The wait for a Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser seemed like one of the longest in the still-uncertain fall and winter 2021 movie season. The film itself was delayed a couple of times due to the pandemic, and for a moment, it seemed as though Sony might decide to change its release date as it did with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Thankfully, No Way Home is sticking with its December 17 release, and the studio finally offered fans a glimpse of the movie on Monday night. Since it will like be the next big chapter in the Marvel Multiverse story, we re taking a deeper look into the trailer to see what we can glean about both those cosmic implications of the film and the personal story of the title character. As always, we are aware that trailers sometimes omit key characters, jumble up scenes and dialogue, and attempt to obfuscate the plot of the film. At the same time, it s fun to dig into these big trailers for clues, so let s get started.Spider-Man: Threat And Menace(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Seemingly, the film will open with Peter (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) trying to flee the fallout of J. Jonah Jameson’s (J.K. Simmons) proclamation about Spider-Man’s identity at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. At least, we’re assuming Jameson isn’t buying all the Time Square billboards for weeks on end. Also, the shots of Spidey and MJ near the subway entrance, swinging across town, and getting surrounded by helicopters feel like they’re happening immediately after the Far From Home stinger.Nevertheless, some time will have passed, as the couple are seen on a roof discussing the latest tabloid theories about Peter. The shots of Peter, MJ, and Ned (Jacob Batalon) returning to school (and the subsequent shots of the Halloween lights) also imply Peter’s problems will drag on well into the school year even if the police and the Department of Damage Control (the DODC agent also appears to also wear a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo at 0:29) cannot hold him. But as Peter mentions, he, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and Ned will be under constant surveillance and scrutiny from the various agencies looking to prove Peter killed Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).Even if he doesn’t have to lie to MJ anymore, it’s clear the weight of this will be too much for Peter to deal with, and his support system of Aunt May and friends will not be enough to help him through it. Instead of giving up on being Spider-Man, though, he does have at least one other option.Enter Doctor Strange(Photo by Matt Kennedy/©2021 CTMG)In a frozen Sanctum Sanctorum – which is either happening because Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong) never fixed the roof or because of a joke we haven’t seen in full – Peter asks Strange for help. Removing Mysterio’s knowledge of Peter’s identity seems simple enough, but the trailer implies it s bad idea, as Wong straight-up tells Strange not to cast the spell. Not that we re entirely convinced this is the spell Wong’s referring to in the full scene Remember the iced over Sanctum? Wong may just be worried about that. Then again, tampering with time is something Wong tends frown on. Also, Strange’s wink to Peter indicates he is being admonished for even suggesting he can change the past. We imagine Strange, for his part, is feeling pretty cocky again after saving half the universe. That attitude got him into so much trouble before and, really, being overconfident is the man’s chief flaw. Also, where is Wong headed with all that luggage? Is he relocating to Kamar-Taj on a permanent basis? Have some of the other Sanctums been rebuilt? Come to think of it, there are a number of unknowns from the first Doctor Strange film which could end up being addressed here as the subsequent shots of Peter and Strange falling through reality – and Strange giving Peter the out-of-body whammy – means he’ll be around for a good portion of the film. It’s not like Peter can re-balance the Multiverse on his own right? The Nature Of The Multiverse(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)One thing the trailer doesn’t do is offer any clarity on the issues raised by the Loki television series. Well, sure, Strange mentions the Multiverse by name, but it is quite unclear if he has any idea about the old state of play He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) held in check. One theory of the Loki finale suggests the loss of He Who Remains is retroactive and the Sacred Timeline never actually existed from the point of view of characters like Strange. So that limited knowledge about the Multiverse s nature may be even more limited than he suspects.Which, really, makes tampering in the timeline a really bad idea. You’d think Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) debriefed Strange on what the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) told him about tangent timelines. Then again, in a Multiverse where the Sacred Timeline never existed, that rooftop discussion in Avengers: Endgame might have occurred very differently. And while we’re talking about the movies occurring differently than they did, the nature of Strange’s spell threatens to completely upend Peter’s life. If no one knows he’s Spider-Man, that means Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) never recruited him, he never received the upgraded suits and, possibly, Tony never learned the empathy necessary to have a child or volunteer to end Thanos. But perhaps we’re overthinking this, and, instead, the spell just backfires, unleashing more problems and more people who know Peter is Spider-Man.The Sinister Three?