Over the years, Rotten Tomatoes has had the chance to sit down with some of the biggest stars and filmmakers on the planet, and in new video series The Vault, we’ve collected the most memorable moments from those interviews and put them in one handy place so that you can relive the big laughs, sharp insights, and questionable haircuts all in one bite.In this episode, we’re talking a trip down memory lane with the stars and creators of some of the biggest hits from Marvel Studios. Want to see what The Guardians of the Galaxy stars said about the film before they knew it was going to be a groundbreaking mega franchise? Or watch as the cast of Infinity War squirms and dodges as they avoid revealing the biggest spoiler in movie history? We’ve got you. Plus, we chatted and played games with the stars of Deadpool 2, the X-Men Films, Age of Ultron, and more, including the late great Stan Lee himself. The Vault is just one of many awesome new series you can find on The Rotten Tomatoes Channel, now available The Roku Channel and Peacock, and soon available on XUMO TV and beyond. It’s a 24/7 non-stop ode to the best in movies and TV, packed with nostalgic looks back at great moments and awesome trailers, interviews with mega-stars and game-changing filmmakers, and trivia, games, and hilarious debates. Check it out – we think you’ll like it.Learn more about The Rotten Tomatoes Channel and where to watch it. The problem they face, and the one we face on an hourly basis, is the very concept of fairness. But as Karli eludes to in her eulogy to Donya Madani and expressly says to Sam a few minutes later, a part of the fairness she seeks is the peace and prosperity she found in the years of the Blip. Fairness is an equitable share of resources and an unprecedented freedom of movement. It is also means the chance to build things as communities united in a humanist philosophy instead of the old distinctions of race, country, and religion.Sam supports these ideals in theory, but as he missed the Blip years, he cannot really understand what it was like. Like Bucky s limited empathy with Ayo about King T Chaka s death, Sam s understanding of the Blip world falters no matter how many times he tells Karli he gets it. Admittedly, it sounds like a paradise to us, but it comes at an unacceptable cost. And as we now know Karli is willing to commit to the grim calculus, it makes their conversation all the sadder. Then there s that moment when Sam almost gets through to her before Walker bursts in. Now, the only way forward is blood for Karli and Walker.Power Broker Watch: Episode 4 Edition(Photo by Marvel Studios)We presume Sam will try to keep the peace, but like Karli, he will be fighting a war on two fronts. For Karli, that second battle will be with the Power Broker, who will be none too thrilled to learn the remaining serum vials are gone. We still don t know who the Power Broker is, however. Like last week, Sharon is still a possibility. Her free movement through Madripoor, access to satellites, and high-tech command station certainly suggest a level of clout and resources far beyond the picture she gave to Sam last week. It is possible she works for S.H.I.E.L.D. or S.W.O.R.D.; in fact, as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was meant to stream before WandaVision, Sharon s shadiness may have been meant to lead into the agency s first appearance. Or maybe she really did break bad and fund a new Super Soldier program. A showdown between her and Karli would be unexpected. It is also possible the Power Broker will be the special episode 5 cameo showrunner Malcolm Spellman alluded to in recent days. But after all the digital ink we spilled with WandaVision s supposed cameo, we re unwilling to put a lot of thought into this possibility. If it turns out to be Victor Von Doom or Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), we ll be pleasantly surprised. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles such as Morbius, a Baby Driver sequel, and a new female-led Fast Furious spinoff. This WEEK S TOP STORYJAMES GANDOLFINI S SON WILL PLAY YOUNG TONY SOPRANO(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)HBO s The Sopranos obviously had a single lead, but James Gandolfini was supported by a large ensemble cast, so the prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark is likely to have a large cast as well. The main character in this story about the 1967 Newark race riots will be Dickie Moltisanti (played by Alessandro Nivola), the father of Christopher Moltisanti from The Sopranos. ( Moltisanti translates from Italian as many saints. ) We ve also learned recently of the casting of first Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), rumored to play Tony Soprano s parents, and then Corey Stoll (Ant-Man) and Billy Magnussen (Game Night). We know from The Sopranos that Tony Soprano was around during this era, and now we also know that young Tony will be played by James Gandolfini s actual son, Michael Gandolfini, who was also in HBO s The Deuce. Gandolfini won the opportunity to reprise his father s most famous role following an extensive audition process [and] his screen presence, mastery of Tony’s mannerisms, coupled with his resemblance to the elder Gandolfini made him the standout choice for the role because no one there understood the character better. New Line Cinema is expected to open The Many Saints of Newark in wide release theatrically, in either late 2019 or sometime in 2020.Fresh Developments1. BIRD BOX REUNION: NETFLIX AND SANDRA BULLOCK ARE REBORN(Photo by Netflix)Netflix famously does not disclose viewership numbers for most of their shows and movies. (Very often, pundits are left to guess at numbers based on social media reactions.) That s why it was significant a few weeks back when the streaming giant confirmed that over 45,000,000 accounts had viewed the thriller Bird Box, breaking the company s first seven days record. Just after Bird Box celebrated the end of its first month on Netflix, the news broke that the company and its Bird Box star are reuniting for another genre-based book adaptation. Sandra Bullock, Netflix, and the producers of IT are teaming up to adapt Mark Millar s comic book Reborn, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, Certified Fresh at 90%). Reborn joins a busy slate for Chris McKay, who is also developing adaptations of Jonny Quest, Nightwing (AKA Dick Grayson), and Dungeons Dragons, all for Warner Bros. Bullock is expected to star as an 80-year-old woman who dies in a Manhattan hospital to find herself Reborn in the afterlife world of Adystria, a magical land of monsters and dragons where good and evil are waging an eternal war. Reborn was written by Kick-Ass and Kingsman creator Mark Millar, who signed a lucrative deal in 2017 that also includes Netflix shows based on Millar s American Jesus and Jupiter s Legacy.2. EDGAR WRIGHT WORKING ON BABY DRIVER