Among her impressive string of credits, which include A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Marriage Story, and I, Tonya, you’ll see Lowery collaborations like the live-action Pete’s Dragon and the existential meditation A Ghost Story. Their latest project together, which has been dubbed by many a visual masterpiece, is an adaptation of the legendary 14th-century 2,500-line poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and it is a vast reframing of the gallant Arthurian myth for a modern audience.For those unfamiliar with the medieval text: During a Christmas celebration, a magical, menacing knight who appears to be made of tree bark, vines, and armor arrives to play a game – whoever lands a blow against him must venture to the Green Chapel one year hence to receive an equal blow in kind. The young plucky nephew to King Arthur, Gawain (Dev Patel), takes the challenge and, one year later, travels to face the supernatural foe.In this exclusive interview, Healy breaks down how she brought to life the fabled sets – the famed Camelot, the otherworldly Lady and Lord’s castle, the verdant Green Chapel – working with Lowery to turn this parable into an enchanting yet bleak and psychologically thrilling adventure.Crafting A New Look for Camelot(Photo by © A24)Jade Healy: I spent a long time researching different architecture of the time period and looking at different castles. I was really just trying to find something that felt right. For me, often the design process is seeing it in my head, and then trying to figure it out and put it down on paper. That comes with a lot of exploration and research and drawing.I found this French Abbey called L abbaye du Thoronet, and it was so organic and beautiful and Romanesque. It had a simplicity to it. And I wanted to avoid fussiness. Often these sort of castles have so much going on. There are all of these ornate carvings.As soon as I saw it, it almost felt like a warm womb. It’s got a sand-colored brick and it sort of conjured up images of early Star Wars, which, you know, David [Lowery] is always referencing. It was ancient and modern at the same time. That image was sort of my Eureka moment. And then from that I started designing the look and shape and feel. That was how I ended up with this sort of sand and stone color, which changes depending on how Andrew [Droz Palermo] would light, going from a gray-blue to warmish pink colors.A More Intimate Round Table(Photo by © A24)Healy: I was trying to find something that would really encompass the round table. We, of course, were limited by size. We weren t a huge movie. We had a stage space and we had to figure out how to work within the limits of our space while we were building other sets as well.Often, as you start looking at castles, [you discover] they re actually really small. The rooms are quite small because that s just how they were. So we thought in this room should just be the round table, in a specific chamber that s just for that. And by building it around the shots that David needed – the entrance of the Green Knight and this Christmas celebration – that s how we landed on that design.The Cottage of St. Winifred and Its Surrounds(Photo by © A24)Healy: As soon as I landed in Ireland, we got to drafting because we didn t have that much prep. When I read the script, I knew in my head how it should look, and then it s always just finding some reference images that are of the period. Based on these images that I found of these old cottages, we built the interiors next to the great hall right on the stage. The exterior facade was built separately in a field, and we built the pond in front of the exterior. Design is always a little bit of figuring out how you can cheat things together. The exterior we found on some land, but it was just a basic structure. Then we went in and added a thatch roof, and we added some wood detail to get it to feel right.An Intimidating Home for the Lord and Lady(Photo by © A24)Healy: For those locations we knew we d have to find them because we didn t have the money to build something like that. So, we were really looking for the right castle that could be the Lord and Lady’s. When we saw this castle, it was so interesting because it wasn t [from] the same time period at all. But that s where we felt we could jump into this magical fantasy realm and create a castle that felt totally different from the world Gawain’s left behind in Camelot. To create something that felt almost like an illusion, a dream.This castle was decrepit. This interesting old couple bought it and they re slowly restoring it with the help of volunteers that go and stay there. But there are cats roaming and the top two floors have holes. God, it was freezing cold everywhere. Which kinda helped in a way with the feeling of being in this Medieval time.But we also wanted to adapt it. The windows were so huge, which I didn t like, so I wanted to find ways to close them up. So I built around them to create these skinnier windows. I knew I wanted it to be sparse, allowing for negative space. I wanted it to have this unsettling quality in a way that it s so large and yet there s not much there. And it s not homey. It’s intimidating. We wanted to bring in a little bit more blue, and it was really fun to play with these colors that were totally out of the rest of the film – especially the Lady’s dress and the bedding being almost sort of the same color.The Lady’s Library: Books and An Anachronistic Camera(Photo by © A24)It s so fun. We knew the books were going to be fun to design because