This Week s Ketchup brings you another ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Creed 3, Indiana Jones 5, Jurassic World: Dominion, and Little Shop of Horrors. This WEEK S TOP STORYLOGAN DIRECTOR TO REPLACE SPIELBERG ON INDIANA JONES 5(Photo by Paramount/courtesy Everett Collection)When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, the obvious focus was on the Star Wars franchise, but Indiana Jones was another long-running property that Disney acquired at the same time. By that point, Paramount had already been developing an Indiana Jones 5 for a few years (basically since the 2008 release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), which continued until the film finally received a release date of July 19, 2019. That obviously didn t happen, with the release date now landing next summer on July 9, 2021 (four days before Harrison Ford turns 79). With Steven Spielberg still working on his West Side Story remake (12/18/2020), there had been recent speculation about Indiana Jones 5, which was answered this week as Steven Spielberg has dropped out of directing it. Instead, James Mangold is now in talks to direct Indiana Jones 5, with Ford still attached as the film s star. It s unclear when Indiana Jones 5 will start filming, or if the release date will change, but Ford did just say two weeks ago that he expected to start filming in April. Other Top Headlines1. THE RUN TIME OF NO TIME TO DIE MAY REVEALED(Photo by UA/Everett Collection)For most of its first few decades, the movies in the James Bond franchise had a fairly consistent running time range in the range of two hours or so, but they started getting longer when Daniel Craig took on the role (all but Quantum of Solace were between 143 and 148 minutes). So, it may have come as surprising news this week when Regal Cinemas revealed that No Time to Die (4/10/2020) will have a running time of 163 minutes, or just 17 minutes shy of three hours. Put another way, that means that No Time to Die will be 15 minutes longer than Spectre, which had been the longest film at 148 minutes. 2. CREED III GETS IT SCREENWRITER(Photo by MGM)The 2018 Rocky franchise sequel Creed II ended up earning over 4 million worldwide, which was an increase over the 3 million earned by the first Creed. So, it s unsurprising that MGM is now developing a third Creed movie for their star Michael B. Jordan. MGM has hired screenwriter Zach Baylin to start work on a third Creed. As for what Creed III will be about, there is already speculation online that Sylvester Stallone s Rocky Balboa may not be coming back. Stallone is currently staying very busy, including both his superhero movie Samaritan (12/11/2020) and the futuristic action movie Little America . The show s fans had contributed to a GoFundMe effort to get the message out and sent a plane trailing a #SaveTheExpanse banner over Amazon Studios in Santa Monica. They created homemade trailers to promote the series and their mission to rescue it from cancellation. The passion fans have shown has floored the cast and creators. There s an enthusiasm and excitement that we d haven t really experienced before being a part of the show, said Wes Chatham, who plays Rocinante mechanic and muscle Amos Burton in the series. Also, there s a kind of relationship and a connection to the fans that s unlike anything I ve ever experienced before because they were so supportive and instrumental. We went through this thing together. It kind of like ties you. Like, I see people in Whole Foods, and we re just like hugging it out. He s like, Man, I love this show. I was there from the beginning, you know? So, we kind of have this kind of relationship and this connection. It s just an incredible thing to be a part of. (Photo by James Dimmock/Amazon Prime)Chatham also relishes the storytelling opportunity that comes with their new streaming home. Being on broadcast television in general just has its challenges, because if you re trying to tell a story, and the story wants to go somewhere that s honest and truthful, and there s a lot of edge to it, you ve got to round those edges out in broadcast television, Chatham told reporters. You got to work until commercials, you got to have the act breaks, five act breaks that go to the commercial, and have the time a specific way. You re not following the story; you re following guidelines for an advertisement. Being on Amazon, you can follow the story wherever it takes you; it can be beautiful, it can be ugly, it can be harsh, it can be violent, but you have to go through all those to be able to express the story and have it live to its highest potential, he continued. From a creative perspective, the story is the most important thing — which in broadcast TV, there s a lot of other important things — and I love that. I love working like that. I don t know if I could go back to any other version of working. (Photo by Amazon Prime)Speaking of storytelling, season 4 reflects the events of Expanse book Cibola Burn, propelling our heroes through the Ring System to the human-habitable planet of Ilus, disputed territory that a ship of Belter war refugees has settled. The settlers want their own permanent home, while Earth s government wants measured settlement of newfound Earth-like planets, and private industry wants, for one, to get in on the mining opportunities on planets like Ilus, which they call New Terra. Avasarala sends Jim Holden (Steven