But there are still plenty of series dedicated to werewolves, some with their names in the title — Teen Wolf, for one — and some with other creatures in their names — Buffy the Vampire Slayer (don t forget that Oz was a werewolf). Then again, special effects in television have improved dramatically over the past 20 years (and gotten much cheaper to produce), which means the transitions seen in recent series like The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, and yes, Teen Wolf, look pretty darn impressive compared to the decades before. Still, The Munsters had a werewolf in its cast of spooky creatures — though, like the hybrids on The Originals, he was half vampire too.Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of the best and worst werewolf-related television shows. While the series don t have to solely focus on werewolves to be included, the do have to include significant werewolf characters or storylines (hence the inclusion of so many vampire shows). The series are ranked by Tomatometer score, and shows without series-level scores were omitted — sorry, Bitten!Don t see your top dog here? Tell us about it in the comments.

Gamble stressed that it wasn’t that Lifetime didn’t do right by You, but rather that times and viewer habits were changing in a way that gives streaming platforms a huge amount of influence.“It didn t feel like we were being snubbed, it just felt like we were on a cable network during this strange time where technology shifts how viewers, especially younger ones, consume content,” she said. You’s sophomore season will premiere on Netflix as a newly minted Netflix original (although the first season aired as an original on Netflix outside of the U.S., as is fairly common with international licensing deals). It’s hardly the first time that streaming has given a traditionally televised show a new lease on life, but a show doesn’t need to be saved from cancellation and reborn as a streaming original to enjoy the benefits of streaming.“Netflix gave the first season of The Magicians a big bump, and as a viewer, there are shows I caught up with [on Netflix] a couple of seasons in,” says Gamble, who also is executive producer, co-showrunner, and co-creator with John McNamara for the Syfy series, which recently saw its fourth season Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer (a rare achievement). The series actors report that they notice the bump offline in real life. I noticed we were getting more viewership last year when I would just be walking down the street, because people would start looking at me, and I d be like, OK— Summer Bishil, who plays Margo in the series, told Rotten Tomatoes during a set visit in the fall. I ve been working since I was like 17, and I ve never been recognized or anything like that  But I m like, OK, I ve either become a supermodel overnight, or people are watching The Magicians. Bishil s costar Trevor Einhorn, who plays Josh, said the streaming effect is a strong reflection of the kind of fan who likes The Magicians style of fantasy television:  It s a different age of watching TV, as we all know, and it s not so much about the water-cooler conversation of, Did you watch last night? The power of being able to stream something — whether it s on Syfy.com, or when it comes out on Netflix, or any of the different platforms — it creates this elongated fandom, which I think is great because the momentum doesn t really stop. Netflix calls the bump “The Netflix Effect,” a spokesperson told Rotten Tomatoes. The phenomenon, however, is not exclusive to Netflix, of course. It makes sense that a streaming service could bring new eyeballs to a show, since Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon’s algorithms are very good at showing audiences what they might enjoy (and might’ve missed during its initial airing). Netflix especially is so ubiquitous that it acts as a home page of sorts for many viewers, especially those without traditional TVs or cable. If Netflix prominently suggests a recently licensed show on the landing page, magnitudes more people will see it and consider hitting play compared to normal TV, where viewers need to actively seek out a show to watch it live.Netflix declined to elaborate on how widespread the bump is aside from providing data about You’s landmark success.(Photo by Bravo)Hulu has noticed a similar bump, with a representative from the streamer’s content acquisitions team telling Rotten Tomatoes that they have noticed licensed shows build momentum on Hulu. The representative also identified what they supposed could be called “The Hulu Effect”: Since episodes of many currently airing shows are added to Hulu’s library a day after they first air, Hulu has noted that viewers will use the site as a resource to get caught up while a season is still ongoing. Netflix, meanwhile, only adds completed seasons to its streaming library. With the exception of You, neither Hulu nor Netflix offered specific data about exactly how big any streaming second-life bump was. Netflix in particular is a black box when it comes to releasing viewership numbers, and other industry professionals tend to take the streamer’s vague boasts with a grain of salt. As a rough proxy for this data, though, we can look at the percent increase in page views for a show’s Rotten Tomatoes page during its initial run compared to its streaming release. In most cases, it’s a noticeable increase, suggesting that many more people are looking up a show once it’s streaming. Presumably, more are watching as well.

