亚博登录地址采用百度引擎5(Baidu 5)Deadly Class is an ambitious fiction for Syfy to risk airing now, one that asks a viewership shocked by multiple deadly school shootings in recent years to embrace a story about teens trained in the assassination arts – one is a sword wielder, another’s expertise is poison, and so on. It s one of the more twisted coming-of-age stories you ve ever read, filmmaker and producer Joe Russo has said of the graphic novel the series is based on. The Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, co-directors of Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s upcoming Avengers: Endgame, are executive producers on the series.Lana Condor, who so recently charmed Netflix subscribers in high-school rom-com To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, here plays Saya, master of the katana. Condor told Rotten Tomatoes that series creators Remender and Miles Orion Feldsott took pains to ensure that the violence wasn’t gratuitous and wasn’t gun-based.“It s definitely a conversation to have. I think one of the biggest things is, we don t have any guns in our school,” the 21-year-old actress said. “We absolutely do not and are not promoting any sort of gun violence in schools whatsoever … and it s very rare that you see violence between the children. A lot of the violence that comes out of our show is either outside of the school, where they genuinely — our villains are quite horrible people. And that part of the show, it s just a part of television, right?”True. Deadly Class is certainly not the first fiction to put children in peril: You can thank Charles Dickens for that trend. Or the Old Testament if you want to get Biblical about it (see “Binding of Isaac,” Genesis 22).On TV, we’ve seen The Gifted on Fox, Impulse on YouTube Premium, AMC’s The Walking Dead, FX anthology series American Horror Story, and another of this week’s releases, teen-vigilante series Wayne from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writer-producer duo behind the Deadpool films. (Speaking of movies, the X-Men films, The Hunger Games series, and virtually every horror film ever regularly threatened their youngest characters, and that’s just not going to change.)The difference may be that these kids are on the offense and many have very bad intentions. Self-defense is second-nature at King s Dominion, and its student body isn’t made up of fumbling innocents. They are well-trained and lethal, and takes “jaded” to new levels.(Photo by Katie Yu/SYFY)When Rotten Tomatoes recently visited the set, series co-creator Feldsott explained that Master Lin’s (Benedict Wong) great-grandfather founded King’s Dominion as a training ground to help the disenfranchised gain power over their oppressors.“For Master Lin, one of the big journeys that he has over the course of the season is that he is trying to figure out exactly what he stands for,” he said. “Originally, his great-grandfather had a very noble intention when they founded the school. He was going to give power to the oppressed, and now as time as gone on, that mission has been somewhat corrupted, and now these more powerful organizations are giving their kids training at the academy. So he is having a crisis of conscience in the first season. He s having this argument with the teacher that Henry Rollins plays, who s saying, ‘You were different when you were younger. What do you stand for now?’ And there s also a powerful organization that is above Master Lin that expects him to maintain order in this place.”Wong, whose recent role as Wong in Marvel blockbusters Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War has put him in front of massive audiences, credits the Russo Brothers for bringing him to the new character.“I was fortunate to get a call from Joe Russo. He said, ‘Hey, I really want you to be in this, and I just immediately said yes, and then said, ‘What? Sorry, what do you want me to be in then?’ Because the brothers have got an incredible pedigree,” Wong told Rotten Tomatoes.Wong reveals that the influx of criminal organizations have fueled Master Lin s crisis. It’s also important to remember that it’s fiction.“We re in a world that is not like our own world, obviously,” Wong said. “It s a heightened world, and it s more about the repercussions of violence, really, and what would happen. We re in a make-believe world of what would we do if we threw [together] the cartel, the CIA, NASA, and they send their kids to this school, and this man is now having to uphold it all and watch every lid before it flips.”(Photo by Allen Fraser/Syfy)The young Deadly Class cast members are also clearly thrilled with their roles, even if some of the main characters are described as “rats,” including new student Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), who is also an orphan. His lack of connections puts him at a disadvantage; he has no formal fight training like his schoolmates, for one, though his life has been hard.“We re gonna see how violence has affected Marcus,” Wadsworth promised. “He experiences some forms of psychosis. Trauma does weird things to human beings. They find unhealthy coping strategies like alcoholism, chain-smoking, drug-addiction. So I think it would show that, ‘Hey, you probably don t wanna do this or you re gonna get messed up.’”

Writer-director Jordan Peele has avoided the sophomore slump with Us, the critically acclaimed horror follow-up to his Oscar-winning Get Out. According to critics, the movie is a terrifying head f k and like no horror film we ve seen. Ahead of the movie s opening, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with Peele, as well as co-stars Lupita Nyong o and Winston Duke, to talk about why Us stands out from the horror pack, and what Peele is trying to say with his new socially-minded slasher. Plus, all three weigh in on the movie s unique position as major mainstream horror film centered around Black characters – what that means to them as actors and filmmakers as well as to the millions of horror fans who will experience Us when it hits theaters.Us opens in theaters on March 22Thumbnail photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal Like this? Although some studios chose to sit out San Diego Comic-Con this year (like Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros.), one that had a big panel Thursday morning was Paramount. Ostensibly focusing on Terminator: Dark Fate (11/1/2019), Paramount also released the first trailer this morning for another big sequel, next summer s Top Gun: Maverick (6/26/2020).The panel started with a remote introduction from James Cameron, who wasn t actually there, but was calling in from the set of the long-delayed Avatar sequels, joking about how long people have been waiting for those films. Cameron also said about the Avatar sequel technology that  I d love to tell you about what you see behind me, but it s classified. It would take five hours to explain and no one understands the technology anyway. The sort of funny irony about him kicking off the Terminator: Dark Fate panel by talking about the Avatar sequels is that they re now Disney movies, following the 20th Century Fox acquisition, so Paramount was basically using some of their Hall H time to promote another studio s big movies. Oops.(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As for Dark Fate, there were two big reveals on top of what we already know from the first trailer and other stories. First, it was confirmed that Terminator: Dark Fate will be rated R, which will be the first time since 2003 s Terminator: Rise of the Machines. Both Terminator: Salvation and Terminator: Genisys had PG-13 ratings, but that didn t seem to make much difference at the box office in any case, so perhaps the thought is that, like the Die Hard franchise, for example, the Terminator movies are really best-suited to feature R-rated violence (and language occasionally too). There was also a surprise casting announcement marking the return of one of the stars of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. With returning stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger both in attendance, we learned that after skipping the last three Terminator movies, Edward Furlong will also be returning as John Connor, whose future importance was originally what got this whole franchise going. Having said that, it s not that the character of John Connor himself has been absent from the franchise. Nick Stahl played the role in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Christian Bale played him in Terminator: Salvation, and Jason Clarke took over the role in Terminator: Genisys. The funny thing is, none of those four actors even really look like each other. Are we sure there aren t four different John Connors from four different timelines?(Photo by Paramount Pictures)As for Top Gun: Maverick, the trailer makes it very clear that this is a Tom Cruise movie. Although the film features an ensemble cast on paper (including actors like Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, and the return of Val Kilmer as Iceman), Cruise s presence dominates the trailer, even if  Ed Harris speaks most of the actual dialogue and gets a pretty great line to boot. The other focus, obviously, is on the fighter jets (this is a Top Gun movie after all), which is interesting, considering the film s premise had been described, once upon a time, as focusing on drone pilots. It s certainly possible that the modern Navy s emphasis on drones is still a big part of the story. We ll find out when the long-in-development Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters next summer, on June 26, 2020 (up against Lin-Manuel Miranda s musical Into the Heights).