Strait) and crew in on a diplomacy mission, to act as her eyes and ears between the settlers and representatives of Royal Charter Energy, which had a U.N. charter for scientific exploration of the planet. My writing partner, Daniel, has a biology degree, Franck said about the origin of Ilus, and we would talk a lot about all the things that other sci-fi gets wrong with alien biology. So we started playing around with the idea of a planet with alien biology on it and the ways that that would present. That s mostly where it came from. But that alien biology is trying to kill these characters. That idea of when you go to a new place, anything there that isn t trying to kill you doesn t know you exist, Franck said. The minute something realizes you exist, it s going to try to kill you, because that s how nature works. And dropping people into that alien biology you re a big bag of moisture with high-energy atoms in it — something s going to try to eat those, because that s delicious. The season also reaches beyond the story in Cibola Burn, which allows the writers to continue utilizing characters that didn t appear in the novel.(Photo by James Dimmock/Amazon Prime)Asked what challenges the storyline changes presented, Franck said: This is going to sound cheesy, but it wasn t really challenges; it was opportunities. We had a novella called Gods of Risk that Bobbie Draper appears in, and we used that as the launching point for a Bobbie story this season, which was a lot of fun to write. Bobbie is one of my favorite characters to write for. Then the whole election of Chrisjen Avasarala was a thing that we had always talked about for the books but had never done, because obviously she is a politician who has never been elected. What is that like when somebody who has never been elected has to run to office for the first time? Franck continued. That was a lot of fun just watching her put up with the indignities of having to answer to anyone, because, I don t know if you guys watch the show, but Chrisjen Avasarala is not a person who likes answering to people. She s not a person who tolerates being questioned, and having her run for election where all people do is question every decision she makes and put a lot of demands on her time, that was a lot of fun. So, yeah, it wasn t challenging, it was awesome.
Casting notice reveals Batwoman producers have ditched the Kate Kane role for a more goofy alter ego, Cobra Kai must find a new streaming home, Patrick Dempsey returns to U.S. TV in Italian crime series, Gal Gadot TV series moves to Apple TV+, Joe Exotic foe Carole Baskin is awarded his zoo, and more recent top TV news.TOP STORYRuby Rose’s Replacement Will Play a New Alter Ego as Batwoman(Photo by Frank Ockenfels 3/The CW )Not only was the Batwoman Season 1 finale the last episode of the series for star Ruby Rose, but it was also the last episode for her character, Kate Kane.As The CW begins the process of casting a new lead actress for the series after Rose quit the DC Universe drama following its May premiere season finale, the network has decided to create a new character who will don the Batwoman suit.Kate Kane was the cousin of Bruce Wayne, the alter ego of Batman. But Decider.com reports that, as per a casting notice, the new character will be named Ryan Wilder. The scoop on Ryan: she’s mid- to late 20s, may be of any ethnicity, and she’s “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.”More details for the new Batwoman star, who will take over the role when the series returns in January 2021: “With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands … Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”The casting notice also encourages, “Performers who identify as LGBTQ are encouraged to submit.” The first season of Batwoman made history as the first live-action series to feature a lesbian superhero as the lead.Cobra Kai Moving from YouTube to a New Home – Netflix? Hulu? – for Season 3Bad news: still no release date for the much-anticipated third season of Cobra Kai. But the good news: that premiere date should be announced as soon as the Karate Kid sequel series lands at its new streaming service home. Deadline reports YouTube had decided it would not order additional seasons of the series after Season 3 because of a pivot to focus on unscripted series. Cobra Kai producer Sony Television then asked YouTube if it could shop Season 3 around to other networks — with the hope that a new service would want to also order additional seasons — and YouTube agreed. According to Deadline, all the major streaming services were interested in the series, which quickly earned a huge fanbase when it premiered in 2018, and now it’s down to Hulu and Netflix as the two most likely to snag the show.No spoilers for those who have yet to watch the series — one of the most bingeworthy dramas of the pandemic, FYI — but Season 2 ended with a major cliffhanger regarding the status of one of the breakout younger characters of the series, which stars original Karate Kid cast members Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. From Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz: “Clarity is out there when it comes to the reasons for the delay in Season 3 s release. I promise you will hear from us the moment there s something official to announce. Hopefully soon. Just know that our priorities are always what s best for the show and its future.”The CW Adds Patrick