This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering titles like The Batman, Fantastic Beasts 3, Jurassic World 3, and Scream 5. [Note: This article has been updated to correct an erroneous role attribution and the implication that Wes Craven is still alive.]This WEEK S TOP STORYTHE BATMAN FINDS ITS ALFRED AND PENGUIN(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)During the period when Jonah Hill was reportedly in talks for a villain role in The Batman (6/25/2021), various reports suggested the role was either that of the Riddler or the Penguin. Within hours of the announcement that Hill was no longer being considered, Paul Dano (Swiss Army Man, Love Mercy) was reported as being in talks to play the Riddler, but the casting of the Penguin remained a mystery for almost a month. In 2003, Colin Farrell costarred in Marvel s Daredevil as the villain Bullseye opposite Ben Affleck, whose departure from The Batman eventually led to the role going to Robert Pattinson instead. Everything came full circle this week as Farrell is now in talks to play the Penguin as the film s third cast villain (alongside Dano and Zoe Kravitz, who will be playing Catwoman). Andy Serkis, who appeared in a couple MCU movies as the vibranium-themed villain Klaw, is also in talks to play Bruce Wayne s butler Alfred Pennyworth. Although three villains might seem like plenty for just one movie, Kevin Smith claimed last month that The Batman will be adapted from the 1996-1997 storyline Batman: The Long Halloween, which also featured Mad Hatter, Poison Ivy, the Scarecrow, and Two-Face, so there may still be more villains yet to be cast.Other Top Headlines1. DUNE SEQUEL ALREADY IN THE WORKS(Photo by Jan Thijs /© Paramount Pictures)Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) is currently working on his adaptation of Dune, the popular science fiction novel by Frank Hebert that was first brought to the big screen by David Lynch in 1984. That movie doesn t come out for another thirteen months (12/18/2020), but Warner Bros. must really like what they ve seen of it so far, as the news came out this week that a screenwriter has already been hired to work on the second Dune movie. That job is going to screenwriter Jon Spaihts, the sole screenwriter credited for 2016 s Passengers, who also co-wrote the Alien prequel Prometheus, Marvel s Doctor Strange, and Villeneuve s first Dune movie. Spaihts had been working for HBO Max as the showrunner of a Dune: The Sisterhood series, but he s stepping down from that responsibility to focus on the second Dune instead. There have been reports in the past that the first new Dune movie will only adapt about half of the eponymous novel, so it may be more accurate to describe the second Dune movie not so much as a sequel as a continuation of the same adaptation (sort of like IT and IT: Chapter Two). Denis Villeneuve s all-star Dune cast includes Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson (as Lady Jessica), and Timothée Chalamet (as Paul Atreides).2. DWAYNE JOHNSON PRODUCING TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS TRUE STORIES (Photo by HBO)Just months after producing and co-starring (as himself) in the professional wrestling true story Fighting with My Family (Certified Fresh at 92%), Dwayne Johnson has attached himself to at least produce two other sports movies based on true stories. The first was announced late last Friday, as Johnson will produce and star in an untitled film about UFC champion Mark Kerr in what is being described as Johnson s first true dramatic role. The announcement was made at a UFC event at Madison Square Garden. Mark Kerr is a two-time UFC champion who was also the subject of a 2003 HBO documentary called The Smashing Machine. The other film Johnson is now producing is Unstoppable (not to be confused with the Denzel Washington/Chris Pine movie about a runaway train), a drama about undefeated three-time All-American college wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg.3. CHRIS PINE, ZAC EFRON REPLACE SETH ROGEN IN TWO SEPARATE MOVIES(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)There were enough movie news stories this week to fill two editions of The Weekly Ketchup, mostly because Wednesday marked the beginning of this year s American Film Market, which is where many non-studio movie projects try to find funding and distribution. Two of the higher profile movies this week now have different lead actors after previously being Seth Rogen vehicles. The first is Newsflash, which will depict the events of November 22, 1963 from the perspective of CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he broke the news of President John F. Kennedy s assassination to a shocked nation. (The news of Chris Pine replacing Seth Rogen on Newsflash actually first broke in August.) Newsflash will be directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, whose The Current War: Director s Cut (Fresh at 60%) was just released, two years after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2017. Seth Rogen was also replaced this week by Zac Efron in another fact-based drama called King of the Jungle, as a reporter who travels to Belize to interview the controversial anti-virus software innovator John McAfee (a role that also needs to be replaced following the departure of Michael Keaton). Seth Rogen s next film will be An American Pickle, about a factory worker who wakes up in 2019 Brooklyn 100 years after being pickled at a pickle factory.4. JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM CO-STARS RETURN FOR JURASSIC WORLD 3(Photo by Giles Keyte, Jaimie Trueblood ©Universal Pictures)Although the original Jurassic Park is Certified Fresh at 91%, three of the four sequels have been Rotten, including the most recent film, last year s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (48%). Universal Pictures is preparing Jurassic World 3 (A.K.A. Jurassic Park 6, basically) for release on June 11, 2021, with the biggest casting news to date