天博bob采用百度引擎3(Baidu 5)s some sort of meta shapeshifter who can take on the form of her adoptive brother and some sort of creature. Also, she may have an interesting diet to maintain her abilities. But as the final two episodes focused on Tobias, Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Lala, Grace received little more than a name check in “The Book of the Apocalypse.” It leaves us to wonder who or what she might really be.Back in the comics, Grace was introduced in 2003 as an Amazon who joins a new Outsiders team and, eventually, begins a relationship with Thunder. But since she’s an Amazon in the comics, her powers include super-strength, endurance and an improved healing rate and is a far cry from the Grace evolving on screen. As it happens, her apparent real name – Shay Li Wylde – suggests a connection to the 1990s Outsiders character named Wylde. He was, to a coin a term, a “werebear” and much like Grace (we’re going to use her chosen name for herself), had limited control of his powers as well. Hopefully, the third season will focus more time on her secret and offer her the opportunity to become more than an occasional guest character. Will Tobias Be Running the Pit By the Season 3 Premiere?(Photo by Bob Mahoney/The CW)Watching Black Lightning and Lightning take down Tobias was a particularly satisfying moment of the program’s second season. But we’re already wondering how long it can last. Tobias is a slippery customer and subordinates are drawn to him – even if they should know better (R.I.P., Todd Green). To us, it suggests Tobias will soon be running the ASA’s black site despite everything the watch commander told him in the closing moments of season 2. The Pit, more than anything else, looks like the sort of crucible Tobias Whale thrives in. It is just a question of time.It is also a question of Tobias’s ill-defined abilities. While Dr. Jace (Jennifer Riker) created the serum which slowed his aging to a crawl, its side effects are not completely known. He seems to be bullet-proof and super strong, but it is unclear if these powers are derived from the serum – and therefore need a constant dosage to be maintained – or if they are inherent like Black Lightning’s abilities. If the latter, he will have no problem setting up a new empire from within the Pit. He may even find a new class of willing accomplices to throw at his arch enemy. How Will the Pierces Take to Being ASA Assets?(Photo by Eliza Morse/The CW)In the last moments of the finale, Odell deputizes Jeff, Jen, and Anissa into the ASA to fight the coming war against Markovia. Presumably, Freeland will be the battleground and the other surviving Pod Kids (and probably Khalil) will form a sort of ersatz Outsiders. Well, other Greg Berlanti–produced superhero shows on The CW would go that way, but Black Lighting eschews much of the Arrowverse’s rhyme and meter for its own storytelling style.Nonetheless, it is clear the Pierces, now known to the ASA as metas, will have to deal with the agency in order to retain some modicum of their freedom. It is probably the very thing Odell believes will keep them in line. He used a similar tactic on Lynn (Christine Adams) throughout the second season. One imagines it will work for a time, even on Jennifer, but eventually Odell may find he needs more extreme measures; much in the same way he forced Wendy (Madison Bailey) into exerting much more of her abilities during a test.Of course, the Lightning Family may still have one ace to play: Odell is seemingly unaware of Gambi (James Remar). He is still technically dead as he never found the culprits of the attempt on his life, which means the ASA may not have tabs on him. Assuming none of the Pierces addressed their man in the chair by name after Odell began spying on them, Gambi may prove vital to their escape from ASA control. These are just a few of the things Black Lighting left us to ponder. There are other issues like the corruption Henderson (Damon Gupton) still faces within the Freeland PD. If working for the ASA takes up more of his time, Jeff may have to leave Garfield High behind again, imperiling its future. And then there’s Lala, whose living Hell may actually lead to some sort of redemption in the end. Black Lightning introduced a lot of interesting ideas – even if they are not always served well – and we can’t wait to see what becomes of them next year.

天博bobA Collection of Very Diva Holiday Concerts(Photo by Apple TV+)Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, and Carrie Underwood are premiering new Christmas specials this year, all spun off from their new Christmas album releases.Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special is her first special for Apple TV+, with a narrative that finds Carey helping Santa with a crisis at the North Pole, which involves musical performances, animation, and help from famous friends like Tiffany Haddish, Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Billy Eichner, Ariana Grande, and Carey’s twins, Monroe and Moroccan. Rotten Tomatoes recently held its first Rotten Tomatoes Critics Workshop, designed to help freelance critics and journalists navigate festivals, develop industry contacts, and get their stories placed. We asked the industry professionals who spoke at our workshops to provide their top tips for freelancers; the below come from President of the African American Film Critics Association, Gil Robertson.Covering Sundance is an entertainment writer’s dream. As one of the industry’s most important festivals, it attracts the world’s biggest entertainers and decision makers. I’ve had the privilege of attending the festival for over a decade now as both a film critic and film advocate. Over the years, I have developed a few strategies that help me get the most out of each visit that I am now sharing with you. Check out some of my best practices below to help you get the most out of this incredible opportunity!1. PurposeSundance fosters a very “open” and inclusionary environment with films, installations and panel discussions that reflect the industry’s global diversity. New faces are plentiful and welcomed even, so make sure you have your game plan intact to meet your goals and get the most out of your experience. The festival is a tremendous opportunity to connect and network with those who can truly help grow your career and help you make a mark in this industry.2. PlanPlan: The best way to get what you need attending Sundance is to come pre-prepared. Study the program and be sure to sign up for all alerts. Send intro letters to PR professionals or points of contact for screenings and events that outline the coverage that you plan to provide. Also give yourself options with multiple events on your itinerary. Remember to be persistent, but not overbearing.3. WardrobeIt gets very cold in Park City, so dress warmly and layer well because you absolutely will spend a lot of time in long lines.4. PacingIt’s very easy to get overwhelmed by the glamour and fan fair at Sundance. There will be a lot of receptions, parties, premieres and even impromptu gatherings that will leave you exhausted and can throw you off track. Don’t lose your head! Enjoy everything, but remember to stay focused on your goals to manage your time wisely.5. ResponsibilityGetting Sundance media credentials is a huge opportunity and privilege and you should treat it as such. Make sure to show up to screenings and press opportunities on time. It’s also very important to file your reviews and articles covering the festival promptly so that they have the greatest impact. Doing this will ensure that you get invited back and will also provide you with entry to be invited to other film festivals.Gil Robertson is a journalist, author, and producer. (Photo by Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watch lists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re ready to dance and sing about lesser-known or forgotten musicals – some classics, and some should-be-classics. The 50s and 60s were truly the golden ages of movie musicals; Best Picture winners like The Sound of Music, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, and An American in Paris made stars out of Natalie Wood, Leslie Caron, and Rita Moreno, while established stars like Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn catapulted to icon status on the backs of musical roles during this period. Later years saw rock musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, and Tommy break into the mainstream – however, countless gems have been largely forgotten by modern audiences. And we re here to fix that. Some titles on this list found cult-like followings in later years while others were unfortunate victims of too-close comparisons with their Broadway inspiration – either way, we think the films make up an eclectic roster of must-watch musicals. Read below for our list of hidden gem classic musicals you need to see or revisit.Got another favorite hidden gem classic musical you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964) 78% What is it? A rags to riches musical about a famed socialite who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Why you need to see it: Debbie Reynolds is widely known for her role in Singin in the Rain – and for being Carrie Fisher s mother. However, if you want to see the triple-threat performer at her peak you must watch The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reynolds plays the famed Denver socialite from humble beginnings who survived a flood as an infant and then the Titanic disaster as an adult. The film follows a fictional Molly from her years as a saloon girl to her eventual fame as one of the richest women in the country. