Cate is writing on the representation of women in film; read her piece, The Bling Ring, Debbie Ocean, And Why We Can t Help But Love Cinema s Designer Thieves, here.(Photo by ©Focus Features/courtesy Everett Collection)The last 25 years have brought a slew of female action heroines to our screens. From Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde and Letty Ortiz in the Fast and Furious franchise to Lucy in Lucy and Milla Jovovich’s Leeloo in The Fifth Element, women have been steadily kicking their way to center stage in a genre that once mostly excluded them. These characters have very little in common on the surface – their story motivations don’t overlap and they come from all walks of life. But they are all connected by the way they are depicted on screen. The women are all physically strong, whizzes with weapons, or both; every one of them has a rousing “girl power” fight scene that drives home their physical prowess. The “power” is the key. Instead of becoming an expanded avenue for female characters to flourish, the action genre has become a place where female characterization often goes to die. Combat skills have become a handy shortcut for films to skimp on true character development for the women in their story. Rather than learning about these women’s inner lives or motivations, we watch with glee as they raze through scene after scene of dangerous (nearly always male) thugs, and enjoy the minor thrill of seeing them act just like one of the boys. After all, if a female character lands enough punches, it can be easy to miss that she isn’t adding much depth to the story. This lazy narrative trick has meant that instead of getting character arcs, women have just been getting bigger and better guns. But there are other possibilities, and we’re finally starting to see them onscreen.(Photo by © Marvel / courtesy Everett Collection)Female-led action films of the last five years have started showing that empathy is also an integral part of the heroic scaffolding. It’s noteworthy that by combining physical and emotional strength, films like Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Mad Max: Fury Road, demonstrate that women do not have to be emotional vacuums in order to live up to their heroic ideals. In 2019’s Captain Marvel, the title hero spends most of the film being gaslit by her mentor. After absorbing an unimaginable cosmic power and being kidnapped by the Kree, Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is turned into a weapon for the galaxy’s villains against her will, and without her memory, she doesn’t know her own power. In the film’s final confrontation, her mentor turned nemesis, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) attempts to bait her into a fistfight, but she merely blasts him off his feet instead. She has nothing to prove. Over the course of the film’s run time she has learned that her physical strength and otherworldly abilities are not what make her valuable. Her true skill is in valuing the dignity of human life and a willingness to right the wrongs of her past.(Photo by © Marvel / courtesy Everett Collection)Danvers’ narrative arc may feel unfinished to some, but what it succeeds in doing is showing that physical and emotional strength do not have to be mutually exclusive traits. As she regains her memory, Danvers must come to terms with the fact that she has been fighting on the wrong side of a colonial war, and her innate goodness is what propels her to defect to the side of the righteous. Though the story makes clear that she is possibly the singular most physically powerful being in the universe, it also takes the time to highlight that her emotions also bring her power. Her rage, love, and desire to be good make her physical power stronger and more lethal, feeding into her ability to protect the people who deserve it.What makes Captain Marvel such an interesting example of the modern action hero is that part of the villain’s plan is to get her to repress her emotional side. Danvers is outfitted with an inhibitor chip meant to suppress her powers, and she is repeatedly told that in order to master them, she must release herself from emotional complications. It’s a direct engagement with the idea that feelings make women weak or less capable, and that’s what makes it all the more satisfying when her embrace of her full emotional range allows her to access the true extent of her power.Cate YoungPatty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman similarly makes empathy a central part of its title character’s arc. Diana of Themyscira (Gal Gadot) is driven directly by her innate need to protect and defend the powerless. The very purpose of the Amazons – the powerful all-female tribe to which Diana belongs – is to protect mankind from the jealous god Ares. When fighter pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) washes up on the shores of her idyllic nation and tells the Amazons about a war that is ravaging the world, Diana feels obligated to intervene on behalf of humankind. Her purpose is to defend the helpless and ensure peace. Throughout the film, Jenkins takes great pains to display and demonstrate Diana’s empathy. The famous No Man’s Land scene shows just how strongly Diana can draw from her emotions to effect real change. In the scene, Diana faces a violent threat directly, and acts in service of her empathy for the war’s victims, defeating an enemy and saving a town. The moment is the film’s best action scene, and it works so well because the audience understands Diana’s empathetic motivations.(Photo by ©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)Later, in the movie s finale, Diana s finding the strength to defeat Ares by drawing on her love for Steve could have played out as cliché, but it falls completely in line with the actions of an empathetic hero. With her hopes dashed and her belief shattered by Ares, it makes sense that Diana’s access to love, empathy, and a true belief in righteousness would be the thing that allows her to access her true power as Zeus’s “Godkiller.”In Ares’ view, the only way to save the world is to rid it of humankind. But it is Diana’s radical empathy that allows her to see that people have a great potential for goodness, and deserve the chance to right their wrongs. This realization springs from her fundamentally different perspective on the inherent nature of people. People have the ability to be good or bad, but she chose to believe that given the chance, they would turn towards goodness. It’s a belief that’s rooted not just in the lore of Wonder Woman herself, but in the idea that people are not disposable. Wonder Woman was an excellent example of what a hero can be capable of when they access their full emotional capacity. (Photo by ©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection)In Mad Max: Fury Road, Imperator Furiosa’s (Charlize Theron) motivation is rooted in her empathy for Immortan Joe’s five wives. The film also tackles larger themes of environmental pillage and economic scarcity. Furiosa’s decision to steal the women away and bring them to what she believes is a land of plenty, is a firm outgrowth of her understanding of the need for human dignity. Before the events of the film’s central conflict, Furiosa is a valued servant in Immortan’s vast empire, in good standing with his stifling world order. But the clear injustice of his treatment of not just women, but the very earth he stands on, prompts her to act. Furiousa risks her life and Immortan’s wrath by leaving with his prized “broodmares,” but the danger she chooses to face is a direct reflection of her rejection of his world view. In this barren hellscape, women exist to be pumped for milk or to give birth to heirs. But Furiosa remembers a time when resources were plentiful and women were ushers of new life instead of prisoners to its arrival.(Photo by ©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection)Her quest to save the Wives is an act born out of revenge, but also a sincerely generous and selfless impulse. There is nothing that the Wives can give her. Their presence is functionally a burden on her ability to survive. But she saves them anyway, because they are slaves to Immortan’s whims and she knows that no one deserves to be treated like an object or plaything. In turn, the Wives reflect this impulse over the course of their journey with her, saving the life of a War Boy, and protecting Furiosa from Immortan’s bullets when he begins his pursuit. The Vuvalini, or Many Mothers, who meet up with Furiosa and the Wives in the Green Place, are a group of mostly older women who guard the few remaining seeds with the potential for growth. Instead of a vibrant, flowering paradise, Furiosa finds that the utopia she had hoped to share with the Wives has been decimated by Immortan’s far-reaching neglect – the land of plenty is no more.(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection)Rather than stealing away with this new team of female survivors, Furiosa turns them around and heads back to the Citadel, the very place from which they escaped.. With Immortan distracted, she retakes his fortress, freeing not just the Wives, but all the other people left starving and mistreated by his hoarding of resources. This eventual revolution would never have happened if not for Furiosa’s brave actions and her desire to seek revenge on Immortan Joe. Without the calculated risks she took and the help of the newly freed Wives and noble Vuvalini, the wasteland they called home would have remained under the iron fist of a dictator. A simple empathetic impulse – to save the Wives from sexual bondage – led to the freedom of an entire society. Furiosa has no super powers or special abilities, but her empathy influenced her actions, and her actions liberated a city.(Photo by ©Netflix / Courtesy: Everett Collection)Furiosa, Diana, and Carol’s empathetic strength may make them compelling, even iconic action heroines, but they’re complexity is not the norm in Hollywood. Actress and filmmaker Brit Marling succinctly explained the problem of female “strength” in film in a New York Times op-ed earlier this year: “It would be hard to deny that there is nutrition to be drawn from any narrative that gives women agency and voice in a world where they are most often without both. But the more I acted the Strong Female Lead, the more I became aware of the narrow specificity of the characters’ strengths – physical prowess, linear ambition, focused rationality. Masculine modalities of power. [ ] Because what we really mean when we say we want strong female leads is: Give me a man but in the body of a woman I still want to see naked.' (Photo by ©TriStar Pictures/ Courtesy: Everett Collection)There’s nothing wrong with female characters being physically strong. Some of the most iconic women of cinema are iconic specifically because they were allowed to be physically strong when women’s strength was a novelty. Characters like Terminator 2’s Sarah Connor, G.I. Jane’s Jordan O’Neil, Underworld’s Selene, Kill Bill’s Bride, and Resident Evil’s Alice broke boundaries by showing that women could be more than the damsel in distress. But the tendency to ignore the real value of more traditionally feminine modes of power means that we effectively erase them from existence. When our cultural scripts equate strength with brawn, we ignore the important ways emotional intelligence and empathy play a role in how we interact with each other. Movies are their own kind of cultural record, and it’s important to inscribe women’s emotion into our history. The action hero is a perfect opportunity to do just that.

