And I m wondering, with that in mind, what was the “pens down” moment where you were like, Okay, this is it. This is the finished product. And how did you feel in that moment?Zack Snyder: We all had a glass of wine and toasted each other, the whole group – Debbie and I, and my visual effects team and my editorial team. I called a bunch of my friends who have worked on it, and we all just kind of had this cathartic moment where we said, Okay, it s done. It was funny because it was kind of a schedule [thing] – the schedule made it happen, thank God. If the pandemic… or if this movie was due to release in another month or two, we d still be working on it, I m sure. Thank God because they put us up against the clock; it was cool, it was a nice way to stop.Rotten Tomatoes: So you were tempted to keep going and tinkering?Snyder: Oh my god. I don t think we ever would ve stopped if we [didn’t have that deadline].(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: I want to take you back to another moment – when you got the call from Toby Emmerich and the studio said, It s a go. We re going to do this. Can you talk a little bit about that call and what the feeling was to know that it was finally going to happen?Snyder: There was an initial call that said, Do you want to release the movie right off of your laptop, just as it is? I was like, Yeah, I don t think I want to do that. That doesn t really seem like it s going to be good for anybody. And then I said, Hey, let me just come into the studio and tell you what I would do. I went in and I just told them about the scope and scale and what I thought I could achieve. And then they all came over to the house and watched the movie that I had, down in my theater. And they were like, Okay, let s do it. First of all, it was a huge undertaking – it was a moment of dread and a moment of adulation. We had definitely reached a kind of cathartic tipping point where we felt like healing could start for all of us.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: “Scope and scale” – it s huge. What was it like to paint on this size of canvas and with this length to give the room to tell these stories as fully as you wanted to, and have – I don t know about complete artistic freedom – but to really stretch that muscle?Snyder: I mean, not to say we didn t have any oversight – we had the budget, we had these other things, constraints of COVID, there s a lot of things that did kind of keep us in the box, thank God. But as far as just me doing what I thought was cool, it s a hundred percent that. This is the cut that I completed in January of 2017 – give or take a little bit of squishing, but essentially that s it. So, to come back to it and sort of re-experience it was also quite a sort of reunion, if you will. And to see how it was going to – with all the visual facts and the design and everything – really be realized.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: You’ve said that Cyborg is really the heart of the movie, and you do absolutely get that sense watching it – to the extent that the title lands on this beautiful shot of Ray. And you get so much of this story about this man. Why was it important for you to really center Ray s character, Victor, in your story?Snyder: Chris Terrio and I, we had long conversations about it when we were getting ready to write the script for Justice League. When we were banging out the story, we felt like Cyborg as a character was really the one we wanted to focus on. We felt like he s an incredible character in the DC universe, he s an important character in the DC universe, and he just really needed his story told in a way that – in context of these other Gods – that established him in that pantheon. And that was really a thing we just, we really focused on from the beginning, and then it s really fun to see it realized because Ray does an incredible job.Rotten Tomatoes: Have you spoken to Ray and the others? I assume some of them have seen the film in its complete form – what s the reaction been like to seeing this vision?Snyder: Ray hasn t seen it yet, he s seeing it hopefully the next couple of days. But yeah, they ve been really supportive and incredibly enthusiastic about the film and about me being able to get it finished.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: So, we wouldn t be here without the fans and the huge campaign that brought us to this point. There are so many amazing stories of what happened during that campaign, and I m wondering, is there a moment, an interaction – I don t know if it s the retweets or it s the billboard or what it is – that really stands out to you as the thing that you ll take with you from this #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign?Snyder: Yeah. So many memories really, to be honest. I remember when there was the Comic-Con bus stops, that kind of started it. And then there was that big, gigantic billboard in Times Square. I think that made me really start to go, Wow, I don t know what these guys are up to, but this is legitimate caring. And whether it be the airplanes flying around Warner Bros. towing banners, or the million fruit baskets delivered to Ann Sarnoff when she became president of Warner – I think it was a combination of all those things really.But I really think in the end, it s just how supportive they ve been of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and mental health awareness. Really that is the jewel in the crown of what they ve accomplished. For me, it s better than any movie – the persistent campaign that these guys have mounted in regard to suicide prevention and mental health awareness. That s really it. I mean, they ve saved lives with their campaign and that s the bottom line. It’s fun to make a movie, but that s really cool stuff.