bob88体育平台登录采用百度引擎2(Baidu 7)(Photo by DreamWorks)Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are currently two of the absolute biggest properties out there, so it might be easy to forget how much of a niche market sci-fi and comic-book fans in general would have represented just 20 years ago. Before San Diego Comic-Con became a huge phenomenon garnering coverage from pretty much every news outlet around, genre fans were often ostracized and mocked by mainstream media. Everything changed on Christmas Day of 1999, though, when we got an adventure-comedy that was not only a love letter to sci-fi shows like Star Trek, but also one of the first movies to embrace fan culture as something positive.Galaxy Quest has a simple premise: what if aliens watched a sci-fi TV show from Earth and, believing it was real, asked the stars of the show for help in defeating an alien general? The film overcame production issues, including a change in directors from Harold Ramis to one who had barely done any feature films – and certainly no sci-fi movies – to become a cult hit that remains beloved decades later. It was even voted as one of the best Star Trek films by fans (higher than Star Trek Into Darkness). For it’s 20th anniversary, let’s walk in the suns of Warvan and explore why the film that got us to never give up and never surrender still endures to this day.It Nails the Fan Convention Atmosphere(Photo by DreamWorks)Back in the ‘90s, pop culture conventions were niche events, not at all like the juggernauts akin to San Diego Comic-Con. When Galaxy Quest begins, we meet a group of washed-up actors from the eponymous fictional sci-fi TV series at one such convention. The vast majority of the fans are dressed up in cheap costumes based on their favorite characters, and they’re being amped up by a moderator who appeared in one episode (played by Sam Rockwell). When the actors finally show up, it’s a sight that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a similar event. The main actor in Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen, arguably at the peak of his career), thinks too highly of himself, arriving late and soaking in all the attention from the fans while overshadowing his former co-workers. He occupies an entire table himself to sign autographs, while the rest of the cast are forced to share a smaller one. Alexander Dane (the late, great Alan Rickman), another actor on the show, has become absolutely fed up with making convention appearances and dealing with fan after fan coming up to him and repeating his famous catchphrase – to be fair, he did play Richard III.Galaxy Quest depicts not only the absurdity and the pettiness of it all, but also the love that goes into attending these fan conventions. It also predicted the rise of these conventions in ways no one could have foreseen back in 1999. The film, clearly inspired by Star Trek and its loyal fanbase, came at a time when these types of events drew just a few thousand fans. Now, similar events have become so big that they now encapsulate the entirety of pop-culture, and the biggest one, the aforementioned San Diego Comic-Con, draws in over 100,000 fans annually, with major studios dropping big announcements and news outlets reporting on them.It s a Legitimately Good Sci-Fi MovieOne of the reasons Galaxy Quest remains as beloved as it is today is that, unlike many parodies and spoofs, it still makes the effort to be a good sci-fi movie in and of itself. After Harold Ramis left the project, a relatively unknown director named Dean Parisot signed on, and he made sure that the film looked better than just a cheap knock-off of old Star Trek episodes, which is what the original plan called for. In the newly released documentary Never Surrender, producer Mark Johnson says that Parisot directed the film as a drama, focusing on the characters and elevating the movie from operating merely as an extended joke. That feeling of legitimacy comes from the fact that the technical aspects of the film make it look as good as most sci-fi movies from the time. Where Spaceballs and other parodies used their lower budget to make fun of the movies they’re parodying via cheaper recreations, Galaxy Quest aims to look as good as  if not better than some of the Star Trek movies themselves. The special effects were created by Industrial Light and Magic, who had plenty of experience with the Star Trek franchise, and production designer Linda DeScenna, who did set decoration for the first Star Trek movie, also did the set decorations for Galaxy Quest.Never Surrender offers the impression that there were some differences of opinion on how “cheesy” the movie should ultimately be, but the end result erred on the side of realism in order to properly sell the drama of the characters. The creature effects were even created by Stan Winston, known for his work on The Thing, Jurassic Park, Aliens and more. Winston and his team meticulously recreated both the cheap effects that would be appropriate for the show-within-the-movie, like the headpiece worn by Alan Rickman’s character, and the look of the “real” aliens, who might feel right at home in the bigger-budget Star Wars or Star Trek movies. What makes Galaxy Quest special is that the movie is more than a parody, it s an