3. KUMAIL NANJIANI CONFIRMS HE S GETTING A BIG BOLLYWOOD DANCE SEQUENCE IN MARVEL S ETERNALS(Photo by Nicole Rivelli/©Lionsgate)Although anyone who s familiar with Bollywood could have predicted it, many audiences were probably surprised when eventual Academy Award Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire ended with a big Bollywood-style musical dance sequence. Kumail Nanjiani confirmed this week that his upcoming big superhero movie, Marvel s Eternals (11/6/2020), will itself also have a big Bollywood-style musical number featuring about 50 singers and dancers. The set up for the sequence will be that Nanjiani s character, Kingo, will hide himself in modern human society by becoming a Bollywood movie star. The direct quote from Nanjiani was this: So I become a Bollywood movie star; that’s my secret identity. We’re supposed to keep quiet, and I’ve become the biggest Bollywood movie star. Kumail Nanjiani s other Eternals co-stars will include Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari, the MCU s first deaf superhero), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos, the MCU s first gay superhero), Gemma Chan (Sersi), and Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden (Ikaris) and Kit Harrington (Dane Whitman, AKA the Black Knight). In related news, Christian Bale has been confirmed as playing the villain in next year s Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021 .4. JON HAMM REPLACING JOSH BROLIN IN STEVEN SODERBERGH S KILL SWITCH(Photo by Netflix)As both traditional television networks and expanding streaming services continue to attract movie stars to work on series, it s becoming something of a trend that stars have to drop out of projects not because of other feature films, but because of TV. The latest example of that is Josh Brolin, who had been expected to star in director Steven Soderbergh s (Contagion, Magic Mike, Ocean s Eleven) next film, called Kill Switch. Instead, it will be former Mad Men star Jon Hamm who will take that role, as a cop who is trying to find a trio of criminals who carry out a home invasion, only to wonder if they’ve been double-crossed when the job goes sideways. Jon Hamm s co-stars in Kill Switch will include Marvel stars Don Cheadle (War Machine) and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), as well as Cedric the Entertainer, who also signed on this week.

When the Emmy nominations are announced on Tuesday, July 16, there are some names and series that will definitely be on the list: Game of Thrones, Veep, and Chernobyl (and plenty more series and miniseries from other networks) are among the frontrunners. But in a world where around 500 scripted series are set to air in 2019, there s a lot of excellent TV out there that will unfortunately not be recognized by the Television Academy. The Rotten Tomatoes staff wanted to make sure to recognize some of our favorite series and stars that might not necessarily receive a nod come Tuesday, so read on for our list of Emmy underdogs we re rooting for.Superstore 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesOver the last four years Superstore has quietly established itself as one of network televisions’ best offerings. It’s the rare show that can successfully tackle a wide-array of hot-button issues — from identity politics to immigration and every robot-trying-to-take-our-jobs in-between — while consistently providing full-belly laughs. The season four finale alone is a masterclass in finding levity in impossible situations. It also features one of TV s most exceptional (and insanely-likeable) ensembles, who vibe so well off of one another that it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “work family.” It’s smart, insightful, ridiculously funny, and absolutely worthy of awards consideration. – Haña Lucero-ColinBroad City 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesBelieve it or not, Comedy Central’s ode to female friendship from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson has never been nominated for an Emmy, despite its critical success — four of its five seasons are Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer (and the first is CF at a not-too-shabby 96%). Broad City has paved the way for plenty of female-fronted comedies currently on TV, like Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix s animated Tuca Bertie, and Pop TV’s just-premiered Florida Girls — so honoring the groundbreaking sitcom in its fifth and final season would be a fitting end for the series. – Jean BentleyTuca & Bertie 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTuca Bertie is for those wondering how their lives will go on after the end of Broad City. Creator Lisa Hanawalt’s buddy comedy goes to some pretty heavy places, but with a more surreal and absurdist bent. There’s an array of talented actors voicing the supporting characters (Steven Yeun! Richard E. Grant! Isabella Rossellini!), but Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish really bring the endearing, sloppy charm of these characters to life. An Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nom for either would be awesome, but the show’s adult themes and newness probably won’t work in its favor. – Sara AtaiiyanOne Day at a Time 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTalk about a Cinderella story. Imagine this: The critically acclaimed sitcom reboot that Netflix axed following its third season, but which — after a long fan campaign — was saved by Pop, takes home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Gods, wherever you are: Make it happen. It would be a miracle of course, but it would be a well-deserved one. One Day at A Time, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce and executive produced by Norman Lear, has shown that the multi-camera sitcom can still be hilarious, heartfelt, and just as edgy as many of the rougher-edged comedies on streaming and cable. The setup is simple — a working-class Cuban-American family lives in an apartment building where they are friendly with their hipster landlord — but the character arcs and writing are anything but. Watch how skillfully the showrunners blend complex narratives about immigration and gentrification into the laughs, and how organically season-long storylines coalesce. It’s smart, underappreciated stuff. As are the performances, particularly from Justina Machado as the mother trying to keep everything together and Rita Moreno as the scene-stealing live-in grandma, Lydia. – Joel MearesBoJack Horseman 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesSeason 5 gave Bojack his Horseman-aissance after being cast in an edgy TV show. We also got a deeper look at supporting characters Diane, Princess Carolyn, and everyone’s favorite asexual, Todd. Maybe it’s because of and not despite the fact that it’s a cartoon that allows the series to deal so astutely with questions about what it means to be person who’s trying to be better, and the #MeToo movement. – AtaiiyanFleabag 100%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesPhoebe Waller-Bridge is seemingly a lock for a comedy actress nomination, but with the comedy series category overstuffed with hilarious options, we’re