Well, two weeks later it has staked out a path to reach one of the numbers many of us expected it to in the first place.King of the Crop: Far from Home Outshines All Previous Spider-Man MoviesRyan FujitaniDid Spider-Man: Far From Home get the same Avengers bump that Iron Man 3 did years ago? We’ll answer that in a minute, but Tom Holland’s fifth appearance as the superhero (and just his second stand-alone film) is nevertheless looking like another monster for Marvel. Just last week it had the highest Tuesday opening of all-time (.25 million) and the highest single Wednesday of any Marvel film ( million). That was all before the weekend. By the end of its first six days, it has grossed 5 million. That is more than Sam Raimi’s 2002 origin story, which had 4.1 million after six days (around 5 million if you figure inflation.) Spider-Man: Homecoming had 4.1 million, Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 (6.1 million), and Spider-Man 2 (0 million) now all trail Far From Home. But we need to be looking at more recent examples to have an idea of what Spidey’s future holds.The eight MCU films to crack the 0 million line domestically, the lowest total after six days was Captain Marvel with 7.6 million, and that was without a trio of summer weekdays. Next on the list is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which had 5.9 million and finished with over 9 million. Homecoming finished with 4.2 domestically and 0.1 million worldwide. Far From Home has already grossed over 0 million worldwide. The broadest estimate we can start with for Far From Home is somewhere between 0-425 million domestic. It also has a distinct advantage in not exactly having much competition with Stuber and Crawl next week. War for the Planet of the Apes helped knock Homecoming back a bit with a 62% decline in its second week. Among the 26 other films that have done it, only three failed to reach 0 million. They were Revenge of the Sith, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Two of those were final chapters of sorts like Toy Story 4, with each of them still finishing between 0-390 million. Guardians actually had a slightly higher third weekend with .6 million and is the only film to ever have 0 million in 17 days and a + million third weekend but still miss the 0 million line. Remarkably though, Toy Story 4 has not just maintained a steady pace with #3, it is actually outpacing it even further now by over million. Toy Story 3 had a .2 million third weekend (compared to 4’s .3) and finished with over 0 million. With a worldwide total just under 0 million, where exactly is the disappointment again?On the other hand, there may be some slight disappointment for Ari Aster’s Midsommar. Critics scored it at 82% on the Tomatometer, and it was certainly hoping for something closer to Hereditary s .2 million five-day start. .6 million for Midsommar suggests word of mouth is hitting it earlier and harder, despite an audience score that is currently 4% higher than Aster s debut. Nevertheless, it is already the 11th film released by A24 to gross million or higher, it could still be one of their five highest-grossing films ever, and it has already secured the best opening for an indie studio this year. Hereditary is their second-highest with .06 million.Last week’s releases each experienced their own share of success. Annabelle Comes Home is up to .3 million after 12 days. That puts the film a bit over the pace of the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, which finished with over million. Annabelle is aiming for somewhere between -70 million, which would be the lowest-grossing of the Annabelle films. But with over 4 million globally already on a budget in the vicinity of million, it is already well into profit. Danny Boyle’s Yesterday maintained its third place slot and has collected over million in 10 days. It will shortly become Boyle’s second highest grossing film, and with around another million total, it will be into profit territory as well.Finally in coincidence city, Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake grossed .2 million in its seventh weekend. Back in 1992 in its seventh weekend of wide release, the animated Aladdin grossed .43 million. That is also enough to get the 2019 version over 1 million worldwide, the 55th film to ever cross that line. And it is still in the top five. Now imagine how much The Lion King is going to make. Then again, at least Fox screened it for critics, something that Paramount is not doing for Crawl, the latest horror film from Alexandre Aja, the director of High Tension and the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha. We re just going to say it: The TRON: Legacy soundtrack is one of the best pieces of movie music to grace theaters in decades. Scored entirely by legendary French electronic duo Daft Punk, it seamlessly combines more typical orchestral fanfare with the their signature synthwavey staccatos, and the result is both modern and sophisticated. There are moody synths and percussion moments like the theme of the movie s villain, and much of the score sounds like it was recorded using sounds from an actual computer.But Daft Punk don t let their reputation and background define