(Photo by Addison Wright)Addison Wright s Hiplet: Because We Can is part of the Scene In Color Film Series, presented by Target, which shines a light on incredible filmmaking talent. As part of the series, three emerging filmmakers will receive mentorship from producer Will Packer, and their films are available to watch on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieClips Indie Channel, Peacock, and the NBC App.Chicago filmmaker Addison Wright discovered the subjects of his short film, Hiplet, while browsing the Explore section of Instagram. When he learned that the “hiplet” dancers – who fuse traditional ballet with hip-hop and have become viral sensations – were also based in Chicago, he knew he had to make a film about them. The film he first had in mind was not the exact film he would end up making: Initially, Wright wanted to shoot the troupe dancing in a ballroom that had, at one point in its history, been a white-only space; but when he got to talking to the dancers, and learned about what hiplet meant to them, he realized he wanted to give them time in the film to tell their own stories.Wright, who has been inspired by ’90s music videos, as well as directors like Spike Lee, Hype Williams, Spike Jonze, and Chris Cunningham, says: “The project evolved from a music video that had a story behind it – placing them in this establishment that was white-only at one point – into a short film, a documentary where they break the fourth wall and express themselves and tell the world about the adversity that they face being hiplet ballerinas.”Hiplet is the first film for the director, a graduate of Delaware State University who’s been making films for more than seven years. And it’s been an auspicious debut: Hiplet was an Official Selection at the 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival. His next project will be a feature, a love story set in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. “I didn’t grow up seeing a lot of Black love stories like that,” Wright says. “One of my favorite movies is A Bronx Tale. I’ve just always been compelled by that, that movie is just really good. To be able to make a film like that, that people of color can watch and go, ‘That’s me, I say the same things, I do the same things’… I want to add to that genre.”See more shorts and meet more filmmakers from the Scene in Color Film Series.bob手机客户端下载In the midst of a busy spring premiere schedule, Marvel’s Cloak Dagger returned to Freeform on April 4 with a special two-episode premiere, highlighting the confidence of the sophomore show as an outlier in Marvel’s television business.Starring Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph as two teens whose super powers work together by harnessing the powers of light and dark to save their city, Cloak Dagger flew largely under the radar during its first season. And while superpowered teens may be nothing new, the show s New Orleans setting and suggestion of fate as the reason for the Divine Pairing getting their powers make it a singular experience. And as we discussed with the cast and producers of the show during WonderCon, the show s second season will solidify the fact that Cloak Dagger is a show worth checking out. Here are five key reasons why.1. The Characters Are True to Their Comic Book Sensibility(Photo by Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)While the two lead characters may not have the costumes of their comic book counterparts, executive producer Jeph Loeb noted Tyrone (Joseph) and Tandy (Holt) were never the sort who said, Let s stop the bank robber.” From early on in their story, they faced issues of homelessness and drugs — problems not easily corrected with a few fistfights or quips.“They were always there to protect the people that couldn t protect themselves,” Loeb said. “So nothing is truer than what we live to do on the show.”The season 2 premiere saw Tandy and her mother in counseling to finally confront the memory of Tandy’s abusive father. It also led Tandy on a journey to better understand why some women refuse to fight or flee when caught in those situations. As with the comic book of the 1980s, it is something she cannot easily tackle with her powers or even her tenacity.2. The Training Wheels Are Coming Off(Photo by Freeform/Frank Ockenfels)According to Holt, the first season saw Tandy and Tyrone facing the world with the training wheels on.“They’re sort of still trying to grasp and cope with the powers that they ve developed, and also they have been sort of forced to be friends in a way, and they didn t have to be,” she explained. “But they ve chosen to take on that role in each other s lives and they are, they re better together than they are apart.”Naturally, the second season will see these training wheels come off.