Honestly, it s not that hard to see why. Both shows originated as video games Digimon started out as Tamagotchi-like virtual pets and Pokémon was a series of role-playing games before expanding to trading cards, TV shows, and movies.While Pokémon grew to become a multimedia juggernaut that has churned out TV seasons non-stop since 1997 and produced over 20 feature films, Digimon has quietly but steadily remained in its shadow since it premiered in 1999. But with the recent release of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and with the franchise s first film, Digimon: The Movie, celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, it s about time we take out our Digivice, become champions of the Digital World, and explore why Digimon is the superior 90s franchise about young kids who befriend small fighting monsters.It Was Appointment TV(Photo by FOX)By the late 90s, we were already entering the era of prestige TV, as the arrival of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing, with a stronger focus on serialized narratives, forced people to tune in every week or risk missing important plot points. Though children s television at the time was mostly episodic, Digimon marked a groundbreaking development for many kids of the era who discovered that they too had to watch every episode if they wanted to follow along with the story.Many episodes ended on cliffhangers, characters experienced genuine story arcs, and smaller events and characters were frequently referenced later. Sometimes, major characters would be separated from each other for weeks at a time, and side characters would suddenly become important. This made for a more challenging but rewarding experience that treated children like a serious TV-viewing audience. More than anything, the show trusted its young viewers to keep up with its narrative week by week, so that by the time the epic finale came each season, the anticipation for it had been building for months.It Tackled Mature Subjects(Photo by FOX)Digimon is very much a Saturday morning cartoon-style show aimed at kids, but it got away with a surprising amount of depth. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Digimon featured character development that would unfold over the course of each season. The second season spent a lot of time telling the story of the self-proclaimed Digimon Emperor, who is consumed by darkness and begins to take over the Digital World before atoning for his sins in a redemption arc that spans several episodes.The show also explored themes that were relatable to kids but seldom seen in kids cartoons, like exploring the effects of a divorce on a family, the pressure of living up to one s family s expectations, or the grief of losing a loved one. In the third season, a character named Jeri is even thrown into a weeks-long depression after the death of a Digimon friend. Indeed, Digimon fully acknowledged that its titular creatures are dangerous beings, and danger lurks behind every corner, sometimes with devastating results. The show was upbeat and action-packed for the most part, but it was never afraid to pull at your heartstrings, either.Its Stakes Were Incredibly High(Photo by FOX)Digimon isn t about collecting all the monsters, or about fighting a new villain each week; it s about kids on a mission to literally save the world. No offense to Jessie and James of Pokémon s Team Rocket, but they aren t the most competent villains out there. Meanwhile, the Digital World of Digimon is home to some seriously monstrous villains capable of ruthless evil. Each season hinges on world-ending stakes that require the kids to work against all odds with the help of a friend or two to win the day. In most of the seasons (as well as the recent movie and new reboot), the Digital World even leaks into the real world, threatening to destroy everything.Such high stakes have meant that the series has lost more than a few of its characters. This may be a children s show, but Digimon has never been afraid to kill off beloved heroes in heartbreaking ways we still haven t healed from the devastating loss of Wizardmon in the original series. Plenty of friends and allies have met their demise over the course of the show, so much so that one character held a funeral for lost friends during the first season. But sure, remind me how sad it was when Ash said goodbye to Butterfree — which wasn t even permanent.The Movie Is Bonkers and Has a Fantastic, Totally 90s Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Speaking of high stakes, the plot of Digimon: The Movie is completely nuts. The main characters (still 10 years old, by the way) literally have to prevent a nuclear warhead from exploding over Tokyo after a virus-infected Digimon takes over the U.S. nuclear arsenal specifically to target a couple of kids. It takes a while for the kids to bring the fight to the bad guy, though, because they also have to battle… slow internet connections and the unreliable email.Considering the movie was cobbled together from three short films and packaged for release outside of Japan, it s a wonder the story makes any sense at all. It s also worth noting that two of