The No. 1 films for the past five weeks going back to the opening of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil have grossed a total of million. This weekend, Disney’s Frozen II surpassed that number. Tracking services went on the defensive after a few weeks of high-end estimates crashed and burned. So they went with a safe 0 million projection for a sequel to the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all-time globally. Audiences responded, “Who are you kidding?”King of the Crop: Frozen II Scores Third-Best Animated Opening of All TimeThursday night, Frozen II had the fourth-best preview for an animated film ever behind Incredibles 2 (.5 million), Toy Story 4 ( million), and Finding Dory (.2 million). Take into account that those were all summer releases with no school Friday morning and Frozen II’s .5 million Thursday is even more impressive. No matter what the season its 7 million opening weekend is mightily impressive. That is the third-best animated opening of all time behind summer releases Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory. The previous best non-summer animated opening was Disney’s Zootopia with .1 million and the holiday season champion was the November release of The Incredibles (.5 million) back in 2004. Five of the eight animated films to open over 0 million went on to gross over 0 million, a feat 2013’s original Frozen managed to accomplish after starting with just .4 million (now the fourth-best November opening ever after last year’s The Grinch). Frozen II’s global haul for the weekend was 0 million as it begins its billion-dollar box office run.Rotten Returns: Cop Thriller 21 Bridges Opens with .2 MillionProfit may be well out of its reach for director Brian Kirk’s 21 Bridges. STX pushed the cop thriller with Chadwick Boseman out of the summer into September, and then moved it away from their big success, Hustlers, into the November slot where it opened with .2 million. Movies this month opening between .8 million–.8 million have averaged a final gross of .1 million and have never grossed higher than Set It Off’s .5 million. That is not good news for the million production. Only four STX films have grossed over million outside of the U.S. and Canada in its five-year history (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, The Foreigner, Bad Moms, and A Bad Moms Christmas). The studio boasted two 0 million grossers in Hustlers and The Upside this year, but no other film has reached million. Countdown reached million this weekend. The Top 10 and Beyond: A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood Opens Modestly, Primed for Holiday GrowthTom Hanks as Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was not quite the immediate audience grabber that some of us were thinking it would be, but many still hope it will be a slow burn, gaining audiences over the holiday. Though a .5 million start does not give it much chance to be the success many believed it could be. The average gross for a film opening between million– million in November is just .18 million with the high-end achieved by Three Men and a Little Lady (.6 million.) Only four other films this month in that range grossed over million: Jingle All the Way, Scrooged, Bad Santa, and My Girl. The sixth-highest grosser was Men of Honor with .8 million, and Arthur Christmas (3,376) was the only film of the 30 on this list to open in more theaters than Neighborhood (3,235).Last week’s No. 1, Ford v Ferrari dropped nearly 50 percent with million this week, bringing its total up to just under million after 10 days of release, roughly the same amount that Dumb and Dumber To reached in 2014, though it only made .1 million in its second go-round. Todd Phillips’ Due Date earned about .1 million more by this same point, made about 0,000 less than FvF in weekend two, and barely surpassed 0 million domestically. A 0 million goal means, however, that FvF will need an international haul of 0 million to break even between production and advertising costs. It currently stands at .8 million. Meanwhile, Phillips’ Joker continues to climb the all-time worldwide chart with almost 7 million domestic and 8 million international for a total of .036 billion, passing Despicable Me 3 for 36th place overall.A large group of disappointments and outright failures unfortunately make up the rest of the Top 10. At .2 million after 17 days, Roland Emmerich’s Midway has grossed less than last year’s Disney failure The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which finished with just .8 million. Even with international assistance, Midway still has not reached 0 million, which is what its production alone cost and making it one of the biggest losers of 2019. Playing with Fire and Last Christmas are still on pace for what we reported last week around million and million, respectively. And if anyone on their holiday box office card had The Good Liar making a run to outgross Charlie’s Angels, you have an appointment in Vegas. The Helen Mirren–Ian McKellen thriller is not exactly lighting things up with .7 million total to date, but it did stay steady in 7th place, while the Angels dropped back to 9th place with just .9 million total and is unlikely to hit even million. Midway is still going to take a bigger hit on the books than Elizabeth Banks’ reboot or Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep, which fell out of the Top 10 in its third weekend with just million to date, so keep that in perspective.Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters made a decent splash with 0,000 in four theaters. That amounts to the 17th-best per-theater-average of the year and the 7th-best of launches in four theaters. Also in limited release, Amazon’s Honey Boy expanded into 44 theaters this weekend and grossed 9,000. That is a bit better than Whiplash moving into 46 theaters in its third week and grossing 8,313, but is less than Anamolisa grossed going from 17-to-37 theaters (5,364) and ultimately finished with .61 million. Honey Boy has made 9,677. Both Jojo Rabbit and Parasite lost screens for the first time in their runs. They have grossed .1 and .5 million, respectively. Lulu Wang’s The Farewell still leads all releases in 2019 that did not expand to over 1,000 theaters with .6 million. Both films are in position to pass it.This Time Last Year: Sequel Fever Took Hold with Ralph Breaks the Internet, Creed II, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of GrindelwaldIt was the Thanksgiving holiday and three sequels led the five-day stretch starting with the one-two punch of Ralph Breaks the Internet (. 8 million) and Creed II ( million). Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald finished third with .4 million and crossed the 0 million mark to 6.6 million; though the film would go on to make only another million total. The Grinch was right behind in fourth with .1 million, and Bohemian Rhapsody may have fallen back to fifth with .5 million, but it also crossed the 0 million line. One of the biggest bombs of the year in Lions Gate’s Robin Hood grossed a paltry .3 million and would eventually squeeze out just over million. From Friday-to-Sunday the box office grossed a total of 3.8 million. Add in Wednesday and Turkey Day and the 5-day total rose to 8.6 million, the largest ever for the holiday. The Top 10 films also averaged 64.8% on the Tomatometer compared to this year’s Top 10, which averaged 60.5% with critics. This week’s pre-Thanksgiving total amounted to 7.52 Million. On the Vine: Knives Out for ThanksgivingRian Johnson introduces a little mystery into the holiday season with the critically acclaimed Knives Out. At 97% on the Tomatometer, the film is the best-reviewed title to date to come out of the fall festival circuit and is expected to become one of the big crowd-pleasers to close out 2019. It grossed million at 7 p.m. preview screenings on Friday and Saturday in 936 venues. Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe’s outlaw justice road movie Queen Slim, starring Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie-Turner Smith, is also doing well early with critics. Will critical support help influence its award chances more than its box office prospects for such a heavy drama during a more family-oriented time? The Full Top 10: November 22-24Frozen II (2019) 78% – 7 million (7 million total)Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92% – million (.98 million total)A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% – .5 million (.5 million total)21 Bridges (2019) 54% – .3 million (.3 million total)Midway (2019) 42% – .7 million (.1 million total)Playing With Fire (2019) 24% – .61 million (.62 million total)The Good Liar (2019) 63% – .37 million (.76 million total)Charlie's Angels (2019) 52% – .17 million (.94 million total)Last Christmas (2019) 46% – .04 million (.79 million total)Joker (2019) 68% – .82 million (6.93 million total)

(Photo by Netflix)The Best Witch TV Shows (And the Worst)It s October, so the fires are burning and cauldrons are bubbling — but it doesn’t have to be autumn to embrace all things witchy. (Of course it helps, but every season is a good season for magic.)We ve gathered our favorite television series where the occult takes center stage: Think your Sabrina the Teenage Witch(es), your Charmed sisters, even your nose-twitching suburban housewives. Not every show here is specifically about witches, but they all contain major characters of the bruja persuasion. Think: the powerful wife of time-traveling Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Red Priestess Melisandre in Game of Thrones, and Nightcomer leader Evelyn Poole on Penny Dreadful. And yeah, The Vampire Diaries was mainly about blood-sucking supernatural creatures, but witches played a major role on the series (and an even bigger one on spinoff The Originals). This isn t a ranking of the witches themselves — though you can rank your favorites here if you want! — but rather a ranking of the series on which they appear by their series-level Tomatometer score. For those shows without series scores, they re listed them alphabetically Z-A ahead of the scored shows listed below.