But it also proved their faith in series creator Jon Favreau and the contributions of Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni was rewarded. And as both reiterated throughout the presentation, they are both giant fans of Star Wars.“I was born in 1975, so I’m a product of this,” added star Pedro Pascal, who recalled meeting with Favreau and Filoni before he was cast. Describing a room filled with storyboards and illustrations of the proposed series, he said his immediate reaction was “What do you want me to do? Play that bug or that robot?” only to be overwhelmed when they said they wanted him to play the Mandalorian. Pascal mimed fainting to describe the sensation of being offered the lead role.But that was just one of the surprises unveiled during the presentation, complete with a Mandalorian sizzle reel exclusive for those inside the Celebration Stage in Chicago. Luckily, we were there and can offer you some of the things we learned about the show.1. Pascal Is the Mandalorian With No Name(Photo by Lucasfilm)Filoni and Favreau are fans of Star Wars, but they’re also found of the series antecedents in Western movies and samurai films. Maintaining a tradition from those genres, Pascal’s Mandalorian has no name. It is unclear if his identity will be revealed later, but Filoni, Favreau, and Pascal referred to him only as “The Mandalorian.” He’s a mysterious, lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy,” Pascal explained. “Some would say he has questionable moral character.”In one of the exclusive clips shown, the Mandalorian takes a meeting with Greef Carga (Carl Weathers), the leader of a bounty hunters guild in that section of space. During the meeting, the Mandalorian tries to take all of the bounties Carga has on offer, which the guild leader finds excessive. But it echoes back to the gunslingers from the Westerns Pascal said Favreau assigned him to watch as part of the preparation for the series.“He’s a badass,” Pascal added. “[Jon and Dave] have created an incredible, iconic character.”In an extended clip shown only at the Celebration Stage, fans heard the Mandalorian speak for the first time. In a detail which will thrill long-time fans, his cadence matches the one Boba Fett spoke with back in The Star Wars Holiday Special and the original versions of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Of course, that cadence is inspired from another iconic film persona. “He’s got a lot of Clint Eastwood in him,” Pascal said.2. Carl Weathers Plays a Bounty Hunter Guild Leader(Photo by Lucasfilm)For an added surprise, Favreau revealed Weathers’ involvement in the series and introduced him to the stage. After a spontaneous outpouring of love from the crowd — who started cheering for the Apollo Creed actor by that character’s name — Weather’s found himself overwhelmed.“Nothing comes close to this,” he said after the roar died down.Weather’s Greef Carga is “looking for someone to bring back a product for a client which is very valuable,” Weathers explained. “He finds the Mandalorian, and that guy gets done what needs to be done.”In the clip, Carga refers the Mandalorian to a “sensitive client” who demands face-to-face contact with the bounty hunter. Despite the tense situation, their interaction seemed friendly enough. Or at least as friendly as one can be when talking to a masked man with no name.3. Werner Herzog and Giancarlo Esposito Are Imperials(Photo by Lucasfilm)The client turns out to be the character played by Werner Herzog. The legendary director, who recently turned to acting in things like The Mandalorian, recently said he plays a “small part” as a villain, but in the clip, it turns out he represents a faction of the deposed Empire.“It was really compelling to me what happens after the celebration of the Empire falling,” Favreau explained before the clip. “The revolution was successful, but then what happens?”As it turns out, the answer is at least partially inspired from the Expanded Universe interpretation of the post-Empire era. Factions known as the Imperial Remnant continue to flex their might in sectors not as tied to the Rebellion or the emerging New Republic. In the clip, the Mandalorian finds Herzog’s character guarded by stormtroopers. The gleam may be off their white armor, but they still appear battle ready when another Imperial agent (played by Omid Abtahi) enters the room. Guns are drawn, but Herzog defused the situation.He also offers the Mandalorian a few details about his quarry; offering him a locator and the last four digits of the bounty’s gene marker. The preference is to bring the bounty in alive, but Herzog tells the Mandalorian he will accept proof of the mark’s death for a reduced fee. The other Imperial is not impressed by this change in their plan.In the subsequent sizzle reel, Herzog can be heard asking “are things better since the revolution?” Amid scenes of violence and fire (all narrated by Herzog stating his belief in the Empire), Giancarlo Esposito’s character appears. While also unnamed, his uniform also identifies him as part of the Imperial Remnant. He orders a stormtrooper to ignite his flamethrower and flush out someone from a dwelling. A subsequent shot also reveals Esposito in a TIE fighter.4. The Show Will Feel Gritty(Photo by Lucasfilm) While Favreau and Filoni kept name-checking the campy Holiday Special as an inspiration — indeed, the Mandalorian s rifle is a direct lift from the Special s Boba Fett cartoon — Filoni mentioned the show will have a gritty feel to it. This came through in the sizzle reel, which included dusty village streets, old stations covered in snow, and plenty of run-down technology abandoned and weathering.The overall look evokes the original Star Wars — right down to one shot which may or may not be the original film’s Mos Eisley cantina — which was very much the thing Favreau said he wanted to accomplish with The Mandalorian. But he added that Filoni is making him more of a fan of the Prequel aesthetic as well.5. Gina Carrano Plays Ex-Rebel Shock Trooper Cara Doone(Photo by Lucasfilm)The sizzle reel also offered the first clear look at Gina Carano’s Cara Dune.“She’s an ex-Rebel shock trooper,” Carano explained. “[She’s] a bit of a loner — which is a stretch — and [she] is having a bit of trouble reintegrating into society.”In the preview, the Mandalorian spots her in a cantina, much to his displeasure. The two end up fighting in an alley and eventually draw blasters on one another. It is unclear if this is the beginning of a partnership or a rivalry, but her Mando-inspired shoulder guards suggest there may be some sort of bond.Well, provided the Mandalorian really is what he claims. In his scene, Herzog s character infers the person under than armor may not be a true Mandalorian.6. The Mandalorian’s Ship, the Razorcrest, Is a Practical Effect(Photo by Lucasfilm)Glimpsed briefly in the clip shown early in the presentation, Favreau offered a few details about the Mandalorian’s ship, the Razorcrest. Details he said “most people won’t even know, but we knew you’d appreciate it.”The twin-engine ship will be the title character’s key vehicle, but making it was a labor of love between Favreau, Filoni, and the group at ILM when the executive producer made one request: “Can we shoot a model?”Stymied in using old-school techniques on movies like Iron Man, he was thrilled when Lucasfilm let it happen and the ILM crew became obsessed with creating the ship as a miniature. Parts were kit-bashed from other model kits, just as they did back in the 1970s, while other elements used cutting edge techniques and 3D printing. Members of the ILM team manufactures long-retired motion-control camera rigs in their garages while higher-ups like John Knoll sat in on planning meetings to bring the Razor Crest to life.That dedication to detail was one of the key things Favreau wanted to pull off with The Mandalorian. On screen, it means little throwbacks to the film series. In the extended clip, a food vendor can be seen roasting Kowakian monkey-lizard — Salacious Crumb’s species — and in the sizzle reel, a droid who may or may not be legendary bounty hunter IG-88 gets in on the action as he swivels his torso to take on attackers in a 360-degree arc of fire. Additionally, plenty of familiar aliens are realized with creature effect make-up. There s even a gonk droid hanging out with the Imperials.