Hall) faking his death … and going off to work for a lumber company in the northwest.“You know what? Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime, and we didn t do it justice in the end, I think,” Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levin said during the network’s Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation on Tuesday. “And that has always been a burr under my saddle.”Hall also said viewers’ unhappiness with the original series was a big reason why he finally said yes to revisiting the role that earned him five Emmy nominations.“I think a lot of what was mystifying or dissatisfying to people is a lot of what creates the appetite that we re hopefully satisfying now,” Hall said during the New Blood TCA session. “The show did not end in a way that was definitive for people or gave anybody a sense of closure. We didn t hear from Dexter. He didn t say anything to us when the show ended, and I think it left audiences, if nothing else, (in) a sense of suspended animation. Yeah, I think a big part of our motivation was to definitively answer the question of what happened to this guy.”Levine said he thinks they nailed it this time. “We always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right,” he said. “I have to say, we finally got to a place that I am just – I can t wait to show it to you and the world. I think this is going to be (brilliant).”And we can confirm the limited series – or “special event series,” as the network is officially calling it – gets off to a good start. Picking up about a decade after Dexter went off to live his lumberjack life, in New Blood he’s now residing in a small town in upstate New York, going by the name Jim, and ingratiating himself with the townsfolk while he successfully resists the urges of his Dark Passenger.For a while, anyway … and that’s all we’ll say about that.The 10-episode event series was filmed in Massachusetts during the pandemic, with original series showrunner Clyde Phillips (who left the series before it ended) back on board, and is intended as a one-off. But would a great ratings performance for the show mean Dexter could become a regular visitor to the Showtime lineup?“You re way ahead of me,” Levine said. “I m trying to finish producing the special event series. Expectation is so high for it. And, again, the series is so special to our network and to me, that that s my focus right now. Let s make it great. The future will take care of itself.”Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime Nov. 7.More from Showtime: Your Honor Gets Surprise Second Season as the Ray Donovan Movie Lands a Date(ish)(Photo by Skip Bolen/Showtime) Though the finale of the Bryan Cranston thriller Your Honor was quite definitive, Showtime announced the limited series will return for a second season, after Cranston became intrigued with a storyline idea from writer and showrunner Peter Moffat. Levine said he is still “completely in the dark” about that idea, but Season 2 is a go anyway. The Ray Donovan movie that will wrap up that series after its abrupt cancelation with multiple storylines left dangling, is tentatively planned for a 2022 winter premiere. Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight return as Ray and Mickey, with most of the rest of the cast also return, according to Levine. The last five episodes of Billions Season 5 premiere Sept. 5, and Levine said despite their pandemic delay, they “come back just shot out of a cannon, and you are immediately thrown back into the story.” Season 6 is scheduled to premiere in January. Desus Mero was renewed for a fourth season. Levine said Showtime swapped a long-in-development Halo series for The Man Who Fell to Earth with Paramount+ because Halo was always “an odd fit” with Showtime’s drama-heavy lineup. John Carroll Lynch’s character didn’t make it out of Big Sky’s first season alive, but Lynch has been confirmed as a returning presence for Season 2. A rags to riches musical about a famed socialite who survived the sinking of the Titanic.Why you need to see it: Debbie Reynolds is widely known for her role in Singin in the Rain – and for being Carrie Fisher s mother. However, if you want to see the triple-threat performer at her peak you must watch The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Reynolds plays the famed Denver socialite from humble beginnings who survived a flood as an infant and then the Titanic disaster as an adult. The film follows a fictional Molly from her years as a saloon girl to her eventual fame as one of the richest women in the country. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the film was a hit for MGM, but is not as familiar to modern audiences as some of its glossy contemporaries. A musical biopic about Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, using his most famed literary creation as a plot device.Why you need to see it: It s hard to understand why the film adaptation of The Man from La Mancha starring Peter O Toole and Sophia Loren was not a critical and commercial hit. The original stage production was a smash on Broadway and took home five Tonys, but audiences were none-too-impressed with the film version: It failed to earn back its production budget and Time thought so little of it that the magazine didn t even publish a full review. Most of the problems with the adaptation are a result of its troubled production; a revolving door of directors and a heated debate over whether to make the film a musical at all crippled any effort to do justice to the source material. The dreary costumes, laughable sets, and indifferent cinematography may mar the overall product, but the music remains incredible, and Toole and Loren give it their all despite the challenges. Playing Carmen, Dandridge made her mark on history, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. Nominated for two Oscars, the film is well-known but not frequently watched. The performances, costumes, and rich