threat. In his debut story, The Amazing Spider-Man #13, special effects wiz Quentin Beck used gas to stymie Peter’s Spider-sense and devised a means to counteract his webbing. He also framed Spider-Man for a bank robbery. He would continue to use his gift for creating illusions to baffle Spider-Man, his friends, and even Aunt May for decades to come. And in Far From Home, it appears the monsters Peter faces known in Marvel Comics as The Elementals will turn out to be Mysterio’s creations. Considering his only line in the trailer is “you don’t want any part of this,” followed by a shot of him battling the water monster, we’re going to guess Mysterio plans to set himself up as a counterfeit hero to divert attention from his real scheme. And, y’know, framing Spider-Man may still be part of that plan. He gets framed at least three times a year.4. A New Spider-Suit(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)It wouldn’t be a Spider-Man movie without Peter getting a new Spider-suit. And the black, armor-padded one glimpsed in the teaser echoes the look of Spider-Man Noir from the comic book of the same name (and the inspiration for the character featured in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), though it also shares some similarities to the “Dark” suit which first appeared in Spider-Man/Deadpool #8. For incredible plot reasons, that suit came into being because Peter talked to Mephisto, the demon who erased Peter’s memory of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson (a very, very long story). The padding also recalls an early armored suit from the 1990s. Spider-Man has had a lot of suits over the years, which means the feature films have a lot of latitude in what they can do with Spider-Man’s look. Also, it seems as though his Stark Industries suit also had an upgrade. It appears to be black and red, with the red taking on a darker hue than before. It looks great on film and we re going to assume its a replacement for the one he will presumably lose in Endgame. Y know, once he returns from nothingness.5. Happy Is Cool With Aunt May(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Happy (Jon Favreau) makes two appearances in the trailer. In the latter moment, he seems to be giving Peter some sort of pep talk about saving his friends. But the earlier moment has a lot going on. For one thing, he’s flirting with Aunt May. Granted, just about every straight male in the MCU ends up flirting with her at some point; it is a constant joke in Homecoming. But the silliness of the moment obscures a potentially key detail.Just before the flirting starts, Happy walks into the homeless shelter’s kitchen with a 0,000 novelty check from Synchrony Bank – purveyors of Marvel’s credit card here in the real world – signed by Pepper Potts. On the check, she is listed as “Co-Founder and Chair, Stark Relief Foundation.” While the organization has been part of the MCU since the Battle of New York (as referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Homecoming), Happy’s appearance and Pepper’s large signature both point to a strange absence in Peter’s world. Where is Tony Stark? That question puts the teaser – and any trailer that might appear before Avengers: Endgame’s April 26th release – in a precarious spot. Should Tony sacrifice himself for the sake of the universe in Endgame, Peter will feel that loss and, presumably, reference it at some point in Far From Home. But the happy-go-lucky feel of this first teaser works around that possibility. It also suggests the rumored Endgame time-jump may also not occur. Unless, of course, Far From Home is set before Infinity War. But the teaser also features some glimpses of a world still rebuilding itself after The Snap and whatever happens in Endgame, so maybe Tony s absence is just a ruse for those looking too closely. Or, it could be a clue.Spider-Man: Far From Home opens on July 5.

Back in 1975, Steven Spielberg released a little movie about a killer shark into the world and changed the film industry forever, turning cinema into event entertainment and raking in boatloads of cash. More than four decades later, Hollywood continues to churn out its biggest, most spectacular movies during the summer months, and fans flock to theaters hungry for thrills and expecting to be wowed. All of this made us wonder about summer movie seasons past, not just from a commercial standpoint, but also from a critical perspectiv

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
This week s Ketchup brings you another nice headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Suicide Squad, The Eternals, and Halloween Kills. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI JUMPING THE GUNN ONTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD IN UNKNOWN ROLE(Photo by Jasin Boland/© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, Walt Disney Pictures briefly fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (if you re wondering why Marvel s not moving forward on that movie faster, that s the reason) over old jokes in poor taste were found on his Twitter feed. James Gunn has since been hired back, but in the meantime, he jumped ship to work for Warner Bros and DC Comics for The Suicide Squad, which will be a soft reboot sequel to the 2016 super villain movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. This week, James Gunn cast one of his frequent collaborators as well as one of Marvel s stars. First up was Nathan Fillion, who previously worked with James Gunn on both Slither and Super, and who also had a cameo voice acting role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The biggest surprise, however, came with the news that Taika Waititi will also have a role in The Suicide Squad. In addition to directing Thor: Ragnarok (in which he also voiced the alien Korg), Taika Waititi is also returning to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder (11/3/2021), which will come out less than three months after The Suicide Squad. James