What Men Want (2019) 41% Generally speaking, romantic comedies are so formulaic that it usually takes something really out of the ordinary to stand out. Back in 2001, Nancy Meyers achieved great box office success less so with critics with the high-concept comedy What Women Want, which explored what would happen if an egocentric man were suddenly gifted with the ability to read the minds of women. That movie also benefited from a talented cast that included Helent Hunt, Marisa Tomei, Alan Alda, and a pre-controversy Mel Gibson. Fast forward to 2019, and we now have a gender-swapped version of the tale starring Taraji P. Henson as a female sports agent who, suddenly able to read men s thoughts, uses her newfound power to rise in her career and learn a few lessons about the opposite sex. Critics so far have responded to What Men Want about the same as they did to the original film, saying that its leads and lighthearted story are l

皇冠体育真人Four famous friends Jim Brown, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Cassius Clay met for one magical night in Miami, and the film that fictionalizes the legendary evening might garner an Oscar-winning performance. Leslie Odom Jr. and Aldis Hodge as Best Supporting Actor contenders are both compelling choices in the conversation, but we are giving the edge to Hamilton star who closes out the film with a stirring rendition of Sam Cooke s A Change Gon Come. With one of the best lines of the film and an exclamation point of a closing number, Odom rises above the already impeccable ensemble. Of the four, he s the one we see making it to Oscar night, and as of today, he s our pick to win it all. With pointed commentary on the politics of art and the burden of being young, Black, and gifted, One Night in Miami, its cast, and many players below the line are already on the top of just about every 2021 predictions list, but Odom is the only performance consistently pegged for end-of-year awards. Adding in the recent release of Hamilton on Disney+ over the summer, the man who originated and won a Tony for playing the role of Aaron Burr may indeed find himself giving acceptance speeches again soon. This is not to say we are counting Hodge out completely. Hodge percolated around the Best Actor conversation last year as the title character in Brian Banks, but the film s lackluster reception kept him outside the conversation; it s possible he could squeak in this year, but for now, our money is on the man playing Sam Cooke.Chadwick Boseman

Originally released in Japan last July, Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (2019) 44% — now streaming on Netflix — finally gives English-speaking audiences a chance to enjoy the fun. Here s a quick look at what it is and why it was done. What It Is: The new film, the 22nd installment in the film series, remakes the original released two decades ago, Pokémon: The First Movie (1999) 16%. The franchise has since expanded enormously in film, TV, comic books, video games, and toys.Synopsis of the Original Film: The adventure explodes into action with the debut of Mewtwo, a bio-engineered Pokemon created from the DNA of Mew, the rarest of all Pokemon. Determined to prove its superiority, Mewtwo lures Ash, Pikachu and others into a Pokemon match like none before.Mewtwo vs. Mew. Super-clones vs. Pokemon. It s the ultimate showdown with the very future of the world at stake! Why It Was Remade: Because animation has come so far, that telling a beloved story with fun, new tools double-dips into the story s earning potential. It allows kids of the Netflix generation (that is, kids who ve never known a world without streaming) a chance to discover the characters in a format using the high-production quality they ve come to expect. What Critics Said Then: Pokémon: The First Movie is a dose of extremely low-budget Japanimation that — were it only more proficiently executed — would rival Scooby Doo as the most astounding work of art in the 20th century. – Paul Tatara, CNN.comDoes the New Film Improve on the Original? Yes. While the story remains the same, the technical upgrade makes for a more immersive experience. What Critics Say Now: It doesn t reinvent the wheel, but Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution looks phenomenal thanks to its updated visuals, and the action-packed and epic battles help make this the perfect Pokémon movie for fans. – Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comHave a look at the top-to-bottom overhaul:Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution is now streaming on Netflix.

(Photo by SAEED ADYANI/NETFLIX © 2020)Certified Fresh is a sponsored partnership with Rotten Tomatoes and Netflix that includes a series of interviews with the showrunners and creatives behind some of the streamer’s Freshest hits – all conducted by Tomatometer-approved critics. The first season of Dead to Me was so deliciously twisty and compulsively bingeable that many feared a second season couldn’t possibly keep up the pace or the quality. But when new episodes of the Netflix smash arrived last May, all fears were set aside: With new mysteries, a handful of rich new characters, and the incredible Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini once again in career-best form, Dead to Me had only gotten better. The critics took notice, lauding the series and its stars and driving the season to Certified Fresh status on the Tomatometer; a killer finale has left fans eagerly anticipating a third and final season, due to drop on Netflix sometime next year.Talking to Salon.com TV critic Melanie McFarland, Dead to Me showrunner and executive producer Liz Feldman says the bulk of the series’ appeal comes down to Applegate and Cardellini. “These two actresses are so incredible and they embody these characters so humanely and authentically and sensitively – I think that’s what an audience connects to,” Feldman said. “I really give pretty much all the credit to those ladies because they’re just so insanely watchable.”Of course, those epic twists also make Dead to Me “insanely watchable,” along with its dark comedy. In her extended conversation with McFarland, Feldman talks about her approach to mixing deep grief with big, unexpected laughs; the story behind one of the biggest OMG moments of season 2; and how real-life events have impacted the direction of the series.Watch the full interview above or at Netflix’s FYSEE TV site.Dead to Me is now streaming on Netflix.
