2. 公平游戏环境
(Photo by Showtime)Video game adaptations are tough. For years, feature film takes on beloved games like Super Mario Bros. and FarCry have been the butt of jokes thanks to producers who take the title and little else from the source material. Even more recent, high-gloss, and faithful efforts seem to lose something in the translation. (See our guide to 47 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to Best. )But Paramount+ hopes to buck that tragic big-budget trend with a high-end series based on Microsoft’s epic game franchise Halo. As Showtime Networks co-president Gary Levine put it at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour, “Our challenge on this series was to take a video game and make it into a character drama that belongs on Showtime.” Two years later, Showtime’s corporate parent, ViacomCBS, announced the series would instead be one that belongs on its rebranded Paramount+ streaming service.Navigating the landscape from game mechanics to filmed entertainment is often as difficult as any mission series main character Master Chief confronts, but here are the details we know so far about the Paramount+ Halo series.[Updated on 2/24/21]1. It Is Based Upon a Huge Game Universe(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Beginning with 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, the Halo series charts the ongoing conflict between a spacefaring humanity in the 26th century and an alien theocracy known as the Covenant. In that first game, Master Chief John-117, a genetically enhanced Spartan supersoldier encased in advanced armor, faces off against the Covenant for control of a Halo — a ring-shaped space station/super weapon created by an ancient and extinct race the Covenant worship as gods. The game changed the perception of first-person shooters on home consoles and gave Microsoft its first huge win in that market when the game was released as a launch title for the original XBox.Sequels followed — five so far in the main series with a sixth, Halo Infinite, due out in 2021 (we hope) — and a surprising number of spin-offs. New characters appeared to play off against the stoic Master Chief and the spin-offs further developed the Halo universe by featuring more story-driven first-person shooters or switching to other game mechanics like Real Time Strategy. Books, comics, and animated series further deepened the breadth of the franchise s universe and history. The television series will attempt to “weave deeply drawn personal stories with action and adventure set within that richly imagined vision of the future.” Anchoring those stories will be Master Chief, played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber (pictured). In a 2019 interview, Levine told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters that Schreiber has “the physicality to be a Spartan, to be Master Chief. But he is [also] a great dramatic actor.” A mention of Schreiber’s comedic chops and the “twinkle in his eye” suggests Master Chief may be seen without his helmet or armor; a first for Halo should it happen. Although Levine added, “we’re not violating anything big,” so Master Chief may remain within his armor throughout the series.2. Steven Spielberg Is Involved (Sort Of)(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Since 2013, Spielberg’s Amblin Television has been involved in developing the current iteration of the Halo TV project. At that time, he was said to be on board as an executive producer, but it seems he will not take on any direct creative duties. Nonetheless, there is always the potential he will take an interest in the series, particularly as it focuses on two of his favorite topics: war and aliens.Microsoft’s 343 Industries — an entity it established to manage the Halo brand following the departure of original developer Bungie — will also produce the series, suggesting a level of direct developer control seen only with Ubisoft producing 2016 s Assassin’s Creed. That film, however, proved developer input may not lead to a great adaptation as that film only garnered a 19% on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 43%.3. Its Cast Reflects Halo’s Past And Future(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Joining Master Chief on this television journey will be Yerin Ha as Quan Ah, a new character devised specifically for the series. First announced alongside Schreiber, the character is described as a “shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.” The series will also feature Californication’s Natascha McElhone (pictured), Fargo’s Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy.McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, inventor of the Spartan super-soldiers and Cortana, the advance AI who is the key to humanity’s survival and a constant element in Master Chief’s adventures. Cortana is also the name of Microsoft’s AI assistant on its platforms; the name was, in fact, derived from Halo. At one point, McElhone was set to voice Cortana, but scheduling issues led to the character s original voice, Jen Taylor, stepping in and creating one bit of