their work on the film. Sure, they pull from their signature repertoire for the banger of a dance track that plays during their big cameo scene, but they also demonstrate a knack for big, emotional pieces that feel fully operatic, like an even moodier version of John Carpenter if he worked with an 85-piece orchestra. The whole album is a fantastic listen from beginning to end, and it likely saw heavy rotation in the collections of more than just film score nerds.The Film Is a Giant Allegory for Movie Sequels(Photo by ©Walt Disney Pictures)Though the plot of both Tron and Tron: Legacy are simple at their cores, they both keep their big allegories just barely hidden beneath the surface. The original film was about a world of anthropomorphic computer programs waiting for the day a human user would arrive and save them from the evil program ruling over them; when Flynn enters the Grid and does exactly that, he s regarded as a god. Legacy centers on Flynn s reunion with his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund), but the film utilizes that reunion to tell a story about Flynn the god and his creation, and likewise about a movie sequel and its predecessor.When Legacy reintroduces the audience to Flynn, he s living in exile in the Grid, cast out from its society by Clu — a program created in young Flynn s own image. Clu s entire purpose was to realize Flynn s vision of a perfect system; he s a reflection of a young Flynn s hubris and pride. So it makes sense that Clu would then try to purge everything he saw as imperfect — including his creator. In turn, Clu tries to be the creator of his own world by tearing everything down and building it back up to his liking, by eradicating the programs known as isomorphic algorithms or just ISOs and brainwashing everyone else into following him. Clu may be severely misguided, but his entire reason for existence was to carry out his creator s very specific bidding.In many ways, this creator/creation relationship is a mirror of the father/son one between Flynn and Sam. In the first act, we see Sam refuse to take his rightful place at his father s company s board, pranking them instead by stealing new products and releasing them for free before pulling a Batman-like escape from the building complex. Like Sam, Tron: Legacy also had to make its own name in the shadow of its predecessor s legend. Trying to please fans of the original while offering something to new audiences is a near impossible standard to meet, and the film itself seems to anticipate any blowback in the form of Clu — a creation that did everything its creator wanted and yet failed to please him.The Scenery-Chewing Is Delicious(Photo by ©Walt Disney Pictures)One of the biggest changes made in Tron: Legacy was Jeff Bridges portrayal of Flynn. In the original, he wasn t a hero. He went into the Grid to find evidence of a colleague stealing his code, but he didn t care for the programs. The fact that, mathematically, Sam should have already been born by the time of the first film but never appeared in it is a clever bit of retconning to make Flynn even more of an absentee jerk. But when we see him again in Tron: Legacy, he s part Steve Jobs, part The Dude from The Big Lebowski. And who doesn t love The Dude?Kevin Flynn turned from an ambitious programmer to a wise sage who won t abide people messing with my Zen thing, who reminisces about jamming and appreciates the miracle of bio-digital jazz. Bridges is clearly having fun with the character and the legacy the audience has in their head.Meanwhile, Michael Sheen shows up for a short but very memorable role as the shadowy nightclub owner Zuse, a digital love child of Ziggy Stardust and Frank-N-Furter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. who swings his cane traipses through the End of the Line club fight scene like a cackling vaudevillian. It s as if he dropped in from the set of another film entirely, but somehow, it just works.It Manages to Recapture the Visual Marvel of the Original(Photo by Douglas Curran/©Walt Disney Pictures)The original Tron was praised for its groundbreaking use of computer-generated visuals, paving the way for everything from Pixar movies to Avengers: Endgame. Though Tron: Legacy suffers a bit from the uncanny valley effect when it comes to Clu, the film still manages to present a massive, vibrant world of its own.Remember the disc fights from the original Tron? The sequel reimagines them by amping everything up to 11 with high-flying acrobatics and pristine derezzing effects. Remember the then-revolutionary light cycle races? Legacy takes the concept three-dimensional with a huge set piece that twists and turns on a multi-level racetrack and even finds time to work in a dogfighting sequence that feels straight out of Star Wars.But the film also ventures beyond the Grid and depicts a sprawling, apocalyptic world with busy, shadowy streets and alleyways, vast deserts, and otherworldly mountains. Watching the light cycles for the first time may not be as groundbreaking as it was in 1982, but Tron: Legacy takes full advantage of the technological advancements of the past few decades to present a cutting-edge world you would want to live in. The final numbers