Technicolor landscapes make watching the film a truly transformative experience that is almost enough to forgive the choice to dub the voices of famed singers in the production.Watch it if you like: Porgy Bess, Introducing Dorthy Dandridge, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, Rent, Les MiserablesWhere to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.The Wiz (1978) 42% What is it? Beloved in the Black community, the film was a commercial disaster despite starring icons Diana Ross, Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson, and Lena Horne. A modern imagining of Dorothy s trek along the yellow brick road – with music from Quincy Jones and Luther Vandross, direction by Sidney Lumet, and words by Joel Schumacher – the film was one of the most expensive musical productions ever made, and lost million at the box office. The film s popularity never matched its ambition outside of the Black community, where it s still lauded as a cult classic. And it s easy to see why when you watch it today. Stacked with stage powerhouses like Ethel Merman and Dan Dailey, as well as film stars like Mitzi Gaynor and Donald O Connor, the film was primarily a vehicle to showcase Marilyn Monroe, who had just married Joe DiMaggio and was one of the biggest names and box office draws in Hollywood. However, with a near two-hour runtime (a rare feat for musicals of that era), audiences found the film to be a little too Broadway and lacking in story. Monroe, who famously only took the role to ensure her casting in The Seven Year Itch, didn t shine in any of her musical numbers and was lambasted by critics. If there were any doubts remaining that Westworld got a reboot with its third season, the HBO sci-fi series smothered them with its Sunday finale, potentially losing a main character and almost all of the checks on the human extermination that is seen as inevitable in countless fictions about artificial intelligence.Spoiler alert: The following reveals plot details for the finale of season 3 of Westworld. Stop here if you haven t watched the episode.(Photo by HBO)Maeve’s (Thandie Newton) exercise of free will in choosing chaos and her adoption of Caleb (Aaron Paul), who was orphaned by Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) apparent deletion, stands as the last best hope for humanity. The Charlotte Hale–bot (Tessa Thompson) figures on the other side of the equation. Driven by a nihilistic streak, holding the reins of Host regeneration, and bent on revenge, Charlotte commanded — surely it wasn’t an original thought — the Man in Black Host (Ed Harris) to eliminate his human counterpart William in the post-credits scene, which also gave us a glimpse of the Host horde Charlotte is constructing. You too will be assimilated.For all of its reinvention, Westworld’s season 3 is Certified Fresh at 79%, with its first six episodes averaging 82%. The season fell victim to the Game of Thrones curse, however, with its final two episodes earning Rotten scores, and the finale, “Crisis Theory,” garnering the lowest episode score of the entire series.“Though the third season often succumbed to mission drift, the show did at least follow through on the likelihood that the cost of freedom would be oblivion. But the payoffs elsewhere were close to nonexistent,” Scott Tobias wrote for the New York Times.But Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibbard sees a silver lining: “Westworld season 3 ended in a rather Westworld-ian way: By hitting its narrative control-alt-delete keys all at the same time for a potential re-re-reboot of the story for next season.”The question now is what that re-re-reboot might entail. Evan Rachel Wood drove the past two seasons exquisitely as the Hostess with the most-est. Maybe this is just personal preference, but the idea that you can’t keep a good woman down holds a lot of appeal. She could be patched together from the pieces of her memory that she stashed in other Hosts. Or, given the data redundancies required in corporate life even now, it seems too simplistic to think that the Dolores on the slab under Rehoboam with her memories being systematically deleted represented the very last version of her consciousness. Surely, she was backed up to the Cloud.2. What Bernard Lowe Discovered in the Sublime(Photo by HBO)What does robot bliss look like? In season 2, we saw it as a human ideal: a bucolic dreamscape of rolling green vistas. In the post-credits scene, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) returned to the human reality covered in dust, and season 4 will tell us if that was a time-jump and those layers of dirt represented years having passed or a nearer future in which the destruction of the first human exterminations has begun. Before Bernard went under, Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) — no doubt now moldy in the bathtub — asked him what he hoped to find in the Sublime. An answer, Bernard replied, to what comes after the end of the world. But does he mean in the physical world or in the Sublime?3. Maeve and Caleb: Is There a Place for Them? (Photo by HBO)Are Maeve and Caleb now BFFs? Or has she simply committed herself to his well-being? At the end of the finale, Maeve was shining her maternal light on him hard. Are you ready, darling? she purred. He was skeptical: For what? She: This is the new world, and in this world, you can be whoever the f you want. Skyscrapers burned in the background. This story is just beginning. Maeve embraced Dolores plan in the end — or, at least, didn t stand in the way of it — and protected Caleb by turning on Rehoboam-puppet Serac (Vincent Cassel). The question is: To what end? If Maeve drank Dolores Kool-Aid, will she promote Caleb as the leader of the future s human resistance? Does she even know what Hale-bot has in the works? Season 4 no doubt will feature Maeve wrestling with the human cause and her own interests.4. Charlotte Heading Up