homage. It s not funny at the expense of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows, and it doesn’t turn the staples of the genre into dick jokes like Spaceballs does. Instead, the film plays out as commentary, and it s funny because everyone who worked on the movie loved and understood the genre and knew what elements were worth poking a bit of fun at, and what elements needed to be played completely straight. It Pays Respect to Obsessive FansArguably the main reason why Galaxy Quest became such a hit with fans is the way the movie approaches fandom. This is a movie that came out well before the mainstreaming of geek culture and Comic-Con, before Game of Thrones and superheroes became part of the day-to-day conversation. In other words, the nerds and sci-fi fans of 1999 were more accustomed to being portrayed as basement-dwelling, D D-playing social misfits.Galaxy Quest‘s treatment of this niche culture is best represented by Brandon (Justin Long), a trivia-obsessed fan who uses his knowledge of the show to guide Nesmith and his crew through a replica of the spaceship and save their lives. The movie doesn’t ostracize fans or treat their obsessive cataloguing of pointless details as a waste of time. On the contrary, it treats fan obsession as an asset, which was innovative and way ahead of its time. The movie also depicts how fans can at times mistake fiction for reality. We learn that the Thermians, the aliens who have come to ask Nesmith and his fellow actors for help, have based their entire culture around the TV show, which they consider to be historical documents. Their enthusiasm at watching Nesmith step into the bridge is infectious, and they try to emulate the virtues of the characters in the show, while being completely blind to the many, many flaws of the extremely human people behind the costumes. By the end, their enthusiasm even manages to make the actors themselves embrace the heroic values their characters represent. Nesmith has been so immersed in the success his role had afforded him that he had never considered the positive effect it had on others, how he actually inspired them to do good, until the moment he becomes an actual hero – all thanks to some alien fans.It Predicted the Power of Fan Culture(Photo by DreamWorks)After the actors save the Thermians and return to Earth, they are greeted by a wave of enthusiastic fans at the convention, who cheer at the sight of a literal spaceship crashing into the convention center. The ending of the film reveals that Galaxy Quest the TV show subsequently enjoyed a new wave of popularity that resulted in a revival series, thanks to the fans.In this way, Galaxy Quest was again ahead of its time, as it came out before studios and networks realized the power of fans, but predicted that fans would be able to bring a beloved show back from the dead. It came out a mere three years before the Fox series Firefly, which was cancelled in 2003 after just one season and eventually saw a feature film continuation in 2005 after fans campaigned to bring it back.Though only 20 years old, Galaxy Quest feels like the beginning of a new era for nerd culture. It coincided with the release of Star Wars: Episode I and the rise of blogs and sites that generated online debate. It foresaw the release of major geek-friendly film franchises that weren t merely cult favorites but bona fide blockbusters, like X-Men, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Fan conventions became gathering places for hundreds of thousands of like-minded individuals to camp out for days on end in order to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop-culture stars or a trailer for the new movie in their favorite franchise. Fans now not only drive the box office, but they manage to revive their favorite franchises much faster than they used to – just look at the near-instant renewal of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Galaxy Quest may not be widely regarded as a key player in the rise of geek culture and fandom, but it should be; its influence can be seen in everything from the 2009 Star Trek reboot to Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If there’s one thing this cult classic has taught us, it is to never give up, and never surrender.Galaxy Quest was released on December 25, 1999.

(Photo by © MGM, @ Netflix, @ Marvel Studios)This year, Halloween returned and Black Panther arrived. Wreck-It Ralph broke (and fixed) the internet, and Jim Halpert (a.k.a. John Krasinski) screamed silently in A Quiet Place. One movie even scored an actual zero on the Tomatometer… Do you remember which one?And on TV, Emma Stone and Jonah Hill joined forces in Netflix’s Maniac, The Fab Five of Queer Eye warmed our hearts, and NBC’s Manifest crashed while The Good Place soared (or is it the other way around?). Were critics as wowed by that long take and lingering camera in The Haunting of Hill House as we were? You don’t have to have seen every movie or every series to know its score — though perhaps you’re that big of a film and television buff, that you’ll have seen many of this year’s releases anyhow. The question now is: How well do you know Rotten Tomatoes? Test your knowledge below by guessing the Tomatometer scores of this year’s movies and TV series.

