Kim, Nicky is seen protecting herself and those closest to her with jabs, strikes, spins and kicks while barely breaking a sweat (and sometimes to the surprise of her siblings; Shannon Dang’s tech-wiz Althea and Jon Prasida’s medical student Ryan).“It definitely conflates my own sense of self confidence,” Liang admitted during a recent phone interview with Rotten Tomatoes.“Especially with the things that are happening in the world right now with Asian hate crimes and violence, I find myself walking on the street and being, like, OK what fight choreography did I learn that I can translate if need be at the drop of a hat right now?” she said.Fight training is a relatively new skill set for Liang. Although she has a background in dance, martial arts was a completely new art form for her when she was cast as Nicky. Training began when she was still busy at her previous job on The CW’s Legacies. That Atlanta-set show’s stunt coordinator, David Morizot, showed her basic moves between takes before she worked with stunt coordinator Sam Ly to prep for the Kung Fu pilot. Then it was an aggressive three-to five-hours-a-day schedule for two weeks where  “they molded me and they whipped me into shape,” she said.(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Although she’s not allowed to do any of the intense wire work lest she get injured and cause a delay in production, she said, “you can maybe expect to see at least 65% me” on screen during the fight scenes and that “I try to do as much as possible because it s also just really fun and really empowering and I feel really cool when I do it.” But she gives credit to her stunt double, Megan Hui, and others in that department “if I ever look cool and badass and powerful during a fight scene.”The show also both fits in with the other programs on The CW and stands out from them. It’s one of the few options on that channel that concentrates on a woman and is the only one with a predominately AAPI cast. And, although Kung Fu is about a woman crimefighter and counts Arrowverse kingpin Greg Berlanti as one of its executive producers, Liang’s lead doesn’t come with either superhero powers (like The Flash or Supergirl) or – depending on the season of Batwoman family connections or the luck of finding the high-tech suit of a lost vigilante.“I think it s pretty cool that Nicky’s just a regular person who has a skill set and wants to use it for good,” Liang said. “She s not a superhero and she s not necessarily wanting to be a hero, but she is very heroic.”(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)Kung Fu also has the hefty task of demystifying the world of martial arts, an art form that Americans may find alluring and stereotypical when we see it portrayed by people of Asian descent (like in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in Bruce Lee’s films) or as agro when portrayed by white men (like in TV series like Cobra Kai, Arrow, or even the original Kung Fu).“The great thing about our show is the diversity all around that s happening,” Liang said, mentioning the Kim-led diverse writers room in particular and that she and other cast members have been reading Charles Yu’s National Book Award-winning Interior Chinatown, which discusses both immigrant Asian stories and TV’s depiction of them.“I think, because we’ve so long been on the receiving end of this voyeuristic [depiction] of ‘the Orient’ and the mysticism of Asian-ness or otherness, we really know how it feels .. to be under that lens. In the first episode, Nicky is angry that her mother’s (Tan Kheng Hua s Mei-Li) big dream for her was that her daughter attend Harvard. This could be perceived as trumpeting a tired trope, but wouldn’t most parents want their kids to get good grades and go to a respected university?“The interesting thing about stereotypes, from my perspective, is that sometimes they are true,” Liang said, adding that she had “kind of a Tiger Mom growing up [who] did want me to be a genius” and that “I took Abacus lessons for some reason.”“I think the problem with stereotypes is if that s the only thing we know about that person and that s the only thing that they re defined by,” Liang said, explaining that Mei-Li may come across as a Tiger Mom in the first episode, “but we also get to see her backstory and get to see her care for her kids and where she s coming from.”With Nicky, Liang said, “She was the kid who was pressured to go to Harvard and to be everything that her parents wanted her be [but] we also get to see her break out of that. We get to see her forge her own path, fall in love, fight with her siblings. Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. The studio moved quickly to quash the rumors, but it now seems clear the film will exist in its own universe with a HBO Max spin-off series already in development.Black Adam(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow  huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. Pictures)How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, so their film worlds are definitely connected. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable.In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart.How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction.The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground.How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. His appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the very nature of the Multiverse offer some glimmers of hope, however.Joker 2(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Thanks to the success of the first Joker, a follow-up was inevitable, but details remained scarce through 2020. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script.How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon. There are plenty of feature-length films heading our way, as well. The most highly anticipated, according to Rotten Tomatoes users, is Enola Holmes, the Netflix film starring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock s spunky younger sister. (Sherlock Holmes, we should mention, is played by another Netflix star, The Witcher’s Henry Cavill.)The top 10 most anticipated TV and streaming movies is a good mix of scripted and documentary — both Belushi, about the late comedian Jim Belushi, and Crazy, Not Insane, about what makes a serial killer , made the list. In addition to the grown-up fare, there are a few films tailor-made for a younger-skewing audience (Disney+ original Secret Society of Second-Born Royals among them).Two high-profile remakes are also on the list — Black Beauty, with Kate Winslet lending her voice to this contemporary adaptation of the novel, and Netflix s highly anticipated, star-studded remake of Daphne du Maurier s thriller Rebecca, featuring Armie Hammer and Lily James in the first feature film take on the book since Alfred Hitchcock s 1940 version.Disagree with the survey results? Ghcxuf While sports fans can debate the results of last night s Big Game, fans of Marvel Studios (and sports fans who like Marvel movies) took note of an ad for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which aired shortly after kickoff. The tone was serious as it offered some new glimpses of an Earth after half its population disappeared into dust. But it also suggested a call to action for those with enhanced abilities to upend the new status quo. And as it featured substantial new footage from the movie, let s take a look at some of the things we learned from the 30-second television ad.The Survivor Support Group Supports A Time Jump(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the opening moments, we see a changed New York and an empty stadium to reinforce the monumental loss of life in Avengers: Infinity War. In voice over, we re told some have moved on. The scene cuts to a support group for survivors of the catastrophe Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) among them. All of which supports earlier reports that Endgame would take place some time after the Snap at the end of Infinity War. The length of that time jump is still up for debate with the earliest reports suggesting a real-time gap of roughly a year while others suggest Endgame will pick up several years after Infinity War. Either way, we re definitely getting a Leftovers vibe from the support group.Rocket Is An Avenger(Photo by Marvel Studios)We ll get to Rocket s big moment in the ad later. First, let s take a look at moment late in the spot when Steve s voiceover tells us the Avengers have not moved on. The dialogue is presented alongside a slow motion walk of the remaining Avengers. Rocket is among the group as they Well, let s assume they re on their way to deal with Thanos (Josh Brolin). The earlier Endgame teaser echoed a moment from Marvel Comics  The Infinity Gauntlet storyline in which the Avengers track Thanos down and find his armor propped up as a scarecrow. Its pretty clear elements of The Infinity Gauntlet will inform Endgame the way Thanos s Snap anchored Infinity War.Alternatively, the slow-motion walk may appear early in the film as the silhouettes of both War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) who are featured in a moment of their own appear to be missing. As some astute viewers pointed out, there is also the possibility that an unidentified character was mysteriously edited out of some of the footage in the trailer, including the slow-motion walk.Thor Is Spaceworthy(Photo by Marvel Studios)Our key glimpse of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the ad sees him looking out at a lush, green environment. It resembles the place Thanos viewed in Infinity War s closing moments, further suggesting the Avengers will take the battle back to the Mad Titan. There is also the possibility that Thor is looking out across Wakanda, judging from the landscape, but it s difficult to tell. Considering Thor s new weapon Stormbringer can conjure up the Bifrost or a Bifrost like means of interstellar travel we re going to assume he s been using it to search for Thanos and survivors of Infinity War s space team. But what ship is he on in the ad?The Benatar Survives?(Photo by Marvel Studios)In one of the more curious glimpses in the 30-second spot, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) appear to be repairing the Benatar the now-abandoned Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship. This could be a moment from their initial departure from Titan or a flashback to happier times, as the first Endgame trailer revealed a lonely, distraught Tony recording a final message to Pepper Potts. But it could also be a moment from later in the film when the Avengers are reunited and use the Benatar to carry the whole team to Thanos. Well, presuming that s the ship on which we see Thor a few moments later in the ad.Consider the moment when Earthbound Avengers Steve Rogers, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Rhodey, and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) walk out of their headquarters and look up at something just out of frame. It could be Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), of course, but perhaps she brought the Benatar (and Thor) with her.Rocket Is First Through The Door(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rocket s key moment in the ad sees him bursting through the door of a seemingly simple shack near an unidentified coastline. This could easily be the shack Thanos built for himself on his retirement world, but it could also be something on Earth. The prominence of the seaside and fishing nets in the background to say nothing of the very Earth-like latch on the door suggest more familiar terrain, but perhaps Thanos always