while finding these old ancient books, we had such amazing artists and craftsmen in Ireland. Our graphic designers shot all these beautiful drawings, just gorgeous. Amazing.And then for the camera, it was one of those things in the script where you knew at this point, you were moving into a more magical world because obviously they didn t have that kind of technology then. So we talked a lot about what that could be. We thought of it being some kind of pinhole camera room, like one of those giant camera obscura sort of rooms, allowing ourselves not to get too bogged down by the mathematics or the science of it. When you get bogged down you start to think, well, how does the light get back there and where did it come from? But those are the things that we allowed ourselves to go, well, it s magic. Guys, there s like this abandoned chapel back here. (Photo by © A24)We knew we just wanted this very overgrown castle. And, of course, you have something in your mind and if you could build it, there s always this perfect green chapel, but then we found this one and it really was perfect. The ivy and all those greens were really overgrowing; in fact, we had to cut some of them back to let light in. But then we brought all the moss and all the greens, and we built the river into it. In my mind when I first started designing, I envisioned it as being bigger. But then, in the end, I just really loved the intimacy of that space.We found the chapel by accident. It was right next to a location we went to scout that we didn t end up using. We were looking at it for the Lord and Lady’s castle, but we didn t like it. And then as we were leaving, the first AD went into the woods to go to the bathroom, and he was like, Guys, there s like this abandoned chapel back here. We were like, What? That s what I love about the scouting process. You just can t replicate it when you re building everything from scratch. We just walked in the woods and there was this beautiful abandoned castle. And it was just how Gawain would have come across it.The Crooked Tower Comes Together(Photo by © A24)That one was really fun because we had to figure out how to create the space, and we couldn t build on the stage because there was no stage space. It was this creative problem-solving, because I knew exactly what I wanted it to look like, but it s so hard when you have it in your head yet you can t build it. That s the suffering of a designer in a nutshell.We just found this empty old barn that was near some of our other locations that had like one-and-a-half stone walls. And then the other two walls were wood. But it had an interesting ceiling. I just said, Can I take this wall off over here? And that wall off over there? And then I just started to design. Like we’re going to match, we re going to build this on the match, we re going to add the details in the arches to the roof so we can get this medieval roof structure. Then we re going to build all the medieval windows, and then build this massive fireplace, and then put down a real stone floor.(Photo by © A24)They’ve used that barn for so many movies and for so many different things. And everyone s like, Whoa, we ve never seen it look like this before. So it was fun and amazing. Like the fireplace looks so good. It was really, really fantastic.The exterior location, where Gawain walks up to the crooked tower, there s just sort of a low wall of this real castle. When you re scouting, it’s your job as a designer to say, What about over there, those tiny, weird little steps? What if we extended that and that’s the crooked tower? That s the fun part about being a designer and being able to sort of see the world. Sometimes you see things that the DP and the director don t, and then you have the opportunity to sort of draw on it and present it. And then when everyone loves it and it makes it into the movie it s rewarding.The Green Knight is in theaters now. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.不知火舞 游戏The Call of the Wild (2020) 62% Jack London s celebrated adventure novel The Call of the Wild has made it to the big screen a handful of times since its publication in 1903, but none of the prior efforts had the benefit of advanced computer technology to help bring the story s central character, the St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix named Buck, to life. As risky a proposition as that may be, reviews say it mostly pays off in this week s The Call of the Wild. The story follows the CGI-animated Buck as he is dognapped from his blissful domestic life in California and sold as a beast of burden in the Alaskan Yukon. There, he comes under the care of a postman (Omar Sy) and learns the way of the sled dog before a series of misfortunes lands him in the hands of an aging gold prospector named John Thornton (Harrison Ford), and the two form an unlikely bond. Critics say The Call of the Wild is a mostly genial if slightly sanitized retelling of the tale that makes the most of its scenic locales and a grizzled, world-weary Harrison Ford, who brings both pathos and warmth to his character. Although the computerized Buck might be a distraction for some, the human performances help ground the film every time it treads a bit too far into the uncanny valley. That said, parents should be forewarned that, although the darkest moments (read: deaths) take place off screen, there are still scenes of animal cruelty and a palpable sadness that creeps in from time to time, so be prepared to comfort more sensitive toddlers.
