The Black Hole (1979) 38% (Photo by © Buena Vista courtesy Everett Collection)The Black Hole is one of the forgotten sci-fi films that came in the wake of the original Star Wars, only this was more of a disaster and horror film with a Dante’s Inferno vibe than a traditional Disney film – and it was the studio s first movie released with a PG rating. It features then-cutting-edge special effects, a star-studded cast (including Robert Forster and Anthony Perkins), and a dark story that isn’t common in Disney movies anymore. David Cornelius wrote for eFilmCritic that it ranks among the very best films to come from the post-Star Wars sci-fi boom. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) 50%(Photo by Walt Disney Productions)Long before he played iconic action heroes in the 1980s, young Kurt Russel was the star of a bizarre series of movies for Disney. These movies followed his character, affable college student Dexter Riley, in a series of ridiculous adventures. The first of them was The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, in which Dexter accidentally becomes a human computer after being electrocuted. What does he do with this power? Well, help his quiz team reach the nationals while he unwittingly helps bust a gambling ring, of course! It’s a funny comedy carried by Russell’s innate charisma, which was enough to make him return for two sequels that saw Dexter fall victim to further freak accidents.FUZZBUCKET (1986)(Photo by Samuel Goldwyn Company)Remember when kids movies were the stuff of nightmares? Fuzzbucket remembers. Fuzzbucket is clearly a blatant attempt to capitalize on the success of E.T. and ALF, only without the cutesy friendship of the Spielberg movie or the weird sarcasm of the puppet-powered sitcom. Visually, Fuzzbucket is something of an abomination, but he still becomes best friends with a young boy named Michael. The twist? He can turn invisible, so for most of the movie, the characters think Michael is talking to an imaginary friend. Fuzzbucket is a bizarre, yet funny, and at times even heartfelt movie that will still haunt your nightmares.Gus (1976)  Back in the 1970s, Disney was all about Don Knotts playing oddball characters in comedies, but no movie of his had a premise as off kilter as Gus. Before the endless Air Bud movies put a golden retriever at the center of every sport imaginable, this film made a mule the best football player around, even taking his team to the Super Bowl. With an inspiring message and a cast that manages to play the whole thing straight, this is a Disney movie you have to see to believe. Writing for Common Sense Media, Randy White declared that “kids will get a kick out of this mule tale.”Halloweentown (1998) 80% (Photo by © Disney Channel courtesy Everett Collection)Before Harry Potter sent readers to a school of witchcraft and wizardry, a Disney Channel movie sent us to Halloweentown, a surreal fantasy that introduced many kids to the wonders of horror and practical monster effects. The story follows a 13-year-old girl who discovers she comes from a family of witches, and who has to fight an evil that threatens to destroy the titular town, where all sorts of monsters live in harmony. Variety critic Laura Fries wrote, “What separates this original pic from the usual Halloween fare is that it captures the spirit of a holiday designed for kids. It s sweet and fun, but too much could definitely give you a stomach ache.” The movie not only has a great kid-friendly horror atmosphere, but it also stars the late, great Debbie Reynolds as an inspirational witch, and there are three sequels all on Disney+ to boot. The Luck of the Irish (2001)  (Photo by © Hal Roach Studios courtesy Everett Collection)The Disney Channel was full of genre movies with crazy concepts. One of the best one is about a junior high basketball star named Kyle who happens to be extremely lucky in life. When he tries to look into where his family comes from for Heritage Day, he discovers that he has roots in Ireland, and also that he is slowly turning into a leprechaun because someone stole his lucky gold coin. What comes next is a wacky, funny, and heartwarming story of the importance of diversity and how history shapes who we are.Bride of Boogedy (1987) 20% (Photo by Disney+)A novelty salesman moves his family to a town called Lucifer Falls (red flag, anyone?) and discovers that their new home is haunted. This made-for-TV movie was a rare horror film made by Disney that served as a gateway horror for many kids, and featured one of the ugliest and scariest ghosts ever to appear in a family-friendly film. Come for the horror, stay for Mimi Kennedy’s fantastic performance as the mother who tries to invite a ghost in for coffee. As critic Rachel Wagner of Rachel’s Reviews said, “I think you ll have a really good time with your family watching Mr. Boogedy.”Phantom of the Megaplex (2000)  (Photo by Disney Channel Productions)What if Phantom of the Opera was remade for kids and set in a movie theater? The Phantom of the Megaplex, another Disney Channel original movie, has something for everyone. Horror fans will enjoy the