The wait is FINALLY over: Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 is arriving on HBO Max and in theaters (where safe) on Christmas Day – and the director and her star could not be more excited to share the hotly anticipated sequel with the world. The film, in which Gal Gadot reprises her role as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, largely takes place in 1980s Washington D.C., giving Jenkins ample opportunity to play with big Pop colors and trends of the era – shoulder pads! – as well as themes and ideas rooted in that time of American excess. Ahead of the movie’s release, Rotten Tomatoes Editor Jacqueline Coley spoke with Gadot and Jenkins about creating epic action scenes with co-star Kristen Wiig and why the 1980s was the perfect time period in which to tell this story. Plus, Jenkins shares her vision for upcoming epic Cleopatra, which will see her reteaming with Gadot, who will take on the title role.Wonder Woman 1984 is in theaters and streaming on HBO Max on December 25, 2020. On an Apple device? In our latest episode of Vs. we’re paying tribute to cinema’s greatest scream queens… by making them battle it out to the final reel! (To be fair, something each of them has some practice in.) It’s slasher icon Jamie Lee Curtis against sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver against ghostface killer Neve Campbell against fisherman’s not-friend Sarah Michelle Gellar as we seek to crown horror’s ultimate portrayer of the “final girl.” How will the battle play out? Well, first we’re trapping them in a mansion with about 30 escaped-from-a-mental-hospital serial killers… Oh wait, no, not that, that would be illegal. We’re actually comparing their box office performance, Audience and Tomatometer Scores, and the quality of their enemies, and adding a bonus round for good measure. Will it be Ripley, Laurie, Buffy, or Sidney who lives to earn that sweet sequel paycheck? Watch along as Rotten Tomatoes Contributing Editor Mark Ellis breaks it down, then have at us in the comments. On an Apple device? NOTE: The free episode is available until 11:59pm Thursday May 23. Check out the full first episode of DC Universe s misfit superhero series Doom Patrol. It will be available on Rotten Tomatoes for a full week ahead of Doom Patrol s season finale.About the Series: Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of DC s most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part superhero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.Starring: Diane Guerrero as Crazy JaneApril Bowlby as Rita Farr / Elasti-WomanJoivan Wade as Victor Stone / CyborgAlan Tudyk as Mr. NobodyMatt Bomer as Larry Trainor / Voice of Negative ManBrendan Fraser as Cliff Steele / Voice of RobotmanTimothy Dalton as Niles Caulder / The ChiefRiley Shanahan as Robot Man (on-set performer)Matthew Zuk as Negative Man (on-set performer)Doom Patrol’s remaining episodes are available to stream on DC Universe.

This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering stories for titles like Bambi, Lethal Weapon 5, The Matrix 4, and more Transformers. This WEEK S TOP STORYTHE THING TO BE REMADE AGAIN(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)John Carpenter s science fiction horror movie The Thing remains one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed (Certified Fresh at 84%, Audience Score 92%), but explaining its cinematic genealogy gets tricky. The 1982 film was actually a remake of 1951 s The Thing from Another World (Fresh at 89%), which was itself adapted from the 1938 novella Who Goes There? We also have to fit in the 2011 movie also called The Thing (Rotten at 35%), which was actually a prequel to the 1982 film. And then, last year, a new book called Frozen Hell: The Book That Inspired The Thing was published, adding another 45 pages to the original novella to make it a proper novel-length story. So, now that we have a longer version of the story behind The Thing, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse are teaming up to fast track a new adaptation. This new movie promises to be a direct adaptation of author John W. Campbell, Jr. s original story, but it s also going to be remaking the story of at least two of these previous movies. It s also worth noting that this whole thing originally started with a Kickstarter campaign, which you can read about right here.Other Top Headlines1. DISNEY TO GIVE BAMBI THE LION KING TREATMENT(Photo by ©Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)The world has gotten very used to seeing new remakes of classic Walt Disney animated films a couple times a year (Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King last year, and the upcoming Mulan on 3/27/2020), but it s far from a very recent phenomenon. Back in 2016, there were already enough such movies that Saturday Night Live was able to make a spoof trailer starring Dwayne Johnson as a gun-toting, cigar-chomping, live-action Bambi. We ve now gotten far enough from that parody that we can report, without irony, that Walt Disney Pictures is indeed developing a remake of the 1942 baby deer drama Bambi (Certified Fresh at 90%). The way these remakes are announced is changing, as the language live action is now dropped