Skynet(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Crispy Charlotte told Dolores Prime that, no, she s not mad; she s just hell-bent on securing the Hosts place on Earth. Now that she s replaced white-straightjacket human William with Man in Black Host William, she has a ruthless robot general to marshal her robot army. Or not. One thing is for certain: Charlotte (Dolores-lite) will be responsible for the mass casualty events promised by Rehoboam s predictions: at 1–3 years, 6–10 years, and 12–16 years, with a population collapse at 23 years and the end of human civilization in 50–125 years. Do fans want to see what that 50–125 year period will look like? Will Delos Inc. be renamed Skynet ?5. Artificial Intelligence Becoming Aware of Its Own Emotional Intelligence(Photo by HBO)During a finale fight with Maeve, Dolores revealed that she was the first of their kind who worked — that, like Adam and Eve, the others were made from her metaphorical rib bone. Perhaps that is why Dolores is so ahead of the curve, forging a path over the course of the series from puppet, unaware of the strings controlling her, to vigilante, seeking violent retribution for the crimes against her, to martyr, sacrificing herself for the (possible) good of the many. Westworld viewers need to see Charlotte and her thugs struggle toward the last part of that existential crisis as the war for self-determination between humans and robots rages.What do you think Westworld has in store in season 4? But I was pretty young, and so I just liked the character, and I thought it was fun, the actor and executive producer told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles on Monday. I reread it when we were sent the scripts to do, and I hadn’t read it in — you know, high school was 15 years ago — and I hadn’t read it in a long time. So it was really fun and exciting to go back and read and understand why this book lasted and stands the test of time.”Joseph Heller’s 1961 novel is told in a non-chronological way, but the series streamlines the narrative to flow in a way that might be easier for audiences to consume.“We really hope that we’ve retained the kaleidoscopic madness of the novel; but, no, the show really flows through [main character] Yossarian’s perspective,” Davies said. “The world is in chaos around him, but we honed in on Yossarian’s character. I mean, the novel does do that, too, but the novel jumps all over the place and spends a lot of time on other characters at different times. But there’s barely a single scene in the entire six hours in which Chris [Abbott, star] is not either in it or very close by implicitly.”Added Clooney, “It’s a lot more linear than the book, for sure.”The production flew two authentic B-25 bomber planes from the U.S. to where they filmed in Sardinia, which required lots of planning.“They can go about five hours in the air and they don’t have heating so they’re wearing parkas and they’ve got oxygen masks, Clooney, who plays Scheisskopf, explained. And they flew — because you can’t fly over the whole ocean; they had to fly up past Greenland and bounce back all the way — seven stops to get there. So it’s pretty interesting, when they showed up, we were all standing out on the tarmac cheering.”It might’ve been a huge effort, but it also helped the stars get into character.“I didn’t actually fly in them because that would be extremely dangerous, Abbott said. But even just to ride it at about one mile an hour down a runway was scary enough. …Being in that nose cone [is] a vulnerable place. It gets really hot. It’s glass and it’s sunny. So it adds heat to the whole situation. It’s very small. It’s claustrophobic. …You’re reminded not how basic it is, but you feel like you’re driving an old Chevy in a weird way. It’s not as computerized as you would think it is. It’s very mechanical. Everything’s very tangible and beautiful also.”The military uniforms also helped establish the characters.“You feel an incredible sense of responsibility to generations, particularly that generation considered the Greatest Generation. I will say that as an actor in general — with the exception of the Batsuit — any time you put on a costume it does help you get into character considerably. While it does put spirituality into the context of the modern world, it’s not a religious satire“I wouldn’t describe our show as religious satire. It’s more of an existential show. It’s closer to something like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,” creator Simon Rich said. “It is more about what it means to be a human being on Earth. It was always my hope to try to portray a vision of heaven that’s consistent with our experience of being on this planet, and if you walk around on this planet it sometimes feels like things happen randomly and irrationally and unfairly and horribly all of the time, and so I thought, well, maybe one explanation for that would be that the guy upstairs is in the midst of a full-on midlife crisis, and the people who work for him are in a system that is hopelessly mismanaged at every single level. So that was kind of the genesis of it.“In our show, God is the founder and CEO of Heaven, Inc. and he is very human, Rich continued. He has real flaws. He started Earth with a lot of good intentions and, unfortunately, the project just got way too hard for him to manage.”Rich described the series as “a cross between the Old Testament and Goonies,” but even with a fun, underdog bent, it is till serious subject matter. And that has inspired its stars to think a lot more about their own mortality.“I think about it constantly anyway,” Radcliffe said. “I think I’m quite morbid so I often do. And I think that this is such a fun world that Simon’s created. But that was the plan all along, considering Bryant’s day job.