“They’re gonna fall down a couple of times, but they re gonna keep getting back up because that s what they do, she added, and that s what they do for each other. For executive producer Jeph Loeb, the first season concluded with a key question: “Can we actually now become heroes and put our lives on the line and put the rest of our lives on hold in order to do that?”The answer to that question will lead to Tyrone and Tandy properly becoming Cloak and Dagger, respectively. While nothing in the first two episodes suggested the duo would be facing any more perilous situations than they did before, the episodes began to illustrate the world as a more complex place. Tyrone, for example, teleported into an ambulance that was apparently kidnapping a young woman. He involuntarily teleported away before he could help her, but seeing her set him off on a quest to understand what is happening to him. The situation also dovetailed with Tandy’s story as the woman in the ambulance turned out to be a victim of domestic violence she could not help.3. A New Story for a New Year(Photo by Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)Cloak Dagger ended its first season by giving Tandy and Tyrone a legitimate win. They fulfilled their destiny and saved New Orleans from a cyclical calamity requiring the sacrifice of a generational “Divine Pairing.” But with both of them surviving — a new element in the show’s particular mythology — the two are now looking at become vigilantes to give them a new purpose.“[In the] second season we step into the realm of human trafficking,” Holt said. “It is a really intense journey for both Tandy and Tyrone. That journey begins with the woman in the ambulance, and, as showrunner Joe Pokaski noted, helps form a key story for the season.“When we started talking about this season, we had talked a little about human trafficking, and how everyone knows the term but not everyone knows how widespread it is — that there are hundreds of thousands of men and women being trafficked for both labor and for sex,” he said. As both Tyrone and Tandy experience the sort of marginalization that leaves people vulnerable to trafficking, Pokaski and his team thought “they could be the heroes for some of these forgotten people.”Luckily, the pair will have honed their powers in the eight months between the end of the first season and the beginning of the second.“Ty is finally becoming a little more comfortable in himself,” Joseph explained, and he s “confident in himself and confident in his powers.”Of course, he has plenty of time to settle in to those powers as he is still hiding out in the old church and evading the cops who are accusing him of a murder he did not commit. Which, as it happens, inverts the status quo from season 1, which saw Tandy living in the church and Tyrone living at home with his parents. Joseph said Tyrone’s relationship with his family will continue to be explored despite their separation. He also said it may even lead to some “interesting” developments.4. A Little Mayhem(Photo by Marvel/Alfonso Bresciani)While Emma Lahana created an offbeat cop in the form of Brigid O’Reilly during the show s first season, fans of Marvel Comics know Brigid better as Mayhem, an apparently undead former cop who can issue a paralyzing gas and attack foes with razor talons. It seemed that version of the character was teased in a stinger scene at the end of the season. But as viewers saw in the second part of the season 2 premiere, Mayhem is not as much contained within Brigid as it is something she must face head on.“She s so different from Brigid,” explained Lahana, who plays both versions of the character. Unlike her comic book counterpart, the two characters inhabit two separate bodies. “Her physicality is very different. Mayhem is kind of in this fight or flight mode at all times, whereas Brigid s about more protective of herself,” she added.Pokaski teased that Mayhem may not be the only new featured character joining the show’s ranks in the weeks to come.5. The Show Illustrates an Authentic Teen FriendshipWhile originally marketed as a teen romance, Cloak Dagger made the unusual choice to depict Tandy and Tyrone as friends and tease a potential romance later. As Pokaski put it, “When I was reading the comics, all I wanted was for Tandy and Tyrone to get together. Years into reading it, I realized that maybe I just wanted to want Tandy and Tyrone to get together.”It is a sensation he wants to recreate on the television series: “I want to make sure they are best friends.”Added Joseph, “You have these people from two totally different backgrounds that can connect. For them to have a companionship and to be the one person that they can trust was what was so beautiful to me.”Holt echoed his sentiment, saying, “I know everybody wants to see them get a room or something, but it s like right now the companionship that they have is so sweet to me. The opening episodes of the new season illustrates the newfound BFFs sense of companionship, with Tandy stealing her way into Tyrone’s old school so he can get course plans and textbooks, and the two enjoying movie nights together. They also still squabble because they are both quite stubborn, but it nonetheless reveals a certain closeness between the two that s a bond beyond their status as “The Divine Pairing. Loeb hopes it will prove “inspirational” for the program’s key audience.