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: Yeah. And that probably bleeds into what I assume you might say about the next question. But a lot of the discourse around fandom does, recently at least, tend to focus on “toxic” or negative fandom. And I m talking to you from Rotten Tomatoes, and we are part of the story in some ways – some fans don t like the scores on some of the films, etc. But for those who only focus on the negative side of fandom, what do you want people to know about fans of DC and fans of yours and what they ve been doing?Snyder: Listen, I think the fans… and, of course, you can t throw a blanket over the entire thing because this is a bunch of individuals. These people aren t professionals they re not paid to do anything they re just fans of the movies and, in my case, they just want the movie out there that I had designed and created originally. Then, along the way, they got involved in my cause for whatever reason; they had some sort of empathy or they had an experience themselves. And it s a combination of those things that I think has made the fans, this community that I interact with, what they are.Are there occasions of fandom where it gets out of control? Absolutely. We all know that. But the reality is that these fans used their voices to change the course of a giant corporation and to basically get a movie released that [might never have been released]. Someone would say, Oh, are you ever going to make a sequel? I m like, Well, there s no plan and Warner Bros. really has no interest in making a sequel with me. But is it more likely that a sequel to this movie would have been made than what happened? And the answer to that is yes. It just speaks to their actual power and I m proud to be associated with them.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: One of the scenes that s going to really impress fans, I think, is one at the end, towards the end… but I don’t know are we allowed to talk about this in context at this point, or…Snyder: I don t know. You tell me.Rotten Tomatoes: Okay, so you bring together two iconic characters. You ve obviously dropped the hints of what s happening. As a fan and as somebody who s worked on this for a long time, what was it like to put them together and write that script and shoot something new for this film?Snyder: The scene was important to me because I felt like, if this is the last gasp of Zack Snyder s DC universe, which is fine –Rotten Tomatoes: It s more than a gasp. It s a booming shout!Snyder: The last “booming shout,” then, fair enough. I really wanted to say, I have a little bit of unfinished business and that is to bring these two characters together. And also I m a fan of, and very excited by, the Knightmare post-Darkseid world and love it. I have always loved the concept and was working my way here as best I could with these movies. It’s always fun to sort of dabble in that world – really fun to get to write and do a little scene setting.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: I want to talk to you about director s cuts in general and how important you feel it is for directors in your position to be able to get their vision out into the world. You ve had a few instances where you ve been able to give us alternative cuts and things, and there are rumors of other cuts of DC movies and other movies flying around. For you, who has a fandom that’s really interested in your vision, why is it important they get to see get to see a film as intended?I ve made director’s cuts of almost every movie I ve ever made, except for, I think, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Man of Steel. And I would argue that the Sucker Punch director s cut isn t really the full movie – that s the one movie I would say, Oh yeah, there s a cut of that movie that no one s ever seen. But otherwise… Watchmen director s cut, I prefer the BvS Ultimate Edition, which is the director’s cut; I prefer it because I just feel like it s less encumbered by the studio and by the notes and just by the constraints of what they think a movie has to be and its length. “Nobody wants to see a three-hour movie” – I don t agree with that a hundred percent.As far as other filmmakers go and their experience with director s cuts, I can t say exactly. It s personal to me, the way I ve dealt with it, it s a way I kind of justified making changes to the movies that I worked on – it’s knowing that I can always just release a director’s cut and at least these feel like, Okay, well, there s the real movie. (Photo by HBO Max)And I understand the balance between art and commerce – that you do have to strike a balance sometimes. The theatrical cut of Watchmen is based entirely on the maximum running length of film in IMAX. The film