unsure if this member of our exclusive 100% club is an underdog or a frontrunner. Look at the contenders: Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, The Kominsky Method, The Good Place, GLOW, Russian Doll, black-ish, Schitt s Creek, Better Things, and on. What’s a Fleabag got to do to get some recognition around here? – Debbie DayThe Good Fight 95%, Outstanding Drama SeriesThis tight and punchy spin-off to The Good Wife is the single best reason to subscribe to CBS All Access (and there are a bunch of very good reasons its competing against, with The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: Discovery available on the streaming service). The super-smart and sometimes surreal legal drama offers fascinating cases — many of which touch on “big issues” in tech and politics in small and intimate ways — and a compelling crew to tackle them. Chief among that crew is Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski, who deserves her Emmy, now!), who featured in The Good Wife, and she’s well-matched by rising star and new mom Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), senior partner Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), and the scandal-hounded young Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who’s taken a liking to Fentanyl lollipops in season 3. The Good Fight deserves its nomination not just for being the smartest legal drama out there, but for being one of the few shows on TV right now to grapple with — and laugh at — some of the meatiest issues in American politics, law, and society. – MearesBusy Tonight , Outstanding Variety Talk SeriesBusy Philipps translated her personable, intimate online presence into a TV show that felt more like eavesdropping on friends hanging out than a traditional late-night series, which made Busy Tonight’s untimely cancellation sting a little bit more. The actress proved to be both a likable and skilled host, and her accomplishments deserve to be recognized. – BentleyEmmy Rossum, Shameless 82%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesFor years Emmy Rossum has been turning in some of the best work of her expansive career on Shameless, and for years the TV Academy has been ignoring her in favor of William H. Macy’s much showier role as the deadbeat patriarch of a large Chicago family. But Rossum’s performance as the eldest child keeping her siblings together as they struggle to keep their heads above water is at times hilarious and heartbreaking, and what better way to repent for their years of ignorance than by the Academy recognizing her work in her final season on the show? – BentleyCatherine O’Hara, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesCatherine O’Hara has never won an Emmy award for acting, and that, in and of itself, is criminal. O’Hara, who currently stars as matriarch Moira Rose on Canadian Pop TV sensation Schitt’s Creek is as good as it gets. Schitt’s Creek itself deserves all the awards. From the writing to the acting to hair and makeup, the series is genuinely one of the greatest shows to ever hit the small screen, but what O’Hara brings to Moira makes the character so special and the actress so deserving. She has given an unlikable person a depth and a growth that is unseen in on television today. She is eccentric, she is quick-witted, she is wearing a fabulous wig, and she truly deserves to be in the conversation for best actress in a comedy series. – Zoey MooreSuranne Jones, Gentleman Jack 90%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama SeriesNot content to simply act the role, Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones paints her worldly, outsider character, Anne Lister, with bold strokes into otherwise placid scenes of lush 19th–century West Yorkshire, England. When she takes on local graft, she bares her teeth with such palpable menace that in her more vulnerable moments — as when she confronts a skittish lover — her tears break hearts. But in a category stuffed with meaty dramatic roles performed by names more familiar to voters, Jones, like her Lister, seems an upstart with an uncertain fate. – DayStephan James, Homecoming 78%, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama SeriesSam Esmail’s Homecoming was one of the best reviewed series of 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. This taut adaptation of the beloved narrative podcast played out like 11 little shots of Hitchcock — a slow burn that caught fire as the story evolved, back and forth through time, with twists upon twists and some of the finest performances of the year. Julia Roberts has been rightly lauded for her put-upon Heidi Bergman, and Bobby Cannavale gives excellent Cannavalian obnoxiousness as Colin Belfast. But Stephan James, as military veteran Walter Cruz, gives what could be a pretty cold affair its warmth and heart and makes that final diner scene so damn devastating. – MearesAnnie Murphy, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesYes, Twitter, we know, and we agree: Catherine O’Hara is everything in Schitt’s Creek, and the fact that she doesn’t have four Emmys on a shelf somewhere right next to a collection of Moira Rose wigs is some sort of crime against comedy. But let’s shine equal light on Annie Murphy, who plays the younger socialite-in-the-sticks, Alexis Rose, in the Canadian series. It’s the less showy role — no wigs, no accent — but it’s also stealthily a bit of genius. Murphy plays a ditzy rich girl mid-awakening and every season her characterization deepens. She still gets to nail those insane Alexis lines alluding to a wild past of kidnappings, engagements, and foreign dignitaries, and put out the occasional puppy-dog whine. But she’s also increasingly real, grounded, drawing us into her increasingly tender relationships with her family and Ted. David, giver her an Emmy nom, like, now! – MearesLike this? Adjusted Score: -1% Critics Consensus: Anchored by the incomparable Patrick Stewart, Picard departs from standard Starfleet protocol with a slower, serialized story, but like all great Star Trek it tackles timely themes with grace and makes for an exciting push further into the final frontier.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Irish actor Andrew Scott is arguably most recognizable to U.S. audiences for malevolent characters: classic literary villain Professor Moriarty opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in TV s Sherlock, as cruel psychiatrist Dr. Addison Bennet in Alice Through the Looking Glass, and as duplicitous government agent C in James Bond film Spectre. So seeing Scott turn up as a priest in Amazon series Fleabag understandably may result in immediate suspicion of the character. The series history of revealing unexpected core character flaws might also set viewers expectation levels to yellow ― exercise caution ― when it comes to investing in this new player on Fleabag s scene. Plus: Fleabag. It s original and audacious storytelling, Scott says of the series created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a star rapidly ascending with a scene-stealing turn as the voice of robot L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story and as executive producer and creator of award-winning BBC America series Killing Eve. Waller-Bridge was also tapped by Bond himself, Daniel Craig, to inject her distinctive comedic voice into the script of the upcoming film from director Cary Fukunaga.Scott this week also appeared — ranting with a gun — in the first trailer for season 5 of Netflix sci-fi anthology hit Black Mirror. We re eager to find out what delirium awaits us there, but in the meantime, we re savoring his performance in Fleabag season 2, which is reliably unexpected. The season is Certified Fresh at 100% with 43 reviews at publication and is being lauded by critics with lines like:  A portrait of grief, fear, and love that s startling, painful, achingly funny, unbearably sexy, pretty much perfect, and somehow better than the first season. It is a marvel. It should not exist. (Allison Shoemaker, RogerEbert.com).We spoke to Scott about these strange, beautiful, tragic, hilarious sketches of humanity and what it was like to inhabit one of them.