Director Dan Gilroy re-teams with his Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo for another twisted movie, this time mixing together horror with satire for a gory takedown of the art world. Velvet Buzzsaw, which arrives soon on Netflix, debuted this weekend at Sundance to mostly favorable reviews, which celebrate the camp performances and the execution of a wild premise involving deadly paintings. Here’s what the critics are saying about Velvet Buzzsaw:How would one describe Velvet Buzzsaw?A high-end Final Destination… best viewed as pure horror camp. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsA slasher movie with something to say. Matt Goldberg, ColliderA tarted-up throwback to a certain kind of trashy ’70s horror movie — a la Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? or Theater of Blood. Peter Debruge, VarietyIt’s like Bret Easton Ellis meeting John Carpenter in the bathroom at Art Basel. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyA work of art in its own right. You’ve never seen anything quite like Velvet Buzzsaw. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmNothing if not unique, it’s an utterly bizarre film that could only have ever been made for a streamer like Netflix. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumVelvet Buzzsaw is certainly unlike anything else you’re going to see this year on Netflix or any other streaming service. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comThis is a film that can’t be described. It simply has to be experienced for all the senses. Karen M. Peterson, AwardsCircuit.com(Photo by Netflix)But is it any good?Velvet Buzzsaw is a blast from start to finish. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThis movie is so preposterous, so profoundly weird, just hilarious and merciless and black-hearted from beginning to end. Meredith Borders, Bloody DisgustingVelvet is fun and silly and enjoyably outrageous. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyThe sillier and bloodier it gets, the better. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsThere’s some kind of poetry to [what] he’s made here: a trashy thriller set in the world of high art. Dan Mecca, The Film StageEvery element combines to make this a polished, glossy film that feels as expensive as the creations within it. Karen M. Peterson, AwardsCircuit.comEven if Velvet Buzzsaw starts to sputter slightly after it’s made its point, it’s plenty exciting to witness the incredibly specific madness they whip up together. Emily Yoshida, VultureIt’s all somewhat amusing but rather arch. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterGilroy’s film needed to be 60% better or 20% worse in order to transcend the forgettable silliness of its existence. Dave Ehrlich, IndieWireFor lack of a better descriptor, the whole thing is a mess. Gregory Ellwood, The Playlist(Photo by Netflix)How does it compare to Nightcrawler?[It’s] a fitting companion piece to Nightcrawler. Peter Debruge, VarietyIt’s missing the weight of Nightcrawler, but that feels right. Meredith Borders, Bloody DisgustingVelvet Buzzsaw, as gleaming and sun-drenched as Nightcrawler is dark, is even more of an invective, and even more operatically heightened. Emily Yoshida, VultureVelvet Buzzsaw is worlds removed from Nightcrawler. While Nightcrawler was going for cerebral thrills, Velvet Buzzsaw is trafficking in gore-soaked comedy. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmHow is Jake Gyllenhaal s performance? There’s never a moment when he’s not chewing scenery, but it works for the vibe of the film. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie Emporium[He’s] relishing another of those cartoonishly camp performances he’s increasingly drawn to in his middle age. Peter Debruge, VarietyGyllenhaal, who continues his transformation into full-blown quirky character actor, is a hoot. Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm[It’s ] a performance so big that it might not be able to fit on the screen of your iPhone. Dave Ehrlich, IndieWireDoes anyone else stand out?Every single performance is hilarious and memorable. Meredith Borders, Bloody DisgustingJohn Malkovich also shows up in an enjoyable cameo. Anthony Kaufman, Screen International(Photo by Netflix)What else can we look forward to?Velvet Buzzsaw is a terrific-looking film, with striking interiors and city vistas. Meredith Borders, Bloody DisgustingThe costumes are delightful and come to life in Robert Elswit’s art pop light. Dave Ehrlich, IndieWireCostume designers Trish Summerville and Isis Mussenden provide some inspired ensembles. Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylistIsis Mussenden and Trish Summerville’s nouveau-fashion costumes and James D. Bissell’s elaborate production design also help to create a full-scale and highly detailed send-up of the film’s high-brow milieu. Anthony Kaufman, Screen InternationalIt’s also an ambitious piece of work with unforgettable imagery and an ace ensemble. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comGyllenhaal’s Morf enters some kind of pantheon of quotably absurd characters alongside, say, Christopher Guest in Waiting for Guffman and all the Heathers. Emily Yoshida, VultureIs the satire effective?I would ve preferred a much stronger take from Gilroy than what we get here. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsVelvet Buzzsaw would have been more effective as pure satire, as Gilroy doesn’t seem to have  an affinity for the [horror] genre. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumIt’s all very low common denominator humor centered on art world cliches. Gregory Ellwood, The PlaylistThere’s nothing lampooned here that we haven’t already seen before. Anthony Kaufman, Screen InternationalIf this movie tried to carry itself as a highbrow critique, it would be far more difficult to appreciate Gilroy’s point of view. Matt Goldberg, ColliderSuch fangless satire suggests that Gilroy is either unfamiliar with the art world, or loves it too much to dig any deeper. Dave Ehrlich, IndieWireWould a smarter film with more of a message be better? Maybe, but it probably wouldn’t be this off-the-wall, and what a tragedy that would be. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmIs it still a good horror movie?[There’s] insane gore and even supernatural horror… once his paintings start, well, literally killing people, it becomes a full-blown riot. Meredith Borders, Bloody DisgustingVelvet Buzzsaw is unabashedly supernatural in its horror, with mixed results. Emily Yoshida, VultureIt’s a horror show that lacks broader social commentary; a handful of bloody murders and occasional jump-scares, with the occasional astute one-liner. Anthony Kaufman, Screen InternationalVelvet Buzzsaw streams on Netflix beginning on February 1.

Of all the directors on this list, the one that will likely benefit most from this strange season is Eliza Hittman. Her drama, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, a BBC production distributed by Focus Features shortly after the pandemic hit, is a quiet indie about two girls who travel from Pennsylvania to New York to seek an abortion. It cements Hittman as more than just an indie darling and pushes her forward as one of the best up-and-coming female directors in Hollywood. The film is a difficult watch, which also makes it difficult to promote with glitzy cocktail parties, given its serious subject matter not that anyone is throwing any glitzy cocktail parties anytime soon. But it’s undeniably moving, and it has serious social and political resonance – both of which rank high with Academy voters. Following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a renewed focus on the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, Never Rarely Sometimes Always can build a compelling narrative on why it is the movie of the moment and worthy of recognition. In a typical year, a low-budget indie with no stars that premiered in the first half of the year would have difficulty staying in the conversation. However, as voters will have time and opportunity to watch titles from the comfort of their homes, it’s reasonable to think they will be able to see smaller hidden gems like this.Chloé Zhao

surroundings. The show itself created all of these little definitions and buzzwords to categorize when people do certain things (“close talker,” etc.) that has since given us a lexicon to understand that behavior. It also encouraged us to do that in our own lives, so it not only created this vocabulary to understand the world but inspired us to expand it. And it, of course, deeply entertained us with each new reminder how times may change, methods of communication change, how we process the world may change, but what we do within that understanding really doesn’t change all that much. Which feels like a suitably bittersweet lesson for the show’s misanthropic view to impart.Allison Keene,  TV Editor, Paste Magazine: The nothing-ness of the show encompasses all of the little universal experiences and pet peeves and desires that transcend its time and place. Seinfeld is wacky, hilarious, and incredibly smart, but the conversations and arguments and observations remain with us because we ve experienced them, too. The touchstones of the series — whether it be low-talkers or seeing someone sneeze while naked or the results of The Contest, etc. — all speak to the fleeting, mundane thoughts we have, but here they are augmented into something important and meaningful. Seinfeld gave context and importance to life s weirdness, and that s why it still resonates today.