 The 93rd Academy Awards were unlike any other we ve witnessed in recent memory or possibly ever before as the ceremony was structured to accommodate social distancing measures brought about by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The result was an unusually intimate, subdued ceremony filled with personal anecdotes and touching tributes. Of course, that doesn t mean things didn t get a little wacky from time to time ( Glenn Close doin Da Butt is officially a thing now), and there were still plenty of larger-than-life moments, from incredible musical performances and tear-filled dedications to laugh-out-loud one-liners and groundbreaking milestones.Recommended: Full List of Winners from the 2021 Academy AwardsRecommended: The Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2021 Oscar NominationsRecommended: All the Winners of the 2020 Golden Tomato AwardsThings started with a bang, as H.E.R. performed an amazing rendition of her Oscar-winning song Fight For You before the ceremony started and Regina King kicked off the festivities by entering Los Angeles iconic Union Station in a stunning single tracking shot as the credits rolled. From there, we got tear-filled dedications, inspirational speeches, laugh-out-loud one-liners, and groundbreaking milestones. Read on for the biggest moments of the 2021 Oscars.H.E.R. Delivers Showstopping Performance of “Fight For You” Before Winning Best Original SongThose expecting to see the much hyped-up pre-recorded performances of this year’s Best Song nominees during the show were likely disappointed to learn that the five songs were actually shown during ABC’s pre-show. The standout performance was also the final performance: H.E.R.’s rousing rendition of “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah, which incorporated archival footage and a battery of dancers to deliver a chills-inducing moment just minutes before the start of the ceremony. The song went on to win Best Original Song in the ceremony proper.Regina King Enters in Epic One-ShotWe were told in the lead-up to tonight’s ceremony that Steven Soderbergh and his co-producers wanted the night to play out like a film – and the first minutes of the broadcast delivered on that promise. Bringing to mind those famous opening moments of Goodfellas, a single camera shot tracked Regina King – her Oscar firmly in hand – as she walked into LA’s Union Station, through its cavernous hall, and onto the stage. Throughout the entire shot, cinematic credits announced the various presenters (“starring…”). King kicked things off by marking the conviction of Derek Chauvin earlier this week: Now, I know that a lot of you people at home wanna reach for your remote when you feel like Hollywood is preaching to you, but as a mother of a Black son, I know the fear that so many live with, and no amount of fame or fortune changes that, OK? Thomas Vinterberg Pays Moving Tribute to His DaughterUpon winning the Oscar for Best International Film for Another Round, director Thomas Vinterberg began his acceptance speech as anyone might expect, thanking the appropriate parties who supported the film and those with whom he worked directly on it, including the four main actors at the heart of the story. But midway through his speech, Vinterberg recounted how, four days into shooting the film, he lost his daughter Ida in a tragic auto accident. As he paused and wiped tears from his face, Vinterberg collected himself and explained how she had read the script two months prior to production and was glowing with excitement about the film, in which she was originally supposed to appear. Vinterberg closed by dedicating the film to Ida, saying, If anyone dares to believe that she s here with us somehow, you ll be able to see her clapping and cheering with us Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you are part of this miracle. Maybe you ve been pulling some strings somewhere; I don t know. But this one is for you. Daniel Kaluuya Embarrasses His FamilyAfter missing out on the Best Actor Oscar back in 2018, Daniel Kaluuya became the sixth Black actor to win Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards on Sunday night. Speaking off the cuff, Kaluuya thanked the usual folks and gushed about his collaborators while his mother and sister, both in attendance at LA s Union Station, looked on. As he wound up his acceptance speech with some inspirational words about Fred Hampton, the ico

PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WANTS TO WORK WITH JOHN BOYEGA (Photo by Everett Collection)It s not uncommon for Hollywood celebrities to voice their political opinions, and when they do, there are sometimes unintended consequences. Recent Star Wars alumnus John Boyega took to the streets in London this week for a Black Lives Matter protest in support of the movement against police brutality, which sparked up again dramatically following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, MN on May 26. During an impassioned speech, Boyega acknowledged the risk inherent in an entertainment figure speaking out in such a manner, saying, Look, I don t know if I m going to have a career after this, but f that. As it turned out, he didn t have anything to worry about, because a deluge of support came in from Hollywood filmmakers eager to work with Boyega on future projects. The list includes Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), who said, We got you, John Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie); Lin-Manuel Miranda, who said, Oh god I WISH Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), who said, Have before and would again Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep); Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), who said, Absolutely Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), who said, Anytime at all and also the official Star Wars Twitter account. Boyega s next two films are likely to be an action thriller called Rebel Ridge and a legal drama called Naked Singularity, but it looks like he ll have no shortage of options after that.2. J.K. SIMMONS CONFIRMS RETURN TO SPIDER-MAN(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)For the most part, the Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield and now Tom