Director Chad Stahelski has spent most of that time working on the John Wick franchise, including next year s John Wick: Chapter 4 (5/27/2022), but this week, we learned of a new project. Following the critical and box office successes of Pokemon Detective Pikachu (Fresh at 67%) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), Hollywood is increasingly looking at other video game adaptations, and so Chad Stahelski is now attached to direct Sony Pictures Ghost of Tsushima, based on the popular 2020 samurai video game. Ghost of Tsushima now joins a slate of video game adaptations that Sony Pictures has in the works that includes Uncharted (2/11/2022) starring Tom Holland, Metal Gear Solid starring Oscar Isaac, and The Last of Us as a series for HBO Max. Other projects that Stahelski is developing include a Highlander reboot and the John Wick spinoff Ballerina.Other Top Headlines1. THE SUICIDE SQUAD TRAILER REVEALS JAWS-SIZED SYLVESTER STALLONE ROLE (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The arrival last week of Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 73%) seems to have put an end-of-sentence period on one part of the DC Extended Universe as Warner Bros. prepares to move on to other movies like The Flash (11/4/2022) and this year s The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), which ended up being directed by James Gunn following a brief kerfuffle over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2018. Warner Bros. quickly swooped in and nabbed Gunn, and this week, the first (red band) trailer The Suicide Squad debuted online. In addition to all of these cool character posters and the reveal of Starro as the movie s main super villain threat, we also now know that King Shark will be voiced by Sylvester Stallone, who had a brief cameo in Gunn s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The timing of this trailer comes just days after WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff confirmed that there are no plans to revisit David Ayer s Suicide Squad (reportedly Ayer s original take was darker in tone than the released edit) in a way similar to Zack Snyder s Justice League, and also that there are no plans to #RestoreTheSynderVerse either. Finally, speaking of DC Comics movies that aren t going to happen, Joe Manganiello confirmed this week that the solo Ben Affleck Batman movie, if it had happened, would not only have featured him as the anti-hero Deathstroke, but would also have introduced a new Batgirl as Batman s sidekick.2. PIERCE BROSNAN CAST AS DC COMICS SORCERER DOCTOR FATE IN BLACK ADAM (Photo by Jonathan Prime/©Universal Studios)Going as far back as the 1940s, when Aquaman was introduced two years after Marvel s Sub-Mariner was a big hit first, DC Comics and Marvel Comics have had competing characters with similar powers or names (The Atom vs Ant-Man, Wonder Woman vs Wonder Man, Swamp Thing vs Man-Thing, etc.). Marvel fans all know Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange now, but that mystical character s introduction in 1963 actually came 23 years after DC Comics similarly named sorcerer, Doctor Fate. Doctor Fate was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, which is going to be introduced to the big screen soon in Dwayne Johnson s Black Adam, and this week, we learned that Doctor Fate s human alter ego Kent Nelson will be played by former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan. This makes Brosnan the second Bond to join a DC Comics project after Timothy Dalton, who plays the Chief in HBO s Doom Patrol. Brosnan s fellow JSA members will include Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Black Adam has faced a number of filming delays in the last few years (most recently due to COVID-19, obviously), but Dwayne Johnson posted an update this week that filming is expected to start in three weeks.3. MAGICAL DC COMCS SUPERHERO ZATANNA IS ALSO A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Doctor Fate wasn t the only magical DC Comics superhero to make the news this week. Just last week, an investor day image revealed that Warner Bros. was developing a Zatanna movie, and this week, the project was officially confirmed in a proper fashion, with a surprising choice that probably caught many people pleasantly off guard. Director and screenwriter Emerald Fennel (who s also known as an actress for her role as Camilla Parker-Bowles on Netflix s The Crown) currently has three Academy Award nominations (for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture) for her feature film directorial debut Promising Young Woman (Certified Fresh at 90%). Studios often swoop in on Oscar winners after the fact, but the particularly astute ones make these moves before the awards are handed out, and that s what Warner Bros. and Bad Robot have done by hiring Emerald Fennell to adapt their magical superhero movie Zatanna. First introduced in the comics in 1964, Zatanna is a long-time member of the Justice League of America who casts spells by saying what she wants to happen backwards (for example, Stnap Ruoy Pord Namtab! might be embarassing for Bruce Wayne), but Zatanna has never been depicted in a live-action film. It s not yet known if Fennell will also direct Zatanna, or if she might even star as Zatanna