Dempsey Italian Thriller Series to Its Fall Schedule(Photo by The CW)The CW is getting devilish with its fall lineup, courtesy of Patrick Dempsey. The series will unfold the story of Lamarr beyond her career as an actress, including her work as an inventor (among her creations: an invention that became the basis for spread spectrum technology that’s used today) and founding her own production studio. (Variety)Amazon is developing a series featuring The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo character Lisbeth Salander. The current owner of the Wynnewood property, and another star of Tiger King, Jeff Lowe, told ET.com he has no intentions of leaving Tiger King Park in good condition for Baskin’s takeover. But Baskin may have bigger things to worry about, as a sheriff in Florida is alleging that the will of Baskin’s missing husband, Don Lewis, who was declared dead in 2002, was forged. The will left Lewis’ estate to Baskin and nothing to his family, another topic that was covered in Tiger King.亚博全网APPIt’s been 15 years since we saw Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union) taking names and stealing scenes from her brother Marcus (Martin Lawrence) and then-boyfriend Mike (Will Smith) in Bad Boys II. Back then, Syd was working for the federal government and toppling cartels in Miami. Now, Syd moves to Los Angeles (and television) on L.A.’s Finest, a follow-up of sorts that shares her new adventures as an L.A. cop alongside her equally badass partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba). Together, Syd and Nancy — not named for the infamous punk duo, they promise — encounter action-packed crime scenarios at work and in their personal lives. They might not trust each other with all their dirty secrets at first, but no matter what, Syd and Nancy always have each other’s backs.“It felt really modern to tell this story of this friendship and this partnership of two women in a modern time, in a modern world,” Alba said during Rotten Tomatoes visit to the show s Los Angeles-area set in February. “You don t have to call out that we re women all the time. We re just people in the world that you want to hang out with.”L.A.’s Finest premieres May 13. It’s the first original series for cable provider Charter Communications/Spectrum, and thus it’s a guinea pig of sorts for the service. The Spectrum Original series will be available on demand for customers of the cable service only, but Union isn’t worried about people missing her show.“I love a challenge,” she said. The proof is in the pudding.”From Clean-Cut Procedural to Rough-and-Real Drama(Photo by Nicole Wilder/Spectrum Originals)On paper, L.A.’s Finest might sound like a procedural: Two cops fighting crime in Los Angeles. But with Michael Bay’s 90s action flick Bad Boys as its source material — and support from Jerry Bruckheimer Television — L.A.’s Finest feels more like an action-thriller series than a clean-cut cop drama.According to its producers, though, L.A.’s Finest wasn’t always so gritty and real. The shift from procedural crime show to action-packed drama happened when L.A.’s Finest moved from NBC to Spectrum, after the team had already finished shooting the pilot.Producer Anton Cropper (Suits, Black-ish) said, in some ways, the series straddles the differences between network and cable narratives: “We always talk about the difference between network and cable, and we wanted it to have that cable feel. We wanted this to feel cinematic, Cropper said. Especially in today s age, everyone has 80-inch TVs. We wanted this to feel like a 13-episode movie. For the L.A. s Finest team, the cable vibe wasn t just about a visual look that combined TV and cinematic techniques. It also meant focusing on characters’ relationships and emotional lives rather than just the nitty gritty of their jobs as detectives.“It s different for a show like ours to tackle more of the personal relationships and less of a procedural,” Alba said. “You really get to go on that journey with us.”Alba and Union agreed that there were some real, concrete differences when the series was aiming for network distribution. Their wardrobes were more limited, their characters felt more archetypical, and Syd’s sexuality was, well, straight.“In the NBC version,” Union said, “there is no woman in my bed But in the Spectrum/Charter version, she s back!”Originally, Nancy was more “uptight” with a “perfect life,” and Syd was “the rebellious one,” Alba revealed.“It was always sort of keeping us inside of these boundaries and these roles, she said. In real life people, are a lot more fluid… and so that s how we want to see women on this show.”The Series Is Action Packed(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Erica Parise)Right off the bat, L.A.’s Finest throws its audience into the heart of Los Angeles — a.k.a. right into traffic. In the first episode, Syd and Nancy are seen engaging in the most typical Los Angeles behavior possible: arguing over traffic, the GPS, and local routes of navigation. Sure, the series features on-location scenes everywhere from Santa Monica to Koreatown, but its representation of life in Los Angeles isn’t necessarily the most realistic one. Specifically, Syd’s apartment and Nancy’s house are way outside the typical budgets for L.A. law enforcement. But Union says the show is self-aware about the luxury these ladies live in. In fact, Union said that’s part of the point.