could be no longer than two hours and 20 minutes, or it would have fallen off the spool. That s where you see the sort of two things coming together, and you have to accept that if you want the movie that way [in IMAX]. And I did, so I m fine. My point is only that it is a business and so, “What will the market bear?” is a real question.Is it my hope that this movement might generate a little bit more power for some directors that are in a situation where they re not sure if they re going to get their movie completed? That d be great. But this is a very particular situation, I think, in that the breadcrumbs lead directly to a narrative that the fans were able to put together and turn into a rallying cry. It was a perfect storm of all those things. And the charities and their cause and the whole thing has a kind of blended reality that I think would be hard to duplicate. But would I hope that someone benefits from this? (Photo by © NEON)It s sometimes easy to forget in the blur of manic performances that have defined Nicolas Cage s work in the last decade – the chainsaw-wielding Red in Mandy, his wide-eyed murderous father in Mom and Dad, and other very Nic Cage roles that seem to come around every few months – that his is a career of chapters, each of which might singularly define a lesser performer, and that Wild Nic is just the latest. The star emerged in the 1980s as an edgy standout in zeitgest-capturing favorites (Rumble Fish, Peggy Sue Got Married), blossomed into romantic lead (Moonstruck) and A-list Oscar winner (Leaving Las Vegas), and crushed the box office a few times as an unlikely action hero in a string of Bruckheimer-produced 90s favorites.Then he went and recovered the Declaration of Independence as an Indiana Jones type in the National Treasure movies.Even within these Nic Cage eras, though, he always managed a few surprises. Consider his vanity-be-damned dual-role as the Kaufman brothers in Adaptation, for which he was nominated for an Oscar during a seeming career slump; or his delightfully unhinged performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans, a turn that would set the tone for our current Nic Cage chapter but which, at the time, was a shock to the system and a turn of the page, even if it was some time coming.Still, nothing in Cage s career is as surprising, perhaps, as the new Certified Fresh drama, Pig. Here, Cage plays Rob, a onetime big-name chef who now lives as a recluse in the wilds of Oregon with his best friend, a foraging pig who scouts for the truffles that are his owner/buddy s sole source of income. When the pig is stolen during a violent break-in at Rob s cabin, expectations are set for a John Wick-style revenge tale – and another very Nic Cage performance – but writer/director Michael Sarnoski has other things on his mind. And so does Cage. What follows is a somber, moving, and at times wryly funny tale about a man who descends into Portland s seedy underground foodie world (surprisingly violent), single-mindedly focused on retrieving the one thing in life he deeply loves. It is anchored by a quiet and deeply affecting performance from Cage, one that critics are calling a revelation and among the best work of his career.The movie is a marker for Cage, too, who told Rotten Tomatoes that Pig came around at just the right time, both in terms of getting back to his roots in more dramatic, soberer fare – though he does get to utter the line I don t f k my pig! – and in reflecting events and developments in his real life. I was feeling lost, Cage told us. I was feeling the need for isolation. I was feeling, Oh, I m no longer invited in Hollywood. Nor do I want to be invited in Hollywood. I have no interest in going back. I like making quiet little dramas. This is what I m interested in. Ahead of the movie s release in theaters, Cage spoke to us about this step away from his wild-man roles, what Pablo Picasso has to do with it, and a passion he shares with his latest character: good food and bold flavors.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: This movie has a bit of a strange conceit – the log line for this film is about a revenge-seeking truffle hunter! What was the pitch to you for the project when they were trying to get you on board? What was the thing that sold you on this story?Nicolas Cage: Well, I can tell you “revenge” never came into the equation for me. I read the script, Michael [Sarnoski]’s script, and I immediately responded to it more as a kind of cinematic haiku, a poem, really, a meditation on loss and a character analysis of a person who had lost great love. I also felt that I was at a point in my own life experience, aggregate collection of memories and dreams and experiences, that enabled me to respond to Rob in such a way where I felt that nothing had to be forced, that I felt I understood Rob.In fact, I told Michael over lunch that when I read his script I had a very evocative dream of my cat and something horrible happening to my cat, Merlin, who is one of my best friends. The relationship that you can have with our animal brothers and sisters, it s so much closer in some ways, so much more profound, because it s not corrupted by the noise of people and what that can harbor in terms of jealousies and angers. It s just unconditional love.So, I felt that those relationships – my relationship with my cat, my dog, who s no longer with us – those are things that I could put into this performance and it s a perfect time for it. When we all agreed to make the movie, we hadn t been hit by the pandemic yet, but I think we ve all gotten closer, even still, to our animal family, because we relied on them so heavily to get through that.