亚博体彩官网登录采用百度引擎9(Baidu 6)That’s it, free folks: “The Iron Throne” (55% on the Tomatometer as of publication) has closed the book on the Game of Thrones world, and completed the saga of why people with the last name of “Stark” should avoid the South at all costs. In honor of the 73 episodes that have been released since 2011, we decided to do a Tomatometer deep dive into all eight seasons. The following statistics cover all 73 episodes of the series, and are accurate as of noon on Monday, May 20, 2019.SPOILER WARNING! WE LOVE DATA AND WE SPOIL THINGS. This article contains spoilers from the entire series of Game of Thrones.THE TOMATOMETER AVERAGE FOR THE SERIES IS 91%(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The 91% Tomatometer average for the 73 episodes does an excellent job of summarizing the series has a whole. A little more than 5 percent of the episodes have been Rotten — four in total, including season 5 s “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” (54%) and season 8 s The Last of the Starks (episode 4, 58%), “The Bells” (episode 5, 47%), and The Iron Throne (episode 6, 55%). The majority of the show, however, has been brilliantly executed and its given us classic episodes like “Baelor” (season 1, episode 9, 100%), “Blackwater” (season 2, episode 9, 100%), and “The Door” (season 6, episode 5, 98%), which are genuinely thrilling and made us feel so many feels. (We miss you, Hodor.)SEASON 8 IS THE LOWEST-RATED SEASON, BUT IT’S STILL FRESH(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Critics have chilled on the GoT world since season 8 brought winter with it. However, the 69% Tomatometer average for the six episodes is still Fresh. The Fresh average can be attributed to the first two episodes, “Winterfell” (92%) and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” (88%), which kicked things off by reuniting the core characters so they could battle a seemingly unstoppable force of ice zombies. It’s too bad that the Tomatometer scores for “The Long Night” (75%), “The Last of the Starks” (58%), “The Bells” (47%), and “The Iron Throne” (55%) plunged to record low scores.THE FIRST IS THE BEST, ACCORDING TO THE TOMATOMETERForget saving the best for last: GoT kicked off its 10-episode first season with the 100% Tomatometer rated “Winter Is Coming,” and it ended with the 100% rated “Fire and Blood.” Not only was the season bookended by perfect episodes, it had a total of eight 100% episodes that critics lost their heads over (sorry, Ned). Only “Lord Snow” (86%) and “The Wolf and the Lion” (95%) failed to achieve perfection.IT’S WAY HARDER TO HIT 100% NOW(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)After season 1 kicked things off with eight 100% episodes, the subsequent seasons have had a hard time matching its Tomatometer dominance. Season 2 had five 100% episodes and season 3 had four, whereas seasons 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 could only manage six perfectly rated episodes between them. (Watch season 5’s “Hardhome” now. It’s amazing!) In fact, the last episode to receive a 100% Tomatometer score was 2016’s “Book of the Stranger” (season 6, episode 4), which is the highest-rated of all the GoT episodes owing to the massive number of reviews it received compared to the rest of the 100% episodes.THE “ON-BOOK” SEASONS SCORE HIGHER THAN THE “OFF-BOOK” SEASONS(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)An explanation for the show’s Tomatometer dip in seasons 6, 7, and 8 can be partly attributed to the show going “off-book.” By the end of season 5, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss couldn’t rely on writer George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire source material any longer. They forged a new path, and the results were still super Fresh — at first. The 86% Tomatometer average for the episodes featured in seasons 6-8 is very good, but when compared to the 95% average for seasons 1-5 it starts looking like the Dothraki army after battling the Night King.ONLY FOUR EPISODES TOTAL ARE ROTTEN(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)With season 8 receiving uncharacteristically low Tomatometer scores, it might be easy to forget how stellar the show has been for 8 seasons. The majority of episodes — 69 of 73, or 94.5 percent — have Fresh scores. As for the four Rotten episodes, the first came in season 5 “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” (54%), featuring the controversial wedding and rape scene between Sansa Stark and Ramsay Bolton. The other three are season 8’s “The Last of the Starks” (58%), “The Bells” (47%), and “The Iron Throne” (57%).CRITICS AREN’T BIG FANS OF DAENERYS AND HER DRAGONS DYING(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Critics loved when Daenerys Targaryen’s three dragons were born during the 100% Tomatometer rated season 1 finale, “Fire and Blood”; however, critics weren’t as hot (pun intended) for the four episodes featuring them getting killed (or killed again). Season 7’s “Beyond the Wall” (84%) and season 8’s “The Long Night” (75%) and “The Last of the Starks” (58%) killed off Rhaegal and Viserion, respectively (twice for Viserion). The series finale, “The Iron Throne” (55%), featured the death of their mother. The result for all four episodes is a 68% Tomatometer average, which is well below the 92% overall Tomatometer score for the 73 episodes.Quick Tomatometer Fact: Episodes featuring a direwolf being killed have a 96.25% Tomatometer average. We still strongly dislike the Freys for killing Grey Wind, though.CRITICS LOVE BIG WEDDINGS, BUT THE LANNISTERS AND STARKS PROBABLY DON’T(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The five GoT episodes featuring very expensive weddings that take place in front of large crowds have 100% Tomatometer scores. Episodes including “The Rains of Castamere” (season 3, episode 9), “The Lion and the Rose” (season 4, episode 2), and “Winter Is Coming” (season 1, episode 1) go BIG with their weddings and occasionally end horribly for beloved (or hated) characters. All of these episodes have 100% scores, and have provided some of the most murderous moments (the Red Wedding), awkward moments (Tyrion and Sansa), and violent moments (Joffrey being poisoned at The Purple Wedding) of the series.Quick Tomatometer Fact: The GoT episodes featuring smaller weddings have an 84% Tomatometer average.LESS DEATH IS BETTER, ACCORDING TO THE TOMATOMETER(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)It turns out that more is less when it comes to death in the GoT world. The 53 episodes featuring fewer than 25 people dying have a Tomatometer average of 93.2%, whereas the 19 deadly episodes (more than 25 kills) have an 89.2% average. While several episodes featuring mass mayhem like “Hardhome” (season 5, episode 8), “The Battle of the Bastards” (season 6, episode 9), and “Blackwater”’ (season 2, episode 9) are excellent, they are outweighed by less deadly episodes, such as the No. 2 ranked “Mockingbird” (season 4, episode 7), that don’t relish in killing too many of our favorite (or least favorite) characters.Quick Tomatometer Facts:Episodes featuring night battles (four episodes averaging 91.25%) Episodes featuring daytime battles (seven episodes averaging 85.8%)Episodes featuring shorter battles (six episodes averaging 92%) Episodes featuring episode long battles (five episodes averaging 82.8%)Episodes featuring a Stark being killed (four episodes averaging 95.5%) Episodes featuring a Lannister(s) being killed (six episodes averaging 89.3%)