As television milestones go, it’s tough to top being on the air not just for a period of years but a period of decades. On December 17, Matt Groening’s deathless satirical masterpiece will achieve the remarkable feat of being on the air for three decades. Three decades! Thirty years! That’s real good. The Simpsons has helped define the comic sensibility of multiple generations of irreverent, pop-culture savvy smart-asses. Its run was first ground-breaking in its eviscerating and dark yet emotionally grounded look at the greed and cynicism at the heart of American society, and then record-breaking in the show’s unprecedented commercial success and staggering longevity. These 30 essential episodes of the preeminent American pop-culture institution illustrate the comedic perfection of the show during its glorious, radiant prime, and then the long, slow, inevitable slide in quality and relevance that followed. But it s worth noting that while we may not be in the Golden Age, the series still does hit hard – and funny – on occasion, so you will find some more recent eps in this list.Let us know your favorite Simpsons episodes in the comments.1. Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire in The Simpsons: Season 1 (1989) 100%You never forget your first time! Accordingly, The Simpsons opened on a painfully relatable note of paralyzing Yuletide economic uncertainty with a special Christmas episode that finds Homer desperate to provide a merry Christmas for his family after being denied a holiday bonus. “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” goes to audaciously dark places for the introductory episode of a cartoon pitched at families. It climaxes with Homer going with his son and alcoholic friend Barney to the racetrack, where he gambles away his money, yet still manages to deliver the requisite happy, or at least bittersweet, ending. From the very beginning, The Simpsons wasn’t just very funny. It was also emotionally real and grounded.2. Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish in The Simpsons: Season 2 (1990) 100%Classic episodes like “Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish” helped establish sinister arch-capitalist and power plant owner Montgomery Burns as a standout supporting player of tremendous depth and surprising complexity. He’s a figure of biblical, almost Satanic evil but also an oddly sympathetic figure when his God-like status is threatened. Burns is poignantly, unexpectedly human here after the discovery of a three-eyed mutated fish causes a government crackdown on the power plant and inspires the evil mogul to run for governor to protect his interests.3. Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington in The Simpsons: Season 3 (1991) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)“Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington” adroitly typecasts Lisa as its pure-hearted Mr. Smith surrogate in a savagely satirical evisceration of political corruption, patriotic hokum, and the terminally mild song stylings of Mark Russell. As the show’s unyielding paragon of integrity, Lisa is a natural choice to earnestly inhabit the well-worn archetype of the idealistic innocent who uncovers the seedy underbelly of American politics. Lisa is an inherently political little muckraker and “Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington” ranks amongst her finest half hours.4. Homer at the Bat in The Simpsons: Season 3 (1991) 100%If you were a sports fan at the time, “Homer at the Bat” was no mere television episode: It was a seismic cultural event that brought together the best in entertainment and sports in a riotous riff on The Natural. In “Homer at the Bat,” a magic bat transforms Homer into a dinger-smacking dynamo before Mr. Burns hires a team of major league ringers to help him win a million-dollar bet on a company softball game with a fellow mogul. You don’t need to be a baseball fan to find “Homer at the Bat” hilarious, but it does help.5. A Streetcar Named Marge in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%The perpetually long-suffering Marge gets an opportunity to not only express but sing her pain when she’s cast as Blanche Du Bois opposite a disconcertingly shredded Ned Flanders in a musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire that replaces the tragic melodrama of the original with something peppier and more upbeat. Marge’s onstage drama mirrors her offstage frustrations, which lends the episode surprising emotional weight.6. Marge vs. The Monorail in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Before he rose to talk show fame, Conan O’Brien wrote his way into The Simpsons history with “Marge Vs. The Monorail.” It’s an instant classic parody of The Music Man with Phil Hartman perfectly cast as its Harold Hill figure, a charismatic flim-flam man with a song on his lips and a scam in his heart who bamboozles the gullible people of Springfield into buying a monorail that causes the problems he promises it will solve.7. I Love Lisa in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%It’s impossible not to feel poor Ralph Wiggum’s precocious romantic heartbreak when Lisa Simpson humiliates him after he publicly professes his love for her in this painfully hilarious and just plain painful exploration of puppy love gone awry. Watch closely and you can pinpoint the exact moment “I Love Lisa” rips the audience’s heart in half. Who knew Lisa could be such a heartbreaker and Ralph such a convincing tragic romantic hero?8. Last Exit to Springfield in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%To fans of classic The Simpsons, the words “Lisa needs braces” must always be answered with “Dental plan?” and vice versa thanks to “Last Exit to Springfield. The episode pitted a deeply overmatched Homer against Mr. Burns in a labor-versus-owner skirmish that develops unexpectedly high, personal stakes that sees Homer’s dim-wittedness facing off against his family and co-workers’ needs.9. Krusty Gets Kancelled in The Simpsons: Season 4 (1992) 100%The stars REALLY come for poor Krusty after his place in children’s hearts is taken by sadistic dummy Gabbo. “Krusty Gets Kancelled” would make it into the pantheon of all-time great episodes on the basis of a guest voice roster that includes Johnny Carson, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers alone, but it offers an embarrassment of riches even without a ridiculously stacked guest lineup.10. Cape Feare in The Simpsons: Season 5 (1993) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Kelsey Grammer’s sonorously duplicitous sidekick-turned-serial attempted murderer, Sideshow Bob, proved himself a worthy antagonist to Bart Simpson by slipping into the role of a vengeance-crazed ex-con in a Cape Fear spoof that contains the legendary sequence where the frustrated clown steps on a rake nine times – a gag that’s funny, then unfunny, then brutal, then hilarious all over again.11. Rosebud in The Simpsons: Season 5 (1993) 100%The Simpsons’ famous love for Citizen Kane, and pop culture pastiche in general. reaches a glorious crescendo with “Rosebud, which re-imagines Charles Foster Kane’s iconic nostalgia for the sled of his youth as miserly Mr. Burns similarly pining for a clumsily symbolic totem of childhood innocence, a ratty teddy bear that Maggie comes to own. “Rosebud” humanized a monster by exposing the child within.12. Itchy and Scratchy Land in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100%When FOX tried to appease censors by eliminating Itchy Scratchy, a duo that exists for the sake of gratuitous violence, The Simpsons impishly protested with the most uncompromisingly brutal Itchy Scratchy episode of all time. “Itchy and Scratchy Land” ratcheted the bloodshed up to hyperbolic and hilarious levels in a gut-buster that riffs merrily on Disney Land, Westworld, and Jurassic Park.13. Treehouse of Horror V in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100%(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The Treehouse of Horror, The Simpsons’ beloved annual Halloween ramble through treasured terror tales past, was never darker or more hilarious than in this fifth entry that focused on adults murderously terrorizing children. First Homer convincingly inhabits the murderous mind of Jack Torrance in a non legally-actionable parody of The Shining called “The Shinning.” Then Homer ruins things for civilization by futzing around with the timeline before a final segment finds teachers and lunch ladies enjoying a new “miracle meat” made of students that gives a deliciously literal meaning to “Eat my shorts.”14. Who Shot Mr Burns? Parts 1 and 2 in The Simpsons: Season 6 (1994) 100% and The Simpsons: Season 7 (1995) 100%The Simpsons delved into the pulse-pounding world of cliffhangers with “Who Shot Mr. Burns?”, a high-profile, much buzzed-about two-part parody of Dallas’ 1980 ratings bonanza “Who Shot J.R?”. Like the earlier pop-culture phenomenon, “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” focused on the shooting of a mogul so cartoonishly evil that just about anyone with a pulse who has interacted with them has reason to wish them dead.