(Photo by © NEON)Rotten Tomatoes: How old is Merlin, by the way? And was he helpful during the pandemic?Cage: Merlin is two years old. Very, yeah. I relied on him quite a bit. He s very affectionate, a Maine Coon cat. Really kind of like another son in some ways.Rotten Tomatoes: What was your relationship like with the pig, or pigs, you were working with in this film? How was it working with them?Cage: There was one pig. Her name was Brandy. Like many of us, she was very payment-oriented. She wasn t really interested in people. If they wanted to get a soulful look in her eyes, they would show her a bit of carrot off camera; or if they needed her to go to a certain mark, they would put some food down. But I think that relationship was really developed with the eye of Michael Sarnoski and our director of photography. They figured out ways of photographing Brandy and Rob so that the relationship never lapsed into schmaltz or Hallmark-card sappiness. It was just a quiet witnessing of these two in the wilderness. I think that made it more heartfelt in some ways, but it was a lot to do with getting her in the right position with the food, and also photographing it in the right manner.Rotten Tomatoes: You mentioned “soulful” and that I think is a very great word for this film and for your performance, and a lot of people have been saying this is a different Nicolas cCage than we ve seen in a while. The last film I saw of you in was Prisoners of Ghostland and then I was re-watching Mandy last night. They’re very different from Pig, but it does feel, to me at least as a viewer, that there is a connection between Robin as a character and someone like Red [Cage’s character in Mandy], who also has tried to escape the world and has that peace disrupted. Do you think that Robin really is so different from some of the characters you ve been playing lately? Or is there a connection?Cage: I mean, he s certainly different in the regard that he s not motivated by revenge, but I do share that observation, that he s similar to Red in that he s dealing with tremendous loss, and loss of love, and the feelings that can evoke. I think what people in the media may be struggling with is that I have made it almost a mission of sorts to go into what I sometimes call a Western Kabuki style of film performance, almost an operatic style of film performance – by design. I mean, this was always very carefully and methodically choreographed and though-out, both vocally and dance-wise in terms of movement. I wanted to do that because I felt that we had gotten caught in a trap of naturalism as a style.Not that I m Picasso, I m not saying that, but I remember one conversation that I had with my father, where I was very tripped out by Picasso s portraits that seemed so abstract with people having eyes on the same side of their face. Like, what is this? I said, Well, can he also do photo realistic drawing? and dad said, Absolutely. He broke free. I always thought that what you can do in one art form, maybe you can do in another, and why not take a chance and attempt some sort of breaking-free with film performance? But somewhere along the way, I think I needed to remind myself – and, in fact, I think I needed to remind certain folks in critical response – that it wasn t the only brush I painted with. I mean, I think Joe is a movie that I made not long ago that was as close to my true self as I could get in terms of what was important to him.(Photo by © NEON)Certainly, with Rob in Pig, I wanted to get back to a kind of a quiet, meditative, internalized performance. It was not difficult. It was something that I felt I had the life experience for and the memories and the dreams, if you will, to portray without forcing it. So when I read Michael s script, it was exactly the right material at the right time for what I was trying to convey. I was feeling lost. I was feeling the need for isolation. I was feeling, Oh, I m no longer invited in Hollywood. Nor do I want to be invited in Hollywood. I have no interest in going back. I like making quiet little dramas. This is what I m interested in. But I can see where it would be shocking to the folks that remember me making five Jerry Bruckheimer movies back-to-back, which at that time was the challenge, in my opinion – no one thought I should do an adventure film or that I even had the wherewithal to do an adventure film, but I had grown up on Bronson and Eastwood and Connery, and I thought, Well, that would be fun to at least try. It s kind of a situation of wanting to stay interested and also stay challenged. At this moment, what interests me is getting back to my roots, which is quiet dramas.Rotten Tomatoes: The film has a lot to say about food, different philosophies towards food, Robin s passion, and everything just looks beautiful that we get to see you cook – or your stand-in cooks make – in the