After what feels like 18 months of anticipation and suspense, The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” concluded the only way it could on Tuesday night on DC s Legends of Tomorrow. Taking its inspiration from the 1985 DC Comics maxiseries, a certain change to the status quo was inevitable. But as the producers of the various programs explained to Rotten Tomatoes, this change was always the plan and key to the Arrowverse s growth moving forward. The new format may not be a surprise to readers of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comics, but the choice to pull the trigger and do it on television — to say nothing of its implications for other DC Entertainment media — is unexpected. Well, perhaps not as unexpected as Crisis writer Marv Wolfman s cameo, of course. Nevertheless, the change means the individual Arrowverse shows will look different when they begin to return next week, so take a tour with us as we investigate this new world and what the Arrowverse will look like in 2020.Earth-Prime Debuts(Photo by Colin Bentley/The CW)As revealed on Tuesday night, the universe was reborn. In its wake is Earth-Prime, an amalgam world in which the CW heroes all co-exist.“We knew from last year that we were going to merge [the worlds] and create Earth-CW, basically,” executive producer Marc Guggenhim said of the “Crisis” conclusion. In choosing a name for this new existence, Guggenheim and the other showrunners latched on to Earth-Prime, which in the DC Comics tradition is the Earth where we, the readers of DC Comics, are said to exist.Of course, Earth-Prime became a fictional world when a Superboy appeared on it shortly before the original Crisis series. And it only gets more messy as subsequent writers returned to the idea and its “Superboy Prime.” But for Guggenheim, the name was the right fit for their new reality. “I just personally liked the sound of Earth-Prime. So all the CW shows [are there],” he said.“[But] Riverdale’s not there,” Batwoman executive producer Caroline Dries interjected.“That would be very weird,” DC’s Legends of Tomorrow co-showrunner Keto Shimizu added.“The CW superhero shows,” Guggenheim clarified.Though now united on one Earth, Guggenheim was quick to point out this new Earth is not the Earth-1 of Arrow, The Flash or Legends. “It s a completely different Earth,” he explained. What that means in the long-term will be revealed as the individual shows move forward. For The Flash and Legends, Earth-Prime s resemblance to Earth-1 means various quirks may continue to appear for seasons to come, like Nash (Tom Cavanagh) being a distinct entity from Harrison Wells. But for Supergirl and Black Lightning, both of which inhabited worlds of their own, Earth-Prime will be major changes to their status quos.Supergirl Welcomes Back an Old Friend(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Supergirl co-showrunner Robert Rovener teased the Crisis was a huge event, and impacts everything going on in the show. This is certainly the case from the brief glimpses of the Earth-Prime National City in the final Crisis episode. Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) is a beloved humanitarian who owns the DEO. He is also Supergirl s chief supporter, or so we re told. How this will actually play out is anyone s guess, but we assume the Lex s presence may alter Kara s (Melissa Benoist) problems with Lena (Katie McGrath) and Leviathan considerably. But even as these concerns simmer, the show s technological bent will continue with Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) returning from the 31st century. Hopefully, the 31st century of the Legion of Superheroes is a brighter place thanks to Winn s time there. Maybe he can bring some of that positivity back to the 21st century.Black Lightning’s World ExpandsThough Black Lightning s creative team was unavailable for comment on the Earth-Prime status quo, stars Christine Adams and Marvin “Krondon” Jones III offered a few glimpses into their post- Crisis reality.