“We used a lot of tech from Iron Man, The Jungle Book, and even The Lion King,” Favreau said. “But Star Wars, at its core, has to feel handmade. So there are animatronics and puppetry.”“All that passion trickled down,” Carano added. “Jon would well up with tears explaining how much a scene meant [to him], and you felt like you were part of something special. Everybody in every department would be there for 17-hour days. And you wanted to be there because it was worth it. It had this magic. I always want to work with is people passionate about what they’re doing.”That sense of passion was clear from the material Favreau brought to stage. With the film series taking a pause after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian will be the key live-action Star Wars product and it looks like it will be a worthy torchbearer.The Mandalorian will launch on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.

So join us as we examine everything we know about Eternals to determine if it will contain the next Groot or, perhaps, something more mysterious.[Updated on 8/19/21]The Premise(Photo by Marvel Comics)As one of Kirby’s final projects before his he parted ways with Marvel Comics for keeps, The Eternals continues themes Kirby worked on throughout the 1970s in books like DC Comics New Gods: the origins of myths and the power of ancient beings. Debuting in 1976’s The Eternals #1, the comic book focused on a race of humans engineered by the alien Celestials to protect the Earth. Of course, things did not go as planned, and life on Earth developed along different lines. Nevertheless, the Eternals remained to protect the planet from the Deviants, Celestial experiments that also did not evolve quite as expected.The Eternals are themselves long-lived and have developed many advanced technologies; primary reasons why they stay in the shadows, let humans solve their own problems, and focus on more interstellar threats. But this philosophy was not embraced by all members of the race, and a civil war broke out that eventually led to the Eternals being able to store cosmic energy in their own bodies and use it in a variety of ways. There is also some business about a faction founding a colony on Saturn’s moon, Titan, but that couldn’t possibly matter to the film’s story, right?In the modern day, most Eternals carry on private conflicts away from the eyes of the public or act as superheroes to obscure their real intent; which makes sense for a group of Marvel characters who rarely enjoy the privilege of their own comic book. As it happens, Kirby’s version of the title ended after just two years. The title would return either as planned miniseries or short runs in the 1980s and 2000s. Neil Gaiman wrote one such miniseries miniseries in 2006.(Photo by Marvel Comics)Despite rarely enjoying the starring role, the Eternals quickly became a favorite of writers and artists who followed in Kirby’s wake. Various members of the original cast worked their way into books like Thor, and their backstory continued to deepen. Gaiman’s miniseries, for example, recast prominent Eternals like Ikaris and Thena (more on them in a moment) as millions of years old instead of the tens of thousands the Kirby original suggested. He also introduced the idea that the Eternals suffered from a collective amnesia about their origins and lived as conventional humans until circumstances forced them to remember their old lives.And though partial amnesia would explain their absence from recent battles, a teaser released in May suggests the Eternals will be in full possession of their powers and memories as the story begins. According to Marvel, the film will focus on the Eternals – who have lived on planet Earth in secret for the last 7,000 years – renewing their conflict with the Deviants sometime after the missing human population returned from the Blip. The May preview even goes so far as to mention the Eternals never interfered in human affairs until this new crisis, which means they actively chose not be part of recent events.A final trailer released in August hinted at their reasoning for standing down as the Chitauri, Thanos, and others threatened the Earth – the Celestials forbade their intervention except in cases of Deviant incursion. The preview also offered a greater understanding of the film’s take on the characters: estranged for centuries, the group must reunite to stave off “The Emergence.” The event is likened to the end of the world and somehow allows the Deviants to resume their assaults on the planet.Also, “The Emergence” is only possible because of the energy used to return all of the beings Thanos snapped away. That suggests some short-sightedness on the part of the Celestials with their non-intervention rule and, perhaps, a reason for the Eternals to go public during the course of the film. Alternatively, though, the Celestials may have wanted the Infinity Saga to occur for some obscure reason.Meet Your Eternals(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)To play these quasi-mythic characters, Marvel assembled a surprising roster of actors. Leading the pack is Gemma Chan as Sersi. Though she reportedly masquerades as a museum curator, she is really an Eternal with the ability to manipulate matter. In early discussions about the film, Feige said Sersi is the starring character, though it is unclear if this is still the case in the finished film.Angelina Jolie also appears as Thena, a warrior who uses her abilities with cosmic energy to fashion weapons. Some reports note she is in exile from the main Eternals group, so she could serve an antagonistic function even as she unites with the others against the Deviants.Richard Madden is Ikaris, a tactical genius and, back in the comics, a frequent guest star in other titles. Although Marvel is offering us a mere 7,000 years of Eternal history, we’d believe he’s millions of years old as Gaiman suggested.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Other Eternals include Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, a Bollywood star whose fame-seeking life suggests he may not be aware that he is an Eternal; Lauren Ridloff as super-fast scout Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, an inventor with a tendency to break the Eternals non-intervention edict; Haaz Sleiman as Phastos’s husband; Barry Keoghan as Druig, whose ability to manipulate minds and distance from the others suggests he may also be a possible antagonist; Lia McHugh as Sprite, an illusion-generating Eternal who only looks twelve-years-old and may be the source of any potential memory loss among the group; Don Lee as Gilgamesh, who can project an exoskeleton and whose name conjures up a very direct connection to ancient human myths; and Salma Hayek as Ajak, the leader of the Eternals, who can also speak with the Celestials, suggesting some of Kirby’s most out-there character designs may be featured in the film. At least, we hope some authentic Kirby weirdness will appear.Additionally, Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman, a human man who may or may not become Marvel Comics Black Knight over the course of