“I have a full-time job at SNL, and so we had this little window of my summer, basically, to write and shoot the whole thing. And there was truly no more time before I had to go back to New York,” Bryant explained. “So that’s why it’s six, but we really like it because it sort of became this tight, little character study of these six episodes.”The series deals with twentysomething Annie (Bryant) and her experiences as a fat woman living in Portland, Oregon. She’s not based on Bryant, nor is she based on West (though the show is based on some of West’s experiences), but she might be like one of Bryant’s SNL characters.“I think she’s a lot like Sarah Huckabee Sanders,” Bryant quipped. “No … I didn’t see a lot of fat women on television when I was growing up, and I always craved that. And so when I read Lindy’s book, there were so many things in there that I identified with, particularly the idea that the whole world is telling you you’re wrong for existing in the way that you are, even if you don’t feel that way, and you feel like, ‘I have something to offer this world, and why do I have to do it in a size 2 package?’ And I think that part of the book resonated with me so deeply that when I heard Elizabeth [Banks, executive producer] optioned it, I was like, ‘What are they making? I’ll do anything to get in there.’“I certainly think, in just the nature of a writers’ room, we all put ourselves into this character, she continued. And I think some of Annie’s apologetic nature is certainly maybe more my deal than Lindy’s, and trying to just be overly sweet to hide. Some of those things that we put into the show, I think, are maybe some of my characterization. She’s not exactly me, she’s not exactly Lindy. She’s someone else, and I think that’s healthy.”Patricia Arquette’s Transformation in The Act Is Just as Big as Escape At DannemoraPatricia Arquette’s turn as a homely prison guard in Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora required an extreme physical transformation, but instead of taking a job that required a lot less time in the makeup chair, she went immediately to Hulu’s new anthology series The Act. The Dannemora Golden Globe winner plays a mother who suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy and poisons her daughter, another extremely emotionally and physically demanding role. The season is based on Michelle Dean’s Buzzfeed News article Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered,” a case that was profiled in 2017’s HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.“I had always been fascinated by this story of Munchausen by proxy, and Michelle had done this in-depth reporting and had a lot of information about this. I like this distorted love affair, but I am a little exhausted of playing crazy women,” Arquette said.Like her Dannemora character, Arquette’s Dee Dee thinks that she’s doing the right thing. That’s just one commonality between the two characters.“I think in general the choices that people and characters make they do because they have a reason to do it, and they create a logic that makes sense for them,” she said. “Whether people think they’re good people or bad people, or their choices are good choices or bad choices, they have a whole story supporting the reason they make the choice.”Munchausen by proxy is something that has always fascinated Arquette, and it’s something that Dean, who co-created the series with Nick Antosca, learned a lot about in her research for her story.“In the [research] you’ll find mentions of the idea that there was a spike in Munchausen once the Internet came around and people could look up reams of medical information at home in front of the television. And I think we’ve all had that experience where you’re having an ache or a pain, and you go on WebMD and you think, ‘Oh, I have cancer,’” she said. “And I think that’s been a curse on doctors. I do think that there is that spike that happened around the Internet. In terms of is there more ambient paranoia in the culture about illness and about environmental factors that might cause illness in children? Yes. I do think that’s one thing that makes it hard for medical professionals to sort a mom with Munchausen out from a mom who really is genuinely just concerned about a symptom that their child has and that they’ve observed.”Ramy Youssef Wants His Show, Ramy, to Portray a Real-Life Muslim Experience(Photo by Matthias Clamer/Hulu)Stand-up comedian Ramy Youssef, star and creator of Hulu’s new comedy Ramy, never saw his life experience portrayed on screen. Most stories about first-generation Americans would feature children at odds with their parents’ cultures.“The tension is always, ‘I don’t want to be like you,’ or, ‘I wish I was my white friends,’ and I never really related to that. I always really felt this connection to my culture, to my faith, and the tension in my life has always been how do I hold on to both things? Where does it feel like when you want to go to Mecca, and you also want to go to Burning Man? I’ve never seen that played out,” he said. “It’s always just like either/or, you’re watching people try to erase their history.”Then there’s the fact that most portrayals of Muslims in Western media have not been the kindest — “because we’re so underrepresented when people see us, we’re constantly trying to apologize or over-prove and show that we’re good,” Youssef said — that has made it difficult for Muslim creators to portray a simple, real-life version of their own life experience.“I just want to show that we’re human,” he said. “I think that what this show does for me is it actually leads with showing Muslims who have flaws, and [are] sitting in our problems. I think what really shows that someone’s good is that they’re a human being, and they’re really dealing with real things, and that’s what I think this show is doing for the first time for Muslims. It’s just showing us not being afraid to show us in all of our problems, and it’s not an apology, and it’s just this, these are things we’re dealing with, and what we’re dealing with might also be what you’re dealing with, too.”While Youssef hopes his series can enlighten viewers about the Muslim-American experience, he is quick to note that his show does not speak for all Muslims.