nods to the classic Universal movies, kids will laugh at the jokes and the zany characters, movie and TV fans will appreciate the addition of Mickey Rooney to the cast, and movie theater employees new and old will instantly connect to the real horrors that the protagonists go through. Cinema Crazed’s Felix Vasquex Jr. wrote that it s “an unusual but entertaining DCOM that really does have its heart in the right place.”The Shaggy D.A. (1976) 50% Made 17 years after the original The Shaggy Dog, this sequel features a lawyer who suddenly transforms into a dog while on the campaign trail for District Attorney. Honestly, its tagline “The only candidate with a law degree and a pedigree” should be enough to pique your interest, but the ridiculous dog costume and Dean Jones’s over the top performance are likely to seal the deal. 7 Pictures’ Kevin Carr wrote, “It s a goofy story, and it s far from a brilliant movie, but The Shaggy D.A. is a fun romp for a family to watch.”That Darn Cat! (1965) 94% Have you ever tried catching bank robbers with nothing but a Siamese cat as your lead? Welcome to That Darn Cat!, which follows the misadventures of two FBI agents tasked with following the only witness to a hostage situation – a cat – to try and locate the thieves hideout. Come for the ridiculous premise, stay for one fantastic four-legged actor and a Sherman Brothers-written title song. Time Out critic Trevor Johnston wrote, “The two legged cast play second string to the marvellous moggie.”The Thirteenth Year (1999)  (Photo by Disney Enterprises, Inc.)After Splash got nominated for an Oscar and The Little Mermaid jumpstarted the Disney animated renaissance, Disney decided to continue its mermaid tradition, only cheaper and made for TV. The result was The Thirteenth Year, the story of a teenage boy who was abandoned by his birth mother – a mermaid – and was raised by human parents. When he hits puberty, he grows gills and becomes a great swimmer, but he also somehow inherits the ability to climb walls and control electricity. The Thirteenth Year is a charming coming-of-age story that also gets very close to being a Spider-Man movie.Like this? 9.65.5 7月喜迎Scandal, streaming, and a continuing plethora of reboots and revivals — some of the most memorable events in TV land in 2019 involved several of those things. Here, to help get viewers excited about the year ahead, we take a month-by-month look back at TV and streaming s recent past.JANUARY#METOO MAKES WAVESWith Julie Chen having left her job as a co-host of The Talk on CBS (after husband Les Moonves was bounced out of his job as chairman at the network following a #MeToo-related investigation), Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba became a new Talk co-host … In other #MeToo TV news, Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of StarTalk on National Geographic Channel, saw his show put on hiatus while the cable network investigated sexual harassment claims against him. In March, NGC announced their investigation was complete, and new episodes of StarTalk resumed airing in April … In the aftermath of Lifetime’s docuseries Surviving R. Kelly, which detailed the long history of sexual abuse allegations against the R B superstar, RCA Records, Kelly’s label, dropped him from their roster … In other Kelly news, Megyn Kelly (no relation) exited NBC News and received the entire amount remaining on her million contract on her way out … The Punisher series finale (but we didn t know it yet – see February) streamed on Netflix … Fox aired Rent Live, though the majority of the broadcast was pre-recorded footage after cast member Brennin Hunt broke his foot during rehearsals the day before the special … The producers of Family Guy, which turned 20 in January 2019, decided to stop targeting the LGBT community in jokes on the Emmy-winning series … Brooklyn Nine-Nine kicked off its sixth season on NBC after being canceled by Fox …  The Sopranos turned 20 … Bob Costas exited NBC Sports after nearly four decades … CBS’s daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful aired its 8,000th episode … Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ended its four-season run on Netflix.FEBRUARYPUNISHER AND JESSICA JONES CANCELEDNetflix announced in mid-month that season 2 of Marvel s The Punisher, which launched in January, would be its last, and that Jessica Jones’ upcoming third season would end that series, as well. The cancellations came after the streaming giant canceled  Marvel series Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage in what came to be known around the office as Marvel s The Purge, as in, Marvel was cutting ties with Netflix while Disney ramped up plans for Marvel characters on its streaming service, Disney+. At the time, Variety reported that Marvel s deal with Netflix prevented any of its shows characters from appearing in non-Netflix properties for two years following cancellation … Maroon 5 performed at halftime and the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta … The Oscars aired without a host for the first time since 1989, after comedian Kevin Hart quit the job