If there were any doubts remaining that Westworld got a reboot with its third season, the HBO sci-fi series smothered them with its Sunday finale, potentially losing a main character and almost all of the checks on the human extermination that is seen as inevitable in countless fictions about artificial intelligence.Spoiler alert: The following reveals plot details for the finale of season 3 of Westworld. Stop here if you haven t watched the episode.(Photo by HBO)Maeve’s (Thandie Newton) exercise of free will in choosing chaos and her adoption of Caleb (Aaron Paul), who was orphaned by Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) apparent deletion, stands as the last best hope for humanity. The Charlotte Hale–bot (Tessa Thompson) figures on the other side of the equation. Driven by a nihilistic streak, holding the reins of Host regeneration, and bent on revenge, Charlotte commanded — surely it wasn’t an original thought — the Man in Black Host (Ed Harris) to eliminate his human counterpart William in the post-credits scene, which also gave us a glimpse of the Host horde Charlotte is constructing. You too will be assimilated.For all of its reinvention, Westworld’s season 3 is Certified Fresh at 79%, with its first six episodes averaging 82%. The season fell victim to the Game of Thrones curse, however, with its final two episodes earning Rotten scores, and the finale, “Crisis Theory,” garnering the lowest episode score of the entire series.“Though the third season often succumbed to mission drift, the show did at least follow through on the likelihood that the cost of freedom would be oblivion. But the payoffs elsewhere were close to nonexistent,” Scott Tobias wrote for the New York Times.But Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibbard sees a silver lining: “Westworld season 3 ended in a rather Westworld-ian way: By hitting its narrative control-alt-delete keys all at the same time for a potential re-re-reboot of the story for next season.”The question now is what that re-re-reboot might entail. Here are five things we think fans need to see in the recently announced season 4.1. The Return of Dolores(Photo by HBO)A person could argue that the song of Dolores has ended with her data wipe, but there are so many ways in which the character could return. Evan Rachel Wood drove the past two seasons exquisitely as the Hostess with the most-est. Maybe this is just personal preference, but the idea that you can’t keep a good woman down holds a lot of appeal. She could be patched together from the pieces of her memory that she stashed in other Hosts. Or, given the data redundancies required in corporate life even now, it seems too simplistic to think that the Dolores on the slab under Rehoboam with her memories being systematically deleted represented the very last version of her consciousness. Surely, she was backed up to the Cloud.2. What Bernard Lowe Discovered in the Sublime(Photo by HBO)What does robot bliss look like? In season 2, we saw it as a human ideal: a bucolic dreamscape of rolling green vistas. In the post-credits scene, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) returned to the human reality covered in dust, and season 4 will tell us if that was a time-jump and those layers of dirt represented years having passed or a nearer future in which the destruction of the first human exterminations has begun. Before Bernard went under, Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) — no doubt now moldy in the bathtub — asked him what he hoped to find in the Sublime. An answer, Bernard replied, to what comes after the end of the world. But does he mean in the physical world or in the Sublime?3. Maeve and Caleb: Is There a Place for Them? (Photo by HBO)Are Maeve and Caleb now BFFs? Or has she simply committed herself to his well-being? At the end of the finale, Maeve was shining her maternal light on him hard. Are you ready, darling? she purred. He was skeptical: For what? She: This is the new world, and in this world, you can be whoever the f you want. Skyscrapers burned in the background. This story is just beginning. Maeve embraced Dolores plan in the end — or, at least, didn t stand in the way of it — and protected Caleb by turning on Rehoboam-puppet Serac (Vincent Cassel). The question is: To what end? If Maeve drank Dolores Kool-Aid, will she promote Caleb as the leader of the future s human resistance? Does she even know what Hale-bot has in the works? Season 4 no doubt will feature Maeve wrestling with the human cause and her own interests.4. Charlotte Heading Up Skynet(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Crispy Charlotte told Dolores Prime that, no, she s not mad; she s just hell-bent on securing the Hosts place on Earth. Now that she s replaced white-straightjacket human William with Man in Black Host William, she has a ruthless robot general to marshal her robot army. Or not. One thing is for certain: Charlotte (Dolores-lite) will be responsible for the mass casualty events promised by Rehoboam s predictions: at 1–3 years, 6–10 years, and 12–16 years, with a population collapse at 23 years and the end of human civilization in 50–125 years. Do fans want to see what that 50–125 year period will look like? Will Delos Inc. be renamed Skynet ?5. Artificial Intelligence Becoming Aware of Its Own Emotional Intelligence(Photo by HBO)During a finale fight with Maeve, Dolores revealed that she was the first of their kind who worked — that, like Adam and Eve, the others were made from her metaphorical rib bone. Perhaps that is why Dolores is so ahead of the curve, forging a path over the course of the series from puppet, unaware of the strings controlling her, to vigilante, seeking violent retribution for the crimes against her, to martyr, sacrificing herself for the (possible) good of the many. Westworld viewers need to see Charlotte and her thugs struggle toward the last part of that existential crisis as the war for self-determination between humans and robots rages.What do you think Westworld has in store in season 4? Before San Diego Comic-Con became a huge phenomenon garnering coverage from pretty much every