the film.Behind the Eternals(Photo by Handout/Getty Images)On the filmmaking side of things, Chloé Zhao serves as director. Long before her Oscar-winning film Nomadland became the talk of Hollywood, her acclaimed sophomore film The Rider, her presentation to Marvel Studios, and her visual aesthetics reportedly wowed Feige. Indeed, the executive became the butt of jokes during the Spring of 2020 as he continued to praise Zhao’s use of natural landscapes to create both scope and intimacy without green screens or visual effects. But in the few moments we’ve seen of the film, those qualities definitely appear to be on display.On scripting duties are Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who’ve been with the project since 2018. Although the pair has few credits, Kaz has won awards for Refuge, his documentary on the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and a short film. Zhao also took a pass at the script.Other people on the crew include cinematographer Ben Davis – a five-time Marvel veteran who shot Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel before Eternals – and editors Dylan Tichenor (Zero Dark Thirty) and Craig Wood (both Guardians films and Ant-Man and the Wasp). Providing the film’s score is Game of Thrones Ramin Djawadi, who seems like a fitting choice – and not just because two actors from that series are in the film. Like Thrones, the Eternals concept contains a sense of closely-knit cultures, family politics, and an inscrutable enemy on the horizon.The Implications Of Eternals(Photo by Marvel Studios)As names like Ikaris, “Gilgamesh,” and “Sersi” imply, the notion that the Eternals have been on Earth all along will have far-reaching effects on the MCU. If the resolution of the film means they have to reveal themselves to the superhero community, then there’s the expectation for them to, at least, be on call in the future. It is also easy to imagine resentment could bubble up from their unwillingness to lend aid during the Battle of New York or the invasion of Wakanda.It is also possible Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) knew about them and specifically chose not to approach them; maybe he and Phastos had an understanding.Meanwhile, deepening the presence of their creators, the Celestials, in MCU lore could point to a threat worthy of a grand Avengers assemblage in Phase Five or Phase Six. The Guardians did face off against Kurt Russell s Ego, who identified himself as a Celestial even though that wasn t necessarily true of his character in the comics, in Vol. 2 and defeated him. But it s anyone s guess how even this group of active heroes and Eternals are supposed to confront an impossibly powerful Celestial like Ziran the Tester without the aid of a partial Celestial like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Also, looking back on the allusions to Mesopotamian and Greek mythology, establishing a superpower presence in antiquity opens up other settings for future films, namely the past beyond World War II. Imagine an MCU-set Western or something more resembling a fantasy epic in which the Eternals fight Apocalypse during his time as a pharaoh in Egypt – a very similar story already exists in the annuls of Marvel Comics history. Granted, Marvel Studios prefers its films to be contemporary, but these characters’ long lives do offer new possibilities.Of course, this is all mere speculation. Job one of Eternals is to make Sersi and the rest bankable characters, like Groot and Rocket before them. And while we’re unsure any of the them will become the smash commercial icons those characters became, we expect at least one Eternal will be a welcome sight the next time the Avengers plan a pancake breakfast or defense of the planet.Delayed Just A YearLike Black Widow before it, Eternals was planned for release in 2020 November 6, 2020 to be exact but experienced some of the sliding calendar woes both Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings faced as the pandemic significantly altered theatrical exhibition. For the moment, Eternals is set for release on November 5, almost exactly a year after its original date.Eternals is in theaters on November 5, 2021.On an Apple device? But we re way closer than before.In the last moments of season 4 finale Winner, Jimmy faced a board of his peers hoping to get his law license reinstated after a year of being blacklisted. The character was at his most vulnerable; referencing a letter Chuck wrote him before he passed away, a teary-eyed Jimmy fought back waves of grief as he expressed his love and respect for his esteemed brother. Board members, as well as Jimmy s girlfriend and fellow lawyer, Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), were moved by the emotion on display.(Photo by Nicole Wilder/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)But as much as we all (Kim, included) were taken in by Jimmy s confessional moment, the scene that came after was the mic drop of the season, giving viewers a peek at the man we ve been waiting for. Suckers! Jimmy exclaimed to Kim in the hallway. It was all a con. Slippin Jimmy struck again.He got what he wanted, but this reinstatement came as sort of a rebirth. Jimmy decided that moving forward, he would embrace his corner-cutting, con-man skills, and practice law under a new name: Saul Goodman. It s all good, man, he tells Kim as he heads to fill out the appropriate papers. Kim s concerned look mirrored all of our faces as the episode ended. Kim is never mentioned or seen in Breaking Bad, leading us to wonder if this remaining moral anchor will stick with Saul as the story continues. The likelihood of that doesn t feel good. Not at all.Co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have weaved together another epic morality play with this series. In its first four seasons, Better Call Saul has given heart to even the vilest characters, leaving room for the audience to sometimes even root for the bad guy. We ve been waiting a year-and-a-half for the show to return. Does the premiere episode deliver on the hype?Here’s what critics are saying about Better Call Saul season 5:BOB ODENKIRK BRINGS HIS A-GAME AS JIMMY AND SAULOdenkirk, as always, continues to find new things to explore about this character he’s now been playing for 11 years, with a notable addition to his repertoire in these early episodes: We’ve seen this man angry, scared, happy, and heartbroken—but there’s a new potential in him to be legitimately scary, which Odenkirk plays here with a sort of raw quiet that brings with it a new kind of terror.—Liz Shannon Miller, Paste MagazineGould and Gilligan have turned Better Call Saul into a gripping meditation on character and destiny, and in Odenkirk they’ve found a leading man very nearly as compelling and complex as Bryan Cranston. Part of the problem is that Mike as depicted in Saul has always felt a lot closer to his Breaking Bad self than Jimmy, so the attempt to craft a downward spiral of his own feels a little contrived.—Gabriel Bergmoseralt, Den Of GeekThe drug lord duel has a new energy thanks to Lalo (Tony Dalton), yet another nephew of Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis). Lalo is the wild card Saul needed, a master criminal not on rails toward an expected ending. Dalton imbues his malevolent operator with charming swagger, so that Lalo seems to be gleefully trolling his own show.