Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino s ninth film (if you count the Kill Bill movies as one), just earned him his highest opening-weekend box office, so it s safe to say mainstream audiences were primed and ready for another of the maverick director s stylized adventures. Currently sitting Certified Fresh at 84% on the Tomatometer, the rambling tour through the Los Angeles of 1969 ranks just below Django Unchained in Tarantino s filmography, marking only the latest critical hit in a career full of them.But what did average moviegoers think of the movie? Once Upon a Time currently holds an Audience Score of 72%, which ties 2007 s Death Proof as the lowest of any of his films. Is 72% a bad score? Not by any means, but considering Tarantino s reputation as a filmmaker, it indicates a certain level of dissatisfaction not commonly associated with his movies. With that in mind, we decided to take a peek at the user reviews to get a broader sense of how the moviegoing public at large responded to the film and suss out what might have brought that Audience Score down just a touch more than we expected. Check out the user reviews of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. Though he never underwent any professional training as an actor, he clearly possessed the kind of singular talent required to move seamlessly between genres, and he found willing partners in some of the most gifted directors to come out of Korea. This led to fruitful partnerships with people like Lee Chang-dong (Green Fish, Secret Sunshine), Park Chan-wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Joint Security Area, Thirst), and Kim Jee-woon (The Foul King; The Good, the Bad, the Weird; Age of Shadows), but his work with one Bong Joon-ho may be his best known and most significant.It was Bong s 2007 creature feature The Host that propelled both him and Song into the international spotlight, and when they later reunited for Bong s English-language debut, 2014 s Snowpiercer, the film was widely hailed as a brilliant, ambitious dystopian vision this is nothing to say of their very first film together, 2003 s serial killer mystery Memories of Murder, which is a decidedly smaller film, but an equally compelling and masterfully told story. To be clear, all three of those movies are Certified Fresh at 90% on the Tomatometer or higher, but it s their latest collaboration that has people talking about the Oscars.In Bong Joon-ho s Parasite, Song Kang-ho plays the patriarch of a family of con artists who bamboozle their way into a wealthy household by providing needed services; everything goes according to plan until, of course, it doesn t. To say the film has earned rave reviews is an understatement, as it earned the Cannes Film Festival s coveted Palme d Or by a unanimous vote, and many predict the darkly comedic social satire will win a host of other awards en route to the Oscars. We chatted with Song Kang-ho ahead of Parasite s release, and speaking through a translator, Song gave us his Five Favorite Films, revealing a dry sense of humor in the process: I didn t really have time to think about what my favorite movies are. I guess I ve been busy.

Funeral(Photo by HBO)The remaining revengers assemble to say goodbye to the heroes who gave their lives fighting the army of the dead. (The revenging will have to wait – though not for long.)“They were the shields that guarded the realms of men, and we shall never see their like again,” Jon Snow says, in a nod to the Night’s Watch creed.Ghost survived, so we have that to thankful for. We’ll later see that he was battered and had his ear torn, and we wonder why Jon wouldn’t pull a surviving stable boy aside and tell him to – gently – tend to the direwolf, feed him, and give him a bath. That wolf is still covered in wight funk the last time we see him.2. Dinner(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)At dinner, Daenerys legitimizes Gendry: He is now Lord Gendry Baratheon of Storm’s End.Tyrion and Ser Davos continue their strange friendship in the only eulogy that Melisandre will likely receive.“To Arya Stark, the hero of Winterfell,” Daenerys says, but Arya is nowhere to be found.Tyrion outs Brienne as a virgin, which is so not cool to do in public that we really wish Tyrion would never drink again. That’s not me.” But she can totally be a “not a lady” with Gendry — in a nice, historic castle with lands and loyal bannermen to grab some ale after work with.Who was that smiling at Podrick after dinner? She’s in for a surprise. Later, he embraces both her and a woman whose advances The Hound spurned. Correction: They’re in for a surprise.Jaime seduces Brienne – “I’ve never slept with a knight before” – then leaves her. On his way out, he confesses to her that he pushed Bran from the tower, he strangled his cousin, and he would have murdered everyone at Riverrun for Cersei: “She’s hateful. And so am I.” Brienne sobs. Been there, girl.Tormund’s wildling heart breaks at dinner over Brienne. The Hound is not interested. Willa says he can touch her, and Tormund miraculously recovers.And Gilly is pregnant. Can’t help