We re probably never going to get a live-action Rescuers Down Under, so that only leaves Pocahontas, Tarzan, and Hercules, one of which is now also officially in the works. Walt Disney Pictures is now developing a live-action remake of their 1997 mythological animated musical Hercules (Certified Fresh at 84%), and it will have two direct connections to Marvel Studios in the form of producers Joe and Anthony Russo (the directors of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame) and screenwriter Dave Callaham, who is currently working on Marvel s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (5/7/2021). It is reportedly unclear if the remake will have musical songs from the original, or if it will be a non-musical remake like Mulan, and we don t yet know who will direct it (although there have been some rumors). Another question left to be addressed is where this puts Marvel s own version of Hercules, who is one of the earliest members of the Avengers (#11, just before Black Panther and Vision), and one of the longest-running team members as well (his longest stint was in the 1990s). Hercules also has the distinction of being one of the few Marvel Comics characters to receive a popular Internet meme as the COOL STORY, BRO guy without also appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could the Hercules remake end with someone like Nick Fury inviting him to join the New Avengers Initiative?Other Top Headlines1. MAJOR FILM FESTIVALS UNITE FOR WE ARE ONE ON YOUTUBEThe COVID-19 pandemic has obviously had an impact on all sectors of society, but some of them didn t necessarily present obvious alternatives within a stay-at-home strategy. For example, yes, movie studios could reschedule their theatrical releases or release some of them on VOD, but the world s various film festivals are designed to bring people together from across the globe into spaces where they would breathe the same air for two hours in close quarters. So what s going to happen to the dozens of movies that would have premiered at those festivals in 2020? YouTube and Tribeca Enterprises appear to have found a solution, which will be an event called We Are One: A Global Film Festival that will be presented on YouTube from May 29th to June 7th, 2020. The event will feature programming from 20 major film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, New York, Toronto, Tribeca, and Venice. One of the festivals that will not be participating is SXSW, because they are already partnering with Amazon for a separate event now streaming (4/27 to 5/6).2. TRANSFORMERS GETTING ANIMATED PREQUEL FROM TOY STORY 4 DIRECTOR (Photo by De Laurentiis entertainment Group courtesy Everett Collection)Although the 2018 solo Transformers spinoff Bumblebee did very well with critics (Certified Fresh at 91%), the box office numbers were relatively disappointing compared to previous Transformers films. For that reason, Paramount and Hasbro have yet to announce plans for any further solo movies for other Transformers characters, even if they continue to develop other Transformers-related projects. With the latter in mind, one of the new Transformers films Paramount is working on is an animated prequel to be set on their home world of Cybertron. That project is now being developed by director Josh Cooley, who made his feature film debut last summer with Toy Story 4 (Certified Fresh at 97%), which went on to earn over billion at the global box office and win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.3. JOSH BROLIN AND PETER DINKLAGE TO STAR IN TWINS-ESQUE COMEDY BROTHERS(Photo by RCF, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)After starring in several acclaimed indie dramas (notably Blue Ruin, Certified Fresh at 96%), Macon Blair moved on to directing with his debut film, Netflix s I Don t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (Certified Fresh at 89%). For his next film, Blair has signed with Legendary Entertainment to direct a Twins-esque high-concept comedy called Brothers. Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in Twins as a pair of odd couple brothers, and the brothers in Brothers will be played by two Avengers: Infinity War stars. Those stars will be Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones) and Josh Brolin (Marvel s Thanos and Cable), but the comedy angle besides them being Brothers isn t yet known.4. DAISY RIDLEY SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR THE ICE BENEATH HER  (Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Now that the Star Wars Skywalker Saga  is officially done, Daisy Ridley is one of the recent franchise stars who has a lot more time on her hands. We re still awaiting the release of one of those projects, the post-apocalyptic Chaos Walking, and this week, she started negotiations for  another. Ridley is now in talks with STXfilms to star in the psychological thriller The Ice Beneath Her, which will be produced and directed by the people behind last year s Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). The Ice Beneath Her is an adaptation of a 2015 novel by Swedish author Camilla Grebe which has been compared to both Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Dungeons Dragons, Hello Kitty, and Searching 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYALEJANDRO GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU HAS BEGUN FILMING HIS NEXT PROJECT(Photo by ©Roadside Attractions courtesy Everett Collection)Getting a feature film produced is difficult enough, even without the spectre of the COVID-19 pandemic looming over society for the past year or so. Just over five years ago at the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (Certified Fresh at 78%), which also won Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this week, Iñárritu was finally able to start filming his first feature film in the five-plus years since. The project, called Limbo, is now filming on location in Mexico City. Iñárritu also wrote the film, which doesn t yet have an official synopsis, except that it explores the political and social modernity of Mexico. Iñárritu s choice to film in Mexico City following his Hollywood success with The Revenant could also be compared to Alfonso Cuaron s Roma (Certified Fresh at 95%), which was filmed in Mexico City following his own Hollywood success with Gravity (Certified Fresh at 95%). No casting announcements have been made yet for Limbo.Other Top Headlines1. J.J. ABRAMS HIRES FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK FEATURE SCREENWRITER(Photo by Paramount Pictures)It was just last week that producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company hired award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to work on the new Superman reboot (featuring an actor of color as the lead, for a historic first). This week, Abrams moved forward with another first as Bad Robot has hired screenwriter Kalinda Vasquez to work on the next Star Trek feature film. This project should not be confused with the Star Trek that Quentin Tarantino was announced as partnering with Abrams and Bad Robot in 2017 (as that one appears to have cooled down in the years since). If Vasquez s work on this project makes it to production, she will become the first woman ever to write a Star Trek feature film. In addition to serving as executive producer on shows like Runaways, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, and Fear the Walking Dead, Kalinda Vasquez has also written episodes of all of those shows, plus four episodes of Prison Break and seven episodes of Nikita. It is not yet known if her Star Trek project will introduce a new cast or use one of the previous casts (like say, the Kelvin crew of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, etc.) Paramount Pictures does not currently have any Star Trek feature films on the studio s release schedule.2. ANNETTE BENING TO PORTRAY RECORD-BREAKING SWIMMER DIANA NYAD (Photo by Suzanne Tenner/©Focus Features)Diana Nyad is a record-breaking long distance swimmer whose accomplishments include swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, swimming from Jamaica to Florida, and swimming around the island of Manhattan in under 8 hours. Nyad s amazing life is now set to be adapted as the biopic Nyad, with four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening attached to star. Nyad will mark the narrative feature film directorial debut of the team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for their 2018 documentary Free Solo (Certified Fresh at 98%), which depicted a similar form of endurance sport (free solo mountain climbing). Nyad is being adapted from her autobiography Find a Way, with filming expected to start sometime this summer.3. RUSSELL CROWE TO STAR AS ABSTRACT ARTIST MARK ROTHKO (Photo by © Universal Pictures)There have obviously been dozens of biopics about famous painters, but so far, we have relatively few to date about abstract painters (Pollock, Certified Fresh at 80% starring Ed Harris, is a notable exception). That field will soon expand as the life of artist Mark Rothko is about to be portrayed by Russell Crowe in Rothko. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings of large fields of bright colors in squares or rectangles. Rothko will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy). The Rothko cast will include Irish actress Aisling Fraciosi (as Rothko s daughter), Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg, and the director s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Marvel s Avengers: Age of Ultron). Adapted from the book The Legacy of Rothko by Lee Seldes, Rothko will focus on the protracted legal dispute between Kate Rothko and the painter’s estate executors and the directors of his gallery, Marlborough Fine Art, which you can read more about here.4. MELISSA MCCARTHY TO PORTRAY MAJOR MARVEL VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER SORT OF (Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)Some of the funniest surprises in Taika Waititi s Thor: Ragnarok (Certified Fresh at 93%) came early in the film when we first saw some Asgardian actors depicting the events of earlier Thor movies, including Matt Damon as Loki, Sam Neill as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth s brother Luke Hemsworth as Thor. There has been a fair amount of new coverage of actors like Matt Damon returning to Australia for filming of the fourth movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), but this week, we actually heard about someone new. Several photos have emerged online this week of comedic actress Melissa McCarthy in costume on the sets in Australia as the villainous character Hela, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, with the other actors-playing-actors like Matt Damon also on set with McCarthy. In similar news, we also learned this week that the upcoming sports comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/6/2021) will also feature cameo appearances by some of Warner Bros other film properties, including Batman, Mad Max, and Casablanca.5. THIS WEEK IN MUSICAL BIOPICS: BOB MARLEY, AND ROBBIE WILLIAMS (AS A MONKEY?)  (Photo by Everett Collection)Although both films are now a few years old, the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 89%) continue to have a ripple effect on other musical biopics getting produced. That includes musical biopic projects which have languished in development for years, or in some cases, decades. The life story of famed reggae musician Bob Marley is one such example. Paramount Pictures is finally getting closer to production with the news this week that the studio has hired director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who comes to the Bob Marley biopic even as he continues work on another biographical film, King Richard, about the father (played by Will Smith) of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In a sad coincidence, the movement on the Bob Marley biopic comes in the same week that saw the passing of Marley s musical partner Bunny Wailer at the age of 73. British pop star Robbie Williams is also getting a biopic called Better Man to be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). In a bizarre revelation, this week, Deadline reported that the role of Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, apparently, quite seriously.6. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MOVIE CASTS DETECT EVIL SPELL ON HUGH GRANT (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Actor Jeremy Irons has had a film career with many great heights, but one of his lowest lows may have come in 2000, when he starred as the evil villain in the first Dungeons Dragons feature film (Rotten at 10%). One has to speculate that Hugh Grant is hoping for a better result with his decision this week to take the role of the main villain (called Forge Fletcher) in the new Dungeons Dragons movie (5/27/2022). Sophia Lillis, who has recently starred as both Nancy Drew and Beverly in the IT movies, has also take a role as a character named Doric (neither of these names seem to point towards popular characters from existing D D stories). This new Dungeons Dragons reboot is being written and directed by the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also collaborated on Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%). It is not yet known if the Dungeons Dragons movie will be set entirely in a fantasy world, or if some part of it might also depict real world players. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are joining a cast which already includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.7. WRINKLE IN TIME STAR STORM REID MAY GET LOST IN SEARCHING 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although it wasn t a box office blockbuster, the independent social media mystery drama Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) was still a surprise hit relative to its budget. Jon Cho and Michelle La starred as father and daughter in the first Searching, but apparently for the upcoming sequel, a new cast is being sought as the formula will be applied to a new family and setting. We don t know specifically how different or similar the sequel s premise will be, so we have relatively little to guess on, but we can report that 17 year old actress Storm Reid is now in talks for a lead role in Searching 2. Reid made her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave, had the lead role in A Wrinkle in Time, and is also one of Zendaya s co-stars in HBO s Euphoria.8. HELLO KITTY FINALLY GETTING HER BIG SHOT AT THE MEOW-VIES (Photo by Saban International courtesy Everett Collection)The Japanese design company Sanrio has had over 45 years of success with their popular Hello Kitty character, including in the United States, but for the most part, attempts to carry Hello Kitty over in formats like TV or the movies have not taken off outside of Japan. Back in October of 2019, we reported that New Line Cinema had acquired the film rights to Hello Kitty, but we hadn t heard much since then. This week, we finally got confirmation that the studio is actively developing a Hello Kitty feature film that will combine live action and animation (like this week s Tom and Jerry). New Line Cinema has hired two directors for their Hello Kitty movie: Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda. Coyle s credits as director include 23 episodes of DC Super Hero Girls and 13 episodes of Bob s Burgers, while Matsuda s credits are mostly as an animator or story artist on projects like The Simpsons Movie, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia.9. JONATHAN MAJORS TO STAR IN MILITARY DRAMA 892(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)One of the shows that premiered right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were hungry for something to binge was HBO s spooky Lovecraft Country, starring Jonathan Majors. In the months since, Majors was able to translate that show s success to a new gig at Marvel Studios as one of the company s most prolific super villains, Kang the Conqueror, in the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (TBA 2022). This week, Majors signed on for another project, which will be a drama called 892 about a marine war veteran who suffers from PTSD. In somewhat related news, following recent allegations, rapper-turned-actor T.I. will not be returning for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after co-starring in the first two Ant-Man movies. It is unclear if this was always the plan, or if Marvel Studios is making the change based on the allegations against T.I. and his wife Tameka Tiny Harris. Likewise, we also don t know if the other Ant-Man supporting characters played by Michael Peña and David Dastmalchian will be returning or not.On an Apple device? 