Even Aegon the Dragon couldn’t conquer the Seven Kingdoms all by himself, Martin wrote. He needed the help of his sisters Rhaenys and Visenya. We won t spoil some of the deaths with too much detail, but if you want that information, you can find more at A Wiki of Ice and Fire. When It Takes PlaceThe Targaryens landed on Dragonstone more than four centuries before the events of the original Game of Thrones series. The Dance of the Dragons was a war of succession fought from 129 to 131 AC — that is, after Aegon I s conquest of Westeros. What’s the Big Conflict? The Targaryen civil war was a conflict over primogeniture, the system of inheritance by a firstborn child; often, the first-born son. A lord’s first child will inherit the castle and lands of his or her father over an older sibling no matter what his or her aptitude for governance compared to a sibling’s abilities. The Targaryens generally followed primogeniture, though there were exceptions, as during the rule of King Jaehaerys I.When King Jaehaerys I s eldest son, Prince Aemon, died, he left a daughter, Rhaenys. King Jaehaerys I then chose his next eldest son, Prince Baelon, to be new Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne rather than bestowing the honor on his granddaughter, a move that even Queen Alysanne disapproved of. When Baelon died unexpectedly — as well as Queen Alysanne and one of their daughters — grief-stricken Jaehaerys convened the Great Council to vote on succession, and the council chose Baelon’s son Viserys instead of Rhaenys’ son Laenor.During his reign, Viserys had named Rhaenyra, his daughter by his first wife, as his heir, but upon Viserys’ death, his eldest son, Aegon, by his second wife instead ascended the throne, causing a great rift in the kingdom. By this time, Rhaenyra was also married to her uncle, the “rogue prince” Daemon Targaryen who had long sought the throne himself.Fire Blood recounts the battles between the siblings, their spouses, their offspring, their loyal followers, and, most viciously, the Targaryen dragons.Who Are the Characters?*confirmedKing Viserys I (103–129 AC)* – his death in early 129 began a great struggle of succession between his eldest child Rhaenyra and his first-born son, Aegon. Viserys’ dragon was especially notable: Balerion, the Black Dread, who King Aegon I Targaryen rode back during the Conquest of Westeros. Born in Valyria, Balerion was the last living dragon to have seen the Freehold, which the Targaryens left 12 years before the Doom. He was black-scaled with black wings and even black fire, which burned so hot that it melted the stone towers of Harrenhal (you saw the ruins in Game of Thrones when Arya Stark served as cupbearer to Tywin Lannister). Balerion died at around 200 years old in 94 AC, less than a year after Prince Viserys claimed him and while the prince was still very young; therefore, it is unlikely that House of the Dragon will show Balerion alive, unless the writers change the story or in flashback.Alicent Hightower* – Viserys I’s second wife whose followers who would see Aegon crowned and were called “the greens” after a green gown the queen wore during a great tourney in which Rhaenyra wore traditional Targaryen black and red.Daemon Targaryen* – Viserys I’s brother, Daemon was mad, bad, and dangerous to know — a skilled warrior and a denizen of disreputable Flea Bottom establishments. Rumored to have taken his teenage niece Rhaenyra’s virginity, he was sent into exile by Viserys. Years later, he would marry Rhaenyra, and upon the death of Viserys, he crowned his own wife, which touched off the bloody civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Dragon: lean, but fearsome red Caraxes, also called “the Blood Wyrm.”Rhaenyra* – Viserys I’s daughter and first-born child by Aemma Arryn, Viserys I s first wife who died in childbirth with her second child, a son, who also died. Rhaenyra was beautiful and beloved by her father and the people and was nicknamed “the Realm s Delight” when she was young. As she grew older, she grew headstrong and competed with her ambitious stepmother Alicent. Her followers were called “the blacks” because of the gown the princess wore on the king and queen’s fifth anniversary tournament. Dragon: young yellow-scaled Syrax.Ser Laenor Velaryon – Married his reluctant cousin Rhaenyra, who remarked to her father, “My half-brothers would be more to his taste.” Dragon: Seasmoke.Rhaenys Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon* – Parents of Laenor Velaryon. She was known as The Queen Who Never Was, because she was passed over as heir to the throne in favor of her uncle. Corlys was known as The Sea Snake, because of his prowess at sea.Harwin Strong (aka Breakbones )* – son of Lord Lyonel Strong and heir to Harrenhal, he was Rhaenyra’s