12. Octavia Spencer(Photo by © Neon)Octavia Spencer got her first solo starring role this year with Ma, the psycho-horror flick about a middle-aged woman who becomes creepily obsessed with a group of teens after she helps them get booze from the local liquor shop. And while the film wasn’t exactly splattered with critical acclaim, reviews sang Spencer’s praises as the super-scary “Ma” – comparisons were made to Bette Davis’s Baby Jane – and the movie made decent money at the box office, earning million worldwide off a budget of just million. Spencer proved she could draw crowds. The actor s other big 2019 release, indie drama Luce, did hit with critics: the film about a controversial school paper that leads a teacher to question the nature of an all-star student is Certified Fresh at 93%. Spencer, who plays the movie’s meddling/concerned schoolteacher, gives what many are calling a career-best performance that may put her among the Best Supporting Actress nominees come Oscar night next February.11. Billy Eichner(Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney)Want an impossible task? Try being the standout in a cast that includes Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, and James Earl Jones. Comedian-turned-actor Billy Eichner managed just that this year, stealing the whole damn show – with an assist from Seth Rogen – as Timon the meerkat in Disney’s live-action-OK-fine-it’s-really-just-animation version of The Lion King. Eichner’s ad-libbed hilarity and unique spin on the character had even those who weren’t too hot on the movie singing his praises (and his version of “Hakuna Matata”). It was a good start to the year for Eichner, too: In February, it was announced he will star in and co-write a Judd Apatow-produced rom-com, in which he will play a gay romantic lead.10. Leonardo DiCaprio(Photo by © Columbia Pictures)There were very few things people unanimously agreed upon about Quentin Tarantino’s nostalgic, laconic, violent love letter to 1969 Los Angeles, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; portrayals of Sharon Tate, Bruce Lee, and, well, women in general, left a lot of audiences split. One thing everyone seems to agree on, though, is that Leo has lost absolutely none of his ability to light up our screens – even after four years away from them. His portrayal of fading TV star Rick Dalton is a hot Oscar favorite already, with folks particularly falling for his tender scene with young Julia Butters’ Trudi.9. Lupita Nyong o(Photo by © Universal Pictures)Hail our new scream queen! Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, until 2019 best known for 12 Years A Slave, Queen of Katwe, and Black Panther, reached official horror icon status this year with two swift moves. First, she impressed genre fans at the Sundance Film Festival as a ukulele-strumming schoolteacher in Little Monsters, the Aussie zombie flick in which she gets drenched with blood and sings a soothing rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”; the movie should hit theaters later this year. Then Nyong’o put herself in the Oscar conversation with the dual roles of Adelaide and her murderous doppelgänger “Red” in Jordan Peele’s terrifying and critically acclaimed Us. The movie would make a ton of money when it opened in March and leave half the country doing their best croaky “once…upon…a…time…” Nyong’o impressions.8. Shia LaBeouf(Photo by Nigel Bluck / © Roadside Attractions) Don t let your dreams be dreams! Just do it! Whoever said those words, Shia LaBeouf certainly has taken them to heart, making 2019 the year of a critical darling comeback. Once a bag-on-head puzzle – known for public drunken meltdowns and bizarre social experiments – LaBeouf has found the jelly jam to life: A little Peanut Butter and a lot of Honey to turn his prospects around. The Peanut Butter Falcon, an emphatic and rousing Mark Twain-style adventure, is Certified Fresh at 95% and has a huge Audience Score of 98%. Meanwhile, Honey Boy, based on his deeply vulnerable autobiographical screenplay, has maintained its perfect 100% score since its Sundance debut, and is due for release this November.7. AwkwafinaIf 2018 was the year the world got to know Awkwafina, 2019 has been the year it learned it was not going to forget her anytime soon. It started in January when The Farewell debuted at Sundance to rave reviews, with critics praising the actor’s first lead – and mostly serious – role; the movie would open with the best per-theater-average box office weekend of the year in July, and is slowly becoming the surprise indie hit of 2019. (It’s also 99% Certified Fresh. Not bad!) Her golden run, which includes last year s Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, shows no signs of slowing down: already this year we’ve seen casting announcements for her upcoming roles in Jumanji 2: Welcome to the Jungle, the live-action Little Mermaid remake, Disney s new animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, and for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Yep, the “My Vag” rapper is heading to the MCU.6. Ava DuVernay(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Let’s be honest: every year since she broke through big with 2014’s Selma could be called Ava DuVernay’s year. Since releasing that Oscar-nominated film, she has become the first black woman director to helm a movie that earned over 0 million (A Wrinkle In Time), made the game-changing and acclaimed Netflix documentary 13th, signed up to direct DC’s New Gods, produced acclaimed TV series like Queen Sugar, and, through her production company Array, championed dozens of new voices and filmmakers. And yet 2019 might be her biggest year yet, thanks to When They See Us, her four-part dramatization of the case of the so-called Central Park Five.  