You asked for it, and now it’s here. After all the fan campaigning and all the reshoots, the “Snyder Cut” of Justice League arrives on HBO Max this Friday, March 18. And while it’s not expected to officially change the direction of the DC Extended Universe at all, if the public reception is as positive as the first reviews of this director’s cut, then it’s likely to influence the franchise forever. According to experts, the new version of the 2017 superhero team-up is not just a lot bigger, but a lot better, too. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth phase is an eclectic mix of supporting characters leading their own television shows and some genuinely unexpected characters debuting in their own films. And even though Guardians of the Galaxy should prove the studio can make stars out of any obscure Marvel hero, some may still be scratching their heads about September’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. With a teaser trailer finally out, some may understand why Marvel fans are excited. But if you need further clarification, let’s take a look at everything we know about the film to suss out why Shang-Chi’s introduction to the MCU is highly anticipated.Master Of Kung Fu(Photo by Jim Cheung/Marvel Comics)Created by writer Steve Englehart and artist Jim Starlin in 1972, the character was part of wave of martial arts heroes both of the Big Two comic book publishers introduced as they themselves became aware of the martial arts films playing in New York theaters at the time. But in Shang-Chi’s case, the story is more involved, as Marvel was looking to publish a series based on the popular Kung Fu series. That program, owned by what was then called Warner Communications, was itself allegedly based on a concept from legendary martial arts film star Bruce Lee – although the origin of Kung Fu, which starred David Carradine as a half-Chinese monk roaming the Old West, is a subject of much debate. One thing seems clear, though: Lee was considered for the lead role but rejected because the television networks believed viewers would never watch a Chinese actor as the star.Unable to secure the deal, Marvel turned around and acquired the rights to author Sax Rohmer’s pulp novel villain Fu Manchu and tasked Englehart and Starlin with creating a new main character, Shang-Chi, to play the protagonist in the struggle with the villain. As it happens, the two would also turn out to be father and son.Debuting in 1973’s Special Marvel Edition #15, he would take over the title completely when it was renamed The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu two issues later. Other than Shang-Chi, much of the book’s cast was comprised of established characters from Rohmer’s novels. The series ran until issue #125 in 1983. He would continue to appear in crossovers, one-shots, team-up books like Agents of Atlas, and miniseries across the years. A special “Issue #126” of the original series was released in 2017.Sometime after 1983, though, Marvel’s deal to use Fu Manchu expired. As a character wholly owned by Marvel, Shang-Chi’s origins began to morph. Members of his family were renamed and re-imagined while other Rohmer characters simply disappeared from the Marvel Universe.Nevertheless, there are two important takeaways from Shang-Chi’s comic book history: he is a proven success, and his origins were always ripe for a feature film. He is born of the martial arts film tradition, after all. Also, keep his father in mind. That’s going to matter later. The Winding Road To A Feature(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Shang-Chi’s prospects in film reach back as far as the 1980s, when Stan Lee reached out to Bruce Lee’s widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and son, Brandon Lee, about the latter potentially starring in a Shang-Chi film or TV series. Sadly, the younger Lee’s life was cut short on the set of The Crow in 1993. In 2001, Blade director Steven Norrington was signed to direct The Hands of Shang-Chi, but was replaced by martial legends Yuen Woo-ping when the project moved to Dreamworks in 2003. A year later, the rights reverted to Marvel Entertainment and held in reserve for the newly formed Marvel Studios. In 2005, it was listed among 10 potential films the studio would produce for Paramount. Then the Infinity Saga happened, delaying films like Shang-Chi and Ant-Man far beyond the initial slate. In 2018, Marvel Studios fast-tracked the project because it wanted to feature an Asian lead after the success of both Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians. David Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984) quickly signed on to write the feature and Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy) emerged as director in March of 2019. Throughout this phase of development, Marvel kept seeding the message that it wanted Shang-Chi to play in a similar fashion to Black Panther: an Asian (or Asian-American) viewpoint on the Marvel superhero modernizing some of the more dated or stereotypical elements of the character s 1970s run. Other key crew behind the camera include director of photography Bill Pope (The Matrix, Spider-Man 2), production designer Sue Chan (Colossal), and editor Harry Yoon (Minari).Production was slated to begin in February of 2020, and though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed things slightly, shooting was completed on October 24th of that year. The Cast And Story Of Shang-ChiRyan FujitaniSimu Liu (Kim s Convenience) will make his Marvel debut as Shang-Chi, and from the teaser, we discover he is the son of Wenwu (Tony Leung), a man who has given his child 10 years to “live his life” in San Francisco. Among his friends are Katy (Awkwafina), a hotel porter unaware of his training or life with Wenwu, and Jon Jon (Ronny Chieng). Of course, from the bus attack glimpsed in the preview, they are about to learn that Shang-Chi is a very skilled martial artist and scion of the Ten Rings organization. The group will go on a journey as Wenwu’s attempts to bring his son back into the fold intensify. Also, according to some rumors, the “Ten Rings” of the title may be alien artifacts Wenwu uses to maintain control of the Ten Rings group known to people like Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).Other cast members include Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan – her second MCU character after Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  Fala Chen as Jiang Li, and Meng er Zhang as Shang-Chi s sister Xialing. Dallas Liu will also appear in an undisclosed role. The MCU Connections(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Pictures)Of course, one of the most intriguing elements of Shang-Chi is the update to his famous parentage. Instead of Fu Manchu, a character steeped in “yellow peril” stereotypes, Wenwu takes his cues from Marvel Comics villain the Mandarin – a character long-teased in the Iron Man film series. While such a revelation would normally be a spoiler, Marvel was surprisingly open about Leung playing The Mandarin when he was first announced for the film in 2019. Our guess here, supported by the teaser: the film is less about Shang-Chi discovering the truth about his father than it is him coming to grips with what the Mandarin and the Ten Rings really mean for him and the world at large. If you’ll recall, the Ten Rings were introduced in the first Iron Man they were the group responsible for Tony Stark’s capture in the desert. He eventually made the Mark I Iron Man suit and escaped. Much of the subsequent film saw Tony dismantling their operations in the Middle East. They would also aid Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) in Iron Man 2.The Mandarin himself seemingly surfaced in Iron Man 3 as part of new terror campaign. It eventually turned out that “The Mandarin” was a struggling British actor named Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) and that the plot was orchestrated by Killian Aldrich (Guy Pearce) to cover up his own failed experiments. Subsequently, Slattery was abducted from his prison block by real Ten Rings agents, as seen in the Marvel One-Shot short “All Hail the King” on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray release.Ryan FujitaniAnd for many, finally seeing the Mandarin and the Ten Rings in full form is worth the price of admission alone. But tying Shang-Chi to the character also opens up a lot of new avenues for conflict and pathos. According to Cretton, the dangling element of Shang-Chi’s father – in the comics, an immortal villain called Zheng Zu replaced Fu Manchu allowed him to reimagine the Mandarin as a much more complex and layered character than typically seen during his heyday in the pages of Iron Man.In fact, we’ll go out on a limb and suggest it took all this time to get the Mandarin on screen because he can easily become a stereotype himself. But he’s not the only Marvel character debuting in the film. As seen in the teaser, Shang-Chi will face Razor Fist (Florian Munteanu) during that bus attack. The character is something of a Marvel martial arts mainstay, first appearing in a 1975 issue of the Shang-Chi comic, then called Master of Kung Fu, as an assassin with blades for hands. A subsequent set of characters – twins who both lost a hand in a car accident and replaced them with blades – adopted the name. No matter who currently holds the Razor Fist title, it is their destiny to fight with Shang-Chi, although it usually happens because someone pays them to do so. It is unclear if this is the case with the movie’s Razor Fist, though. He may merely be a test of Shang-Chi’s skills as Wenwu prepares to call him home.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Additionally, the teaser features a very brief glimpse of Death Dealer. The character, a later addition to Shang-Chi in 1982, was an agent of Fu Manchu embedded within MI:6. When his true loyalty came to light, the supervillain anointed him with a new costume. Like Razor Fist, he may just be another one of the bold opponents Shang-Chi will face as his journey takes him from San Francisco to other spots on the globe. But considering Death Dealer’s distinctive mask, it’s hard not to imagine he will become the key antagonist as Shang-Chi and Wenwu’s relationship changes. The Shifting Release DateOriginally set to debut on February 12, 2021, Disney first moved it to May 7 as the pandemic began a cascade effect of delays. It then moved again to July 9 as part of a further shift of release dates, and just when things seemed to settle, Black Widow took the July 9 date. As of now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set for release on September 3, 2021.Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens on September 3, 2021.On an Apple device? This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as One-Punch Man, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This WEEK S TOP STORYSONY DELAYS SPIDER-MAN AND VENOM SEQUELS, MOVES UP UNCHARTED(Photo by ©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This week saw a number of release date changes for some of Sony s biggest titles, beginning with the Venom sequel, starring Tom Hardy as the titular anti-hero and Woody Harrelson as (presumably) the crimson red serial killer Carnage. That movie had been scheduled for October 2, 2020, but Venom 2 became Venom: Let There Be Carnage as it got bumped back eight months to next summer on June 25, 2021 (taking the spot where The Batman previously was to have been released). Sony Pictures also quickly took advantage of the announcement to Tweet out a brief teaser of the new title. Then, late on Friday, Sony further announced that its third Spider-Man film featuring the MCU s Tom Holland, which was set to open on July 16, 2021, will be pushed back four months to November 5, the release date of Marvel s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was itself then also pushed back to March 5, 2022. Remember that domino effect we were talking about? Holland s other big film, the video game adaptation Uncharted, was then moved forward from October 8, 2021 to replace the untitled Spider-Man sequel in the now-vacant July 16 slot. To top it all off, the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which had been planned for April 8, 2022, was also pushed back six months to October 7 of the same year. Whew!Other Top Headlines1. WARNER BROS. DELAYS THE RELEASES OF THE BATMAN AND SHAZAM 2 (Photo by Matt Reeves)Some of the movies originally scheduled for the summer of 2020 have been pushed back because of COVID-19, which has resulted in a domino effect, with their delays leading to delays in other films. In some cases, the movies scheduled for next year that were supposed to be filming right now need that much more extra time to get filmed, get through post-production, and get released. Few movies need quite as much time as supehero movies do, so it was probably always inevitable that Warner Bros. would have to push some of their 2021 and 2022 DC Comics movies back a bit. The biggest film being delayed is The Batman, from 6/25/2021 to October 1, 2021. Shazam! 2 was to have been released on April 1, 2022, but is now scheduled for November 4, 2022. Another studio that delayed two of their big franchise movies is Paramount Pictures, which has delayed Mission: Impossible 7 from 7/23/2021 to 11/19/2021 and Mission: Impossible 8 from 8/5/2022 to 11/4/2022, which is a curious move because it means they just put their big Tom Cruise action movie right up against the Shazam! sequel that also just moved.2. ARE YOU READY FOR (MORE) SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK? (Photo by CBS Films)Lionsgate probably did not have as big of box office success with last year s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Certified Fresh at 78%) (5 million worldwide) as they might have hoped, but the PG-13 horror film was also produced relatively cheaply ( million), and it s also one that should have a good shelf life, since it can be revived every Halloween for a new generation of kids. That is presumably part of why Paramount Pictures (taking over from CBS Films) felt confident enough with the possible new franchise as they have pulled the trigger on a sequel by hiring the same director and writers. Director André Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and writers Dan and Kevin Hageman can now spend their COVID-19 stay-at-home time working on a new set of stories from Alvin Schwartz s original anthology books for the next movie. Which stories from the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books do you think should be adapted for the second movie?3. A HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL IS IN THE WORKS(Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)Before Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace came out over 20 years ago, there was a time when people were perhaps more optimistic about a popular franchise going back a generation to tell a prequel story about the franchise s big bad villain. Now, people look back at the Star Wars prequels and many think three movies about the young Darth Vader were maybe not a great deal, but hey, another popular franchise would never make the same mistake, right? Tell that to the people who mad The Hunger Games, because author Suzanne Collins has written an upcoming novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (5/19/2020) about the future villain Coriolanus Snow when he was a young 18-year-old man. Lionsgate has quickly picked up the rights to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which will again be directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed all of the Hunger Games movies except the first one. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes tells the story of young Coriolanus Snow, who is frustrated when he discovers he has been assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12 (the same district that Jennifer Lawrence s Katniss Everdeen will also eventually come from).4. POPULAR ANIME FRANCHISE ONE-PUNCH MAN GETS LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION(Photo by Viz Media)Although last year s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was usually credited as being a success for video game movies, the argumennt could also be made that it was just as much an adaptation of anime and manga, which is another type of live-action adaptation that has mostly struggled in Hollywood to date. As with most of these situations, it s inevitably just a matter of time before someone in the industry figures out the right project, which then becomes a big enough success that it opens the gates for others. Sony Pictures is gambling that perhaps the popular anime series One-Punch Man could be exactly that, as they are now developing a live-action One-Punch Man movie, which will be adapted for the big screen by Venom screenwriters Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. One-Punch Man tells the continuing adventures of a superhero called Saitama who has perfected his fighting abilities to the point where he can literally defeat any opponent with just one punch, but that overwhelming power has also left him bored with his life.