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by ©STX Entertainment)Ryan Fujitani for Rotten Tomatoes: The Mauritanian is not the first time you ve portrayed a real person on film. Do you find that it s more freeing to play a character based on a real person because you have a template to follow? Or do you enjoy more getting to collaborate and infuse a fictional character with your own ideas?Tahar Rahim: I think right now, I d say it s, in a way, easier to portray someone who is a real life character, because the range of liberty you have is limited. They don t go all over the place. The main answers you need to know for questions about your character, you have them. And you don t have them in 100 pages, you have them from someone who s been living for years, decades, so he knows exactly what he s talking about. You don t even have to, No, you know, I think the character would answer this way. You don t have any conversation about who the guy is. He is who he is. It helps a lot.But on the other hand, the problem is that you have a responsibility to not, in a way let s use this word, and I don t know if it s the right one but to not betray that person and his identity and his personality, his life, what he s been through. You still have some freedom because he s not a famous person, but not a lot. I don t know if it feels better to play someone who s a real life character or just a character. I don t know if it feels better because it s a whole thing. It s not just about a performance, it s about your relationship with your partners, with the director, the story, the script, and the whole thing.Rotten Tomatoes: I know you met Mohamedou Ould Salahi before you shot the film. Was there anything about him that surprised you, or anything unexpected about him? Something you were able to work into your performance?Rahim: I knew about him because I read the book, I talked with [director Kevin Macdonald], I had his recordings. So I had enough materials to make my research. But I needed to meet him for other reasons, to know him and to understand the way he moves, he talks, whatever. But I was so surprised to see how funny the guy was. Everybody would say it, but I couldn t expect that he would be that funny, because sometimes he was sarcastic, sometimes just funny. That surprised me a lot.But you know, it was not just a joke. He likes to joke around. But instantly he can find a good joke that is connected to the context. It s not just written jokes; he s taking advantage of the situation and turning it into something funny. You need to be very talented to be able to do that, because it s like improvisation. It s like asking a comedian on stage to improvise. They need to improvise between their jokes, the things that are written. It s a real job. This guy has it naturally. But also, the fact that he was full of life, full of life. Very nice. When you know what he s been through, it s almost impossible to believe. The trauma is still there; he manages in some ways to control it, so you don t see it.(Photo by Graham Bartholomew/©STX Entertainment)Rotten Tomatoes: This is a difficult role for anyone, and I would ask how you would normally decompress or de-stress during shooting, but you ve said that you basically didn t, because you were afraid you would lose everything you had put into the character. Doesn t that take a bit of a toll on you?Rahim: Of course, of course. But I was lucky to shoot that abroad, to shoot this movie abroad. I was alone, with just one of my best friends. Otherwise, if this movie was shot in Paris and I had to see my family and my wife, my kids every day, it wouldn t have been possible to portray Mohamedou

