Some box office pundits argued (and some didn t) that the surprise success of Black Panther was a factor in disappointing box office for movies (like Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle in Time, Red Sparrow, and Ready Player One) that might have performed better otherwise. Perhaps that s why Warner Bros and MGM are indeed moving forward with Tomb Raider 2, effectively giving Vikander a second chance with the Lara Croft character. Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, High-Rise) will direct the sequel, which has been scheduled for release on March 19, 2021. It s not yet known which specific Tomb Raider video game (if any at all) might be adapted for the film. (The first was loosely adapted from the 2013 video game reboot of the same title.). The 2018 Tomb Raider was Rotten at 52% on the Tomatometer, but hopefully Ben Wheatley can improve on that score with the sequel. As for the box office prospects for Tomb Raider 2, some writers are already speculating that its challenger in 2021 will be Marvel s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.Other Top Headlines1. ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN CHILD STAR TO RETURN FOR HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The original 1978 slasher movie Halloween revolved around two neighboring babysitters played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Nancy Kyes watching children in houses across the street from each other. Although Brian Andrews played Tommy Doyle, the boy Curtis Laurie Strode was sitting, his role was replaced by Paul Rudd in 1995 s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, and will be played by Anthony Michael Hall (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) in next year s Halloween Kills (10/16/2020). As it turns out, Tommy won t be the only kid returning in Halloween Kills. Despite her role in the original film, Kyle Richards is probably best known for appearing on the hit TV series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (she s also Paris and Nicky Hilton s aunt), but she will return to reprise her Halloween role as Lindsey Wallace. Although no premise details have emerged yet for Halloween Kills, the casting of Hall and Richards suggests that Michael Myers might be returning to Haddonfield this time around to target the kids that he didn t get to kill in 1978. Jamie Lee Curtis and Judy Greer are also both reprising their roles from last year s Halloween (Certified Fresh at 78%). Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) is also being filmed back-to-back with the third movie, Halloween Ends, which is scheduled for release a year later on October 15, 2021.2. ROONEY MARA JOINING GUILLERMO DEL TORO S NIGHTMARE ALLEY(Photo by Laurie Sparham / © Warner Bros. Pictures)Guillermo del Toro has obviously been a highly respected genre director since at least 2006 s Pan s Labyrinth (Certified Fresh at 95%), but after The Shape of Water (Certified Fresh at 92%) won the Best Picture Academy Award last year, his clout is arguably now right up there with any other top director. Guillermo del Toro s first film as director following that win will be a remake of the 1947 carnival thriller Nightmare Alley (Fresh at 100%), and it quickly attracted seven-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as its leads (in the roles originally played by Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell). The biggest role that remained uncast until this week was Molly, who was basically the female romantic lead for Cooper s character, but we can now report that the role has been filled by Rooney Mara. Mara is also a two-time Academy Award nominee, once for Best Supporting Actress (Carol) and once for Best Actress (the 2011 remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Fox Searchlight is expected to schedule Nightmare Alley sometime in prime awards season in late 2020.3. DOCTOR WHO STAR PETER CAPALDI ENLISTED FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD (Photo by Simon Ridgway / ©BBC)Much like the previous Suicide Squad movie in 2016, director James Gunn s soft reboot The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021) is expected to have a fairly large ensemble cast. Following the recent casting of comedian Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark, the new Suicide Squad team membership is pretty much filled, but presumably the new lineup will be facing multiple foes, and so far, none of those villains (or heroes) have been confirmed. So, we don t have any idea who Peter Capaldi (A.K.A. the 12th Doctor Who) might be playing. Current Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson is also reportedly in the running for a small role (which is not surprising, as the show will return soon, so his time will be limited). Other new cast members in The Suicide Squad will include David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniel Melchior (Ratcatcher), and Idris Elba, Nathan Fillian, and Taika Waititi in unknown roles. Pete Davidson also has an untitled comedy based on his life story scheduled next summer for June 19, 2020.4. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SENTENCED TO STAR IN EX-CON DRAMA PALMER(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima /© Amazon)Like many (many) pop singers before and after him, Justin Timberlake has branched out since 2000 to include roles in movies ranging from animated films (Shrek the Third, Trolls), comedies (The Love Guru, Friends with Benefits), and Academy Award-nominated dramas (The Social Network, Inside Llewyn Davis). After taking a brief break following 2017 s Wonder Wheel, Timberlake is ready to star in another film, which will be Palmer, in which he will play a recently released ex-con trying to get his life back on track. Palmer will be directed by actor-turned-director Fisher Stevens, who won an Academy Award in 2010 for the documentary The Cove.5. EMILY BLUNT, JON HAMM, AND CHRISTOPHER WALKEN SPICE THINGS UP WITH WILD MOUNTAIN THYME (Photo by Cindy Ord, Amy Sussman, Robert Marquardt/Getty Images)Outside Mullingar was a play set in Ireland and featuring a cast that included Debra Messing (TV s Will Grace) that debuted on Broadway in 2014, and now it s being adapted as an independent movie called Wild Mountain Thyme. Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) has been attached to star in Wild Mountain Thyme for a while now, and this week, we learned who his co-stars will be. They include Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Jon Hamm (TV s Mad Men), and Christopher Walken. Blunt and Dornan will play obstinate star-crossed lovers, whose families are caught up in a feud over a hotly contested patch of land that separates their two farms. (Blunt is reportedly replacing English actress Holliday Grainger, but no reason was given for the movie.). Production is scheduled to start in Ireland on September 30th, and Wild Mountain Thyme also recently acquired distribution rights in the USA.6. BILLY CRYSTAL AND TIFFANY HADDISH TO CO-STAR HERE TODAY (Photo by Ben Gabbe, Rich Fury/Getty Images)It was only a little over two years ago that Tiffany Haddish had her big breakout role in Girls Trip, and she s certainly stayed very busy since, with five movies released in 2018, another five in 2019, and a few different TV series roles as well. Tiffany Haddish is also now attached to star alongside Billy Crystal in an independent comedy called Here Today, which Crystal will also direct. Based on a short story called The Prize by screenwriter Alan Zweibel, Here Today will tell the story of a veteran comedy writer (Crystal) who is slowly but surely losing his grip on reality and befriends a talented young New York street singer (Haddish). Billy Crystal s previous directorial credits include Mr. Saturday Night, Forget Paris, and the HBO baseball period drama 61*.7. AMANDA SEYFRIED TO STAR IN DREAM WORLD OF A MOUTHFUL OF AIR (Photo by Kimberly French/©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)For obvious reasons, it s not always easy to get a firm grasp of what a movie will look like when all we have to go on is the description in a trade article, but sometimes, it s fun to imagine. This week, in a story that seemed to go relatively unreported, we learned of an independent drama called A Mouthful of Air, in which Amanda Seyfried will star, supported by a cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Finn Wittrock (TV s American Horror Story), Amy Irving (Yentl), and Jennifer Carpenter (TV s Dexter). Seyfried will play a new mom and children’s book author, who escapes into the bright Crayola colored world of her creation in order to leave behind the darkness caused by her post partum depression. It s not yet known to what degree that Crayola colored world will be depicted, but the description sort of reminds this writer of the TV show Pushing Daisies or the Robin