in favor of photo-realistic CGI, which acknowledges what most people realized, namely that a movie like last year s The Lion King was not live action. Screenwriters Geneva Robertson-Dworet (co-writer of Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (co-writer of the upcoming Chaos Walking) are now working on a screenplay that will update the dialogue and narrative of the original 1942 classic.2. TWO NEW TRANSFORMERS REBOOTS IN DEVELOPMENT (AND ONE MIGHT BE BEAST WARS)The 2018 Transformers prequel Bumblebee (Certified Fresh at 92%) earned over 8 million worldwide, which is a lot of money, but it was perceived as a disappointment, because it was part of a franchise that has had two movies that earned over .1 billion (movies #3 and #4). Probably inspired by those prior successes, Paramount Pictures has announced that it is developing two separate projects to revamp the Transformers franchise. The screenwriters working on these new projects are James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Murder Mystery) and Joby Harold (co-writer of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword). Officially, Paramount hasn t said what either of these two movies is about, but rumors quickly spread online this week that one of them might be Beast Wars, which is basically about Transformers that turn into animals instead of cars and planes. You can read about other directions Transformers might go next in this piece over at Collider.3. PRIYANKA CHOPRA JONAS TO JOIN THE MATRIX 4(Photo by Ganesh Patil/©Aanna Films)Ever since Warner Bros. and the Wachowskis confirmed last summer that The Matrix 4 is officially a go, we ve received a steady drip of casting news, both old (Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss) and new (Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). The latest addition to the cyberpunk saga to be announced is Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the now more available star of ABC s Quantico, which ended its three-season run in 2018. Priyanka Chopra Jonas is also both a singer and a Bollywood star with over 60 films to her credit. Warner Bros. is currently remaining quiet on the nature of Chopra Jonas character (as they have been for all of the new cast members). The Matrix 4 is currently scheduled for release on May 21, 2021, up against John Wick Chapter 4, which is obviously another fourth franchise installment starring Keanu Reeves.4. PEE-WEE HERMAN S NEXT ADVENTURE MIGHT BE WITH THE SAFDIE BROTHERSThe way that Hollywood works leaves some projects waiting for years and years (or decades) to get produced, and many movie concepts just never happen at all. Comedian Paul Reubens most well-known character, Pee-Wee Herman, lay dormant for a long time, but starting in the 1990s, Reubens had a screenplay treatment in which Pee-Wee would emerge from a dark period in his life as a celebrity, mirroring what he himself went through. Hollywood, however, never bit on that premise, so instead his comeback came in 2016 with the Netflix movie, Pee-Wee s Big Holiday (Certified Fresh at 80%). Paul Reubens now hopes to finally get that dark Pee-Wee Herman movie produced, having recently talked to the Safdie Brothers (Uncut Gems, Good Time) about getting it made. (Stay tuned for any news about them actually signing on.)5. ANDY SAMBERG S PALM SPRINGS SETS SUNDANCE RECORD BY 69 CENTS (SORT OF) (Photo by ©Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)Every January, distributors both big and small head to the Sundance Film Festival in the hopes of snapping up one of the festival s most talked-about movies for amounts both frugal and ambitious. It is, however, those larger amounts that generally make the most news (especially since so many of those projects end up having disappointing box office results upon release). Until this week, the record was held by 2016 s The Birth of a Nation (Certified Fresh at 73%), which was acquired by Fox Searchlight for .5 million. With that amount very much in mind, Neon and Hulu broke the record this year by acquiring the Andy Samberg comedy Palm Springs for a total of ,500,00.69, which is exactly 69 cents more than the previous record. It made for a great headline, but this news comes with a big asterisk, because The Birth of a Nation was a deal for just theatrical, while this deal is for both theatrical and streaming (Hulu), so it s not exactly apples-to-apples.6. ELDERLY CAST OF LETHAL WEAPON GETTING BACK TOGETHER(Photo by (c)Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)At 64 (Mel Gibson), 73 (Danny Glover), and 76 (Joe Pesci), the cast of the Lethal Weapon franchise truly are now very close to being  too old for this s t. On the other hand, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence just reunited earlier this month for Bad Boys for Life to pretty great box office numbers, so you can pretty much guess what the Lethal Weapon guys are doing. During a recent roundtable interview, producer Daniel Lin revealed that Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, and director Richard Donner are currently all in talks to return for a fifth film. It s unclear if there is an actual screenplay for such a reunion, but there have been reports off and on over the 