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Debbie Day for Rotten Tomatoes: Throughout the season, as a viewer, I think you keep asking yourself, “Is this love or is this insanity?”Scott: I think both those things can exist at the same time. (Laughs). I think a lot of the time, people s experiences of love are exactly that. I think that question, “Is this love or is this insanity?,” can nearly be applied to everything or relationship, because it is insane to go through that experience — it s insane. That s exactly it. As the Priest says in that sermon (in the series): It s this extraordinary thing, it makes you crazy, and makes you do all these things that you never imagined you would be, both good and bad. I think Phoebe s great talent is to be able to hold two things in exactly the same thing. I love the fact that it s funny and tragic at the same time. I like that the idea of being vulnerable and being powerful exists in the same scene. It s all the things it s very fluid, and I think that s why people have responded to it so much, that s what makes such great television, is that feeling of nuance, because the lack of nuance is the death of great art.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)After season 1, I think viewers are hoping for some redemption for Fleabag, and at the beginning of the new season, here s this priest and ― whether you believe or not ― you may hope that she finds something to hold on to, but she chooses the same sort of destructive path.Scott: You think it s destructive?I think she makes another bad choice for herself. You want to believe in love, and you want to believe that people will choose love, but when you get involved with someone who s not really available ―Scott: Yeah.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)How did you approach your character, seeing this dynamic in the scripts? What did you think of him at first when you read it?Scott: We talked about, when we first spoke about this relationship between the two of them, was how do you play love, and what should we expect from our television characters? And there s not one of us who have not made bad choices ― I e

King of the Crop: Fantastic Beasts Wins Weekend But Signals Trouble Ahead(Photo by Warner Bros)Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the box office this weekend easily, but that s about the only domestic victory the film can claim. It can’t even boast having the best start of the 2018 holiday season so far, falling behind The Grinch’s .5 million last week. By the time the final estimates come out it may not even be a Top 25 November opening. (However, it’s international numbers are more than solid with a worldwide tally of 3 million just this weekend.)The million opening is the lowest in the entire Harry Potter franchise. The previous low: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with .4 million. Before that it was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though that posted the second-highest multiple of the series with a 3.78x.Fantastic Beasts is scheduled to be a five-part series, and critics are bailing on just the second movie. Will audiences? Anything less than 4 million domestic (likely) equals declining territory. And less than 0 million domestic will be a major disappointment for WB. So is it the international haul that truly matters? Like the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, American audiences may have grown weary, but as long coffers fill overseas, we will see more of them yet.Rotten Returns: Instant Family Continues Streak of Mark Wahlbombs(Photo by Paramount)Paramount got strong reviews from critics for Mark Wahlberg-starring Instant Family, but the million production from Sean Anders did not have that sweet Daddy’s Home connection with Will Ferrell. Confident that audiences would be looking for a potential feel-good film for the holidays, the studio moved the film up from February into this weekend and was rewarded with just .5 million. Since 1990 there have been a dozen films that have started between .7-.7 million, and only three of them have reached million: The Jackal (1997), Horrible Bosses 2, and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which benefited from an awards run. If word-of-mouth cannot build Instant Family this will go down as the seventh straight film that Mark Wahlberg has headlined that has ended up on the losing side of its budget. Steve McQueen’s Widows seemingly is in the same boat as Instant Family with just a .3 million opening and million budget. But as a potential awards player, there is a room for longevity.Top Ten and Beyond: Grinch Eyes Seasonal High, No Box Office Rhapsody For Adult Fare(Photo by © 20th Century Fox)Illumination’s animated adaptation of The Grinch finds itself in a pretty good position, pulling ahead of The Lorax (also from Illumination) with a 10-day gross of 6.5 million. That puts The Grinch at a total end estimate in the 0-0 million range. Meanwhile, another box office song going on: Bohemian Rhapsody, which looks to end in 0 million range. It is over 4 million worldwide to date, making the film a tremendous success for Fox.Non-Grinch, not-Queen movies have less to sing about. With respective budgets of and million, Overlord and The Girl In the Spider s Web are at a mere .7 and .2 million. The new Dragon Tattoo Story is only at million worldwide. Overlord is not much better at million, but it is safe to say we have have seen the last of Lisbeth Salander on the big screen. Disney and theaters are bailing fast on another overpriced failure: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ( million domestic, 6 million worldwide against a0 million budget), which vanished from over 1,100 theaters in just its third weekend.Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate had the best per-theater-average of the weekend, with ,000 in four theaters, though it is not much of a number to crow about. Another awards hopeful, Green Book, played 25 theaters, driving up 2k before it will expand into over 1,000 on Wednesday. For the MST3kers out there, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie opened in 26 theaters to 6k. (Enjoy the new season on Netflix this Wednesday!)