being the impending returns of three of the first movie s stars (Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill). We now know that two of Fallen Kingdom s stars, namely Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda, will also be returning to co-star alongside Jurasic World s Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.5. TERMINATOR: DARK FATE BOX OFFICE KILLS THE FRANCHISE (Photo by Kerry Brown / © Paramount)In the last 10 years, there have been three different attempts to reboot the Terminator franchise, starting with Terminator: Salvation (Rotten at 33%) in 2009, continuing with Terminator Genisys (Rotten at 27%) in 2015, and this past week s Terminator: Dark Fate (Fresh at 71%). That last Tomatometer is possibly sadly ironic, because the return of James Cameron as producer may have helped raised the Tomatometer score, but the film s box office did not see a corresponding upswing. Instead, the million opening weekend for Terminator: Dark Fate is being reported as a bomb that will likely mean a loss for Paramount Pictures of upwards of 0 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to Skydance say there are certainly no plans for another film at this point, and some of the pundits interviewed suggested that a TV series (possibly animated) may be the next step for the Terminator franchise.6. SCREAM FRANCHISE TO BE REBOOTEDAnother franchise that has struggled for Fresh Tomatometer scores following a promising start is Scream, which started with a Certified Fresh 79% and 82% for the first two movies, followed by a Rotten 39% for Scream 3, and a barely Fresh 60% for Scream 4 in 2011. More recently, Scream found new life as a TV show for three seasons, two of which also received Rotten Tomatometer scores from critics. The Scream franchise was always one of the crown jewels of producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and like many of their properties, the rights to Scream have new owners following the Weinstein Company s bankruptcy. The new owners are Spyglass Media Group, and Spyglass is now developing a fifth Scream movie, but it s not yet clear whether that film will be a reboot or just another direct sequel. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who penned the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, is not expected to be involved with the new movie.7. PARAMOUNT PLANNING 2021 RELEASES FOR PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 7 AND MY LITTLE PONY 2(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)It s easy to forget this little bit of trivia now, as Marvel Studios is so thoroughly associated with Walt Disney Pictures, but early movies like Iron Man were actually produced for Paramount Pictures. Losing the Marvel movies was arguably one of the biggest setbacks in recent years for Paramount, prompting the studio to look elsewhere for potential franchises, including next year s G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes (10/16/2020), as well as Sonic the Hedgehog (2/14/2020) and Rugrats (1/29/2021). This week, Paramount announced release dates in 2021 for two more sequels, though both follow on the heels of Rotten movies. First, Paramount has scheduled Paranormal Activity 7 for March 19, 2021, which will be coming after three other Rotten Paranormal Activity films (24% in 2012, 39% in 2014, and 14% in 2015). The Tomatometer for My Little Pony: The Movie (Rotten at 48%) was better, but still not Fresh, and Paramount is still scheduling a My Little Pony sequel for September 24, 2021 as well.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by HBO)The dawn of a new day breaks on Westeros in “The Last of the Starks,” episode 4 of Game of Thrones season 8. And it’s a grim one.The pyres are piled high with bodies of every stripe: Dothraki, Night’s Watch, Northern warriors, Mormonts, a Dondarrion, and on.How do you follow that? Lots of alcohol.1. Funeral(Photo by HBO)The remaining revengers assemble to say goodbye to the heroes who gave their lives fighting the army of the dead. (The revenging will have to wait – though not for long.)“They were the shields that guarded the realms of men, and we shall never see their like again,” Jon Snow says, in a nod to the Night’s Watch creed.Ghost survived, so we have that to thankful for. We’ll later see that he was battered and had his ear torn, and we wonder why Jon wouldn’t pull a surviving stable boy aside and tell him to – gently – tend to the direwolf, feed him, and give him a bath. That wolf is still covered in wight funk the last time we see him.2. Dinner(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)At dinner, Daenerys legitimizes Gendry: He is now Lord Gendry Baratheon of Storm’s End.Tyrion and Ser Davos continue their strange friendship in the only eulogy that Melisandre will likely receive.“To Arya Stark, the hero of Winterfell,” Daenerys says, but Arya is nowhere to be found.Tyrion outs Brienne as a virgin, which is so not cool to do in public that we really wish Tyrion would never drink again. At least Brienne gets something out of it Then there was the Starbucks cup controversy:You re telling me they had TWO YEARS to put together a decent show and they couldn t even spot the goddamn Starbucks cup in Winterfell??!?! #GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/8opg7nyydv Jenna Guillaume (@JennaGuillaume) May 6, 20193. Relationship Drama(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Gendry finds Arya, tells her his good news, and proposes to her in a hugely romantic gesture. She turns him down (we think): “I’m not a lady. I never have been. That’s not me.” But she can totally be a “not a lady” with Gendry — in a nice, historic castle with lands and loyal bannermen to grab some ale after work with.Who was that smiling at Podrick after dinner? She’s in for a surprise. Later, he embraces both her and a woman whose advances The Hound spurned. Correction: They’re in for a surprise.Jaime seduces Brienne – “I’ve never slept with a knight before” – then