22 years since Lethal Weapon 4 (Rotten at 52%), so perhaps they re thinking of just dusting off one of those old screenplays and adding more arthritis and Viagra jokes. Did we mention they re old?7. KEVIN HART S NEXT ACTION COMEDY STRAIGHT MAN TO BE JASON STATHAM (Photo by Warner Bros.)After starring in a couple of movies with Ice Cube (Ride Along, Ride Along 2) and more than a couple with Dwayne Johnson (Central Intelligence, and two Jumanji movies), Kevin Hart has found the next action star with whom he can pull off his comedy high jinx. Hart and Jason Statham will co-star in the action comedy The Man from Toronto, about an assassin who goes by the titular codename who is mixed up with a regular guy, leading to the obvious action movie duck-out-of-water shenanigans. The Man from Toronto will be directed by Patrick Hughes, who previously worked with Statham on The Expendables 3 (Rotten at 32%).8. HOLLYWOOD S REBOOTING OF THE 1990S CONTINUES WITH ANACONDA(Photo by (c)Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)One of the most complained-about Hollywood trends is the perceived new obsession with reboots and remakes, but it s worth remembering that this is far from a recent phenomenon, like at all. Classic Hollywood is full of remakes, such as 1931 s Frankenstein and 1939 s The Wizard of Oz, both of which were originally produced as silent movies decades earlier. Generally speaking, Hollywood tends to remake films that are anywhere from 20 to 40 years old. Average those numbers and you get 30 years, which means we re primed for movies of the 1990s to be updated for contemporary audiences. The latest example this week is the 1997 giant snake movie Anaconda (Rotten at 40%), which was an early movie for Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, and Jennifer Lopez. Columbia Pictures is now working on a Anaconda reboot/remake which will be written by screenwriter Evan Daugherty, whose previous films include 2014 s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rotten at 22%) and Snow White and the Huntsman (Rotten at 49%).9. ADAM SANDLER SIGNS NEW NETFLIX CONTRACT(Photo by (c)Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)According to Netflix, since Adam Sandler first started making movies for them in 2015 with The Ridiculous 6 (Rotten at 0%), subscribers have collectively watched over two billion hours of his movies on the streaming service. Exactly how Netflix s streaming numbers translate into their production decisions has always been somewhat nebulous, but whatever the math, Netflix agreed this week to a new contract with Sandler for another four movies. These four movies will include an animated film that Sandler will write, produce, and star in, but the title and details of that movie haven t been revealed just yet.Like this? Ghcxuf 11 Things We Learned from Brie Larson on the set of Captain MarvelMarvel released a new trailer for Captain Marvel on Monday night and it demonstrated the power Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) can wield when faced with Skrulls, space battles and S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjets. It also hinted at the character s sarcastic streak with a few choice bits of dialogue. And, finally, the trailer offered a few sneak peeks into the story with Carol s apparent return to Earth in pursuit of some wayward Skrulls inspiring a search for her real identity.Of course, the trailer still favored its need to tease over explicitly telling us much, but we gleaned some great info from the 2 minute and 18 second preview. Here are five things it made clear.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Lady On The Train Is A SkrullIn the wake of the first trailer, many were concerned by the shot of Carol punching an older woman on the train – which we established last time is the Los Angeles Blue Line – but others surmised the woman would in fact turn out to be a Skrull. And those who were correct did not have to wait until March to have their suspicions confirmed. In the new trailer, we see the moment after Carol makes contact in the train car. The Skrull, while remaining in the form of an older woman, fights back in what we hope will be a slightly longer fight scene in the finished film. The Skrulls themselves date back to 1962 s Fantastic Four #2. The race of alien shape-shifters saw Earth as a key strategic vantage point in their war against the Kree. Unfortunately for both sides, the arrival of superheroes on Earth tipped the balance and eventually led to the Avengers becoming involved in the conflict. After thousands of years, the Kree-Skrull War ended thanks to Earth s heroes, but the hostility of both races never abated. In the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems the Skrulls are nowhere to be seen in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, suggesting the Kree-Skrull War ended sometime before the first Iron Man. Of course, their ability to mimic other shapes and powers may mean they are still around today, lurking in secret and waiting for the moment to advance their agenda. That was the plot of the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover event Secret Invasion, in which heroes like Carol s good friend Spider-Woman turned out to be Skrull agents embedded sometime before the full Skrull plan was set into motion. The story was controversial, but the premise could form a solid overarching plot going into the MCU s fourth phase. It remains to be seen if this is the direction the Avengers films will take after the fourth film, but if we had to bet on someone being a secret Skrull, we’re saying its Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). He’s too well adjusted to be a real Marvel hero.