Originally intended for release by Warner Bros. in 1972, director Alan Elliott s film was long delayed as he spent time trying to find lost footage and fend off legal challenges from Franklin. Though never publicly stated, Elliott maintains the soul singer s suit and objections were just a negotiating tactic. After the singer s death, her estate reached an agreement with Elliott and Amazing Grace was cleared to premiere in 2018. A Democrat has not won a statewide election in Texas for over 25 years, but with a millennial-friendly social media strategy and old-fashioned grassroots campaigning Texas Congressman Beto O Rourke made a serious run against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz. Running With Beto captures the drama of the campaign.Critics Consensus: Candid and compelling, Running with Beto is an illuminating exploration of an up-and-coming politician and the changing political landscape around him.Where to watch it: Watch on HBO or HBONow.In theaters: Pavarotti (2019) 87%What it is: In the age  ofInstagram celebs it s hard to believe that at one time – for several decades in fact – one of the biggest stars in the world was an opera singer. Luciano Pavarotti transcended the opera singer stereotype to become a bona fide A-list celebrity and live a fascinating life. Handled by a rock-and-roll manager, Pavarotti lived the life of a hard-rock frontman and documented much of what happened. Director Ron Howard was given access to the late singer s home movies and – for the first time – given permission to interview Pavarotti s wives, children, and closest friends.Critics Consensus: Pavarotti pays entertaining tribute to a towering cultural figure with a documentary whose evident affection for its subject proves contagious.Where to watch it: Currently in limited theatrical release.In theaters: The Biggest Little Farm (2018) 91% What it is: When a noise complaint about their dog got them evicted them from their apartments, filmmaker John Chester and his chef wife Molly Chester bet it all on The Farm. The revolutionary organic farm they created is actually a return to noncommercial farming techniques, and the trials and tribulations of achieving it are the focus of this documentary, which spans the course of seven years. A perfect watch if you re looking for inspiration for your own veggie patch.Critics Consensus: Uplifting, educational, and entertaining, The Biggest Little Farm is an environmental advocacy documentary with a satisfying side dish of hope for the future.Where to watch it: Currently in limited theatrical release.Coming soon: Maiden (2018) 98% What it is: The tale of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook turned skipper for the first all-female crew to sail around the world, is one so incredible it sounds like a work of fiction. In truth, tired of being dismissed and passed over because of her gender, Edwards took on the male-dominated sailing competition Whitbread Round the World with her historic team entry. Following the formation of the crew and every battle they fought just to compete, this is one of the most rousing feelgood stories of the summer.Where to watch it: In limited release June 28.Stream it: The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019) 79% What it is: Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced former CEO and founder of blood-testing startup Theranos, is another one of those figures destined to inspire hours of entertainment. She s the subject of several books, countless articles, and an upcoming feature film with Jennifer Lawrence attached, and The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley is the latest to feature the poster child for everything wrong with the tech industry and icon idolatry. Chronicled by Going Clear documentarian Alex Gibney, Stanford dropout Holmes was obsessed with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and molded herself in his image, crafting a house-of-cards empire built largely on hero worship and aggressive PR without having ever achieved actual success.Critics Consensus: Alex Gibney s The Inventor declines to outright condemn the actions by Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, but instead provides a comprehensive overview of the scandal that allows viewers to mull over its implications towards the broader Silicon ValleyWhere to watch it: Watch on HBO or HBONow.Coming Soon: Love, Antosha (2019) 97% What it is: Actor Anton Yelchin was an artist that defied categorization. The documentary gives us a peek inside the enigmatic actor s life and his tragic death at the age 27. Editor Turned director Garret Price conducted interviews with Yelchin s family and friends, including Chris Pine, JJ Abrams, Nicolas Cage, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Simon Pegg.Where to watch it: In limited theaters August 2.Coming Soon: Hail Satan? (2019) 96% What it is: Satanism takes center stage in the hilarious documentary Hail Satan?. The movie chronicles the satanic temple s fight in deeply Christian Arkansas and forces audiences to reconsider the sect religion that is so often a punchline. The film, starring Seth Rogen in dual leading roles, is an adaptation of the 2013 New Yorker series Sell Out by Simon Rich who also adapts, and is directed by Brandon Trost, the cinematographer from Rogen’s previous films This is the End, Neighbors, and The Interview.HBO Max announced in a statement that it had acquired the film from Sony Pictures so that it would not be delayed due to Covid-19 theater closures and will reach audiences this year.The film is based on Rich’s New Yorker novella and stars Rogen as Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer who immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The series “explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.” Bad Robot, King, and Warner Bros. Television previously collaborated on horror series Castle Rock for Hulu. Duster will be co-written by Abrams and LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead). Set in the 1970’s Southwest, the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful. With Tiggy’s cheerful attitude and Gweeseek’s exceptional inventing capabilities, the duo humorously navigate day-to-day dilemmas at the Department of Lost and Found.Tooned Out  executive produced by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future), is a half-hour, hybrid live-action and animated comedy. Things get a little cartoony for Mac when he starts seeing iconic cartoon characters in his life, but they’re not just there for laughs, they’re helping him get through a very rough patch in his life.Jellystone  a new animated children’s comedy series from Warner Bros. Animation that will welcome viewers to the town of Jellystone, where their favorite Hanna-Barbera characters live, work, play, and stir up trouble together.DC Super Hero High  a half-hour comedy series executive produced by Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels, Pitch Perfect, Shrill), which follows a group of students experiencing the fun and drama of adolescence at a boarding school for gifted kids. These teens are just trying to navigate the pressures of high school, but none of them realize that someday they will become legendary DC Super Heroes.Rap Sh*t (working title)  from Issa Rae (Insecure, A Black Lady Sketch Show) is a half-hour comedy series that follows a female rap group from outside of Miami trying to make it in the music industry.College Girls (working title)  the latest series from Mindy Kaling (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Late Night, The Mindy Project, The Office), is a 13-episode half-hour, single-camera comedy following three 18-year-old freshman roommates at Evermore College in Vermont who are equal parts lovable and infuriating.Strange Adventures  a DC Super Hero anthology series executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Titans, Doom Patrol), will feature characters from across the DC canon. This one-hour drama series will explore close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans.A Green Lantern–inspired series  from Berlanti Productions, the series will finally introduce characters from this iconic comic in Berlanti’s biggest series yet.A series of stand-up specials  presented by Conan O’Brien, the series will feature five new comedy specials. O’Brien will host two specials, featuring short sets from multiple up-and-coming comics while also curating one-hour sets from three comedians. In addition HBO Max has purchased the rights to a one-hour special from comedian James Veitch.Raised by Wolves (pictured above)  an epic serialized sci-fi series executive produced and directed by Ridley Scott (The Martian, Blade Runner, Alien: Covenant) centering on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet.Bobbie Sue  is a feature-length film starring Golden Globe–winner Gina Rodriquez (Jane the Virgin) following the story of a headstrong young lawyer who lands a career-making case with an upper crust law firm, only to realize she’s been hired for optics and not her expertise. 