Game developers no doubt hope to score the same sort of critical acclaim as last year s Marvel s Spider-Man.Here are 10 of those pop culture–centric projects — and two honorable mentions — that already have our thumbs twitching in anticipation!STRANGER THINGS 3: THE VIDEO GAMEDeveloper: BonusXPPublisher: En Masse EntertainmentPlatforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PCRelease Date: July 4Following their ravenous consumption of new Stranger Things episodes this summer, fans can dive deeper into the sci-fi horror series third season in a new game releasing day and date with the show. Featuring a charmingly retro visual style, complete with a pixel-perfect Sheriff Hopper, as well as solo and co-op play, Stranger Things 3: The Video Game invites fans to solve puzzles, battle supernatural baddies, and uncover Hawkins — and the Upside Down s — darkest secrets.MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: THE BLACK ORDERDeveloper: Koei Tecmo Games, Team NINJAPublisher: NintendoPlatforms: Nintendo SwitchRelease Date: July 19Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order easily earns its title, as it allows players to assemble teams of iconic characters from all corners of the Marvel Universe. Playing solo — or as part of a four-player super-team — fans can choose from nearly 40 characters, from the Avengers and Fantastic Four to the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. Dynamic action-RPG gameplay, a gorgeous visual presentation, and an original Thanos-thwarting tale round out this fan-pleasing package.BLAIR WITCHDeveloper: Bloober TeamPublisher: Lionsgate GamesPlatforms: Xbox One, PCRelease Date: August 30The future of the Blair Witch franchise might be in limbo, but the cult-favorite film series  faithful followers can return to the Black Hills Forest this summer. A story-driven, psychological horror entry from the team behind the nerve-fraying Layers of Fear games, Blair Witch weaves a fresh, frightening tale, complete with shaky camcorder footage, atmospheric environments, and the sort of imagery that will take up permanent residence in your nightmares.STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDERDeveloper: Respawn EntertainmentPublisher: Electronic ArtsPlatforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PCRelease Date: November 15Gaming s latest take on the galaxy far, far away puts players in the role of Cal Kestis, a Padawan on the run from the Empire s Jedi-hunting Inquisitors. Set shortly after the events of Episode III, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure featuring familiar faces from both the light and dark sides, dynamic lightsaber combat, Stormtrooper-crushing Force powers, and an adorable companion droid that could top BB-8 on the cuteness scale.JUMANJI: THE VIDEO GAMEDeveloper: FunsolvePublisher: Outright GamesPlatforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PCRelease Date: November 15Landing ahead of the holiday season s highly-anticipated Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel comes a new game based on the family-friendly franchise. Embracing the action, humor, and exotic environments of the films, the game features four-player co-op (both online and local) and a delightfully stylized take on the films colorful cast of characters.THE WALKING DEAD ONSLAUGHTDeveloper: SurviosPublisher: SurviosPlatforms: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VRRelease Date: Fall 2019Given virtual reality s immersion-ratcheting nature, it s not surprising so many game developers have leveraged the tech to scare the pants off players. The Walking Dead Onslaught aims to up the ante in this regard, putting brave fans face-to-rotting-face with the franchise s brain-craving foes. Sporting visceral combat — supported by a “progressive dismemberment system” — and a new story, the game also puts players in the boots of their favorite survivors from the AMC series.THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE TACTICSDeveloper: BonusXPPublisher: En Masse EntertainmentPlatforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PCRelease Date: 2019The Dark Crystal renaissance continues with a new game based on the cult-favorite film’s 10-episode prequel series set to hit Netflix this summer, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Dubbed Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, the title combines strategy-focused combat with deep role-playing game elements, all brought to life by a charming visual presentation that should please fans of the original Jim Henson– and Frank Oz–directed film.CYBERPUNK 2077Developer: CD Projekt RedPublisher: CD ProjektPlatforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PCRelease Date: April 16, 2020Cyberpu