—Darren Franich, EWKIM WEXLER IS STILL THE ONE TO WATCH(Photo by Warrick Page/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)Kim remains the most fascinating character of the series. Her proximity to Jimmy means she’s forced to go through his insane ups and downs right alongside him, and that creates a dilemma: How do you have Kim stick with Jimmy without having her seem like a complete push-over? It’s to the credit of the show’s writers, and Seehorn’s consistently brilliant performance, that Kim never seems like a sucker. Is she being sucked? Oh, of course she is. HBO s Lovecraft Country, based on Matt Ruff s 2016 novel of the same name, follows army vet Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) and childhood friend Leti Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) as they travel the tumultuous roads of 1950s Jim Crow America in search of Atticus missing father — with the added mystery that his family s birthright may exist at the end of the line.Hailing from producing power trio Misha Green (Underground), J.J. Abrams (Lost), and Jordan Peele (Get Out), the series, which premieres to HBO on August 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, once again finds the network delving into genre territory to explore the demons of America s racist past while parading a cavalcade of classic horror and science fiction tropes before the viewer. There s a sequence of Leti at church that incorporates the sound from this 2017 Nike campaign that champions equality for the LGBTQ community. Audio from different eras helps link the present and past. —Patricia Puentes, CNET “Lovecraft Country” has a sense of timeliness as well. When police arrive at the scene of a disturbance, the Black crowd adopts a “hands up, don’t shoot” posture; taken into custody, Letitia is subjected to the sort of bruising police van ride that led to the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore in 2015. —Robert Lloyd, Los Angeles Times Sometimes, the soundtrack is era-specific, but get used to the likes of Cardi B or Frank Ocean or The Jeffersons theme accompanying the action — or, in a bold break from cinematic tradition, for some montages to be accompanied not by songs, but by monologues, such as an excerpt from James Baldwin’s famous 1965 debate about racism with conservative pundit William F. Buckley. —Alan Sepinwall, Rolling StoneEven with a soundtrack featuring gospel, jazz, rap, pop, poetry and metal-everything from Shirley Caesar, Etta James, and Marilyn Manson to Cardi B, Gil Scott-Heron, and Leon Bridges, Lovecraft Country manages to holistically comprise feelings of hope, love, despair, and fear into a fascinating story. Antrum purports to be a documentary about a lost 1970s film that was only screened twice, because everyone who watches it dies. The movie opens with an 8-minute documentary detailing the curse around the film, then shows you the “film” itself, which is about two young kids who attempt to dig a hole to Hell to save their recently deceased dog. The filmmakers do their best to make the movie-within-a-movie look authentically 70s to help sell the whole façade. The fact that Antrum’s release was preceded by rumors and word of mouth among hardcore horror fans (much like the way the controversial 2011 A Serbian Film grew a reputation well before it was ever screened publicly) lent the movie an air of real mystery. Some eager horror buffs even tried to track the “original” Antrum down, believing it to be real.Plausibility Score: 2 out of 5Antrum is a nice try, but in the age of advanced search engines, it’s hard to fully convince people that a film with a supposed body count of 60 could truly have been “lost.”Snuff (1976) The concept of a “snuff” film – a movie depicting an actual murder – basically started in 1971 when Ed Sanders, the author of a book about the Manson Family, asserted that Charles Manson and his followers had filmed their killing spree (no footage was ever found). Then, just a few years later in 1976, husband-and-wife directors Michael and Roberta Findlay made a cheap exploitation film called Slaughter about an actress and her director who are murdered by a Manson Family-esque clan in South America. Grindhouse film distributor Allan Shackleton bought the film, changed the title to Snuff, and released it under the pretense that it depicted the real murder of the main actress (the tagline was “Filmed in South America…Where Life is Cheap!”). This kickstarted an obsession with snuff films, although none have ever been conclusively unearthed.Plausibility Score: 4 out of 5The Manson Family connection and the fact that people still believe in the existence of snuff films even today and really sell this one.Poltergeist (1982) 86%Perhaps the most famous “cursed” movie of all time, the original 1982 Poltergeist, about a suburban family terrorized by a supernatural presence, climaxed with a scene in which the mom (JoBeth Williams) is dragged into a partially dug-out pool and is surrounded by skeletons – the reveal being that the housing development in which they live was unscrupulously built on top of a graveyard. The rumor was that the film crew had not only used real skeletons, but had desecrated graves themselves to get them. Mysterious and untimely deaths of some of the actors in the trilogy, including young Heather O’Rourke (who played the abducted little girl Carol Anne), who died at the age of 12 due to a congenital intestinal issue, and Dominique Dunne (who played oldest sibling Dana), who was murdered by a jealous boyfriend at the age of 22, led to the urban legend that the ghosts of the unwitting skeletal “co-stars” had cursed the films and everyone who worked on them. It’s flimsy, because clearly major players like Williams, Craig T. Nelson, director Tobe Hooper, and producer Steven Spielberg walked away unscathed.Plausibility Score: 1 out of 5Although it’s the movie everyone cites when talking about curses, a lot of the supposed connections are pretty thin. Plus, more of the actors and crew survived unhurt than didn’t, and a lot of the “deaths” beyond the two young leads were simply age and explainable illness.The Blair Witch Project (1999) 86%Horror is a great way for young talents to break into the business because, often, what you don’t see is scarier than what you do, so it’s a godsend for indie filmmakers with more creativity than budget. The Blair Witch Project came about at exactly the right time – exploiting the still nascent “world wide web,” it managed to cultivate its own urban legend of supposedly lost cam footage that was recovered after a group of young filmmakers went missing. The conceit of it being filmed on the fly covered over the fact that you don’t really see much of anything, and the clever use of sound effects and the overall naturalistic performances by the lead actors made you think, just for a second, that maybe this was the real deal. Of course, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 came out around a year later to confirm that, yes, this was indeed just a cheesy horror franchise at its core.Plausibility Score: 3 out of 5It may have lost some luster since, but at the time? It really had people convinced. And the execution – from the early websites to the film itself – was nearly perfect.The Omen (1976) 86%Strap in for this one: Producer Harvey Bernhard claims that the initial idea for the seminal horror classic The Omen came from an advertising exec named Bob Munger. Munger suggested that a movie about the Antichrist would be cool, but that no one should actually make it because “the devil was at work and he didn’t want that film made.” He may have been right. Just a month before filming was to start, lead actor Gregory Peck’s son committed suicide. As he flew to the set, Peck’s plane was struck by lightning, and then executive producer Marc Neufeld’s plane was also struck by lightning on his way to the location. The hotel Neufeld and his wife were staying in then got bombed by the Irish Republican Army. The crew hired a small plane to do some aerial photography, but it was given to another client at the last minute; that plane crashed