SEQUEL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR FILM(Photo by Wilson Webb/TriStar)It has now been over 18 months since the release of Baby Driver, the long-in-development heist movie from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), following his high profile departure from Ant-Man. Wright continues to move forward on a sequel, a script for which he says exists in a first draft. In the meantime, he s now preparing to direct another original project this summer. We don t know a title or any casting yet, but Edgar Wright s next film will reportedly be a psychological horror film with a female lead set in the Soho district of contemporary London. Exact story details aren t available, but Wright has cited both Don t Look Now and Repulsion as inspirations, which suggests a film filled with hallucinations and paranoia.3. RON HOWARD TO ADAPT BESTSELLING HILLBILLY ELEGY FOR NETFLIX (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Universal Pictures)Netflix currently has their most ambitious project to date, Martin Scorsese s 5+ million mobster epic The Irishman, in post-production, aiming for 2019 s awards season, and is showing little signs of slowing down in their pursuit for major productions. The latest example came this morning with the news that Netflix is committing million to produce director Ron Howard s adaptation of the bestselling book Hillbilly Elegy. J.D. Vance s book is a memoir about his childhood growing up in a small town in Ohio after his family moves there from the Appalachian area of Kentucky. Howard and his Imagine Entertainment have a long relationship with Universal Pictures, so the move to Netflix is a major development, with the budget Netflix was willing to put up reportedly being the deciding factor. Ron Howard is coming off last year s Solo: A Star Wars Story and is currently working on a documentary about opera star Luciano Pavarotti. Hillbilly Elegy is being adapted by screenwriter Vanessa Taylor, who co-wrote The Shape of Water and is also working on the Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos movie Bad Blood.4. NICOLAS CAGE WILL FREAK OUT WHEN HE SEES THE COLOR OUT OF SPACE(Photo by RLJE Films)Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) may have been one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, but big budget Hollywood has largely ignored his works (although there have been dozens of independent movies). If there s a single story that best exemplifies the difficulty in adapting Lovecraft to film, it just might be the 1927 short story  The Colour Out of Space. That s because the premise revolves around what scientists call an impossible color (basically, a color that humans can t perceive). Put another way, you can t very well film a color which your human audience can t see. Well, that story is indeed getting its own movie, Color Out of Space, with Nicolas Cage reuniting with the producers of Mandy (Certified Fresh at 92%). Cage will play a New England small town farmer whose life is turned topsy-turvy following the crash of a meteorite that brings the titular color to Earth. Color Out of Space will be directed by South African director Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) as his first feature film in over 20 years since he was (reportedly) fired from directing 1996 s The Island of Dr. Moreau.5. VIN DIESEL CONFIRMS PLANS FOR FEMALE-CENTRIC FAST FURIOUS SPINOFF (Photo by Scott Garfield/Universal Pictures)As of next Friday, we will be within six months of Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, the spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Filming of the next entry (Fast Furious 9) of the main Fast Furious franchise will reportedly begin in April, but Vin Diesel confirmed this week that a third branch of the family tree is now being officially developed. Diesel and his producer sister Samantha Vincent took to Instagram to reveal that they have hired three screenwriters to work on a female protagonist-led Fast Furious spinoff. Lindsey Beer co-wrote next year s post-apocalyptic thriller Chaos Walking (starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley), and is also working on reboots of Short Circuit and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Geneva Robertson-Dworet co-wrote Captain Marvel and last year s Tomb Raider. As for Nicole Perlman, she co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy (co-starring Vin Diesel), and is also working on Detective Pikachu, the Labyrinth remake, and Marvel Studios Black Widow. We don t know yet who will star in the spinoff, but Michelle Rodriguez is probably at the top of the list.6. THIS WEEK IN RELEASE DATES: THE CRAWL, JOHN CENA S PLAYING WITH FIRE, BAD NEWS FOR THE LOUD HOUSE(Photo by Mary Cybulski/Universal Pictures)Paramount Pictures announced release dates for two films this week and yanked another project from their schedule completely, signalling that the project has probably been cancelled. The Crawl is a natural disaster horror film about a young woman who becomes trapped in a flooding house during a Category 5 hurricane and must battle against Florida’s most savage and feared predators, and it s now scheduled for August 23, 2019, up against Angel Has Fallen (the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen). Playing with Fire is a family comedy about three orphaned kids sent to separate foster homes, with wrestler-turned-actor John Cena starring, along with Judy Greer, John Leguizamo, and Keegan-Michael Key. Playing with Fire is scheduled for March 20, 2020 (the week before Disney s Mulan remake, and Paramount s G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes). Finally, Paramount has pulled a movie based on the Nickelodeon animated series The Loud House from their slate, where it had formerly been scheduled for February 7, 2020.7. FORMER DOCTOR WHO MATT SMITH JOINS JARED LETO IN SONY/MARVEL S MORBIUS(Photo by BBC courtesy Everett Collection)Following the box office success of Venom (5 million globally as #6 for 2018) and the acclaim and awards given to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures is moving forward confidently with their plans to adapt their share of Marvel s properties. Jared Leto has been attached to star as the vampire anti-hero Morbius for a while now (with July 10, 2020 speculated to be the film s target date). The second actor to join Morbius will be Matt Smith, who is still best known to American audiences for playing the 11th incarnation of BBC s Doctor Who. Smith s role is currently unknown, but Collider is speculating that he may play Loxias Crown, a friend of the scientist Michael Morbius who takes the same serum but is transformed into a more evil bloodthirsty creature. In related news, we also learned this week that transgender actor Zach Barack has been cast in this summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019) in what is a groundbreaking first for a superhero movie of