“There are Muslims who will watch this and [say] that’s not my experience, and I think that’s great because I think we all have a different way that we come at it. But I do think that everyone will relate to the struggles that the characters go through, and I think that’s what we really work hard to create.”This is the third series that executive producer Jerrod Carmichael (The Carmichael Show) has worked on starring a comedian and loosely based on his life (his own, his Carmichael costar Lil Rel Howery’s Rel, and now Ramy), and he said that working on his colleagues’ shows gives him the opportunity to help them refine their perspectives.“As a stand-up comedian, a lot of times your perspective is centered on yourself, and you see things through your worldview, and every story is told just through you, and it really is just finding other ways into that perspective and finding other perspectives to attack that,” he explained, later adding, “It’s just a little bit beyond your perspective — because it’s so singular, and while a show that has other characters in it inherently is going to have something that goes against the way you think or the way that you’ve approached things. So I think just getting past that barrier that is the biggest thing.”Youssef and Carmichael met in the Los Angeles stand-up comedy scene, but they didn’t initially bond over comedy. They bonded because they were both “people in L.A. and Hollywood who believed in God,” Youssef explained. That helped provide context for the show that eventually became Ramy. “The way we approach it and the way that it is a part of our lives is very much the way that we struggle with it in the show,” Youssef said.
Sixth time is the charm for the Transformers franchise, as Bumblebee looks to be the first Fresh installment in the series. Starting with the 2007 original, the Michael Bay-helmed series has only managed Rotten Tomatometer scores, with an average of 29%. Now, with a change in director and nostalgic setting, the new prequel is a wholly enjoyable throwback, according to the first wave of reviews – as of Monday morning, it was at 95% on the Tomatometer with 21 reviews logged. Not everyone agrees this is the best Transformers movie ever, since the first one has its fans, but there aren’t really any complaints here. Jaws was the first blockbuster, but Jaws 2 was briefly the highest-grossing sequel of all time until Rocky II bested it the following year. Part of the film’s success likely has to do with one of the greatest taglines of all time — “Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water” — the work of famed and innovative producer Andrew J. Kuehn.The following year, Alien came around with one of the other great taglines in movie history, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” Neither of these movies had real-world promotional activations, but they were united in memorable taglines that, thanks to their use of the second-person, made would-be viewers feel part of the cinematic horrors to come.Did it work? As mentioned, Jaws 2 was a huge success, pulling in 8 million. Alien’s box office figure is a little disputed, as some creative Hollywood accounting originally recorded the film as a loss for Fox, but it went on to spawn an iconic, acclaimed sci-fi horror series. And, of course, those two taglines are now forever seared into the public consciousness.Deadpool (2016) 85% Studio: 20th Century FoxWhy you remember it: Because Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool.Deadpool is known as the Merc with a Mouth, and the film’s promotional team sure did have a lot to say about the film. There was so much marketing, and all of it projected an irreverent, slightly naughty sense of fun. There were parody posters, custom emojis, a feud with Wolverine (and Hugh Jackman), a costume reveal via faux-nude spread, and a flaming bag of poop yule log, to name just a few campaign highlights. Then there was Reynolds, who, as the person most responsible for making Deadpool happen, projected his passion for the wise-cracking hero and modeled his own social presence after the Merc.Two years after Deadpool was released, Reynolds and the Fox marketing team went even harder with the promotion of Deadpool 2, taking over the DVD covers of other popular movies at Walmart and handling Stephen Colbert s late-night monologue duties, before going further yet for in its meta promotion of Once Upon a Deadpool. The marketing behind the franchise is now officially one of the reasons we look forward to another Deadpool movie.Did it work? Deadpool made 5 million at the box office and became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. Not bad for a superhero movie.The Social Network (2010) 96% Studio: Columbia PicturesWhy you remember it: Because “you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”David Fincher’s moody bio-pic about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is really an exceptional villain origin story, and the marketing for the film made that clear. The first trailer is scored to a haunting cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” as sung by a children’s choir, illustrating how there was something unsettling behind all this “friending.” Then there’s the poster, which features Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) looking at the viewer from the shadows, his face obscured by the memorable and ominous tagline in a crisp Futura font. Both the “choral cover of pop song” and “poster with words on a face” would go on to be often-imitated promotional tropes, but they were just the Google Plus to The Social Network’s Facebook.Did it work? The Social Network made 4.9 million and was nominated for or won a host of major awards. Plus, Zuckerberg had some qualms with the movie – so that s a success.Psycho (1960) 96% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because