(Photo by ©Trimark Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)March 17 marks St. Patrick s Day, the global celebration of one of Ireland s most beloved patron saints. In Dublin, they normally go to church to mark the occasion (and then to the pub). In Boston, they dye the river green every year. At Rotten Tomatoes, well, we re taking a different approach – and given many of you are stuck inside, we think you should join us. We re bingeing the Rottenest horror franchise there is!To celebrate the greenest day of the year we re celebrating one of the greenest franchises in Rotten Tomatoes history, and one with an Irish heritage, if not any particularly genuine Irish flavor. The eight-entry Leprechaun franchise might be one of the most splat-worthy franchises in horror movie history, with a huge four entries sitting at 0% on the Tomatometer and not a single entry over 38%. The franchise earns an average of 14.125% on the Tomatometer per movie.Multiple attempts to revise the franchise have done little to help: 2014 reboot Leprechaun: Origins sits at 0% while 2018 s second attempt at a reboot, Leprechaun Returns, only managed to muster 38%.But Rotten scores don t mean these films aren t wicked good fun – particularly if you re washing them down with a pint or two. Thanks largely do a big dose of wit and the incomparable Warwdick Davis, who plays the Leprechaun in most movies, these quirky slasher flicks can be damn fun.Happy St. Pat s Day, and enjoy the pot of gold below: Every Leprechaun movie ranked by Tomatometer, and where to watch it.8. Leprechaun Returns (2018) 50%In this latest attempt to revise the franchise, a group of sorority girls accidentally awakens our limerick-loving killer. The movie is notable for having a certain charm, and for the arrival to the franchise of Linden Porco, who takes over the title role from Warwick Davis. While there’s a lot of charm to be found, it’s also sloppy in its world-building and doesn’t give us anyone to truly root for. It doesn’t feel like anything we haven’t already seen before, either.  Meagan Navarro, Bloody DisgustingRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, or Vudu.7. Leprechaun in the Hood (2000) 33%The addition of Coolio and Ice-T proved the lucky charm that got the franchise to its highest point. It s not a very good film in any way, but it manages to be average, and that alone makes it a franchise standout. Tim Brayton, Antagony EcstasyRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, Prime Video, or Vudu.6. Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003) 20%Ice-T did not return to the hood, leaving a blinged-up Warwick Davis to terrorize Sticky Fingaz, of Onyx, instead. We now live in a world in which there are six Leprechaun movies. Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.comRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, or Vudu.5. Leprechaun (1993) 27%The original, but not the best. Like a certain plucky little monster pursuing his pot of gold, this one has followed star Jennifer Aniston, who made her film debut here, around for decades. The perfect high-concept comedic slasher, and it s still Jennifer Aniston s best film to date. Luke Y. Thompson, New TimesRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, Prime Video, or Vudu.4. Leprechaun 2 (1994) 6%The legend continued, inexplicably, with this first sequel that earned the franchise its first big fat 0%. It s no Leprechaun in the Hood, but then, what is? Ken Hanke, Mountain XpressRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, Prime Video, or Vudu.3. Leprechaun 3 (1995) Still looking for a wife, the Leprechaun hits Sin City. Not a lucky move for the audience. The directness with which this went to video is apparent in nearly every single element. – Tim Brayton, Antagony EcstasyRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, Prime Video, or Vudu.2. Leprechaun: Origins (2014) 0%We can just imagine the pitch meeting: What if we rebooted this thing and took out the one thing that was legitimately awesome about it? Turns out WWE star Dylan Hornswoggle Postle is no Warwick Davis. Davis s performance, his sense of theatricality, and his villainous make-up are deeply missed. Brian Orndorf, blu-ray.comRent or buy on Fandango Now, iTunes, Prime Video, or Vudu.1. Leprechaun 4 in Space (1996) 17%The greenest of the green, this movie just pips past the series reboot to take the title of Worst with an average critic rating of 1.5 out of 10. In space, no one wants to hear you go on about your f ing pot of gold, apparently. This week we learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for releases in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. Paramount is aiming to achieve this goal by hiring writer/director Christopher McQuarrie to work on both sequels, following what he s done on the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%) and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to schedule not just Tom Cruise, but his supporting cast, which may include Fallout co-stars like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. We don t have any indication what Mission: Impossible 7 (2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (2022) might be about, but they will probably feature Tom Cruise doing some of his own crazy stunts. Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020), and he will also be celebrating his 60th birthday on July 3, 2022, possibly around the same time that Mission: Impossible 8 will be released.Fresh Developments1. AN ACTUAL GHOSTBUSTERS 3 IS NOW FAST-TRACKED FOR SUMMER, 2020 (Photo by Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)We ve been seeing year-after-year of reboots and remakes, but only very rarely are they overturned by later films. If you were a big fan of 2016 s Ghostbusters (Certified Fresh at 74%), we have some bad news for you, as Sony is now pulling an about-face. Rather than moving forward with a sequel starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Sony is aiming to produce a Ghostbusters 3 that will extend the continuity that started with the 1984 movie starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson. Ghostbusters 3 will be a legacy sequel, with Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Tully) taking over from his father Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters 3 will reportedly feature the teenage kids of the original Ghostbusters, possibly comprised of two daughters and two sons. We even already got a teaser trailer this week for the sequel, which is aiming for a summer 2020 release. In related news, Bill Murray is now signed to reunite with his Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola for On the Rocks, co-starring Rashida Jones.2. BLACK PANTHER S NOT THE ONLY AFRICAN KING GETTING A SEQUEL: COMING TO AMERICA 2The 1988 blockbuster comedy hit Coming to America was #3 at the box office that year, preceding by three decades the success of another African king in last year s Black Panther. We already know Black Panther is getting a sequel, but now we can count on one for the former as well. Eddie Murphy is signed to return as Akeem Joffer of Zamunda for Coming to America 2, which will be directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle Flow, Black Snake Moan). Murphy and Brewer are coming off their recent collaboration on Netflix s upcoming Rudy Ray Moore biopic, Dolemite