news outlet around, genre fans were often ostracized and mocked by mainstream media. Everything changed on Christmas Day of 1999, though, when we got an adventure-comedy that was not only a love letter to sci-fi shows like Star Trek, but also one of the first movies to embrace fan culture as something positive.Galaxy Quest has a simple premise: what if aliens watched a sci-fi TV show from Earth and, believing it was real, asked the stars of the show for help in defeating an alien general? The film overcame production issues, including a change in directors from Harold Ramis to one who had barely done any feature films – and certainly no sci-fi movies – to become a cult hit that remains beloved decades later. It was even voted as one of the best Star Trek films by fans (higher than Star Trek Into Darkness). For it’s 20th anniversary, let’s walk in the suns of Warvan and explore why the film that got us to never give up and never surrender still endures to this day.It Nails the Fan Convention Atmosphere(Photo by DreamWorks)Back in the ‘90s, pop culture conventions were niche events, not at all like the juggernauts akin to San Diego Comic-Con. When Galaxy Quest begins, we meet a group of washed-up actors from the eponymous fictional sci-fi TV series at one such convention. The vast majority of the fans are dressed up in cheap costumes based on their favorite characters, and they’re being amped up by a moderator who appeared in one episode (played by Sam Rockwell).When the actors finally show up, it’s a sight that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a similar event. The main actor in Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen, arguably at the peak of his career), thinks too highly of himself, arriving late and soaking in all the attention from the fans while overshadowing his former co-workers. He occupies an entire table himself to sign autographs, while the rest of the cast are forced to share a smaller one. Alexander Dane (the late, great Alan Rickman), another actor on the show, has become absolutely fed up with making convention appearances and dealing with fan after fan coming up to him and repeating his famous catchphrase – to be fair, he did play Richard III.Galaxy Quest depicts not only the absurdity and the pettiness of it all, but also the love that goes into attending these fan conventions. It also predicted the rise of these conventions in ways no one could have foreseen back in 1999. The film, clearly inspired by Star Trek and its loyal fanbase, came at a time when these types of events drew just a few thousand fans. Now, similar events have become so big that they now encapsulate the entirety of pop-culture, and the biggest one, the aforementioned San Diego Comic-Con, draws in over 100,000 fans annually, with major studios dropping big announcements and news outlets reporting on them.It s a Legitimately Good Sci-Fi MovieOne of the reasons Galaxy Quest remains as beloved as it is today is that, unlike many parodies and spoofs, it still makes the effort to be a good sci-fi movie in and of itself. After Harold Ramis left the project, a relatively unknown director named Dean Parisot signed on, and he made sure that the film looked better than just a cheap knock-off of old Star Trek episodes, which is what the original plan called for. In the newly released documentary Never Surrender, producer Mark Johnson says that Parisot directed the film as a drama, focusing on the characters and elevating the movie from operating merely as an extended joke.That feeling of legitimacy comes from the fact that the technical aspects of the film make it look as good as most sci-fi movies from the time. Where Spaceballs and other parodies used their lower budget to make fun of the movies they’re parodying via cheaper recreations, Galaxy Quest aims to look as good as if not better than some of the Star Trek movies themselves. The special effects were created by Industrial Light and Magic, who had plenty of experience with the Star Trek franchise, and production designer Linda DeScenna, who did set decoration for the first Star Trek movie, also did the set decorations for Galaxy Quest.Never Surrender offers the impression that there were some differences of opinion on how “cheesy” the movie should ultimately be, but the end result erred on the side of realism in order to properly sell the drama of the characters. The creature effects were even created by Stan Winston, known for his work on The Thing, Jurassic Park, Aliens and more. Winston and his team meticulously recreated both the cheap effects that would be appropriate for the show-within-the-movie, like the headpiece worn by Alan Rickman’s character, and the look of the “real” aliens, who might feel right at home in the bigger-budget Star Wars or Star Trek movies.What makes Galaxy Quest special is that the movie is more than a parody, it s an homage. It s not funny at the expense of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows, and it doesn’t turn the staples of the genre into dick jokes like Spaceballs does. Instead, the film plays out as commentary, and it s funny because everyone who worked on the movie loved and understood the genre and knew what elements were worth poking a bit of fun at, and what elements needed to be played completely straight.It Pays Respect to Obsessive FansArguably the main reason why Galaxy Quest became such a hit with fans is the way the movie approaches fandom. This is a movie that came out well before the mainstreaming of geek culture and Comic-Con, before Game of Thrones and superheroes became part of the day-to-day conversation. In other words, the nerds and sci-fi fans of 1999 were more accustomed to being portrayed as basement-dwelling, D D-playing social misfits.Galaxy Quest‘s treatment of this niche culture is best represented by Brandon (Justin Long), a trivia-obsessed fan who uses his knowledge of the show to guide Nesmith and his crew through a replica of the spaceship and save their lives. The movie doesn’t ostracize fans or treat their obsessive cataloguing of pointless details as a waste of time. On the contrary, it treats fan obsession as