“We are exposed to [the] other universes. It s going to become bigger in Freeland,” Jones said. But even with new worlds opened to them — and Jefferson (Cress Williams) obtaining a seat at the Hall of Justice — the situation in Freeland may leave them walled in for some time yet. Of course, Jefferson s new membership in the superhero community may leave viewers to wonder why Barry (Grant Gustin) and Kara are not rushing to his aid. In our reality, it comes down to the fact Black Lightning is shot in Atlanta while the rest of the shows are produced in Vancouver, but Earth-Prime will need to find a good answer for the series standing apart from its Arrowverse siblings. As Adams put it, “In a world that was kind of real before and set in a real place versus this crossover world, how are we going to marry those two things?”Of course, moving Black Lightning and its situation to Earth-Prime means the Markovians will be dealing with more superheroes beyond the Pierce family. Maybe Jefferson can finally form the Outsiders.Batwoman Has an Identity CrisisSince Earth-Prime resembles Earth-1, Dries said the biggest Crisis shock wave Kate (Ruby Rose) faces will stem from that broken Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) she encountered in Part 2.“She just looked at her future in the mirror, and is like, ‘Is this who I m going to become?’ Dries said of the crossover s lasting emotional impact. That worry will also seed the continuing friendship between Kate and Kara — a World s Finest pairing already glimpsed in “Crisis” itself and further cemented by Kate s presence alongside the Danvers sisters in the story s final minutes. As for Alice (Rachel Skarsten) and the other characters?“It s a little tricky, because our characters aren t yet exposed to this notion of multiple universes, and superheroes with powers and stuff,” Dries said.DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Has Trust IssuesFor Shimizu, the challenge in constructing Legends fifth year was more about writing a thematic sequel to “Crisis” before it was completely written: “It was very tricky for us.” Nonetheless, “Crisis” sets up a few ideas for Sara Lance (The CW) going forward even as the show prepares to say goodbye to Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Nora Darkh (Courtney Ford).“ Crisis hits [Sara] pretty hard,” Shimizu said. “[But] in a good way.”It s easy to think Oliver s insistence on the heroes building trust will be part of Sara s story going forward. With Constantine (Matt Ryan), Mick (Dominic Purcell), Nora, and Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellars) always ready to choose the morally-gray option, establishing trust is definitely a good thing — even if its just trusting Mick to rob a place blind. And as Crisis seemingly left Sara as the overall leader of the superhero community, it is possible the new season of Legends will focus on her becoming comfortable with the idea. Also, there s that issue about Behrad (Shayan Sobhian) replacing Zari (Tala Ashe) as a Legend. That will no doubt be a runner as the Legends attempt to return history s greatest monsters back into Hell. The Flash Has Miles To Go Before Baby Nora West-Allen ArrivesAccording to Guggenheim, one of Barry s choices in Crisis — we presume it was his insistence on getting into the Speed Force — will reverberate throughout the rest of The Flash s sixth season. Previously, Flash showrunner Eric Wallace told us the post- Crisis storyline will focus on a new antagonist — quite possible the shadowy arms operation Barry and Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) investigated in episode 6 of the season – while Ralph will finally meet Sue Dearbon, to be played by Natalie Dreyfuss. Sue s such a delight, Wallace told us back in October. But do not expect any of season 6 s stories to lead in the direction of Nora West-Allen s birth. Not this season, Wallace said. But that doesn t mean a huge hint to Nora isn t coming. And, as it happens, some of Iris West s experiences during the Bronze Age of comics may become fodder for the show. We do need Iris emotionally to get to this place, he teased. Now, that storyline supports that. And considering Nash s role in the final part of Crisis, we imagine he will be atoning for his misdeeds and finding a new life for himself on this new Earth-Prime.Arrow Makes Way for Green Arrow the CanariesArrow comes to its end later this month. Next week’s episode will be a backdoor pilot for Green Arrow the Canaries – starring Katherine McNamara, Juliana Harkavy, and Katie Cassidy – while the episode after that will be the series finale. Guggenheim and showrunner Beth Schwartz declined to speak about the conclusion, but it will feature Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak. For those with quick memories, Felicity was last seen in 2040, telling the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) she was ready to be reunited with Oliver. Does he still live on some other plane of existence or will she also reach for the peace Oliver accepted at end of Crisis? Superman and Lois Series Takes Off(Photo by Katie Yu/The CW)Though not discussed by the showrunners when we spoke to them about “Crisis,” Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois’s (Elizabeth Tulloch) survival leads into their own series, Superman and Lois. The program will debut in the 2020-2021 broadcast season and see the two adjusting to life as working parents. Lois reference to the boys suggests Clark will have to deal with more than baby Jonathan when he gets home. Presumably, the series will age him to a tween or teenage while the second child takes his place as an infant. Anything is possible — just look at the way Sara Diggle was restored and made a little older than J.J.Stargirl Rises(Photo by DC Universe)And as revealed in the Crisis conclusion, Stargirl (which will stream on DC Universe and air on The CW the next day) will take place on a newly reformed Earth-2. It makes total sense as Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) has strong ties to the Justice Society of America — a team traditionally placed on Earth-2 in the comics.Meanwhile, it was also nice to see Titans recognized as the show of Earth-9, Doom Patrol as happening on Earth-21, and Swamp Thing taking place on Earth-19. Since most of the DC Universe shows are also produced by Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, giving them a place in the Multiverse was one of the miniseries greatest surprises. The Multiverse Is RebornAs for the Multiverse, it has been born anew with Earth-Prime as its new anchor. While the original Crisis comic book condensed all realities into one new Earth, the producers of the television Crisis saw the value in keeping the concept around around. Now, the DC Universe streaming series, theatrical films, and upcoming shows like HBO Max s Green Lantern all exist within a framework very close to the CW s reality. And as Ezra Miller s absolutely shocking appearance in Crisis confirms, the Arrowverse is a place where anything can happen and just about any DC Comics character can appear. It is, oddly enough, the best of all possibilities and an inadvertent fix to DC Entertainment s wild and sometimes contradictory array of content — they are all true in the infinitude. At least until the next crisis. But at least there will be a group of Superfriends to defend reality against it. u had?Arkin: The show doesn’t specifically, but I had two great, great acting teachers who I revered. I learned an enormous amount in different directions from both of them. The first guy, who had himself studied with Stanislavski, was named Benjamin Zemach. I studied with him out here in Los Angeles. The second guy was my professor at Bennington. His name was Larry Arrick.(Photo by Netflix)RT: Had you and Michael encountered each other through business circles over the years?Arkin: No, we had never met until about a month before we signed on for the show. I felt if you’re going to be working with somebody for five years it’d be a good idea to sit next to them for half an hour and find out if you happen to like each other, so we had a lunch and it was fine and I signed on. It feels enormously comfortable, flexible, and playful.RT: Was the chemistry immediate from that lunch?Arkin: Yeah, it seemed to be. A little bit tentative for an hour or two, and then slowly loosened up, and it continued to loosen up as the series went on. I feel incredibly trusted by him, and I trust him tremendously.RT: Did you and Michael ever discuss his remake of The In-Laws?Arkin: [Laughs] We have mercifully kept off that subject.RT: Well, I’m glad that question made you laugh. Your character has an emotional breakdown at the dry cleaners in episode three. Was it difficult to perform? How did you get there?Arkin: Oh my God, it was a nightmare, that day. I knew what was coming, and I just had to rev myself and use every ounce of acting training I had to get myself into that place. That and also the speech I gave at the funeral was similar — wrenchingly painful days on what is supposed to be a comedic show. I’m not criticizing it. It goes in a lot of directions, which is one of my favorite things about it. I just hope it doesn’t go in those specific directions very often.RT: In Dumbo you’re playing a brand new character. Tell us about J. Griffin Remington.Arkin: I’m trying to buy the circus. I’m a magnate. I’m interested in this new act and kind of a plutocrat, trying to run everything.RT: Were you able to see any of the Dumbo footage?Arkin: Not a frame. Not a frame, not a photograph.RT: Was that a new experience with visual effects?Arkin: Looking at things that aren’t there? Yeah, pretty much. I haven’t done a lot in the way of fantasy, but It was just looking at an elephant that wasn’t there rather than a person or a car going by.The Kominsky Method premieres Friday, November 16 on Netflix.

Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes. [I chose this one] because of Gena, because I watched it when my mind was first opened up to what cinema could be when I was a young actress starting out and discovering the scope of film. Everything that Gena does in this, as well as in A Woman under the Influence, the way that it explores femininity and masculinity and the devastating edges of masculinity, as well as so many colors that a woman can be – her fierceness, her devastation, her heartbreak, her going mad. And then to understand a film could be shot in someone s house, that you could just do this – you could find a way to carve your own path away from prescribed studio roles. So, I chose this for the whole package. And I had the honor of working with Nick [Cassavetes, son of John and Gena] and Gena in a film that Nick directed and I saw that it was a completely different way of working than I had ever been exposed to. The collaboration between all the departments and how we were all… you hear it a lot, “we re like a family,” but in that case, it really was. Everyone was together. The relationship, for example, between me and the set designer was extremely close because Nick wanted it that way. He said, “Well, this is your character. Where would you live? Let s all do this all together.” So that makes for a more relaxed performance and it s just more fun.Opening Night is also important to me because it s about the theater. Those scenes where she s backstage and about to go on, or the scenes in the rehearsal room, but particularly when she s about to go on stage, that visceral thrill and terror, the way he catches it… theater is my heart so it combines a lot of my loves in that film.魔域boss版llion (.7 million total)Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse– .3 million (3.6 million total)The Mule – .7 million (.7 million total)Vice – .7 million (.6 million total)Holmes Watson – .3 million (.7 million total)Second Act  .2 million (.7 million total)Ralph Breaks the Internet – .5 million (5.7 million total)The Grinch – .1 million (3.2 million total)

(Photo by Mitchell Haaseth/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images)On April 9, 2009, NBC debuted a new workplace sitcom from The Office creator Greg Daniels and executive producer Mike Schur called Parks and Recreation. Set in the small town of Pawnee, Indiana, the series followed the government employees working in the city s parks and recreation department — particularly the eager do-gooder Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her gruff mustachioed boss, Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman). While it took a season or so for the show to settle into itself, the series soon became, along with The Office, one of NBC s most beloved sitcoms, introducing audiences to the rest of the eccentric residents of Pawnee and the civil servants doing their best to keep order in the city. On the tenth anniversary of its debut, let s take a look back at the show s main cast members and what they ve been up to in the decade since its premiere.Like this? The Way Back (2020) 84% Underdog sports stories have been a reliable staple of the movie industry for a long time, so much so that they ve been molded and refined to fit into a fairly predictable formula. With that in mind, it usually takes something extra to make one stand out, and critics say this week s The Way Back has that in an outstanding performance from Ben Affleck. Affleck stars as Jack Cunningham, a construction worker who was once an elite high school basketball player but now spends his days and nights binge-drinking. When he gets an unexpected call from his alma mater to coach their hoops team, he reluctantly takes them up on the offer and begins a slow healing process as he attempts to shepherd his kids to a few meaningful wins. Critics say what makes The Way Back effective is that it s not merely an inspirational sports story, nor is it merely one about addiction, but a carefully crafted hybrid that doesn t provide easy answers or overly sentimental triumphant moments. It s also notable that, prior to filming the movie, Affleck himself endured some very public battles with addiction, and as a result, he brings a personal gravity to his role that leaps off the screen. Audiences will no doubt come to The Way Back with certain expectations, simply based on the fact that it s a story about a troubled new coach learning to bond with his team, but if this doesn t hit all of those familiar beats in a predictable way, it still offers a worthwhile character study that might surprise a few moviegoers with its depth.