1997 Special Edition. The music and the muppet-ness of the original band give a certain authenticity even as it remains one of the cheesiest things in the Original Trilogy.31. Tarkin Takes Credit for Krennic’s Work – Rogue OneOrson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is a wonderful view into the way the Empire truly operated. Dogged and relentless, he proves the Death Star s main weapon will work after years of delays only to see Grand Moff Tarkin (a CGI Peter Cushing) assume command and take the credit. His composure melts as he screams about “my work” to an unimpressed gaggle of moffs and generals. It might be Mendelson’s talent for playing officious middle managers, but Krennic became one of our favorite Imps in this moment.30. Bail Organa Gets Involved – Revenge of the SithFrom his appearance in Attack of the Clones, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smitts) is a nameless anomaly in a film comprised of awkward introductions. But he makes his mark in RotS by investigating a fire at the Jedi Temple. In doing so, he becomes a leading figure in the Rebellion and the adoptive father of one of its most important heroes. His actions prove to be quietly heroic, but have far reaching effects.29. Leia Strangles Jabba the Hutt – Return of the Jedi(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Among the chaos Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) sowed to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt, he left dealing with the gangster to the capable hands of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). In using the very chain Jabba employed to make her his pet, she made a statement at least one member of Jabba’s retinue understood before the end. Never shy to make statements, it is one of Leia’s most impressive and direct scenes of action in the Original Trilogy.28. Han Fails To Fool The Empire – Star WarsThough known for his swagger, Han’s dopiness keeps him from being an insufferable character. And this may be the greatest example of his dopiness getting the best of him. Thanks to his time in the Imperial Army, he should know the proper procedure to keep the Imps at bay during the jailbreak, but the ruse collapses thanks to a hasty “how are you?” It’s funny, character-revealing, and a great way to ratchet up the tension.27. Leia Senses Luke Is In Trouble – The Empire Strikes BackWhile it is clear Lucas decided to make them siblings after Empire was released, it is almost impossible to read this late moment in the film as anything but foreshadowing of Luke and Leia’s true relationship. If you can see it another way, it reveals Leia as someone who may not be Force-sensitive, but attuned enough to receive Luke’s telepathic call. Or, as it now text, she is also strong in the Force, but untrained. In any of these readings, it is a powerful moment for Leia with a nice slice of comedy at the end thanks to Lando Calrissian’s (Billy Dee Williams) reaction to her orders.26. Palpatine vs Yoda – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The better of the Prequel Trilogy’s two Yoda battles, this one derives its power from actor Ian McDiarmid going full cackling Republic serial villain. He has the high ground and relishes it with each laugh and each Force-push of a delegate conveyance. The symbolism of Palpatine smashing the Senate might be a little too on the nose, but he’s not worried about subtlety here. He’s won, which also makes Yoda’s retreat surprisingly poignant and their fight all the more important.25. “We Would Be Honored If You Would Join Us.” – The Empire Strikes BackIn a film stuffed with reversals, Darth Vader’s (voiced by James Earl Jones) dinner date with Leia, Han, and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) is one of the best. Lando’s duplicity is revealed. Boba Fett proves Han cannot escape his grasp. And in their only direct confrontation, Han learns he’s definitely no match for a Sith Lord. It’s quick, it’s punctuated by blaster fire and Chewie’s growls, and it’s just a great scene.24. R2-D2 Reactivates The Hyperdrive – The Empire Strikes BackThroughout most of the saga, astromech droid R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) has had plenty of chances to save his humanoid friends. Without him, the Naboo delegation would never have made it to Tatooine. But this may be his most heroic action because of the stakes involved and C-3PO s (Anthony Daniels) nagging about his leg. Without R2 reconnecting one cable, the history of the galaxy might be very different.23. Luke Finds Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s Remains – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The most gruesome scene in Star Wars overall is also one of its most pivotal. According to the principles of screenwriting, Luke has refused the call to action. He needs a powerful motivator to accept the call and go on his adventure. In this case, it is the sight of his uncle and aunt’s charred remains among the blasted ruins of their homestead. It is a shocking moment worthy of its unsettling imagery. Short of a bloody arm a few minutes later, Star Wars films would never do something this graphic again.22. Rey Pulls The Lightsaber Through The Air – The Force AwakensIn a film filled with fan wish-fulfillment, this may be most fans’ fondest – to reach out with the Force, pull a lightsaber through the air, activate it, and hold their own against a Sith Lord. Yes, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) may not be a true Sith – and Rey (Daisy Ridley) is no Jedi here – but that’s beside the point. This is a moment every Star Wars fan has played out in their backyard, schoolyard, or imagination, and it suddenly lives inside a Star Wars movie.21. Boba Fett’s Entrance – The Empire Strikes Back“No disintegrations.” With this directive from Vader, bounty hunter Boba Fett became Star Wars’s greatest man of mystery. Surrounded by intriguing bounty hunters like IG-88, Bossk, and Zuckuss, Fett stood out – and not just because he was an early release Empire action figure. His response, “As you wish,” suggests disintegrations have been a problem in the past, or something Vader specifically hired Fett to do previously. Either way, it gave Fett a mystique so powerful, it rivals Vader’s.20. Vader Promotes Piett To Admiral – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Many fan theories online suggest Admiral Ozzel (Michael Sheard) was revealed as an Alliance spy as a way to explain his gross negligence in the search for Luke. But whether an enemy saboteur or a grossly incompetent Imp who peter-principled his way to the admiralty, his death is both hilarious and disturbing thanks to the reaction of his junior officer, Captain Piett (Kenneth Colley), who Vader immediately elevates to command the fleet. We like to imagine Piett spent his entire career waiting for his superiors to anger Vader so he could accept these quick promotions. Call it the Piett Principle.19. Vader Attempts To Board The Tantive IV – Rogue OneVader as Jason Voorhies. A late addition to the film during its infamous reshoots, Vader’s attempt to secure the Death Star plans from the Rebels as they raced to the blockade runner Tantive IV is the best example of what the Sith Lord looked like to rank-and-file members of the Alliance. He’s a horror movie slasher with a laser sword and magic powers. But most importantly, he’s unstoppable. Consequently, it is one of the most effective scenes in the film despite the lack of the entire main cast.18. Obi-Wan’s Debut – Star WarsFirst, he convinces the Tusken Raiders that a Krayt Dragon is nearby. Then he attends to the unconscious Luke. When R2-D2 comes out of the shadows to investigate, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) removes his hood and offers a warm, bemused “Well, hello there.” With each expansion of the character’s past, this moment – and the following scene with Luke – takes on more meaning, but these three words offer so much of the character: his wisdom, his playfulness, and the prototype image of a Jedi we use to this day.17. Vader Force-Chokes General Motti – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While Obi-Wan made the Force sound amazing a few scenes earlier, Vader gave it its visceral power with this moment. As Lucas would later claim, this is Vader’s lowest point. He is below Tarkin in the Imperial power structure and faces a gaggle of disbelieving generals like Motti (Richard LeParmentier), who mocks the Sith Lord’s “sad devotion” to the Force with every muscle in his face. Vader chokes him from afar and the soundtrack offers a haunting rumble. And in that moment, every kid wanted to wield the power of the Force.16. Lando’s Introduction – The Empire Strikes BackFeigning anger at the arrival of the Millennium Falcon in Cloud City proves a key thing about Lando Calrissian: he is a shrewd sabacc player. It makes Han feel at home and sets up Lando s later betrayal when Vader reveals himself to the rebels. But it also reveals Lando’s playful side. More than any other character in the Original Trilogy, he wants to have fun. Even if he has to sell out a friend, he will find a way enjoy it. Well, at least until the deal is altered.15. Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul – The Phantom MenaceAs the first glimpse of Jedi and Sith in a live-action duel, this was one of The Phantom Menace’s defining sequences. Maul (Ray Park) meets his match in Ewan McGregor s Padawan, who uses his anger to counter the Sith Lord. But Maul is ultimately unprepared for Obi-Wan’s awareness of the environment around him – the “Living Force” Qui-Gonn wanted him to be mindful of at the start of the film. Between the great choreography and the story point, it proves to be one of the best fights in the whole series.14. Luke Brushes Dust Off His Robe – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)For all the might the Force gives a Jedi, there was always the suspicion a true master could defeat his enemy with just a few gestures. This is that moment for Master Jedi Luke Skywalker. The boy who sought swashbuckling adventure was always destined for the sort of composure and interior strength required for this sickest of burns. It puts his opponent off his footing and allows the Resistance to escape – the real victory to be found in this confrontation.13. “Judge Me By My Size, Will You?” – The Empire Strikes BackYoda’s view of the Force was proof there was more to it than lifting rocks. But it would take this dramatic moment, in which the Jedi Master raises Luke’s X-Wing from the muck, to prove the energy field binding the universe defies all underlying perceptions about reality. A hyperdrive-capable snub fighter is no heavier than a pebble to one truly allied with the Force. That this lesson is offered by one of Star Wars’s smallest characters gives this line of thinking its exclamation point.12. “This Is How Liberty Dies To Thunderous Applause” – Revenge of the SithPalpatine’s first public appearance as Emperor is filled with strange moments. He looks like bleached hamburger. He calls out the Jedi as would-be usurpers. He announces the Republic will be “reorganized” into the First Galactic Empire in lieu of a complete change in the government. And he promises a more “secure society.” Despite the odd framing and phrasing, it is a genuinely chilling moment punctuated by Padme’s comment: a warning of just how easily republics can fall.11. “It s Time to Let Old Things Die” – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)While Kylo’s speech to Rey could still be a dodge about her true parentage, his repudiation of the Jedi and the Sith in that moment speaks to anyone who sees the absolutism of those philosophies as the root of the galaxy’s problems. Sure, the Jedi are generally in the right, but they did nothing to alleviate slavery in the Outer Rim. And that surely contributed to Anakin Skywalker’s (Hayden Christensen) fall as much as any of his own actions. Outside of the film, it is also a call to the future of Star Wars – provided they stick the landing with The Rise of Skywalker.10. Luke And the Emperor’s Verbal Sparring Session – Return of the JediLuke’s “Your overconfidence is your weakness,” immediately followed by Palpatine’s “Your faith in your friends is yours” may not only be the best exchange in Episode VI, it may also be the key to understanding the difference between the Sith and, well, everyone else. Evil in the Star Wars galaxy is about being uniform even though it proves to be the very reason the Sith and the Empire fall. A sense of fellowship, meanwhile, allows the Alliance to thrive. Luke and Emperor become the embodiment of these philosophies and it is ultimately Anakin who must choose between them.9. Leia Saves Their Skins – Star WarsPresuming her to be a damsel in distress, Luke quickly learns Leia just needs a blaster and a window of opportunity to save herself. Oh, and she helps out these dopes who barged into the Death Star detention block. And much to Han’s dismay, she takes immediate control of a situation he thought was his. It may have led to the garbage smasher, but it was still a successful strategy. Also, her quick wit and quick thinking prove why she will always be our princess.8. The Alliance Attacks Scarif – Rogue One(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)The concluding fight above Scarif is, without a doubt, the best space-fight realized in a live-action Star Wars project thus far. Taking all of the techniques learned since 1977, it brings us back to that general look, but ups the ante with colliding Star Destroyers, callbacks to both Red and Gold Leaders, and a cameo by key Star Wars Rebels spaceship the Ghost. All the while, terrific photography and editing give it an exceptional verisimilitude. In many ways, it is the battle kids who grew up with Star Wars have been dreaming about since the 1980s.7. Palpatine Tempts Anakin In the Opera Hall – Revenge of the SithThe most accomplished scene in the film centers on Sheev Palpatine tempting Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) with the power to save Padme (Natalie Portman) and teasing the audience with the answer to Anakin’s parentage. Told as a parable on the dangers of Sith power, McDiarmid is at his subtlest – even if Sheev is a cartoon villain – as he relishes a well-written speech. It is also here that we finally see the seductive allure of the Dark Side Yoda eventually warned Luke about.6. The Trench Run – Star WarsA triumph of model work, editing, score, and scripting, the original Star Wars trench run is the battle scene from which nearly all other Star Wars space fights derive. Itself inspired by battles in World War II movies (and footage from the conflict itself), the sequence also proved Luke was a more accomplished pilot than his father. Although, viewers just wouldn’t know it for twenty years.5. “You were my brother, Anakin! I Loved You.” – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While the long-awaited duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan fails to be one of the great fights, its immediate aftermath may be the most emotionally resonant moment in the whole Prequel Trilogy. Obi-Wan watches, heartbroken, as Anakin succumbs completely to the Dark Side. Slding toward a lava flow, the tortured Anakin shouts “I hate you!” And just before the heat sets Anakin aflame, Obi-Wan reminds him of their bond. In a literal sea of CGI lava, it is the most human moment to be found in the first three episodes.4. “I Know.” – The Empire Strikes BackHarrison Ford’s well known skepticism of Star Wars dialogue gave rise to Han’s best moment of swagger. Facing the carbonite freezer, he breaks away for one last kiss with Leia. She finally admits her love to him and instead of telling her to remember that (as scripted), Ford uttered the swagger-filled “I know” during one take. It impressed director Irvin Kershner and cemented Han’s cool factor for generations.  It also gets a worthy callback when Leia says it to Han in the next film.3. The First Jump To Light Speed – Star WarsAs an early critic of the film noted, Star Wars brought speed to science fiction. Previously, spaceships lumbered slowly across the screen, but here they darted at impossible speeds. Thankfully, the Industrial Light Magic geniuses were able to visualize this sense of velocity with one of the greatest visual effects in all of cinema; it propels the viewer as much as it takes the Falcon to hyperspace and became the only way for the rest of us to imagine lightspeed.2. The Mos Eisley Cantina – Star WarsFor as much as Star Wars is about the Hero’s Journey and the creation of a modern mythology, it is also about exotic creatures. Before Lucas realized he could sell that imagery to kids in the form of action figures, he and the talents at ILM worked long and hard to sell this first major reveal of aliens from a thousand worlds. Backed by composer John Williams’ now-classic Cantina Band song, it offered viewers their first glimpse into a larger world.1. “No, I am your father.” – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Not just the best Star Wars moment overall, but one of the great twists in all of cinema. The entire Skywalker saga revolves around this moment in which Vader tells Luke the truth about his paternity. And Luke responds in the exact way we would: an ugly cry. In terms of classical screenwriting, it is the protagonist confronting his lowest point. But the emotion involved – including the sense of betrayal involved – speaks to people at a genetic level. It is the single greatest Star Wars moment for a reason and we doubt it will ever be topped.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