“[Hopefully younger viewers] recognize that people of that age can have male friends and female friends and friends that are interracial,” he said. “All those things go into the complicated world that they live in, but there s no doubt in anyone s mind who watches the show, how deeply [Tandy and Tyrone] care about each other.”That said, a romantic relationship is still the pair’s likely trajectory, as Pokaski teased, “I think the best love story is about falling in love with your best friend.”Marvel s Cloak Dagger airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform.Like this? (Photo by Jay Maidment/Walt Disney Studios)All Chris Hemsworth Movies RankedOut of all the Avengers stars, Chris Hemsworth had the easiest time selling his character to the world. Not just because he looks like a Norse god when you give him a hammer and a funny hat, but because audiences had virtually seen no other prior Hemsworth performances to influence their perception of him. Before arriving on American shores, Hemsworth shot 171 episodes of long-running Australian soap Home and Away (approximately 2.5% of total episodes to date). He made a notable corpse in the Star Trek reboot as George Kirk in the opening scene. And that about sums up Hemsworth s pre-Thor career.Since his 2011 MCU debut, Hemsworth has shown a loyalty not just to franchises (he s been in both Huntsman movies, and came back for Star Trek Into Darkness) but directors, like Ron Howard (Rush, In the Heart of the Sea) and Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Bad Time as the El Royale). It suggests Hemsworth is an affable sort, a quality that helped him steer Thor through two decent-to-average movies before blossoming in the renegade Thor: Ragnarok, and becoming the true hero of Avengers: Infinity War.Most recently, he had one of the first post-quarantine movie hits with Netflix s Extraction, a rough action throwback produced by the Russo brothers. And he ll be back in the MCU for 2022 s Thor: Love Thunder. And now, we re taking a look back on every Chris Hemsworth movie ranked by Tomatometer!

Daniel Radcliffe may never in his lifetime escape questions about his most-famous role: Harry Potter. Fortunately, the star doesn t mind fielding fan queries, including those from Potterhead colleagues and the occasional journalist.Radcliffe s Miracle Workers costar Karan Soni, who plays Sanjay, was the biggest Potterhead on the cast, Radcliffe revealed, and he was happy to indulge Soni.“I think there’s like an expectation that I will hate talking about it, which I really don’t particularly,” Radcliffe told Rotten Tomatoes.Radcliffe now stars in surreal TBS comedy Miracle Workers, which presents Heaven, Inc. as a regular office grind where employees try to answer prayers every day. God (Steve Buscemi) is over it and decides one day that he’s going to blow up the Earth.(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Angels Craig (Radcliffe) and Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan) convince God to give them a chance to prove humans are worth preserving. If they can perform one miracle in two weeks, God will let the Earth live. The prayer they’ve chosen to answer: Help Sam (Jon Bass) and Laura (Sasha Compere) fall in love. The angels can’t directly interfere with Sam and Laura. They can just set things up and hope they work. It’s like a game of Sims with real people.“They’re a lot more caring with them than I was with my Sims,” Radcliffe said. “I killed my Sims accidentally. I put the fridge the wrong way around and didn’t realize.”Viswanathan confessed to even more sadistic Sim abuse.“I used to take the ladder out of the pool and just watch them suffer,” she said of her Sims abuse, which shocked her costar.“That’s you killing them!” Radcliffe objected. “I accidentally made my guy die. That’s a murder.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Heaven, Inc.’s interference on the show also has collateral damage. Obstacles they throw in Sam and Laura’s path may have deadlier impacts on completely innocent bystanders.“It does, but it is all for the goal of saving the entire world,” Radcliffe said in defense of the angels. “We’re in a world where virtually anything can be justified in order to save the existence of the species as a whole.”Miracle Workers is a dark comedy that way, but it’s ultimately optimistic.“There’s a through-line of hope even when it’s really messed up and extremely dark,” Viswanathan said. “They’re just sticking together and believing in something and going for it. That’s very much the ethos of the show.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Miracle Workers showcases Radcliffe’s comedic side. He has had funny cameos in films like Trainwreck and shows like Bojack Horseman, and he even played a farting corpse in 2016 film Swiss Army Man opposite Paul Dano.“I’ve always loved doing comedy,” Radcliffe said. “I think I’ve done a fair amount that certain people have seen. Swiss Army Man is a fairly niche film. The stage shows I’ve done have actually mostly been comedy in some way. I love it. It’s a very lovely thing, particularly on a set like this where you just have to go to set and try and be stupid every day and make people laugh.”And Miracle Workers can be gloriously stupid. One joke is just about how to pronounce “gyro.” Most foodies know it sounds like “yee-ro,” not like a gyroscope.“I thought it was ‘gyro’ as well, but my girlfriend — near where Erin grew up is a huge Middle Eastern community — and she was like, ‘No, it’s yee-ro,” Radcliffe said.(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)If Miracle Workers is a hit, there will be a second season, but it won’t be about the same angels. Creator Simon Rich’s plan is to make Miracle Workers an anthology series.“The idea would be to reset it in a different time, place, characters — sort of to do for comedy what American Horror Story is for horror,” Radcliffe said. “Once you’ve saved the world, it’s hard to find where to go from there for the second series, I think.”Whether or not that means season 1 ends with a miracle or we all die, it will be a definitive ending.