“[Syd has] clearly played loose and fast with the rules, she said. She hasn’t been an L.A. detective for that long, so what exactly was she doing for the D.E.A.?”In other words, what has Syd done to afford this room with a view? What has she done to hide, or otherwise evade, potential demons from her past?L.A.’s Finest has Alba and Union driving all over the city chasing perps and evading figures from their respective pasts. While the two do some of their own hand-to-hand combat, they do have stunt doubles that face most of the action for them. But the driving? It s often really Alba behind the wheel, Union says.“I’m like, where’s the stunt driver?” she laughed. “And they’re like, Jessica has opted to do it! ”In Alba s defense, it s fun, though, the actress said.Yeah — “for her,” Union joked. “It’s one big anxiety attack for me.”Opening Up the Bad Boys Universe(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals / Photographer: Nicole Wilder)Even though L.A. s Finest is focused on Syd s life now, her partnership with Alba s Nancy, and how these women s past lead them to such turbulent and complex presents, Union is also open to including other Bad Boys characters in the mix. The Bad Boys universe exists so we can have these Avengers-type moments where can all sort of be together, that would be amazing, Union said. The door is always open for them. In fact, the new Spectrum series has already expanded the Bad Boys family by introducing Syd s estranged father (played by Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson) into the mix. We had to figure out what would cause an estrangement to the degree where you d never met Ernie s character in the Bad Boys universe — you d never really heard of Marcus having parents, Union said. We had to come up with a mythology that really explained his absence and their relationship. (Photo by Spectrum Originals)From the get-go, it was Union leading the charge on reintroducing Syd s story and incorporating Nancy in the series.“It really did start with Gabrielle, L.A. s Finest co-executive producers and writer Brandon Margolis (pictured above left). Margolis said that he and his writing partner and fellow showrunner, Brandon Sonnier (above right), met with Union to pitch a Syd-centric TV series, and everything grew from there.“It was a real blessing to have these two strong women who can do the action, but equally hit the comedy timing and those comedy beats and moments, which are a real hallmark of the Bad Boys universe,” Sonnier said during our set visit in February.Sonnier expressed a real appreciation of Alba and Union s chemistry, too.“They right off the bat had a trust and a camaraderie, he said. They came in as equals and it immediately showed up on the screen.”(Later in February, Sonnier and Margolis were involved in an on-set accident that resulted in Sonnier s leg being partially amputated, but is still working, according to an interview Charter Content Chief Katherine Pope gave to Cablefax.com this month: He was at our final mix and in editing we treasure him. )(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Erica Parise)The duo s on-screen chemistry is a translation of their real-life naughty sense of humor, as Union explained it.Alba described the show s creative working environment: “During the pilot we did a lot of ad-libbing and we would just riff off each other.”More than inside jokes, though, the two are committed to fostering a behind-the-scenes space that accommodates their lives as mothers, too.“I needed somebody that was gonna be on board with a new way of filming, a new way of doing this Hollywood thing,” Union said. And when Alba decorated her trailer as a nursery to prepare for her new baby, Union knew she’d picked the right partner. To hear their fellow producers and costars tell it, everyone benefits from that parent-safe and accommodating environment. Ryan McPartlin, who plays Nancy’s husband, Ryan, has also brought his kids — 9- and 12-year-old boys — to set.“God forbid, it s probably gonna make them want to become actors,” McPartlin joked.Partners in Crime — On-Screen and Off(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Ron Batzdorff)In addition to starring in the series, Alba and Union are also executive producers. It was Union who recruited Alba to be her partner on- and off-screen. Union knew she wanted a “boss, badass woman” to be her co-star — someone who would be confident in the middle of action scenes and voicing her opinion behind the scenes, too.“There s not too many women that run a billion-dollar company, have established iconic characters, who can kick ass, who has the same work ethic I do, who s not afraid to speak her mind,” Union said. “There s only one Jessica Alba. So that s why I started calling and begging… Sending tequila.”L.A’s Finest premieres Monday, May 13 on Spectrum on Demand.Like this? Marvel Studios released a second full trailer for April’s Avengers: Endgame on Thursday. And now that Captain Marvel is out in theaters, it finally establishes Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) will be part of the roster as they take the fight back to Thanos (Josh Brolin). But as with so much of the Endgame publicity, it plays coy with the actual plot. For instance: we assume the mission takes them to that garden planet Thanos relaxes on at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. It is a solid guess based on shots in previous trailers and