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was a hit for MGM, but is not as familiar to modern audiences as some of its glossy contemporaries. Filled with humor and show-stopping numbers, the movie will have you humming ditties like  I ll Never Say No and Belly Up to the Bar, Boys as soon as the credits roll.Watch it if you like: Singin in the Rain, Princess Diaries, The Great Gadsby, Lawless, Funny Girl, My Fair LadyWhere to watch: Stream on TCMWatch app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Man of La Mancha (1972) 50% What is it? A musical biopic about Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, using his most famed literary creation as a plot device. Why you need to see it: It s hard to understand why the film adaptation of The Man from La Mancha starring Peter O Toole and Sophia Loren was not a critical and commercial hit. The original stage production was a smash on Broadway and took home five Tonys, but audiences were none-too-impressed with the film version: It failed to earn back its production budget and Time thought so little of it that the magazine didn t even publish a full review. Most of the problems with the adaptation are a result of its troubled production; a revolving door of directors and a heated debate over whether to make the film a musical at all crippled any effort to do justice to the source material. The dreary costumes, laughable sets, and indifferent cinematography may mar the overall product, but the music remains incredible, and Toole and Loren give it their all despite the challenges. So it s still worth a watch.Watch it if you like: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Don Juan Demarco, Monty Python, and the Holy Grail, The Mask of Zorro, The Three MusketeersWhere to watch: Stream now on HooplaDigital. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, and iTunes.Carmen Jones (1954) 77% (Photo by Courtesy of 2Oth Century Fox)What is it? George Bizet s Carmen is re-imagined with an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: Carmen Jones is another Broadway hit to get the Hollywood treatment. Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carroll, Pearl Bailey, and Harry Belafonte are mesmerizing in this story of the misadventures of a troublesome seductress living in America during World War II. Playing Carmen, Dandridge made her mark on history, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Nominated for two Oscars, the film is well-known but not frequently watched. The performances, costumes, and rich Technicolor landscapes make watching the film a truly transformative experience that is almost enough to forgive the choice to dub the voices of famed singers in the production.Watch it if you like: Porgy Bess, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, Rent, Les MiserablesWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Wiz (1978) 42% What is it? The Wizard of OZ is remade with a contemporary story, new music, and an all-Black cast. Why you need to see it: As many Twitter users pointed out during NBC s The Wiz Live! in 2015, many movie fans have not seen The Wiz. Beloved in the Black community, the film was a commercial disaster despite starring icons Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne. A modern imagining of Dorothy s trek along the yellow brick road – with music from Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross, direction by Sidney Lumet, and words by Joel Schumacher – the film was one of the most expensive musical productions ever made, and lost million at the box office. The film s popularity never matched its ambition outside of the Black community, where it s still lauded as a cult classic. And it s easy to see why when you watch it today. With some of the most gifted musicians of our time in front of and behind the camera, The Wiz is a soulful crowd pleaser that showcases these artists at the height of their popularity and powers.Watch it if you like: The Wizard of OZ, Oz, The Great and Powerful, Return to Oz, Moonwalker, Idlewild, LabyrinthWhere to watch: Stream now on Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) 67% (Photo by Courtesy of 20th Century Fox)What is it? Chronicles the lives and loves of The Donahues, a family vaudeville act.Why you need to see it: In a way, this is the original jukebox movie musical – all of the songs from There s No Business Like Show Business were previously penned by Irving Berlin for other works. Stacked with stage powerhouses like Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey, as well as film stars like Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O Connor, the film was primarily a vehicle to showcase Marilyn Monroe, who had just married Joe DiMaggio and was one of the biggest names and box office draws in Hollywood. However, with a near two-hour runtime (a rare feat for musicals of that era), audiences found the film to be a little too Broadway and lacking in story. Monroe, who famously only took the role to ensure her casting in The Seven Year Itch, didn t shine in any of her musical numbers and was lambasted by critics. Despite all this, however, There s No Business like Show Business does have some of the most incredible and lavish musical numbers ever committed to screen, and further highlights Berlin s incomparable musical catalog.Watch it if you like: A Chorus Line, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Some Like it Hot, The Greatest ShowmanWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Cover Girl (1944) 95% (Photo by Courtesy of Sony Home Entertainment)What is it? A young chorus girl wins a cover girl contest, is thrust into stardom, and must choose between her career or love. Why you need to see it: Rita Hayworth became one of only a handful of women who had the enviable honor of dancing with both Gene Kelly and Fred Astair on screen with her role in Cover Girl. Dancing alongside Kelly in her first role with top billing, Cover Girl was one of Hayworth s final films before Gilda solidified her as a film icon. Shown briefly in The Shawshank Redemption, Hayworth s iconic entrance and overall performance here was also the inspiration for Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A massive hit at the time, this story of a showgirl-turned-star has been sadly dwarfed in later years by Kelly s and Hayworth s more memorable roles like Singin in the Rain and The Lady From Shanghai, respectively.Watch it if you like: Gilda, Showboat, A Chorus Line, Almost Famous, A Star is Born, RockstarWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Hair (1979) 88% What is it? An anti-war rock musical set within the hippie counter culture. Why you need to see it: Though many will know Hair s catchy opening number  Aquarius, the musical itself is a bit of a lesser-known treasure outside of musical theater obsessives. The first film directed by Milos Forman after his critical and commercial smash One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest, Hair had critics raving about his skill in adapting the controversial and stylized musical. Roger Ebert said of Forman: He brings life to the musical form in the same way that West Side Story did. Still, some contemporaries – including the musical s creators – argued it diluted the musical s anti-war message was diluted on the journey from stage to screen.Watch it if you like: Jesus Christ Superstar, Across the Universe, Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Fear Loathing in Las VegasWhere to watch: Stream now on Hoopla and PrimeVideo. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW,  Vudu, Google Play, and iTunes.