lover while she was married to Laenor.Ser Criston Cole* A member of the Kingsguard, he became embroiled in the Targaryen civil war by switching allegiances from Rhaenyra, for whom he was once sworn shield (and perhaps loved), to Queen Alicent Hightower and her offspring.Princes Jacaerys “Jace,” Lucerys “Luke,” and Joffrey “Joff” Velaryon – Rhaenyra and Laenor’s children, though rumored to have been fathered by Strong because they had dark hair like Strong, while cousins Laenor and Rhaenyra both had the Targaryen light silver/gold hair. The boys dragons were, respectively: Vermax, Arrax, and Tyraxes.King Aegon II (129–131 AC) – Viserys I’s eldest son by Alicent, married his sister. Dragon: Sunfyre, the Golden. Helaena – Aegon II’s sister-wife, had three children with Aegon. Dragon: Dreamfyre.Twins Jaehaera and Jaehaerys and their younger brother Maelor – the offspring of Aegon II and Helaena.Blood and Cheese – hired killers who murdered Jaehaerys in front of his mother, sparking her descent into madness.Mysaria* – a prostitute who served as Daemon’s mistress of whisperers in Flea Bottom. The prince impregnated her, but she lost the child during a voyage to Lys to escape Viserys I’s anger over Daemon’s attempts to give the child a dragon egg, per Targaryen custom.Aegon III (131–157 AC) – the son of Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, he ruled after his uncle Aegon II, and at a very young age, married his cousin Jaehaera, who died young. His rule marked the end of the Dance of Dragons. He had five children by his second wife, Daenaera Velaryon. As a child, he grew melancholy after escaping a naval attack by mounting his dragon, but leaving his brother Viserys behind and believing that he had died. The brothers reunited later in life. Dragon: Stormcloud.Mushroom – a fool in the courts of Viserys I Targaryen, Aegon II Targaryen, Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Aegon III Targaryen. His accounts of his days at court teemed with tales of debauchery and scandal.Dragonseeds – Nettles, Hugh the Hammer, and Ulf the White were purportedly bastard Targaryen offspring. They each claimed dragons and fought for Rhaenyra, though Hugh and Ulf later switched allegiance.Prince Qoren Martell – Dornish ruler who supported the Triarchy (an alliance of the Free Cities of Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh) in a war for the Stepstones against Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lord Corlys Velaryon.Locations We re Likely to SeeMuch of the drama takes place in King s Landing and Dragonstone, but the fighting and bloodshed primarily happens in the Riverlands (led by House Tully at Riverrun). The series history of revealing unexpected core character flaws might also set viewers expectation levels to yellow ― exercise caution ― when it comes to investing in this new player on Fleabag s scene. Plus: Fleabag. It s original and audacious storytelling, Scott says of the series created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a star rapidly ascending with a scene-stealing turn as the voice of robot L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story and as executive producer and creator of award-winning BBC America series Killing Eve. Waller-Bridge was also tapped by Bond himself, Daniel Craig, to inject her distinctive comedic voice into the script of the upcoming film from director Cary Fukunaga.Scott this week also appeared — ranting with a gun — in the first trailer for season 5 of Netflix sci-fi anthology hit Black Mirror. We re eager to find out what delirium awaits us there, but in the meantime, we re savoring his performance in Fleabag season 2, which is reliably unexpected. The season is Certified Fresh at 100% with 43 reviews at publication and is being lauded by critics with lines like: A portrait of grief, fear, and love that s startling, painful, achingly funny, unbearably sexy, pretty much perfect, and somehow better than the first season. It is a marvel. It should not exist. (Allison Shoemaker, RogerEbert.com).We spoke to Scott about these strange, beautiful, tragic, hilarious sketches of humanity and what it was like to inhabit one of them.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)Debbie Day for Rotten Tomatoes: Throughout the season, as a viewer, I think you keep asking yourself, “Is this love or is this insanity?”Scott: I think both those things can exist at the same time. (Laughs). I think a lot of the time, people s experiences of love are exactly that. I think that question, “Is this love or is this insanity?,” can nearly be applied to everything or relationship, because it is insane to go through that experience — it s insane. That s exactly it. As the Priest says in that sermon (in the series): It s this extraordinary thing, it makes you crazy, and makes you do all these things that you never imagined you would be, both good and bad. I think Phoebe s great talent is to be able to hold two things in exactly the same thing. I love the fact that it s funny and tragic at the same time. I like that the idea of being vulnerable and being powerful exists in the same scene. It s all the things it s very fluid, and I think that s why people have responded to it so much, that s what makes such great television, is that feeling of nuance, because the lack of nuance is the death of great art.