mation: The medium has long opened eyes to whole new worlds, like Disney s underseen Treasure Planet. Or the trippy French classic Fantastic Planet. And even the full-length Daft Punk cosmic fantasy Interstella 5555, produced by Leiji Matsumoto, godfather of the animated space opera. His epic movies like Arcadia of My Youth and the two Galaxy Express films don t have Tomatometers so we didn t include them, but they re currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)This week’s episode of What If…?, with its double Doctor Stranges and magical madness, was a tour-de-force example of the power of the program s animation staff and further evidence of an emerging “prestige animation” format.“I think there s no denying that animation is having a moment and that new types of programs that we could not have done a few years ago, either because just the industry wouldn t go for it or because the technology wasn t there, is happening now,” What If ? animation supervisor Stephan Franck said when Rotten Tomatoes had a chance to talk to him and other members of the production team recently.“I sure hope so,” added production designer Paul Lasaine. “It’s been a long time coming, in the US, anyway.”While animation is varied in terms of genres, formats, and technical sophistication in other parts of the world, the United States market still aims most of its animation at all-ages demographics or younger children – not that this stops some adults from admiring available programs or appreciating the work involved in creating these shows. But What If…? definitely continues a trend toward sophistication in terms of story and craft roughly analogous to high-end, live-action series.“The directive we had from the studio was to push the limits, to really see how far animation can be pushed,” editor Graham Fisher said. “I think that as an anthology, it s probably one of the ambitious animated shows that s ever been made, just because you re going to see, as more and more episodes come out, no holds were barred in the making of the show. It s impossibly complicated.”Here we chat with some of the people who manage the complexity of What If…? and deliver that ambitious, prestige-style animation.Designing the Characters(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)For Ryan Meinerding, character designer and head of visual development, part of the fun is “starting from that firm ground of how people understand the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe” and either building on those strong graphic designs or subverting them. “If you mix them, if you change a character, if you want to take a component of T Challa, meaning like his necklace, and sort of put that into a Star-Lord context, it allows you to be subtle.”On the other hand, the wicked Doctor Strange seen this week offered an opportunity to be more obvious in changing a Marvel icon. “[We could] do sort of classic, pointier chins and sharper shapes in the collar, and in a slightly darker costume while [Strange is] sort of gaunt in the face.” The result: a demonic take on the usually heroic character worthy of the wilder outcomes inherent to What If…?.“‘What if Dr. Strange busted his heart instead of his hands?’ meant that we could create that evil Dr. Strange in a very, very straightforward way,” Meinerding said. “I think one of the things that was super fun for me was having him go down that more evil road. By taking in those additional creatures to become more powerful, [there was] also a specific cost to him that he couldn t control at the end of that episode we saw the fun of that spiral spiraling out of control. Evil Strange exemplifies one of the great aspects of the show for Meinerding. As he put it, “so many of the conceits of each episode is really tied up with the design.”Although most of the characters on the series have their design origins in the live-action features, Meinerding relished the chance to visually define The Watcher and work him into unexpected moments in each episode. “The idea [is] that he s often painted into backgrounds, literally. Or, the notion that you re looking at him, and seeing the silhouette that s painted or executed with time and space,” he explained. “I think that s one of the more fun design challenges of the show: ‘How do we create a Watcher that feels like he s in every episode, but then you might have to look really hard to find him?’ Creating the Performances (Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Animation is full of obscure terms which, to even the enthusiast, are hard to keep straight. So a term like “animation supervisor” may sound like a purely administrative post. But according to Franck, his primary role on the series is far more direct: he aids the animation team in crafting the visual performances of the characters.“When you re doing an animated movie or TV show, you have half of the acting performance that is coming from the voice,” he explained. “They re creating a moment, they re getting everything you need to know about that moment and that scene. But it only exists [audibly]. So the animators think of themselves as actors who create the visual part of that performance.”Listening closely to those vocal tracks, it becomes the purview of the animator to determine the “look” of those sounds on a character’s face or how it translates into their movements. “[The actor] said it this way, is it one of those moments where she s saying what she means or is she lying? Or is it sarcastic? It s trying to really live [the moment], you just put yourself inside the performance