or another supporting character.4. DAME HELEN MIRREN TO TAKE ON VILLAIN ROLE IN SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)One of the high points of Dame Helen Mirren s early film career was her portrayal of the evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay in Excalibur (Certified Fresh at 80%), and now, 40 years later, she has signed on to play another magical villain. In a somewhat unusual move, the role that Mirren will be playing in the upcoming sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023) does not appear to be directly lifted from any of the 70 years of actual Shazam comic books. Instead, the villain Hespera appears to be a new creation, although she is described as being the daughter of Atlas, who is the first A of the anagram Shazam that gives Billy Batson his powers (the stamina of Atlas, specifically). It s not yet known if Atlas or any of the other characters in the anagram will also appear in the sequel. Something that is curious about Hespera being described as the main villain in Shazam: Fury of the Gods, however, is that it differs from the teaser at the end of Shazam!, which suggested that the next major villain would be Mister Mind.5. SALLY HAWKINS AND STEVE COOGAN TO FIND THE LOST KING (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the most surprising history-based news stories of the last ten years was arguably the 2012 discovery of the bones of King Richard III under a parking lot in England. Now, the true story of how that all went down is being adapted as a comedy drama called The Lost King, to be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, Philomena). This week, Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) signed on to play the historian who discovered the remains, with Steve Coogan playing her husband (and also co-writing the screenplay). Hawkins is also currently filming the Princess Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, in which she is expected to be portraying a fictional or composite character (although most of the cast are indeed based on real people).6. SETH ROGEN TO PLAY STEVEN SPIELBERG S FAVORITE UNCLE (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we first learned that Steven Spielberg will soon be directing an unusually biographical film about his life as a child and teenager in Arizona falling in love with the art of filmmaking. Michelle Williams was announced right away as being cast as Spielberg s mother, and this week, another member of the director s movie family has also been cast. Seth Rogen, who previously starred alongside Williams in Take This Waltz (Certified Fresh at 79%), has been cast to play Spielberg s favorite uncle in the currently untitled drama. Spielberg and his casting agents are currently searching for the young actors to play the young Spielberg (who won t be named Steven in the movie) and his friends in 1950s and 1960s Arizona. The drama is expected to start filming on location this summer and be finished in time for a late 2022 release (about a year after Spielberg s West Side Story remake on 12/10/2021).7. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN AFGHANISTAN WAR TRUE STORY COMBAT CONTROL (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Although Netflix seems to have received more media attention over the last few years as a major winner of film auctions, according to Deadline, MGM has taken over that position since the beginning of 2021, and the old school studio continued that aggressive stance this week by winning another hotly sought film rights package. MGM is in final talks to acquire the rights to Combat Control, a war drama to be based on the true story of Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman of the United States Air Force. Jake Gyllenhaal will star as Chapman, who received a posthumous Medal of Honor for his role as a combat controller in Afghanistan in 2002, with the film focusing on the 15 years it took for Chapman s commendation to be upgraded to the Medal of Honor, making him the first airman to receive the medal since the Vietnam War.8. TV SHOW BEWITCHED TO GET A SECOND NOSE WIGGLE (Photo by Everett Collection)Hollywood has been regularly adapting old TV shows into movies since the 1980s (Dragnet was an early example). The results haven t always been great, though, such as the 2005 movie Bewitched (Rotten at 24%), starring Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman, based on the popular 1960s show. What s less common is for a studio to actually make a second attempt at adapting such a show after the first movie has disappointing returns, but that is exactly what Sony Pictures is doing with Bewitched. Sony Pictures has hired TV showrunners Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (MacGyver, 12 Monkeys) to start working on a new Bewitched feature film screenplay. Rather than the meta approach of the Will Ferrell movie, this Bewitched is expected to be a closer adaptation of the original show s premise of a witch who settles into suburban domesticity after falling in love with a non-magical advertising executive. Between Zatanna at Warner Bros. and Bewitched at Sony, one has to guess that WandaVision (Fresh at 91%) is having an immediate influence.9. RAMPAGE DIRECTOR TO ADAPT ANOTHER VIDEO GAME WITH