SURPRISE: Joker Comes out on Top with 11 Nominations(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. TM & © DC Comics)We all knew it was going to be a good morning for Joker, with noms for Best Actor and Best Picture guaranteed, but few thought it was going to be this good. The movie won the day with 11 nominations, more than any other film, including Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Sam Mendes’ 1917, and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, which each picked up 10. Where Joker really made up its numbers was in earning nods in a number of categories where it was considered an outside chance rather than a lock: Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Director for Todd Phillips.SNUB: Jennifer Lopez and The Farewell s Shuzhen Zhao Miss Out(Photo by JA, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Be kind to J-Lo fans today, who may require the comforting warmth of a luxury fur coat after the multi-hyphenate was left off the Best Supporting Actress list – maybe the biggest single snub of this year’s Oscar nominations. Lopez was widely favored in the category for her performance as exotic dancer Ramona in Hustlers, with many pegging her as the likely winner come February. She had racked up wins all season and was mounting a killer campaign. The category was generally one of the most surprising, with The Farewell actress Shuzhen Zhao, who won hearts as Nai Nai in Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, also snubbed, and Kathy Bates and Florence Pugh, considered slight dark horses, managing to squeeze in.SURPRISE: Kathy Bates Shakes Up the Supporting Actress Noms(Photo by Claire Folger/©Warner Bros.)J-Lo’s loss is Kathy Bates’ gain. (There’s a sentence we never thought we’d be writing.) But the huge snub of Jennifer Lopez in the Best Supporting Actress race opened up the door for an outside contender, and Kathy Bates – whose performance as the title character’s mom in Richard Jewell has been widely lauded by critics – beat out other hopefuls Annette Bening (The Report), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite Is My Name), and the ladies of Parasite to take her place in the field. Interesting side note: Kathy Bates won Best Actress in 1991 and the next year handed Best Actor to Anthony Hopkins – both winning for playing different kinds of psychopaths. Could they both take out Supporting Actor this year, for very different roles?SNUB: Put Your Bets on Adam Sandler? You Just Lost Big.(Photo by A24)With Uncut Gems racing to become A24’s biggest box officer earner ever, and Adam Sandler racking up critics groups awards over the last month, you might have thought he was looking good for his first-ever Oscar nomination. How s the Artistry? Much of the series is beautiful to look at conceptually, but there s no getting around the sameness of the character design, the lack of expression in those big, soulless American-doll-style eyes, and the lifeless storytelling. Brian Lowry, CNN.com Telling the puppet characters apart sometimes proves a daunting challenge, and it s difficult to mount much enthusiasm for the task given the first episode s plodding pace. Rob Owen, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Like the original, it s an extraordinary technical achievement filled with stunning images and remarkable puppet work. And, also like the original, it won t appeal to everyone. Keith Phipps, TV Guide You can liken it to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones or any high fantasy series you like, but after ten magical hours it truly stands on its own as a gorgeous, innovative, emotional, joyous, and exceptional wonder. Allison Keene, Paste Magazine(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)How s the Storytelling? A beauty with a fully realized world which seems to know where it s going and how to get there. Verne Gay, Newsday The thrilling, moving Age of Resistance marks an impressive pushback against the age of CGI. Sara Stewart, New York Post A good reminder that the fantasy genre is about taking a step toward something unfamiliar and then letting it take you away. Hank Stuever, Washington Post An astonishing achievement that will equally delight and disturb. Matt Fowler, IGN Movies The series (which has to fill five times as much screen time as the movie) is full of padding, especially in the tedious scenes of the vain, petty Skeksis squabbling with each other. The first episode opens with three and a half minutes of solid narration (Sigourney Weaver) to explain the fairly rudimentary set-up, and there are long, unnecessary detours that seem meant to expand the world of Thra, but are mostly just easily skippable filler. Josh Bell, CBR The film established a world that was strange