6.50.1 3月喜迎While sports fans can debate the results of last night s Big Game, fans of Marvel Studios (and sports fans who like Marvel movies) took note of an ad for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which aired shortly after kickoff. The tone was serious as it offered some new glimpses of an Earth after half its population disappeared into dust. But it also suggested a call to action for those with enhanced abilities to upend the new status quo. And as it featured substantial new footage from the movie, let s take a look at some of the things we learned from the 30-second television ad.The Survivor Support Group Supports A Time Jump(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the opening moments, we see a changed New York and an empty stadium to reinforce the monumental loss of life in Avengers: Infinity War. In voice over, we re told some have moved on. The scene cuts to a support group for survivors of the catastrophe Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) among them. All of which supports earlier reports that Endgame would take place some time after the Snap at the end of Infinity War. The length of that time jump is still up for debate with the earliest reports suggesting a real-time gap of roughly a year while others suggest Endgame will pick up several years after Infinity War. Either way, we re definitely getting a Leftovers vibe from the support group.Rocket Is An Avenger(Photo by Marvel Studios)We ll get to Rocket s big moment in the ad later. First, let s take a look at moment late in the spot when Steve s voiceover tells us the Avengers have not moved on. The dialogue is presented alongside a slow motion walk of the remaining Avengers. Rocket is among the group as they Well, let s assume they re on their way to deal with Thanos (Josh Brolin). The earlier Endgame teaser echoed a moment from Marvel Comics  The Infinity Gauntlet storyline in which the Avengers track Thanos down and find his armor propped up as a scarecrow. Its pretty clear elements of The Infinity Gauntlet will inform Endgame the way Thanos s Snap anchored Infinity War.Alternatively, the slow-motion walk may appear early in the film as the silhouettes of both War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) who are featured in a moment of their own appear to be missing. As some astute viewers pointed out, there is also the possibility that an unidentified character was mysteriously edited out of some of the footage in the trailer, including the slow-motion walk.Thor Is Spaceworthy(Photo by Marvel Studios)Our key glimpse of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the ad sees him looking out at a lush, green environment. It resembles the place Thanos viewed in Infinity War s closing moments, further suggesting the Avengers will take the battle back to the Mad Titan. There is also the possibility that Thor is looking out across Wakanda, judging from the landscape, but it s difficult to tell. Considering Thor s new weapon Stormbringer can conjure up the Bifrost or a Bifrost like means of interstellar travel we re going to assume he s been using it to search for Thanos and survivors of Infinity War s space team. But what ship is he on in the ad?The Benatar Survives?(Photo by Marvel Studios)In one of the more curious glimpses in the 30-second spot, Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) appear to be repairing the Benatar the now-abandoned Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship. This could be a moment from their initial departure from Titan or a flashback to happier times, as the first Endgame trailer revealed a lonely, distraught Tony recording a final message to Pepper Potts. But it could also be a moment from later in the film when the Avengers are reunited and use the Benatar to carry the whole team to Thanos. Well, presuming that s the ship on which we see Thor a few moments later in the ad.Consider the moment when Earthbound Avengers Steve Rogers, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Rhodey, and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) walk out of their headquarters and look up at something just out of frame. It could be Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), of course, but perhaps she brought the Benatar (and Thor) with her.Rocket Is First Through The Door(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rocket s key moment in the ad sees him bursting through the door of a seemingly simple shack near an unidentified coastline. This could easily be the shack Thanos built for himself on his retirement world, but it could also be something on Earth. The prominence of the seaside and fishing nets in the background to say nothing of the very Earth-like latch on the door suggest more familiar terrain, but perhaps Thanos always wanted a quiet life by the sea. Then again, maybe Rocket turned to fishing during his time on Earth and it s his seaside shack.Yeah, that doesn t seem likely, considering the guns strapped to his sides.Clint Barton Is Hawkeye Again?Ryan FujitaniThe earlier Endgame trailer prominently featured a sword-weilding Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in an apparent switch of persona to Ronin an identity his comic book counterpart adopted for a time. But in his Big Game Ad appearance, Clint appears to have a pair of quivers strapped to his back. It is fairly safe to assume Black Widow finds him working as Ronin and convinces him to come back to the Avengers, restoring his costumed persona and key gimmick in the process. After all, what would an Avengers movie (besides Infinity War) be without Hawkeye?Steve Rogers Has His Shield Back(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the lead-up to Infinity War, reports suggested Steve would take on the identity of Nomad, another Steve Rogers alias from the comics. This turned out to be more of a thematic idea than a literal one, as Steve was in fact roaming, but his costume turned out to be a very weathered version of the one he wore in Captain America: Civil War. That said, Steve lacked a proper shield throughout Infinity War, continuing an idea from Civil War about Steve s loss of identity. But as seen in the trailer, Steve has his shield back. Since Endgame is the presumed last stand of Captain America, it makes sense that he would be visually restored to his former self. It happens in the comics all the time, so a moment like that should occur in a movie like Endgame.Avengers: Endgame opens everywhere on April 26.

u?The resulting series have been all over the map critically, from projects that were canceled early to ones that ran for years, nearly obliterating the original film from viewers’ minds. It got us thinking about the variety of approaches that creative voices have taken when they try to sing a cinematic song on TV. The jury is still out on whether or not the futuristic vision of Snowpiercer will translate into a multi-season hit, but here are the eight approaches that have worked in the past with an example from the top tier of the film-to-TV canon for each.Make It Your Own: Fargo(Photo by ©FX)When Noah Hawley entered the world of Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1995 masterpiece, he knew a literal approach wouldn’t work (and not just because it had already been attempted in 2003 with Edie Falco as Marge Gunderson in a failed TV pilot). He decided to use the atmosphere and language of the Coen-verse to tell his own stories, and the result became an award-winning critical darling. The best singers don’t just cover a song, they make it their own, reworking it in a way that redefines it. Fargo wouldn’t exist without the work of the Coen brothers, but no one would argue that it’s a direct interpretation of their creativity either. As much as Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal stands alongside both the Thomas Harris books and films, these shows use their cinematic sources as inspirations instead of a template waiting to be copied.Make It a Prequel: Bates Motel(Photo by Sergei Bachlakov/©A&E)Sometimes the best way to adapt a cinematic property is to go back to the beginning. On paper, a young adult version of Norman Bates in contemporary times sounded like a horrible idea; it could have ended up just another teen drama like Gossip Girl, but with a little more murder. But the creators of Bates Motel deftly balanced nods to the Robert Bloch book and influential Alfred Hitchcock film throughout, culminating in a stellar final season that really tied it all together in unexpectedly moving ways. By going the prequel route, the creators had the freedom to tell a new story, even if it ultimately led to a familiar set of stairs.Make It a Corrective: Buffy the Vampire Slayer(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)It may have a cult following now, but writer Joss Whedon notoriously disliked the way his 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer was altered from his original intention. And so he convinced a fledgling network called The WB to give him a second shot at the character in weekly form, and the rest is TV history. It’s funny to watch the film now and see echoes of it in the series, which is darker, denser and more nuanced in ways that Whedon wasn’t allowed to be on the big screen. It’s a case in which the film probably should have been a TV series from the very beginning.Make It Fun: Ash vs. Evil Dead(Photo by Matt Klitscher/©Starz)Twenty-three years after Army of Darkness, no one expected to