200 Best LGBTQ+ Movies of All TimeIt’s been a big few years for LGBTQ films. In 2016, Carol earned six Oscar nominations, and just a year later, for the first time in history, Moonlight became the first LGBTQ+-themed movie to win Best Picture. At the 2019 Oscars, Olivia Colman was named Best Actress for playing the lesbian queen Anne in The Favourite, beating out Can You Ever Forgive Me? s Melissa McCarthy, who played lesbian writer Lee Israel. In 2020, Pedro Almadóvar s Pain and Glory would make a dent on the awards circuit, as would Celine Sciamma s romance Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, one of the best-reviewed movies of recent years. Meanwhile, Love, Simon made history in 2018 as the first mainstream, wide-release teenage rom-com to focus on a gay character (a spin-off TV series, Love, Victor, enters its second season on Hulu this year). And it wasn’t the last: A lesbian romance lies at the center of critically acclaimed high school flick, Booksmart, as well as last year s Christmas rom-com, The Happiest Season. Meanwhile comedy Midas Judd Apatow is currently producing a gay rom-com starring Billy on the Street’s Billy Eichner, which will hit theaters in Summer 2022.Watch: Cinematographer James Laxton breaks down the swimming lesson from MoonlightRead: Critic Ian Thomas Malone on seminal trans film A Fantastic WomanRead: Critic Manuel Betancourt on seminal LGBTQ+ comedy The BirdcageRead: Critic Valerie Complex on Pariah, and how it changed her lifeAll of these films stand on the shoulders of other LGBTQ+ films that have come before. Our list of the 200 Best LGBTQ+ Movies of All Time stretches back 90 years to the pioneering German film, Mädchen in Uniform, which was subsequently banned by the Nazis, and crosses multiple continents, cultures, and genres. There are broad American comedies (The Birdcage), artful Korean crime dramas (The Handmaiden), groundbreaking indies (Tangerine), and landmark documentaries (Paris Is Burning). In our latest thorough update to the list, we added titles like the documentary Welcome to Chechnya, about LGBTQ+ activists risking their lives for the cause in Russia; Certified Fresh comedy Shiva, Baby; and Netflix s The Old Guard, a rare movie about super beings that showed a same-sex relationship between two of its heroes. When revising this list in further recent updates, we ve also looked to include more stories from outside of the U.S., and we re excited for people to discover films like Taboo (Gohatto), a gay love story set during the waning years of the samurai era; The Wound (Inxeba), centered around three men during a tribal initiation ceremony in Africa; and Australian film 52 Tuesdays, about the relationship between a daughter and her mother who is undergoing a gender transition. To be considered for the list, a movie had to prominently feature gay, lesbian, trans, or queer characters; concern itself centrally with LGBTQ+ themes; present its LGBTQ+ characters in a fair and realistic light; and/or be seen as a touchpoint in the evolution of queer cinema. And it had to be Fresh. The final list was culled from a longlist of hundreds, after which the films were ranked according to the Adjusted Tomatometer, which acts as a kind of inflation adjustment, taking into consideration the Tomatometer score, as well as the number of reviews a film received relative to the average number of reviews for films released that same year. We did not include miniseries, leaving out seminal works like Angels in America, nor movies made for TV. (Movies released on streaming services, such as new addition Mucho Mucho Amor, were included.) And we recognize that some of the films in the list will re-ignite healthy debates that have been fixtures of discussion around LGBTQ+ films — straight actors playing gay characters, cis actors playing trans characters, and the historical dominance of white male perspectives. We’d encourage those debates to continue, respectfully, in the comments section below. (And speaking of comments: yes, we know that But I’m a Cheerleader is missing — we love it too! — but it’s Rotten.)For now, join us as we celebrate the work of hundreds of filmmakers whose talents and risks have opened up the possibilities of cinema.Best LGBTQ+ Movies200-151 | 150-101 | 100-51 | 50-1

The movie was groundbreaking for setting the zombie template, but also through its casting of Duane Jones as its hero, an everyman of color. He leads survivors through Night, up until its provocative ending, when director George A. Romero inextricably binds the horror genre to America s dark living history.Jones other starring movie was 1973 s Ganja Hess, for which writer/director Bill Gunn uses vampires to press into societal breakdowns. This kind of elevated horror has given definition to many Black horror films, including, obviously, Jordan Peele s Best Picture-nominated Get Out, but also the Chicago-set Candyman and Oprah Winfrey-starring Beloved.Of course, horror is there for lights-out entertainment, like 90s classics Def by Temptation and Tales from the Hood, and with crossovers into the gothic (Eve s Bayou), sci-fi (Attack the Block), thrillers (Ma), war (Overlord), and superheroes (Bla

It was not a notable weekend at the box office. Though the same-day streaming question certainly comes into play for one particular title, it was not a factor for the new films which led the way with some historic lows. How much new concerns over rising COVID cases across the country factored into the overall poor box office is something to take into consideration. But it might also have just been a lack of interest in the two new major titles on offer.King of the Crop: Old Win Shows Mixed Signs For Box Office Health (Photo by © Universal Pictures)Most analysts gave the edge to a certain G.I. Joe character this weekend. Then it looked like it could be a toss-up for the top slot. Ultimately, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest, Old, won handily. (Well, handily by just .7 million, but considering estimates had Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins leading with a much wider gap it was a clear and surprising reversal.)While it may surprise those chiming in on the frequent discourse over the director’s output, Old s weekend haul of .5 million is actually the lowest opening for any of his films since his breakthrough of The Sixth Sense back in 1999. The last two entries in his Unbreakable trilogy, Split and Glass, opened to million