From promising releases by new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week. For the foreseeable future, the specialty box office and all theatrical releases will be on hold as we all make efforts to socially distance ourselves and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. With that in mind, we have reshaped our Indie Fresh List to reflect the specialty box office releases that are newly available on streaming services and VOD. This week we have a horror-comedy about the devil and heavy metal, a horror film set at sea where an unseen force infects the crew, and an Oscar-nominated tale inspired by the Paris riots of 2005. In our Spotlight section, Best Picture winner Parasite is now available to stream on Hulu just in case you somehow haven t seen it yet.Streaming This Weekend

140 Essential Animated Movies To Watch NowThe origins of the whiz-bang animated wonders we see today in the likes of Toy Story, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and How to Train Your Dragon date back more than a hundred years. Flip books and zoetropes revealed the mesmerizing power of animation to humans before movies were even invented in the late 19th century. And if you really wanted to journey back in time, look to prehistoric cave art where animals drawn with excessive pairs of legs created the illusion of motion when illuminated by fire – it might be considered the first animation. So it was inevitable, practically human nature, that animation grew in tandem with cinema from the beginning. And it was only inevitable in the Internet age that someone, somewhere would pile up all the best feature-length animated films from the 20th century and beyond, rank them, and call the guide something like the 140 Essential Animated Movies Ever to Watch Right Now! Which is what you ll find below. All forms of the medium are featured here, from cel (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Land Before Time) to 3-D (Toy Story, Shrek), rotoscoped (Tower, A Scanner Darkly) to stop-motion (Chicken Run, Fantastic Mr. Fox), and oil canvas (Loving Vincent) to mixed media (Waltz With Bashir). Animation is frequently associated with specific studios, and to that end we have represented Disney (Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty), Pixar (WALL-E, Finding Dory), DreamWorks (How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda), Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Kiki s Delivery Service), and more. How did we decide on the Essential 140? We looked at reviews, other best of lists, cultural impact, and applied some editorial discretion. They didn t have to just be good – in fact, some are not so Fresh at all! – but they had to play a part in the history of the medium. These are the movies that have been passed on for generations, no matter how much style and artistic tastes change year-to-year. They re the ones that parents and kids watch together, frequently becoming part of the family tradition. They re the movies that pushed animation forward, and that inspire people to pick up the pen, pencil, or stylus and try to make their own mark in history with their own colorful stories.Tomatometer scores were not a factor in ranking (besides the fact that it needed to have one), only feature films were considered, and movies with some live-action thrown in (The LEGO Movie, James and the Giant Peach) were fine, as long as the majority of their runtime was animated.Whatever tickles your toon, you ll find it s type here. Get drawn to the 140 essential animated movies ever!Check out the 140 Essential Animated TV Shows #140 龙清手游盒子是一款游戏资源非常丰富的手机游戏软件。在这类龙清手游盒子用户可以免费在线来看游戏工具,并且拥有很多游戏福利的哦!非常实用的哦!喜欢的伙伴快下载试试吧!!!

Like many who have come before her, director Melina Matsoukas began her career behind the camera in the music world, crafting award-winning videos for the likes of Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, before she went on to helm episodes of critically acclaimed TV series Insecure and Master of None. It was on the latter that she first worked alongside Lena Waithe, most notably on a pivotal Thanksgiving episode centered on Waithe s character, Denise. The two of them reunite for this week s Queen Slim, Matsoukas feature directorial debut and Waithe s feature writing debut, and critics are calling their new collaboration a success. Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith star as the titular duo, a young Black couple on a first date who are pulled over by a cop presumably for a routine traffic stop. The situation escalates quickly and erupts into violence, and when the cop ends up dead, Queen and Slim flee the scene and become heralded as a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde when video of the incident goes viral. Critics say Queen Slim is a provocative examination of timely issues that tackles its potentially thorny themes thoughtfully, but also roots them in a gripping drama bolstered by powerful performances from its two leads. It may not necessarily be an ideal post-turkey pick-me-up, but it should be rewarding to viewers willing to engage with it.