on takeoff and killed everyone on board. Filming a zoo sequence, the young boy playing the demonic Damien apparently upset the baboons so much they started freaking out, so an animal wrangler was called in to help; the next day, he was mauled by a tiger and killed. But perhaps the most chilling result of this “curse” was what happened to special effects supervisor John Richardson. One of his big FX sequences in The Omen was one in which a character is decapitated by a sheet of glass. While working on his next movie in the Netherlands, Richardson and his assistant were involved in a car accident, and his assistant was you guessed it decapitated. Legend has it the accident occurred near a street sign that read “Ommen, 66.6 km.” But it’s all coincidence, right?Plausibility Score: 4 out of 5It’s hard to write all of this off as coincidence. Even when people discount some of it – like the existence of the Dutch street sign – there’s a lot more that’s been verified.Cannibal Holocaust (1980) 65%(Photo by ©F.D. Cinematografica courtesy Everett Collection)Not long after Snuff, another film came under fire for allegedly depicting actual murders – and it was an early example of “found footage” horror, to boot. This Italian cult movie was built around the idea that it was footage discovered after an American film crew disappeared in the Amazon rainforest and were killed and eaten by indigenous cannibals. The gore was so intense and realistic that a few days after the movie’s premiere, Italian authorities confiscated the film, director Ruggero Deodato was charged with obscenity, and he was eventually slapped with a murder charge when it was suggested Cannibal Holocaust was, in fact, a snuff film. Although it was later proven that none of the actors were killed or harmed, the film does depict scenes of intense animal cruelty that were real. Fun fact: the fake documentary the crew was working on was called The Green Inferno, which would be the title adopted by director Eli Roth for his 2013 homage to Cannibal Holocaust.Plausibility Score: 3 out of 5The rough, grimy cheapness of the film and the addition of actual animal butchery make this feel almost like the real deal.The Crow (1994) 83%What’s unique about the “curse” of The Crow is that it isn’t so much about the film as it is an extension of a curse that is believed to have haunted martial arts icon Bruce Lee and his family for generations. Of course, the 1994 horror-tinged comic book adaptation is infamous due to the tragic death of star Brandon Lee, Bruce s son, who died after a prop gun misfired and a projectile struck him. The film was hampered by setbacks and accidents – the set was destroyed numerous times, most notably by a hurricane that struck its North Carolina filming location – but in general, the problems seem to have been caused mostly by the fact that it was low budget and behind schedule, and corners were cut a little too recklessly. Some even claim that the Chinese mafia assassinated Bruce and Brandon, which is eerie when you think about the fact that Bruce Lee’s last film, Game of Death, seems to predict this. In that movie, Bruce’s character is a martial arts actor who is shot by an assassin posing as one of the stunt crew. Also, the biopic Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story anthropomorphizes the supposed family curse as a physical demon that haunts Lee his whole life, and at one point in the film, the demon goes after a young Brandon. Dragon was released in 1993 – a year before The Crow.Plausibility Score: 2 out of 5The idea of a Lee Family Curse is compelling, and it fits in with the whole mystical aura surrounding Bruce. But dig deeper into the on-set events of The Crow, and it all appears to be more a case of negligence and unprofessionalism than a sinister hex.The Exorcist (1973) 83%If the Devil really does exist, he seems to spend an awful lot of time on film sets. Before The Omen tempted fate with each shooting day, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist experienced its own unnerving incidents. Telling the story of two priests battling a demonic presence that has taken hold of a young girl named Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair), the film is an undisputed classic of the horror genre, and some of that may have to do with the notion that the film itself was actually possessed. Things got off to a rocky start when the MacNeil family home set – where much of the action takes place – was destroyed by fire. The only room that was untouched by the blaze…was Regan’s. In addition, almost all of the actors suffered injuries during the filming, and televangelist Billy Graham even claimed that “there is a power of evil in that film, in the fabric of the film itself” and suggested that simply projecting it was like opening a door for demons. The movie held its premiere in Rome, during a violent thunderstorm. One attendee even passed out and broke her jaw, later attempting to sue the production because she blamed subliminal messages for her tumble.Plausibility Score: 3 out of 5Some of the spookiness experienced on set and at early screenings was likely psychosomatic, but the movie still carries a heavy creep factor regardless.Rosemary's Baby (1968) 96%Why not complete Satan’s own personal trilogy with a supposedly cursed movie that pre-dates both The Omen and The Exorcist? Rosemary’s Baby is rightly credited with redefining the horror genre by taking it away from the campy cobwebs and castles of the old Vincent Price days and legitimizing it as a “real” grown-up art form. Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes star in the story of a young mother-to-be who moves into a New York apartment building that also happens to house a Satanic cult. Producer William Castle – who was infamous in the 1950s and 1960s for promoting all sorts of gimmicks like floating skeletons and rumbling theater seats in an effort to sell the “reality” of his horror movies – believed that real witches had cursed the set. The film’s composer suffered a nasty fall shortly after the movie wrapped and died after being comatose for several days. Castle himself fell ill with painful gallstones that required surgery. And, of course, director Roman Polanski’s wife at the time, actress Sharon Tate, and their unborn child would fall victim to the Manson Family a year after the film’s release.Plausibility Score: 1 out of 5It’s easy to think of anything Satan-related as tempting fate when it comes to curses or bad mojo, but most of these incidents seem loosely connected at best.Faces of Death (1978) 25%Just as The Blair Witch Project came along at the perfect time to take advantage of early internet, the legend of Faces of Death is largely a product of the early 1980s VHS boom. Before Blockbuster, video stores were small (often seedy) mom-and-pop stores, and Faces of Death was one of those creepy little oddities you’d find on one of the dust-covered shelves. Allegedly depicting “real” deaths, it served as a badge of honor for anyone who was actually able to get ahold of a copy and watch it. Although the film does contain some real footage – like newsreel clips from an accident where you can see paramedics cleaning up the remains of a cyclist who had been struck and killed by a truck – it was almost entirely faked by writer and director John Alan Schwartz. Yes, even the infamous scene where a table full of diners appear to kill a trapped monkey and then eat its brains.Plausibility Score: 1 out of 5If you don’t catch on immediately when you’re introduced to the movie’s “medical professional” host, “Francis B. Gross,” you’ll catch on during sequences like the “real” shark attack that somehow has footage from the shark’s POV as it eats a diver. Did it get a cinematography credit?Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) 58%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The film version of the classic horror and sci-fi television series let four different directors adapt a classic episode: “Kick the Can” by Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark), “It’s a Good Life” by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Innerspace), “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” by George Miller (The Road Warrior, Mad Max: Fury Road), and “Time Out” by John Landis (Trading Places, Animal House). Although some claim the movie is cursed, it’s really just that there’s a sense of morbidity around it because veteran actor Vic Morrow (father of Jennifer Jason Leigh) and two young actors playing Vietnamese children were killed in an on-set accident during Landis’ segment when a helicopter that was part of a sequence recreating the Vietnam War crash-landed on them. None of the other directors experienced any bizarre or unexplained incidents, and all continued to have successful careers. (Photo by Newspix/Getty Images)Created by artist Hideshi Hino based on his own manga series, the Guinea Pig movies feature the same kind of faux documentary feel as something like Faces of Death or Cannibal Holocaust, and they re legendary among hardcore horror fans. Without any real plot to speak of beyond “psycho kidnaps women and dismembers them in gruesome fashion while dressed as a samurai,” the movies do feel less like a story and more like some forbidden home video. That said, two incidents lend it a particular air of menace. One is that a copy of Flower of Flesh and Blood was sent to the FBI by Charlie Sheen – yes, Charlie Sheen – because he was convinced it was an actual snuff film (it was not, and all of the deaths and butchery were faked). The other is that a copy of the film was found in the home of a man named Tsutomu Miyazaki, a cannibalistic serial killer known as the Otaku Murderer who was behind the kidnapping and murder of four young girls between 1988 and 1989 in Japan. The film was believed to have inspired him.Plausibility Score: 3 out of 5All Hino had to do was not put a title card over the opening “stalking” sequence and it might have worked. The scene really looks and feels like something a creep would record as he follows women down the street. But no real serial killer goes into AfterEffects and adds cool titles and music cues to their murder footage. A comedy based on a 1963 satirical novel called The Incomparable Atuk by Canadian author Mordecai Richler, the story is about an Inuit poet who travels to Toronto and has a series of fish-out-of-water experiences in the big city (the film version Americanized it by making Atuk a native of Alaska who travels to New York). Sounds pretty basic, right? It might well be, if the movie didn’t seem to kill every actor associated with the lead role. The curse of Atuk is particularly weird because the novel itself isn’t about anything sinister or paranormal. The first man up for the role was comedy legend John Belushi; after his untimely death from a drug overdose, the producers approached comedian Sam Kinison… who then died in a drunk driving accident. So they decided to offer the part to John Candy, who would die from a heart attack a few months after getting the script. Undaunted, the part was then dangled in front of another SNL vet – Chris Farley. He, too, would succumb to a drug overdose. Even stranger, Farley allegedly gave a copy of the script to a friend who he thought might also be interested in the role, namely fellow SNL alum Phil Hartman. Although the consequences of COVID-19 made New York Comic Con cancel its usual convention experience, ReedPOP, the organization behind the annual celebration of geek chic, still managed to corral some of its energy with NYCC Metaverse. The four-day event featured plenty of video panels on NYCC’s YouTube channel, a handful of exclusive merchandise for those who go to cons to shop, and even an attempt at a virtual dealer’s room that may give you some idea of the madness involved in navigating a real one.That said, the event was still muted in comparison to a full-fledged weekend at New York’s Javits Center. The film industry s continuing need to push back release dates means no high-profile movies to promote and even the comics industry itself is preparing for a lonelier, digital future. Lucky for us, television still offers a lot to NYCC – in fact, the 2019 convention felt like the show for TV. And even with fewer events, the virtual 2020 show still felt like a huge showcase for broadcast networks, streaming services, and cable outlets.Here’s a rundown of the big reveals and updates TV shows offered to fans over the course of NYCC the past few days.Star Trek Universe Panel Reveals Captain (?) Kathryn Janeway Set to ReturnWith Star Trek: Lower Decks ending its first season and Star Trek: Discovery about to begin its third, the Star Trek Universe panel dedicated its big news to the return of a welcome friend: Kate Mulgrew and her Star Trek: Voyager character Kathryn Janeway. Mulgrew will once again play the part in Star Trek: Prodigy, an animated series being developed for Nickelodeon. It will focus on a group of teenagers who commandeer a decommissioned starship. And from Mulgrew’s comments, it seems Janeway will be mentoring the young starfarers in some way. “How thrilling to be able to introduce these young minds to an idea that has elevated the world for decades,” she said. The announcement, of course, sent Trek fans into a tizzy as they debated Janeway’s role and even her rank – last time we saw her in Star Trek: Nemesis, she was an admiral, but the Prodigy press release referred to her as “captain.” Her real position on the show will, no doubt, spark more debate.On the other shows, Discovery is preparing to send viewers the far-flung future of 3187 and the Lower Decks gang teased Boimler’s (Jack Quaid) new position on the Titan will not change in the second season. Well, at least not at first. Sadly, overall Star Trek creative director Alex Kurtzman offered no updates on Star Trek: Picard’s second season or the in-development Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but he did tell one outlet he has enough ideas to keep Discovery on the air until 2027.Star Trek: Discovery returns this week.Doctor Who Set to Go Back Into Production, Plus New Details on this Year s Holiday Special COVID-19 even kept The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) sheltering in place this year, but the Doctor Who star was thrilled to mention cast and crew are preparing to go back into production on Season 13 soon. In fact, you can hear someone in the Zoom call say they may be back to work in the next couple of weeks.”The program is no stranger to long production breaks – it took nearly 15 years off, after all – but there will be at least one episode of Doctor Who in 2020: the holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks.” Whittaker teased The Doctor will be in an intergalactic prison for a long time and “has no idea what’s happening on Earth.” The TARDIS Team (or “fam”), meanwhile, try to get on with their lives. Yaz (Mandip Gill) has the hardest time re-acclimating to the slower pace of Sheffield, but any sort of domestic tidings are obliterated when a Dalek comes to town. Somehow, Yaz, Ryan (Tosin Cole), and Graham (Bradley Walsh) have to deal with the genocidal alien without The Doctor.