and .3 million, respectively, in 2017 and 2019. Before this weekend, his lowest opening was Lady in the Water’s million, which went on to take a career-low overall .28 million. That was the start of four straight losers at the box office for Shyamalan, including The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth. The filmmaker had found a bit of career resurgence starting with The Visit in 2015 kicking off a recent string of low-budget, high-concept films that turned a healthy profit.Recommended: M. Night Shyamalan Is Feeling More and More Like His Maverick Younger SelfOn the glass half-full side, Old is another low-budget effort ( million) that may seem a bit disappointing at the moment but is hardly going to rattle Universal’s books. The half-empty side is actually more on the theatrical industry seeing as how Old is the lowest-grossing film to debut at number 1 in July in 25 years since A Time To Kill on the weekend of July 26, 1996, which actually coincided with the Atlanta Olympics that year. (This stat does not include last year when movie theaters were mostly closed.) That John Grisham adaptation actually went on to gross over 8 million, something Old will not come close to doing, but this is the third weekend since Memorial Day that the leading film grossed under million. Rotten Returns: Snake Eyes Gamble Fails to Pay Off(Photo by Ed Araquel/Paramount Pictures)Paramount moved Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins into Summer from its originally re-scheduled October date. Not that the numbers would have looked any better three months from now, but a .3 million start in July for an million-budgeted film must have someone wondering if they could have sold it to Amazon when they were having a fire sale (Coming 2 America, Without Remorse, The Tomorrow War). This is surely about more than just rising Delta variants, though, when you consider that The Rise of Cobra opened to .7 million in 2009 and Retaliation started with .5 million in 2013. That’s eight years since the last film and this is basically the second attempt to reboot the whole franchise and there have only been three movies. Perhaps the studio can take some comfort that critics have been slightly kinder to it (42% on the Tomatmeter) than the 35% and 28% Tomatometer scores of the previous films. Also qualifying is Roadside’s pick-up of Joe Bell (formerly Good Joe Bell), from Solstice Studios, which was anything but good this weekend with both a 37% on the Tomatometer and a place out of the top 10 with just 7,000 in 1,094 theaters for only a 6 per-screen-average – that is the lowest per-screen-average for any film released in over 1,000 theaters this year behind Land (1) and Voyagers (0).The Top 10 And Beyond: A New Legacy Suffers Crushing Second Quarter with 69% Dropoff(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The weekend was actually nearly even worse for Space Jam: A New Legacy, which became just the 10th film ever to open to over million and have a second weekend under million. A 69% drop from last week s .7 million to this week s .5 million actually makes it the first “PG”-rated family film to join this league. Look at the company it has now joined:The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) (.48 million-to-.89 million)The Wolfman (.47 million-to-.89 million)Saw V (.05 million-to-.74 million)Space Jam: A New Legacy (.05 million-to-.5 million)Dark Phoenix (.82 million-to-.35 million)A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) (.90 million-to-.11 million)The Purge (.05 million-to-.31 million)Bruno (.61 million-to-.31 million)The Devil Inside (.73 million-to-.02 million)Friday the 13th (2009) (.57 million-to-.94 million)Twenty-five years ago, Michael Jordan’s Space Jam had a 41% drop over Thanksgiving weekend to .2 million. LeBron James’ Space Jam: A New Legacy is now looking more like The Purge: Anarchy, which opened to .8 million and dropped 64.8% to .4 million and had .8 million in the bank after 10 days. A New Legacy stands at .4 million and if it continues along this pace will end up somewhere around million. The bright side is it will be the second highest-grossing film domestically for Warner Bros./HBO Max along with the highest-grossing non-PG-13-rated family film this year. The down side is the 0 million-budgeted film will not come close to breaking even, nor matching the million/0 million domestic/worldwide haul of the Jordan film. For the time being it appears that 5 million may be the new throne standard for films in the pandemic hybrid era. A Quiet Place Part II is not going to get there but still remains the most impressive earner of this period. Black Widow, which has its eyes on the throne, fell another 55% this weekend down to .6 million. Its total stands at 4.8 million, which squeaks it into the top 25 all-time July releases after 17 days. The Marvel film’s third weekend is a bit more then what The Amazing Spider-Man made in weekend three, though that film ranks 14th on the aforementioned list with 7.7 million. However, if you compare the film to Star Trek Beyond, which had a million third weekend with 7 million in the bank, Black Widow’s final number could be closer to 5 million. It has grossed over 4 million worldwide, but its odds of reaching 0 million domestically have significantly decreased. Current throne holder, F9, stands at 3 million after five weeks and is also forging a similar pace with Star Trek Beyond, which had a .9 million in its fifth weekend. F9 made .46 million and looks to be stalling out, as expected over the past several weeks, at right around 5 million.Down the list, Universal is watching The Boss Baby: Family Business and The Forever Purge settle into the million and million regions. Sony is not having any greater success with their sequel, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, which can only hope to hit million at this point. The Anthony Bourdain documentary, Roadrunner, managed to stay another weekend in the top 10 and is up to .7 million. On The Vine: Green Knights, Cruise Captains, and An American AbroadNext week has something for families and adult moviegoers up and down. Leading the way, no doubt, will be the latest Disney ride-turned-motion-picture, Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The film should easily take the number 1 slot, but will also be competing against itself with  Premier Access on Disney+. Exclusively in theaters will be Oscar-winner Tom McCarthy’s Stillwater with Matt Damon on a quest to Marseilles find out the truth over his Amanda Knox-like daughter played by Abigail Breslin. Then you can also look for David Lowery’s take on Arthurian legend with The Green Knight, starring Dev Patel, and Sony Classics releasing one of the best-reviewed films of Sundance 2020, Nine Days, featuring Winston Duke.Full List of Box Office Results: July 23-25, 2021