and mysterious, but it barely skimmed the surface of its potential in its 90-minute runtime. The Age of Resistance writers are filling that blank space in a way that feels natural rather than superfluous. They’ve invented past conflicts, expanded the roles of characters from the film, and built a nuanced social order for the Gelflings that helps explain how the Skeksis came to power and maintained their grasp on Thra for a thousand years. The writers have also created numerous minor touches that add to the character of the world, like beautiful, somber rituals for the choosing of a new Gelfling leader, and a way of mourning that still embraces the show’s central philosophy that death is a necessary, important part of life. Samantha Nelson, The Verge(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)How s The Voice Work? A few standouts in the impressively deep cast are worth mentioning here, and none more than Simon Pegg s incredible version of The Chamberlain. Fans will remember this devious opportunist from the original film, and Pegg is unrecognizably perfect taking over the role, becoming the most fascinating character in the series. Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel also brings vibrancy and light to her unintentionally corpse-looking Gelfling, Deet, with her endlessly endearing voice work. Awkafina is a riot on the other end of the spectrum as The Collector, the pus-filled, whiny Skeksis along with Mark Hamill doing what he does best in a delightfully over-the-top performance as The Scientist. Kyle Wilson, The Lamplight Review Aside from the assurance of puppetry over CGI, the biggest draw to the series? Its incredibly stacked voice cast, which includes a who’s who of sci-fi/fantasy TV and film. They rise up to the challenge, with some of them clearly having a blast recording it. (On the Skeksis side, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, and Simon Pegg are all highlights.) But in a season of television that has 180 speaking parts (many of them introduced at the same time), most of that celebrity voice cast gets a little lost in the shuffle. Michelle Jaworski, The Daily Dot(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)Final Verdict? Simultaneously acts as a gift to fans packed with Easter eggs and a powerful primer for the uninitiated. Caroline Framke, Variety It s a rare and beautiful beast that s definitively an epic TV series, as well as feeling very easy to surrender to and bury oneself between luxuriously rich storytelling and gloriously beautiful pops of color. Kimberly Ricci, Uproxx One of the most remarkable productions in TV history, and one of the best modern fantasies ever made for the small screen. Erik Kain, Forbes Whether you re watching for fulfilled nostalgia or current pleasure, this is a whimsical, fun and entertaining series. Dan Fienberg, Hollywood Reporter Ultimately, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance prequel is a more than worthy successor to Henson s 1982 masterpiece while establishing itself as a master work in its own right. There is something for everyone in this exquisite offering. Nicole Drum, ComicBook.com Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a triumph of creativity and entertainment. Chris Cummins, Den of GeekThe Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2 launches Friday, August 30 on Netflix

魔域boss版 Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Silver Surfer, and Spider-Women, and new roles for John Boyega and Ansel Elgort. This WEEK S TOP STORYINTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SUCCESS INSPIRES SPINOFF AND SEQUEL(Photo by Sony Pictures Animation)In its first weekend in domestic box office alone, Sony s innovative animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has already earned back over half of its initial million production budget. The film was always part of Sony s ambitious plans for its Marvel properties, and this week, we leaned a lot more about possible future films. Development has reportedly begun on both a sequel and a spinoff of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, although there may also be others. The sequel is described as focusing on the romance between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey, which will then lead into the spinoff Spider-Women, featuring Gwen, Silk, and the original Spider-Woman (in the comics), Jessica Drew. (Spider-Woman also had her own Saturday morning cartoon back in the late 1970s, which you can sample right here.) Former Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney, who voiced Peter Porker A.K.A. Spider-Ham, is also teasing his ideas for a Spider-Ham movie, which he compares to Spotlight (but for kids). The post-credits sequence also teased