(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)“I had mixed feelings when I first got the script,” Walters said when Rotten Tomatoes caught up with the actor. “But ultimately, I feel like he had no other option. I think he was hoping for a reunion and for things to be fixed. Obviously, that s where you go, family.”Showrunner Greg Walker told us it was the natural progression from Jason’s split with the team at the end of season 2.“It made sense to me emotionally,” he said. “The persona of Robin, in that supersuit in that role, is really the thing that saves Jason — and always has — and has kept them off the streets. He s had a very rough life, and he s somebody who struggled, so it means a lot to him to be Robin.”Indeed, in at least in some comic book stories, Batman chose to take Jason in for fear that the kid who tried to steal the hubcaps off the Batmobile would grow to be a foe.“[Jason] cares a lot about it, and he s good at it, so it made sense to go back to Bruce,” Walker continued. “It s one thing to go home, but it s another thing to actually deal with your troubles and your problems.”(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)Created in 1983 as a permanent replacement for Dick Grayson, who assumed the identity of Nightwing around the same time, Jason was initially well-received. In the reboot aftermath of Crisis on Infinite Earths, though, a bratty streak developed in the character which upset fans of Batman and Detective Comics. Famously, readers voted to end Jason’s life via a 1-800 number in 1988; although some accounts suggest Jason would’ve died no matter the results of the phone poll. Nearly 20 years later, he was revived via absurd comic book means and came to represent a compelling concept: the person Batman failed the most during his crusade against crime. It is an idea Titans intends to play with.Of course, Jason sees it in a different way as Walters told us “Jason feels like he was ultimately a mistake to Bruce.”We’d argue the character’s perception is yet another of the Batman s mistakes.(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)According to Walker, taking a harder look at Bruce’s (Iain Glen) choices and mistakes is a key element of the show, going back to Dick’s (Brenton Thwaites, pictured) infamous “F Batman” moment.“It s one of the reasons that we see Dick struggling in the pilot, he s a guy who can t quite figure out how to deal with this pain and struggle that he has based on the trauma that started off his life with Bruce,” Walker said. And though that initial trauma was not Batman s fault, he certainly didn t help Dick cope with it. So is failure a fair appraisal of Bruce’s parenting skills?“Not necessarily,” said Walters, who indicated Jason’s traumas before meeting Batman are still present and only compound the issues we will see in season 3. “I think [Bruce] parents the way that he knows to parent, which is based on his dealing with trauma. But his way of dealing with trauma is not right for everyone. So therein lays the challenge of his parenting: to see if he can grow and see where his pitfalls and failures are, and understand people in a different light other than through his own prism.”And Jason’s key decision in season 3 will definitely speak to that. Fans of Batman comics know what comes next for the character, but we’ll leave it as a surprise for new viewers.Of those upcoming events, though, Walters said “I think that whole story arc was inevitable. It was something you had to do. So, I m really glad we got to explore that this season. I think his destiny is unavoidable.”(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)But Titans is a large ensemble show, and Jason’s story is also an anchor for the rest of the team as they move from San Francisco to Gotham and encounter people like Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Savannah Welch, pictured) – a version inspired by her comic book counterpart s years as a paraplegic (from 1988 until the universe-wide reboot in 2011) and her role in the Batman Beyond animated series.“She s such an interesting character in many ways,” Walker said. “By putting her in a position of conflict rather than on the Titans, [it] made her more an interesting character for us and a stronger character for us.”He also added that as the show will always pivot around Dick’s choices, Barbara adds a new perspective on him – only Donna Troy (Conor Leslie) knows him better – and that it will lead to an interesting dynamic in its own right.(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)The move to Gotham will also put Gar Logan (Ryan Potter) in an interesting position for growth.“This teen has been through a lot in two seasons, he’s seen a lot, and grown from a guy who was hanging out at a mansion with the Doom Patrol [and had] a sheltered experience,” Walker said. “He s seen people die, he s seen trouble. He s seen a family that he deeply cares about get challenged and tested. So I think it s a natural outgrowth of where you go as a person or you deal with it like a lot of us deal with trauma by not dealing with it. But he has stepped up as someone who now will fight for what he cares for.” It is a change in his persona which pleasantly sneaks up on the viewer across the first few episodes.(Photo by HBO Max)It is also a good thing he’s stepping up as the most leader-like member of the team, Kory (Anna Diop, pictured below) will also preoccupied by a family matter: her sister Komand r (Damaris Lewis, pictured above) – aka Blackfire – has arrived on Earth.According to Walker, introducing Blackfire serves multiple purposes beyond showcasing Lewis’s talents. The character also offers the show a chance to get into the situation on Kory’s homeworld while remaining on budget-friendly Earth.“[She] brings back that experience from another planet, which sheds light into Kory s origin; it was super important for us to tell that story,” he said.(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/HBO Max)In a departure from most of Kory’s comic book adventures, the Titans version arrived on the scene with amnesia and never fully recovered.“She has to figure out over the course of [these] three seasons what she is, why she was sent on this mission, and what really matters to her,” he explained. But even beyond Kory’s personal journey, Blackfire’s appearance serves another of the show’s themes. “So much about this season, especially after the pandemic and after the way the world was changing, we wanted to address power structures, and the myths behind them, and poke at them.”It is part of the reason Batman continues to get a critical thrashing within the show and why the GCPD may not be entirely clean even under Barbara’s direction.“If we re going to do that to the GCPD and the role of superheroes in Gotham, it had to also be done to the power structure on her home planet [Tamaran], Walker continued. How is [Blackfire] in a position of power and how is her sister not? What stories do people tell in order to ensure that they can keep that power?(Photo by HBO Max)As a whole, Titans seems to revel in shattering more innocent, Silver Age conceptions of the Teen Titans with a deeper psychological grounding. Walker credited The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, with its own well-rounded depictions of characters like Dick and Donna, as the inspiration for Titans’s tendency to delve further into the group’s psychology.“What I found so striking about reading those books is that the characters are asking hard questions … They weren t built to sit down and navel gaze, but there was an edge and a probing quality to the writing that we ran with,” he said. But does it all that probing into the characters mean Jason is doomed? “He does something that is very hard to come back from,” Walters said. “So ultimately, it s a fight within himself [and] whether the Titans can forgive him or not for what he has done.” Time will tell, of course, if Jason will be able to redeem himself or if another will take flight as Robin.Titans season 3 launches with its first three episodes on Thursday, August 12, on HBO Max.On an Apple device? (Photo by FX)The 50 Best Spy TV Shows EverDeciding which series are worthy of inclusion on a list of the best spy shows and streaming series ever is a matter of mystery itself. With its propensity for disguises, double-crosses, and surveillance, FX’s Cold War–era drama The Americans, is certainly about spies. But the series — which has a 96% series-level Tomatometer score, every season of which is Certified Fresh (including one 100% CF season), and is regarded by critics as one of the greatest shows in this Golden Age of Television — is also about marriage, parenting, and history’s winning side’s ability to whitewash facts. Should it receive a lower ranking on our ultimate spy show list than a classic like CBS’s Mission: Impossible? Also of note: They both have catchy theme songs.Where should a complicated sci-fi caper like Starz’s Counterpart stand? The series, which returns for season 2 on December 9, finished off its first season with one of those rare, perfect 100% Certified Fresh Tomatometer scores. It stars J.K. Simmons as both a mild-mannered bureaucratic pencil pusher and his aggro alt-universe counterpart, who hunt dangerous reality-hopping spies. The espionage stories of John le Carré have also had televised adaptations. Le Carré s The Night Manager (featuring one of Britain’s top Toms) and, most recently, The Little Drummer Girl both aired on AMC, are Certified Fresh at 90% on the Tomatometer, and rank high on our spy series list.Spycraft can also be quite funny, as in Mel Brooks and Buck Henry’s beloved Get Smart, which ran on NBC and CBS in the late 60s, and the long-running animated FX comedy Archer, which has a 93% Tomatometer score. We considered more than Tomatometer scores to finalize our spy show ranking, however; we also looked at variables like how many seasons each series has, how each of those seasons scored, how many reviews determined those scores, and whether those seasons were Certified Fresh, We looked at other reputable media lists of top spy series to help gauge where to place some classic series without enough reviews to register a Tomatometer score, and then applied a dose of editorial discretion to break some ties and rank some titles based on their cultural resonance.Check out Rotten Tomatoes list of best spy shows ever before it self destructs in three … two … just kidding. Like the FBI’s most wanted list, we’ll keep updating this dossier as more information becomes available.