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)After season 1, I think viewers are hoping for some redemption for Fleabag, and at the beginning of the new season, here s this priest and ― whether you believe or not ― you may hope that she finds something to hold on to, but she chooses the same sort of destructive path.Scott: You think it s destructive?I think she makes another bad choice for herself. You want to believe in love, and you want to believe that people will choose love, but when you get involved with someone who s not really available ―Scott: Yeah.(Photo by Steve Schofield/Amazon Prime)How did you approach your character, seeing this dynamic in the scripts? What did you think of him at first when you read it?Scott: We talked about, when we first spoke about this relationship between the two of them, was how do you play love, and what should we expect from our television characters? And there s not one of us who have not made bad choices ― I e
With a growing sense of awareness in the United States of the prejudices and hate crimes inflicted upon Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders, it’s an interesting time for the premiere of The CW’s Kung Fu.A new take on the martial arts franchise often associated with the David Carradine–starring Western from the 1970s, this version focuses on Olivia Liang’s Nicky Shen. A Chinese American college dropout from San Francisco, Nicky ditches the life her parents had planned for her and ends up practicing martial arts in a Shaolin monastery – until tragedy strikes and she ends up back home just when her family might need her the most.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)In the series, which premieres April 7 and is created by Lost and Hawaii: Five-0 vet Christina M. Kim, Nicky is seen protecting herself and those closest to her with jabs, strikes, spins and kicks while barely breaking a sweat (and sometimes to the surprise of her siblings; Shannon Dang’s tech-wiz Althea and Jon Prasida’s medical student Ryan).“It definitely conflates my own sense of self confidence,” Liang admitted during a recent phone interview with Rotten Tomatoes.“Especially with the things that are happening in the world right now with Asian hate crimes and violence, I find myself walking on the street and being, like, OK what fight choreography did I learn that I can translate if need be at the drop of a hat right now?” she said.Fight training is a relatively new skill set for Liang. Although she has a background in dance, martial arts was a completely new art form for her when she was cast as Nicky. Training began when she was still busy at her previous job on The CW’s Legacies. That Atlanta-set show’s stunt coordinator, David Morizot, showed her basic moves between takes before she worked with stunt coordinator Sam Ly to prep for the Kung Fu pilot. Then it was an aggressive three-to five-hours-a-day schedule for two weeks where “they molded me and they whipped me into shape,” she said.(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Although she’s not allowed to do any of the intense wire work lest she get injured and cause a delay in production, she said, “you can maybe expect to see at least 65% me” on screen during the fight scenes and that “I try to do as much as possible because it s also just really fun and really empowering and I feel really cool when I do it.” But she gives credit to her stunt double, Megan Hui, and others in that department “if I ever look cool and badass and powerful during a fight scene.”The show also both fits in with the other programs on The CW and stands out from them. It’s one of the few options on that channel that concentrates on a woman and is the only one with a predominately AAPI cast. And, although Kung Fu is about a woman crimefighter and counts Arrowverse kingpin Greg Berlanti as one of its executive producers, Liang’s lead doesn’t come with either superhero powers (like The Flash or Supergirl) or – depending on the season of Batwoman family connections or the luck of finding the high-tech suit of a lost vigilante.“I think it s pretty cool that Nicky’s just a regular person who has a skill set and wants to use it for good,” Liang said. “She s not a superhero and she s not necessarily wanting to be a hero, but she is very heroic.”