ir interpretation of the words onto the screen in the most captivating way possible. Cinematography, editing, production design, costumes, scoring, and, most importantly, performance all live or die by the director s vision. This why Best Picture and Best Director nominations often go hand in hand.Featuring names like Scorsese, Tarantino, and Soderbergh, this year s contest is poised to pit some of our generation s most iconic filmmakers against each other for end-of-year accolades. Rotten Tomatoes whittled down the names in contention to a list of the five strongest contenders using Tomatometer scores, scripts, early screenings, and the thoughts of pundits and critics. Whether we like it or not, the campaigns are quietly underway, and the conversation has started – and we re now ready to join it. Of course, if history tells us anything, it is that some of these names won t make it to Oscar night, but we re pretty confident a few of them will be right up there in awards chatter. So read on as we break down our ridiculously early picks for 2020 Best Director contenders.Don t agree with our picks? Have at us in the comments.Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Quentin Tarantino would invariably rank high if not at the top of just about every list of iconic contemporary directors. The 70s-junkie pop-culture aficionado released his ninth studio film earlier this year, and following the lackluster response to his last effort, The Hateful Eight, the Los Angeles native is back and enjoying his best reviews in years. With Steven Soderbergh, James Mangold, and Martin Scorsese likely populating the category, star power could be the thing that differentiates each film in this highly competitive field. Soderbergh has Queen Meryl Streep, Mangold will have Damon and Bale, and the trifecta of Pesci, Pacino, and De Niro are with Scorsese for The Irishman; but as impressive as all of those are, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood boasts LEO AND BRAD! They gave two of the most universally acclaimed performances of the year – even if the movie they were featured in has divided some critics. Adding in Tarantino s signature style, there doesn t appear to be anything standing between the Pulp Fiction director and his third Best Director nomination.James Mangold, Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92%James Mangold managed to pull off a shock on Oscar nominations morning in 2018 when he, along with American Gods writer Micheal Green and Scott Frank, garnered an Oscar nomination for Logan. The Wolverine saga s climax still remains the only comic book superhero film to earn the honor, and though Mangold has previously directed Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie to Oscar wins, Logan marks his sole nomination. Ford v. Ferrari looks to change all that, telling the true-life tale of how the Ford Motor Company worked tirelessly to build a car that could beat racing powerhouse Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966, with Matt Damon as famed Ford car designer Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as racing legend Ken Miles. If Mangold can spin a perfect mix of car-racing adrenaline and sports movie passion, he may just catch the eye of Academy voters.Greta Gerwig, Little Women (2019) 95%Little Women released its first trailer earlier this week and set social media on fire. Watching the internet s boyfriend Timothée Chalamet profess his love for indie princess Saoirse Ronan on a wind-swept hill looks set to be more than enough to guarantee the period drama will be a hit with audiences. Moreover, the fact that Greta Gerwig is adapting a previously Oscar-nominated novel also could work in her favor for Oscar accolades. Some considered her choice to adapt Louisa May Alcott s Little Women for the eighth time a slightly uninspired way to follow up Lady Bird, but when Gerwig can command a cast that includes Chalamet, Ronan, Chris Cooper, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep, you can t fault her for wanting to put her own spin on the story of the March ladies. With nearly 35 Oscar nominations between the cast and crew, Little Women is a juggernaut of talent that cannot be denied. Adding in the fact that the director branch s most influential member, Steven Spielberg, is a fan of Gerwig, and that she is likely the only female director in contention well, odds are she ll make the cut.Martin Scorsese, The Irishman (2019) 95%Thankfully The Departed gave Martin Scorsese his first directing win after 25 years and five nominations, so the pressure is off slightly, but the 76-year-old director is still hungry for more. Boasting a stacked cast and the use of new technology, Scorsese s The Irishman is set to be a major player come Oscar time. During last year s ceremony, as Netflix was racking up multiple wins from its 15 nominations, the studio opted to play a teaser for The Irishman. It was a mic drop moment to be sure, and while the trailer showed no footage or even an official image, the names plastered on the screen were enough: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Martin Scorsese. Using technology unlike what we’ve seen in the MCU, or will see in Ang Lee’s The Gemini Man starring Will Smith, The Irishman has positioned itself for multiple, possible double-digit nominations in technical and above-the-line categories, including potential nominations for its three leads. Add in the script, which has been said to be incredible, and the fact that this is Scorsese s return to his mob roots, and it s hard to see him not getting a nod. We broke down all we gathered from the trailer and all we know about the film so far, and though much is still steeped in secrecy, Scorsese s likelihood for a nomination is undeniable.Bong Joon-ho, Parasite (2019) 98%