movie. Are you a cook in your own time? And do you have a specialty?Cage:  I want to go on record: I didn t have any stand-in cooks. I can t replace my hands. If I see someone else s hand in front of my hand, I go, No, no, no. That takes me out of the movie. I had two excellent teachers, Chef Chris and Chef Rucker from Le Pigeon. Chef Chris taught me the mushroom tart, or pie, and then I learned the squab blueberry dish from Le Pigeon.Food has always been important to me. Food is what I like to spend my money on. Food, to me, comes first. I think that the chefs today can do amazing things in the world of art, because without food, then nothing else really matters: Food, and then I can enjoy music and then I can enjoy painting and then I can enjoy a great cinema and then I can meditate or then I can write a poem. Whatever it is, food comes first.I have tremendous respect for these people and I also understand the pressures that go into the world, the epicurean world. Because if you think about this art form – and it is an art – that s the only one where they re actually ingesting it physically into their body as an audience, or as a client, or as a foodie, or whatever you want to call it. There s tremendous pressure and risk with that. You don t want them to get sick. You want them to have a good experience. Everything matters. The ambience matters, the bread matters, everything. So it s a high-pressure job and I wanted to convey the regard and the reverence that I have for what they do.(Photo by © NEON)Rotten Tomatoes: When you re home, are you someone who has a go-to dish that you can whip up in five minutes?Cage: If you re asking me, am I a chef, I wouldn t put myself at that level, but I can cook. I make a pretty good seafood arrabbiata pasta. I am passionate about putting different tastes together. I like Japanese food, I like Italian, and Chinese is probably the most complex. I think the continent of Asia, probably, in my opinion, has the greatest and most complex foods of the world. But I remember I once imagined a sweet shrimp or an ebi and I went to my sushi chef and I said, Could you slice the sweet shrimp open and then could you put the uni inside the ebi and then can you put it on less rice, please, and then wrap it with the seaweed? I had that taste in my mind and it was so beautiful when I got it.So, I do like to put tastes together. I remember Joel Robuchon had something that was a Wow. He put coffee grinds with uni frappe. I mean, who thinks to do that? Who thinks to put coffee and sea urchin together? It was one of the most amazing taste sensations I ve ever had. So, yeah, I m very interested in that world and I do like to play around.I do Eggs Diablo – I really spice up my fried eggs over easy and I just kick in a lot of chili and red chili pepper flakes and some tomato paste. It s a beautiful little dish that I like to make for breakfast, but yeah, I enjoy it.The secret to great cooking for me is that you have to have respect for the actual ingredients. Sometimes these chefs get lost in overdoing it with the complexity of the sauce, because they re trying to mask what s wrong with the actual source, what s wrong with the fish. But if you get a great piece of fish, treat it with respect. Just light olive oil, some garlic, some sea salt, bingo. Trip to the moon, man.Rotten Tomatoes: I need to come to your place. Just finally, they re giving me the wrap, but for your upcoming Joe Exotic series, are we going to get the Kabuki-style performance? How extreme are we going there?Cage: That s not going to be happening, I m not playing Joe Exotic. We had two really excellent scripts, but I think I don t know. I think somewhere along the way, the studio felt that that was a fad that had come and gone and that it was a thing of the past. Frankly, I for one am okay with it because I have other things I want to explore and other characters I want to play.I was a bit trepidatious about going into the television universe, too. One of the things I really love about independent filmmaking is that I can get in and I can get out. If there s one problem in the chain of filmmakers, I know I ve got just four more weeks to go; but a TV character, if there s a problem and you re stuck on location for six months, that does seem a little terrifying to me.Pig is in theaters from Friday July 16, 2021.On an Apple device? Surprising, thrilling, hilarious – Parasite is not eligible for major film categories, and here is where it will get its justice. Unless, that is, the epicness of The Irishman or technical wizardry of 1917 dazzle the HFPA enough to cause an upset.Best Screenplay Motion PictureWho will win?Marriage Story (2019) 94%Who should win? Hard to argue with Noah Baumbach s deeply personal, beautifully observed, and very, well, wordy divorce tale taking home the prize. In many ways, it resembles the venerable 1980s cop drama Hill Street Blues – except for the fact all the cops are superheroes in a world where almost everyone has a power and a costumed identity. Across the 12 issues and one hardcover special written by Moore, the series heavily featured detective Jeff Smax and his new partner Toybox. Of course, stories of other police officers and cases filtered throughout, even as it culminated in an overarching tale