DuVernay s acclaimed miniseries follows the arrest, trial, imprisonment, and eventual exoneration of the five young New Yorkers falsely accused of a vicious rape in Central Park, and it has been earning high-praise since landing on Netflix in May; the series is Certified Fresh at 96% and is up for 16 Emmy nominations.5. Neil Gaiman(Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage)As a best-selling novelist, the author of Coraline and Stardust has long “ruled,” but 2019 sees Gaiman in the second season of the TV adaptation of American Gods on Starz – and that’s just to start. His collaboration with the late, beloved novelist Terry Prachett, Good Omens, was developed by BBC Studios and Amazon Studios and released this year, starring Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) and David Tennant (Doctor Who). Like American Gods season 1, the limited series is Certified Fresh. Most recently – and to the delight of longtime Gaiman fans – Netflix announced in July that it is developing a show for graphic novel series The Sandman. “We now have the CGI, we now have the technology, and we now have an adult audience, and we have millions upon millions of people who love Sandman and would love to see it,” the author told Rotten Tomatoes in May.4. Jordan PeeleJordan Peele revealed he was more than just a funny guy when he unleashed 2017 s Get Out on unsuspecting audiences and catapulted straight to the top of everyone s Directors to Watch list. The offbeat social-satire-cum-horror-thriller signaled Peele as a fresh new voice in the genre, and he proved he wasn t a one-trick pony when his follow-up, this year s Us, debuted with a monster million opening weekend and a Certified Fresh 93% on the Tomatometer. He wasn t done there, though. At the end of March, CBS All Access premiered its reboot of seminal sci-fi mystery series The Twilight Zone (Certified Fresh at 74%), with Peele not only hosting the show as a modern-day Rod Serling, but also providing guidance as executive producer. As if all that wasn t enough, he still had time to remind everyone how hilarious he is by reuniting with his Key Peele co-star Keegan-Michael Key to steal multiple scenes in Toy Story 4 as Bunny and Ducky.3. The Russo BrothersAvengers: Endgame. Mic drop. What, you wanted more? You mean it s not enough to juggle dozens of punchy, kicky, laser-blasty superheroes coming from different power sets, perspectives, and dimensions into a cohesive, thrilling whole? To not buckle under the weight of 11 years of growing anticipation, across 21 movies – all Fresh, most Certified, and each a No. 1 box office opener – and not only meet those expectations, but exceed them? And for that to flourish into the highest-grossing movie of all-time? Well, if you needed more, just over a month after Endgame, when the blockbuster buzz was still riding high, Joe and Anthony Russo announced their next project: an animated adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, outing them as the most famous fans of the 26-year-old trading card game. Behind the camera and in career development, the Russos never fail to surprise.2. Phoebe Waller-Bridge(Photo by © Amazon Prime Video)In a year in which 11-time Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her HBO series Veep have returned for awards contention, season 2 of an intimate little streaming comedy, Fleabag, and its creator and star are challenging expectations. The Amazon Prime Video series’ new season sits atop our list of the “Best TV Shows of 2019 (So Far)” with a 100% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score on 78 reviews. Season 1 also has a 100% score, making Fleabag the only series with more than one season and a title-level 100% score backed up by entirely Certified Fresh seasons. Four of Waller-Bridge’s five Emmy nominations are from this year, including for Fleabag, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the season 2 premiere episode. She is also creator and executive producer of 2019 Outstanding Drama Series contender Killing Eve, which was also nominated last year in the category. On top of her TV accomplishments, Waller-Bridge was tapped to work on the Bond 25 script – now known as No Time To Die – and turned in a scene-stealing voice performance as L3-37 in last year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. The star is not just ruling 2019, she’s owning it.1. Keanu Reeves(Photo by Doane Gregory / Netflix)Still, if we have to crown one person as the true ruler of 2019 – so far – the title must undisputedly go to Keanu Reeves. Just how good has 2019 been for Keanu? Let us count the ways. He kicked it off with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which would be