It s been nearly two years since the second season of Westworld premiered to HBO and a lot has changed. When we last checked in with the series, which was created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Maeve (Thandie Newton), two robot characters who were initially programmed to bend at the whims of the park s uber-rich clientele, had become fully sentient with violent results.Blind with vengeful rage, Dolores went on a murderous rampage. Before ultimately escaping the confines of the Westworld theme park, the killer host pillaged The Forge, the supercomputer holding all of the guest data the Delos corporation had been secretly stealing.  She caused a flood, deleted a whole lot of those data pearls in the process, and installed her consciousness into the host replica of new Delos boss Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) before heading into the Valley Beyond.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Things for former brothel owner Maeve went a different direction, entirely. After her glitch woke her up, the sentient host infiltrated the inner-workings of the park, enlisting Hector, Armistice and the rest of their outlaw gang, as well as Head of Narrative Design, Lee Sizemore,  to help in the search of her long lost daughter. Unfortunately for her, as she closed in on reuniting with the girl, Delores and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) rained hell upon the park, leaving Maeve shot. As she bled out, she watched her daughter exit the park for greener digital pastures with Native American host Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon).Discovering they were just pawns in a greater reality out-of-their reach is ultimately what drove each character s journey after their awakening was complete. For Bernard, the right-hand to park-creator Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), his realization that he was a synthetic being this whole time — one who was created by Ford in the image of his former partner — was one of the show s big reveals in its first season. This twist (and there were many) led Bernard to enable Dolores on her bloody journey all while attempting to pick up his own mental pieces, while he fell into an identity crisis, of sorts.(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)The HBO series delved further the white hat vs. black hat morality play originally introduced in season 1. It also filled in the blanks regarding the political drama unfolding behind the scenes within Delos. Less-than-savory struggles lie behind the character motivations of Charlotte, Dr. Ford s tenacious young replacement, and Delos investor William (Jimmi Simpson) who evolved into the Man in Black (Ed Harris), the coldhearted gunslinger hell-bent on burning the whole park to the ground. The series, which puts the concepts of free will, corporate greed, and a towering god complex in a blender, gave viewers plenty of answers in the season 2 finale, only to lead us to many more questions once it all ended. Needless to say, ahead of its highly-anticipated return, which takes the story outside of the confines of the park and adds Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) to the mix, expectations are running high. Does the new season live up to the hype? Here s what the critics have to say:SEASON 3 IS A SLICK-LOOKING CYBERPUNK REBOOT(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Ironically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTime has passed since the end of season 2, and we find Dolores dealing with her new life in the outside world. In Los Angeles, everything looks like Tesla s version of Blade Runner, with Cybertruck police cars carving up a clean, Japan-inspired city. — Jennifer Bisset, CNETIronically, the best part of Westworld Season 3 might be those overwhelming visual tableaus: the spectacular shots of a copter floating over a metropolis, the romantic European vistas of Maeve’s WWII world, and even the intimate hell that Caleb is going through. Westworld doesn’t just try to show us a haunted vision of the future, but it immerses us in it. — Meghan O Keefe, DeciderTHIS NEW COAT OF PAINT CAN T COVER UP SOME CLUNKY STORYTELLINGWestworld wants to generate another existential conversation in Season 3, but even as the show swaps settings and introduces new faces, the details that make it come to life are perfunctory. — Brandon Katz, ObserverAction scenes are slick and easy-to-track, but they’re also detached, lacking the gleeful turns and grand lines that punctuated similar thrills from previous seasons. Backstory that used to be unveiled with a flourish is delivered sans showmanship, which can be refreshing when the new intel doesn’t warrant a whole to-do, but only contributes further to the new season’s straightforward execution. — Ben Travers, IndieWirePerhaps the flatness of its new setting might have served, or might eventually serve in the season’s second half, as ironic counterpoint: The peculiarity of the robot uprising exists against a backdrop so flat and familiar as to make it all the more intriguing. But what tends to happen instead is that the flatness inflects every corner of the story and sucks away the vibrancy. — Daniel D Addario, Variety Westworld returns with the batteries charged in an energetic start.