Williams movie What Dreams May Come.8. WILL SMITH TO FOLLOW UP BRIGHT WITH COMPLETELY UNRELATED BRILLIANCE (Photo by Scott Garfield/©Netflix)Earlier this year, Disney finalized their plans to acquire the Fox film and TV properties, which excited many X-Men fans eager to see characters like Wolverine join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The bad news, however, is that X-Men wasn t included in Marvel s recent Phase 4 announcements for 2020 and 2021. Marvel doesn t have any sort of trademark on the idea of a minority of young people being born with spectacular abilities, so a novel like Marcus Sakey s Brilliance is free to explore that territory. Paramount Pictures this week acquired the film rights to Brilliance, with an eye towards Will Smith starring and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman adapting the screenplay. Goldsman previously wrote superhero movies like Batman Robin (Rotten at 11%) and worked on comic book movies like Jonah Hex (Rotten at 12%) and The Losers (Rotten at 48%). Goldsman and Smith s previous collaborations together have included Hancock (Rotten at 41%), I Am Legend (Fresh at 68%), and I, Robot (Rotten at 56%).9. SALARY DISPARITY DISPUTE ERUPTS OVER THE CRAZY RICH ASIANS SEQUELS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Not unlike Marvel s Black Panther, last year s comedy hit Crazy Rich Asians was celebrated for the positive message it sent about the possibilities of representation for all types of people both in front of and behind the camera, and the types of stories that are told. That s why this week s news about the two planned Crazy Rich Asians sequels (based on the books China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems) are particularly troubling. Screenwriter Adele Lim, who co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians with Peter Chiarelli, reportedly left the two sequel projects this week over salary disparity issues. Reportedly, Chiarelli was offered 0,000 and million for the sequels, whereas Lim was only offered a sum in the 0,000 range, representing something like a mere 11% to 13% of what Chiarelli was to be paid. The explanation reportedly given is that Chiarelli s salary offers were based upon his previous experience, as he has more credits than Lim currently does. This piece also delves into other questions that this Crazy Rich Asians controversy raises.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

Want to know if your favorite television series is among the latest cancelled TV shows? Bookmark this page to learn about Netflix cancelled shows, when network series get the axe, and which cable TV limited series are being reworked as anthologies to squeeze every single drop of fan love out of them. How it works: Renewals are obvious: new season = yay! When a network or streaming service announces that they re not making another season of a show, however, we count that as cancelled (or canceled if you spell it without SEO considerations). Sure, some shows come to a natural end, but someone somewhere said enough, and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was cancelled or retired — One Day at a Time and Marvel’s Helstrom were cancelled, but His Dark Materials will come to a natural conclusion — we re going with the one designation. Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments if you wish. But first: learn which series will live on, which were renewed and then cancelled (thanks, COVID-19), and which have simply reached their expiration date. Jerry Seinfeld Will Turn One of His Stand-Up Jokes Into a Netflix Movie About the Creation of Pop-TartsA movie about nothing? Kinda, but we still can’t wait for this one: expanding on a joke from his stand-up routine, Jerry Seinfeld will star in and direct Unfrosted, a Netflix movie all about the creation of Pop-Tarts, that classic breakfast toaster pastry. (Deadline)Seinfeld will also produce Unfrosted, which he wrote with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder. Production will begin next spring on the movie, which sparked from a joke the comedian told about the joy of discovering Pop-Tarts as a child. “How did they know that there would be a need for a frosted fruit-filled, heated rectangle in the same shape as the box it comes in, and with the same nutrition as the box it comes in?” Seinfeld mused. In 2012, Seinfeld deconstructed the joke, which he wrote across two years, and shared his joke-writing process (which famously involves yellow legal pads and Bic pens) in a New York Times video that hints at the comedic potential of Unfrosted. For the record, despite the movie’s title, we all agree that frosted Pop-Tarts are always the preferred Pop-Tarts, right?I May Destroy You, Unorthodox, Ted Lasso, and The Good Lord Bird Are Among the Year s Peabody Award Winners(Photo by Apple TV+)The Peabody Awards, for excellence in “storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day,” were announced this week, and TV-related projects recognized for the 81st annual honors include Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS), The Owl House on Disney Channel, The Good Lord Bird (Showtime), Unorthodox (Netflix), 76 Days (MTV), Whose Vote Counts on PBS, VICE on Showtime: Losing Ground (Showtime), I May Destroy You (HBO), La Llorona (Shudder), Collective (HBO Europe), Immigration Nation (Netflix), Crip Camp (Netflix),  PBS NewsHour: Coverage of the COVID-19 Pandemic (PBS), Small Axe (Amazon Prime), The Cave (NatGeo), Welcome to Chechnya (HBO), ABC News 2020: Breona Taylor (ABC), PBS NewsHour: Desperate Journey (PBS), Cops and Robbers (Netflix), and Stillwater (Apple TV+). For the complete list of winners, check out the Peabody site.In other awards news, the Critics Choice Real TV Awards were announced this week, with RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) tying for Best Competition Series with Netflix’s The Great British Baking Show; The Masked Singer (Fox) and The Voice (NBC) tying for Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety; and Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Apple TV+’s The Oprah Conversation tying for Best Structured Series. 0.18.9 9月喜迎This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Scorsese s Killers of the Flower Moon, Flash Gordon, and the Hunger Games prequel. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI S ANIMATED FLASH GORDON WILL BE LIVE ACTION INSTEAD(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images)In the summer of 2019, we first learned that Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows) had been hired to write and eventually direct an animated adaptation of the classic serial sci-fi hero Flash Gordon. This week, producer John Davis was doing the PR rounds to promote Jungle Cruise, and he gave a surprising Flash Gordon update that might actually raise the reboot s profile considerably: Instead of being an animated feature as originally planned, Taika Waititi s Flash Gordon will be live action. Although there were three Flash Gordon serials from 1936 to 1940, the character has only headlined one live-action feature film in the 80 years since, which was the 1980 Flash Gordon (Certified Fresh at 83%), starring Sam Jones with a soundtrack by Queen. We can probably expect to wait a few years for Waititi s film, however, as he also has Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), the soccer movie Next Goal Wins, We re Wolves (a mockumentary about werewolves), and his untitled Star Wars movie all currently in the works.Other Top Headlines1. BRENDAN FRASER JOINS MARTIN SCORSESE S KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Lionsgate)Brendan Fraser recently wrapped filming of Darren Aronofsky s The Whale, in which he will play a 600 lb. man seeking to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (played by Sadie Sink from Stranger Things). Now, Fraser is quickly moving from working with one acclaimed director to another, as he has joined the cast of Killers of the Flower Moon, the next film from Martin Scorsese. Fraser will play lawyer W.S. Hamilton in the Apple TV+ and Paramount Pictures feature film, which is based on the true crime story originally depicted in the nonfiction book of the same title by David Grann. Fraser joins a cast that includes Jesse Plemons (in a lead role) and frequent Scorsese collaborators (and Academy Award winners) Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Brendan Fraser has also joined the cast of Brothers, the next movie from director Max Barbakow (Palm Springs, Certified Fresh at 95%).2. JOHN WICK DIRECTOR CHAD STAHELSKI TAKING ON ASSASSIN NOVEL SHIBUMI (Photo by Isa Foltin/Getty Images)Authors nowadays just don t have cool pen names as often as they used to. Trevanian was the nom de plume of an American writer who specialized in airport novels, the most famous of which was probably The Eiger Sanction, which was adapted as the