own good.Adapting Source Material For Film And TV (Room 6A, 4:15 p.m.)But if you want to learn more about how TV producers adapt comics into television shows, The Walking Dead executive producer David Alpert, Deadly Class co-executive producer Maggie Bandur, former Iron Fist showrunner M. Raven Metzner, and former Luke Cage producer Akela Cooper will chat about how they walk fan-favorite comic books through the development process and on to cable channels or streaming services. It may explain why superhero costumes often disappear and why some shows look nothing like their four-color counterparts.FridayDuckTales (Room 6A, 11:45 a.m.)Start your Friday at Comic-Con with DuckTales executive producer Matt Youngberg, co-EP Francisco Angones, and stars Ben Schwartz, Bobby Moynihan, Kate Micucci, and Paget Brewster as they discuss the upcoming third season and show footage from a never-before-seen episode. Will it be a whole episode? You never know with the series inspired by the Donald Duck comics of Carl Barks.Fear The Walking Dead (Hall H, 12 p.m.)Now a traditional Hall H staple, the cast and crew of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead will grace the stage to dodge questions about upcoming episodes. Panelists include cast members Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Maggie Grace, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Austin Amelio, Alexa Nisenson, Karen David, Jenna Elfman, and Rubén Blades. Walking Dead boss Scott M. Gimple, showrunners and executive producers Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg, executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, and Greg Nicotero will also be on hand to help the cast avoid spoilers.DC Super Hero Girls New Episode Premiere And Q A (Room 6DE, 12:30 p.m.)Last year, the DC Super Hero Girls team debuted the first of a planned series of shorts. Now, with the full series off the ground and airing on Cartoon Network, the cast and crew return triumphant with a new episode to show an appreciative crowd of fans. Last year’s panel was also a lot of fun, so we expect this to be no different. The Walking Dead (Hall H, 1 p.m.)Gimple, Hurd, Alpert, Nicotero, and Kirkman remain on the Hall H stage for the second hour of Walking Dead content. They are joined by Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang and cast members Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Avi Nash, Cooper Andrews, Ryan Hurst, Nadia Hilker, Eleanor Matsuura, and Cailey Fleming. Expect more spoiler-evasion, but a pretty entertaining sort as this cast knows how to talk about their characters without giving anything away. McBride, in particular, is a master at this. The hour will also offer a first look at the Season 10 trailer. The Boys (Ballroom 20, 3:30 p.m.)Stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Jessie T. Usher, Elisabeth Shue, and executive producers Eric Kripke and Seth Rogen come together to discuss the upcoming Amazon Prime series based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. It takes place in a world where superheroes are as fallible as any pro athlete, movie star, or influencer. But when they get out of line, The Boys appear to teach them the folly of their ways.Pennyworth Special Video Presentation and Q A (Room 6BCF, 4:30 p.m.)A series based around Batman’s butler may seem superfluous, but we think those going to this panel will be pleasantly surprised by this new take on Alfred Pennyworth. Stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Paloma Faith, and executive producers Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon will be on hand to present footage from the series and answers questions about the craziest Batman prequel yet.Announcing The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Animated Series (Room 6BCF, 7 p.m.)The underground comix classic is finally coming to TV! Showrunners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen, producers Blake Anderson and Adam Devine, and writers Jeremy Lehrer and Daniel Lehrer will discuss their approach to Gilbert Shelton’s trio of counterculture stoners.Preacher (Hall H, 7 p.m.)Preacher is reaching its endgame. Executive producer Seth Rogen and members of the cast will take to the Hall H stage to celebrate the program’s fourth and final season. We expect they will also have some footage from the Season 4 premiere if not the entire episode itself. They will also reminisce about the high-jinks that Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) got up to while searching for the Almighty.SaturdayBatwoman Pilot Screening And Q A (Ballroom 20, 10:30 a.m.)If you missed the preview night premiere of Batwoman, you will have a second chance to catch the first episode during the first Ballroom 20 presentation on Friday, July 20th. Ruby Rose stars as the out and proud Kate Kane, cousin of a long-absent Bruce Wayne who learns the truth about his nighttime activities and takes the mantle of the Bat for herself. The cast and producers will also be on stage answering questions from soon-to-be fans of the show.Snowpiercer On TBS: Panel and Exclusive First Look (Indigo Ballroom, 3 p.m.)Based on the French comic by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, Snowpiercer takes viewers to a world where the remnants of humanity board a perpetually moving train. But all of the species’ emotional baggage is along for the ride. Stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Lena Hall, Steven Ogg, and executive producer/showrunner Graeme Manson will offer an exclusive peek at the show and answer questions about its long route to the screen.Arrow Special Video Presentation And Q A  (3:30 p.m.)It is hard to believe that this will be the final Arrow panel at Comic-Con. And yet, eight years, two attempts at Olicity, and one Ricardo Diaz later, this is the end. Join the cast and crew as they recall fond times and tease what lies ahead for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as the 10-episode final season brings him inexorably to his final fate. We expect this to be the key panel during The CW’s takeover of Ballroom 20. We even think a trailer for the upcoming “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover will debut toward the end of it.Supergirl, Black Lightning, and The Flash Special Video Presentations and Q A (Ballroom 20, 4:15-6:30 p.m.)While we singled out Arrow because it is their final Comic-Con appearance, Supergirl, Black Lightning, and The Flash will all make their usual Saturday appearances, bringing the customary teases of their new seasons and answer fan questions about the oddest parts of the previous year. Some of those questions will no doubt concern “Crisis,” but we expect each group will have something to share bout the crossover even the Black Lighting team, who stay out of the crossovers. As always, a large number of each cast will be in attendance. If you love these shows and want to see the Marvel Studios presentation, make your choice early and camp out in the appropriate hall.Syfy and IDW Entertainment: Wynonna