For the completionist s sake, we re also including sequels like 102 Dalmatians in this list, and well as movies whose stories haven t necessarily been told before, but which re-purpose old animated characters, like Christopher Robin. We re also including a few remakes from the 1990s which predate the current pile-on. In 2019 alone, there were five releases: Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Lady and the Tramp. Mary Poppins Returns has been showered with love on social media following the movie’s premiere last night, and while there were some critics for whom the spoonful of sugar wasn t quite sweet enough, everyone agrees that Emily Blunt is wonderful in the title role. Not only does she do the iconic character justice, but she’s looking to follow original Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews to Oscar recognition (but can she win, too?). Overall, the long-awaited sequel may not work for absolutely everybody, but in addition to awards favor, it’s sure to be a huge hit with many. Here’s the first wave of critical buzz, as drawn from Twitter reactions, on Mary Poppins Returns:Is the sequel worth the wait?I loved Mary Poppins Returns! Erik Davis, FandangoHow does it compare to the original? It felt SO similar to the original. New songs, better technology, same story and themes. I definitely recommend it, though.  Germain Lussier, io9This isn t trying to be Creed or Rocky Balboa; it s aimed squarely at Rocky II: The first one, again effect.  Bob Chipman, Geek.comIt s faithful to the original without being beholden to it. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsThe movie just attempts to recreate too much of the original and totally fails to recapture its magic. The Best Action Movies of 2019What is the state of the action movie in 2019? You could say they ve never been stronger: They generate all the hype and they break all the records – we just call them superhero movies these days. But for this guide to the best action movies of 2019, we stick with a more pure strain of action filmmaking, whose lineage you can trace back to the 80s and early 90s heyday. It s a world of tough guys (Shaft) and tougher women (Anna), of martial artists (Shadow), vigilantes (Miss Bala), and assassins (John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum). In deciding what qualifies as an action movie, we not only left those newfangled superhero movies to mingle with their own crowd, but the same went for genre hybrids like Alita: Battle Angel, which will go into the best sci-fi movies of 2019 list, launching next week. Otherwise, the action movie needed only to cross a 20-review threshold to be included in this guide, which ranks the best alongside the worst. And now with more high-adrenaline pleasures like Gemini Man, Angel Has Fallen, Rambo: Last Blood hitting theaters, take a look back with a blast from the recent past with the best (and worst!) action movies of 2019 so far!Updated 11/25: 21 BridgesBest Movies of 2019 | Best Horror Movies of 2019Best Comedies of 2019 | Best Sci-Fi Movies of 2019Best Action Movies of 2019

Talking to the actor, you could be mistaken for thinking he was in his own blissful retirement phase. Sitting at a kitchen table, framed by bottles of his Two Paddocks wine and occasionally looking out a window to check on the animals his Twitter followers have become familiar with from videos posted during the pandemic – a hen named Kate Winslet, young calf Laura Dern, her black-and-white mom Helena Bonham Carter, and other farm favorites named after his famous friends – Neill looks very chill as he churns charmingly through a roster of press interviews. But that calm, country-boy exterior belies the fact that he’s at one of the busiest and most exciting points in his career: There’s Rams, upcoming TV series Invasion, and, of course, Jurassic World: Dominion, which he shot last year under strict COVID-safe conditions, and which saw him reunite with Dern (the human, not calf) and Jeff Goldblum.Ahead of Rams’ U.S. release, Neill spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about balancing darkness and laughs, reuniting with his Jurassic Park co-stars and the very “different” world we can expect from the franchise’s sixth film, and why people might want to give the franchise’s oft-maligned and Rotten third film – and the Neill-starring cult favorite, Event Horizon – a second chance.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: I think when people see your character in this film – a sort of grumpy, quiet farmer – they will draw a lot of connections to your life on the farm and some of the more stoic characters you ve played in the past. What was it about this character and this story that really appealed to you and made you want to do the film?Sam Neill: Look, I took it on with reluctance because it does have its genesis in an Icelandic film of the same name. I didn t really want to do the remake. It was also the fourth film back-to-back I did that year – we were shooting this just over two years ago – and I also thought, Oh God, that s just too much. I just want a break.”But then when I talked to Jeremy [Sims, the film’s director] and I read the script, I realized actually it was going to be an entirely different film and, therefore, it was well worth considering. When I read the script I thought, Oh, I think I really should do this, because I felt an uplift after I d finished it. And I m not sure what your audience felt, but it s not a “feel-good film,” it s a feel-better film. People feel better when they ve seen it. I think that s quite a gift. I can t quite explain why that is, but it s optimistic. And speaking of Rotten Tomatoes, I ve been combing through [the website], because I m in the Academy….(Photo by David Dare Parker)Uh, oh. This part of the interview. Neill: [Laughs] So I started with Rotten Tomatoes and have gone through working backwards from the hundred-out-of-one-hundreds. And there s a lot of good material there, but there s also quite a lot of rather depressing material and a lot of miserable stuff. They’re very good films, but you go, Oh God, no. Please, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. I think [Rams] is exceptional in that it s not one of those.I saw it at a theater during the day with an older audience and they loved it. [Note: The writer is currently in Australia, where theaters are open]. But it struck me when thinking about feel-good vs. feel-better, that a lot of Australian comedies or dramedies do blend those laughs and that humanity with some really dark, tragic elements. You think about classics like Muriel s Wedding and some of the things that happened in that movie. Do you think that darkness is particular to Australian and New Zealand comedies? Or am I reaching there?Neill: Yeah, that may be a reach. I don t think it s unique to us. I was thinking about Hunt for the Wilderpeople – and I played a grumpy old guy in that as well – but Wilderpeople has dark moments, and had very sad things. When the nicest person in the film dies early on in the film, and then the nicest dog dies, these are tough moments, but also reflective of life. There s no such thing as a rom-com in real life, is there? Life is not a rom-com. It never is.