were not out this weekend when Kevin Feige made the announcement that there was a new no. 1 during Marvel’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con Saturday night. As of Sunday, Avengers: Endgame has grossed an estimated 4.21 million domestic and .790 billion worldwide. Far From Home has grossed 9.5 million worldwide, over million more than Spider-Man: Homecoming made in its entire run and less than million behind Spider-Man 3 which is the highest-grossing Spidey film ever. Until Monday.Toy Story 4 is at 4.3 million as of Sunday after a .4 million weekend. One full month into release. That is the 20th highest in history, just ahead of Captain Marvel’s 3.8 million. Disney’s Aladdin also just passed the 1994 Lion King for its spot on the all-time worldwide chart after this weekend s .8 million weekend. It is now 40th all-time with 8 million with a billion dollars in its sights.As for last week’s releases, Crawl looks like it will outgross Lake Placid’s 1999 haul of .7 million, suggesting a final haul around - million. That along with a few international dollars will be enough to get the .5 million production into profit. The same cannot be said for Stuber which is actually on about the same track as Midsommar, both between .9 and .1 million after 10 days. Another sequel, Unfriended: Dark Web, barely made the top 10, making .65 million for a ninth-place finish. Even the race for the middle was decided by less than a million between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (.26 million), Skyscraper (.36 million), and Incredibles 2 (.89 million). The top 10 films grossed 7.37 million and averaged 67.4% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 5.28 million and averaged 69.3%. That total ranks as the third best top 10 weekend ever in July. It is behind only July 18-20, 2008 (0.97 million) when The Dark Knight ruled and July 15-17, 2011 when the previous singular July record-holder (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2) helped charge the top 10 to 8.55 million.

She is obviously mostly remembered for a singing and dancing star from the Astaire and Rogers musicals, but this is a melodrama – there was no singing or dancing. It basically tells the story of a girl who grows up on the wrong side of the tracks and falls in love with a wealthy heir to a big Philadelphia fortune, and has to navigate romance and class and all of these different issues.It s a very conservative film and it s very didactic. It s extremely problematic in a lot of ways, but I find it fascinating. The performance that she gives, though… I think a lot of times, some of these great stars, they win an Oscar for a movie that s not their best work, or it s sort of given as a consolation prize for them not winning for something that is a classic. I think people think that about Kitty Foyle because nobody watches it any more, and people only remember Ginger Rogers as a dancer, but her performance in this movie is stunning.The character she s playing has to sort of take on different personas over the course of her life and with different people in her life. The way that Ginger Rogers performs those unique and distinct versions of the same person is just really incredible. Obviously, there s a huge degree of difficulty to a career based on singing and dancing. I wrote about this in my book, but there s that old line about Ginger Rogers that She had to do everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in heels. The whole idea of her stardom is about how much harder it is for a woman to do the same things that a man does. But all of that said, I think there s a degree of difficulty to this performance that is the kind of thing that is really, true great acting and great stardom, but it s the kind of thing where the labor doesn t show, and so people don t talk about it in that way.

Let’s take a look.Marvel’s Howard the Duck(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The comic book character created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik, featured in his own self-titled comic book from 1976-1979, and short-run series in 1986, 2001, 2007, and longer run from 2015-2017. He also makes appearances across the Marvel Universe.Premise: Transported to Earth against his will, Howard does his best to make do under the circumstances. He generally finds work and sometimes even gets paid for his troubles. He also battles absurd villains, like the obsessive Dr. Bong, while also trying the best way to get rich quick and escape the quarrelsome tendencies of the Marvel Universe.Status: Announced as part of the Offenders quartet of Hulu projects in February, Clerks director Kevin Smith and Aqua Teen Hunger Force co-creator Dave Willis are developing the project for Marvel Entertainment. The pair seem suitably chosen for Howard s anarchic take on comic book tropes.Chances for Success: If it can get out from under the shadow of the infamous Howard the Duck feature film, the irreverent humor baked into the premise should keep this around for a few seasons. But as with almost all of Howard’s solo outings, it will probably end prematurely.Marvel’s Tigra Dazzler Show(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The stalwart Avenger