— Alberto Carlos, EspinofDOLORES IS A VENGEFUL ROBOT WORTH ROOTING FOR(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Season 3 Dolores is a vast upgrade. She s pissed off, but not blindly ruthless. She s bent on giving humans what she thinks they deserve, but smart enough to know this world doesn t operate like Westworld did. This is the kind of Dolores she should have been all along: a victim you feel empathy for with a cause worth fighting for — she s seen the worst that humans can be and believes her kind is the next step in evolution. She s not a one-note horseman of the robo-apocalypse. — Tim Surette, TV GuideDolores has often been a difficult character to track thanks to her regular identity crises, veering between damsel-in-distress and utterly unsympathetic villain, but in the third season, she finally seems to have hit a pleasant and steady middle-ground. We don’t fully know Dolores’ endgame, but we do know the ruthlessness with which she’ll pursue it and the remarkable capabilities she possesses to see it through. — Haleigh Fouch, ColliderAARON PAUL S PERFORMANCE IS FINE(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Adding Paul as a new main character seems novel at first, but he quickly takes a backseat to everything else. — Chris Evangelista, SlashFilmAaron Paul walks sadly around a skyglass futuretropolis waiting for a popular smartphone app to assign him ATM robberies. — Darren Franich, EWIT S STILL COOL AND QUITE CONFUSING(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)There’s still plenty to be confused about. Westworld is 100% back on its bullshit and, depending on how much you like your TV to be a rug-yanking crash course in skepticism, still presents beautiful illusion after beautiful illusion for you to doubt. — Jacob Oller, Paste MagazineAll of the standard questions Westworld brings up in viewers remain: Is this person real or a host? Is this something happening now, or a flashback or flash forward? What exactly is reality, anyway? If something feels real, and affects someone like a real trauma, does that mean it’s real even if it takes place in a virtual playground? — Ron Hogan, Den of GeekExpect the passions around “Westworld” to erupt once again when Season 3 arrives, confusion reigns and the series’ fans and detractors face off to defend their side. — Lorraine Ali, Los Angeles TimesWestworld season 3 premieres on Sunday, March 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

To close out Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we re celebrating shows and characters that have inspired some of our favorite AAPI creatives working today. We asked the talent behind some of TV s top series — Nelson Cragg of Amazon horror anthology Them, Joy Osmanski of Fox s animated comedy Duncanville and The CW superhero drama Stargirl, and more — about the most influential, favorite, or meaningful television series in their lives. Some of the shows on the list center Asian stories in a way they haven t been seen on television in the past, some star Asian actors in prominent roles, and some are just plain entertaining and relatable and inspired younger actors to pursue their dreams. Read on for a hand-picked selection of TV (perfect for a marathon) so you can celebrate AAPI talent all year long.
(Photo by Rooster Teeth; Mammoth Screen and MASTERPIECE; Dana Starbard/AMC)Updated March 20, 2020There’s so much great stuff to watch, we know. But as cord-cutting becomes more common and networks like NBC, HBO, and CBS decide to stop playing nice with the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu and launch their own streaming/subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms or other over-the-top services (OTT), the question is becoming less about what to watch and instead about where to find it.Some choices are obvious, brought to you by established major media brands and are already very much a part of pop culture vernacular:CBS All Access has been churning out new Star Trek series, including Discovery and, the latest, Picard, in addition to series like The Good Wife spin-off, The Good Fight.Sony Crackle is where to find new shows like crime drama The Oath and classics from its library like The Facts of Life and movies like Adaptation and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Facebook Watch has been around a few years and has become known for drama series like the anthology Sacred Lies.Disney+ launched in November and gave the world the gift of Baby Yoda through The Mandalorian, a TV series set in the Star Wars universe, in addition to other original content and classics from the Disney film archive.Apple TV+ also launched last year and has already made a name for itself with awards-worthy programming like The Morning Show (although we re partial to period dramedy Dickinson. And there’s more to come. Soon, we ll all have the answer to what is Quibi, the streaming platform that promises to give us quality (or at least enjoyable) content in 10-minutes-or-less morsels. Programs and channels owned by WarnerMedia — think cable channels like HBO and TNT as well as soon-to-launch shows and classic programming like Friends — will soon be housed under the streaming platform HBOMax. And NBCUniversal will soon launch its over-the-top streaming option, Peacock.(Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Fandango, a division of NBCUniversal that includes film and television on-demand streaming service FandangoNow.)There are also more all-encompassing options like Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and Pluto TV (the latter of which has expertly curated channels, such as Adam Carolla’s one for car buffs called Chassy). And, in perhaps the ultimate example of clearing the clutter, the service VRV will bundle your select streaming video on demand and fandom content. (One of the service s options is NickSplat, a channel featuring Nickelodeon kids content from the 1990s, including CatDog, Rocko s Modern Life, and The Wild Thornberrys).