With classic characters such as Supergirl and Batgirl making an indelible mark on pop culture — along with more recent characters including Harley Quinn — the iconography for the DC Super Hero Girls range of comics, toys, and books was strong and the appeal immediate. Debuting in 2015 with a web series and a toy line, it re-framed characters like Batgirl and Harley as students at Super Hero High who experienced typical young teen problems along with complications from their side gigs as heroes. It eventually led to direct-to-video features, an animated broadcast special, and graphic novels as part of a continual expansion of the brand. But last week s debut of a new DC Super Hero Girls animated series on Cartoon Network, developed and executive produced by My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s Lauren Faust, establishes a new cartoon continuity for the brand that is separate from the web series. And as voice actors Tara Strong and Kimberly Brooks — veterans of both versions — told Rotten Tomatoes, the new series is very different from its predecessor. The show focuses on a group of girls at a Metropolis-area high school who discover they all moonlight as superheroes. The team includes Batgirl, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon (Strong); Wonder Woman, a.k.a. Diana Prince (Grey Griffin); Zatanna (Kari Wahlgren); Green Lantern, a.k.a. Jessica Cruz (Myrna Velasco); Bumblebee, a.k.a. Karen Beecher (Brooks); and Supergirl, a.k.a. Kara Danvers (Nicole Sullivan). Characters including Lena Luthor, her older brother Lex, and Barry Allen also populate the world. Harley Quinn (also Strong) even makes a cameo appearance in the series’ 60-minute debut, “#SweetJustice;” a frantic, silly, and fun introduction to the characters as they learn to be friends and heroes.(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)“The last version was geared toward a younger audience,” Strong explained. While the earlier format “had its place” and drew in plenty of little girls who were fans of the superheroes, she noted the new show is “a lot sleeker and more sophisticated and appeals to a much broader audience.”The growing sophistication and broader intended age range also means an added emphasis on what superheroes do best: fight.“[On] this show we actually do some serious fighting,” Strong said. “We have serious weaponry. The stakes are a lot higher. In my view, it s a completely different show, although still encapsulating what it is to be a female superhero and be a teenager.”The series is also hilarious and will attract plenty of boys as well, the women added, but most importantly, it ll appeal to families.“The kids are going to like it and also there s humor that adults are going to get, too. It s not wasted on us,” Brooks said. Gags include punny names for businesses, an extended Twilight pastiche in #SweetJustice, and nods to more obscure elements of DC Comics mythology.Wahlgren credited Faust and her deep knowledge of the comics as essential to shaping the series and explicitly communicating to her stars what she wants to achieve.“She s so talented and she s also really, really open to suggestions and interpretations from the actors,” Wahlgren said. “I think we ve all had a chance to find our characters because she s given us a lot of leeway to do that.”(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)Added Strong, “I just thanked her last week for having every single body type represented in this show. As a little girl, I was never, like, a little stick-skinny thing, and when you see magazine covers of supermodels you think, Oh is that what I m supposed to be? And so the fact that every single body shape is represented in superheroes [means] … there s an authenticity to these characters that translates.”As it happens, Faust was fostering a concept very similar to DC Super Hero Girls for ages. As part of Cartoon Network’s 2012 DC Nation block, she produced a pilot of sorts with Super Best Friends Forever, five animated shorts featuring a bulked up Supergirl (Sullivan), a tiny and energetic Batgirl (Strong), and a confident Wonder Girl (Griffin) leading the pack. So the fact that aspects of the designs and the voices return in DC Super Hero Girls is no accident.“As a concept series for these females, I thought [Super Best Friends Forever] was such a strong idea. It was not long after Powerpuff Girls and I thought, let s keep this rolling. And it didn t get picked up,” Strong recalled. The continued success of the DC Super Hero Girls range led to discussions with Faust to revive elements of Super Best Friends Forever as the new DC Super Hero Girls show. As production began, Faust produced a new version of the Super Best Friends Forever short “Time Waits for No Girl” — in which Batgirl waits for her father to go to sleep so she can join the other heroes — as DC Super Hero Girls “#TheLateBatsby,” which ran in front of the theatrical release of Teen Titans GO! to the Movies. All three actors have long associations with the DC Comics characters. Brooks voiced Oracle in the Batman: Arkham video game series, Lightning and Mari McCabe in the previous DC Super Hero Girls, and Batgirl in the Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham video game. Strong often voices Harley in projects as varied as the earlier DC Super Hero Girls, Batman: Arkham City, and an infamous scene on Arrow ( for which she’s credited as Deranged Squad Female ). She is also well known for voicing Raven in the Teen Titans and Teen Titans GO! animated series. Wahlgren has voiced Starfire in the DC Animated Universe direct-to-video features, Saturn Girl, and Zatanna once before in the Justice League Heroes video game. The three stars agreed that the new DC Super Hero Girls is a particularly special project. Each time they return to a character, as they do here, it requires bringing something new or different to the role depending on whether the tone of the project is dark or silly or crazy or anything else.