“The opportunity TBS gave him to do was to do a totally self-contained season so you didn’t have to, as a writer, write an open-ended ending which may or may not go onto something in season 2,” Radcliffe said of Rich s deal. “Essentially they let us make a three-hour film with commercials.”(Photo by Curtis Baker/TBS)Returning to our Potter obsession (and Radcliffe s patient accommodation), we related that when his Potter costar Rupert Grint spoke to us for Snatch season 2, he said it was weird for him to watch another actor play Ron Weasley in the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Radcliffe hasn’t seen the play yet, but not because of another actor playing Harry.“I think I would find it weirder just sitting in the audience and know that people were probably looking at what my reaction to the thing was,” Radcliffe said. “That’s kind of the reason I haven’t gone.”It’s hard to believe that it has been eight years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Radcliffe has had a whole career since then, but he’ll always be Harry Potter.“It’s still a big part of my life, but I’ve gotten to go on and do loads of other things,” Radcliffe said. “I’m very happy with how it’s all gone. If you told me at the time that I was going to be sitting here eight years later talking about this amazing, weird series that I love, I’d be very, very happy with that sort of thing.”Most actors don’t get one or the other. Radcliffe considers himself blessed to have both.“I don’t think the idea of me always being known as Harry Potter and the idea of me just being an actor who does lots of stuff are mutually exclusive,” Radcliffe said. “I think they can both be true. So far they have been so fingers crossed.”Miracle Workers premieres Tuesday, February 12 at 10:30 p.m. on TBS. The premiere is available for viewing now at TBS.com.

Ghcxuf In 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stunned fans by announcing the studio was developing a film based on Marvel Comics’ Eternals. The assortment of late 1970s Jack Kirby characters are somewhat obscure, but Feige said the “Ancient Aliens” sci-fi trope buried in the concept made it a worthy addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe s Phase Four. Now, three or so years later, the movie is nearing release with an eclectic cast, a now Oscar-winning director, and the same sort of question marks that surrounded Guardians of the Galaxy before its 2014 release. So join us as we examine everything we know about Eternals to determine if it will contain the next Groot or, perhaps, something more mysterious.[Updated on 8/19/21]The Premise(Photo by Marvel Comics)As one of Kirby’s final projects before his he parted ways with Marvel Comics for keeps, The Eternals continues themes Kirby worked on throughout the 1970s in books like DC Comics New Gods: the origins of myths and the power of ancient beings. Debuting in 1976’s The Eternals #1, the comic book focused on a race of humans engineered by the alien Celestials to protect the Earth. Of course, things did not go as planned, and life on Earth developed along different lines. Nevertheless, the Eternals remained to protect the planet from the Deviants, Celestial experiments that also did not evolve quite as expected. The Eternals are themselves long-lived and have developed many advanced technologies; primary reasons why they stay in the shadows, let humans solve their own problems, and focus on more interstellar threats. But this philosophy was not embraced by all members of the race, and a civil war broke out that eventually led to the Eternals being able to store cosmic energy in their own bodies and use it in a variety of ways. There is also some business about a faction founding a colony on Saturn’s moon, Titan, but that couldn’t possibly matter to the film’s story, right? In the modern day, most Eternals carry on private conflicts away from the eyes of the public or act as superheroes to obscure their real intent; which makes sense for a group of Marvel characters who rarely enjoy the privilege of their own comic book. As it happens, Kirby’s version of the title ended after just two years. The title would return either as planned miniseries or short runs in the 1980s and 2000s. Neil Gaiman wrote one such miniseries miniseries in 2006.(Photo by Marvel Comics)Despite rarely enjoying the starring role, the Eternals quickly became a favorite of writers and artists who followed in Kirby’s wake. Various members of the original cast worked their way into books like Thor, and their backstory continued to deepen. Gaiman’s miniseries, for example, recast prominent Eternals like Ikaris and Thena (more on them in a moment) as millions of years old instead of the tens of thousands the Kirby original suggested. He also introduced the idea that the Eternals suffered from a collective amnesia about their origins and lived as conventional humans until circumstances forced them to remember their old lives. And though partial amnesia would explain their absence from recent battles, a teaser released in May suggests the Eternals will be in full possession of their powers and memories as the story begins. According to Marvel, the film will focus on the Eternals – who have lived on planet Earth in secret for the last 7,000 years – renewing their conflict with the Deviants sometime after the missing human population returned from the Blip. The May preview even goes so far as to mention the Eternals never interfered in human affairs until this new crisis, which means they actively chose not be part of recent events.A final trailer released in August hinted at their reasoning for standing down as the Chitauri, Thanos, and others threatened the Earth – the Celestials forbade their intervention except in cases of Deviant incursion. The preview also offered a greater understanding of the film’s take on the characters: estranged for centuries, the group must reunite to stave off “The Emergence.” The event is likened to the end of the world and somehow allows the Deviants to resume their assaults on the planet. Also, “The Emergence” is only possible because of the energy used to return all of the beings Thanos snapped away. That suggests some short-sightedness on the part of the Celestials with their non-intervention rule and, perhaps, a reason for the Eternals to go public during the course of the film. Alternatively, though, the Celestials may have wanted the Infinity Saga to occur for some obscure reason.Meet Your Eternals(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)To play these quasi-mythic characters, Marvel assembled a surprising roster of actors. Leading the pack is Gemma Chan as Sersi. Though she reportedly masquerades as a museum curator, she is really an Eternal with the ability to manipulate matter. In early discussions about the film, Feige said Sersi is the starring character, though it is unclear if this is still the case in the finished film.Angelina Jolie also appears as Thena, a warrior who uses her abilities with cosmic energy to fashion weapons. Some reports note she is in exile from the main Eternals group, so she could serve an antagonistic function even as she unites with the others against the Deviants.Richard Madden is Ikaris, a tactical genius and, back in the comics, a frequent guest star in other titles. Although Marvel is offering us a mere 7,000 years of Eternal history, we’d believe he’s millions of years old as Gaiman suggested.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Other Eternals include Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, a Bollywood star whose fame-seeking life suggests he may not be aware that he is an Eternal; Lauren Ridloff as super-fast scout Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, an inventor with a tendency to break the Eternals non-intervention edict; Haaz Sleiman as Phastos’s husband; Barry Keoghan as Druig, whose ability to manipulate minds and distance from the others suggests he may also be a possible antagonist; Lia McHugh as Sprite, an illusion-generating Eternal who only looks twelve-years-old and may be the source of any potential memory loss among the group; Don Lee as Gilgamesh, who can project an exoskeleton and whose name conjures up a very direct connection to ancient human myths; and Salma Hayek as Ajak, the leader of the Eternals, who can also speak with the Celestials, suggesting some of Kirby’s most out-there character designs may be featured in the film. At least, we hope some authentic Kirby weirdness will appear.Additionally, Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman, a human man who may or may not become Marvel Comics Black Knight over the course of the film.Behind the Eternals(Photo by Handout/Getty Images)On the filmmaking side of things, Chloé Zhao serves as director. Long before her Oscar-winning film Nomadland became the talk of Hollywood, her acclaimed sophomore film The Rider, her presentation to Marvel Studios, and her visual aesthetics reportedly wowed Feige. Indeed, the executive became the butt of jokes during the Spring of 2020 as he continued to praise Zhao’s use of natural landscapes to create both scope and intimacy without green screens or visual effects. But in the few moments we’ve seen of the film, those qualities definitely appear to be on display. On scripting duties are Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who’ve been with the project since 2018. Although the pair has few credits, Kaz has won awards for Refuge, his documentary on the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and a short film. Zhao also took a pass at the script.Other people on the crew include cinematographer Ben Davis – a five-time Marvel veteran who shot Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel before Eternals – and editors Dylan Tichenor (Zero Dark Thirty) and Craig Wood (both Guardians films and Ant-Man and the Wasp). Providing the film’s score is Game of Thrones  Ramin Djawadi, who seems like a fitting choice – and not just because two actors from that series are in the film. Like Thrones, the Eternals concept contains a sense of closely-knit cultures, family politics, and an inscrutable enemy on the horizon. The Implications Of Eternals(Photo by Marvel Studios)As names like Ikaris, “Gilgamesh,” and “Sersi” imply, the notion that the Eternals have been on Earth all along will have far-reaching effects on the MCU. If the resolution of the film means they have to reveal themselves to the superhero community, then there’s the expectation for them to, at least, be on call in the future. It is also easy to imagine