SNIPER ELITE(Photo by James Atoa/Everett Collection)Ghost of Tsushima was not the only video game adaptation to make the news this week. Brad Peyton, who has directed Dwayne Johnson three times in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 49%) and the old school arcade game movie Rampage (Rotten at 51%), signed on for another video game adaptation this week. That project will be adapted from the World War II third-person shooter Sniper Elite, a franchise whose latest entry, a supernatural spin-off sequel called Zombie Army 4: Dead War, released just last year. The Sniper Elite movie will tell the story of Allied sniper Karl Fairburne, who engages in a cat-and-mouse chase through the streets of London at the height of the Blitz during World War II, as he tries to save British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from a Nazi assassin. Sniper Elite is being produced by one of the Ubisoft executives who was also behind the Assassin s Creed (Rotten at 18%) movie starring Michael Fassbender. On an Apple device? As we inch closer to the beginning of the summer movie season, we are starting to see a few more big-name properties show up on the release calendar, and March features not only a hotly anticipated sequel to a surprise horror hit, but also a new entry from Pixar and the latest live-action remake of an animated Disney classic. Beyond those titles, we also have a comic book adaptation starring Vin Diesel and a new interpretation of a Jane Austen novel just to round things out. See below for the most anticipated movies opening in March.1. A Quiet Place Part II (2021) 91%2,769 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens March 20Director John Krasinski had a hit on his hands with 2018 s A Quiet Place, in which he starred alongside his real-life wife Emily Blunt as a married couple with two children (after a tragic and horrifying opening scene) who live their lives in complete silence in an attempt to avoid detection by the bloodthirsty monsters who navigate by sound that have taken over the world. This month, we get the sequel, which finds Blunt s Evelyn Abbott traveling with son Marcus (Noah Jupe), daughter Regan (Millicent Simmonds), and her newborn infant until they come across other survivors and discover there s more to worry about than just the monsters. This film made it to the top of all of our social media polls and racked up the second-most Want-to-See votes among all March releases.2. Mulan (2020) 73%3,650 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Facebook and Twitter fans, #3 pick by our Instagram fansOpens March 27Disney released three live-action remakes of their classic animated films in 2019 namely Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King and while none of them exactly set critics hearts aflutter, the latter two especially made big splashes at the box office. With that context in mind, March brings us their latest effort, Mulan, starring Liu Yufei as the titular heroine who defies her father s wishes and joins the Imperial Chinese Army disguised as a man to represent her family. The supporting cast includes such renowned actors as Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Gong Li, and fans on our social media accounts were excited enough about the movie to vote it into second place on Facebook and Twitter, and third place on Instagram. It also racked up the most Want-to-See votes of any March release on RT.3. Onward (2020) 88%1,252 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Instagram fans, #4 pick by our Facebook and Twitter fansOpens March 6Part of Mulan s appeal is undeniably the nostalgia factor for adults who remember seeing the animated original more than 20 years ago, but Disney offshoot Pixar is also coming out with a new animated film that s ostensibly aimed at younger audiences but plays on some mature themes. MCU stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland voice two elf brothers who live in a suburban fantasy world populated by trash unicorns and pet dragons where technology has pushed magic into obsolescence. When the two of them receive a magical gift from their deceased father that will allow them to resurrect him for 24 hours, and it only summons his lower half, they embark on a journey to find a way to bring back the rest of him before time runs out. This one made it into the top five of all of our social polls and garnered the third-most Want-to-See votes on RT, and on top of all that, it s already Certified Fresh.4. Bloodshot (2020) 30%1,099 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Facebook and Twitter fansOpens March 13The vast majority of superhero movies made these days belong to either the MCU or the DCEU, but the landscape is slowly changing as other players join the fray. Enter Bloodshot, a murdered soldier who is resurrected by scientists and given superhuman abilities thanks to nanotechnology. The Valiant Comics anti-hero is played by Vin Diesel here, and reports have stated that the film is intended to be the first in its own cinematic universe. We ll have to wait and see how that goes after the film is released, but for now, moviegoers are looking forward to seeing the big-screen adaptation of the comic, as it ranked third in our Facebook and Twitter polls.5. EMMA. (2020) 87%1,391 Want-to-See Votes#5 pick by our Facebook fansOpens Wide March 6The last film on this month s list actually opened in limited release back on February 21, but it s expanding wide in the first week of March, thanks to a positive reception. Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Jane Austen s eponymous matchmaker, who discovers that maybe she s not as good at bringing people together as she thought she was, all while her own romance bubbles up and takes her by surprise. Director Autumn de Wilde s debut feature is already Certified Fresh, and critics say it s a whimsical adaptation that takes some time to get going but blossoms into a delightful treat. The film made it to fifth place in our Facebook poll and earned the fourth-most Want-to-See votes on RT.Thumnail image by Paramount PicturesLike this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Adjusted Score: 49454% Critics Consensus: Nicole Kidman's poised performance provides some measure of reclamation for Martha Gellhorn, but this trite historical melodrama reduces Ernest Hemingway and the era that the two war correspondents lived through into a broad caricature. Synopsis: Writer Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) begins a romance with fellow scribe Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman).... Army Of The Dead (2021) #2 on Facebook and Twitter, #3 on InstagramPremiering on Netflix on May 21Continuing on the horror trend well, in a way, but we ll get to that is director Zack Snyder s return to the zombie genre where he got his start. Though it bears no relation to Dawn of the Dead, Snyder s directorial debut remake of the George Romero classic, Army of the Dead does feature a horde of zombies descending upon a ragtag group of survivors. Only thing is, these particular survivors happen to be a band of mercenaries who have intentionally entered zombie territory  an infested Las Vegas in order to pull off a casino heist while the world s attention is focused on the walking dead. In other words, this may fit more under Action than Horror, but either way, it could be a lot of fun.
H.G. Wells’ serialized novel The War of the Worlds was first published in the late 19th century, telling the story of a Martian invasion and attempted extermination of our planet after the English writer had already delivered The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The Island of Dr. Moreau. Wells’ works have been adapted several times in several different formats over the last 90 years, but never as memorably or successfully as the repeated attempts to breathe life into this timeless allegory. There was Orson Welles’ infamous 1938 radio broadcast, which panicked a nation and later inspired the backstory for Buckaroo Banzai, and Byron Haskin’s 1953 film is considered one of the seminal science-fiction films of its era. But in 2005, Steven Spielberg re-teamed with his Minority Report star Tom Cruise to offer a modern take on War of the Worlds, one that represented the culmination of the director s shift away from the idealist who once encouraged his audiences to watch the skies. On its 15th anniversary, we look back at what made War of the Worlds so effective, how it fits in Spielberg s filmography, and why it might actually be his most terrifying film.A GRADUAL PERSPECTIVE SHIFT(Photo by Universal Pictures)As early as 1964, when a 17-year-old Spielberg made a 0, 140-minute film called Firelight, his view towards the night skies (as well as life in general) represented more of a hopeful outlook than a cynical one. (He once questioned the screenplay of Used Cars for suggesting that politicians were in it just for the grift.) 1977 s Close Encounters of the Third Kind isn t exactly a glowing endorsement of fatherhood, but it ultimately concludes on an optimistic note, and in 1982 s beloved E.T., the greatest threat comes not from space or its alien visitor, but from humanity itself.Spielberg really began to embrace the darker elements of science fiction first in 1993 s Jurassic Park and its immediate sequel, both cautionary tales of human arrogance, and then in Stanley Kubrick’s long-gestating A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, which he took over upon Kubrick s death. In the latter film, David the robot undergoes a harrowing journey in his search to become human that culminates in a touching but melancholy scene set after the extinction of humanity. Spielberg s follow-up the very next year, the Philip K. Dick adaptation Minority Report, then presented a world in which literal thought police are in charge and abusing their power in Washington D.C. Still, all of those films feel like a prelude to War of the Worlds, which drops all pretense, pulls out all the stops, and delivers a pulse-pounding survival thriller set into motion by the arrival of a deadly, relentless enemy from the skies. Gone are the days of Close Encounters  musical tones of peace and the healing power of E.T. s glowing finger, replaced by darker themes inspired by real life events.THE UNOFFICIAL  9/11 TRILOGY (Photo by (c)DreamWorks, (c)Paramount, (c)Universal courtesy Everett Collection)While Spielberg never formally gave them a name the way fellow directors like John Carpenter (The Thing, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness = The Apocalypse Trilogy) or Oliver Stone (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven Earth = The Vietnam Trilogy) did with their own work, his three films from 2004 and 2005 trade in common themes and fears stemming from the attacks on US landmarks on September 11, 2001. The Terminal from 2004 is often dismissed as a whimsical Capra-esque vehicle for Tom Hanks, but it s also a fable about the trepidation of outsiders entering our country. Stanley Tucci’s customs director even attempts to make Hanks trapped immigrant admit that he is afraid of his home country in exchange for passage to ours. At the end of 2005, Spielberg directly tackled the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. That film’s government-sponsored revenge unit epitomizes the never-ending violence-begets-violence message, justifying its supposed righteousness with misinformation, and Spielberg ends the film with the less than subtle final image of the still-standing twin towers of the World Trade Center. In between The Terminal and Munich came War of the Worlds, which might not seem at first glance to be an obvious thematic fit, despite its heavily allegorical source material. But when Dakota Fanning s young Rachel asks Is it the terrorists? as she ducks for cover in the back of a van and her brother Robbie (Justin Chatwin) echoes the question moments later, it draws a straight line to the events of 9/11, and the references don t stop there. The alien enemy of the film emerges with weapons buried within Earth itself, like a terrorist cell waiting in hiding for the moment to strike. As Tom Cruise s Ray seeks shelter for himself and his kids at his ex-wife s home, a passenger plane comes crashing down into the neighborhood. Spielberg isn t dabbling in shameless exploitation, though; he never asks us to marvel at the special effects or  ooh and ahh as buildings are leveled the way we whooped and guffawed through Independence Day. When Ray returns home after the initial attack, the realization that the ash on his face belongs to the disintegrated people he ran through pulls him out of shock into a moment of panic, and it s equally terrifying for the audience, for both its literal and figurative significance.ABSENT SAVIORS(Photo by (c)Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)Spielberg’s relationship with his own parents particularly his father is well documented in his filmography and further fleshed out in Susan Lacy’s 2017 HBO documentary. Understandably, in War of the Worlds, Cruise’s Ray is not exactly the father figure his estranged children need in their time of distress. At the beginning of the film, he s a divorced deadbeat dad who doesn t know what to do with the limited time he gets with his kids when they arrive for the weekend, leaving Rachel to order her own food and watch TV while he sleeps; Robbie, who insists on calling Ray by his first name out of spite, seizes the opportunity to take his dad s car out for a spin. When they make their daring escape from the city later, Ray also appears to be unaware of his daughter’s claustrophobia or her peanut butter allergy. Father of the Year material he is not, but he s the only hope his children have for salvation.Meanwhile, their fellow humans begin to grow desperate, turning on one another in the tradition of everything from Night of the Living Dead to The Mist. The darker religious connotations of the latter have a more pointed role in 1953 s The War of the Worlds. One priest is martyred early in the film for attempting communication with the Martians, but when they attack the church where a group of survivors have gathered to sing and pray during the film s climax, they meet their downfall, as if by divine intervention. By contrast, in Spielberg’s version, a church is the first major building to suffer destruction from the enemy as they emerge from underground. God is pushed out of the way right at the onset, resulting in one less reason for the helpless to look to the sky.SPIELBERG S MOST TERRIFYING FILMThis may be a controversial claim, given that Steven Spielberg is responsible for two of the all-time most popular terror rides (Jaws and Jurassic Park) and at least an assist on a third (Poltergeist, which he produced and co-wrote), but it s certainly worthy of debate. He drops us in the water and then traps us on the Orca in Jaws  never let anyone tell you this is not a horror film but the whole affair is splashed with a great deal of adventure. Jurassic Park s velociraptors, dilophosauruses, and T-Rex can hunt and chase you down both out in the open and in a kitchen, but the experience is also filled with the benign wonder of the first dino sighting, along with a sick triceratops and a sneezy brachiosaurus.War of the Worlds has no iconic John Williams theme that you can play over a loudspeaker and feel a sense of euphoric warmth; the music is as eerie and menacing as the aliens’ call-to-arms (a seven-trumpets-like signal that would later be repurposed for humor in Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping). Spielberg never lets his foot off the gas, even when Ray and his kids are only walking or hiding. Moments that feel appropriated from his earlier works find fresh life here, most notably the cat-and-mouse game played with an