The numbers were also down on streaming and cable, largely due to shutdowns on series like The L Word and Killing Eve.Other findings in the report: more than half of LGBTQ characters on cable TV are people of color; female LGBTQ regular and recurring characters on broadcast primetime outnumber males; almost half of LGBTQ characters on scripted cable outlets are found on FX, Freeform, and Showtime; nearly 20 percent of LGBTQ characters on TV spring from just four show creators and writers, including Ryan Murphy, Lena Waithe, Shonda Rhimes, and Greg Berlanti; and the number of characters living with HIV dropped from nine to three, and all three are on the FX drama Pose.PaleyFest 2021 To Feature a Six Feet Under Reunion(Photo by HBO/Getty Images)PaleyFest will be a virtual event again this spring, and the first events for the 2021 version include a Six Feet Under reunion with creator Alan Ball and cast and panels on ABC’s new drama Big Sky and CBS’s The Late Late Show With James Corden. If there were any doubts remaining that Westworld got a reboot with its third season, the HBO sci-fi series smothered them with its Sunday finale, potentially losing a main character and almost all of the checks on the human extermination that is seen as inevitable in countless fictions about artificial intelligence.Spoiler alert: The following reveals plot details for the finale of season 3 of Westworld. Stop here if you haven t watched the episode.(Photo by HBO)Maeve’s (Thandie Newton) exercise of free will in choosing chaos and her adoption of Caleb (Aaron Paul), who was orphaned by Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) apparent deletion, stands as the last best hope for humanity. The Charlotte Hale–bot (Tessa Thompson) figures on the other side of the equation. Driven by a nihilistic streak, holding the reins of Host regeneration, and bent on revenge, Charlotte commanded — surely it wasn’t an original thought — the Man in Black Host (Ed Harris) to eliminate his human counterpart William in the post-credits scene, which also gave us a glimpse of the Host horde Charlotte is constructing. You too will be assimilated. For all of its reinvention, Westworld’s season 3 is Certified Fresh at 79%, with its first six episodes averaging 82%. The season fell victim to the Game of Thrones curse, however, with its final two episodes earning Rotten scores, and the finale, “Crisis Theory,” garnering the lowest episode score of the entire series.“Though the third season often succumbed to mission drift, the show did at least follow through on the likelihood that the cost of freedom would be oblivion. But the payoffs elsewhere were close to nonexistent,” Scott Tobias wrote for the New York Times. But Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibbard sees a silver lining: “Westworld season 3 ended in a rather Westworld-ian way: By hitting its narrative control-alt-delete keys all at the same time for a potential re-re-reboot of the story for next season.”The question now is what that re-re-reboot might entail. Here are five things we think fans need to see in the recently announced season 4.1. The Return of Dolores(Photo by HBO)A person could argue that the song of Dolores has ended with her data wipe, but there are so many ways in which the character could return. Evan Rachel Wood drove the past two seasons exquisitely as the Hostess with the most-est. Maybe this is just personal preference, but the idea that you can’t keep a good woman down holds a lot of appeal. She could be patched together from the pieces of her memory that she stashed in other Hosts. Or, given the data redundancies required in corporate life even now, it seems too simplistic to think that the Dolores on the slab under Rehoboam with her memories being systematically deleted represented the very last version of her consciousness. Surely, she was backed up to the Cloud.2. What Bernard Lowe Discovered in the Sublime(Photo by HBO)What does robot bliss look like? In season 2, we saw it as a human ideal: a bucolic dreamscape of rolling green vistas. In the post-credits scene, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) returned to the human reality covered in dust, and season 4 will tell us if that was a time-jump and those layers of dirt represented years having passed or a nearer future in which the destruction of the first human exterminations has begun. Before Bernard went under, Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) — no doubt now moldy in the bathtub — asked him what he hoped to find in the Sublime. An answer, Bernard replied, to what comes after the end of the world. But does he mean in the physical world or in the Sublime?3. Maeve and Caleb: Is There a Place for Them? (Photo by HBO)Are Maeve and Caleb now BFFs? Or has she simply committed herself to his well-being? At the end of the finale, Maeve was shining her maternal light on him hard. Are you ready, darling? she purred. He was skeptical: For what? She: This is the new world, and in this world, you can be whoever the f you want. Skyscrapers burned in the background. This story is just beginning. Maeve embraced Dolores plan in the end — or, at least, didn t stand in the way of it — and protected Caleb by turning on Rehoboam-puppet Serac (Vincent Cassel). The question is: To what end? If Maeve drank Dolores Kool-Aid, will she promote Caleb as the leader of the future s human resistance? Does she even know what Hale-bot has in the works? Season 4 no doubt will feature Maeve wrestling with the human cause and her own interests.4. Charlotte Heading Up Skynet(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Crispy Charlotte told Dolores Prime that, no, she s not mad; she s just hell-bent on securing the Hosts place on Earth. Now that she s replaced white-straightjacket human William with Man in Black Host William, she has a ruthless robot general to marshal her robot army. Or not. One thing is for certain: Charlotte (Dolores-lite) will be responsible for the mass casualty events promised by Rehoboam s predictions: at 1–3 years, 6–10 years, and 12–16 years, with a population collapse at 23 years and the end of human civilization in 50–125 years. Do fans want to see what that 50–125 year period will look like? Will Delos Inc. be renamed Skynet ?5. Artificial Intelligence Becoming Aware of Its Own Emotional Intelligence(Photo by HBO)During a finale fight with Maeve, Dolores revealed that she was the first of their kind who worked — that, like Adam and Eve, the others were made from her metaphorical rib bone. Perhaps that is why Dolores is so ahead of the curve, forging a path over the course of the series from puppet, unaware of the strings controlling her, to vigilante, seeking violent retribution for the crimes against her, to martyr, sacrificing herself for the (possible) good of the many. Westworld viewers need to see Charlotte and her thugs struggle toward the last part of that existential crisis as the war for self-determination between humans and robots rages. What do you think Westworld has in store in season 4? Do you think Dolores is permanently erased? Tell us in the comments what you would like to see happen.