亚博登录地址spirit of the holidays. It premieres on Lifetime on December 1.As part of an overall deal with Lisa Ling, HBO Max has greenlit Ling’s travel docu-series Birth, Wedding, Funeral, which will take viewers to a new country in each episode, and immerse them in that country’s culture and customs. The concept for the series was created by iconic newsman Dan Rather, who serves as an executive producer. And yet another series announcement from HBO Max, which is set to launch in spring 2020: The Ho’s, a docu-series about Binh and Hue Ho, who immigrated to the United States from Vietnam with little money and have built a multi-million dollar bank and real estate empire. The series will follow their family life in Houston – including son Washington Ho and his kids, named Lincoln and Roosevelt – in what is described as a real-life Crazy Rich Asians–like story.Like this? Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like The Eternals, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Tomb Raider 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYSHAZAM! SEQUEL ALREADY IN THE WORKS (Photo by Warner Bros.)The DC Comics movie Shazam! has only been in theaters for a week, and a sequel is already in development. Shazam! opened much lower ( million domestically) than similar movies like Aquaman (.8 million) and Captain Marvel (3 million), but its 0 million budget was also (presumably) lower than those films. Screenwriter Henry Gayden, who wrote Shazam!, will also return to write its sequel. We don t know the premise of the sequel yet, but the mid-credits tease gave us a clue about the possible villain. One has to guess that the Shazam! sequel will probably also tie in to the long-planned Black Adam movie, and this week, that film s star revealed via an Instagram video that Black Adam will likely start filming sometime in 2020.Fresh Developments1. STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER TRAILER REVELATIONS After months of waiting, we finally learned the title of Star Wars Episode IX via the first teaser trailer, which revealed that the ninth episode s title will be Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That last word is a curious choice, given what we seemed to learn at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but it s possible that Skywalker in the context of the final installment of the nine-film saga could mean something other than a family name. In the teaser trailer, we see the return of two familiar faces: Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian and the late Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa. Although the teaser trailer appeared on various sources instantaneously, the official location of the reveal was at a panel at this weekend s Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, which you can watch here.  We also hear the voice of Mark Hamill narrating as Luke Skywalker, and at the end of the teaser, what appears to be this actor s sinister laugh.  Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled for December 20, 2019. You can read our full trailer breakdown here.2. THIS WEEK IN MARVEL PART 1: THE ETERNALS, BLACK WIDOW, SHANG-CHI (Photo by Marvel Studios)As often happens nowadays, there were several stories this week related to Marvel movies, but in the interest of saving time, we re going to bundle together into just two Weekly Ketchup entries. Let s start with next year s The Eternals, for which Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) is now in talks for a role. We don t have any idea what character Nanjiani might play, except that he s the second name attached to The Eternals, after Angelina Jolie from a few weeks back. The other movie that Marvel Studios is filming this year is Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow solo movie, and O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid s Tale) is now in talks for an unknown role. Fagbenle is the fourth new actor in talks for Black Widow after Florence Pugh, David Harbour (Hellboy), and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite). There was also news this week of a deal between Marvel Studios and the government of Australia for a subsidy for the filming of an upcoming movie, which people are speculating will be Shang-Chi (AKA Master of Kung-Fu).3. THIS WEEK IN MARVEL PART 2: FIVE YEAR PLAN POST-AVENGERS: ENDGAME  (Photo by Marvel Studios)We know that Black Widow and The Eternals are the next two films Marvel Studios is shooting, and that they are also developing films for Shang-Chi and Ms. Marvel, as well as the sequels Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (plus, presumably, Captain Marvel will probably get a sequel too). That, however, is only eight films, and this week we learned that Kevin Feige is saying that they have a five-year plan, which, given Marvel s recent three-movies-a-year schedule, means they re going to come up a bit short. It s possible that Marvel Studios is including their recent acquisition of Deadpool, Fantastic Four, and X-Men from Fox, but Feige seems to be saying that the five-year plan comes first. We also probably won t get official announcements of this plan until after this summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home. In the meantime, we also learned this week of Jeremy Renner starring in a Hawkeye series for the Disney+ app, plus confirmation of the Disney+ shows WandaVision, Loki, Falcon and Winter Soldier, and the animated What If? You can read about all of the Disney+ updates in our roundup here.4. OSCAR-WINNING BLACK PANTHER COSTUMER TAPPED FOR COMING TO AMERICA 2(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Marvel s Black Panther won three Academy Awards this year for Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design. That last Oscar went to Ruth E. Carter, whose film work has also included Amistad, Selma, and several of  Spike Lee s joints, including Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X. On Black Panther, Carter adapted the comic book costumes of the royalty of Wakanda, the citizens of Wakanda, and the related tribal leaders, and now she s going to give us the attire of another fictional African nation. Ruth E. Carter will be the costume designer of the long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy s Coming to America, which is scheduled for August 7, 2020, the week after Sony/Marvel s vampire movie Morbius, starring Jared Leto.5. CAMILA CABELLO TO STAR IN JAMES CORDEN S TAKE ON CINDERELLA (Photo by Steve Mack/Everett Collection)It was just four years ago that Disney released their live action remake of their classic animated film Cinderella. This week we learned that Sony Pictures is now developing their own take on the tale that is based on a story idea from late night host James Corden. The star of Sony s Cinderella will be singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, who will also be involved with the film s music (and the movie will be more of a musical than Disney s 2015 version). Sony s Cinderella musical will be written and directed by Kay Cannon, who made her feature film debut last year with Blockers (Certified Fresh at 84%).6. DAVE BAUTISTA JOINS ZACK SNYDER S ZOMBIE MOVIE ARMY OF THE DEAD (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Dwayne Johnson is still the busiest wrester-turned-actor right now, but Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista is getting close. In addition to his likely appearance in Avengers: Endgame, Bautista will also star in Stuber (7/12/2019), My Spy (TBA 2019), Escape Plan: The Extractors (TBA 2019/2020), and as Glossu Rabban in the Dune remake (11/20/2020). In addition to those five films, Bautista signed on to two more this week. The first one we heard about this week was Army of the Dead, the zombie heist movie that Zack Snyder will be directing for Netflix. Although Snyder did earn a Certified Fresh 75% for his previous zombie movie, Dawn of the Dead, his last four movies have all received Rotten Tomatometer scores. Meanwhile, Bautista is also attached to star in an action/thriller called Killer s Game for STXfilms and D.J. Caruso, who is likewise coming off a five-film Rotten Tomatometer streak.Rotten Ideas3. KEN JEONG TO VOICE DYNOMUTT IN SCOOB (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)A few weeks ago, we learned that the beloved animated character Captain Caveman will be making his feature film debut next year in Scoob (5/15/2020). Tracy Morgan will be voicing Captain Caveman, and the main Mystery Inc. gang will be voiced by Zac Efron (Fred), Amanda Seyfried (Daphne), Gina Rodriguez (Velma), Will Forte (Shaggy), and Frank Welker (Scooby). This week, we learned that Captain Caveman won t be the only classic 1970s character making his debut in Scoob, as Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Crazy Rich Asians) will be voicing Dynomutt, the co-star of The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour from 1976 to 