(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)Kung Fu also has the hefty task of demystifying the world of martial arts, an art form that Americans may find alluring and stereotypical when we see it portrayed by people of Asian descent (like in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in Bruce Lee’s films) or as agro when portrayed by white men (like in TV series like Cobra Kai, Arrow, or even the original Kung Fu).“The great thing about our show is the diversity all around that s happening,” Liang said, mentioning the Kim-led diverse writers room in particular and that she and other cast members have been reading Charles Yu’s National Book Award-winning Interior Chinatown, which discusses both immigrant Asian stories and TV’s depiction of them.“I think, because we’ve so long been on the receiving end of this voyeuristic [depiction] of ‘the Orient’ and the mysticism of Asian-ness or otherness, we really know how it feels .. to be under that lens. We know what we don’t want,” Liang said.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)The show also brings up the question of what is a stereotype and what is part of a culture. In the first episode, Nicky is angry that her mother’s (Tan Kheng Hua s Mei-Li) big dream for her was that her daughter attend Harvard. This could be perceived as trumpeting a tired trope, but wouldn’t most parents want their kids to get good grades and go to a respected university?“The interesting thing about stereotypes, from my perspective, is that sometimes they are true,” Liang said, adding that she had “kind of a Tiger Mom growing up [who] did want me to be a genius” and that “I took Abacus lessons for some reason.”“I think the problem with stereotypes is if that s the only thing we know about that person and that s the only thing that they re defined by,” Liang said, explaining that Mei-Li may come across as a Tiger Mom in the first episode, “but we also get to see her backstory and get to see her care for her kids and where she s coming from.”With Nicky, Liang said, “She was the kid who was pressured to go to Harvard and to be everything that her parents wanted her be [but] we also get to see her break out of that. We get to see her forge her own path, fall in love, fight with her siblings. We see a full life; not just the stereotypes.”Kung Fu premieres at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 on The CW.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

urth highest-grossing film of the year, and it certainly has its eye on third place. Second, however, could take a bit of work. Last weekend with an opening that rose above 0 million, the fourth Toy Story was ahead of the third film in the franchise by about million. At the end of this weekend, it is still ahead of Toy Story 3’s pace by about million even if it trails weekend two of part three .3 million to .9 million. Toy Story 3 had a run that did not see a drop of 50 percent until its 13th weekend. Part four dropped 52 percent this weekend, but also had farther to fall. The 2010 chapter fell 46.2 percent and 49 percent in its second and third weekends. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 sits at 6 million domestic and 6 million worldwide; the sixth-highest total of 2019 to date. Of the 14 films to gross between 0-250 million after 10 days, only three of them (The Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Toy Story 3) broke the 0 million domestic mark, but Toy Story 4 remains on track.Fresh Surprise: Yesterday Poised To Be One of Danny Boyle’s Highest Grossers(Photo by Universal Pictures)It may sound surprising to some, but Yesterday actually represents the best opening of director Danny Boyle’s career. Then again, it is only the fourth film in his career — on that has included Transpotting, 127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire — to open wide its first weekend. The last film of his to do that was 28 Days Later back in 2003, and it earned million. The Beach in 2000 was his previous high with .2 million, even if it remains his lowest scored film on the Tomatometer at 20% and just one of two Rotten films (including A Life Less Ordinary) in his filmography. With a 59% rating currently, Yesterday teeters on the edge of Fresh, but Universal is very likely more interested in the film s million start. (The studio partnered with Boyle on 2015’s Steve Jobs, which opened strong in four theaters but ultimately grossed just .7 million total.) Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog is his crowning box office achievement with over 1 million, but it is also just one of three of his films to gross over million. Yesterday will be the fourth. Will the million–budgeted film have enough word-of-mouth to pass The Beach’s million?Top 10 and Beyond: Latest Annabelle Film Lags the First Two(Photo by New Line Cinema)Annabelle Comes Home opened this past Wednesday to .18 million. As of Sunday, it is estimated to have made .2 million, which is relatively low all things considered. Of the previous Wednesday openers that began with million or more, 47 Ronin (.61 million), Rocky Balboa (.85), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (.36), and Magic Mike XXL (.89) were the only ones this century to not have million by Sunday. Annabelle Comes Home is the next-lowest after that with The First Purge coming in at .28 million. The first Annabelle made .11 million in its first five days. Annabelle: Creation made .15 million. They both opened on Fridays. Those other three films grossed million to million domestic. The million production has already grossed over million globally, so it is going to be just fine.Eight of the top 10 films this week are either sequels or remakes. John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum is approaching 0 million worldwide. It is also Keanu Reeves’ third highest–grossing live-action film after the first two Matrix films. Illuminations’ The Secret Life of Pets 2 has not picked up any international steam yet and is only at 8 million worldwide. Its path is similar to that of this summer’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu and is headed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million — or, less than 0 million domestically below the first film. Men in Black International is doing better internationally, but much more poorly here. It is only at 9 million worldwide and still needs another 1 million to break even. The remake of Child’s Play cost 0 million less than MIBI, but is not exactly setting the box office on fire either after dropping 70 percent in its second weekend and stands at million.Far more successful is Paramount’s Rocketman. The million production has made over million domestic and 1 million worldwide — 0 million may be off the table now but it remains on track to exceed million. Disney’s Aladdin has crossed 0 million domestically, and its 4 million globally puts it in 63rd place all-time. It needs another million to break into the top 50.Lastly, we have the Avengers: Endgame record watch. Returning to theaters this weekend with new footage not seen in its first nine weeks, the Marvel title made another .9 million. At .76 billion worldwide, it is now million shy of Avatar’s all-time record. This Time Last Year: Dinos Superheroes Emerge Victorious(Photo by Universal Pictures)Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no challengers and won the box office for a second straight weekend with .9 million. Incredibles 2 also had nothing to threaten its second-place finish with .4 million, bringing its total to over 0 million. The best the week could offer was the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which opened in third with million. Also opening was the basketball comedy, Uncle Drew, which finished fourth with .2 million. The lackluster numbers below that title opened the door for Hindi film Sanju to finish in eighth place with .72 million. The Top 10 totaled 7.20 million and averaged 63% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 5.14 million and averaged 69%.On the Vine: Spider-Man Hopes for Avengers Bump, While Midsommar Chases Critical Acclaim(Photo by Sony Pictures)The next chapter of the MCU arrives when Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Will this film receive the same kind of box office bump that got Iron Man 3 over 0 million as the first one out of the gate after the success of the 2012 Avengers film? It currently has a 91% on the Tomatometer. (Spider-Man: Homecoming has a 92%, opened at 7 million, and went on to make 0 million worldwide.)Then Ari Aster returns with a new horror epic after the praise of last year’s debut, Hereditary, one of the 10 best-reviewed horror films of the decade. Based on the 85% that Midsommar has received so far, Aster (like Jordan Peele) has a shot to own two films on that list. The Full Top 10: June 28-30Toy Story 4 (2019) 97% – .93 million (6.92 million total)Annabelle Comes Home (2019) 65% – .37 million (.20 million total)Yesterday (2019) 63% – million ( million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .34 million (5.86 million total)The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .09 million (1.20 million total)Men in Black: International (2019) 23% – .55 million (.00 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .53 million (1.31 million total)Child's Play (2019) 64% – .27 million (.40 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – .87 million (.17 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .17 million (1.31 million total)