(Photo by © The Orchard /Courtesy Everett Collection)Your Twitter feed feels like a rom-com, sometimes, between you and the animals at your farm. You seem determined to give people a piece of joy in their day on social media. What’s the impetus behind posting these videos of you and your animals, or you and your just-made jam or playing ukulele?Neill: I don t know if it s that deliberate, really. I m partly trying to cheer myself up. We ve also had some pretty dark moments in this last year – really dark. And I think apart from the fact that a lot of the world is in dire danger at the moment, I think the human condition has turned into one of low-level anxiety, low-level depression, if not high-level depression. Most of the people I know have really struggled in the last year or so, and I m not alone in that. I find I just have to pick up my ukulele, when I can find it, and give it a strum or two, and I feel better. If I can make one or two other people feel slightly better, then I ve done something good that day. But, no, I don t have any particular mission or anything. It s never been a deliberate course. It just organically happened this year, and it was very diverting in lockdown to make those little Cinema Quarantino films, because I found that all my friends, the ones that could be bothered to get out of the chair and do something, were really looking for something to do. [Editor’s note: Sam teamed up with celebrity friends to film shorts he released on Twitter, including one hilarious short featuring Helena Bonham Carter as a jealous and foul-mouthed iPhone.]They were very diverting. And the idea was that they would be badly made good little films, where no one gives a f k about continuity. Someone put it rather inconveniently recently that I think it s 50 years now that I ve been on celluloid in one way or another. So, my whole life has been circumscribed by continuity. It s good to abandon continuity, throw the bloody thing out the window.

Ghcxuf Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: We chatted about Waves while you promoted It Comes At Night, and you said it was a love story. Having seen the film, I ve got to ask, how is this a love story? Trey Edward Shults: It is a love story. I mean, there are love stories in it, no?Yes, but it s certainly not a rom-com or a romantic drama. Yes, but familial love is a kind of love, no? Love is the thing connecting everything in the movie. It s romantic love. It s the love of a brother and sister. It s the love of your partner. It s the love of parents and children. I think, too, with the last movie, like you said, it was so brooding. If anything, death was the center of that, and then this movie, it was like life and love. It was about the positive. I know the movie gets very dark, but I wanted to show the end of a relationship and the beginning of one, but then link it through familial love. That s what s running through it. It s all very broad, abstract stuff. I don t know if I can be more specific. It s also a hard movie to talk about without spoiling.Agreed. So let s talk about the casting, particularly Sterling K. Brown, because he s kind of got the world at his feet, right?Honestly, regarding Sterling, it was literally a dream come true to have him in this movie. I can t imagine anyone else besides Sterling playing this part. I didn t know Sterling s work until The People v. O.J. Simpson and he blew my mind. I ve been following him ever since, but following him as a human being – his interviews, the way he talks. He s a magical human being and a magical presence. It was also crazy when he came on [to the film]. It started with Kelvin and then came Lucas [Hedges], then Alexa [Demie] and Taylor, and then it kept going. The hardest thing was working out Sterling s schedule with This Is Us. We set it up to where we shifted our whole work week. We worked Saturday to Thursday. So he was doing the show in LA during the week, and then he d take a red-eye and fly to Florida to be on set the next day. I remember one day, he was lifting weights, then fighting with his son [Kelvin] that night, and then having this incredibly heavy, emotional scene with his daughter [Taylor] later that day. I don t know how he had the stamina, physical strength, or capacity to do it. He blew my mind. He just showed up as this beautiful man, but then he would get in the zone with his headphones, study the script all day, and then it was like Take one. Done. Call it. He just delivered. This film is semi-autobiographical, but when you cast Kelvin, you had to make adjustments to make it feel authentic. Talk about how you did that.Well, I hope it does feel authentic. I m a freakin white dude, so I can t speak to its authenticity. All I know is there s stuff in it from my past, but I think the larger credit goes to the actors, especially Kelvin. He s like a brother to me, and I wanted to work with him again [after It Comes at Night], and I wanted to give him a great role, because I cut some amazing acting out of the last one. So I sent him the script, and he wanted to be Tyler, so we sort of rebuilt Tyler, Ronald [Brown], and the family from the ground up. I can t speak for Kelvin because he s not here, but it almost feels like a combination of both of us. And a lot of the depth – the father and son stuff – is from Kelvin and his father. His father pushed him like that, but with music. That s why they re my collaborators. I just tried to listen, understand, and talk about it with him, Taylor, Renée [Elise Goldsberry], and Sterling. It was really was a collaboration. That made it what it is, and hopefully, if it feels special, it s because we all came together to built it that way.We also have to talk about Taylor, who plays the sister. She s an incredible discovery. I m so, so, so lucky. We saw an audition tape from our amazing casting director, Avy Kaufman, and it was her. They just got scenes. The first one was like the diner scene, and you couldn t take your eyes off her. There s so much going on internally. She doesn t have to say anything, and I m so compelled. There s a beautiful subtlety in her performance that s an inherent natural thing that an actor either has or they don t. I saw her audition, and she blew my mind. And then she met Lucas, they hit it off, and then that was it. We became a great, big, messy family. But I love that girl. I just hope she shoots off from this, because she deserves it.Let s talk about the awkward love story you gave her. It s just sort of where it naturally went with the writing. I still see the first half as a love story, but it s a relationship at its end. That couple had magnetic energy like combustible balls of fire. They love hard and they fight hard. Then the movie shifts, and it s all about rebirth. In my mind, the greatest tragedy that could