1977. Kiersey Clemons (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) has also joined the voice cast as Dee Dee Skyes, one of Captain Caveman s Teen Angels, who were basically a Saturday morning cartoon spoof of the popular Charlie s Angels primetime series.2. TOMB RAIDER GETTING A SEQUEL AFTER ALL (Photo by Warner Bros.)When the Tomb Raider reboot opened in second place last year under the box office juggernaut that was Black Panther, many pundits probably presumed that the would-be franchise for Tomb Raider would be a non-starter. And critically, like most video game adaptations, the Alicia Vikander version of Tomb Raider also received a Rotten Tomatometer score of 52%. As it turns out, neither of those details is holding back Lara Croft s cinematic future, as MGM is now developing a sequel. Possibly hoping to increase the chances of a Fresh score, MGM has hired screenwriter Amy Jump, whose Tomatometer is mostly Certified Fresh, with her one Rotten score for High-Rise being just one point off at 59%. But considering the history of video game adaptations and the lackluster first film, the Tomb Raider sequel will have a pretty steep hill to climb.1. TELL ME MORE, TELL ME MORE, SUMMER LOVING SOUNDS LIKE A DRAG (Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)By 1978 standards, Grease was a fun, nostalgic musical and a favorite for two different generations. By other standards, the lyrics of some of the songs (like, say, Greased Lightning ) have not aged well at all. One such example is Summer Nights, the lyrics of which include what seem like references to attempted sexual assault (or at least a tell me more inquiry about one). So, obviously, a major movie studio would never consider developing a Grease prequel in 2019 called Summer Loving, right? Of course they would, and they are. Frequent Tim Burton collaborator John August has been hired by Paramount Pictures to work on the prequel, which will show how greaser Danny Zuko first met Australian exchange student Sandy Olsson on the beach during summer vacation. John August s next film will be next month s Aladdin (5/24/2019), and he also worked on Guillermo del Toro s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (8/9/2019).Like this? 8.38.2 9月喜迎I m very proud of my movie, Nebraska. I don t really know what a great film is. I don t know what the ingredients should be. But I certainly think Nebraska is a credit to the industry of filmmaking and it s done very, very well. And both he [director Alexander Payne] and Quentin [Tarantino, with whom Dern has worked three times] can make a f king movie, trust me. Alexander said to me the first morning, Do you see anything here, you ve never seen before? I went looking around – we were in Nebraska in some little town in the middle of October, cold, freezing – and I said, Yes I do. I said, It seems like everybody here is putting their oar in before 8am. And he said, Well hopefully, that s because we have 91 crew members here and 78 have worked every day on every film I ve ever made. He put his hand on my shoulder and he said, So you, sir, can go take a risk. And he said, This is Phedon Papamichael; he s your cameraman. I met him the day before. And he said, I wonder if you d do something for Phedon and I, that we re not sure you ever did in your career. I said, Well what s that? And he said, Never show us anything. Let us find it. And I knew for the first time in my life I had a partner.Al Pacino came up to me I d never met him at a party and said, You know, I ve not seen your movie yet, Nebraska. But everybody back at the Actors Studio – cause we re both members – is talking about your performance. So Brad Grey is at the party, and he ran Paramount then, and I said, You know, Al Pacino has not got a screener, cause it was Christmas time. So he said, Tell him he ll have one tomorrow morning with his newspaper. At noon the next day my phone rings and I pick it up and he says, Bruce, Al Pacino. I said, Oh wow. He said nothing for about 10 seconds, and then he said, How did you do that? I told him what Alexander told me about “let us find it.” And he said, I have tears in my eyes, because you knew you had a partner. I ve never had a partner. He said, Bruce, I never ever saw the work. You were just the character. And that s the greatest compliment to me I ever had.
(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Several years ago, Rotten Tomatoes tracked the location of the Infinity Stones going into Avengers: Infinity War. At the time, the big mystery was the location of the Soul Stone, which turned out to be a big plot point in the film. But three years later, the stones are gone. As revealed in Avengers: Endgame, Thanos (Josh Brolin) used their power to unmake them, forcing the Avengers into committing a Time Heist to reverse the effects of the Blip.Nevertheless, the Stones continue to exist thanks to variant timelines and that Multiverse that Marvel keeps teasing. And though Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) returned each Stone to the places in history from which the Avengers borrowed them – and their story is seemingly concluded – they may continue to prove relevant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly as the new Disney+ Loki series features the variant of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who spirited away the Space Stone in Endgame. So, join us on a journey across time and possibility to track the Infinity Stones The Time Stone(Photo by Jay Maidment / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: Presumably, in the hands of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) on the rooftop of the Sanctum Sanctorum.Where It Could Be Now: Although “our” Time Stone is still gone, the loss of it from within the Eye of Agamotto may play a role in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Will Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) convince himself he can safely take a copy of the Time Stone from another reality or timeline? Maybe that choice sets off the adventure as the dark future the Ancient One teased in Endgame comes to pass. Also, trying to break the laws of time feels like the sort of thing Strange would do, even if it means he’d have to talk an alternate version of himself into doing it.The Space Stone(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: Back at Camp Lehigh, the S.S.R./S.H.I.E.L.D. base in the 1970 where Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is somehow tolerating the presence of Howard Stark (John Slattery).Where It Could Be Now: The Stone he returned is only one variant – which Mar-Vell (Annette Benning) will use a decade or so later. The other, as we mentioned above, was nabbed by Loki during the Avengers’ botched attempt to get it just after the Battle of New York. And as we saw as we saw in April s Loki trailer, it is in the possession of a TVA agent when Loki is arrested. That leaves one to wonder if the Stone will be in their evidence locker or if they have a way to return it to Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) custody in that alternate timeline. Will it continue to be a part of Loki s overall scheme? Or will his experience with the TVA lead him down a path away from the Infinity Stones? Also, wouldn’t Steve feel honor-bound to retrieve the Space Stone from Loki and put it back in its proper place? The Soul Stone(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: The planet Vormir, where he presumably had a very awkward conversation with the Red Skull (Ross Marquand).Where It Could Be Now: Still on Vormir, as it requires a steep price to claim it. Although, the return of the Soul Stone brings us back to our favorite pet theory about the upcoming Black Widow movie. Specifically, returning the Stone will release Natasha Romanoff (Scarlet Johansson) from the Soul Space – a scene that could make a very satisfying mid-credit stinger. With rumors that Evans will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some form swirling around, this is the sort of cameo we can see him agreeing to.The Power Stone(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: On Morag for Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) to discover while nursing a massive headache.Where It Could Be Now: The return of the Power Stone to its proper place in time is seemingly the most successful of the lot as it means the Peter Quill of that timeline will collect it and proceed through the events of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies being none-the-wiser. Unless, of course, his reality now lacks for a Thanos, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Black Order – all of whom traveled into the future during Endgame. If that is the case, then the Stone is presumably still on Xandar under the protection of the Nova Corps.Provided, of course, the Guardians of the Galaxy came into existence to defeat Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace). Otherwise, he maybe rampaging across space in some variant timeline. The Mind Stone(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: Next to an unconscious America’s Ass (also Evans) in Stark Tower shortly after the Battle of New York.Where It Could Be Now: The location of the Mind Stone in that other timeline could be important in the future as it needs to pass into Wolgang