alien tentacle in a basement that recalls the kitchen scene from Jurassic Park as well as the mechanical spiders in Minority Report. There s even a subtle nod to Spielberg s Poltergeist screenplay when Ray reassures Rachel that lightning never strikes in the same place twice. In between, Spielberg dreams up new nightmares, from a dead body floating in a stream that s soon followed by hundreds more to a flaming train that blazes past Ray and the kids as they make their way to a ferry with a massive crowd of fellow refugees. The ill-fated ferry ride itself is a horrifying set-piece well beyond the nightmares of Sheriff Brody, Jaws heroic lawman, who also never had to decide whether to save his kids by killing Mayor Vaughn, whose crimes against humanity were far greater than just making too much noise, like Tim Robbins Harlan. The throwaway moment of a blood bank announcing that they have more blood than we can use is alternately ominous and reassuring, but paired with the sight of an alien tripod harvesting a human being and spewing their blood across the landscape, it offers little comfort. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.CONTEMPORARY RELEVANCE(Photo by Paramount Pictures)War of the Worlds is usually not regarded with the same deference as Spielberg’s other timeless blockbusters, but it may surprise some to learn that it is still Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing domestic film with over 4 million at the box office. The ending remains a point of contention for critics of the film, and some still can t forgive the climactic resurrection of one character. But like many films, its reputation has changed with the times, and the one we are living through now, on the film s 15th anniversary, is its own reflective nightmare. Today, a mass gathering of sardine-packed crowds is a bad omen, but H.G. Wells himself indirectly predicted what it might take for us to come to our senses, and Spielberg s film expands on the notion. The die is cast early with Rachel’s splinter; Ray warns her it will get infected if he does not remove it, but she calmly states that when it’s ready, my body will just push it out. As the film ends and Morgan Freeman s voice is heard explaining its ultimate deus ex machina, we are left with these words: “From the moment the invaders arrived, breathed our air, ate, and drank, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all of man’s weapons and devices had failed, by the tiniest creatures that God, in His wisdom, put upon this Earth. By the toll of a billion deaths, man had earned his immunity, his right to survive among this planet’s infinite organisms. And that right is ours against all challenges, for neither do men live, nor die, in vain.” The mere thought that the tables have turned, that we ourselves could now be the ones undone by God s tiniest creatures, is scarier than any shark or any dinosaur, and it s a stark reminder of how prescient the best science fiction can be.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own)War of the Worlds was released on June 29, 2005.

140 Essential Animated Movies To Watch NowThe origins of the whiz-bang animated wonders we see today in the likes of Toy Story, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and How to Train Your Dragon date back more than a hundred years. Flip books and zoetropes revealed the mesmerizing power of animation to humans before movies were even invented in the late 19th century. And if you really wanted to journey back in time, look to prehistoric cave art where animals drawn with excessive pairs of legs created the illusion of motion when illuminated by fire – it might be considered the first animation. So it was inevitable, practically human nature, that animation grew in tandem with cinema from the beginning. And it was only inevitable in the Internet age that someone, somewhere would pile up all the best feature-length animated films from the 20th century and beyond, rank them, and call the guide something like the 140 Essential Animated Movies Ever to Watch Right Now! Which is what you ll find below. All forms of the medium are featured here, from cel (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Land Before Time) to 3-D (Toy Story, Shrek), rotoscoped (Tower, A Scanner Darkly) to stop-motion (Chicken Run, Fantastic Mr. Fox), and oil canvas (Loving Vincent) to mixed media (Waltz With Bashir). Animation is frequently associated with specific studios, and to that end we have represented Disney (Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty), Pixar (WALL-E, Finding Dory), DreamWorks (How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda), Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Kiki s Delivery Service), and more. How did we decide on the Essential 140? We looked at reviews, other best of lists, cultural impact, and applied some editorial discretion. They didn t have to just be good – in fact, some are not so Fresh at all! – but they had to play a part in the history of the medium. These are the movies that have been passed on for generations, no matter how much style and artistic tastes change year-to-year. They re the ones that parents and kids watch together, frequently becoming part of the family tradition. They re the movies that pushed animation forward, and that inspire people to pick up the pen, pencil, or stylus and try to make their own mark in history with their own colorful stories.Tomatometer scores were not a factor in ranking (besides the fact that it needed to have one), only feature films were considered, and movies with some live-action thrown in (The LEGO Movie, James and the Giant Peach) were fine, as long as the majority of their runtime was animated.Whatever tickles your toon, you ll find it s type here. Get drawn to the 140 essential animated movies ever!Check out the 140 Essential Animated TV Shows #140