eponymous 1975 assassin movie (Fresh at 68%) starring Clint Eastwood. Chad Stahelski is the stuntman-turned-director behind the John Wick franchise, which is also about a deadly assassin, so you can probably guess where this is going. Even as he s about to begin filming John Wick 4, Stahelski has started developing an adaptation of the 1979 Trevanian novel Shibumi, about an assassin who is recruited to take on a conspiracy of energy companies that secretly controls much of the western world. It s worth noting that Stahelski is accruing a large development slate, of which Shibumi is just the latest, so it will have to wait its turn alongside such projects as Ghost of Tsushima, Classified, Kill or Be Killed, and the Highlander reboot.3. HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)The Young Adult (YA) novel-based movie fad came and went so quickly that it might seem odd to realize that the very first installment of The Hunger Games (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out as recently as nine years ago, and the last movie was only six years ago. That four-film franchise was a huge financial boon to Lionsgate, which grossed nearly billion worldwide from it, but when it ended in 2015, it also left a big, blockbuster-sized hole for them to fill in their production calendar. Luckily for them, author Suzanne Collins published a prequel novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last year. During a quarterly earnings call this week, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake confirmed that filming of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is expected to start in the first half of 2022, aiming for a theatrical release in late 2023 or early 2024. The prequel will tell the story of the 18-year-old (future President) Coriolanus Snow as he gets his chance to be a mentor during the Tenth Hunger Games. Presumably, whoever lands the lead role will resemble a very young Donald Sutherland.4. NICHOLAS HOULT TO STAR AS CREEPY DRACULA HENCHMAN RENFIELD (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bram Stoker s Dracula has the distinction of being the most frequently adapted literary character in film (Sherlock Holmes is the most adapted human literary character). With that many movie versions of Dracula, there have also been dozens of portrayals of his insane, bug-munching human henchman Renfield, but usually as a supporting character. Always looking to continue their Universal Classic Monsters franchise, Universal Pictures is now developing a solo movie for Renfield, with Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class) attached to star. Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) will direct Renfield from a screenplay by Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley, based on an original screenplay by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible). Although no specific premise details have been revealed yet, the setting is believed to be in the modern day, not in the Victorian Era England of the original novel.5. SNL S COLIN JOST CO-WRITING A NEW TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES REBOOT (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a way more complicated history than the casual observer might expect (and it goes all the way back to their start as a grim and gritty Daredevil spoof indie comic book). Besides the first three live-action films, there was also an animated movie in 2007 and a pair of more recent live-action movies in 2014 and 2016 with the turtles as CGI characters (and that s without getting into all the TMNT movies that didn t happen). Last year, we first heard that Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg were developing a CGI reboot feature film with Nickelodeon, but as it turns out, that is now just one of two reboots being developed concurrently. Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost and his brother Casey Jost will also write a second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot for Paramount Pictures. The division between the two reboots seems to be that the Jost brothers are working on a version closer to the gritty comic book origins, while Seth Rogen s is more lighthearted like the 1980s animated TV series. The Jost brothers version will also probably come later than Seth Rogen s, which is currently scheduled for August 11, 2023.6. CHRONICLE SEQUEL FINALLY HAPPENING WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAST (Photo by Alan Markfield/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Up above, we touched upon the came-and-went YA novel adaptation fad, and another trend that has largely fallen out of vogue is the found footage genre first popularized by The Blair Witch Project. For a while, found footage was a lucrative format that gave Hollywood a few surprise hits (such as the Paranormal Activity franchise) and the 2012 superhero drama Chronicle (Certified Fresh at 85%). There was talk for years about a Chronicle sequel, but the personal developments for some of the creatives involved seemed to decrease the chances of that happening, to the point where director Josh Trank said in 2020 that he actively worked to prevent it. As it turns out, however, Jungle Cruise producer John Davis does indeed plan on moving forward with a Chronicle sequel, although it may be a very different film than was originally planned. This sequel will be set about 10 years after the original Chronicle (suggesting filming in 2022?) and will revolve around a group of female college students who discover that they are the next generation with super powers. Davis also did not clarify whether the found footage technique would be used for the Chronicle sequel.7. POPULAR SQUISHMALLOWS PILLOWS TO EXPAND INTO FILM, TV, AND GAMES(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Some trends blow up simply by being the right idea at the right time. Consider, for example, the case of the Squishmallows, an expansive line (1,000+) of character-themed huggable pillows that first launched in 2017 as sort of a cross between pillows, anime influences, and the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s. Squishmallows may have eventually become popular in any case, but their expansion may have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with people seeking something adorable to hug while stuck at home for months. Jazwares, the company behind Squishmallows, is seeking to build upon their newfound success by partnering with the powerful Creative Artists Agency (CAA). CAA will work with Jazware to push the Squishmallows franchise into film, TV, video games, publishing, and live touring. So that doesn t mean that there is a Squishmallows movie project in development just yet, but it certainly sounds like it s just a matter of time.On an Apple device? King of the Crop: Tyler Perry’s Madea Does Good All By Itself(Photo by @ Lionsgate)When the name Madea features in a Tyler Perry movie title, those films average a .7 million opening and a final gross of .6 million. A Madea Family Funeral may be right in line with that first number when the final estimates come out on Monday, starting with .8 million and – if the average multiple of the Madea films is any indication – it should finish up between - million. Only Boo 2! A Madea Halloween and A Madea Christmas opened to less than million, and the former is the only Madea film to finish with less than million. Perry’s latest film, if the Tomatometer score holds, will find itself amongst the top five rated films of his career.Rotten Returns: Audiences Not So Obsessed with Greta, But Critics Are Split(Photo by Jonathan Hession / Focus Features)Focus Features went wide with Neil Jordan’s Greta, the director s first wide release since 2007’s The Brave One. It is the 19th film in Focus s history to open on more than 2,000 screens and unfortunately its .58 million start ranks as the worst opening amongst them, lower than the animated Ratchet Clank (.86 million) and the Ryan Reynolds-led sci-fi film, Self/Less (.4 million). Interview with the Vampire and The Brave One are the only previous films of Jordan’s career to launch in more than 2,000 theaters, so that alone is a bit of a compliment on behalf of Focus even if the result is not what they had hoped. Critics, though, are fairly evenly split on Greta, with the film currently just shy of Fresh on the Tomatometer at 57%.The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Dragon and Alita Hoping for Big International Numbers(Photo by @ DreamWorks Animation)Last week, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World joined 21 other films to open between million and million. This week, the final chapter to the critically acclaimed trilogy (all three films are over 90% on the Tomatometer) only beat 14 of those films in their second weekend. However, after 10 days, its total gross is only ahead of five of those 21: Watchmen (.75 million), The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (.83 million), Divergent (.37 million), The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (.58 million), and The Incredible Hulk (.05 million). This 45% drop has taken away much of the hope that The Hidden World would surpass the 7 million of the second film and only adds to industry anxiety about the state of this year’s box office (down nearly 30% from 2018). But for Universal and DreamWorks Animation, the film is just about in profit thanks to a global total of over 5 million, which should continue to grow into a very healthy take. Also banking on its international numbers is Fox’s Alita: Battle Angel, which is up to 0 million globally but just million domestic and unlikely to break 0 million. The film still needs, conservatively, another 0 million to break even. But as box office watchers of The Meg can attest to – that film came so close last summer to recouping its costs – anything is possible. WB’s The Lego Movie 2 is coming up well shy of its predecessors, and with a drop to .6 million this week is looking like finishing somewhere between Interview with the Vampire and Trainwreck in the 5-0 million region.Green Book’s Best Picture bump helped it pass million this weekend. Post-Valentine’s Day, What Men Want is about to cross million, while Isn’t It Romantic may come up just short of that. Happy Death Day 2U and Fighting With My Family may not do million combined. In limited release, Apollo 11, which is Certified Fresh at a perfect 100% on the Tomatometer, made .65 million in just 120 theaters for the third highest per-theater-average of the week of ,750. Christian Petzold’s Transit (96% on the Tomatometer) was second with a ,684 average in two theaters while Gaspar Noé’s Climax (77% on the Tomatometer) from A24 made 1,655 in 10 theaters for a top average of ,331.This Time Last Year: Black Panther Enters Third Week of Domination(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)Black Panther led the pack for the third straight week with .3 million, the second biggest third weekend of all time. Revenge then followed in the form of Jennifer Lawrence and Bruce Willis with Red Sparrow (.8 million) and Eli Roth’s remake of Death Wish ( million). Neither film would go on to gross as much as Panther’s third weekend, which put it over the 0 million mark. The top 10 films grossed 4.2 million and averaged 57.4% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 made an estimated .5 million and averaged 59.1% with critics. On the Vine: Captain Marvel Here to Save the 2019 Box Office?(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)The biggest movie of 2019 (to date) arrives as Marvel’s Captain Marvel enters theaters. The Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck-directed film with Brie Larson is poised to have the first 0 million opening of the year. And then some. Interest is very high in the film that could ultimately put up Hunger Games/Wonder Woman numbers here in the States. The last 10 live-action Marvel films have grossed at least 0 million worldwide. Only 11 films in 2018 reached that marker and five of them were based on Marvel properties. The Full Top 10: March 1-3How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90% – .04 million (.69 million total)Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral (2019) 11% – .95 million (.05 million total)Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% –  million (.23 million total)The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) 84% – .61 million (.67 million total)Green Book (2018) 77% – .71 million (.92 million total)Fighting With My Family (2019) 93% – .69 million (.94 million total)Isn't It Romantic (2019) 70% – .64 million (.29 million total)Greta (2018) 60% – .58 million (.58 million total)What Men Want (2019) 41% – .7 million (.64 million total)Happy Death Day 2U (2019) 71% – .51 million (.28 million total)

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as the Sopranos prequel, the Sesame Street musical, and Marvel s Shang-Chi.This WEEK S TOP STORYJAMES GUNN REINSTATED AS DIRECTOR OF GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3(Photo by Jay Maidment/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)One of the biggest stories of 2018 was Disney s decision to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn from the third GotG movie over old-but-questionable Twitter jokes, which led stars like Dave Bautista to say he/they might not return for the sequel. Warner Bros. then signed Gunn to write and direct The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), starring Margot Robbie and Idris Elba. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is obviously a big deal for Marvel, and we never heard anything about a new director officially taking his place (notwithstanding Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, who quickly debunked such rumors). So, we can now report that Disney and Marvel have reached an agreement that reinstates James Gunn as director (and screenwriter) for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will start filming after Gunn wraps filming of The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Gunn s apologies for the Tweets (which predated his hiring for the first Guardians of the Galaxy) were reportedly key to Disney President Alan Horn s decision to rehire him for GotG 3. After the announcement was made, Gunn took to Twitter again, this time to thank his fans for their support.Fresh Developments1. MARVEL FAST-TRACKING KUNG FU SUPERHERO SHANG-CHI MOVIE (Photo by Marvel)Although Marvel Studios has not officially announced release dates for new movies past this summer s Spider-Man: Far from Home (7/5/2019), we do know that both Black Widow and The Eternals are scheduled to start filming this summer for likely 2020 releases. (Marvel has untitled films scheduled for release on May 1 and November 6 next year.) 2018 was a big year for Marvel developing new movies, as Black Widow and The Eternals were also joined by Doctor Strange 2, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), and Shang Chi: Master of Kung Fu. This week, Marvel made a move that suggests Shang-Chi is getting fast-tracked for a likely 2021 release, with the news that the directing job is going to Destin Daniel Cretton. This news also confirms that Marvel is applying a Black Panther-style production approach to Shang-Chi, as Cretton is Hawaiian and screenwriter Dave Callaham is of Chinese-American descent. Cretton s hiring is also a sign that Brie Larson might co-star as Captain Marvel in the Shang-Chi movie, as she has starred in all of Cretton s films as director (Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, and the upcoming Just Mercy, with Michael B. Jordan). Callaham s Shang-Chi screenplay reportedly attempts to modernize aspects of the character s back story, which drew heavily from 1970s exploitation tropes.2. AVENGERS DIRECTORS SIGN ON FOR POST-MARVEL REUNION WITH SPIDER-MAN(Photo by Michael Germana/Everett Collection)Next month s Avengers: Endgame will be the fourth Marvel Studios film for directing brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, with no indication (yet) that they ll direct any future Marvel films. After 5+ years of focusing on their Marvel work, the Russo brothers are now lining up a movie that is only tangentially related to the studio, as Marvel s current Spider-Man, Tom Holland, is now in talks to work with them on a film called Cherry. If he signs, Holland would star as Nico Walker, the author of the 2018 novel Cherry, based on his own experience as an Army medic who returned from Iraq with extreme undiagnosed PTSD, fell into opioid addiction and began robbing banks. Walker was caught and convicted in 2011 and is scheduled to be released in 2020. The Russo Brothers plan to start filming Cherry this summer. Meanwhile, they will also continue to produce TV adaptations of the 1979 film The Warriors and the horror video game Little Nightmares.3. SOPRANOS PREQUEL MOVIE NABS 2020 AWARDS SEASON RELEASE (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Later this year, Netflix is reportedly planning on their widest theatrical release to date for Martin Scorsese s fact-based crime film The Irishman, produced on a budget of over 5 million. The Irishman doesn t have a release date yet, but it seems likely to be aiming for the fall of 2019 during awards season. If The Irishman is 2019 s top awards-friendly mobster movie, HBO made a move this week to possibly stake out the same distinction in 2020. New Line Cinema has scheduled the newly retitled Newark (formerly The Many Saints of Newark), the prequel film to HBO s The Sopranos, for September 25, 2020. Newark will be set during the 1967 Newark riots. Although we still lack some key details, we do already know that Alessandro Nivola will be the star as Dickie Moltisanti (Christopher s dad), and that James Gandolfini s son Michael Gandolfini is co-starring as the young Tony Soprano.  