(Photo by Castle Rock Entertainment/Courtesy Everett Collection)Liz Shannon Miller, freelance TV critic for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and The AV Club: It s strange to look back at Seinfeld and realize just how much of an impact it had on pop culture, an impact that still resonates today with phrases we use. They re real and they re spectacular is still something I say on a semi-regular basis, just because after 20 years or so, certain phrases get hardwired into not just our brains, but society itself. In the future, as we cluster around trash fires in the ruins of civilization, someone somewhere will probably tell a friend, No soup for you! Even if the context is lost, the meaning will endure.Peter Mehlman, writer and producer for Seinfeld: For the most part, [the show s most quotable lines] just came organically. In the case of double dip … it doesn t take any big genius to come up with that. With some of the others, like master of my domain and sponge-worthy, they were more creative and brilliant — they just came up as a natural bit of writing. It wasn t a concerted effort to come up with new terms for things. There was no poignant moment ever in a script — it was all about just being funny.Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything: In many ways both social media and streaming have bolstered Seinfeld s legacy. The show and its characters lend themselves well to memes, and several sites, artists, and internet personalities have dedicated themselves to keeping Seinfeld alive. In 2013 a street artist named Jayshells made a reproduction of the poster for Rochelle, Rochelle, one of Seinfeld s fake movies, and put it up in Manhattan. Photos of it went viral online. We had @SeinfeldToday on Twitter, which pitched ideas for plots that could be on a modern version of Seinfeld. And we still have @seinfeld2000 on Twitter, an internet character obsessed with getting Seinfeld back on the air. (He s a creation of a TV producer named Jason Richards.)The characters were hilariously specific and oddly relatable(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Gilchrist: Their personalities don’t always translate directly to ourselves or our circle of friends, but the behavior of Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer is deeply recognizable to us, and quite often in an unflattering way. We’ve all made choices, had social gaffes, and discovered little superficial patterns of behavior that became ridiculous pet peeves among both the people we cannot stand and the people with whom we’re the closest. We become our own obstacles to happiness because we can’t put aside those things — discarding friendships, relationships, and business exchanges because of an infringement that crossed an imaginary line in the sand. We may even be technically right to do so! But the wonderful thing about the show is that as entertaining as it is for us to watch, those decisions very seldom brought the characters greater or lasting happiness. Mostly, just the opposite.Tom Nunan, Oscar-winning producer and lecturer at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television: It s so funny because these characters are so relatable. And everything about them seemed kind of right down-the-middle: The way they dressed and where they lived, everything was pretty ordinary-looking. They never tried to make it feel like fantasy. The Friends apartment just seemed like a fantasy version of being 20 years old in New York. Everything about Seinfeld s world was really kind of drab, and I think that s why we relate to it so much more. It was obviously a super-sophisticated, brilliantly-executed show, but they made it all look so normal, and I think that s what makes it so popular.Rick Porter, staff writer, The Hollywood Reporter: Because it was so huge in its time, it seeped into the larger culture in a pretty big way, from yada yada to master of your domain and having fundamentally unlikable people be the center of a show. It probably doesn t get enough credit for the last part, but the characters were all low-key awful a good half-decade before The Sopranos.Armstrong: As horrible as they were, why did we love them? They re just really well-defined. Part of the reason people loved @SeinfeldToday so much was that they loved imagining these characters in modern scenarios, and that s because we know them so well that it s easy to imagine what Kramer might do with Amazon or Elaine might get into on Tinder. These characters — and many who came after them — are proof that viewers aren t particularly interested in watching characters because they re good people. They want to watch characters who are interesting, and interesting people are often somewhere between