(Photo by Russ Martin/CBS)Intentionally or not, by the finale of its sophomore season, Star Trek: Discovery, along with actor Ethan Peck, who guest-starred as Spock, provided an argument for another prequel to the original series. At least two more live-action series are in the works: the first led by Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou about Starfleet s shadowy Section 31 division, and the other led by Patrick Stewart, revisiting his role as Jean-Luc Picard from The Next Generation. (Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, and Isa Briones will join Stewart in the new series.) The Short Treks program has already seen four episodes released, and Emmy Award–winner Mike McMahan (Rick And Morty) is developing Star Trek: Lower Decks, a half-hour animated comedy focused on the support crew of one of Starfleet’s least important ships.Even if the intention is to see Spock recur on Discovery, the case made for a series about a young and hungry Enterprise crew led by Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and Peck as an up-and-coming version of the iconic sci-fi figure couldn’t be stronger.Discovery’s second season focused on universal themes of family, understanding, love, and loss — all well-trod storytelling paths with the inherent danger of an attack of saccharine. Under the guidance of Alex Kurtzman and his team, however, the result has been mysterious, thrilling, unpredictable, and, of course, very worthy of the series’ recent third season renewal. Both Discovery seasons are Certified Fresh: Season 2 currently has an 83% Tomatometer score, while season 1, which endured a lot of huff and bluster about what Star Trek is supposed to be, is just behind it at a healthy 82%.Ahead of season 2, some residual grousing turned up around the highly anticipated appearance of Spock, the brother of lead character Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Green.As Sopan Deb of The New York Times wrote in a recap of the season premiere: “There is an elephant on the bridge. Spock … It’s always been a sore point that Burnham is supposed to be Spock’s foster [sister], whom apparently we never hear about in the history of all of Star Trek. In ‘Brother,’ we get hints about this. Burnham suggests that Spock didn’t accept her as a sibling — which seems, frankly, out of character for Spock, but it’s too early to determine that until we see how this story unfolds.”(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/CBS)Now the story has unfolded, and we’ve witnessed Michael and Spock push and pull against each other as if connected by rubber bands. Will they or won’t they be a family? In the finale that aired Thursday night, we found out that they will. The hate Michael perceived Spock had for her melted away over the course of the season — life lesson: bad feelings will escalate when fueled by a lack of communication. The finale showed just how deeply his love for his sister ran, with Spock choosing to accompany her into the unknown and their mutual dismay when it becomes apparent that their ever-after as loving siblings is not to be. Personal log: Stardate 1201.7, Spock says in voice-over of a scene of him embracing their mother in the finale. One hundred and twenty-four days have passed since your disappearance We’ve sworn never to speak your name in the presence of others. Yet, I feel you with me, always. We spoke to Peck ahead of the finale to find out how the season went for him and what it’s been like inhabiting such an beloved character in an enormous franchise, and, though he was understandably circumspect about whether we’ll see more Spock, one thing’s certain: He won’t be wearing a red shirt.(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/CBS)Debbie Day for Rotten Tomatoes: It’s been so exciting to watch your character develop over the season; the arc has been quite extreme for Spock. Fans have a very specific vision about what the character is, but they start in a very different place with you — can you talk a little bit about that?Ethan Peck: You re absolutely right. The season arc is hugely transformational for him. I consider it, I understand it to be sort of his genesis. He is in this place of uncertainty, and back in the beginning of his appearance on season 2 of Discovery, and he ends up much closer to the Mr. Spock we met at the beginning of the original series. It s just an incredible honor, not just to play Spock, but to play him in this moment in his life when he is full of doubts and he has these pieces of himself that aren t quite yet fitting together well. What makes Spock so special is that he is these polar opposites, but they live together in harmony and he creates something much more than either human or Vulcan, in my opinion. I think this is why he s so highly regarded and so respected and so compelling; because he makes the space in himself for the cold Vulcan logic and the warm hysterical human tendencies. That s an amazing character to play and to be, and to have found that, I think there was an effort on not just my side, but on the writer s side to make sure that it was clear he s not yet the Spock that we have known to come and love in the original series. We get glimpses along the way, and I think at the end we really come full bore with that mature Spock, or begin to.(Photo by Russ Martin/CBS)Did you know going into this that you were going to play this very special moment in the character s life? How much did you know about what this season would be for him?Peck: I didn t know all that much. I think they took, obviously a huge risk, casting me. Not necessarily — in my opinion — being proven as an actor. Who knows, because it is such a delicate balance in this character and the portrayal of this character of logic and emotion. But then I think that they saw I was extremely dedicated and passionate about doing it, about understanding it, and I was working on the edge of my abilities throughout the season, and I learned so much from doing it. Not just from the experience itself of creating and showing up every day on set and working, but from Spock himself.I think they gave me a little more responsibility as they went on, and I d like to think that what I did informed their decision to keep him on. I think in maybe some worlds, there was a possibility that I totally shat the bed, excuse my language, and they gave me less responsibilities, sorta phased me out, so I just feel incredibly grateful and honored. It s all very surreal to me, still. I just feel filled with those feelings of gratitude and honor. For fans of the franchise, it s been very exciting to have the character there. One of the highlights, of course, is when it s becoming apparent what Michael’s role is exactly with the angel: that she is responsible for some of the signals. But then Spock s shuttle is disabled, and he s not able to get back to Discovery to continue on the journey with her. How did you build that emotional moment for the character with his sister?Peck: To speak specifically to the good bye on the shuttle, I think all of the work that we ve all done with the Spock in the months that I ve been there prior to that moment was really priming me for that good bye. I think in that moment, we really see Spock take ownership of himself and of his constituents: of this Vulcan side, of this human side. It s an action that is deeply emotional and executed highly logically. In the beginning of part one of the finale, Spock decides that he will stay with Discovery. That s a very emotionally driven move. He wants to stay with his family, he wants to stay with his sister, with one of the, I think, few places that he can call home — if you can call a person a home — because, in a way, they have so much in common. Although she s not half human–half Vulcan, she is. She was this human that was raised on Vulcan, and in season 1 you really see her become more human and learn what it is to be human. In this second season, I think we see Spock become more human and more Vulcan together. In the beginning of part one, he thinks that he ll stay, but in the end, he knows that he can t and must say goodbye, and emotionally he would be driven to go with Michael Burnham with Discovery into the future, but logically it s not possible. I think maybe at that moment he discovers there s a responsibility he has to tie up his end of the journey, which is to remain.(Photo by John Medland/CBS)The relationship was a continuation from moments that we hadn t seen as viewers. I was really interested in your emotional build to that moment with a person with whom you ve supposedly had such a fraught relationship.Peck: Yeah. I think it s a great competition that exists between the two of them — as does exist between many siblings — and we really, I think, dug into the sibling rivalry of it all. Also, I think they re very similar; they re both hyper-intelligent, they re both, I think, perfect candidates for Starfleet, they have dedicated themselves to something larger than just who they are as single beings. So I think there s a great respect that lives between them that, in the beginning, I don t think is honored, but there s a lot of anger on both sides, but they realize that they probably understand each other more than anybody else understands them, in all the known universe. That feeling of being seen, of being understood, I think, is so essential to satisfying life. I think we all search for understanding and for similarities in one another. Because these are such unique characters, there aren t many like them, and so I think to have found, I guess, sort of an anchor point in reality, is crucial to them becoming something more than they were, to evolving. To quote Spock, This comfort is essential to evolution. I think that really encapsulates what s happening in the second season between Spock and Michael Burnham. In terms of the preparation for that last scene, I think the whole season was preparation for it. I don t think that I, at that point, needed to do that much work, but trust what I had built and what we had built, about Spock and about the crew on Discovery. At the very end when she s saying goodbye, she tells him, “There’s a whole galaxy out there full of people who will reach for you. You have to let them. Find that person who seems farthest from you and reach for them. Reach for them. Let them guide you.” Was that a nod to his future relationships with a personality like Captain Kirk?Peck: Absolutely. I m not sure who came up with that, but I think it was Alex Kurtzman, and I remember him just glittering while he was telling me this revelation that he d had about this moment and about this beacon he s setting for the future in himself that does end up becoming Kirk.Discovery and Burnham shot off through a wormhole into the future, Admiral Cornwell is dead, Georgiou is somewhere out there, Leland died in a puddle of nanites, and Ash Tyler becomes a permanent Commander in Section 31. Spock, meanwhile, rejoins Enterprise and — despite everyone lying to Starfleet and saying that Discovery and her crew, including Burnham, blew up — he recommends that a gag be placed on everyone s knowledge of what happened. What is his interest in making that recommendation?Peck: Because of the dangers of Control. To really completely bury the knowledge of this omnipotent and sinister entity, it should be completely eradicated from the books. Not just physically eradicated, but also conceptually eradicated because of the extraordinary danger that he poses to the universe, or it poses to the universe.(Photo by Russ Martin/CBS)I think I know, but what’s the significance of Spock shaving?Peck: I think it s an externalization of his alteration. I think the beard is an externalization of his inner turmoil and his unraveling. To shave is a settling back into a security of who he is and his comfort with himself. That s what it means to me. It s also a part of his goodbye to Michael. The self that he knew when he was learning from her and being with her, and to shave it is a part of that. What did you make of it?Just him transitioning — like a butterfly coming out of a cocoon — and becoming the man that he would be.Peck. Absolutely. Yeah.Is there any hope that we ll see the Enterprise and Spock again?Peck: Is there hope? Yes, I hope so.Are you signed up for season 3?Peck: I can t say. I know there s nothing out there on it either way.But you do hope so?Peck: Yeah, I hope so.Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on CBS All Access.