(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)The trailer gives us three villainous images to ponder for the next few months. First, there’s the yellow lightning at 2:13 in the trailer. It could be more Multiversal chaos, but it could also be Electro (Jamie Foxx). Sure, his electricity was blue in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but yellow was Electro’s classic color back in the comics. Is it possible, this isn t the same Electro from the Amazing series and, instead, the MCU version of the character? Will we see Foxx in the classic mask?Next, there’s the Green Goblin s not-quite-pumpkin bomb and his familiar cackle at 2:28. Then, finally, Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) appears at 2:41, confirming not only his presence in the film despite Molina doing that himself months ago but also that he fully recognizes Peter for who he really is. So, at least as far as the Multiversal characters go, Peter’s original wish to be unknown will be unfulfilled. All of these teasing moments suggest half of a Sinister Six ready and able to end Spider-Man, particularly this Spider-Man. Will the others appear to help him out? That remains to be seen. That said, there may yet be at least one more villain lurking in the shadows 2:26 in the trailer. It may be Doc Ock’s extra limbs, but it could also be made of sand or even an alien symbiote.Black Suit Confirmed(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Not that this is connected to our musing about a symbiote in the darkness, but Peter is clearly wearing a black Spidey suit at 1:15-1:18 of the trailer. The existence of the suit was spoiled by early toy line product images, but to see it in the trailer leaves one wondering why Peter would choose to wear it. He’s also seen in the more “classic” MCU suit and the Iron Spider suit from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Perhaps it’s just another variation of costume in his arsenal, or, maybe, it is a symptom of the problem Strange suggested is caused by Peter’s attempts to be two people. Will the suit just change to black because the Multiverse is breaking down around him?Spider-Man No More?(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Because of the complicated Spider-Man movie rights shared between Sony and Marvel, No Way Home represents Peter’s last solo adventure in the MCU for now. He is meant to make at least one more appearance in either an Avengers 5 or some other hero s film. But considering the dichotomy Strange refers to in the trailer, is it possible No Way Home will end with Peter no longer being Spider-Man? It may be the only way for him to restore peace and quiet to his loved ones. And it would explain why he’s rarely around when universe-shattering events force the MCU heroes to assemble. Perhaps Holland’s last MCU appearance will see a de-powered Peter helping out in a different way.Or, maybe, Peter will have to seek refuge in another universe…Spider-Man: No Way Home opens in theaters on December 17, 2021.On an Apple device? Eddie Murphy’s Coming 2 America Is Coming to Amazon(Photo by Paramount Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Eddie Murphy’s much-anticipated Coming to America sequel, Coming 2 America, was scheduled to hit movie theaters in December. But, like so many other movie projects this year, like Aaron Sorkin’s Trial of the Chicago 7, which just debuted on Netflix after an abandoned theatrical release, streaming is riding in to save the day for viewers.Variety reports that, with movie theater business yet to rebound during the pandemic, Paramount has made a deal to release the sequel on Amazon instead. It will premiere on Amazon on Dec. 18.Coming 2 America finds Murphy’s Prince Akeem, who married his American love Lisa (Shari Headley) in the original 1988 comedy classic, set to become the new king of his native Zamunda just as he finds out he has a son he knew nothing about in America. With his father (James Earl Jones) hoping that the grandson will be made a prince, Akeem returns to America to unite with his son.Arsenio Hall also returns in the sequel, as Akeem’s best friend, Semmi, as does John Amos as Lisa’s father Cleo. Also in the cast: Jermaine Fowler, Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Garcelle Beauvais, Rock Ross, Louie Anderson, and Tracy Morgan. Joshua Jackson: There’s a New Dr. Death at Peacock(Photo by David M. Benett/Dave Benett/Getty Images for Dunhill)Jamie Dornan is out of the title role in Peacock’s upcoming podcast-inspired drama Dr. Death, and The Affair/Dawson’s Creek/Fringe/Little Fires Everywhere alum Joshua Jackson has signed on as the new series lead.Based on the podcast of the same name, the series is the fact-based story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a well-respected young member of the Dallas medical community as a neurosurgeon. But just as his career really began to take off, his patients, ones going into the operating room for fairly routine procedures, began leaving permanently harmed … or worse. Two fellow surgeons – to be played by Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater – began to suspect Duntsch of some very sick behavior, and set out to stop him from continuing to perform surgeries. Unfortunately, they found out that the patients who needed this protection might be the last ones to get it.Dornan had to drop out of the project because of pandemic-related rescheduling, as did Stephen Frears, who was set to direct the first two episodes. Maggie Kiley (Dirty John and Riverdale) will replace him, meaning there will be an