continuity with the games.Woodbine will take on the role of Soren-066, another established Halo character. He is an old friend of Master Chief’s and a privateer in conflict with the military — which means he may come into direct conflict with Azmi’s character, Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of Naval Intelligence and another character from the games who seemingly places the Halo TV series in a specific part of the franchise’s history. But, as Levine said, “you re going to get new information in our series, but we are not going to violate any of the things in the canon.”Kalu, Culzac, and Kennedy all play new characters to the Halo universe with familiar affiliations. Kalu is Spartan Vannak-134, Master Chief’s de facto deputy. Culzac is Spartan Riz-028, a “cybernetically enhanced killing machine,” and Kennedy is Spartan Kai-125, another Spartan super-soldier tasked to the mission. Actors Yerin Ha, Charlie Murphy, Olive Gray, and Danny Sapani are also part of the series in unspecified roles.”4. It Has Great Talent in the Writers’ RoomExploring the “richly imagined universe” is executive producer and showrunner Kyle Killen, creator of critically acclaimed Lone Star (83% on the Tomatometer) and the fan-favorite NBC series Awake (89% Audience Score). Both series featured protagonist who faced dual realities — literally in the case of Awake’s Micheal Britten (Jason Isaacs). Both shows also faced tough competition on broadcast television and did not last beyond their initial episode orders; nonetheless, a 10-episode cable series may turn out to be the best format for Killen as a writer and producer. And should Halo s protagonist find themselves caught between two worlds — say humanity versus the culture of The Covenant — Killen will be a great fit for the material. The Last Ship’s Steven Kane also serves as showrunner alongside Killen. His TNT series has an 83% on the Tomatometer and proved to be success on that network over the course of five seasons. Kane reportedly oversees production in Budapest while Killen supervises writing and other stateside production efforts. Also, the initial episodes will be directed by Robin Hood’s Otto Bathurst, who replaced Rupert Wyatt due to scheduling conflicts.“[He] is a marvelous director,” Levine said of Bathurst. “Unbelievably passionate about the project, and he has been leading our team beautifully.”5. This Is Not the First Attempt Adapt Halo(Photo by Vanguard Cinema)Halo nearly became a feature film in the early part of the 21st century. In 2005, 20th Century Fox and Universal picked up the project thanks in part to a script written by Annhilation’s Alex Garland. According to Garland, the story was a fairly faithful adaptation of the two Halo games available at the time. Peter Jackson was poised to produce with both Guillermo del Toro and Neill Blomkamp eyeing the director’s chair. Sadly, tough negotiations between the studios, Jackson, and producer Peter Schlessel led to the project’s collapse. After to the project’s implosion, Blomkamp said he would have used Master Chief as “the most important supporting cast member” with other characters doing “most of the emotional heavy lifting.”Since the time of the failed feature attempt, Microsoft produced two live-action webseries which were later released as films: Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall. The latter was produced by Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free and featured Luke Cage’s Mike Colter as Agent Jameson Locke, a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians.6. The Switch to Paramount+Although intended to be a Showtime original series, David Nevins, CBS Chief Creative Officer and Showtime Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, surprised reporters during a February 2021 Investor Day presentation by adding the program to the Paramount+ roster. The streaming service, a rebrand of the existing CBS All Access, intends to encompass more of ViacomCBS’s programming. According to Nevins, Halo fits right in with the sort of content the streaming service intends to highlight. “From all the early glimpses we’ve seen, it’s crystal clear that Halo is a visually stunning thrill-ride, anchored in riveting, character-driven storytelling,” he said. “With such tremendous appeal to every audience, we realized Halo had the potential to become a defining show for what will become the broadest streaming platform at ViacomCBS – the new Paramount+.” Showtime will still be involved as a producer alongside 343 Industries and Amblin.7. What s the Status? Production began in Budapest during the fall of 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to a long delay. It is currently in production again with Paramount+ setting it for an early 2022 debut. On an Apple device? 3. 激战团竞模式
Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. It all means DC fans will get a lot of content in the next 10 years.Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Batman v SupermanListen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Wonder Woman 1984Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About AquamanThe change is the latest shockwave in the often incredible story of Warner Bros.’ attempts to bring the DC Multiverse to the screen. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. (Want to see what the other camp has in store? Check out our breakdown of upcoming Marvel movies.)SEE: Most Anticipated 2021 Movies | Most Anticipated 2022 MoviesComing SoonThere is a lot that is uncertain about which DC Comics characters are coming to the big screen, who s bringing them there, and in what order — but nothing is uncertain about these first movies. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. The studio moved quickly to quash the rumors, but it now seems clear the film will exist in its own universe with a HBO Max spin-off series already in development.Black Adam(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow  huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. A behind-the-scenes reel also offered a few glimpses of Dr. Fate’s helmet and Adam’s costume.(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, so their film worlds are definitely connected. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable. In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart. How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction. The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground. How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. His appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the very nature of the Multiverse offer some glimmers of hope, however.Joker 2(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Thanks to the success of the first Joker, a follow-up was inevitable, but details remained scarce through 2020. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script. How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon. Last time McKay was asked about it, he said fans will have

(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Image)GOOOAALLL!!! Apple TV+ s feel-good comedy Ted Lasso received the 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for best comedy series. In total, between Sunday s broadcast and last week s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the Jason Sudeikis-led series about a mustachioed fish-out-of-water British football coach received 11 trophies including one for its leading man, plus supporting acting trophies for actor Brett Goldstein and actress Hannah Waddingham. That 11-trophy haul was something matched by limited series The Queen s Gambit and drama The Crown, which dominated the night in their respective categories.See what critics are saying about the 73rd Emmy AwardsCheck out the best looks from the Emmys 2021 red carpetSee the full list of winners from the 2021 Emmy AwardsDespite adhering to quarantine regulations by keeping the event to an intimate gathering in Los Angeles as well as a watch party in London (where it was 1am when the broadcast started), the Cedric the Entertainer-hosted CBS program managed to hand out 28 awards including the annual Governors Award, which this year went to actress-director and dance extraordinaire, Debbie Allen. That things went so smoothly – if at times rather dully – might actually have been the biggest surprise of them all, as most of the winners were as routine as a morning drop-off of biscuits from an overly optimistic Kansan. But there were some big bold takeaways from the night, not all of them the kind you wanna sing about 1. The Brits Rule the Night(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)It wasn t just Ted Lasso that won big at the Emmys. As mentioned, the TV Academy also raised a few pints to Netflix s monarchy drama, The Crown. The series won best drama, creator Peter Morgan won the Emmy for writing for a drama series and Jessica Hobbs took home the Emmy for best directing for a drama series. The series actors Olivia Colman, Josh O Connor, Tobias Menzies, and Gillian Anderson (who was technically born in Chicago, but is married to Morgan and spent a chunk of her childhood in London, so we ll let it slide) also received honors.Other British winners included Mare of Easttown s Kate Winslet, who received the Emmy for lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie and I May Destroy You s Michaela Coel, who received the Emmy for writing for a limited or anthology series or movie. Ewan McGregor, who is Scottish, also won the lead actor in a limited series or movie Emmy for his work in Netflix s Halston. How did the Brits celebrate? In style. Check out the Ted Lasso team performing the Roy Kent cheer below The whole Ted Lasso cast crew did the Roy Kent cheer backstage and it was pretty special #Emmys pic.twitter.com/2HNJsTuc5d Kevin Polowy (@djkevlar) September 20, 20212. Michaela Coel Implores Creators to Write the Tale That Scares You One of the biggest surprises of the night wasn t that Coel won for writing the HBO limited series I May Destroy You, but that she didn t win more awards for her work on the powerful piece about rape, assault, and survival. (The 2020 miniseries is Certified Fresh with a 98% Tomatometer). She was also nominated for directing and starring in the project, which was also nominated for best limited series or anthology.Coel s remarks upon accepting her Emmy will also not soon be forgotten. During the concise and poignant 33-odd second acceptance Coel told her fellow creatives to write the tale the scares you; that makes you feel uncertain; that is uncomfortable. I dare you. Other winners with memorable Emmy acceptance speeches included Mare of Easttown s Julianne Nicholson, who reached out to all the ladies in Philadelphia and Kabul, Hacks star Jean Smart, who thanked her late husband, and Governors Award winner Allen, who spoke to the women in Texas and Afghanistan as well as the next generation who are just beginning to fight for equality.3. Lack of Diversity Among the Winners. Again.