the best reviewed of the already acclaimed series and almost double the domestic and international haul of Chapter 2. He followed that with an extended cameo in the Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe on Netflix, and showed he had zero qualms about making fun of his image as the ideal boyfriend (he also delivered a movie entrance for the ages, and one which launched a thousand memes). Next came scene-stealing voice work as the stunt-performer toy Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, and the announcement that he is going to star in The Matrix 4 . He s also been shooting another sequel to Bill and Ted. (He also dazzled attendees of Xbox s E3 briefing with a surprise appearance that revealed him as the star of 2020 video game title Cyberpunk 2077 — and, yes, he was breathtaking.) Between projects he’s also made headlines for just being a stand-up guy. So yes, it’s been the Year of Keanu (and we will never mention 2018 – era of Replicas and Siberia – ever again).Like this? (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. / Courtesy: Everett Collection.)How and when did you decide to jump from acting to directing? Did you always know that was something you wanted to do?When I did Roswell, there weren t female directors. We had 61 episodes and we had one female director on the last episode. I didn t grow up seeing an image of a female director, so I never thought it was something that I could have. I definitely spent my time in editing during Roswell and asked a lot of questions and paid attention, but during my 20s, you just didn t see it.Then when I was on Life Unexpected they brought on a female director, Liz Allen, and it really kind of rocked my world. Through my relationship with her, she was like, You can do this. I started shadowing a lot after I got off Life Unexpected. That s where I was like, OK, this is something that I can do. By the time I did UnREAL, I came to them right away, and I was like, I have done my homework. I am prepared. I would really love an opportunity. I m really grateful to them that in the second season they gave me an episode to direct. I ended up doing four during the course of the series. What has your experience been like directing a show that you re also acting in, versus something like Roswell, New Mexico and Pretty Little Liars where you re not appearing on screen? The difference is that you re not really splitting your focus, but at the same time when you re directing and acting, it s pretty powerful. You know, you re really in it and you can really command the energy of a scene because your acting is putting that out. So, you can really craft how you want it to be.When you re not acting in it, when you re sitting back, you can take a breather and really see the scope of the piece. I think it s incredibly rewarding to work in this space. All this information that I ve learned and all of these tricks of the trade, of crafting an episode of performance and an episode of TV — to be able to push that information forward and share with these young actors and watch their performance blossom, it is so gratifying. It s a way of giving back in some ways, and I am just really relishing it.(Photo by Lewis Jacobs/The CW)It s mentorship from a totally different angle.Absolutely. You know, there are directors that come through your career that really give you these little nuggets that change the way you work. I try to give it as much as I can, because I want to have an impact in the few days that I m with them.Do you think that there will be an opportunity for you to appear on screen in Roswell, New Mexico?Carina MacKenzie — she s so talented — if she wants to figure out a way, I ll do it.Can you share anything else about your upcoming projects? Do you have any on-screen appearances planned?I did an episode of Law Order: SVU and Lucy Liu was directing it. That was really fun. I just did an episode of Drunk History that aired. But, quite honestly, following up Rachel Goldberg on UnREAL, there are big shoes to fill. I m just kind of taking a minute to find the right thing… because I really want to give it my all and find the next right character and the next right story.Roswell, New Mexico episode Songs About Texas airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on The CWLike this? The 140 Essential 2000s MoviesNew millennium, new technology. Film cameras were the standard way to shoot a movie for over a century, and now they to had to make space for upstart digital. Without digital cameras, zombies would ve stayed dead; 28 Days Later was only possible with how quick and easy it is to set up with them. Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Neill Blomkamp (District 9) certainly benefited from the new technology.Movies were also used to absorb our collective trauma. We escaped into magic and wonder in the months after 9/11 with Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, while we celebrated the end of the Great Recession by getting the hell off this planet with Avatar. And speaking of those series, we didn t want their installments taking up all the spots on this list, so one movie representing the whole franchise was chosen for those worthy. And your vast comic-book trivia knowledge became a social asset, not a bullseye for beatings. Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and Spider-Man 2 opened up new ways of connected storytelling (and money making). And it wasn t just superheroes making the leap to the mainstream. Fanboy culture, the internet, and sites like the one you re reading now helped bring genre movies to the cultural forefront: zombies (28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead), sci-fi (Avatar, Serenity), horror (The Descent, Saw), and fantasy (Pan s Labyrinth).Meanwhile, under-served voices started to make some noise in the mainstream with films led by females (Mean Girls, Whale Rider, Bend It Like Beckham, Twilight), made African-American filmmakers (Love Basketball, Barbershop), and featuring Asian-American stars (Harold Kumar Go to White Castle, Better Luck Tomorrow). And that s not including the increasingly easy access to international material like City of God and Let the Right One In.And we still haven t touched upon Pixar s golden age (WALL-E, Finding Nemo), Hollywood finding the formula for comedies perfectly balanced between smart and dumb (The Hangover, The 40-Year Old Virgin), or that the Fast Furious series got its humble beginnings here. A lot happened in this decade: Discover it all with the 140 Essential Movies of the 2000s!More Essential Movies By Decade1970s | 1980s | 1990s

Ghcxuf Endgame vs. the MCU: After three days, the Fifth Biggest MCU Movie – and Coming for the CrownAt 0 million, Avengers: Endgame immediately becomes the 50th highest-grossing domestic film of all-time. That is already more than Aquaman grossed in 105 days. It also took Captain Marvel 24 days to gross what Endgame did in three; and Endgame is now the fifth highest-grossing film in the MCU. In a remarkable bit of solidarity, Captain Marvel moved up to second place at the box office this weekend, dropping just 11% for an eighth-weekend haul of million. That’s the 10th best eighth weekend of all time (up from last week’s 15th best seventh weekend) and the fifth best this for the current century, behind Avatar (.8 million), Frozen (.7 million), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle ( million), and Black Panther (.7 million). And let s get super math-y for a minute. If we were playing the Take Two game from The Price is Right – where you have to pick the cost of two prizes that add up to a specific amount – the only MCU title one could pick to combine with another for a total less than Endgame’s opening weekend is The Incredible Hulk. Take that movie s 4.8 million, match it with Captain America: The First Avenger (6.6 million), Ant-Man (0.2 million), Thor (1.0), or Thor: The Dark World (6.3 million) and you have the only pairings that come up less than Endgame’s 0 million start. Only eight films in the MCU have grossed more in their entire run than Endgame did in three-and-a-third days. There has been no fatigue with the MCU, as frequently as that myth has been told. Endgame had already grossed 5 million outside of the U.S. before even opening here. Through Sunday, Endgame has grossed 9 million internationally (14th all-time) and .2 billion globally (the eighth MCU film to reach that milestone and the fastest ever to pass it). Those numbers make Endgame the 18th highest-grossing film of all time internationally. And it s done that since Thursday.Records on the Horizon: Endgame Sets its Sights on Avatar, The Force Awakens(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Domestically, Avengers: Endgame is now beyond targeting the totals of the two mega-grossing James Cameron films, Avatar and Titanic – because it is going for the big dog. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the highest-grossing film ever domestically, earned 6.7 million here and Endgame is already blowing past all of its early records. Avatar is the all-time world champ with .78 billion – and that s going to be a tough number to beat, even for a film expected to become just the fifth film ever to gross billion worldwide. Other records that Endgame has its eye on for next week include:Biggest 10-Day Gross: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (0 million)Biggest Second Weekend: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (9.2 million)Smallest Drop For A Film Opening To Over 0 million: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (-39.8%)Fifth Highest Worldwide Gross Ever: Jurassic World (.671 billion)It would take a drop of more than 57.4% for Endgame to not break the second-weekend record held by The Force Awakens. Thirteen of the 21 previous MCU films had drops lower than that. We predict that at least two of the records above will fall next week. Though highly unlikely, it would be remarkable if it bests the 39.8% drop of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And if it does, one should expect just about every record to fall after that. This Time Last Year: It All Began With a Record-Breaking First Weekend for Infinity War(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Getting a sense of déjà vu? On this same weekend last year, Avengers: Infinity War grossed 7.6 million, breaking the record for the highest opening weekend ever – a record that lasted officially one year minus a day. Its per-theater-average