When you re a kid, every movie is a transporting experience, like peeking in a keyhole to some new reality beyond. You feel the fun, the joy, the wonder. And sometimes the shattering terror. The monsters you had imagined creeping the corners of your mind or darkened bedrooms prowled in full horror on the screen. The awful, awe-inspiring power of witnessing something frightening can reverberate for decades. So in the spirit of Halloween, we asked 12 Tomatometer-approved critics to tell us about the movie scenes they watched as children that scarred them for life. Here are their answers. What movie scenes scared the s t out of you as a kid? Tell us in the comments. Stranger in the House (1974) 71%(Photo by Warner Bros.)The scene: The killer gives our final girl the evil eyeThe scare: The climactic scare in this groundbreaking slasher is really the culmination of a series of scares that assault the senses, beginning with the panicky moment when the police call college student Jess to reveal that the shrieking, barely human obscene phone calls to her sorority house have been COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE! Then, there’s her nerve-wracking decision to employ “horror victim logic” and venture upstairs to check on her sleeping (read: dead) friends rather than heading out the front door. And when she enters the bedroom to find her deceased sorority sisters, the sight of the killer’s rabid, maniacal eyeball peering through the crack in the door as he whispers to her “Don’t you tell what we did!” is the stuff of nightmares. This was one of the first horror movies that drew me into the genre as a kid and made me appreciate the power of fright, and after seeing it, I understood why people would want to dream of a white Christmas. Mark H. Harris, BlackHorrorMovies.comE.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) 98%(Photo by Universal)The scene: E.T. is dyingThe scare: Easily the most horrific visual I ve had seared into my brain involves E.T. when he s sick. He s scary enough as-is, and once his skin turns papery white and blotchy, he looks like a diseased liver stretched over a child-sized nightmare. I ll take Sadako, It, or Chucky over E.T. any day, yikes. Li Lai, Mediaversity ReviewsThe Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) 44%(Photo by Screen Gems/courtesy Everett Collection)The scene: In the barnThe scare: I was 11 when The Exorcism of Emily Rose was released in September 2005. I remember a friend of mine talking about it, mentioning how she had seen it in theaters that weekend. My exposure to the horror genre was pretty much non-existent at that point, so perhaps Emily Rose was the first of the genre I had ever seen. Needless to say, it ruined my life. Now scared of sleeping in the darkness of my own bedroom, I slept on the floor of my mom s. This lasted for quite some time, maybe a year, which resulted in me having to see a therapist. The scene that scarred me the most is definitely the barn scene. I remember it vividly. Emily, possessed, is growling, screaming in tongues, flailing her arms, and looking upon Father Moore with blackened eyes. Father Moore is commanding the demon inside Emily to say its name, but there isn t just one demon: there are six. We are the ones who dwell within, they say, as they begin to state their names, with actress Jennifer Carpenter using a different tone and language for each: Cain, Nero, Judas, Legion, Belial, and Lucifer. When she says Lucifer, it s particularly frightening, as a faint light flickers in her eyes. The eyes of an animal peering at you through the dark. Sara Clements, @mildredsfierceGhostbusters (1984) 97%(Photo by Columbia Pictures)The scene: Quiet in the libraryThe scare: Ghostbusters might be a definitive comedy classic, but the ghostly librarian is the stuff of nightmares. At least it was for me as a child. The dark, maze-like rows of bookshelves and eerie quiet was atmospheric enough. Even more so when the books and index cards moved on their own accord. But there was no mentally preparing for the ghastly wrath of the librarian. I screamed along with Peter, Ray, and Egon. Still to this day, I’m petrified to make even a peep when stepping foot inside a library. Meagan Navarro, @HauntedMegThe Great Mouse Detective (1986) 80%(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)The scene: Fidget kidnaps OliviaThe scare: An animated Sherlock Holmes-esque detective story starring a mouse is not something that instantly screams “horror.” But The Great Mouse Detective knows how to build a mystery and a tense atmosphere, culminating in the terrifying scene where tiny little Olivia (also a mouse) finds herself drawn to a toy baby crib. As ominous yet playful music builds up to a big reveal, Olivia approaches the crib and pulls on the cover to reveal an evil and scary bat that takes her for a hostage just as the music changes to resemble the screeches from the shower scene from Psycho. Rafael Motamayor, @rafaelmotamayorJaws (1975) 98%(Photo by Universal)The scene: The head in the boatThe scare: The day I saw Jaws on VHS in my dad s basement, I had spent the previous week convincing myself I would be terrified. All the stories from its theatrical run talked about audiences fainting, and I was sure I would freak out. Well, the self-hypnotism worked: When Hooper goes underwater and the head pokes out from the bite in the boat, I remember practically vomiting in fear. For a month afterwards I was terrified of any water, even my morning shower. I was convinced the shark would come out of the spout to attack me! Summer vacations in the East Coast of Canada where I learned to swim had the same murky salt water as Amity Island, and I d look out convinced I d see the dorsal coming my way. Jason Gorber, @filmfest_caA Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988) 52%(Photo by New Line Cinema/courtesy Everett Collection)The scene: Joey s aquatic demiseThe scare: My first experience with the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise was flipping through channels on TV and landing upon this scene. I was too young to watch a Nightmare film but also old enough to be fascinated by the mystique and terror surrounding them. Watching Freddy manipulate Joey and then burst through the bed had an indelible effect on me. It was my first experience with a horror movie and the terror it elicited was the foundation upon which my love of the genre was built. 1 2 Freddy s coming for you Jonathan Barkan, @JonathanBarkanThe Others (2001) 83%(Photo by Dimension Films/Courtesy Everett Collection)The scene: The face behind the veilThe scare: The scene where Grace (Nicole Kidman) interrupts her daughter Anne playing with toys while her head is obscured by a veil, only for Grace to then see a withered elderly face staring back at her from beneath the sheet, left me traumatized for nights afterward. I didn t look at curtains or any kind of hanging fabric in the same way for a while after that. The mixture of youthful innocence with the complete opposite end of the human life cycle was such an unsettling union for me and it still is. Lewis Knight, @ThatsOurLewisPet Sematary (1989) 51%(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The scene: A tendon momentThe scare: Pet Sematary confronts death and explores grief in ways I just wasn t used to given my identity in a culture that isn t necessarily afraid of it. But while there are many scenes that make that film an annual rewatch for me, the Achilles tendon scene is in fact THE scene that affected me the most as a child. Hiding under the bed, a reanimated Gage slices Jud s Achilles tendon as he approaches. You can see the deep wound and Jud s ankle split in detail as he falls. That one scene made me long -ump to the bed for months. And after rewatches, it still makes me shiver as I get ready to go to sleep. Kate Sanchez, @ohmymithrandirPoltergeist (1982) 86%(Photo by MGM/courtesy Everett Collection)The scene: Suburban invasionsThe scare: The Freeling family always reminded me a bit of my own – the suburban surroundings, the copious amounts of Star Wars toys that littered their home – and that made Poltergeist, despite all of the supernatural shenanigans, all too real for me. When that tree attacks Bobby, or when the skeletons emerge from their pool, as a young man, I felt like any of that could happen to me. Just the mere mention of the film’s title was enough to send shivers down my spine until I was a teenager. To this day, if I have it on too late at night, I have second thoughts about heading down to the basement. Mike Vanderbilt, Daily GrindhouseReturn to Oz (1985) 54%(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)The scene: A hallway of headsThe scare: The unofficial sequel to MGM’s Wizard of Oz, Walter Murch’s Return is a far cry from the brightly-colored 1939 musical. Not only does it have a much darker and fantastical narrative, this scene perfectly encapsulates why the film is the stuff of nightmares. In a bid to avoid being decapitated, Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) has to steal the Powder of Life from Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh) to escape. Unfortunately, she has to walk almost silently through a hallway of sleeping heads – and in full view of them – to get the powder. For extra pressure, it is placed inconveniently next to Mombi’s (real) head. Combined with David Shire’s powerful score, the slow-brewing tension from Dorothy’s delicate approach is blown apart by the ensuing screeching of multiple heads, not to mention being chased by a headless body. The whole sequence is terrifying as an adult but it’s horrifyingly out of place in a kid’s film – which is why it scars you for life. Katie Smith-Wong, @guitargalchinaThe Shining (1980) 84%(Photo by Warner Bros.)The scene: The woman in the bathroomThe scare: I refused to take a bath for a week. When I was seven, my father – much to the protestations of my mother – let me watch Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. When Jack Nicholson walks into that lime-green bathroom only to find the decrepit, rotting ghoul of an elderly woman cackling at him after he danced with and kissed her younger specter, I leapt as high as her laugh, and haven’t come down since. Ghcxuf (Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)There is a big difference between scary kids movies, and kids movies that just happen to scare kids. We wrote about the latter just last month, as we explored animated movies that weren t necessarily intended to be horror pieces, but still managed to traumatize young viewers. But the former, the kids movies that are actually meant to be scary, are quite a special thing. The 80s and early 90s gave us plenty of darker movies for kids that managed to be creepy enough to scare the young audience – and frankly, many of the adults who were sitting with them – but still provided enough wonder and entertainment for those kids to return to the films again and again. Just to be terrorized once more.Among these darker films, there is one that stands above the rest: the Nicolas Roeg adaptation of Roald Dahl s The Witches. The story of an orphan and his grandmother who happen upon a convention of witches at a seaside hotel – and the beginnings of a scheme to rid the world of children – landed in U.S. theaters in August of 1990, and was immediately heralded as a groundbreaking entry in the canon of dark kids movies. With grotesque makeup courtesy of Jim Henson s team, a chillingly memorable Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch, and Dahl s ceaselessly dark story, it would become a VHS favorite for more adventurous children. (A remake, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Octavia Spencer and Anne Hathaway, is due in theaters in 2021.)To mark the 30th anniversary of the terrifying, hilarious, and unforgettable original, we re going to avoid eating the soup and explore why this is the scariest kids film ever made. Period.Forget Scream: This is the Opening 10 Minutes That Still Keeps Us Up At Night Plenty of horror movies, both for kids and adults, take their sweet time getting to the good stuff. Thankfully, The Witches wastes nary a minute, opening with evil witches, a terrifying short story, and establishing its lore as grandma Helga (Mai Zetterling) explains to Luke (Jasen Fisher) her hatred for the story s vicious child-killing witches and how to spot them. Right out of the gate, the film taps directly into the Stranger Danger panic of the 80s, as Helga says,  You can never be sure if it s a witch you are looking at or a kind lady. Then shit gets really creepy. As Helga explains how to spot a witch – no toes, purple tinge to their eyes – she tells the story of how her childhood friend Erica became a victim to the witch that lived next door. The way the film frames Erica s disappearing in a laneway, kidnapped by the friendly neighbor, is enough to send chills down both kids and adults spines. But then Helga reveals that a few weeks after the kidnapping, she noticed a strange little girl in the painting Erica s dad bought the day she went missing. Turns out, Erica is trapped within the painting, cursed to live her life in a 2-D space, growing old until one day she disappears. (Find us a 90s kid who doesn t remember the haunting image of Erica in that) painting. In just 10 minutes, the movie mixes the fantastical concept of witches with the real fear of child abduction, and shatters our view of a group that we re traditionally taught to see as safe — the nice old lady across the street who gives you candy and pinches your cheek. Then, to cap things off, Luke s parents die.The Director Is A Horror Genius And Doesn t Hold Back Despite his reputation as a children s author, Dahl writes plenty of disturbing imagery into his work. While many directors adapting his stories play down that aspect of the material — think Matilda, The BFG — the director of one of the best and most adult horror films ever made, Don t Look Now, was determined to bring the cruelty and ugliness that The Witches required.Having Nicolas Roeg direct a kids movie certainly was an odd choice, on the surface, given the director s reputation for thrillers with plenty of sex appeal. And yet, Roeg manages to perfectly translate the unpleasantness of the titular witches to the big screen, and create a sense of unease throughout. Watch as he uses extreme close-ups and Dutch angles to give the entire film an unsettling vibe. This is particularly effective when Huston s Grand High Witch pushes a baby carriage towards a cliff s edge and a chase to save it unfolds; the scene is already shocking by its nature, but Roeg treats it with the same seriousness as he did his nightmarish, lost-in-Venice scenes in Don t Look Now, turning it into an unspeakable act of unfathomable sadism.Roeg has admitted that he accidentally let his son watch the dailies, which helped him realize what scenes were too terrifying for the final film.Roald Dahl Knew How to Exploit Kids  Worst FearsOf course, the film wouldn t have been possible without the bizarreness and horror of Dahl s original story. Though we mostly remember him for his classic works of children s fiction like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda, Dahl was not a stranger to horror. The author even hosted a pre-Twilight Zone sci-fi and horror anthology series called Way Out for CBS, and he always knew how to be scary without crossing a line, but also without ever talking down to his audience. In The Witches, Dahl explores that period in which kids start to realize the world may not be as safe or as bright as their parents made them believe. First, he does it by turning the nice old lady into a vicious monster, allowing Roeg to force us to look with suspicion at every character who enters the frame and sow distrust with every purple glint in a hotel worker s eye. Then, Dahl pulls a reverse Willy Wonka, using the chocolate bar as a poisonous weapon that threatens to turn every kid in England into a mouse. In Dahl s world, as faithfully rendered by Roeg – until the tacked-on happy ending at least – nothing is safe.Jim Henson s Grotesque Witch Makeup Caused Us All Kinds Of Nightmares(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures./Everett Collection)If there is one defining image of The Witches, it s the unmasking of Huston s Grand High Witch as she delivers her keynote address at the convention. After the stylish woman in that lush purple-lined cape walks onto the stage to the applause of her adoring fellow witches, she removes her wig to reveal a bald head — which we already knew to expect thanks to Helga s warnings. But then she goes a step further, removing her face mask to reveal a gnarly monster that seems part Skeksis, part Freddy Krueger. It s incredible work by Jim Henson s Creature Shop, and a far cry from either Kermit or even most of the creatures they conjured up for Labyrinth. The Grand High Witch is a masterpiece of horror makeup, and Henson s team dive fully into the ugliness and gnarly-ness of the look, which reportedly took several hours to put on and then even more hours to remove. There is more incredible work, too, as children and witches are transformed into mice, but it s Huston s transformation that sticks in the memory. The moment the witch removes her face is the moment the film affirms what it has so far only hinted at: behind the gentle smiles hide heinous monsters ready to devour you.Anjelica Huston Delivers One of the Great Horror Movie PerformancesIt s one thing to have a villain who looks the part, but The Witches only remains as memorable as it does because its villain also acts the part. Even before her nightmare-inducing transformation, Huston is an enthralling menace, vamping it up – what even is that accent – as she sashays flirtatiously one minute, and stares down and terrorizes the next. The Oscar-winner sells a completely different attitude than any other witch in the film. Instead of warm, gentle, and easy to approach, Huston s Grand High Witch exudes sex appeal, talks with a cold and detached voice that shows she knows she s more powerful than everyone in the room – she s Miranda Priestly, with certain unsavory appetites – and then writhes with pleasure when she s about to demonstrate her child-killing abilities. The film is constantly warning us against strangers, especially those who approach us with faked kindness, but Huston s Grand High Witch doesn t need to fake anything.  She is a repugnant and vile monster, and yet we – and seemingly every man who encounters her in the film – are drawn to her, almost admiring her for daring to be herself: a true witch, mask on or off.The Witches was released in U.S. theaters on August 24, 1990. It is available to stream on Netflix, and to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon Prime, and iTunes. 😈😈