return to the world of Ash and the Deadites, but along came Starz’s gloriously gory Ash vs. Evil Dead, which carries in every frame an air of “can you believe we’re doing this?” Much like the Netflix reboot of Wet Hot American Summer, this show recognizes the fact that most people involved never thought they’d get the chance to make it, and so they’re going to have as much fun as possible while they can. And that fun can be infectious. Not everything needs to be Prestige TV; sometimes fans of a film just want to rekindle that fun sensibility that made movies like Evil Dead 2 and Wet Hot into cult hits in the first place.Make It Feel New: Westworld(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)One wonders how many people trying to decipher the current season of Westworld have any idea it’s even based on a movie. While some adaptations exist to call back to their cinematic fan bases (see previous entry), others barely acknowledge the existence of the original property. The back story of a show like Teen Wolf doesn’t depend on knowing the Michael J. Fox original, and you don’t need to have seen the 1973 Yul Brynner film (or its truly dire 1976 sequel, Futureworld) to be invested in the saga of Dolores Abernathy and the Man in Black. And that’s just the way HBO likes it.Make It Unexpected: The Girlfriend Experience(Photo by Kerry Hayes/©Starz)Sometimes the best shows are developed from films that no one involved ever thought would become a TV show (Snowpiercer might fall into this category). Steven Soderbergh’s drama about a high-priced escort didn’t exactly scream weekly drama, but the Starz adaptation found new stories to tell within this concept. Sometimes TV shows can even build on their source in ways that make them feel more creatively accomplished, such as Netflix’s Dear White People, which unexpectedly turned a good film into a great series. Going the blockbuster-to-show route can often lead to mediocre product, but shows like The Girlfriend Experience prove that there’s no specific “type” of movie that will succeed as a series.Make It the Same: What We Do in the ShadowsRyan FujitaniThe most common creative tenet of film-to-TV adaptations seems to be “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” After all, if people liked it on the big screen, they’re bound to like it on the small screen, right? While this often produces faded carbon copies of creative ideas, it also just works sometimes. The dynamic between Oscar and Felix in The Odd Couple that went from stage to screen to TV didn’t need to change. The movie Fame practically played like a pilot for the show. And the Taika Waititi hit that blended reality TV filmmaking with vampire lore was a perfect fit for the series, now on FX, without much alteration to the formula other than dividing the storytelling into bloody chunks and a change in location from New Zealand to Staten Island.Make It Emotional: Friday Night Lights(Photo by ©NBC)The main thing the best TV adaptations do is provide a recurring emotional connection that usually naturally dissipates after the credits have rolled on a film. Millions of people spent years with the families on shows like Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, two programs that are arguably on the Mt. Rushmore of film-to-TV because they treated the source material as something not just to copy but to emotionally enrich. The format allowed the creators of these shows to go deeper and make these characters a part of viewers’ families for multiple seasons. People may have first checked out FNL because of the movie, but they hung around because of their emotional connection to the show. If only more film-to-TV adaptations were this good.

Ah, the 1980s: A decade of big hair, shoulder pads, heavy synths, and multiple violent robots and androids. Two stood out from the pack though – Robocop and Terminator – and in our latest episode of Vs. we’re going full robot wars, pitting Paul Verhoeven’s ultraviolent black comedy against James Cameron’s groundbreaking and grungy time-travel actioner. Host Mark Ellis (who comes with zero robot parts), will compare the two original films across multiple criteria including box office performance, Tomatometer and Audience Score, the quality of their characters, and more. Who will be the last bot standing? Tune in to find out.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
King of the Crop: Shazam! Could be the Ant-Man of the DCEU(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)DC’s Shazam! led the box office with .45 million this weekend, on top of the .3 million it earned in early preview screenings. That was higher than projections. Even though that is the lowest opening in the DC Extended Universe, knocking the film for that fact would be like giving Ant-Man a hard time for not living up to the numbers of Captain America or Iron Man. Shazam! is a different beast than the mostly darker offerings from the DCEU, something that critics appear to dig. Shazam! has scored a 91% on the Tomatometer, just shy of the 92% of Wonder Woman. That is also higher than two of the Christopher Nolan Batman films – Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises – which are a universe apart from the current DC crop.Shazam! now currently owns the ninth-best opening weekend ever in April; that will be knocked back to 10th on April 26 when Avengers: Endgame opens. Among the 10 films that had the biggest ever April openings, the low bar for ultimate totals has been set by Fast and Furious (5 million) and 2010’s Clash of the Titans (3.2 million). The two best multiples among April’s top 10 were earned by A Quiet Place (3.74 times its opening weekend) and 2016’s The Jungle Book (3.52). Their Tomatometer scores were both 95%. Audience word-of-mouth looks to be solid for Shazam!, which bodes well for its future. The R-rated Hellboy is unlikely to eat into the DC hit s core audience, and if it can maintain a drop less than 45% it should be on track to earn at least 2 million, and potentially out-earn the original Ant-Man’s 0 million.Rotten Returns: Best Of Enemies Struggles to Find Allies (Photo by @ STX)The Best of Enemies opened with .5 million from 1,705 theaters, representing STX Entertainment s seventh-lowest opening per-theater-average. Critics were mixed on the the movie – it has a 52% Tomatometer score – and audiences didn t show up in impressive numbers. STX had a better month back in January with their Weinstein Co. pickup, The Upside, which remains one of the five highest-grossing films of the year with 7 million. That was the second-best tally (behind Bad Moms) for the studio in its nearly four-year history. The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Stephen King Continues to Draw Crowds, but Can Sematary Match the Original?(Photo by Paramount Pictures)A smart bit of counter-programming from Paramount Pictures saw the newest take on Stephen King s Pet Sematary land in second place with million, despite a less than stellar response from critics. The movie received glowing reviews after its premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival, but is now just barely Fresh with 61% on the Tomatometer. That is better than the reviews for Mary Lambert’s 1989 verion of Pet Sematary (48% with 31 reviews), but without strong word-of-mouth there may now be some doubt that the new movie can reach the .4 million that the original film made 30 years ago. (That is about 7 million in today’s dollars.)There seems little hope that directors Kevin Kölsch Dennis Widmyer’s version can match those inflation numbers off of a million weekend. Among eight horror films that have opened between million and million, only The Visit and 2005’s The Amityville Horror managed to pass million. (Each actually made .2 million.) Another two films – the 2013 s Evil Dead and 2015 s Poltergeist – appear to be more in line with audience response and dropped a respective 63.2% and 64.4% in their second weekends. Tune in next week to see which way Pet Sematary goes.