of the secrecy and Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful set tour.Modern moviegoers who were too young to remember seeing Psycho in theaters probably remember Hitchcock’s iconic slasher for the famous shower scene. Hitchcock knew that would be the case. Movie trailers weren’t what they were back then — the idea of multi-level movie marketing as we know it today didn’t really emerge until the late 90s. But, Hitchcock was the master of suspense, and he knew how to get an audience shaking with curiosity and anticipation. The trailer for Psycho featured Hitchcock giving a tour of the Bates Motel, offering gory hints of what horrors might have happened there but stopping just short of giving anything away. That, along with a campaign to keep the shocking twist in the movie a secret – which went so far as preventing Paramount Studio execs from reading the script – had audiences eager to see what happened.Did it work? Psycho cost about 0,000 to make and made more than million during its initial release — and this is in 1960s dollars! It was a huge hit, went on to enjoy multiple theatrical reissues, and is generally regarded as a landmark horror movie. Borat wasn’t a new creation, as Cohen’s character had been on the Da Ali G Show for years, but he wasn’t widely known. That let Cohen dupe the movie’s subjects — as well as many would-be ticket-buyers – into thinking that this kooky Borat character might be on the level.Did it work? Borat made 2 million at the box office, much to Kazakhstan’s chagrin.Cloverfield (2008) 78% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because of all the rampant speculation about the top-secret mystery plot.A good marketing campaign doesn’t give everything away, it just teases some of the best stuff so that moviegoers are excited to see the rest. Cloverfield’s marketing was so memorable because it gave, well, essentially nothing away. The first trailer, which came by surprise ahead of Transformers screenings, didn’t even include the movie’s title or any plot details. This, along with some innovative virtual tie-ins (shout-out to MySpace), had fans wondering what it might be. A Lost movie? A Godzilla film? An anime adaptation? Something new?Did it work? Like The Blair Witch Project, which pioneered this type of hype-building mystery promotion, Cloverfield was a hit. The film made 0.8 million against a budget of million, and spawned a whole franchise/ universe of sci-fi films united mostly by viral marketing, though none were as successful as the original.Inception (2010) 87% (Photo by @ Warner Bros. To get people excited about an unknown quantity, the studio banked on Christopher Nolan’s post-Dark Knight appeal and made an online viral game involving the spinning top that diehard fans tried to solve. The game unlocked the official trailer, and that was a great piece of advertising too, in no small part because of the booming Inception sound that rightfully became a meme.Did it work? PicturesWhy you remember it: Because you solved an interactive mystery across a virtual Gotham City, and Heath Ledger’s untimely death.The heroes of DC Comics save the day in fictional cities, like Metropolis. But, to promote the second (and best) of Christopher Nolan’s three Batman movies, the alternate reality game company 42 Entertainment made Gotham City real. Using websites like WhySoSerious.com, fake Gothamite newspapers, and Harvey Dent campaign materials, 42 Entertainment sent fans on a scavenger hunt all over the web and the physical United States — starting with San Diego’s Comic-Con, where one reward was the first image of the movie s Joker. It gave fans a tantalizing glimpse of the drama to come, and let them feel like the Batman, the World’s Greatest Detective, himself. Add to that the tragedy of Heath Ledger’s untimely death ahead of the premiere of his incredible performance as the Joker, and you’ve got a super-powered level of expectations.Did it work? The Dark Knight made over billion at the box office and was popular enough to change the way the Academy Awards work.Paranormal Activity (2007) 83% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because you had to demand it.Paranormal Activity was an extremely inexpensive movie, one that seemed destined for a modest indie release and perhaps a chance at becoming a cult classic. But, the marketing team at Paramount had the bright idea of democratizing horror. Trailers were released featuring night-vision footage of shocked and delighted viewing audiences and promising a scary theater experience; would-be moviegoers had to vote on a website, hoping that there would be enough fan demand for Paramount to bring the film to their city or town. The website, which was made with the user-driven event calendar company Eventful’s help, added a sense of urgency and participation in what otherwise might have just been an overlooked found-footage flick.Did it work? Paranormal Activity cost just ,000 to make, and it made more than 3 million at the box office. It is, by most accounts, the most profitable movie ever made.The Blair Witch Project (1999) 86% Studio: Artisan EntertainmentWhy you remember it: Because you thought it was real.Without The Blair Witch Project’s marketing, there would be no Cloverfield, no Inception, and essentially no viral movie marketing as we know it today. In the early days of the internet, Artisan Entertainment’s scrappy online team created a website and surrounding hype campaign that claimed the story of the Blair Witch was true. There were interviews with the “missing” characters’ parents and backstories from investigators trying to solve this “true” story. In the real world, missing posters went up around colleges and at film festivals. Because of all the marketing, The Blair Witch Project wasn’t just a low-budget indie horror flick — it was a real, ongoing mystery. Moviegoers and internet users have gotten more media-savvy, so this feat likely won’t be equaled, but