after controversy erupted over homophobic tweets he had posted previously … T-Pain, costumed as Monster, was the first winner of The Masked Singer … The Simpsons was renewed for two seasons (31 and 32), meaning it will become the first scripted series to run for 700 episodes … The dramedy Russian Doll premiered on Netflix and went on to earn Emmy nominations as Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for star Natasha Lyonne … Netflix also released the series adaptation of the superhero comic book The Umbrella Academy, which drew 45 million households to watch the first season during its first month of release.MARCHA MONTH OF LAW AND DISORDERHBO aired Leaving Neverland, during which Wade Robson and James Safechuck alleged Michael Jackson sexually abused them when they were children. Chicago officials said the charges were dropped after Smollett agreed to perform community service and forfeit a ,000 bond … Gayle King won stellar reviews for keeping her cool and forging ahead with a CBS This Morning interview with R. Kelly, even as the singer, charged with sexual crimes and dealing with dwindling finances, stood up from his chair and began loudly yelling at her and the camera … Project Runway, which moved to Lifetime after debuting on Bravo, moved back to Bravo for its 17th season … Broad City aired its series finale after five seasons on Comedy Central … Jeopardy host Alex Trebek announced he had been diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer.APRILGAME OF THRONES FINAL SEASON STARTS STRONG, BUT ENDS SERIES WITH A WHIMPERGame of Thrones cranked up its six-episode final season, launching with Winterfell, which scored 92% on the Tomatometer. By the end of its run, however, the season score would be Rotten (it is currently almost Fresh at 59%) after a three-episode flame-out. Outraged fans speculated that series showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were too eager to move on to their Star Wars feature film trilogy — since abandoned — and negotiating their Netflix deal that was announced later (see August) to give the final season their full attention … Disney+ announces launch date, MCU show titles (Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Hawkeye), and price … Crazy Ex-Girlfriend aired its series finale after four seasons on The CW … Kathie Lee Gifford quit her job as co-host of NBC’s Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda, while Sara Gilbert announced she would be leaving her job as co-host on The Talk – a series she created – to focus on other work, like her starring role on The Conners … Gotham ended its five-season run on Fox … CBS All Access debuted a Jordan Peele-created remake of The Twilight Zone … The FX/FXX dramedy You’re the Worst aired its series finale after five seasons.BYE BYE, VEEP, BIG BANG, AND MORE Multiple Emmy-winning comedy Veep ended its seven-season run on HBO, while the network also said goodbye to Game of Thrones in a series finale that was the most-watched telecast in the network’s history with 13.61 million viewers … After 12 seasons, The Big Bang Theory aired its series finale, in which Sheldon Cooper and Amy Farrah Fowler won a Nobel Prize … CBS All Access releases a first look at Star Trek: Picard, which reunites Patrick Stewart with his fan-favorite role as Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation and feature films … Adam Levine leaves The Voice …  Into the Badlands ended its three-season run on AMC … Last Call with Carson Daly ended its 18-season run on NBC … The PBS Kids animated series Arthur began its 22nd season with an episode in which teacher Nigel Rathburn married his boyfriend, Patrick. The show earned particularly strong critical praise for star Zendaya, and was renewed for a second season … The fallout from Game of Thrones’ final season continued with actress Lena Headey, who played Cersei in the series, speaking out about her character s fate: “Obviously you dream of your death,” she told The Guardian. “You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb” James Holzhauer was nicknamed “Jeopardy James” for his 33-game winning streak on the game show, which, when it ended on June 3, had amassed ,464,216 for him. The Child won fans over with his soup-sipping, frog-guzzling, fuzzy green cuteness, only for those viewers to be very disappointed (and start a bootleg merch industry on Etsy) when they learned Disney had purposefully not planned Baby Yoda plush toys and other official swag to be available for the holidays. This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Black Widow, Space Jam 2, and the sequel to Hobbs Shaw. This WEEK S TOP STORYDWAYNE JOHNSON CONFIRMS PLANS FOR HOBBS SHAW SEQUEL(Photo by Frank Masi/©Universal)Universal Pictures recently pushed the Fast Furious sequel F9 back a full year to April 2, 2021 (the date when FF10 previously would have been released). Despite that delay, Dwayne Johnson took to his Instagram feed in a Live Q A this week to confirm that Universal is indeed developing a sequel to last year s spinoff Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs SHaw (Fresh at 67%). Johnson said of the sequel (we like to think of it as 2 Hobbs 2 Shaw), Just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go. Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw earned over 9 million worldwide, which suggests there was an audience not only for the action movie chemistry between Johnson and co-star Jason Statham, but also for the superhero movie direction the film took. Having said that, Universal could easily switch things up with each new film, possibly taking on other action movie genres. The studio has not yet scheduled the second Hobbs Shaw movie for release yet, but with all of the other delays going on these days, it likely won t be before 2022.`Other Top Headlines1. BLACK WIDOW, ETERNALS, AND OTHER MARVEL MOVIES PUSHED BACK SEVERAL MONTHS EACH (Photo by Marvel Studios)As it appears more and more likely that most movie theaters will remain closed until probably May or June (or later), studios have been pushing back their films repeatedly over the last couple of weeks. Disney, which has some of the biggest upcoming titles, has been slower to act, but late this afternoon, the studio did finally make some big announcements. Let s start with Marvel Studios, which always would have been the most impacted because of the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe works. A delay to one or two films basically could mean a delay for the whole slate, or else the narrative could end up a jumbled mess. Black Widow has been pushed back six months from 5/1/2020 to 11/6/2020 (and is also getting a new composer), which was the former home to Eternals, which now takes 2/12/2021, the former date for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Rings. This continues right down the line to include Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Captain Marvel 2 (7/8/2022). (Black Panther II, meanwhile, did not get moved from its 5/6/2022 release date.) Other movies that Disney has bumped back include Mulan (7/24/2020), Jungle Cruise (7/20/2021, which is a push of a whole year), and Indiana Jones 5 (7/29/2022) (likewise). Finally, the movie that is arguably experiencing the biggest change is the long-in-development Artemis Fowl (formerly scheduled for 5/29/2020), which will now skip theaters entirely to debut on the Disney+ app instead.2. EDGAR WRIGHT TO DIRECT AMBITIOUS ANDROID EPIC, SET MY HEART TO FIVE (Photo by Wilson Webb/©TriStar)As with Disney s treatment of its Marvel slate, we can fully expect that release date shifts will have a wave-like effect for the rest of 2020 and 2021. We mention this because director Edgar Wright s next film, Last Night in Soho, had been scheduled for release on September 25, 2020, but it s now very possible that the film might be shifted to late 2020 or sometime in 2021. Wright himself, however, appears to be getting ready for his next film, as he is now attached to direct an adaptation of an upcoming novel called Set My Heart to Five about an android learning to love in an all-too-human future of 2054 when the lead android works as a dentist, as he undergoes an emotional awakening that is sparked by an introduction to 80s and 90s movies. That logline brings to mind two films that were both directed by Steven Spielberg: A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Certified Fresh at 74%) and Ready Player One (Certified Fresh at 72%). Edgar Wright is also still developing his Baby Driver sequel and an adaptation of the YA novel Grasshopper Jungle.3. SPIKE LEE REVEALS WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN FOR HIS ABANDONED JACKIE ROBINSON BIOPIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)It was only seven years ago that future Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman starred in 42, the long-in-development Jackie Robinson biopic (Certified Fresh at 80%). If we go back twice as far to 2013, that lands us in the decade of the 1990s, when Spike Lee had once hoped to give the world his own Jackie Robinson project. In the spirit of giving people something to read while they re holed up during the current COVID-19 crisis, Lee has revealed a Dropbox containing his 1996 screenplay for his adaptation of Jackie Robinson s autobiography, I Never Had it Made. Spike Lee seems to be putting this out there in the spirit of what-might-have-been, but it certainly begs the question, could it still be made? Might he still be able to make his Jackie Robinson?4. WATCHMEN DIRECTOR TAKES ON UNIVERSAL MONSTER MOVIE DON T GO IN THE WATER Universal Pictures scrapped their plans for their Dark Universe after the disappointment of The Mummy in 2017, but the studio has hopes of reviving those various franchises. That quick turnaround started just over a month ago with The Invisible Man. With that in mind, let s look at this week s news that Universal Pictures has hired TV director Stephen Williams (LOST, Watchmen) to helm a suspenseful monster movie called Don t Go in the Water. That title could refer to any number of underwater threats, but writers online are already speculating that this could be a back door remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Having said that, Don