is My Name.3. HUNCHBACK (OF NOTRE DAME) GETTING LIVE-ACTION TREATMENTThere are absolutely no signs of Walt Disney Pictures slowing down their live-action adaptations of their classic animated films anytime soon (setting aside whether The Lion King is live action ). In addition to all of the films in development, the next five on Disney s upcoming slate are Dumbo (3/29/2019), Aladdin (5/24/2019), The Lion King (7/19/2019), Mulan (3/27/2020), and Maleficent II (5/29/2020). We can now add Hunchback, an adaptation of 1996 s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, to the mix, as Josh Gad is now producing the remake for Disney. (Gad is a frequent Disney star, including Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen 2.) Gad is not currently expected to star, but that could change with time. Meanwhile, another project, Pinocchio apparently hit a snag over the holidays, with Paddington 2 director Paul King recently walking away (while Guillermo del Toro s Pinocchio is now in development at Netflix).4. SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME TRAILER REVEALS MYSTERIO AND THE ELEMENTALS (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)An all-too-common complaint about trailers is that they reveal too much, with the best ones arguably just whetting our appetite without giving away the whole narrative. This summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) has a very thin line to walk indeed, as its mere existence could be a spoiler for Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019). Let s focus instead on what this trailer actually does show, which is Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio fighting mysterious monsters called The Elementals. In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be acting as a superhero, but many fans were quick to point out that in his first appearance in 1964, Mysterio similarly pretended to be heroic, as he s traditionally one of Spider-Man s longest-running super villains. (Let s note here that 1964 is some 40 years before Syndrome did something similar in 2004 s The Incredibles.) As for the Elementals, three different Easter Eggs in the trailer seem to suggest that they could actually be Spider-Man s villains Hydro-Man, Molten Man, and Sandman (or those could be fakeouts too).5. STEVEN SPIELBERG FINDS HIS WEST SIDE STORY REMAKE S MARIA, ANITA, BERNARDO, AND CHINO Steven Spielberg is getting closer to filming his remake of West Side Story, starring Ansel Elgort as Tony, with the original film s Rita Moreno also cast in a supporting role. What we didn t know until this week, however, was who would be playing the film s female lead, Maria (played by Natalie Wood in 1961), or her best friend Anita (Moreno s original role). Those big reveals came this week as we learned that Maria will be played by 17-year-old Colombian-American newcomer Rachel Zegler. (You can watch Rachel Zegler performing various songs on her YouTube channel right here.) Anita will be played by Ariana DeBose, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for playing Donna Summer. Anita s boyfriend Bernardo will be played by David Alvarez (Tony winner for Billy Elliot: The Musical), and Maria s would-be-fiancee Chino will be played by Andrés Rivera (of the Hamilton national touring company). Spielberg also reportedly met recently with faculty and students at the University of Puerto Rico about their concerns of how their community will be portrayed in this West Side Story update.6. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL LEAD THE WITCHES REMAKE Robert Zemeckis recent adaptation of the documentary Marwencol, called Welcome to Marwen (Rotten at 31%), was both critically panned and a box office bomb. For his next film, Zemeckis is aiming for a more conventionally popular project, with a remake of 1990 s The Witches, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl s 1983 children s novel. Anne Hathaway is now attached to star in The Witches as the Grand High Witch, the role played in 1990 by Anjelica Huston. The 1990 movie was itself a box office bomb, earning just million, but the film has arguably become a family favorite in the 29 years since. Robert Zemeckis new adaptation of Dahl s novel will be set in the Gothic South in the 1960s, with Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump) also writing and producing along with both Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan s Labyrinth) and Alfonso Cuarón (Roma, Gravity).Rotten Ideas3. KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY  (Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart may not be hosting this year s Academy Awards, but his career is otherwise moving along quite nicely following the million opening weekend for The Upside. Within a few days of those numbers being confirmed, Kevin Hart was quickly attached to two different films, including one that s pretty high profile. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds like a drastic switch. Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board. If we disregard his two Kevin Hart concert movies, Tim Story currently has a seven-movie Rotten streak going that includes Fantastic Four (27%), the aforementioned Ride Along (19%), and Ride Along 2 (13%). Kevin Hart s second new project this week is called Fatherhood, based on the Matthew Logelin memoir Two Kisses for Maddy. Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers) will direct the tragic drama, in which Hart will play a newly single father after his high school sweetheart dies in childbirth.2. VIDEO GAME MOVIES STILL ROTTEN, HOLLYWOOD STILL MAKING MOVIES LIKE JUST DANCE (Photo by Alessio Bolzoni/Amazon Studios)We frequently talk about how bad video game-based movies have been over the years; there isn t a single Fresh film among the 47-plus that have been made. That may change this year with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, but even if one of them does earn a Fresh score, it would only be a small dent in the genre s infamous reputation. In the grand Hollywood tradition of doing something over and over again and expecting a different result, we learned about another attempt to bring a video game to the big screen this week, namely the long-running Just Dance franchise. Screen Gems won an auction to the Just Dance rights after competitive bidding. In related news, Warner Bros long-in-development Minecraft movie attracted a new director this week in Peter Sollett, who directed Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist (Certified Fresh at 74%) and 2015 s Freeheld (Rotten at 48%).1. FINAL DESTINATION FRANCHISE BEING BROUGHT BACK FROM THE DEAD (Photo by New Line courtesy Everett Collection)The first Final Destination movie in 2000 earned just a 34% on the Tomatometer, but it inspired a franchise with four more sequels, only one of which scored above 48%. It can be argued that Final Destination, in which the survivors of lethal events are then haunted by death, trying to even the score, was somewhat ahead of its time, given the more recent success of franchises like Insidious and IT. The screenwriting team of Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who worked on Saw IV, Saw V, and Saw VI, have now landed a new gig at New Line Cinema, working on rebooting the Final Destination franchise. Those Saw movies, likewise, have pretty Rotten Tomatometers (18%, 13%, and 39%).