imperfect and awful.Mehlman: It was before political correctness got completely out of hand, you know? There was a certain kind of innocence about it. Because it s all about just being funny, and just observing the world and not really making points. Characters on shows now are basically so good to each other and if they are not, they apologize. On Seinfeld, they screwed each other over every single week and remained best of friends the next week.Seinfeld disrupted the TV sitcom formula(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Nunan: The ambition that Jerry and Larry had for this — these multiple story lines and multiple scenes per episode — mixed with a cast that was a murderer s row of phenomenal, superstar comic talent … that kind of magic is rare. And then there s that old saying that this is a show about nothing. In other words, it s not about family cohesion; it s not about romantic comedy; it s not about politics. It s about what Jerry Seinfeld became known for as a comedian before ever signing onto his own show, which was about the little observations in life — these little things that are universal and that we all share in common.Thompson: It wasn t really about nothing. It was just about different things that television generally didn t deal with. It was about the kind of details of daily life that people go through. For example, the classic Chinese Restaurant episode that was not something about nothing, it was about something we very much deal with on a daily basis: waiting in line for a restaurant.Mehlman: You know, we didn t have a writers room. You basically pitched ideas to Larry and Jerry for each of the characters. They d say, I like that, or, I m not crazy about that. And you d go off and write on your own. The very first script I wrote for the show [was The Apartment ]. It was the first outside script they produced and it was just about Jerry absentmindedly telling Elaine that an apartment opened up in her building. That was the whole thing that they sent me off with. I added in this whole story about George going to a party wearing a wedding ring to see if it would really attract women. I just added that in as I was writing. And Larry and Jerry had no idea what that was going to be.The jokes were the priority, and no topic was off-limits(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Porter: I think it s the template for most of the hangout comedies that followed it. Stakes are never terribly high, which allows more room for jokes and bits of character work and giving everyone in the core cast their time to shine. You can see its DNA in everything from Friends to Happy Endings to The Big Bang Theory. The low stakes and jokes-over-all ethos of the show also gives it a more timeless feel. They all have landlines and stuff, but with a handful of exceptions, stories don t hinge on things that are so of their time that it feels dated. There s a B-story in one episode where Jerry taped a Mets game and doesn t want to know the score before he gets home to watch it, which How I Met Your Mother riffed on in a Super Bowl–themed episode and this still plays well in the current spoiler-phobic era.Mehlman: It was a very male-centric show. I think the big upside of that is that you got to see conversations in mixed company that you never saw before. You know, we got to talk about anything. So I think that made a lot of people feel kind of liberated. It was kind of a very male show, yet, I always felt that if you didn t have a good Elaine story, or if Julia didn t have a big part in an episode, there was no way it could be a great episode. All the great episodes needed to have really strong Elaine stories or you were in trouble.Seinfeld is available to watch by subscription on Hulu and to purchase in its entirety on FandangoNow, Amazon.com, iTunes, and other sites where you buy video on demand.

The cast of the Amazon superhero show The Boys got together for a Comic-Con@Home panel about the upcoming Season 2 (9/4/2020), including a look at an action-packed scene featuring The Deep (Chace Crawford) riding atop a massive whale (apparently a real prop). In addition to the returning cast members from Season 1, the panel also featured Aya Cash, who is joining the show in Season 2 as the superheroine Stormfront. Towards the end, producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg joined the fun to announce that Amazon has already picked up the show for a third season, although Rogen had to say, When can we film season 3? Anyone s guess! Hope sometime this decade. Aisha Tyler, who hosted the panel, was also announced to be the host of a new aftershow called Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys, which will debut online on August 28 with a special recapping the events of Season 1.