those three short films were the early efforts of acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, who would go on to make films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Mirai.But the greatest thing about Digimon: The Movie isn t its ludicrous story, but its bizarre yet surprisingly solid soundtrack. Just as Pokémon: The First Movie included songs by Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, the producers of Digimon went all out to make their movie the most 90s event ever. In addition to the show s theme song, which reflects a time when every anime show was marketed to American audiences with hip hop, the film s pop soundtrack includes everything from Fatboy Slim, Barenaked Ladies sexually-charged One Week, and a fantastic cover of Kids in America by Len to a pre-Shrek All Star by the one and only Smash Mouth to close out the film. That s right, pre-Shrek. Meme or not, that s hard to top.It Knew How to End(Photo by Toei Animation)Franchises eventually change, whether they re Star Wars, Marvel, or Toy Story, but Pokémon, despite an occasional change of scenery, has otherwise remained pretty much the same, plot- and character-wise. Digimon, on the other hand, always knew its audience was eventually going to grow up, so it grew up with them. 2015 saw the release of Digimon Tri, a series of movies that picked up 5 years after the end of the original show, with the characters now in high-school. Then, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came out earlier this year and, like Toy Story 3 did for a little while, actually dared to say goodbye to the franchise with a story that signals from the get-go that it will be Agumon and Tai s final adventure.Digimon s audience came of age with the franchise because Digimon is a coming-of-age story. It recognized its place in the audience s life and has grown to reflect the same changes its audience has experienced. Digimon knows some things from our childhood will inevitably have to be left behind. Though the series was ultimately rebooted earlier this year, Last Evolution Kizuna puts a bittersweet bow on 20 years of adventures that began with Digimon Adventure and Digimon: The Movie, which is an example that more franchises honestly should follow.Digimon: The Movie was released in theaters on October 6, 2000.On an Apple device? Whether it s the hit Fallout video game franchise or horror films like The Return of the Living Dead and Robert Rodriguez s Grindhouse installment, Planet Terror, the trope of a chemical disaster and the monsters it births into the world is a subgenre that has kept audiences entertained for decades.Those examples are far enough removed from the real world, giving viewers an escapist perspective filled with zombified humans and mutated beasts to battle. It s an easier pill to swallow when such a catastrophic event is flooded with a plethora of supernatural goodies.Then there s HBO s Chernobyl.Creator Craig Mazin s (The Hangover Part II, Identity Thief) bleak five-part mini-series does away with the expected horror tropes audiences have become familiar with and, instead, delivers an up-close, completely terrifying, and grotesquely personal look at Ukraine s infamous 1986 power plant explosion — including the government cover-up and devastating calamity that followed.Here, no undead hordes or mutant hounds can be found shambling about the vacated Soviet roads. Instead, the big bad of the historical drama is largely unseen. It s everywhere and nowhere at the same time, only making itself known to unsuspecting passersby once it s too late. The agonizing visuals of skin melting off living innocent bodies is just the tip of the aesthetic iceberg here, and really nails home the extent of the damage caused.The tons of toxic poison seen billowing out of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant s exposed roof is the ominous villain here. The unseen monster, followed by the even more damaging accomplice of the lies the government tells to save face, come together in a way so catastrophic, so heartwrenching, and so unbelievable that we can t help but label Chernobyl as the scariest thing we ve seen on TV in years — and maybe even ever.It s unsurprising then, that critical praise collected along the way had given the series Certified Fresh status with an impressive 96% on the Tomatometer with 47 reviews.SPOILER ALERT: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS DETAILS ABOUT THE FIRST THREE EPISODES OF CHERNOBYL. STOP HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED.(Photo by HBO)In the closing moments of episode 2, titled Please Remain Calm, three brave men, fully outfitted in protective suits and gas masks, wade through the flooded tunnels beneath the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. With the reactor core exploded and exposed, pouring tons upon tons of nuclear materials into the air, these men — dubbed by history as The Suicide Squad — ventured into the bowels of the building to open the pipes in order to drain the water (which, upon hitting the open core, would allegedly create lava that would drain into Europe s main water source). Their bravery stopped a full-blown meltdown from occurring.It s a horrifying moment and one that is fully brought to claustrophobic life through nothing more than dim lighting, the men s belabored breathing, and their radiation detectors constant ticking sound: an ominous reminder of just how embedded in the chaos they really are. The scene is so stifling that we d be hard-pressed not to mention our own shortness of breath upon viewing the episode.While we ve seen instances of such events play out in big-budget action films, it s worth noting here that before 1986 the world had rarely faced a catastrophe like this, one whose impact on humanity and mother nature would reverberate on such a mind-boggling scale. And that detail brings with it an even more baffling truth: No one knew how to fix it.Soviet nuclear physicist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) and Soviet Minister of Energy Boris Scherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) are brought in to investigate and ultimately clean up the mess, rightfully carrying the story as the chemicals and news of the accident spread. It really is a rousing spectacle when you take a step back and view the miniseries from afar.The addition of Emily Watson s Ulana Khomyuk — who Mazin said is a fictional character, created as an amalgamation of the nuclear scientists called in to fix things — adds an insightful layer to the world-building of Chernobyl. It was five years before the Soviet Union crumbled, meaning in 1980s Russia women were rarely seen in such scientific roles. The antiquated nature of the gender roles portrayed here gives clarity to a society and time we Americans only know passing information about. It s probably worth noting that the Chernobyl accident happened the same year the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded and the news of that tragic instance quickly dissipated.

And that’s exactly what we get from the movie’s trailer: a pastiche of late- 60s L.A. local color and trippy antics, but virtually no Manson presence, save for one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of a crookedly smiling Charles Manson stepping out of a car.Tarantino said some time ago that he was going to call it quits after making 10 films. Is this really his penultimate film, his almost-swan song? Stay tuned…It Will Premiere at Cannes; Tarantino Has not left the editing room in four months After a game of will-they-or-won t-they, it s been confirmed that the Tarantino movie will play in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is a late addition to the festival, and its inclusion is auspicious: It s been 25 years since Tarantino first came to Cannes with Pulp Fiction, for which he won the Palm d or. Cannes Film Festival General Delegate Thierry Frémaux said in a statement, We were afraid the film would not be ready, as it wouldn’t be released until late July, but Quentin Tarantino, who has not left the editing room in four months, is a real, loyal and punctual child of Cannes. Like for Inglourious Basterds, he’ll definitely be there – 25 years after the Palme d’or for Pulp Fiction – with a finished film screened in 35mm and his cast in tow (Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt). His film is a love letter to the Hollywood of his childhood, a rock music tour of 1969, and an ode to cinema as a whole. Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor Sharon Tate. Tate, an actress who was married to the director Roman Polanski (and eight months pregnant with their first child at the time), was murdered, along with three of her friends, by the Manson Family on August 8, 1969. Just how the shocking crime will impact the two protagonists’ story – if at all – has been a closely guarded secret. But Tarantino has maintained that the film is about 1969, not the infamous Manson slayings.Structurally, Once Upon A Time is said to be separated into thematic chapters along the lines of Pulp Fiction. Last year, Ari Aster arrived on the scene with one of the most talked about feature debuts in years. He’s already back with a second movie, and apparently Hereditary was no fluke. Aster’s Midsommar (2019) 83% screened confidently on Tuesday night, without any kind of review embargo, and the gamble is paying off given the first critical reactions to the sophomore effort.Comparisons to Aster’s introductory work are inevitable, as much as they are to other “horror” films of its kind, but the initial reviews for Midsommar highlight its unique terror and humor and a lead performance from Florence Pugh that s potentially as praiseworthy as Toni Collette’s in Hereditary. To no one’s surprise, Frozen II led the Thanksgiving holiday with a five-day haul of 6.3 million, with .3 million of that coming over the weekend. That is the eighth-best second weekend of all time, wedged between Disney’s 2017 Beauty and the Beast (.4 million) and, well, Disney’s Incredibles 2 (.34 million). Overall, the film has grossed 7.6 million in 10 days, which is the 15th-best ever for 10 days, between Captain America: Civil War (5.96 million) and The Dark Knight Rises (7.11 million). It is the 25th film to have grossed over 0 million in its first 10 days of release. Only