Gunn also this week cast comedian Steve Agee to provide the voice of the monstrous super villain King Shark. Warner Bros has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be five days after the fifth anniversary of the release of Suicide Squad on August 1, 2016.Other Top Headlines1. KIT HARRINGTON TAKING THE BLACK (KNIGHT) AGAIN IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by George Kraychyk/©TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)One of the big reveals at Disney s D23 this past weekend was the casting of Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, AKA Marvel s Black Knight, in next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020). Harrington will be joined by Richard Madden, he of Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, as Ikaris. This came along with confirmation that Gemma Chan will costar in The Eternals just one year after she also costarred in Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Minn-Erva. The inclusion of Black Knight and Minn-Erva in The Eternals is significant because both characters were long-time members of The Avengers from the 1980s to the 1990s. Black Knight actually first joined as the 14th Avenger in 1969, in-between Vision in 1968 and Black Widow in 1973. So if one wants to speculate about a future Avengers movie, they re both possibilities.2. BLACK PANTHER II SNAGS MARVEL S BIGGEST RELEASE DATE FOR THE SUMMER OF 2022(Photo by Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios didn t invent the notion of the weekend closest to May 1st being the best spot to start the summer season (that was arguably the 1999 reboot of The Mummy), but they ve certainly perfected the move. In recent years, that has included Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/2015), Captain America: Civil War (5/6/2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5/5/2017), Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/2018), and Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and will include Black Widow (5/1/2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2020). One of the highly anticipated films that was left out of Marvel s big panel of announcements at SDCC this year was Black Panther II, but we learned last weekend that they were just saving that news for D23, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022. No other premise or cast details were confirmed, but presumably, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright will all be back.3. BOYHOOD DIRECTOR TO SPEND 20 YEARS FILMING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)As of this writing in 2019, Broadway singer/actor Ben Platt is 25, and actress Beanie Feldstein is 26. But when their new movie comes out, they ll be more like 45 and 46. That s because Platt and Feldstein have both signed to star in a new musical from director Richard Linklater, who famously spent 12 years making the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Boyhood. That musical will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim s 1981 play Merrily We Roll Along, which was itself based on the 1934 play of the same name. Sondheim s play was set across a period from 1957 to 1976, and as with Boyhood, Richard Linklater plans on filming Merrily We Go Along over a 20 year period just like how its plot unfolds. Presuming Merrily We Roll Along is released around 2039 or 2040, Richard Linklater (born 7/30/1960) will be between 78 and 80.4. JAMIE FOXX AND TINA FEY TO STAR IN NEXT YEAR S SECOND PIXAR FILM, SOUL (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As much of an info dump as San Diego Comic-Con is, Disney s own D23 convention almost matches that. This year, a lot of that went to the upcoming Disney+ streaming app s content, but Disney itself made a few big feature film announcements. We ve known for a while now that Pixar s next film will be Onward (3/6/2020), a modern fantasy starring MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. But that s not all for Pixar in 2020: They also have Soul on their schedule for release on June 16, 2020. Pixar revealed at D23 that the stars of Soul will be Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. Fey will voice a disembodied human soul in the afterlife, with Jamie Foxx voicing a music teacher who appears to kick it just before a big career opportunity (cue the comparisons to Mr. Holland s Opus and also Pixar s Coco). Foxx and Fey will also be joined by the voices of Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Questlove (of The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and Phylicia Rashad (TV s The Cosby Show), with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) collaborating on the film s score.5. PAUL RUDD GROWS UP TO BE ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL IN NEXT YEAR S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Quite the phenomenon when a future megastar gets their career start in a horrible horror movie. Take, for example, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the horror franchise, which featured Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, one of the kids Laurie Strode was babysitting in the first movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in last year s hit soft reboot sequel Halloween (which earned over 5 million worldwide), and she s returning for Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and (possibly) Halloween Ends (10/15/2021), which will soon be filmed back-to-back. Paul Rudd was indeed approached about returning as Tommy Doyle, but due to scheduling conflicts with Ghostbusters 2020 (7/10/2020), Tommy Doyle will instead be played by Anthony Michael Hall. Rudd and Hall may not resemble each other, but if the Halloween slasher franchise now serves as a nostalgia feast, the casting of the costar of 1980s movies like Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club fits that theme perfectly.6. DISNEY ANIMATION S POST-FROZEN II TO BE RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Photo