Ghcxuf 2. HALLOWEEN KILLS IN 2020, AND HALLOWEEN ENDS IN 2021 Ryan FujitaniFollowing the 9 million domestic box office of last year s soft reboot of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions quickly confirmed plans for at least one more Halloween sequel. More recently, it was confirmed first that Jamie Lee Curtis will be returning, and that actually it would be two sequels that will be filming back-to-back. This week, Universal and Blumhouse made it official by announcing that the sequels will be titled Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Both sequels will have the same director, David Gordon Green, who co-wrote them with actor Danny McBride, who also co-wrote last year s Halloween with Green.3. BEN AFFLECK AND MATT DAMON TO REUNITE FOR RIDLEY SCOTT S THE LAST DUEL (Photo by Sara Cozolino/Everett Collection)Before he directed films like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator, Ridley Scott made his directorial debut in 1977 with The Duellists, about French officers during the Napoleonic Wars engaged in a series of duels in the early 1800s. Things came full circle this week with the news that Scott is now attached to direct The Last Duel, which is set in 14th century France (the distinction here is that The Last Duel concerns a medieval trial-by-combat between knights). The Last Duel will also be a reunion project for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who will co-star and co-write (along with Nicole Holofcener). This week, Damon also signed on to star in an independent drama called Stillwater, which will also be set in France.4. WALKING DEAD SPINOFF MOVIE GETS THEATRICAL RELEASE(Photo by AMC)When Andrew Lincoln s Rick Grimes got on a helicopter last year and flew away from The Walking Dead, it was quickly announced that AMC had plans for a series of spinoff movies about the continuing adventures of Rick Grimes. At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, the first teaser trailer for a Walking Dead movie debuted, but the biggest surprise had nothing to do with new plot twists. Instead, the surprise was that Universal Pictures has picked up the Walking Dead movie for theatrical distribution (i.e. not just as an AMC movie). The plan is still for three movies starring Andrew Lincoln, with Lincoln expected to spend two months on each movie. Andrew Lincoln also signed on this week to join Naomi Watts in Penguin Bloom, playing Watts husband as their family befriends an injured Australian magpie chick (bird).5. JAVIER BARDEM EXPECTED TO PLAY KING TRITON IN THE LITTLE MERMAID (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Following the casting earlier this month of Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney s live action remake of The Little Mermaid, fans quickly began speculating about who might play her father, King Triton. Most fans picked black actors, with Idris Elba being a popular choice, but some also chose Terry Crews. As it turns out, Disney instead went with Academy Award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales). In the original animated movie, King Triton does not have his own song (he does have one in the stage musical called The World Above ), so it s probably likely that Bardem won t be singing in the live-action version either.6. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH TO PORTRAY BRITISH ARTIST LOUIS WAIN(Photo by Jack English/© Weinstein Co.)The Cassius Marcellus Coolidge painting series Dogs Playing Poker is something of an iconic example of American kitsch. Around the same time in England, however, the artist Louis Wain had a similar series of paintings of cats that frequently had Big Eyes (a la Keane), exaggerated toothy smiles, or early examples of psychedelic art. It s crazy stuff, and now Benedict Cumberbatch (whose Doctor Strange also dabbled in psychedelia) is signed to star in the biopic Louis Wain for Amazon Studios. Cumberbatch s co-stars will include Claire Foy, Toby Jones, and Andrea Riseborough.7. HOPEFULLY JENNIFER LAWRENCE WON T GET STITCHES AS THE MOB GIRL(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Now that Dark Phoenix (Rotten at 23%) is done and over with, Jennifer Lawrence s time in the X-Men franchise is officially done, leaving her with no ongoing franchise (since The Hunger Games ended in 2015, and last year s Red Sparrow was a non-starter). It may well be that Lawrence will soon find another, but for now, she appears to be aiming for smaller movies. With that in mind, Jennifer Lawrence is now attached to star in Mob Girl, based on Teresa Carpenter s novel which was itself based on the true story of 1970s and 1980s mob informant Arlyne Weiss-Brickman. Mob Girl will reportedly depict how Weiss-Brickman grew up around wise guys, including running errands for them, but decided to cooperate with the FBI after a loan shark threatened to harm her teenage daughter. (Jennifer Lawrence is only 28 years old, so her daughter may be younger in this movie version.)8. CHRIS