von Strucker’s (Thomas Kretschmann) possession not long after the battle. If it doesn’t, then that timeline goes without Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) unlocking an aspect of her powers, Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) never getting his speed, and J.A.R.V.I.S. (Paul Bettany) never becoming a part of Vision (also Bettany). Such a timeline could offer “our Wanda” a source for a proper Mind Stone to give Vision back all his facilities. Well, once she learns about that corpse-like Vision flying around New Jersey. The Reality Stone(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Where Steve Left It: Somehow, injected back into Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) shortly after Thor and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) took it. Maybe Frigga (Rene Russo) helped out knowing Steve was a friend of her son?Where It Could Be Now: Presuming this alternate timeline is the same one Thanos was in before he leaped to the future, then the Stone would still be in the possession of The Collector (Benicio del Toro). But as we pointed out with some regularity in our coverage of WandaVision, the red energy Wanda wields visually connects to the Aether and it would not surprise us if the source of the Scarlett Witch’s power stems from the same primordial force contained in the Reality Stone. What that means for Wandas in realities where Thanos never collected the Stones – or even our own Wanda – remains to be seen.Of course, as the nature of the Marvel Multiverse is still unknown, we are making a lot of presumptions about where the Stones Steve returned could be. For one thing: we are assuming the Stones were mostly picked from one alternate timeline despite the Ancient One telling Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) that stealing them would create divergent timelines at each point from which they were taken. If we take her at her word, then it is possible War Machine’s (Don Cheadle) decision to knock Peter out on Morag means the Guardians of the Galaxy never form and either Ronan or Ego (Kurt Russell) succeed in their plan. Also, the Ancient One’s reality may have been swallowed up by Dormammu even if Steve returned the Time Stone to her. The mere seconds it was gone still could matter. But one of the elements we’re looking forward to in Loki is a greater clarity about what it means to pluck a Stone from its rightful place in time. Perhaps we’ll even get greater clarity on the success of Steve’s mission to return them at the end of Endgame or, perhaps, we ll learn of a new power tempting the god of mischief away from his old objectives.Loki premieres on Disney+ Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Parasite director Bong Joon-ho s path to Oscar glory began at the Cannes Film Festival last year. (Photo by Dominique Charriau/WireImage)At this stage, the Cannes International Film Festival has been postponed, while Venice and Toronto have yet to make any official call. The unpredictability Fear references makes it all the more challenging for freelancers to determine which films to cater their pitches to for the rest of the year.IndieWire’s Kohn echoed those concerns: “The festival usually would create buzz around a film in part because of the live event of a screening, hearing a crowd react to something, and seeing a Q A. And the kind of word-of-mouth in that very specific environment is something you can t replicate online. For certain films, it s just not going to have the same kind of impact.”At the same time, he sees online festivals as an opportunity for critics to jump on coverage for smaller movies that may have otherwise fallen under the radar at a major festival. “If you re a journalist and you re interested in writing about a movie that was supposed to have a premiere, that coverage has so much more currency than it used to,” Kohn says. “It s actually a real opportunity for people who are looking to cover films.”As President of the Chicago Film Critics Association, Tallerico has first-hand experience of making the call to cancel or delay a festival. “I actually produce a film festival in Chicago called the Chicago Critics Film Festival every May, and [this year] we had to pull the plug, of course,” Tallerico says. “Festivals feed the industry, they feed both industries, the film industry and the journalism industry. It definitely hurts that they re gone.”Today s production shutdowns will impact tomorrow s opportunities for critics and writersWhile film releases have been delayed theatrically or pushed to VOD, the television industry continues to churn out content at the moment. Physical production is universally halted, but episodes and/or seasons produced in advance of COVID-19–related shutdowns are rolling out on broadcast and streaming platforms. (Post-production continues remotely in many cases.)Several editors told us that critics well-versed in film coverage should attempt to exercise their TV-reviewing muscles for the time being. But even the TV and streaming content will slow down at some point. In addition to being an editor at RogerEbert.com, Tallerico freelances and is well-versed in television coverage. He predicts that, come summertime, the content drought will be even more deeply felt. “I think places like Netflix and Hulu and all them are going to empty the hopper and then have nothing to put in there because nothing has been produced,” Tallerico says.In short, some critics anticipate dry spells in content, depending upon how long the need for social distancing persists.Production for The CW s Riverdale was shut down in March after a crew member tested positive for the virus. Later that month, several major networks and upcoming blockbusters also halted production. (Photo by Katie Yu/The CW -- © 2020)Jean Bentley is a freelance television reporter for The Hollywood Reporter and InStyle, and former Assistant TV Editor for Rotten Tomatoes. According to Bentley, it’s “business as usual” for television reporters and critics – right now. “I have not really been impacted as much as reporters who cover film because all of those theatrical releases that have been pushed has not happened with TV,” she says. However, she predicts that, when things go back to normal, production scheduling will present major challenges to creatives who may newly be double-booked.“If someone was supposed to be shooting something now and then, say, production resumes in three months – they were already supposed to be doing something else, so now there s a conflict there that they didn t have before,” Bentley says. “I think it s going to result in more [shows] being canceled or just not picked up. Pilot season essentially got canceled and it doesn t seem like a smart proposition to me personally to do it at all, to be quite honest.”Rolling Stone’s Fear foresees similar challenges for film scheduling, as films whose production was shut down will not be finished in time for their original release deadlines. “There are going to be a bunch of holes that are going to be filled, too, because a film that was supposed to be done with its post-production in April, and then be ready for an August or November or a February slot, is not done,” Fear says. The challenge of tone when circumstances keep changingThere are also more nuanced adjustments required during a global pandemic. It’s not only that schedules are in flux and content is unpredictable, both of which impact print publications acutely because of the rigidness of press deadlines. But there’s also an interpersonal and emotional awareness of the ways that people are coping with the new “normal” in the wake of COVID-19, shelter-in-place, and stay-at-home orders.Bilge Ebiri is a movie critic at Vulture. In addition to producing online content, from reviews to feature stories and essays, Ebiri is involved in the print production for New York Magazine, which operates vulture.com. He spoke to the challenges of preparing print content weeks in advance, when global circumstances are changing by the day.“If you re doing it for online, that s one thing, but a lot of what I try to do is work with the print issue,” Ebiri says. “There is this question, when you re in a situation where every day is worse than the previous day: Where are we going to be two weeks from now? Trying to imagine what life is going to be like two weeks from now is already daunting…. If we have some kind of fun, frivolous, inane kind of thing to take people s minds off, in two weeks, this is going to look totally tone deaf.”Inkoo Kang, TV critic at The Hollywood Reporter, described a similar recognition when speaking of an article that she’d pitched before things really took a turn. “There was a review that I was passionate about, but also knew it was sort of this weird, more personal work – a trends piece, essentially, that I think was something that I knew was a little bit more on the frivolous side,” Kang says. “Then suddenly, it seems so incredibly stupid, because it just did not feel like it mattered, compared to everything else that was happening.”She adds: “It was just one of those things where, I don t know, 48 weeks out of the year, this could have been a viable thing to do a commentary piece about. Now people are dying, and the economy is in the toilet. It just did not feel like it mattered on any level.”