These include comedy classics Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and The Naked Gun, along with their not quite as highly-regarded sequels.Meanwhile, the Final Destination series meets its grisly end. And so too does young Macaulay Culkin feel the sting, as My Girl and Richie Rich part ways with the platform. Lastly, that s all folks for Looney Tunes: Back in Action. Sure, the movie s no Space Jam. But what is?See the whole list of movies on Netflix leaving on May 31 below.Movies leaving Netflix on May 31, 2020Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) 53%Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) 73%Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) 52%Dear John (2010) 28%Final Destination (2000) 35%The Final Destination (2009) 28%Final Destination 2 (2003) 48%Final Destination 3 (2006) 44%Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) 28%Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) 56%My Girl (1991) 53%The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) 57%The Naked Gun (1988) 88%Outbreak (1995) 59%Red Dawn (2012) 15%Richie Rich (1994) 24% Ron Perlman has played some monster characters throughout his career, notably the titular Hellboy in two Guillermo del Toro–directed films about that red, horned, cigar-smoking comic book anti-hero; the grizzled gang leader Clay Morrow in FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy; and even his breakout role as Vincent from CBS s live-action Beauty and the Beast series, in which he starred opposite Linda Hamilton. With his latest series, he adds to the list. A lot of the characters that I ve played without makeup that are, you know, seemingly human are the most monstrous things I ve ever done, Perlman told Rotten Tomatoes when discussing new Peacock series, The Capture, which premieres on the launch day of NBC s new streaming service. The Capture — so incredibly well-rendered and so smart, the actor said — takes viewers deep into a highly surveilled world in which anyone with the wherewithal, and motive, can alter video footage and place a crime that never happened at the foot of a would-be criminal of their choosing. In the six-episode series, which was recently renewed by the BBC for a second season, Perlman plays Frank Napier, a CIA official leading a small team that monitors CCTV, the UK s expansive network of security cameras, in the name of upholding justice. But at what cost does such justice come where video evidence of a crime that was supposedly committed, may have been a hoax all along?(Photo by BBC/Heyday Films/Nick Wall)Perlman co-stars opposite Holliday Grainger (Patrick Melrose) as DI Rachel Carey and Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Shawn Emery, a former soldier framed for murder. With recent technological breakthroughs in deep-fake technology and the ever-growing trend of distrusting facts, the series fictional concept of Correction (the truth-altering tech featured in the series) feels both completely terrifying and absolutely plausible. [It s about] things I m personally obsessed with, in regards to the people that we look to in order to keep us safe and protected, Perlman said. How pure can we expect their motivations to be? Are their personal agendas spilling over into the things that (we hope) they do for purely ideological reasons? You know, for, hopefully, the greater good? These are all important questions to ask, especially when the news cycle is continuously recounting stories of law enforcement entities and government agencies that aren t exactly serving the people s best interests.Speaking on the series, and the many issues currently facing Americans, Perlman is quick to identify the  ripped apart nature of our politics where you don t know what you re being sold or who s selling it to you, a lot of the time. And for an actor who has been famously outspoken in his progressive beliefs on Twitter — he was briefly suspended from the platform in 2019 for comments made in a now-deleted tweet celebrating the death of Koch Industries Vice Chairman David Koch, and he recently got involved in an online scuffle with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz — his decision to play a conservative-leaning character in a questionable position of power becomes more intriguing. In The Capture, Perlman s Frank makes some callous choices and steps over the line of morality more than once in the interest of upholding national and international security. When asked if Napier is a monster, the actor has trouble giving a definitive answer. You can make an argument that Frank is so multifaceted that it s hard to figure out where the monster in him ends and the humanity begins, Perlman explained. So I mean, one of the fascinating things about trying to figure out how to play the guy is, for the whole history of the show, you ll walk away not knowing, was he a good guy? Was he a bad guy? I just don t know. (Photo by Sony Pictures)On the big screen, Perlman continues to team up with his close friend Del Toro. In the long-awaited new adaptation of Pinocchio, he plays Mangiafuoco, a character known to many as Stromboli, thanks to Walt Disney s 1940 film classic. He also appears in Paul W.S. Anderson s upcoming Monster Hunter, a big-budget movie adaptation of Capcom s action role-playing video game of the same name that stars Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa. The movie was scheduled to open this September, but has been pushed back to April 2021. Perlman, who described his role as Admiral in the flick to Comic Book Movie as a lot of chewing the scenery, was mostly mum about specific story details, but gave an impression of what to expect. I m not a gamer, so I m not familiar with the video game, Perlman said. I know that it has a huge following and huge popularity. I know that the production that Sony gave it, under the great leadership of Paul W.S. Anderson, was top draw. You know, it was just such a phenomenal experience and seemed like we were making a big-time movie — lots of titillating juicy battle scenes and chase scenes. There are a lot of high stakes, so this should be a good one to watch. And what about that a highly-publicized Twitter spat between Perlman and Cruz? The whole thing began after the U.S. Soccer Federation repealed its policy that prohibited athletes from kneeling during the national anthem as an act of protest against police brutality. The news drew ire from the likes of President Donald Trump and Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz who shamed the sports institution. Perlman soon added his two cents on Twitter, saying, The US Soccer team called and you guessed it said they couldn’t give any less of a f k about what you two dips ts think.”A follow-up tweet, directed at Gaetz and showing a photo of  Rep. Jim Jordan, a former wrestling coach accused of ignoring athletes reports of abuse by a doctor at Ohio State University, caught the attention of Cruz and sparked the war of words between the actor and the senator, who challenged Perlman to a wrestling match — with Jordan. The bizarre back-and-forth led Perlman to present a counteroffer to Cruz, promoting the idea that if the senator himself would face him in the ring, he d donate ,000 dollars to Black Lives Matter. They traded a few more barbs before things quieted down, but Perlman is still up for the challenge.Though he has made it very clear that he ll never play Hellboy on the big screen again, Perlman said he may be willing to reprise the role through voice-over in a virtual wrestling match with Cruz — perhaps in an animated special akin to, say, MTV s old Celebrity Death Match cartoon series. Would he step into Hellboy s shoes one more time for such a special occasion? Absolutely, said Perlman, laughing. [Cruz has] just said so many things that are so damaging to the concept of human discourse. He s one of the guys who has the most deleterious effect on the American consciousness, which is: He s designed to make us cynical. He s designed to make us disengaged. He s designed his whole modus operandi to say stuff that makes us into disbelievers rather than people who are rallying around some beautiful concepts that Americans pledge allegiance to. He s a diabolical villain. And so any chance I get virtually to have a smackdown with this motherf er, I would jump at the opportunity.  The Capture launches on Peacock on July 15.

Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. Last week, we covered the year s biggest Fresh news stories, and this week, we re looking at the ones we deemed most Rotten instead.JANUARY: KEVIN HART PASSES GO, WILL COLLECT (AT LEAST) 0, IN MONOPOLY(Photo by Warner Bros.)Kevin Hart s Tomatometer has been getting better in the last few years, starting with his partnership with Dwayne Johnson in Central Intelligence (which carried into their Jumanji movies), and including his voice role in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 88%). Before 2016, however, his track record mostly carried a broad series of Rotten splotches, with only a few Fresh tomatoes, and most of those were for his comedy concert films. Hart had several new movies announced in 2019 (including Black Friday, Extreme Job, and remakes of Scrooged and Uptown Saturday Night), but it all started in January with the long-in-development board game adaptation of Monopoly. The idea of a movie based on the classic Monopoly board game has been kicking around for over a decade, including a time when Ridley Scott was attached, but the Monopoly movie we ll actually get sounds a drastic switch. Kevin Hart will star in Monopoly for Lionsgate and Hasbro, with his Ride Along director Tim Story also on board.FEBRUARY: BRAD PITT S ZOMBIE FIGHT ENDS WITH SCRAPPING OF WORLD WAR Z SEQUEL   (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures)If you were a big fan of Brad Pitt and director Marc Foster s zombie movie World War Z, February brought some bad news. After years of near-starts and delays, Paramount Pictures finally, apparently definitively, pulled the plug on a World War Z sequel. Pre-production was reportedly already well underway for a six month shoot in Atlanta and other nations around the world, but that also meant the budget exploded to over 0 million, and that was the breaking point for Paramount. Technically, it sounds like World War Z might come back, even with a sequel, in the future, but if it does, it would be with a much lower budget, without Foster directing, and possibly without Brad Pitt as well. [Editor s note: an earlier version listed David Fincher as editor of World War Z. This has been corrected and we regret the error.]MARCH: DISNEY/FOX MERGER LEADS TO SHELVING OF PROMISING X-MEN PROJECTS (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)In March, Disney finalized its .3 billion deal to acquire the entertainment assets of the Fox film and TV studios. The deal was widely applauded by Marvel Comics fans who are eager to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters and properties now available for Marvel Studios in their future movies (though probably not until after 2022). However, that also meant that some/many of the projects that Fox had been developing would be shelved, including X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and Madrox the Multiple Man. We ll never know what those movies might have been like, and it s definitely possible some would have been Rotten (given Fox s record on recent X-Men movies). They re good examples, however, of the wide scope of Marvel movies we would have gotten if Marvel and Sony also had Fox developing movies every year. How long will it take now for Marvel Studios to go deep enough into their catalog to greenlight movies like Kitty Pryde and Madrox the Multiple Man?APRIL: THE BAD MOMS MOMS TO GET THEIR OWN MOVIE(Photo by STX Entertainment)After Bad Moms earned 3 million globally in the summer of 2016, it was followed by the sequel A Bad Moms Christmas in 2017. That second film introduced grandmother characters played by Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon, and in April, we learned that they re going to get their own movie called Bad Moms Moms. It s not yet known if Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, and Mila Kunis will reprise their roles as well, or if the third movie might introduce the next set of older great-grandmas (who could then get their own movie called Bad Moms Moms Moms). Both Bad Moms and A Bad Moms Christmas earned Rotten Tomatometer scores at 58% and 30%, respectively.MAY: SONIC THE HEDGEHOG TRAILER BACKLASH SPARKS REDESIGN (Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)Some of the year s most Rotten stories represent missteps that were eventually corrected, but we are looking at these stories as they were at the time. In this case, Paramount appeared to get the message within the same week, but still, at the time, the reaction was very negative. After all, Paramount Pictures should ve seen this one coming. In April, the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer debuted, and the collective fan backlash against Sonic s design was even louder this time. (The eyes are too small, the nose is at the wrong angle, and the teeth. Where to even begin on the teeth?) The Sonic the Hedgehog missteps were only accentuated by the timing of the trailer in the same week as the first Pokemon Detective Pikachu reviews, as that film has not one but dozens of video game characters that look pretty much exactly like they do in the games. The good news, however, is that Sonic the Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler quickly responded on Twitter, The message is loud and clear you aren t happy with the design you want changes. Those changes came later in the year as we got a new Sonic the Hedgehog trailer in which he did indeed look a lot more like he does in the games. Sonic the Hedgehog is now scheduled as a Valentine s release on 2/14/2020.JUNE: SECURITY CAMERAS TO BE HAUNTED AGAIN IN PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 7 (Photo by Paramount Pictures)It s now been over four years since 2015 s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension earned the franchise s lowest box office to date, domestically earning one fifth less than the first film. The Paranormal Activity movies were also relatively affordable to produce, so it was probably inevitable that Paramount Pictures would want to start making them again. Producer Jason Blum (of Blumhouse Productions) is now developing Paranormal Activity 7 for Paramount, although the premise isn t yet known (though it seems obvious that it will probably be another found footage horror film). The Tomatometer scores for the last three films (24%, 39%, and 15%, respectively) don t offer much hope for the next installment, unfortunately. Since this news broke in June, Paramount has scheduled Paranormal Activity 7 for release on March 19, 2021, up against the second Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander, and the week before The Boss Baby 2.JULY: LOOK WHO S REMAKING LOOK WHO S TALKING(Photo by TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)One of the oddest examples of movies that ended up getting two sequels to justify it becoming a trilogy might arguably be 1989 s Look Who s Talking (Rotten at 59%), which was followed in 1990 by Look Who s Talking Too (Rotten at 14%), and in 1993 by Look Who s Talking Now (Rotten at 0%). John Travolta and Kirstie Alley starred in those movies about talking babies, and in the third movie, talking dogs. Despite those critical drubbings, Sony Pictures is now developing a Look Who s Talking reboot to be written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, whose 2015 comedy The Wedding Ringer earned a Rotten score at 27%. It s not yet known if Bruce Willis or any of the other voice actors might return for the reboot (but they probably won t).