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has AmnesiaWhile the previous trailer strongly hinted at the loss of Carol’s memories, this trailer makes it text. From what we can glean, her life on Earth was likely her true history with a second life superimposed on her memory when she made it to Kree space. The previous trailer left people wondering if she was completely an invention of the Kree who merely dreamed she was human. But learning the truth will still have wide-reaching implications as her loyalty will come into question by the likes of Jude Law’s still unnamed character. Skrull commander Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) may be the primary target, but the Kree Empire may not like the Carol Danvers who comes back from Earth after completing the mission.Maybe that’s why she’s been missing in the years between the film and the modern MCU. Returning to Earth could put the planet in jeopardy as the Kree are not exactly the friendliest humanoid species in the cosmos. Consider Ronan’s (Lee Pace) refusal to honor the treaty signed between the Kree Empire and the Nova Empire in Guardians of the Galaxy. The Kree like making war and, perhaps, Carol led them on a 25-year wild goose chase to keep them away from the planet she suddenly discovered was her real home.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“Longer, Stronger, Superior”The line, uttered by Annette Benning in the trailer, is a direct callback to the 2014 Captain Marvel story by Kellysue DeConnick and artist David Lopez known as Higher, Further, Faster, More. The story saw Carol move back into space, form a team of her own, and face the precarious state of interstellar politics. That may turn out to be the rough arc of the film as well. Carol s attempt to recover her memories as an Air Force pilot may uncover a secret both the Skrulls and the Kree want to remain hidden, even if Talos appears to offer it to her during one moment in the trailer. But should she learn the truth, it may lead her back into space for a long time to deal with the fallout.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Mohawks In SpaceThis one may have been a given, but the new trailer finally revealed that Carol’s space Mohawk will be featured in Captain Marvel. The notion that Carol’s space helmet would allow for a Mohawk-shaped slice of her hair to peer through was part of artist Jamie McKelvie’s 2012 redesign for Captain Marvel’s costume – though he admitted early on that Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada suggested the idea. The Marvel executive thought it would be Carol s take on the traditional fin atop a Kree helmet. On the page, it reflects her rebellious streak while the rest of the costume indicates her dedication. Also, as McKelvie saw it, the helmet tells you things are about to get serious when she makes it appear. On screen it looks … well, it looks a little big hokey, but it certainly feels right in the trailer’s later moments when Carol takes the fight back into space.Come to think of it, the entire red-blue-gold color scheme of her costume in those scenes looks great, even if they’re less saturated than the colors of her comic book counterpart. It also appears to serve as a visual divide between the Kree, the Skrulls, and whatever Carol turns out to be after he trip to Earth.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has Her CatAt the end of the trailer, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) kneels down to pet a cat named Goose. While the S.H.I.E.L.D. records facility appears to be its home, the feline is an obvious reference to the comics, in which Carol owns a small cat named Chewie – itself a reference to Carol’s love of Star Wars. Of course, once she heads back out into space in Higher, Further, Faster, More, Carol discovers Chewie is also an alien. According to Rocket Raccoon, who ends up on Carol s ship, the cat is a really a Flerken. The species takes the form of Earth cats, but can also sprout tentacles and even generate pocket universes. He’s none-too-pleased to see a Flerken on board, but the two eventually come to an accord. It remains to be seen if Goose is also an alien, but it represents a fidelity to the source, even if the production still had to change the name. And by featuring it in the second trailer, one can expect the cat will be more than a throwaway gag.Unless, of course, the cat’s true form will be the focus a post-credit stinger.Captain Marvel is in theaters everywhere March 8, 2019. 😈😈