wanted a quiet life by the sea. Then again, maybe Rocket turned to fishing during his time on Earth and it s his seaside shack.Yeah, that doesn t seem likely, considering the guns strapped to his sides.Clint Barton Is Hawkeye Again?Ryan FujitaniThe earlier Endgame trailer prominently featured a sword-weilding Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in an apparent switch of persona to Ronin an identity his comic book counterpart adopted for a time. But in his Big Game Ad appearance, Clint appears to have a pair of quivers strapped to his back. It is fairly safe to assume Black Widow finds him working as Ronin and convinces him to come back to the Avengers, restoring his costumed persona and key gimmick in the process. After all, what would an Avengers movie (besides Infinity War) be without Hawkeye?Steve Rogers Has His Shield Back(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the lead-up to Infinity War, reports suggested Steve would take on the identity of Nomad, another Steve Rogers alias from the comics. This turned out to be more of a thematic idea than a literal one, as Steve was in fact roaming, but his costume turned out to be a very weathered version of the one he wore in Captain America: Civil War. That said, Steve lacked a proper shield throughout Infinity War, continuing an idea from Civil War about Steve s loss of identity. But as seen in the trailer, Steve has his shield back. Since Endgame is the presumed last stand of Captain America, it makes sense that he would be visually restored to his former self. It happens in the comics all the time, so a moment like that should occur in a movie like Endgame.Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere on April 26. 😈😈

In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, Moonlight cinematographer James Laxton shares how a surprise storm disrupted production, but added lasting richness to the film s most enduring scene. VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: Moonlight (2016) 98%Moonlight is by any measure a landmark film: the first LGBTQ-themed movie to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards, the first film with a mostly black cast to win that prize, too, and, according to our Tomatometer, the best-reviewed LGBTQ film of all time. And yet beyond the accolades, and laurels, and Certified Fresh badges, the movie was and remains potent because the story it splashed onto the screen – in so many vivid hues – was one most viewers had never seen. That story began life in 2003 as the semi-autobiographical In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, an unpublished play by writer Tarell Alvin McCraney (whose Choir Boy is up for Best Play at this year s Tony Awards). Screenwriter and director Barry Jenkins would adapt it for the big screen some 12 years later, breaking out its tale of Chiron, a black man in Miami whose homosexuality is at war with his and his world s expectations of masculinity, into three distinct chapters: Little, Chiron, and Black. Each showed Chiron at a different age, played by different actors, at different points of his struggle. Jenkins enlisted college friend and cinematographer James Laxton, who had lensed the director s debut film Medicine for Melancholy, to give each section, and the film itself, a distinct look. Here, Laxton reveals how he worked to achieve Jenkins vision and tell Chiron s story.Trevante Rhodes as Chiron in Moonlight. I think he was maybe 21. We were at Florida State University Film School in Tallahassee, Florida, two young kids who found our way into this film education world. We were really excited about trying to find new ways to express ourselves, and I think first bonded over the things that kids bond over all the time: similar tastes in music, or food. Once we became friends, we started talking about films, and all of a sudden also seemed to share a great interest in the kinds of films we were interested in watching. Then, as happens in film school, you start to think about what kind of films you want to make, and then for me, what those films look like. We started to realize we shared a great deal in aesthetics and in terms of how we wanted to visually tell stories. That friendship very quickly became a collaborative one. I don t know that much has changed, to be totally honest, in whatever it s been… 17, 18 years or so of this relationship. It s a really wonderful one.” Barry says he s working on something, and it s about kids in Miami. “Learning about what films Barry wants to make is an interesting thing. It s different than any other director I work with in that I find out about [projects in] whispery, secret-y sort of side conversations. He won t be all official like, ‘Let s have a meeting on Wednesday and let s sit down and read the script together, and hash it out.’ It evolves over long periods of time; over dinner, or at a friend s house, he ll mention he s working on something, and it s about kids in Miami, or he found a project he s interested in, and it sounds like we ll maybe make this in the near future. So it first starts there. I feel like I heard about Moonlight first in a very casual setting. It was sort of [the way] you might find out your friend is getting married in a few months, or is engaged.”Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders in Moonlight. (Photo by David Bornfriend/ © A24 /courtesy Everett Collection) Images that would grab you by the scruff of your neck and take you inside this world and not let you look away from the screen. “I think we started to share imagery back and forth [in the lead up to Moonlight], which is what we often do: So I ll send him a series of photographs, he’ll send me a series of photographs. Very quickly after sharing of images back and forth, it became clear the movie wanted to have a very, very bold sensibility visually, and have images that would really grab you by the scruff of your neck and take you inside this world and not let you look away from the screen. To us, that had to do with strong color palettes with shooting in anamorphic aesthetics, where you re having these epic sensibilities apply to what in the material was very subtle and nuanced. That combination of epicness and intimacy is what Moonlight came to look like. That s how I see it, anyway, and that’s largely to do with just those early conversations about wanting those bold sensibilities to be at the forefront of our storytelling.”THE MOMENT: The Swimming LessonIn the first chapter of Moonlight,  Little, Jenkins offers one of the most moving and often surprising relationships between a boy and a father figure we ve seen in cinema. Juan (played by Mahershala Ali, who would win the first of his two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for the role) is a drug dealer whose softer, nurturing side is drawn out by Chiron, known as Little here. In a scene that defines the relationship, and came to define the film for many, Juan takes Chiron out off of a Miami Beach and teaches him to swim. One of the concepts in the film that s discussed is this idea of love generally, and more specifically trust in our parental figures. I think there s a lot of conflict within Moonlight s coming-of-age [story], of Chiron s journey finding adult figures that can help guide him through some difficult moments in his youth. Juan is one of these characters who really champions and gives this sense of trust to Little, or to Chiron. I think he does that specifically within this swimming scene, which for us had to have a sense of intimacy and a sense of struggle with it. There’s a lot of symbolism that is going on in that scene, especially visually. That iconic imagery that is epic in its sort of nature… we knew that was going to be part of the scene. Our approach in terms of camera work was to try to make the scene feel intimate, and as nuanced, and small, in a way, because the scene conceptually was going to be so big. If we could provide an intimate portrayal of it, in terms of how the scene is lensed, we felt like that would be the trick, so to speak. That would be the way into our audience s hearts and minds. That was how we came about this idea of, well, let s get the camera out into the water.” We wanted it to feel like a struggle, throwing me out there with this big camera unit, trying to fight the currents myself in the same way that Little is. “There are some pictures of me online struggling with this massive, behemoth underwater housing [a substantial camera case] – and we shot this film anamorphically, before some of these cameras that now are much smaller were available to us, so it was a very large contraption that you see me wrestling around the surf with. But I think that was in many ways part of it. Barry and I are so often trying to find ways to visually represent a character s perspective; [that’s] how we go about making choices photographically. It s all about character for us, and so for me, it was about trying to have a swimming lesson on my own in many ways, trying to learn how to use this camera in the water. I by no means am an underwater cinematographer. I mean, there are people who do that job specifically, and they re really great at it. We didn t necessarily want that, though. We wanted it to feel like a struggle… throwing me out there with this big thing and trying to fight the currents myself in the same way that Little is fighting the currents. We felt like there would be something in there, in the struggle between how it s being visually represented and then what the scene is about at its core – this sense of trust that Juan is giving this young man in the water.”Hibbert and Ali during the swimming lesson scene. There s a storm coming.’ “I think we had scheduled at least half a day to shoot this scene, specifically the water, swimming portion of the scene; we thought we had about six hours or so. So, we re setting up the equipment, we re getting the camera into the water, which takes a little while. Meanwhile, Barry, who’s from Miami, is ankle deep in the surf looking out at the horizon. I m not from Florida myself, but he quickly, being native to the space, realized, ‘Oh, look. There s a storm coming.’ He might as well be a meteorologist. I think he said that we have about an hour-and-a-half to get this scene shot. He was probably about right: it was about an hour-and-a-half or so later we had to run for cover, because a massive rainstorm had come. We had to hide underneath all kinds of tents and take a very long break. I mean, it was hours before we got back out there. When Barry alerted us to the storm approaching, we gathered our equipment together as quickly as possible, ran out into the water, and in some respects… I don t want to say improvised, because what is in the script is on camera, if not in the exact way it was depicted. But we had a lot more shots in our shot list, and [were going to be] much more organized about capturing it. But I think because of the elements approaching, we had to really get out there and just specifically have a swimming lesson, and let Mahershala as Juan guide this young man, and [have] me out in the water, as well, trying to capture this swimming lesson as it came. It [was shot] almost like a documentary, less so like a film in some respects. I think in the end, all for the good. Sometimes your reaction to moments is as good as a well detailed plan might be. Sometimes it s even better.” By the end of the scene, these dark rainclouds have come over us. “The sky does change on us at some point. We begin the scene in beautiful, somewhat partially clouded skies, and by the end of it, these dark rainclouds have kind of come over us, and as we end that scene, it kind of