The numbers were also down on streaming and cable, largely due to shutdowns on series like The L Word and Killing Eve.Other findings in the report: more than half of LGBTQ characters on cable TV are people of color; female LGBTQ regular and recurring characters on broadcast primetime outnumber males; almost half of LGBTQ characters on scripted cable outlets are found on FX, Freeform, and Showtime; nearly 20 percent of LGBTQ characters on TV spring from just four show creators and writers, including Ryan Murphy, Lena Waithe, Shonda Rhimes, and Greg Berlanti; and the number of characters living with HIV dropped from nine to three, and all three are on the FX drama Pose.PaleyFest 2021 To Feature a Six Feet Under Reunion(Photo by HBO/Getty Images)PaleyFest will be a virtual event again this spring, and the first events for the 2021 version include a Six Feet Under reunion with creator Alan Ball and cast and panels on ABC’s new drama Big Sky and CBS’s The Late Late Show With James Corden. This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Final Destination 6 and the sequel to Spider-Man: Far from Home. This WEEK S TOP STORYPARASITE DIRECTOR BONG JOON-HO MIGHT DO A MUSICAL NEXT (Photo by Kimberly French/©Netflix)Ever since director Bong Joon-ho s surprising victories for Parasite at the Academy Awards last month, discussions about what he might direct next have been frequent online. It wasn t until this week, however, that we got an idea directly from Bong himself, and the surprising answer is, I would love to make a musical. Bong continued, Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, **** this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ in the Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different. Moving from Parasite to a deconstructed musical wouldn t be the first time Bong Joon-ho has switched genre gears drastically, as his filmography has also included a monster movie (The Host), post-apocalyptic science fiction (Snowpiercer), and most recently before Parasite, an action adventure about a genetically modified pig (Okja).Other Top Headlines1. TOM HOLLAND HINTS HIS THIRD SPIDER-MAN WILL BE ABSOLUTELY INSANE (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)The COVID-19 crisis is obviously causing many film productions to be delayed, but for now, the film industry appears to be sticking to existing plans further out. Tom Holland, for example, is apparently still planning to start filming of his third solo movie as Spider-Man in July. Although we don t yet have an idea of who the villain(s) might be (J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson might be one obvious answer), Holland did describe the third film as absolutely insane, and that Zendaya will be returning as MJ. The movie release schedule is very much still in flux, but Sony Pictures currently has the next Spider-Man scheduled for July 16, 2021.2. PAUL BETTANY JOINS DAVID GORDON GREEN S CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA MOVIE(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although some directors stay rather narrowly within their own personal wheelhouses, others seem quite comfortable with experimenting with a variety of different genres throughout their careers. One example is David Gordon Green, who started with the indie dramas George Washington and All the Real Girls, which then led to the comedies Pineapple Express and Your Highness, and is currently halfway through the horror trilogy of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Halloween Kills (10/16/2020), and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Green will reportedly film Halloween Ends late this year (depending on possible delays), and then move on to an untitled drama about the Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal. Paul Bettany, who later this year will star in the Disney+ series WandaVision, is reportedly now set to star in the project as the company s CEO Alexander Nix. The lead character of Christopher Wylie is still yet to be cast.3. WHAT STEVEN SPIELBERG REALLY WANTS IS FOR VIN DIESEL TO DIRECT (Photo by Universal Pictures)Many successful actors eventually expand into directing their own films, but Vin Diesel is actually a rare example of a movie star who actually directed a feature film before the roles that made him famous. In 1997, Diesel directed the indie drama Strays, which predates Pitch Black by three years and The Iron Giant by two. This week, while promoting Bloodshot (Rotten at 30%), Diesel talked about a recent conversation he had with Steven Spielberg, who reportedly said to Diesel, When I wrote the role for you in Saving Private Ryan, I was obviously employing the actor, but I was also secretly championing the director in you, and you have not directed enough. That is a crime of cinema and you must get back in the directing chair.’ I haven’t directed enough. Vin Diesel didn t give any indication about what sort of movie he might consider directing next.4. JAMIE FOXX TO DIRECT FAITH-BASED DRAMA WHEN WE PRAY (Photo by Warner Bros.)In addition to all of the movies that were recently delayed from release, it s also worth remembering all of the films that were already in release limbo before the coronavirus outbreak even started. Jamie Foxx made his directorial debut with the basketball comedy All-Star Weekend, which was filmed in late 2018, but going into 2020, All-Star Weekend  had not yet secured a distributor in the USA. While the world still waits on his first film, Foxx is now gearing up for his second film as director, which we learned this week will be a faith-based drama called When We Pray. It s unclear if Foxx will also co-star in the film, which will be about two brothers who become pastors at different churches in the same community. The budget of When We Pray is expected to be less than million.5. FINAL DESTINATION 6 DETAILS REVEALED AS ORIGINAL CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY In addition to being St. Patrick s Day, this Tuesday was sort of dominated by news about the COVID-19 crisis, so even the most avid fans of the Final Destination franchise may have not noticed that the original Final Destination (Rotten at 34%) reached its 20th anniversary on that day. It has also been almost nine years since 2011 release of Final Destination 5 (Fresh at 62%), but screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are now developing a sixth Final Destination project. Producer Craig Perry revealed this