(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)After last year s Emmy Awards saw major gains for performers of color, in particular Black performers, this year s ceremony was a step back in that department. Although RuPaul made history, becoming the person of color with the most Emmy wins, there were very few people of color who would eventually be on the winner s stage. This was frustrating to many viewers, as many performers of color were nominated this year, including Billy Porter, Mj Rodriguez, Uzo Aduba, the cast of A Black Lady Sketch Show, and the late Michael K. Williams, among many others. On the brighter side, several of the Emmys bits did recognize Black talent. One featured host Cedric and three different actresses who have played his wives on sitcoms. (The Neighborhood s Tichina Arnold, The Soul Man s Niecy Nash, and The Steve Harvey Show s Terri J. Vaughn).4. Touching Tributes to Friends We ve Lost, Including Michael K. Williams and Norm Macdonald(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/FilmMagic)While the traditional In Memoriam segment was as tear-jerking as always, several people on stage also took the time to remember their friends. Both Last Week Tonight s John Oliver and Saturday Night Live s Lorne Michaels referenced comedian Norm Macdonald, who died last week, in their acceptance speeches. And Kerry Washington made a point of mentioning the work of Michael K. Williams when presenting the supporting actor in a drama category, in which he was nominated for his work in HBO s Lovecraft Country. The reaction on her face when her friend lost that category was palpable.5. Schitt s Creek Cast Shows Why We Still Can t Get Enough of Them(Photo by Cliff Lipson/CBS via Getty Images)It s been a year since the cast of Netflix s Schitt s Creek swept the Emmys and kept us laughing all the way through that ceremony. So that s why the stars banter before presenting the award for best writing for a comedy series felt so warm. Was there actually a teleprompter issue? Was star Eugene Levy actually giving notes to the Emmy Awards writers? Does it even matter? Sometimes it s not worth asking why we re given good things.6. Conan O Brien Photobombs His Way Into Our HeartsWhen you re 6 4 with a shock of red hair and a recognizable laugh, it s hard to blend into a crowd. Especially if you re Conan O Brien. The talk-show host made his presence known at the 2021 Emmy Awards, even though he did not actually receive an Emmy. He made sure to crash any opportunity he could get, be it improvising remarks to TV Academy CEO and chairman Frank Scherma or joining Stephen Colbert and his producers on stage when they accepted the award for best variety special (live) for Stephen Colbert s Election Night 2020.On an Apple device? No season of Stranger Things has been without casualty, but the two major deaths at the end of the series’ third season are the biggest yet. Like, really big. (This is the part where we tell you there are major spoilers ahead regarding the ending of Stranger Things season 3.)SPOILER WARNING: We’re not kidding, we are going to spoil the heck out of this season in the next paragraph.(Photo by Netflix)First, Billy (Dacre Montgomery): A tragedy, but a death for a good cause. Billy spent the season possessed by the Mind Flayer, and in the final moments of the big battle, he regained his consciousness as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) reminded him of the childhood memories she’d seen while doing some of her supernatural exploring earlier in the season. Billy remembered who he was, and he ultimately sacrificed himself to stop the Mind Flayer.Billy was not a good dude — he pretty much spent the entirety of season 2 being a violent, abusive jerk — but after seeing how he became that way in Eleven’s glimpses into his past, it was satisfying seeing him tap into his humanity and realize what he needed to do for the greater good. He won’t exactly be missed — again, he was a real d-bag — but his abs might be, at least for the thirsty moms of Hawkins.