by Disney)Disney has had a mystery project scheduled for November 25, 2020 for a while, but it wasn t until last weekend s D23 that Disney revealed that it will be Raya and the Last Dragon. The animated fantasy adventure will be set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra, which will be inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia. Raya and the Last Dragon will mark the directorial debuts of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, who previously worked on Disney movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. The screenplay is being written by Adele Lim, whose Crazy Rich Asians featured Awkwafina, now also a voice role in Raya. The title character to be voiced by Cassie Steele of TV s Degrassi: The Next Generation.7. EVA LONGORIA TO DIRECT THE FLAMIN HOT CHEETOS MOVIE(Photo by Bauer Martinez Films/courtesy Everett Collection)Fox Searchlight has been moving forward with plans for a movie called Flamin Hot about how the popular brand of Cheetos snack foods came to be. They re hiring Eva Longoria to direct the true story of Richard Montanez, who was a janitor at Frito-Lay when he came up with the Flamin Hot Cheetos concept after noticing that regular Cheetos were not as flavorful as Mexican snacks on the same convenience store shelves.8. HAPPY DEATH DAY DIRECTOR TO BODY SWAP VINCE VAUGHN AND 22-YEAR-OLD KATHRYN NEWTON(Photo by Giles Keyte / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Director Chris Landon is newly available as it appears unlikely that Happy Death Day will receive another sequel after this year s box office disappointment of 2U, which earned just million domestically. For his next film, Landon will cowrite and direct a body swapping thriller. Vince Vaughn will star as a deranged serial killer whose body is taken over by a high school student played by 22-year-old Kathryn Newton, whose previous work includes Paranormal Activity 4 and Detective Pikachu.Like this? 1.12.6 2月喜迎2. GARY OLDMAN TO STAR IN DAVID FINCHER S CITIZEN KANE SCREENWRITER BIOPIC MANK (Photo by Emiley Schweich/Everett Collection)Hollywood has a long history of adapting industry biopics, but most of them are usually about actors or directors. Screenwriters, meanwhile, have been very rarely covered in the genre, especially if you separate those who had careers outside of the movies (2015 s Trumbo is a rare example of a screenwriter biopic). Herman J. Mankiewicz was one of the great screenwriters of Hollywood s golden age with a filmography that included Dinner at Eight, The Pride of the Yankees, some of the Marx Brothers most famous films (Duck Soup, Horse Feathers, Monkey Business), and most famously, Orson Welles Citizen Kane. Last year, Netflix released the long-lost Orson Welles film The Other Side of the Wind, and now the streaming studio is developing a Mankiewicz biopic called Mank. Gary Oldman is already attached to star as Mankiewicz in the film, which is expected to be David Fincher s (Fight Club, Seven, The Social Network) next project as director after a 5+ year gap following 2014 s Gone Girl.3. HELEN MIRREN AND CHARLIZE THERON BOTH RACING BACK FOR FAST AND FURIOUS 9 (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, John Nacion/Everett Collection)This summer sees the release of the spinoff Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, and the next Fast Furious film proper is currently three weeks into filming in London. Universal Pictures hasn t made many official announcements about the returning cast for Fast Furious 9, but we did learn last month that John Cena would be one of the new actors joining the franchise. (One cast member we know won t be returning for Fast Furious 9 is Dwayne Johnson, which he confirmed himself in January.) This week, Vin Diesel did confirm that two returning cast members (both of whom joined the franchise with 2017 s The Fate of the Furious) will be Charlize Theron as Cipher and Helen Mirren as Magdalene Shaw, the mother of the characters played by Jason Statham and Luke Evans (it s not yet known whether either will return). Universal Pictures has scheduled Fast Furious 9 for April 10, 2020, and Fast Furious 10 for April 2, 2021.4. DON CHEADLE JOINS SPACE JAM 2(Photo by DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, several of Marvel s heroes are moving to star in series for the upcoming Disney+ app (The Falcon The Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, and Hawkeye). One character whose future is not yet known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is War Machine, as played by Don Cheadle. This week, however, we learned about a new franchise that Cheadle will be joining, as he s now the biggest non-professional basketball star to join the cast of LeBron James sequel Space Jam 2, which is currently filming. Don Cheadle s role hasn t been revealed yet, but one has to wonder if he will be just playing himself, like Bill Murray did in the original Space Jam. Warner Bros. hasn t announced yet which NBA stars will be joining LeBron James in Space Jam 2. The original 1996 Space Jam was Rotten at 43%, but we re interpreting Don Cheadle s involvement