week that their current plan for the next Final Destination is having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die. Most of the earlier films centered around high school or college students, so it sounds like Final Destination 6 might feature older characters.6. CATS FANS DEMAND TO SEE THE  BUTTHOLE CUT (Photo by Universal Pictures)For a few years now since Justice League (Rotten at 40%) was released in 2017, there has been a #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement asking for Warner Bros. to release the film as it would have been before Joss Whedon filmed reshoots. With that as context, this Tuesday, actor and comedian Seth Rogen live-Tweeted his experience watching Cats while ahem under the influence, at the end of which he retweeted screenwriter Jack Waz, who had himself responded to another Cats-related tweet by Ben Mekler by saying that a VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November [whose] entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats. And this is how ridiculous online movements get started. Within hours, #ReleasetheButtholeCut was trending on Twitter, which led Universal Pictures to respond thusly, Hopefully that will add to the magic and mythical nature of the cinematic treasure. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), Mekler received an email the next morning from an unidentified VFX artist who explained that there were never any buttholes to begin with, but that there were a dozen or so shots where the skin and fur sim was groomed or just folded in a way that really REALLY looked like very furry lady genitals and buttholes by accident, and that artists were charged with painting them out. Mekler then put out an open invitation to people who worked on Cats to DM him their best stories, so we may still get a juicy piece of Cats lore out of this after all.

The industry was holding its breath to see how this weekend’s new theatrical exclusive entries would perform. This weekend was the first time during the pandemic that three new movies were released in over 2,000 theaters without a single streaming entity making them available at home. With COVID-19 cases again on the rise, the weekend was likely going to be a barometer for studios to decide how to manage their fall and holiday releases. We’re not out of the woods yet, but one film did just enough to allow those eyeing delays on their schedules to exhale for a moment.King of the Crop: Free Guy Passes Pandemic Test and Gives Theaters Much-Needed HopeEverything is on notice after The Suicide Squad underperformed last week. If a high-concept, (mostly) family-friendly film like Free Guy that can only be seen in theaters could not pull in a decent number this weekend, just how willing would the folks behind No Time To Die, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Top Gun: Maverick be to gamble on reduced attendance if the COVID-19 numbers kept trending upwards?Hope was struck on Friday morning when the numbers showed that Free Guy, which Disney took on after acquiring Fox but did not make available via Premier Access on Disney+, sold .2 million worth of tickets Thursday night. With those numbers in hand it was time to start predicting the weekend haul. Charting 16 PG-13 films that had previously grossed million-.4 million in Thursday night previews, the average opening gross was .5 million; only three of those films went on to have weekends under million, and, of the five that opened over million, four of them were sequels. So between million and million felt right for Free Guy. Earlier in the week, many felt anything under million would give industry folk pause, but when analysts began downgrading expectations to under million, the film was given a solid cushion to land on. When the numbers came in on Sunday, revealing Free Guy pulled in .4 million for the weekend, it felt like a real triumph.(Photo by 20th Century Studios)That is the seventh-best opening of the pandemic and not just better than The Suicide Squad last week, but actually the best opening for an original film. (The word “original” being used a little loosely here as one can recognize Tron, Wreck-It-Ralph, The Truman Show, and They Live amongst its influences. But, still, unlike Black Widow, F9, A Quiet Place Part II, Jungle Cruise, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Space Jam: A New Legacy, it is neither a sequel, prequel, reboot, nor based on existing IP – like a ride.)It is too soon to call the legs on this one. No film yet that has made less than million in its first 10 days during the pandemic has reached 0 million. Then again, Free Guy is likely to remain no. 1 for a second straight week, remain in the top five for its first full month, and stick around in the top 10 at least until the beginning of October. It will all depend how severe the drops are, which will likely be based on how comfortable everyone continues to be going to theaters.Rotten Returns: The Suicide Squad May Not Finish the Mission (Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures/™ © DC Comics)Whether it s concern over the rise of the Delta variant, the lure of staying home and catching it on HBO Max, or some lack of interest in the latest DCEU movie – despite it being Certified Fresh at 91%, among the best-reviewed movies in that universe – The Suicide Squad continues to underperform. The movie experienced a 70% drop from last weekend and fell to fifth place with .7 million. With just .9 million in its first 10 days, it is trailing what The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It had in the bank at the same time (not to mention that movie scored a .3 million second weekend). Looking at August releases historically, The Suicide Squad is charting a similar-looking path to the 2012 remake of Total Recall, which dropped 68.7% in its second weekend to million and had .1 million. It finished with .8 million. As suggested last week, in normal times without a pandemic and without a day-and-date streaming option, The Suicide Squad would have likely had an opening weekend higher than that even with the most conservative of estimates. With those variables in place it appears it may not even top million total. The Top 10 and Beyond: Jungle Cruise On Track to be Disney s Second Pandemic 0 Million Movie(Photo by courtesy of Disney. © 2021 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)Last week we gave Disney’s Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of making it