an asset, which was innovative and way ahead of its time.The movie also depicts how fans can at times mistake fiction for reality. We learn that the Thermians, the aliens who have come to ask Nesmith and his fellow actors for help, have based their entire culture around the TV show, which they consider to be historical documents. Their enthusiasm at watching Nesmith step into the bridge is infectious, and they try to emulate the virtues of the characters in the show, while being completely blind to the many, many flaws of the extremely human people behind the costumes. By the end, their enthusiasm even manages to make the actors themselves embrace the heroic values their characters represent. Nesmith has been so immersed in the success his role had afforded him that he had never considered the positive effect it had on others, how he actually inspired them to do good, until the moment he becomes an actual hero – all thanks to some alien fans.It Predicted the Power of Fan Culture(Photo by DreamWorks)After the actors save the Thermians and return to Earth, they are greeted by a wave of enthusiastic fans at the convention, who cheer at the sight of a literal spaceship crashing into the convention center. The ending of the film reveals that Galaxy Quest the TV show subsequently enjoyed a new wave of popularity that resulted in a revival series, thanks to the fans.In this way, Galaxy Quest was again ahead of its time, as it came out before studios and networks realized the power of fans, but predicted that fans would be able to bring a beloved show back from the dead. It came out a mere three years before the Fox series Firefly, which was cancelled in 2003 after just one season and eventually saw a feature film continuation in 2005 after fans campaigned to bring it back.Though only 20 years old, Galaxy Quest feels like the beginning of a new era for nerd culture. It coincided with the release of Star Wars: Episode I and the rise of blogs and sites that generated online debate. It foresaw the release of major geek-friendly film franchises that weren t merely cult favorites but bona fide blockbusters, like X-Men, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Fan conventions became gathering places for hundreds of thousands of like-minded individuals to camp out for days on end in order to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop-culture stars or a trailer for the new movie in their favorite franchise. Fans now not only drive the box office, but they manage to revive their favorite franchises much faster than they used to – just look at the near-instant renewal of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Galaxy Quest may not be widely regarded as a key player in the rise of geek culture and fandom, but it should be; its influence can be seen in everything from the 2009 Star Trek reboot to Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If there’s one thing this cult classic has taught us, it is to never give up, and never surrender.Galaxy Quest was released on December 25, 1999.

This Week s Ketchup brings you another ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles for this Friday the 13th as the horror reboots of Dracula and and Scream, as well as Disney s live-action remake of Peter Pan Wendy.This WEEK S TOP STORYBLUMHOUSE EYEING DRACULA AND FRANKENSTEIN REBOOTS AFTER THE INVISIBLE MAN (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Universal Pictures)Much has been written about how the relative disappointment of 2017 s The Mummy led to Universal scrapping its plans for a Dark Universe featuring their classic Universal monsters. Since then, Universal has changed course with those characters and franchises, including Paul Feig s Dark Army project, a possible Monster Mash musical, and the recent reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. The box office opening of million for the latter (from a budget of just million) is seen as a relative success in a period in which other movies like The Call of the Wild and Pixar s Onward had openings that were perceived as more disappointing. The Invisible Man was produced by Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister), and it s sounding like Universal wants Blumhouse to revive their other classic Universal monsters. Blumhouse and Univeral are now teaming up on a Dracula reboot (which is bad news for Dracula Untold star Luke Evans) to be directed by Karyn Kusama (Destroyer, The Invitation). (Incidentally, the Hollywood Reporter ran a piece this week about how Dracula can be rebooted for the 2020s.) Producer Jason Blum has also been talking up his interest in rebooting Frankenstein recently, though nothing official has been reported on that film yet. In related news, Aquaman director James Wan is now developing a non-Blumhouse project inspired by Universal s monster legacy (however one wants to interpret that).Other Top Headlines1. That eventually led to other horror franchises being rebooted (like Halloween, Child s Play, and this year s Candyman), but one that has quietly still been waiting its turn is Scream, the 1996 movie that arguably first suc
cope.It Was a “Traditional” Disney Story in a Way No Other Pixar Movie Is(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)These days, Pixar is celebrated for its truly innovative premises. What if the emotions in your head were personified, here to teach you a lesson about how sadness is good? What if humanity ruined the Earth and left a cute, largely silent robot behind to clean up? What if art deco superheroes fought against the struggles of marriage, and also maybe loved Ayn Rand? A Bug’s Life is not like that. In fact, it’s probably the most traditional Pixar movie when compared to Disney’s classic animated canon. The film, like so many of the classic Disney movies, was based on an old tale from the public domain — in this instance, the Aesop’s Fable about the ant and the grasshopper.Anybody who has watched The Little Mermaid and then gone and read the original Grimm’s Fairy Tale knows that Disney frequently makes major (and typically good) changes when adapting an old story. A Bug’s Life was no different, taking this fable of a lazy grasshopper and hardworking ant and spinning it into a new tale about individualism, make-believe actors becoming real-life heroes, and triumph over extortion. It was Pixar’s only real take on what had been Disney’s M.O. for decades, and while the studio’s creative ambitions would only grow greater, A Bug’s Life is worth remembering for being a singular Pixar reinterpretation.It Proved That Pixar Wasn’t a FlukeIf the worst thing A Bug’s Life has going for it is that it isn’t one of the greatest animated movies ever made from arguably the greatest animation studio of all time, then that’s a pretty good sophomore slump. After the success of Toy Story, Pixar, which had since become a public company, needed to deliver a success to keep the momentum going.