When the Emmy nominations are announced on Tuesday, July 16, there are some names and series that will definitely be on the list: Game of Thrones, Veep, and Chernobyl (and plenty more series and miniseries from other networks) are among the frontrunners. But in a world where around 500 scripted series are set to air in 2019, there s a lot of excellent TV out there that will unfortunately not be recognized by the Television Academy. The Rotten Tomatoes staff wanted to make sure to recognize some of our favorite series and stars that might not necessarily receive a nod come Tuesday, so read on for our list of Emmy underdogs we re rooting for.Superstore 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesOver the last four years Superstore has quietly established itself as one of network televisions’ best offerings. It’s the rare show that can successfully tackle a wide-array of hot-button issues — from identity politics to immigration and every robot-trying-to-take-our-jobs in-between — while consistently providing full-belly laughs. The season four finale alone is a masterclass in finding levity in impossible situations. It also features one of TV s most exceptional (and insanely-likeable) ensembles, who vibe so well off of one another that it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “work family.” It’s smart, insightful, ridiculously funny, and absolutely worthy of awards consideration. – Haña Lucero-ColinBroad City 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesBelieve it or not, Comedy Central’s ode to female friendship from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson has never been nominated for an Emmy, despite its critical success — four of its five seasons are Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer (and the first is CF at a not-too-shabby 96%). Broad City has paved the way for plenty of female-fronted comedies currently on TV, like Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix s animated Tuca Bertie, and Pop TV’s just-premiered Florida Girls — so honoring the groundbreaking sitcom in its fifth and final season would be a fitting end for the series. – Jean BentleyTuca & Bertie 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTuca Bertie is for those wondering how their lives will go on after the end of Broad City. Creator Lisa Hanawalt’s buddy comedy goes to some pretty heavy places, but with a more surreal and absurdist bent. There’s an array of talented actors voicing the supporting characters (Steven Yeun! Richard E. Grant! Isabella Rossellini!), but Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish really bring the endearing, sloppy charm of these characters to life. An Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nom for either would be awesome, but the show’s adult themes and newness probably won’t work in its favor. – Sara AtaiiyanOne Day at a Time 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTalk about a Cinderella story. Imagine this: The critically acclaimed sitcom reboot that Netflix axed following its third season, but which — after a long fan campaign — was saved by Pop, takes home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Gods, wherever you are: Make it happen. It would be a miracle of course, but it would be a well-deserved one. One Day at A Time, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce and executive produced by Norman Lear, has shown that the multi-camera sitcom can still be hilarious, heartfelt, and just as edgy as many of the rougher-edged comedies on streaming and cable. The setup is simple — a working-class Cuban-American family lives in an apartment building where they are friendly with their hipster landlord — but the character arcs and writing are anything but. Watch how skillfully the showrunners blend complex narratives about immigration and gentrification into the laughs, and how organically season-long storylines coalesce. It’s smart, underappreciated stuff. As are the performances, particularly from Justina Machado as the mother trying to keep everything together and Rita Moreno as the scene-stealing live-in grandma, Lydia. – Joel MearesBoJack Horseman 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesSeason 5 gave Bojack his Horseman-aissance after being cast in an edgy TV show. We also got a deeper look at supporting characters Diane, Princess Carolyn, and everyone’s favorite asexual, Todd. Maybe it’s because of and not despite the fact that it’s a cartoon that allows the series to deal so astutely with questions about what it means to be person who’s trying to be better, and the #MeToo movement. – AtaiiyanFleabag 100%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesPhoebe Waller-Bridge is seemingly a lock for a comedy actress nomination, but with the comedy series category overstuffed with hilarious options, we’re unsure if this member of our exclusive 100% club is an underdog or a frontrunner. Look at the contenders: Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, The Kominsky Method, The Good Place, GLOW, Russian Doll, black-ish, Schitt s Creek, Better Things, and on. What’s a Fleabag got to do to get some recognition around here? – Debbie DayThe Good Fight 95%, Outstanding Drama SeriesThis tight and punchy spin-off to The Good Wife is the single best reason to subscribe to CBS All Access (and there are a bunch of very good reasons its competing against, with The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: Discovery available