leaves her. On his way out, he confesses to her that he pushed Bran from the tower, he strangled his cousin, and he would have murdered everyone at Riverrun for Cersei: “She’s hateful. And so am I.” Brienne sobs. Been there, girl.Tormund’s wildling heart breaks at dinner over Brienne. The Hound is not interested. Willa says he can touch her, and Tormund miraculously recovers. And Gilly is pregnant. Can’t help but wonder: Will full-Craster Little Sam inherit Horn Hill or this half-Craster–Tarly child?4. Daenerys UnravelsAt dinner, Daenerys becomes crazy-eyed jealous when Tormund puts Jon in the spotlight and calls him “king.” Her seething gets Varys’ attention.Later in private, Daenerys tells Jon she loves him, but their kinship stops him mid-snog. She wants to un-know that he’s Rhaegar’s child. When he tells her that he has to tell Arya and Sansa who he is, she replies, “I’ve never begged for anything, but I’m begging you. Don’t do this. Please.”She’s under stress and people are seeing her sweat. “We’ll rip her out root and stem,” Daenerys says in a strategy session. You can see the mad king ranting and burning Starks in Varys’ eyes when he looks at her.Tyrion and Varys convince Daenerys not to immediately burn down the Red Keep and all of the innocents Cersei has gathered to her side as dragon-fodder should Daenerys attack. When Sansa suggests – Daenerys: stop talking, Sansa.“We have won the Great War. Now we will win the Last War,” Daenerys promises, and looks at Sansa. “In all Seven Kingdoms, men will live without fear and cruelty – under their rightful queen.” (Her attitude will come back to bite Daenerys in the butt when Sansa weighs whether or not to share a big secret.)5. Family DramaDebbie DayJon agonizes during the Stark family meeting in the godswood over whether to tell his sisters that he s really their cousin. Arya calls him “brother,” as in full rights to bogart the TV remote brother. He s dying inside and tells Bran to tell them – he’s not officially responsible for having told them if Bran tells him, right? He never really promised Daenerys that he wouldn’t anyway.Despite promising to keep his secret, Sansa promptly tells Tyrion, who promptly tells Varys, who notes that it’s no longer a secret, but is now “information” (which is a commodity he trades in).“A Targaryen father and a Stark mother – Jon’s the one man alive who might actually be able to keep the North in the Seven Kingdoms,” Varys says.Tyrion calls Varys’ musings “treason.”“You know where my loyalty stands. You know I will never betray the realm,” Varys says, in what may be the most important exchange in the episode.6. R.I.P.(Photo by HBO)When the Targaryen fleet drops anchor off of Dragonstone, Euron Greyjoy attacks. He has mounted scorpions on the front of his ships and unleashes on Rhaegal, who dies horrifically and plunges into the sea. Daenerys moves to attack, but retreats when she realizes how vulnerable Drogon is. Euron then attacks the Targaryen fleet, and, we later find out, takes Missandei prisoner.Tyrion, Daenerys, Grey Worm, and a group of Unsullied arrive at the walls of King’s Landing to deliver a message: surrender and release Missandei of Narth. Instead, The Mountain beheads Missandei, whose last word is “Dracarys,” indicating to her queen, we thought, that she should burn King’s Landing to the ground.(Photo by HBO)Plus, Arya takes the King’s Road with The Hound to settle some “unfinished business.” (Arya says she doesn’t plan on coming back to Winterfell, which sounds ominous – Sansa only just got her sister back. Don t leave me alone with weird Bran!) Bronn negotiates with the Lannister brothers: Their lives in exchange for Highgarden, the former home of the extinct House Tyrell. And, Jon tells Tormund to take Ghost with him beyond the Wall. OK, but who doesn’t hug their direwolf when they leave forever? Bad form, Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name.Next week on episode 5: The Last War.What was your favorite moment of the episode? Tell us in the comments!Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

ten Tomatoes had the chance to pose our lingering questions to Lemire, actor Neil Sandilands (who plays antagonist General Abbot), and executive producers Jim Mickle and Beth Schwartz about some of the program s locations, serendipitous moments, and where it might go in a potential second season. Why Is the Essex County Zoo So Important in the Show?(Photo by Kirsty Griffin/Netflix)One of the more unexpected elements of the series — particularly for readers of Lemire s comics — was the sudden importance of the Essex County Zoo that Aimee (Dania Ramirez) and Wendy (Naledi Murray) were using as a home and sanctuary for Hybrids. Even the name is a surprise as it nods directly to Lemire s earlier Essex County trilogy of graphic novels — a detail Lemire said eagle-eyed viewers will spot as early as episode 2 before it gets a prominent shot in episode 5.Beyond its name, the zoo also serves as part of the show s fairy-tale tone and way to reconcile the program s relocation of events from Lemire s home country of Canada to the Midwestern United States. Obviously it has a slightly different geography than the comic book because of the Nebraska angle, he explained. [But] once we got to New Zealand, it was like, This doesn t look like Nebraska. How do we [do this?]' Soon, the production found our own real logic or geography as they fairy tale-ize the landscape between Yellowstone National Park, Colorado, and an Essex County, which is a cousin — by way of Lemire s rich universe — to the one he grew up in. It is magnificent, Sandiland said of the set. It really feels like you re in a theme park somewhere. Although some of the exteriors were shot at the Auckland Zoo, much of the Essex County Zoo was created on a sound stage. The actor recalled a major shot when Abbot first arrives with the Last Men militia. They had one of those huge extension arms [for the camera]. The vehicles [are] moving in, going all the way, pulling