of ,599 was still second to The Force Awakens, and it would not go on to outgross the all-time champ, nor its Marvel counterpart, Black Panther. That film got a similar boost to what Captain Marvel got this week, dropping just 4% from the previous weekend and finishing in the top five. The rest of the Top 10 grossed a combined .31 million for a grand total of 3.01 million, and the films averaged 59.3% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 7.5 million and averaged 69.5% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Long Shot Set To Top Newcomers, At a Distant SecondJoel MearesIt takes a brave rom-com to go up against a juggernaut, but next week s has the critics on its side. Jonathan Levine’s Long Shot, with Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, is at 84% on the Tomatometer after its SXSW premiere in March. Look for it to lead the newcomers handily. Among those newcomers are STX’s first foray into animation with UglyDolls, based on the line of plush toys. In The Intruder Dennis Quaid pulls a reverse Cold Creek Manor as the previous owner of a home terrorizing the new couple (Michael Ealy and Meagan Good) who have moved in.The Full Top 10: April 26-28Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – 0 million (0 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .05 million (3.58 million total)The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .5 million (.28 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .30 million (.11 million total)Shazam! Anthological true-crime series, reboots of a genre-defining classic, a reality hit starring a bevy of makeover masters, and a DC Comics property getting its due on the small screen are just a few of the seven acclaimed series returning this month. Catch up on all that and more with June 2020’s guide on what’s worth bingeing.    Dirty John 80% (USA Network)What it is: This true-crime anthology series from creator Alexandra Cunningham follows an intense, stranger-than-fiction tale of love gone wrong each season. While the first outing on Bravo from fall 2018 was a screen adaptation of the viral podcast charting the story of Debra Newell and her con artist husband John Meehan, Season 2, titled Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, moves to USA Network to tell the story of Betty Broderick (Amanda Peet), who in 1991 was convicted of murdering her ex-husband Dan (Christian Slater) and his new wife Linda. Why you should watch it: Just like the podcast of its original source material, Dirty John’s first season is the kind of soapy crime drama best enjoyed with your feet up and a glass of wine. Elevating it from tabloid fodder, though, are the performances from Connie Britton as Debra, who was nominated for a Golden Globe, Eric Bana as John, and supporting turns from Juno Temple and Ozark Emmy winner Julia Garner. Season 2 premieres June 2 on USA Network.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)Queer Eye 93% (Netflix)What it is: The early aughts’ boundary-pushing hit reality series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy gets a makeover of its own with this charming, seven-time Emmy-winning reboot on Netflix. Why you should watch it: If any other series captured the world’s collective heart over the last two years like Queer Eye has, we haven’t heard of it. Yes, its main hook lies in the fashionable, fabulous, and heartwarming makeovers the Queer Eye guys give rural American men and women (plus, their half-season trip to Japan), but you’ll stick around for the playful banter and true, deep friendship between the main cast of industry experts. It all packs a surprisingly emotional punch, so stock up on tissues! Season 5 premieres June 5 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 28 hours (for the first four seasons, plus Queer Eye: We re in Japan!)The Chi (Showtime)What it is: You’ve never seen Chicago like this. Created by Master of None Emmy winner and Queen and Slim screenwriter Lena Waithe, this Showtime series portrays the city’s South Side neighborhood as a tapestry of want and need, violence and love, and altogether human when our central heroes (played by Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Jacob Latimore, and Alex R. Hibbert) are brought together in unexpected ways after one life- and community-altering event. Why you should watch it: The Chi is an unflinching and authentic coming-of-age drama boasting some of the best actors and writers — well-known and otherwise — working today. In a time when racial violence still devastates minority communities and permeates our headlines, it offers a timely look at some of the social issues being debated today while still being nuanced, character-driven entertainment. The series went on a hiatus after Mitchell was fired for misconduct allegations, but Season 3 will finally premiere June 21 on Showtime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 20 hours (for the first two seasons)Doom Patrol 97% (HBO Max)What it is: From creator Jeremy Carver and starring Matt Bomer, April Bowlby, Timothy Dalton, Brendan Fraser, Diane Guerrero, and Joivan Wade, this acclaimed DC Comics series follows superpowered outcasts Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane after modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief) brings them together to save the world from one fantastical threat after another. Season 1 aired last year, streaming on DC Universe, but makes the jump to HBO Max as the platform’s inaugural comic book property. Why you should watch it: In the very best way, Carver and his writing room are dedicated to their source materials’ larger-than-life weirdness, violence, and heart and they have a cast that’s down to play along each step of the way. Season 2 premieres June 25 on HBO Max.Where to watch: Amazon, DC Universe, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 12.5 hours (for the first season)Search Party 96% (HBO Max)What it is: Part relationship drama, part coming-of-age comedy, part noir-tinged mystery thriller, Search Party is undefinable — but that’s what makes it so good. It’s the story of Dory (Alia Shawkat), Drew (John Reynolds), Elliot (John Early), and Portia (Meredith Hagner), who, on account of their own self-interest and general aimlessness, entangle themselves in the potentially sinister disappearance of their college classmate. Why you should watch it: Brooklyn-dwelling millennials have been beguiling subjects for many a film and TV auteur since Lena Dunham’s Girls, but never before have they been so exactingly (and excruciatingly) brought to life than in Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers, and Michael Showalter’s incisive satire-crime mystery cocktail. Season 3 premieres June 25 on HBO Max.Where to watch: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first two seasons)The Twilight Zone 66% (CBS All Access)What it is: Did somebody say a reboot of creator Rod Sterling’s eerie and prescient anthological classic from 1959, now hosted and produced by modern master of horror Jordan Peele (an Oscar winner for Get Out and record-breaker for Us)? All we can say is: Sign us up.Why you should watch it: When it comes to horror series that episodically tackle various social and political matters through a sci-fi and technology-driven lens, Netflix’s Black Mirror has been the buzzy new kid on the block for five seasons strong. But there’s still nothing like the taste of a true original, and with Peele at the helm, this Twilight Zone is in more than capable hands. Season 2 of this beloved reboot premieres June 25 on CBS All Access.Where to watch: CBS All Access, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 7.5 hours (for the first season)Adventure Time 100% (HBO Max)What it is: And you thought we were done with the land of Ooo. After delivering an unforgettable season finale in 2018, creator Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time is back for this four-part special on HBO Max, beginning with “BMO.”Why you should watch it: This belovedly off-kilter animated series bursts at the seams with unabashed and untamed surrealist creativity. But at its core, it’s just the story of a 12-old-boy named Finn who goes on adventures with his magical dog named Jake. Binge all 10 seasons of the series in the lead-up to the new specials, the first of which follows our heroic duo’s prescient robot and friend, BMO. ror体育app Hans Zimmer is one of just a handful of working movie music composers who can genuinely be called a household name. And no wonder: German-born Zimmer created the memorable scores for movies like Gladiator, The Dark Knight, and – Bwoaaaah! – Inception. Perhaps most famously, he composed the music for Disney s The Lion King, which was the first animated feature he had worked on (he would go on to compose scores for The Prince of Egypt, Madagascar, and more). Working closely with Lebo M., the South African artist whose voice many will know from the The Lion King s iconic opening chant, Zimmer created music for the Disney classic that terrified us as wildebeest stampeded through a canyon and moved us as a young lion stared at his own reflection and discovered a king staring back at him. It also nabbed him his first, and so far only, Academy Award. Zimmer recently returned to the story of Simba, Mufasa, Nala, and the rest of the Pride Lands characters for Jon Favreau s new take on The Lion King. Here Zimmer reveals what drew him back to the story, why he hesitated at first, and what s changed in the 25 years since the animated film s release.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Someone I saw this movie with turned to me at the beginning and said, If I don t cry during the stampede, it will mean Hans hasn t done his job.” When I saw her at the end, she was bawling. So, I wanted to know how did you approach that particular scene the second time around?Hans Zimmer: Cautiously. If you think that was a dangerous comment, my oldest daughter who I d written the original movie s [music] for in the first place 25 years ago, she was still saying to me, Dad, you better not make a mess of this one. All the themes that I wrote all those years ago – I didn t know how to do animation [at the time] – so all the themes are slightly too epic and slightly too big, and they needed that little bit more space and that little bit more breath to really resonate. I mean, especially the stampede and its aftermath, I can t even put into words, you know, the benefit from having more space. More breathing room. More chance to battle. More chance to focus on the protagonist. More chance to focusing on the story.