t is shaken when a sudden event makes her rethink her teen years and who she really wants to be.Justin Timberlake will play The Gong Show host Chuck Barris in an Apple TV+ series about Barris’ life. Sony Pictures Television has tapped The LEGO Movie and Cloudy with a Change of Meatballs filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller to develop a number of programs based on the company s piece of Marvel Entertainment as part of an overall development deal, according to news reports. At first glance, it definitely looks like a good fit, as Lord co-wrote Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the phenomenal, Oscar-winning, and Certified Fresh debut of Spider-Man Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in theaters — who will likely continue his adventures on the big screen. But can the duo sustain a whole Spider-Verse industry with just the intellectual property available to them through Sony’s control of Spider-Man and related characters? Perhaps these five TV show ideas prove just how easy it will be to build a television Spider-Verse.Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-HamOriginal Creators: Tom DeFalco and Mark ArmstrongFormat: half-hour animated seriesConsidering the impact Spider-Ham made in Into the Spider-Verse, we’ll be stunned if a Spider-Ham animated series was not the first thought Miller and Lord had when the ink dried on their deal.Originally a goof character in one of Marvel’s honest-to-goodness funny books, Peter Porker stayed around to earn his own title. The conscious funny animal parody of Spider-Man is a key part of the appeal – and why he is such a success in the film – and it is easy to imagine a half-hour cartoon playing on the fact Spider-Ham and his world’s inhabitants know they are cartoons. Spider-Ham could face Mysteriape, the Buzzard (Spider-Ham’s take on The Vulture), and the King-Pig – a part we’re sure Vincent D’Onofrio would love to make his own. To say nothing about Spider-Ham’s team-ups with Goose Rider and Deerdevil! Provided the Spider-Ham spoofs of Ghost Rider and Daredevil are part of Sony’s Spider-Man IP package, of course. The series would have to be more than punny names and one-liners. But considering Lord and Miller managed to find emotional content in LEGO minifigs and a spoof of 21 Jump Street, the hardest part will be casting the voices joining John Mulaney on this journey. We are, of course, presuming he would return to voice Spider-Ham. He already reprised the role for the Caught in the Act short film accompanying the home video release of Into the Spider-Verse.If there is one stumbling block, it may be Marvel Entertainment’s – and therefore Disney’s – general control of the characters in regards to television animation; they produce the current Spider-Man cartoon, for example. It is entirely possible they would the first shot at an animated Spider-Ham series.Spider-GwenOriginal Creators: Jason Latour and Robbie RodriguezFormat: hour-long live-action dramaThe Spider-Gwen comics re-imagine Spider-Man s ill-fated girlfriend Gwen Stacy as the one bitten by the radioactive spider on that high school field trip. She becomes Spider-Woman, while Peter uses his abilities with science to emulate her. The premise is full of great hooks thanks to the way it restructures Spider-Man s origins and world. Peter, for example, becomes the Lizard and after he attacks the school dance, Spider-Woman ends up blamed for his death. On her world, Matt Murdoch is both the Kingpin and one of her constant adversaries, Peggy Carter is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and a female Sam Wilson is the Captain America who fought in World War II (Steve Rogers made comics about her exploits after she vanished at the end of the war). But all of those changes to established characters underpin the relationships between Gwen and her friends – which include Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant, and Glory Grant – and with her father, Captain George Stacy. He initially hunts Spider-Woman not knowing she and Gwen are the same person. And considering a lot of the elements of Spider-Gwen’s larger world would not be available to the production because of complicated rights reasons – Matt Murdoch cannot be a live-action character until 2023 thanks to the original deal with Netflix, for example – getting to the meat of Gwen’s story would be key in a live action take on the comic book. Keeping her identity secret from her father definitely makes for a great season 1 story.Silver SableOriginal Creators: Tom DeFalco and Ron FrenzFormat: hour-long live-action dramaBut for a character without complicated rights issues, Lord and Miller could turn to Silver Sable, a character so clearly in Sony’s control, they very nearly made a film teaming her up with Black Cat. It had a release date at one time and director Gina Prince-Bythewood (who defined the look of Marvel’s Cloak Dagger) set to helm the production. Then Sony separated the characters into their own projects. Now, it is unclear if it is happening at all. But maybe the character would be better served on television. As the owner of a private military contracting service, Silver Sablinova could find herself in a political drama like The West Wing or a spy game program like Alias. Trained by her father to hunt Nazis, Silver Sable personally handles any contract which leads to the apprehension or elimination of war criminals. Using those ideas, a Silver Sable TV show could be one of the meatier and grittier programs Miller and Lord develop. Provided Sony wants something more like Homeland, of course. If the company really wants multiple television shows, varying up the tone and pitching the content to different age groups will be a must. And even if the show skews more toward the adventure aspects with less of an emphasis on geopolitics or Silver Sable’s interior life, it could prove to be the concept meant for an older audience. Also, we’d welcome another pilot directed by Prince-Bythewood, who made the first episode of Cloak Dagger quite compelling despite the fact the title characters only meet for a minute or two near the end.Spider-Man NoirOriginal Creators: David Hine, Fabrice Sapolsky, and  Carmine Di GiandomenicoFormat: hour-long live-action limited series or half-hour animated seriesWe’ll be honest, Spider-Man Noir, whether voiced by Nicolas Cage or not, really cannot sustain a long-running television series in the vein of Arrow or even Daredevil. But if designed as an eight-episode limited series, it has just enough of a premise and style to make it a stand-out short-run television program. Then again, a Lord and Miller series based on the concept could take its cues from the original 2009 Spider-Man Noir comic book miniseries, in which Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich uses his network of informants to blackmail local crime boss “the Goblin” and pay for his secret drug addiction with the money. Peter initially appears as someone Ben takes under his wing in this story, until Peter gets bitten by a mystical spider – science takes a back seat to mysticism in this reality – and learns the truth about Ben. While things do not turn out great for Ben in the comic, keeping him the focus of a television series and Spider-Man as something of a mystery re-centers the concept in thrilling way. Ben becomes the eyes and ears of a heavily shadowed 1934 in which we see characters we recognize, but in whole new ways; like the Chameleon as a simple master of disguise or Otto Octavius as a Nazi agent. The reality of producing a show with a stylized period aesthetic would keep Spider-Man Noir a limited series – or turn it into a prestige animated program – but it could be strong enough to commission a second eight-episode run.