the later part of Marvel Comics’ The Infinity Gauntlet, but we don’t really know that it is part of “whatever it takes” to win the day. Some believe the Avengers will go elsewhere and even elsewhen to undo the Mad Titan s brutal Snap.Nonetheless, the trailer offers a few more clues to the film’s overall shape. Here are five of the things we gleaned from it.Tony Pulls Off One More Surprise(Photo by Marvel Studios)Despite both long-form trailers opening with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) recording a final account to Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), Tony can be spotted in the group shot toward the end – which features the team in Avengers-branded uniforms reported to allow them access to the Quantum Realm. Since that slow-motion group walk, featured in some form during every Endgame trailer (more on this later), takes place at the Avengers HQ, this means Tony makes it back to Earth before the final act of the film. We’re going to assume the Benatar (the Guardians of the Galaxy s ship) makes its way to Earth in that scene from the “Big Game Ad” in which Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) look up at something mysterious. At the time, we thought Carol might be assisting the ship in landing, but eagle-eyed fans online noticed a mysterious gap in the composition between Rhodey and Bruce which could be Carol erased from the ad to conceal her presence in the film. With that in mind, we’re guessing either Thor (Chris Hemsworth) found them or Tony really did pull off one more surprise.Of course, there’s always the possibility the message will be delivered to Pepper after the Avengers complete their endgame. But we really don’t want to think about that yet.The Past Matters(Photo by Marvel Studios)The trailer opens with a very pointed reminder that Tony built the first Iron Man suit from scraps in a cave. It moves on to remind the audience of early moments from Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. Rumors suggest time travel will help the Avengers defeat Thanos, so these shots may support that plot thread. Alternatively, the trailer could be setting up a big sacrifice as the three original Avengers with solo movies face down their endgame. It is no secret that Downey, Hemsworth, and Evans plan to walk away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the film makes its worldwide debut, but will their time within the studio s overarching story really end with their characters boldly dying to save the universe? That’s kind of epic, but we want more Thor after Thor: Ragnarok reset his tone.Scott’s Escape From The Quantum Realm May Be Ill-Timed(Photo by Marvel Studios)One thing we still don’t know about the film is just how much time has passed since the final moments of Infinity War and Endgame. According to some reports, it could be years. We’ve always subscribed to the thought that Endgame takes place a year later – more or less in real time with our world. There’s a nice extra-cinematic symmetry to that. But no matter how long the interval, it is clear Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) escape from the Quantum Realm will see him facing down the grim new reality without the Pym clan to explain it. Y know, since they all turned to ash in the Snap. The one featured shot of him in the new trailer sees him reacting to missing posters in the wake of the Snap; which means he will no doubt determine his family s survival before making his way to Avengers HQ. Some believe his ability to access the Quantum Realm will offer the Avengers a time travel portal, but in this scene, it is clear Scott has no ability to muck with time and must endure the pain of the Snap. But considering our next topic, Scott may join the Avengers sooner rather than later.Black Widow’s Going Back To Red(Photo by Marvel Studios)With all all the talk about time travel and the gap between the two films, it’s time to talk about Natasha Romanoff’s hair. That might seem silly, but the new trailer features Nat with a variety of styles, lengths and colors. And if anything marks the progression of time within the film, it is the return of the classic Black Widow look. But tracking that progression is not easy within the context of the second trailer. Going from Black Widow’s last appearance in it – when Thor meets Carol – her hair is short and blond as seen in Infinity War. In her first appearance in the trailer, in which she reconnects with Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) it seems to be longer, but still blond. Then, when Cap invokes the “not us” phrase from the Big Game ad, it’s clear she’s letting the blond grow out. When we see her again, suited up aboard a ship we presume is the Benatar, there are only a few streaks of blond remaining in her braided hair. During the hero walk, her hair is also predominate red, but we also see her with blond hair in the firing range sequence from the earlier trailers. Although, it does appear to be the length from the Clint Barton scene. Clearly, the film covers more time than we anticipated. Perhaps it covers the entire gap year and possibly more. It may also track the changes to the timeline should time travel come into play.Going back to Scott for a second, we noticed Nat’s hair is short in the Scott Lang stinger from the first trailer. If we assume her hair will be longer and red by the time the Avengers are ready for Thanos, Scott’s Quantum Realm