to 0 million and it is definitely punching. It made million this weekend, giving it million after 17 days; that is a great number in that no film released in July or August to have at least million in that stretch failed to eventually clear 0 million. It would be Disney’s second film with a simultaneous Disney+ Premier Access release, after Black Widow, to reach the milestone. Cruella, which had a similar release and just signed Emma Stone for a sequel, is also the sixth highest-grossing film of the pandemic with over million.Moving over to the new titles of the week. Don’t Breathe 2 s .6 million may have looked good when the best the genre was getting was The Unholy and Separation. But the pandemic has given us a mild stretch with the third Conjuring, The Forever Purge, and Old, in which fans seemed ready to make the genre something of a box office over-performer. Still, Don’t Breathe 2 looks to be more in the Spiral and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions realm, a sequel few people felt they needed, and which could underperform. That .6 million start (aided in part by a “hey, let’s go see it on Friday the 13th contingent) is far less than the original’s triumphant .4 million start in August 2016 on its way to over million. The sequel will be hopeful to end up in the million- million range. The release of the Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect, with Jennifer Hudson, delivered something of a blow to the kind of mid-range films for adults – which could be the big box office story going forward coming out of 2021. The ceiling is not being raised for these films and the .8 million Respect made is more evidence that age groups outside of those typically targeted by studios are taking their time when it comes to a night out at the movies. M. Night Shyamalan’s Old breaking million feels like a legit standout at this point versus all the IP making up the current theatrical cashflow. In the Heights, Wrath of Man, and Nobody all earned between million and million (all better than Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins), and Respect may join them, but how long will studios hold on to these kind of alternatives as theatrical exclusives (Heights notwithstanding) before day-and-date streaming helps them out sooner? On the Vine: Action, Mystery, Thrills, and the Paw PatrolArguably the biggest title opening on a very crowded weekend will be Paw Patrol: The Movie. But with it streaming concurrently on Paramount+, how much of a splash will this really make? (Remember that Paramount moved Clifford the Big Red Dog off the schedule from September due to “Delta concerns” but left this one to take its chances in August.) One thing Paw Patrol has on its side? A 100% Fresh Tomatometer Score, so far. Also streaming while in theaters next week is the Hugh Jackman sci-fi tale, Reminiscence. It will be on HBO Max. That leaves a pair of R-rated thrillers to take a shot at the mid-range crowd. Lionsgate’s The Protégé, from action director Martin Campbell, stars Maggie Q, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson. And then there is David Bruckner’s The Night House, from Searchlight Pictures; the horror film premiered at Sundance in 2020 and currently has a Fresh Tomatometer score of 84%.Full List of Box Office Results: August 13-15, 2021

Disney’s live-action remakes have made collective billions at the box office. Although it’s early, the latest entry, Tim Burton’s dark take on Dumbo, could be the first failure among the recent films. Meanwhile, Harmony Korine s latest film fails to make a Spring Breakers-level splash, and Us and Captain Marvel continue to impress.King of the Crop: Dumbo Leads But Is Still Very Far Behind(Photo by Disney)While Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book and Bill Condon’s Beauty and the Beast made a collective billion-plus worldwide, it was Burton’s Alice In Wonderland that really began the live-action remake trend back in 2010. That film remains Burton’s biggest success, a billion-dollar spring hit that was also the second-biggest opening in Disney’s history at the time. (It is now the 17th.) Though Dumbo was not expected to challenge that 6.1 million start, it was also expected to do a lot better than million this weekend. With a 0 million production budget, Dumbo is clearly counting on the international dollar to save it. Even with optimistic projections domestically, no live-action film opening between -49 million stateside has ever reached 0 million. (Disney’s Wild Hogs came closest with 8 million.)Don’t blame critics on this one, as Dumbo’s 50% score on the Tomatometer is not much lower than Alice in Wonderland’s 51%. But that film was also able to market a very bankable (at the time) Johnny Depp, putting him front and center on every poster. Meanwhile, the trailers for Dumbo almost went out of their way to reveal more of the circus than the film’s high-flying star. We’ll update its progress next week.Rotten Returns: The Beach Bum(Photo by NEON / VICE)Neon had a great little story this year with the documentary Apollo 11. With .65 million in the bank, it is the company’s third-highest-grossing title after I, Tonya ( million) and the documentary Three Identical Strangers (.3 million). Harmony Korine s The Beach Bum (51% on the Tomatometer) is likely to become the fourth-highest-grossing film in its catalog, but the 1,005-theater launch only produced .8 million this weekend. That’s the fourth-worst per-theater average for Neon ahead of just Borg vs. McEnroe, Revenge, and the million Sundance pickup Assassination Nation, which had the studio’s widest launch (1,403 theaters) and opened to just .05 million for a per-theater average of 3. In March 2013, A24 released Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, into 1,104 theaters in its second weekend, where it grossed .85 million on its way to .1 million total. The Top Ten And Beyond: Captain Marvel and Us Continue to Impress(Photo by @ Universal)Last October, Blumhouse released David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which grossed 6 million in its first ten days. Last week, the company released Jordan Peele’s Us, which has now grossed 8 million in its first ten days. Halloween finished its run with just 9.3 million even as it grossed .4 million in its second weekend. However, Us second weekend made .6 million — a smaller drop (52.7 percent) than Michael Myers’ (58.8 percent). Of the 21 films to have grossed between 3-133 