back, and then [the camera goes] all the way across to where Abbott is standing on top of that structure, facing the zoo. That was done on a sound stage. So just to give you an idea of the enormity of it. In terms of the narrative, the Zoo will seemingly take the place of the Last Man camp featured in the comic book. That may be the reason why the set is so lovingly rendered by a design team Sandilands called just next level. Although, he declined to confirm if the Last Men will be camping there while Dr. Singh (Adeel Akhtar) attempts to process the cure.Of course, any details of a potential second season are unknown to him and, as it happens, he chose not to read ahead in the comic in order to make the discovery of the story as the production progresses; a valid acting choice that may also help explain one of Sandilands more distinct visual departures from the character as drawn by Lemire. Why Does General Abbot Look So Different from the Comic?(Photo by Netflix)When we spoke to Schwartz before the series debuted earlier this month, she said it was possible the strikingly-long beard Abbot sports may have been Sandilands own lockdown beard, a supposition the actor partially confirmed for us. Lockdown had quite a bit to do with it, he said. I did another little local project [just before Sweet Tooth] where I sported the beard. And I thought, It s definitely a look, right? There s something going on there. And I just decided to keep growing it. And little did I know that it becomes quite a thing. As it turns out, the hair and makeup team were supportive of the choice, going so far as to email Sandilands before he flew to New Zealand to make sure he kept it.Mickle and Schwartz were also supportive, though some discussions about the beard took place. It is a collaborative thing. I think a lot of people have to buy into the look. And we had time to play around with it, he said. Jim sent me some of the images that we did on set with a full-on hair, makeup, wardrobe test and when I got those stills, I was really rather surprised in a good way. The look was just so striking with the beard, with the glasses, with the lighting, with the color, everything. So that came as a pleasant surprise. And I think an actor draws from a lot of external input stimulus prior to going on set and starting to build the character. Another aspect of the character which may come as a surprise to viewers is his composure — something often lacking in post-apocalyptic warlords. Deliberate restraint is always a good thing, Sandilands said. As we ve seen in his encounters with Singh, Singh s predecessor, Dr. Bell (Sarah Peirse), and even the words he said to Aimee from across the Zoo, he presents himself as someone who doesn t need to raise his voice to get his point across. And as Sandilands sees it, the character strikes a certain mystique. He s intriguing enough that you would want to know, like, who the hell is this f er? What is he really capable of? How deep can we go? I think there s a lot of miles in that tank left to be explored, he said.Is It Serendipity or Is It Supernatural?(Photo by Kirsty Griffin/Netflix)Another element the show may explore in a possible second season — Netflix has yet to confirm another is on the way — is the part serendipity seems to play in the story. Consider the way Jep (Nonso Anozie) and Singh had that conversation in an elevator which eventually leads to him accepting Gus ten years later or the way Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) and Wendy relate to one another. Then there s the big one: the way the fickle hand of fate has seemingly led all of the characters in the direction of Essex County for what comes next. When asked if it is all coincidence or if some force is at work behind the scenes, Mickle simply raised an eyebrow. James Brolin is behind the whole thing, Lemire joked.Although, that joke definitely leads to one possible answer. From the eight episodes so far, we ve heard Brolin s narrator refer to himself in the first person, have intimate knowledge of the characters pasts, and bind their scenes together thematically before any of them besides Aimee walked near the Zoo. He could be some supernatural force. He could also be Gus in the far future writing all of this down in the storybook style of his father, but if Lemire feels comfortable enough to joke about the narrator s place in the story at this point, we ll assume his real role in the story is far more surprising. Then there is also a supernatural angle if viewers want it: Gus s hallucinatory dream in the field of flowers which seems to foretell his meeting with Abbot. The mention of it led Mickle to raise his eyebrow again and say, Gus is tapped into whatever Gus is tapped into, I guess. [In] a circular, very Twin Peaksian way, Lemire added. You could ask the same question about Jeff s comic books, Schwartz said. Indeed, comic book Gus has many more dreams than his TV counterpart by the time he first meets Singh — and all without the aid of the flowers growing over the dead. All of them contain at least a drop of prophecy, although we can go back to Lemire invoking Twin Peaks and the way that show always kept a little deniability in the mysticism on display. At least until the third season, anyway. But it is definitely something to keep on the board should Sweet Tooth get its second season.
