This year, Rotten Tomatoes expanded our list of the best-reviewed LGBTQ movies of all time to 200 films. To celebrate those works and mark Pride month, we asked a number of Tomatometer-approved critics to reflect on the LGBTQ movies that influenced their lives and their work. One of the great challenges transgender people face is learning to deal with those who think we deserve to be treated differently because of who we are. For some, facing this idea that universal human rights are not actually meant to be universal can lead to outrage. In Sebastián Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman, protagonist Marina meets the challenge again and again as she is put in positions that undermine not only her gender identity, but also her basic dignity as a human being. As we follow her, the film offers a painstakingly authentic portrayal of transgender life.Too often, transgender narratives in film center themselves on the mechanics of transition, placing great emphasis on the pain of a soul in conflict with the nature of its being. A Fantastic Woman is a film set after all of that dust has settled, starring a transgender woman firmly settled in her post-transition world. Marina thrives in her new environment, able to share her talents as a singer in Santiago, Chile on her terms, presenting as the individual she always knew herself to be. She shares her life with her partner, Orlando, an older man with an open heart and a thirst for life. Time is rumored to be up for the first female Doctor in Doctor Who, Prodigal Son casts Catherine Zeta-Jones, while Clancy Brown takes the baddie role in Showtime s Dexter revival.  Plus, Catherine Hardwicke film Lords of Dogtown will become a series, new trailers, and more of the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYDoctor Who: The BBC Won t Confirm or Deny the Rumor About Jodie Whittaker Quitting (Photo by Casey Crafford/BBC America/BBC Studios)Could this be the end for the first female Doctor? According to a report in the British newspaper The Mirror, Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker is quitting the classic series at the end of the next season, season 13, which is set to premiere later this year. Showrunner Chris Chibnall, according to The Mirror, will stay with the series, which is also losing co-stars Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole, who play Graham and Ryan, respectively, in previously announced departures.Whittaker is the 13th Doctor, and if she does leave the series at the end of the next season, she would follow David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who stars who left the series after three seasons each. Mirror sources say Whittaker wants to leave the show to be available to take on other roles. The BBC responded to the rumor without confirming or denying it, telling Digital Spy, “We won t be commenting on any speculation around Jodie s future on the show.”Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Prodigal Son for Season 2(Photo by John Russo courtesy of Fox)Oscar and Tony Award winner Catherine Zeta-Jones has joined the cast of Fox’s Prodigal Son for season 2, playing Dr. Vivian Capshaw, the resident MD at Claremont Psychiatrics.Capshaw will immediately butt heads with Michael Sheen’s serial killer, Dr. Martin Whitley, who is assigned to clean bedpans and mop floors in the infirmary. Capshaw takes great pleasure in seeing “The Surgeon” perform janitorial tasks, until he begins to help with medical cases and the two bond. But that’s only going to spell trouble.Zeta-Jones joins the series in the second half of the season. Hall’s titular serial killer): Clancy Brown. The Billions actor will play long-haul trucker–turned–truck and truck-stop owner Kurt Caldwell, who’s a favorite resident of a small town called Iron Lake – perhaps the Oregon town where Dexter settled in the disappointing 2013 Dexter series finale, after faked his death and fled Miami? Caldwell is a real man of the people in Iron Lake, as long as you’re his friend. But if you cross him, he can be just as powerful an enemy. Enter Dexter Morgan. (TVLine)The Office alum Amy Ryan has joined the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building, a series that follows three true crime fans – played by series creator Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez – who become embroiled in a crime mystery. The series reunites Darby with Taika Waititi, who is an EP and director on OFMD and worked with Darby on Flight of the Conchords. Writer David Jenkins created Our Flag Means Death. (Deadline)Lauren Graham has exited Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist because of COVID-related shooting delays on her other series, the Disney+ TV adaptation of The Mighty Ducks. Graham played Joan, Zoey’s (Jane Levy) boss on the NBC series.PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT: Lords of Dogtown TV Series Coming to IMDb(Photo by © TriStar/courtesy Everett Collection)Lords of Dogtown director Catherine Hardwicke is adapting her 2005 movie for a TV series for IMDb (the free, ad-supported streaming service owned by Amazon). The series, written by 13 Reasons Why and Queen Sugar writer Kat Candler, will be a one-hour drama about the skateboarding scene in 1970s Southern California, centering around a teen growing up in foster care who makes friends with a group of skateboarders who idolize the famous Zephyr skateboarding team featured in the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. The Shield creator Shawn Ryan will be an executive producer on the project.A “well-placed industry insider” tells the New York Post’s Page Six that HBO Max is considering a limited series reboot of Sex and the City. Sarah Jessica Parker has said she would be interested in finding out where all the characters are in their lives now, especially in the wake of #MeToo and social media, but Kim Cattrall has made it very clear she wants to part of the series, thanks to her ongoing feud with Parker. Is there any point to a return to SATC without Samantha? In case you’re missing any of Quibi’s programming, the short-lived streaming service’s series may find a new home at Roku, The Wall Street Journal reports. The next season of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm has already begun filming, and will be set in the post-COVID world. 2. 公平游戏环境
(Photo by Jackson Lee Davis/AMC)Despite leading a show like The Walking Dead, in which any character can die at any time, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) has survived for nine years. But now that Lincoln has left the show — and will star in his own series of The Walking Dead movies — Daryl (Norman Reedus) is stepping up and a whole new crew of survivors is populating the post-apocalyptic world. An older, Walker-wise Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming) and new characters Magna (Nadia Hilker), Yamiko (Eleanor Matsuura), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Kelly (Angel Theory), and Luke (Dan Fogler) are among the new blood the series has brought in to fill TWD s Rick Grimes–shaped void. The Walking Dead is only the latest show that has had to move on in the wake of a major cast member departure. Throughout TV history, shows have dealt with losing their stars for various reasons — and in some cases the shows grew stronger with the new cast. Not all benefitted from a cast swap, however — there are certainly some duds on Rotten Tomatoes list of the most famous television replacements. Read on to find out who was replaced and why, along with how their departure was explained on screen.22. Beverly Hills, 90210 (Photo by ©Aaron Spelling Prod./Courtesy Everett Collection; Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty, pictured right)The Replacement: Valerie Malone (Tiffani Amber Thiessen, pictured left)The Reason: In 2015 Tori Spelling revealed that she eventually made a call to her father, producer Aaron Spelling, asking him to fire Doherty over her conflicts with the cast and crew. The Explanation: Brenda left for drama school in London. Valerie Malone, a bad girl from Minnesota, came to live with the Walshes for seasons 5 through 10 of 90210. In 1994, Thiessen told press on the set she thought she was cast because “they heard I had a reputation for being easy to work with.”21. Charmed (Photo by ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Prue Halliwell (Doherty)The Replacement: Paige (Rose McGowan)The Reason: According to the New York Daily News, Alyssa Milano gave producers of the original WB show (not to be confused with the 2018 reboot) an ultimatum: It was either her or Doherty. The show’s producers said Doherty wanted to leave, and they let her.The Explanation: Prue is killed by demons, and, shortly thereafter, the Halliwells discover a long-lost fourth sister, Paige, who ended up sticking around from season 4 through the show s remaining eight seasons. There s no bad blood on McGowan s part, however: The actress wrote to Doherty via Instagram when Doherty underwent cancer treatment: “The men brainwashed women in our business made it so we couldn t be friends. I regret that.”20. Baywatch (Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: C.J. Parker (Pamela Anderson, pictured)The Replacements: Donna Marco (Donna D’Errico) and Lani McKenzie (Carmen Electra)The Reason: Anderson left Baywatch to focus on being a mother. The Explanation: C.J. Parker got married off the show, and it took two new lifeguards to fill her sandy footprints. While Carmen Electra told Esquire, “I don’t think I was hired as a replacement,” costar Kelly Packard recalled auditions for “a room of Pamela Anderson–looking women” and Traci Bingham said Donna “thought she was Pamela.” Electra was only on the series for one season and D’Errico for two, but the casting proved that a rotating roster of lifeguards could survive long into syndication.19. Anger Management 23%(Photo by FX)Outgoing Character: Kate Wales (Selma Blair)The Replacement: Dr. Jordan Denby (Laura Bell Bundy, pictured)The Reason: TMZ reported that Blair complained to the producers about Sheen’s unprofessional behavior, and Sheen demanded she be fired. Sheen told Jay Leno that Blair was written out because viewers expected the show to be about their relationship. The Explanation: Charlie Goodson (Sheen) stopped seeing Kate for anger management therapy, but went into business with Dr. Denby. Reviews for Anger Management were never all that Fresh (season 1 has a 23% score on 35 reviews), so the switch didn’t seem to change much on the series — except perhaps, given season 2 s three meager reviews, that most critics stopped paying attention.18. Lethal Weapon 89%(Photo by Fox)Outgoing Character: Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford)The Replacement: Wesley Cole (Sean William Scott, pictured)The Reason: Warner Brothers fired Crawford for abusive behavior, which Crawford insisted was only in response to difficulties with costar Damon Wayans. The Explanation: The character of Riggs survived four films and a perma-rumored fifth, but on TV he was shot and killed. Scott told EW, “For a lot of fans that are upset that they’re not going to see Riggs, which I totally understand, I really believe they’re going to feel ‘OK, they handled it in a way that’s really respectful to that character and what he means to the show.’”17. Criminal Minds (Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin)The Replacement: David Rossi (Joe Mantegna, pictured)The Reason: Patinkin said that the violent subject matter of the murder-centric series was “destructive to my soul.”The Explanation: Mirroring Patinkin s own experience, Gideon also left the Behavioral Analysis Unit due to emotional distress. His former partner Rossi has filled in ever since and continues to lead the show in its 14th season.16. Chicago Hope (Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Dr. Jeffrey Geiger (Mandy Patinkin)The Replacement: Dr. Kate Austin (Christine Lahti, pictured)The Reason: Patinkin wanted to be with his family in New York, while Hope filmed in Los Angeles. The Explanation: Geiger resigned after he couldn’t save Alan Birch (Peter MacNicol) from a gunshot wound, although the show insisted Dr. Austin was not replacing him. Unlike Criminal Minds, Patinkin did return for guest appearances on Chicago Hope.15. Nashville 91%(Photo by CMT)The Character: Rayna James (Connie Britton)The Replacements: Alyssa Greene (Rachel Bilson, pictured) and Jessie Craine (Kaitlin Doubleday)The Reason: When the series was canceled by ABC and moved to CMT, Britton decided to leave the show, working with the writers to give Rayna a dramatic finale. The Explanation: Rayna died in the hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Doubleday s singer/songwriter Jessie Craine and Bilson s Highway 65 record label exec Alyssa Greene joined the cast in the series fifth season, with Bilson leaving at the end of that season and Doubleday staying on through the sixth and final year.Doubleday prepared for the worst when she entered the show, she told The Boot: “If everyone hates me, it doesn’t matter. It’s a paycheck. I’ve felt pretty at home since the day I got here.”Interestingly, Britton left 9-1-1 after only one season, and Jennifer Love Hewitt stepped in as a new call center operator. She also appeared in only the first of eight seasons of Ryan Murphy s American Horror Story anthology series, while other stars from season 1, like Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, and Jessica Lange, formed something like a troupe and continued with the show.14. CHARLIE’S ANGELS(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett, pictured left)The Replacement: Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd, pictured right)The Reason: When Fawcett left the show, she said it was because it prevented her from growing as an actor. Producer Aaron Spelling sued her for million. The Explanation: Jill resigned from the Angels to become a race-car driver, and — wouldn’t you know it? — she also has a sister named Kris who s fresh out of the police academy. Ratings held steady enough with Ladd, but dwindled when other new Angels started to rotate in during the final seasons, including Shelly Hack replacing Kate Jackson, and then Tanya Roberts replacing Hack.13. Beauty and the Beast (Photo by ©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Catherine (Linda Hamilton, pictured)The Replacement: Diana (Jo Anderson)The Reason: Hamilton left the series, which ran from 1987 to 1990, when she was pregnant. The Explanation: Catherine was killed, leaving her love, Vincent (Ron Perlman), heartbroken. Diana offered a potential new love interest, but many fans felt the magic left with Hamilton. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote for the show and told THR, You can’t do two seasons of telling the world, This is a love story for the ages, this is Romeo and Juliet, and then suddenly third seasons say, Juliet? Forget Juliet. It’s Romeo and Harriet.' 12. THE HOGAN FAMILY(Photo by ©Lorimar/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Valerie Hogan (Valerie Harper, pictured)The Replacement: Sandy Hogan (Sandy Duncan)The Reason: Wrongful termination, as Harper was vindicated in court. The Explanation: You would think star Valerie Harper would be safe playing Valerie Hogan on a show called Valerie, but Valerie Hogan died in an automobile accident. Michael Hogan’s (Josh Taylor) sister Sandy came to live with Valerie’s Family, later renamed (again) The Hogan Family. At the time, Duncan told UPI she didn’t know there was any controversy: “The story I got before I agreed to do the show was that Valerie had left the series. Valerie and I have known each other for years. And while we were never friends, we were friendly. And I m relieved to know she has told people the dispute is not my problem. I refuse to be on the hot seat.”Despite Harper’s victory, the show lasted four more seasons, including one on CBS, without her.11. M*A*S*H (Photo by ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson)The Replacement: Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan, pictured)The Reason: NBC promised Stevenson more money, but subsequent shows bombed and Stevenson regretted leaving M*A*S*H after just three seasons. The Explanation: Blake was tragically shot down while returning home. Sherman Potter joined the M.A.S.H. unit for the rest of its eight seasons, and its spinoff AfterMASH. Morgan had impressed the producers when he guest-starred as a different character in the third season premiere.10. Three's Company (Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers, pictured)The Replacement: Cindy Snow (Jenilee Harrison)The Reason: Somers got fired for asking for pay equal to John Ritter in the fifth season. The Explanation: Chrissy also had a sister we’d never met before. The show went on for eight total seasons and a spinoff, Three’s a Crowd.9. Spin City 67%Outgoing Character: Mike Flaherty (Michael J. Fox)The Replacement: Charlie Crawford (Charlie Sheen)The Reason: Fox’s real-life battle with Parkinson’s.The Explanation: Mike became an environmental lobbyist for senator Alex P. Keaton (if only we’d gotten a scene of them together!), and Mayor Winston (Barry Bostwick) got a new deputy, Charlie Crawford (Sheen). Sheen earned the show a younger audience, according to The New York Times. Sheen told the paper, “I’m just glad people are responding. I can’t comment on what they’re responding to.” Spin City went two more seasons and Fox returned as a guest star.8. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 78%(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Det. Elliot Stabler (Meloni, pictured)The Replacement: Det. Nick Amaro (Pino)The Reason: Meloni and NBC couldn’t come to terms on a new contract. The Explanation: Stabler retired, so Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) needed a new partner. Nick Amaro was that partner, and stayed on the job for four seasons. SVU has made it to 20 seasons, matching the original Law Order.7. Law & Order (Photo by NBC)Outgoing Character: DA Benjamin Stone (Michael Moriarty)The Replacement: DA Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston, pictured)The Reason: Moriarty claimed he was forced out for speaking out against a meeting Janet Reno had with NBC, believing the Attorney General would impose restrictive laws on television. The Explanation: Stone resigned and McCoy took over. Now it’s hard to imagine the show without Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy, and he’s who you’re most likely to see in a syndicated rerun. In 1995, Waterston was on speaking terms with Moriarty. “I have nothing to say about his reasons for leaving,” Waterston told The New York Times. “But I’ve talked to him since, and I think we’re OK.”6. 8 Simple Rules 58%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Paul Hennessy (Ritter, pictured)The Replacements: Jim Egan (James Garner) and C.J. Barnes (David Spade)The Reason: Ritter’s sudden death at the age of 54.The Explanation: In the aftermath of Ritter s (and his character s) death, the show added Garner as widow Cate s (Katey Sagal) father, and then Spade as her nephew who came to live with them. The show completed three seasons with the new cast.5. ER (Photo by ©NBC/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Doug Ross (George Clooney, pictured)The Replacement: Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic)The Reason: Clooney fulfilled his five-year contract with ER, even as he ascended to movie stardom. The Explanation: Ross moved to Seattle after a dispute over being caught helping a mother euthanize her terminal son. The next year, Luka Kovac joined the E.R. an attending physician. Luka even dated Ross love, Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) until the two reunited (with a surprise Clooney cameo) when Margulies left the show too. The series ran for 10 more years, ending after its 15th season (during which Clooney and several other cast members returned).4. NYPD Blue 83%(Photo by ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Det. John Kelley (David Caruso)The Replacement: Det. Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits, pictured right)The Reason: Caruso got a taste of the movie business and asked for a raise that NYPD Blue brass didn t agree to — especially after only one season. The Explanation: Internal Affairs pushed Kelly off the force, and Simone became Sipowicz s (Dennis Franz) new partner. Eventually, Rick Schroder joined the cast as well. Once Caruso was on CSI: Miami, he admitted he made a mistake leaving NPYD Blue. The modest Smits wouldn’t take credit for the ratings bump after he joined the show. “I don’t think I solely am responsible for that,” Smits told SF Gate in 1995. “But the people at the network are happy.”3. The X-Files 74%(Photo by Shane Harvey/FOX)Outgoing Character: Fox Mulder (David Duchovny, pictured)The Replacement: John Doggett (Robert Patrick)The Reason: Duchovny’s contract was up after seven years, and he was also suing Fox for syndication earnings. He would later return full-time in the 10th season. The Explanation: Mulder got abducted by aliens, of course. Agent Doggett became Scully s (Gillian Anderson) new partner, but without the seven years of rapport and back story, Patrick s Dogett just didn t have the same spark. Some critics, however, are reconsidering his seasons. In 2017, Patrick told People TV he knew the fans weren’t interested in him at first, but “we won ’em over and we got two seasons out of it.” It worked out for X-Files fans, though: Duchovny and Anderson starred in two feature films and then two additional seasons over a decade later.2. Two and a Half Men 65%(Photo by CBS)Outgoing Character: Charlie Harper (Sheen)The Replacement: Walden Schmidt (Ashton Kutcher, pictured)The Reason: Sheen’s public meltdown and lashing out against creator Chuck Lorre. The Explanation: Charlie was murdered by an ex, and the heartbroken billionaire Walden Schmidt took over his share of the rent. Kutcher said after his arrival that he drew a younger and more international audience to the show.“The demos for the show have actually started to skew a little bit younger,” Kutcher said in 2012 after half a season. “I can see a reflection of that on on the social media surfaces. You can actually see the international markets that are going to pop with the show. I think we just opened in Germany this week, and it was double.”Even Angus T. Jones (the titular half-man) left the show for a while after disparaging it publicly. Two and a Half Men was always critic-proof, so it lasted four more years with Walden Schmidt.1. Cheers 87%(Photo by ©Paramount Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Outgoing Character: Diane Chambers (Shelley Long, pictured left)The Replacement: Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley, pictured right)The Reason: Long wanted to pursue a movie career and left after five seasons. The Explanation: When Diane left Sam Malone (Ted Danson) before their wedding, he sold the bar to a corporation that put Rebecca Howe in charge, making her Sam’s new romantic foil. It worked. Cheers ran for 11 years total and Alley is arguably even more closely identified with it than Long. The show previously had to fill a void when Nicholas Colosanto died during the third season, which is when Woody Harrelson joined the series.Did we leave out your favorite replacement? Young actor Roman Griffin Davis makes his feature film debut as the title character in Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit, an anti-hate satire about a pre-teen Nazi who deals with the stresses of WWII Germany by talking to his imaginary friend Adolf. (Yes, that Adolf.) Davis s performance is being heralded by critics as one of the best child debuts in years – he s hilarious and heartbreaking, nimbly navigating the tonal shifts Waititi s movie makes as Jojo befriends the Jewish girl his mother is hiding in the house and begins to question his blind allegiance to the Fuhrer (both the real and imagined one). Davis sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for our video series Fresh First and opened up about working with Waititi and Scarlett Johansson, how he s changed since shooting, and why cheese toasties are the ideal on-set snack.