(Photo by Netflix)Second, and most devastating of all, Hopper (David Harbour). Yes, Hopper! We’ll pause here for a moment of silence, particularly for this season’s fabulous Tom Selleck mustache–patterned shirt combo.OK, back to the saddest moment of the series — yes, even sadder than the flashbacks to Hopper’s daughter or Eleven’s past — when Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper locked eyes as they realized what had to be done to close the newest gateway to the Upside Down, which was hidden in the secret Russian bunker deep underneath the Starcourt Mall. Joyce had the power to press the button to close the door, but Hopper was standing next to the opening and would immediately be incinerated if she did. Both Joyce and Hopper knew what would happen if she closed the gateway, but they also knew what would happen if they didn’t. And as Hawkins Police Chief, Hopper wants to protect the greater good — and ensure the safety of his daughter, Eleven. So he nodded to Joyce, knowing they’d never get to have dinner like they’d planned, and she pulled the metaphorical trigger. Here’s the thing, though: We never saw what happened to Hopper after that. Joyce returned to the surface and broke the news to Elle (with a super-sad, wistful look), and subsequently gave her the practice heart-to-heart speech he’d written earlier in the season that turned out to be a lovely goodbye letter, filled with advice for her future — the one he ensured she’d have by sacrificing himself in that bunker. But what actually happened to him? While the emotional ending would’ve played perfectly well if Hopper’s fate were final, this is Stranger Things — and a mid-credits scene revealed that maybe it wasn’t a death that we saw. Deep inside a Russian prison, two guards took a prisoner from his cell, making sure he was “not the American.” The American, hmmmm? Who could that be referring to?Why, Hopper, of course. Think about it: when the feds finally got to Hawkins, the Russians had disappeared without a trace. How did that happen? It shouldn’t be too far-fetched of a leap to assume that maybe they took Hopper with them.Though the ending of ST3 seemed quite permanent, with the Byers family and Eleven leaving town, the Duffer brothers have said that they’d envisioned four seasons for the series. Which means that season 3 might not be the end after all, and a fourth season, potentially, could include a discovery that Hopper is still alive and then trying to get him back from the Russian prison where he’s theoretically residing. Hypothetically.Either way, this can’t be the end of Hopper and his exquisite dad bod — whether in flashback or in the flesh, Stranger Things wouldn’t be the same without him. What did you think of the ending? Do you think it s Hopper in that Russian prison? If so, do you think he ll escape or will those resourceful Hawkins kids and their elder siblings, parents, and friends find their beloved Hopper and hatch a plan to rescue him? (Photo by Courtesy of A24)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: YOUN YUH-JUNG Unbothered might be the best word to describe Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung s attitude towards her first major American awards campaign. When we chatted with the veteran star, who is Oscar-nominated for her turn as an unconventional and hilarious grandmother in writer/director Lee Issac Chung s Minari, she seemed pleased but mostly unaffected by the Hollywood hype around the film her recent accolades, which total more than 50 awards for her supporting performance.  To tell you the truth, it s not that [different], she said during an extended Zoom chat, periodically pulling on an electric vape pen that would put Leonardo DiCaprio s to shame.  I approached it simply, I am myself a grandmother. It s nothing special. She certainly never saw the awards-season hoopla coming when she signed on to the film.  One of my dearest friends brought me the script – it was so very touching and authentic. After I read it, I called her back and asked, Is this based on a real-life story? She said, Yes. And I said, Okay, I ll do it.' And so it was that she joined the quiet immigrant tale, loosely based on Chung s formative years growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, about the Yi family, led by father Jacob (Steven Yeun), which journeys from California to the South to pursue the dream of building their own farm. Of her decision to play Soonja – who is not the type of grandma the family s young son (Alan Kim) was expecting – Youn says, The people are what is important to me, not the script, not the fame, and not the money. Then she adds with a laugh: Well, not anymore. THE YOUN YUH-JUNG ESSENTIALS: HOW A CHANCE ENCOUNTER MADE A KOREAN MEGA STAR(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films)If you ve seen her work in Minari, it s hard to believe that Youn never intended to act; her career began out of a chance encounter. Searching for a part-time job at a train station while studying at Seoul s Hanyang University, she was approached and asked to stand beside someone. He was a famous MC,  Youn recalls.  