(Photo by @ Universal)Meanwhile, another horror film is climbing the charts of the all-timers. Jordan Peele’s Us is now ahead of 2018’s Halloween after 17 days, with 2.3 million vs. the latter film s 0.2 million total. That’s the second-highest ever for a horror film. It also bested Halloween’s third weekend (.8 million to .8 million). Pet Sematary took some viewers away from Us this weekend but more people will still be talking about Us next week as it continues to forge a path towards 0 million. Its international total is 6.5 million. One film not headed to 0 million – at least not on the domestic front – is Tim Burton’s Dumbo. It is the 13th film from Disney released in over 3,000 theaters to drop 60% or more in its second weekend. With million after 10 days that puts Dumbo behind 1999’s Tarzan, Lilo Stitch, and Wild Hogs on the Disney charts. The film has made an additional 7.5 million internationally for a total of 3 million to date. It is going to need more than half-a-billion to break even.Good thing that Captain Marvel’s numbers are still looking super. Its 4 million domestic take is the 19th highest gross ever after 31 days of release. And the .6 million it earned this weekend is the 21st best fifth weekend ever. It is now the 37th film to cross the billion mark globally (and the seventh Marvel Cinematic Universe film to do so) and it continues to climb both of those charts. This weekend it also become the 30th highest-grossing film ever. This Time Last Year: A Quiet Place Began Its Record-Breaking Run(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place opened to .2 million, beginning its run towards becoming one of the biggest horror films of all time. The Universal comedy Blockers came in third with .5 million and the Ted Kennedy drama Chappaquiddick opened in seventh with .7 million. Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One was just two days away from passing 0 million domestically. That movie s .6 million second weekend helped the top 10 films gross a total of 0.86 million with an average Tomatometer score of 60.9%. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 8.59 million and averaged 64.7% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Hellboy Offers Darker Fare, Little Riffs on Big(Photo by Eli Joshua Ade /@ Universal)If Shazam! was too family-friendly for you and you cannot wait until Avengers: Endgame, then Lionsgate’s reboot of Hellboy with Stranger Things’ David Harbour might satisfy your hunger for R-rated comic-book fare. Once there was Tom Hanks in Big, now Universal presents Regina Hall in Little, a modern reversal in every respect that sprung from the mind of 14-year-old black-ish star Marsai Martin. Laika Animation is back with its latest, Missing Link, and Aviron releases the adaptation of young adult novel, After. Then for one night only on Wednesday, April 10, you can see Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, a film 21 years in the making. The Full Top 10: April 5-7Shazam! In this first full month of summer, you ll want to catch up with some beloved series of years past to enjoy some of the one-off specials and TV movies hitting in July. Plus, some other small-screen favorites return for their sophomore seasons. Catch up on everything we think you should be watching this month with July 2020’s guide on what’s worth your precious binge.    Hanna 80% (Amazon Prime Video)What it is: This long-form television adaptation of Joe Wright’s 2011 feature tells the scintillating story of a young assassin raised in the woods — one who, when tracked down by a CIA agent on the prowl, will do just about anything it takes to learn the truth about who she is.Why you should watch it: Four-time Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan left massive shoes to fill for the titular assassin when she originated the role nine years ago, but luckily, 20-year-old up-and-comer Esme Creed-Miles proves equally adept and formidable as the demanding heroine. While season 1 certainly proved a Fresh and satisfying viewing, some complained that it was too much exposition, not enough action. Positive early reviews may hint that Hanna packs more of a punch in season 2, which premieres July 3 on Amazon Prime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first season)Psych 89% (TNT)What it is: As if you haven’t wondered what Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Gus Guster (Dulé Hill) have been up to? While Psych: The Movie reunited the oddball detective duo in San Francisco (a.k.a. “psychphrancisco”) in 2017, Psych is the gift that keeps on giving. A new sequel, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, brings them back to Santa Barbara to help their old police chief, only to be caught up in a case of the supernatural. Why you should watch it: No, Shawn is not a real psychic, but he’ll have you rooting for him anyway. The original USA Network series, which premiered back in 2006 and wrapped in 2014, followed Shawn as he utilized his impressive observational skills and memory as a Santa Barbara–based crime consultant to trick people into thinking he’s the real deal. But the series succeeds because it does just the opposite and never tries to be something it’s not. Putting affable goofiness to the forefront is what earned Psych it’s devoted “Psych-O” fan base and is what ensures the laughs are going to be hearty with the July 15 film sequel treatment. Catch up now so you can spot all the Easter eggs and call-back guest stars! Psych 2: Lassie Come Home premieres July 15 on Peacock.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 92 hours (for all eight seasons and Psych: The Movie)30 Rock 78% (NBC)What it is: Blatantly inspired by her time at Saturday Night Live, Tina Fey’s 30 Rock (on which she also stars) is a loving ode to the beast that is live television. She plays Liz Lemon, the head writer of sketch comedy show TGS with Tracy Jordan who’s tasked with simultaneously reining in her new boss, Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin). Why you should watch it: Remember when prestige TV was for years through the mid-aughts just the folks behind Mad Men and 30 Rock winning their respective Emmys on an annual basis? If you haven’t watched Fey’s breakout (and best) brainchild, now’s the time to find out just what makes it one-of-the-best-ever comedies of the small screen. The series’ anticipated upfront special airs July 16 on NBC. Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Hulu, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 50 hours (for all seven seasons)The Alienist 77% (TNT)What it is: Based on the novel of the same name by Caleb Carr and helmed by showrunner Stuart Carolan, The Alienist is set in the final years of the 19th century and dives deep into a series of violent, gruesome murders and the mysterious serial killer behind them. Criminal psychologist (a.k.a. “alienist”) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper illustrator John Moore, and police department secretary Sara Howard are called in to conduct a secret investigation to bring the killer justice. Why you should watch it: This series is pitch-perfect period perfection with lurid horror (psychological and otherwise) to spare. Add to the mix a central cast that’s more than up to task, including Luke Evans, Daniel Brühl, and Dakota Fanning in a welcome (and decidedly adult) turn on the small screen, we’re hooked enough to see what this drama has in store for its second round. Season 2, The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, premieres July 18 on TNT.Where to watch: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 10 hours (for the first season)Room 104 88% (HBO)What it is: From the minds of indie film royalty Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass, Room 104 is unlike just about anything else on television. The series sets each of its 30-minute installments (36 total across three seasons) in its titular hotel room through which a varied assortment of characters pass, spending a night or two within its walls and experiencing things that are far from typical. Why you should watch it: Part of the joy of watching Room 104 is bracing yourself for the unexpected. Luckily, the series’ anthology-like narrative means you never quite know what you’re going to get. Genre, tone, time, cast — basically everything but place — changes with each episode. While the diversity allows the viewer to watch it out of sequential order, we still recommend you watch starting with episode 1 if only to appreciate the bigger picture the Duplass brothers are creating. Season 4, its final outing, premieres July 24 on HBO.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 18 hours (for the first three seasons)The Muppets 64% (Disney+)What it is: The Muppets are back! Given Disney’s streaming treatment with Muppets Now, this unscripted series will feature all our favorite characters acting through three different, unscripted and improvised segments of a game show, a cooking show, and a talk show. Watch the trailer above, and it is clear the rest is being held under lock and key.Why you should watch it: At the risk of sounding hyperbolic: Hollywood wouldn’t be what it is today without the Kermit the Frog and his Muppet crew. Since their inception from the mind of puppeteer Jim Henson in the 1950s, they’ve gone on to entertain the masses with 10 feature films, a smattering of on-again, off-again television series beginning with The Muppet Show in 1976, and over 20 television specials. Plus, they’re frequently credited with influencing the young minds and sensibilities of some of today’s biggest Hollywood stars. Muppets Now, premieres on Disney+ on July 31. To get a feel for it all prior to, ABC’s Emmy-nominated 2015 series from creators Bob Kushell and Bill Prady, The Muppets, is a solid place to start.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 5.5 hours (for the first and only season)The Umbrella Academy 83% (Netflix)What it is: An adaptation of Gerard Way’s Dark Horse Comics series of the same name, The Umbrella Academy follows a “dysfunctional family of superheroes” who, as children, were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Now estranged adults, the family reunites to solve the mystery of Hargreeves’ death. Why you should watch it: Led by Oscar-nominee Ellen Page and Merlin alumnus Tom Hopper, the ensemble of imperfect superheroes is what makes this series sweet like candy — the looming apocalypse and genuine heart are just the cherries on top. Season 2 premieres July 31 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 10 hours (for the first season)