Earp (Indigo Ballroom, 5 p.m.)It’s been a crazy year for Earpers. At Comic-Con 2018, the cast and crew announced they would be back for a fourth season. But just as production was supposed to start, it smacked up against a long delay and obscure studio politics. But the show is coming back, and stars Melanie Scrofano, Katherine Barrell, Chantel Riley, Greg Lawson, and Michael Eklund – along with executive producer Emily Andras and Wynonna creator Beau Smith – return to Comic-Con once more to tease the definitely soon-to-be-in-production fourth season. Of course, if you’ve ever been to a Wynonna Earp panel, you know they tend feature a lot of fans expressing their love for the show. It will get loud.DC Universe Series Sneak Previews And Q A (Indigo Ballroom, 7 p.m.)DC Universe is gearing up for its second year and it s bringing previews of the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series, the second season of Titans, and more to its two-hour Comic-Con presentation. Talent and producers of the various series will appear and there will probably be a few surprises. We’re hoping we’ll get confirmation about Doom Patrol’s second season and even a last-second reprieve for Swamp Thing, which was cancelled before its second episode debuted, but continued to air the entirety of the first season and turned out to be our favorite comic book show of the early summer.Sunday(Photo by Marc Hom/The CW)Riverdale Special Video Presentation and Q AThe cast and crew of Riverdale close out Comic-Con’s Comics on TV presence with their yearly Hall H appearance. Expect fans to swoon over stars KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse. Also expect executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to offer a bit of info which seems important, but ends up quite tangential to the Season 4 mystery. Will Jughead (Sprouse) be dead by spring break? Will Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) exact his revenge on Veronica (Camilla Mendes)? The questions and more will be discussed even if they are not answered.Like this? Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, and Michael B. Jordan. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS PRATT SAYS GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3 STILL IN THE WORKS (Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an excellent example of why news about film development can be so interesting to follow. Until last summer, the 3 million global take for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 seemed to make the third installment a shoo-in for Marvel, with many speculating it would take a scheduled May 1, 2020 release date. That, however, went all topsy-turvy in July when Disney fired director James Gunn over controversial Twitter jokes from before he was first hired for Guardians of the Galaxy. Since then, Gunn has switched teams, landing the job for Warner Bros./DC Comics reboot of Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. The Guardians cast were supportive of Gunn, with Dave Bautista (Drax) the most vocal about at least keeping Gunn s screenplay. This week, Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) spoke up on the subject, confirming that Marvel and Disney are still moving forward with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 using Gunn s screenplay. Marvel now just has to find a new director, but one option, fan favorite Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), has already said he won t take the job, saying, it feels kind of awkward. Other projects Marvel is developing for 2020 and beyond include Black Panther 2, Black Widow, Doctor Strange 2, The Eternals, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.Fresh Developments1. ANYA TAYLOR-JOY JOINS EDGAR WRIGHT S HORROR FILM LAST NIGHT IN SOHO(Photo by Linda Kallerus/Netflix)Although one of his most famous movies (Shaun of the Dead, Certified Fresh at 92%) was a zombie movie, it was also a comedy, so writer/director Edgar Wright has never technically made a true horror film. Although it s sometimes being labeled as a thriller (or horror-thriller), that may be changing with Wright s next film, which we learned this week is called Last Night in Soho. We don t yet know what the London-set film, written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (TV s Penny Dreadful), is actually about, but we now know who will play the female lead (or one of the leads). That job is going to British-Argentine actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who first came to fame in The Witch and subsequently worked twice with M. Night Shymalan in the recent thrillers Split and Glass. Taylor-Joy also has the X-Men spinoff The New Mutants, in which she stars as popular character Magik, coming soon (8/2/2019).2. TOM HANKS MAY REUNITE WITH CAPTAIN PHILLIPS DIRECTOR TO TELL NEWS OF THE WORLD (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Walt Disney Studios)The films of director Paul Greengrass frequently earn Certified Fresh Tomatometer scores, but you have to go to #4 on his box office results to find a movie without the word Bourne in the title. That movie, which earned 8 million globally from a budget of million, was 2013 s Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks. For his next film, Greengrass is developing an adaptation of the award-winning 2016 novel News of the World, and he is now talking to Tom Hanks about reuniting for the film as their second project together. Paulette Jiles novel tells the story of a former Civil War officer in 1870 who travels across Texas reading newspaper stories to illiterate children, and who is then asked to escort a captured Native American child to her relatives. Hanks recently wrapped his role as Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, is preparing for the science fiction movie BIOS, and also has Toy Story 4 (6/21/2019) and Greyhound (5/8/2020) coming soon.3. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 and 8 LAND OFFICIAL RELEASE DATES(Photo by David James/Paramount Pictures)A few weeks ago, we reported that Paramount Pictures, director Christopher McQuarrie, and star Tom Cruise were moving forward with plans to produce Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back to back for release in 2021 and 2022. We now have a better idea of what Paramount is aiming for (and confirmation that they re serious about this), as the two sequels are scheduled for July 23, 2021 and August 5, 2022, respectively. Studios do typically schedule their biggest films far in advance, but right now, Mission: Impossible 7 is relatively unchallenged in 2021, with Indiana Jones 5 scheduled for two weeks earlier and The Suicide Squad scheduled two weeks later. The closest competition for Mission: Impossible 8 right now is an untitled Marvel Studios project on July 29, 2022. There are no details yet as to where the Mission: Impossible franchise might go after 2022, but Tom Cruise will turn 60 that year, so Mission: Impossible 8 might be his last opportunity to jump out of airplaines and hang from the