exile following the Ant-Man and the Wasp stinger scene may not be that long at all. Perhaps his apparent mastery of the Quantum Realm will be a key part of the plan.Marvel went out of its way to hide Nat’s changing hairstyles until this trailer – we even suspect her key moment with Cap toward the end of the first trailer was altered to maintain her Infinity War hairstyle so giving it away now is rather telling. The Hero Walk Evolved(Photo by Marvel Studios)Also, while double-checking Black Widow’s appearances in the previous trailer and the Big Game ad, we noticed the hero walk featured in the new trailer and the TV ad actually appears in the first trailer as a completely empty Avengers HQ hangar bay. The addition of people across the first trailer, the Big Game Ad, and the second trailer feels as purposeful as revealing Nat’s hair color in the new trailer. The empty shot also occurs once more in this new preview. But in lieu of cutting to the profile shot of the group in the Big Game Ad, we see close-ups of the assembled Avengers in their coordinated uniforms. Cap leads the charge with Tony, Scott, Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Nat closely behind. Clint can also be seen alongside Rhodey; whose War Marchine armor has been painted to match the white-grey-red Avengers color scheme. In the Big Game version, the silhouettes include Cap, Scott, Nat (with the shorter hairstyle), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Clint, Rhodey, and one completely mysterious shadow we’re going to assume is either Carol or Thor. Even though this scene keeps getting altered with each trailer, we’re going to assume this is nearly the full complement of heroes heading out into space to fight Thanos.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Of course, that leaves a few questions. For one, Bruce is notably absent from every version of the hero walk. Where is he? He could always be the mysterious shadow behind Rhodey. It is also possible Bruce’s arc needs to be obscured for reasons we will discover next month. Perhaps the heroes missing from the most recent version of the slo-mo walk are part of a frontal assault with a heavy-hitter team like Thor, Carol, and the Hulk, this is a possibility while the others go back in time to set up the tools necessary to undo the Snap.We also wonder why the team lacks for Wakandan representation. That nation definitely needs to repay Thanos for his “kindness,” and at least one capable Wakandan fighter survived the Snap. There’s still the question of Shuri’s (Letita Wright) survival following the Snap. She’s seen among the missing in a blink-and-you’ll-miss it moment from the first trailer. But considering all the alterations we discovered by just examining Black Widow’s hair, it is possible her very brief inclusion in the first trailer is there to obscure her Endgame situation; whether it be ascending to the throne or replacing Tony as the team’s tech wiz. And even if she did end up turning to dust, we hope the Avengers will extend an invitation to Okoye (Danai Gurira) to join them in the final conflict. Her face is on the new poster, after all.Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere on April 26.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

Although some studios chose to sit out San Diego Comic-Con this year (like Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros.), one that had a big panel Thursday morning was Paramount. Ostensibly focusing on Terminator: Dark Fate (11/1/2019), Paramount also released the first trailer this morning for another big sequel, next summer s Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020).The panel started with a remote introduction from James Cameron, who wasn t actually there, but was calling in from the set of the long-delayed Avatar sequels, joking about how long people have been waiting for those films. Cameron also said about the Avatar sequel technology that I d love to tell you about what you see behind me, but it s classified. It would take five hours to explain and no one understands the technology anyway. The sort of funny irony about him kicking off the Terminator: Dark Fate panel by talking about the Avatar sequels is that they re now Disney movies, following the 20th Century Fox acquisition, so Paramount was basically using some of their Hall H time to promote another studio s big movies. Oops.(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As for Dark Fate, there were two big reveals on top of what we already know from the first trailer and other stories. First, it was confirmed that Terminator: Dark Fate will be rated R, which will be the first time since 2003 s Terminator: Rise of the Machines. Both Terminator: Salvation and Terminator: Genisys had PG-13 ratings, but that didn t seem to make much difference at the box office in any case, so perhaps the thought is that, like the Die Hard franchise, for example, the Terminator movies are really best-suited to feature R-rated violence (and language occasionally too). There was also a surprise casting announcement marking the return of one of the stars of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. With returning stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger both in attendance, we learned that after skipping the last three Terminator movies, Edward Furlong will also be returning as John Connor, whose future importance was originally what got this whole franchise going. Having said that, it s not that the character of John Connor himself has been absent from the franchise. Nick Stahl played the role in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Christian Bale played him in Terminator: Salvation, and Jason Clarke took over the role in Terminator: Genisys. The funny thing is, none of those four actors even really look like each other. Are we sure there aren t four different John Connors from four different timelines?