(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)After a very dark and financially difficult period during the 1980s, Walt Disney Animation Studios went through what we know now as The Disney Renaissance, a decade full of critically and commercially successful animated films that changed our perception of not only what Disney films could do, but what animation itself could accomplish. With powerhouse musical numbers, moving stories, and innovations in the medium, Disney pumped out unforgettable movies for most of the decade. While everyone remembers The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and Aladdin – and if they forgot them, the live-action remakes have surely jogged memories – there is one film that came out during this period that is as good as, if not better than, some of the big guns, but is seldom considered part of the Renaissance itself: A Goofy Movie.Featuring a small-scale story that kids can see themselves in, an excellent portrayal of teenage life and father-son relationships, and, crucially, a soundtrack filled with earworms to rival the work of Rice and Menken, the movie has something for everyone. For its 25th anniversary, we’re going to stand above the crowd and shout out loud why A Goofy Movie deserves to be considered one of the big players in the Disney Renaissance.ITS SMALL-SCALE STORY IS A REFRESHING CHANGE AND MOVING AS HELL(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Released in April of 1995, A Goofy Movie arrived on the back of several high-concept movies like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast, the latter of which earned an Oscar nom for Best Picture. Compared to the Shakespearean tale of a lion cub having to fight to regain his crown or the fantastical story of a genie in a bottle granting wishes, or pretty MUCH everything about Beauty and the Beast, Goofy’s story was decidedly low-key: A single dad plans a fishing trip to connect with the teenage son who’s drifting away from him.A Goofy Movie doesn’t have a villain with grand designs to rule Pride Rock/Agrabah/the Ocean. Indeed, the film stays focused pretty much on Goofy (Bill Farmer) and his son Max (Jason Marsden, with Aaron Lohr as his singing voice) as they take a road trip just like they used to when Max was a kid. There is no outside force trying to ruin their lives or even their trip. Instead, the emotional weight of the movie lies in the fleeting relationship between father and son – the former who wants his son to remain a young kid while his son wants nothing more than to be treated as a young man. The tears you’ll feel by the end are enough evidence you don’t need an epic stampede to craft a beautiful and moving tale.IT DARED TO BE CONTEMPORARY BOTH IN STYLE AND IN MUSIC(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Where the vast majority of Disney animated films at the time were either period pieces or set in fantasy worlds, A Goofy Movie is the rare film that looks and feels of its time. Even if it features anthropomorphic dogs, the film screams ’90s, with characters wearing ripped jeans and cropped tops; as Austin Williams wrote for Vice, Max’s look is undeniably hip-hop, with an oversized hoody that “might as well have read ‘Hilfiger’ across the front.” The ’90s feel extends not only to the look, but the sound of the film. The soundtrack for A Goofy Movie mirrors the push and pull of Max and Goofy’s relationship: the songs that Goofy takes part feel more like traditional Disney; the songs Max is interested in are all about R B. On the Goofy-led side, Jack Feldman and Tom Snow wrote and composed “On the Open Road,” which includes a vocal ensemble and skews folk, and “Nobody Else But You,” the duet ballad that serves as the movie’s emotional crux and is the closest to the Broadway-heavy soundtracks of other Disney Renaissance movies. But what makes A Goofy Movie feel memorably of its time are the other two songs in the movie, the tunes that are used to show Max becoming his own man and which are entirely rooted in the mid-’90s. Right after the High School Musical-meets-Grease number “After Today,” which gives a ’90s rock musical feel to Disney’s usual “protagonist walks through town as everyone joins in song” number, comes the bombastic, moonwalk-dancing pop power anthem that is “Stand Out.”This is even reflected in the use of two (well three if you count “Lester’s Possum Park”) teams working on the score: Feldman and Snow writing for Max and Goof, and the team writing for the actual star of the film: Powerline.IT GAVE US AN ANIMATED SUPERSTAR AND A FINALE WE CAN T FORGET(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)The first time we see the character of Powerline, he comes in the form of a cardboard cutout in a record store: a Michael Jackson-meets-Prince-meets-Bobby Brown figure with a three-line fade and an otherworldly space suit who’s meant to be the biggest star in the world of the film. Even though we only meet the real thing towards the end of the film, seeing Max moonwalking his way through the school’s auditorium while lip-syncing “Stand Out” as his classmates lose their minds tells us everything we need to know about the singer.According to Vice, when Disney set out to make A Goofy Movie, they had intended to cast Bobby Brown in the role of Powerline, which makes complete sense: After the success of “My Prerogative” and Ghostbusters II hit “On Our Own,” Brown was at the height of his career when the film was in development. But by the time the film’s production was coming to an end, Brown’s drug and alcohol problems led to the singer being replaced by a relatively less known Tevin Campbell.Campbell had already risen in popularity rather quickly. His debut album was produced by Prince and Quincy Jones, and it became certified platinum in 1994. Campbell had also appeared in Prince’s sequel to Purple Rain, as well as an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but it was with A Goofy Movie that the world was gifted the unique blend of R B sensibility and teenage appeal. Speaking with Forbes, Campbell recalls seeing the songs already written out before he was cast. “I did some dance moves at the green screen,” he said, though he doubts that they based Powerline’s dance moves off of him. Powerline’s songs were written and composed by Roy Freeland and Patrick DeRemer, and produced by David Z, who also engineered Prince’s “Purple Rain.”(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)When we finally see Powerline on screen, he radiates swagger. In the film’s most bombastic, balls-to-the-wall music number, which sees Goofy and Max on stage with Powerline and using Goofy’s fishing moves as dance moves, the incredibly catchy hook of “I 2 I” sneaks itself into your brain and carves a nest there. And for many, it’s stayed there for 25 years. The melody sounds straight out of a power anthem from the late-’80s to mid-’90s, the lyrics are empowering, and paired with the stadium-filling stage show that Disney’s animators create, it makes for a thrilling climax. And one with emotional payoff: father and son are finally dancing to the same tune. The concert may not have the gravitas of a beast poetically returning to human form, or a new cub being foisted into the African sky, but for many Disney fans it packs almost as much punch. And it is just one of the reasons A Goofy Movie may be the strangest thing Disney put into theaters during its 1990s Renaissance, but also one of its best.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Disney+ (subscription), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own)A Goofie Movie was released on April 7, 1995.

Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens arrives this weekend, bringing both heaven and hell with it. Based on 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the Amazon Prime limited series tells the story of agents of God and Satan who want to stop the Apocalypse — simply because it sounds like a terrible idea. Fortunately, it seems like the reluctant Antichrist has similar inclinations.Michael Sheen (The Queen) plays angel Aziraphale, and David Tennant (Broadchurch) is demon Crowley. The two first met when Crowley turned into a snake and slipped past Aziraphale into the Garden of Eden to tempt Eve. Theirs has been a fine bromance ever since.Rotten Tomatoes met up with the stars, Gaiman, director Douglas MacKinnon (Doctor Who), and, representing Terry Pratchett’s estate, executive producer Rob Wilkins, ahead of the series’ London premiere to find out just what makes the Amazon Studios and BBC Studios co-production Good Omens such a delicious binge-watching option.1. A Monty Python NonsensibilityStarting out the gate with the credit sequence, the series pays homage to Monty Python. But while in sketch series Monty Python s Flying Circus, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, Agnus Nutter actually does expect the Spanish Inquisition when her time of judgment arrives.2. The Celestial Bromance at Its Core(Photo by Amazon Studios)Aziraphale and Crowley build their lovingly adversarial relationship one historical clash after another – including, during another nod to Monty Python, when Crowley turns up as the Black Knight. Sketches of Aziraphale and Crowley’s bond strengthening over the ages are pure joy and recommend further adventures of the collegial duo. And Welsh actor Sheen and Scottish actor Tennant spark onscreen in a way that critics have hailed.“Most of the show s charm hinges on the unlikely camaraderie between an Angel and a Demon, played, with considerable gusto, by Michael Sheen and David Tennant,” CNN’s Brian Lowry wrote.New York Magazine’s Keith Phipps wrote, “Good Omens can work only with the right leads, so cheers to bringing in Sheen and Tennant, two actors who know how to make a three-course meal out of understated dialogue and cosmic absurdity.”And, from Allison Shoemaker of RogerEbert.com: “Together, it s like watching two musicians at the top of their game play a duet; they positively sing.”In a press conference before meeting with reporters, Tennant explained the relationship further.“They re not particularly good representatives of their respective head offices. They ve rubbed off on each other, so much, that Crowley s not that mean anymore, and Aziraphale s not that holy,” he said. “So, between them, they ve reached a common ground, and they ve become each other s, sort of, significant other, really They ve only got each other to rely on, and they ve become — although they would deny it until the end of time, quite literally, they re sort of each other s yin and yang … But, it s only when you see what head office is like — for instance, when the angel, Gabriel, appears — that you realize how humanized they ve become by the mortal world, that they really like, quite a lot because it s got wine.”3. The Obscene Wealth of Talent(Photo by Scott Garfitt/BACKGRID)Sheen and Tennant are just the start. The rest of the cast fills out with an enviable assemblage of talent for serialized entertainment:Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Archangel Gabriel, who leads the angelic hostAnna Maxwell Martin (The Bletchley Circle) as Beelzebub, leader of the forces of HellJosie Lawrence (Enchanted April) as 17th-century witch Agnes Nutter, who produces the only accurate book of prophecies ever writtenAdria Arjona (True Detective) as Anathema Device, a witch and Agnes Nutter’s descendantMiranda Richardson (Harry Potter franchise) as part-time medium and prostitute Madame TracyMichael McKean (This Is Spinal Tap) as Witchfinder Sergeant ShadwellFrances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) voices GodBenedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit film franchise) voices SatanSam Taylor Buck as reluctant Antichrist Adam YoungThe series, a coproduction of Amazon Studios and BBC Studios, is directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Doctor Who) and also features Jack Whitehall, Mireille Enos, Brian Cox, Nick Offerman, Ned Dennehy, Ariyon Bakare, Nina Sosanya, Steve Pemberton, and Mark Gatiss.4. Expertly Drawn Characters(Photo by Amazon Studios)The series’ stars raved about bringing Gaiman and Pratchett’s characters to life.“Nothing is odd about this character; I think she s entirely relatable. Particularly, the channeling of many, many souls, alive and dead, and riding a motorbike, in a cape, with a former member of Spinal Tap. It s just part of the day job, really,” Richardson related in a press conference before breaking off to meet with reporters. “It feels like my element. I love it. Transformation and costume and inhabiting of other, but at the same time, the character is, all the characters are, incredibly humane. I just I love that about this project. That s what comes across, I think. And what will book fans think, especially given changes like Archangel Gabriel’s expanded role?“I think had we gone into this project without Neil,” Hamm said, “there would have been a different reaction, but because Neil was involved from the get-go and was so involved during the process of making it, it became like a version 2.0. So I think the fan base was jazzed, they were like, Oh my God, we re getting more, we re almost getting a sequel or something, we re getting the extended version, the EP. … We were at New York Comic Con and there were 5,000 people that showed up for a panel discussion. It was bonkers. It was like a rock concert. It didn t hurt that we had Doctor Who on stage. It was still pretty cool and that was when I was like, Oh yeah there are way more people that are just as excited about this as I am. Worldwide, it s been published in 70 languages.”5. A Story With Heart(Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage)Good Omens has a lot of heart. That’s baked into the series by Gaiman, the stars attest.“The writing is absolutely promoting humanity,” Richardson said. “You know, it s very affirmative and optimistic, really, isn t it?”“[Neil is] very centered,” she continued. “He knows what he thinks about everything. That doesn t mean he s not open. He is completely open. So you ask him a question, and it s really considered. It s not, You don t need to worry about that. It s this is just what s happened, or I think you should try that, or whatever it is. You know, everything is very considered. It s great.”Lawrence: “He has time for you, which is wonderful.”Richardson: “Like having Daddy on set.”Lawrence: “Yes, it is, or a beautiful angel.”Hamm also noted that Gaiman brings something different to the process of creating a series.“What Neil really brings to everything he does is the capacity for storytelling,” Hamm said, “and that s first and foremost. Also I think some people in the more traditional Hollywood aspect, they re trying to make money. They re making product, whether it s a Marvel movie or what have you franchise, they re not necessarily concerned with storytelling. They re concerned with IP, or what s it going to be on the second weekend or what s the third movie going to be at franchise – Neil just wants to tell a story. That s how he s created this career that s been so wide-ranging, and I think you re going to see a lot more Neil Gaiman stuff get filmed because the stories are so compelling.”6. The Antichrist Has Never Been More EnchantingAntichrist Adam Young has the wide-eyed English-schoolboy charm of classic heroes like Mark Lester’s 1968 Oliver or any number of Nicholas Nicklebys throughout the cinematic age – until, of course, the boy inherits his powers. Aziraphale and Crowley’s attempts to manage the situation are akin to trying to stop a tornado with a butterfly net — a magical butterfly net, but still.7. Evolved Female Characters(Photo by Scott Garfitt/BACKGRID)Though Good Omens’ main characters, Aziraphale and Crowley, are male, we find engaging and richly drawn women among the secondary stars of the series. Anathema spends most of her time chasing a McGuffin, but in the end contributes greatly to the stop-the-Apocalypse cause.“There s a big difference between a tough female character and a strong female character and Anathema s strong, she s very in her essence,” Arjona said. “She s a woman and she s sure of herself and so unsure of what she s doing and messes up, and she s flawed and she doesn t get it right all the time — sometimes she does — and she has this guy that s following her and never falls into romance. She’s like, ‘I gotta do what I gotta do — maybe after babe. I ll catch you later.’ She s doing her own thing and I love that about her, and I wish a lot of other characters would be like that because relatable to me, and I see my friends and the way they deal with their careers and their own life, and it s very similar to Anathema.”Richardson’s Madame Tracy is a very rich character, who, despite her own flaws, endures a level of verbal abuse and emotional sabotage from Shadwell.“Madame Tracy has her own strengths. She, in some ways, feels a bit retro. I mean, her part is retro, and the fact that she s making a living in the way she is, is a bit retro. But at the same time she s providing an incredible help in the community, and she s also very supportive, and she s trying to be a little bit life-enhancing … so there are those feminine traits, things showing. She takes care of Shadwell, and she looks out for people. It s rather lovely, but she s her own woman.”Good Omens sets out to prove a love bond between the prostitute and the Witchfinder, but where she definitely shuts the door on the risk of her infidelity, his name-calling promises to continue.“I know it is a bit questionable,” Richardson said, “but maybe it s, pardon the pun, better the devil you know. I don t know, you know? She s practical.”8. Unique Artistry(Photo by Amazon)The production design, effects, and costuming on the series lend a distinctive voice to the characters’ surroundings. Several of the actors noted that the costumes and unique environments helped them fully inhabit their characters.“There s an opportunity to sort of portray this guy as the boss that everyone has, that everyone hates, who s constantly smiling and telling you, ‘Great job,’ while also subconsciously saying, ‘You re terrible,’” Hamm related. “And, I ve worked for that guy before, and I ve hated him, and it was kind of fun to play. Just like, ‘Everything you re doing is wrong. Keep going.’ And, I got to wear so much cashmere in this, that it was A: warm, B: soft, C: comfy. But yeah, there was a lot to recommend for being on the heavenly side of thing, from a fabric point of view.”Arjona similarly credited the series’ style choices for aiding her performance: “I just tried on her boots and something happened, and I got really lucky because I didn t have to do much work after I tried on her boots.”9. An Uncompromised Creative Vision(Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images)With Good Omens, Gaiman sought to fulfill a deathbed wish of his collaborator on the book, Terry Pratchett, and so, dug in his heels.“Being the writer was relatively pleasant and entirely stress-free in that nobody was really waiting for this. I wrote it, I promised Terry I would write it, I wrote it, did the adaptation, divided the book into six, every 50 pages: OK, that s episode one, that s episode two. Fair enough, I ll write a mini movie through time that will kick off episode three. That was all simple and very stress free,” Gaiman said.