ROCK S SAW SPINOFF BUMPED UP FIVE MONTHS TO BE A BIG SUMMER RELEASE (Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)One factor (besides, you know, all the torture) that has united all movies in the Saw franchise to date has been the release date, which has always been between October 23rd (Saw VI) and October 29th (Saw and Saw 3D). So, when Chris Rock announced that he was producing and starring in a Saw spinoff (sometimes called The Organ Donor online), the presumed release date was in October of 2020. Perhaps tying into the film s premise as a Saw spinoff and not a Saw movie exactly, Lionsgate this week bumped up Chris Rock s film to a release date of May 15, 2020 (against the Scooby-Doo reboot Scoob). Rock will star in the film as a police detective investigating a series of gruesome crimes, with Samuel L. Jackson also on board to play Rock s character s father.9. JENNIFER LOPEZ MAY DIRECT (HERSELF IN) THE GODMOTHER  (Photo by Peter Iovino/©CBS Films)The ensemble stripper crime comedy Hustlers (9/13/2019) is now less than two months away, but one of its stars, Jennifer Lopez, is already preparing for new films in 2020 and beyond. Following flops like UglyDolls, Poms, and Best of Enemies, STX Entertainment is reportedly looking for big stars for their next moves, and one of them is going to be Jennifer Lopez. Jenny from the Block is now producing and will star in a drug lord drama called The Godmother for STXfilms. Lopez may also make her directorial debut with the film, in which she plays real life Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, who was (real life spoiler warning) shot and killed in 2012 at the age of 69 (Jennifer Lopez is only 50). Lopez s next film after Hustlers will be the romantic comedy Marry Me, costarring Owen Wilson. This week, the Marry Me cast expanded as Lopez and Wilson will now be joined by Sarah Silverman and British actor John Bradley, who has a lot more time on his hands now that his run as Samwell Tarly on HBO s Game of Thrones is done.Like this?

.@DanaiGurira confirms #TheWalkingDead Season 10 will be her last, says her heart will never leave. “TWD Family is forever, and it never ends. It was a very difficult decision, but it was about my calling and other opportunities I wanted to explore.” #SkyboundSDCC pic.twitter.com/qIPbAtZVWo The Walking Dead (@TheWalkingDead) July 19, 2019Major Walking Dead news out of Hall H: First, Danai Gurira, a.k.a. Michonne, confirmed that she ll be leaving the series in the upcoming tenth season. By the way — creator Robert Kirkman confirmed that just because the comic series has ended does not mean the show is going anywhere any time soon. As Gurira exits, Thora Birch and Kevin Carroll are joining the cast for season 10. According to executive producer Gale Ann Hurd, Birch is playing Gamma, a Whisperer who is fiercely protective of Alpha, and Carroll is a new character named Virgil who encounters some of our group. He’s going to be desperately trying to get home to his family. The season will contain the comic story line The Whisperer War. And most importantly, you can watch the action-packed season 10 trailer, which debuted at the panel, right now.Another important bit of information: The three movies starring now-departed lead Andrew Lincoln that were originally supposed to air on AMC will instead be released theatrically.Rick Grimes is returning to #TheWalkingDead in an untitled movie coming exclusively to theaters. pic.twitter.com/NMZbfq8nEN Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) July 20, 2019They Laughed, They Cried, They Drank Out of Cups Like That of the Now-Infamous Game of Thrones Coffee Cup–Gate IncidentGame of Thrones cast members took the Comic-Con Hall H stage to say farewell and thank fans for 10 years of support.  Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Liam Cunningham, Jacob Anderson, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Conleth Hill, and John Bradley recalled some of their finest moments and favorite quotes from the series. As moderator James Hibberd of EW noted at the outset, there were no spoilers to avoid.“For the record, I loved all my ten years on #GameofThrones it was a life-changing experience.” Conleth Hill on the series. #GoTSDCC Game of Thrones (@GameOfThrones) July 20, 2019We ll return with more on this panel and some of the more meaningful moments and controversial statements; for one, Bradley still refuses to accept blame for that other now-infamous incident with the water-bottle.Veronica Mars Releases Season 4 a Week EarlyThe crowd in Ballroom 20 was already psyched that their favorite private detective and her friends got the gang back together for a fourth season on Hulu 10 years after the series originally ended, but Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell made the reunion panel, which featured a screening of the revival s first episode, even sweeter for her Marshmallows: as a birthday present for Bell, Hulu released all eight episodes of