(Photo by Warner Bros./Cartoon Network)“When we go in to audition or we meet the team, they ll say, you know, This is really dark, or, This is really silly, or, This is really crazy, ” Strong said. “You have to tweak it a little bit to match the world that you re performing in.“We become these characters in our minds, we envision ourselves,” she continued. “You could ask these girls anything about their characters, and they ll be able to tell you from a very organic place what they re all about.”With their understanding of the characters, they said the key appeal of the new DC Super Hero Girls series is their camaraderie and sense of fun.“[They’re] these kick-ass chicks doing some pretty incredible things together,” Strong said. “Navigating friendship and superhero and teenager all wrapped up in this fun, beautiful package.”In addition to inspiring feelings of empowerment, it also sparks nostalgia for the stars.“This show, I think, is so much fun because we get to tap into our youth — at least that s important to me, anyway,” Brooks said, adding, “I love that all of those different types that you went to school with in high school are represented. Everything from the more hippie, environmentally conscious to the overly theatrical girly girl, to the really shy, studious smart kid. I just feel like everybody s going to be able to see themselves in at least one of the characters.”DC Super Hero Girls airs Sundays at 4 p.m. on Cartoon Network.Like this? Ask the cast and creator of Hanna if the show s protagonist is a hero, and you ll get diverse answers. Series creator David Farr labeled the genetically-modified 15-year-old trained assassin an existential heroine, self-aware and making her own choices about who she is and what she wants in life.Ask star Esmé Creed-Miles if her character is an existential heroine, and you get another perspective. Existentialism, to me, is a common application of meaning or needing meaning. It s not something Hanna is, actually at her core, searching for,  Creed-Miles explained to Rotten Tomatoes in a chat about the new season of the coming-of-age/espionage thriller. How those two views diverge is an example of the generational dynamics that make Hanna resonate so profoundly today.(Photo by Christopher Raphael/Amazon Prime Video)In season 1, Hanna was searching for truth. Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman), her unconventional father figure, raised Hanna in the woods, training her to live her life off-the-grid and away from the civilized world in order to keep her safe. But her drive to find out where she c

After a lively presentation featuring moderator Stephen Colbert, director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and various members of the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker cast, Abrams unleashed the first teaser trailer for the film, finally ending months of speculation about the film’s title and revealing a few key things. Let’s take a look and some of the things we learned from the teaser and the Star Wars Celebration presentation as Star Wars returns to the Skywalker Saga and its key ideas one last time. No One Is Ever Gone and the Palpatine Cackle(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Despite becoming one with the Force at the conclusion of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) continues to offer Rey (Daisy Ridley) advice from the same place Obi-Wan counseled him long, long ago. Early in the trailer, he tells her that 1000 generations of Jedi experience lives within her, but the fight she will face is hers alone. From the start, it seems the fight will be with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), her most obvious rival in this latest contest for the balance of the Force. But late in the trailer, the familiar laugh of Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) can be heard, suggesting the “great evil” Abrams teased during the panel presentation will indeed be the original Sith architect of the Empire, tying the first episode back into the ninth.McDiarmid made a brief appearance on the Celebration stage to simply say “roll it again” for an appreciative crowd. But the sense that no one is gone also informed the shots of Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. As previously reported, Abrams used material from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to keep her alive in the story. “Emotionally, everyday, it hits me that she isn’t here, but we’re still working with her every day,” he said. “She is there in these scenes — in some scenes with Billie [Lourd], her daughter. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is mind-blowing to me.”Luke s Lightsaber Lives(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Prior to rolling the teaser, Ridley was asked about the status of the Skywalker lightsaber seemingly destroyed at the conclusion of The Last Jedi. “My answer is not the end of the story,” she said. “But the lightsaber Rey inherited from Luke lives.”This proved to be true in the teaser, with Rey igniting the laser sword shortly before Kylo’s TIE fighter reaches her on an unidentified desert planet. While the saber may not be a Star Wars: Episode I — Phantom Menace detail — Anankin (Jake Lloyd) was far too young in that film to construct it — it is one of the longest standing icons of the entire series. And while broken in the last film, its appearance here is, ultimately, appropriate. There Will Be Worlds Both Strange and Familiar(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)So let’s talk about that desert planet for a moment. Star Wars loves its deserts. Despite Luke telling C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) that Tatooine is the planet furthest from the bright center of the universe, it is a shockingly important world in terms of galactic history during the Skywalker Era. It remains to be seen if the desert planet in the teaser is Tatoonie, Jakku, or yet another desert planet, but considering that environment’s prevalence in the Skywalker Saga, it has to be a key element of The Rise of Skywalker. But it is not the only biome one can expect to see in the film. In the teaser, we get brief shots of an icy, mountain world, a dying forest bathed in red sunlight, and even a return to the Yavin star system. During the panel, Abrams also revealed a photo featuring the Millennium Falcon and many of the characters in a jungle environment. Abrams called the film an “an epic space adventure on many worlds,” and it would appear to be true. But will the Falcon crew hop to as many worlds as the Rogue One group? Time, of course, will tell.Lando Pilots the Falcon Again(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Perhaps one of the most emotional shots in the teaser for Star Wars old-timers is the glimpse of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) at the controls of the Millennium Falcon. As it happens, Lando is even back in his yellow-and-blue shirt from the Solo: A Star Wars Story era, recalling the circumstances under which he lost the ship in the first place. It’s a good look on Williams, who also appeared on stage with the cast. “I didn’t expect to be in this new adventure, but I got lucky,” he said when asked about returning to the role. “I regard this as a real highlight.”But he, of course, defended the scoundrel’s actions in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when Colbert asked him about selling out the rebels to Darth Vader. “I get sick and tired of being accused of betraying Han Solo,” he joked. “He had to figure something out! Did anybody die?” he continued, pausing only as the crowd applauded.  “I had to figure out a way to prevent the complete demise of my friend and his friends.”Of course, it remains to be seen if Lando will prevent any more deaths with his return to the series. But based on the character’s excitement to be back in the saddle — presumably for the first time since his Star Wars: Return of the Jedi run on the second Death Star — we can’t wait to see what he does with the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.BB-8 Has A Cute New Droid Pal(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)“BB-8 has a new friend,” said Abrams shortly before rolling the teaser. A new, even smaller droid wandered onto stage. “His name is D-O,” said the director. Looking like a tricycle wheel with a shuttlecock affixed at the top, he immediately elicited sounds of what we can only call “affection” from the crowd in attendance. He appears briefly in the teaser alongside BB-8, but both the preview and the director were mum on his ultimate role in the saga’s final chapter. Like BB-8 and the porgs before him, expect D-O to be your favorite new cute Star Wars character. Provided you enjoy cuteness in your Star Wars, that is.For those that do not — which is equally valid — the teaser also offers a brief glimpse of Kylo Ren’s helmet being reforged. Rumors persist that the long-teased Knights of Ren will finally make their debut in this story. And if they are aligned with the great evil of Palpatine, expect a certain darkness worthy of concluding Star Wars. Funny they all feature McDiarmid’s characteristic laugh. We See the Remains of the Death Star(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Another iconic Star Wars element resurfaces in the teaser in the form of Death Star wreckage Rey, Finn (John Boyega) and the others spy in the distance. Considering the terrain, we’re assuming the piece of the infamous battle station landed on one of the planets in the Yavin system, if not the moon of Yavin IV where the rebels maintained their secret base in the original Star Wars, Rogue One, and the final season of Star Wars Rebels. The image evokes both the original film and the haunting image of a smashed Star Destroyer in the Force Awakens teaser. Of course, fans will immediately wonder how a piece of the space station could survive the explosion as depicted in Star Wars, but debris of that magnitude does not seem out of the realm of possibility. Remember all the jokes about the second Death Star raining debris across the forest moon of Endor and ending the Ewoks in the resulting ecological disaster?Despite the presumed improbability of the wreckage surviving for 30-odd years, it shook the Celebration stage audience as they saw it for the first time. When The Phantom Menace teaser first debuted 20 years ago, it boldly declared “Every Saga Has A Beginning.” The Rise of Skywalker echoes that sentiment by declaring “The Saga Comes To An End.” Despite a title more appropriate for a Star Wars prequel or reboot, The Rise of Skywalker definitely declares a conclusion to the great filmic experiment that began over 40 years ago, something that Abrams, Kennedy, and the cast stressed during the panel. And the emotions surrounding that were felt on the Celebration stage, even as the crowd cheered Rey on in her leap atop a TIE Fighter. Emotions, we expect, that people will feel when the film comes out this Christmas.