This week in TV news: a new Stephen King adaptation, a Marvel crossover, and casting updates for Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi project The Nevers, DC Universe s Titans, season 3 of The Sinner, and more.Stephen King s The Stand Gets a New Miniseries — and a New EndingCBS All Access has planned a limited event series based on Stephen King s The Stand, for which the author will write a final chapter not found in the book. The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow  an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and here at RT, we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watchlists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you.And the movies are more accessible than ever. Turner Classic Movies may have had to cancel their annual classic film festival this year, and 2018 saw the demise of their classic film app, FilmStruck, but between the newly launched The Criterion Channel streaming app and other streaming services, movie fans still have access to thousands of old Hollywood masterworks.Read below for our list of seminal classic quirky romantic comedies you need to see or revisit. More than simple boy-meets-girl tales, these love stories go far beyond the typical meet-cute and in many cases reflect unique moments in film history.Got other quirky rom-coms you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) 79% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? Married couple Bob (Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood) attend a life-changing workshop and swiftly adopt the practices they learned, much to the distress of their best friends Ted (Elliott Gould) and Alice (Dyan Cannon). The workshop and its aftermath profoundly change the couples marriages and their feelings for one another. Why you need to see it: Prior to the repeal of the Hays Code – the moral production code that regulated what could be shown on screen – most films could not overtly reference sex. This need to edit out the explicit content was one driver of the tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo of 1940s and 1950s romantic comedies. After the Hays Code was officially abandoned in 1968, a new wave of sexually explicit comedies flooded cinemas. Bob Carol Ted Alice is one of the first sex comedies and one of the best. No longer did screenwriters have to dance around the subject; director and co-writer Paul Mazursky could, in fact, address the elephant in the room. Funnily enough, having your first film score four Oscar nods and make bank at the box office ruins Hollywood, according to Mazursky; the director joked later that the film was almost too perfect, and therefore its success could never be replicated.Watch it if you like: Obvious Child, Seems Like Old Times, Chances Are, Chasing AmyWhere to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.It Happened One Night (1934) 99% What is it? An heiress on the run (Claudette Colbert) joins forces with a man she meets, but little does she know he is actually a reporter in need of a story. Why you need to see it: One of only three films to ever pull a clean sweep of the five major Oscar categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress), It Happened One Night is one of the truly great romantic comedies. The movie combines Clark Gable s undeniable charm, Claudette Colbert s comedic timing, and the feel-good filmmaking of Frank Capra. Our only question is, what has taken you so long to see it?Watch it if you like: Roman Holiday, Almost Famous, The Proposal, Annie Hall, You ve Got Mail, Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist, Working GirlWhere to watch: Rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Sabrina (1954) 93% What is it? Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) is a lovestruck chauffeur s daughter who nurses an impossible crush for David (William Holden), the youngest son of the family that employs her father. When Sabrina returns home after years in Paris, the newly engaged David is suddenly ready to romance her and dump his fiancée – something that David s older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) is determined to prevent. Why you need to see it: This is a must-watch because of Bogie, Hepburn, Holden, and writer-director Billy Wilder. Audrey Hepburn was the perfect choice for the stylish Cinderella love interest and rightfully earned the Best Actress nomination she received for the film. Nominated for six Oscars and taking home the prize for Best Costumes, Sabrina is an early example of a film whose cast was fleshed out with A-list talent and Oscar winners. Bogart, who replaced Wilder s first choice of Cary Grant, was arguably one of the biggest stars on the planet, and here he was cast alongside Hepburn and Holden, both of whom had taken home Best Acting Oscars in 1953. This was the kind of dream-team casting not often replicated. Bogart was never sure he was the right choice for Linus, but his put-off posturing both on and off set served his performance well.Watch it if you like: While You Were Sleeping, Pretty Woman, Some Like it Hot, She s All That, The Princess Diaries, Roman HolidayWhere to watch: Available to stream on Crackle, or buy or rent it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Pillow Talk (1959) 93% What is it? Marriage-minded interior decorator Jan Morrow (Doris Day) must share a phone line with her playboy neighbor, Brad Allen (Rock Hudson). When Brad sees the beauty on the other end of his line he decides to woo Jan under a false identity and inadvertently falls in love during the process. Why you need to see it: Pillow Talk was a risqué project for the squeaky clean Doris Day and Rock Hudson, but turned out to be the first of several successful films the pair made together. The clever innuendos peppered throughout the Oscar-winning script were, in fact, scandalous by 1950s film standards; it was testament to the large screenwriting team that they got past the censor board with the hilarity still intact. Compare it to Bob Carol Ted Alice, and you can acutely appreciate how much progress was made in just one decade. Watching it with a modern eye is a bit like watching classic anti-drug films like Reefer Madness.Watch it if you like: 40 days and 40 Nights, Two Weeks Notice, Never Been Kissed, 10 Things I Hate About YouWhere to watch: Streaming now for free on Hoopla Digital, or rent or boy it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Shampoo (1975) 62% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? A playboy hairdresser (Warren Beatty) enlists the husband of one of his rich female lovers/clients when he seeks a loan for his salon. A series of events then ensue that places the hairdresser at a party with his girlfriend, her husband, and several ex-lovers – including the one that got away. Why you need to see it: The Owl and the Pussycat and Bob Carole Ted Alice loosened the cap off cinematic sexual oppression, but after the success of X-rated films like Deep Throat and Midnight Cowboy, the initial shock of sex had lost its luster by the 1970s. In 1975, a fresh approach was needed to wow audiences, and Warren Beatty provided it with his satirical sex comedy Shampoo – though many at the time did not appreciate it. A sex comedy where nothing happens and *spoiler alert* no one falls in love? It is easy to understand why audiences and many contemporary critics dismissed the film. The laughs are tempered by bleakness and the film ends up saddened by its characters awkwardness, wrote Time Out London. However, on a second look, you can appreciate how George s womanizing ways were a direct product of the 1960s free love movement, and the film offered a clever depiction of the 1970s hangover that much of America was suffering after all of that 60s excess. Beatty s script, which he co-wrote with Robert Towne, acutely understood the character of George and his sexual apathy.Watch it if you like: American Pie, Three s Company, Wedding Crashers, The Birdcage, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Don Jon, Trainwreck. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu. His Girl Friday (1940) 99% What is it? No-nonsense news editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) has only a few hours to prevent his star reporter – and ex-wife – Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) from quitting the paper to marry a simple-minded insurance salesman she met on vacation. After a convicted murderer escapes from jail, Burns is thrust into a race against time to stop Hildy – and secure the exclusive story. Why you need to see it: If Capra s It Happened One Night firmly established the fast-talking screwball comedy, His Girl Friday might have perfected it. It Happened One Night is a near-perfect romantic comedy, but director Howard Hawks took over-talking and quick dialogue to new heights with His Girl Friday, establishing a style that has been replicated everywhere from the Gilmore Girls to Glengarry Glen Ross.  You don t know whether you have been laughing or having your ears boxed, wrote New York Times film critic Frank S. Nugent at the time of its release.Watch it if you like: Gilmore Girls, Obvious Child, Silver Linings Playbook, Raising Arizona, The Newsroom, MoonlightingWhere to watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu, available to rent or buy from FandangoNOW, Google Play, and  iTunes.Death Is a Woman (1967) 82%(Photo by Courtesy of Criterion Collection. )What is it? An exotic dancer wants a child and her current lover is not willing – but his best friend might be tempted to fill in for him.Why you need to see it: We could go on and on about how A Woman is a Woman is a clever rebuttal to the American musical comedy. We could talk about Jean-Luc Godard and his visionary camera work and shooting style. We could talk about French New Wave or French sex comedies. But the best reason to see the film is a woman, and that woman is the incomparable Anna Karina. Just gaze into her eyes and let her performance hypnotize you.Watch it if you like: The Love Witch, Bridget Jones Diary, She s the One, Cleo from 5 to 7, Easy AWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or buy from Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Barefoot in the Park (1967) 85%What is it? A conservative attorney (Robert Redford) rushes into marriage with a carefree woman (Jane Fonda). Realizing they are very different people, the young couple struggle to stay in love and avoid divorce. Why you need to see it: It would be criminal not include a Neil Simon film on any list of great classic romantic comedies. Writer of The Goodbye Girl, The Heartbreak Kid, and Seems Like Old Times, Simon was a master of opposites-attract love stories. Jane Fonda plays the free-spirited Corie to seductive perfection, and Robert Redford manages to stifle all his natural charms to embody the stuffed shirt, Paul. It s a love story where the question is never, Will these two fall in love?  The only question in Barefoot in Park is, Can they stay together? The film was not universally loved upon release, but we tend to agree with Time Magazine, which wrote at the time: Simon has taken a plot as bland as a potato, sliced it into thin bits – and made it as hard to resist as potato chips. Watch it if you like: Dharma Greg, My Fair Lady, Shakespeare in Love, Pretty Woman, Moonstruck, The Way We WereWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or purchase on Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Looking for more movies and shows to watch? Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes of the series, which Condal will write.Sapochnik won the 2016 Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Game of Thrones episode Battle of the Bastards and shared the 2019 Outstanding Drama Series Emmy award with Martin, Gerardis, series creators David Benioff and D.B. Greg Yaitanes (Banshee) will also direct and is also a co-executive producer.Martin introduced more series contributors in a blog post, noting Wes Tooke (Colony), Claire Kiechel (The OA), and Ti Mikkel, a writer s assistant for Martin s Fevre River Packet Company. Even Aegon the Dragon couldn’t conquer the Seven Kingdoms all by himself, Martin wrote. He needed the help of his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya. Ryan and I had some great assistance as well, and I wanted to give a tip of the crown to three talented and hard-working young writers who helped to bring this one home. Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy, but as we’ve learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower. The younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne, Daemon is a peerless warrior and a dragonrider who possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air… (Photo by Jeff Spicer/Getty Images; Jonathan Hession / ©Netflix;Gregg DeGuire/WireImage; Netflix )In February 2021, HBO announced additional stars (pictured in order above):Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, who loyally and faithfully serves both his king and his realm. As the Hand sees it, the greatest threat to the realm is the king s brother, Daemon, and his position as heir to the throne.Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. A dragonrider and wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, The Queen Who Never Was was passed over as heir to the throne at the Great Council because the realm favored her cousin, Viserys, simply for being male.Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria. She came to Westeros with nothing, sold more times than she can recall, and could have wilted but instead she rose to become the most trusted — and most unlikely — ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne.(Photo by Ollie Upton/HBO)Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon aka “The Sea Snake.” The lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen, “The Sea Snake,” is the most famed nautical adventurer in the history of Westeros. He built his house into a powerful seat that is even richer than the Lannisters and that claims the largest navy in the world. More recent cast announcements:Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole. Many would say that Rhaenyra was born with everything but she was not born a man.Emily Carey will play Young Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, and the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms. We won t spoil some of the deaths with too much detail, but if you want that information, you can find more at A Wiki of Ice and Fire. When It Takes PlaceThe Targaryens landed on Dragonstone more than four centuries before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. The Dance of the Dragons was a war of succession fought from 129 to 131 AC — that is, after Aegon I s conquest of Westeros. What’s the Big Conflict? The Targaryen civil war was a conflict over primogeniture, the system of inheritance by a firstborn child; often, the first-born son. A lord’s first child will inherit the castle and lands of his or her father over an older sibling no matter what his or her aptitude for governance compared to a sibling’s abilities. The Targaryens generally followed primogeniture, though there were exceptions, as during the rule of King Jaehaerys I.When King Jaehaerys I s eldest son, Prince Aemon, died, he left a daughter, Rhaenys. King Jaehaerys I then chose his next eldest son, Prince Baelon, to be new Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne rather than bestowing the honor on his granddaughter, a move that even Queen Alysanne disapproved of. When Baelon died unexpectedly — as well as Queen Alysanne and one of their daughters — grief-stricken Jaehaerys convened the Great Council to vote on succession, and the council chose Baelon’s son Viserys instead of Rhaenys’ son Laenor.During his reign, Viserys had named Rhaenyra, his daughter by his first wife, as his heir, but upon Viserys’ death, his eldest son, Aegon, by his second wife instead ascended the throne, causing a great rift in the kingdom. By this time, Rhaenyra was also married to her uncle, the “rogue prince” Daemon Targaryen who had long sought the throne himself.Fire Blood recounts the battles between the siblings, their spouses, their offspring, their loyal followers, and, most viciously, the Targaryen dragons.Who Are the Characters?*confirmedKing Viserys I (103–129 AC)* – his death in early 129 began a great struggle of succession between his eldest child Rhaenyra and his first-born son, Aegon. Viserys’ dragon was especially notable: Balerion, the Black Dread, who King Aegon I Targaryen rode back during the Conquest of Westeros. Born in Valyria, Balerion was the last living dragon to have seen the Freehold, which the Targaryens left 12 years before the Doom. He was black-scaled with black wings and even black fire, which burned so hot that it melted the stone towers of Harrenhal (you saw the ruins in Game of Thrones when Arya Stark served as cupbearer to Tywin Lannister). Balerion died at around 200 years old in 94 AC, less than a year after Prince Viserys claimed him and while the prince was still very young; therefore, it is unlikely that House of the Dragon will show Balerion alive, unless the writers change the story or in flashback.Alicent Hightower* – Viserys I’s second wife whose followers who would see Aegon crowned and were called “the greens” after a green gown the queen wore during a great tourney in which Rhaenyra wore traditional Targaryen black and red.Daemon Targaryen* – Viserys I’s brother, Daemon was mad, bad, and dangerous to know — a skilled warrior and a denizen of disreputable Flea Bottom establishments. Rumored to have taken his teenage niece Rhaenyra’s virginity, he was sent into exile by Viserys. Years later, he would marry Rhaenyra, and upon the death of Viserys, he crowned his own wife, which touched off the bloody civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Dragon: lean, but fearsome red Caraxes, also called “the Blood Wyrm.”Rhaenyra* – Viserys I’s daughter and first-born child by Aemma Arryn, Viserys I s first wife who died in childbirth with her second child, a son, who also died. Rhaenyra was beautiful and beloved by her father and the people and was nicknamed “the Realm s Delight” when she was young. As she grew older, she grew headstrong and competed with her ambitious stepmother Alicent. Her followers were called “the blacks” because of the gown the princess wore on the king and queen’s fifth anniversary tournament. Dragon: young yellow-scaled Syrax.Ser Laenor Velaryon – Married his reluctant cousin Rhaenyra, who remarked to her father, “My half-brothers would be more to his taste.” Dragon: Seasmoke.Rhaenys Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon* – Parents of Laenor Velaryon. She was known as The Queen Who Never Was, because she was passed over as heir to the throne in favor of her uncle. Corlys was known as The Sea Snake, because of his prowess at sea.Harwin Strong (aka Breakbones )* – son of Lord Lyonel Strong and heir to Harrenhal, he was Rhaenyra’s lover while she was married to Laenor.Ser Criston Cole* A member of the Kingsguard, he became embroiled in the Targaryen civil war by switching allegiances from Rhaenyra, for whom he was once sworn shield (and perhaps loved), to Queen Alicent Hightower and her offspring.Princes Jacaerys “Jace,” Lucerys “Luke,” and Joffrey “Joff” Velaryon – Rhaenyra and Laenor’s children, though rumored to have been fathered by Strong because they had dark hair like Strong, while cousins Laenor and Rhaenyra both had the Targaryen light silver/gold hair. The boys dragons were, respectively: Vermax, Arrax, and Tyraxes.King Aegon II (129–131 AC) – Viserys I’s eldest son by Alicent, married his sister. Dragon: Sunfyre, the Golden. Helaena – Aegon II’s sister-wife, had three children with Aegon. Dragon: Dreamfyre.Twins Jaehaera and Jaehaerys and their younger brother Maelor – the offspring of Aegon II and Helaena.Blood and Cheese – hired killers who murdered Jaehaerys in front of his mother, sparking her descent into madness.Mysaria* – a prostitute who served as Daemon’s mistress of whisperers in Flea Bottom. The prince impregnated her, but she lost the child during a voyage to Lys to escape Viserys I’s anger over Daemon’s attempts to give the child a dragon egg, per Targaryen custom.Aegon III (131–157 AC) – the son of Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, he ruled after his uncle Aegon II, and at a very young age, married his cousin Jaehaera, who died young. His rule marked the end of the Dance of Dragons. He had five children by his second wife, Daenaera Velaryon. As a child, he grew melancholy after escaping a naval attack by mounting his dragon, but leaving his brother Viserys behind and believing that he had died. The brothers reunited later in life. Dragon: Stormcloud.Mushroom – a fool in the courts of Viserys I Targaryen, Aegon II Targaryen, Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Aegon III Targaryen. When creator Alena Smith’s biographical drama Dickinson premiered on Apple TV+ in 2019, it almost instantly became television short-hand for the Millennial malaise. After all, what says “stuck in a rut and not feeling like you’re being taken seriously by your family or at work” than an anachronistic-heavy story about Emily Dickinson — a poet whose sole authenticated adult portrait looks like she’s giving what passed for an eye roll in mid-19th century Massachusetts?Depicted here by actress Hailee Steinfeld, she’s a pouting, twerking insomniac who has self-sequestered in her childhood bedroom. She harbors (sometimes unrequited) feelings for her brother’s fiancée and dreams of taking carriage rides with Death (Wiz Khalifa) while her parents breath down her neck about finding a nice young man. The first season was Certified Fresh with favorable reviews mentioning how it “challenges our straight-washing of history” and holds a “sense of fun, if not humor, that pervades even scenes about mortality or misogyny.”(Photo by Apple TV+)The second season, which premieres its first three episodes January 8 on Apple TV+, ups the show’s spooky and supernatural vibe. During the course of the season, Emily and her sister, Lavinia (Anna Baryshnikov), lead a séance with the help of their brother’s employee, Hattie (Ayo Edebiri, who is also one of the show’s writers). And Nick Kroll guest stars as Edgar Allan Poe (even though, for those doing the math at home, the mortality-obsessed poet died a decade before this season’s setting of 1859).But the eeriness particularly resonates with a character known simply as Nobody. Played by The Americans alum Will Pullen, the mysterious figure manifests in a way that helps Emily handle her own inner turmoil over whether she should risk pursuing a career as a published poet – even if it means she could perish from rejection. It’s a topic the real Dickinson pondered exhaustively.“She very explicitly wrote in letters and poems, these really conflicted feelings about fame,” Smith told Rotten Tomatoes, adding that the poet “seemed to think that fame was very dangerous for artists.”But because most of Dickinson’s work was discovered posthumously, Smith said, “the question is whether she kept saying that because she was trying to convince herself that she didn t want something that she actually wanted very desperately. Or whether she was deeply was aware of how poetry comes from a really private place and that if you don t protect that private, hidden inner life, you are going to lose touch with the truth.”