皇冠体育真人 This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Final Destination 6 and the sequel to Spider-Man: Far from Home. This WEEK S TOP STORYPARASITE DIRECTOR BONG JOON-HO MIGHT DO A MUSICAL NEXT (Photo by Kimberly French/©Netflix)Ever since director Bong Joon-ho s surprising victories for Parasite at the Academy Awards last month, discussions about what he might direct next have been frequent online. It wasn t until this week, however, that we got an idea directly from Bong himself, and the surprising answer is, I would love to make a musical. Bong continued, Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, **** this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ in the Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different. Moving from Parasite to a deconstructed musical wouldn t be the first time Bong Joon-ho has switched genre gears drastically, as his filmography has also included a monster movie (The Host), post-apocalyptic science fiction (Snowpiercer), and most recently before Parasite, an action adventure about a genetically modified pig (Okja).Other Top Headlines1. TOM HOLLAND HINTS HIS THIRD SPIDER-MAN WILL BE ABSOLUTELY INSANE (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)The COVID-19 crisis is obviously causing many film productions to be delayed, but for now, the film industry appears to be sticking to existing plans further out. Tom Holland, for example, is apparently still planning to start filming of his third solo movie as Spider-Man in July. Although we don t yet have an idea of who the villain(s) might be (J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson might be one obvious answer), Holland did describe the third film as absolutely insane, and that Zendaya will be returning as MJ. The movie release schedule is very much still in flux, but Sony Pictures currently has the next Spider-Man scheduled for July 16, 2021.2. PAUL BETTANY JOINS DAVID GORDON GREEN S CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA MOVIE(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although some directors stay rather narrowly within their own personal wheelhouses, others seem quite comfortable with experimenting with a variety of different genres throughout their careers. One example is David Gordon Green, who started with the indie dramas George Washington and All the Real Girls, which then led to the comedies Pineapple Express and Your Highness, and is currently halfway through the horror trilogy of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Halloween Kills (10/16/2020), and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Green will reportedly film Halloween Ends late this year (depending on possible delays), and then move on to an untitled drama about the Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal. Paul Bettany, who later this year will star in the Disney+ series WandaVision, is reportedly now set to star in the project as the company s CEO Alexander Nix. The lead character of Christopher Wylie is still yet to be cast.3. WHAT STEVEN SPIELBERG REALLY WANTS IS FOR VIN DIESEL TO DIRECT (Photo by Universal Pictures)Many successful actors eventually expand into directing their own films, but Vin Diesel is actually a rare example of a movie star who actually directed a feature film before the roles that made him famous. In 1997, Diesel directed the indie drama Strays, which predates Pitch Black by three years and The Iron Giant by two. This week, while promoting Bloodshot (Rotten at 30%), Diesel talked about a recent conversation he had with Steven Spielberg, who reportedly said to Diesel, When I wrote the role for you in Saving Private Ryan, I was obviously employing the actor, but I was also secretly championing the director in you, and you have not directed enough. That is a crime of cinema and you must get back in the directing chair.’ I haven’t directed enough. Vin Diesel didn t give any indication about what sort of movie he might consider directing next.4. JAMIE FOXX TO DIRECT FAITH-BASED DRAMA WHEN WE PRAY (Photo by Warner Bros.)In addition to all of the movies that were recently delayed from release, it s also worth remembering all of the films that were already in release limbo before the coronavirus outbreak even started. Jamie Foxx made his directorial debut with the basketball comedy All-Star Weekend, which was filmed in late 2018, but going into 2020, All-Star Weekend  had not yet secured a distributor in the USA. While the world still waits on his first film, Foxx is now gearing up for his second film as director, which we learned this week will be a faith-based drama called When We Pray. It s unclear if Foxx will also co-star in the film, which will be about two brothers who become pastors at different churches in the same community. The budget of When We Pray is expected to be less than million.5. FINAL DESTINATION 6 DETAILS REVEALED AS ORIGINAL CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY In addition to being St. Patrick s Day, this Tuesday was sort of dominated by news about the COVID-19 crisis, so even the most avid fans of the Final Destination franchise may have not noticed that the original Final Destination (Rotten at 34%) reached its 20th anniversary on that day. It has also been almost nine years since 2011 release of Final Destination 5 (Fresh at 62%), but screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are now developing a sixth Final Destination project. Producer Craig Perry revealed this week that their current plan for the next Final Destination is having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die. Most of the earlier films centered around high school or college students, so it sounds like Final Destination 6 might feature older characters.6. CATS FANS DEMAND TO SEE THE  BUTTHOLE CUT (Photo by Universal Pictures)For a few years now since Justice League (Rotten at 40%) was released in 2017, there has been a #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement asking for Warner Bros. to release the film as it would have been before Joss Whedon filmed reshoots. With that as context, this Tuesday, actor and comedian Seth Rogen live-Tweeted his experience watching Cats while ahem under the influence, at the end of which he retweeted screenwriter Jack Waz, who had himself responded to another Cats-related tweet by Ben Mekler by saying that a VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November [whose] entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats. And this is how ridiculous online movements get started. Within hours, #ReleasetheButtholeCut was trending on Twitter, which led Universal Pictures to respond thusly, Hopefully that will add to the magic and mythical nature of the cinematic treasure. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), Mekler received an email the next morning from an unidentified VFX artist who explained that there were never any buttholes to begin with, but that there were a dozen or so shots where the skin and fur sim was groomed or just folded in a way that really REALLY looked like very furry lady genitals and buttholes by accident, and that artists were charged with painting them out. Mekler then put out an open invitation to people who worked on Cats to DM him their best stories, so we may still get a juicy piece of Cats lore out of this after all.