Another Sundance Film Festival is done and dusted and it s been unlike any other previous year. With several high dollar acquisitions – Amazon alone spent nearly million on new titles – much of what we saw in Utah will make its way to theaters this year. If you have been following along with our Sundance Scorecard, which shows Tomatometer scores for any Sundance title that got one after 5 reviews, you ll notice critics were loving Shia LaBeouf’s Honey Boy, Jennifer Kent’s Babadook follow-up The Nightingale, Lulu Wang’s Awkwafina-led dramedy The Farewell, and Mindy Kaling s Late Night. Only four of the 2018 Sundance films made it to the Oscars this year, but chances are we will be talking about at least one of the actors from the 2019 slate come awards time next year. And if the Academy doesn’t nominate one of our favorites? We might still be talking about it anyway (*cough* Toni Collette was robbed).Park City is the place for established stars to break from their typecast molds and give us something completely new. Pete Davidson, Armie Hammer, Awkwafina, and Octavia Spencer shook things up at this year s festival, while veterans like Emma Thompson reminded us of why we love them. These are our favorite performances from Sundance 2019.Awkwafina, Aoi Mizuhara, Diana Lin, Shuzhen Zhou in The Farewell (2019) 97%(Photo by Courtesy the Sundance Institute)In The Farewell, Awkwafina takes her first dramatic turn and although the Crazy Rich Asians star feared she wouldn t be able cry on cue, her muted performance repeatedly brought us to tears. The premise – a family organizes a fake wedding to gather everyone together following the grandmother’s terminal diagnosis (which she does not know about) – is tailor made for tearjerking dramedy, and Lulu Wang’s feature debut had critics laughing through their sobs. Awkwafina plays the ‘straight man,’ while the rest of the cast provides the laughs: Mizuhara as an trepidatious Japanese bride, Lin as a stern Chinese-American mother, and Zhou as the energetic grandmother oblivious to her family s trickery. We enjoyed the men of The Farewell, too, but the women – especially Zhou – give the film its humor and heart.Octavia Spencer in Luce (2019) 90%(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)In Luce, a former African child soldier turned model U.S. student is cast in an entirely new light when he submits a disturbing essay for a school project and his teacher, played by Spencer, deputizes herself as the one to discover the truth – by any means necessary. Spencer manifests the weight of cultural expectations in the role of her career. The taut physiological drama, adapted from J.C. Lee s play, places the weight of African-American ascension upon the shoulders of our eponymous lead and as the woman who chooses to spar with him, Spencer is defiant and vulnerable. She shares scenes with Kelvin Harrison Jr. (as Luce) involving thought-provocative dialogue that pose complex questions about race and expectations, and offers few simplistic answers. Is Spencer s Miss Wilson a dedicated teacher raising valid concerns after troubling warning signs? Or is she an overbearing self-appointed investigator desperately trying to find evidence to support her pre-determinations? We left Luce unable to say one way or the other, but convinced this was an exceptional addition to an already impressive career for Spencer.Geraldine Viswanathan in Hala (2019) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Parrish Lewis)After the Blockers premiere in April 18 at SXSW we expected great things from Geraldine Viswanathan. The hands-down standout from the teen sex comedy, Viswanathan headed to Park City in the title role of Minhal Baig’s debut film Hala, the intimate story of a teenage girl who is struggling to find balance as a Pakistani teen living in America raised in a strict Muslim household. Viswanathan once again shows her comedic chops as the sarcastic first-generation immigrant, but also thrives when placed squarely against her competing ideologies. In the seams of both is where her character eventually finds herself. The film s portrayal of a teen struggling with her disapproving mother, played against an exploration of sex, art, and religion, is not exactly groundbreaking, but it is refreshing to see it from a Muslim teenager s perspective. Viswanathan s acting and Baig s semi-autobiographical script give life and authenticity to a character we don’t often see represented on screen.Lupita Nyong’o in Little Monsters (2019) 79%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Ben King)Between this and Us, Lupita Nyong’o is going all in for horror in 2019. In Little Monsters, she plays a school teacher at an Australian elementary school who is on a field trip when a military accident unleashes a horde of zombies; she and the slacker uncle of one of her students are the only adults who can protect the kids against the brain-eaters. Trapped in a farm-themed amusement park with a wannabe musician and a degenerate children’s television host (Josh Gad), Nyong’o is the emotional anchor and heart of the film. Ever since the first season of Workaholics, we have been cracking up from the comedienne’s antics and broad humor. Bell gives a star-making performance as Brittany, an overweight twentysomething who gets a wake-up call when a bogus doctor’s visit to score Adderall results in warnings about her health and wellbeing. With every mile she runs in preparation for the New York Marathon, we watch Britanny make herself over, and by the end, all of us are ready to cheer her to the finish line. While training for the marathon, she meets