resentment could bubble up from their unwillingness to lend aid during the Battle of New York or the invasion of Wakanda. It is also possible Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) knew about them and specifically chose not to approach them; maybe he and Phastos had an understanding.Meanwhile, deepening the presence of their creators, the Celestials, in MCU lore could point to a threat worthy of a grand Avengers assemblage in Phase Five or Phase Six. The Guardians did face off against Kurt Russell s Ego, who identified himself as a Celestial even though that wasn t necessarily true of his character in the comics, in Vol. 2 and defeated him. But it s anyone s guess how even this group of active heroes and Eternals are supposed to confront an impossibly powerful Celestial like Ziran the Tester without the aid of a partial Celestial like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Also, looking back on the allusions to Mesopotamian and Greek mythology, establishing a superpower presence in antiquity opens up other settings for future films, namely the past beyond World War II. Imagine an MCU-set Western or something more resembling a fantasy epic in which the Eternals fight Apocalypse during his time as a pharaoh in Egypt – a very similar story already exists in the annuls of Marvel Comics history. Granted, Marvel Studios prefers its films to be contemporary, but these characters’ long lives do offer new possibilities.Of course, this is all mere speculation. Job one of Eternals is to make Sersi and the rest bankable characters, like Groot and Rocket before them. And while we’re unsure any of the them will become the smash commercial icons those characters became, we expect at least one Eternal will be a welcome sight the next time the Avengers plan a pancake breakfast or defense of the planet.Delayed Just A YearLike Black Widow before it, Eternals was planned for release in 2020 November 6, 2020 to be exact but experienced some of the sliding calendar woes both Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings faced as the pandemic significantly altered theatrical exhibition. For the moment, Eternals is set for release on November 5, almost exactly a year after its original date.Eternals is in theaters on November 5, 2021.On an Apple device? bob手机客户端下载 The huge success of The Matrix spawned a number of films with similar aesthetics: shiny, black leather wardrobes, lots of slow-motion, and action scenes that mixed martial arts with gunfighting. Take all of that and combine it with Blade, and you ll see a path leading to one of the best action-horror franchises we ve got — Underworld. This original franchise chronicles the centuries-long secret war between vampires and werewolves, and while none of its five entries impressed critics the highest-rated film is the first, at just 31% on the Tomatometer there is more to it than meets the eye. Sure, it s full of campy B-movie silliness, but it s so devoted to its concept and its complex mythology that you can t help but be enthralled by it. Plus, it gave us Kate Beckinsale as one of the most badass heroines of the 2000s. For the 15th anniversary of the franchise s second entry, Underworld: Evolution, we re throwing on our best black leather jacket and cranking up the nu-metal as we revisit why Underworld is the most underrated action-horror franchise.It Takes Its Surprisingly Complex Mythology Seriously(Photo by (c)Screen Gems courtesy Everett Collection)A franchise about vampires fighting werewolves — otherwise known as Lycans — admittedly sounds silly, and it could have remained nothing more than that. But the Underworld franchise s biggest strength is that it builds a big and complex mythology that it treats absolutely seriously. Because this is not a franchise about a single vampire or werewolf, but whole communities of them, we see how their weaknesses inform their way of life. The vampire covens castles have automatic sealing gates outside every window to prevent sunlight from entering. Rise of the Lycans, the third film in the series and a sequel, depicts captured Lycans who are forced to wear collars adorned with silver spikes to prevent them from transforming. We also see a fantastic escalation and evolution of weaponry being used by both sides, from more traditional artifacts like silver swords to UV bullets and grenades filled with liquid silver.Though not necessarily groundbreaking, the Underworld franchise also introduces new concepts into both the vampire and werewolf mythos. In Evolution, we learn that the first generation of werewolves was not able to return to human form, making them generally more feral. On the vampire side, gone is the need for human blood (any blood is sufficient even that of other vampires), but we learn that blood carries memory; one can see a another s entire life flash before their eyes by ingesting some of their blood. Each film doubles down on the mythology of the previous one while adding a new layer, and one could easily imagine a cinematic Underworld universe with spin-off material recounting the creation of the other covens or the first and second immortal purges of Awakening. Its Supporting Cast Elevates the SillinessIf the franchise itself taking its mythology seriously helps bring you into its world, then hiring classy stage actors to elevate the sillier aspects of the story makes it feel