(Photo by Apple TV+)Speaking of losing touch with the truth, Smith stressed in a letter to journalists about the series that “this is our fictional look” at Dickinson and her family and friends. Still, fame like Dickinson s “just is so relevant and ubiquitous right now because of social media and the way that our lives are all happening online,” Smith said, making an exploration of the poet s possible inner musings on the topic very timely.“Everyone, on a daily basis is having to struggle with this question of ‘Do I put myself but there or not?,’” Smith said of today’s society. “And also, I suppose on the flip side, [of] being a consumer of social media and of these images that you see from people not knowing what s real and what’s not.”And it’s keenly an issue for the Dickinson cast who, because of the nature of their jobs, are public figures if not outright famous.Steinfeld recalled that Smith met with her and her cast mates, asking each of them what was their relationship to fame and whether they want to be famous. Despite being a former child star who received an Academy Award nomination for 2010’s True Grit before she could legally drive, Steinfeld told Rotten Tomatoes, “I would say it s not something I learned very quickly that I ve thought of, really at all. I love the work that I do. And I love that I m able to do it. And that s really the extent of my thought process.”“A big challenge, for me, was sort of taking myself out of my own life and out of my own thought process in regard to that, and kind of figuring out what [fame] was for Emily,” she said. “One thing this show has never failed to do is really challenge my way of thinking. Her poetry does that alone.”(Photo by Apple TV+)This season also introduces Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones depicting Samuel Bowles, the newspaper publisher and editor who was a close friend of Dickinson’s and her family. In the series, he may seem like he is flaunting his power and influence as he decides whether to publish one of her poems.“It’s easy to feel like we need certain people, men and women, in our lives to help either better our careers or further our careers or personal things in our personal lives,” Steinfeld said. “And I think [this is about] coming to a realization that you can, in fact, achieve what it is you want in life on your own — it might take you longer, it might be harder, but you can. And we see that with these characters in a time where achieving anything outside of their norm was near impossible.”(Photo by Jose Perez/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images)And how does this compare to Steinfeld’s other TV role this year? In Disney+’s upcoming series Hawkeye, which is based on characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she plays Kate Bishop, a character whom Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton/Hawkeye grooms to take over his title.“I do find that the characters I ve played have … this strong will to stand up for themselves, have an opinion and a point of view, and use their voice,” she said. “And I love that. I love that I ve been called on to play those roles as well.”She also stresses that she didn’t necessarily intend to punctuate 2021 with one show about brains and another one about brawn, saying that “the timing of how things evolve and falling into place with everything that s happened this year is sort of coincidental.”(Photo by Apple TV+)But stories of exposure and fame aren’t the only ways that this season of Dickinson — or the people depicted — resonate with today’s audiences. Edebiri’s Hattie is a fictional character, but Smith said, “we looked at some Black women writers from the time and, you know, they lived crazy lives, and they had senses of humor.”And, despite spending much of the series being belittled by his father and underestimated by others, Dickinson brother Austin (Adrian Enscoe) secretly helps fund the publication of a Black-run newspaper and allows it to operate out of his barn.“Abolitionism was really trendy in the northeast at this time,” Enscoe said; however, “there were deeply problematic things with the abolitionism movement just in the way that they that they viewed Black people as, like … some [people] that we have to save — like white saviorism. It’s interesting to apply that that view now to what Austin is doing.”(Photo by Apple TV+)The new season also continues to look at sexual relationships through the female gaze, especially when it comes to Ella Hunt’s Sue Gilbert — a w
Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles such as Morbius, a Baby Driver sequel, and a new female-led Fast Furious spinoff. This WEEK S TOP STORYJAMES GANDOLFINI S SON WILL PLAY YOUNG TONY SOPRANO(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)HBO s The Sopranos obviously had a single lead, but James Gandolfini was supported by a large ensemble cast, so the prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark is likely to have a large cast as well. The main character in this story about the 1967 Newark race riots will be Dickie Moltisanti (played by Alessandro Nivola), the father of Christopher Moltisanti from The Sopranos. ( Moltisanti translates from Italian as many saints. ) We ve also learned recently of the casting of first Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), rumored to play Tony Soprano s parents, and then Corey Stoll (Ant-Man) and Billy Magnussen (Game Night). We know from The Sopranos that Tony Soprano was around during this era, and now we also know that young Tony will be played by James Gandolfini s actual son, Michael Gandolfini, who was also in HBO s The Deuce. Gandolfini won the opportunity to reprise his father s most famous role following an extensive audition process [and] his screen presence, mastery of Tony’s mannerisms, coupled with his resemblance to the elder Gandolfini made him the standout choice for the role because no one there understood the character better. New Line Cinema is expected to open The Many Saints of Newark in wide release theatrically, in either late 2019 or sometime in 2020.Fresh Developments1. BIRD BOX REUNION: NETFLIX AND SANDRA BULLOCK ARE REBORN(Photo by Netflix)Netflix famously does not disclose viewership numbers for most of their shows and movies. (Very often, pundits are left to guess at numbers based on social media reactions.) That s why it was significant a few weeks back when the streaming giant confirmed that over 45,000,000 accounts had viewed the thriller Bird Box, breaking the company s first seven days record. Just after Bird Box celebrated the end of its first month on Netflix, the news broke that the company and its Bird Box star are reuniting for another genre-based book adaptation. Sandra Bullock, Netflix, and the producers of IT are teaming up to adapt Mark Millar s comic book Reborn, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, Certified Fresh at 90%). Reborn joins a busy slate for Chris McKay, who is also developing adaptations of Jonny Quest, Nightwing (AKA Dick Grayson), and Dungeons Dragons, all for Warner Bros. Bullock is expected to star as an 80-year-old woman who dies in a Manhattan hospital to find herself Reborn in the afterlife world of Adystria, a magical land of monsters and dragons where good and evil are waging an eternal war. Reborn was written by Kick-Ass and Kingsman creator Mark Millar, who signed a lucrative deal in 2017 that also includes Netflix shows based on Millar s American Jesus and Jupiter s Legacy.2. EDGAR WRIGHT WORKING ON BABY DRIVER SEQUEL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR FILM(Photo by Wilson Webb/TriStar)It has now been over 18 months since the release of Baby Driver, the long-in-development heist movie from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), following his high profile departure from Ant-Man. Wright continues to move forward on a sequel, a script for which he says exists in a first draft. In the meantime, he s now preparing to direct another original project this summer. We don t know a title or any casting yet, but Edgar Wright s next film will reportedly be a psychological horror film with a female lead set in the Soho district of contemporary London. Exact story details aren t available, but Wright has cited both Don t Look Now and Repulsion as inspirations, which suggests a film filled with hallucinations and paranoia.3. RON HOWARD TO ADAPT BESTSELLING HILLBILLY ELEGY FOR NETFLIX (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Universal Pictures)Netflix currently has their most ambitious project to date, Martin Scorsese s 5+ million mobster epic The Irishman, in post-production, aiming for 2019 s awards season, and is showing little signs of slowing down in their pursuit for major productions. The latest example came this morning with the news that Netflix is committing million to produce director Ron Howard s adaptation of the bestselling book Hillbilly Elegy. J.D. Vance s book is a memoir about his childhood growing up in a small town in Ohio after his family moves there from the Appalachian area of Kentucky. Howard and his Imagine Entertainment have a long relationship with Universal Pictures, so the move to Netflix is a major development, with the budget Netflix was willing to put up reportedly being the deciding factor. Ron Howard is coming off last year s Solo: A Star Wars Story and is currently working on a documentary about opera star Luciano Pavarotti. Hillbilly Elegy is being adapted by screenwriter Vanessa Taylor, who co-wrote The Shape of Water and is also working on the Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos movie Bad Blood.4. NICOLAS CAGE WILL FREAK OUT WHEN HE SEES THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE(Photo by RLJE Films)Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) may have been one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, but big budget Hollywood has largely ignored his works (although there have been dozens of independent movies). If there s a single story that best exemplifies the difficulty in adapting Lovecraft to film, it just might be the 1927 short story  The Colour Out of Space. That s because the premise revolves around what scientists call an impossible color (basically, a color that humans can t perceive). Put another way, you can t very well film a color which your human audience can t see. Well, that story is indeed getting its own movie, Color Out of Space, with Nicolas Cage reuniting with the producers of Mandy (Certified Fresh at 92%). Cage will play a New England small town farmer whose life is turned topsy-turvy following the crash of a meteorite that brings the titular color to Earth. Color Out of Space will be directed by South African director Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) as his first feature film in over 20 years since he was (reportedly) fired from directing 1996 s The Island of Dr. Moreau.5. VIN DIESEL CONFIRMS PLANS FOR FEMALE-CENTRIC FAST FURIOUS SPINOFF (Photo by Scott Garfield/Universal Pictures)As of next Friday, we will be within six months of Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, the spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Filming of the next entry (Fast Furious 9) of the main Fast Furious franchise will reportedly begin in April, but Vin Diesel confirmed this week that a third branch of the family tree is now being officially developed. Diesel and his producer sister Samantha Vincent took to Instagram to reveal that they have hired three screenwriters to work on a female protagonist-led Fast Furious spinoff. Lindsey Beer co-wrote next year s post-apocalyptic thriller Chaos Walking (starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley), and is also working on reboots of Short Circuit and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Geneva Robertson-Dworet co-wrote Captain Marvel and last year s Tomb Raider. As for Nicole Perlman, she co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy (co-starring Vin Diesel), and is also working on Detective Pikachu, the Labyrinth remake, and Marvel Studios Black Widow. We don t know yet who will star in the spinoff, but Michelle Rodriguez is probably at the top of the list.6. THIS WEEK IN RELEASE DATES: THE CRAWL, JOHN CENA S PLAYING WITH FIRE, BAD NEWS FOR THE LOUD HOUSE(Photo by Mary Cybulski/Universal Pictures)Paramount Pictures announced release dates for two films this week and yanked another project from their schedule completely, signalling that the project has probably been cancelled. The Crawl is a natural disaster horror film about a young woman who becomes trapped in a flooding house during a Category 5 hurricane and must battle against Florida’s most savage and feared predators, and it s now scheduled for August 23, 2019, up against Angel Has Fallen (the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen). Playing with Fire is a family comedy about three orphaned kids sent to separate foster homes, with wrestler-turned-actor John Cena starring, along with Judy Greer, John Leguizamo, and Keegan-Michael Key. Playing with Fire is scheduled for March 20, 2020 (the week before Disney s Mulan remake, and Paramount s G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes). Finally, Paramount has pulled a movie based on the Nickelodeon animated series The Loud House from their slate, where it had formerly been scheduled for February 7, 2020.7. FORMER DOCTOR WHO MATT SMITH JOINS JARED LETO IN SONY/MARVEL S MORBIUS(Photo by BBC courtesy Everett Collection)Following the box office success of Venom (5 million globally as #6 for 2018) and the acclaim and awards given to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures is moving forward confidently with their plans to adapt their share of Marvel s properties. Jared Leto has been attached to star as the vampire anti-hero Morbius for a while now (with July 10, 2020 speculated to be the film s target date). The second actor to join Morbius will be Matt Smith, who is still best known to American audiences for playing the 11th incarnation of BBC s Doctor Who. Smith s role is currently unknown, but Collider is speculating that he may play Loxias Crown, a friend of the scientist Michael Morbius who takes the same serum but is transformed into a more evil bloodthirsty creature. In related news, we also learned this week that transgender actor Zach Barack has been cast in this summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) in what is a groundbreaking first for a superhero movie of this scale.8. GINA RODRIGUEZ TO STAR IN LONG-IN-DEVELOPMENT BOBBIE SUE (Photo by John Castillo/Indomina Releasing)The fifth and final season of the CW series Jane the Virgin is set to debut in March, and its star Gina Rodriguez is continuing to seek more movie roles (like last year s Annihilation) to expand her career past television. With that in mind, Warner Bros. has cast Rodriguez to star as Bobbie Sue, which has been in development since 2008. (At one point Cameron Diaz had been attached to star.) Rodriguez will play a young woman from South Boston who is a scrappy, headstrong young lawyer who lands a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. Bobbie Sue will be directed by Charles Stone III, whose most recent film was last year s Uncle Drew (63%), and who also directed Drumline (Certified Fresh at 82%) and the baseball comedy Mr. 3000 (54%).Rotten Idea1. KEVIN HART JOINS BODY-SWAP COMEDY BLACK FRIDAY(Photo by Warner Bros.)Put simply, a movie star s box office status is not defined simply by being in very successful films, but also by their ability to ensure that people will buy tickets for films they might not otherwise. The million opening weekend for The Upside was not itself huge, but significantly more than one might otherwise think a remake of a French movie from 2011 might be. In the last two weeks, Hollywood has been making deals quickly with Kevin Hart s people, which last week alone included signing Hart to star in the Monopoly movie and a tragic drama called Fatherhood. This week, STXfilms signed Hart for two comedies, the first of which will be a body swapping fantasy called Black Friday, which will be followed by an untitled international romantic comedy. No other details were revealed about Black Friday, but the title suggests it might the body swapping might be racial in nature. We re calling this a Rotten Idea because STXfilms The Upside earned a 39% Tomatometer.
1. ALFRED MOLINA TO RETURN AS DOC OCK IN NEXT TOM HOLLAND SPIDER-MAN MOVIE(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Well before Disney made their dozens of announcements yesterday about almost every other Marvel movie, the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland (we ll just call it Spider-Man 3 for now) repeatedly popped up in social networking news. Having said that, it might be important to look at the various stories with caution, as not all of them have been confirmed. Let s start with the most official announcement, which is that Alfred Molina will be reprising his role as Spider-Man 2 (Certified Fresh at 93%) villain Doctor Octopus. Setting aside his apparent death in that film (sorry for the spoiler, but you only had sixteen years to see the movie), Molina s character also comes from what we could consider a separate movie reality (in which Tobey Maguire plays Spider-Man) than that of Tom Holland s Peter Parker, in the same way that Jamie Foxx s Electro was in a movie starring Andrew Garfield s Peter Parker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Many writers are interpreting these particular announcements as possible confirmations that the next Spider-Man could be a live-action take on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%), including stories like this one that state that Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone are returning as well. In truth, none of those actors has been officially announced yet, though it is worth mentioning that Emma Stone recently dropped out of Damien Chazelle s Babylon due to scheduling conflicts; we just don t know what those conflicts were. Elsewhere, it was also rumored that Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in the popular Netflix series, might also appear in the film, but again, it s still just a rumor until it s confirmed. Sony Pictures has scheduled the next Spider-Man for December 17, 2021; you can read our own in-depth breakdown here.2. PLASTIC MAN GETTING  FEMALE-CENTRIC  REVAMP (PLASTIC WOMAN?) (Photo by DC Comics)The idea of the original super-stretchy superhero Plastic Man (who predates, say, DC Comics own Elongated Man, Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, Elastigirl of The Incredibles, and Ms. Marvel) getting his own movie has been bouncing around since the 1990s when the Wachowski siblings wrote a Plastic Man screenplay as a potential project to take up after The Matrix. Warner Bros. has once again revived the Plastic Man project, but this time, it s being described as female-centric, although it s unclear what exactly that means (for example, will Plastic Man now be a woman, or will there be another lead character who s a woman?). The new creative lead on Plastic Man (Plastic Woman, maybe?) will be relatively new screenwriter Cat Vasko, who has worked on several not-yet-produced projects, including Fierce Kingdom, Margot Robbie s Queen of the Air, and an adaptation of the award-winning comic book series Lumberjanes.3. DIRECTOR STEVEN SODERBERGH IS MAKING A SEX, LIES VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Outlaw Productions)It s difficult to imagine now, with all that has happened and changed in the last few decades, but there was a time (1989, to be precise), when the Sundance Film Festival was a relatively sleepy little film festival up in the mountains that wasn t besieged every year by the film industry and aspiring filmmakers. The movie that arguably started the indie revolution of the 1990s was Steven Soderbergh s debut feature film, sex, lies videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%), starring James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo. Over 30 years later, Soderbergh revealed this week that he is now working on a sequel to that film with its two female leads, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo, both agreeing to reprise their roles as sisters. Soderbergh didn t reveal anything else about the sequel, except that one of the sisters now has an adult daughter who is about the same age as the characters were in the original 1989 film.4. DREAMWORKS TO ADAPT POPULAR DOG MAN GRAPHIC NOVELS (Photo by Scholastic)Although Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 87%) may have been unfortunately titled (since it has yet to be followed by a second epic movie), the film also has a Fresh Audience Score of 61%. (Instead of a sequel movie, the story continues on Netflix as The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which is now in in its fourth season.) The good news for Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey this week is that another of his popular children s graphic novels is now being developed as an animated feature film as well. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have acquired the rights to Pilkey s graphic novels series Dog Man for a feature film that will be directed by Peter Hastings, who has previously worked on the popular animated TV series Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. As the title suggests, Dog Man is a canine superhero who fights crime alongside his kitten sidekick Li l Petey. The various Dog Man graphic novels have sold nearly 40 million copies in print to date and have been translated into 40 different languages.5. JENNIFER HUDSON TO STAR IN HER OWN CHRISTMAS MUSICAL (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)If the COVID-19 pandemic had never happened, the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson, would have come out this past August, instead of its new release date of August 13, 2021. While we all wait for that movie to come out, it sounds like Jennifer Hudson might already be preparing her next movie musical, as she is now producing and expected to star in a new project for New Line Cinema. The untitled musical comedy will revolve around Christmas songs both classic and new ones written for the movie  in a story about a down-and-out singer’s life being turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit. The untitled Christmas comedy is currently being written by TV writer Ira Madison III (Daybreak, Nikki Fre$h).6. CHRIS PRATT TO EARN THE BLACK BELT IN MARTIAL ARTS COMEDY (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This was obviously a big week for all things Marvel, but one of their stars lined up a project this week completely separate from all things superhero-related. Chris Pratt will star in the independent coming-of-age martial arts comedy The Black Belt, which he will also produce. The premise, written by TV writer Randall Green (Billions, The Perfect Date), revolves around a shy teenage boy who s trying to learn karate, with Chris Pratt attached to play the uncle who serves as a mentor in the boy s quest. Chris Pratt s Indivisible Productions will partner with a relatively new company called Monarch Media, which recently wrapped production on its first feature film, A Week Away. Other projects on Chris Pratt s schedule include the science fiction action movie The Tomorrow War (7/23/2021), the recently wrapped sequel Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), a supporting