3.24.1 8月喜迎It is rare that the box office has an upset of the magnitude of this weekend s. It s even rarer that such a surprise victory does not come with the normal spoils one might expect from it. All the projections showed the adaptation of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep leading the pack with a haul in the mid-20s to as much as million. Roland Emmerich’s WWII FX-laden updating of Midway was trailing even behind Last Christmas among most projections. Nevertheless, Midway bucked the odds – or the typically wrong tracking services – and pulled out a victory with .5 million, albeit one that is the lowest-grossing number 1 in November since 2012 when The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – in its third weekend and in the doldrum weekend post-Thanksgiving – grossed .4 million.King of the Crop: Midway Causes Major Upset, But Faces A Battle to Profit(Photo by © Lionsgate)Midway s surprising victory at the box office does come with some caveats. Aside from the Twilight statistic noted above, Midway’s .5 million is the lowest opening weekend for Roland Emmerich since Stargate in 1994 (.6 million) and it seems unlikely to stretch to .5 million as that film did. (Though if this weekend taught us anything, it s that we should prepare for surprises.) That would then make it Emmerich’s lowest-grossing wide release since 1992’s Universal Soldier made .2 million. It will gross more than that but in the history of November only two wide releases – not rated “G” or “PG” – have ever opened to less than million and grossed over million. They were Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear (.09 million) and A Bad Moms Christmas (.11 million).Lionsgate can surely promote Midway as “the number 1 film in the country” this week but it is still staring down a 0 million price tag with not a lot of international appeal for its American victory tale. Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor grossed 0 million in international dollars. Lionsgate has only had nine films make as much as 0 million overseas: four were Hunger Games films and one was the final Twilight film. (The other four Twilights were released by Summit before Lionsgate acquired them.)Rotten Returns: Dark Fate indeed, for Terminator, but its Tomatometer score is rising (Photo by © Paramount Pictures)Paramount is not having the greatest of weeks. Their family film, Playing With Fire, is the worst-reviewed (24% on the Tomatometer) of the new releases this week; the nearly million-budgeted film grossed .8 million, which is hardly a disaster – and better than some projections – but not a rousing success, either. It is last week’s release of Terminator: Dark Fate, though, that is just not looking good; it dropped 63% to .8 million in its second week. A solid haul is not unheard of from here: Dark Fate is just a million behind Paramount s own Daddy’s Home 2’s 10-day gross (.21 million) just two years ago as it went on to squeak out over 4 million. But its second weekend is over .5 million less than what the Farrell/Wahlberg sequel earned in its second weekend. Dark Fate is also about a half-million ahead of The Muppets, which had a massive fallback in its second weekend back in 2011 and grossed over million. Terminator’s second weekend is also slightly behind that one (.08 million). However, an optimistic million finish means nothing without a stronger international showing and to date it sits at just 0 million when it is going to need more than 0 million outside the U.S. to break even. On the plus side, Dark Fate is one of those rare films whose Tomatometer score is actually getting better as it expands and more critics see it: it is currently Fresh at 72% after spending time in the 60s.The Top 10 And Beyond: Doctor Sleep Fails to Shine, Joker Enters The All-Time Top 50Doctor Sleep this week became the victim of too-lofty expectations. The numbers are truly disappointing though, which has pundits asking if Warner Bros. should have sold its connections to The Shining more forcefully – and whether there was an appetite for more Shining in the first place. Only four Stephen King adaptations have ever opened to over million – and two of them were this year with It: Chapter 2 and the Pet Sematary redux. (1408 and the first It were the others.) Inflation notwithstanding, Doctor Sleep had the 10th best opening for a King adaptation and at 73% on the Tomatometer ranks as the 11th best-reviewed theatrical release of a film based on the author s work.1980’s The Shining grossed approximately 9.5 million in adjusted dollars. Doctor Sleep’s .1 million start trails behind even Dreamcatcher, which opened to .02 million back in 2003. If you gave The Lawnmower Man an inflation boost from 1992, it would have grossed million today, right around what Mike Flanagan’s Ouija: Origin of Evil sequel opened to (.06 million) – though we should note that was 10 days before Halloween in 2016. The trouble for Doctor Sleep might have been with the release date. Horror is not a popular genre in November these days. Not a single horror film has grossed over million from a November start since before 2000. The Mist, a 2007 Stephen King adaptation released over Thanksgiving (and the 12th-highest–rated King adaptation at 72% on the Tomatometer) took in what equates to about million in ticket sales today on its first weekend.Also not a great genre in November: romantic comedies. At least, successful November rom-com releases have been pretty sparse. There have been some moderate numbers over the years for films like The American President (.07 million) and Love Actually (.69 million). Shallow Hal grossed .8 million, but that was sold more on its high-concept premise than as a traditional rom-com. Paul Feig’s Last Christmas began with .6 million this weekend. That puts the film likely in the - million range. As for those who are surprised Universal put out a Christmas movie in November, rather than December, it s not uncommon practice – and has worked well for some releases in the past. Its 3 million domestic and another 0 million internationally gives the film 4 million. That means it has now joined the list of the 50 highest-grossing films of all-time. Say goodbye to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (and say it soon to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Jungle Book once Frozen II and The Rise of Skywalker open) as Joker enters the list this weekend at 44th place; it is also headed soon to become the 44th film ever to reach billion.Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has had a bit of a rebound lately. It is going to pass 0 million at home sometime this week and it is now over 0 million worldwide. But it is still going to need about another 0 million before getting out of the red. The Addams Family is now well into profit with over 4 million worldwide, million of that domestically. United Artists Releasing (a combo of Annapurna, MGM, and Orion) had some rough box office results earlier this year with Booksmart and Laika’s Missing Link, but they have been more recently putting out movies that have been turning profits, like their remakes of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a.k.a. The Hustle) and Child’s Play. The Addams Family will be their biggest earner to date.Check out Harriet star Cynthia Erivo s Five Favorite FilmsHarriet dropped 38% and made .2 million in its second weekend. Between that and its .46 million gross to date, the film is in the vicinity of Allied and Stranger Than Fiction, which each managed to just get over the million line. That could make it just the 18th film in Focus Features history to reach that mark.Fox Searchlight expanded Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit from 256 theaters into 802 and it just missed hitting the top 10 with .9 million. That puts the film squarely between the studio’s (500) Days of Summer, which went from a third weekend of .77 million in 266 theaters to .73 million in 817 theaters, and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, which made .51 million in 238 theaters in weekend three and jumped into 791 theaters the next week to gross .05 million. Those films had .35 and .72 million, respectively, after 24 days. Jojo Rabbit is at .1 million.Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite moved into an “official” wide release this week, expanding into 602 theaters. It grossed another .5 million, which is better than The Farewell’s move to wide release from 409-to-704 theaters in its fifth weekend, where it grossed .09 million. The Neon release also has a slightly better per-theater-average (,152) than Boyhood had (,900), when it jumped in the same period from 310-to-506 theaters. The Farewell had .2 million after 31 days; Parasite has .2 million (and another .5 million internationally); Boyhood had .5 million and grossed over million. The 2018 Suspiria remake had a ,019 average in just two theaters. It is also the fourth-best PTA of 2019 behind Parasite, The Farewell, and Avengers: Endgame.This Time Last Year: The Grinch Kicks Off Holiday Season With Plenty of GreenThe second weekend of November 2018 brought us Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, from Illumination. The feature-length animated version of the classic story opened to .57 million. Hanging strong was Bohemian Rhapsody, grossing .2 million and just getting over its first 0 million in 10 days. In third place was the Nazi monster film, Overlord, with .2 million and back in sixth place was Claire Foy taking over the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl In the Spider’s Web, which made just .8 million. Just before the weekend, Venom passed the 0 million mark. A Star is Born rose to 8 million and David Gordon Green’s Halloween was at 6 million. The top 10 films grossed a total of 2.58 million and averaged 59.2% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated .7 million and averaged 55% with critics.On the Vine: Ford, Ferrari, and A Trio of AngelsNext week a pair of new challengers for the number 1 spot emerge and most are betting on James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari with Christian Bale and Matt Damon to be victorious. The true-life racing drama is Certified Fresh at 91% on the Tomatometer after a successful festival run. The box office must also find room for Elizabeth Banks’ new reboot of Charlie’s Angels with Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. The previous big-screen iterations both grossed over 0 million, but will this one draw the same nostalgic interest? Warner Bros. is also releasing Bill Condon’s latest, The Good Liar, with Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, which is expected to come in on the low-end of the charts. King of the Crop: The Upside Continues Kevin Hart’s Strong January Numbers(Photo by © STX Entertainment)STX’s strongest opener is still Bad Moms (.8 million), but a .5 million start for The Upside is a true victory for a studio which has not had a success since A Bad Mom’s Christmas back in 2017. And the news could be even better for them considering that they are only on the hook for the prints and advertising, which is reportedly less than million. The million production budget rests elsewhere as this film was originally repped by the Weinstein Co. when it premiered at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival. A month later the Harvey scandal erupted and his company s films were eventually shelved or sold off. Poor Paddington 2 was one of them and it failed to find half of the original’s audience last January. The .5 million of The Upside would have been the fifth biggest opening ever for the now defunct Company, just ahead of the original Paddington’s .9 million start.Kevin Hart, on the other hand, has had some big openings so this number relatively pales in comparison. Just in January alone Hart has opened Ride Along (.5 million), Ride Along 2 (.2 million), and The Wedding Ringer (.6 million) to bigger numbers but his prevailing starpower is clearly a factor in The Upside’s success. Films in January opening between and million have finished anywhere between .6 and .6 million. The 4-day holiday next weekend can only help if word-of-mouth holds and it stays in second behind the launch of Glass. Only three of the 10 films in that range managed to gross three times their opening weekend. But one of those three was The Wedding Ringer.Rotten Returns: Replicas Unmatched For Futility Of Keanu Reeves Openers(Photo by Entertainment Studios)The Upside was not the only film delayed until this weekend. Replicas was pulled from the 2018 schedule and dumped into theaters now with no press screenings to boot. The 13% on the Tomatometer can clue you into why. The .5 million it made is the lowest amount ever for any Keanu Reeves headliner to open on more than 2,000 screens. The previous low was Johnny Mnemonic opening to million in 2,030 theaters back in 1995; that was his first film since the success of Speed the previous summer. The million-budgeted film was bought by Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios for million back in 2017 and will continue a streak of financial losers for them.The Top Ten And Beyond: Aquaman Reaches Milestone For DC’s Cinematic Universe(Photo by Warner Bros.)Aquaman may have missed the opportunity of four straight weeks at no. 1, but it will surely trade that as it became just the 37th film ever to reach the billion dollar milestone this weekend. That is the second billion dollar film under James Wan’s watch and he has done it with two separate franchises. (Furious 7 grossed .51 billion worldwide.) It should reach the 0 million mark in the U.S. by the end of next weekend’s holiday.Kids may be back in school but that doesn’t account for the huge drop that Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns took this weekend. From .8 million (third place last week) to .2 million (eighth place this week) that’s a 54% drop (the biggest in the top 10) putting it virtually out of the running to achieve what some of us perceived to be an inevitability. With 0.6 million in its 26th day that puts it smack dab between Wreck-It Ralph and Coco for Disney features – or 9-9 million as a final gross. However, no December release with less than 2 million in the same timeframe ever reached the 0 million mark. The film still needs roughly another 2 million to turn a profit.Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse should be into profit by now and is actually en route to swinging over Mary Poppins’ domestic total. It may be in the same boat as far as not reaching 0 million, but it should take delight in the 0 million range where its headed. Bumblebee remains poised to become the lowest-grossing, best-reviewed Transformers film to date, though Viacom has said the movie is already solidly profitable . Its total stands at 4 million worldwide. Clint Eastwood’s The Mule should now certainly reach the 0 million mark (the sixth of his directorial career) but is still going to need around million internationally to turn a profit.Sony’s A Dog’s Way Home s .3 million is really neither here nor there. Not as much as Max (.1 million) but a bit better than Because of Winn-Dixie (.2 million). Snow Dogs and Hotel for Dogs both had better January starts with .8 million and million, respectively. Last week’s top (new) dog, Escape Room, is up to a respectable .4 million. Annapurna’s awards hopeful, Vice, is up to .9 million, while Focus’ less-awards-hopeful, On the Basis of Sex  added 1,811 theaters to its run this weekend and grossed .2 million. Its total stands at .5 million. Also expanding was Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, which added 683 theaters (for 1,018 total) and grossed .38 million. Moonlight did not cross 1,000 theaters until the weekend after the Oscar nominations. It expanded to 650 theaters on its fifth weekend and grossed .48 million for a total of .6 million. Beale Street has made .68 million after its fifth weekend. Critical darling Paddington 2 (still a perfect 100% with 216 posted reviews) made million, and Taraji P. Henson in Proud Mary grossed .9 million. The top 10 films grossed 9.3 million and averaged 64.3% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated million and averaged 68.1%On the Vine: Glass Hopes To Break January Records Though Critics Already Throwing StonesAlex VoUniversal is poised to have one of the biggest January openings of all-time. Likely second if you count American Sniper’s wide release back in 2015. M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, the third film in his surprise Unbreakable trilogy, is the only major release next week and those who made Split a big hit in 2017 are likely to come out in droves. For at least its opening weekend. The studio lifted the embargo for reviews of the film this past Wednesday and the response from critics (currently 37% on the Tomatometer) may be reflected in audience disappointment and see the grosses trail off. And we thought, ‘Well, maybe [the sequence] could still work [without it] because there’s some really charming stuff.’ But the strange thing was, not only did we not feel the emotion as strongly in that one little sequence, but as we watched the rest of the film the whole film lost a little bit. I can’t really fully explain that other than to say it was a real dark, low moment for them that I think made that relationship feel more real. The sort of pain and loss of that situation bonded those characters together and made you empathize more with them. I started to work on this notion that he s called Gollum because of the way he sounds – and what would make his voice sound like that? I started to think about constriction of the throat, and as I was doing that, I was actually fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball. It suddenly gave me this idea that the whole physicality of the role would be determined by this force within, which is kind of built out of guilt and torment – this involuntary physical action is what caused this sound coming out of his mouth. The cat throwing up a fur ball is actually what generated the idea for this involuntary spewing out of words. And she naturally sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on. And they end up on a bearskin rug, and he was combing her hair, and it was this expansive sequence of her little love affair with Christian Bale. In the meantime, [back in the real world] Helen gets the women to get the dress she wants because Annie is caught up in her fantasy. So that was the original [scene]. And then I think Judd said at one point we ll never get Christian Bale to do this. And then we tried to put in Matt Damon and then we re like, As if we re going to get Matt Damon to do this.’ He was concerned we weren t going to get anybody to do it. And also he felt it needed harder comedy there, rather than what we had. So, we sadly let that go. We did not want to let that go. We loved that sequence. After directing a series of absurd comedies starring Will Ferrell like the Anchorman movies, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers, Adam McKay took a soft turn into more adult territory with 2015 s The Big Short, an unusual and inventive look at the housing bubble that led to the 2008 financial crisis. This week marks the next step in his evolution, as he tackles the rise to power of former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney with similar storytelling panache in Vice, starring Christian Bale as the enigmatic veep, Amy Adams as his wife Lynne, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld, and Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush. Critics say McKay s irreverent tone sometimes feels like a mismatch for the serious material the film covers, but it s nevertheless an ambitious undertaking that s made better by strong performances from its A-list cast especially Bale, who disappears into the role under eerily spot-on makeup and more than a few extra pounds. While it may not be as incisive or amusing as The Big Short, Vice is still worth a watch for a glimpse into the life of a famously unknowable man.

om the H in the Hollywood sign in the early 1930s.The limited series, co-created by Ian Brennan, plays out like a dream – what would happen if profit-driven studios had taken the brave step of giving minorities major lead roles during Hollywood s Golden Age? – and comes loaded with many of über-producer Murphy s TV signatures. There s a cast of attractive young newcomers (Broadway star Jeremy Pope, Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Harrier, and more); a handful of Murphy veterans (The Assassination of Gianni Versace’s Darren Criss, The Politician’s David Corenswet); plenty of visual panache, this time with a 1940s Hollywood flair; and lots to put a smile on any LGBTQ viewer s face — a fictionalized Rock Hudson is among the lead characters, for starters.And as with American Horror Story, Feud, and other Murphy-produced series, Hollywood is marked by a number of veteran actresses in the kind of complex, flashy roles you don t see a lot of outside of Murphyland. Holland Taylor is a wise studio executive; Mira Sorvino plays an aging actress struggling to land a role; and Broadway legend Patti LuPone stars as Avis Amberg, the studio head s wife who has to take over when he suffers a heart attack. It s Avis who makes the call to cast Washington, and who deals with the fallout, and it s LuPone who runs away with the series: Whether she s dressing down a group of bean counters trying to shutter her studio, getting plastered backstage at the Oscars, or getting freaky with 26-year-old Corenswet s Jack – expect memes of the staircase moment to do the rounds – she s a joy to watch.Rotten Tomatoes recently called LuPone at the Connecticut home that s enjoyed some fame during quarantine; the actress has been offering virtual tours of her eclectically decorated basement on Twitter ever since fans began obsessing over it when she appeared on a Rosie O Donnell live stream. It was the day after her birthday when we called, and she was hungover from a night with people on Zoom getting trashed on martinis — not something she usually drinks. Her mouth may have been dry, but LuPone had plenty to say about working with Murphy, what she d change about the entertainment industry today, her Tiger King–themed birthday present, and why those in the arts deserve more respect.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Hollywood is just the latest Ryan Murphy production you ve been a part of – fans will remember you from AHS and Pose. What is it about what Ryan’s doing in the television landscape that’s drawing you to his projects?Patti LuPone: He offers me jobs. It s simple is that. And he offers me really great parts. I did a little thing on Glee, that was the first time I worked for him. I got a call from my agent, and they were very excited about it, they said, Ryan Murphy wants to do a whole episode about you, Patti. And I m like, No, I m still a working actor. I cannot be Patti LuPone d out of the business. And they were shocked I said no. Because they didn t know how Ryan would react. I said, Tell them, I would be happy to do one scene, but I can t have an entire episode. And I did this one scene with Lea Michele and Cory Monteith. But then I was offered American Horror Story then Pose and now this.You know what Ryan’s doing? He s forming a repertory company on film. And that s an extraordinary thing — that Ryan will offer you a great part in a great television show, you know what I mean? It s just really wonderful that somebody trusts you enough to go, “Here, play this. Here, play that.” It s always different.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)This particular role in Hollywood, Avis, is so meaty. Part of it is just the clothes — which I m still getting over because you get to wear some amazing stuff — but then you also get to have this boy toy and some pretty wild sex scenes with David [Corenswet]. And then she becomes this boss business woman. What was it like to play all these aspects of Avis?LuPone: Well, I had an indication [of the arc] when Ryan talked to me about the part; he told me what would happen, that she would end up running a studio and making movies just for gays, minorities, and women. So I knew that that was going to be the arc of the character. And he did preface it by saying, “…and she has sex scenes.” And I said: Finally. We only got a script at a time, so I didn t really know how exactly it was going to unfold. I was thrilled that he trusted me, and I was thrilled that he gave me meat to act.Ryan has spoken about Hollywood as a sort of rewriting of movie history that gives people a happy ending who didn t necessarily get a happy ending in many ways. It’s a corrective fantasy. Is there something about the entertainment industry or Hollywood today that you would rewrite, as Ryan does in the series? What would you change about the industry if you could?LuPone: First of all, there are no showmen left. Do you know what I mean? There s no Louis B. Mayers, Jack Warners left; there are no Irving Thalbergs left. These people had theater in their blood. And I mean theater encompassing everything, do you know what I mean? They would have theatrical blood where they could choose writers and they could choose materials; materials to give to an audience. What are we doing as far as filmmaking is concerned today? We re regenerating cartoons.So I would hope that artists would lead. And I don t just mean actors, I mean anybody with an artistic bent would lead. My problem is that — and this is on Broadway as well, any entertainment aspect — we are second-guessing the audience. We are underestimating the audience. They can take a whole lot more and they need it. We need to