Midsommar, Ari Aster s sun-drenched – and presumably blood-soaked – followup to Hereditary, is one of the most anticipated and mystery-shrouded horror releases of the year. What we know: The movie is about a group of friends who go to a festival in Sweden where s t gets very real. What we don t know: Pretty much everything else. Rotten Tomatoes got the chance to peel back some of that mystery recently in an exclusive interview with Aster and co-stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor ahead of the first screenings of the movie. Here, Aster, Pugh, and Reynor talk about the folkloric inspirations behind the movie, the breakup story at its heart, and the grueling shoot that resulted in what is apparently one terrifying, weird, and explosive ride. The trio offered one key piece of advice for moviegoers heading to theaters to see Midsommar: Watch the walls. Midsommar is in theaters July 3.Like this? ag体育在线 solved.Hoffa’s connections to organized crime began in the 1930s when he was a union activist in New York, and it was here that the young Hoffa first gained an audience with mafia dons Russell Bufalino and Angelo Bruno. After years of moving up in the Teamsters Union, all while making shady backdoor deals with the East Coast mafia, Hoffa became president of the Teamsters from 1957 until 1971 and turned it into one of the most powerful in the world. But, on July 30, 1975, just four years after stepping down as Teamsters president, Hoffa vanished without a trace. The unsolved disappearance has led to countless theories of what happened, including ones that posit Hoffa was either buried underneath Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands, compacted in a car and sold as scrap metal and shipped to Japan, or buried under a suburban Detroit driveway. The one commonality is that they all agree the mafia had him taken out.The teaser trailer released today seems to have higher ambitions than just exploring Hoffa s rise, fall, and presumed death, however. With frequent allusions to John F. Kennedy and the role of big business and the government, it seems like The Irishman will tackle the connections between a tangled web of organized crime, crooked unions, and American politics in the 20th century. The Cast and Crew(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)We first got a glimpse of the type of talent in this movie in the initial teaser (even though it was only their names), but now we finally get to see some of the greatest actors in film history and one of the most beloved and revered directors of all time doing their thing. We all know the work Scorsese, De Niro, Keitel, and Pesci have done together, including Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Casino, but adding Pacino to that crew is the pistachios on the cannoli. In the upcoming film, Pacino plays Union leader Hoffa and De Niro plays his friend and alleged killer Sheeran, while Keitel and Pesci play bosses of rival East Coast crime families. But the talent doesn’t stop there, as The Irishman’s roster is both top heavy and deep. In addition to these heavy hitters, the film will also feature Oscar winner Anna Paquin, two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, two-time Emmy nominee Jesse Plemons, and Emmy-winner Ray Romano. In case you weren’t keeping count, that cast features actors who have been nominated for a combined 19 Oscars, 35 Golden Globes, and 27 Emmys, and have collectively taken home five Oscars, five Golden Globes, and seven Emmys. And that’s just in front of the camera.Between Scorsese, screenwriter Steven Zaillian, editor Thelma Shoonmaker, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, the talent behind the camera has combined for 25 Academy Award noms and four wins. So, with all that talent and excitement, how has it taken so long for this film to get made? The Journey(Photo by Andrew Cooper/Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)This film has been a passion project for director Martin Scorsese for years, with news coming about the potential film as far back as 2008. (That same article refers to Scorsese s adaptation of Shutter Island as an upcoming release, just to give a sense of how long ago 2008 was.)Since then, the film has floundered in development hell, and Scorsese moved on to directing other long-gestating passion projects like Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street, and 2016’s Silence. But Scorsese kept coming back to the story of the most famous mob hit in history, and finally, in 2017, Paramount and Fábrica de Cine came together to co-finance the film and aim for a 2019 release. So how did it end up on Netflix, you ask?The BudgetYes, like all things, it comes down to cold, hard cash.Initially targeted for a 0 million budget, the movie s cost soon ballooned to nearly 0,000,000 after the production opted to use a CGI de-aging technique to make De Niro, Pacino, and co. appear younger while playing the younger versions of their characters.Because of this price tag (and perhaps still feeling the burn left by Silence, which cost upwards of million and took in less than million at the box office), Fábrica de Cine and Paramount decided to back out of the project less than a year after agreeing to fund it.Fábrica de Cine producer Gaston Pavlovich explained this difficult decision, saying We quickly realized that Marty and De Niro really thought that the aging process was going to be a very important aspect of this film. The traditional model was not going to work with this new vision of the project [we could not] risk that amount [of money] when all our data was telling us that it was not going to come back. Thankfully, Netflix stepped in, and the importance is not lost on Scorsese, who recently said, “People such as Netflix are taking risks. The Irishman is a risky film. No one else wanted to fund the pic for five to seven years. And of course we’re all getting older. Netflix took the risk.”