three of those films (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Furious 7, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) failed to reach 0 million total. Amongst the 12 other films to have million-plus second weekends, only one of them (Avengers: Age of Ultron) failed to reach 0 million total. However, only two of those movies opened in the holiday season (Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avatar). Frozen II has already amassed another 1 million worldwide for a total of 8 million as it marches to become another billion grosser for Disney.Fresh Surprise: Knives Out Shows Original Films Can Still Murder At the Box Office It wasn t a total surprise for us at RT – we had placed it in the top 5 holiday earners in our winter box office preview – but Rian Johnson’s Knives Out surpassed all tracking service expectations by earning .7 million since opening Wednesday. The .7 million it earned over the weekend puts it amongst the top 20 Thanksgiving holiday weekends ever – and it is just the fifth film not rated “G” or “PG” to be on that list. Some 61 films have opened in November and grossed over million in their first five days; only four (Pokemon: The First Movie, Dumb and Dumber To, The Muppets, and Unbreakable) failed to reach at least 0 million total. That means Knives Out could join Hustlers, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Us as the only films not based on a previous film or property to reach that milestone in 2019.The Top 10 and Beyond: Queen and Slim Gets a Solid Start, Word-of-Mouth Boosts Beautiful Day(Photo by © Universal)It was back and forth over the holiday for third place, but James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari won the race with .22 million over the weekend and .99 million for the five days. No film opening in November to have grossed at least million in 17 days has failed to reach 0 million. Ford v Ferrari currently stands at million, but its magic number is still going to be around 0 million globally to find its way into profit. With just over 3 million internationally, it is still less than 60% of the way there.Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood got the word-of-mouth bump over the holiday we were expecting. It is now outpacing Roland Emmerich’s Midway, which just passed the million mark this weekend. Gothika, Starship Troopers, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms are the only November films to have million after 10 days and not finish with at least million. Midway is looking to join that list given its third weekend (.95 million) was less than what those three films earned in their third weekend. Meanwhile, the Mr. Rogers film, which stands at just over million to date, had a better second weekend (.8 million) than any live-action film in November to have million or less by day 10 of wide release (aside from Jingle All the Way). This suggests that a final gross over million is still very possible for the million-budgeted film.The other newbie of the week was Melina Matsoukas’s Certified Fresh Queen Slim, which grossed .7 million over the weekend and .8 million over the full holiday. That is 0,000 more than what Widows had last year in its first five days before ultimately finishing with million. Last week’s cop thriller, 21 Bridges, is up to just .45 million after 10 days, which puts it in After the Sunset/Delivery Man territory. Its second weekend (.82 million) was about million less than the Vince Vaughn comedy and 21 Bridges may be up at around just - million when it leaves theaters. Finally, Todd Phillips’ Joker spent its eighth straight week in the top 10. It has passed 0 million domestic, .048 billion worldwide, and is Warner Bros. fourth-highest grossing film of all time. The only major new release was The Possession of Hannah Grace, which opened in seventh place with .4 million. Ralph Breaks the Internet was again on top with .56 million, passing the 0 million mark. The Grinch moved up to second with .92 million, enough to pass the 0 million line. Creed II fell back to third with .63 million and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald had the steepest fall in the top 10 (61.3%) to .36 million. The top 10 films grossed a total of 6.19 million and averaged 61.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.98 million over the weekend and averaged 67.3% with critics.On the Vine: A Balloon Adventure and an Acclaimed Romance Set to Light Up Indie Box OfficeThe weekend after Thanksgiving is usually a dead zone for new releases and indeed only one film is going wide and that is the oft-delayed animated film from STX, Playmobil: The Movie. The million production was moved from January to April to August and then into December. It has grossed just .4 million in international waters to date, and may have trouble matching that here. In limited release, try to catch The Aeronauts on the biggest screen possible as it is not often you get a chance for a hot air balloon adventure with Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne – especially one that s Certified fesh at 84% on the Tomatometer to date. Even more acclaimed is the 98%-rated Portrait