this scale.8. GINA RODRIGUEZ TO STAR IN LONG-IN-DEVELOPMENT BOBBIE SUE (Photo by John Castillo/Indomina Releasing)The fifth and final season of the CW series Jane the Virgin is set to debut in March, and its star Gina Rodriguez is continuing to seek more movie roles (like last year s Annihilation) to expand her career past television. With that in mind, Warner Bros. has cast Rodriguez to star as Bobbie Sue, which has been in development since 2008. (At one point Cameron Diaz had been attached to star.) Rodriguez will play a young woman from South Boston who is a scrappy, headstrong young lawyer who lands a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. Bobbie Sue will be directed by Charles Stone III, whose most recent film was last year s Uncle Drew (63%), and who also directed Drumline (Certified Fresh at 82%) and the baseball comedy Mr. 3000 (54%).Rotten Idea1. KEVIN HART JOINS BODY-SWAP COMEDY BLACK FRIDAY(Photo by Warner Bros.)Put simply, a movie star s box office status is not defined simply by being in very successful films, but also by their ability to ensure that people will buy tickets for films they might not otherwise. The million opening weekend for The Upside was not itself huge, but significantly more than one might otherwise think a remake of a French movie from 2011 might be. In the last two weeks, Hollywood has been making deals quickly with Kevin Hart s people, which last week alone included signing Hart to star in the Monopoly movie and a tragic drama called Fatherhood. This week, STXfilms signed Hart for two comedies, the first of which will be a body swapping fantasy called Black Friday, which will be followed by an untitled international romantic comedy. No other details were revealed about Black Friday, but the title suggests it might the body swapping might be racial in nature. We re calling this a Rotten Idea because STXfilms The Upside earned a 39% Tomatometer.华体会体育官方Mindhunter: Season 2 (2019) 99% Description: The Behavioral Science Unit’s killer instincts move from theory into action when the FBI joins in a high-profile hunt for a serial child murderer.Premiere Date: Aug. 16, 2019

3.88.1 7月喜迎(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Disney remained in full dominance at the box office this weekend, though Quentin Tarantino had the biggest opening of his career and a shot at his fourth 0 million grosser.King of the Crop(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)No surprise that Disney’s The Lion King was able to hold on to the No. 1 slot this week. Even with a 60 percent drop, the animated film was still able to haul in million. That is the ninth-best second weekend of all time, and with 3 million in the bank it is good enough for eighth place after ten days of release. Incredibles 2 last year had 9.7 million and the live-action Beauty and the Beast was at 9 million in 2017. They now move down to ninth and tenth all-time. All signs right now suggest Jon Favreau’s redo is headed north of 0 million domestic. It is over 2 million worldwide to date and already 47th on the all-time chart.Once Upon a Time…Generally, films about Hollywood and the industry do not draw the same reactions from the public as they do from critics and people in the know. Comedies such as Tropic Thunder, Get Shorty, and Bowfinger have done well enough, but more inside baseball stuff about the business, like Ed Wood and Hail, Caesar!, have not exactly attracted major interest. But throw in two of the most recognizable names in front of the camera and a third behind it and all of a sudden you have Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which earned the biggest opening of Quentin Tarantino’s career with .35 million. Better even than his last go-round with Brad Pitt in August 2009 when Inglourious Basterds opened to .05 million. However, it may be the other star that is the true secret sauce.Leonardo DiCaprio is as safe a bet these days in casting original projects. Directors like Martin Scorsese and Christopher Nolan help, but the Oscar winner also elevated Baz Luhrmann and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to the biggest successes of their careers as well. DiCaprio’s last four films (including his supporting turn in Django Unchained) have grossed 6 million or higher. Go back a full decade to 2010 and you can make the streak six out of seven (with Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar being the sole outlier with just .3 million total). Inception (.7 million), The Great Gatsby ( million), and Shutter Island ( million) all opened higher, but that just means that Once Upon a Time is the fourth-best opener of DiCaprio’s career, just as it is Pitt’s. World War Z (.4 million), Mr. Mrs. Smith (.3 million), and Troy (.8 million) all opened higher. Pitt has had ten 0 million grossers as either a lead or co-lead. If you count Django, then DiCaprio has had ten as well. An opening like this certainly gives both actors a chance to take those numbers to 11.The Top Ten And Beyond(Photo by Sony Pictures)Spider-Man: Far From Home crossed the billion-dollar line worldwide this week; it is the first Spidey film to do so. With 4 million after 27 days, the film overall is still right in line with 0 million grosser The Hunger Games and still a bit ahead of 2002’s Spider-Man. However, its fourth weekend of .2 million is well behind the respective million and .5 million fourth weekends of those films, so it is fading a bit faster. Transformers: Dark of the Moon posted a million fourth weekend as well, and finished with 2 million. Far From Home is still about million ahead of that film’s place and is likely headed somewhere in the vicinity of Spider-Man 2’s 3 million. Worldwide it is currently the 32nd-best earner of all time and seems on track to pass Skyfall’s .108 billion and become Sony’s highest-grossing film ever.Toy Story 4 is going to cross 0 million domestic next weekend, and after 38 days is the 18th-highest grosser ever. Its .8 million sixth weekend is better than 11 of the top 20 films on that list, and looks ready to finish north of 5 million. That will help get the film over a billion as it currently stands as the 56th-highest-grossing film ever worldwide. Ahead of it at the moment, globally, is Disney’s live-action Aladdin, which, with .009 billion in the bank, is the 39th-highest-grosser ever. Finally, in limited release news, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell — still brandishing a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer — made it into the Top Ten this weekend. It is the first film not in wide release to hit the top ten since the weekend of Mar. 22-24 when No Manches Frida 2 grossed .77 million in 472 theaters. The Farewell is only in 135 theaters nationwide and grossed .55 million this weekend. How does that stack up to similar releases? That is better than A24’s Eighth Grade did last summer when it expanded to 158 theaters in weekend three