In related news, MGM also recently scheduled their musical biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin, for August 14, 2020.4. TOM AND JERRY AND ANNE HATHAWAY S SESAME STREET COMING IN 2021(Photo by Giles Keyte/Focus Features)Following the box office disappointment of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Warner Bros. is moving away from its plans for Minecraft and more LEGO movies. Instead, the studio is working on animated movies like Scooby-Doo (5/15/2020) and DC Super Pets (5/21/2021). Warner Bros added two more kid-friendly movies to their 2021 schedule this week with Sesame Street and Tom and Jerry. Anne Hathaway will star in the live-action Sesame Street musical now scheduled for January 15, 2021 (two weeks before Rugrats on 1/29/2021). The Tom and Jerry will be an animated/live action hybrid when it comes out on April 16, 2021 (two weeks after Fast and Furious 10 on 4/2/2021).5. ANDY SAMBERG AND CRISTIN MILIOTI TO MEET CUTE IN PALM SPRINGS (Photo by Jason Mendez, Steve Mack/Everett Collection)We re just barely starting to see a resurgence of the romantic comedy genre with movies like Isn t It Romantic and various titles on Netflix and the Hallmark Channel, but new projects are being announced regularly lately. Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) will co-star with Cristin Miloti (who starred in the U.S.S. Callister episode of Black Mirror) in a romantic comedy called Palm Springs. Samberg will play a carefree man who meets a reluctant maid of honor [in] a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding. J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man 2) will also have a supporting role.

sidered the open fifth slot in the Best Actor race (noms for Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Antonio Banderas were considered locks). Uncut Gems, in which Sandler plays a Diamond District gem dealer with a gambling problem and a complicated love life, is one of the actor’s best-reviewed movies, according to the Tomatometer.SURPRISE: Two Popes, Two Noms Jonathan Pryce Takes Coveted Fifth Slot in Best Actor Race, Anthony Hopkins Up for Supporting(Photo by Peter Mountain/©Netflix)As we said above, four of the Best Actor slots were seen as sure things going into Monday – Joaquin Phoenix, Adam Driver, Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio – with the fifth slot considered open. Would it be Golden Globe-winner Taron Egerton for his portrayal of Elton John? Or Robert De Niro for his take on Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran? Turns out the fabulous pop star and the bloody house-painter would have to step aside for none other than his Holiness, Pope Francis, as played by Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce in Netflix’s Two Popes. The film generally made more of an impression than some were expecting, picking up noms not just for Pryce but also for co-star Anthony Hopkins, and for Best Adapted Screenplay.SNUB: Awkwafina and Lupita Nyong o Get No Love(Photo by ©A24, Claudette Barius/©Universal)Considering Awkwafina racked up a ton of nominations from critics groups, and Lupita Nyong o has been winning the Best Actress award from a lot of those same groups, it certainly came as a shock when neither of them managed to land a nod from the Oscars. The former earned rave reviews and a Golden Globes win for her nuanced work as a frustrated granddaughter coming to terms with her grandmother s terminal illness in Lulu Wang s deeply personal dramedy The Farewell, while the latter s dual turn, both as a mother trying to protect her family and as her evil doppelgänger, in Jordan Peele s Us blew everyone away and earned her a SAG Award nomination. Unfortunately, neither was good enough to merit a spot in the Academy s top five.SURPRISE: Cynthia Erivo Just an Oscar Win Away from EGOT STatus(Photo by Focus Features)Cynthia Erivo was always a chance for a nomination for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in Focus Features’ rousing Harriet, but pundits favored Golden Globe winner Awkwafina for what was seen as the category’s open fifth slot. With The Farewell completely snubbed this morning, including its lead Awkwafina, the slot was open, and it went, as some expected, to Broadway star Erivo, who’s earned praise for a string of film roles over the last two years (Widows, Bad Times At The El Royale). Lupita Nyong’o and Alfre Woodard had been her fiercest competition for the coveted opening. The nomination puts Erivo one step closer to EGOT status, having earned a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy for her role as Celie in Broadway musical The Color Purple – she got her Daytime Emmy for a performance from the production on The Today Show. The smart money would say it’s not her year for a win, but as we’ve seen this morning, the Academy never ceases to surprise.SNUB: Apollo 11 Grounded by the Academy(Photo by ©Neon)The Best Documentary category may not be the most glamorous, but there was one film most believed would at least make the list, if not win it entirely. Apollo 11, the stunning chronicle of the eponymous space mission brought to life solely through archival footage, wowed critics to the tune of a near-unanimous Certified Fresh 99% on the Tomatometer, and it s been plowing through awards season picking up trophies from all of the major critics organizations. Alas, none of it was enough to earn recognition from the Academy, who, among their selections for Best Documentary, curiously saw fit instead to include Netflix s The Edge of Democracy, which isn t a bad film by any means, but it hasn t been nominated for pretty much anything else.SURPRISE: Honeyland Makes History (Photo by Ljubomir Stevanov/©Neon)North Macedonian film Honeyland quietly made history this morning, becoming the first movie nominated for both Best Documentary (Feature) and Best International Feature Film (the category formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film). It made history, too, as only the second North Macedonian movie to ever receive a nomination for the international category (the first was for the 1994 film Before the Rain). The film, shot over three years in a fly-on-the-wall style, focuses on a woman who uses ancient beekeeping techniques and traditions to produce honey in the Macedonian mountains, and the tensions that arise when a new nomadic family arrives and interferes with her livelihood. It remains one of the best-reviewed movies of 2019, Certified Fresh at 99% on the Tomatometer. [Editor s note: An earlier version of this story stated that Honeyland was the first nominated North Macedonian film; it is actually the second.]SNUB: Monday Morning’s Alright (For Fighting) for Largely Ignored Rocketman(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)No need to clean your rose-tinted shades: Your eyes don’t deceive you – Elton John biopic was snubbed in a number of surprising categories. Perhaps the biggest shock was that Taron Egerton, who plays John in the film and took home a Golden Globe for his efforts (and sang all of his own vocals), missed out on a nomination for Best Actor. Other shockers for Rocketman: No love for Best Costume Design or Makeup and Hairstyling. The movie earned its sole nomination in the category of Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin.SURPRISE: That Toy Story 4 Song You Forgot About Is Up for an Oscar(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)Did you even remember that Randy Newman had a song in Toy Story 4? Because we’ll be honest, we’d kinda forgotten (and so had most pundits, with the song barely registering a blip on the prognostication radar ahead of this morning’s nominations). But he does, and it’s called “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” and it’s just been nominated for Best Original Song, pushing Beyoncé’s “Spirit” from The Lion King out of contention. The Newman song might be the most literal of the nominated tunes this year, playing over a montage of incidences in which Forky tries to throw himself away, and, well, Woody just can’t let him. This is Newman’s 21st Oscar nomination, and fourth Best Original Song nomination for a Toy Story movie.SNUB: Lulu Wang s The Farewell Shut Out Entirely(Photo by A24)We ve already covered how Awkwafina and Shuzhen Zhao were snubbed in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories above, but considering how much of a phenomenon The Farewell was, it s incredible that it failed to garner any nominations at all. If the acting categories were too crowded, we thought perhaps writer-director Lulu Wang stood a chance of competing for Best Original Screenplay, but even there, she was supplanted by Sam Mendes  1917, whose Writers Guild Award nomination was the first recognition of the film s writing all season. Ever since The Farewell premiered, we ve been expecting to see it make some sort of appearance at the Oscars, but it looks like that s not going to happen after all.SURPRISE: Scarlett Johansson Earns Double Nominations, Joining Prestigious Company(Photo by ©Netflix, Larry Horricks/©Fox Searchlight Pictures)Maybe she can play a tree… Scarlett Johansson earned the distinction of being twice-nominated in a single year for her work in Marriage Story (Best Actress In a Leading Role) and in Jojo Rabbit (Best Actress In a Supporting Role). Johansson becomes just the 12th actor ever to be nominated for two awards in the same year, and, interestingly, one of her fellow nominees this year is among those names: Al Pacino was nominated for both Scent Of A Woman and Glengarry Glen Ross at the 65th Academy Awards. The last actor to earn double nominations in a single year was Cate Blanchett, nominated for Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I’m Not There at the 80th Awards. Double nominations seem to neither be a disadvantage nor advantage, with seven of the 11 past double nominees managing to win one of their awards, though no one has ever won both.SNUB: Dolemite Ignored Across the Board, Including for Best Costumes (What!?)