Alice Eve is a portrait of a lady playing with fire as married Susan Trenchard flirting with duplicitous bachelor John Bellasis (Adam James) in this exclusive look at the third episode of Belgravia. Julian Fellowes’ TV follow-up to Downton Abbey is based on his book of the same name about 19th century London society confronting the upward mobility of the nouveau riche. In episode 3, Reverend Stephen Bellasis (James Fleet) is forced to reveal the depths of his financial problems, causing his son John to set his manipulative sights on Charles Pope (newcomer Jack Bardoe) and Caroline, , Countess of Brockenhurst (Harriet Walter) as a way to make money; meanwhile, Susan isn’t shy about exploiting the Trenchards’ new social circle.About the show: Belgravia is a story of secrets and scandals amongst the upper echelon of London society in the 19th century. When the Trenchards accept an invitation to the now legendary ball hosted by the Duchess of Richmond on the fateful eve of the Battle of Waterloo, it sets in motion a series of events that will have consequences for decades to come as secrets unravel behind the porticoed doors of London s grandest neighborhoods. The limited series reunites Downton Abbey’s award-winning creative team; with Fellowes adapting his bestselling novel for the screen and Carnival’s Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant executive producing alongside Liz Trubridge and Fellowes. John Alexander (Sense Sensibility, Trust Me) will direct all episodes with Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) producing. In addition to Eve (She’s Out Of My League), Walter (The Crown), Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral), James (Band of Brothers), and Bardoe (in his television debut), Belgravia’s cast includes Tamsin Greig (Episodes), Philip Glenister (Mad Dogs), Tara Fitzgerald (Game of Thrones), Ella Purnell (Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children), Richard Goulding (The Windsors),  Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton), Diana Hardcastle (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Paul Ritter (Chernobyl), and Saskia Reeves (Luther).Belgravia airs Sundays at 9/8c on Epix.

Ghcxuf (Photo by HBO)Expectations for the final season of Game of Thrones were higher than the Red Keep’s tallest spire, and, unfortunately, fans and critics alike were not universally impressed with the way creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss ended the story. Unlike the previous seven seasons — all of which are Certified Fresh with Tomatometer scores well into the 90s — season 8 is not only the lowest-scoring season on the Tomatometer, it is also the first-ever Rotten season of HBO’s fantasy series. How does that work? Let s do a bit of math: While the average score of each of season 8’s episodes is a Fresh 68%, a number of season-level reviews (those that consider the season in its entirety) published following the finale have brought the overall season score down into the Rotten range.“This final season was all about big-huge set pieces, and a lot of the complexity burned away,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Darren Franich of the season as a whole. And Slate’s Willa Paskin noted in her review of the series finale, “Benioff and Weiss organized their entire series around an ending that they didn’t write to.”But Thrones is not the only beloved series that critics felt whiffed its final at-bat. Series with high expectations for their final episodes include everything from HBO’s bro-tastic showbiz satire Entourage to PBS’ prestige TV detective drama Sherlock. And though those expectations might not have been quite as high as the dizzying, dragon-y heights that GoT needed to live up to, both of those series similarly seemed to let down longtime viewers.Below, Rotten Tomatoes has gathered a list of beloved series whose early seasons were high-scoring and usually Certified Fresh — meaning they all received a large number of reviews, with many from top critics, and a score of more than 75% on the Tomatometer — and whose last season or two descended into Rotten territory. Some shows, like The Office, The West Wing, or How I Met Your Mother, managed to turn Rotten penultimate seasons around into Fresh final ones (which is why those three are not included below). But others, including Game of Thrones, Dexter, and Arrested Development, take their place among history’s best-reviewed shows with poorly reviewed endings.A note: We’ve only included series with robust scores, and we would also like to reiterate that this is not an indictment of the included series, but rather a numbers-focused presentation of score drops.Game of Thrones 89% (Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Highest-rated season: Game of Thrones: Season 4 (2014) 97%Final season:  Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%Drop: 44%While showrunners Benioff and Weiss were never going to please everyone, critics pointed to the series penultimate episode, The Bells, as a prime example of how a transportive, well-acted, smartly written drama even non-genre fans can appreciate (per the RT Critics Consensus for season 1) could devolve into such a divisive experience for fans. The Critics Consensus for The Bells  in particular echoes a common complaint from the show s closing moments: too much plot in too little time muddles the story and may leave some viewers feeling its conclusions are unearned. Dexter 71% (Photo by Showtime)Highest-rated season: Dexter: Season 2 (2007) 96%Final season: Dexter: Season 8 (2013) 33%Drop: 61%Seasons 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 of Showtime’s serial killer drama are all Certified Fresh, but seasons 6 and 8 plunged into Rotten territory. The Critics Consensus for season 6 counts “heavy-handed symbolism, an unimpressive villain, and a redundant arc for America s favorite serial killer” among the reasons for its low score, while the season 8 summary calls it a “a bitterly disappointing final season that is so hesitant to punish its anti-hero for his misdeeds, it opts to punish its audience instead.”Weeds 70% (Photo by Showtime)Highest-rated season: Weeds: Season 2 (2006) 100%Final season: Weeds: Season 8 (2012) 40%Drop: 60%The dark comedy followed suburban widow Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) as she began to deal pot to make ends meet following the unexpected death of her husband — and eventually transformed into an international drug kingpin. But while the first season was Certified Fresh and the subsequent ones were generally well-liked, RT’s Critics Consensus for the eighth and final season notes that the “final installment burns the series remaining goodwill down to a sorry roach with perfunctory plotting and a sense that this story no longer resembles the one fans fell in love with.”The Killing 68% (Photo by AMC)Highest-rated season: The Killing: Season 1 (2011) 94%Final season: The Killing: Season 4 (2014) 47%Drop: 53%The Seattle-set slow-burn mystery pursued by homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) started off with “thoughtful writing, believable characters, and realistic horror, even if its season finale was unsatisfying,” per the first season’s Critics Consensus. By the fourth season, resurrected by Netflix following AMC’s cancellation, it succumbed to “silliness” and strayed into “distractingly overwrought territory.”True Blood 70% (Photo by HBO)Highest-rated season: True Blood: Season 3 (2010) 91%Final season: True Blood: Season 7 (2014) 44%Drop: 51%HBO’s vampire drama, based on the Southern Gothic Sookie Stackhouse book series by bestselling author Charlaine Harris, took a few seasons for critics to warm up to it (it started at a barely Fresh 61% in season 1 and reached a series high of 95% in season 3). But the third season’s “graphic thrills, steamy romance, and biting satire for its fans” made way for a Rotten final two seasons, as the series ran out of steam and its seventh season was “content to limp along on familiar plot points.”Arrested Development 74% (Photo by Netflix)Highest-rated season: Arrested Development: Season 1 (2003) 100%Final season: Arrested Development: Season 5 (2018) 55%Drop: 45%, though the drop from season 