educate, [and] they need to educate us. So, we should put everything out, much broader ideas, and let the audience decide. They are smarter than we think they are, or that we give them credit for. (Not me, because I m on that side of the stage where I deal with them.) But we need to empower the people that green-light films so they aren t underestimating them.Is the problem that those particular decision-makers lack an artistic bent?LuPone: I think that s part of it. The other is financial. I saw it changing when I was doing [ABC drama] Life Goes On years ago. I saw it changing when the Harvard bean counters, the Yale bean counters came out and took over Hollywood and the music industry. I d heard about it and I sort of felt it when I was in California, that was 1989 to 1993. You could feel it changing.Also, there should be more women in every position of power, not just in the entertainment industry, but in our politics. There s just something that the men lack right now and that s empathy.Ryan seems to have that quality.LuPone: Oh, Ryan is a champion.OK, I have to ask you about your time social distancing in Connecticut. Your home, and particularly your basement, has taken the Internet by storm ever since you appeared on Rosie O’Donnell’s live stream, and you’ve showed us your cassettes and jukebox and all sorts of things on Twitter. Are you surprised that people are so fascinated by your home and your basement and your life right now?LuPone: Yes. Yes. Yes. But you know what, if it s bringing anybody joy, I m very happy to do it. It has to be when the inspiration strikes, so that there is a mood to [the Twitter videos]. And today the mood struck because we were planning this one and I had to wait until I was sort of in the right frame of mind. What happened was I got really trashed last night because it s my birthday. I got trashed on martinis, which I don t drink. So I m hungover today and I said to my kid, Let s do it. I m not bathing, I m not combing my hair. I m not brushing my teeth. Let s do it right now. And we did it. I don t remember anything, but my husband told me. Because it was Bingo, it was Zoom Bingo. And I started yelling at the computer — well not the computer — and then I won and then I peed my pants and then I came upstairs. What the hell was happening? Maybe there s too much information for you, but it was one of those sort of I just passed out. Then I woke up this morning, my throat was so dry, my head was pounding. Who the hell knows?These days it s just kind of like every night could turn into that if you let it. I haven t seen a movie collection necessarily or DVDs or VHSes in your basement. Do you have one and what might we find in it?LuPone: Yes. And you know it s in the corner? It was by Nipper [her statue of the RCA dog]. But we ve just gotten rid of a lot of VHSes as well — actually we haven t gotten rid of the VHSes yet, because we re going to transfer them to digital — but [we have gotten rid of] a lot of the DVDs because they re basically on the computer. We’re leaving our home to our kids, right? That s what parents do. So my husband and I, in this time, are trying to lessen our imprint — not that we re going to die anytime soon, but you know how you collect stuff? We’re in the process of purging a lot of stuff that is not necessary anymore. So a lot of the DVDs went south. I m not going to watch the movies again, or if I want to, they re on Netflix or YouTube. So the physical movies are gone. I mean, I just got rid of a bookcase: 12 boxes of books that I got rid of!Oh no! But that s good. You re doing your part. Is there a film that you ve returned to or a TV show that you ve returned to during this time? Or something new you’ve discovered?LuPone: I m watching Babylon Berlin and My Brilliant Friend and Grace and Frankie, and now I want to watch Unorthodox; oh, somebody told me about Sex Education. But what I m doing is reading, I m reading a lot. I m reading the latest translation of Madame Bovary, which I d never read. Then starting on Hilary Mantel s The Light and the Mirror.I’m reading that at the moment, actually. Did you see the Wolf Hall miniseries?LuPone: I did. And at first, I didn t understand what Mark Rylance was doing [in the role of Thomas Cromwell]. But I think Mark Rylance is one of the great actors. I didn t understand what he was doing, and then Oh, Oh. It deeply revealed itself. I got an authentic bumper sticker that says “Joe Exotic for President.” But it s one of those authentic ones from 2016.That s amazing. Ryan is reportedly working on series about Joe Exotic with Rob Lowe. Is there a role that you would covet to play?LuPone: Maybe Saff. Saff Saffery. [Laughs] I should play Saff; I m too old to play Saff. Um Yeah. We ll have to find a role for me. I don t know. I can t be Carole Baskin… No, it d be a challenge. On a more serious note, there’s been a lot of talk these last few weeks about how important the arts are — we’ve all turned to TV and film and music and reading to keep ourselves sane. Do you think there might be some sort of landscape change in terms of how government and people just view writers and musicians and filmmakers when this is all over? More respect? More funding?LuPone: Not as long as we have the present government. Not at all  I do not think so if the Republicans hold power; I think we will sink further, further into obscurity if they hold on to power in 2020. And I think we are taken for granted, and we are also treated as third-class citizens in this country. That s been my experience my entire career, in various ways. So I don t think so. But other countries? Probably so, because they re just smarter than we are. And more cultured than we are.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)I’m wondering if you can expand a little for someone who s reading this and doesn t understand perhaps what you mean by “third-class citizens.” The perception might be, Patti LuPone or Ryan Murphy, et cetera, all live wonderful lives. Can you unpack that a bit?LuPone: Theatricals have always been treated with phenomenal distrust. The actress on stage, she was considered a prostitute; they were the first people that wore makeup and she was they were sub-society. I remember when I was performing, The Acting Company was performing at the Ford Theater, the reopening of the Ford Theater during Jimmy Carter s administration. And the Carters were coming to the performance that night, and we were invited to the White House to meet the President. Basically, it was the clearing out of the social calendar and there were some celebrities there: Alexis Smith, Henry Fonda, John Houseman. And just as they got to Henry Fonda and John Houseman, the military guards stopped the receiving line. I actually said, No, no, you can t do that. They re coming to see us tonight. And we were escorted off the property, basically. We ve always been considered do I want to say “non-essential”? Even though it is.I have said forever, it s an inherent right: The arts are an inherent right in human nature. And they keep de-funding the National Endowment for the Arts. I mean people were bitching that they gave the Kennedy Center million in the first stimulus package. The arts are crucial for mental and spiritual health. Yet we are, like I said, taken for granted. Or put in situations where we are totally dismissed. I have felt it my entire career. And, yes, I make a living. [But] I don t always make a living. There s that expression, You re only as good as your last shift, and I m going to be in financial peril if this goes on too much longer. I m no different than anybody else.Finally, we know that one of your theatrical pet peeves is when people put their phones on in the theater — you famously grabbed a phone from an audience member during a performance of Gypsy on Broadway. Do you have any pet peeves when you re going to the cinema? Things that really bother you?LuPone: The same thing. People talking during the movie or people texting during the movie. It s the exact same thing, you are together in a proscenium environment. And it s public manners. We, in this country, have forgotten our public manners — that other people exist besides ourselves. Tarkin Takes Credit for Krennic’s Work – Rogue OneOrson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is a wonderful view into the way the Empire truly operated. Dogged and relentless, he proves the Death Star s main weapon will work after years of delays only to see Grand Moff Tarkin (a CGI Peter Cushing) assume command and take the credit. His composure melts as he screams about “my work” to an unimpressed gaggle of moffs and generals. It might be Mendelson’s talent for playing officious middle managers, but Krennic became