Jern, played by Utkarsh Ambudkar, and while we don’t want to give too much away, the verbal sparring between these two provides some of the biggest laughs in the film. At only 13, he has starred in two bona fide hits (A Quiet Place and Wonder) and racked up stellar reviews for his work. Honey Boy is about to take him to the next level. Shia LaBeouf’s semi-autobiographical retelling of his tumultuous childhood has the young Brit playing LaBeouf in his formative years, while Boy Erased actor Lucas Hedges plays the adult version in Alma Har el s first narrative feature. Hedges provides the contemporary context, but much of the narrative rests entirely on Jupe’s teenaged shoulders – and he goes toe-to-toe with LaBeouf, who plays a version of his own father. Screenwriter and co-star Mindy Kaling said that she wrote Thompson’s part as a piece of fan fiction, and the result is a Dame Emma fangirl’s dream come true. Witty, sarcastic, brilliant – the British thespian here is part Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada, part David Letterman. Kaling plays the wide-eyed new writer who desperately wants to win her boss’s affection, and Thompson s constant dismissal of her eternal cheerfulness is side-splittingly funny. More than just an ‘Iron Lady,’ Thompson also shows signs of tenderness behind the derision in this uncynical crowdpleaser. Sold to Amazon for a whopping million, Late Night looks to run The Big Sick’s playbook to similar box office success and maybe some award buzz for our Dame.Pete Davidson in Big Time Adolescence (2019) 85%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute )It’s fair to say going into Sundance that we did not think that SNL s Pete Davidson would make this list. But in Big Time Adolescence, Davidson plays the worst version of his assumed identity and shows real range. Another tale of arrested development, Big Time Adolescence is about a drug-addled man child – Davidson s Zeke – who befriends the only person who still thinks he’s cool, his ex-girlfriend’s teenage brother. Picture James Franco’s Daniel from Freaks and Geeks with tattoos, dyed blonde hair, and less charm. The predictable antics ensue, and his young protégé Mo (Griffin Glick) begins to see the cracks in the bravado and realizes that Zeke’s laid-back persona is just a mask for his perpetual f up status. Davidson is a brilliant comedic actor, and his timing is never off beat in the kind of role that Saturday Night Live players have often used to catapult to superstardom. Charismatic, hilarious, and at times painful to watch, the actor shows what he is capable of doing and we re intrigued to see what he does next.Armie Hammer in Wounds (2019) 47%Of all the big departure performances at this year’s festival, Armie Hammer’s turn in Wounds was the most dramatic. In Babak Anvari’s follow-up to Under the Shadow, Hammer plays Will, an apathetic alcoholic bartender who picks up a lost cellphone, unlocks it, and gets his life changed forever. In really gnarly ways. Light years away from anything else he’s done, Hammer is a hulking, sweaty, paranoid mess in this genuinely terrifying horror thriller. At 69% on the Tomatometer, reactions to the film have been mixed overall, but praise for Hammer has been universal. His first dip into horror sees the Call Me By Your Name star creeping everyone out and ditching his dreamboat persona for cockroaches and gore.

This has been a year with very few big superhero blockbusters, but Wonder Woman 1984 is finally coming to save the day. In the seven days since, that movie, and another Tom Holland project, both received updates. Jon Watts, who directed both Spider-Man: Homecoming (Certified Fresh at 92%) and this year s Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%) is now in talks with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to return for a third installment (7/16/2021). It s not yet known which villain will appear in the next Spider-Man, but the final scenes of Far from Home suggest it could be a J. Jonah Jameson-related threat, like the Scorpion or the Spider-Slayer robots. In related news, it was also revealed that Tom Holland himself played an integral behind-the-scenes role in making the new deal possible. In addition to the third Spider-Man scheduled for the summer of 2021 (7/16/2021), Holland also remains attached to star in Sony s video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). That project has gone through a few directors now, but this week, we learned Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) is now in talks to take it on.2. THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN NURSE RETURNING FOR 2020 S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Last year s soft reboot of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%) went a long way to disregard most of the sequels and establish itself as a direct follow-up to the original film, including the return of Jamie Lee Curtis but without the details established in later films. As the next two planned movies get closer to being filmed back to back (Halloween Kills on 10/16/2020 and Halloween Ends on 10/15/2021), the casting news has focused on the returns of other characters from the first movie, including the casting of Anthony Michael Hall as the adult Tommy Doyle, who was the kid Laurie Strode was originally babysitting. We can also now report that Nancy Stephens, who played Nurse Marion Chambers in the first Halloween, will also return for Halloween Kills. Nurse Marion had a crucial role in the original Halloween, as it was her car that