“The problem is that I d promised Terry Pratchett that I would make a TV show that he would want to watch, and I d learned through my previous outings in television — some of which have been incredibly successful and some of which hadn t — that the measure of which were successful and which weren t were not the quality of the script to begin with; it was what actually wound up on the screen at the end. And I thought, OK, I have to be in a place where I can control that, where I have a director who I can work with who we share a vision with, where I can cast the people who I see in my head, where I m there just making sure that a producer who — producers don t understand scripts. I wish they did, but they don t —”MacKinnon: “Some of them do.”“Some of them do,” Gaiman conceded. “A lot of the time, what a producer will do when they go, ‘OK, we have X amount of money. We have this in the script and here is a sequence that is both expensive and if we lose it, we ll save a day of filming and nobody s going to notice if that scene is gone,’ completely failing to understand that if they pull that scene out, nothing that follows it will actually make any more sense. This is something producers have been doing since the dawn of time.“To make this thing for Terry, what I had to do was be in a place where I could just say no when somebody said, ‘So, we think we re going to lose Shakespeare s Globe.’ I go, ‘Yeah, no we re not.’ Sometimes I would come back with, ‘I ll tell you what. If we need to save that money, we can lose this scene after that you really like but that actually doesn t change anything. It can go.’”It’s the only instance of anyone tied to Good Omens who we’ve spoken to describing Gaiman’s behavior on the production as anything other than “lovely.”10. Heavenly Irreverence(Photo by Amazon Studios)Both Sheen and Tennant aren’t strangers to supernatural beings; Sheen appeared as Head Lycan in Charge Lucian in the Underworld vampires-versus-werewolves film franchise, then as The Twilight Saga vampire Aro. Tennant, meanwhile, not only played the titular extraterrestrial in Doctor Who for three seasons and in specials as the tenth Doctor, whose abilities were anything but earthly, but also turned up as witch and Voldemort loyalist Barty Crouch, Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The actors appear to take on these heavenly creatures with ease and a sort of glee.“All those characters like vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, they get reinvented — don t they? — by each generation, because they come to represent different things for each generation,” Sheen said. “And also budgets have changed. There s a lot more money to make stuff that can really use those sort of effects quite well. But in terms of Heaven and Hell and angels and demons — the end of time s and apocalypse is a whole other thing, I suppose — we re starting to think about slightly differently. I think the angels and demons thing and Heaven and Hell is always partly about going, well you have these two extremes and real life is about somehow being in the middle somewhere and being in the gray area and that s certainly what, I think, Good Omens is about.”There’s a good chance that Good Omens will ruffle some feathers, but Gaiman isn’t worried.“One of the things that I made a call writing literally page one, which was, I thought, Well, it could be Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and they re not going to be white. So, in the first five minutes, you re going to have to deal with the voice of God and she s a woman and she s Frances McDormand, and you re going to have to deal with a non-white Adam and Eve. That s your first five minutes. You can stop watching now. If you were upset or offended, great excuse to stop watching now. You will probably be much more offended by things later on like an 11-year-old Antichrist who is actually a good kid … But look, that was there for you: You had a five-minute warning — [Good Omens] actually starts with the word ‘warning.’”Good Omens debuts on Friday, May 31 on Amazon Prime.Like this? 环球体育外围 In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, we invited fans to take part in a mammoth survey to find out your favorite movies, characters, and moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – so far! Hundreds of Rotten Tomatoes fans took part, weighing in on their favorite Avengers, their favorite villains, their most heartbreaking Infinity War deaths, and which post-Endgame movie they re most excited to see. (Because it may be the endgame this week, but the MCU will go on). We dug deep into the data to spot some fun trends, seeing if there were divides along gender lines (ladies love M Baku, who d have thunk it!?) and generations (our Millennial/Non-Millennial split told us a bunch). Check out the results and major findings below, and let us know your own answers in the comments section.Captain America and Iron Man Tie for Favorite Avenger With 53%, While Ladies Love Thor(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In one of our survey’s most unsurprising results, the two Avengers whose relationship underpins the entire MCU came out on top when we asked Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? Some 53% of fans cast votes for Tony Stark and Steve Rogers; Thor came in a close third with 50% of respondents naming him one of their favorites.Cap was the clear overall favorite when it came to younger fans: 64% of Millennials named him one of their favorites (compared with 55% for Iron Man). Female fans were slightly less into Steve, though, with 44% of female respondents saying he was a favorite, compared with 59% of males. For the ladies, it was all about the God of Thunder: Thor got the highest percentage of female votes, with 55% of female respondents designating the Asgardian one of their most beloved heroes.Spidey was surprisingly divisive, both between the sexes and among generations. While 46% of male fans called Peter Parker one of their favorite Avengers, just 29% of female fans did the same. Not surprisingly, the youngest Avenger has some serious Millennial appeal, getting 44% of Millennials to name him a fave, compared with 36% of Non-Millennials.The top nine favorites in our survey were all characters who have had standalone MCU films (Hulk, whose standalone film did not star Mark Ruffalo, came in last amongst those). The bottom eight have not had their own films, although one is on the way for Black Widow (ranked 10th), and Scarlet Witch, Vision, Bucky Barnes, and Falcon will all appear in limited series on Disney+.Here are the full results from the question, Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? This feature is by Catherine Young, the current USC Annenberg-Rotten Tomatoes Digital Innovation and Entertainment Criticism fellow, a partnership with the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Toy Story 4 is nothing if not sincere. During a one-and-a-half-day visit to the Pixar campus in Emeryville – part of the California East Bay golden triangle of art-driven cities including Oakland and Berkeley – over a dozen supervisors, writers, and digital artisans hosted workshops and seminars about their upcoming June movie to answer the question that s on all our minds: Why? Why make another Toy Story? Especially when Toy Story 3 felt like the end; Andy passing his toys on to the next generation as he moves to college, the camera panning up to the sky, a bookend with the same clouds that opened the Toy Story back in 1995. Toy Story 3 delivered a mint-in-box rarity in today s world of tempting serialized storytelling and cinematic universes: A sense of finality, and closure. Why mess with that?Minor spoiler warning: This article describes the opening scene of Toy Story 4!It started in 2014.We re sitting in a board room with Pixar character modelers, directing animators, and story supervisors and artists. Like the rest of the world, they tell us, Pixar had moved on from Toy Story, not expecting to see the franchise s characters on the screen again, outside of shorts and television specials. Monsters University had just released. They were gearing up for the one-two punch of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Amidst the streamlined chaos, an impossible idea persisted: That there was still more Toy Story to tell, and it deserved to be on the biggest screens possible across the world. The idea turned to talk, turned to pencil against paper, turned to cursors across monitors, turned into crews and planning and development, until Toy Story 4 moved into The Steve Jobs Building, the campus section where movies are officially in production.BO PEEP FINALLY GETS HER DUEPixar story supervisor Valerie LaPointe tells the room that there are people at Pixar who, as children, had their world expanded watching Toy Story in theaters in 1995, who now get to work on the fourth, and understand the legacy they re molding on their computers every day. To LaPointe s left are five women, who minutes before had each spoken about their role on TS4, nodding in agreement. They are a crucial creative force at Pixar, and instrumental in forging the emotional ace of the new movie: Bo Peep. The porcelain lamp with her flock of sheep (voiced, as always, by Annie Potts) had a minor but memorable role in the original Toy Story as Woody s flame, with less to do in Toy Story 2. And while the main characters got their glorious (seeming) sendoff in Toy Story 3, Bo wasn t there at all, having been reduced to a sacrificial plot point to motivate and illuminate her boyfriend s emotional pain. Clearly, there was more story to tell, because her story hadn t been told at all.Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback. It s nighttime at Andy s house, in the middle of a downpour, set a bit before Toy Story 3. R/C is outside caught in a gutter torrent, spinning his wheels to keep from getting sucked into a sewer drain. Bo and Woody, always the contingency planners, execute a rescue mission that saves R/C and leaves Woody momentarily underneath a car in the driveway. Everything looks photo-decadent: the rain, the lighting, the subtle scuff on Buzz s plastic armor plating. Pixar has found new vistas to paint once again. Then, the bombshell: Molly, Andy s sister, is growing up and Bo s watch has ended – she s being carried in a box to the car, and soon to be off into the great donated unknown. Bo has accepted her fate, having long since known a porcelain lamp doesn t have quite the shelf life of a talking cowboy or space commando. Woody is frantic, and he attempts to get her out of the box. Bo does the opposite, offering a place beside her. Just as Bo knows her destination, Woody knows his is entwined with Andy, and as the car peels off, he s left in the driveway splintered by the rain. It s not quite Up territory in terms of Pixar opening-scene tearjerkers, but considering we ve known these characters for nearly 25 years, it s damn close.EYES PEELED FOR PLENTY OF PIXAR EASTER EGGSFor eagle-eyed viewers, something may catch your attention: The car s license plate – always cinematic fertile ground for easter eggs, especially in Pixar films. RMR F97, the plates read. But what does it mean? It is an easter egg! director Josh Cooley laughed during our press conference. On Toy Story 2, there was someone who worked on the show that accidentally deleted the movie from the render farm, producer Mark Nielsen said, who worked modeling and shading on Toy Story 2.  