but wonder: Will full-Craster Little Sam inherit Horn Hill or this half-Craster–Tarly child?4. Daenerys UnravelsAt dinner, Daenerys becomes crazy-eyed jealous when Tormund puts Jon in the spotlight and calls him “king.” Her seething gets Varys’ attention.Later in private, Daenerys tells Jon she loves him, but their kinship stops him mid-snog. She wants to un-know that he’s Rhaegar’s child. When he tells her that he has to tell Arya and Sansa who he is, she replies, “I’ve never begged for anything, but I’m begging you. Don’t do this. Please.”She’s under stress and people are seeing her sweat. “We’ll rip her out root and stem,” Daenerys says in a strategy session. You can see the mad king ranting and burning Starks in Varys’ eyes when he looks at her.Tyrion and Varys convince Daenerys not to immediately burn down the Red Keep and all of the innocents Cersei has gathered to her side as dragon-fodder should Daenerys attack.When Sansa suggests – Daenerys: stop talking, Sansa.“We have won the Great War. Now we will win the Last War,” Daenerys promises, and looks at Sansa. “In all Seven Kingdoms, men will live without fear and cruelty – under their rightful queen.” (Her attitude will come back to bite Daenerys in the butt when Sansa weighs whether or not to share a big secret.)5. Family DramaDebbie DayJon agonizes during the Stark family meeting in the godswood over whether to tell his sisters that he s really their cousin. Arya calls him “brother,” as in full rights to bogart the TV remote brother. He s dying inside and tells Bran to tell them – he’s not officially responsible for having told them if Bran tells him, right? He never really promised Daenerys that he wouldn’t anyway.Despite promising to keep his secret, Sansa promptly tells Tyrion, who promptly tells Varys, who notes that it’s no longer a secret, but is now “information” (which is a commodity he trades in).“A Targaryen father and a Stark mother – Jon’s the one man alive who might actually be able to keep the North in the Seven Kingdoms,” Varys says.Tyrion calls Varys’ musings “treason.”“You know where my loyalty stands. You know I will never betray the realm,” Varys says, in what may be the most important exchange in the episode.6. R.I.P.(Photo by HBO)When the Targaryen fleet drops anchor off of Dragonstone, Euron Greyjoy attacks. He has mounted scorpions on the front of his ships and unleashes on Rhaegal, who dies horrifically and plunges into the sea. Daenerys moves to attack, but retreats when she realizes how vulnerable Drogon is. Euron then attacks the Targaryen fleet, and, we later find out, takes Missandei prisoner.Tyrion, Daenerys, Grey Worm, and a group of Unsullied arrive at the walls of King’s Landing to deliver a message: surrender and release Missandei of Narth. Instead, The Mountain beheads Missandei, whose last word is “Dracarys,” indicating to her queen, we thought, that she should burn King’s Landing to the ground.(Photo by HBO)Plus, Arya takes the King’s Road with The Hound to settle some “unfinished business.” (Arya says she doesn’t plan on coming back to Winterfell, which sounds ominous – Sansa only just got her sister back. It s been 25 years since Michael Jordan and his Tune Squad took on the evil Monstars in Space Jam, but we re finally getting a new story with a new GOAT for a new generation of fans in Space Jam: A New Legacy. LeBron James suits up in the modernized update as, well, himself as he is transported to a digital realm ruled by an all-powerful A.I. named Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle). In order to free his son (Cedric Joe) and return to the real world, LeBron rallies a team of familiar characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny, and more to defeat Al G. s own digitized Goon Squad. Ahead of the film s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez chatted with stars Cheadle, Joe, and Sonequa Martin-Green; voice actors Zendaya and Gabriel Iglesias; and director Malcolm D. Lee about why the original cult classic endures to this day, and what it s like to continue its ahem legacy. Music biopics aren t a new phenomenon, but with the recent success of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek s Oscar-winning performance you can expect a few more to come down the pipeline in the near future. This year already gave us the Netflix feature The Dirt, focusing on hard rockers Mötley Crüe, and this week brings us Rocketman, a fantasy-tinged look back at the life of Elton John. Taron Egerton takes on the challenge of portraying John in the film, which traces his upbringing and musical career, culminating in his lifelong friendship with songwriter Bernie Taupin (played by Jamie Bell). It also happens to be directed by Dexter Fletcher, the same man who took over and completed Bohemian Rhapsody in the wake of Bryan Singer s dismissal from the project. Critics say Rocketman is an affectionate, entertaining portrait that benefits from Egerton s powerhouse performance, John s indelible music, and some inventive cinematic flourishes, and it should both please longtime fans and serve as a worthy introduction for neophytes.