Michael Myers stole as part of his escape from the Smith s Grove Sanitarium. (She also had a key role in Halloween 2, but these new films act like that movie never happened.)3. DISNEY ANIMATION DEVELOPING FOUR NEW PROJECTS AS PART OF NEW INITIATIVE (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)The next movie from Disney Animation Studios is going to be this December s sequel, Frozen II, but it appears that the studio s future will be mostly original stories for at least the next few years. (Having said that, the only confirmed title past Frozen II is next year s Raya and the Last Dragon, scheduled for 11/25/2020.) This week, Disney confirmed that they are now developing not one but four new animation projects as part of the studio s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The four directors now working on these untitled Disney Animation projects are Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blindspotting, Certified Fresh at 94%); Suzi Yoonessi (Unlovable, Fresh at 81%); Josie Trinidad (credited as a story writer on Zootopia); and Marc Smith (a longtime animator who worked on movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia). No premises have been revealed about these four projects, including whether any of them might be adapted from existing classic stories.4. CLINT EASTWOOD S RICHARD JEWELL TO BE RELEASED JUST SIX MONTHS AFTER FILMING STARTED (Photo by Keith Bernstein/Warner Bros.)Clint Eastwood is one of those directors who can get movies produced very quickly. This week s news, however, is one of the most surprising examples of his expediency. After a long development phase (which included a time when Jonah Hill might have starred, before his recent weight loss), Eastwood started filming Richard Jewell, about the 1996 bombing at the Atlanta Olympic Games, in June of this year. The start date was June 14, 2019, which is one day shy of six months before the December 13, 2019 release date that Warner Bros announced for the film this week. Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya, will star as Richard Jewell when it s released, up against Jumanji: The Next Level and the remake of Black Christmas (which was also produced really quickly this year). Warner Bros. also released the first trailer for the film this week, which will be attached in many theaters to Joker.5. PIPPI LONGSTOCKING TO BE REBOOTED BY PADDINGTON PRODUCERS (Photo by ©G.G. Communications courtesy Everett Collection)Although Swedish author Astrid Lindgren s original Pippi Longstocking books were originally published from 1945 to 1948, the super strong female children s book character has had a decades-long legacy that has included multiple movies and TV shows. Having said that, the mainstream influence of Pippi Longstocking in the USA has been relatively thin for decades, and hasn t been updated for over 20 years. That appears likely to change relatively soon with the news this week that a new Pippi Longstocking movie is now being developed by the producers of Paddington (Certified Fresh at 97%) and its even better-received sequel (Certified Fresh at 100%).6. WONDER STORY TO BE CONTINUED WITH WORLD WAR II PREQUEL WHITE BIRD (Photo by Dale Robinette /© Lionsgate)Children s author R.J. Palacio had something of a runaway hit with her 2012 novel Wonder, which was then adapted in 2017 as a well-received live action movie (Certified Fresh at 85%) starring Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts. This week, Lionsgate picked up the feature film rights to Palacio s upcoming graphic novel called White Bird: A Wonder Story. That book will tell the World War II story of a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France who would go on to become the grandmother of Julian, the central character of Wonder. It is not yet known if White Bird will be adapted as live action (like Wonder) or in animation in the style of the graphic novel.7. TREASURE ISLAND TO BE REBOOTED BY HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON DIRECTOR (Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It was just last week that we learned that the Micronauts adaptation (6/4/2021) will be directed by Dean DeBlois, who spent most of the last ten years working on the various How to Train Your Dragon animated movies. Now that the How to Train Your Dragon franchise is finished, DeBlois agents are apparently working double-time to find him new projects, because there s another one this week. Universal Pictures and Mandeville Films (Beauty and the Beast, Warm Bodies) are now developing a new adaptation of the classic pirate novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was most famously adapted as a live-action Walt Disney film in 1950 (Fresh at 100%). Dean DeBlois is reportedly attached to direct the new film, which is being adapted by screenwriter Evan Spiliotopolous (co-writer of Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter s War). With Micronauts already scheduled for 2021, Treasure Island will probably be released no sooner than 2022.8. Fans of movie development news might also recognize that ship s name as part of Last Voyage of the Demeter, a long-in-development (since 2001) horror film about the on-board massacre as Dracula and his vampire cohorts killed the ship s sailors on their way to England. Basically, Last Voyage of the Demeter attempts to fill in one of the story beats that Bram Stoker left as an untold spooky side-story. We can now report that Norwegian director André Øvredal (Trollhunter, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) is now in