a new character voiced by Oscar Isaac (who we won t identify just yet to avoid second week spoilers). Another possibility is the MCU version played by Tom Holland, who is reportedly not off limits for a future animated film. Finally, there are still other hints and teases throughout the film as to where the Spider-Verse may someday go, as you can also see discussed at THR and here at RT.Fresh Developments1. SAOIRSE RONAN AND KATE WINSLET DIG UP AMMONITE FOSSILS(Photo by Kerry Brown/Fox Searchlight Pictures, Barry Wetcher/Warner Bros.)Kate Winslet is currently in the midst of a 10-out-of-11 Rotten streak, but perhaps this week s new project will help her right that ship, as she is now signed to star alongside Saoirse Ronan in the historical drama Ammonite. Winslet will play 19th century paleontologist and fossil hunter Mary Anning, who begins a romantic relationship with a London woman of means [Ronan] to whom she must unexpectedly play nursemaid. Mary Anning is also considered the inspiration for the tongue twister, she sells seashells by the seashore (though it s arguably an anti-science slur by 21st century standards). The film takes its title from ammonite fossils, which are generally spiral shells related to modern squids and cuttlefish. Ammonite will be the second film from British director Francis Lee, whose first film God s Own Country (Certified Fresh at 97%) was also a gay romance.2. 2018 BLACK LIST SPOTLIGHTS BIOPICS ABOUT SNAPCHAT, GAWKER, AND THE DRUDGE REPORT (Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Ever since The Black List of Unproduced Screenplays survey began in 2005, the projects selected each year have regularly included several biopic (or otherwise historical) projects of note. Movies that have actually been produced after Black List success have included American Hustle, Argo, The Founder, I Tonya, The Imitation Game, The King s Speech, and Spotlight. The 2018 Black List continues this trend, with a particular focus this year on true stories involving such online resources as Gawker (Just the Facts), The Drudge Report (Drudge), and Snapchat (in Frat Boy Genius, which was this year s top selection). The #2 project, King Richard, is another fact-based drama, as it tells the story of Richard Williams, the hard-nosed and uncompromising father of tennis prodigies turned superstars, Venus and Serena Williams. Other historical adaptations towards the top of the results include The Seventh (about Colonel Custer and the Battle of Little Bighorn), Rub Tug (which Scarlett Johansson almost starred in), and Tillman (about NFL player Pat Tillman).3. THIS WEEK IN DEL TOROS, PART 1: GUILLERMO S TERRIFIED AND SCARY MOVIES(Photo by Kerry Hayes/Universal Pictures)It was just three weeks ago that The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro revealed 15 produced screenplays that he has ready to go. This week, del Toro addressed the likelihood that he will make most of those films in an interview, sadly saying, First of all I weigh more than 300 pounds and I’m 54 so no. I can’t. There are about 20 projects and I won’t live that long. The good news is that GDT now has a production company based at Fox Searchlight, so he is in position to shepherd some of these projects for other directors. One new project in that vein is an English-language remake of the 2017 Argentinian horror/thriller film Terrified, to be directed by the same director, Demian Rugna. Terrified was set in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires where a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex-police officer investigate horrifying events and attempt to stop the evil before it spreads. Guillermo del Toro is also producing Scary Movies to Tell in the Dark, which is now scheduled for release on August 9, 2019 (up against Disney s Artemis Fowl, also adapted from a children s book series).4. THIS WEEK IN DEL TOROS, PART 2: BENICIO JOINS DORA THE EXPLORER (Photo by Jonathan Olley/Walt Disney Studios)Ever since we first heard about a live-action remake of Dora the Explorer (and especially when we first saw Isabella Moner as the character), the question has been about how much live action it would feature. Although Dora the Explorer had many human characters, her main sidekick was Boots the Monkey, and she had a talking backpack. This week, we learned that Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy, Sicario) will be voicing Swiper the Fox. Filming of Dora the Explorer actually wrapped up two weeks ago, but Swiper will indeed be a CGI animated character, so Del Toro didn t need to be on set. James Bobin (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted) is directing Dora the Explorer, which Paramount has scheduled for August 2, 2019 (up against Fox and Marvel s