sides of skyscrapers.4. IDRIS ELBA SIGNS FOR UNDERWATER ADVENTURE DEEPER (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Last week, we got our first good glimpse of the spinoff Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (8/2/2019), showing off Idris Elba as the superpowered bad guy Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will be taking on. We may never get to see Elba take over as James Bond, but new roles for him continue to roll in. Elba is now in talks with MGM to star in the supernatural/science fiction underwater thriller Deeper, to be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Adrift, Everest, 2 Guns), whose regular delivery of Fresh movies is balanced here by a screenplay by Max Landis, whose Tomatometer looks quite different by comparison. In Deeper, Elba will play a disgraced astronaut who is on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench but soon finds himself confronted by a sinister and dangerous force. Gal Gadot and Bradley Cooper (presumably in Elba s role) were previously attached to star in Deeper, but it s not yet known if Gadot is still on board or if another actress will be cast in her role.5. MICHAEL B. JORDAN S TOM CLANCY MOVIE WITHOUT REMORSE SCHEDULED FOR 2020(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Tom Clancy s Jack Ryan is a TV series on Amazon, it looks like Paramount s long obsession with trying to reboot the character as a movie franchise is finally over (for now). Instead, the studio is turning toward another Tom Clancy character, John Clark, starting with an adaptation of Clancy s novel Without Remorse. Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan will star in Without Remorse as John Clark, taking over previous portrayals by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber. Paramount has also scheduled Without Remorse for release on September 18, 2020 (up against the animated sequel The Croods 2). Michael B. Jordan s production company is also now developing an adaptation of the African fantasy novel Black Leopard Red Wolf.  In related news, the video game adaptation Monster Hunter (starring Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa) is also now scheduled for September, 2020 (September 4, specifically).6. KINGSMAN PREQUEL ATTRACTS KICK-ASS AND WATCHMEN STARS(Photo by Daniel Smith/Lionsgate, Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Instead of proceeding with a proper third Kingsman installment starring Taron Egerton, et al, director Matthew Vaughn has instead begun production on a Kingsman prequel, which may or may not be called Kingsman: The Great Game. British rising star Harris Dickinson will star in the spy movie as  a cocky yet charming young [pilot] who’s eager to serve his country and fight in World War I. We ve known for a while that Dickinson will be supported by an impressive ensemble that includes Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War), Rhys Ifans, Ralph Fiennes, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones). This week, the ensemble cast grew even larger with the additions of Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Godzilla, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Nocturnal Animals), Gemma Arterton, Tom Hollander, and Matthew Goode (Ozymandias in Watchmen). This is a reunion project for Taylor-Johnson and Vaughn, as the former starred in the latter s Kick-Ass (also adapted from a comic book by Kingsman creator Mark Millar). 20th Century Fox has already scheduled the Kingsman prequel for release later this year, on November 8, 2019 (against Sonic the Hedgehog and Stephen King s Shining sequel Doctor Sleep).Rotten Ideas3. LONG-IN-DEVELOPMENT ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK REMAKE STILL A POSSIBILITYRemakes are still very much a prolific phenomenon, particularly evident this week, when we saw new trailers for both Pet Sematary (4/5/2019) and Child s Play (6/21/2019). The thing is, the argument is out there that some movies, especially very good ones, shouldn t be remade at all. One of director John Carpenter s best films was a remake, and a few of his own movies have been remade, and remade, and remade. Currently, Dwayne Johnson is even developing a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, and there s been talk of a They Live remake as well. One of the John Carpenter remake projects that s been around the longest (about 10 years or so) is a new take on 1981 s Escape from New York (Certified Fresh at 86%), with Gerard Butler at one point nearly taking over Kurt Russell s role as Snake Plissken. The latest writer/director to come on board is Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Certified Fresh at 87%), just a week after Whannell also started work on a remake of The Invisible Man.2. FOX PUTTING X-MEN MOVIES ON HOLD UNTIL MARVEL TAKES OVER (Photo by Murray Close/20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Super obviously, not all news stories are clear cut Fresh or Rotten. Let s look, for example, at Fox s recent Marvel movies. While, yes, both X-Men: Apocalypse and Fantastic Four failed to resonate with critics, Fox also gave us some pretty great films like Deadpool and Logan. Two months ago, we learned that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will be overseeing Fox s Marvel Comics movies as the studio merges with Disney, which is great news for X-Men and Fantastic Four fans who want to see those heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The bad news we learned this week is that we might have to wait a while, as Fox has put a hold on making any more Marvel films after X-Men: Dark Phoenix (6/7/2019) and The New Mutants (8/2/2019). That means if you were eagerly awaiting movies like Gambit, X-Force, X-23, or Deadpool 3, you may not want to hold your breath. In related news, however, this week we also heard that when Deadpool does come back under Disney, he will still be R-rated, and the studio isn t necessarily saying no to other future R-rated Marvel Comics movies either.1. WORLD WAR Z SEQUEL IS FINALLY SCRAPPED (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Paramount Pictures)Speaking of movies that are being delayed, if you were a big fan of Brad Pitt and director David Fincher s zombie movie World War Z, we ve got some bad news. After years of almost-starts and delays (sometimes while Fincher worked on other projects), Paramount Pictures has finally, apparently definitively, pulled the plug on a World War Z sequel. Pre-production was reportedly already well underway for a six-month shoot in Atlanta and other nations around the world, but that also meant the budget exploded to over 0 million, and that was the breaking point for Paramount. Technically, it sounds like World War Z could come back in the future, but if it does, it would be with a much lower budget, without David Fincher directing, and possibly without Brad Pitt as well. Brad Pitt will next be seen in the science fiction film Ad Astra (5/24/2019) and Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7/26/2019).