(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )M. Night Shyamalan moves on from his Eastrail 177 Trilogy, the grounded superhero saga that began with Unbreakable two decades ago and concluded with 2019 s Glass, with his latest theatrical release, Old, an original thriller that has M. Night Shyamalan written all over it.For starters, there s the high-concept conceit, drawn from the graphic novel Sandcastle: a set of vacationing families find themselves trapped on a secluded beach, mysteriously unable to leave, and soon discover they re aging at a rapid pace. (Among the first clues? A small child notices her pants are suddenly very tight.) Then there s the usual Shyamalan touches, beloved by so many fans, since he broke through with The Sixth Sense: a cast of incredible actors asked to play it straight in some seriously outlandish circumstances (Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps, Gael García Bernal, among others); elegant and disorientating cinematography courtesy of frequent collaborator Mike Gioulakis; several WTF moments that will stick with you long after the credits roll; a cameo from the man himself; and maybe even a twist. (Don t worry, though, this is a spoiler-free zone.)And yet, despite some sense of familiarity, there are ways in which Old feels like nothing Night, as those who work with him know him, has ever done before – and not just because it wasn t shot in his hometown of Philadelphia. There s a go-for-broke spirit to the movie that s invigorating to witness, a quality that has increasingly infused his work since his time on the low-budget and critically acclaimed The Visit rejuvenated his passion for moviemaking.Speaking to Shyamalan a couple of week s before Old s theatrical release, we found him in a reflective mood, sharing with us that he feels more like the director who made The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, when he was in his late 20s and early 30s, than he does feel like himself at 40, when he says he was playing it safe. When I was 20-something, those movies I was making, Unbreakable and things like that, I remember distinctly not caring about that, Shyamalan said. Now I m not all the way back there, but I feel closer to that, to the young version of me that way – as Old goes out, the provocative nature of it, its dissonant nature, is something I love. With his latest provocation about to stir up audiences, Shyamalan spoke to us about kicking safety to the curb – while also developing actual safety protocols for one of the first films shot during the COVID-19 pandemic – plus his embrace of gothic horror elements, the fear of aging, and why his movies need to be seen on the big screen.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You’ve spoken in the past about limitations and how limitations can force creativity – and that was the case when it came to the budgets on The Visit and Split – and it rejuvenated your filmmaking in some ways. On this film, it seems you had so many limitations: You were shooting under COVID, you were under the pump on time, you were shooting in the jungle in the Dominican Republic. What was the biggest filmmaking challenge with Old and how did that lead to innovation and creativity for you?M. Night Shyamalan: I had a thought when you were talking just now that the reason that limitations cause this interesting reaction is, in many ways – and it s what the characters went through [in the movie] – you go to this thesis of, “What is most important?” It is the most important thing that bubbles up. I only have this much money, this much time: What are we trying to achieve? Well, I need to have her do this. I need to have this feeling about it. I definitely need this shot What s important bubbles up and really those are the things that you need and everything else you can throw out the window. It strips you almost of your nonsense, or the things that are not important, by creating limitations. And that s what happens to the characters in Old, obviously, when they re thinking about time speeding up so much. For me – maybe this is the way my mind works and maybe others are like this – you get clouded by more options. There are those studies, where if you give people four things to choose from, they re pretty clear, everybody s kind of in agreement about which one is the best, if it s a strawberry jam or whatever it is. But if you give them 20, everybody s confused about what s what, and you can t hold that much. So, limitations actually give you a sense of place and time and being able to know what your opinion is. I think a little bit of that happens for me, so I try to limit it as much as possible. All of these things that happen made me razor-sharp.(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )Rotten Tomatoes: You shot this during the pandemic, and quite early on. Were COVID protocols a pressure that you had trouble with or did you roll with them? What was the impact on the production? Shyamalan: We were so early in this – we were the first ones shooting [during the pandemic] – that I was making up the COVID protocols. It was my protocols that we were going by; I became like some kind of medical sleuth or something. Luckily, a lot of my family s doctors, so I had some basis of how to do this. So I was just making up this protocol. And then when we were done, other productions asked us how we did this because we had zero cases on our production. But it was dogmatic. I knew some things about human nature: I ll never stop that crew member and that crew member from hooking up, I m never going to be able to stop that. In fact, the more I say, Don t hook up, they re going to hook up, right? So how can I create an environment where everyone can be humans and ask them to do things that are reasonable to keep us safe? I said, Here s the hotel, here s our crew. We re all staying here. You re allowed to go from here to the set and back. I ll bring you the food. I ll bring you the entertainment. Everyone is staying with us. The concierge is staying with us – everyone. Then have fun in between. Knock yourself out, but don t leave your [bubble]. Can you do this for 10 weeks? That was kind of the equation. Those were the protocols and it created a theater-camp quality to what we were doing that didn t feel like work anymore. It felt special and I want to feel that way always about making movies.(Photo by © Universal Pictures)Rotten Tomatoes: You mentioned earlier that the important stuff bubbles to the surface, and you spoke about particular shots you needed to get. This film feels in many ways like your most ambitious visually, I think, just in terms of the number of intense tracking shots and the almost Altman-esque moments where you’re picking up action and dialogue as the camera is swirling around the beach. Can you talk about the visual style of Old and your decision to really go with these extreme camera angles and approaches that are pretty disorienting?Shyamalan: Yeah. Thank you for noticing it. I think I really wanted to push the cinematography. The way we tell the story, that language is critical to the experience of it, the disorienting quality of what they were feeling on that beach, the kind of almost nightmare, the ghoulish nightmare, that they found themselves in. [We wanted to] replicate that with the emotions that are evoked from the choices of cinema. We were very much influenced by Australian New Wave movies: Walkabout, Picnic At Hanging Rock. It s funny you mentioned Altman, because he s always an influence for me and Mikey [Gioulakis, cinematographer] when we make movies. Whatever [the camera] catches, it catches it seemingly, it’s catching things on the periphery and the layers of conversation and all.As always, every shot is drawn out [first], but I got to make the movie multiple times in hand form before we shot. The pandemic didn t allow me to shoot when I wanted to shoot, but I had already been ready. So I kept on redrawing and thinking of this shot and this shot. So it was probably, I would say, since Sixth Sense, actually, the most time I spent on the shots before we went to shoot.