role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and, as of yesterday, a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ in late 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sometime in 2023.7. KINGSMAN PRODUCER REVEALS PLANS FOR SEVEN MORE SUPER SPY MOVIES (Photo by Giles Keyte/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)It was just eight years ago when comic book writer Mark Millar first published his indie series Kingsman: The Secret Service, but since then, those comics have given us Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 74%), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and coming soon, the prequel The King s Man (3/12/2021). Talking about his company s ambitious expansion plans, Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa revealed this week that producer and director Matthew Vaughn has plans for something like seven more Kingsman films, as well as a Kingsman TV series, and two or three other franchies. It s unclear what those seven additional Kingsman movies might be, but it could be that the prequel The King s Man, starring Gemma Arterton and Ralph Fiennes, could serve as a launching point for additional prequels, in addition to further Kingsman movies starring Taron Egerton. Kingsman could also inspire spin-off movies, and Mark Millar s comics are part of a Millarworld shared universe that also includes Kick-Ass (Certified Fresh at 76%), which, incidentally, Vaughn also directed.8. JURASSIC PARK SCREENWRITER GOING OLD SCHOOL WITH THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Although we regularly hear about new movies based on comic books and video games, it s been quite a while since this writer remembers writing about a new project based upon a radio serial from the 1930s. That, however, is exactly what Universal Pictures is now developing as The Green Hornet and Kato (titled thus to put emphasis on the martial arts expert sidekick), which has its roots both as a radio serial and as a short-lived-but-well-remembered 1960s TV series starring Bruce Lee as Kato. Universal s new project should not be confused with Sony s 2011 comedy The Green Hornet (Rotten at 44%), directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, which was considered a box office bomb and failed to launch a franchise. To get The Green Hornet and Kato revved up, Universal Pictures has enlisted one of their heavy hitter screenwriters, David Koepp, whose impressive filmography includes the first Jurassic Park, the first Spider-Man, David Fincher s Panic Room, and Tom Cruise s War of the Worlds (he s also also currently working on Harrison Ford s Indiana Jones 5 (July, 2022) and a remake of Bride of Frankenstein). Universal won the rights to The Green Hornet following a bidding war in January.9. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN (AND OTHERS) RESPOND TO WB S HBO MAX ANNOUNCEMENT(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)Last week, Warner Bros. made the monumental announcement that their entire 2021 theatrical slate will also premiere day-and-date on the studio s HBO Max streaming service. That slate of 16-17 movies actually does not include Tenet (Fresh at 71%), since that movie already came out this past summer, but that hasn t deterred the film s director, Christopher Nolan, from speaking out against the move. Nolan described the HBO Max move as a bait and switch  against filmmakers who thought they were making big screen experiences for what Nolan called the worst streaming service. Other directors who voiced dissatisfaction with the deal included Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Judd Apatow, and the Directors Guild of America. Of the directors whose films are included in the 2021 move, the most vocal has probably been Denis Villeneuve, who was quoted as saying that Warner Bros might just have killed the Dune franchise. As for Christopher Nolan, there is now concern and speculation that Warner Bros. might lose the acclaimed director who gave them such films as Inception and the three Batman movies starring Christian Bale. All that being said, there are also people who back Warner Bros, especially considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is limiting theater attendance anyway, with director Steven Soderbergh being among them. (Never mind the fact that Soderbergh signed a three-year deal with HBO back in January.)On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Ryan FujitaniThis morning the Critics Choice Association (CCA) announced the film nominees for the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards, and Netflix led with 24 nominations for their films, including Mank, Malcolm Marie, Da 5 Bloods, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. The buzz around the Netflix biopic Mank had previously been considerably muted, with many singling it out for below-the-line categories, but after leading the Critics Choice film nominations with 12, the story about Citizen Kane s prickly scribe Herman Mankiewicz is back in contention. The biopic earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried), and Best Director (David Fincher). A24 s immigrant tale Minari (Certified Fresh at 198%) followed closely behind with 10 nominations, providing competition for Mank in Best Picture, Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-jung), and Best Director (Lee Isaac Chung) as well. Couple today s nominations with recent SAG nominations, including the coveted Best Ensemble nom, and things are shaking out very well for the quiet drama, which will go head to head with Oscar frontrunner Nomadland. Not to be left out, the Frances McDormand-led drama currently sitting at the top of our Awards Leaderboard  was nominated for 6 awards of its own, including Best Picture and Best Director for Chloé Zhao. The winners will be revealed live on The CW on Sunday, March 7, 2021 from 7-10pm ET/PT, with star Taye Diggs returning to host. Our editorial staff has considered the year in television and curated a list of series that may not have met the criteria for Certified Fresh, but nonetheless have captured our imaginations and earned our recommendation anyway. The Expanse 94%What It Is: In the 23rd century, after colonizing the solar system, humans make first contact with an alien race. But rather than meet face-to-whatever, the interaction occurs via the ancient, extinct race s super-advanced A.I. technology, which humanity struggles to understand, communicate with, and ultimately control. Why You Should Watch It: It s been 10 years since Syfy s Battlestar Galactica remake from Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) went off the air. The series, which topped our list of the 100 best sci-fi series of all time, won worldwide fans through its gritty space-opera storylines about the human struggle with and against intelligent machines. The BSG world felt lived in, and its characters, both human and machine, presented a seemingly viable space-based future. The Expanse, which Amazon dramatically rescued from cancellation this year, is BSG s very worthy successor in offering a similarly complex sci-fi tale with engaging characters and award-worthy production design. It stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, and Thomas Jane. Why the show hasn t enjoyed the same level of worldwide appeal is one of the series greatest mysteries.Where to Watch: Amazon, Syfy (season 3)Commitment: around 25 hoursPicked By: Debbie Day, TV Features EditorBarry 99%What It Is: In this dry, sometimes unexpectedly somber HBO dark comedy, a professional killer for hire from the Midwest travels to Los Angeles for a hit and stumbles into an acting class, where he not only discovers a community of aspiring actors who welcome him but also begins to imagine a quieter, more normal life. Why You Should Watch It: Thanks to his up-for-anything enthusiasm and easygoing charisma — not to mention his impeccable comedic timing — SNL and Documentary Now alum Bill Hader has earned a sizable fanbase over the years. Those fans were always going to show up for Barry, no matter how good (or bad) it was. Fortunately, the series does a magnificent job balancing Hader s natural boyish charm and his less frequently utilized — but still incredibly effective — proficiency at communicating deep pathos (see: The Skeleton Twins), and he s aided by a stellar ensemble that includes Stephen Root, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Goldberg, and Henry Winkler in one of his finest roles in years.Barry begins with a funny idea, infuses it with real emotional investment, and tosses in a few Oh, sh ! moments just to keep you on your toes. Hader and Winkler have already taken home Emmys for their efforts, and they re both up for Golden Globes next, so now is as good a time as any to see what all the fuss is about.Where to Watch: HBOGOCommitment: A little over 4.5 hoursPicked by: Ryan Fujitani, Sr. EditorBabylon Berlin What It Is: While investigating a pornography ring, Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) discovers a web of conspiracies with huge implications for Germany as a whole. Why You Should Watch It: The idea of the Weimar Republic (the era of German history that spanned from the end of World War I until the rise of the Nazis) has exerted a powerful fascination to this day. It was a time that produced a flowering of artistic expression — from the Bauhaus Movement to The Threepenny Opera, not to mention such cinematic masterworks as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Metropolis, and The Blue Angel — and a moment of (relative) tolerance for LGBTQ people. It was also a time of political upheaval, during which a democratic government attempted to hold together a nation struggling with extreme economic insecurity, a time when communists and fascists brawled in the streets. Historians dispute some elements of this narrative as myth, but while Babylon Berlin may be imperfect history, it’s exhilarating entertainment. Its Berlin is all bright neon and dark shadows, decadent parties and sudden outbursts of violence, mysteries and underground plots. We all know the horrible ending to this story, but the characters in Babylon Berlin don’t, and seeing this tumultuous period through the lives of regular people living in the moment gives the whole thing an air of haunting pathos.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: Just shy of 16 hoursPicked By: Tim Ryan, Review Curation ManagerKilling Eve 89%What It Is: This badass British spy thriller follows two female leads — MI5 intelligence officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and international assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) — who become obsessed with tracking each other down. Why You Should Watch It: There’s a reason Oh is getting finally getting her long-deserved award recognition for this role: She’s phenomenal as a mild-mannered government employee who heads up a task force to find a female assassin (an also-phenomenal Comer), beginning a deadly cat-and-mouse game between the two women. The BBC America series is also frequently incredibly funny, thanks to sharp writing from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunesCommitment: About 5.5 hoursPicked By: Jean Bentley, Assistant TV EditorPeaky Blinders 92%What It Is: A raw mob epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), a World War I veteran and leader of the “Peaky Blinders” gang, has started the family business of running a bookie service as well as providing local muscle. Why You Should Watch It: This gritty crime drama will keep you glued to your screen as Tommy tries to build his empire and cement his legacy, all while facing the ever-changing landscape of the new century post-WWI. Guns, gambling, influence, politics, and the streets — this show has it all. Great costume and set design lure viewers into 1919 England to experience the region s post-war trauma. See how far Tommy will go to make a buck and gain power and the collateral damage his family must endure because of it. The series did not offer a new season to U.S. audiences in 2018, but with season 5 coming in 2019, now is a perfect time to binge it.