all-female directing lineup for the limited series.NEW TRAILERS: HBO Unleashes His Dark Materials Season 2 First LookThe next installment of HBO s adaptation of Philip Pullman s acclaimed fantasy novel trilogy premieres November 16, 2020. Season 2 of His Dark Materials begins after Lord Asriel has opened a bridge to a new world, and, distraught over the death of her best friend, Lyra (Dafne Keen) follows Asriel into the unknown. Season 2 series regulars include Keen, Ruth Wilson, Amir Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, Andrew Scott, Will Keen, Ruta Gedmintas and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The bad streak for horror continues, as nobody came out for Brahms: The Boy II. STX withheld the movie from critics and got themselves 5,000 in Thursday night previews, which was a bit more than the 0,000 that The Lazarus Effect made back in 2015. Only, that film went on to gross .2 million that weekend and Brahms’ .9 million is much closer to Pride Prejudice and Zombies (.32 million) which had 0,000 in previews. When reviews started to trickle in on Friday, The Boy II was resting at 0% for much of the day, before it managed to get out of the single digits and currently sits at 11%. That is still in the territory of films like Rings (8%), Slender Man (7%), and the 2017 Flatliners remake (4%). Even the film’s light million budget isn t going to be recouped. The Top 10 And Beyond: The Call of the Wild Isn t Looking GoodThe Call of the Wild may actually be looking at more rotten returns than Brahms, but let’s at least start with a few positives. The new adaptation of Jack London’s classic novel with Harrison Ford opened to .8 million, higher than the -20 million projected for it. Among CGI dog movies, the number is not exactly Scooby-Doo (.15 million) or Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (.43 million), but it is still a higher opening than Eight Below (.18 million), which went on to gross over million when it opened in February of 2006. (Those numbers with inflation would be about .83 and 4.43 million today.) The problem is that The Call of the Wild’s budget has been reported as anywhere from 5-150 million. That is not far away from Dolittle, which began with .84 million and is up to million domestically and 4 million worldwide. Even if we split the difference on those budget numbers, The Call of the Wild is going to need to go north of 0 million to break even, and it s only made 10% of that worldwide in its opening weekend. This may not be Dark Phoenix bad, but it could still end up as one of the biggest losers in the long history of Fox not a great way to launch 20th Century Studios.Birds of Prey dropped another 59% this weekend to million, bringing its total up to .5 million. Last year’s Alita had less than Birds with .2 million but had a higher third weekend with .22 million. It finished with .7 million. That suggests Birds will finish somewhere between -92 million domestically. As of this weekend, after just another million overseas, it has grossed 3 million worldwide. It will need over 0 million just to break even.Sony’s Bad Boys for Life earned another .8 million, bringing its total up to 1.1 million after 38 days of release. That places it right in the middle of a group of films that includes World War Z, SPECTRE, The Mummy Returns, and Superman Returns, among others. What do they all have in common? Each got over the 0 million mark; Bad Boys’ global total is over 0 million. Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level also continues to go strong, bringing its domestic total to 1 million and worldwide total to 7 million, while Fantasy Island  under the Blumhouse banner dropped 66% and is up over million. The films that were battling it out for Best Picture remain in the Top Ten, with Parasite drawing in another .2 million and bringing its total to nearly million, officially the fifth-highest grossing film not in the English language. It is less than million away from passing Hero for fourth place. Sam Mendes’ 1917 is also rising up a very specific chart, ranking up there with the highest-grossing films about war. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper remains the chart-topper, while the next three films on the list are about the same war – Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor and Dunkirk. Now in fifth place with almost 2 million, 1917 can boast it is the highest-grossing film ever about WWI. That’s good news for Universal, still staring down the losses of Cats and Dolittle, and they can add The Photograph to that list, as it dropped a whopping 77% in its second weekend down to .8 million. With a total under million, that is not going to be near enough to recoup its million budget.Focus’ new remake of Jane Austen’s Emma. (87%) did not exactly break any records this week, but it can brag about having the current best per-theater-average of the young year. In five theaters this weekend, the film starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role grossed 0,000 for a ,000 PTA. Amazon’s Seberg (38%), which was pushed back from its original December release, grossed ,487 in three theaters, giving it the second best PTA of the year. In 357 theaters, Impractical Jokers: The Movie (57%) just missed the top ten, grossing .60 million, a PTA just behind Oscilloscope’s CatVideoFest2020, which grossed 0,150 in 30 theaters. Magnolia’s Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band (77%) had the third best PTA of the week with ,500 in four theaters. Neon’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire (98%) expanded to 130 theaters and grossed 5,000. Its total stands at .45 million.