and you re recreating the visual aspect of it.”In terms of the supervisor role, Franck works with all the animators to create those acting choices, whether it s through the movement or through the poses, and discover if it is the right one for the moment on screen. An example of those choices can be seen this week as Strange s expressions and body language reflect his increasing frustration about his inability to prevent the accident. But it is just one example of the 7,000 or so shots Franck supervised across the first season. “Every frame is important,” he said. So even small changes will make a scene that you think, ‘Yeah, I guess it s working’ [turn into] something more like, Wow!' Getting to that visceral reaction is always the goal.Showcasing the Environments(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)What If…? is also a wonderful showcase of Marvel’s expansive environments – from intergalactic bars to the Lost Library of Cagliostro. The person in charge of designing those landscapes is production designer Paul Lasaine. Working in the Marvel Multiverse means some of those locations will have certain Jack Kirby- or, in the case of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko-feel to them – although Lasaine noted that creating the feel of What If…? as an animated series required a wider scope of reference material to get to its signature atmosphere. For one thing: The program s overall visual feel is inspired by the work of Saturday Evening Post cover artist J.C. Leyendecker, although Lasaine said that was “a beginning” of the show’s style. “If you look at Leyendecker and you look at our stuff, it s like, ‘Okay, I can kind of see it.’ It s not priority, it s its own thing. We started with that, and then we evolve into our final look, which is where we are at today.”The Kirby vibes, meanwhile, come out mostly in the look of the characters, although Lasaine pointed to the pulsating, bubbly energy effect known as “Kirby Crackle” as the most direct reference his team pulls from the legendary artist. “If we re trying to do [that] effect, then we re definitely looking at Kirby,” he said. But as his department is concerned with giving the show some of its more cinematic feel, they also look to the work of live action cinematographers like Roger Deakins (Skyfall) and Darius Kondji (Seven). The results lead to the colors used and the sense of smoke or atmosphere in What If…?’s take on the Sanctum Santorum or the “trippy hellscape” Strange enters to absorb demonic beings, to say nothing of the Lost Library itself, one of the locations Lasaine and his team built specifically for Episode 4.Cutting the Action

Best-Reviewed Documentaries 2019As one look at the best-reviewed documentary films will reveal, sometimes the most compelling stories are the ones that emerge from real experiences. Peter Jackson impressed literally everyone with They Shall Not Grow Old, his extraordinary restoration of World War I footage, and we got insightful looks at a musical icon (Amazing Grace), the U.S. political process (Knock Down the House), and a groundbreaking crew of female sailors (Maiden). At the top of the list, however, sits an incredibly crafted look at the Apollo 11 space mission that draws viewers in with amazing visuals and a gripping narrative. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2019. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as The Accountant 2, The Color Purple, Megalopolis, Salem s Lot.This WEEK S TOP STORYDISNEY IS ALREADY DEVELOPING ANOTHER JUNGLE CRUISE(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)This past summer, as both the Delta variant and day-and-date streaming strategies impacted the box office of several films, it s perhaps easy not to notice that films like Free Guy (Certified Fresh at 81%) and Jungle Cruise (Fresh at 62%), which did have free streaming competition, fared relatively well. Disney s Jungle Cruise, for example, despite all of its obstacles, has still managed to earn 0 million domestic, which, with everything else going on, is good enough that Walt Disney Pictures is indeed moving forward with plans for a sequel. Both Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are expected to return (sequel options were probably already in their contracts), as are director Jaume Collet-Serra and co-writer Michael Green, who is officially the first creative back to work on the sequel. What Disney is not disclosing just yet is what the sequel could be about, or where it could be set (another river, or something else?). Disney certainly has plenty of other popular theme park attractions that could be adapted to fit the Jungle Cruise format with the same cast, such as say, Disney s Animal Kingdom. Among the projects Dwayne Johnson has coming soon are Netflix s Red Notice, the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets (5/20/2022), and the DC Comics adaptation Black Adam (7/29/2022), also directed by Jauime Collet-Serra.Other Top Headlines1. FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA MAY FINALLY GET HIS MEGALOPOLIS DREAM PROJECT MADE(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics)Many films take years to get made, while some are abandoned altogether. One of the projects with the longest film development phase is Megalopolis, which Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) first started back in the 1980s (yes, nearly 40 years ago). Coppola s difficulty in getting Megalopolis going is especially noteworthy considering his status as a successful film producer, but the ambition and budget is usually cited as the biggest obstacle to the film getting greenlit (as well as similarities to the events of 9/11). Now 82 years old, Coppola has decided to throw his own money behind finally getting Megalopolis produced. The ambitious sci-fi epic about a futuristic city architect may have an impressive cast as well, as the actors Coppola has reportedly met with include Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, Forest Whitaker, James Caan, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Voight, and Zendaya (and there will reportedly be many other roles for big names). Francis Ford Coppola reportedly has new liquidity with which to fund Megalopolis because of the recent sale of his Sonoma vineyards.2. POP STAR H.E.R. TO MAKE FEATURE ACTING DEBUT IN THE COLOR PURPLE REMAKE (Photo by Paras Griffin/Getty Images)The two actresses that left the biggest impressions in Steven Spielberg s original adaptation of the Alice Walker novel The Color Purple (Fresh at 81%) were probably Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, but the film does have several strong female roles. Warner Bros. is currently well into pre-production on a big-screen adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical (adapted from Walker s novel). Blitz Bazaule (Black is King) is directing and currently casting up, but the only name we knew before this week was Corey Hawkins (In the Heights), who will play Harpo. The second cast member announced is four-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter H.E.R., who will be playing Squeak, the meek wife of Hawkins character (played by Rae Dawn Chong in the first film). Major roles yet to be cast include Celie (Whoopi Goldberg in the first film), Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), and Mister (Danny Glover). Warner Bros. has already scheduled The Color Purple for release on December 20, 2023.3. SIGOURNEY WEAVER TO BE PAUL SCHRADER S MASTER GARDENER (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)For some Martin Scorsese fans, Paul Schrader may always be best known as the screenwriter behind early Scorsese successes like Taxi Driver (Certified Fresh at  96%) and Raging Bull (Certified Fresh at 93%), but Schrader has stayed busy as a writer and director. He found success in 2017 with the Ethan Hawke priest drama First Reformed (Certified Fresh at 93%) and his film The Card Counter, starring Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish, started its festival circuit run at Venice this week. With all that going on, Schrader is already quickly moving onto his next film, a thriller called Master Gardener. Joel Edgerton will play the title character, who works on the estate of a wealthy woman played by Sigourney Weaver, who requests he take on her troubled great niece as an apprentice, which upends his life, threatening to draw him back to his violent past. The role of the niece has apparently not been cast yet.4. CAPTAIN MARVEL CO-STAR LASHANA LYNCH JOINS HISTORICAL EPIC THE WOMAN KING (Photo by David M. Benett/Getty Images)Last summer, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Viola Davis was set to team up with director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) for the historical epic The Woman King, about the leader of an all-woman military branch of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries in Africa (in what is now Benin). The film appears closer to getting its greenlight from TriStar Pictures, as this week, Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch also joined the cast of The Woman King. Davis will play the general in charge, with Lynch playing a charming veteran warrior, and relative newcomer Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad) playing an ambitious recruit. 