on the streaming service). The super-smart and sometimes surreal legal drama offers fascinating cases — many of which touch on “big issues” in tech and politics in small and intimate ways — and a compelling crew to tackle them. Chief among that crew is Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski, who deserves her Emmy, now!), who featured in The Good Wife, and she’s well-matched by rising star and new mom Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), senior partner Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), and the scandal-hounded young Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who’s taken a liking to Fentanyl lollipops in season 3. The Good Fight deserves its nomination not just for being the smartest legal drama out there, but for being one of the few shows on TV right now to grapple with — and laugh at — some of the meatiest issues in American politics, law, and society. – MearesBusy Tonight , Outstanding Variety Talk SeriesBusy Philipps translated her personable, intimate online presence into a TV show that felt more like eavesdropping on friends hanging out than a traditional late-night series, which made Busy Tonight’s untimely cancellation sting a little bit more. The actress proved to be both a likable and skilled host, and her accomplishments deserve to be recognized. – BentleyEmmy Rossum, Shameless 82%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesFor years Emmy Rossum has been turning in some of the best work of her expansive career on Shameless, and for years the TV Academy has been ignoring her in favor of William H. Macy’s much showier role as the deadbeat patriarch of a large Chicago family. But Rossum’s performance as the eldest child keeping her siblings together as they struggle to keep their heads above water is at times hilarious and heartbreaking, and what better way to repent for their years of ignorance than by the Academy recognizing her work in her final season on the show? – BentleyCatherine O’Hara, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesCatherine O’Hara has never won an Emmy award for acting, and that, in and of itself, is criminal. O’Hara, who currently stars as matriarch Moira Rose on Canadian Pop TV sensation Schitt’s Creek is as good as it gets. Schitt’s Creek itself deserves all the awards. From the writing to the acting to hair and makeup, the series is genuinely one of the greatest shows to ever hit the small screen, but what O’Hara brings to Moira makes the character so special and the actress so deserving. She has given an unlikable person a depth and a growth that is unseen in on television today. She is eccentric, she is quick-witted, she is wearing a fabulous wig, and she truly deserves to be in the conversation for best actress in a comedy series. – Zoey MooreSuranne Jones, Gentleman Jack 90%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama SeriesNot content to simply act the role, Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones paints her worldly, outsider character, Anne Lister, with bold strokes into otherwise placid scenes of lush 19th–century West Yorkshire, England. When she takes on local graft, she bares her teeth with such palpable menace that in her more vulnerable moments — as when she confronts a skittish lover — her tears break hearts. But in a category stuffed with meaty dramatic roles performed by names more familiar to voters, Jones, like her Lister, seems an upstart with an uncertain fate. – DayStephan James, Homecoming 78%, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama SeriesSam Esmail’s Homecoming was one of the best reviewed series of 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. This taut adaptation of the beloved narrative podcast played out like 11 little shots of Hitchcock — a slow burn that caught fire as the story evolved, back and forth through time, with twists upon twists and some of the finest performances of the year. Julia Roberts has been rightly lauded for her put-upon Heidi Bergman, and Bobby Cannavale gives excellent Cannavalian obnoxiousness as Colin Belfast. But Stephan James, as military veteran Walter Cruz, gives what could be a pretty cold affair its warmth and heart and makes that final diner scene so damn devastating. – MearesAnnie Murphy, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesYes, Twitter, we know, and we agree: Catherine O’Hara is everything in Schitt’s Creek, and the fact that she doesn’t have four Emmys on a shelf somewhere right next to a collection of Moira Rose wigs is some sort of crime against comedy. But let’s shine equal light on Annie Murphy, who plays the younger socialite-in-the-sticks, Alexis Rose, in the Canadian series. It’s the less showy role — no wigs, no accent — but it’s also stealthily a bit of genius. Murphy plays a ditzy rich girl mid-awakening and every season her characterization deepens. She still gets to nail those insane Alexis lines alluding to a wild past of kidnappings, engagements, and foreign dignitaries, and put out the occasional puppy-dog whine. But she’s also increasingly real, grounded, drawing us into her increasingly tender relationships with her family and Ted. David, giver her an Emmy nom, like, now! – MearesLike this?