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20, 2019.Like this? (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Critics and fans alike are loving Avengers: Endgame. The movie is Certified Fresh at 95% and made a cool .2 billion at the global box office in its first weekend. It could very well turn out to be the biggest movie ever – and one of the most beloved. The key to its success? Critics say it s all about giving the MCU s loyal fans what they want. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend was typical in his assessment, calling Endgame,  A wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters.” It s stacked with f k yeah moments and delights, the best of which make callbacks to early films in the franchise. And one of those movies is more important than any other. So, hear us out: Endgame owes much of its success to that under-sung hero of the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron. While one of the least popular entries in the MCU, and the lowest-rated Avengers flick on the Tomatometer at 75% (which is still not bad!), Ultron deserves credit as the foundation on which the entire second half of the MCU was built. And we re about to make a spoiler-filled case as to why, breaking down the story beats and relationships that Ultron established and that Endgame would use to such great effect – so be warned if you ve not seen Endgame, Ultron, or both.Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. Hulk Taking Control of Both Sides? It Started With Ultron.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Around the time of Age of Ultron, there was still hope at Marvel that they would be able to make a deal for the Hulk and start a string of Hulk-only movies. Universal still owned the rights to the character for all standalone films, but behind the scenes, there were talks. When it became clear that a deal was not going to be forthcoming, Marvel spread the planned events for a standalone Hulk film throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Infinity War two-parter. That’s right, the seeds of the fantastic Hipster Hulk payoff in Endgame were first sewn in Ultron. Think back to the Hulk/Banner in Ultron; he’s held back from the team at times to make sure he doesn’t do too much damage. Then, after a wave of the finger from Scarlet Witch, he wreaks havoc. Throughout Ultron, Banner is always questioning whether the team needs a ‘code green.’ He knows the Hulk s a powerful weapon, but he s terrified that he s not in control. By Endgame, we ve finally seen the complete character arc from this struggle in Ultron, to the Hulk completely taking over in Thor: Ragnarok, to Banner s inability to summon the green guy in Avengers: Infinity War, to the eventual blend of the Hulk s might and Bruce s mind in the new movie. (The latest incarnation is a play on a storyline that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #377, in which Banner finally has control of both the monster and his mind – adding hipster glasses with a huge cardigan is just a lovely bonus.)The Start of a Beautiful and Pivotal Relationship: Wanda and Vision, a.k.a. WandaVision.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The WandaVision relationship, as well as their powers, would become crucial to the MCU and especially to the Infinity Saga. It is also central to two of the saga s biggest moments: it s Vision s death in Infinity War that breaks our hearts, and it s Wanda s moment of revenge and power in Endgame that gives us such great feels. And that all started with Ultron. From her first encounter with Vision in Age of Ultron, Wanda is drawn to his mind; even when we still didn t know if he was good or evil, her first words about him were, “I can read him… his mind. Ultron introduces Wanda and her brother to his creation in the final stages of completion and even before his birth, Vision s mind called out to her. Talk about a meet-cute.When we finally learn Thanos master plan to gather all the Infinity Stones, we realize quickly that Vision will be in danger. The Mind Stone is the origin of his powers – it s literally fused to his head using whatever tech stuff Shuri was talking about in Infinity War. That connection sets up what might be the Infinity Saga s ultimate and most painful sacrifice: Killing Vision in Infinity War as a last-ditch effort to thwart Thanos turns out to be a pointless and heartbreaking effort – with a twist of the Infinity Gauntlet, it is all undone. We watched them fall in love, beginning in Ultron, and witnessed their tragic end in Infinity War. When she appears in Endgame, summoning her powers in fury, it s a completely satisfying bookend to everything Ultron began.Who is worthy? THE PERFECT SETUP FOR CAP S BIG HAMMER MOMENT.In one of the best scenes in Age of Ultron, the Avengers pal around with a few drinks at an afterparty. What is played as an entertaining comedic break, with the various members trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, actually sets up one of the biggest moments of Endgame. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and – comically – Bruce Banner all try to lift the hammer and prove themselves worthy. None are successful, but for one brief moment, Captain America tugs at Mjölnir, and it quivers. The movement wipes a confident smirk off Thor’s face and signals that maybe Steve Rogers could one day wield the hammer. So it’s no surprise in the finale of Endgame to see who is lifting Mjölnir. Thor even exclaims, “I knew it!” (It s actually another direct pull from the comics: Captain America is one of the few worthy enough to wield the hammer forged in the heart of a dying star – we re still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.)Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and the farm.According to Ultron director Joss Whedon, there were several creative differences between him and Marvel Studios during the filming of Age of Ultron, none more contentious than the debate over the trip to the farm to meet Clint’s family. Marvel brass were apparently not into giving Hawkeye a familial backstory – having seen Endgame, we re thankful they lost on that one. The broken, singularly focused, vigilante Ronin that Hawkeye becomes in Endgame doesn t have the same resonance if we haven t spent time with his family. (And what about that opening scene?!) The device of the farm is also used to further establish the closeness between Natasha and Hawkeye, as in Ultron we learn that she is the only one with prior knowledge of the farm and his family life. These quiet moments raise the emotional stakes of the fight we see between Clint and Natasha in Endgame, as they do battle over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone. Without the Ultron setup, those stakes would not be so high.Tony vs. Cap: A Civil War begins.Civil War may have been the first battle between the Avengers, but some early, quiet shots were fired in Ultron. The argument on the farm during which Steve scolds Tony for creating, and especially for not telling him about, Ultron, is one many will point back to as the start of their fracturing. Then there is the physical fight between Captain America and Iron Man that happens later in Ultron, while Tony tries to finish his Vision . Steve and Tony come to blows about it just before Thor harnesses lighting to finally birth Vision. The Russo brothers told us in our extended interview that the Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War because they were divided, and the cracks of that fatal divide first began to appear in Ultron. Even direct quotes from Age of Ultron reappear in Endgame with Tony repeating his warning, “We’ll lose – adding Steve’s reply of “We’ll lose together” is of little solace. That broken version of Tony, ripping his core from his chest, was perhaps even harder to watch than his heroic end.Tony, always trying to get ahead of things.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It starts and stops with Tony. The whole plot of Ultron comes from one driving force: Tony’s fear of the next thing from space trying to annihilate the earth. That up there, he quips, pointing to the sky and referencing the alien invasion of New York. That s the endgame. And it was, in every sense of the word. Thanos does come to destroy the earth, and that threat is what the Avengers were created to stop. Tony, in creating Ultron, was trying to win a war before it started; during the wood cutting argument, Steve astutely reminds him, “Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, people die.” Before the events of Ultron, Tony created Veronica just in case they ever lost control of The Hulk (or a lullaby didn’t work). The Hulkbuster back-up plan kind of worked. That drive to plan ahead, to be prepared, may have been a fatal flaw with Ultron, but it also allowed Tony to outsmart Thanos in Endgame. The glove Tony installs on his suit to steal the infinity stones is just that type of planning. He was reluctant to join the second fight and the visions of defeat he saw in Ultron still haunt him, but he was, in the end, able to use that fear to defeat their most formidable foe. It s a complete bookend to the character and his essential motivation.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)And there are so many smaller Ultron setups:Ragnarok: Heimdall first teases Ragnarok and the fact they will lose in Thor’s vision before he later heads to a cave to get more answers. Thor sees the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet for the first time. More breadcrumbs to our final battle.Avengers Assemble: The “Avengers Assemble” line that Captain America calls out in the final battle was first teased in Ultron. A near synonymous tag line for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it is a line comic book fans have been waiting to hear. We cut to credits before Cap could call it out in Ultron, but we finally get it in Endgame.Wakanda: In a quick scene with Ulysses Klaw, we first hear reference what would turn out to be the key destination in the highest-grossing superhero movie ever – before Endgame. Vibranium, Andy Serkis with a Wakandan tattoo, and the rest is history.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America Back With Carter: We’d have to guess it’s not a coincidence that Wanda’s visions sent Captain America back to Agent Carter and the 1940s. Throughout the series, his greatest regret is not being able to share a life with her, thus making his ending as an old man who stole time to get a life all the sweeter. Fine, I ll do it myself : We meet a winking and silent Thanos in The Avengers, and we first spy the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor’s Scarlet Witch vision. But it s not until Ultron s mid-credits stinger that we see our big baddie in full armor – voiced by Josh Brolin – snatching the gauntlet and saying, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.”(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The Avengers Facility: A small but noteworthy moment. The Avengers get a new home. The Avengers compound is basecamp going forward.