million in their first ten days, only six have failed to reach 0 million. Halloween was one of them. Us is forging a path to another incredible milestone, and it has already grossed 4 million worldwide.Captain Marvel maintained its impressive pace with another million this weekend, the 27th-best fourth weekend ever for a wide release. With more than 3 million, it is the 21st best-performing film of all time after 24 days and well on its way to 0 million. Every film to have grossed 0 million in 24 days has reached 0 million, and Captain Marvel’s fourth weekend was higher than six of them (The Dark Knight Rises, Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man 3, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) In other milestone news, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World passed 0 million worldwide this weekend.PureFlix’s abortion film Unplanned made the top five with .1 million, the second-largest opening in the Christian-based company’s history after God’s Not Dead 2. Five Feet Apart continues to enjoy a rather healthy stay in the top five, dropping just another 26.9 percent to .2 million for a running total of nearly million — not bad for a million production. Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral passed million and may just have enough in the tank to surpass Boo! A Madea Halloween to become the second-highest-grossing film of his directorial career. Finally, Bleecker Street expanded its harrowing true-life terrorist drama Hotel Mumbai to 924 theaters, and it grossed .1 millon. Where does that rank among the company’s wide launches in more than 650 theaters?A solid fifth, following Logan Lucky (.6 million, 3,031 theaters), Eye in the Sky (.9 million, 1,029 theaters), Megan Leavey (.8 million, 1,956 theaters) and Unsane (.7 million, 2,023 theaters). Hotel Mumbai (.1 million, 924 theaters) finishes ahead of The Lost City of Z (.8 million, 866 theaters), Beirut (.7 million, 755 theaters), Danny Collins (.4 million, 739 theaters), Pawn Sacrifice ( million, 781 theaters), and Trumbo (1,068, 660 theaters). This Time Last Year: Audiences Were Ready For Player One(Photo by Warner Bros)Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One had the second-highest opening of 2018 to date with .7 million. Tyler Perry’s Acrimony placed second with .1 million. Black Panther passed 0 million, and Isle of Dogs for the second straight week had the top per-theater-average (,839), grossing .9 million in just 165 theaters. The top ten films grossed 5.25 million and averaged 55.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 8.30 million and averaged 58.7% with critics. On the Vine: Shazam! To Lead, But Pet Semetary Could Surprise(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The latest offering from the DC side of the aisle opens with some glorious reviews so far. Shazam has 93% to date on the Tomatometer just three weeks before Avengers: Endgame opens. That’s certainly enough to take the top spot at the box office — and audiences can take it from there. Also blessed with strong early reviews is the new adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. It boasts a 91% thanks to reviews from closing night of SXSW, and with a solid opening weekend could end up becoming the third-highest-grossing King adaptation to date. Finally, STX releases the educational drama The Best of Enemies with Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell, but in fewer than 2,000 screens. The Full Top 10: March 29-31Dumbo (2019) 46% – million ( million total)Us (2019) 93% – .60 million (8.22 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .50 million (3.80 million total)Five Feet Apart (2019) 53% – .25 million (.87 million total)Unplanned (2019) 42% – .11 million (.11 million total)Wonder Park (2019) 34% – .94 million (.88 million total)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .23 million (2.96 million total)Hotel Mumbai (2018) 76% – .16 million (.27 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .70 million (.03 million total)The Beach Bum (2019) 57% – .80 million (.80 million total)

love爱博体育app下载 ng of the West, the Indian-American War, that was a different mindset. And all these people have a certain amount of baggage that they bring.Woodson was the son of a slave, so his vulnerabilities are different than, say, Atticus [in Lovecraft Country]. Atticus came from Chicago, Atticus has always been a free man, and his journey up to that point was that of isolation, even within a majority group. And so he goes to war, he also has to find this video file, so he s an imaginative character. But in Korea, what you see in Korea, that climate was different, that conflict was different. Or coming out of the Vietnam War. So he has all that stuff bagged up too.The cheat sheet is they re people first. First, they re people and they have all their baggage, they have all their circumstances. And then they enter into the war. So how they fight is how they fight, but all that is dependent on where they came from. And it’s contemporary, because everybody has those things — everybody has a father, everybody grew up in some type of community. And that s when it s contemporary. You re just playing the moment without any context around it.(Photo by David Lee/Netflix)Speaking of fathers, your characters also have complicated parental relationships. The relationship between Paul and David in Da 5 Bloods (pictured) and Atticus looking for your missing father in Lovecraft Country are prime examples. As both a parent and a son, do you source from your personal experiences to shape these performances?Majors: Yes, and I continue to. It s right there. The best type of acting is when you don t have to act. You can just say someone else s lines with your experience in it. And so yes. I mean, with David in particular — my father being a military man, my personal relationship with him of mystery, chasing, wondering and some feelings of abandonment — all those things David shares. David shares those steps, and we’re alike in that way. And so I’m pulling directly from my life, and then you take that raw material and you got to say, OK, yes, but we re also in a Spike Lee joint, so let s shift this here, move this here. David s from New Orleans, I m from Texas — let s shift this here. But everything that s inside the character is coming from my personal experience. There are things that you have to pull from. I m not a teacher, I don’t teach Black studies like