t Go in the Water could be a warning about something else, like piranha, barracuda, crocodiles, etc. Heck, this could as easily be a secret Sea Monkeys monster movie.5. ANNE HATHAWAY WILL DISCOVER WHY FRENCH CHILDREN DON T THROW FOOD (Photo by Giles Keyte/Focus Features)The COVID-19 crisis is not progressing at the same pace in different nations, so some international film productions will be able to proceed sooner than here in the United States. That potentially sets up scenarios where Hollywood movie stars may pick up work in those countries while they wait for other work to resume or start here. We don t know if that s the case in this story, but Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in the StudioCanal production French Children Don t Throw Food. The film will be an adaptation of the autobiography of the same title by Pamela Druckerman. Hathaway will star as an American journalist who moves to Paris for her husband s job [who] observes her French neighbors and friends to uncover the secrets behind parenting astonishingly well-behaved French children. 6. DON CHEADLE WILL BE THE VILLAIN IN SPACE JAM 2 (Photo by DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Amidst all of the big delays, it can seem almost jarring when one hears about something that s proceeding unabated. For example, the animation process for Space Jam 2 is still moving forward as scheduled, according to the sequel s star and producer, LeBron James. Just like everything  in the world, everything is slowed down a little bit, but we’re still on target, James said of the film s release date on July 16th, 2021. In related news, comedian-actor Paul Scheer also confirmed this week that Don Cheadle (whose casting in Space Jam 2 was actually announced last July) is playing the film s villain. Live-action filming of Space Jam 2 wrapped in September of 2019.7. SCREENWRITER CONFIRMS NO SEQUEL FOR SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Until just two years ago, Disney and Lucasfilm were still committed to the Star Wars Story movies being an ongoing franchise to support the main franchise of films (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker). In addition to planned projects for Boba Fett and Obi-Wan (which will instead be a Disney+ series), the ending of Solo: A Star Wars Story (Fresh at 70%) also seemed to suggest there was narrative room for sequels (unlike, say, Rogue One, which ended exactly where Star Wars: A New Hope starts). The huge wrench in all of those plans, however, was that Solo only earned 2 million worldwide. We ve known for a while that the Star Wars Story movies were done, but there had been some speculation online that perhaps Alden Ehrenreich s version of young Han Solo could continue his adventures on something for Disney+. Well, screenwriter Jon Kasdan answered that question directly this week, and he pretty much shot down such talk, specifically saying, the D+ Star Wars slate is really pretty packed. Alden Ehrenreich has no feature films in the works, but he did land the lead role in the Brave New World series that will premiere on NBC s Peacock app.8. ZACK SNYDER S NEW BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE REVELATIONS (Photo by Warner Bros.)Like many filmmakers during the ongoing health crisis, Zack Snyder staged an online event recently for fans as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Rotten at 28%) celebrated its fourth anniversary. Especially of note were Snyder s comments about longtime Justice League member J onn J onnz, the Martian Manhunter (played by Harry Lennix) and Gal Gadot s Wonder Woman. Talking about the image of Gal Gadot (teasing her debut in Batman v Superman), Snyder said that the exact setting of Wonder Woman during World War I wasn t known while they were filming, with other possibilities (at the time) being either the Crimean War (1853 to 1856) or the American Civil War (1861 to 1865).9. MICHAEL BAY SIGNS NEW SONY DEAL STARTING WITH BLACK FIVE (Photo by Michael Germana/Everett Collection)This year marks 24 years now since Michael Bay s first and only Fresh film as director, which was also his second film, The Rock (Fresh at 66%). After directing his last Transformers film (The Last Knight, Rotten at 15%), Michael Bay moved over to Netflix with last year s 6 Underground (Rotten at 36%), starring Ryan Reynolds. Netflix has obviously been very much in the business of establishing new relationships and deals across the board, but Bay has chosen to go another direction, as he has signed a new deal that brings him back to Sony Pictures, the studio behind his very first ever film as director, Bad Boys. Bay s first new project under this new deal at Sony will be an ensemble drama called Black Five. Sony is reportedly still hoping for an early 2020 production start date with a big male lead. The premise is being kept secret, but it s reportedly got a gritty sci-fi element to it that s that’s very much in the vein other Bay films.