Ghcxuf Debbie DayComic-Con International: San Diego is very much a convention about television. That evolution is hardly surprising with the similarities the format shares with comic books. Both allow their audiences to grow intimately attached to characters over a long timespan. Both reveal their stories in installments, utilizing a certain pace within episodes (or issues) and a larger construction of momentum across a season (or story arc). And in 2019, television — particularly of the kind based on comic books —dominates the programming schedule with The CW’s superhero offerings taking over Ballroom 20 for most of Saturday and shows like The Walking Dead and Riverdale commanding Hall H-sized crowds. Additionally, HBO is setting up a Watchmen experience at the Petco Park Home Plate Gate (and at the parking lot on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Island Avenue) to promote their upcoming quasi-sequel to the landmark miniseries by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins. Trying to see all of the Comics on TV style programming may be impossible, but we imagine the most hard-core Comic-Con aficionados (and some of us contractually-obligated media types) are willing to try. With that in mind, join us as we take a look at all the panels highlighting Comics on TV at Comic-Con. It may help you choose your priorities.WednesdayWarner Bros. Television always brings a few sneak peeks to preview night. This year, Batwoman and Pennyworth are the notable premieres with a new episode of The 100 and a to-be-determined Rooster Teeth presentation rounding out the evening. If you’re done early with the exclusives hunting, it may be worth heading upstairs and talking a look.ThursdayTeen Titans GO! New Episode Premiere and Q A (Room 6DE, 3:15 p.m.)The first full day of Comic-Con gets its Comics on TV content rolling with a new episode of Teen Titans GO! The animated shorts are somewhat divisive with fans of the older Teen Titans unimpressed with GO!’s anarchic comedy and format. Nonetheless, fun can be had as members of the voice cast and the crew will be on hand to debut the new episode. Expect some of the voice actors to switch into their roles during the Q A. It is traditional, after all.Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Hall H, 3:30 p.m.)Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. survived bouncing around the schedule, a cancellation scare, and the Snap to make their way to Hall H this year. They definitely earned it as Season 6 has been its strongest year yet. Cast members Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward – and executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon, Jeff Bell, and Jeph Loeb – will be on hand to discuss alien psychoactive substances, the mystery of Sarge, and the Planet Kitson. They will also tease some events to come in Season 7.Stumptown (Indigo Ballroom, 4:15 p.m.)Based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth, and Justin Greenwood, the new ABC series focuses on Dex Parios, a sharp-witted Army veteran who takes up private investigations to pay off her gambling debts. She also looks out for her brother while solving cases and avoiding trouble. Star Cobie Smulders, along with co-stars Jake Johnson, Michael Ealy, Camryn Manheim, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, executive producer Jason Richman, and Rucka will introduce audiences to the TV version of Dex and the Portland, Oregon criminal underworld she knows far too well for her 😈😈

Netflix dominated the week with several big reveals, starting with the news that a Witcher prequel is in the works. Plus, get the low-down on Ratched, the Ryan Murphy origin-story series about a psychiatric-hospital nurse with her own issues. The streamer also reportedly has a Splinter Cell anime adaptation in the works, picked up seven classic Black comedies, and more in the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYThe Witcher Gets a Prequel With Blood Origin(Photo by Netflix)Netflix has ordered a six-episode prequel limited series for The Witcher, called The Witcher: Blood Origin, and set 1,200 years before the events of the original series.Logline: Set in an Elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell a story lost to time — the origin of the very first Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal conjunction of the spheres, when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will serve as executive producer, with The Witcher writer Declan de Barra as executive producer and showrunner, and The Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski as a consultant.“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin, De Barra said in a statement. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books: What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall. How vast swathes of knowledge are lost forever in such a short time, often compounded by colonization and a rewriting of history. Leaving only fragments of a civilization’s true story behind. The Witcher: Blood Origin will tell the tale of the Elven civilization before its fall, and most importantly reveal the forgotten history of the very first Witcher.”Ratched’s All-Star Cast, Led by Sarah Paulson, Unfolds the Backstory of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Villain Nurse Mildred Ratched(Photo by Netflix)Ryan Murphy’s latest collaboration with Sarah Paulson (pictured), Ratched, will debut on Netflix on Sept. 18.