alludes to what is coming in the journey of Chiron, this impending cloud. THE IMPACT: A Clearer HorizonMoonlight s success announced some major new talents. Ali, Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, Hibbert, and Janelle Monae would all become in-demand actors – especially Ali, who would win a second Academy Award for Green Book in 2019. McCraney would write a TV series for OWN and win stage acclaim on Broadway for Choir Boy. Jenkins follow-up film, the adaptation of James Baldwin s If Beale Street Could Talk, was one of the most anticipated movies of the fall last year, and would go on to become one of the best-reviewed films of the year (Jenkins would win Best Director at the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards and the film would win Best Picture that same night). Laxton was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Moonlight, and his work on Beale Street honored throughout last year s awards season. The cinematographer says he didn t expect all the red carpets when Moonlight wrapped its 21-day shoot in Miami back in 2015; he simply says the crew were proud of the work they d done. Today, he says he s proud that the work they did has connected with so many people, and continues to do so. Mahershala brings a number of things with him when he comes on to a set There s someone there who s ready for anything. “Mahershala definitely brings a number of things with him when he comes on to a set. There s a professionalism, of course, but there s a strength, and there s also a calmness; there s just someone there who is ready for anything. I don t know Mahershala really well; I know him from this experience filming the movie. But at the same time, he s such a giver. I think in a way he brought not just him as Juan [to the scene], but there s something of Mahershala in there, too. I don t think Alex knew how to swim, or at least proficiently swim in that moment, and so, I think, yeah, Mahershala, again, in the sense of really getting out there and us all, camera included, kind of going through a swimming lesson in real life, in real time, with the storm coming over us… I don t think that a different person could ve done that. I think it s so him. It’s called Western Stars, and it marks the feature directorial debut of rock legend Bruce Springsteen.Co-directed by Springsteen and his longtime collaborator Thom Zimny, Western Stars is part concert film, part meditation on the complexities of getting older. With some of the film set on Springsteen’s farm and some set out among the quiet stillness of the Californian desert, Western Stars isn’t as big, bold, and flashy as both The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but all three films contemplate the effects of aging, of confronting regrets and mistakes, of trying to embrace what’s there instead of what isn’t. Springsteen, who turned 70 last month, is certainly aware of the similarities between the pictures – and even more revealing: Irishman and Hollywood are two of his favorite films of the year.Seated comfortably on a couch inside his New Jersey recording studio, dressed in classic Springsteen attire (blue jeans, jean jacket and white undershirt, natch), the music legend and now film director spoke at length with Rotten Tomatoes about how his love of film has inspired him as a man and as an artist. Also, the noir stuff, like Out of the Past with Robert Mitchum… that was a huge film for me. And then there were more modern things, like Martin Scorsese’s pictures – but also I remember at the time I wrote ‘Nebraska,’ I had seen a Terrence Malick picture for the first time. [His films] are meditative; lots of voiceover… Days of Heaven, Tree of Life. The soundscape for Nebraska really came from Badlands, the Malick picture.”Springsteen told Rotten Tomatoes he began watching a lot of films when he was about 27, “from ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ forward.” He said: “I became a bit of a film buff; I was looking at other artists and the way they were conceptualizing their work. So of course, I ran into John Ford, and I thought it was interesting how he was working on certain consistent themes in every picture. How every picture sort of related to another one in certain ways; you had the cast of characters and an ensemble that he worked with really steadily. You know, I had my band and I was interested in telling this longer story where each album would relate to another in a certain way.”That consistency in collaboration is what also drew Springsteen to Scorsese’s work, and it’s what is top of mind when he discusses the director’s epic new work, The Irishman.“With The Irishman, it was beautiful to see that cast working together again,” he said. “To see Marty at the top of his game… those guys and that history, you’re never going to see that again. That group of actors – there’s never going to be a group of actors quite like that again. Instead of touring with it, he created this film as a record of the music and the stories behind each song, but also of his love for his wife, Patti Scialfa, who plays beside him on each tune with the duo backed by an orchestra inside an old barn on Springsteen’s sprawling farm in New Jersey. The film – featuring songs about lost, often broken men in search of redemption interspersed with thoughtful, almost-poetic words of wisdom from the Boss himself – feels like it’s about a man letting go of his mistakes in order to embrace the love that’s all around him.We asked Springsteen if that was an accurate take on Western Stars as a whole.