Tigra, created by Roy Thomas and Wally Wood — later refined by Tony Isabella and Don Perlin — and the mutant pop star created by Tom DeFalco, John Romita Jr., Louise Simonson, and Roger Stern. Both have had storied careers in and out of the core Avengers and X-Men titles, joining various super-teams, going solo, and changing their looks to match the times. Fun fact: Dazzler began her career as a disco singer in a cross-promotion with Casablanca Records. Both the label and Marvel hoped to launch her as a multimedia entity in film, music, and comics. An animated series 40 years later may not have been what Casablanca wanted, but we ll take it.Premise: The politically minded duo make their way to Los Angeles, a world apart from Marvel’s favored Manhattan, where they try to get their superpowered heads, hands, and hearts around their lives.Status: Chelsea Handler and The Last Man on Earth veteran Erica Rivinoja are developing the series for Marvel.Chances for Success: The unusual pairing of Tigra and Dazzler makes this the outlier of the new Marvel animated projects, as does Handler’s brand of humor. That said, it could always prove to be the standout thanks to those very elements.Marvel’s Hit-Monkey(Photo by Marvel)Based on: The simian assassin created by Daniel Way and Dalibor Talajić, who appeared in a 2010 Hit-Monkey one-shot release, a Deadpool storyline, and a three-issue, self-titled miniseries.Premise: An angry Japanese macaque makes for Tokyo to avenge the deaths of his clan. Luckily, he has the skills and aid of a ghost who was once an American assassin. And if the two have anything to say about, all of the city’s criminal underworld is going to pay.Status: Blades of Glory directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck are currently developing the series as part of Marvel and Hulu’s Offenders initiative.Chances for Success: While Blades of Glory has a Tomatometer score of 70%, the duo s subsequent films have not been as fresh. The Jennifer Aniston/Jason Bateman comedy The Switch struck out at 51%, while their most recent film, Office Christmas Party, stumbled with a 41%. Of course, the absolute wackiness of the premise may give them a renewed energy.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.(Photo by Marvel)Based on: One of the greatest gifts Jack Kirby and Stan Lee ever gave to comics. Making his full debut in 1967’s Tales of Suspense #94, the Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing and his successors in name and appearance became one of the Marvel Universe’s most constant, bewildering, and wonderful foes.Premise: The egomaniacal supervillain with a really big head and a really little body struggles to maintain control of his evil organization and his demanding family. He also faces an inferiority complex of sorts as villains like Doctor Doom look down on him.Status: Hulu and Marvel secured the services of Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum to develop the series, with Oswalt set to voice the lovable, if misunderstood, M.O.D.O.K.Chances for Success: We might be a biased, but we’re sure viewers will love M.O.D.O.K. once they meet him.Harley Quinn(Photo by DC Universe)Based on: Batman: The Animated Series’ breakout character Harley Quinn. Created by series producer Bruce Timm and writer Paul Dini as a one-time gun moll for the Joker, she took on a life of her own, eventually debuting in the DC Comics universe in 1999. She’s since become a big deal thanks to her own monthly comic, her appearance in the Suicide Squad feature film, and her own upcoming spinoff film, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).Premise: Harley has finally kicked the Joker to the curb. Her next target: a spot within the Legion of Doom. And she ll push her way past any and all of the DC Comics ne er-do-wells to do it. With some help from Poison Ivy, of course.Status: First announced in late 2017 as one of the key projects on the then-unnamed DC Universe streaming service, the series will debut this October with Kaley Cuoco voicing Harley, Lake Bell voicing Ivy, and Alan Tudyk voicing Joker. Other cast members include Diedrich Bader (once again playing Batman), Ron Funches, Wanda Sykes, Natalie Morales, Jim Sykes, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander, and Christopher Meloni as Commissioner Gordon. Powerless s Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey developed the series and serve as executive producers.Chances for Success: The service s first animated offering, Young Justice: Outsiders, has a 93% on the Tomatometer. If Harley Quinn is of similar quality, it will no doubt return to the service for a second season. Then again, Powerless folded after one 61% season on NBC. But with the metrics between network and streaming being wildly different, Harley could prove victorious in the end.Invincible(Photo by Image Comics)Based On: The Image comic book series by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, which ran for 144 issues and a number of special releases from 2003 to 2018.Premise: Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) is your typical 17-year-old boy. Well, as typical as he can be when his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Thanks