mics character — set to debut after the network’s winter break. 2020 will also see the debut of Stargirl on DC Universe, the return of Doom Patrol, and one or two more surprises. But looking at the upcoming Fall season, there’s still plenty to keep us busy. The Arrowverse will be facing the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover while Riverdale forecasts a world without Jughead. It is a time of Walkers, Titans, and a couple of new women making their mark on the Comics on TV landscape. So let’s take a look at what the 2019 fall season has to offer. And as we did last year, we’ll offer some comic book recommendations with thematic or direct ties to each show.Titans: Season 2 (2019) 81% Returns: September 6 on DC UniverseWhat to Expect: Once Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) breaks free of Trigon’s (Seamus Dever) grasp, he will reopen Titans Tower and reestablish the team with Rachel (Teagan Croft), Kori (Anna Diop), Gar (Ryan Potter), Jason (Curran Walters), and Donna (Conor Leslie). Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly) may also join the new team, but their status is a little more up in the air following their fight with the Nuclear Family. Meanwhile, Deathstroke’s (Esai Morales) children Jericho (Chella Man) and Rose (Chelsea Zhang) escape from his grasp to train with the Titans. It is a move fraught with danger as the legendary assassin is the reason Dick ended the team five year ago. What any of this has to do with the Superboy (Joshua Orpin) who escaped from Cadmus is anyone’s guess.Suggested Reading: The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Ernie Colon, and Adrienne Roy () % Debuts: September 25 on ABCWhat to Expect: Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) is a walking trainwreck. She’s not over what happened in Afghanistan, and she’s not all that great at keeping a job. But her actual skill set makes her the perfect private investigator for the greater Portland, Oregon, area. When not on a case, she also makes sure her brother Ansel (Cole Sibus) has a roof over his head and gets to his job at her pal Grey’s (Jake Johnson) new bar. Things may finally turn around for Dex, but her old war wounds may need to bleed a little bit more before they can heal.Suggested Reading: Stumptown Vol. 1 by Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth, and Lee Loughridge.Batwoman: Season 1 (2019) 80% Debuts: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) returns to Gotham City when she learns her ex-girlfriend Sophie (Meagan Tandy) has been abducted by a new gang themed after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It is not an easy return as she and her father (Dougray Scott) are not on the best of terms and she can barely tolerate his wife, Catherine (Elizabeth Anweis). But as Bruce Wayne’s only living relative, Kate has strong ties to the city and even to Wayne Tower itself, where she may find the tools to remind Gotham that it is defended.Suggested Reading: Batwoman: Elegy by Greg Rucka, J.H. Williams III, and Dave StewartThe Walking Dead: Season 10 (2019) 77% Returns: October 6 on AMCWhat to Expect: Following the Whisperer massacre at the fair, the various Virginia communities plan for war. Michonne (Danai Gurira) will also make her final appearance on the series during the season. Kevin Carroll and Juan Javier Cardenas join Darryl’s band as Virgil and Dante, while Thora Birch joins the Whisperers as Gamma.Suggested Reading: The Walking Dead Vol. 25: No Turning Back by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stenfano Gaudiano, and Cliff Rathburn.Supergirl: Season 5 (2019) 92% Returns: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Leviathan is coming. The shadowy criminal organization is causing plenty of trouble over in the DC Comics Universe, and it should be no different on the Arrowverse’s Earth-38. Meanwhile, Lena (Katie McGrath) has it out for Kara (Melissa Benoist) now that she knows the truth. Will Leviathan use her anger and her technology against Supergirl and the world? Meanwhile, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) will be saying his goodbyes to National City while Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) will be making a return to the 21st Century. On the couples front, both Nia (Nicole Maines) and Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Kelly (Azie Tesfai) will face challenges in their newly formed relationships ahead of the “Crisis,” which will dramatically change the show in the second half of the season.Suggested Reading: Event Leviathan by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex MaleevBlack Lightning: Season 3 (2019) 89% Returns: October 7 on The CWWhat to Expect: The Black Lightning characters will finally meet the Arrowverse during the “Crisis” in December. But before that, Jefferson (Cress Williams) must face the immediate threat of Markovia and its attempts to create a metahuman arms race. The conflict with Markovia may even take the Pierces out of Freeland for a time. Meanwhile, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will continue to look for Grace (Chantal Thuy) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) will become more confident with her powers. Also, Khalil (Jordan Calloway) will presumably find his way out of the pod.Suggested Reading: Black Lighting: Brick City Blues by Tony Isabella, Eddie Newell, Matt Hollingsworth and othersThe Flash: Season 6 (2019) 85% Returns: October 8 on The CWWhat to Expect: Finally answering fan wishes for at least the last few seasons, The Flash will feature two big bads split across the season. The first will be Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy). Initially introduced as Dr. Ramsey Rosso, an acquaintance of Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), he will join Team Flash before his grudge against them explodes into violence. His story will lead The Flash into “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” For Barry (Grant Gustin), the first half of the season sees him facing this prophecy from The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett): for the Multiverse to survive, Barry Allen must die. And in another “Crisis” connection, Tom Cavanagh will play Pariah in addition to a “swashbuckler” version of Harrison Wells featured throughout the season. And for the Ralph Dibny (Harley Sawyer) fans, he will be working the Sue Dearborn case throughout the year, but it is unclear how quickly he will have his fateful meeting with her.Suggested Reading: Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and othersRiverdale: Season 4 (2019) 84% (Photo by The CW)Returns: October 9 on The CWWhat to Expect: The season 4 premiere will feature a special tribute to Luke Perry, who played Archie s (KJ Apa) dad Fred Andrews and died of a stroke in March. Perry’s friend and former costar Shannen Doherty will guest star in a special role in the episode, entitled “Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam.” The series will then dive headlong into the gang’s senior year in high school. As Principal Weatherbee “ascended” with the rest of The Farm at the end of season 3, Riverdale High will get a new lead administrator in the form of Kerr Smith’s Principal Honey. Meanwhile, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) will find himself transferred to a private school where he joins the writer’s program ran by Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer). How it leads to the Spring Break flash-forward — and Jughead’s absence in that scene — is anyone’s guess. Also, Veronica (Camila Mendes) joins Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in a maple rum business. The series will also cross over with