The Top Ten and Beyond: Abominable, Ad Astra, Rambo: Last Blood Struggling(Photo by Universal Pictures)Last week’s #1 family offering, Abominable, dropped 41.8% to second place this week with million. With .8 million total after ten days, that puts it between 1998’s Antz (.6 million) and 2012’s Rise of the Guardians (.4 million). Those films legged out to .7 and 3.4 million totals, respectively. Abominable will instead close out similarly to The Lego Ninjago Movie with a final estimate between -65 million. That s well behind Smallfoot’s million last year. The film has only made an additional .3 million overseas so far which is not great for the million production and is likely to become Universal’s first red mark since Little in April. As mentioned, It Chapter Two joined the ranks of the 0 million club this weekend with its m pick-up. In other pending milestone news, Hustlers has the 11th best total for a September release after 24 days, earning m this weekend, and is headed for somewhere around 5-110 million. Downton Abbey may be out of range to join the 0 million club, with million this weekend, but it is primed to best the million grossed by Brokeback Mountain to become Focus Features’ all-time domestic grosser.  Roadside’s Judy with Renee Zellweger jumped from 461 theaters to 1,458, grossing .4 million. In less promising news, Fox’s Ad Astra has just about hit the wall in North America with a million weekend, and is limping its way to million. The film would still need another 8 million to break even based on its most conservative cost estimates. Rambo: Last Blood is not doing much better, but also cost less. With million worldwide, after a million domestic gain this weekend, the film still needs around another million to get into the black. This Time Last Year: Venom s Big Wind-Turdlin Debut!(Photo by Columbia / courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, October kicked off with the biggest top ten haul of all-time this month. Similarly, it also kicked off with a big comic book spinoff – albeit from Marvel – as Venom opened to the biggest October weekend of all time with .2 million. But hold on: Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born opened as well. Even though it finished second with a strong .9 million it would go on to outgross Venom: 5 million versus 3m. The Fathom event broadcast of the Met Opera Aida actually grossed enough on just Saturday night to finish tenth overall with .18 million. On the Vine: A Family of Addams, A Sassy Siri, A Parasite A Tale of Two Will Smiths(Photo by Paramount Pictures / courtesy Everett Collection)The best chance to unseat Joker next weekend rides with not one, but two Will Smiths in Ang Lee sci-fi actioner, Gemini Man. Meanwhile, United Artists does not appear to be expecting great notices for their animated version of The Addams Family. It has been 28 years since the last live-action version of the television theaters hit theaters. The Hangover writers and Bad Moms directors, Jon Lucas Scott Moore, will try to pull off a wacky version of Spike Jonze’s Her with the Adam Devine-starring Jexi.  Otherwise, you ll find Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite opening in limited release next week. The Full Top 10: October 4–6Joker (2019) 68% – .50 million (.50 million total)Abominable (2019) 82% – .00 million (.83 million total)Downton Abbey (2019) 84% – .00 million (.62 million total)Hustlers (2019) 87% – .30 million (.32 million total)It: Chapter Two (2019) 62% – .35 million (2.20 million total)Ad Astra (2019) 83% –  .1554 million (.66 million total)Judy (2019) 82% –  .44 million (.90 million total)Rambo: Last Blood (2019) 26% – .55 million (.82 million total)War (2019) 69% – .58 million (.08 million total)Good Boys (2019) 80% – $

(Photo by Apple)Netflix, Amazon, and now Hulu have both become synonymous with prestige TV, but there s one giant tech company not far behind the two streaming services — at least in theory. In the past year, Apple has made moves to compete with Netflix, Hulu, and premium cable channels (like HBO and Showtime) for the peak TV crown in 2019.With more TV series — and places to watch them — than ever, Apple is putting a reported billion toward adding to the peak TV pile. While the company began its foray into scripted series with two current shows offered through Apple Music — the tech-themed Shark Tank–esque reality competition Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke: The Series — the competition really ramped up when it hired veteran TV executives Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht in June 2017. The duo formerly ran Sony Pictures Television, the studio that brought the world Breaking Bad and The Crown.Van Amburg and Erlicht have engaged in aggressive bidding wars for some of TV s hottest projects, according to a New York Times report, and will likely surpass its reported budget in doing so. With more than a dozen projects currently in the works, it s clear the company is ready to spend money to compete with TV s current titans. (Planet of the Apps, which featured guest judges including Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba, didn t get much critical acclaim when it debuted in June 2017. Carpool Karaoke: The Series, a spin-off of James Corden s popular Late Late Show segment, has been ordered for a second season.)(Photo by Apple)Apple held a star-studded launch event at its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters in March to announce its new streaming product and original series offerings. Stars including Steven Spielberg, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, Jason Momoa, Alfre Woodard, J.J. Abrams, Sara Bareilles, and even Big Bird were present for the Apple TV+ presentation. The service is scheduled to roll out its programming on Nov. 1.RELATED: Everything To Know About Apple TV+ Below, we ve rounded up a list of all the titles that are headed to or intended for the tech giant. Some are in development, while the others are series orders (and have even completed filming). Read on to find out who the players are and more about the shows.UPDATED (9/11/19): Apple s latest event revealed pricing and launch date information for Apple TV+. Check out the updated list of everything we know below, including which shows will debut at launch, which are coming soon, and which are still in the works.Launching Nov. 1The Morning Show(Photo by Apple TV+)Talent: Witherspoon and Aniston are both set to star in and executive produce the drama, which was one of the first scripted series Apple announced. While Jay Carson (House of Cards) was originally signed on to write the project, he has since departed and Bates Motel boss Kerry Ehrin took over. Steve Carell will play the male lead. What it s about: The morning show drama has already been ordered for two seasons and 20 episodes and will draw background from Brian Stelter s book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: With the star power and bona fides of Big Little Lies star and producer Witherspoon and Friends vet Aniston, plus the creative power of Ehrin, it s almost too big to fail. Then again, the drama surrounding Carson s departure is never a good sign (Photo by Apple TV+)Talent: Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard star in the series, which was written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and directed by Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games). What it s about: The show is set in a post-apocalyptic future where the human race has lost the sense of sight.