1 to season 4 was even more drastic at 73%The first season of the formerly short-lived Fox gem is among the rare seasons Certified Fresh at 100%, and the subsequent two seasons that aired on the broadcast network are also strong with 94% and 100% Tomatometer scores, respectively. Netflix’s revival, on the other hand, can’t quite “live up to its own past.” At least the series’ fifth season (55%) was a bit of a second chance for the cast and creators, as season 4’s Critics Consensus put it simply: “They ve made a huge mistake.” (Though the series has not officially been canceled, there s no word on whether Netflix plans to make another season.)UnREAL 81% (Photo by Lifetime)Highest-rated season: UnREAL: Season 1 (2015) 98%Final season: UnREAL: Season 4 () 50%Drop: 43%All three seasons of the dark, Bachelor-skewering drama that aired on Lifetime were Certified Fresh and brought renewed respect to the female-focused network. The fourth season, however, “fizzled out” and went directly to Hulu (“but the clever antics, confidence, and high energy” remained intact, per the season 4 CC).Sherlock 78% (Photo by Laurence Cendrowicz/Hartswood Films & MASTERPIECE)Highest-rated season: Sherlock: Season 2 (2012) 94%Final season: Sherlock: Season 4 (2017) 54%Drop: 39%The first three full seasons of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations were all Certified Fresh with scores in the 90s. But the 2015 Christmas special wasn’t quite as well-received, and the fourth season, which came four years after season 3, was marred by “the lofty expectations created by the series lengthy hiatus.” Hm, sounds familiar…Entourage 66% (Photo by HBO)Highest-rated season: Entourage: Season 5 (2008) 76%Final season: Entourage: Season 8 (2011) 46%Drop: 30%While the Hollywood antics of heartthrob Vinny Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his hangers-on were mostly well-received — most seasons of the HBO comedy are sitting comfortably in the 70s — the seventh season saw a turn as poorly received as Chase’s fictional epic, Medellin. As season 8’s Critics Consensus put it, “With Entourage s best stories behind it, the series finale feels like a merciful end.”Prison Break 60% (Photo by Fox)Highest-rated season: Prison Break: Season 1 (2005) 77%Final season: Prison Break: Season 4 (2008) 50%Drop: 27%The Fox drama’s self-explanatory title meant that the series was always going to have to fight against its own premise — there are only so many prisons to break out of, after all — but after a Certified Fresh debut season and a second installment that maintained the series’ “propulsive momentum,” per season 2’s CC, things went downhill. The third and fourth seasons were both Rotten at 50% — and while the original series finale delivered closure for fans, “the season s ludicrous, plot-breaking twists betray the feeling that this saga should have ended a jailbreak or two before.” Fox’s 2017 revival nearly a decade after the series’ original end, didn’t fare much better: “familiar faces and frenetic action aren t enough to make up for a plot that manages to bore while beggaring belief,” per the Critics Consensus.Like this? 天博bob (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)The stacking references to the Pietro of Two Worlds may matter. Did Wanda some how pluck another universe s Pietro into the MCU? And if so, did he die in a similar manner to our Pietro? If we take it on face value that Peters is playing the same character he portrayed in the three most recent X-Men films, there is some irony to him dying from gunshots. His Pietro, after all, famously appeared in bravura sequences using his speed to dodge all manner of threats. But if we can go meta again, it is also possible Peters is literally playing Evan Peters, an actor who appeared in a film called Kick-Ass with an actor who greatly resembled Wanda s brother. As we still don t know why Wanda is making the specific cultural references she has chosen thus far, pulling the MCU s Peters into her Hex is as valid an idea as anything else.Or, perhaps, we re trying to make up for the lost Full House joke.Would the Hayward Cataract See Vision Used as a Weapon?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Outside of Westview, it is becoming clear that S.W.O.R.D. Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) is up to no good. Many have suspected this for awhile — his missile stunt last week definitely put him in the shady column — but it is now clear he has little interest in helping the people caught up in the Hex.The few things we know about him so far: he s been at S.W.O.R.D for awhile and was the default choice to replace Maria Rambeau after her death. He absolutely believes in the Sokovia Accords and has a pretty dower opinion of super-powered people in general. Also, his interest in the Hex appears to stem from Wanda s theft of Vision s corpse just before WandaVision began. Our first guess, Wanda inadvertently gave him the clearance to use Vision as a drone — something which was expressly forbidden in his will. Considering he is an android made of vibranium, Vision s body could be a valuable asset to aspects of the U.S. government still worried about superheroes so many years after the Sokovia Accords were signed. But as Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) discovered, his plans involve something called Cataract. Whose vision does he hope to impair with Vision?Considering Hayward s stated opinions, maybe he wants to give the Avengers a blind spot. Then again, if S.W.O.R.D. has been around long enough for Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to grow up in the agency, it is possible it was also infiltrated by Hydra. If that s the case, maybe Hayward s aim is not centered on Vision or the Avengers. Maybe this is about recovering Wanda as an asset. Is WandaVision Setting Up Monica s Superhero Origin Story?Debbie DayAnd speaking of Monica, we seem to be getting a lot of set-up about her eventual status quo. For one thing, her test results reveal her cells are changing at the molecular level. We got further confirmation about her history with Carol — although the health of that relationship is still obscure. Even if it is strained, Hayward s comments suggested she is still predisposed to favor superheroes.Back in the comics, Monica adopted the Captain Marvel name for a time, changing it to Photon when the original Captain Marvel s son wanted to use the alias. In the MCU, Photon also happens to be the call sign her mother used when she and Carol flew jets in the Air Force. We bring this up because it seems as though WandaVision is on the precipice of making Monica a superhero. As it happens, her comic book counterpart received her powers after being hit by a wave of extra-dimensional energy — something very much like what seems to be powering the (currently expanding) border of Westview. Her abilities are based around the electromagnetic spectrum with an emphasis on light, and what is television but a guided, information-rich manipulation of light?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Darcy suggested another pass through the energy field could be lethal, but now we wonder if Monica might appear as a light-powered Captain Marvel next week. Well, provided she and Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) end up caught in the expansion of the Hex. In fact, you have to wonder who Darcy will become as she definitely passed through the field. One broke girl, maybe? Also, who is the engineer friend Monica keeps referring to? She s pretty sure this person can get her back into Westview, but their name has been obscured. Some believe this character will be the Luke Skywalker–level cameo promised by Olsen a few weeks back, but do any of the established Marvel characters fit the description we have so far while also having a plausible friendship with Monica prior to the Blip?If we remove the requirement that it has to be someone we ve seen in a Marvel film before — which seems essential for an impact on par with Luke s Mandalorian appearance —  there is one fantastic answer. But that has to be a long shot, right? Also, Marvel Mutant Longshot seems pretty unlikely, too.New episodes of WandaVision premiere on Fridays on Disney+.