Sony unleashed the first teaser for this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home earlier today and it (seemingly) offers the first real glimpse of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase IV. It also offers a good look at the film itself, which revolves around Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and his classmates taking a European summer trip to cites like Venice and London. And while Peter plans to leave Spider-Man at home for the trip, a surprising guest star has other ideas. Considering the secrecy revolving around the film prior to the Avengers: Endgame teaser, that is quite a bit of information to be confirmed in a two-and-a-half minute preview. Thankfully, the tease also offered a few more bits of information.1. Aunt May Is Cool With Spider-Man(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Effectively resolving the joking cliffhanger at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the teaser opens with Aunt May (Marissa Tomei) running a benefit for a homeless shelter. The guest of honor is Spider-Man and the two trade a congratulatory high-five and hug after the event. Clearly, May is okay with Peter s life as Spider-Man.On film, the notion that Aunt May explicitly knows Peter’s secret is new ground. The previous cycles play with the idea she suspects, but seeing her actively utilize Spider-Man’s celebrity is a pleasantly radical concept. Of course, May’s understanding of Spider-Man’s relationship to Peter has varied in other media. In the recent Marvel’s Spider-Man video game, May tells Peter she always knew; suggesting this shift in the character will become a lot more permanent across various Spider-Man outlets. Which only makes sense. It s hard to keep a secret from someone who does your laundry.2. Oh, Hi, Nick Fury!(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)While confirmed last summer, Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) appearance in the teaser still comes off as a surprise. Here, he serves as M to Spidey’s Bond – particularly in that shot with the two of them on the motorboat – a relationship first outlined in the 2012 Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. Taking Peter under his wing, Fury mentored him for a significant portion of the series. In Homecoming, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) took over the mentor role as Fury was still playing dead after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (nevermind that he showed up in Avengers: Age of Ultron with a fully functioning helicarrier). But as S.H.I.E.L.D. is still something of a rogue agency, it is unclear if Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) have restored it following Endgame or set out on their own. Remember when she got a job at Stark Industries? That never really seemed to take. Also, considering both turned to dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we’re going to assume a pretty positive Endgame outcome. Unless, of course, Far From Home is actually set before Infinity War, but Marvel Studios has been open about the film’s post-Endgame spot in the timeline.3. Mysterio(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)After a long time on the bench, Mysterio is finally making his feature film debut in the form of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. And, it seems, the character will be going back to his roots by creating a false
The original premise for the series saw Gordon facing the corrupt Gotham City Police Department while attempting to solve the Wayne murders. But things changed quickly as Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne became more tied to the investigation, and Gotham explored a still-grieving Bruce in the immediate wake of the tragedy. The attempt to process his grief led to some of the obsessive qualities fans recognize in Batman, and it made him uniquely suited to investigate his father’s company in way Gordon could not. Bruce s quest for answers put him on a surprising journey, which meant Mazouz spent more time in Bruce Wayne’s developing psyche than any other actor who has played Batman.“I think it s just a more human process,” he said of Bruce’s journey to masked vigilantism in the fourth season, and the persona his character will take on by the series’ end.(Photo by Justin Stephens/Fox)While Gotham goes on wild tangents to introduce members of Batman’s varied and colorful rogues’ gallery, those stories helped to underscore the original tragedy of Bruce Wayne, Mazouz said.“It s a story that Gotham tells over and over again; people losing something and having some kind of tragic moment to them. We saw it with Penguin, we saw it with Riddler, where things happen to them that aren t justified. The question is: What does a person do with those things after it happens? Bruce is able to turn that vulnerability into strength. He s able to say, ‘I suffered this. I don t want anybody else to do the same,’” the actor said.Villains like Penguin and Riddler, meanwhile, take those losses and decide “[they] want other people to know what that feels like. [They] want other people to suffer too.” That dichotomy reverberates from their Gotham portrayals into the comic-book reality of Batman. Before Bruce can finally adopt his famous identity, he must navigate a Gotham City undone by Jeremiah’s (Cameron Monaghan) attack on the bridges connecting the city to the mainland. Taking its cues from the 1999 No Man’s Land comic book storyline, the series picks up a couple of months after the bombings with “the entire city in complete anarchical disarray,” Mazouz said. Gangs have turned sections of the city into their own little fiefdoms. And while the GCPD try to help as many people as they can without federal support, the situation on the ground is grim.