to his father’s alien physiology, Mark is super-strong and possesses the ability to fly. But as Mark develops these and other powers, he discovers that his father’s legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.Status: Amazon revealed a rich and varied voice cast for the series in January 2019, which includes Yeun, Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin, and Max Burkholder. In a break from traditional half-hour format for animation of all stripes, Invincible will feature hour-long episodes. The first eight-episode season is expected to debut in 2020.Chances for Success: The comic book series ran for a long time, indicating the story has an engrossing appeal — not unlike The Walking Dead. But the hourlong format is untested and it remains to be seen if viewers will take to the longer runtime. Of course, viewers may hardly notice if they binge-watch it as they do Amazon’s The Tick and other original programs.What If ?(Photo by Marvel)Based On: Marvel Comic s What If ?, an anthology series that ran from 1977 to 1984 and again from 1989 to 1998 — with a handful of shorter runs in the years since — and told stories based around different outcomes of various classic Marvel tales. Issues centered on questions like What if Spider-Man joined The Fantastic Four? and What if Daredevil became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Premise: Taking inspiration from the comic book, each episode will explore a pivotal moment in Marvel Cinematic Universe history and turn it on its head. The first episode, for example, will ask What if Peggy Carter took the super soldier serum? Status: The project was announced in April of 2019 as another partnership between Marvel Studios and the Disney+ streaming service. Because of the studio s involvement, MCU actors including Hayley Atwell (Carter) will reportedly reprise their roles. It is currently unclear when the series will debut, but the service is set to launch in November 2019.Chances for Success: It is a Marvel Studios project on Disney+. The only thing that could hobble it would be Disney+ failing to woo enough subscribers when it launches in November.Magic: The Gathering(Photo by Wizards of the Coast)Based On: The legendary collectible card game that kept many comic book shops afloat in the dark days of the 1990s. Players choose elemental forces to power their armies and face off against friends and strangers. The game continues to thrive more than 25 years later with professional leagues, online games, and various other forms of merchandise.Premise: The Planeswalkers — the game s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains who travel across Magic’s own multiverse — vie for control, not unlike players of the game in the real world.Status: Announced in June 2019, the series will be overseen by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who will develop a never-before-told story of the Planeswalkers. Bardel Entertainment will animate the series for Octopie (the animation studio that is producing it), and it ll debut on Netflix in 2020.Chances for Success: Considering Magic s appeal spans decades, generations, countries, and various types of media, it should work about as well as other Magic initiatives. At the same time, film and television are new realms for the Planeswalkers, and they may find their adventures there as perilous as Dungeons Dragons s attempts at crossing into those same arenas.Jurassic World: Camp CretaceousBased on: The Jurassic World movie series, which is itself based on the Jurassic Park movie series. Both are based on the novel by Michael Crichton in which a Walt Disney-type industrialist recreates dinosaurs to open an amusement park. Jurassic Park represents it going disastrously wrong while Jurassic World shows it as a viable business — at least for a time. Then, disaster strikes (as it always must).Premise: Six teenagers find their once-in-a-lifetime trip to a new adventure camp on the opposite side of Isla Nublar (where most Jurassic films occur) is anything but a wonder summer vacation. The dinosaurs wreak havoc across the island — as they often do — forcing the stranded campers to bond and help each other survive the ordeal.Status: As revealed in June, the series will be part of Netflix’s ongoing animation initiative with DreamWorks Animation, the company behind the excellent Voltron and She-Ra revivals. Pinky Malinky’s Scott Kreamer and Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny’s Lane Lueras will serve as showrunners and executive producers while Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, and overall Jurassic producer Frank Marshall will be on board as executive producers. Thor screenwriter Zach Stentz will be a consulting producer. The series is set to debut in 2020.Chances for Success: Netflix’s partnership with DreamWorks yielded Voltron: Legendary Defender (95%), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (95%), and Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia series. The animation and storytelling is top notch and surprisingly compelling. If they can bring that standard to the Jurassic World brand, the only real concern will be making the kids’ summer vacation last for 65 episodes.