That was the command on the computer that deleted the film. Galyn Susman, who was an early producer on this film, was on maternity leave and had a backup of the movie at her house, and brought it back to Pixar and restored it, added producer Jonas Rivera. It felt appropriate that the license plate on the car that takes Bo away would be the same that killed Toy Story 2. From the filmmakers words and the footage and material shown, it becomes apparent Toy Story 4 will probably become the most easter egg-laden movie the studio has ever produced. At one point, Woody and Forky – a spork with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner arms come to life, who exists as his own existential quandary – end up in an antique store. Full of neat knick-knacks and weathered baubles, it s a set piece that puts Pixar s detailed creativity on full display, not to mention plenty of references to their past.Look for a sign that says Papa Rivera s, a reference to the aforementioned producer. The Eggman Movers truck, around since the first Toy Story, makes a comeback, long known to be tied to art director Ralph Eggleston. From Finding Nemo, you can see the tiki heads from the fish tank on some shelves. There s steel decoration for Catmull s Brews, named after Ed Catmull, who s been with the company since the beginning and is retiring the month after Toy Story 4 is released. The Catmull sign hangs over a pinball machine whose interior has been turned into a miniature nightclub; Tinny, from the 1988 short Tin Toy, is the bouncer. (And for you pinheads out there, the machine was modeled after Bally s 1977 Black Jack – and we saw that tucked away in a room at Pixar HQ when we were doing a workshop making our own Forkys.)A FEMALE VILLAIN, FULL-ON BODY HORROR, AND BOO?Elsewhere in the antique store, Woody and Forky meet Gabby-Gabby, an angelic 50s doll and the first female antagonist of the series. Gabby Gabby commands a league of dapper and wholly unsettling ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding, like trying to rip out Woody s voice box to replace her own broken one. To set the body horror mood, Gabby Gabby puts on a record playing music from Coco, the vinyl pressed on the prestigious Chalupa Records. And that s not the only Coco reference. Part of the road trip includes visiting a carnival fair across the street from the antique store, which is where Woody reunites with Bo, who has been leading a joyous, independent, if not occasionally challenging life as a lost toy. One of the carnival game prizes is the guitar from Coco. And who s joined in among the festivities? A teenage Boo from Monsters, Inc, who appears to have not changed her style since 2001. Hey, purple shirts and scrunchies are eternal! And all those easter eggs were from less than 30 minutes of footage. As Toy Story 4 has been in the works for the last five years, the studio has seen some major changes. Ed Catmull is retiring. Beloved animator Bud Luckey passed away (he was all over the classic Boundin short). And founder John Lasseter left in scandal. It’s been a different time from their heyday, when Pixar racked up 11 Certified Fresh movies between Toy Story and 3; then a record, now overtaken by Marvel Studios current 14. During the visit, it s clear here was a movie being made by people both filmmaker and fan, who see this as a continuation of the golden age. Maybe they re always like this with their movies. For anyone born after 2010, this is the first chance to watch a new Toy Story on the big screen. It could even be their first movie theater experience ever. That s quite the gift. It s the same one Pixar offered in 1995, and many people who took it back then, grew up, got a job there, made Toy Story 4, talked to a bunch of press, and now get to offer it up to a new generation. Returning to the toy cowboy who s devoted to the joy of others, Pixar has become the studio it always was: A house of toil and dream, where old things find new life.Like this? 环球体育外围 (Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd, Twentieth Century Fox)The arrival of Star Wars: The Bad Batch on May 4 is another step in Star Wars’s growing presence on Disney+. With its offerings on the streamer previously confined to The Mandalorian and the extant feature films and animated series, Lucasfilm stunned fans and investors last December with an ambitious plan to produce as many as 10 television series for Disney+ in the next decade. In addition to its Disney+ roster, the company also intends to make at least three features by 2027.So yes, there is a ton of new Star Wars movies and new Star Wars series flying our way.Of course, fans of Star Wars media already knew the fictional galaxy could fuel hundreds of film and shows. They also hope the expansion of Star Wars content means there will be room for Jedi Knight protagonist Kyle Katarn to re-enter the canon. And canonicity is a big deal for Star Wars. When Disney first bought Lucasfilm, they declared all previous Star Wars comics, novels, games, and cartoons (except for the long-running Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as non-canon legends of the Star Wars galaxy. The move was made to offer maximum freedom to the filmmakers involved in the Sequel Trilogy (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and Rise of Skywalker), but it didn t take long for Legends characters and ideas to seep back into programs like Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian. And, as you will see in this guide to Star Wars’s streaming and theatrical future below, those senses of canon and continuity are as important to the galaxy far, far away as the Force itself. Here we ve gathered everything we know about every Star Wars movie and series coming to streaming and theaters in the next few years, and broken down how they fit into the emerging Star Wars galaxy. Tell us which new Star Wars projects you re most excited about in the comments.Disney+ SeriesThe Book Of Boba Fett(Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: December 2021What We Know: Announced in the closing moments of The Mandalorian’s second season last winter, the program will follow Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) as he reclaims his place in the galactic underworld. Whether or not the the series begins from the scene of him taking over Jabba the Hutt’s old palace, which we saw in The Mandalorian, remains to be seen. Along for the ride is Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), who owes a debt to Fett and whose own story seems to be spread across the various Star Wars shows – she is also scheduled to make an appearance on The Bad Batch (with Wen providing her voice). Behind the camera, El Mariachi director Robert Rodriguez – who directed Fett s full return to Star Wars in a second-season Mandalorian episode – joins executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni as an Executive Producer and creative force in the story. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the series will debut in December, although it is possible the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may delay that plan. That said, filming began in November 2020 and seems to have occurred without incident. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As with The Mandalorian, the series will continue to develop the post-Empire galaxy in the era between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. But by focusing its gaze on the criminals, it gets to tell a wholly new story. Although, it is easy to imagine Fett’s old brigade of bounty hunters might stop by to wish him well on his new endeavor.Star Wars Visions(Photo by Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: 2021What We Know: The 10-episode anthology series will feature leading Japanese anime studios as they bring a new spin to Star Wars locations and characters. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As this is an anthology concerned with the distinctive styles of the participating animation studios, we’re not sure how it fits or even if it will be canon. With Disney+ uploading non-canon content like the Ewoks TV movies and Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2-D Clone Wars series in recent days, there is room for Visions to ruminate on the ideas of Star Wars without being bound to the state of the galaxy or Lucasfilm s overall plans for ongoing stories. Although, with one of the episodes inspiring author Emma Mieko Candon s upcoming novel, Star Wars Visions: Ronin, the program may yet prove to be a vital part of Star Wars. The Mandalorian: Season 3(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. All Rights Reserved.)Premiere Date: Early 2022What We Know: Reportedly beginning production in early April, the program will begin a new story as Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) deals with the repercussions of becoming the heir apparent to the throne of Mandalore. Presumably, Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) will not be too thrilled about that development, but will it lead to them fighting for the Darksaber or hashing out some sort of accord? Also, will Djarin finally accept that he must help liberate the planet from the Imperial Remnant? Meanwhile, Grogu begins his training with Luke Skywalker. Although, it is easy to imagine circumstances will lead the Child back to Djarin. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As the flagship show, The Mandalorian still sets the pace in the post-ROTJ galaxy. With Imperial Remnants still working towards some sort of plan to push back the New Republic – and the New Republic trying to create order in the generally lawless Outer Rim – the stage will eventually be set for the weakened Republic glimpsed in the Sequel Trilogy.Andor(Photo by Walt Disney Pictures)Premiere Date: 2022What We Know: One of two programs announced for Disney+ before the platform launched – the other being The Mandalorian – Andor has been long in the planning. Finally beginning production in November of 2020, the 12-episode series will star Diego Luna as his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story character, Cassian Andor, in a story set five years before the events of the film. Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller are along for the adventure, as is Genevieve O Reilly as Mon Montha, a key figure in the Rebel Alliance that the actor has played in Star Wars media since a scene cut from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. And although Alan Tudyk was originally meant to reprise his role as K-2SO, the actor revealed in January of 2021 that the droid will not appear in the first season. The series was originally developed by Jared Bush, but Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy is credited as creator. He also serves as showrunner, replacing The Americans’ Stephen Schiff, although his plan to direct the first three episodes was curtailed by the pandemic. Toby Haynes picked up the director chores alongside Ben Caron and Susanna White. Joining Gilroy in the writers’ room is his brother, Dan Gilroy, and House of Cards’ Beau Willimon. Schiff is also still onboard as an episode writer. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Thanks to its place in the timeline – five or so years before the original Star Wars – the program has the opportunity to expose hidden depths within the Rebel Alliance which could set up conflicts in the post-ROTJ era. Also, it could be a chance to establish Star Wars Rebels characters in live action while telling its own story of intrigue and suspense.Obi-Wan Kenobi(Photo by Industrial Light Magic/Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation/Courtesy Everett Collection)Premiere Date: 2022What We Know: Growing out of an abandoned Star Wars Story film, the series sees Ewan McGregor return as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the loyal Jedi sent into exile on Tatooine following the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the Old Republic’s descent into Empire. The cast also includes Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O Shea Jackson Jr., Moses Ingram, Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, and Maya Erskine. Edgerton and Piesse reprise their Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clone roles as Owen Lars and Beru Whitsun, although they now serve as guardians to a roughly ten-year-old Luke Skywalker. Also set to return: Prequel Trilogy star Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. The Mandalorian’s Deborah Chow serves as director and executive producer alongside Kennedy, McGregor, and Tracey Seaward. Joby Harold takes over writing duties from Hossein Amini, who left the project sometime in early 2020. Production on the six-episode limited series is reportedly underway right now.How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Set 10 years prior to the original Star Wars film and focusing on a time when everyone presumed Obi-Wan was just meditating in the desert and waiting for Luke to grow up, it may offer some further insights into characters seen on The Book of Boba Fett or glimpsed on The Mandalorian’s various trips to Tatooine. But for longtime fans, the chance to see Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru again may be the program’s biggest gift.Ahsoka(Photo by (c) 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. TM. All Rights Reserved)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: After her debut in The Mandalorian s second season, Rosario Dawson returns as the live-action version of the Star Wars: Clone Wars fan-favorite character. Although no plot details are as yet available, fans assume the series will pick up from Rebels closing moments with Ahsoka continuing her search for the long-missing Ezra Bridger. That said, it is always possible that journey has ended and Ahsoka s only mission is to track down Grand Admiral Thrawn. It is currently unclear how quickly the series will go into production or who will actually run the program. But considering Filoni’s long association with the character, the program may serve as his first live-action production as showrunner. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: In continuing Ahsoka’s story – and possibly resolving Ezra’s – the program serves as both a cap to her animated adventures and the beginning of a new era for the character. As it happens, her voice is heard toward the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, suggesting she is one with the Force by Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) time. Answering how she got there may be part of the show’s mission statement, but we’ll be quite happy if it takes another 10 years to reveal how her physical form meets its final end.Rangers of the New Republic(Photo by © Lucasfilm Ltd.)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: A third new series from Favreau and Filoni – the others being The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka will follow a group of New Republic soldiers in the same era as The Mandalorian. While Kennedy offered few details about this show during a Disney Investor Day presentation in December of 2020, she mentioned it will cross over with other stories from The Mandalorian and Ahsoka to culminate in an “event” at some point in the future. An Avengers-style crossover would be a new thing for Star Wars, so it will be interesting to see how this develops. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: As the program is the most mysterious, the crossover seems to be the most tantalizing element. Will the liberation of Mandalore be saved for it? Or will a larger skirmish with the Imperial Remnant prove to be its focus? Also, considering the state of the galaxy in the Sequel Trilogy, did the Rangers mission fail? Definitely a question worth exploring. The Acolyte(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: The long-in-the-works project from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland and Lucasfilm story executive Rayne Roberts will focus on a character during the final days of the High Republic – a period roughly a century before the Skywalker Saga – who comes to know shadowy secrets and emerging Dark Side powers. The mystery/thriller series will also reportedly feature a martial arts element, so fans of the Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi video game may finally get a chance to be recognized for their loyalty. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: The High Republic is the current focus of Lucasfilm’s publishing initiatives, so the series will presumably import some of its recently introduced novel and comic book characters to the streaming screen. Also, as the era is a fresh period in Star Wars history, it has the room to create new locales and situations free of the Skywalker Saga or even the galaxy as mapped by Favreau and Filoni.Lando(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Premiere Date: TBDWhat We Know: Dear White People’s Justin Simien is developing a limited series devoted to charismatic card player and scoundrel Lando Calrissian. While it is unclear who will play the title role, a teaser video featuring Lando’s unblemished Millennium Falcon shown during the 2020 Investor Day presentation suggests it will go back to the days before he met Han Solo. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: That all depends on when it takes place. A focus on the older Lando (played by Billy Dee Williams) could follow up on his promise to help Jannah (Naomi Ackie) find her people and offer us the first glimpse of the galaxy following the destruction of the New Republic and the First Order. A series primarily concerned with young Lando (played by Donald Glover) would be less concerned with lore and, potentially, revel in the fun of being a scoundrel. And, then, of course, the program could be about both things at once – a storytelling device Star Wars has yet to really employ in its live-action efforts.MoviesStar Wars: Rogue Squadron(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)Release Date: December 22, 2023What We Know: First revealed at the 2020 Investor Day presentation, Rogue Squadron will be directed by Wonder Woman s Patty Jenkins and focus on a new generation of X-Wing pilots. In a video posted to her Twitter account, Jenkins revealed the story is personal as her father was a fighter pilot who lost his life in service to his country. She also subsequently clarified that the film will honor the Rogue Squadron video games and novels even as it flies off in its own direction. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: That all depends on when the film takes place. For the moment, we re going to presume Star Wars feature films will continue to move forward from the time of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the new Rogue Squadron forms to aid whatever government replaces the New Republic. That means characters from the Sequel Trilogy like Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) could show up, but don t rule out another big time-jump to set the film apart from the Skywalker Saga entirely.Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Film(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel)Release Date: 2025 (Our Guess)What We Know: Although the industry knew about Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi s Star Wars project for some time, Kennedy finally commented on it in December 2020, saying his approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and unique.   She also pointed to his talent – which is evident in his films – and his sense of humor as two strengths which will set Waititi s project apart from other Star Wars endeavors. Presumably, it will fill the Star Wars feature film slot Disney is currently holding for 2025; considering he is currently working with Disney on Thor: Love and Thunder for a February, 2022 release, the timing should work out.How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Like Jenkins s film, it all depends on when it is set. With thousands of years of lore available to explore, Waititi could do just about anything he wants – from a story set on the world where sentient creatures first felt the Force to a film set entirely in Ackmena s (Beatrice Arthur) cantina from The Star Wars Holiday Special. And as Ragnarok proved, he can make just about any Star Wars setting a place of laughs, jeopardy, and thrills.Rian Johnson s Star Wars Trilogy: Episode I(Photo by David James/ © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Lucasfilm Ltd. /Courtesy Everett Collection)Release Date: 2027 (Our Guess)What We Know: First announced in 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expected to spearhead a new trilogy sometime in the next decade – writing and directing the first film himself. And although he reportedly reaffirmed his involvement as recently as this past February, no additional details are known. Currently, the director is expected to fast-track two sequels to his hit film Knives Out after Netflix paid almost half a billion dollars for the chance to stream them. Of course, that may not prevent his Star Wars trilogy from going forward as Lucasfilm seems happy to wait for him and build out different regions of the galaxy in the interim. Whether he ll be done telling Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) mysteries in time to make a film to fill the 2027 release date Disney has mapped out for a Star Wars film is anyone s guess. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Right now, it doesn t. It s just an agreement to make a series of movies, and as seen with Lucasfilm s quick decision to cancel the Star Wars Story anthology of films in wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story s underperformance, that deal could dissolve at any moment. See also: the company s about-face regarding a series of films to be developed by Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.A Droid Story(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: As Kennedy described at the 2020 Investor Day presentation, the only Star Wars TV movie currently on the Disney+ roster will be an “epic journey” featuring a new hero guided by Star Wars most famous droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Although the Lucasfilm president was light on story details, she did mention the project will be a chance for the company’s animation and live-action special effects groups to stretch their expertise to its limits. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Like Visions, the film may also be freed from canon. At the same time, that new hero whom Artoo and Threepio guide could become part of Patty Jenkins s upcoming Star Wars: Rogue Squadron feature, a subsequent film, or, perhaps, a story set after well after Rey put an end to Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).Untitled Kevin Feige Star Wars Film(Photo by Albert L. Ortega/WireImage)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Word first broke in 2019 that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was involved in developing a Star Wars film with Kennedy. At the time, Walt Disney Studios Co-Chairman Alan Horn said it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together. Like the first episode of the Johnson trilogy, it could end up becoming the Star Wars feature Disney releases in 2027. Then again, Feige s calendar is much busier than Johnson s and he ll likely be deep into planing Phase 6 or 7 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the time the film would need to be shooting to meet that release date. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Not even Baskin-Robbins knows how it will fit into the rest of Lucasfilm s plans for Star Wars.Untitled J.D. Dillard Star Wars Project(Photo by Leon Bennett/WireImage)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sleight director J.D. Dillard and Marvel TV writer Matt Owens (Luke Cage) are developing some sort of Star Wars project for Lucasfilm. In the year since the story first broke, though, no additional details have come to light. And even at the time of reporting, it was unclear if the project would be a Disney+ series, TV movie, or feature film. That ambiguity makes it an even more tenuous project than Johnson s trilogy. How It Fits Into the Emerging Star Wars Galaxy: Curiously, Dillard made a brief appearance in The Rise of Skywalker as FN-1226, one of the stormtroopers Rey mindtricks during Chewbacca s (Joonas Suotamo) rescue. Whether or not this would play into his project is unknown, but it does remind us that many First Order soldiers, stolen from their parents at a young age and conditioned to serve First Order interests, still deserve to be liberated. Well, the ones who survived the Battle of Exegol, anyway.Which Star Wars projects are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments. On an Apple device?