“Talk about being thrown in the deep end,” Walsh said of their predicament.The group offered two preview photos of the special, but scheduling for the episode has not been finalized.Amazon Gives First Look at Invincible, Starring Steven YeunAfter what seems like an eternity, Amazon and co-creator Robert Kirkman finally unveiled footage from the upcoming animated adaptation of Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible. The series stars The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun as the son of an alien superhero. At age 16, his powers finally manifest and he must learn the family trade. That seemingly innocent brief hides the mature themes and extreme violence the comic and the series will explore. Beyond a cast which includes Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, and more, Kirkman announced Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Michael Dorn will lend his voice to Battle Beast – a former planetary guardian with an addiction to combat.The show is expected to premiere sometime next year.The Expanse Promises Most Epic Season Yet Season 5 of Amazon’s beloved science-fiction series The Expanse will be its most epic and the most personal season,” according to showrunner Naren Shankar. Centering on the notion that “you reap what you sow,” seeds of revolution and interpersonal conflict planted as far back as Season 1 will finally bear fruit. “It’s taking the people we’ve fallen in love with over the last four years and peeling back the layers,” he added. The story will also ask if they can “survive the most high-pressure situations they’ve ever been through” with their principles intact.Like Amazon’s superhero hit The Boys, The Expanse will offer the first three episodes of Season 5 on December 16 with the subsequent episodes releasing on a weekly basis.Snowpiercer Shares First Look At Season 2, Shares Details on Sean Bean s New CharacterSnowpiercer came to NYCC with a teaser for their upcoming season and a discussion of new characters Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) and Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard). Both have key connections to Jennifer Connelly’s Melanie Cavill and it sounds like life will not be easy for her as Wilford’s train, Big Alice, barrels toward Snowpiercer. It also means profound troubles for Layton (Daveed Diggs) and his fledgling democracy aboard the titular locomotive. Showrunner Graeme Manson teased Big Alice’s society as something decidedly more authoritarian and the preview suggests Wilford and Layton are on a collision course all their own.Season 2 debuts on January 25The Watch Set to Take Some Liberties in Adapting Terry Pratchett s City Watch NovelsThe most important takeaway from BBC America’s panel for the upcoming series The Watch: Wendell Pierce is now part of the very small fraternity to voice author Terry Pratchett’s version of Death! Matt Berry will also appear as a talking sword called Wayne in the punk rock fantasy inspired by Pratchett’s City Watch novels (themselves set within the writer’s larger Discworld).Executive producers Richard Stokes and Simon Allen were quick to admit the show takes some liberties with Pratchett’s world and characters – nary a plate of armor to be found anywhere! – but it still sets out to honor the sarcastic and anarchic worlds Pratchett created, right down to the Watch being hamstrung by the city’s quasi-legal organized crime guilds. His books are full of rich characters and wonderful environments, Stokes said.Allen, who also serves as showrunner, went one step further in his admiration of Pratchett, telling viewers, Go read the books. They will change your life! The series features characters like Constable Carrot (Adam Hugill), a six-foot, broad-shouldered man who grew up believing he was a dwarf; an actual dwarf who moved to the city to escape the race s rigid unary gender system and uses “queer magic a conflicted werewolf with concerns about Carrot’s devotion to the Watch; and Watch captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), a “dissolute” alcoholic according to the actor. Other characters include a noble turned vigilante with a pet dragon, a city ruler who “uses sarcasm more than anything else,” and recurring antagonist Karcer Dun (Sam Adewunmi), who the producers said may prove to be less of a villain as time goes on.The Watch comes to BBC America in January 3rd.The Walking Dead Panel Teases Crossovers and a Whole New Element to Its UniverseThe Walking Dead might be ending (eventually), but the zombie universe shambles on with two additional series on the air right now and plans for a further spin-off and anthology series in development – then, of course, there s that feature film with original star Andrew Lincoln on the way. It was so much content, AMC had to split its NYCC Walking Dead panels across two days. On the first day, a Showrunners Summit saw TWD Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple refer to a “far-flung story” which may see characters from the newest series, The Walking Dead: The World Beyond meeting up with favorites from Fear the Walking Dead or the original series. Considering World Beyond s focus on CRM, its story and Rick s (Lincoln) could intersect.Meanwhile, Fear will introduce a new sort of bounty hunter who specializes in locating people even if they ve become Walkers. Also, Morgan s (Lennie James) weird red eyes (as glimpsed in a clip shown during the panel) will be explored throughout the season as his new situation will lead to a whole new element of the Walking Dead universe.Back on the original Walking Dead, the Commonwealth and Maggie s (Lauren Cohan) reaction to Negan s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) new place in the community will become the focus of the bonus Season 10 episodes currently in production. The 24-episode final season will occur sometime afterward, proving there is still plenty of life to The Walking Dead.Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond are currently airing on AMC.Syfy s Resident Alien Reveals First 10 MinutesSyfy brought the first 10 minutes of its new series Resident Alien to NYCC. Based on the Dark Horse comics by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, the show stars Alan Tudyk as an extraterrestrial on a “diabolical” mission who must disguise himself as a country doctor in a Colorado backwater when his ship crashes. According to showrunner Chris Sheridan, “he’s getting to know what it’s like to be human.” That exposure to humans is an element straight from the comic, although his drive to recover a lost tool to complete his mission is a new concept from Sheridan. Will becoming Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle alter his sense of duty? We’ll find out next year.Resident Alien debuts on Syfy in January.American Gods Adds New Characters As It Moves LakesideArmed with a trailer, American Gods confirmed it is finally making its way to the Lakeside portion of author Neil Gaiman’s book. Star Ricky Whittle said it was a “comfort” to know where the story is going – especially as Lakeside gives his character, Shadow Moon, a whole new status quo while he ponders the revelation about his father. Gaiman referred to Lakeside as a “little Twin Peaks-y story of its own.” Nevertheless, new showrunner Chuck Eglee forced Gaiman to consider what the other characters are doing while Shadow soul-searches and the stories they developed as a consequence will take the material in new directions.Besides introducing a clearer motivation for the new gods via Bruce Langley’s Technical Boy, the series will introduce a brand-new character, Cordelia, to the mix. Played by Ashley Reyes, Gaiman called the character, who takes Shadow’s place at Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) side, an “astonishing” addition.