(Photo by Francois Duhamel/Netflix)Adam Sandler wasn’t the only dark-horse SNL alum to miss out on a Best Actor slot this morning: Eddie Murphy, whose Dolemite Is My Name is one of the best-reviewed comedies of the year and whom many thought could ride the cresting Eddie-aissance to an Oscar nom, got no love today, and neither did the film generally, earning a total of zero nominations. The biggest snub for the Netflix comedy arguably came in the Costume Design category, where Ruth E. Carter, who took home the Oscar in the category last year for Black Panther, was considered a shoo-in and a favorite to win. Joker, on the other hand, was the surprise nominee for Best Costume Design, edging out Dolemite and Elton John biopic Rocketman.SURPRISE: Klaus Edges Out Frozen II in A Battle of Winter Animation(Photo by ©Netflix)We re not saying Klaus isn t a terrific film, because it is it s Certified Fresh at 93% with an Audience Score of 98% but that doesn t mean it s any less surprising that it managed to nab a nomination for Best Animated Feature over Frozen II. This is the first time since 2011 s Winnie the Pooh that a Walt Disney Animation film hasn t been nominated for the Oscar, and it s worth noting that the first Frozen even went on to win back in 2013. It used to be conventional wisdom that Disney s animated films and Pixar s various offerings would almost be guaranteed to earn Oscar nods, but this is just more evidence that times are changing, and there are more and more studios taking risks and producing incredible work in animation. The 92nd Academy Awards will be celebrated on Sunday, February 8 at 5pm PT /8pm ET and broadcast live on ABC.Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? Ghcxuf Where do you go after Game of Thrones? For the creators of the hit HBO fantasy series, it s Star Wars and now Netflix. Plus, this year s Emmy Awards show is going hostless. Bold. But perhaps not as bold as the timing of FX s next American Crime Story  topic.Game of Thrones Creators Find Their New TV HomeDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an overall deal to develop new films and series for Netflix pic.twitter.com/57gLQOSTLE See What s Next (@seewhatsnext) August 7, 2019Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their new home: Netflix. The duo has signed what sources told Deadline is a massive deal somewhere in the nine-figure range, after being courted by six different studios, including HBO. We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home, the pair said in a statement. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same 80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them. The duo is also set to produce a series of Star Wars films, with the first expected in 2022.RELATED: 5 Places Star Wars Could Go in the 2020s There Won t Be an Emmys Host This Year(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Fox boss Charlie Collier confirmed to reporters at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour that, like the Oscars, there will be no host for the 2019 Emmys. Later that day, former Golden Globes host Amy Poehler said she understands the reluctance of people to sign on for such a massive gig. Those shows are a beast and the people who produce those shows have a specific, hard job, she said. But without a host, It should be a fun party. Think about how fun it is to go to a party, and you don t know who s throwing it. Your brain will probably decide who the host is. Could the New Season of American Crime Story Influence the 2020 Election?(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Immediately after FX announced that Impeachment would be the theme for the third season of American Crime Story, will focus on Bill Clinton s impeachment through the eyes of the women involved in the case (starring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky), and will premiere in late September 2020, an online backlash began denouncing the timing of the series. FX boss John Landgraf hit back at critics of the timing, saying that it s scheduled then because people will be interested in this right around the presidential election. I believe very, very strongly in what we’re making. I’ve read it. I think it’s great, Landgraf said. I don’t believe it’s going to determine who’s the next president of the United States. I think that’s a little hysterical, from my standpoint, somebody saying that that’s going to influence the presidential election. And from my standpoint, I am insistent that I’m going to support artists who want to make great art, and they want to put it at the time and place where people are going to watch it. I will stand up here as long as I’m here, and I will stand for artists, and I will stand for art. And no one will shout us down in terms of you saying, You can’t make that art, or You can’t schedule at the time that most people want to watch it. ”Fleabag Takes Top Honors at Television Critics Association Awards Breezy, isn t it? Phoebe Waller-Bridge commented to journalists Laura Prudom and Emma Dibdin, who both wore her black Fleabag season 2 dinner scene outfit to present the Television Critics Association award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy to the series. Fleabag also won Program of the Year and Individual Achievement in Comedy for star and creator Waller-Bridge when the industry organization handed out its annual honors on August 03, 2019 in Beverly Hills. The awards included:Individual Achievement in Drama: Michelle Williams (FOSSE/VERDON, FX)Individual Achievement in Comedy: Phoebe Waller-Bridge (FLEABAG, Amazon)Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: LEAVING NEVERLAND (HBO)Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming: QUEER EYE (Netflix)Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming: ARTHUR (PBS Kids)Outstanding Achievement in Sketch/Variety Shows: LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER (HBO)Outstanding New Program: RUSSIAN DOLL (Netflix)Outstanding Achievement in Movie Or Miniseries: CHERNOBYL (HBO)Outstanding Achievement in Drama: BETTER CALL SAUL (AMC)Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: FLEABAG (Amazon)Program of the Year: FLEABAG (Amazon)Lifetime Achievement Honoree: David MilchHeritage Award: DEADWOOD (HBO)Supernatural Says Goodbye to the Winchester Brothers(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)As Supernatural heads into its 15th and final season, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki reflected on the past and future of their demon-hunting brother characters. I don’t think these guys look in the past very often, unless it’s to help moving forward. I think they will continue to move forward, but this is just it’s a long journey that I don’t think is ever going to be over, Ackles said . I think we’re just going to go away for a while. How long, I don’t know. Cracked Padalecki, And then 15 more seasons. But while Ackles noted there’s a running joke on the set that this is Supernatural, and nothing ever stays dead, executive producer Andrew Dabb said that he and the writers are planning a definitive ending. We’re looking at this as a true ending. And in a true ending, people can’t keep coming back over and over again. Through various machinations, some of the things that our guys have relied on to keep themselves going and going and going no matter what are going to go away. And they’re going to be facing life or death. Really, they face it a lot, but this time it’s for real, Dabb said. The Boys Is One of Amazon s Biggest Shows Ever(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)In the two weeks following its release, Amazon superhero series The Boys has already become one of the streamer s most-watched series. From executive producers Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Preacher executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys tells the story of entitled, dangerous superheroes managed by the nefarious Vought Corporation and the vigilantes seeking vengeance for wrongs committed by members of the Seven, the crème de la crème of the Vought superhero machine. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said the series surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers.” The series also became one of the most binged series of 2019 with Amazon Prime Video customers, Amazon reported in a release. The first season is Certified Fresh at 81% on the Tomatometer with 74 reviews. Season 2 is now in production.RELATED:  Why The Boys’ Twisted Take on the Superhero Genre Is So Deeply Satisfying Teen Sleuth Nancy Drew Gets a Supernatural UpdateThe Nancy Drew novels have always contained a possible supernatural element that always turned out to be of human nature. But on The CW s dark series featuring the classic teen detective, that supernatural element might be a little more real. There are ghosts in our show, executive producer Noga Landau said. The way to really look at it is that most of the things that are supernatural are rooted in something that’s happening mysteriously in the real world. Everything is rooted in emotion or some mystery amongst the living that has been unresolved. And while there will be a season-long mystery the characters solve, there will also be some case-of-the-week elements. The case in the pilot is the case that we will be unraveling through the course of the season,  executive producer Melinda Hsu Taylor said, but every week there’s going to be a feel of, like, Oh, this is the story this week. We’ve got this part of the mission to unfold, and another little mini mystery will become revealed to us through the things that we’re doing in that episode. I think it’s a really satisfying season-long mystery, but every week is going to be very satisfying as well. When Will Batwoman Don Her Wig?(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)When the character of Batwoman was first introduced to The CW s Arrowverse in the 2018 Elseworlds crossover, she was wearing the character s trademark red wig. But in the pilot for the CW series, which takes place before the events of Elseworlds, there s no wig in sight. That’s going to come up in episode 3, when she really embraces her role as Batwoman, executive producer Caroline Dries said. She puts on that suit, as we see in the pilot, because she’s trying to scare her enemy. And she’s not necessarily trying to become Batwoman. She’s just trying to be disguise her identity and be a fearful opponent to her nemesis. So she it’s a gradual story. It’s an origin story, so it’s a gradual realization of, Oh, actually, I’m going to need my own identity.' In the upcoming crossover, the epic five-show Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dries worked hard to make sure the story line for Batwoman still made sense in the universe of the series. [What] was really important to me as we were breaking the crossover is that I want to keep the tone of our show in Gotham very grounded, she said. We are just starting out, and our characters — it’s not normal for them to interact with aliens and travel to different universes and stuff like that, so that is the first thing I brought up to the major writers’ room as we were breaking the crossover. How Will Black Lightning Join the Arrowverse?(Photo by Josh Stringer/The CW )In addition to the whopping five shows joining The CW s annual Arrowverse crossover — Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman —  Crisis on Infinite Earths will also introduce characters from the network s other superhero series, Black Lightning. Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim said it was always the goal to make this crossover the biggest ever. Ever since we started talking about doing Crisis — and we started it last year — the goal has always been how many different corners of the DC Universe can we touch? We already say, It’s not Crisis on CW, or It’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. And Black Lightning just makes so much sense. I’m a huge fan of that show, and I’m a longtime fan of that comic character. What it really came down to was Salim Akil deciding whether he wanted to do it. He and I had a great conversation last week talking about Black Lightning being part of the crossover. I think we’re both really jazzed and really excited that there are some phenomenal possibilities here. We re now in the heart of the summer movie season, so it shouldn t shock anyone to learn that the movies audiences are most looking forward to include a Pixar film, a superhero blockbuster, and a sci-fi adventure. What might be more surprising is that, in a triumph of counterprogramming, a high-concept fantasy musical and a deadpan zombie comedy also made the list. Read on to find out the five most anticipated movies by Rotten Tomatoes users and our fans on social media in June.1. Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%9,043 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fans, #2 pick by our Twitter fansOpens June 21Toy Story 3 gave us all a satisfying, emotional franchise finale, so it was something of a surprise when we learned the good folks at Pixar were planning to revive the series with a fourth installment. That hasn t dampened the enthusiasm for the series, though, as Toy Story 4 sits comfortably at the top of this month s list of most anticipated movies. Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang plus an old friend and some new additions are on hand to continue the story as Andy s younger sister Bonnie makes a new toy at school who s not so thrilled about being a toy. This one topped our Facebook and Instagram polls, and easily amassed the most Want-to-See votes.2. Dark Phoenix (2019) 22%5,982 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Twitter fans, #3 pick by our Facebook fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens June 7With the recent acquisition of Fox s film and TV branches by Disney, it s probably going to be some time before we see the X-Men back on the big screen, so Dark Phoenix might be the last we see of the series for the foreseeable future (we re thinking of New Mutants as sort of an offshoot of the main series). With that in mind, it s probably appropriate that the existing franchise is going out with a bang, adapting one of the most iconic stories from the comics. Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and the rest of the younger, soft-rebooted mutants return to explore the darker side of Turner s Jean Grey, who becomes unstable after a mysterious encounter in space. This one resonated the most with our Twitter fans, and it amassed the second-highest number of Want-to-See votes.3a. Men in Black: International (2019) 23%3,268 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #5 pick by our Facebook fansOpens June 14Next up, we ve got a tie for third, so we ll start with the revival of the Men in Black franchise. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are nowhere to be found at least, that s what we assume, barring a surprise cameo from them in the movie and this time, the focus shifts to MiB s London branch, where a rookie agent played by Tessa Thompson is partnered up with Chris Hemsworth s veteran Agent H to track down a mole in the organization. Here s hoping the chemistry they displayed in Thor: Ragnarok wasn t a fluke.3b. Yesterday (2019) 63% (Photo by Stefania D'Alessandro/WireImage)After James Gunn was fired from directing Marvel’s third Guardians of the Galaxy film, fans wondered whether Taika Waititi – who made Marvel’s critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarock, which contained much more humor than previous films starring the God of Thunder – could and would take over the franchise. He told reporters in Los Angeles on Monday that he is definitely not directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3.“For me, those are James s films,” he told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters after a panel for FX’s What We Do in the Shadows adaptation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, would feel like going into someone s house and going, ‘Hey, I m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It just feels kind of awkward. I just wouldn t know how to follow up those two films because those are his babies.”Waititi is still in conversation with Marvel about future films, however.“I’m not doing that movie, but I’m still hanging out with those guys and talking about new stuff,” he confirmed. “I don t know what it might be yet, but, yeah, I want to do another movie with them for sure.