happen happens midway through the film. I was crying like a baby writing, shooting, and editing it. It s just sheer devastation. And then, when everyone s at rock bottom, they go through a rebirth and evolve again. I wanted the movie to give you a hug with that second love story. You ve gone through some of the worst stuff in the world, and then it s like, what a difference a day makes. Because love can be the hardest thing in the world and it can be the most beautiful thing. How did you get Frank Ocean to let you use two of his songs? He s very particular about where he licenses his music.I just feel incredibly, incredibly blessed. Frank s one of my favorite living artists. His music, especially Channel Orange, Blonde, and Endless, they kind of changed my life. It s a bit intense. So I wrote a letter, and we sent him the movie, but it s not like I ever talked to Frank. Like, my people sent stuff to his people, so I m assuming he got that stuff. But it was funny because it was going on like a month or two, and I was still editing. I sent him a rough cut of the movie because I edited for a long time, and then his people were like, Yeah, it s not looking good. There are so many songs he won t just sign off on. Maybe you can reduce it to one song. But they came back, You re approved for all the music. You re good. And that s it. Like, I don t know if he watched the movie, read my letter. I don t know anything. I m just so blessed and grateful. I don t know how, but it happened. Finally, you must be the king of the ambiguous title. Krisha, It Comes At Night, now Waves; the narratives of each film are carefully hidden within the titles. So what do you want people to think about when they hear Waves, because the film is not about surfing. [Laughs] No, it s definitely not about surfing. It sounds cheesy, but it s really about highs and lows, the highs and lows of life and of love. There s some ocean stuff in it, but it s really more about the spirit of what the movie is. And that s what I hope people connect with.Waves opens in select theaters this Friday.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week. 😈😈

Pixar may be rethinking its strategy after releasing its first film ever in the month of March. The numbers for Pixar s latest work, Onward, were expected to be on the lower end of the scale for the company, but the million opening turned out to even be low for the month in comparison to other animated efforts. The figures come at a time when the industry is potentially facing a new phase where the international dollar cannot be counted on as a safety net if American audiences don’t show up.King of the Crop: Onward Takes the Win, But Numbers Aren t So Magical When Pixar burst onto the scene with Toy Story in 1995, the Thanksgiving release opened with .14 million. Three years later, the studio s follow-up, A Bug’s Life, opened to .52 million. The only other release Pixar has had to start with less than million was their troubled production, The Good Dinosaur (.15 million) – more on that in a bit. All three of those were November releases, a strategy that generally paid off over the years with Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles – each one with a higher opening than the previous film. It was 11 years before they came back to November with The Good Dinosaur and then two years until they did it again with Coco, which opened to .8 million. Only five of Pixar’s films have failed to reach 0 million. Two of them were their first two films, another two were sequels to Cars, and the other was The Good Dinosaur. Onward is looking like the sixth. It s not for lack of quality. Of the 21 previously released Pixar films, 15 have retained Tomatometer scores of 90 or above. Onward is close, Certified Fresh at 86%, and is actually the third-best–reviewed wide release of 2020 to date behind The Invisible Man and the other new opener this week. The movie s million opening weekend haul means it stacks up against other March animated releases like so:Zootopia (.11 million)Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (.21 million)Ice Age: The Meltdown (.03 million)Monsters vs. Aliens (.32 million)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (.02 million)Home (.1 million)The Boss Baby (.19 million)Ice Age (.31 million)Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who (.01 million)How to Train Your Dragon (.73)The Croods (.63 million)Onward ( million)Rango (.07 million)Robots (.04 million)Mr. Peabody Sherman (.2 million)Meet the Robinsons (.12 million)TMNT (.25 million)Onward not even cracking that top 10 March animated openings has to be even more disappointing than being on the lower rung of the pretty elevated Pixar ladder. Every film from Peabody above passed 0 million eventually, and the average multiple from Robinsons up is a decent 3.61. That would give Onward a first estimate of 2 million, which would at least be higher than The Good Dinosaur’s 3 million but could end up on the rare red side of the Pixar ledger depending on the final budget, which no one is reporting right now. Onward’s tracking was in the mid-40s range, so we re showing some skepticism regarding the argument that panic over public health worries stopped people from hitting the cinemas. Whether that is the case overseas remains to be seen. The Top 10 And Beyond: Bad Boys Passed 0 Million, Emma Goes WideThere have been eight films – by our count – centered around basketball that have opened to million or more: Space Jam, Coach Carter, Uncle Drew, Semi-Pro, White Men Can’t Jump, Glory Road, Like Mike, Blue Chips. The Way Back does not join that list. The Ben Affleck basketball drama, which sees him reteaming with his The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor (who also did sports dramas, Miracle and Warrior), opened to .5 million, which is more in line with romantic hoops films like Just Wright (.28 million) and Love Basketball (.13 million). Those films ended up with .56 million and .45 million, respectively. (William Friedkin’s Blue Chips opened to .12 million and finished with just .07 million.) That is not great for a film budgeted somewhere between million and million, but not a disaster either. The film’s Certified Fresh 87% Tomatometer score is the second-best among 2020’s wide releases and is up there with Affleck’s best-reviewed starring efforts, such as Argo (96%), The Town (93%), Gone Girl (88%), and Chasing Amy (87%).Last week’s number 1 film, The Invisible Man, fell a decent 49% this weekend to .5 million. With million in the bank domestically, that puts it just ahead of The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy with a better second weekend than either Insidious: Chapter 2 or The Purge: Election Year. Last week we placed the film’s first estimate at million. We’re upping that to between million and million. It has grossed .2 million worldwide to date and it cost just million to make.