Adjusted Score: 109805% Critics Consensus: Another gorgeously animated, skillfully voiced entry in the Disney canon, Raya and the Last Dragon continues the studio's increased representation while reaffirming that its classic formula is just as reliable as ever. Synopsis: Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known... This year’s Oscar race may indeed come down to two battle-weary veterans, with Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in prime position for a classic Hollywood showdown next February. On the other side country, tucked back on a nondescript road amidst the farmland of New Jersey, sits the home of another iconic veteran who’s got a new film that may not challenge those films for Best Picture glory, but which thematically feels right at home with the Scorsese and Tarantino movies. It’s called Western Stars, and it marks the feature directorial debut of rock legend Bruce Springsteen.Co-directed by Springsteen and his longtime collaborator Thom Zimny, Western Stars is part concert film, part meditation on the complexities of getting older. With some of the film set on Springsteen’s farm and some set out among the quiet stillness of the Californian desert, Western Stars isn’t as big, bold, and flashy as both The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but all three films contemplate the effects of aging, of confronting regrets and mistakes, of trying to embrace what’s there instead of what isn’t. Springsteen, who turned 70 last month, is certainly aware of the similarities between the pictures – and even more revealing: Irishman and Hollywood are two of his favorite films of the year.Seated comfortably on a couch inside his New Jersey recording studio, dressed in classic Springsteen attire (blue jeans, jean jacket and white undershirt, natch), the music legend and now film director spoke at length with Rotten Tomatoes about how his love of film has inspired him as a man and as an artist. From the Westerns of John Ford to the sprawling meditative works of Terrence Malick, the musician doesn’t hold back when it comes to his own cinematic influences.(Photo by Rob DeMartin, © Warner Bros. )“The Grapes of Wrath had a huge influence on me when I saw it – just the imagery and the story it was telling,” he said. “Of course, The Searchers and all the Westerns, which I had seen as a kid, but never really absorbed. Also, the noir stuff, like Out of the Past with Robert Mitchum… that was a huge film for me. And then there were more modern things, like Martin Scorsese’s pictures – but also I remember at the time I wrote ‘Nebraska,’ I had seen a Terrence Malick picture for the first time. [His films] are meditative; lots of voiceover… Days of Heaven, Tree of Life. The soundscape for Nebraska really came from Badlands, the Malick picture.”Springsteen told Rotten Tomatoes he began watching a lot of films when he was about 27, “from ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ forward.” He said: “I became a bit of a film buff; I was looking at other artists and the way they were conceptualizing their work. So of course, I ran into John Ford, and I thought it was interesting how he was working on certain consistent themes in every picture. How every picture sort of related to another one in certain ways; you had the cast of characters and an ensemble that he worked with really steadily. You know, I had my band and I was interested in telling this longer story where each album would relate to another in a certain way.”That consistency in collaboration is what also drew Springsteen to Scorsese’s work, and it’s what is top of mind when he discusses the director’s epic new work, The Irishman.“With The Irishman, it was beautiful to see that cast working together again,” he said. “To see Marty at the top of his game… those guys and that history, you’re never going to see that again. That group of actors – there’s never going to be a group of actors quite like that again. And if you grew up with them, as folks in my generation did, that’s a powerful picture.”(Photo by Rob DeMartin, © Warner Bros. )In Western Stars, Springsteen chose a unique format through which to share his newest album with the world. Instead of touring with it, he created this film as a record of the music and the stories behind each song, but also of his love for his wife, Patti Scialfa, who plays beside him on each tune with the duo backed by an orchestra inside an old barn on Springsteen’s sprawling farm in New Jersey. The film – featuring songs about lost, often broken men in search of redemption interspersed with thoughtful, almost-poetic words of wisdom from the Boss himself – feels like it’s about a man letting go of his mistakes in order to embrace the love that’s all around him.We asked Springsteen if that was an accurate take on Western Stars as a whole.“That’s as good an explanation of it as any, you know,” he said with a smile. “It’s about a trip or a journey that everyone has to make. When you’re young, you wanna do what you wanna do when you wanna do it. Individual freedom means an awful amount to you. But as you get into your thirties and certainly your forties, life begins to thin out, if that’s how you’re approaching it. And so [you’re on this] pursuit of a fuller life, and in a very strange way it’s the domestic constraints [that] provide you with a freer life. As you get older, you have a home, a place to gather yourself and reasons for the work that you’re performing. The definition of what freedom is alters as you grow older, and so the film is about the way that that word changes as time passes by. But it’s also about the price you pay if you don’t grow or change as that time passes by.”As he so often does at all of his shows, Springsteen ends the film with a more celebratory encore, covering Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy,” as if to leave audiences with one last anecdote: never stop chasing your dreams.“The character in the film makes this journey, and it needed to be celebrated a little bit,” he said. “When the song comes up, it’s a release for the audience. It’s also slightly connected to the genre I was working in; Glen Campbell was an inspiration for a lot of the song stylings.Of course, it’s hard not to discuss “Rhinestone Cowboy” and the aging cowboys featured in Western Stars and The Irishman without also bringing up the aging cowboys at the center of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Springsteen not only told us that he had seen the film, but also that he’s a big fan of Tarantino’s latest. “I did see it, and I thought, yeah, that’s a funny little coincidence,” he said when the thematic similarities were brought up. “I really loved it – that was one of my favorite pictures of the past year. It was quite touching, and quite lovely.”Western Stars is in limited release October 25.