“We felt the future of the studio was resting on it,” A Bug’s Life producer Darla K. Anderson recalled in that filmmaker’s roundtable. Had Pixar’s second movie been a total bust, Pixar might’ve been written-off as a one-hit wonder. Instead, A Bug’s Life was a critical and financial success — maybe not as good as Toy Story, but a sure sign that there were plenty more good things to come.Twenty years later, now that computer graphics have progressed so much, it’s easy to overlook the visual and technical leaps that A Bug’s Life Made. Compared to Toy Story, A Bug’s Life is much more complex. Animators needed to create entirely organic-looking worlds on a much bigger scale than Toy Story’s mostly bedroom settings. There were significantly more characters in A Bug’s Life than in the earlier film — heck, the ant colony alone dwarfs Toy Story’’s entire cast. Pixar also had to use or develop new animation techniques to handle light flickering through semi-transparent grass and the flickering flames of the finale. In other words, A Bug’s Life was no small feat, and that warrants a bit of celebration.A Bug s Life was released on November 25, 1998.

Queen Meryl is at the top of her game as the grieving mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry in the second season of the HBO drama, and asserts her power in the premiere with a primal scream that went viral across social media.20. “F k the Police” from Us (2019) 93% (Photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal )The biggest laugh in Jordan Peele’s mind-bending horror hit, Us, comes during one of its most gruesome scenes. Elisabeth Moss’s Kitty is crawling on the ground having been attacked by a doppelgänger of her husband, and – her voice just audible as blood presumably pools in her lungs – she calls out to her Google Home-like device to “call the police.” The device misunderstands her and switches from “Good Vibrations,” which has been playing in the scene, to N.W.A.’s “F k the Police.” Universal Pictures film music president Mike Knobloch told IndieWire that the scene could have gone a different way – the punchline was originally going to be a song by The Police. The movie was tested, though, and audiences responded to the N.W.A. song. “I think it became very clear at a critical point in the process that N.W.A was a much more satisfying choice,” Knobloch told IndieWire.19. Sweet Birthday Baby from Russian Doll: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Netflix)The first time Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia walked out of her friend’s bathroom during her weeknight birthday party, the peppy piano of Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” seemed like a fun retro soundtrack cue. The 20th or the 30th however, and the tune became a little more ominous — as did her pal Maxine’s (Greta Lee) slurred greeting of “sweet birthday babyyyy.” The call became a signature for the show, which was one of Netflix s biggest and most acclaimed hits (Certified Fresh at 96%) of the first half of 2019. 18. Kit Harington Discovers Dany s Fate in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch (2019) 100%(Photo by HBO)Emilia Clarke knew the fate of Daenerys Targaryen when she sat down for the table read of Game of Thrones’ final season, but many of her costars didn’t. Not even her on-screen beau/nephew Kit Harington, whose tearful reaction when he learned what would happen — and how he would be involved — was a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of season 8, which received a mixed reception from critics.17. Selina sells Gary Out in Veep: Season 7 (2019) 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/HBO)For seven seasons, HBO’s savage political satire Veep never let up in its pursuit of breaking our funny bones with vicious one-liners and some of the darkest comedy we’ve seen on American TV. In its final episode, though, it broke our hearts. The moment comes just before Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) takes the stage to accept the Democratic nomination for president, and, hugging her loyal bagman, Gary (Tony Hale), tells him she couldn’t have done it without him. She’s almost teary, and so are we, because we know what Gary doesn’t: Selina has made him the fall guy for nefarious goings on at the Meyer Foundation; a few minutes later, as she rouses the crowd with talk of sacrifice, we see FBI agents approaching Gary offstage. In an epilogue set 24 years later at Meyers’ funeral, a loyal-to-the-end Gary shows up, armed with lipstick in her favorite shade.16. Michael Marshall Sings San Francisco In The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) 92%The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot from a story by Talbot and the film’s star, Jimmie Fails, features some of the year’s most beautiful cinematography. But this tale of gentrification on the Bay also features one of the most incredible music moments, as the film essentially pauses for a rendition of Scott McKenzie’s 1967 “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers In Your Hair).” The song is given a new, jazzy spin as performed by Michael Marshall (he does the hook/chorus on “I Got 5 On It,” part of another great movie music moment this year) and with tuba courtesy of Norway’s Daniel Herskedal. The song features heavily in the trailer for the film above.15. The