“With SVOD, if you look at the failures, these are things that are pitched at mainstream, big-stream audience [like Seeso or Verizon’s go90], and they just couldn’t make that work, says Todd Spangler, Variety’s New York–based digital editor.  On the nichier side of things … I think those are genuine, niche genre categories that can support a smaller subscription base and be profitable. They’re not going to be Netflix, but —”What kinds of niche content options are we talking about, exactly? We’ve rounded up some examples of the diverse specialty streaming sites available. Not specific enough? You can always watch that one Roku channel that only airs episodes of the old game show What’s My Line? For TV Addicts Who Love an Accent: Acorn TVThe Acorn TV subscription-based streaming service is one whose “audience is sophisticated, demanding, and passionate about content,” according to General Manager Matthew Graham when he spoke at the winter 2018 Television Critics Association press tour. Its programming is from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. These include celebrated British murder mysteries like Manhunt (92% Tomatometer), and the soon-to-premiere Deadwater Fell (86% Tomatometer), which stars David Tennant and Cush Jumbo. For Unabashed Anglophiles: BritBoxThis SVOD service, which launched in 2017 as a partnership between BBC and ITV, is a speedy fix to anyone craving classic British programming. “What sets us apart from all the others is our ability to present many of these shows within hours of their U.K. premiere,” BritBox North America president Soumya Sriraman told journalists at the winter 2018 TCA press tour. Highlights include Absolutely Fabulous (96% Tomatometer)and Fawlty Towers (100% Tomatometer), as well as newer titles like the sitcom Mrs. Brown s Boys. For Anime-niacs: CrunchyrollLaunched in 2006, this streaming favorite is synonymous with anime and anime-related products like manga, TV dramas, and music. Still, given the plethora of options available from those markets, Crunchyroll Head of Business Operations Brady McCollum tells Rotten Tomatoes that it becomes a “mix of art and science” to find which programs best fit their TV options. While some titles on the site are expected hits — Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia — the fans have been known to surprise them (some examples include Darling in the Franxx and Megalobox). McCollum says the team also “see(s) a bright future in creating originals for our passionate community to come together through extraordinary content. One of Crunchyroll’s first original series will be High Guardian Spice, which is about four girls who learn about friendship and allegiances while studying sorcery and battles. For Bollywood Lovers: Eros NowOne of many over-the-top platforms to celebrate all things Bollywood films and other regional programming, Eros grew out of film production company Eros International and, according to its homepage, boasts 100 million registered users and 7.9 million paying subscribers.  It also has a lengthy list of television shows and original programs, including sudsy dramas like Kuch Na Kaho, a love story about a couple whose families try to tear them apart. For Those Who Prefer Their Heroes With Capes: DC UniverseDC Universe launched in 2018 and is home to favorites like the 1978 Superman movie and new programs like the animated, but certainly not rated-G, Harley Quinn. Subscriptions also give you access to over 20,000 comic books and information on special events and contests. For Gay-Cinema Devotees: DekkooThis Philadelphia-based streaming service is geared toward gay and bisexual men. It s become known for its trove of art house flicks of pretty much any genre that celebrate or highlight characters who happen to be gay. “When we do our original content, we steer toward episodic because it’s more interesting and it keeps customers attached to the site longer,” says Dekkoo COO Brian Sokel, adding that this also came from necessity as not a lot of TV feature diverse gay characters. “What we find from subscribers is they are looking for content that’s for a gay audience … but they want to be able to see content that’s not about a coming out story; it’s just gay characters in larger stories.” Original series include the dating competition series Love Is Blind (which isn t to be confused with the Netflix series of the same name) and the 20-something comedy I’m Fine. For Korean TV Junkies: KOCOWALaunching as a partnership between South Korea’s three major networks, the Los Angeles–based KOCOWA offers a way for those outside of that country to catch its most popular programming just a few hours after they first air. KunHee Park, the CEO of parent company Korea Content Platform has said that the majority of its users are young, female, and not Asian (In fact, the channel launched in Brazil last year, meaning it now also has Portuguese subtitle options). Popular programming include variety shows like Running Man and dramas like Wok of Love. KOCOWA also has licensing deals with similar services, like the Asian TV powerhouse Viki. For Kevin Hart Disciples: Laugh Out LoudComedian Kevin Hart and studio Lionsgate launched this OTT streaming service in 2017 as a way to showcase content that the comedian endorses and curates. (This is kind of Hart s thing; he also is known for Comedy Central s Kevin Hart Presents: The Next Level, which