a novels). Something changed, however, when Taika Waititi (Thor: Raganrok, 93% Certified Fresh) signed on with Warner Bros. and producer Leonardo DiCaprio for Akira instead. The bad news, however, is that Waititi s fans are still going to have to wait almost two years for Akira, because the film is now scheduled for release on May 21, 2021. Waititi s film will reportedly be adapted directly from Katsuhiro Otomo s Akira manga volumes, and will not be a shot-by-shot remake of the anime. In related news, both Waititi and Netflix dropped out this week of the Bubbles biopic about the life of Michael Jackson s pet chimpanzee.4. The First Stars Movie Based On a Video Game is In Development(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Ever since we first heard that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, there has been speculation that their films would be set in the Old Republic setting, some 3,600 years before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This week brought an unexpected wrinkle to that theory with the news that a movie based on the popular video game franchise Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is now in active development (separate from Benioff/Weiss). Instead, the KOTOR movie is being adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, whose produced filmography includes Alita: Battle Angel, Martin Scorsese s Shutter Island, and the Netflix science-fiction series Altered Carbon. As with the two other Star Wars projects that Benioff/Weiss and Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) are working on separately, the Knights of the Old Republic movie is described as being the first of a potential trilogy. Kalogridis also now has the distinction of being the first female screenwriter to work on a Star Wars movie since Leigh Brackett cowrote The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. In related news, we learned more this week about Keri Russell s character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as more about the Knights of Ren.5. Chip N Dale Live-Action Film, Courtesy of the Lonely Island(Photo by @ Buena Vista Television)With Disney now done with Dumbo and Aladdin, The Lion King coming this summer, and Mulan and Cruella coming in 2020, it’s starting to look like they’ll run out of classic animated movies to adapt as live-action films by the middle of the coming decade. Disney, however, might be way ahead of us, as this week brought news that suggests their next steps could involve adapting some of their popular animated TV series as well. Walt Disney Pictures has begun development of a live-action/CGI hybrid adaptation of the studio s popular Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers TV series. The original series ran for a relatively brief amount of time on The Disney Channel (1989 to 1990), but it then entered syndication, where it arguably left a bigger impact and found a larger audience. Akiva Schaffer, of the musical comedy team Lonely Island (along with Andy Samberg), will direct the Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, which will reportedly have a meta angle that s not an origin story. It s not yet known if Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers will debut on the Disney+ streaming service or whether it will receive a full theatrical release.6. Michael Peña Might Get to Recap What Happens in The Tom Jerry MovieJoel MearesAfter he provided some of the funniest scenes in the two Ant-Man movies, many fans were disappointed to find that Michael Peña’s Luis wasn t one of the supporting characters who returned for Avengers: Endgame (maybe he was hanging out with Darcy and Goose). That was especially disappointing given that we still haven t heard of active development for a third Ant-Man movie yet either. Whatever s causing Marvel Studios to drag its feet on that might be to Warner Bros. s advantage, because that studio has cast Michael Peña as one of the human leads in their upcoming Tom Jerry movie (April 16, 2021). Chloë Grace Moretz will be the lead character, as a new employee at an elegant hotel where Peña s character is the deputy general manager, and an alley cat named Tom is enlisted to take care of a pesky mouse named Jerry. Tom and Jerry will be mute, as they were in most of their classic cartoon short films.7. Slow Your Roll, Sonic the Hedgehog: Redesign Needs a Few More MonthsJoel MearesIn a rare example of people complaining about a movie online actually having an immediate impact, earlier this month, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a CGI redesign for his upcoming movie following negative reactions to the first trailer. People quickly speculated that such a rework would probably require more time, and that proved to be a correct guess as this week Paramount Pictures pushed the release back from November 8, 2019 to Valentine s Day, 2020 (up against the third Kingsman movie). Jim Carrey is expected to look pretty much exactly the same as Doctor Robotnik.Rotten Ideas2. This Week in Remakes Pt. 1: Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson May Be Grumpy Old Men(Photo by @ Summit Entertainment, @ DreamWorks)Although Samuel L. Jackson did have small roles in both Coming to America and the comedy concert film Eddie Murphy: Raw, he s never costarred with Eddie Murphy in the last 25 years or so, the era in which Samuel L. Jackson is a mega star. If this week s news goes anywhere, that may change in the next few years, as both actors are now being named as the possible leads in the same film. That movie would be a remake of 1993 s Grumpy Old Men (63% Fresh), starring Jack Lemmon (then 68) and Walter Matthau (then 73). Eddie Murphy (currently 58) is already attached to star in this remake, and Samuel L. Jackson (currently 70) is reportedly circling the