and grossed .26 million. When Revolutionary Road jumped to the same number of theaters in its third weekend, it grossed .42 million that week and went on to gross .91 million total. Among a sample of some of the more successful indie releases between 125-150 theaters at this point, The Farewell is not quite up to the heights of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Midnight In Paris, but with .6 million after 17 days it is ahead of all the rest of them, including such notable titles as There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Thank You For Smoking. Next weekend’s nationwide expansion will paint a larger picture. This Time Last Year(Photo by © Paramount)It was Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible – Fallout handily leading the way with a .23 million opening. That was more than the next five films in the top ten combined, including the disappointing bow for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which only began with .41 million. Both films were very well-liked with critics, scoring 97% and 91%, respectively. Last year’s entire Top Ten averaged 71% on the Tomatometer and the Top Ten grossed 3.33 million; just the 42nd-best among July weekends since 1990. This year’s Top Ten averaged 73.7% on the Tomatometer and grossed a total of 2.52 million, only the 34th best.On the Vine: Hobbs Shaw Hopes For Spinoff SuccessFor the third week in a row Hollywood is delivering just a single new wide release into theaters and it could be another big one. Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw hopes to explode next week after the previous three films in the franchise opened to million or higher. Will Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s partnership draw the loyal fanbase to similar numbers? Also next week, A24 expands Lulu Wang’s The Farewell nationwide. And look for other well-received Sundance fare in limited release, including Luce (95%) with Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, and Kelvin Harrison Jr., as well as Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to
[Ava] got everybody on the same page and created a familial environment where everybody felt that we were creating this story from a place of love. James:  Ava really is one of a kind. It takes a special sort of filmmaker to pull off what she did in Selma. And on her first big-budget film. She really hadn t made a film for over a million dollars before Selma. And for me, I can just remember being just a little bit in awe of the way she helmed the set. We had all these days of hundreds of background actors, horses, and just wild and crazy things. It could be a lot for a director. But she got everybody on the same page and created this familial environment where everybody felt [the] energy that we were creating this story from a place of love, and understood the responsibility in telling the story. THE MOMENT: The Final Crossing Of the BridgeUnder the crippling Alabama sun, the movie s cast of Oscar-caliber actors, talented newcomers, and hundreds of background players and crew members assembled on the Edmund Pettus Bridge to recreate history – over and over. The film depicts three attempts to cross the bridge. The first attempt took place March 7, 1965, and became known as Bloody Sunday after State Troopers attacked the protesters – a confrontation DuVernay captures in unsparing detail. Two days later, Dr. King led a group of thousands to the bridge, including clergy from across the country who took to their knees to pray with him in front of gathered troopers, before he turned the march around – a pivotal move that encouraged President Johnson to introduce the Voting Rights bill into Congress shortly thereafter. The final time we see the bridge is for DuVernay s depiction of the events of March 21, 1965, when Dr. King led the federally sanctioned march from Selma that would end with a rally on the steps of the Montgomery capitol four days later. It s this final triumphant march in the film that lingers as a testament to what Dr. King achieved, but much of its power rests on the raw depiction of the events that preceded it.Wendell Pierce and Stephan James in Selma. (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/©Paramount Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection) Wearing a backpack the same way that I did on March 7, 1965 The young man who played Dr. King was dressed like Martin Luther King Jr.  Rep. Lewis:  I did have a chance to spend time with the young man who played me and the young man who played Martin Luther King Jr. I got to know them fairly well. The two young people that I got to know, they really became the embodiment of the whole struggle in Selma. They made the film so real, not only the way they spoke but the clothing that they wore. I really loved the way they tried to walk in our shoes. It made the film so real with the young man wearing a trench coat and wearing a backpack the same way that I did. The young man who played Dr. King was dressed like Martin Luther King Jr., and he spoke like Martin Luther King Jr. James:  It s a big credit to the great wardrobe stylists, the head of costumes, Ruth E. Carter. We were totally factual in terms of the clothes of John Lewis, Dr. King, and everybody on Bloody Sunday. We were 100 percent accurate. We followed those photos from those exact moments. I think we all understood how sacred that bridge was, and what our jobs were in reenacting this whole moment. James:  We didn t have a whole lot of time. I d say maybe three to five [takes] of the full walk. There are so many people, cast and background actors; we only have a few shots at this. And everybody would just get together, get on the same page and did it in unison. I can t remember how many people there were but, cast and crew included, and there was just this sort of solemn sort of energy where everybody sort of understood what we were doing. I think we all understood how sacred that bridge was and what our jobs were in reenacting this whole moment. We were retracing historical footsteps – I mean you re literally tracing the steps. These steps that have guided us through the history of our country. It s meaningful. And it gets to the point where you re not just making a film; you re recreating a moment in time. Marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/©Paramount Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection) You just think about how brave this man is and what he did to inspire a generation of people like him. Rep. Lewis:  I did get an opportunity to visit the set at a church in Atlanta. And while being there, visiting the set, a storm came up, and it started thundering and lightning, and they had to cut off the filming for a while and start it over again. But it reminded me of sometimes, during mass beatings and rallies and church services, a storm would come up, in Alabama or some other part of the deep south, and you