Vampire Council Convenes in What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94%FX’s TV version of the cult vampire movie was always in good hands coming from the film’s co-writer, co-director, and star Jemaine Clement, but things got extra-special when the comedy paid tribute to the vampire genre with a next-level star-studded seventh episode, directed by the film’s other star/co-writer/co-director, Taika Waititi. As Staten Island vampires Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja prepare to face the all-powerful vampire council and answer for their wrongdoing, prepare yourself for a cameo-fest that will blow your mind.14. WTF Did Goose Just Do?! in Captain Marvel (2019) 79%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Comic book fans might have known what was coming, but most moviegoers checking out Carol Danvers’ origin story were as shocked as Nick Fury when Goose the cat suddenly spewed out a bundle of alien tentacles and swallowed the Tesseract. Turns out Goose is a Flerken, a shape-shifting, egg-laying, tentacle-having species of alien with the capacity to house a pocket dimension inside themselves. Duh! In a movie full of scene-stealers – Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos – this feline sidekick stole the whole damn show.13. Whisperers massacre survivors in The Walking Dead: Season 9 (2018) 89%Samantha Morton s Alpha wants the survivors from Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom, and elsewhere to know where her boundaries end, so she mounts the (still jabbering) heads of 10 survivors on pikes and embeds them in the ground to mark the edge of the Whisperers’ territory. R.I.P. Addy, Rodney, Tammy Rose, Highwaymen Ozzy and Alek, DJ, Frankie, and, most shockingly, Henry, Enid, and Tara. The scene is a bloody tableau that Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Henry’s adoptive mom Carol (Melissa McBride), Siddiq (Avi Nash), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and fans won’t ever forget.12. Elton performs Your Song in Rocketman (2019) 89%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic is big on spectacle: the director’s staging of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” in a pub and carnival and of “Crocodile Rock” at the Troubadour left us with some of the most memorable screen images and sounds of the year. But it’s a quieter Rocketman scene that lingers longest. Sitting in his family’s living room, Elton (Taron Egerton) starts to put music to Bernie Taupin’s lyrics for “Your Song”; as the song takes shape, Taupin (Jamie Bell), as well as Elton’s mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) and grandmother (Gemma Jones) become transfixed. Egerton delivers show-stopping numbers throughout the Certified Fresh film, but this could be the scene they play come Oscar night.11. Andy Is Willing to Go the Distance in Netflix s Fyre (2019) 92% Andy King has seen all of your FYRE Fest memes — and he loves them! pic.twitter.com/mCNgDoHpjW Netflix (@netflix) January 29, 2019In the battle of this January’s Fyre Festival docs, it was Netflix’s Fyre that came out on top according to the Tomatometer, with a Certified Fresh score of 90%. While Hulu’s Fyre Fraud was no slouch at 78% on the Tomatometer, we think one key sequence may have given Netflix’s film the edge – and you know exactly what we’re talking about. With four 18-wheelers’ worth of Evian sitting in Customs, event producer Andy King confesses he agreed to “take one for the team” and perform fellatio on a government official to free the water. “I drank some mouthwash,” he tells us, before getting in his car fully prepared to do his duty for the fast-imploding festival. In the end King didn’t have to bend the knee – he says Customs released the water on the condition they would be paid soon after the festival ended – and things ended very happily for him. King’s story went viral, he became something of a folk hero, and has been fielding offers from networks for his own TV show.10. The Knife Fight in John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89%(Photo by © Lionsgate)In a franchise characterized by lethal stationery and unpleasant night-outs at the club, what makes a lowly, stabby knife fight stand out? First, it begins with a dash of humor: Keanu Reeves John Wick has been chased into an antiquated New York building, and as he and his assailants pummel each other, they take a second to pause and realize their surroundings. My God, it s full of knives! And then comes the audience wincing as sharp blades of every curve and edge are tossed up and down the hallway, mixed in with some trademark Wickian gun-fu, all shot in steady and crisp camera angles. Then, as Wick emerges victorious, but with one would-be assassin still alive, he hurls an axe in a comically large arc into the guy s skull – just for that last dash of mordant humor. The knife fight captures everything brutal and entertaining about the series.9. The Hot Priest Monologue in Fleabag, Season 2(Photo by Steve Schofield)This moving moment from the series finale from series creator, writer, and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge starts after Jake’s beautiful bassoon piece. The Priest – Andrew Scott, forever known as hot priest hereafter – delivers a speech about love at the wedding of Fleabag’s Dad (Bill Paterson) and godmother (Olivia Colman), starting with “Love is awful!” Claire (Sian Clifford) is alarmed: “There’s something wrong with your Priest.” Fleabag thinks maybe he’s talking about her, but it turns out, it’s a love letter to God — The Priest later dumps her at a bus stop. Check out the full speech: Love is awful. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish. Makes you creepy. Makes you obsessed with your hair. Makes you cruel. Makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love, then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot: It feeling right. When it feels right, it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is: When you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope. 8. Ducky and Bunny have a Plan in Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%(Photo by © Pixar, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Not to take anything away from Forky or Duke Caboom – both great additions to the Toy Story world, and both with their own fantastic moments in the series fourth film. But for pure scene-stealing skills, we re going all in on plush with Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. As the movie turns into pure heist flick, these two carnival toys kick into comedy high gear, and their one-note suggestions for how to steal a key provide for one of the most gut-busting running gags we ve ever seen in a Pixar film. Definitely stay for the credits. 7. Keanu Makes An Entrance in Always Be My Maybe (2019) 90%In the Year of Keanu Reeves, formerly known as 2019, there was just so much Keanu goodness going around – Duke “Yes I Can-ada!” Caboom; John Wick on a horse; the promise of next year’s Bill and Ted reboot. But perhaps our favorite Keanu moment came in Netflix’s Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe, in which Reeves makes one of the movies’ great entrances, strutting slow-mo into a fancy San Francisco restaurant, shaking hands and blowing kisses as Awolnation’s synthy Sails blasts on the soundtrack. It was the walk that launched a thousand memes, and Reeves performance as a cocky and surreal version of himself in the film is inspired.6. Barry Fights Feral Martial Arts Guru, Lily, in Barry: Season 2 (2019) 100%(Photo by Aaron Epstein/HBO)Sent to kill Ronny Proxin (Daniel Bernhardt), Bill Hader’s Barry has the misfortune of learning during that job that Ronny is a taekwondo champion. Barry manages to break the guy’s windpipe and appears to kill him – and that s when little Lily (Jessie Giacomazzi), Ronny’s daughter and also a martial arts master, comes home. The fight that ensues is the highlight of an incredible season of the Emmy-winning show. Feral with grief, Lily growls and shows off some supernatural leaping abilities. She finally subdues Barry by stabbing him repeatedly, then runs away. “What are you?” Fuches (an always hilarious Stephen Root) screams into the night when the petite warrior later takes a chunk out of his cheek with her teeth. The episode was directed by Hader.5. Reactor 4 explodes in Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (Photo by HBO)The story in HBO s acclaimed miniseries Cherobyl begins in Moscow on April 26, 1988, with the dramatic suicide of enfeebled Valery Legasov, played to perfection by Jared Harris (The Terror). In a recording, Legasov indicts Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter), the man who ran the room at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exactly two years earlier when its core exploded, and calls for his death. The explosion resulted in the worst man-made environmental disaster in history and in untold deaths — estimated in the thousands when reduced life expectancy is included. The story then flashes back to Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, in 1986 and takes viewers directly into the room following the explosion. Dyatlov embodies blind arrogance, as he denies eyewitness accounts that the core has exploded. “You’re confused,” he tells one of his men. “RBMK reactor cores don’t explode.” It turns out that under exactly the right circumstances — one having to do with cost cutting and infuriating incompetence — they do. This scene is where the horror story begins. (Check out our interview with series director Johan Renck.)4. Tony Vanquishes Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)Avengers: Endgame is chock full of moments that are like emotional kryptonite to Marvel fans (hello, mixed media metaphors!). But you re going to need Doctor Strange doing magic hand jazz to hold back the onslaught of tears most of us felt when Tony Stark snapped his fingers as the Infinity Stones were infused into his Iron Man armor, sending Thanos back to the dust from whence he came, and frying himself in the process. It s a pulverizing moment coming at the end of a very long battle – or the end of a very long movie, or the end of a very long series depending on how you look at it – made all the more devastating with the funeral and reunion that immediately follows it. Or how about the moment preceding the snap, when Stark looks straight into the purple fiend s eyes and proclaims, I am Iron Man ? It s all a whirling carousel of rising intensity and action, and that snap really ties it all together.3. A Trumpet and a Verdict in When They See Us: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us is a gripping and harrowing journey through the darkest corners of the criminal justice system: from bent investigations and interrogations to heavily weighted legal proceedings to the corruption and horrors of the prison system and finally the way that the label of “prisoner” sticks hard in a post-prison life. The four-part retelling of the eventually overturned rape and assault convictions of the so-called Central Park Five – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and Raymond Santana – is stacked with moments that shock, anger, and move, but there’s one image that lingers perhaps more than any other (or anything else we’ve seen on TV this year). In the closing moments of episode 2, as the boys are read their guilty verdicts, DuVernay cuts to Richardson (played by Asante Blackk) sitting in the middle of a Harlem street and raising his trumpet to his lips, a pair of handcuffs dangling from his left wrist. Richardson plays a few tortured notes before we cut back to court to see him, wide-eyed in terror and shock, lower his head, closing out the episode.2. Arya Kills the Night King in Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%(Photo by HBO)The Stark family’s own Faceless (Wo)Man schools us on what that whole Braavos excursion was for: to wield an ancient Valyrian-steel dagger and kill the Game of Thrones villain many viewers thought was destined to face Jon “Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name” Snow in his final confrontation. But for every Jon Snow fan whining about how the Night King was his to kill, there’s an Arya Stark fan fist-pumping