Endgame vs. the MCU: After three days, the Fifth Biggest MCU Movie – and Coming for the CrownAt 0 million, Avengers: Endgame immediately becomes the 50th highest-grossing domestic film of all-time. That is already more than Aquaman grossed in 105 days. It also took Captain Marvel 24 days to gross what Endgame did in three; and Endgame is now the fifth highest-grossing film in the MCU. In a remarkable bit of solidarity, Captain Marvel moved up to second place at the box office this weekend, dropping just 11% for an eighth-weekend haul of million. That’s the 10th best eighth weekend of all time (up from last week’s 15th best seventh weekend) and the fifth best this for the current century, behind Avatar (.8 million), Frozen (.7 million), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ( million), and Black Panther (.7 million). And let s get super math-y for a minute. If we were playing the Take Two game from The Price is Right – where you have to pick the cost of two prizes that add up to a specific amount – the only MCU title one could pick to combine with another for a total less than Endgame’s opening weekend is The Incredible Hulk. Take that movie s 4.8 million, match it with Captain America: The First Avenger (6.6 million), Ant-Man (0.2 million), Thor (1.0), or Thor: The Dark World (6.3 million) and you have the only pairings that come up less than Endgame’s 0 million start. Only eight films in the MCU have grossed more in their entire run than Endgame did in three-and-a-third days. There has been no fatigue with the MCU, as frequently as that myth has been told. Endgame had already grossed 5 million outside of the U.S. before even opening here. Through Sunday, Endgame has grossed 9 million internationally (14th all-time) and .2 billion globally (the eighth MCU film to reach that milestone and the fastest ever to pass it). Those numbers make Endgame the 18th highest-grossing film of all time internationally. And it s done that since Thursday.Records on the Horizon: Endgame Sets its Sights on Avatar, The Force Awakens(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Domestically, Avengers: Endgame is now beyond targeting the totals of the two mega-grossing James Cameron films, Avatar and Titanic – because it is going for the big dog. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the highest-grossing film ever domestically, earned 6.7 million here and Endgame is already blowing past all of its early records. Avatar is the all-time world champ with .78 billion – and that s going to be a tough number to beat, even for a film expected to become just the fifth film ever to gross billion worldwide. Other records that Endgame has its eye on for next week include:Biggest 10-Day Gross: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (0 million)Biggest Second Weekend: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (9.2 million)Smallest Drop For A Film Opening To Over 0 million: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (-39.8%)Fifth Highest Worldwide Gross Ever: Jurassic World (.671 billion)It would take a drop of more than 57.4% for Endgame to not break the second-weekend record held by The Force Awakens. Thirteen of the 21 previous MCU films had drops lower than that. We predict that at least two of the records above will fall next week. Though highly unlikely, it would be remarkable if it bests the 39.8% drop of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And if it does, one should expect just about every record to fall after that. This Time Last Year: It All Began With a Record-Breaking First Weekend for Infinity War(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Getting a sense of déjà vu? On this same weekend last year, Avengers: Infinity War grossed 7.6 million, breaking the record for the highest opening weekend ever – a record that lasted officially one year minus a day. Its per-theater-average of ,599 was still second to The Force Awakens, and it would not go on to outgross the all-time champ, nor its Marvel counterpart, Black Panther. That film got a similar boost to what Captain Marvel got this week, dropping just 4% from the previous weekend and finishing in the top five. The rest of the Top 10 grossed a combined .31 million for a grand total of 3.01 million, and the films averaged 59.3% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 7.5 million and averaged 69.5% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Long Shot Set To Top Newcomers, At a Distant SecondJoel MearesIt takes a brave rom-com to go up against a juggernaut, but next week s has the critics on its side. Jonathan Levine’s Long Shot, with Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, is at 84% on the Tomatometer after its SXSW premiere in March. Look for it to lead the newcomers handily. Among those newcomers are STX’s first foray into animation with UglyDolls, based on the line of plush toys. In The Intruder Dennis Quaid pulls a reverse Cold Creek Manor as the previous owner of a home terrorizing the new couple (Michael Ealy and Meagan Good) who have moved in.The Full Top 10: April 26-28Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – 0 million (0 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .05 million (3.58 million total)The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .5 million (.28 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .30 million (.11 million total)Shazam! Kathleen Turner guest stars as Sandy Kominsky s (Douglas) ex-wife. The actors co-starred in Romancing the Stone, The Jewel of the Nile, and The War of the Roses.Unfortunately, their Kominsky Method scene occurs over the phone. They do not share screen time.“I’m hoping, if we go to a third year, that we will see more of her,” Douglas said. “That was so much fun, because obviously, the phone conversation, you both are entirely separate. So I did my whole thing without her being there. But then, because we worked together so much, when she heard my end of the conversation, she just settled right in and did a great job.”Jane Seymour joins the cast of season 2

(Photo by Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for STARZ)Ella Purnell splashed on the scene with a standout role in Tim Burton s Miss Peregrine s Home for Peculiar Children and has since appeared, with Bill Nighy and Matthew Goode, in the critically acclaimed Ordeal By Innocence, which was Certified Fresh at 94% on the Tomatometer and U.S. audiences saw on Amazon. She also played teen Maleficent in the 2014 live-action Disney film that starred Angelina Jolie as the titular Sleeping Beauty villain. The actress is all grown up now and starring as Tess, a 22-year-old who tackles the competitive New York City restaurant scene, in Starz drama Sweetbitter. At the end of the first season, Tess got her coveted job in Howard’s (Paul Sparks) restaurant, which was only the beginning of the drama for Purnell s character. In the season 2 premiere, Howard takes his staff to a farm to see where the food they prepare comes. It seems to affect Tess deeply, and she starts calling some of the chefs out on their cavalier attitude toward their ingredients. There also might be a bright spot in her relationship with Simone (Caitlin FitzGerald) — but how long can it last? When Rotten Tomatoes caught up with Purnell, she told us of her love for Phoebe Waller-Bridge s work and what s in store for her character in season 2.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?(Photo by BBC America)I don’t generally watch that much live TV because I’m always in different time zones and traveling around so much. I can tell you which TV shows I watch every single night religiously when I binge-watch them.My first one has to be Killing Eve, because it’s incredible. I’m obsessed with it. I’m obsessed with Jodie Comer. I’m obsessed with Sandra Oh. I’m really fascinated by shows with female leads, written by females. I know season 1 was Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I don’t think she did the second season, but I still really like the second season. I’ll be intrigued to see where they go after this. I actually first heard about Killing Eve when I was doing press for Sweetbitter because everybody kept comparing Tess and Simone to Villanelle and Eve. That’s how I got into it and they are pretty similar. I love the way that relationship is built.WHAT’S ON YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Fleabag. I love it. It’s too short though. I need more than six episodes, because it’s so addictive. I think I binge-watched the whole first season in one night. It’s so brilliant. The humor is amazing, and it’s interesting once you know that Phoebe is involved in both [Fleabag and Killing Eve]. You can absolutely recognize her writing style and the way she brings characters to life. It’s super unique and so smart. She’s brilliant. There is a show that I can’t stop watching. It’s called Easy. I think that show’s been on for a while, but it just hit Netflix, so I’ve only just kind of discovered it. It’s set in Chicago, and each episode is like an anthology series. It starts off as an anthology series, but I think halfway through season 1 you get to meet the characters from episode one again later. Then by season 2 and season 3, you’re following the same four or five story lines except for then they add new story lines every other episode. Each one is different, but it kind of all centers around relationships, friendships, marriages, couples, all sexualities, all genders. It’s so interesting, all ages. Evan Jonigkeit, who plays Will in Sweetbitter, is on Easy. I was watching the show and I was like, Oh, that’s Evan. And I texted him, “I love your show.” I think it’s all mostly improv and the guys that do it are just like friends who get together and make this thing. It’s such a cool concept, I love it.My last one is Black Mirror. I am always obsessed with Black Mirror. I will watch it. I watched it last night. I rewatch episodes, and every time I rewatch an episode, I learn something new. I’m obsessed with Black Mirror. And Mrs. Maisel — I have to say that. That’s my top five.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)Oh, I haven’t seen Big Little Lies yet. I loved the first season and I love Meryl Streep, so I would say Big Little Lies season 2. The Crown season 3 and 4, I think, have finished filming already. Maybe they haven’t finished yet, but  Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham-Carter are two of my top five favorite actresses, so I cannot wait to watch that. Really excited for that one.(Photo by Starz)Fred Topel for Rotten Tomatoes: Is visiting the farm a game changer for Tess?Ella Purnell: Definitely. I think it’s pretty symbolic of them switching it up. It’s a way of Howard switching things up in the restaurant industry, making everyone aware that sh ’s about to change. But for Tess, it’s also like, Hey, don’t think that just because you’ve got the job that you’re done. That happening wakes her up, I think, from any idea of complacency. Also her reaction to it surprises herself; her curiosity and interest in it reminds her not to underestimate herself and it reminds her that there’s so much stuff she hasn’t seen, so much stuff she hasn’t experienced. It seems to change her attitude in the kitchen. Will that continue?Oh, definitely. Absolutely, yeah. In part, it’s having a better understanding and appreciation for dining as a whole experience, but also the intensity behind it. I think it’s a good reminder to Tessa, like it’s a job. This is kind of each man for himself out there, and I think that becomes apparent in the last scene of the season with a scene between Tess and Howard. She does something really ballsy, really ballsy. And it’s really interesting. I’m really interested to see what people make of that last scene. It’s dramatic.(Photo by Starz)Does Tess and Simone’s relationship become more harmonious?Yeah, I would say so. Well, no, actually. For like a brief second. Episode two they have an incredible bonding experience. You find out a bit more about Tess’s backstory and Tess’s mother and perhaps get an inkling as to why she’s so attracted to Simone, what their relationship is about. I don’t really know. It’s painful. I’m really interested in the relationship. I’m really interested in female relationships in general. I think she’s just as in love with Simone as she is with Jake, so she’s hypersensitive to any changed or nuances in their relationship. I think it’s really painful for Tess.Does Tess’ journey in the restaurant industry have any parallels to yours as an actor?Definitely. I always think it’s so funny how art imitates life in a weird way. Definitely last year was so funny because it was my first time in New York. It was my first time doing TV. So everything she was doing, everything she was experiencing, I was experiencing too for the first time. I’d never worked in this industry, and I was thrown into this new industry. What I mean by that is movies and TV, American television is totally different from anything I’ve ever done, so I was thrown into this thing that I was trying to figure out and keep up with and look like I knew what I was doing in the same way that Tess is. And then the gratification it gives you when you seize life for all its worth is incredible. I moved to New York after we finished filming, and I feel like it’s changed my life, not in a cheesy corny way, but genuinely changed the course of my life.Sweetbitter new episodes air Sundays on Starz.