of government corruption.The Approach: If one chose to ignore the larger story developed across Moore s 12-issue run, it is very easy to see the program as its initial pitch: Hill Street Blues in a world of superheroes. Unlike, say, Sony’s adaptation of Powers, Top 10 would need the prestige budget to pull off the world as designed by artists Gene Ha and Zander Cannon; it’s stuffed to the margins with amazing-looking superheroes who flutter by for only an instant. Then there are the major characters like Smax, Dust Devil, and Sergeant Hyperdog to consider. They would be expensive to translate to live-action.But a point of departure from the comics could come from leaning even further in to the Hill Street Blues format, which burned its ongoing dramas slowly while favoring cases of the week. The format has served Law Order: Special Victims Unit well for 20 years and would give Top 10 enough of an engine to run five or so seasons as a prestige drama on a streaming service.From Hell As A Gritty and Complex Limited Series(Photo by Penguin Random House)The Premise: Inspector Frederick Abberline and charlatan psychic Robert James Lee investigate the vicious murders of sex workers in the Whitechapel district of London. The sensational details of the murders grab the attention of the Fleet Street papers, which leads the killer to write in and to the introduction of his legendary sobriquet: Jack the Ripper. Meanwhile, Royal Physician and Freemason Sir William Gull accepts an assignment from Queen Victoria to end the threat of an illegitimate heir via her grandson Albert marrying a commoner girl from the East End. He is also ordered to silence a group of sex workers who know the truth and attempt to blackmail one of the conspirators. The mission gives Gull the chance perform an obscure rite that will both solidify male dominance over women and, as he sees it, birth the 20th century.The Approach: Honestly, a direct adaptation would serve From Hell the best. The film version, directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, abandoned Moore’s compelling “why-dunit” narrative almost entirely in favor of the traditional “whodunit” seen in most Jack the Ripper movies. The text of From Hell (brilliantly realized by the great Eddie Campbell) leads readers down more sinister allies of government conspiracies, into the mysticism hidden in the layout of London, and even gives us a bit of time travel. It also features some striking characters in the form of Marie Kelly, Abberline, and Lee – to say nothing of Gull himself, who Moore and Campbell bring to such vivid life.Unlike some of the other Moore comics on this list, though, From Hell could only arrive on television as an eight-episode limited series. Both the story and its construction require the tight confines of the TV format, just like the original comics themselves.Miracleman As Prestige Drama With Big Names(Photo by Marvel)The Premise: By saying the word “Kimota!”, Michael Moran transforms into Miracleman – a character not unlike Shazam. Losing about a decade to a perceived amnesia, Moran eventually learns his time as Miracleman was a simulation orchestrated by the British government. It leads to conflict with fellow test subject Johnny Bates, who destroys the center of London and kills some 40,000 people. In the wake of their devastating battle, Miracleman is revealed to the world and decides to do the only sensible thing left to him: take over the planet and run it himself.The Approach: Mircaleman – also known as Marvelman in the U.K. – may lend itself the most to a Watchmen-style reinvention. In fact, writer Neil Gaiman and artist Mark Buckingham already did a lot of the development of the concept when they took over Miracleman from Moore and his collaborators. In their “Golden Age” storyline, Gaiman and Buckingham revealed a world under stress from the utopia built by Miracleman. The individual issues told tales of regular people chaffing against that fantastic world, removing Moran from the center of the action to a seemingly distant force. That concept would allow for a prestige drama about real people coping with an unwanted occupation. And like Watchmen, it would leave the text of the Moore stories as its history. Such a series could also find a way to finish up Gaiman and Buckingham’s abandoned “Silver Age” story, which was to see the return of Bates and reveal larger cracks in Miracleman s brave new world.Like the other Moore comics we’ve discussed so far, the idea fits snugly into the realm of prestige dramas on streaming services, meaning it would need a low episode count and a cadre of impressive actors to breathe life into its world.Tom Strong As High-End Animated Series(Photo by DC Comics)The Premise: Science hero Tom Strong – a spin on pulp adventurers like Doc Savage – his wife Dhalua, and their daughter Tesla, explore the world and battle science villains with the aid of steam-powered robot Pneuman and super-smart gorilla King Solomon. Along the way, luxurious flashbacks told in the style of older comics reveal Strong’s origins and other adventures from his long life.The Approach: The whimsical and good-hearted nature of the original Tom Strong series by Moore and artist Chris Sprouse lends itself best to an animated series. Of course, a