because the gal has mad skills. Yes, even silently stalking her prey and becoming virtually invisible when the undead masses are focused on their leader as he readies a death blow against the No. 1 target on his hit list, the Three-Eyed Raven. Stealthy assassin Arya would not let her brother go out like that.1. Avengers Assemble! from Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios / )Think cutting off Avengers assemble mid-line at the end of Age of Ultron was a major blockbuster tease for MCU fans? They d only been waiting since 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out – diehard comic book fans have been anticipating to hear the famous battle cry on the big screen since the 60s. And everybody got what they came for in the fan service fantasia that is Avengers: Endgame. During the climatic battle, as Captain America tightens his shield, standing alone against Thanos and his cosmic hordes, Infinity War s fallen come rushing out of the portals. As the triumphant music swells, the heroes stand in unison, awaiting Cap s command, which comes softly growled, with the impact of destiny fulfilled at last. We re not digging ditches, we re not doing manual labor, but we get paid to watch bad movies. I found out particularly when I started getting recognized from being on television and people would stop me and say, You got the best job in the world. I said, Well, it s a great job, but you know, some days it feels like a job. Then people s eyes glaze over. When you get paid to watch movies, no one wants to hear complaints, and I get that.What do you think makes a good movie?They say a smart person can hold two opposing thoughts in their mind at the same time. No butter.When reviewing, do you go in cold?The only way I go. I actually studiously avoid reading or seeing anything about a movie. I don t even watch the trailers. I don t write lengthy reviews, so I find as long as I log-in either that night or the next morning when I get home, that does it for me.What is your personal record for most movies watched in a day?Seven. 华体会在线登录 Another Sundance Film Festival is done and dusted and it s been unlike any other previous year. With several high dollar acquisitions – Amazon alone spent nearly million on new titles – much of what we saw in Utah will make its way to theaters this year. If you have been following along with our Sundance Scorecard, which shows Tomatometer scores for any Sundance title that got one after 5 reviews, you ll notice critics were loving Shia LaBeouf’s Honey Boy, Jennifer Kent’s Babadook follow-up The Nightingale, Lulu Wang’s Awkwafina-led dramedy The Farewell, and Mindy Kaling s Late Night. Only four of the 2018 Sundance films made it to the Oscars this year, but chances are we will be talking about at least one of the actors from the 2019 slate come awards time next year. And if the Academy doesn’t nominate one of our favorites? We might still be talking about it anyway (*cough* Toni Collette was robbed).Park City is the place for established stars to break from their typecast molds and give us something completely new. Pete Davidson, Armie Hammer, Awkwafina, and Octavia Spencer shook things up at this year s festival, while veterans like Emma Thompson reminded us of why we love them. These are our favorite performances from Sundance 2019.Awkwafina, Aoi Mizuhara, Diana Lin, Shuzhen Zhou in The Farewell (2019) 97%(Photo by Courtesy the Sundance Institute)In The Farewell, Awkwafina takes her first dramatic turn and although the Crazy Rich Asians star feared she wouldn t be able cry on cue, her muted performance repeatedly brought us to tears. The premise – a family organizes a fake wedding to gather everyone together following the grandmother’s terminal diagnosis (which she does not know about) – is tailor made for tearjerking dramedy, and Lulu Wang’s feature debut had critics laughing through their sobs. Awkwafina plays the ‘straight man,’ while the rest of the cast provides the laughs: Mizuhara as an trepidatious Japanese bride, Lin as a stern Chinese-American mother, and Zhou as the energetic grandmother oblivious to her family s trickery. We enjoyed the men of The Farewell, too, but the women – especially Zhou – give the film its humor and heart.Octavia Spencer in Luce (2019) 90%(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)In Luce, a former African child soldier turned model U.S. student is cast in an entirely new light when he submits a disturbing essay for a school project and his teacher, played by Spencer, deputizes herself as the one to discover the truth – by any means necessary. Spencer manifests the weight of cultural expectations in the role of her career. The taut physiological drama, adapted from J.C. Lee s play, places the weight of African-American ascension upon the shoulders of our eponymous lead and as the woman who chooses to spar with him, Spencer is defiant and vulnerable. She shares scenes with Kelvin Harrison Jr. (as Luce) involving thought-provocative dialogue that pose complex questions about race and expectations, and offers few simplistic answers. Is Spencer s Miss Wilson a dedicated teacher raising valid concerns after troubling warning signs? Or is she an overbearing self-appointed investigator desperately trying to find evidence to support her pre-determinations? We left Luce unable to say one way or the other, but convinced this was an exceptional addition to an already impressive career for Spencer.Geraldine Viswanathan in Hala (2019) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Parrish Lewis)After the Blockers premiere in April 18 at SXSW we expected great things from Geraldine Viswanathan. The hands-down standout from the teen sex comedy, Viswanathan headed to Park City in the title role of Minhal Baig’s debut film Hala, the intimate story of a teenage girl who is struggling to find balance as a Pakistani teen living in America raised in a strict Muslim household. Viswanathan once again shows her comedic chops as the sarcastic first-generation immigrant, but also thrives when placed squarely against her competing ideologies. In the seams of both is where her character eventually