(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)This week’s episode of What If…?, with its double Doctor Stranges and magical madness, was a tour-de-force example of the power of the program s animation staff and further evidence of an emerging “prestige animation” format.“I think there s no denying that animation is having a moment and that new types of programs that we could not have done a few years ago, either because just the industry wouldn t go for it or because the technology wasn t there, is happening now,” What If ? animation supervisor Stephan Franck said when Rotten Tomatoes had a chance to talk to him and other members of the production team recently.“I sure hope so,” added production designer Paul Lasaine. “It’s been a long time coming, in the US, anyway.”While animation is varied in terms of genres, formats, and technical sophistication in other parts of the world, the United States market still aims most of its animation at all-ages demographics or younger children – not that this stops some adults from admiring available programs or appreciating the work involved in creating these shows. But What If…? definitely continues a trend toward sophistication in terms of story and craft roughly analogous to high-end, live-action series.“The directive we had from the studio was to push the limits, to really see how far animation can be pushed,” editor Graham Fisher said. “I think that as an anthology, it s probably one of the ambitious animated shows that s ever been made, just because you re going to see, as more and more episodes come out, no holds were barred in the making of the show. It s impossibly complicated.”Here we chat with some of the people who manage the complexity of What If…? and deliver that ambitious, prestige-style animation.Designing the Characters(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)For Ryan Meinerding, character designer and head of visual development, part of the fun is “starting from that firm ground of how people understand the characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe” and either building on those strong graphic designs or subverting them. “If you mix them, if you change a character, if you want to take a component of T Challa, meaning like his necklace, and sort of put that into a Star-Lord context, it allows you to be subtle.”On the other hand, the wicked Doctor Strange seen this week offered an opportunity to be more obvious in changing a Marvel icon. “[We could] do sort of classic, pointier chins and sharper shapes in the collar, and in a slightly darker costume while [Strange is] sort of gaunt in the face.” The result: a demonic take on the usually heroic character worthy of the wilder outcomes inherent to What If…?.“‘What if Dr. Strange busted his heart instead of his hands?’ meant that we could create that evil Dr. Strange in a very, very straightforward way,” Meinerding said. “I think one of the things that was super fun for me was having him go down that more evil road. By taking in those additional creatures to become more powerful, [there was] also a specific cost to him that he couldn t control at the end of that episode we saw the fun of that spiral spiraling out of control. Evil Strange exemplifies one of the great aspects of the show for Meinerding. As he put it, “so many of the conceits of each episode is really tied up with the design.”Although most of the characters on the series have their design origins in the live-action features, Meinerding relished the chance to visually define The Watcher and work him into unexpected moments in each episode. “The idea [is] that he s often painted into backgrounds, literally. Or, the notion that you re looking at him, and seeing the silhouette that s painted or executed with time and space,” he explained. “I think that s one of the more fun design challenges of the show: ‘How do we create a Watcher that feels like he s in every episode, but then you might have to look really hard to find him?’ Creating the Performances (Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Animation is full of obscure terms which, to even the enthusiast, are hard to keep straight. So a term like “animation supervisor” may sound like a purely administrative post. But according to Franck, his primary role on the series is far more direct: he aids the animation team in crafting the visual performances of the characters.“When you re doing an animated movie or TV show, you have half of the acting performance that is coming from the voice,” he explained. “They re creating a moment, they re getting everything you need to know about that moment and that scene. But it only exists [audibly]. So the animators think of themselves as actors who create the visual part of that performance.”Listening closely to those vocal tracks, it becomes the purview of the animator to determine the “look” of those sounds on a character’s face or how it translates into their movements. “[The actor] said it this way, is it one of those moments where she s saying what she means or is she lying? Or is it sarcastic? It s trying to really live [the moment], you just put yourself inside the performance and you re recreating the visual aspect of it.”In terms of the supervisor role, Franck works with all the animators to create those acting choices, whether it s through the movement or through the poses, and discover if it is the right one for the moment on screen. An example of those choices can be seen this week as Strange s expressions and body language reflect his increasing frustration about his inability to prevent the accident. But it is just one example of the 7,000 or so shots Franck supervised across the first season. “Every frame is important,” he said. So even small changes will make a scene that you think, ‘Yeah, I guess it s working’ [turn into] something more like, Wow!' Getting to that visceral reaction is always the goal.Showcasing the Environments(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)What If…? is also a wonderful showcase of Marvel’s expansive environments – from intergalactic bars to the Lost Library of Cagliostro. The person in charge of designing those landscapes is production designer Paul Lasaine. Working in the Marvel Multiverse means some of those locations will have certain Jack Kirby- or, in the case of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko-feel to them – although Lasaine noted that creating the feel of What If…? as an animated series required a wider scope of reference material to get to its signature atmosphere.For one thing: The program s overall visual feel is inspired by the work of Saturday Evening Post cover artist J.C. Leyendecker, although Lasaine said that was “a beginning” of the show’s style. “If you look at Leyendecker and you look at our stuff, it s like, ‘Okay, I can kind of see it.’ It s not priority, it s its own thing. We started with that, and then we evolve into our final look, which is where we are at today.”The Kirby vibes, meanwhile, come out mostly in the look of the characters, although Lasaine pointed to the pulsating, bubbly energy effect known as “Kirby Crackle” as the most direct reference his team pulls from the legendary artist. “If we re trying to do [that] effect, then we re definitely looking at Kirby,” he said.But as his department is concerned with giving the show some of its more cinematic feel, they also look to the work of live action cinematographers like Roger Deakins (Skyfall) and Darius Kondji (Seven). The results lead to the colors used and the sense of smoke or atmosphere in What If…?’s take on the Sanctum Santorum or the “trippy hellscape” Strange enters to absorb demonic beings, to say nothing of the Lost Library itself, one of the locations Lasaine and his team built specifically for Episode 4.Cutting the Action
The Villain that Tested Them the MostFassbender: Apocalypse. I mean, I was always, personally, like, does Eric really have to follow this guy? It definitely went against the grain for me, I’ve got to say. But it was Oscar [Isaac], so that was the bit that I was like, OK, well, I would follow Oscar.McAvoy: Yeah. He s a great peer. He s a great fellow Shmactor. But, yeah. Maybe him. I m not sure actually. Trask, maybe? Because I felt like I got to a place of trust with you again, you know? A place where I thought we could be together again… and then you go and drop a stadium on the White House.The Evolution of their RelationshipMcAvoy: I don t feel like it s that different [now]. Do you know what? We had more to do together in First Class and Days of Future Past, less so in Days of Future Past, but we had more to do with each other in every film in the past; Apocalypse there was less to do. Until finally, we find ourselves in this movie saying like three words to each other. So that s how it s changed massively; we don t get to do it. I think it s a great travesty, and one of the great missed opportunities of this incarnation of the X-Men saga.Fassbender: Agreed. We do get to play a game of chess in this last one.McAvoy: We do. We do.Fassbender: We come full circle.(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox)Reflecting on Each Other s PerformanceMcAvoy: My favorite performance of his in [the X-Men films] is definitely First Class because I think that was really, truly, actually a great film balancing an ensemble and giving everybody an arc and stuff, but in terms of who that film is really about, that was the origin story for Magneto in essence. And just getting to see him rock this… not just mutant leader figure, which he wasn t yet, but actually imbue it with a sort of James Bond, espionage, spy-like quality as well. That was just a wicked thing to do with your character.Fassbender: I would say Days of Future Past. Because you really go through the ringer in that one. And just in general, something with James, which is pretty impressive to see, is like, he s got a really good understanding of storytelling, like where the character is in the journey of the character and where it should end up at the end. Just that sort of awareness of a character journey. So much so that what we see in this last film – the germ of it was there in First Class, which was this idea that you had we ve always seen Professor X in such a positive light. He s always so giving and generous, and you were like, well, there s a flip side to that, you know. That there was an element of his ego that was there and to be explored, and of course, we see the whole effect of it here in this movie. So that s been cool to watch over four movies. That s impressive.Team Magneto or Team Professor X?McAvoy: There s a great line in Braveheart from the late actor, great actor, Ian Bannen, who said to Robert the Bruce when he s trying to caution him and say, don t go off and fight with William Wallace, right, even though it s the right thing to do, don t go and do it. He says, It s really easy to like him, isn t it? Because uncompromising men are easy to like. And it s true. Erik s so uncompromising, you re drawn to him. But also, he s always right as well. Humanity is going to stab us in the back, he says. And they do. They always do. So, I think I would go with Erik.Fassbender: I think I m going to go with Charles just because I think in order to move forward, you have to integrate. Remember when we were storming that building in Russia, and we were laying in the long grass just chatting. It was like a scene in Out of Africa or something.McAvoy: Oh, in between takes.Fassbender: Yeah. And that s where, I think, it all started.Making Cherik a Throuple – with an MCU Hero or One of the X-MenFassbender: [After understanding the throuple question] I m going to go Sophie [Turner}, Jean Grey. Because she s the most powerful mutant out there. Well like, you know, if we re going to have a team, we re solid.James: I would definitely want to go with somebody who s a psychic because I think we could have some crazy, mind-bending fun. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Taylor-Joy will play chess prodigy Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit, which will follow the life of an orphan chess prodigy from the ages of 8 to 22 during the Cold War era. The six-episode series is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis.Veep has recruited Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn and Michael McKean for its seventh and final season, Entertainment Weekly reports. The Bad Times at the El Royale director has continued to work in both TV and film (he created Daredevil and co-created The Defenders) since starting on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 2002.
Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable.In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart.How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction.The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground.How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script.How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon.