had to get in the action. James:  I really hadn t spoken to John in the flesh. I had some communications with him through email. But to actually see him in the flesh for the first time He walked in the middle of one of our scenes, and it was one of those moments where everything like freezes, and he s the only person who is still in real time. You just think about how brave this man is and what he did to inspire a generation of people like him who are changing the world now today. And he s still doing incredible work. I just saw him the other day at the Academy Awards. We shared a little moment. It s pretty special to meet a guy like that in person and just know the impact he s had on your life and the impact that he s had on the world. THE IMPACT: A New Legacy of ActivismSelma earned rightful praise for its historical accuracy, the nuance and beauty of its storytelling, and for its performances – it sits Certified Fresh at 99% on the Tomatometer. And it ushered in a new wave of formidable talent; not just DuVernay, but Oyelowo and co-stars like Tessa Thompson, LaKeith Stanfield, Andre Holland, and, of course, James, who would go on to star in Amazon s Homecoming. Its impact off-camera has been powerful, too. Selma has become a standard in history classes, and some say it was the turning point for major changes to the Academy Awards. The movie received two Oscar nominations at the 2015 ceremony: Best Picture and Best Original Song for Glory, performed by John Legend and featuring Common, which would win on the night. But many moviegoers and industry insiders were shocked to see DuVernay and Oyelowo left out of the Best Director and Best Actor categories, respectively. Frustrated by the snubs and the fact that no persons of color were nominated for major awards that year, Twitter user April Reign created the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag that trended globally for several days, and which had an impact that would last years. The Academy responded to the controversy by passing new rules and voting guidelines that helped to make membership more closely resemble that of the general moviegoing audience. The efforts have resulted in a new crop of Academy voters and possibly the nominations that would go to non-traditional films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Black Panther, Lady Bird, Get Out, and The Shape of Water. In recreating history, DuVernay had made some history of her own. It moved me. They were able to make the drama come alive on the streets of Selma. Rep. Lewis:  Watching the film and just listening to the music. It moved me. They were able to make the drama come alive on the streets of Selma. To make the words, the suffering, the tears, the crying, but also the strength and the determination that, in spite of everything, that we were going to continue until we got the Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed. People started singing Glory. I watched with students high school, elementary school, teachers, parents and we just start singing Glory and I start singing, and they cry, then I cry, and we are crying together. Because you cannot separate the essence of Selma without Glory.' James:  I can t remember anything that I ve been prouder to be a part of than Selma. I think the way that the whole film came together I just felt incredibly fortunate to have been a part of that cast, with that ensemble, under the direction of Ava. And to share that moment with my mom and my cousins who I brought to the film s premiere. I don t know, it felt like a dream come true and something I won t forget.

THE AMAZONS FROM WONDER WOMAN MAY GET THEIR OWN SPINOFF (Photo by Clay Enos. ©Warner Bros.)Following the box office success last year of Aquaman, it was surprisingly revealed that an underwater horror movie called The Trench was being planned as an Aquaman spinoff (separate from Aquaman 2, which is scheduled fro release on 12/16/2022). This week, director Patty Jenkins revealed that she also has ideas about a Wonder Woman spinoff, but this one is arguably more directly related to the first movie in particular. Discussing next year s Wonder Woman 1984, Jenkins said that the premise for Wonder Woman 3 is already known, and that the third movie is in the early stages of development along with a spinoff movie for The Amazons. Jenkins did not specify which Amazons would be the stars of such a movie, but one has to wonder if they wouldn t include characters like Robin Wright s Antiope or Lisa Loven Kongsli s Menalippe, whose roles in Wonder Woman hinted at other stories featuring them as the main focus. Other characters with Amazon connections who might warrant their own movie include Artemis and Wonder Girl, AKA Donna Troy.2. SHAZAM! 2 TO TAKE ON BLACK PANTHER 2 AND SPIDER-VERSE 2 IN 2022(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)There will obviously be superhero movies in 2020 (Birds of Prey, Black Widow, Wonder Woman 1984, Morbius, The Eternals, Venom 2), but it may seem like a quiet respite from the genre when you consider what s coming in 2021 and 2022. That latter year is still relatively far off, so studios are still just starting to announce their plans, but going into this week, we knew about Aquaman 2 (12/16/2022), Black Panther II (5/6/2022), DC Super Pets (5/20/2022), and the animated sequel to  Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (4/8/2022), to which Warner Bros. and DC have added two more. Let s start with the sequel to this year s Shazam! (Certified Fresh at 90%), which Warner Bros. has officially scheduled for release on April 1st, 2022. Going back to two of those Marvel-related movies, please take note that Shazam! 2 is being positioned just a week before the Spider-Verse sequel, and a little over a month before Black Panther 2, which means Zachary Levi will quickly have fierce competition from Marvel and/or Sony. The other movie to keep in mind here is Dwayne Johnson s Black Adam, which will come out on December 22, 2021, and which is directly related to the Shazam! mythos (since Black Adam is one of Shazam s arch-nemeses). In related speculation, Marvel hasn t yet scheduled Captain Marvel 2, but it might be in 2022 or 2023.3. YOU D THINK THE FLASH COULD ARRIVE AT THE MOVIES FASTER THAN 2022(Photo by Warner Bros.)The other DC Comics superhero movie that Warner Bros. scheduled for 2022 this week is actually one of the projects that they first announced at a big press conference back in 2014. Many of those movies did in fact get made (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!), but one of them that hasn t yet is The Flash, starring Ezra Miller. That s partly because directors have come and gone, and the rumored premise has shifted in those years two (including the period when it was subtitled The Flash: Flashpoint). The attached director now is Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT: Chapter Two), and Ezra Miller is still expected to star in the movie as well. The Flash is now scheduled for release on July 1st, 2022, which makes it the second DC Comics movie of that summer, after the animated kids movie DC Super Pets (5/20/2022), featuring such four-legged super sidekicks as Ace the Bat-Hound, Krypto the Super-Dog, and Streaky the Super-Cat.4. LONG-AWAITED JOHN BELUSHI BIOPIC FINALLY FINDS ITS STAR (Photo by Richard E. Aaron/Getty Images)In 1989, future The Shield star Michael Chiklis starred in Wired, an adaptation of the best-selling book by Bob Woodward about Saturday Night Live star John Belushi s battles with drug addiction that ultimately led to his death in 1982. Although ostensibly about John Belushi, that movie however had an otherwise narrow focus on just one aspect of Belushi s life, so it arguably isn t a true John Belushi biopic.  