(Photo by © Columbia Pictures)There are two other solid successes still in the top 10, with Sony’s Bad Boys for Life and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Bad Boys finally passed 0 million domestic, which is added into its 5 million haul worldwide. Sonic’s success is more…fine…as it approaches 0 million worldwide. It’s in profit, if a small one. But a profit is a profit, especially one delayed for touch-up work. Not doing so well but still hanging in there is DC’s Birds of Prey, which is up to million domestic and close to 0 million worldwide. That is going to amount to around a million loss for those invested. That is a drop in the bucket compared to The Call of the Wild. The film is still on the path for around million, but is only at .5 million worldwide right now and it is chasing down a production budget of 5 million. This film could lose anywhere between 5 million and 0 million when the final numbers are in.Finally, Focus expanded the new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma into 1,565 theaters in its third week and it grossed million. How does that compare with Focus s release of 2005’s Pride and Prejudice?2005: Pride and Prejudice – Week 1 (.8 million / 215 theaters), Week 2 (.11 million / 221), Week 3 (.02 million / 1,299)2020: Emma – Week 1 (4,482 / 9), Week 2 (.15 million / 97), Week 3 ( million / 1,565)Pride had already grossed .9 million through its third weekend and finished with .4 million. Emma is up to .8 million. Impractical Jokers: The Movie is now up to .6 million after three weekends. Its launch was earlier and wider than Emma, which will eventually pass it. The 1996 version of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, released a year after Clueless, never made it into more than 848 theaters and grossed .23 million. This Time Last Year: Captain Marvel Arrives With a BangCaptain Marvel opened to the third-best March weekend ever with 3.43 million. That made up 77.47% of the top 10 revenue for the weekend, with only How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and A Madea Family Funeral making more than million among the rest of the movies in theaters. They did do a bit better than that, with .68 million and .46 million, but it trailed off from there with The LEGO Movie 2 and Alita: Battle Angel doing just .86 million and .21 million in their respective fifth and fourth weekends of release. The documentary, Apollo 11, did break onto the list with .25 million in just 405 theaters. The top 10 films grossed a total of 8.06 million and averaged 72.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed .23 million and averaged 74.1% on the Tomatometer. This is just the ninth time since 2010 that the top 10 films on a March weekend came in with under 0 million. On the Vine: A Controversial Hunt Finally Lands in TheatersNext week audiences will finally have an opportunity to see Craig Zobel’s The Hunt, which was delayed last September in the aftermath of a mass shooting. Vin Diesel takes a stroll into comic-book land with Bloodshot and we have another film about a Christian rock star, I Still Believe, which is hoping to break out for Lionsgate the way Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine did back in 2018. Onward is likely to hold onto the number 1 spot for a second week, but this is the one film that could spring an upset. Look out in your area too for Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The drama, which premiered at Sundance, has maintained a perfect 100% with critics and is being called one of the year’s best films. For more films opening in limited release, check out what critics are saying about them HERE.The Full Top 10: March 6-8Onward (2020) 88% – million ( million total)The Invisible Man (2020) 91% – .15 million (.69 million total)The Way Back (2020) 84% – .5 million (.5 million total)Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63% – million (0.82 million total)The Call of the Wild (2020) 62% –  million (.48 million total)EMMA. Back in December, the first silhouetted look at their movie version of Sonic the Hedgehog led to a flurry of mostly-not-very-positive social media reactions, mostly about Sonic s legs. Keep in mind that Sonic the Hedgehog is a character that s been depicted in dozens of video games, so there s an established Sonic look. This week, the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer debuted, and the collective fan backlash against Sonic s design was even louder this time. (The eyes are too small, the nose is at the wrong angle, and the teeth. Where to even begin on the teeth?) The Sonic the Hedgehog missteps are only accentuated by the timing of the trailer in the same week as the first Pokemon Detective Pikachu reviews, as that film has not one but dozens of video game characters that look pretty much exactly like they do in the games. The good news, however, is that Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler relatively quickly responded on Twitter, The message is loud and clear you aren t happy with the design you want changes. It s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be. Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled for release on November 8, 2019 (up against Last Christmas, the WWII drama Midway, and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep).Fresh Developments1. ANGELINA JOLIE TAKES ON THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)If you ve heard about one new movie project for Angelina Jolie lately, it was probably Marvel Studios The Eternals, but that movie doesn t start filming until this September. That leaves a few months for Jolie to work on another project, and it s going to be Those Who Wish Me Dead, the next film from director Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water). Adapted from the novel by Michael Koryta, Those Who Wish Me Dead has a story that s not easily described in just a few words, but we ll just tease that it involves Angelina Jolie working on a forest fire lookout tower and a 14-year-old witness to a brutal murder who s in the woods as part of a witness protection program. Jolie s costars will include Tyler Perry, Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, Netflix s The Punisher) and Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Warm Bodies).2. OSCAR-WINNER OLIVIA COLMAN S THE FAVOURITE FOLLOW-UP (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Fox Searchlight Pictures)Every year, it s interesting to see what new projects the Academy Award winners will be doing next. Olivia Colman s speech as the Best Actress winner for The Favourite was one of this year s highlights, and now we know what s on the horizon for her. Colman and Anthony Hopkins (who won his own Best Actor Academy Award for Silence of the Lambs) are teaming up for a British drama called The Father, based on a play. Hopkins will play a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter (Colman). Olivia Colman will also soon be seen in Netflix s The Crown as the next actress to play the series Queen Elizabeth II after Claire Foy.3. GREEN BOOK DIRECTOR GOING ON THE GREATEST BEER RUN EVER (Photo by Frederic J. Brown/Getty Images)Speaking of follow-ups to this year s Academy Award winners, let s move on to Green Book, which won three of the year s major Oscars: Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and the big prize, Best Picture. Director Peter Farrelly s Tomatometer has more Rotten splotches than Fresh ones, but now he s got a Best Picture to his credit. This week, Farrelly signed on to write and direct an adaptation of the non-fiction book The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A True Story of Friendship Stronger Than War. Like Green Book, this film will be set in the 1960s, as John Chickie Donohue sets off to Vietnam to reunite over some beers with friends who are otherwise pre-occupied with fighting the Vietnam War (yes, really). In related news, one of the Green Book producers confirmed this week that the film s target audience was older white people. 