King of the Crop: “Original” Us Takes Records For Horror, March and “R”-Rated Films(Photo by Universal)Let’s lay out some pretty amazing facts about Us’ million weekend. That is the highest opening ever for an original “R”-rated film. The 11 “R” films to open higher were either sequels or adapted from popular books. Us is also the biggest opening ever for an original live-action film in March and an original horror film in any month. Only It and last year’s Halloween opener higher. But…can it outgross Get Out s 6 million?Us has already doubled Get Out’s .4 million opening. A good start indeed. It is the 142nd film to open with million or more. Of those previous 141 films, do you know how many failed to reach the 6 million earned by Get Out? Six. (Fifty Shades of Grey, Halloween 2018, Fast and Furious, Quantum of Solace, X-Men: Apocalypse, 2012). That is already 95.7% in favor of Us besting Get Out’s total. The number to watch next week when Dumbo knocks Us back to second is whether its second weekend is over or under million.Rotten Returns: Captive State Takes A Dive(Photo by Focus Features)In its second week, Focus Features’ Captive State could not remain in a Top 10 where four finishers made less than million this weekend. That is because it took an estimated 70.7% drop to only 8,000. The million production that has grossed all of .2 million in 10 days of release is the second film of 2018 to have a 70% drop or higher. (Replicas fell 81.5%.) In 2018 there were six wide releases that dropped as much in their second weekend – Mortal Engines, Assassination Nation, Gringo, Super Troopers 2, Kin, and Once Upon a Deadpool.Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Top 10 Of MCU(Photo by Disney)One film already carving its path amongst the all-timers at the box office is Captain Marvel. With another million this weekend its total stands at 1 million, the 21st-best total for a film after 17 days of release. Its worldwide total currently stands at 0 million – or – the 7th highest-grossing film based on a Marvel property ever.Among other victories in the Top 10 this week we have How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which is up to 8 million worldwide, just million behind the original (which is still the series’ domestic champion with 7.5 million.) If estimates hold on A Madea Family Funeral it will officially be the third highest-grossing film of Tyler Perry’s directorial career. Finally while the numbers are not giant for Five Feet Apart, a 34% drop from last week means the million production has now grossed over million and should get itself at least over million when all is said and done. This Time Last Year: Pacific Rim Led, But Would Soon Fall(Photo by Warner Bros)One of the biggest bombs of 2018, nevertheless, opened to no. 1 this weekend. Pacific Rim Uprising began with .1 million and later finished with just under million total domestically. Black Panther was finally knocked back to second place with another million as it had amassed over 1 million after six weekends. Also opening with Sherlock Gnomes (.6 million), Paul Apostle of Christ (.1 million), Midnight Sun ( million) and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane which missed the top ten with .7 million. Leading the per-theater-average charge was Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (,011 on each of its 27 screens for .62 million.) Fifty Shades Freed also managed to finally cross the 0 million mark.On the Vine: Elephants and a Beach Bum(Photo by Dumbo)Disney releases the first of their 2019 live-action remakes with Dumbo. Tim Burton’s 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was the biggest success of his career and Dumbo could very well end up being his second highest global success. Also opening wide is PureFlix’s abortion drama, Unplanned, the first “R”-rated release for the Christian-based company. Finally, Neon releases Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum with Matthew McConaughey. The Full Top 10: March 22-24Us (2019) 93% – .25 million (.25 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .02 million (1.49 million total)Wonder Park (2019) 34% – .00 million (.47 million total)Five Feet Apart (2019) 53% – .75 million (.46 million total)How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .53 million (5.75 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .50 million (.88 million total)Gloria Bell (2018) 91% – .80 million (.49 million total)No manches Frida 2 (2019) 13% – .78 million (.62 million total)The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) 84% – .13 million (3.32 million total)Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% – .01 million (.87 million total)