However, one has been in development for several years (since 2013), and is now finally moving forward as an independent production. One has to presume that a major obstacle has been in finding an actor who can credibly portray John Belushi (sort of the point, one would presume) and the role has finally gone to Broadway star Alex Brightman, who will soon wrap up his run as Beetlejuice in June. Belushi will be directed by David Frankel, whose most famous movie was probably 2006 s The Devil Wears Prada (Certified Fresh at 75%), itself based on a roman à clef widely believed to be inspired by Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Amazon extends its Tom Clancy Universe this month with the release of Without Remorse, which follows the story of US Navy Seal John Kelly who’s out for vengeance when his pregnant wife is murdered by Russian assassins. The movie stars – and is produced by – Michael B. Jordan, who says he “trained relentlessly” for its combustive action sequences, which were more demanding than even his work in Creed and Black Panther. Jordan also opened up to Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley about stepping into a producer role and his introduction to Clancy’s work via the video game Rainbow Six. Plus, Coley spoke with co-stars Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lauren London, and director Stefano Sollima about bringing their fresh take on Clancy’s characters to the screen, working with Jordan, and who in the world they’d choose to spy on if given the opportunity. Wanna know who wants to get the lowdown on Michelle Obama’s morning routine – and who would spy on themselves? Ghcxuf (Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Claudette Barius.)The 41st annual Sundance Film Festival is set to kick off next Thursday. Nestled right in the midst of 2018 awards season – the one that s happening now, in 2019! – Sundance acts as the unofficial start of the indie season. The Park City, Utah festival, which comes several months ahead of the other major festivals, is still the place for high-dollar film acquisitions. Last year it was where first we spotted Hereditary star Toni Collette s terrifying face contortions, where Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs socially conscious buddy dramedy Blindspotting gave us so much to ponder between the laughs, and where John Cho s turn as a desperate father in Searching broke our collective hearts and minds. Other 2018 favorites Eighth Grade, Won t You Be My Neighbor?, and Leave No Trace also got their starts at Sundance.Though the corporate influence is strong in Park City and the festival is far removed from the fall festival schedule, Sundance at its core remains unchanged: a discovery festival for independent cinema and the filmmakers who craft it. Who will break out of the pack this year? These are our picks for the can t-miss films of Sundance 2019 and why we are so excited to catch them. The Nightingale (2018) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Kasia Ladczuk. )Director and screenwriter: Jennifer KentCast: Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, Baykali Ganambarr, Damon Herriman, Harry Greenwood, Ewen LeslieIt s 1825. Colonial Australia. Irish convict Clare chases a British officer through the Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for the violent act he committed against her family. On the way, she enlists the services of Indigenous tracker Billy, who is marked by his own trauma. Why we want to see it: Kent burst onto the scene with her horror hit The Babadook at Sundance 2014 and has been in high demand ever since. In her follow-up to her meme-starting smash, she puts another twist on genre filmmaking with what looks to be a case of Logan meets Pride and Prejudice. Early reviews from the Venice Film Festival last year suggest the Aussie director has once again staked her claim as a force to reckoned with in auteur horror.Share (2019) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Josh Johnson.)Director and screenwriter: Pippa BiancoCast: Rhianne Barreto, Charlie Plummer, Poorna Jagannathan, J.C. MacKenzie, Nick Galitzine, Lovie SimoneThis latest social-media-as-nightmare tale, developed by A24, has us intrigued. After discovering a disturbing video from a night she doesn’t remember, teenager Mandy must try to figure out what happened and how to navigate the escalating fallout. Why we want to see it: Charlie Plummer melted his way into our hearts last year with Lean on Pete, and with his work in that film as well as All the Money in the World and King Jack it s hard to believe he s just 19. Plummer s joined by newcomer Barreto, who will play the lead. Writer-director Pippa Bianco s film is a feature-length take on her award-winning short from last year s Cannes Film Festival, and has all the makings of a stellar debut.Paddleton (2019) 89%Director and screenwriter: Alex LehmannCast: Mark Duplass, Ray Romano, Ravi Patel, Christine WoodsAn unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors takes an emotional turn when the younger man is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Why we want to see it: The Duplass Brothers return to Sundance with this film they co-produced. A trailer released early this month shows Romano and Duplass easy chemistry. We fully expect to be laughing through the tears on this one, which will premiere on Netflix February 22.Apollo 11 (2019) 99%Director: Todd Douglas MillerHot on the heels of First Man, Sundance will screen this fully archival reconstruction of humanity’s first successful trip to the moon, with never-before-seen 70mm footage and never-before-heard audio from the mission. Why we want to see it: After Damien Chazelle s First Man last year, it might be hard to get our engine going about another Apollo mission movie. But Miller s archival doc boasts a completely new take with never-before-seen and fully restored footage of the voyage. And if Miller s last documentary, Dinosaur 13 (72% on the Tomatometer), is anything to go by, this will be a gripping ride. NASA Nerds: prepare to get a little hot under the collar.Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) 88%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Jon Pack.)Director and screenwriter: Paul Downs ColaizzoCast: Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, Micah Stock, Alice LeeIn a story inspired by writer and director Colaizzo s real-life friend, we follow a hard-partying New York City twentysomething as she decides to do the New York Marathon. Why we want to see it: Actor and musician Utkarsh Ambudkar had just one scene in last year s opening-night film Blindspotting, and he managed to almost run away with the film. We re excited whenever we see his name in the cast list. He will have some competition on the scene-stealing front in this comedy, though, with Get Out breakout star Lil Rel Howery in a supporting role and the hilarious Jillian Bell (Workaholics) playing the title marathoner. The Death of Dick Long (2019) 74%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute )Director: Daniel ScheinertScreenwriter: Billy ChewCast: Michael Abbott Jr., Virginia Newcomb, Andre Hyland, Sarah Baker, Jess WeixlerThe Dick of the title is dead, and Zeke and Earl don t want anybody finding out how. That s going to be tough – in small-town Alabama, it s hard to keep a secret. Why we want to see it: Director Scheinert s last film, Swiss Army Man (71% on the Tomatometer), showed he knew a thing or two about drawing outrageous laughs from dead bodies. That pedigree, plus the promise of a backwoods Alabama caper, has us more than interested.Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019) 54%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Brian Douglas.)Director: Joe BerlingerScreenwriter: Michael WerwieCast: Zac Efron, Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, Jim ParsonsA new twist on the serial killer genre, Extremely Wicked takes a girlfriend s-eye–view of the crimes of Ted Bundy, following the woman who stood by his side and refused to believe the truth for years. Why we want to see it: Efron looks unnervingly like Bundy in a still photo from this biopic about the notorious murderer. Our nation s most charming serial killer played by our internet boyfriend? A strange pairing perhaps, but it could be like popcorn and chocolate – you don t know how good it is until you try them together. Director Berlinger has made a number of TV docuseries, many of which focus on famous murders, so he knows the territory. The Farewell (2019) 97%(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Director and screenwriter: Lulu WangCast: Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhao Shuzhen, Lu Hong, Jiang YongboA Chinese-American woman returns to China when she learns he grandmother is dying. She struggles with her family s choice to keep the terminal diagnosis a secret from her grandmother as the family prepares an impromptu wedding to bring everyone together for one last time. Why we want to see it: Fresh off the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina heads to Sundance with two titles: The Farewell and Paradise Hills. The Farewell will offer our first look at the comedienne s dramatic chops; a strong showing could signal another blockbuster year for the actress who has just been cast in the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.Honey Boy (2019) 94%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Natasha Braier.)Director: Alma Har elScreenwriter: Shia LaBeoufCast: Shia LaBeouf, Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe, Maika MonroeA child TV star and his heavy-drinking ex-rodeo clown father try to mend their strained relationship. Why we want to see it: Every few years or so we seem to find LaBeouf at the center of something fascinating: The I m not famous bag on his head, the art installations, the Just Do it meme, Sia s Elastic Heart video, that time he invited fans to watch all his movies with him, and whatever he was saying about those seagulls. The semi-autobiographical Honey Boy, which he wrote and stars in, may give us insight into one of Hollywood s more eccentric stars. Perennial indie favorite Lucas Hedges co-stars, along with Noah Jupe, who you might recall as the young boy in A Quiet Place.Late Night (2019) 79%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Emily Aragones.)Director: Nisha GanatraScr 😈😈

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Scorsese s Killers of the Flower Moon, Flash Gordon, and the Hunger Games prequel. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI S ANIMATED FLASH GORDON WILL BE LIVE ACTION INSTEAD(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images)In the summer of 2019, we first learned that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows) had been hired to write and eventually direct an animated adaptation of the classic serial sci-fi hero Flash Gordon. This week, producer John Davis was doing the PR rounds to promote Jungle Cruise, and he gave a surprising Flash Gordon update that might actually raise the reboot s profile considerably: Instead of being an animated feature as originally planned, Taika Waititi s Flash Gordon will be live action. Although there were three Flash Gordon serials from 1936 to 1940, the character has only headlined one live-action feature film in the 80 years since, which was the 1980 Flash Gordon (Certified Fresh at 83%), starring Sam Jones with a soundtrack by Queen. We can probably expect to wait a few years for Waititi s film, however, as he also has Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), the soccer movie Next Goal Wins, We re Wolves (a mockumentary about werewolves), and his untitled Star Wars movie all currently in the works.Other Top Headlines1. BRENDAN FRASER JOINS MARTIN SCORSESE S KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Lionsgate)Brendan Fraser recently wrapped filming of Darren Aronofsky s The Whale, in which he will play a 600 lb. man seeking to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (played by Sadie Sink from Stranger Things). Now, Fraser is quickly moving from working with one acclaimed director to another, as he has joined the cast of Killers of the Flower Moon, the next film from Martin Scorsese. Fraser will play lawyer W.S. Hamilton in the Apple TV+ and Paramount Pictures feature film, which is based on the true crime story originally depicted in the nonfiction book of the same title by David Grann. Fraser joins a cast that includes Jesse Plemons (in a lead role) and frequent Scorsese collaborators (and Academy Award winners) Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Brendan Fraser has also joined the cast of Brothers, the next movie from director Max Barbakow (Palm Springs, Certified Fresh at 95%).2. JOHN WICK DIRECTOR CHAD STAHELSKI TAKING ON ASSASSIN NOVEL SHIBUMI (Photo by Isa Foltin/Getty Images)Authors nowadays just don t have cool pen names as often as they used to. Trevanian was the nom de plume of an American writer