new series Katy Keene when it debuts in winter 2020.Suggested Reading: Jughead Vol. 1 by Chip Zdarsky and Erica HendersonArrow: Season 8 (2019) 95% Returns: October 15 on The CWWhat to Expect: In its final 10 episodes, Arrow will see Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) find resolution with people from his past and head off on an impossible mission given to him by The Monitor. Meanwhile, in 2040, Mia (Katherine McNamara) and the New, New Team Arrow face a new challenge as Conner Hawke (Joseph David-Jones) takes on his adoptive brother J.J. (Charlie Barnett) — the natural born son of John Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla Micheals (Audrey Marie Anderson). For his part, Diggle will remain at Ollie’s side through “Crisis,” which will consume the eighth episode of the season. Episodes nine and 10 will form the conclusion of the Arrow story.Suggested Reading: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time by Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, and Gregory WrightMarvel's Runaways: Season 3 (2019) 83% Returns: December 13 on HuluWhat to Expect: Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Molly (Allegra Acosta), Gert (Ariela Barer), Chase (Gregg Sulkin), Karolina (Virginia Gardner), and Nico (Lyrica Okano) are more divided than ever with Gert kidnapped by her own father (Kevin Weisman) and Chase and Karolina being saved as a main course for the aliens who survived the destruction of Jonah’s ship. Also, one of the aliens is probably inhabiting one of the other children. Meanwhile, the other Pride parents are free to follow their own ambitions (for the most part), Morgan La Fey (Elizabeth Hurley) will make her way out of the Dark Dimension and the Runaways will have a run in with Freeform’s Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt).Suggested Reading: Cloak and Dagger: Runaways and Reversals by Brian K. Ghcxuf The NYFCC announced the winners of their 2018 Awards this morning on Twitter. Roma led all winnners with three; Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinametography. Paul Schrader s First Reformed followed with two wins for Best Screenplay and Best Actor. This sets up quite well for Curarón s black and white semi-autobiographical story of his adolescence in 1970s Mexico, as told through the eyes of the woman who raised him. A strong showing with critics groups early will help propel some good will with Academy voters. This morning s announcement also bodes well for Schrader, the writer of Taxi Driver Raging Bull, to secure his ever-elusive first Oscar. The NYFCC Awards are chosen by a group of critics from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, and qualifying online general interest publications. bob电竞官网 This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering a big week for movies based on video games and DC Comics. This WEEK S TOP STORYJOHN WICK DIRECTOR TO ADAPT SAMURAI VIDEO GAME GHOST OF TSUSHIMA(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Sony Interactive Entertainment)John Wick (Certified Fresh at 86%) came out just seven years ago, but in that relaively short time, its three main creators have had several other hits (including the two John Wick sequels, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, and this week s Nobody). Director Chad Stahelski has spent most of that time working on the John Wick franchise, including next year s John Wick: Chapter 4 (5/27/2022), but this week, we learned of a new project. Following the critical and box office successes of Pokemon Detective Pikachu (Fresh at 67%) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), Hollywood is increasingly looking at other video game adaptations, and so Chad Stahelski is now attached to direct Sony Pictures Ghost of Tsushima, based on the popular 2020 samurai video game. Ghost of Tsushima now joins a slate of video game adaptations that Sony Pictures has in the works that includes Uncharted (2/11/2022) starring Tom Holland, Metal Gear Solid starring Oscar Isaac, and The Last of Us as a series for HBO Max. Other projects that Stahelski is developing include a Highlander reboot and the John Wick spinoff Ballerina.Other Top Headlines1. THE SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER REVEALS JAWS-SIZED SYLVESTER STALLONE ROLE (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The arrival last week of Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 73%) seems to have put an end-of-sentence period on one part of the DC Extended Universe as Warner Bros. prepares to move on to other movies like The Flash (11/4/2022) and this year s The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), which ended up being directed by James Gunn following a brief kerfuffle over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2018. Warner Bros. quickly swooped in and nabbed Gunn, and this week, the first (red band) trailer The Suicide Squad debuted online. In addition to all of these cool character posters and the reveal of Starro as the movie s main super villain threat, we also now know that King Shark will be voiced by Sylvester Stallone, who had a brief cameo in Gunn s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The timing of this trailer comes just days after WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff confirmed that there are no plans to revisit David Ayer s Suicide Squad (reportedly Ayer s original take was darker in tone than the released edit) in a way similar to Zack Snyder s Justice League, and also that there are no plans to #RestoreTheSynderVerse either. Finally, speaking of DC Comics movies that aren t going to happen, Joe Manganiello confirmed this week that the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, if it had happened, would not only have featured him as the anti-hero Deathstroke, but would also have introduced a new Batgirl as Batman s sidekick.2. PIERCE BROSNAN CAST AS DC COMICS SORCERER DOCTOR FATE IN BLACK ADAM (Photo by Jonathan Prime/©Universal Studios)Going as far back as the 1940s, when Aquaman was introduced two years after Marvel s Sub-Mariner was a big hit first, DC Comics and Marvel Comics have had competing characters with similar powers or names (The Atom vs Ant-Man, Wonder Woman vs Wonder Man, Swamp Thing vs Man-Thing, etc.). Marvel fans all know Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange now, but that mystical character s introduction in 1963 actually came 23 years after DC Comics similarly named sorcerer, Doctor Fate. Doctor Fate was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, which is going to be introduced to the big screen soon in Dwayne Johnson s Black Adam, and this week, we learned that Doctor Fate s human alter ego Kent Nelson will be played by former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan. This makes Brosnan the second Bond to join a DC Comics project after Timothy Dalton, who plays the Chief in HBO s Doom Patrol. Brosnan s fellow JSA members will include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam has faced a number of filming delays in the last few years (most recently due to COVID-19, obviously), but Dwayne Johnson posted an update this week that filming is expected to start in three weeks.3. MAGICAL DC COMCS SUPERHERO ZATANNA IS ALSO A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Doctor Fate wasn t the only magical DC Comics superhero to make the news this week. Just last week, an investor day image revealed that Warner Bros. was developing a Zatanna movie, and this week, the project was officially confirmed in a proper fashion, with a surprising choice that probably caught many people pleasantly off guard. Director and screenwriter Emerald Fennel (who s also known as an actress for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles on Netflix s The Crown) currently has three Academy Award nominations (for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture) for her feature film directorial debut Promising Young Woman (Certified Fresh at 90%). Studios often swoop in on Oscar winners after the fact, but the particularly astute ones make these moves before the awards are handed out, and that s what Warner Bros. and Bad Robot have done by hiring Emerald Fennell to adapt their magical superhero movie Zatanna. First introduced in the comics in 1964, Zatanna is a long-time member of the Justice League of America who casts spells by saying what she wants to happen backwards (for example, Stnap Ruoy Pord Namtab! might be embarassing for Bruce Wayne), but Zatanna has never been depicted in a live-action film. It s not yet known if Fennell will also direct Zatanna, or if she might even star as Zatanna or another supporting character.4. DAME HELEN MIRREN TO TAKE ON VILLAIN ROLE IN SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)One