spotlights up-and-coming talent.) Among the programs on LOL are Cold as Balls, where Hart himself takes ice baths next to the hottest names in sports. There are also comedy specials from D.L. Hughley, Iliza Shlesinger, and more. For Your Baby-Daddy s Online Catfisher/Stripper-Girlfriend: Nosey(Photo by Nosey)Nosey may not be the place to find the most high-brow and intellectually stimulating programming, but have we got a service for those who like to watch hour after hour of men sweating it out over paternity tests. This free app, which is available on the likes of Roku and Google Play, is a carefully curated list of programming like Maury Povich, Jerry Springer — so pretty much every program that would make your family seem like one in Andy Griffith. For Players Who Know When to Hold ’Em, Know When to Fold ’Em: PokerGoAn OTT service that’s willing to bet big on the niche factor? Sam Simmons, VP of content for Poker Central, which oversees PokerGo, says the goal of his service is to “combine the existing television success of longstanding programs like the World Series of Poker with world-exclusive original programming, in order to create a year-round entertainment destination for the game that excites both the most passionate fans and casual enthusiasts.” This means they offer over 100 days of live poker coverage as well as original series like Hand Histories, a new series that looks at real-life gamblers and their stories. For Drama (and Comedy!) Queens: RevryAlia J. Daniels and Chris Rodriguez, two of Revry’s founders, tell Rotten Tomatoes that the goal of their LGBTQ-themed streaming service is to be as inclusive as possible. This isn’t just in regards to gender and sexuality; Revry also strives to highlight racial and ethnic diversity. “I think a driving force behind our programming is reflecting the community as we are as opposed to what’s trendy or what big-wig ex

That deeper exploration led to characters who are not just greatly expanded from their comic book counterparts, but deeply changed. Oleff’s Stanley, for example, may still love pot, but that’s where the similarities end. “I read the script for the show first and didn’t recognize the character [in the novel] at all,” he said. In the book, the character’s only real interests are smoking and selling pot. Additionally, Oleff found him “colder” toward the novel’s version of Sydney. On screen, he makes bold fashion choices, listens to a wide array of records (on vinyl), and supports Sydney well beyond the role of drug dealer. “He’s there to help her and he’s really there to be the best person he can be to her,” he said of the upgraded Stanley.“He is so richly unadulterated. He s just so himself,” added Hall. “It s like it s the version of me that I wished I d been in high school as well. It s just that kind of peeling away of that need to please, and that need to be accepted by way of putting on a false version of yourself that others accept.”Dina, Sydney’s best friend, also represents one of the more radical departures from the graphic novel. Instead of the nihilistic punk rock girl barely invested in any part of her reality, the television Dina is, as Bryant put it “this cool and fun and confident best friend to Syd.” She also envisions having a life beyond high school and even cares about Brad.“She’s reliant on Brad [in the book],” she recalled. “But it seems like she hates him.” Like Oleff, it led to some reflection on the character in the scripts and even some puzzlement on how the characters relate to one another. But she came to ultimately understand this alternate Dina. And in building the character up from the dysfunctional version in the novel, Bryant felt the characters also avoids certain pitfalls of the black best friend trope often seen in YA series. “I think with trying to give her more layers in general, it really is us trying to explain and have everyone represented not only by race, but the things they’re going through, she said. Yes, Dina is a PoC, but it’s more about how she goes through the things in her life and how the people around her impact her life.”(Photo by Netflix)And while Ellis found Brad to be an even more despicable character in the book, he appreciated the chance to play a person with little-to-no filter. “I look at it as a lot more fun than challenging, he said. When you can take that pressure off of yourself, you can really be awful and there are no consequences for it. If anything, it’s encouraged to lean into that character trait.” Granted, he and Bryant both agreed there must be something positive Dina sees in him – even if Sydney cannot fathom it. “We only see his worst qualities [though Sydney]. To be someone who is well liked, he has to be charming and funny,” Ellis said.Reflecting on the way the show still acknowledges Sydney’s perspective, Oleff noted Stanley and Dina are more “fleshed out” people while Brad remains something closer to a caricature. To Lillis, the way Sydney interacts with Stanley and Bryant’s Dina marks one the best ways the show builds on the foundation of the book. “She has all these people” – mainly Stanley and Dina – “but everything goes wrong and it feels like she has nothing there,” she said. “With the series There’s so much more to life and so much more happening. It’s less this tense feeling of being stuck.”