He asked if I could sit by him and hand presents to the audience. I did, and then they gave me a check for it! So that was great! She was surprised to learn how much could be made as a performer, and the next thing she knew she was going out for auditions. Then, in 1971, she was approached by director Kim Ki-young to star in what would become the second feature of his Housemaid trilogy, which had begun with 1960 s The Housemaid. The film, Woman of Fire, was, like its predecessor, a hit at home and abroad and catapulted Youn into stardom. We never expected anything like what happened. We never expected to have this world reception from the audience. When I took the job, I didn t even know he was a famous director in Korea.    She quickly followed up Woman of Fire with the title role in Jang Hui-bin, playing the infamous concubine for a Korean television mini-series that became a national phenomenon. With such a debut and streak of stellar work over 50 years, she s been dubbed The Korean Meryl Streep, a comparison she humbly rejects as unworthy praise. I wouldn t dare, Youn says. No, no, no. I mean, she s everything! Her art? Her work? No, no, no. But like the chameleon Streep, Youn has also found ways to re-invent herself over several decades, even while revisiting her older work, as she did in the 2010 Housemaid remake, a feat she quickly brushed aside with another joke: I thought that s very nice, me being in [the reboot] – and still being alive. THE COMEBACK: RECORD-BREAKING SERIES AND A DARING FILM ROLEThere was a period when Youn could not be seen on screens – when she immigrated to America in 1975, she took a 10-year hiatus from filmmaking. When she returned to full-time acting in 1985, she quickly racked up an impressive streak of television work, including Hur Jun, about 15th-century royal physician that broke viewership records with nearly 65% of the nation tuning in.Later, in 2002, she got the script for the film that would restart her silver screen work. Her role in Im Sang-soo s award-winning A Good Lawyer s Wife – full of sex and affairs and dysfunction – is the type of part actor s dream to play. Still, the then 50-ish mother of two hesitated at the time because, I wouldn t be dressed most of the film, I thought, I don t want to be half-naked with a bra. She added: But that s why most of the Korean actresses of that age turned down the role. But, to tell you the truth, I was remodeling my house, and I needed to work. Pragmatic and plain-spoken, Youn is practical about her career and its progression. I don t [map it out] ahead of time because planning things is when you know it s not going to be like that. So now I don t plan anything. If something happens, it happens, I will enjoy it; or, if I fail, that s my fault. (Photo by Courtesy of GEM Entertainment)By the time she starred in Actresses in 2009, Youn was once again one of the most recognizable faces in Korean entertainment, and the unscripted dramedy teamed her up with other premiere names of Korean stage and screen, including Kim Min-hee, who starred in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook Park’s period romantic thriller The Handmaiden. In the primarily improvised Actresses, each of the six actresses plays a fictionalized version of themselves as they prepare for a Korean Vogue photo shoot at a studio on Christmas Eve. Despite the pedigree and talent surrounding her, Youn says many of the actors felt uncomfortable with that level of improvisation and self-revelation. That was the first time we d done something like that in Korea, because we were all very famous. Some didn t want to talk about their private life but, as the oldest one, [I have] nothing to lose – so, I talked about my divorce and my private life. It is no wonder she felt okay with the mockumentary premise: A gathering over cocktails between director E J-yong, Youn, and actress Go Hyun-jung – the two actors have been friends for years – had inspired the idea for the movie, with the director wanting to show the public how charming the actresses were in real life. Spending an hour with Youn – even over Zoom and with not a cocktail in sight – we can see where the filmmaker was coming from.FAN FAVORITES: SENSE8, REALITY SHOW YOUN S KITCHEN, AND A SEXY THRILLERThe role that American audiences were most likely to know Youn for, pre-Minari, was in the Netflix series Sense8, which marked her first foray into American television. In the show, created by the Wachowski siblings, Youn played an inmate who helps one of the telepathic sensates escape from prison. She told us she was surprised to learn about the series global cult-like status and the massive internet fan campaign that prompted the streaming giant to approve one final episode to tie up loose ends when it was canceled after just two seasons. I didn t know that it was such a [big deal] until you mentioned it, Youn says. I m not good at the internet, as you could guess.”It was a small part with some big challenges: the very conceit of the show – where certain people on screen are seen in the minds of some characters, but are invisible to others – made the acting very difficult. They were supposed to be invisible to me. It was very distracting while also trying to concentrate on my lines. You wouldn t know that to watch her in the series; Youn s performance as the wise prisoner made a significant impression on fans, even within her limited screen time.Scripted television is not the only place that Youn has made an impression on the small screen; she is also somewhat of a reality TV star with two shows under her belt. A chance meeting with a famed reality show producer allowed her to join the travel show Sisters Over Flowers before she later did Youn s Kitchen, which featured different twists on traditional Korean dishes.