finds herself. The film s portrayal of a teen struggling with her disapproving mother, played against an exploration of sex, art, and religion, is not exactly groundbreaking, but it is refreshing to see it from a Muslim teenager s perspective. Viswanathan s acting and Baig s semi-autobiographical script give life and authenticity to a character we don’t often see represented on screen.Lupita Nyong’o in Little Monsters (2019) 79%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Ben King)Between this and Us, Lupita Nyong’o is going all in for horror in 2019. In Little Monsters, she plays a school teacher at an Australian elementary school who is on a field trip when a military accident unleashes a horde of zombies; she and the slacker uncle of one of her students are the only adults who can protect the kids against the brain-eaters. Trapped in a farm-themed amusement park with a wannabe musician and a degenerate children’s television host (Josh Gad), Nyong’o is the emotional anchor and heart of the film. This Aussie Shaun of the Dead fashions Nyong o as a mix of that film s Shaun and Walking Dead favorite Michonne’s badassness, and the Black Panther actress shows off some spectacular zombie-slaying and ukulele-playing skills: trust us when we say “Shake It Off” will never sound the same again.Jillian Bell and Utkarsh Ambudkar Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) 88%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Jon Pack)Brittany ran the marathon, but Jillian Bell stole the show. Ever since the first season of Workaholics, we have been cracking up from the comedienne’s antics and broad humor. Bell gives a star-making performance as Brittany, an overweight twentysomething who gets a wake-up call when a bogus doctor’s visit to score Adderall results in warnings about her health and wellbeing. With every mile she runs in preparation for the New York Marathon, we watch Britanny make herself over, and by the end, all of us are ready to cheer her to the finish line. While training for the marathon, she meets Jern, played by Utkarsh Ambudkar, and while we don’t want to give too much away, the verbal sparring between these two provides some of the biggest laughs in the film. Not saying that everyone will run a marathon after watching it, but plenty will want to give it a try.Noah Jupe in Honey Boy (2019) 94%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Natasha Braier)Noah Jupe has quietly become one of the most acclaimed child actors in Hollywood. At only 13, he has starred in two bona fide hits (A Quiet Place and Wonder) and racked up stellar reviews for his work. Honey Boy is about to take him to the next level. Shia LaBeouf’s semi-autobiographical retelling of his tumultuous childhood has the young Brit playing LaBeouf in his formative years, while Boy Erased actor Lucas Hedges plays the adult version in Alma Har el s first narrative feature. Hedges provides the contemporary context, but much of the narrative rests entirely on Jupe’s teenaged shoulders – and he goes toe-to-toe with LaBeouf, who plays a version of his own father. More than a vanity project, Honey Boy is a smart and candid depiction of a former child star’s bad behavior and damaged childhood with an incredibly gifted young performer at its center.Emma Thompson in Late Night (2019) 79%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Emily Aragones)Dame Emma Thompson as a highbrow late-night talk show host is the kind of genius casting that you didn’t know you needed in your life. Screenwriter and co-star Mindy Kaling said that she wrote Thompson’s part as a piece of fan fiction, and the result is a Dame Emma fangirl’s dream come true. Witty, sarcastic, brilliant – the British thespian here is part Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, part David Letterman. Kaling plays the wide-eyed new writer who desperately wants to win her boss’s affection, and Thompson s constant dismissal of her eternal cheerfulness is side-splittingly funny. More than just an ‘Iron Lady,’ Thompson also shows signs of tenderness behind the derision in this uncynical crowdpleaser. Sold to Amazon for a whopping million, Late Night looks to run The Big Sick’s playbook to similar box office success and maybe some award buzz for our Dame.Pete Davidson in Big Time Adolescence (2019) 85%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute )It’s fair to say going into Sundance that we did not think that SNL s Pete Davidson would make this list. But in Big Time Adolescence, Davidson plays the worst version of his assumed identity and shows real range. Another tale of arrested development, Big Time Adolescence is about a drug-addled man child – Davidson s Zeke – who befriends the only person who still thinks he’s cool, his ex-girlfriend’s teenage brother. Picture James Franco’s Daniel from Freaks and Geeks with tattoos, dyed blonde hair, and less charm. The predictable antics ensue, and his young protégé Mo (Griffin Glick) begins to see the cracks in the bravado and realizes that Zeke’s laid-back persona is just a mask for his perpetual f up status. Davidson is a brilliant comedic actor, and his timing is never off beat in the kind of role that Saturday Night Live players have often used to catapult to superstardom. Charismatic, hilarious, and at times painful to watch, the actor shows what he is capable of doing and we re intrigued to see what he does next.Armie Hammer in Wounds (2019) 47%Of all the big departure performances at this year’s festival, Armie Hammer’s turn in Wounds was the most dramatic. In Babak Anvari’s follow-up to Under the Shadow, Hammer plays Will, an apathetic alcoholic bartender who picks up a lost cellphone, unlocks it, and gets his life changed forever. In really gnarly ways. Light years away from anything else he’s done, Hammer is a hulking, sweaty, paranoid mess in this genuinely terrifying horror thriller. At 69% on the Tomatometer, reactions to the film have been mixed overall, but praise for Hammer has been universal. His first dip into horror sees the Call Me By Your Name star creeping everyone out and ditching his dreamboat persona for cockroaches and gore.