(Photo by Eric Milner / Orion Pictures / Everett Collection)According to the “Horror Remake Tomatometer Predictor”™ (not a thing, and definitely not trademarked), the upcoming Child’s Play remake has a 43.2% chance of having a Fresh Tomatometer score. Why? The 1988 original, about a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray continuing his deadly rampage after his soul is voodoo d into a doll (made sense in the 1980s), sits at 67% on the Tomatometer. The Fresh score of the original means the 2019 remake has a better chance of achieving critical glory than a remake with Rotten source material, which only has an 11% chance of being Fresh.Yes, we’re getting nerdy. How do we know this? We did a deep dive into the Tomatometer and pulled the data on 91 horror remakes, reboots, and adaptations, so we could drop some fun Tomatometer stats on you. We’re hoping the Child’s Play remake can break the curse of the Rotten remakes, and do what the A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remakes couldn’t do — be Fresh.Quick note: We included horror remakes, reboots, and second adaptations of novels (think Pet Sematary from earlier this year). To avoid using the confusing and super-hyphenated “remake/reboot/adaptations,” for every section, we’re using “remake” as a blanket term for all the movies.1. The Average Tomatometer Score for Horror Remakes is 44.4%(Photo by IFC Midnight/ Everett Collection)The Rotten 44.4% Tomatometer average is a long way away from the 79.2% Tomatometer average of the originals in our sample, and we’re not quite sure why that’s the case. However, after watching One Missed Call (0%, 2008), Cabin Fever (0%, 2016), and Flatliners (4%,  2017), we have a pretty good idea why the average for remakes is so Rotten.2. Fresh Horror Remakes Come from Originals with an 87.6% Tomatometer Average(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp./Everett Collection)You are probably thinking, “So good remakes come from good originals? Duh, I could’ve told you that,” and that is reasonable. However, now you can add, “Rotten Tomatoes data backs it up.” The 33 Fresh remakes in our list came from originals with an 87.6% Tomatometer average. Also, remakes of horror movies with an 87%-plus Tomatometer score have a 55% Tomatometer average, which is higher than the 44.4% overall average for remakes. In other words, producers looking for some form of critical praise should consider remaking super Fresh horror classics.3. Rotten Horror Remakes Come from Originals with a 74% Tomatometer Average(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The 58 Rotten remakes we analyzed came mostly from Fresh, but not super Fresh, originals. Classics like Halloween (95%, 1978), House of Wax (95%, 1933), and Psycho (97%, 1960) did some heavy Tomatometer lifting, but, overall, only 20 of the 58 (or 33.8%) original horror movies in the set had Tomatometer scores over 90%. The strength of these classics kept the Tomatometer average Fresh, but they had to combat the 15 Rotten originals such as Prom Night (45%, 1980), When a Stranger Calls (31%, 1979), and The Amityville Horror (29%, 1979) for Tomatometer respectability.4. Only Two Fresh Remakes Came from the 17 Rotten Originals(Photo by New Line/ Everett Collection)If the source material is Rotten, odds are the remake will be Rotten as well. By all accounts, it seems obvious that Rotten movies would breed Rotten remakes. However, you’d think the writers, producers, and directors went into the remakes thinking they could easily improve upon the critically panned original. Only The Town That Dreaded Sundown (70%, 2014) and Willard (64%, 2003) were able to overcome their Rotten roots, but, even then, they weren’t able to achieve boss-level 90%-plus Tomatometer scores.5. Only Five Horror Remakes Have 90%-Plus Tomatometer Scores(Photo by United Artists/ Everett Collection)There are some 33 originals in our set with 90%-plus Tomatometer scores, but just five remakes that scored 90% and above. There is some good news though: the five super Fresh remakes are awesome (hyperbole intended). The Mummy (100%, 1959), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (94%, 1978), Nosferatu The Vampyre (95%,  1979), Evil Dead 2 (98%,1987), and The Fly (92%, 1988) are stone-cold classics that perfectly adapt, remake, or reboot-quel (Evil Dead 2) previous classics.6. Remakes of Classic 1970s and 1980s Slasher Movies Have a Frighteningly Rotten 26.1% Average

bob官方下载链接 This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Star Trek, Swan Lake, and TRON: Ares. This WEEK S TOP STORYJARED LETO TO STAR IN TRON: ARES(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)It s now been ten years since the release of the long-in-development sequel TRON: Legacy (Rotten at 51%), which was perceived by some as a box office disappointment, despite actually earning over 0 million worldwide. That sequel came about 28 years after the first TRON, but it looks like the gap between 2 and 3 will be a lot shorter. That s because Disney is moving ahead with a third TRON movie, which will be directed by Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene). Original TRON star Jeff Bridges returned for TRON: Legacy, along with newcomer Garrett Hedlund, but it appears that the star of this third TRON movie will be Jared Leto (though it s also possible others will return as well). Although plenty of what Disney makes these days is for Disney+, it sounds like this new TRON is indeed planned for a theatrical release (presuming the pandemic ends soon). We also learned this week, via Jared Leto s Twitter, that the title will be TRON: Ares, which is a reference to the Greek god of war  maybe this is the name of Jared Leto s character, or maybe it s a God of War or Assassin s Creed-style game that is the new film s in-game setting. In related news, Jared Leto also confirmed on his Instagram this week that he is attached to star in an upcoming movie as famous pop art superstar Andy Warhol, although it s unclear what movie that might be (an Andy Warhol biopic was announced in 2016, but not much has been heard of it since).Other Top Headlines1. ELISABETH MOSS AND BLUMHOUSE REUNITE FOR MRS. MARCH (Photo by Mark Rogers/©Universal Pictures)Most of 2020 is completely borked when it comes to box office numbers because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but one of the year s (relative) successes happened just before theaters shut down. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions released their reimagining of the classic monster movie The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss, on February 28, earning 0 million worldwide (a number impacted by the shutdowns in March) before pivoting to a premium VOD release. Elisabeth Moss and her Love and Squalor Pictures production company are partnering again with Blumhouse on a psychological thriller called Mrs. March, in which Moss will also star. Mrs. March will be an adaptation of an upcoming novel by Virginia Feito about an a polished Upper East Side housewife who unravels when she begins to suspect the detestable protagonist of her husband’s latest bestselling novel is based on her. Moss said in a s