(Photo by Netflix)Nevertheless, there is still some sense of being stuck for Sydney. She is an ill-fit at school, she may want Dina to be more than her best friend, and even the powers, awesome as they are, come from a feeling Hall felt was quite recognizable — “If people really knew what was going on inside of me, people really knew what a freak I was, then I would be deemed unlovable.”“She has no control and has no idea where she is with any of it, and that s kind of right in the middle of the whirlpool of something that could be considered a depression,” added Entwistle. And while just about every teenage feels like a freak, Sydney’s power genuinely set her apart and create a sense that she could be dangerous – a common feeling for teenagers given a very palpable reality in the show. That authenticity, both in terms of Sydney’s fears about her powers and her feelings for Dina, were important elements Lillis felt the show had to explore. “Everyone’s process is different, but it’s good to interpret that and show that. It’s what high school life is and what it’s like to grow up and find out who you are. You get to really see that in Sydney,” she said.Entwistle also felt the coming of age story and the emergence of her powers all lead to a powerful theme about adolescence.  “When you learn to take on the mantle of becoming an adult it also means taking on bad stuff and good stuff, and learning to live with it,” he said.In finding these themes, expanding the characters, and making one or two other alterations we cannot mention for the sake of spoilers, I Am Not Okay With This becomes an indie rock superhero tale with an interesting hook.“What s the superhero origin story if Professor X never shows up at your house or Hagrid never comes to take you to Hogwarts?” is how Entwistle put it.It is a question both he and Hall hope to answer in subsequent seasons. It also something the cast hope to explore even as they hope to maintain the series unique balance of fantastic powers and high school angst.I Am Not Okay With This is now streaming on Netflix.

In the first season, we were introduced to a Ramy who was very much yearning to step into his higher self, while continually being pulled into the trappings and desires of his lower one. In the finale, our hero journeyed to Egypt, looking to connect with his cultural roots. But as the saying goes, one step forward, two steps back. Just as he thought he was on the right path, a death in the family knocked Ramy off track and he ended up making a terrible decision: He fell in love with his cousin, and then he had sex with her.As you d expect, the fallout of this choice puts Ramy right back into his funk. When Ali s Sheikh enters his life, he brings a sense of guidance that will hopefully put Ramy back on the righteous path. I think a character like Sheikh Ali is an embodiment of that and I really wanted that for the show, Youssef says. I think we have a lot of people struggling with that and I really wanted to show somebody who was transformed by the faith. Transformation is really what Ramy is looking for. (Photo by Hasan Amin/Hulu)Youssef s quick to point out the many types of Muslims that exist throughout the world: African, South Asian, and Middle Eastern, to name a few. According to Youssef, having Ali stepping into the role of the Sufi Sheikh was a very American thing. Historically, Black people have been the first Muslims in this country; the first big Muslim presence and, kind of, have the longest link here, he said. And so it s interesting to have that here when you have, within other Muslim communities like Arab ones or South Asian ones, a lot of anti-Blackness. It was just this idea that someone like him would be carrying what Ramy wanted. It felt like something I was really excited to have for our audience. Demystifying the general public s perception of Muslims in America is a big goal to achieve, and Youssef s quick to admit he s not trying to create a public service announcement with his series. However, as the show continues to explore the world through his experiences, and that of the members of his family, he s hoping the story will continue to connect on a human level with viewers, no matter their race, religion, or gender.(Photo by Craig Blankenhorn/Hulu) We try not to take sides or positions, and more-so just complicate the conversation, because I think it s really hard for a comedy to be instructive or a comedy to be, you know, kind of telling people what to think or what s right, he says. Rounding out conversations that sometimes are a little too one dimensional, that really is the goal of the show. As for authenticity, Youssef wants to remind viewers that he s just one type of Muslim and while his show is working to represent the culture and religion as a whole, this story is specific to his experience. I think audiences are kind of in an unfair situation because there s so little content that speaks to anything even close to what they re going through, he says. So I think a show like mine has a lot of, you know, expectations on it. But that really comes out of scarcity, as opposed to entertainment value. I m very sympathetic to that. And so all I hope is that people can really see the humanity in these characters, see the conversations that we re trying to complicate, and that we kind of bring some more depth to things. Hopefully. Ramy season 2 premieres on Hulu on Friday, May 29, 2020.