天博bob This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Scorsese s Killers of the Flower Moon, Flash Gordon, and the Hunger Games prequel. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI S ANIMATED FLASH GORDON WILL BE LIVE ACTION INSTEAD(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images)In the summer of 2019, we first learned that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows) had been hired to write and eventually direct an animated adaptation of the classic serial sci-fi hero Flash Gordon. This week, producer John Davis was doing the PR rounds to promote Jungle Cruise, and he gave a surprising Flash Gordon update that might actually raise the reboot s profile considerably: Instead of being an animated feature as originally planned, Taika Waititi s Flash Gordon will be live action. Although there were three Flash Gordon serials from 1936 to 1940, the character has only headlined one live-action feature film in the 80 years since, which was the 1980 Flash Gordon (Certified Fresh at 83%), starring Sam Jones with a soundtrack by Queen. We can probably expect to wait a few years for Waititi s film, however, as he also has Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), the soccer movie Next Goal Wins, We re Wolves (a mockumentary about werewolves), and his untitled Star Wars movie all currently in the works.Other Top Headlines1. BRENDAN FRASER JOINS MARTIN SCORSESE S KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Lionsgate)Brendan Fraser recently wrapped filming of Darren Aronofsky s The Whale, in which he will play a 600 lb. man seeking to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (played by Sadie Sink from Stranger Things). Now, Fraser is quickly moving from working with one acclaimed director to another, as he has joined the cast of Killers of the Flower Moon, the next film from Martin Scorsese. Fraser will play lawyer W.S. Hamilton in the Apple TV+ and Paramount Pictures feature film, which is based on the true crime story originally depicted in the nonfiction book of the same title by David Grann. Fraser joins a cast that includes Jesse Plemons (in a lead role) and frequent Scorsese collaborators (and Academy Award winners) Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Brendan Fraser has also joined the cast of Brothers, the next movie from director Max Barbakow (Palm Springs, Certified Fresh at 95%).2. JOHN WICK DIRECTOR CHAD STAHELSKI TAKING ON ASSASSIN NOVEL SHIBUMI (Photo by Isa Foltin/Getty Images)Authors nowadays just don t have cool pen names as often as they used to. Trevanian was the nom de plume of an American writer who specialized in airport novels, the most famous of which was probably The Eiger Sanction, which was adapted as the eponymous 1975 assassin movie (Fresh at 68%) starring Clint Eastwood. Chad Stahelski is the stuntman-turned-director behind the John Wick franchise, which is also about a deadly assassin, so you can probably guess where this is going. Even as he s about to begin filming John Wick 4, Stahelski has started developing an adaptation of the 1979 Trevanian novel Shibumi, about an assassin who is recruited to take on a conspiracy of energy companies that secretly controls much of the western world. It s worth noting that Stahelski is accruing a large development slate, of which Shibumi is just the latest, so it will have to wait its turn alongside such projects as Ghost of Tsushima, Classified, Kill or Be Killed, and the Highlander reboot.3. HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)The Young Adult (YA) novel-based movie fad came and went so quickly that it might seem odd to realize that the very first installment of The Hunger Games (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out as recently as nine years ago, and the last movie was only six years ago. That four-film franchise was a huge financial boon to Lionsgate, which grossed nearly billion worldwide from it, but when it ended in 2015, it also left a big, blockbuster-sized hole for them to fill in their production calendar. Luckily for them, author Suzanne Collins published a prequel novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last year. During a quarterly earnings call this week, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake confirmed that filming of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is expected to start in the first half of 2022, aiming for a theatrical release in late 2023 or early 2024. The prequel will tell the story of the 18-year-old (future President) Coriolanus Snow as he gets his chance to be a mentor during the Tenth Hunger Games. Presumably, whoever lands the lead role will resemble a very young Donald Sutherland.4. NICHOLAS HOULT TO STAR AS CREEPY DRACULA HENCHMAN RENFIELD (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bram Stoker s Dracula has the distinction of being the most frequently adapted literary character in film (Sherlock Holmes is the most adapted human literary character). With that many movie versions of Dracula, there have also been dozens of portrayals of his insane, bug-munching human henchman Renfield, but usually as a supporting character. Always looking to continue their Universal Classic Monsters franchise, Universal Pictures is now developing a solo movie for Renfield, with Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class) attached to star. Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) will direct Renfield from a screenplay by Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley, based on an original screenplay by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible). Although no specific premise details have been revealed yet, the setting is believed to be in the modern day, not in the Victorian Era England of the original novel.5. SNL S COLIN JOST CO-WRITING A NEW TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES REBOOT (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a way more complicated history than the casual observer might expect (and it goes all the way back to their start as a grim and gritty Daredevil spoof indie comic book). Besides the first three live-action films, there was also an animated movie in 2007 and a pair of more recent live-action movies in 2014 and 2016 with the turtles as CGI characters (and that s without getting into all the TMNT movies that didn t happen). Last year, we first heard that Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg were developing a CGI reboot feature film with Nickelodeon, but as it turns out, that is now just one of two reboots being developed concurrently. Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost and his brother Casey Jost will also write a second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot for Paramount Pictures. The division between the two reboots seems to be that the Jost brothers are working on a version closer to the gritty comic book origins, while Seth Rogen s is more lighthearted like the 1980s animated TV series. The Jost brothers version will also probably come later than Seth Rogen s, which is currently scheduled for August 11, 2023.6. CHRONICLE SEQUEL FINALLY HAPPENING WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAST (Photo by Alan Markfield/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Up above, we touched upon the came-and-went YA novel adaptation fad, and another trend that has largely fallen out of vogue is the found footage genre first popularized by The Blair Witch Project. For a while, found footage was a lucrative format that gave Hollywood a few surprise hits (such as the Paranormal Activity franchise) and the 2012 superhero drama Chronicle (Certified Fresh at 85%). There was talk for years about a Chronicle sequel, but the personal developments for some of the creatives involved seemed to decrease the chances of that happening, to the point where director Josh Trank said in 2020 that he actively worked to prevent it. As it turns out, however, Jungle Cruise producer John Davis does indeed plan on moving forward with a Chronicle sequel, although it may be a very different film than was originally planned. This sequel will be set about 10 years after the original Chronicle (suggesting filming in 2022?) and will revolve around a group of female college students who discover that they are the next generation with super powers. Davis also did not clarify whether the found footage technique would be used for the Chronicle sequel.7. POPULAR SQUISHMALLOWS PILLOWS TO EXPAND INTO FILM, TV, AND GAMES(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Some trends blow up simply by being the right idea at the right time. Consider, for example, the case of the Squishmallows, an expansive line (1,000+) of character-themed huggable pillows that first launched in 2017 as sort of a cross between pillows, anime influences, and the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s. Squishmallows may have eventually become popular in any case, but their expansion may have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with people seeking something adorable to hug while stuck at home for months. Jazwares, the company behind Squishmallows, is seeking to build upon their newfound success by partnering with the powerful Creative Artists Agency (CAA). CAA will work with Jazware to push the Squishmallows franchise into film, TV, video games, publishing, and live touring. So that doesn t mean that there is a Squishmallows movie project in development just yet, but it certainly sounds like it s just a matter of time.On an Apple device?