Children – his own – were also a big part of Prisoners and The Red Road writer Guzikowski’s inspiration for the series.“I have three young sons, and (I was) just thinking about them moving out into this world and their relationship with technology and my own relationship with technology, and just at what point will these things start to overlap, and I won t be able to tell the difference anymore? Where it really becomes part of me and I become a part of it,” Guzikowski said. “A lot of it, I think, came from just my lifelong obsession with science fiction, but I think it was really this idea about raising children in this world of technology. And also, if we were to start a new world somewhere, with all the knowledge of what went wrong on Earth, what would we choose to do? What would we take with us and what would we try and leave behind? And are we even able to make that choice, or are we just stuck in these cycles as human beings?”(Photo by HBO Max)Scott, meanwhile, appreciates some of the good things technology can do – like the efficiency of Zoom in allowing pandemic-era interviews to happen, and the fancy bookcase background we used for our Zoom chat with the director – but points out the old school methods are sometimes still the best for storytelling, even when telling a story about the future.“I draw, and I draw on paper. I film on paper before I get there, because the boards are very specific,” the Alien and The Martian director said. “They re literally drawn like the film, because I can. And I evolve an exercise on paper so I can literally sit on a scene in which I ve drawn and flipped through it, and literally I can see the scene. So right there, you re getting ideas about evolution of where you can go next with this. It s fascinating. Thank God for art school.”Raised By Wolves premieres Thursday, September 3 on HBO Max.

The 33 Best Boxing Movies of All TimePugilists have been popular camera subjects since the start boxing, at the time, being arguably the most interesting thing you do to another person in public. In the odd century-plus that s passed since, boxing cinema has evolved past mere punching for spectacle. It s about personal toil. Training. Strength. Sacrifice. Undying commitment to the physical vision. And then it s about hitting somebody for money. Or respect, sure.Tonight s title bout: The best-reviewed boxing movies ever! In one corner, we have heavyweight classics like Rocky and Raging Bull. In the other, hungry newcomers like Creed and Million Dollar Baby. And in another corner (we have a lot of corners): hard-hitting documentaries, repped by When We Were Kings and Unforgivable Blackness. And, yes, we re going international in this corner: see Knuckle all the way from Ireland, and China Heavyweight, all the way from, er, China. To be a contender, the movie needed to put up a Fresh rating after 20 reviews, before we ranked them with our weighted formula calculating a film s Tomatometer score, its number of reviews, and year of release.Think you got what it takes to take on the champs? Hit em where it counts! Hit em right in the 33 Best Boxing Movies of All Time!

We’re reaching the dog days of summer, people! Sometimes, you’ve just gotta post up in front of the air conditioner between trips to the beach and enjoy a nice TV binge. That’s where we come in. With several returning sophomore series and two long-running favorites bidding adieu, there’s plenty to keep you busy this August. Catch it all below.Dear White People 95% (Netflix)What it is: Based on writer-director Justin Simien’s 2014 film of the same name, Dear White People takes place on a predominantly white Ivy League college campus and, through the perspective of several different African-American characters, explores and satirizes the racial tensions, microaggressions, and social injustices experienced while there. Why you should watch it:  As funny as it is revealing, this ensemble piece for Netflix fearlessly goes where other network and primetime programs don’t dare to, not just representing the current social and political climate, but crystallizing lasting truths within it. Airtight scripts and a bevy of standout performances make the upcoming third season a must-watch for fans new and old. Season 3 premieres in full Aug. 2 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 10 hours (for the first two seasons)Preacher 87% (AMC)What it is: Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen teamed up back in 2016 to adapt Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s cult comic book about a preacher named Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) who’s on a violently allegorical quest to “find God” — plus vampires, exploding holy men, extraterrestrial entities, and gun-slinging exes (played by Ruth Negga, no less). The series, now entering its fourth and final season on AMC, has reached comparable cult status. Why you should watch it: If the above soundbite wasn’t at least enticing, this series is probably not for you. But if your interest is piqued, Preacher is sheer perfection. Unapologetically bloody, brazen, and bad to the bone, this series came at the height of peak genre TV and to this day runs with the best of them. Season 4 premieres Aug. 4 on AMC.