high-end series with great animation and an absurd attention to details. The format allows the potential series to keep Sprouse’s design aesthetic while also seamlessly switching to other art or animation styles as the story dictates. It also means the program could keep the decidedly un-Watchmen feel of the comic. Designed in many respects to pull away from Moore’s tendency to deconstruct genre, Tom Strong is a character whose seeming simplicity calls for the sort of complexity one can find in the best animated tales.Captain Britain As A Disney+ Original(Photo by Marvel Comics)The Premise: A member of the lower aristocracy, Brian Braddock comes upon his powers when Merlyn (who claims to be the wizard of the Arthur legend) and his daughter Roma save him from a bad bike accident. Accepting the Amulet of Might, Brian is suffused with energy and becomes the Captain Britain of Earth-616, the main Earth of the Marvel Multiverse. Facing a gaggle of homegrown threats and inter-dimensional crises, Brian also attempts to keep up with his studies at university. When Moore and artist Alan Davis took over the character, they introduced characters like the time-traveling mercs known as the Special Executive and a superhero-slaying monster called The Fury. He and Davis also introduced the notion of the Marvel Multi-verse itself and even the Earth-616 designation.The Approach: Clearly, this is a Disney+ series waiting to happen. With its close ties to the multi-verse, it could serve as a way to explore those ideas – to say nothing of introducing different Marvel Earths – while also telling a very localized story about a British hero with deep roots in the country’s own mythology and history. Merlyn’s participation also gives such a show a mystical element not seen in the other Disney+ projects announced thus far. Also, with Captain Britain’s ties to the X-Men (his sister is the telepathic mutant formerly known as Psylocke), the series could also slyly introduce those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.All that said, this may be the one concept so removed from Moore’s spirit that it may not be much of a sacrilege to bring it to the screen. Also, since we were fans of the Excalibur comic by Chris Claremont and Davis, we just want the character to make his MCU debut.Like this? City of God is kinetic and visceral. The active camerawork is gorgeous. City of God really did try to find those moments where we can pause and view these characters without any judgment. No character in City of God is black-and-white. There are moments when, even though we know some of these dudes are ruthless killers, they show us little hints that showcase their youth and make it clear to us that they re still 16-, 17-, 18-years-old at the end of the day. One scene in particular I remember is Li l Zé. He was this ruthless overlord, but he gets turned down at that dance party. And you just see his face where he s smiling at first, and then you just see the embarrassment wash over him. Oh my God! Literally everyone in the world knows that moment; everyone in the world knows what it s like to get rejected. But considering that we ve seen this man brutally kill people at this point, I think it s so interesting how the filmmaker also never intended for you to judge those characters. But he also never wanted to give a romanticized view of their life. He wanted you to fully understand how difficult and horrifying some of those realities can be. City of God is a masterpiece.Really quick though, I also want to take the time, and give a special mention to Ava DuVernay s work. Ava makes the most culturally important work of our time as a filmmaker. 13th is what taught the entire world that we re essentially living in a re-engineered version of slavery. Ava is committed to promoting awareness. Outside of her being an extraordinarily talented filmmaker, she makes incredibly formative and culturally impactful work. I just want to shout her out as well. The Front Runner (2018) 58% In 1988, former Colorado senator Gary Hart was a leading Democratic candidate for U.S. President on his way to winning his party s official nomination until news broke about a possible extramarital affair, which he refused to acknowledge or address. The resulting scandal not only led to Hart dropping out of the race, but also signaled a dramatic shift in the way political news would be covered. This week s The Front Runner, the latest drama from Jason Reitman, aims to tell that story and shed light on the man at its center, played by Hugh Jackman. While Jackman turns in a magnetic performance as Gary Hart, critics say the film has little room left for any of its esteemed supporting cast which includes Vera Farmiga, J.K. Simmons, and Alfred Molina, among others and fails to dive deep enough into its central issues to make a compelling argument. That said, for a look at a strangely forgotten chapter of American politics, The Front Runner is still an interesting reminder of how quickly political celebrity can fade and disappear.

Despite opening to mixed reviews in 1980, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining has become one of the landmark horror classics of all time. That’s why creating a legacy sequel almost 40 years later was seen as a daunting task.