Gretel & Hansel (2020) 63% We haven t even spent an entire month in 2020 yet, but we re already getting our fourth big horror release of the year in this week s Gretel Hansel. Like last week s The Turning, this one is also rooted in classic literature, as it offers a new take on the well-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Sophia Lillis plays 16-year-old Gretel, who, along with her brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey), has been sent into the woods in search of a convent to take them in, since their destitute mother can no longer provide for them. Of course, as anyone familiar with the source material might predict, the pair happen upon a mysterious cabin en route and, tempted by the feast they spy inside, decide to pull up a couple of chairs and hang out with the creepy woman who lives there and who might be a witch looking to fatten them up and eat them later. Director Oz Perkins is no stranger to horror his previous films include I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and The Blackcoat s Daughter   and he does his best to craft an atmosphere-driven arthouse chiller, but most critics say Gretel Hansel is far too leisurely paced and devoid of real terror that it loses steam quickly and never quite recovers. There are bright spots here: Sophia Lillis s acting chops are on full display, Alice Krige is suitably unsettling as Holda the witch, and pretty much everyone even those who generally didn t like the film has nothing but great things to say about the film s lush imagery and stunning cinematography. Ultimately, though, fans of traditional horror fare may find the film s deliberate pacing and third-act liberties with the source material a bit too much to swallow. This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as Halloween Kills, Nightmare Alley, The Suicide Squad, and Tomb Raider 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYTOMB RAIDER 2 OFFICIALLY SCHEDULED FOR 2021(Photo by Warner Bros.)Last year s reboot of the video game adaptation Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander didn t exactly blow up the box office domestically (just million from a budget of million). Some box office pundits argued (and some didn t) that the surprise success of Black Panther was a factor in disappointing box office for movies (like Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle in Time, Red Sparrow, and Ready Player One) that might have performed better otherwise. Perhaps that s why Warner Bros and MGM are indeed moving forward with Tomb Raider 2, effectively giving Vikander a second chance with the Lara Croft character. Ben Wheatley (Free Fire, High-Rise) will direct the sequel, which has been scheduled for release on March 19, 2021. It s not yet known which specific Tomb Raider video game (if any at all) might be adapted for the film. (The first was loosely adapted from the 2013 video game reboot of the same title.). The 2018 Tomb Raider was Rotten at 52% on the Tomatometer, but hopefully Ben Wheatley can improve on that score with the sequel. As for the box office prospects for Tomb Raider 2, some writers are already speculating that its challenger in 2021 will be Marvel s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.Other Top Headlines1. ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN CHILD STAR TO RETURN FOR HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The original 1978 slasher movie Halloween revolved around two neighboring babysitters played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Nancy Kyes watching children in houses across the street from each other. Although Brian Andrews played Tommy Doyle, the boy Curtis Laurie Strode was sitting, his role was replaced by Paul Rudd in 1995 s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, and will be played by Anthony Michael Hall (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) in next year s Halloween Kills (10/16/2020). As it turns out, Tommy won t be the only kid returning in Halloween Kills. Despite her role in the original film, Kyle Richards is probably best known for appearing on the hit TV series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (she s also Paris and Nicky Hilton s aunt), but she will return to reprise her Halloween role as Lindsey Wallace. Although no premise details have emerged yet for Halloween Kills, the casting of Hall and Richards suggests that Michael Myers might be returning to Haddonfield this time around to target the kids that he didn t get to kill in 1978. Jamie Lee Curtis and Judy Greer are also both reprising their roles from last year s Halloween (Certified Fresh at 78%). Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) is also being filmed back-to-back with the third movie, Halloween Ends, which is scheduled for release a year later on October 15, 2021.2. Pictures)Guillermo del Toro has obviously been a highly respected genre director since at least 2006 s Pan s Labyrinth (Certified Fresh at 95%), but after The Shape of Water (Certified Fresh at 92%) won the Best Picture Academy Award last year, his clout is arguably now right up there with any other top director. Guillermo del Toro s first film as director following that win will be a remake of the 1947 carnival thriller Nightmare Alley (Fresh at 100%), and it quickly attracted seven-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as its leads (in the roles originally played by Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell). The biggest role that remained uncast until this week was Molly, who was basically the female romantic lead for Cooper s character, but we can now report that the role has been filled by Rooney Mara. Mara is also a two-time Academy Award nominee, once for Best Supporting Actress (Carol) and once for Best Actress (the 2011 remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Fox