of a Lady On Fire. No one has suffered as much: she’s lost, what, all of her kids; her glorious long locks; her dad; her lover/brother/Hand; and been paraded through the streets totally naked (shame!). And she arguably pulled off one of Thrones’ most stunning strategic moves in the destruction of the great Sept of Baelor. Sure, you can admire all those fresh-faced and ambitious kids in the North, forming unlikely alliances and proving themselves in battle as they seek to usurp her, but sometimes staying in power is harder than taking power. For holding on so tightly – and never dropping a drop of red while doing so – Cersei deserves to maintain her place on her throne.Should take the Throne: Jon Snow (Kit Harington)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)We learned in season 7 that Jon has the strongest claim to the throne, given that his dad was Rhaegar Targaryen, whose marriage to his mother Lyanna Stark was legit, but he also has Thrones’ ultimate mic-drop argument: He died and came back. Who else among these would-be throne-sitters can top that? (Berric Dondarrion isn t really in the running.) Or say that they led a successful defense of The Wall against attack by the Wildlings? Or that they later forged a key alliance with those same Wildlings – an alliance that could prove key to defending everyone against the oncoming White Walker invasion? No? No one? We’re listening… As if that wasn’t enough, Jon has proved himself the bravest of Thrones’ lead contenders. Recall when he went beyond the Wall. Or when he stood, sword raised, circled by enemy forces in the Battle of the Bastards? And it’s not just cocksure bravery and resurrections that have us rooting for Jon. He’s a sharp mind, too, and one who puts ego aside to “bend the knee” for love.Should take the Throne: Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Sure, Jon’s survived the Wall, epic battles and, well, death. And Arya has been dodging swords and arrows all across the continent for several years now. But Sansa is the Stark offspring who has survived in arguably the most dangerous places in all of Westeros: under Cersei’s roof, under Littlefinger s thumb, and in Ramsay Bolton’s bed. The once-naïve wannabe princess has had to grow up very quickly over seven seasons of Thrones, and her developing understanding of how the world really works and a growing skill to move within it have led her safely and triumphantly back to Winterfell. Also, if ruling the Seven Kingdoms requires a strong ability to deal with toxic men, Sansa should be your top pick: Not only did she manage to outlive a spiteful Joffrey, she escaped the physical and mental clutches of Ramsay and Lord Petyr Baelish, before killing both in wonderfully satisfying fashion.Should take the Throne: Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)A girl has no name, perhaps, but she is a strong contender for the throne. More than any other Stark – living, at least – she has had to fight for her life, time and time again, and prove her skills in deception and combat (who else can go toe-to-toe with Brienne, as she did?). Arya’s racked up quite the lethal résumé in her journeys through Kings Landing, Braavos, Riverrun, and beyond: She can fully disguise herself, thanks to skills picked up with the Faceless Men; she’s developed a ruthlessness – sorry, Hound! – that will serve her well when ruling over a court of would-be usurpers; and she’s executed some of Thrones’ biggest moves, chief among them her delicious, crusty vengeance against the House of Frey. “They’re already here, my lord…” Chills.Should take the Throne: Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)If we re going to consider other Starks for the Iron Throne, why not also the god-like all-seeing Three-Eyed Raven? Voted Most Likely to Know About His Surprise Birthday Party among the Stark kids, Bran s childhood physical agility has given way to supernatural mental acumen now that he s in his teens. He ll foresee any and all plots against him, he can time travel to take lessons from the greatest rulers in the history of Westeros and beyond; with his all-seeing eye, he can find more dragons in the east and train them based on the methods of the best dragon riders ever; and he was a kind and sweet child and still seems so at heart. Honestly, other than his unsettlingly detached demeanor — which is far sight better (pun intended) than some of the crazies that have sat the Throne recently — Bran may actually be the very best choice to rule.Should take the Throne: The Night King(Photo by HBO)You may not think Thrones’ own Ol’ Blue Eyes has much of a claim, given that we haven’t seen so much of him over the shows’ seven seasons and that we don’t actually know too much about his motives. But when we have seen him, he has almost always outsmarted the living. Case in point: In season 7’s mammoth battle north of the Wall between Daenerys and her dragons and Jon’s forces against the White Walkers and wights, he saw an opportunity in battle to take out Viserion and then resurrected the beast as a Wall-felling ice dragon. So, he’s smart. He s strategic. And he’s patient, another key quality for a good ruler.