(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )Rotten Tomatoes: I know you ve mentioned before that you don t necessarily set out to make horror movies  per se, but I felt Old had elements – more than some of your other films – of horror, and body horror in particular. There are a few moments, without spoiling it, that we go maybe full Cronenberg-esque. How fun was it to create shocking body horror moments, which is something that I don t think you ve dabbled in quite as much as you do here?Shyamalan; No, I haven t. It s funny you should say that because, Cronenberg… it didn t strike me as that as much as, I don t know, the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark or something, or Poltergeist, where there are some Gothic elements at those moments of people melting or things like that, which I found as a child very, very evocative and my imagination, it went into another genre a little bit. I loved it tipping into Gothic horror for those moments that you re referencing, just touching it like that and then [coming] back to kind of a grounded place.Rotten Tomatoes: It certainly evokes a reaction in the audience! The movie deals with the ultimate fear for many people – and it s certainly the ultimate fear for Abbey Lee s character – aging. Is aging something that you think about consciously a lot? Shyamalan: I m strangely okay with aging. I don t go to my birthdays and feel like, Oh my God. Here we go. Okay. It s not like that, but I m fascinated with the way my mind is changing or my perception of my relationships and things is changing. It s definitely not the same as it was. I don t take in things the same way. I tried to reference that in the movie, that not only your body s changing, but you re taking in information in the world differently as you age.You were referencing Abbey s character, and for me she kind of represented a little bit of where society is going, the body image and [idea that] you re only valid because you re your own brand on Instagram. I m going to do this, I m going to filter this, and do this and do that stuff. Imagine somebody who was kind of a king at this, who was a goddess because of what she looked like, and then now on this beach it s going [away]: What bubbles up to her? What is important to her? What is important to her now that you know that [beauty] is going to get stripped from you and is of no value when time is moving this fast? So the character starts to think about other things.(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )Rotten Tomatoes: The other question I had about aging is, how do you feel you ve changed as a director as you ve grown older? You re not an old man, of course, but you re certainly older than when you made The Sixth Sense.Shyamalan: I think I strangely feel closer to the way I was when I was late-20s and 30 now than I did when I was 40. At 40, I felt much more I wanted to be accepted. I wanted to be safe. I felt more value in finding stability and safety than in being a maverick or being like, Hey I m going to do this thing because I like it.” But when I was 20-something, those movies I was making, Unbreakable and things like that, I remember distinctly not caring about that. Now I m not all the way back there, but I feel closer to that, to the young version of me that way – as Old goes out, the provocative nature of it, its dissonant nature, is something I love.I think probably the difference now from that Unbreakable guy is that I know that that s what s going to resonate. I know it, no matter what happens in 10 days, I know that that s what s going to echo, that thing that s weird about it. Whereas the younger form of me, I felt almost ashamed of my instincts, that they were weird and different, and I was, Oh no, no, I ll do something that s easier to swallow. I remember me having that feeling like, God, those are your instincts, but people don t like that. Whereas now I m like, I know that that s the voice that they re going to remember. So there s a knowledge that came from time. So I hope I can continually risk and risk and risk and risk and not want to keep myself safe, which is what I felt when I was younger.(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )Rotten Tomatoes: Last time we spoke, we were talking about your Apple TV+ series Servant, and you were saying that while that series is made for streaming, your movie projects are definitely intended for the big screen. And Old is coming out on the big screen – no streaming option. As we’re transitioning out of pandemic era, and everybody s watching the box office numbers, are you stressed about that at all? Also, it seems that genre films are the ones that are punching through with box office wins, like The Conjuring, A Quiet Place Part II. I wonder if you have any ideas as to why those are the kinds of films that are drawing audiences back to theaters, when others, say, aren t being as successful at this time.Shyamalan: I have two answers to that. So, first, the box office is absolutely fine. In fact, it s more buoyant and alive than ever. People want to be together. I don t buy for a second that the theater-going experience is damaged. Not for a second, no matter what corporation tells you that, complete lie. Complete lie. It is the best way to see a movie. Everyone wants to be in the best version of it. They want to experience it together. Now, there are certain genres that appeal more for that experience and one of them is when you re thrilled and you re scared. You want to see the gasps and experience it together. When you re alone and experiencing that, it feels almost bad. You want to be grabbing the person next to you or giggling because you got a scare. You want to share that experience; luckily, I m in a genre that leans towards that group experience even more.I have felt what you ve seen now, post-pandemic, is that the movies that are exclusively in the movie theater are doing extremely well and doing great. So I m very happy as we open up, the world s opening up, to come back and tell stories in the movie theater. That s my church. That s what I do for a living and the rest is a different type of experience; it s a great experience, but it s not the commitment that I m asking of you. You can t talk to your sister and make a taco. You can t do that. One of my friends was like, Oh, I love Servant. I saw that episode. It s fantastic. I was on the treadmill. I loved it. What? You watched it on the treadmill? I was like, Ah Old is in theaters from Friday July 23, 2021.On an Apple device? (Photo by FX)Since its debut three years ago, FX’s Legion has been one of the most compelling, mind-bending, and uniquely heartfelt series to spin out of a comic book. That it focused on a relatively minor character from the X-Men lore is even more remarkable. But by lifting David Haller from the pages of various X-Men titles into a weird and timeless television reality, show creator Noah Hawley was able to examine topics like mental illness, sexual assault, and the end of the world in a unique way.Often, it chose not to connect the dots, leaving that mutant ability for the viewer to use. In its place, it offered musical numbers, a couple of fantastic dance numbers, and David – as played by Dan Stevens – unraveling at least some of the secrets buried in his head. And it all led to a pivotal figure in X-Men history, Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd), and a somewhat obscure, but vitally important background character, Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban).Spoiler alert: This article includes plot details from the series finale of Legion. Stop here if you have not watched the final episode.Considering Charles and Amahl s fight in the comics led to the formation of the X-Men, it would seem the end of Legion contains a beginning — or maybe it really ended with David destroying the world. Let’s take a look at what the ending has to offer. Negahban was kind enough to talk to Rotten Tomatoes about one of the ways the future could change — well, provided there is a future, of course. Why did Everyone Think David Would Destroy the World?(Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)He s done it before. There is a certain ambiguity in the show’s final shot — or limitless potential as it is a baby s smiling face. But David’s role in bringing about an apocalypse is probably the third line on his Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe page after “Professor X’s son” and “Suffers from a mental illness.” Despite being a presence in the comic books for a number of years, Legion’s big moment came in 1995’s Legion Quest story line. The character – waking from a long coma – made a key decision: he was going to travel back to the 1960s and kill Magneto before he formed his Brotherhood. If successful, then only his father’s non-violent philosophy would hold sway and prevent much of the strife done by Erik Magnus Lehnsherr and his followers.Unfortunately, it all went badly and Legion ended up killing Charles Xavier instead of Magneto, unleashing a reality in which the world learned about Mutants decades too soon and Apocalypse, a powerful, ancient, and immortal mutant took control of the planet. Eventually, a team of familiar faces (led by the time-lost mutant Bishop) managed to travel back in time to prevent David s error.Curiously enough, Bishop was able to show David the damage he caused. The troubled mutant apologized and apparently died. The Age of Apocalypse was undone and things went back to normal. Well, mostly, anyway. Blink, a fan favorite from the AoA timeline, eventually found herself crossing the multiverse with a group known as The Exiles, while Dark Beast, a mad-scientist version of founding X-Man Hank McCoy, and a few other characters found their way to the familiar Earth-616.