one of our favorite Imps in this moment.30. Bail Organa Gets Involved – Revenge of the SithFrom his appearance in Attack of the Clones, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smitts) is a nameless anomaly in a film comprised of awkward introductions. But he makes his mark in RotS by investigating a fire at the Jedi Temple. In doing so, he becomes a leading figure in the Rebellion and the adoptive father of one of its most important heroes. His actions prove to be quietly heroic, but have far reaching effects.29. Leia Strangles Jabba the Hutt – Return of the Jedi(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Among the chaos Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) sowed to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt, he left dealing with the gangster to the capable hands of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). In using the very chain Jabba employed to make her his pet, she made a statement at least one member of Jabba’s retinue understood before the end. Never shy to make statements, it is one of Leia’s most impressive and direct scenes of action in the Original Trilogy.28. Han Fails To Fool The Empire – Star WarsThough known for his swagger, Han’s dopiness keeps him from being an insufferable character. And this may be the greatest example of his dopiness getting the best of him. Thanks to his time in the Imperial Army, he should know the proper procedure to keep the Imps at bay during the jailbreak, but the ruse collapses thanks to a hasty “how are you?” It’s funny, character-revealing, and a great way to ratchet up the tension.27. Leia Senses Luke Is In Trouble – The Empire Strikes BackWhile it is clear Lucas decided to make them siblings after Empire was released, it is almost impossible to read this late moment in the film as anything but foreshadowing of Luke and Leia’s true relationship. If you can see it another way, it reveals Leia as someone who may not be Force-sensitive, but attuned enough to receive Luke’s telepathic call. Or, as it now text, she is also strong in the Force, but untrained. In any of these readings, it is a powerful moment for Leia with a nice slice of comedy at the end thanks to Lando Calrissian’s (Billy Dee Williams) reaction to her orders.26. Palpatine vs Yoda – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The better of the Prequel Trilogy’s two Yoda battles, this one derives its power from actor Ian McDiarmid going full cackling Republic serial villain. He has the high ground and relishes it with each laugh and each Force-push of a delegate conveyance. The symbolism of Palpatine smashing the Senate might be a little too on the nose, but he’s not worried about subtlety here. He’s won, which also makes Yoda’s retreat surprisingly poignant and their fight all the more important.25. “We Would Be Honored If You Would Join Us.” – The Empire Strikes BackIn a film stuffed with reversals, Darth Vader’s (voiced by James Earl Jones) dinner date with Leia, Han, and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) is one of the best. Lando’s duplicity is revealed. Boba Fett proves Han cannot escape his grasp. And in their only direct confrontation, Han learns he’s definitely no match for a Sith Lord. It’s quick, it’s punctuated by blaster fire and Chewie’s growls, and it’s just a great scene.24. R2-D2 Reactivates The Hyperdrive – The Empire Strikes BackThroughout most of the saga, astromech droid R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) has had plenty of chances to save his humanoid friends. Without him, the Naboo delegation would never have made it to Tatooine. But this may be his most heroic action because of the stakes involved and C-3PO s (Anthony Daniels) nagging about his leg. Without R2 reconnecting one cable, the history of the galaxy might be very different.23. Luke Finds Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s Remains – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The most gruesome scene in Star Wars overall is also one of its most pivotal. According to the principles of screenwriting, Luke has refused the call to action. He needs a powerful motivator to accept the call and go on his adventure. In this case, it is the sight of his uncle and aunt’s charred remains among the blasted ruins of their homestead. It is a shocking moment worthy of its unsettling imagery. Short of a bloody arm a few minutes later, Star Wars films would never do something this graphic again.22. Rey Pulls The Lightsaber Through The Air – The Force AwakensIn a film filled with fan wish-fulfillment, this may be most fans’ fondest – to reach out with the Force, pull a lightsaber through the air, activate it, and hold their own against a Sith Lord. Yes, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) may not be a true Sith – and Rey (Daisy Ridley) is no Jedi here – but that’s beside the point. This is a moment every Star Wars fan has played out in their backyard, schoolyard, or imagination, and it suddenly lives inside a Star Wars movie.21. Boba Fett’s Entrance – The Empire Strikes Back“No disintegrations.” With this directive from Vader, bounty hunter Boba Fett became Star Wars’s greatest man of mystery. Surrounded by intriguing bounty hunters like IG-88, Bossk, and Zuckuss, Fett stood out – and not just because he was an early release Empire action figure. His response, “As you wish,” suggests disintegrations have been a problem in the past, or something Vader specifically hired Fett to do previously. Either way, it gave Fett a mystique so powerful, it rivals Vader’s.20. Vader Promotes Piett To Admiral – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Many fan theories online suggest Admiral Ozzel (Michael Sheard) was revealed as an Alliance spy as a way to explain his gross negligence in the search for Luke. But whether an enemy saboteur or a grossly incompetent Imp who peter-principled his way to the admiralty, his death is both hilarious and disturbing thanks to the reaction of his junior officer, Captain Piett (Kenneth Colley), who Vader immediately elevates to command the fleet. We like to imagine Piett spent his entire career waiting for his superiors to anger Vader so he could accept these quick promotions. Call it the Piett Principle.19. Vader Attempts To Board The Tantive IV – Rogue OneVader as Jason Voorhies. A late addition to the film during its infamous reshoots, Vader’s attempt to secure the Death Star plans from the Rebels as they raced to the blockade runner Tantive IV is the best example of what the Sith Lord looked like to rank-and-file members of the Alliance. He’s a horror movie slasher with a laser sword and magic powers. But most importantly, he’s unstoppable. Consequently, it is one of the most effective scenes in the film despite the lack of the entire main cast.18. Obi-Wan’s Debut – Star WarsFirst, he convinces the Tusken Raiders that a Krayt Dragon is nearby. Then he attends to the unconscious Luke. When R2-D2 comes out of the shadows to investigate, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) removes his hood and offers a warm, bemused “Well, hello there.” With each expansion of the character’s past, this moment – and the following scene with Luke – takes on more meaning, but these three words offer so much of the character: his wisdom, his playfulness, and the prototype image of a Jedi we use to this day.17. Vader Force-Chokes General Motti – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While Obi-Wan made the Force sound amazing a few scenes earlier, Vader gave it its visceral power with this moment. As Lucas would later claim, this is Vader’s lowest point. He is below Tarkin in the Imperial power structure and faces a gaggle of disbelieving generals like Motti (Richard LeParmentier), who mocks the Sith Lord’s “sad devotion” to the Force with every muscle in his face. Vader chokes him from afar and the soundtrack offers a haunting rumble. And in that moment, every kid wanted to wield the power of the Force.16. Lando’s Introduction – The Empire Strikes BackFeigning anger at the arrival of the Millennium Falcon in Cloud City proves a key thing about Lando Calrissian: he is a shrewd sabacc player. It makes Han feel at home and sets up Lando s later betrayal when Vader reveals himself to the rebels. But it also reveals Lando’s playful side. More than any other character in the Original Trilogy, he wants to have fun. Even if he has to sell out a friend, he will find a way enjoy it. Well, at least until the deal is altered.15. Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul – The Phantom MenaceAs the first glimpse of Jedi and Sith in a live-action duel, this was one of The Phantom Menace’s defining sequences. Maul (Ray Park) meets his match in Ewan McGregor s Padawan, who uses his anger to counter the Sith Lord. But Maul is ultimately unprepared for Obi-Wan’s awareness of the environment around him – the “Living Force” Qui-Gonn wanted him to be mindful of at the start of the film. Between the great choreography and the story point, it proves to be one of the best fights in the whole series.14. Luke Brushes Dust Off His Robe – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)For all the might the Force gives a Jedi, there was always the suspicion a true master could defeat his enemy with just a few gestures. This is that moment for Master Jedi Luke Skywalker. The boy who sought swashbuckling adventure was always destined for the sort of composure and interior strength required for this sickest of burns. It puts his opponent off his footing and allows the Resistance to escape – the real victory to be found in this confrontation.13. “Judge Me By My Size, Will You?” – The Empire Strikes BackYoda’s view of the Force was proof there was more to it than lifting rocks. But it would take this dramatic moment, in which the Jedi Master raises Luke’s X-Wing from the muck, to prove the energy field binding the universe defies all underlying perceptions about reality. A hyperdrive-capable snub fighter is no heavier than a pebble to one truly allied with the Force. That this lesson is offered by one of Star Wars’s smallest characters gives this line of thinking its exclamation point.12. “This Is How Liberty Dies To Thunderous Applause” – Revenge of the SithPalpatine’s first public appearance as Emperor is filled with strange moments. He looks like bleached hamburger. He calls out the Jedi as would-be usurpers. He announces the Republic will be “reorganized” into the First Galactic Empire in lieu of a complete change in the government. And he promises a more “secure society.” Despite the odd framing and phrasing, it is a genuinely chilling moment punctuated by Padme’s comment: a warning of just how easily republics can fall.11. “It s Time to Let Old Things Die” – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)While Kylo’s speech to Rey could still be a dodge about her true parentage, his repudiation of the Jedi and the Sith in that moment speaks to anyone who sees the absolutism of those philosophies as the root of the galaxy’s problems. Sure, the Jedi are generally in the right, but they did nothing to alleviate slavery in the Outer Rim. And that surely contributed to Anakin Skywalker’s (Hayden Christensen) fall as much as any of his own actions. Outside of the film, it is also a call to the future of Star Wars – provided they stick the landing with The Rise of Skywalker.10. Luke And the Emperor’s Verbal Sparring Session – Return of the JediLuke’s “Your overconfidence is your weakness,” immediately followed by Palpatine’s “Your faith in your friends is yours” may not only be the best exchange in Episode VI, it may also be the key to understanding the difference between the Sith and, well, everyone else. Evil in the Star Wars galaxy is about being uniform even though it proves to be the very reason the Sith and the Empire fall. A sense of fellowship, meanwhile, allows the Alliance to thrive. Luke and Emperor become the embodiment of these philosophies and it is ultimately Anakin who must choose between them.9. Leia Saves Their Skins – Star WarsPresuming her to be a damsel in distress, Luke quickly learns Leia just needs a blaster and a window of opportunity to save herself. Oh, and she helps out these dopes who barged into the Death Star detention block. And much to Han’s dismay, she takes immediate control of a situation he thought was his. It may have led to the garbage smasher, but it was still a successful strategy. Also, her quick wit and quick thinking prove why she will always be our princess.8. The Alliance Attacks Scarif – Rogue One(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)The concluding fight above Scarif is, without a doubt, the best space-fight realized in a live-action Star Wars project thus far. Taking all of the techniques learned since 1977, it brings us back to that general look, but ups the ante with colliding Star Destroyers, callbacks to both Red and Gold Leaders, and a cameo by key Star Wars Rebels spaceship the Ghost. All the while, terrific photography and editing give it an exceptional verisimilitude. In many ways, it is the battle kids who grew up with Star Wars have been dreaming about since the 1980s.7. Palpatine Tempts Anakin In the Opera Hall – Revenge of the SithThe most accomplished scene in the film centers on Sheev Palpatine tempting Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) with the power to save Padme (Natalie Portman) and teasing the audience with the answer to Anakin’s parentage. Told as a parable on the dangers of Sith power, McDiarmid is at his subtlest – even if Sheev is a cartoon villain – as he relishes a well-written speech. It is also here that we finally see the seductive allure of the Dark Side Yoda eventually warned Luke about.6. The Trench Run – Star WarsA triumph of model work, editing, score, and scripting, the original Star Wars trench run is the battle scene from which nearly all other Star Wars space fights derive. Itself inspired by battles in World War II movies (and footage from the conflict itself), the sequence also proved Luke was a more accomplished pilot than his father. Although, viewers just wouldn’t know it for twenty years.5. “You were my brother, Anakin! I Loved You.” – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While the long-awaited duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan fails to be one of the great fights, its immediate aftermath may be the most emotionally resonant moment in the whole Prequel Trilogy. Obi-Wan watches, heartbroken, as Anakin succumbs completely to the Dark Side. Slding toward a lava flow, the tortured Anakin shouts “I hate you!” And just before the heat sets Anakin aflame, Obi-Wan reminds him of their bond. In a literal sea of CGI lava, it is the most human moment to be found in the first three episodes.4. “I Know.” – The Empire Strikes BackHarrison Ford’s well known skepticism of Star Wars dialogue gave rise to Han’s best moment of swagger. Facing the carbonite freezer, he breaks away for one last kiss with Leia. She finally admits her love to him and instead of telling her to remember that (as scripted), Ford uttered the swagger-filled “I know” during one take. It impressed director Irvin Kershner and cemented Han’s cool factor for generations.  It also gets a worthy callback when Leia says it to Han in the next film.3. The First Jump To Light Speed – Star WarsAs an early critic of the film noted, Star Wars brought speed to science fiction. Previously, spaceships lumbered slowly across the screen, but here they darted at impossible speeds. Thankfully, the Industrial Light Magic geniuses were able to visualize this sense of velocity with one of the greatest visual effects in all of cinema; it propels the viewer as much as it takes the Falcon to hyperspace and became the only way for the rest of us to imagine lightspeed.2. The Mos Eisley Cantina – Star WarsFor as much as Star Wars is about the Hero’s Journey and the creation of a modern mythology, it is also about exotic creatures. Before Lucas realized he could sell that imagery to kids in the form of action figures, he and the talents at ILM worked long and hard to sell this first major reveal of aliens from a thousand worlds. Backed by composer John Williams’ now-classic Cantina Band song, it offered viewers their first glimpse into a larger world.1. “No, I am your father.” – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Not just the best Star Wars moment overall, but one of the great twists in all of cinema. The entire Skywalker saga revolves around this moment in which Vader tells Luke the truth about his paternity. And Luke responds in the exact way we would: an ugly cry. In terms of classical screenwriting, it is the protagonist confronting his lowest point. But the emotion involved – including the sense of betrayal involved – speaks to people at a genetic level. It s the thing crawling out the television set in The Ring. It s the spirit of a dead person – usually, in the folklore, a woman who has been wronged in life and has come back with this insatiable rage, this all-consuming hunger that cannot be – it is literally impossible to quench,” Woo explained.