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Momoa is a fan-favorite star, and with such high-caliber talent attached, this could go very, very well. (But since it s got such an ambitious plot, there s also plenty of opportunity for things to go very, very wrong. For All Mankind(Photo by Apple)Talent: Battlestar Galactica and Outlander creator Ronald D. Moore has teamed up with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi (Fargo) for the still-untitled series. What it s about: The drama, which has been ordered straight to series, explores what would have happened if the global space race had never ended.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Between BSG and Outlander, Moore certainly has both the cred and the goods to assume he ll deliver on this one, too.Dickinson(Photo by Apple)Talent: Hailee Steinfeld and Jane Krakowski are set to star as young poet Emily Dickinson and her mother, respectively. What it’s about: The series is a half-hour comedy that “is set during Emily Dickinson’s era with a modern sensibility and tone. It takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of a budding writer who doesn’t fit in to her own time through her imaginative point of view,” per Deadline.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: The star power is great, but the series logline is a little out there. We’ll have to wait and see to reserve judgement.Helpsters(Photo by Apple)Talent: Sesame Workshop is producing the series, which was announced at the Apple event by none other than Big Bird. What it s about: The preschool-targeted series will be an educational program about coding.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: If Sesame Street can continue educating children a half a century after its original launch, there s no reason to believe this new series won t work.Snoopy in Space/Peanuts STEM Series(Photo by Courtesy of DHX Media)Talent: Charlie Brown, Lucy, Pigpen, Snoopy — you know, all your favorites from Charles M. Schulz s Peanuts gang — will be the focus of this new series. What it s about: The first series from Apple s deal acquiring the rights to the famous characters will be a science- and math-oriented short featuring Snoopy as an astronaut. This and other new originals with be produced with DHX Media, a Canadian production company that owns a large portion of children s content, also including Yo Gabba Gabba! and the Teletubbies.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: You can t really go wrong with such beloved characters.Ghostwriter(Photo by Apple TV+)Talent: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran Brett DaltonWhat it s about: According to the official description, this is a reinvention of the classic 90s children s series following four kids who are brought together by a mysterious ghost in a neighborhood bookstore, and must team up to release fictional characters from works of literature. Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: While beloved to a very small group of people who grew up in the 1990s, the series doesn t necessarily have much recognition outside that circle. We ll have to wait until it debuts to find out whether the concept transfers to a new generation.Launching SoonM. Night Shyamalan Thriller, Servant(Photo by Apple)Talent: M. Night Shyamalan is executive producing and will direct the first episode of this series, from writer Tony Basgallop. What it s about: As if the king of big twists would reveal anything about his psychological thriller! Good to note: The first season will consist of 10 half-hour episodes and has been ordered straight to series.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: This one, like Shayamalan s movies, depends on execution. Will it be a Sixth Sense or a Lady in the Water? Only time will tell.Truth Be Told(Photo by Apple)Talent: Octavia Spencer is set to star in the drama, which is produced by Reese Witherspoon, created and written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife, Justified), and based on true-crime novel by Kathleen Barber. Sarah Koenig, creator of the podcast phenomenon Serial, is consulting. Aaron Paul plays the male lead. What it s about: Truth Be Told (formerly, Are You Sleeping ) provides a unique glimpse into America’s obsession with true-crime podcasts and challenges its viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is placed on a public stage. Spencer plays a disgraced journalist who returns to her hometown and revisits a case in which she played a pivotal role in her early career. Paul plays a man Spencer s character helped put behind bars — but he could potentially be innocent of the crime.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: There s a reason true-crime stories are so engrossing, and if this series can capture the source of that fascination, then it should thrive.Little America(Photo by Apple)Talent: Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the husband-and-wife team behind indie hit The Big Sick, are developing this series for Apple. What it s about: The anthology series is based on Epic Magazine s series of the same name, described as a small, collective portrait of America s immigrants — and thereby a portrait of America itself. Nanjiani announced at the Apple TV+ launch that the scripted series is being made solely by immigrants or children of immigrants, and will focus on everyday people.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Given the tender eye and charm

Potterheads, rejoice! A Harry Potter series is in the works. Probably. Maybe. Same with an animated Game Of Thrones spin-off. Vikings: Valhalla and Sandman castings announced and more of the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYWhat Took So Long? Harry Potter and His Hogwarts Friends May Be Headed to Streaming(Photo by Warner Bros.)The only true surprise about Harry Potter finding his way to television is that it’s taken this long. HBO Max executives are on the search for writers to craft a pitch for a series that would send the boy wizard and his friends to the streaming service, THR.com reports.Bringing an adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s wildly successful seven-book, eight-movie series to TV is in the “extremely early stages,” according to the report, with no cast attached. HBO Max and Warner Bros. issued a statement denying a TV project is in the works, but THR sources say several discussions have taken place to develop a series. The Potter movies have earned more than billion worldwide, and, despite recent controversial comments by Rowling that many consider transphobic, the property remains a hugely popular one, from amusement park tie-ins to the Fantastic Beasts prequel movies.Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser Teaming for Apple TV+ Prison Drama(Photo by Giles Keyte. TM and copyright ©20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved/courtesy Everett Collection.)Stellar cast and writer, fascinating (and true) story: Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser will star in an adaptation of the book In With the Devil – about a prisoner who’s offered the chance for release if he can get a fellow prisoner to confess to being a serial killer – penned by Dennis Lehane. The six-part series is based on the 2010 novel In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, written by James Keene and Hillel Levin. Keene’s personal experience, as an inmate offered freedom for getting a suspected killer to confess, is the story of the book.Egerton, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John in the biopic Rocketman, would play the Keene role, with, presumably, Richard Jewel star Hauser playing the alleged serial killer.Lehane, the novelist who has also written for The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and The Outsider, will write and executive produce the limited series. Egerton will also be an EP on the project, and Berlin Station director Michael Roskam will direct the miniseries.Better Call Saul, Ted Lasso, The Mandalorian Among AFI’s Best TV Shows of 2020(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. 亚博登录地址 e Hard is not, in fact, a Christmas movie, and arguing about the distinction has become just as much a yearly tradition. With all of that in mind, we present to you both sides of the argument one from an RT staffer who believes Die Hard should be considered a Christmas movie, and one from an RT staffer who doesn t and ask you to help us settle the debate once and for all. So, is Die Hard a Christmas movie?Yippie-Ki-Yay!(Photo by 20th Century Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Die Hard is a Christmas movie like a stocking is a present: The packaging is different, and some years it hangs nowhere near the tree, but that makes it no less part of the tradition. The gift of Die Hard is that it gives everyone a kick-ass movie to register your disgust (whether genuine or facetious) at the overbearing supremacy of December 25th. What other holiday comes with as much stress or as many marching orders? They give us songs about white Christmases and snow; this movie sets up among palm trees and a steel skyscraper. They speak of hope and goodwill; Die Hard delivers hard-nosed cynicism and explosions. For most, Christmas is about coming together with family. For everyone else, Christmas is about going somewhere you don t want to be, stuck in a building with people you can t escape essentially the plot of Die Hard. This is a machine gun pressed against the status quo, necessary more than ever now that modern American society has devolved Christmas into a political battleground. It boils down to this: America need a movie to push back the baggage of the holidays. It could ve been Lethal Weapon. It could ve been Tangerine. Hell, it could ve been Edward Scissorhands. But it wasn t them. You know why? Because when you re in need of the right movie at the wrong time, you need yippie-ki-yayin John McClane.Yippie-Ki-Nay!(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)There are a few things that should qualify a film as a Christmas movie, but the most commonly accepted distinction demands that the holiday play a central role in the plot. Even on this most basic requirement, Die Hard fails  while it certainly takes place on Christmas Eve, the date is entirely incidental to the plot. The holiday party could easily have been replaced by any number of work-related celebrations, and John McClane could have been making the trip from Philly to L.A. for any number of family-related reasons. It didn t have to be Christmas Eve, because literally none of the significant plot developments in the story would need to be changed if it took place during any other time of the year. If that s not enough, what about the spirit of the holiday? Christmastime should be a celebration of family and friends, a time for joy and uplift and peace and love. But no, let s go ahead and watch greedy terrorists (yeah, I know, Who said we were terrorists? ) blow people s brains out, and then watch a wise-ass cop wreak righteous, bloody vengeance upon them. Oh yeah, that feels like Christmas. If you need more convincing, consider that Die Hard opened on July 20. That s right, July it was more summer blockbuster than holiday film, and its marketing reflected that.Look, at the end of the day, is Die Hard one of the best action films ever made? Hell yes. But is it a Christmas movie? No, no it is not. And if you don t believe me, ask Bruce Willis himself, or, you know, the 62% of the population who agree with me.

David E. Talbert’s lavish and energetic new musical, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, might just be a modern Christmas classic. The story of a toymaker (Forest Whitaker) and his granddaughter’s (Madalen Mills) quest to recover his most incredible creation yet, after it’s stolen by a rival (Keegan Michael-Key), is full of elaborate musical numbers, heartwarming holiday moments, and songs from the likes of John Legend; critics are eating it up and saying it could go down as a new holiday staple. Ahead of the movie’s release, Rotten Tomatoes Editor Jacqueline Coley spoke to Talbert and stars Whitaker, Key, Mills, Phylicia Rashad, and Anika Noni Rose to ask why music and Christmas are such a perfect pairing, how the cast and crew produced the film’s ambitious musical set pieces, and to discover their personal favorites when it comes to holiday movies.Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is available on Netflix from Friday, November 13, 2020. On an Apple device? They are beloved, but do critics actually think they’re any good? While Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars are often cited as series that impacted critics’ formative years and have high Tomatometer ratings, others are dismissed as nothing but guilty pleasures. Then along come titles like Freeform s Cruel Summer, which is Fresh at 90% on the Tomatometer; Shadow and Bone, which is Fresh at 87% and comes from streamer Netflix; and The CW’s hit Riverdale.Rotten Tomatoes has gathered the scores of these and many others in the genre to determine which show wins the title of best-reviewed teen drama. Where the Tomatometer scores are tied, we ve listed those with the higher number of reviews higher on the list to reflect that more critics weighed in, and then alphabetically for those that have the same score and the same number of reviews. There are several series listed with a 100% Tomatometer score, for example, but Recovery Road has only six reviews for its first, and only, season and is therefore ranked at the bottom of that section.A number of teen dramas like Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson s Creek, The Wonder Years, and The Vampire Diaries/Originals spin-off Legacies currently do not have enough Tomatometer-eligible reviews across their seasons to receive a series-level score. We will update this list if and when such titles receive a score.Disagree with the results? Tell us in the comments which series you think should have been ranked higher (or lower).