project. Unfortunately, the Grumpy Old Men remake currently looks like a Rotten Idea due to the multitude of Rotten Tomatometer scores for the remake s director, Tim Story. But it could be time for a turnaround.1. This Week in Remakes Pt. 2: Mel Gibson s The Wild Bunch(Photo by Patrick Redmond / © Vertical Entertainment )There s a common notion that the best candidates for remakes are films that were flawed in the first place. The idea is that revisiting movies that could genuinely be improved makes more sense than revisiting something that is generally considered to have been done right the first time. For example, 1939 s The Wizard of Oz is itself a remake (and not even the first one), following silent films that lacked the music that made it a classic. So, when a movie like 1969 s The Wild Bunch has a 94% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score and a spot on various Best Movies of All Time lists, you d think no one would ever consider remaking it. Those people would not be Mel Gibson. Warner Bros. is preparing exactly such a remake to be directed by Gibson, and negotiations have begun with three major stars. The potential stars for The Wild Bunch remake include Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), and fresh off HBO s Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage.Like this? Book Club (which scored 54% and opened to .5 million) look pretty dashed. It is the second week in a row that STX failed to get a million start (including last week’s UglyDolls.)The studio picked up Poms through auction at the American Film Market last November for between million and million, and it opened this weekend to .1 million.Lionsgate’s Long Shot, meanwhile, dropped 37% in its second weekend. While word of mouth has caught up to the film a little, the drop was still to big to beat The Intruder in its second week.Fox Searchlight has opened a film in more than 1,000 theaters just 28 times in its 183-film history. The 29th time came this weekend with Tolkien. While there was enough curiosity to earn it .1 million in 1,496 theaters this weekend, the biopic’s per-screen-average of ,440 currently makes it the second-worst per-theater average among those 29 films. If the estimates hold, that is. If the number actually drops, it could fall behind the ,383 PTA that Miss March had in 2009 and become the worst. Between Tolkien (49%) and The Aftermath (27%), Fox Searchlight has released its two lowest-scored films since 2017’s back-to-back releases of Table 19 (26%) and Wilson (48%).The Top Ten And Beyond: New Releases Nothing To Pikachu About(Photo by Warner Bros.)Back in March, expectations for Pokemon Detective Pikachu were set for a million weekend and, in some circles, a 0 million domestic haul. The high predictions came back down to Earth a bit recently as WB lowballed a million start for its live-action Pokemon film. Audiences split the difference this weekend and handed over million, which is a little more than what The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian opened to. A Dog’s Journey may take a small nibble out of its staying power next week and Aladdin an even larger bite the week after. Critics have marginally put it in Fresh territory with a 63% score and a first estimate of 0-170 million for Pikachu means WB will be counting on international fans to cover its 0 million budget. The film has grossed an additional 2.4 million overseas so far. Also opening this weekend was the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. It opened to a bit less (.5 million) than Wilson’s February comedy, Isn’t It Romantic?, which started with .2 million even with a two-day head start. At 16%, The Hustle is one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, lower than the score for Hathaway’s other delayed 2019 release, Serenity (19%).This Time Last Year: Infinity War Was Also On Its Third Straight Week At The Top(Photo by Marvel Studios)A year ago, Avengers: Infinity War led the way for a third straight week with the fourth-best third weekend in history ( million.) Its two new challengers that weekend, Life of the Party with Melissa McCarthy and home invasion thriller Breaking In, duked it out for second and third with .88 and .63 million, respectively. The documentary RBG also made its way into tenth place in its second weekend with .18 million in 179 theaters. The top ten films grossed a total of 6.69 million and averaged 63.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 2.77 million and averaged 53.4%.On the Vine: John Wick Battles A Dog In Attempt To Take Down The Avengers(Photo by Summit Entertainment)Keanu Reeves returns to potentially close out a trilogy in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum. After the disappointing returns of Long Shot, Lionsgate could use a non-Tyler Perry victory. Will this be the one to finally make it to 0 million? Will its fans be enough to overthrow the Avengers in week four? Speaking of sequels and animals Mr. Wick is fond of, Universal follows up moderate hit A Dog’s Purpose with A Dog’s Journey. Then the director of Before I Fall, Ry Russo-Young, tackles another young adult novel with The Sun Is Also A Star. The Full Top 10: May 10-12Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .05 million (3.49 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – million ( million total)The Hustle (2019) 14% – .53 million (.53 million total)The Intruder (2019) 33% – .60 million (.97 million total)Long Shot (2019) 81% – .12 million (.73 million total)Poms (2019) 36% – .11 million (.11 million total)UglyDolls (2019) 28% – .92 million (.27 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .46 million (.10 million total)Tolkien (2019) 51% – .15 million (.15 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .81 million (3.77 million total)