“That’s as good an explanation of it as any, you know,” he said with a smile. “It’s about a trip or a journey that everyone has to make. When you’re young, you wanna do what you wanna do when you wanna do it. Individual freedom means an awful amount to you. But as you get into your thirties and certainly your forties, life begins to thin out, if that’s how you’re approaching it. And so [you’re on this] pursuit of a fuller life, and in a very strange way it’s the domestic constraints [that] provide you with a freer life. As you get older, you have a home, a place to gather yourself and reasons for the work that you’re performing. The definition of what freedom is alters as you grow older, and so the film is about the way that that word changes as time passes by. But it’s also about the price you pay if you don’t grow or change as that time passes by.”As he so often does at all of his shows, Springsteen ends the film with a more celebratory encore, covering Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy,” as if to leave audiences with one last anecdote: never stop chasing your dreams.“The character in the film makes this journey, and it needed to be celebrated a little bit,” he said. “When the song comes up, it’s a release for the audience. It’s also slightly connected to the genre I was working in; Glen Campbell was an inspiration for a lot of the song stylings.Of course, it’s hard not to discuss “Rhinestone Cowboy” and the aging cowboys featured in Western Stars and The Irishman without also bringing up the aging cowboys at the center of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Springsteen not only told us that he had seen the film, but also that he’s a big fan of Tarantino’s latest. “I did see it, and I thought, yeah, that’s a funny little coincidence,” he said when the thematic similarities were brought up. “I really loved it – that was one of my favorite pictures of the past year. It was quite touching, and quite lovely.”Western Stars is in limited release October 25.

In the end, she lived into her old age, so death didn t come for a long time, the series creator noted of the poet, who died at age 55. But we wanted whoever played Death to be kind of larger than life and to bring a sense of just incredible playfulness and wild coolness to the role, and I think Wiz was just the dream of who would do that. And then as soon as he read the script, he just really connected with the humor and the just the vibe of the show, and it was kind of amazing to me how easily he just slipped in to the whole thing. (Photo by Apple TV+)Considering she’s playing a young women who didn’t find literary fame until after her death, Steinfeld also relished the opportunity to explore Dickinson in a way that hadn’t been done before — to give voice to the young woman s thoughts and to act out the dark, fantastical elements of her poems in a way that’s not entirely expected. “I fortunately and unfortunately knew very, very little [about her] before this project. I loved that I could do my deep dive into her with the little facts that are known that are out there, but we got to dig even deeper and basically tell this story of what we think the inside of her mind might look like or feel like or sound like,” the one-time Oscar nominee said. I mean, you could make an entire series off of one poem, and we had all of these poems and it was so great to pull from that and from her imagination and sort of combine it with ours.”Smith was reading a biography of the poet when inspiration hit. I was so struck by, I guess, the ironies of her life and the fact that this woman was so passionate and fierce in writing almost 2,000 of the greatest, strangest poems ever written, but practically none of them were ever seen or appreciated or published while she lived, the series creator said. (Photo by Apple TV+)More than just the story of a brilliant artist, the series specifically explores the limitations Dickinson would have encountered in the 1850s due to her gender and presents this as the main reason she was only taken seriously as a master poet posthumously. The series also relates that she was expected to marry and become a dutiful housewife, social norms that Emily of the series refuses. Gender parity — in everything from the pay gap to #MeToo and Time’s Up — is a conversation that continues today, particularly in creative fields and entertainment. Steinfeld could relate to Dickinson’s circumstances. “I think that there are so many themes in this show that are wildly similar to events that we go through today in life, especially women,” she said. “But I do think that this is a character who fought against every constraint. And I do find that as a young woman today, we re constantly fighting to be heard and understood. We have come a very long way and I m very thankful for that, but I think the show will sort of open a lot of people s eyes to the reality of what we re still dealing with.”(Photo by Apple TV+)These themes also appealed to 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Jane Krakowski, who here plays Emily’s domineering, by-the-book mother (also named Emily). “It had such parallels to today s young modern women, and that really surprised me,” she told Rotten Tomatoes, but for her role, she was the enforcer of such limiting expectations. “I think the parents represent the times, the world that we were living in, that patriarchal world.” Krakowski recounted how playing a stern-but-dutiful housewife herself isn’t exactly a glass-slipper fit. Her Mrs. Dickinson practically lives in the kitchen, an arena in which she’s not a natural. “First of all, this part was a real stretch for me because I can t cook anything in a kitchen,” Krakowski joked. “She is known as the greatest homemaker of Amherst, in all of New England. My friends who know me very well are like, ‘We can t believe 90 percent of your scenes are in a kitchen.’” Fortunately, she was up for the challenge, not only spending most of her time in the kitchen, but even getting down and dirty in the house work.“We did it so real. We actually were plucking those chickens…. It s really hard to get it off your fingers….