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC films. ) The producer very sincerely chased me, but I told him I m not the right person to be in a reality show, Youn says. I m a very frank person. I would be terrible. However, recognizing that the actress s undeniable charisma is the stuff reality shows are made of, he did not take no for an answer. “We kept meeting each other, and then he kept saying You re going to do the show.’ I didn t realize that at the time, but if he wanted somebody, he could get them – and that s a skill. Youn s Kitchen was another success, with the cinema icon peeling back the layers of her life a bit to celebrate with friends and good food.2012 s The Taste of Money, in which she gives a deliciously evil performance as the matriarch of an über-rich family, peeled back the layers even further. A gender-bent twist on the Housemaid story, Money placed Youn s Baek Geum-ok as the domineering leader of the house and the usual female servant character reset as a handsome young male secretary. Dismissed by critics after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the steamy thriller raised more than a few eyebrows with its depictions of sex, greed, and corruption, and has gone on to enjoy a cult-like status.Regardless of how critics judged Money, Youn marks it as another memorable moment for different reasons – it again allowed her to be very vulnerable on screen while playing a part typically given to male characters. Yeah, I was getting naked over 60, my goodness, she says. Usually, it is the men who get power and use that for sex, but this time it was me, a woman, and I have to say I liked that. FRESHEST WORK: STEALING SCENES IN CELEBRATED IMMIGRANT TALE, MINARI(Photo by Courtesy of a24)How does Youn feel about the current spotlight on Korean cinema, Korean stories, and – during this awards season – her work and Oscar chances? It s all Bong Joon-ho s fault! she says, laughing as she casts the Oscar-winning Parasite director as the villain who has brought global attention to Korean cinema. I am glad I m not in Korea talking to reporters there, [they] like to count the chickens before they ve hatched. There s pressure on me because people are expecting me to win something. We used to watch the Oscars like they were in another world, but because of him everyone in Korea thinks they are in Hollywood now.” I know things have happened, she went on to say, but this [holding up her Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh trophy with a sly smile] is the only actor award that came to me in the mail. (We re glad to know our shipping folks are on it.) When we point out that more hardware is likely coming, she gives a slight shoulder shrug and explains that nothing could ever diminish or amplify her love and connection to the film and those that collaborated with her make it.(Photo by Courtesy of a24)This bond and family-like dynamic carried over to everyone on the Minari crew, but particularly the main cast who, due to the sweltering heat, would often congregate in the set that stood in for the interior of the characters trailer home. The conditions of the shoot were a crucible – this is not a cushy trailer shoot, she says, laughing. You re in the middle of Oklahoma heat. And after one day, I thought I need to go back home. I don t think I should be shooting in America. Luckily, she stayed, in part due to an extended visit from the very friend who handed her the script in the first place – a visit that was something of a mea culpa. When Youn learned Plan B, a company co-founded by Brad Pitt, was producing the project, she figured it could be a lucrative role and inquired about the budget. Her friend relayed the rate in Korean currency, quickly calculating 200 million South Korean won (roughly 5,000), but when she learned her fee would be nowhere near that, she briefly had second thoughts. However, after the friend promised to come visit the set for an extended period of time, the idea of suffering through it seemed more palatable. In thinking back on the shoot now, she is reverential about the experience. I think of my friend sacrificing her vacation to come along with me, about hiding out in the set trailer with Alan, Steven, and Yeri [Han, who plays her daughter] – one of the few locations with ample AC. My friend is an exceptional cook, so every night we gathered at my Airbnb – everyone did – because the food was incredible, and that s how we became a family. With such a foundation behind it, it s no wonder the world – and awards voters – fallen a little bit in love with film and everyone involved, especially the unconventional grandmother at its center.Minari is in theaters and available On Demand now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot.