(Photo by AMC)The spirit of season 2 then lies in the genre of kaidan, old-fashioned Japanese ghost stories, which U.S. audiences have not seen much of on TV, aside from genre films playing on cable or on streaming services or in Japanese series available online.This story starts at Terminal Island, between San Pedro and Long Beach in California, ahead of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and follows Japanese families into internment by the U.S. government during wartime. Woo and his team didn’t have a book to follow, as season 1 executive producers David Kajganich and Soo Hugh did in adapting Dan Simmons’ 2007 fictionalized account of the doomed Arctic expedition, but were able to research eyewitness accounts from about 125,000 internment camp survivors from archives and organizations, like the Japanese American National Museum and Densho at Heart Mountain, which was one of the camps. The goal was to recreate the world of the internment camps.“We were the beneficiaries of some real, real geniuses on the show who built a world out of Vancouver, which is not a small task. Vancouver s a very modern city. It doesn t look like 1940s anything. To create not only a period world which spans two continents, and many, many states, it is no small feat,” Woo said. “To do it in a way that doesn t fall into those images you get in your mind of World War II period pieces — it s drab, you know? I didn t want it to feel drab. I wanted it to feel very present, and very alive. They created a visual signature with this piece. John Conroy and Barry Dunleavy, our cinematographers, created this really gorgeous cinematic visual style that was really lush, and moody, and atmospheric.“Then, Jonathan McKinstry, our production designer, went into painstaking detail to recreate the world from archival photos. So much so that when George Takei walked into our set, he said, ‘This is exactly how I remember it, with one exception.’ With the exception of some plates that we had, which were not chipped enough. We went and chipped them up so they would look a little more worn,” Woo recalled.(Photo by AMC)Takei plays Yamato-san, an 80-year-old living on Terminal Island who warns members of the younger generations of the danger of the yūrei.“Early on in the season, the characters use a bunch of different terms because they re not entirely sure what it is.,” Woo said. “Early on they use terms like ‘obake,’ which is a term for a spirit, which is kind of neutral. It could be even benevolent. It could be benevolent, or malevolent. Then, they use the term bakemono’ a little later on, which refers to something a little more malevolent.”Infamy’s story focuses particularly on 22-year-old Chester Nakayama (Derek Mio), who has dropped some of the elder generations’ cultural observances – like believing in yūrei – for his own American experience, including dreams of becoming a Life magazine photographer and a relationship with Mexican-American Luz Ojeda (Cristina Rodlo).“The genesis of this comes from my co-creator Max Borenstein, who had actually heard George Takei give a talk 20 years ago, and was inspired to pitch this idea to AMC of telling an internment story through this genre lens, and specifically using the kaidan – or Japanese folk tales/Japanese ghost stories – at the center of it, and that would be the genre component of it,” Woo related.“You see in the first few episodes, to the immigrant generation, the older generation, the ghosts are very real. They are as real as you or I,” he said. “It is not a figment or a superstition or any sort of made up hoo-ha. To Chester s generation, this is just some sort of weird old-country belief that he does not believe, until [a point when] he s pretty sure it s real now. But early on, he completely pooh-poohed the notion. And that, to me, is a great illustration – one of many – of the rift between the immigrant generation and the American-born generation, the Issei and Nisei, in our show.”(Photo by Ed Araquel/AMC)Chester feels confined and complains early on that his parents moved from one island to a smaller island, but he thinks of himself as wholly American with access to all of America, Woo said.“Chester is, for me, an illustration of what it s like to embrace a country that doesn t embrace you back, you know? As we find out in subsequent episodes, his Americanness is challenged,” Woo said. “And so the yūrei represents something that is organically part of the culture of his father s generation, and he has to confront his own Japaneseness in order to deal with it. He has to accept it and then understand it and then find a way to confront it. And that s why we felt that that was an appropriate angle into the supernatural part of the story.”The series also stars Kiki Sukezane as Yuko Tanabe; Shingo Usami and Naoko Mori as Chester’s parents, Henry and Asako Nakayama; and Miki Ishikawa as Amy Yoshida. Casting was done in the U.S., Canada, and Tokyo, resulting in a cast made up of actors from Japan and those of Japanese ancestry. George is arguably the most notable living person who s ever lived with the internment. He s also a working actor in our business. It seems obvious, and natural for us to at least offer him a role in our show. He says he s made it his life s work. He s declared this many times, that this is his life s work: to bring awareness to this period in history because there s so many lessons from that that could be taken from that to the present. To our delight, he agreed enthusiastically to be part of our show, Woo said.“The casting of the rest of the show was a monumental feat by our team of casting directors. We have Carrie Audino here in L.A., and she s won Emmys for Mad Men and West Wing,” he said. “We had Yôko Narahashi in Tokyo, and we had the casting directors in Vancouver as well: Corinne Clark and Jen Page. That entire team scoured four continents to find the cast where — we re very proud of this —every single Japanese and Japanese-American speaking role is portrayed by an actor of Japanese ancestry. So many people had such deep investment in it that we felt we should just cast wall-to-wall with actors of Japanese ancestry, because they brought such an investment to the material.”Woo noted that he is himself of Chinese ancestry and feels connected to the heart of the story: the inevitable rift between a generation that immigrates to a new country that will perhaps never accept them, and their children born in that country who lose pieces of their cultural identity in their assimilation as naturalized citizens.“There are resonances for almost anyone who has a generational connection to having an immigrant experience,” he said. “In this country, frankly, you don t have to go very far back to get to an immigrant in anyone s family. This story, as we came to explore and meet with people and talk with people, is the story of the Japanese-American people, but it s not specifically exclusively a story for the Japanese-American people. There re lessons from this that speak to anyone whose family has been touched or shaped by the immigrant experience, which really is just about everyone.”(Photo by Ed Araquel/AMC)Production designer McKinstry returned to the series from season 1, but other contributors to season 2 are new, including co-costume designers J.R. Hawbaker and Tish Monaghan.“The world really came to life in the costumes,“ Woo said, describing how Hawbaker met with Terminal Islanders and found archival photos of clothing worn during the period to help define each character over the course of several years. “[They] were able to build a world using both vintage pieces and pieces they created.“The kimonos, specifically, which are incredibly labor intensive — it usually takes over a year to build a kimono, and we had to build several of them, and the multiple versions, because you need one for the double, you need one for the stunt person. They get dirty, they get bloody,” he said. “There were these fabrics that J.R. specifically found that had this shimmer to it, this ghostly shimmer to it, which it was really astonishing. … We had an entire kimono team … The kimono wrangler, the kimono designer, the people doing the dyeing. It was its own production; I don t even remember how many people, but it was a large team just to deal with the kimono.”Even with elaborate costuming and exacting production design from another time, Woo wanted the story to come alive for modern viewers. The idea of using a supernatural element to begin with, the idea was to use that genre toolbox as a way for the audience to access the emotions of the historical experience, he said. But I guess we will write as much as we can all week and then the four things we like the most, that’s what we ll do.”But fans of Late Night who have come to enjoy Ruffin (and Hagel’s) commentary in segments like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” should not worry, as she will still be involved with that show.Peacock s other new after-hours series involves bringing back a late-night veteran: Larry Wilmore.