like you re watching a Shakespearean horror epic. This starts with Kate Beckinsale herself. Before she was the leather-clad Death Dealer Selene, the Oxford-trained actress played Hero in Much Ado About Nothing and had appeared in several West End productions. Then there s the villains. The moment Bill Nighy shows up in heavy makeup as the evil vampire overlord Viktor, curls his lip, and starts talking about the Lycans, you re fully committed to this franchise. Nighy s serious yet over-the-top performance is like watching him play Titus Andronicus one minute and Macbeth the next. His rapport with Michael Sheen s slave-turned-freedom fighter-turned-villain Lucian was so great to watch that they made an entire prequel just to give Sheen a Spartacus speech to deliver to an army of Lycans.Evolution brings in former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (Sir!) Derek Jacobi to play the first immortal man, Alexander Corvinus, and he similarly plays his role as if he were in a tragic stage play rather than a action-horror movie. Just listen to the somber way he speaks about how much it pains him that the war his two sons have begun has lasted for centuries, and that he can t bring himself to kill one of them to end it all. The latter two movies of the franchise also introduce two Game of Thrones veterans: Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) plays a vampire noble who loves his son and gets to do some badass sword-fighting, while Tobias Menzies (Edmure Tully) plays Lucian s successor as the leader of the Lycans, boasting a commanding presence and a rather enviable hairstyle. It s a simple yet very effective way to make the villains memorable and the conflict more compelling. It Features Great Use Of Practical EffectsOne of the biggest cinematic crimes in history is the decline of practical makeup and costume design in werewolf movies — something that extends to many other genres across the industry. But Underworld knows that there s no beating a practical werewolf suit. The design of the eight-foot-tall beasts that walk on two legs with grey skin, massive necks, and elongated heads are some of the most impressive werewolves in decades, and they are unique enough to be recognized among the crowd of movie werewolves. These Lycans have less fur compared to most other interpretations, with rather Mohawk-like manes that accentuate the beasts imposing musculature. Though they are meant to be doglike, the Lycans also possess some feline characteristics, which was the intention from the beginning, to give the Lycans a sense of agility. The use of practical suits with yak fur and animatronic legs and faces, as well as the extensive wirework, make the action scenes hit harder and the gore feel more real. Sure, there is still a lot of CGI in the franchise, especially in the latter films, but it s always a thrill to see a huge, practical Lycan chase Selene before she puts them down.It Feels Like A Nu-Metal Music VideoThough it initially drew comparisons to The Matrix, the Underworld franchise quickly carved out its own gothic look that made the franchise instantly recognizable. Its use of moonlight and shadow in the cinematography, its excess of black leather, and its use of elaborate sets and European castles make Underworld feel like you re stepping into an early-200os Hot Topic store or a late-1990s nu-metal concert. Central to this aesthetic is Kate Beckinsale herself, who first pops on screen in a trench coat, perched in the rain like a gargoyle surveying the streets of Budapest with enough gothic glamour to create an iconic look for the franchise at large. We re not saying the style is for everyone, but it s difficult to deny the role it s played as the signature look for the series; not every franchise can say the same.It Knows How To Reinvent ItselfEvery long-lasting franchise, at some point, has to evolve or die. The recent Fast Furious movies have little in common with the very first film in the franchise, for example. Though Underworld hasn t exactly turned into a Mission: Impossible-style spy thriller, it has still managed to change and adapt over time, providing different and exciting experiences for the audience with every entry. After the first film ends with a change in the status quo for Selene and the worlds of both vampires and Lycans, the second entry dives deeper into the mythology by introducing us to the first of both species. Their look is unlike anything in the first movie, offering a proper winged nosferatu and a feral werewolf straight from a classic Universal monster movie. The third film goes full Romeo and Juliet by returning to the past, making tragic heroes of the Lycans, and trading UV bullets for swords.Even the more maligned Awakening still offers something new, as it jumps forward in time to a dystopian future in which the Lycans are even bigger and more terrifying. Lastly, Blood Wars feels like a response to the rise in popularity of Game of Thrones, as it explores even more political intrigue and features an epic fantasy-heavy third act that s basically an Arthurian myth mixed with the triumphant climax of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Seriously, there s an army of pale, silver-haired vampires brandishing swords in the middle of a gunfight, and it rules.Underworld: Evolution was released in theaters on December 17, 2010.On an Apple device?