David did. That s homework. I ll just go get that, you know what I mean? And then when it comes with Atticus, the way he is — that s a different element. And one of the things I do often is to try to think of what s like the ideal situation to be with your father or with your child. And usually the play or the film is not going to give you that, right? And so that s what you re pushing for in the scene. With Montrose [Atticus’ father], Atticus is always trying to get some affection, some approval from him. That s the perfect world for Atticus; that s what he wants. And so I also look at my child and I see that that s what she wants from me. So I m 30 years old now, and I think I ve got my own s going on. I know what I want; I don t need anybody s approval. But the truth is you need your parent s approval at some point in your life. And when you re stuck in that relationship, and that s your primary relationship — father-son, child-parent — that is, to the Nth degree, important.(Photo by Elizabeth Morris/HBO)It seems like you gravitate towards visceral, male familial relationships in your roles as well, such David and Paul in Da 5 Bloods, Mont and Jimmie in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and Atticus and George in Lovecraft Country. What draws you characters like this?Majors: I think, for me, I work from what I know and what I ve experienced. I grew up playing sports; I grew up in the South. For better or for worse it s a very masculine culture, it s a very gendered culture, unfortunately. But I am a son of that, I grew up there, that s where my people come from, and I m proud of that. And so in just living those relationships, the men in my life, I ve bumped up against them a lot, a whole lot. Whether it d be homies that you meet in detention or your classmates or your coaches Now, as a Black man, I do find that in cinema we don t get portrayed fully. Something that Delroy Lindo has been saying a lot is that it’s a corrective; Da 5 Bloods is a corrective to the American-Vietnam War conflict. And so I m not here to teach nothing, but I do want to enlighten folks. You can enlighten a group of people who aren t a part of that group, right? That gives them intelligence, where they say, Oh, OK. This group is not just this. As Mont says, We re not just one thing. And then you enlighten them and then you empower your own group, because you begin to expand the scope of that group s identity. And so I understand it deeply. As I said, I d grown up skinny, a theater nerd, played on the B team for a while, I finally made it to varsity. I understand the ins and outs of it. And I think [these relationships are] quite romantic. When I say romantic, I mean Roman in that way, that fraternal love that men have for each other without any pejorative ideas placed on it. Men are capable of great affection with each other. They re capable of great aggression towards each other. And I think when you show both of those, you enhance the entire human experience.(Photo by Stammtisch.604)Community is important now more than ever. You’re an alumni of Yale School of Drama along with Black actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Brain Tyree Henry, Winston Duke, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, and many more. How have those relationships helped you navigate your career?Majors: Each actor is individual. And that community I mean, you kind of spread out of home. There s a phrase or a passage that says, A prophet that has no dignity in his hometown. You got to get the f out of school and you enter into the world. And so I found myself to be more akin and more on the shoulders of Courtney B. Vance, who plays George [in Lovecraft Country], or Angela Bassett, the work of August Wilson, the pedagogy of Lloyd Richards.I think the cool part about it is that we re all in the game now. And that s for the world to talk about, where the Black Yalie is, what an actor from Yale is. But I think we re all clearly individual, and have very different approaches to the work. Again, like the characters, we all come from different backgrounds, but there is a shared DNA as we all spent three years in New Haven. They’re all like siblings of mine. Like, you already checked to see what they re doing because you re doing your own thing. But it means a lot, though, because we all don t live together now. We actually have spread out. I m in Santa Fe, Yahya s wherever he is, being somewhere else, being someplace else. We re all over the world, all over the country. So [it’s a] long web. Because regardless of what your experience was at the school, et cetera, you re connected. So that community does happen. And the people looking up, it s like, Oh, wow. If I want to be an actor If I want to be a young Black actor, as I did, you look to see where the guys went. And so it s a privilege to continue the lineage of Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett, we can keep going. But it s a privilege. It is best that we stay separate in order to continue to build out our community. We have fun together, whatever party we get to go to, whatever reunion there is.(Photo by Lorey Sebastian /© Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Is there any role that you wanted but didn’t get?Majors: In drama school there s a play, Coriolanus, the Shakespeare play, and I was in the class to play Coriolanus, allegedly. And it didn t land on me, and it broke my heart because I was like, Oh, I got this, sure. I got this, sure. But my first year in the profession I got very, very, very close to playing a role in Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow’s film. And I had flown out — I was shooting When We Rise; it was my first show ever and I had flown down to LA. I was in San Francisco; I d flown down to LA, and I did a table read with Bigelow.I mean, I love the cast who s there, [but] it seemed as if I had the role It was me. I had to fly back — I was still in school at the time — I d fly back to New Haven to graduate. And the day before I graduated, I got a phone call from my agent saying, “We don t know what happened, but they re going to go in a different direction.”And I was completely just destroyed. I mean, it was great. It was Kathryn Bigelow, I was doing a TV show, it was like a huge feature. I then went off to do Hostiles [pictured above], which I don t regret at all. But, yeah, that was a kick in the gut.Lovecraft Country premieres on Sunday, August 16 at 9 p.m. on HBO