who specialized in airport novels, the most famous of which was probably The Eiger Sanction, which was adapted as the eponymous 1975 assassin movie (Fresh at 68%) starring Clint Eastwood. Chad Stahelski is the stuntman-turned-director behind the John Wick franchise, which is also about a deadly assassin, so you can probably guess where this is going. Even as he s about to begin filming John Wick 4, Stahelski has started developing an adaptation of the 1979 Trevanian novel Shibumi, about an assassin who is recruited to take on a conspiracy of energy companies that secretly controls much of the western world. It s worth noting that Stahelski is accruing a large development slate, of which Shibumi is just the latest, so it will have to wait its turn alongside such projects as Ghost of Tsushima, Classified, Kill or Be Killed, and the Highlander reboot.3. HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)The Young Adult (YA) novel-based movie fad came and went so quickly that it might seem odd to realize that the very first installment of The Hunger Games (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out as recently as nine years ago, and the last movie was only six years ago. That four-film franchise was a huge financial boon to Lionsgate, which grossed nearly billion worldwide from it, but when it ended in 2015, it also left a big, blockbuster-sized hole for them to fill in their production calendar. Luckily for them, author Suzanne Collins published a prequel novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last year. During a quarterly earnings call this week, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake confirmed that filming of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is expected to start in the first half of 2022, aiming for a theatrical release in late 2023 or early 2024. The prequel will tell the story of the 18-year-old (future President) Coriolanus Snow as he gets his chance to be a mentor during the Tenth Hunger Games. Presumably, whoever lands the lead role will resemble a very young Donald Sutherland.4. NICHOLAS HOULT TO STAR AS CREEPY DRACULA HENCHMAN RENFIELD (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bram Stoker s Dracula has the distinction of being the most frequently adapted literary character in film (Sherlock Holmes is the most adapted human literary character). With that many movie versions of Dracula, there have also been dozens of portrayals of his insane, bug-munching human henchman Renfield, but usually as a supporting character. Always looking to continue their Universal Classic Monsters franchise, Universal Pictures is now developing a solo movie for Renfield, with Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class) attached to star. Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) will direct Renfield from a screenplay by Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley, based on an original screenplay by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible). Although no specific premise details have been revealed yet, the setting is believed to be in the modern day, not in the Victorian Era England of the original novel.5. SNL S COLIN JOST CO-WRITING A NEW TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES REBOOT (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a way more complicated history than the casual observer might expect (and it goes all the way back to their start as a grim and gritty Daredevil spoof indie comic book). Besides the first three live-action films, there was also an animated movie in 2007 and a pair of more recent live-action movies in 2014 and 2016 with the turtles as CGI characters (and that s without getting into all the TMNT movies that didn t happen). Last year, we first heard that Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg were developing a CGI reboot feature film with Nickelodeon, but as it turns out, that is now just one of two reboots being developed concurrently. Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost and his brother Casey Jost will also write a second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot for Paramount Pictures. The division between the two reboots seems to be that the Jost brothers are working on a version closer to the gritty comic book origins, while Seth Rogen s is more lighthearted like the 1980s animated TV series. The Jost brothers version will also probably come later than Seth Rogen s, which is currently scheduled for August 11, 2023.6. CHRONICLE SEQUEL FINALLY HAPPENING WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAST (Photo by Alan Markfield/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Up above, we touched upon the came-and-went YA novel adaptation fad, and another trend that has largely fallen out of vogue is the found footage genre first popularized by The Blair Witch Project. For a while, found footage was a lucrative format that gave Hollywood a few surprise hits (such as the Paranormal Activity franchise) and the 2012 superhero drama Chronicle (Certified Fresh at 85%). There was talk for years about a Chronicle sequel, but the personal developments for some of the creatives involved seemed to decrease the chances of that happening, to the point where director Josh Trank said in 2020 that he actively worked to prevent it. As it turns out, however, Jungle Cruise producer John Davis does indeed plan on moving forward with a Chronicle sequel, although it may be a very different film than was originally planned. This sequel will be set about 10 years after the original Chronicle (suggesting filming in 2022?) and will revolve around a group of female college students who discover that they are the next generation with super powers. Davis also did not clarify whether the found footage technique would be used for the Chronicle sequel.7. POPULAR SQUISHMALLOWS PILLOWS TO EXPAND INTO FILM, TV, AND GAMES(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Some trends blow up simply by being the right idea at the right time. Consider, for example, the case of the Squishmallows, an expansive line (1,000+) of character-themed huggable pillows that first launched in 2017 as sort of a cross between pillows, anime influences, and the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s. Squishmallows may have eventually become popular in any case, but their expansion may have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with people seeking something adorable to hug while stuck at home for months. Jazwares, the company behind Squishmallows, is seeking to build upon their newfound success by partnering with the powerful Creative Artists Agency (CAA). CAA will work with Jazware to push the Squishmallows franchise into film, TV, video games, publishing, and live touring. So that doesn t mean that there is a Squishmallows movie project in development just yet, but it certainly sounds like it s just a matter of time.On an Apple device?