(Photo by Netflix)Even so, the CGI de-aging comes with both budgetary and cinematic concerns. Previously used on Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button, Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy, and Robert Downey Jr. in Captain America: Civil War, the de-aging technology has advanced in recent years to appear more natural, but still remains costly. So costly, in fact, that until Samuel L. Jackson (and, perhaps less noticeably, Clark Gregg) was made to look 25 years younger in the recent Captain Marvel, it had only been used sparingly.Editor Thelma Schoonmaker called it a “risk,” saying, “We’re youthifying the actors in the first half of the movie. And then the second half of the movie they play their own age. So that’s a big risk. We’re having that done by Industrial Light and Magic Island, ILM. That’s a big risk.”While it might be cool to see young Pacino, young De Niro, young Pesci, and young Keitel in the same scene, it could also venture too close to the uncanny valley and take the viewers out of the film.Schoonmaker has also expressed some trepidation over how the public is going to view seeing a 30-year-old Pacino, De Niro, et al. in a 2019 movie: “I haven’t gotten a whole scene where they’re young, and what I’m going to have to see, and what Marty’s going to have to see, is ‘How is it affecting the rest of the movie, when you see them young?’” In that same interview, the eminent editor said that, of the few people they’ve screened the movie for, “nobody minds. Nobody minds watching them play young, because they’re gripped.”While we don t see too much of the de-aged film legends in the teaser trailer, what we do see looks pretty good. On first impressions, the one shot of a young De Niro talking on the phone might be a little distracting, but this is just the first glimpse, so that s a given. With what is sure to be stellar directing from Scorsese and brilliant acting from some silver screen legends, audiences likely won t even notice that there s a 40-something Robert De Niro in a 2019 movie. The Release(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As one of Netflix s main prestige productions for 2019, it was always expected that The Irishman would be released at the heart of awards season, and now we have confirmation. It was recently announced that The Irishman will celebrate its world premiere as the Opening Night film for the 2019 New York Film Festival on September 27. Most likely, the film will be available for the general public a few weeks later in theaters and on your couch.Previously, Scorsese has expressed his disdain for movie-watching on small screens, saying that when he was growing up, films “had to be shown in certain ways — people went to a movie, it wasn’t something you could choose or pick up, or walk out of the room. You actually made a commitment. It was a different experience.” He continued, “the ideal would be to see cinema in its proper context… It’s a problem of pure concentration.”Robert de Niro agrees, saying at a recent film festival, Movies have to be shown on a big screen.  It appears Netflix also shares this sentiment, as the teaser trailer announces that the film will be shown in select theaters. Unfortunately, we still don’t really know when exactly The Irishman will be released. But we now know that it will have a splashy premiere at a prestigious film festival at the end of September, and will be shown in theaters and on the streaming service sometime this Fall. The Irishman  is currently set to release in select theaters an on Netflix during the Fall of 2019.

Beyond your Parasites and Jokers, Greta Gerwig s Little Women made it in, though without a nod in the Best Directing category; comedies, usually ignored, actually made a showing with Jojo Rabbit and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; and Netflix continues to squeeze the major studios with The Irishman and Marriage Story. But which is the best of the Oscar-nominated bunch, according to critics? The Academy has opted to nominate nine 2019 films that depict the best the year had to offer, and now we ve ranked them all by Tomatometer! So were we. This was Toy Story 4’s award to lose: The Certified Fresh Pixar sequel is considered a lock for the Oscar in the category, and was a huge smash with audiences and critics. But it was the underseen Missing Link, the stop-motion Big Foot movie from Kubo and the Two Strings and Coraline studio Laika, that won the Golden Globe and made this year’s animation races a touch more exciting moving forward.Tom Hanks Doesn t Usually Get This Emotional, He SwearsTom Hanks proved why he’s the most liked person in Hollywood (the world?), delivering one of the night’s most moving speeches while receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award from Charlize Theron for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Hanks started things off emotionally, struggling to speak as he shouted out his wife and five kids, then delivered some laughs (to Scorsese: “Boy, let’s see the outtakes from that movie, by the way”), before closing with a few more almost-tears (“I have checked the gate”). “I swear to God I’m not nearly this emotional at home,” he said at one point. We’re glad he let himself go this time.President Barack Obama Is on Fleabag s Naughty ListIn her acceptance speech for Fleabag’s win for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, series creator Waller-Bridge reminded everyone that she’s as much of a fan of President Barack Obama as he is of her show.“Personally, I’d like to also thank Obama for putting us on his list,” Waller-Bridge said, referring to the president s end-of-the year list. “And as some of you may know, he’s always been on mine. So was much of the room, who were likely expecting Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon-ho, or the man Mendes himself said in his speech stands above all others, Martin Scorsese, to take the prize. Mendes’ win for Best Director was only the beginning of a surprisingly good night for his WWI drama. The movie would go on to win for Best Motion Picture – Drama, too, beating out The Irishman and Marriage Story. Opening wide in theaters next week, a strong showing at the Box Office could put the film in the frontrunner seat for Best Picture at the Oscars. And Olivia Got A Little Boozy, AgainAfter confessing she got bladdered at last year s Oscars, Olivia Colman confessed – on stage – she was a bit boozy tonight when she won her award for Best Performance By An Actress In a Television Series – Drama for The Crown. We thank her for the helpful reminder – on behalf of a number of presenters and recipients this evening – the booze was flowing in the ballroom. Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? Ready for another great Bill Murray performance? Because if early reviews are anything to go by, he delivers just that in writer-director Sofia Coppola s new dramedy, On the Rocks. In the film – which will screen in select theaters October 2 before releasing to Apple TV+ – Murray is Felix, the sometime-absent playboy father to Rashida Jones Laura, who suspects her husband of having an affair and enlists dad to help her get to the bottom of things.Critics so far are lauding the film from A24 and Apple Original Films as a charmer, with rich character work, plenty of wit, and a loving look at a New York City that will make fans of the Big Apple nostalgic for the pre-pandemic days of cocktail bars and curbside connection. In this exclusive clip, though, we re off the streets and inside for an intimate moment between Felix and his grandkids, in which he reveals that he might be a bit lax with the rules when he s playing sitter. On the Rocks is in select theaters October 2, 2020, and available to stream on Apple TV+ from October 23.On an Apple device? ag体育在线 On November 27th, 1985, audiences flocked to theaters to root for perennial underdog boxer Rocky Balboa yet again in Rocky IV, the third installment in the successful franchise to be both written and directed by its star, Sylvester Stallone. In the film, Rocky faces off against Russian boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a square-jawed, granite-fisted giant who kills Rocky’s best friend (and former rival) Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) during an ill-fated exhibition match. Stallone clearly drew inspiration for the film from another legendary fight of the 20th century: In 1938, American boxer Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis faced German boxing champ Max Schmeling in a rematch heard around the world, as 70,000 screaming fans at New York’s Yankee Stadium watched Louis redeem an earlier loss to Schmeling and secure a victory not just for himself, but for American democracy. Swap out the Nazi-era Germans for Cold War Russians and add a tragic death for dramatic effect, and that basic outline should sound pretty familiar. Some might argue that Rocky IV s jingoistic leanings and adherence to music-driven montages make it one of the lesser entries in the franchise. But after three films that saw Rocky evolve from a likable, leg-breaking enforcer to a world heavyweight boxing champ, this sequel earns its right to strip back its plot and simply focus on Rocky duking it out with a Russian titan for 15 rounds. Though it failed to strike a chord with critics, Rocky IV was a blockbuster smash that pulled in 2 million at the domestic box office (adjusted for inflation), and it remains a culturally relevant fan favorite 35 years after its release. Here s why it still resonates with fans so much more than any of the other sequels.Apollo Creed s Brutal and Surprising Death Still HurtsThough the MGM accountants tallying the box office totals and home video sales most likely didn t mind, Stallone regrets killing off Apollo Creed to fuel Rocky IV s revenge narrative, and it s not hard to see why. Rocky and Apollo had endured so much punishment by 1985 that audiences had come to accept their skulls were essentially concussion-proof, so Apollo s death at the hands of Ivan Drago was shocking. Sure, even those who didn’t watch the incredibly spoilery movie trailer could have guessed that the overly confident Apollo was going to lose to Drago, thereby setting up a rematch. But it’s hard to believe that any popcorn-munching audience expected to see Rocky cradling a dead Apollo in his arms while a murderous Russian dispassionately quips, If he dies, he dies. Part of what makes the death so cruel is that it was only supposed to be an exhibition match, and Apollo treats it as such. He dances his way through an elaborately staged entrance, complete with James Brown himself singing Living in America. When the fight finally starts, he prances around the ring, cheerful as ever, taunting Drago and throwing ineffectual jabs. Faster than you can say “Yo, Adrian,” Drago retaliates, and the atmosphere changes immediately as he batters Apollo from one corner of the ring to the next. When Apollo realizes what s happening, his pride gets the better of him, and he insists Rocky not stop the fight no matter what what follows still makes us scream at the screen 35 years later.Stallone directed this scene expertly, as the flashy entrance and cocksure antics give way to the shocking visual of Rocky’s white pullover stained red with Apollo s blood. Some argue that using Apollo’s death as Rocky s motivation is lazy, but it’s hard to debate how effective the shock was and how simply it sets up the iconic fight. The Training Montages Are LegendaryWhat makes Rocky IV a unique entry into the franchise is the 29 minutes of montage action, featured in eight separate scenes dispersed throughout the film. Some of them simply catch the viewer up on previous Rocky films, while others showcase the original songs by James Brown, Survivor, and John Caffer that Stallone commissioned for the film. The musical montages in particular were wise business decisions, as the soundtrack sold over a million copies and hit number 10 on the Billboard Top 200 list. The most iconic, perhaps greatest-ever montage happens after Rocky travels to Russia and begins a rustic training regimen that includes carrying logs, chopping down trees, and helping locals when their sleigh overturns in waist-high snow. His back-to-basics training, fueled by Survivor’s “Hearts on Fire,” is in stark contrast to that of Drago, whose routine sees him attached to heart monitors, running in cavernous halls, and pummeling things so hard they make Dwayne Johnson s punches in Hobbs and Shaw seem like love taps. No, really: in Hobbs and Shaw, Johnson s Luke Hobbs “only” punches with a force of 1235 psi (lbs. of pressure per square inch), but in Rocky IV, Drago hits register at 2150 