(Photo by Christopher Polk/Getty Images)Typically this time of year, the awards season begins to take shape, and while we have new glimmers of hope courtesy of One Night in Miami and Nomadland, many niggling questions remain unanswered. Which films are in contention? Will theaters be open in time to screen contenders? Will the current films on the calendar hold their dates? In truth, the entire season is in jeopardy, depending on how you look at it, with so many questions still left unanswered after most of the major film festivals have concluded. On the precipice of an unprecedented season, we thought we would kick off our awards coverage with a detailed breakdown of what we know and what we don t about the 2020-2021 season.A Disruption in the Timeline(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Earlier this year, the Academy announced that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they would be pushing back the deadlines and ceremony date for Oscars 2021. The show, which will air live on ABC Sunday, April 25, 2021, was originally scheduled for February 28, 2021. Coinciding with the Oscars celebration, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, initially scheduled to open to the public on December 14, 2020, will open on April 30, 2021.With this change, the Academy also announced that the eligibility period will extend to February 28th, 2021. The extension was made in the hopes of giving theaters more time to return to normal, but as the COVID-19 crisis continues, the chances of that happening are rapidly dwindling. Other awards contests like the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and Independent Spirits have followed suit and moved to later dates, which line up with Oscar season, though most of the major critic groups, like the NYFCC and LAFCA, have chosen to keep a calendar year eligibility. The Oscars have also removed the theatrical screening requirement, allowing for VOD releases to compete if they were intended for a theatrical run. The extension is a significant change but should have little effect on which films are in contention, but the VOD option may usher in quite a few non-traditional Oscar hopefuls. Be sure to bookmark our 2020-2021 awards calendar if you want to keep up to date on all the award show changes. The Netflix Season(Photo by Netflix)As digital screenings will be the way this year, many are dubbing it the Netflix Season. As the streaming giant is not beholden to traditional box office considerations they are the studio best equipped to navigate these uncertain times, and their awards slate is quite ambitious. Netflix recently picked up the Best Actress contender Pieces of A Woman, starring Vanessa Kirby, as well as Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s quarantine-filmed Malcolm Marie, adding the pair to their already crowded roster of nearly 20 films set to compete in 2021.Previously released films like Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and I’m Thinking of Ending Things are very much in the thick of contention for several categories, and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Radha Blank’s Sundance winner The Forty-Year-Old Version are scheduled to hit the platform soon. Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy, David Fincher’s Mank, and George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky are in post-production and remain undated, but pundits are banking that they will bring the goods. A-list casts acting in “awards-friendly” source material is precisely what Oscar voters love. However, with a handful of strong candidates and no need to consider box office viability, Netflix can carefully plot out their release calendar to drum up timely buzz as often as possible. The recent tragic death of Chadwick Boseman will likely have a significant impact on the release of Viola Davis’ Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but the August Wilson adaptation is still expected to join the titles mentioned above in what will likely be a Netflix vs. Netflix race in several categories. In short, Netflix is in the driver s seat this year with the most competitive titles and release date flexibility, so it might be a foregone conclusion that they will be the big winner on Oscar night no matter what happens next.A New Campaign Playbook(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)This year s Emmys taught us that the typical campaign strategy playbook has been thrown out the window. The glitzy Hollywood parties and cocktail mixers will likely be completely absent from the season with a few exceptions. Also, with limited theatrical/drive-in releases, the post-screening Q As that typically drive ticket sales and buzz are also not possible.More importantly, though, the festival calendar has been nearly removed from the equation entirely. The Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival, normally critical for a film s long-term chances, have been able to proceed with virtual screenings and drive-in events, but the typical post-premiere buzz that is generated was decidedly muted. That buzz only affects audience interest in the films, but it also marshals the attention of voters, something that will be difficult to command given the limitations of COVID-19.After they were forced to cancel their yearly event, the Telluride Film Festival put on a large A-list drive-in event to premiere Nomadland simultaneously with Venice and TIFF. Venice continued with the scaled-down slate, but each festival s place as a key piece of the awards landscape has been considerably affected. Awards strategists and studios, therefore, have been relying on virtual events and catered meals sent directly to industry professionals and voters as a way to keep their films top of the mind.Big Budget Exodus Creates an Indie Lover s Paradise (Photo by Chiabella James/Warner Bros. Entertainment)A few days ago, Disney announced an adjustment to their film calendar, shortly after Universal and Warner Brothers had done the same: West Side Story, The French Dispatch, Candyman, and A Quiet Place II all vacated their dates. Currently, the only viable big-budget awards options still on the calendar are Dune and Disney s animated musical Soul, both of which are still expected to hit theaters. However, the chances of that are still in question as theaters are still largely closed in New York and Los Angeles. This lack of studio options could set up an indies first season, which would be an interesting turn of events after films like Joker, Black Panther, Mad Max: Fury Road, Bohemian Rhapsody, and 1917 brought blockbusters to the Best Picture race in recent years.Though many may lament the lack of studio releases, there s an equally vocal contingent that s celebrating the chance to have a true indie season. This year s Oscars may closely mirror the season s penultimate event, the Independent Spirit Awards. There are only a handful of films left on the schedule with budgets over million, but there is a legitimate chance they all could still vacate their dates. This may be the first time in recent memory without a single big-budget Best Picture nominee.(Photo by Plan B Entertainment)Despite the pandemic, 2021 has already seen a promising crop of Oscar-worthy films, but most films in contention this year had to forego a traditional theatrical release to go straight to VOD.  Sundance favorites like Minari, The 40-year Old Version, and The Father have not been released yet but are almost certainly contenders. Small indie releases like Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Assistant, Miss Juneteenth, and First Cow could battle it out against fall releases like Nomadland and One Night in Miami, giving multiple films from female directors a chance to pull nominations. And those are just the dated titles. Ma Rainey s Black Bottom, Mank, Promising Young Woman, The French Dispatch, and Pieces of a Woman are all on several Oscar shortlists, though we still don t know if they will release in time for this year s contest. On the studio side, Disney s Soul and Dune are the most likely options for a big-budget Best Picture nominee, but the chances both stay the course and release as scheduled is still very much in the air. It is very reasonable to think that Dune, Wonder Woman 1984, and Soul will all follow the lead of No Time to Die, which very recently fled 2020 for an April, 2021 release, in which case the indies will undoubtedly dominate in most of the major categories. Will It Happen?Ryan FujitaniThough it is the most unlikely scenario, there is a question about whether or not the season will actually happen. Yes, that would be extreme, but let s break it down. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is a non-profit organization chiefly dedicated to honoring, preserving, and helping shepherd the art of motion pictures. The organization s biggest fundraiser to help achieve that mission is the fees they earn from their contract with ABC to broadcast the Oscars; the Academy earns the majority of its operating budget from this one event. So in that respect, the Academy s true top priority is not film preservation but keeping ABC happy and the ratings high so that they don t lose their biggest revenue source. This is not a cynical statement, just a cold hard fact. That fact was also partially the motivation for things like the recent membership changes, the telecast, and the ill-conceived Popular Film Oscar. With a pricey new Academy museum currently under construction and awards show ratings in steady decline, the Academy is acutely aware that relevance is important. If the Oscars cease to be a premiere advertising event, their contract will not be as valuable, or worse, they could lose it altogether. This is a reason to hold the show no matter what, but if the lack of marquee names and big-budget hits leads to lackluster viewership, the results could be catastrophic for their revenue prospects. If they don t proceed with the season, it would certainly be damaging, but the Board of Governors who run the Academy might decide that skipping a year and coming back strong would be a better bet.The Emmys double-digit decrease in viewership for their socially distant ceremony last month was also a worrying sign, but coupled with the Oscars 20% decrease in viewership from 2018 to 2019, it s hard to imagine there s any scenario that won t see a significant audience drop-off. If that s likely to happen, the case can be made just to bite the bullet and put on a variety show to celebrate the Academy and push the competitive ceremony to 2022. For this, they would have to pool all eligible films from both 2020 and 2021. Admittedly this sounds far-fetched, but if we see a rise in COVID-19 cases, lockdowns, and production issues, we may end up with the same number of eligible films during that two-year time period. Moreover, if theaters are still shuttered and studios are still holding films, 2021 may look more like 2020, and if it does, will the show go on?In end, the decision lies with the Board of Governors, and if they believe that their revenue, relevancy, or brand will be severely damaged by a limited season, they might vote to pull out altogether. This is the nuclear option and the least likely, but it wouldn t be the first time that the Academy has had to back off on a plan. Let s not forget the Popular Oscar was a real thing until it wasn t.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