(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As for Top Gun: Maverick, the trailer makes it very clear that this is a Tom Cruise movie. Although the film features an ensemble cast on paper (including actors like Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, and the return of Val Kilmer as Iceman), Cruise s presence dominates the trailer, even if Ed Harris speaks most of the actual dialogue and gets a pretty great line to boot. The other focus, obviously, is on the fighter jets (this is a Top Gun movie after all), which is interesting, considering the film s premise had been described, once upon a time, as focusing on drone pilots. It s certainly possible that the modern Navy s emphasis on drones is still a big part of the story. We ll find out when the long-in-development Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters next summer, on June 26, 2020 (up against Lin-Manuel Miranda s musical Into the Heights).
(Photo by ©Neon)After two weeks of voting, the Rotten Tomatoes community has chosen its winners for each category at the 92nd Academy Awards, set to take place this Sunday. The big winner was Bong Joon-ho s genre-hopping Parasite, which tallied enough votes to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best International Film. Todd Phillips gritty take on Gotham s most famous villain, Joker, nabbed four wins of its own, with Joaquin Phoenix predictably taking Best Actor, Phillips himself taking the Best Adapted Screenplay category with co-writer Scott Silver, and Hildur Guðnadóttir the only woman nominated in her category winning for Best Original Score. Meanwhile, Sam Mendes World War I film failed to win any of the big five awards, but 1917 still tallied three wins in technical categories, including Best Cinematography for Roger Deakins stunning work, though Mendes also came close to taking Best Director and the film was just over 100 votes away from taking Best Production Design away from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.Download our printable 2020 Oscars BallotAll in all, over 400,000 votes were cast, and only a few of the categories were narrowly contested the award for Best Adapted Screenplay was closely split between four of the nominees. This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Star Trek, Swan Lake, and TRON: Ares. This WEEK S TOP STORYJARED LETO TO STAR IN TRON: ARES(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)It s now been ten years since the release of the long-in-development sequel TRON: Legacy (Rotten at 51%), which was perceived by some as a box office disappointment, despite actually earning over 0 million worldwide. That sequel came about 28 years after the first TRON, but it looks like the gap between 2 and 3 will be a lot shorter. That s because Disney is moving ahead with a third TRON movie, which will be directed by Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene). Original TRON star Jeff Bridges returned for TRON: Legacy, along with newcomer Garrett Hedlund, but it appears that the star of this third TRON movie will be Jared Leto (though it s also possible others will return as well). Although plenty of what Disney makes these days is for Disney+, it sounds like this new TRON is indeed planned for a theatrical release (presuming the pandemic ends soon). We also learned this week, via Jared Leto s Twitter, that the title will be TRON: Ares, which is a reference to the Greek god of war maybe this is the name of Jared Leto s character, or maybe it s a God of War or Assassin s Creed-style game that is the new film s in-game setting. In related news, Jared Leto also confirmed on his Instagram this week that he is attached to star in an upcoming movie as famous pop art superstar Andy Warhol, although it s unclear what movie that might be (an Andy Warhol biopic was announced in 2016, but not much has been heard of it since).Other Top Headlines1. ELISABETH MOSS AND BLUMHOUSE REUNITE FOR MRS. MARCH (Photo by Mark Rogers/©Universal Pictures)Most of 2020 is completely borked when it comes to box office numbers because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but one of the year s (relative) successes happened just before theaters shut down. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions released their reimagining of the classic monster movie The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss, on February 28, earning 0 million worldwide (a number impacted by the shutdowns in March) before pivoting to a premium VOD release. Elisabeth Moss and her Love and Squalor Pictures production company are partnering again with Blumhouse on a psychological thriller called Mrs. March, in which Moss will also star. Mrs. March will be an adaptation of an upcoming novel by Virginia Feito about an a polished Upper East Side housewife who unravels when she begins to suspect the detestable protagonist of her husband’s latest bestselling novel is based on her. Moss said in a s