psi (real-world boxers only average 1200-1700 psi). In other words, don t sit in the front row of a Drago fight unless you want to feel the shockwave in your own ribs every time he lands a blow. Most importantly, though, the Rocky vs. Drago montage recalls the original 1976 film, which depicts Stallone punching slabs of meat, downing raw eggs, and jogging up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Both are gritty, back-to-basics affairs that serve their purpose with maximum efficiency, and they re awesome to watch.Ivan Drago Is A Villain for the AgesThanks to a spiky flat top and a chiseled, glycerin-soaked 6 5 physique, Dolph Lundgren s Ivan Drago is one of cinema’s most recognizable characters, and for good reason. Lundgren s imposing physical presence would later lead to roles as a bionic supersoldier (Universal Soldier), a Marvel badass (The Punisher), He-Man (Masters of the Universe), and a guy who flips cars like they’re pancakes (Showdown in Little Tokyo). He also happens to be a Fulbright Scholar with a master’s degree in chemical engineering and a black belt in Kyokushin Karate. The one thing the Swedish-born actor realized he didn t possess was the same kind of electric charisma that prior Rocky antagonists played by Carl Weathers, Hulk Hogan, and Mr. T flaunted effortlessly. So Lundgren worked with Stallone to capitalize on his stoic nature and subtle tics, crafting a machine-like uber-villain who might just have a little more lurking below the surface. Some critics like Roger Ebert called him “more of a James Bond villain than a Rocky-style character,” which isn t exactly wrong Richard Kiel s Jaws comes to mind but by focusing on Lundgren’s physical prowess and limiting his dialogue to a few memorable quotes, Stallone managed to get himself a nice little stew going. Believe it or not, Lundgren only delivered nine lines in the entire film, but with winners like I must break you, You will lose, and If he dies, he dies now entrenched in the pop culture vernacular, you d have to admit he made them count. The Final Fight Manages to Feel FreshAfter two epic Apollo Creed fights and two short but thrilling brawls with Clubber Lang that saw Rocky going 2-for-4 and avenging losses to both fighters, audiences probably didn’t want to see the same formula repeated again. In the first two films, Apollo was either too cocky (and still won) or tired himself out chasing a knockout (and lost, though he could have won easily). After destroying  Rocky easily in the third film, Clubber lost the second fight because Rocky got into his head, which resulted in a knockout after Rocky hit him so hard it sounded like a jet took off in the arena. What makes the fight between Rocky and Drago unique is the way Rocky makes Drago realize he’s a mortal. Drago has never faced a real challenge; his training partners seem like KO fodder, and Apollo clearly didn’t take him seriously. Sure, Drago’s power is near superhuman, and even when he misses, the air is enough to push Rocky back. But once Rocky opens up a cut on his face, and the crowd starts turning against him, he s caught off guard, seemingly unprepared for any scenario in which he isn t a dominating force. Rocky shatters Drago s confidence and his nerves by standing toe-to-toe with him and forcing him to acknowledge and respect his iron will. The cherry on top is the catharsis of seeing Drago destroyed. In Rocky and Rocky II,  Apollo was supremely charismatic, and you weren’t exactly rooting against him. In Rocky III, Clubber Lang is also magnetic and larger than life, and aside from his trash talk, he was just an excellent boxer Rocky had to overcome. Drago, however, killed Apollo, showed no remorse, trained on steroids, and represented America s greatest threat during a tense period of the Cold War. When Rocky finally turns the tide of the fight and unleashes the decisive flurry on Drago, it s thrilling and satisfying in a way that none of the franchise s previous climactic bouts have been.Fun side note: In order to make the action more believable, Stallone and Lundgren actually punched each other during the fight, and at one point, Stallone insisted Lundgren cut loose as hard as you can. Stallone ended up in the ICU for four days. Its Influence Continues TodayWith an average of 89% on the Tomatometer and close to 0 million at the worldwide box office, Creed and Creed 2 reinvigorated the Rocky franchise, focusing on the rise of Adonis (Donnie) Creed (Michael B. Jordan) as a champion boxer under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa. The presence of Ivan Drago can be felt throughout the two films, as Adonis attempts to fight in the sport that killed his father and ultimately faces a Russian showdown of his own. In a clever callback to Rocky IV, Creed 2 specifically focuses on the battles between Donnie and Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), the son of Ivan. Their first fight sees Donnie overwhelmed (like his father in Rocky IV), and the second meeting plays out like the Rocky/Ivan fight, as Viktor becomes dismayed that he can’t knock out Donnie and loses when Ivan throws in the towel to save his son from further punishment. The two Creed films owe a lot to the legacy of Rocky IV, introducing a new generation of fans to Ivan Drago.Even outside of the franchise, the wonderful College Humor 30 for 30 parody has racked up millions of views, and the legend of Lundgren sending Stallone to the hospital after a Swedish super punch has mad the rounds. Recently, Stallone announced he was working on a Rocky IV director’s cut; the news started trending on social media and the controversy surrounding the decision to remove the weird robot subplot has gotten a lot of press. People love Rocky IV, and that’s why 35 years later, it still inspires passionate discussion and remains one of the most popular sports films ever made.Rocky IV was released in theaters on November 27, 1985.Thumbnail image by (c)United Artists courtesy Everett CollectionOn an Apple device?