(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)Legion eventually reappeared (as no one stays dead in comics), but his most famous misadventure was always in Hawley’s mind, and a version of Legion Quest was the direction of the series from the first moment David flashed his wicked smile into camera. As Stevens put it when we talked to him on the set back in March, the show is not directly adapting frame by frame any particular Legion story line. But I hope what we re retaining is the playfulness. Changing reality, if not destroying it, is always an aspect of the playfulness.Did David End the World? In a manner of speaking, yes. As his addition to Lessons in Time Travel indicated, the traveler is annihilated in the attempt to change his or her past. The David, Syd (Rachel Keller), Cary and Kerry Loudermilk (Bill Irwin and Amber Midthunder), and Amahl Farouk of the program’s “present” timeline all ceased to exist, as did anyone left there while the Time Eaters munched away. From their perspectives, David ended the world by traveling 33 years into the past — à la Legion Quest. Now, had a fourth season occurred, it is entirely possible we would’ve seen new versions of these characters grappling with echoes from the world before. Much like the way the omnipresent baseline at David’s cult compound invaded the minds of his parents, an image or song (likely from The Who) might have offered Syd or David some clue to the old timeline – much as Bishop survived in the Age of Apocalypse to form his own strike team. Maybe this is why the mainframe version of Ptonomy (Jeremie Harris) remained in stasis back in the present. But with Chapter 27 serving as the conclusion, we’re left with a blank slate. It is easy to consider what it might look like. We will even be charitable and assume the timeline we witnessed on Legion was a darker world where mutants mostly ran scared and had no unifying groups to help them with their powers. Will Charles Form the X-Men?Almost certainly. Upon his return from Morocco, Charles tells Gabrielle (Stephanie Corneliussen) that he always wanted to be a teacher. The implication is clear. Even their home has a certain X-Mansion flare to it. And that change is key in appreciating the series end-state. In the personal sense, Charles and Stephanie will be there to raise David — and help him cope with the mental health issues he inherited from Gabrielle. But in the larger sense, Charles came away from his journey with a new perspective. As Lloyd noted when we talked to him in March, “[Charles] is actually quite lost when he arrives at the Shadow King s palace. But having returned from a trip that saw him disappear entirely in the old timeline, he is now free to fulfill a destiny he never knew he had.Back in the comics, Professor X’s battle with the Shadow King led him to found the X-Men as a safe-guard against mutants who use their abilities for evil. But in Legion s history, the battle seemingly left Charles dead or utterly incapacitated. Altering this outcome may be more significant than David could imagine. Besides giving Charles the opportunity to be part of the a family unit with Gabrielle and David, he will also be able to teach others how to harness their gifts — no doubt after training David — leading to a very different world.(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/FX)We’re also going to note the total absence of Magneto from Legion’s structure as it means TV show David achieved what comic book Legion sought to accomplish: a world in which Charles made things better.Sure, Division 3 will likely observe the Xavier school, perhaps even come into conflict with a group of X-Men, just as they hunted people at Summerland. Nonetheless, Charles will offer something better than the Birds sought to create. Although, if you ve read an X-Men comic or seen one of the movies, you know the tension between mutant and humans will always lead to fighting and giant robots. But at least Charles s attempts with the school and the X-Men offer people like Syd and the Loudermilks something they may not have otherwise: family from an early age.Who Will the Shadow King Be in the New Future? When we spoke with Negahban recently, his thoughts turned toward the key moment in the finale: a handshake between David and the Shadow King. It evolved on set, but reflected the overall tone of the final moments. That is to say, a non-violent resolution after all the pain and trauma.“[Noah] was addressing how people are struggling to see each other, to understand each other, to find themselves, Negahban explained, adding that some of Amahl s apparent villainy in Chapter 26 may have been an expression of an extreme loneliness. Even in his most evil moments, he is feeling very lonely being the most evil person. But as Negahban saw it, the Shadow King s future self gave him something key — an external awareness of his actions. The way that I looked at it is that we can change the future by paying attention to our present or paying attention to what we are doing, how we are responding to other people, the actor said.(Photo by Matthias Clamer/FX)For Amahl, that change came courtesy of the future Shadow King s stylish glasses and the history they contained: When [he] hands the glasses to Amahl — just by seeing what kind of impact we have on our future, we might change our behavior today. Negahban imagines the Amahl who emerges in the new reality will be less lonely and offer his powers to a life of service.“Sometimes we are becoming so full of ourselves, we are becoming so arrogant that we think that we are controlling everything, that we are controlling the situation,” he said of Amahl up until the events of Chapter 27. I think Amahl sees the effect that he s going to have on the future. And at the end when he is thanking [David, Charles, and his future self] for allowing him to see the outcome of his actions, he is getting a second chance to change. That apology echoes David s back in Age of Apocalypse. And while it is easy to imagine a kinder Amahl Farouk finding peace in a new future, did David also earn a second chance? Was David Deserving of His Redemption? When we visited the set, we asked the cast if David deserved redemption. Midthunder, on the eve of shooting the final episode, still felt conflicted about David. Everybody has a story and everybody has a side, she said. Everybody has reasons for doing what they do, but then everybody has the way that it affects them. Meanwhile, she thought Kerry had a clearer point of view on the matter: he deserved to pay for his actions.Irwin, on the other hand, thought that his service to the world — keeping the world going — is something we can all be grateful to him for even if his actions left him as a dubious sort of hero.Lauren Tsai, whose character, Switch, allowed David the opportunity to change his past, thought the overall story of season 3 created enough ambiguity for viewers to question his redemption long after the finale. I think that throughout the story you can believe that David is redeemable, she said. David deserves love and a normal life. But at the same time you can also feel like, Well, he did these horrible things. (Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)In Switch s case, David s exploitation of her powers led to a beneficial transformation. But David s violation of Syd may be the greatest reason to deny him redemption. Even before he erased her memories of his darkest actions, he was causing her psychic damage. So much of her life since she s met this man has been in service to him, Keller said during our set visit. So many young women go through taking on egotistical and stupid and sick men, trying to right their wrongs or fix them. This seemed to be an involuntary course of action for Syd up until the end. In March, Keller expressed a hope that Syd would be able to leave him in peace. But it seems time travel allowed her something better: the chance to protect a David brimming with potential. The David she knew deserved only oblivion, even if he did fix the world. That baby, though, definitely deserved better. And, hopefully, the end of the world (as Legion viewers knew it) will give him that chance.