The Blair Witch Project was the perfect storm, a way to use technology, advertising, and psychology to turn “based upon a true story” into box office gold.Did it work? The Blair Witch Project made 8,639,099, which is more than 4,000 times what it cost to make the movie. Drogon chose not to burn Jon Snow, despite the fact that he killed its mother. Book readers will love that touch.The critics are still weighing in with their verdict on “The Iron Throne,” but an early count of reviews, shows them split roughly down the middle, which gave the series finale an early Rotten score. (We should know in the next 24 hours where the score will settle.)Until then, let’s look at some of the biggest moments of the episode.1. Tyrion Digs Out Cersei and Jaime(Photo by HBO)Despite actress Lena Headey’s Instagram goodbye last week, we were unable to believe Cersei and Jaime were dead until Tyrion dug them out of the rubble on Sunday night.The dead lovers are entwined and still beautiful in death. Considering that they were crushed by the Red Keep, that is something.2. Daenerys “Break the Wheel” Speech(Photo by HBO)It just got all Hunger Games up in here. The scene has a fascist aesthetic – very Triumph of the Will, the 1935 Nazi propaganda film directed by Leni Riefenstahl. Or – another way of looking at it – like any Star Wars Stormtrooper assembly ever.The Mother of Dragons first thanks her Dothraki bloodriders for defeating the men in the iron suits, tearing down their stone houses, and delivering the Seven Kingdoms to her. She names Grey Worm the Master of War.(Photo by HBO)She addresses the Unsullied in Old Valyrian, congratulating them on being “liberators.” One person in the audience who may understand her is Arya, and she does not look happy.Tyrion sidles up to Daenerys, who accuses him of treason. He throws down his Hand of the Queen pin, and she promptly has him detained.Arya sneaks up on Jon: “You’ll always be a threat to her. I know a killer when I see one.”3. Tyrion and Jon Come to an Undertanding(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion argues that Daenerys has gone beyond her initial purpose, now intending to recut the world under her rule.“Love is more powerful than reason,” Tyrion says.“Love is the death of duty,” Jon says, quoting Maester Aemon.“You are the shield that guards the realms of men,” Tyrion reminds Jon. “Who is the greatest threat to the people now? … Do you think I’m the last man she’ll execute? Who is more dangerous than the rightful heir to the Iron Throne?”The clincher? Tyrion reminds Jon that Sansa and Arya won’t bend the knee.4. Jon Kills Daenerys(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)First, Drogon emerging from under a pile of ash to greet/inspect Jon was spectacular – the effects are, of course, perfect this episode.Daenerys lives the moment she dreamed about: her death.Jon begs for mercy for Tyrion and the people who followed Cersei, but Daenerys refuses, painting a picture of an entirely new world order: “I know what is good. And so do you.”He does.(Photo by HBO)After her pitch/proposal, she and Jon kiss.“You are my queen – now and always,” he says, as he stabs her.Be comforted: Drogo and Daenerys’ son are waiting for her.5. Drogon Melts the Iron Throne(Photo by HBO)Drogon senses something is amiss and touches down behind Jon. The dragon grieving for his mother is both fearsome and moving. At his full height, he resembles Maleficent in Disney classic Sleeping Beauty.After seriously threatening Jon, Drogon melts the Iron Throne, picks up Daenerys, and flies away. We’re hoping not to a red priestess of R hllor for some resurrection ritual.6. “All hail Bran the Broken, First of his Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm”(Photo by Macall B. Polay/HBO)Grey Worm brings prisoner Tyrion before a council of lords and ladies of the realm. Among them: Samwell Tarly; Lord Edmure Tully; Arya, Bran, and Sansa Stark; Brienne of Tarth; Ser Davos Seaworth; Gendry Baratheon, apparently still Lord of Storm’s End; Yara Greyjoy; a Dornish lord; inexplicably hot Robin Arryn, lord of the Eyrie; and Lord Arryn s bannerman Lord Yohn Royce.They are here to decide the fate of Tyrion, Jon Snow, and the realm overall. Davos offers Grey Worm the Reach (Highgarden, former home of the Tyrells), but Grey Worm is being stubborn and just wants “justice.”Arya almost steals the scene entirely, threatening to cut Yara’s throat for suggesting that Jon should die.(Photo by Macall B. Looks like Edmure returned simply to make an ass of himself again, but Sansa stops him before he finishes nominating himself for king. When Sansa notes that Bran can’t have children, Tyrion says it’s for the best.“That is the wheel the queen wanted to break. From now on rulers will not be born. They will be chosen – on this spot – by the lords and ladies of Westeros to serve the realm,” Tyrion suggests.Sansa breaks the North off to be an independent kingdom. Best-Reviewed Comic Book/Graphic Novel Movies 2018DC s Aquaman may have dominated the late-December (and early January) box office, but for the critics it was another dominating year for Marvel Studios, with the company taking three spots in this category. And then even the non-MCU Deadpool 2 made the grade. The Death of Stalin, based on a French graphic novel, made its appearance to give the category a kick in the tights. That is the best number 1 opening for the first weekend of December since well, Frozen. The original Frozen grossed .67 million in its post-Thanksgiving weekend. The all-time first-weekend champion in December is Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 remake of Ocean’s Eleven, which started with .1 million. Frozen II’s also number amounted to the 26th-best third weekend in history and its 7.5 million is the 19th-best ever after 17 days of release. Every film that has grossed at least 0 million in that period has passed the 0 million mark. Frozen II is about million ahead of the pace of