But just as his career really began to take off, his patients, ones going into the operating room for fairly routine procedures, began leaving permanently harmed … or worse. Two fellow surgeons – to be played by Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater – began to suspect Duntsch of some very sick behavior, and set out to stop him from continuing to perform surgeries. Unfortunately, they found out that the patients who needed this protection might be the last ones to get it.Dornan had to drop out of the project because of pandemic-related rescheduling, as did Stephen Frears, who was set to direct the first two episodes. The first of these shows is supposed to hit Netflix in 2020, which means we ll be updating this list as more news becomes available.Inventing Anna Will Star Ozark Emmy-Winner Julia GarnerRhimes is creating and exec-producing Inventing Anna based on the New York magazine story about con artist Anna Delvey.Remember that viral story about a young and posh 20-something who duped Manhattan’s elite (even one Vanity Fair staffer) into believing she was an heiress? Well, according to the press release, Rhimes is going to make us wonder again if “she[’s] the stuff American dreams are made of or is she New York s biggest con woman?” and “is it a con if you enjoy being taken?” It was later announced that the series would be called Inventing Anna. It will star Ozark Emmy winner Julia Garner as the titular troublemaker and Veep’s Anna Chlumsky as a reporter with a lot to prove who becomes embroiled in her web. I m going to go against the status quo. I m going to stand out in a good way or a bad way.”Just have the courage to be like, This is my honest opinion. I stand by it. I am being true to myself. This is my voice. Stick by it. If people are being mean, just block them on Twitter, and find nice people who will support you.Is there someone in your life who isn t a critic, whose opinion on movies you really admire?I would say my best friend, because when I m having those anxieties about a review – and I think that my opinion might be terrible and stupid, and everyone will make fun of me – I go to my best friend. I will describe my opinion, and even if he hasn t seen the film, he s so good at listening and giving his take. We have quite similar taste in films, but in the ways that they vary, I find really interesting. We re always wanting to talk about that because we have quite similar personalities. And yes, he even gives us a great Craven crescendo.So, hear us out: It s time we remember Red Eye for what it is – one of the master of suspense s best works. Here s why.It Marked A Triumphant Comeback For the Legendary Director(Photo by © Dreamworks)Horror fans rightly revere Wes Craven as a legend, a master of horror, the man who gave us iconic and genre-defining works like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, and The Hills Have Eyes. If there was a Mount Rushmore for scary movie guys, his face would be on it. But in a 40-year career there are always going to be misses among the hits, and Wes Craven’s filmography is about as bumpy as a desert road trip in a Wes Craven movie. (Remember Vampire In Brooklyn? Or My Soul to Take? Or The Hills Have Eyes 2? We do.)The director hit a particularly rough stretch of road following the success of Scream 2 and 1999’s kinda-sorta-well-received play at Oscar glory, Music of the Heart, an earnest inspirational-teacher drama starring Meryl Streep. In 2000, he released Scream 3, the first and only Rotten entry in that franchise, and followed that up with Cursed, a so-bad-it’s-actually-fabulous-in-retrospect attempt by Craven and Scream writer Kevin Williamson to revive the werewolf genre… by making a Scream rip-off with snouts. (Production was a complete mess on the project, largely thanks to interference from the Weinsteins, and it shows.)By 2005, the only way for Craven was up, and – cue airplane metaphor – Red Eye allowed him to soar. Liberated from studio interference and overwhelming expectations – he wasn’t being asked to close out a beloved trilogy or kickstart another subgenre renaissance – Craven brought his formidable talent for suspense to a smart and self-contained script by Carl Ellsworth, and showed his often too-unsung ability to bring the best out of young actors. Critically lauded as one of the tightest, most nerve-racking thrillers to come along in years, Red Eye was a reminder that the master still had a knack for terror – no matter the altitude.It’s Anchored By Two Great Performances (Photo by © Dreamworks)It’s a testament to Cillian Murphy’s skill as an actor that we don’t dismiss him – or the film, really – the instant we learn his villainous character’s name is “Jackson Rippner.” Murphy, whose 2005 would include his entrée into the mainstream playing Scarecrow in Batman Begins, is all alluring mystery as he flirts in the check-in line and over drinks at an airport bar, and when the script turns, he makes a seamless transition to pure menace. But the movie ultimately belongs to this two-hander’s other hand, Rachel McAdams, fresh off of The Notebook, showing the same steeliness and pluck audiences loved in that film as she tangles with an altogether different kind of male pursuer. Like Rippner, her Lisa undergoes a transformation as the plane races towards Miami: From exhausted daughter allowing herself a little fun to terrified prey, and, ultimately, resourceful final girl, and McAdams delivers on every note. By the time the film devolves to a Scream-a-like in its house-bound finale – or ascends to it, depending on your tastes – you find yourself rooting for her just as you would a