the season a week early. The Dark Crystal Wait Is Almost OverIt s only been a 37-year wait for Netflix s upcoming series Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which hits the streaming service August 30. It was Netflix who championed the idea of a prequel series featuring the puppet aesthetic from the classic film, Lisa Henson shared with select members of the press earlier in the day.Though there will be some CG effects featured, director Louis Laterrier explained they will just be there to enhance it here and there. The cast features plenty of big names, who all came together with a shared love of Henson s vision and work. I loved how daring and dark [The Dark Crystal] was as opposed to the other projects associated with the Muppets, Mark Hamill, who voices the Scientist, shared to a packed Hall H crowd. The script for Age of Resistance is very very good. I don t care about the trappings of the salary or whatever. You look for projects that are a challenge and stuff you d like to see and it definitely falls into that category. Taron Egerton, who plays the hero Gelfling Rian, agreed. I bit Louis hand off when I got the opportunity to do this. It was an amazing experience. Netflix s The Witcher Clips and Teaser Electrifies Hall HHenry Cavill (Mission Impossible Fallout) once again confessed his love of The Witcher video game series — but this time in front of a packed Hall H panel. When clips and a teaser for the Netflix series based on the best-selling fantasy book series,  started rolling, the crowd cheered every sword swing by his monster-hunter hero, Geralt of Rivia. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and cast members Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) joined the former Man of Steel to treat fans to the first look at the series.Renewed for Season 2 Ahead of Its Debut, Amazon s The Boys Shows How Bad Good Can BeAmazon’s upcoming series The Boys tells the tale of five (mostly) ordinary people who take it upon themselves to cut superheroes down to size. It is not the most shocking idea in the series based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, but what viewers will find shocking is the behavior of the superpowered beings on the show. And as executive producer Eric Kripke told a group of reporters at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Friday, real life superheroes would be “Super- Bill Cosby.” The statement stunned those assembled, to which the quick-witted Kripke responded “Is that too soon? Are there still f ing Bill Cosby fans?”His reference to the disgraced comedian and television star who was convicted of aggravated indecent assault in 2018 gets to the heart of the series, in which superheroes are indeed bad actors abusing their abilities to behave like debauched sports stars or Instagram celebrities. It’s provocative material, which may be why Amazon has already renewed the series before its first has even premiered. “We’re half-way through filming the second season of The Boys,” executive producer Seth Rogen said at a fan panel later that day.“Aya Cash will play a superhero named Stormfront,” Kripke said. “Tune in sometime in 2020.”“If there is a 2020,” added Rogen.“Corsets Suck,” Carnival Row Star Cara Delevigne DeclaresA new teaser for #CarnivalRow gives us an extended look at Cara Delevingne s character Vignette Stonemoss. pic.twitter.com/VkA1K1NcC1 Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) July 20, 2019Amazon’s upcoming Carnival Row is interesting mix of Victorian iconography, fairy mythology, detective show. And while appearing at the program’s Ballroom 20 Comic-Con panel, star Cara Delevingne zeroed in on one aspect of Victorian fashion which exemplifies many of the issues the series confronts: corsets.“Corsets suck,” she said when asked about the period details utilized on the the 8-episode series. “They were meant to make women feel put in their place.”Co-star Tamzin Merchant added a more practical issue while acting in one, saying, “It’s hard to have an argument in a corset.”Delevingne noted you can still get angry in one. She also noted Carnival Row’s unique twist on the undergarment with a design made especially for fairy folk, like her character Vignette. Working for Merchant’s rich and spoiled Imogen, Vignette is forced to tied down her fairy wings with an especially-made corset to hide the appendages. To the actor, it is a symbol of the way the fairies — immigrants in the story’s more human world — are meant to hide themselves in a restricted society.“I wish Amazon could give me real wings,” Delevingne added. Though challenging, she said getting the experience of pretend flying was amazing with the “sense of freedom” her character enjoys when not strapped down by societal expectations.“It’s Dickensian with its scope,” creator Travis Beacham explained. Consequently, few ideas on the show will be as simple as Delevingne’s declaration that corsets suck. As he put it, “It’s about finding the most complex answer.”