where The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was in 2013, which finished its run with 4 million, but it is had a third weekend about million higher. A final tally in the 0 million region is still in the cards domestically. Worldwide the film has passed 9 million and it is personally going to get Disney to billion in global ticket sales this week – the first time a studio has ever reached that mark in a calendar year.Rotten Returns: Playmobil: The Movie Fails to Crack Million In 2017, Open Road released The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature (13% on the Tomatometer). It currently owns the record for lowest-grossing opening weekend for a film released in over 4,000 theaters (.34 million). This year, STX released the animated UglyDolls (27% on the Tomatometer) into 3,652 theaters; it opened to .6 million. Open Road became Global Road and quickly dissolved. One of its last releases was to be Playmobil: The Movie (19% on the Tomatometer), which, despite getting some overseas play (to the tune of .4 million), was delayed and delayed here in the States. The animated film was eventually picked up by, you guessed it, STX Films, and was finally put into theaters this weekend. It grossed a grand total of 0,000. Not since the December 2008 release of Delgo have we seen a film open on over 2,000 screens and not gross million. That makes it easily one of the biggest losers of the year, but it will live in infamy for years to come on that chart above.The Top 10 and Beyond: Knives Out On Pace With Ferrari; Joker Moves Up the Record Books Again Rian Johnson’s murder mystery, Knives Out, dropped 47% to .1 million this week. Its total of .49 million continues to keep it on a 0 million pace, but it needs to maintain word-of-mouth as the film is running about neck-and-neck with Ford v Ferrari. James Mangold’s racing drama had million after its first 12 days, but had a second weekend of .7 million, besting Knives. Ford increased its haul to million this weekend with another .54 million. Its final domestic gross is on pace for somewhere between 2-3 million, but it will still need around another - million internationally to break even. Knives Out has made 4 million worldwide to date and is already easily into profit for Lionsgate.Last week’s other big release, Queen Slim, is just outpacing the release of Burlesque back in 2010, which had .98 million after 12 days of release and had a second weekend gross of .13 million. Queen Slim’s second weekend was .53 million and it has grossed .89 million domestically so far. Burlesque finished with .44 million. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is underperforming a bit, but mostly compared to our hopeful expectations for it. With .12 million through its third weekend the film is just outpacing Roland Emmerich’s Midway, which is up to .4 million in its fifth weekend – but with only 8 million worldwide it is going to struggle to break even give its budget. The Mr. Rogers drama with Tom Hanks is now looking at - million during its run, which is still going to result in a multiple over 4x since its opening weekend, which is better than any November wide release this year. If this comes to pass it will also be only the fourth film of 2019 to open on a Friday and gross more than four times its opening weekend after The Upside, Yesterday, and Overcomer.Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters with Mark Ruffalo expanded into wide release this week (94-to-2,012 theaters) and grossed .1 million, which is not a particularly strong number. Just last year Focus moved the RBG biopic, On the Basis of Sex, from 112-to-1,923 theaters in its third weekend and it grossed .07 million. That is about the most favorable comparison we can make for the environmental drama – though it is one to watch, as its Audience Score is a very high 96%. Its .1 million is certainly a better number than Amazon’s The Aeronauts put up this weekend. In 50 theaters the hot air balloon weather adventure grossed just ,000. That is worse than Noah Hawley’s Lucy in the Sky, which opened to ,058 in 37 theaters this October. NEON’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire was the big per-theater-average winner this week, grossing ,105 in just two theaters. That is the 16th-best PTA of 2019. The top 20 PTAs of the year have each grossed at least million. Parasite meanwhile is now NEON’s second-highest grossing movie after I, Tonya, with .34 million. Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List was put back into 1,029 theaters for its 25th anniversary, and while it did not make the top 10, it did gross 6,750 over the weekend. Beyond that it was business as usual as the same 10 films led the way with the top six films all remaining in the same spots. Ralph Breaks the Internet led for a third straight week with .25 million. Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch was not far behind with .03 million. Creed II dropped to .9 million in third place. The top 10 films of the week grossed just .87 million and averaged the same 61.4% on the Tomatometer as the week prior. Leading the crowd in the bucks department will no doubt be Jumanji: The Next Level, which brings back the gang from the smash 2017 hit and is hoping to earn a large piece of the holiday box office. Clint Eastwood had a solid December hit last year with The Mule, and now turns to another true-crime tale with Richard Jewell (88% on the Tomatometer), about the 2006 bombing at the Atlanta Olympics and the innocent man who was accused of it. Then Universal is taking another stab at horror for the holidays with a second remake of Bob Clark’s Black Christmas. But wait, we’re not nearly done. Opening in limited release is Jay Roach’s Bombshell, about the sexual harassment scandal at Fox News. Adam Sandler teams up with the Safdie Brothers for the anxiety-raising Uncut Gems (96% on the Tomatometer), for which many are touting Sandler for an Oscar nomination.