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 25 hours (for the first three seasons)GLOW 92% (Netflix)What it is: From creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, GLOW (taken from the real-life ’80s entertainment series, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling), follows a pair of down-and-out actresses who unwittingly find themselves cast in a televised women’s wrestling league. Following both their personal and professional lives, the dramedy centers on Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), and the man who runs the league, Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron). Why you should watch it: On paper, GLOW sounds like the kind of series that’s just so crazy it might work. Then again, it is from producer Jenji Kohan (Weeds, Orange Is the New Black), so it boasts a creative team that has a track record of doing just that. Utterly unique in the world of the half-hour dramedy, this standout series is lead by a stellar cast of kickass ladies (and even more behind the camera). Season 3 premieres in full Aug. 9 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 10 hours (for the first two seasons)RELATED: Video: GLOW Stars Alison Brie, Marc Maron, and Betty Gilpin Play ‘Wrestler or Rapper’ Succession 94% (HBO)What it is: Succession is all about what happens when powerful people behave badly and — sometimes — are faced with consequences. Charting one media mogul family’s changing of the guard (with back-stabbing, side-dealing, and bribing a-plenty), the series, from creator Jesse Armstrong, stars Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Natalie Gold, and Emmy winner Brian Cox as the central Roy family patriarch. Why you should watch it: If HBO viewers love two things, it’s watching disparate characters fighting for a throne (hello, Game of Thrones) and extreme, dramatic family discord (Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Big Love need we go on?). Fortunately, the power-hungry media family of Succession has both in spades, and it boasts top-tier performances to match. Why else would it be recognized with a fistful of 2019 Emmy nominations, including best drama series? Catch up before season 2 premieres Aug. 11 on HBO.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 10 hours (for the first season)Lodge 49 93% (AMC)What it is: Set in the sun-drenched but dry-spelled locale of Long Beach, California, creator Jim Gavin’s Lodge 49 follows ex-surfer and current burnout Dud Dudley (Wyatt Russell, son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn) as he tries to get his life back together by going with the flow — a fate that brings him to the adrift, philosophically-minded community of Lodge 49. Why you should watch it: What an odd little series Lodge 49 is, but if you stick with it, the magic that’s at play slowly comes to the fore and makes the experience all the more worthwhile. To say much more of the fate that’s in store for viewers of this wholly-original hour-long comedy is to do a disservice to its long-view intention, but you won’t be sorry for following Russell’s “The Dude”–esque hero to the titular lodge’s doorstep. Season 2 premieres Aug. 12 on AMC.Where to watch it: Amazon, Google Play, Hulu, MicrosoftCommitment: Approx. 7.5 hours (for the first season)The Terror 87% (AMC)What it is: Based on Dan Simmons’ 2007 novel of the same name, The Terror is a horror anthology series from creators David Kajganich, Max Borenstein, and Alexander Woo. Season 1 takes the real-world tragedy of the 1845 disappearance and ultimate mass death aboard two British expedition ships and fictionalizes it as a tale of monsters and survival. Why you should watch it: While it’s an anthology series, you’d be remiss to skip out on The Terror’s first season before tuning into round 2: The Terror: Infamy. Creatively suspenseful, tragic, and altogether horrifying, it’s a 10-episode order that fans of the genre will love. Season 2 premieres Aug. 12 on AMC. Where to watch it: Amazon, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first season)RELATED: The Terror Truths Revealed in a Gruesome Finale and Insights from the Horror Series’ Showrunners Sacred Games 76% (Netflix)What it is: Netflix’s first original series made in India is a doozy of a police thriller. Based on Vikram Chandra s 2006 novel of the same name, Sacred Games follows Sartaj Singh of the Mumbai police as he battles personal demons and dives head-first into the city’s dark underbelly of crime and corruption in an effort to save it.Why you should watch it: The series begins with an anonymous call to Sartaj claiming that a looming disaster will wipe out Mumbai’s population in 25 days. Sacred Games’ race-against-the-clock premise does wonders here, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats and eager for more. Season 2 premieres in full Aug. 15 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)Mindhunter 97% (Netflix)What it is: Mindhunter follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench — co-founders, along with psychologist Wendy Carr, of the Bureau s Behavioral Science Unit — as they interview imprisoned serial killers