5. STEPHEN KING S SALEM S LOT FINALLY GETTING ITS FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Adaptations of Stephen King novels and short stories became so ubiquitous in the 1980s that it s almost hard to believe that before The Shining (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out in 1980, Carrie (Certified Fresh at 93%) was the only movie adapted from a Stephen King novel. That may have led to the strange circumstance in which King s second horror novel, the deconstruction of the vampire myth Salem s Lot, was adapted not as a movie but as a TV mini-series. There have been other versions of  Salem s Lot on TV since, but we re just now finally getting a Salem s Lot feature film. The film is quickly casting up this week, with three announcements in a row, starting with Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, and Spencer Treat Clark. Lewis Pullman (TV s Catch-22) was then announced as the film s lead, as an author who is basically Stephen King s stand-in. Then, most recently, Alfre Woodard also signed on for the doctor role (who was a male in the novel), who is sort of the Dr. Van Helsing of the story.6. JOHN MALKOVICH LEADS INDIE HORROR FILM CUCKOO (Photo by Aaron Epstein/©Netflix)NEON is an indie distributor that since 2017 has given us such films as Colossal (Certified Fresh at 81%), Ingrid Goes West (Certified Fresh at 86%), I Tonya (Certified Fresh at 90%), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Certified Fresh at 98%), and the Academy Award Best Picture winner Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%), among others. A few of those indicate that NEON tends to favor darkly humorous films, but this week, their new project Cuckoo is described as a straightforward horror film, suggesting something in the vein of A24 movies like Midsommar and The Witch. The premise is being kept basically secret, but we do know that the leads will be John Malkovich and Hunter Schafer (HBO s Euphoria), with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Gemma Chan (Marvel s upcoming Eternals) apparently in supporting roles.7. WARNER BROS. DID THE BOX OFFICE MATH AND MOVES FORWARD WITH THE ACCOUNTANT 2 (Photo by ©Warner bros.)After having a critical and box office hit with David Fincher s Gone Girl (Certified Fresh at 87%) in 2014, Ben Affleck s film output hit sort of a rough patch starting in 2016 that included both his Justice League movies and his non-Batman roles like The Accountant (Rotten at 52%) and Live by Night (Rotten at 34%). Despite that Tomatometer score, The Accountant did earn 5 million worldwide from a relatively modest budget of million, which was apparently good enough for Warner Bros. to give the go-ahead for a sequel. Gavin O Connor (who also directed Affleck in The Way Back) confirmed this week that Warner Bros. has officially started development on a sequel to The Accountant. Jon Bernthal s role is described as being more significant, though it s worth noting that neither Affleck nor Bernthal are signed for the sequel as of yet. At the same time, O Connor clarified that there will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel. 8. NO, NO, NOT THE BEES: JASON STATHAM ALL ABUZZ ABOUT THE BEE KEEPER (Photo by Warner Bros.)Since reinventing his screen persona with Taken, Liam Neeson has essentially created a new genre of action films that could easily be defined as Liam Neeson as insert-profession-here , such as Cold Pursuit (Liam Neeson as a snow plow driver) and The Ice Road (Liam Neeson as an ice road trucker). This story is actually about a new Jason Statham movie, but the idea behind it sounds like one of those Neeson projects, because it s Jason Statham as The Bee Keeper. The premise is being kept secret, but it s described as a lightning-paced thriller deeply steeped in the mythology of bee keeping. Yes, really. One has to wonder if Statham saw the Nicolas Cage remake of The Wicker Man (Rotten at 15%), and thought, yes, that, but it s me kicking ass and making bee puns. We should see what all the buzz is about in 2023 or so.9. THIS WEEK IN JASON STATHAM PART 2: THE EXPENDABLES 4 RECRUITS MEGAN FOX, 50 CENT, AND TONY JAA (Photo by Phil Bray/©Lionsgate)One of the appeals of an ensemble-dependent action franchise like The Expendables is that each new film introduces new stars (keeping in mind that the first film itself had over a dozen of them). The Expendables 2 (Fresh at 67%) brought in Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, while The Expendables 3 (Rotten at 32%) added Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Wesley Snipes. There will be at least 8 years between The Expendables 3 in 2014 and whenever The Expendables 4 comes out (probably 2022 or 2023), but the fourth one is indeed happening. The new cast members will include Megan Fox (Transformers), rapper-turned-actor 50 Cent, and  Tony Jaa, and they ll be joined by Expendables alumni Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. It s unclear if there will be other new cast members who haven t yet been announced. The Expendables 4 will be directed by stuntman-turned-director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor, Need for Speed). On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