4. LUPITA NYONG O S WACKY OUTER SPACE BEAUTY PAGEANT COMEDY (Photo by Presley Ann/Getty Images)Lupita Nyong o most recently starred in Jordan Peele s Us ( Certified Fresh at 94%), which is still in release and continuing its way up the global box office top 10 for 2019 (it s currently at #8). Nyong o recently wrapped filming of a zombie comedy called Little Monsters (costarring Josh Gad), which will premiere on Hulu, and this week, she signed on for another film from the same writer/director. The science fiction comedy is currently untitled, but it was previously called Miss Universe, and has a log line that compares it to Men in Black meets Miss Congeniality. So, from those two hints, we can probably guess that it somehow involves a beauty pageant of various aliens, including at least one human (unless Lupita s playing one of the aliens). Or maybe we re reading those hints all wrong, and it s about a secret police force that protects us from beauty pageants.5. THE SUICIDE SQUAD CASTING UPDATE: RATCATCHER AND POLKA-DOT MAN (Photo by Ben Rothstein/Marvel Studios)When Disney fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 last year (before changing their mind and hiring him back), they left his options open just long enough for Warner Bros. to swoop in and hire him for the soft reboot of The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021). Just based on what we know so far, it s easy to spot the differences between the Rotten 2016 version and what Gunn s planning. We don t know yet who s going to play King Shark (unless he s just a big CGI monster), but this week, two of the other new villains-turned-heroes were cast, and neither are big stars. David Dastmalchian is not yet a household name, but you might recognize him from roles in The Dark Knight, Prisoners, and the Ant-Man movies, and now he s joining The Suicide Squad as the Polka-Dot Man, a supervillain with a costume with super-powered polka dots (yes, really). For Ratcatcher (another fairly obscure villain), Gunn is going with a relative newcomer, Portugal s Daniela Melchior. As for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn is expected to direct it after The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), which suggests the earliest we might see it would be sometime in 2022.Rotten Ideas4. KEVIN HART TAKING ON THE EXTREME JOB OF REMAKING A KOREAN COMEDY (Photo by Warner Bros.)Earlier in his film career, Kevin Hart s Tomatometer was mostly dominated by Rotten splats, and to his credit, he s been starting to turn things around lately with films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Certified Fresh at 76%) and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 88%). We re not going to give Kevin Hart the benefit of the doubt just yet (*cough* The Upside *cough*), but we re willing to call this week s news only borderline Rotten. Hart is producing and will probably star in  an English-language remake of the hit South Korean comedy Extreme Job. If he does sign on to star, Hart would be playing a narcotics detective who goes undercover at a fried chicken restaurant to stake out a suspected crime gang, but the stakeout takes a turn when the operation results in unexpected business success. The original version has become South Korea s top-grossing film of all time since its release just a few months ago.3. THIRD FANTASTIC BEASTS DELAYED UNTIL 2021(Photo by Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. might be forgiven for thinking that they had a sure thing with their Fantastic Beasts franchise. Before last year s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald, the Harry Potter franchise s films had always been Certified Fresh and blockbuster box office hits, collectively earning upwards of billion worldwide. That s not to say The Crimes of Grindlewald was exactly a bomb, considering it earned 3 million worldwide, but those results were probably disappointing. Warner Bros. had been planning on releasing each new film every two years in odd years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc), but this week, the studio pushed Fantastic Beasts 3 back a year to November 12, 2021 instead. Warner Bros. executive Toby Emmerich explained the move by saying that they want to give the filmmakers time and space to allow their artistry to truly flourish and deliver the best possible film to our fans. It s not yet known if Johnny Depp will be returning for the third film.2. THIS WEEK IN VIDEO GAME MOVIES: SAINTS ROW(Photo by John Baer/Overture Films courtesy Everett Collection)If the early reviews are any indication, next week s Pokemon Detective Pikachu may finally break the long-standing streak of Rotten Tomatometers for movies based on video games. That would be great and all, but that still leaves dozens of Rotten ones to account for. One director hoping to contribute to an upward trend is F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious), who previously had been trying to get a Kane and Lynch movie going. Gray is now attached to direct a film based on the video game franchise Saints Row, which, over the course of several games, began with the Grand Theft Auto template and took it to increasingly ridiculous settings and themes. How far Gray is willing to go is anybody s guess.1. JENNIFER GARNER HEADING TO FANTASY CAMP WITH I FEEL PRETTY CREATIVES (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)To her credit, Jennifer Garner continues to find regular work even as the film industry arguably moves further away from the sorts of movies that she s previously been known for. Unfortunately, for her next film, Garner is signing up to work with two screenwriters whose work has never earned a Fresh score; they haven t even scored above 46% since the 1990s. Jennifer Garner is signed to star in Fantasy Camp, a comedy set up at mini-major STXfilms, the company behind the same creative team s most recent film, I Feel Pretty (Rotten at 35%). Garner will play a woman who goes to a reunion at the theater camp of her youth, Camp Footlights, where she will get the chance to challenge her fears, live out her dreams and finally take the stage.