Jon and I saw The Jungle Book story as a coming-of-age story and the second movie continues in that direction, Marks says. Ghcxuf This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Polly Pocket and Disney s Snow White and Tower of Terror. This WEEK S TOP STORYOPTIMUS PRIME TO RETURN IN TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)By the time Michael Bay finally finished directing Transformers movies in 2017 with Transformers: The Last Knight (Rotten at 15%), he had given us five of them, although none of them scored as high on the Tomatometer as the first installment  still Rotten at 58%  a decade earlier. The franchise fared much better with the 1987-set prequel Bumblebee (Certified Fresh at 90%), so it perhaps shouldn t be surprising that the next step will be another prequel that moves the story into the 1990s. Paramount Pictures announced in a virtual event this week that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (6/24/2022) will focus on both Optimus Prime (again voiced by Peter Cullen) in New York City in 1994 as we re introduced to animal-centric Transformers like Air-Razor (a bird), Rhinox (a rhinocerous), and Optimus Primal (a gorilla), the leader of the Maximals, as well as the monstrous Terrorcons and the villainous Predacons. Speaking about the move towards characters from the Beast Wars franchise, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said, We had somewhat exhausted, I would say, the battle between Decepticons and Autobots. It s also worth noting that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (6/24/2022) is scheduled for release just two weeks after Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), so there will be a lot of dinosaurs and robot monsters stomping around next summer.Other Top Headlines1. STEVEN SPIELBERG S WEST SIDE STORY STAR IS ALSO THE NEW SNOW WHITE (Photo by ©20th Century Studios)Walt Disney Pictures just keeps chugging along with their live-action remakes of their classic animated features, with last month s Cruella (Fresh at 74%) being the latest such film. Even with so many movies already released, there are still a few biggies that haven t been remade yet, and that includes the very first Walt Disney feature film, 1937 s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Certified Fresh at 98%). That will soon change, however, as Walt Disney Pictures has officially announced that their new Snow White will be played by Rachel Zegler, who will soon be starring in another remake as Maria in Steven Spielberg s West Side Story (12/20/2021). The new Snow White will be directed by Marc Webb, who is probably still best known for directing the two Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield (Certified Fresh at 72% and Rotten at 51%, respectively). This new Snow White will also feature new songs written by Benj Pasak and Justin Paul, who previously worked on both La La Land and The Greatest Showman, as well as the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen.2. NEVER SAY NEVER: STEVEN SPIELBERG SIGNS PRODUCTION DEAL WITH NETFLIX (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection) Never say never is a saying for a reason. If we turn the clock back just over two years ago to early 2019, we can find lots of articles like this one about the war of words that was going on between Steven Spielberg and Netflix, whose films Spielberg felt should not be considered for Academy Awards if they didn t follow the pre-existing rules about theatrical runs (instead suggesting Netflix movies should be eligible for Emmy Awards). A lot has changed since then, of course, including the moves of most major studios into the streaming market, like Warner Bros. releasing most of its 2021 slate day-and-date on HBO Max. In a move that had some wondering if Hell Freezes Over? , Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners has made a deal with Netflix to produce at least two movies a year for the streaming outlet. Although Spielberg is indeed the executive producer of Amblin Partners films, it s important to note that most of their films these days are not directed by Spielberg  himself (and there s also a wide margin of difference between what a producer and an executive producer does). It s also important to note that the Amblin/Netflix deal will exist side-by-side with the pre-existing deal that Amblin will continue with Universal Pictures, Spielberg s longtime studio. Of course, we sort of knew something like this might happen someday once Netflix picked up the rights to Amblin s The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Certified Fresh at 89%).3. OLIVIA WILDE AND TOBEY MAGUIRE JOIN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Director Damien Chazelle is coming off an impressive streak of three films in a row that were all very well received, including multiple Academy Award nominations (and a few wins): Whiplash (Certified Fresh at 94%), La La Land (Certified Fresh at  91%), and the moon landing drama First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%). For his next film, Chazelle is turning the clock back again to look at the Golden Age of Hollywood of the late 1920s as the silent film era gave way to the talkies. Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt have been attached to star in Babylon for some time now, but this week, the cast expanded a bit more. Olivia Wilde, Tobey Maguire, and director Spike Jonze have all joined the still-expanding ensemble of Babylon, which most recently was described as The Great Gatsby on steroids. Other stars we can expect to see in Babylon include Jovan Adepo, Diego Calva, Flea, Lukas Haas, Li Jun Li, Max Minghella, Eric Roberts, Katherine Waterston, and Samara Weaving. Paramount Pictures will first release Babylon in select cities on December 25, 2022, and then expand it wide on January 6, 2023.4. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT JOAQUIN PHOENIX S NEW MOVIE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just before the COVID-19 pandemic dismantled the majority of the 2020 theatrical box office, Joaquin Phoenix scored his biggest box office hit ever with the super villain origin movie Joker (Fresh at 68%), which earned over .07 billion worldwide (and an Academy Award for Best Actor, to boot). For now, Phoenix is keeping his next few post-Joker projects relatively indie and low-budget, choosing instead to work with acclaimed directors. Let s start with this week s newest project, which is something called Polaris that will team him up with Rooney Mara and reunite him with his You Were Never Really Here (Certified Fresh at 89%) director Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Callar Certified Fresh at 84%, We Need to Talk About Kevin Certified Fresh at 75%). That s all we know about Polaris, except that we can probably presume this will not be an adaptation of Marvel s green-haired mutant character (though wouldn t that be awesome). Another Joaquin Phoenix project that was already announced before this week is Disappointment Blvd for director Ari Aster (Midsommar), which is described as an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. This week, Amy Ryan and Broadway stars Nathan Lane and Patti Lupone all joined Phoenix in the film, which might suggest it has something to do with Broadway, or maybe that s just a red herring.5. THIS WEEK IN SUPERHERO COSTUMES: THE FLASH AND SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by David F. Sandberg)Although Marvel Studios does have over a dozen upcoming MCU films in some stage of production or post-production, many of their most imminent films use pre-existing costumes, or they have already been revealed during the last year or two (partly because COVID-19 caused a longer than usual delay before their releases, such as with Eternals). Right now, DC Comics has both The Flash (11/4/2022) and the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) in production, and this week, in something of a one-two-three punch, we got three different new costume reveals from both films. The biggest reveal comes from The Flash, as set photos show Sasha Calle in her costume (without a cape, which might be inserted with CGI) as the new Supergirl. We also got to see Michael Keaton for the first time in The Flash as well, but it s just him as Bruce Wayne, so it s literally just Michael Keaton in a regular suit. Also, thanks to set photos leaked online, we have an idea of what Helen Mirren will look like as the villain Hespera in the Shazam! sequel, and finally, all of the new Shazam! Family costumes have been updated for the sequel as well.6. SCARLETT JOHANSSON PRODUCING DISNEY S TOWER OF TERROR (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)Walt Disney Pictures is truly a massive umbrella under which there are many different parallel production lines, including Marvel Studios, all the various Star Wars projects, their live-action remakes of classic animated films, the 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures subsidiaries, their own animated features, and Pixar (and we re probably forgetting a few brands, at that). One theme that Disney doesn t use as often, but has given them at least one major franchise in Pirates of the Caribbean, is their ongoing effort to adapt their popular theme park attractions into feature films, with the next example being this summer s Jungle Cruise (7/30/2021). We can now add Tower of Terror to the list, as Disney s Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson is producing the project for Disney, with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley currently working on a screenplay adaptation. The curious thing about Disney making a Tower of Terror movie that could potentially become its own franchise is that the original ride started as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and the Disneyland ride was later retrofitted to become a Guardians of the Galaxy ride. This Tower of Terror movie ostensibly won t have anything to do with either of those franchises.7. LENA DUNHAM TO DIRECT POLLY POCKET MOVIE (Photo by Bloomberg/Getty Images)The Mattel toy company has been trying to make a live-action Barbie since at least as far back as 2009, including stages when people like Diablo Cody, Amy Schumer, and Patty Jenkins were in some way associated with the project; right now, it s Margot Robbie who s attached to it. We bring up the lingering struggles to make a Barbie movie happen because one way to interpret this week s news is that Mattel might be doubling down on another girl toy brand. Lena Dunham (HBO s Girls) recently wrapped production of a medieval adventure called Catherine, Called Birdy, and she s now attached to write and direct a live-action film based on the Polly Pocket toy line. Lily Collins is also already signed to star in the MGM project as the titular character, a pocket-sized woman who befriends a young girl (yet to be cast). 😈😈

As we gear up for the epic conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Mark Ellis sat down with The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams and the cast of the new film to talk legacies, Carrie Fisher, trilogy highlights, and – of course – Baby Yoda. It was the day after the stars had seen the film for the very first time, and their enthusiasm for what they d witnessed was palpable. Here, Abrams discusses what he hopes his trilogy has given fans; Keri Russell salutes Abrams and dishes on what it s like to act behind an iconic Star Wars helmet; and Daisy Ridley pays tribute to Carrie Fisher, a pop culture pioneer. Plus, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Naomi Ackie, Joonas Suotamo, and Anthony Daniels reflect on their favorite moments from their time in the Star Wars universe.

亚博体彩下载软件 The series also features Native American actor Tantoo Cardinal as Sue Lynn Blackbird, a power broker and manager of a casino near Portland. The character appeared in Dex’s first comic book case, but received a major expansion for the television series.“It has been a part of my madness that this society has really misconstrued ideas of who we are. We’re kind of an enigma, you know. Some people are kind of surprised that we’re still alive,” Cardinal told television reporters in August. “I was kind of astounded, actually, to get the script, and to see this character, and to see who she is. And I think it’s really exciting for us and for the viewers to see a whole different idea of who we are, and closer to the truth of who we are today.”The expansion of Sue Lynn Blackbird — and Hoffman’s appearance as a man – will be the first of several notable changes readers of Stumptown will spot immediately when watching the first episode. Another: TV Dex is just beginning her journey to becoming a P.I., whereas in the book, she’s established a firm long before the first published story. To Rucka, giving her that journey made sense for television: “[Audiences] want to see how she is going to evolve and change. I think in so doing, you create those greater investments on the part of the audience, but also you can create something that allows your lead [actor] to continue to be engaged and passionate.”(Photo by ABC/Mitch Haaseth)And while Stumptown was born of more episodic television like The Rockford Files, Rucka suggested an element of serialization – beyond Dex learning to be a P.I. – may filter into the show. That serialization may present itself in the secrets both Johnson and Richman referred to in August.“You’ll find with all the characters in the show, that what we’re building are very complex people,” Rucka said. “Often [they are] hiding secrets from each other … sometimes from themselves even.”He also noted a shared tragedy between Dex and Sue Lynn will continue to inform their relationship: “She may find herself on opposite sides of something that Dex is working on, or they may need each other in certain instances. And there’s always this complicated past at play.”Beyond the ways characters evolve and change on modern television — and how it relates back to the TV P.I . — Rucka also noted one of the key secrets in adapting a comic book to TV: A 100-page comic gives you roughly one-half hour of TV drama if directly translated to the screen.“Comics do not go one for one,” he said. “You can t do it, and trying to do it insults both mediums and that s disrespectful.“When you bring a comic book audience to these adaptations, there are certain expectations,” he continued. “There are things people are going to want to see or going to want to see referenced because that s part of the comment, right?”To Rucka, it’s the emotional beats that are worth preserving because “[they] are easy to replicate” and they are the moments fans really want to see. It is this element he felt the show really honed in on and replicated for television.“You sit down and you read the comic, it s going to look recognizably like the TV show. That s an enormous honor and almost an unexpected one. There was no reason to actually expect that kind of parity,” he added.Stumptown premieres on Wednesday, September 25 at 10/9C on ABC. Like this?