talks to direct The Last Voyage of the Demeter. At one point, Viggo Mortensen was attached to star in the film as the Demeter s captain, but it s not yet known if he is still attached nearly 10 years later.9. Netflix is obviously the big player in this realm, but the Disney+ streaming app (which launches next month) is also looming out there with some very promising projects. In August, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned several potential Disney+ feature films, and this week, one of those was confirmed to be moving forward in development. Borat co-writer Dan Mazer is now working on adapting the original Home Alone (starring Macaulay Culkin) as a new children s feature film for the Disney+ streaming app. The reboot is expected to be a twist on the original premise, as the young boy will now be the thief who has stolen something from a married couple (and apparently, no adult thieves are involved this time around). When the Russo Bros.-produced action-thriller Extraction landed on Netflix in April, it arrived with all the heft of a major theatrical release. Much of that was because quarantined fans were dying for something big and splashy and new to watch – anything, really, that felt like going to the movies – but it was also because the film came with the kind of big-budget action set pieces usually reserved for the big screen – and the big-screen leading man, Chris Hemsworth, to go with it. Extraction s story is simple: Hemsworth s Tyler Rake (yep, that s his character s name!) is a mercenary hired to extract a kidnapped teenage boy from the clutches of a Bangladeshi crime boss, and he must contend with countless nameless baddies to achieve his goal. The action, though, is anything but: close-combat John Wick-style tussles, epic single-shot sequences, Bond-level escapes from hairy, bullet-filled situations. Fans have been eating it up; but it s a short-lived meal. When the smoke on Extraction has cleared, and you re looking for something to keep the adrenaline pumping, we ve got some suggestions for you. What if the emotions in your head were personified, here to teach you a lesson about how sadness is good? What if humanity ruined the Earth and left a cute, largely silent robot behind to clean up? What if art deco superheroes fought against the struggles of marriage, and also maybe loved Ayn Rand? A Bug’s Life is not like that. In fact, it’s probably the most traditional Pixar movie when compared to Disney’s classic animated canon. The film, like so many of the classic Disney movies, was based on an old tale from the public domain — in this instance, the Aesop’s Fable about the ant and the grasshopper.Anybody who has watched The Little Mermaid and then gone and read the original Grimm’s Fairy Tale knows that Disney frequently makes major (and typically good) changes when adapting an old story. A Bug’s Life was no different, taking this fable of a lazy grasshopper and hardworking ant and spinning it into a new tale about individualism, make-believe actors becoming real-life heroes, and triumph over extortion. It was Pixar’s only real take on what had been Disney’s M.O. for decades, and while the studio’s creative ambitions would only grow greater, A Bug’s Life is worth remembering for being a singular Pixar reinterpretation.It Proved That Pixar Wasn’t a FlukeIf the worst thing A Bug’s Life has going for it is that it isn’t one of the greatest animated movies ever made from arguably the greatest animation studio of all time, then that’s a pretty good sophomore slump. After the success of Toy Story, Pixar, which had since become a public company, needed to deliver a success to keep the momentum going.“We felt the future of the studio was resting on it,” A Bug’s Life producer Darla K. Anderson recalled in that filmmaker’s roundtable. Had Pixar’s second movie been a total bust, Pixar might’ve been written-off as a one-hit wonder. Instead, A Bug’s Life was a critical and financial success — maybe not as good as Toy Story, but a sure sign that there were plenty more good things to come.Twenty years later, now that computer graphics have progressed so much, it’s easy to overlook the visual and technical leaps that A Bug’s Life Made. Compared to Toy Story, A Bug’s Life is much more complex. Animators needed to create entirely organic-looking worlds on a much bigger scale than Toy Story’s mostly bedroom settings. There were significantly more characters in A Bug’s Life than in the earlier film — heck, the ant colony alone dwarfs Toy Story’’s entire cast. Pixar also had to use or develop new animation techniques to handle light flickering through semi-transparent grass and the flickering flames of the finale. In other words, A Bug’s Life was no small feat, and that warrants a bit of celebration.A Bug s Life was released on November 25, 1998.
With the Avengers taking up all of the superhero pop culture real estate of late, it s almost refreshing to come across a more small-scale tale of justice, particularly one as steeped in an underrepresented culture as El Chicano is. Unfortunately, critics say the effort is mostly wasted here. Raul Castillo stars as an LAPD detective on the trail of a cartel kingpin looking to expand into Los Angeles who, inspired by childhood tales of and a personal encounter with a mythical figure called El Chicano, decides to take on the persona to fight crime outside the law. While reviews tout Castillo s effective brooding, they also note that the film lacks nuance, with thinly drawn characters whose backstories feel perfunctory rather than enlightening. El Chicano is ultimately a dark, overly gritty crime procedural-cum-vigilante thriller that relies on cliche and fails to reach its ambitious goals, but it may still serve an audience hungry for something akin to a Latino Batman.

VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) 95%The Two Towers was the film that proved Fellowship wasn t a fluke – that director Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings trilogy was going to be a landmark event, with each entry equal to the last. It showed that Jackson and his fellow writers had the skill to match their gargantuan ambition. A year after Fellowship stunned moviegoers, the world once again joined a large collection of characters on their journeys across Middle-earth – Gandalf the (now) White, Sam and Frodo, Aragorn, and the rest – but it was one character, with two natures, who would steal the show. Andy Serkis s Gollum, only glimpsed in Fellowship, took center stage in The Two Towers, and Serkis s performance, along with the technology that made it possible, would change cinema for decades to come. Here, the actor remembers auditioning for the role – one he thought at the time was only going to involve his voice. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles? “The way that the job had been explained to me was that they were making these films of The Lord of the Rings down in New Zealand and that they wanted a voice for a digital character. One of my first responses to my agent was, ‘Well, you know, I m not really a voice actor. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles?’ When I found out it was Gollum it was like, ‘Wow, gosh, that s a really exciting character.’ I d read The Hobbit when I was at school and I remembered [Gollum] hugely from that. I was fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball It suddenly gave me this idea. I d never considered myself a voice actor, just a regular actor, and I had to kind of think my way into it. I started to work on this notion that he s called Gollum because of the way he sounds – and what would make his voice sound like that? I started to think about constriction of the throat, and as I was doing that, I was actually fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball. It suddenly gave me this idea that the whole physicality of the role would be determined by this force within, which is kind of built out of guilt and torment – this involuntary physical action is what caused this sound coming out of his mouth. (Photo by New Line/courtesy Everett Collection) We are looking at this new technology called motion capture. “[My audition] was at the American [International] Church in Tottenham Court Road in London, and I d already done one audition on tape for Peter. I went inside, and down this long corridor there was this tiny little room. It was quite mysterious actually, and I remember sitting in that corridor waiting for my turn. Then I went down into the corridor, went into the room, and met Pete and Fran [Walsh]… They were saying to me, ‘You ll be on set and you ll be working with these guys, but finally you ll be manifested as a CG character; we are looking at this new technology called motion capture. It s in its early stages and we re not quite sure how it s going to work, and it ll be a cross between that and some animation.’ I said, ‘Look, the only way I can do this character is by acting it out, by actually playing it. I m not a voice actor as such. I ve never done that.’ I started to crawl around and get into character and go through the coughing-up-fur-ball voice and sort of getting into the scene, and played the tortured nature of Gollum. Pete was giggling away, and I thought, ‘OK.’ I think they were just really tickled by what I was doing. Pete was sort of crawling around too with his camera and filming it from various different angles and all sorts of different ways of shooting it.”Gollum as he appears in 2003 s The Return of the King. Gradually they asked me to play the former role of Smeagol, before he becomes Gollum. Once that had happened, they decided to redesign the whole of Gollum s face just around my features. Then my performance was filmed on 35mm for every scene, and then the animators, using faders… would then match every single facial expression of mine. In fact, when I first saw the first fully re-sculpted version of Gollum, it absolutely, totally looked like my dad, which was kind of freaky and extraordinary and made sense really. Now I know what I m going to look like when I m you know, 22 years older.”THE MOMENT: Gollum and Smeagol TalkThe Two Towers packs its 179 minutes with a slew of memorable moments and sequences – chief among them the 40-minute-long climactic Battle of Helm s Deep, still considered by many the greatest battle committed to film. Yet it s the dialogue between Gollum and Smeagol, a tortured, moonlit exchange between both sides of the one soul, that lingers. The almost photo-realistic realization of the creature impresses, but it s the writing, sharp editing, and Serkis s performance that make it more than just a memorable evolution in film technology. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. “The evolution of the character changed en route. Rather than it just being Gollum, we teased out the notion of Gollum as being this almost schizophrenic personality, and we pushed the voice in different directions. Working with Fran Walsh, and [co-writer] Philippa Boyens as well, we pushed the notion of Gollum being the more visceral, brutal kind of survivor character and Smeagol being the young, innocent sibling, if you like – abused sibling. I had to find for myself something tangible, something real, in the real world, so that the power of the Ring would resonate, and so for me it was really about addiction. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. His physicality as such was very much based on someone suffering the terrible physical symptoms of a very strong addiction. It s tearing the body apart and tearing the mind apart, and the decrepitude of his body and the tortured, twisted, emaciated look was the externalizing of what was going on inside his mind and soul. Then Philippa and Fran pushed the writing to really embolden those ideas, and that was exemplified with the scene in The Two Towers where Gollum literally talks to himself. That was something that s actually happened since. For instance, in the Apes movies that I was involved in, we had direct capture on set with motion-capture cameras in the trees – on location, capturing everything in one take. At that point, in the early stages, especially in The Two Towers, I would have to go back onto a motion-capture stage and repeat [the scene] a third time [after shooting it first with the other actors, then again reading lines out of frame with the other actors shooting it]. I would have to then do my performance again on my own in a motion-capture stage. We shot [the scene of Gollum and Smeagol talking] on a location, so the tree that he used and the rocks that he was sort of hiding behind and going either side of in the first few shots, that was all built. That was a real set, and we shot all that on a location, doing that two-part process. We constructed the whole scene like that, with the fallen log and Gollum eventually jumping down and spinning around with all the leaves and all of that being kicked up. You can just concentrate on performance. “There was rewriting. The thing is with Fran and Philippa and Pete, there s always a sort of constant rewriting of the script and evolving the script, and with every take they re looking for something new and something fresh in the moment. Also, from a writing point of view, once they ve shot something, they like to be able to go back in, and with performance capture you have that ability. That is one of the joyful things about performance capture: the ability to completely improvise and try something different, and keep going and keep going and exploring, without the pressure of being on a live-action film set. You re not going to run out of film, you don t have to change lights, you don t have to do anything. You can just concentrate on performance, which is an amazing thing.”THE IMPACT: An Unexpected Journey The Lord of the Rings trilogy would make almost billion worldwide, and its conclusion, The Return of the King, would win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (the two previous films were also nominated in the category, but neither won). The trilogy s impact on film, and studio decision-making, was huge: the 2000s saw a number of fantasy titles get the green light, Jackson would later return to Middle-earth with The Hobbit films, and viewers of TV smash Game of Thrones say its makers owe much to what Jackson and his team put into cinemas every December between 2001 and 2003. For Serkis, The Lord of the Rings was life-changing; he would become the go-to actor for performance-capture roles, starring in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes and its sequels as Caesar, as King Kong in Jackson s 2005 take on that classic story, and he would direct his own film, Mowgli, which would push technology to new places. With each step, the technology advanced and the wow-factor intensified – what remained constant was the strength of the Serkis performance driving it. If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. The first epiphany moment for me, where I realized how much I loved performance capture, or motion capture as it was at the time, was being on the motion-capture stage and seeing in real time: If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. I could see a gray-shaded model of Gollum lifting up his arm, and that for me cemented this affair, really, with the technology, and the realization of what it could actually do. I ll never forget [when I first saw the character on the big screen]. It was at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York; it was at the world premiere of The Two Towers. The movie just was so potent and powerful, with the halls of Helm s Deep. Politically where we were – it was just post-911 and there was this sense of doom, of just the world changing. The world seemed so fractured and dangerous and frightening, and seeing that film, it just felt so much like it was reflecting that in some way. It was a very potent experience; such an amazing experience seeing it with a live audience. I did have this extraordinary experience when [the scene with Gollum and Smeagol talking] came up. I could literally feel the audience leaning in and just, like, not quite sure what this was. They couldn t quite work it out. Was this an actor? Was this a creature? That character for me defined a big, big turning point in my career, and opened up a huge world. You know, there isn t a single day that goes past when someone doesn t come up to me and talk to me about Gollum. I mean, it really is quite extraordinary. He s a beloved character, because I think everyone feels something for him. They either feel something very strongly about him, towards him, or they kind of feel themselves to be like him in some way.