Holland have gone their own way with casting the supporting characters. However, fans were surprised at the end of last year s Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%) to discover that Marvel Studios actually brought back J.K. Simmons for a brief cameo as J. Jonah Jameson, the role he played Sam Raimi s three Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films. The cameo seemed to tease a potential premise for Tom Holland s third solo Spider-Man movie, and this week, Simmons confirmed that he is indeed signed to return for more Spider-Man sequels (note the plural there). There was, however, some doubt in his statement, because Simmons said, I don’t know if I would use the word ‘expect' when asked if fans can expect to see him in the next film. The next Spider-Man doesn t have an official title (though it s rumored to possibly be Spider-Man: Home Run), but it does have a release date scheduled for November 6, 2021 (pushed back four months from next July due to pandemic-related production delays).3. THE FIRST FEMALE STAR WARS DIRECTOR GETS READY TO KILL THEM ALL (Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images)As director J.J. Abrams was preparing to return for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Rotten at 52%), one of his key creative decisions was to make history by hiring actress-turned-filmmaker Victoria Mahoney as his second unit director, making her the first ever woman to serve as a director on a Star Wars film. Mahoney is now signed with Paramount Pictures for what will be her first film as a director (not counting second unit, obviously) since her 2011 debut drama Yelling to the Sky, and it will be an action movie called Kill Them All.  The screenplay by screenwriter James Coyne will be an adaptation of an Oni Press graphic novel described as a love letter to 1990s action movies about a hard-drinking former cop who wants his job back and a betrayed murderess who team up to take down a vicious Miami crime lord.4. SCORSESE HAS REWRITTEN DICAPRIO S ROLE IN KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)For pretty much the entire time that Martin Scorsese has been developing his adaptation of the true crime novel Killers of the Flower Moon, about an early serial killer case investigated by the F.B.I., he was planning on working with frequent collaborators Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Along the way, we learned that De Niro was to play the serial killer, and that DiCaprio would be playing one of the lead F.B.I. agents investigating the case. Unfortunately, having Leonardo DiCaprio in a lead role may have led the film s budget to balloon past 0 million. In an effort to keep that cost down, Scorsese has reportedly made changes to DiCaprio s role, which will now instead be a villain (or anti-hero) who is a nephew of De Niro s character and leaves the door open for another (cheaper) actor to play the federal agent. The revelations of these changes came out due to Apple taking over Killers of the Flower Moon from Paramount Pictures. Paramount will still release Killers of the Flower Moon theatrically, and then the film will move to Apple+ for streaming.5. TITO PUENTE BIOPIC NOW BEING DEVELOPED BY EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (Photo by Everett Collection)Thanks to the recent success of Bohemian Rhapsody (Fresh at 60%), Rocketman, and Judy, we re currently in the midst of a mini-boom for musician biopics. The pandemic has obviously delayed film production and release, but two movies that will come out soon are the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect (starring Jennifer Hudson) (12/25/2020) and Baz Luhrmann s Elvis Presley project (11/5/2021), while other musicians with biopics in development include the Bee Gees, Boy George, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, and Amy Winehouse. Thanks to Edward James Olmos, we can also now add Tito Puente, the King of Mambo, to that list, as Olmos is now working with Puente s family and estate on film and TV projects based on Puente s life and legacy. Before his death in 2000 at the age of 77, Tito Puente had a 50+ year career that included six Grammy Awards (including a lifetime achievement award) as a mambo and Latin jazz musician, band leader, songwriter, and record producer. Puente s most famous song was probably Oye Como Va (thanks in part to Santana also recording the song for their 1970 album Abraxas).6. MORBIUS DIRECTOR TAKING ON THE TRUE STORY OF THE EXECUTION (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Before the current pandemic caused industry-wide production delays, Sony s adaptation of the Marvel Comics vampire character Morbius (starring Jared Leto) was to have been released next month on July 10, 2020 (it s now scheduled for March 19, 2021). Morbius was directed by Daniel Espinosa (Child 44, Safe House), who this week entered into a deal to develop The Execution, which is described as a narrative drama about the background to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi Arabian-born dissident and Washington Post columnist who was killed in Istanbul in 2018. The true story behind The Execution will be adapted by screenwriter Petter Skavlan, who also worked on 2012 s Kon-Tiki (Certified Fresh at 81%), which was based on the true story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl s expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a raft.

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering stories from the last few weeks (because of the holidays) for titles such as Final Destination, Ghostbusters 3, Disney s Hunchback, and Monopoly. This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM CRUISE S MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 COMING IN 2021 AND 2022(Photo by Chiabella James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of those examples, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. VIDEO GAME MOVIES STILL ROTTEN, HOLLYWOOD STILL MAKING MOVIES LIKE JUST DANCE (Photo by Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios)We frequently talk about how bad video game-based movies have been over the years; there isn t a single Fresh film among the 47-plus that have been made. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).