Searchlight is expected to schedule Nightmare Alley sometime in prime awards season in late 2020.3. DOCTOR WHO STAR PETER CAPALDI ENLISTED FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD (Photo by Simon Ridgway / ©BBC)Much like the previous Suicide Squad movie in 2016, director James Gunn s soft reboot The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021) is expected to have a fairly large ensemble cast. Following the recent casting of comedian Steve Agee as the voice of King Shark, the new Suicide Squad team membership is pretty much filled, but presumably the new lineup will be facing multiple foes, and so far, none of those villains (or heroes) have been confirmed. So, we don t have any idea who Peter Capaldi (A.K.A. the 12th Doctor Who) might be playing. Current Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson is also reportedly in the running for a small role (which is not surprising, as the show will return soon, so his time will be limited). Other new cast members in The Suicide Squad will include David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniel Melchior (Ratcatcher), and Idris Elba, Nathan Fillian, and Taika Waititi in unknown roles. Pete Davidson also has an untitled comedy based on his life story scheduled next summer for June 19, 2020.4. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SENTENCED TO STAR IN EX-CON DRAMA PALMER(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima /© Amazon)Like many (many) pop singers before and after him, Justin Timberlake has branched out since 2000 to include roles in movies ranging from animated films (Shrek the Third, Trolls), comedies (The Love Guru, Friends with Benefits), and Academy Award-nominated dramas (The Social Network, Inside Llewyn Davis). After taking a brief break following 2017 s Wonder Wheel, Timberlake is ready to star in another film, which will be Palmer, in which he will play a recently released ex-con trying to get his life back on track. Palmer will be directed by actor-turned-director Fisher Stevens, who won an Academy Award in 2010 for the documentary The Cove.5. EMILY BLUNT, JON HAMM, AND CHRISTOPHER WALKEN SPICE THINGS UP WITH WILD MOUNTAIN THYME (Photo by Cindy Ord, Amy Sussman, Robert Marquardt/Getty Images)Outside Mullingar was a play set in Ireland and featuring a cast that included Debra Messing (TV s Will Grace) that debuted on Broadway in 2014, and now it s being adapted as an independent movie called Wild Mountain Thyme. Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) has been attached to star in Wild Mountain Thyme for a while now, and this week, we learned who his co-stars will be. They include Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Jon Hamm (TV s Mad Men), and Christopher Walken. Blunt and Dornan will play obstinate star-crossed lovers, whose families are caught up in a feud over a hotly contested patch of land that separates their two farms. (Blunt is reportedly replacing English actress Holliday Grainger, but no reason was given for the movie.). Production is scheduled to start in Ireland on September 30th, and Wild Mountain Thyme also recently acquired distribution rights in the USA.6. BILLY CRYSTAL AND TIFFANY HADDISH TO CO-STAR HERE TODAY (Photo by Ben Gabbe, Rich Fury/Getty Images)It was only a little over two years ago that Tiffany Haddish had her big breakout role in Girls Trip, and she s certainly stayed very busy since, with five movies released in 2018, another five in 2019, and a few different TV series roles as well. Tiffany Haddish is also now attached to star alongside Billy Crystal in an independent comedy called Here Today, which Crystal will also direct. Based on a short story called The Prize by screenwriter Alan Zweibel, Here Today will tell the story of a veteran comedy writer (Crystal) who is slowly but surely losing his grip on reality and befriends a talented young New York street singer (Haddish). Billy Crystal s previous directorial credits include Mr. Saturday Night, Forget Paris, and the HBO baseball period drama 61*.7. AMANDA SEYFRIED TO STAR IN DREAM WORLD OF A MOUTHFUL OF AIR (Photo by Kimberly French/©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)For obvious reasons, it s not always easy to get a firm grasp of what a movie will look like when all we have to go on is the description in a trade article, but sometimes, it s fun to imagine. This week, in a story that seemed to go relatively unreported, we learned of an independent drama called A Mouthful of Air, in which Amanda Seyfried will star, supported by a cast that includes Paul Giamatti, Finn Wittrock (TV s American Horror Story), Amy Irving (Yentl), and Jennifer Carpenter (TV s Dexter). Seyfried will play a new mom and children’s book author, who escapes into the bright Crayola colored world of her creation in order to leave behind the darkness caused by her post partum depression. It s not yet known to what degree that Crayola colored world will be depicted, but the description sort of reminds this writer of the TV show Pushing Daisies or the Robin Williams movie What Dreams May Come.8. WILL SMITH TO FOLLOW UP BRIGHT WITH COMPLETELY UNRELATED BRILLIANCE (Photo by Scott Garfield/©Netflix)Earlier this year, Disney finalized their plans to acquire the Fox film and TV properties, which excited many X-Men fans eager to see characters like Wolverine join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The bad news, however, is that X-Men wasn t included in Marvel s recent Phase 4 announcements for 2020 and 2021. Marvel doesn t have any sort of trademark on the idea of a minority of young people being born with spectacular abilities, so a novel like Marcus Sakey s Brilliance is free to explore that territory. Paramount Pictures this week acquired the film rights to Brilliance, with an eye towards Will Smith starring