The New Mutants and the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs Shaw).5. ANCHORMAN, VICE DIRECTOR S DREAM MARVEL PROJECT IS SILVER SURFER (Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The idea of a live action Silver Surfer movie has been bouncing around since at least 1994, when this student short film was produced. That was also why 20th Century Fox introduced the character in 2007 s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, but that film s box office and critical reception most likely cooled any plans for a solo movie. With Disney preparing to assimilate various Fox projects (including Fantastic Four and X-Men) in the next few years, it appears that Silver Surfer may now have a chance at getting his own movie. That is, if writer/director Adam McKay gets any say in it, as the Vice director (and Ant-Man cowriter) revealed this week that it s his one dream Marvel Comics project. McKay was quoted this week as saying, I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because, visually, you could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer with the Silver Surfer. Setting aside the 40% Tomatometer score for Speed Racer, Adam McKay s Tomatometer is the more relevant statistic here. Unfortunately for him, neither Fox nor Marvel currently has a Silver Surfer project in development.6. JOHN BOYEGA MAKES A LEGAL CASE FOR A NAKED SINGULARITY It s not yet known what will become of some of the characters who debuted in Star Wars: The Force Awakens after Star Wars: Episode IX, but some of the actors appear to be seeking other work. This week, John Boyega, who plays Finn, signed to star in a legal drama A Naked Singularity, based on a 2008 novel by Sergio De La Pava. Boyega will play a public defender who begins to strain under the weight of his work and starts to question everything after he loses his first case. The screenplay is being adapted by screenwriters David Matthews (of TV s Narcos and HBO s Vinyl) and Chase Palmer (cowriter of 2017 s IT).7. BABY DRIVER S ANSEL ELGORT PRETENDS TO BE THE GREAT HIGH SCHOOL IMPOSTER (Photo by Wilson Webb/TriStar)Both of the 21 Jump Street movies starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum were relatively successful (8 million and 2 million globally), and there has been talk about a possible third female-centric film with both Tiffany Haddish and Awkwafina reportedly in consideration to star. Those movies are obviously fictional, but this week, a true story with a halfway similar premise emerged as a new film project. Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver, The Fault in Our Stars) is now attached to star in The Great High School Imposter, a true story drama based upon the GQ article of the same name. It s relevant to point out that Elgort is currently 24, as he will be playing a Ukrainian immigrant who pretends to be five years younger so he could be adopted by a childless couple in a small Pennsylvania town, all to stay in the country after a short stint in a work exchange program. Elgort also has the novel adaptation The Goldfinch (10/11/2019) and Steven Spielberg s West Side Story (in which he will star as Tony) in the works.Rotten Ideas2. BEN AFFLECK DECIDES I AM STILL ALIVE (Photo by Universal Pictures)Ben Affleck has been associated with Warner Bros. for the past several years, as it was the studio for whom he directed his Best Picture-winner Argo, played Batman in two films (including Justice League), and also starred in The Accountant and Live by Night (which he also directed, wrote, and produced). That said, he s taking his next project to Universal Pictures. Affleck will produce and star in an adaptation of I Am Still Alive, a book by Kate Alice Marshall, a wilderness survival drama about a 16-year-old girl who is sent to live with her long-lost, and off-the-grid, father in the Canadian wilderness. Meanwhile, Affleck is also currently filming (as actor and producer) a Warner Bros. sports drama about high school basketball called Torrance.1. NETFLIX REMAKING JIMMY STEWART COMEDY CLASSIC HARVEY Nearly a decade before Steven Spielberg started active work on a remake of West Side Story, he had been reported back in 2009 to be working on a remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart comedy classic Harvey, about a man with a six foot tall imaginary rabbit friend. As it often happens, Spielberg eventually moved on from the Harvey remake, but this week, we learned that just such a film is still in development, now at Netflix. Netflix has hired screenwriter J. David Stem and David N. Weiss (The Smurfs 2, Shrek 2) to adapt the 1950 film (and the play it was adapted from) in collaboration with the Mexican production company behind Netflix s and Martin Scorsese s The Irishman.