of the high points of Dame Helen Mirren s early film career was her portrayal of the evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay in Excalibur (Certified Fresh at 80%), and now, 40 years later, she has signed on to play another magical villain. In a somewhat unusual move, the role that Mirren will be playing in the upcoming sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) does not appear to be directly lifted from any of the 70 years of actual Shazam comic books. Instead, the villain Hespera appears to be a new creation, although she is described as being the daughter of Atlas, who is the first A of the anagram Shazam that gives Billy Batson his powers (the stamina of Atlas, specifically). It s not yet known if Atlas or any of the other characters in the anagram will also appear in the sequel. Something that is curious about Hespera being described as the main villain in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, however, is that it differs from the teaser at the end of Shazam!, which suggested that the next major villain would be Mister Mind.5. SALLY HAWKINS AND STEVE COOGAN TO FIND THE LOST KING (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the most surprising history-based news stories of the last ten years was arguably the 2012 discovery of the bones of King Richard III under a parking lot in England. Now, the true story of how that all went down is being adapted as a comedy drama called The Lost King, to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Philomena). This week, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) signed on to play the historian who discovered the remains, with Steve Coogan playing her husband (and also co-writing the screenplay). Hawkins is also currently filming the Princess Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, in which she is expected to be portraying a fictional or composite character (although most of the cast are indeed based on real people).6. SETH ROGEN TO PLAY STEVEN SPIELBERG S FAVORITE UNCLE (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we first learned that Steven Spielberg will soon be directing an unusually biographical film about his life as a child and teenager in Arizona falling in love with the art of filmmaking. Michelle Williams was announced right away as being cast as Spielberg s mother, and this week, another member of the director s movie family has also been cast. Seth Rogen, who previously starred alongside Williams in Take This Waltz (Certified Fresh at 79%), has been cast to play Spielberg s favorite uncle in the currently untitled drama. Spielberg and his casting agents are currently searching for the young actors to play the young Spielberg (who won t be named Steven in the movie) and his friends in 1950s and 1960s Arizona. The drama is expected to start filming on location this summer and be finished in time for a late 2022 release (about a year after Spielberg s West Side Story remake on 12/10/2021).7. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN AFGHANISTAN WAR TRUE STORY COMBAT CONTROL (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Although Netflix seems to have received more media attention over the last few years as a major winner of film auctions, according to Deadline, MGM has taken over that position since the beginning of 2021, and the old school studio continued that aggressive stance this week by winning another hotly sought film rights package. MGM is in final talks to acquire the rights to Combat Control, a war drama to be based on the true story of Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman of the United States Air Force. Jake Gyllenhaal will star as Chapman, who received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his role as a combat controller in Afghanistan in 2002, with the film focusing on the 15 years it took for Chapman s commendation to be upgraded to the Medal of Honor, making him the first airman to receive the medal since the Vietnam War.8. TV SHOW BEWITCHED TO GET A SECOND NOSE WIGGLE (Photo by Everett Collection)Hollywood has been regularly adapting old TV shows into movies since the 1980s (Dragnet was an early example). The results haven t always been great, though, such as the 2005 movie Bewitched (Rotten at 24%), starring Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, based on the popular 1960s show. What s less common is for a studio to actually make a second attempt at adapting such a show after the first movie has disappointing returns, but that is exactly what Sony Pictures is doing with Bewitched. Sony Pictures has hired TV showrunners Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (MacGyver, 12 Monkeys) to start working on a new Bewitched feature film screenplay. Rather than the meta approach of the Will Ferrell movie, this Bewitched is expected to be a closer adaptation of the original show s premise of a witch who settles into suburban domesticity after falling in love with a non-magical advertising executive. Between Zatanna at Warner Bros. and Bewitched at Sony, one has to guess that WandaVision (Fresh at 91%) is having an immediate influence.9. RAMPAGE DIRECTOR TO ADAPT ANOTHER VIDEO GAME WITH SNIPER ELITE(Photo by James Atoa/Everett Collection)Ghost of Tsushima was not the only video game adaptation to make the news this week. Brad Peyton, who has directed Dwayne Johnson three times in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 49%) and the old school arcade game movie Rampage (Rotten at 51%), signed on for another video game adaptation this week. That project will be adapted from the World War II third-person shooter Sniper Elite, a franchise whose latest entry, a supernatural spin-off sequel called Zombie Army 4: Dead War, released just last year. The Sniper Elite movie will tell the story of Allied sniper Karl Fairburne, who engages in a cat-and-mouse chase through the streets of London at the height of the Blitz during World War II, as he tries to save British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from a Nazi assassin. Sniper Elite is being produced by one of the Ubisoft executives who was also behind the Assassin s Creed (Rotten at 18%) movie starring Michael Fassbender. On an Apple device? Wipe your eyes, despairing Spidey-fans: Sony and Disney have pushed through their financing impasse and reached an agreement on the future of Spider-Man.The two companies released a joint statement Friday in which it was announced they will co-produce a third movie in the current Spider-Man franchise – that s the one that kicked off with Homecoming and Far From Home, which has become Sony s highest-grossing movie ever – and Spider-Man would continue his involvement in the MCU.Which is great, given that Far From Home set him up as its future. The third standalone Spider-Man movie will be released July 15, 2021 – in line with the previous two films summer releases. You can read all about the impasse and what it might have meant here. But how did the two sides reach their agreement? According to Variety, the new deal was signed Thursday and negotiations involved all the studio big wigs: Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and Walt Disney Studios President Alan Horn, plus Sony Pictures Chief Tom Rothman. Disney will receive about 25% of the profits from the new film, Variety reports.Read: Your Full List of All Upcoming Marvel Movies – With Key Details! In a statement given to Variety, Feige said: “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”We Love You 3000 Tom Holland! pic.twitter.com/EeEyXoC3Pw Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) August 25, 2019Amy Pascal, whose Pascal Pictures will also produce the next Spider-Man film, said in a statement given to Variety: “This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”What does this all mean for fans? Well, given Feige s track record with the character – he not only co-produced the two recent Certified Fresh Tom Holland live-action films, but worked on Raimi s Spider-Man movies in the 2000s – the news could be cause for celebration.Though it s worth noting that Sony was also poised to do potentially interesting things with the character outside of the MCU: there was the chance of a Venom crossover, and Sony s Oscar-winning animated Into the Spider-Verse film – the best reviewed Spider-Man movie ever at 97% on the Tomatometer – opened up the doors to infinite possibilities.Tom Holland wants to play #SpiderMan for a very, very long time. pic.twitter.com/cKnQIM8BLD Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) July 8, 2019Either way, we re sure Tom Holland is feeling so good today. He told Rotten Tomatoes this year, I honestly would play Spider-Man until I can t walk anymore. Looks like he may just do that.Like this?