and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman adapting the screenplay. Goldsman previously wrote superhero movies like Batman Robin (Rotten at 11%) and worked on comic book movies like Jonah Hex (Rotten at 12%) and The Losers (Rotten at 48%). Goldsman and Smith s previous collaborations together have included Hancock (Rotten at 41%), I Am Legend (Fresh at 68%), and I, Robot (Rotten at 56%).9. SALARY DISPARITY DISPUTE ERUPTS OVER THE CRAZY RICH ASIANS SEQUELS (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Not unlike Marvel s Black Panther, last year s comedy hit Crazy Rich Asians was celebrated for the positive message it sent about the possibilities of representation for all types of people both in front of and behind the camera, and the types of stories that are told. That s why this week s news about the two planned Crazy Rich Asians sequels (based on the books China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems) are particularly troubling. Screenwriter Adele Lim, who co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians with Peter Chiarelli, reportedly left the two sequel projects this week over salary disparity issues. Reportedly, Chiarelli was offered 0,000 and million for the sequels, whereas Lim was only offered a sum in the 0,000 range, representing something like a mere 11% to 13% of what Chiarelli was to be paid. The explanation reportedly given is that Chiarelli s salary offers were based upon his previous experience, as he has more credits than Lim currently does. This piece also delves into other questions that this Crazy Rich Asians controversy raises.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

In its rush to close out the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker left a lot on the table. Pretty much everything not directly related to Rey, Luke, Leia, Ben Solo, and Sheev Palpatine was left hanging for future storytellers to resolve in comics, novels, television shows, and, yes, future films. And, as it happens, at least a few ideas directly related to them are still in the margins as well. But with so much about the other characters (and the galaxy for that matter) unresolved, it would seem there is plenty of material for a direct follow-up to The Rise of Skywalker – an Episode X, as it were.So let’s go on a thought experiment and consider what an Episode X might look like and why it may eventually be vital for Star Wars to continue to the episode saga if perhaps in a slightly different way going forward.Episode X Was Part Of The Original Plan(Photo by TM and ©copyright Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved courtesy Everett Collection)In the very early days of Star Wars success, George Lucas’ vision was very much in flux. As he has mentioned in numerous interviews, the film was the result of a massive 200-page script that more or less formed the backbone of the Original Trilogy (and, as we’ve discussed elsewhere, the eventual Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace). Early drafts also hinted at the sequels, with one revision directly telling the reader the Leia character would have a larger role in the next film. But even as The Empire Strikes Back began to coalesce into a shooting script, Lucas and his collaborators considered a 12-episode series. That sequence was envisioned as more of a James Bond-style format, with fewer narrative ties between episodes and certain films acting more as preludes or epilogues to larger story ideas like the Clone Wars. It was abandoned in favor of a nine-episode story in which the later sequels would see Leia become queen of her people, Luke finding his sister (who was not initially intended to be Leia), and an Episode IX introduction of the Emperor. All of this changed as Lucas became disenchanted with Star Wars during the development of Return of the Jedi, which condensed several ideas from the later episodes into its plot.Nonetheless, we totally expect the early references to the 12-episode cycle to become part of the Lucasfilm narrative when it inevitably announces Episode X.And make no mistake, Episode X is inevitable.A Matter of Timing(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Although inevitable, the timing of Episode X is less of a certainty. After its experiment with yearly Star Wars films proved untenable, Disney pulled back and cancelled all of its Star Wars Story spin-off pictures. A film is scheduled for a 2022 release – with a director reportedly already on board and subsequent films scheduled every two years afterward through 2026 – but it is understood this project will not continue story threads from the Skywalker Saga.Granted, the possibility still exists that this film could be labeled as Episode X.But presuming Disney sticks to its new plan of slightly more sporadic Star Wars film releases, an Episode X might be what people want after a decade away from the episodic saga and, seemingly, the forward momentum of Star Wars into an uncharted, post-Palpatine age.A New New Republic?