(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: You said that your daughter said, Don t make of a mess of it. Did you yourself have any personal hesitation about coming back to a project that you haven t worked on for a very long time and that was so beloved – and was kind of perfect already?Zimmer: Well, “kind of perfect,” I never think about things like that. But “loved,” yes. I had a very short conversation with Jon [Favreau], which basically went him saying, Come down, let me show you something. And that was 100 percent committing. I went down. He put me in a black room, showed me [footage of the film’s opening]. It completely and utterly surprised me and moved me, even though I sort of knew what to expect. And we look at it differently than we looked at it 25 years ago. I mean, we truly do. I ve spent now quite a bit of time working with Sir David Attenborough. So partly, I was looking at it from the sense of where s the world heading? It felt like I was on a slightly different mission. It was, even if the story is the same, the world has changed, so the meaning of the story has changed.Rotten Tomatoes: In terms of what was practically involved with producing the score, how did you approach it differently from the first time? Zimmer: In the last 30 years… Usually, I never leave a dark windowless room, but eventually I did, and eventually I got onto a stage, and eventually I – despite stage fright – I started playing things live. And I did Lion King at the Coachella festival, and performing it, and watching the reaction of an audience and performing it, it was like these amazing musicians that I now have access to, made me realize that this isn t a normal film score. We can do this as a performance. In a normal film score, the orchestra or the players never know why they are playing the notes, because they don t know the story. Everybody knew the story [this time]. So I managed to get a commitment that was just extraordinary, and the performance, and I made it all about the performance. I think for a movie that relies that much on technology, there s a sense of improvisation and a sense of performance in this movie, far more than the original one. And a sense of humanity in the story. Everything is slightly paradox, but I think that s what gives it its great strength.(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: And so you performed everything on the score live with an orchestra?Zimmer: Yeah. I mean, I said to Jon and everybody at Disney, Can I do this? Can I try this experiment?” You know, I had 102 people in the room. We re just going to rehearse. We re just really going to get it under our fingers, and then we re just going to go and do the whole movie for a couple of days. And don t worry about wrong notes. Next time around, we ll probably figure it out. It truly was exciting. And that s what I was trying to do, is get the authenticity of really hearing the musicians.Rotten Tomatoes: When you originally wrote the music for the stampede scene, the track To Die For in the original and new score, were you drawing from compositions or scores that you had heard before? What inspired the musical moment there?Zimmer: Not really. I mean, I ll tell you what I did draw from. It s just my childhood memories of listening to Mozart. It s like I was always slightly worried about this idea that as a German, you re sort of pillaging the culture of Africa. So one of the things I did on the first one, and I ve before with Lebo M., it s like I kept saying, I m a German, so I m going to write with a German accent, just the way we re speaking now. And let me go and take this into Africa and give it to Africa, and let them just respond with their culture, and see what happens where the two cultures collide, if another new thing can come out of it. So I think that s really part of the strength of the score.(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Rotten Tomatoes: What was it like to work with Lebo M. again on the score? Had you worked together much in the intervening years?Zimmer: Yes. We had worked on a couple of movies nobody went to see (, and we did touring together. Africa s always been important to this world, and at the same time, it s like it needs more respect. It needs more love. And Lebo s been touring with me, so we have been doing Lion King, bits and pieces of it live. Yes, we ve been comrades in arms for a long time, you know? And he s been sort of the guardian of the musical. Because he s really great at casting this thing. That sort of stuff. He s been looking after our legacy in a much more profound way than I have. So, your daughter: Has she seen the film? Did she say whether you screwed it up?Zimmer: No, but there is something which has puzzled everybody at Disney. They let me have a lot of tickets for the London premiere, and I sent them all back, and I said, I only want two tickets, because I want it to be a father-daughter date.  I hope she s still going to be speaking to me afterwards. Simple as that. But it s just going to be the two of us.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week. The Lion King is in theaters July 19.