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: About 24 hoursPicked By: Shane Crocker, Motion Graphic DesignerChilling Adventures of Sabrina 81%What It Is: This comic book–adapted Netflix series from the creator of Riverdale is a dark reimagining of the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch story. Half-witch, half-mortal Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) refuses to sacrifice her human relationships in order to keep her witchy powers and must navigate the boundaries between the mortal and supernatural worlds. Why You Should Watch It: If you’re the kind of witch who wishes Halloween could be a year-long holiday, look no further than Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. This show has plenty of campy magic and glamorous gore, but it’s more than flashy spells and Satanic references. Each of Sabrina’s allies — her aunts, cousin Ambrose, human friends, and demonic frenemies — has their own depth and intrigue, which makes their world colorful and worth a deep investment. It’s ultimately a coming-of-age story: Watching Sabrina come into her own, and change minds to do so, is exciting, empowering, and fun. She makes some big mistakes along the way, but who can blame her? She’s only just learning to play with hellfire.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 11 hoursPicked By: Sophie-Marie Prime, USC’s Rotten Tomatoes FellowForever 95%What It Is: Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen star as an ordinary married couple tethered to routine until a freak accident changes everything they thought they knew about themselves and the world. Why You Should Watch It: Much has been written about how Better Call Saul is an ode to the everyday (crime and dubious legal practices notwithstanding). They couldn t be more different, but if you re a fan of BCS, 2018 s Forever will appeal just as well. Created by Alan Yang of Master of None and featuring prolific comedic actors Rudolph and Armisen (do they ever sleep?), the show poses big questions while simultaneously offering tiny details for viewers to chew on long after the final episode of this compact series ends. Avoid spoilers as much as possible before indulging in this series, which somehow marries banality and longing to great effect.Where to Watch: AmazonCommitment: 4 hoursPicked By: Sara Ataiiyan, Review CuratorSchitt's Creek 93%What It Is: Schitt’s Creek is an amalgam of everything that is good and holy about Canadian entertainment. Why You Should Watch It: Led by Eugene Levy, his gorgeous son Dan, and their beautifully thick eyebrows, Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, their fall from grace, and their new life in a tiny town surrounded by some of the most wonderful, eccentric, and underrated characters on TV. The series is a rare bird: both funny and heartwarming, while completely insane and totally relatable. In watching, I have laughed so hard I cried, but I have also cried so hard that I had to laugh (specifically, season 4, episode 6). The relationships, the chemistry, the number of wigs Moira owns, Alexis’ vocal fry, and so on — everything about this show is so perfectly curated that you would be hard pressed to find anything else like it on television.Where To Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Google Play, iTunes, VuduCommitment: About 20 hoursPicked By: Zoey Moore, Community ManagerManiac 84%What It Is: Loosely based on a Norwegian show of the same name, Cary Joji Fukunaga’s mindtrip of a miniseries delves into the depths of the human mind with humor, heart, and just the right amount of heady conversations to keep you thinking. Why You Should Watch It: It’s the kind of show that can delicately explore the fragile folds that are the human mind and mental health, while still provoking a fully belly laugh (usually followed by a cathartic cry). Between Emma Stone and Jonah Hill’s melancholy chemistry, the singular force of confidently neurotic nature that is Sonoya Mizuno, and Justin Theroux and Sally Field s “special” parent–child relationships (truly something to behold), you feel for each character you meet. For a show about anxiety and depression, it’s refreshingly present. There are no endless flashbacks or flash forwards, even with some of the more cerebral elements. You share moments with the characters as they have them, making for an engaging, emotional viewing experience. Oh, and there are elves, therapy robots, tons of wild accents, unexpected mammals, and a neat retro futuristic feel that’s at once nostalgic and current. It may sound kind of heady, but trust us, it’s worth the trip.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 6.5 hoursPicked By: Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation LeadTerrace House: Boys & Girls in the City What It Is: A reality series documenting the real lives of six roommates in Japan. Why You Should Watch It: For those who hate traditional reality TV and want insight into Japanese culture, this is your show. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of love triangles and conflict, but it’s more civilized. It’s the ultimate comfort watch! When you catch up with this season, there’s previous Terrace House series (“Boys and Girls in the City” and “Aloha State”) to enjoy!Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: There are 42 episodes available from the most recent season, all around 30 to 40 minutes each — and it runs through 52! The time commitment is A LOT, but SO worth it.Picked By: Eileen Rivera, Sr. Director of ProductionHappy! 84%What It Is: Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Nick (Christopher Meloni), a degenerate hit man and ex cop, gets beaten up by mobsters only to wake up in the hospital seeing a cheerful blue unicorn named Happy (Patton Oswalt). Nick learns Happy is the imaginary friend of a kidnapped little girl named Hailey, who is being held captive by a demented Santa Claus. Happy won’t stop bothering Nick until they find Hailey and bring her to safety. Nick’s harsh, aggressive behavior clashes with Happy’s childlike mentality, creating a blend of violent dark humor living in each episode. Why You Should Watch It: Happy! is a solid mix of dark humor and violence — all set in a Christmas-centric world. It is the true opposite of everything we usually watch during the holidays. Through the season Nick gets into trouble with the mob, his former police partner, and his previous romantic partners, but it’s the absurdity of all these scenarios that keep you hooked. One of the most rewarding aspects about the show is the deeper you get, the wilder it becomes, from murderous side characters to a Willy Wonka-type corporate overlord. Happy! is not for the faint of heart and is truly made for fans of antiheroes. The casting is also particularly fun, as Meloni is the polar opposite of his Law Order: SVU character. Think: the crazy cook in Wet Hot American Summer, but darker and more twisted.Where to Watch: Netflix, SyfyCommitment: About 6.5 hoursPicked By: Jason Blagman, AssistantElite 97%What It Is: Rich, sexy Spanish teens clash with working-class students at their elite private school, leading to murder. Why You Should Watch It: Gossip Girl meets Big Little Lies meets Skins meets Cruel Intentions meets The O.C. meets Veronica Mars meets well, basically every single other of the very best teen dramas for this Spanish-language soap-to-end-all-soaps. The eight-episode season features overachieving teens doing teen things like vying for a scholarship, having sex, doing drugs, blackmailing, and murder. The private-school uniforms evoke Gossip Girl, the class clashes evoke The O.C., and the murder-mystery at the center, featuring flash-forwards to the teens being interrogated by police, is very BLL. Elite is addictive and pulpy and  will most certainly keep viewers up late trying to figure out who killed [spoiler]. Pro tip: If you don t speak Spanish, Netflix will usually default to the dubbed version. To avoid that travesty, and make sure you select the European Spanish audio track.Where to Watch: NetflixCommitment: About 8 hoursPicked By: BentleyHappy Valley 98%What It Is: A kind of Fargo for the South of England, Happy Valley focuses on policewoman Catherine Cawood’s (Sarah Lancashire) personal and professional lives in the struggling, drug-ridden town for which the series is named. Each season comes with a different mystery, extended across that season’s six episodes, and while they’re dark and twisted fun, the show’s true focus is Cawood’s past – particularly the rape and murder of her daughter by the convict Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) – and its refusal to stay buried. Why You Should Watch It: There is a reason Lancashire was at one time Britain’s most highly paid TV actress: her Cawood is one of TV’s great creations. She’s tough as nails at work, and at home, and yet is only ever barely holding it together, and Lancashire’s performance is revelatory for those unfamiliar with her work. She’s as compelling a TV anti-hero as any of the guys you’d find on AMC or HBO. Lancashire is well matched by a supporting cast that includes Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey s sinister O’Brien) as her sister Clare, who is coping with sobriety, and James Norton as the menacing Royce, whom anglophiles might recall swooning over in Grantchester and War and Peace, and who is rumored to be in consideration to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond. It can be dour, nasty stuff, but series creator and writer Sally Wainwright infuses it with just enough heart, humor, and quirk – this is small-town-TV-England after all – to make it utterly bingeable. Happy Valley is another Netflix title that didn t release a new season in 2018, but will in 2019, making now a great time to binge.Where to Watch: Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, VuduCommitment: 12 hoursPicked by: Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefPose 98%What It Is: A look inside the underground ball scene in the 1980s, made famous by the documentary Paris Is Burning, in which competitors from various “houses” walk, dance, and/or perform in drag to win big trophies and bigger boosts social stature. Why You Should Watch It: That Pose is genuinely groundbreaking – it features a largely transgender cast, many of whom have not acted professionally before – was reason enough for many to tune in when the Ryan Murphy series premiered on FX in 2018. That it was genuinely thrilling, romantic, and ultimately moving was the reason most stayed on for all 10 episodes. Murphy’s series plays out like Fame at times, and like an episode of Drag Race at others. Which is to say there is as much new-to-New-York excitable pluckiness as there is shade being thrown around. The ball scenes are dynamically staged, with outrageous costumes (the pilot’s royalty-themed ball is a particular treat), and dangerous levels of fierceness. But what makes Pose something special are its softer moments, away from all that voguing. Moments like when Elektra, played by Dominque Jackson, who was a genuine house “mother” during the 1980s, grapples frankly with whether to undergo sexual reassignment surgery. Or when Billy Porter’s Pray, who hosts the ball nights, keeps bedside vigil for his ailing lover. Porter, nominated for a Golden Globe this year, is a series standout, along with Indya Moore, whose complex relationship with married boy from the ’burbs Stan (Evan Peters) will break your heart.Where to Watch: Amazon, Fandango Now, FX+, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTubeCommitment: 10 hoursPicked by: Meares