(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)As much as the films are about the Skywalker clan struggling to save the galaxy, the are also about the galaxy’s own failure to prevent its fall into an Empire. Even in the Sequel Trilogy, we see its influence continue and the New Republic unable to cope with those remnants coalescing into the First Order. It leaves the galaxy with the problem the Republic faced in the infamous Phantom Menace senate scenes: the centralized government is ill-equipped to prevent its own collapse. In its final form, the Sequel Trilogy was also not equipped to address this problem; it chose to wipe out the New Republic instead. So it leaves the remains of the Resistance with a different set of questions than those the Rebel Alliance faced after the Battle of Endor. For the latter, there was a stated goal of restoring the Republic. But will the weary Resistance fighters of the Sequel Trilogy want to do that?In lieu of a Republic, Episode X could take us into a galaxy without that central leadership. It could be an era when the hyperspace routes are patrolled by more localized coalitions with uneasy alliances and a tacit agreement not to disrupt trade. If we need some familiar faces to give it Star Wars continuity, the Trade Federation could re-emerge as a power player as it maintains security along the spaceways.Sure, it sounds a little dry – and maybe too much like The Phantom Menace for some – but it offers a new context in which to set up a new adventure. Perhaps a core group of Resistance fighters are still trying to restore the Republic. Or, maybe, just trying to survive in this more lawless galaxy is enough motivation for heroes new and old to engage in a star war.The Fate Of The Jedi(Photo by John Wilson/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)We’ll be honest, the only final end for the Sith and the Jedi would be a galaxy-wide repudiation of the Force itself – something it seems cannot actually happen, as the Force will always find sentient beings happy to access its power. This means the fate of the Jedi must be decided beyond the vague allusions to the future at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. And while Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) story is seemingly done with her finding an identity, the Expanded Universe has taught us – to borrow a Watchmen line – nothing ever ends.Your desire to see the restoration of the Jedi depends entirely on how much you like their view of the Force. We’ll admit the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game and its sequel colored our understanding of their absolutism. In that light, we hope the Order can emerge in the post-TROS time period as something more gray. Both the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies seemingly call for a notion of balance as well. But it is possible that subtext is just too unruly for a continuing series of space adventure movies. Maybe the Order just needs to be unambiguously restored with Rey and Finn (John Boyega) leading the way. An Episode X in this vein could mirror something like The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, with a young adherent learning the ways of the Force and, perhaps, undergoing a trial to face their own Dark Side. While the conflict would be more personal, it would reveal an Order more stabilized than we ever see in any of the films. And in an interesting quirk, this new Order could be filled with all of those escaped stormtroopers like Finn and Jannah (Naomi Ackie), who felt the pull of the Force so strongly that it prevented them from engaging in the First Order’s oppression. Also, for just this moment, we’ll disregard the fact a bunch of former child soldiers are learning to become warrior magicians because we’re still trying to get an unambiguous victory here for the Jedi.Allowing Other Stories To Advance(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)In concluding the Skywalker story, Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn, and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) were left by the wayside. New characters like Jannah, Zorri (Keri Russell), and Beaumont (Dominic Monaghan) barely had a moment to establish themselves before the final iris-out. And though the actors all seem pretty burned out on Star Wars at the moment – a common occurrence at the end of these trilogies – the characters deserve better.Giving any one of them the lead position in Episode X would lead to interesting new directions and satisfy fans of those characters – yes, they exist – who felt they all got short shrift in the resolution of Rey and Ben’s (Adam Driver) story. And since some of them are certainly underdeveloped, Episode X could be a film in which they receive that much-needed development. An ace X-Wing pilot, a former Stormtrooper, a mechanic, and a smuggler form a pretty strong starting point in terms of character dynamics. No doubt many Star Wars RPG parties are composed of that exact mixture right now. With the burden of Palpatine and the Skywalkers off their backs, this group could go chart some of the uncharted new galaxy left in The Rise of Skywalker’s wake.Breaking The Trilogy Cycle(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Throughout this discussion, we’ve avoided looking at a potential Episode X as the beginning of a new trilogy for a very specific reason: the format no longer works for the open-ended narrative Star Wars evolved into. The fans’ love of the EU, the success of The Mandalorian, and Disney’s investment in the property as a whole means there can never be a true conclusion. Star Wars is a suite of storytelling tools now. And though commodified by a gigantic corporation, it is the modern mythology early fans always hoped it would become. Star Wars would continue even if there wasn t a huge monetary benefit in its longevity. At the same time, it still needs a major storyline to anchor the various ways people interact with the mythology. Episode X could be the beginning of a new saga structure. Like the looser concept of the 12-episode cycle, new Star Wars episode films could be more complete story units on their own while furthering an overall vision of the post-Skywalker galaxy. Sure, it could become as vast and unwieldy as the old EU and its tiered canon structure, but the essential bits of Star Wars lore are for another civilization to agree on a long, long time from now. For those of us living in it, it means an almost boundless array of Star Wars ideas to call our own, while we occasionally gather together for a new episode. And that next new planet, character, or idea may be reason enough for Episode X to become a reality.Like this?