in hopes of understanding patterns of behavior and solving open murder cases in 1977.Why you should watch it: Ripped from the pages of Mindhunter: Inside the FBI s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, Joe Penhall’s twisty series from executive producers David Fincher and Charlize Theron will keep you guessing to the very end — which is exactly why it became a bit of a phenomenon at the time of its 2017 premiere. Now, two years later, an excellent Jonathan Groff returns as Agent Ford to tackle one of the best-known killers of our time: Charles Manson. Season 2 premieres in full Aug. 16 on Netflix.Where to watch it: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first season)RELATED: Mindhunter Stars on Diving Too Deep Into Serial Killer Psychology, Hopes for Season 2 The Affair 86% (Showtime)What it is: As the old adage goes, love is a battlefield, and with The Affair, we’re here to witness some emotional warfare. The titular indiscretion comes about when Alison and Noah meet on Long Island, consummate their desires, and in turn destroy their respective marriages to Cole and Helen, respectively. The Affair is told through the four main players’ rotating perspectives. Why you should watch it: The Golden Globes love to honor a rookie series, but it’s not for nothing that The Affair swept the ceremony after its first season by winning best drama series and best lead actress for Ruth Wilson. Maura Tierney then went on to win for her supporting turn the following year. Male leads Dominic West and Joshua Jackson, though lacking trophies for their roles, are also stellar. Dense and emotionally trying as it may be, they each play characters that you’ll feel for as the dissipation of their happiness and potential reconciliation plays out each week. As the seasons progress, The Affair ups its drama and stakes until what is sure to be a blistering finale. Its fifth and final season premieres Aug. 25 on Showtime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 40 hours (for the first four seasons)Power 81% (Starz)What it is: From creator Courtney Kemp Agboh and starring Omari Hardwick as main anti-hero James St. Patrick, Power charts James’ life as he runs a popular nightclub in New York City while moonlighting as an underground drug kingpin. How he keeps it all together while leading a double life is just the tip of the iceberg of this series’ juicy, dramatic hit.Why you should watch it: Over the course of its five seasons, this gritty crime drama has succeeded with a formidable ensemble cast, providing criminally compelling and gloriously soapy performances. Its sixth and final season, which will be split into two halves between 2019 and and 2020, premieres Aug. 25 on Starz.Where to watch it: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: About 50 hours (for the five seasons)Like this? 恶魔城攻略 5. DANIEL CRAIG CONFIRMS THAT NO TIME TO DIE WILL BE HIS LAST FILM AS JAMES BOND (Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Columbia Pictures)After the four James Bond movies starring Daniel Craig all received Fresh Tomatometer scores (ranging from 63% for Spectre to a Certified Fresh 95% for Casino Royale), it might be easy to forget how the franchise was often received before 2006. Three of the four Pierce Bronsan Bonds (all but GoldenEye) received Rotten scores, and three of Roger Moore s films also received Rotten scores (Octopussy, A View to a Kill, and The Man with the Golden Gun). It s for that reason that we re a little sad but only a little, since it wasn t exactly a surprise about the confirmation this week from Daniel Craig that next year s No Time to Die (4/8/2020) will be his last Bond film. Although we hope that Craig s successor will continue Bond s Fresh streak, the history of the franchise also tells us that such an outcome is far from certain.6. HARRISON FORD S RUNAWAY HIT THE FUGITIVE IS GETTING REMADE(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)As we remarked in our coverage above of Channing Tatum revisiting The Maxx, we are entering an era when the lens of nostalgia is increasingly now focused on the 1990s. In film development news, nostalgia is most often a factor when we re talking about remakes (or reboots, revamps, reimaginings, etc), and Hollywood is definitely far from stopping their remake frenzy anytime soon. That brings us to the #3 box office hit of 1993 after Jurassic Park and Mrs. Doubtfire, which was the Harrison Ford thriller The Fugitive (an adaptation of the 1960s TV show). In 1998, Warner Bros. attempted to replicate that film s success with the spinoff U.S. Marshals, starring Tommy Lee Jones, but that film was a box office disappointment. We re now just under four years from the 20th anniversary of The Fugitive (8/6/1993), which might be why the studio is starting development on a reboot project being described as a new spin on the premise. Warner Bros. has hired director Albert Hughes to work on their reboot of The Fugitive, but Hughes brings a bit of a mixed bag of Tomatometers to the project, with only two (Menace II Society and Alpha) of his six films as director earning Fresh ratings.