“For a human, she knows what she’s doing,” Reyes said of Cordelia, adding she “brings the humanity” out of the old god. Having no family of her own, she clings to him quickly. It may lead to some initial conflict with Shadow when they meet, but they have quite a strong bond” as the season wears on.And though it sounds like the characters will spend a lot of time apart, the trailer suggests a reunion between Shadow and Wednesday is set for sooner rather than later.American Gods returns in early 2021.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Will Be Unlike Any Other Marvel Series We ve Seen Offering a few clips during their NYCC appearance, the cast and producer of Hulu’s upcoming M.O.D.O.K. series unveiled a glimpse into the home life of Marvel’s Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing. Patton Oswalt, who also serves as a producer, voices the beleaguered Marvel supervillain. Forced to sell his company to a competitor, he’s now a workaday Joe facing a destiny he no longer controls and a wife, Jodie (Aimee Garcia), whose home business is now more successful than he is. Then there’s his “queen bee” daughter Melissa (Melissa Fumero) – or M.E.L.I.S.S.A. depending on who you talk to – who wants to follow in M.O.D.O.K.’s footsteps, and his super-happy son Lou (Ben Schwartz), whose interests in magic and Judaism set him apart from the rest of the family.Realized by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios – the crew behind Robot Chicken – using stop-motion animation, M.O.D.O.K. looks like no other Marvel series. Indeed, it won’t be like any other Marvel series as it is one of the handful of idiosyncratic projects Hulu greenlit before Marvel Studios took over all of Marvel Entertainment’s creative endeavors.M.O.D.O.K. is coming soon to Hulu.Helstrom Shows Off First 10 Minutes, Future Remains Uncertain One of the other final Marvel Television projects for Hulu, Helstrom, screened the first 10 minutes of its first episode, in which Dr. Hastings (June Carryl) faces another tough night at the asylum and Daimon (Tom Austen) discovers his exorcism for the evening is nothing of the sort.Somewhere between family drama and horror TV show, Helstrom shares that “like no other Marvel show” vibe with M.O.D.O.K. And like that animated program, its future is unknown.Helstrom debuts this week.Shadow and Bone Reveals Musical Theme, Promises Ocean s 11 and Game of Thrones HybridAuthor Leigh Bardugo and executive producer Eric Heisserer offered a genuinely odd preview of the Grishaverse series Shadow and Bone. Thanks to COVID-19 and the lead-time needed to complete special effects, the pair offered no trailer. But they did convince Netflix to let them preview composer Joseph Trapanese’s “Grisha theme.” Heisserer described the series as “Ocean’s 11 in a Dickensian/Game of Thrones world” and promised he is trying hard to avoid putting the VFX crew into a grueling crunch period. Consequently, it may still take some time for any footage from the show – which stars Kit Young, Jessie Mei Li, and Ben Barnes as The Darkling – to materialize.Netflix Charmer Hilda Gets Epic and Introduces A New AntagonistOne of the most charming comic book adaptations on a streaming service is set to make its Netflix return this December. It follows Hilda (Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey), a young girl who moves from the wilds to the relative metropolis of Trollburg. Her spirit of adventure never wavers, and in a world filled with monsters and secrets, that tenacity is a strength and a weakness. So much so, in fact, Ramsey revealed a song she wrote about Hilda’s inability to learn from her mistakes will be featured during the end credits of a Season 2 episode.Comic book creator Luke Pearson and head writer Stephanie Simpson teased the show will become more epic with the arrival of a genuine antagonist for Hilda – the chief of Trollburg’s safety patrol – and a further exploration of the city’s stranger quarters, like an old mill and a rumored witch’s tower which both moves from location to location and descends into the ground instead of building into the sky.Director Andy Coyle called Pearson and Simpson’s plans “big ‘scope’ ideas, especially for a TV show.” Although he was quick to add the biggest challenge of Hilda, the more subtle emotions of abstracted cartoon characters, remains the same. “It sounds counter-intuitive, but that’s way harder to pull off than a hoard of giant monsters in a kinetic set-piece.”Hilda returns to Netflix in December.Stargirl Will Face Off Against Eclipso In Season 2 (Which Is Still A Long Ways Off)Make no mistake, Stargirl’s second season is a long way off. Officially slated for The CW’s nebulous 2021 midseason, executive producer Geoff Johns told his cast during their NYCC session that the writers are in the midst of putting Episode 4 together. Nonetheless, they convinced him to offer some answers about the marathon of teases included at the end of Season 1. The major villain will be Eclipso, a creature of darkness who killed both Yolanda Montez and Beth Chapel in the pages of his own short-lived DC comic book. Both actors Yvette Monreal and Anjelika Washington hope to avoid their counterparts fate. Johns added Eclipso is a “scarier” threat than the Injustice Society and it will be quite a journey for Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) and the Justice Society of America to defeat him.Though once a member of the ISA, it is unclear if The Shade – another character teased at the end of Season 1 – will be a friend or foe. Johns was quick to credit fellow series producer James Robinson with making the character compelling in his 1990s Starman series. In Robinson’s book, the character merely dabbled in villainy as it suited his own purposes and it seems he may do the same here.The biggest of the teases was, of course, the revelation that Starman (Joel McHale) is still alive. Johns said his reason for showing up now will become clearer by the end of Season 2’s first episode. He also mentioned the other objects Stargirl stole from the old JSA headquarters will find new owners while Yolanda (Monreal) comes to grips with killing someone.Stargirl returns sometime in 2021.Pennyworth Sets December Premiere for Season 2Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed Pennyworth’s second season, it is still making a 2020 debut. Set for a December 13 premiere on Epix, the program will air four episodes into the early part of January before taking a pause to complete the remaining six episodes. It sounds like it will be worth the wait.Show creator Bruno Heller and stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, and Paloma Faith offered NYCC viewers a brief preview of events. Set one year after the conclusion of Season 1, the war everyone worked to prevent has broken out and Thomas Wayne (Aldridge) is back in London looking after the CIA’s interests. Martha (Emma Paetz) is ready to fight for order, but Alfred (Bannon) wants nothing more than to earn enough money to move to the United States. Confusing matters, though, is Martha’s pregnancy. Though the child is presumably Thomas’s son, Aldridge and Bannon talked over each other to suggest things may not be so clear cut. Further complicating the issue: Thomas is engaged to a fine woman back in the States, although Heller characterized her as a part of the “old world” Thomas wants to escape. He event went to far as to call her a “throwaway gag.”Perhaps more solid are the new additions to the cast: Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox and Jessica de Gouw as Melanie Troy. The former is a well-established member of the Batman supporting cast, although he will be “working for the bad guys” at the start, according to Heller. Troy, meanwhile, is the wife of Alfred’s wartime commanding officer. Nonetheless, they will have an “immediate connection.”Bet’s (Faith) loyalty to Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng) will be rewarded with a position in his new regime.