bloodied, bruised, but still-standing Sidney Prescott or Nancy Thompson.It Perfectly Captures the Nightmare of Post 9/11 Travel(Photo by © Dreamworks)Craven was an expert when it came to perfectly encapsulating an era s fears, and Red Eye is no exception. Flying in the years after 9/11 was a source of serious anxiety for many Americans onto whose brains the images of that tragic day were still freshly etched. That anxiety was stoked throughout the 2000s by reports of unsuccessful terrorist attempts – Richard Reid’s failed shoe-bombing among the earliest – involving commercial flights and airports. The palpable national fear around air travel led to many things: The time-consuming security measures we undergo when we fly; some awful racial profiling by passengers and authorities; and, of course, several movies that tried to mine that fear for cinematic thrills.In 2005, Red Eye did just that, along with the bigger-budget Flightplan, starring Jodie Foster as a mother who wakes up mid-flight to discover her six-year-old daughter has disappeared. (Author side note: On a flight back in 2005 I was awakened mid-flight BY Jodie Foster lightly bumping my shoulder as she took her child to the bathroom!) But Red Eye was the more successful of the two, critically if not commercially, because it hit the nerve harder and more directly. Where Flightplan’s tale was complicated, confused, and conspiracy-focused, Red Eye was born directly from the very simple questions many travelers were sweatily asking themselves as they took their seats: Who am I sitting next to? What if I’m on that flight? Would I fight back – or cower?The movie also gets the more general horrors of modern-day air travel spot on, with nods to the draconian security process – “Flying’s so much fun these days!” – and one of cinema’s most realistic renderings of coach class. Just watching Lisa squeeze herself down the aisle as other customers sardine themselves into the cabin, over-stuff the overhead, and, in one particularly visceral cutaway, slurp up a box of noodles… I shiver every time.It’s A Not-So-Veiled Dig At Corporate America(Photo by © Dreamworks)In one sense, Red Eye is a high-octane game of cat-and-mouse between a psychotic terrorist and a resourceful final girl; in another, it’s about two cogs in two different corporate machines trying to satisfy their employers and getting in each others’ way in the process. Because that really is the crux of what the two characters are doing: Lisa, the ever-diligent employee, who’s seen constantly solving problems for her mega hotel and its customers, is willing to risk her own father’s life to try to avoid harm coming to either; Jack is the mid-level manager who’s been given an assignment – get Lisa to change the room – and will stop at nothing to keep a client satisfied. The client just happens to be some sort of terrorist organization.Jack in particular becomes a kind of maniacal embodiment of make-the-sale-at-any-cost corporate culture – he’s the knife-wielding version of a Wall Street banker in some respects – and at one point leans in to tell Lisa they may not be so different. “I never lied to you, Leese,” he says, as she struggles for air. “Know why? ’Cause it doesn’t serve me. We’re both professionals. We have the will and means to follow through. ’Cause when we don’t, our customers aren’t happy. And when they’re not, we suffer and our lives go to s .” I swear I ve read that in a corporate training packet somewhere The Ending Is Bonkers, In a Good, Polarizing, and Craven-y WayAt the time of its release, a number of critics pointed out that the thriller’s finale feels out-of-step with the taut, disciplined film that precedes it; when the plane lands, the intimate suspense Craven built up in the fuselage is traded in for an elaborate chase sequence that takes us through the airport and eventually to Lisa’s father’s house where Rippner grabs a knife and gets all Ghostface on us. There’s hiding behind walls, and creaking doors, and falling while running away, and a pretty great he’s-behind-the-door jump scare. It s all a bit ridiculous.Why does it work? Because for all of its incisive mining of post-9/11 fears, its light social commentary, and its tight script, Red Eye has an air of the ridiculous right from the get-go. Everything in the film is heightened to an almost surreal, wink-wink level: Think Jayma Mays’ hilariously frazzled hotel receptionist; Colby from Survivor showing up as a cartoonishly stoic bodyguard; almost every other passenger on the flight rendered as if plucked from an SNL skit; and the overall terrorist plot itself. Just when you think that having a government official moved to a penthouse suite so that it’s easier for terrorists to blow up his room with a surface-to-air missile is straining credulity, said terrorists retrieve their missile by fishing it out of the water with… a few regular fishing rods.The movie’s climax is only out of step if you weren’t paying attention to the movie itself. It is excessive, and, yes, it has more than just echoes of Craven’s previous work, but it’s also a release; the director eschews a tighter, neater, subtler ending to give the audience what they want, making a meal of the tension he s built throughout and throwing on a second dessert of slasher fun just because he can.And Craven can, which is the other exciting thing about this finale. It is tense and scary and delicious. After two public failures, and with his ability to jolt us out of our skin in question, the master gives us 15 minutes of what he does best, reminding us he s indeed still a master. Just because he can.Red Eye was released on August 19, 2005.
