环球体育买球采用百度引擎9(Baidu 4)Indonesian director Joko Anwar is one of the most exciting horror talents working today, and Impetigore might be his most effective – and surprisingly moving – film to date. The story is free-wheeling and complex, but essentially involves a young woman returning to her ancestral village, where she’s inherited a house. Is it haunted? Probably. Why do the locals seem so suspicious of her? We’re about to find out. This incredibly atmospheric film kicks off with what might be the tensest horror opening of the decade – a strange man terrorizes a toll booth worker – and from there piles on killer set pieces and unforgettable imagery at a clip. Indonesia selected Impetigore as its entry for the Oscars’ international feature category; we hope the Academy takes a risk on this genre gem and shortlists it.Available on: Shudder

Although the opening shot of 1999 s Mystery Men is pure DC Cinematic Universe – the strange semi-futuristic cityscape that echoes Tim Burton’s Batman, the worshipful but also terrifying statue of local hero Captain Amazing that feels straight out of Zack Snyder s world – what follows actually lays out a template for what would eventually be Marvel’s complete and utter dominance in the superhero movie space. Two movies that were released just prior to Mystery Men – Blade in 1998 and The Matrix in March 1999 – are most often credited with kickstarting the comic book movie revival. The Wachowskis anime-inspired sci-fi blockbuster showed how super-powered action could and should look, while Wesley Snipes’ vampire crusader proved you could find success beyond Marvel’s A-list roster. But looking back, neither of those films really fit tonally with what the MCU would become. The real seeds were planted in a silly and underrated Ben Stiller comedy that celebrates its 20th birthday on August 6. Here’s how.The CastOne of the hallmarks of Marvel movies is that they are littered with big and unexpected names, from Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man to Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Matt Damon in Thor: Ragnarok. For a superhero goof, Mystery Men shared similar out-of-the-box thinking, resulting in even the smaller roles being surprisingly memorable. The main team was comprised of an Avengers-level mix of mid- to late- 90s indie and comedy stars, including Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, and Paul Reubens; the main villain was a supremely hammy Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, and the periphery was dotted with “whoa, really” names like Eddie Izzard, Ricky Jay, Cee-Lo Green, Dane Cook, and Tom Waits. Superhero movies had come a long way from a time when they were the last refuge of stuntmen and up-and-comers, and Mystery Men took the baton from Tim Burton (who went way outside the box with Michael Keaton in Batman) and ran with it for a bit before Marvel took over. The World Building(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Although Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger hit some of the expected story points, by and large Marvel got away from doing traditional origin stories. Rather than having each new hero start off in a blank slate world where they’re the only ones with superpowers, Marvel built a world where multiple heroes and villains existed in various points throughout history. Mystery Men, too, drops you right into the thick of it with a superteam fighting supervillains in a city that is so comfortable with its own Superman that he has corporate sponsors. There is a sequence about midway through the movie in which the Mystery Men hold open tryouts (a gag that would be recycled in Deadpool 2), and they are swarmed with wannabes. This is a world as used to seeing this sort of thing as the people of MCU New York are to seeing Spider-Man.The HumorNaturally, Mystery Men was never intended to be anything but a superhero spoof. But its willingness to embrace the core silliness of the superhero concept helped show Marvel how to overcome a major obstacle. The knock against the DC movies is that they are dark, plodding, largely humorless affairs. And if you start to take the idea of people in fancy suits flying around cities too seriously, the whole thing begins to falls apart. The self-awareness to know that humor makes comic book storytelling go down a lot easier fuels Marvel even at its darkest. Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame would have been too much to take without the relief supplied by Dr. Strange and Tony Stark’s catty bickering, or Korg’s epic Fornite battle against Noobmaster69.The Team DynamicsAnd speaking of the bickering A team of noble heroes who all share an unshakable respect for one another, and who treat each other with courtesy and dignity at all times… is boring. Like Mystery Men, Marvel understands that teams like the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy thrive when they don’t get along. Likewise, the Mystery Men treat each other more like co-workers than real friends. Post-battle, they sit in diners and complain like they just clocked out of a factory job (and coincidentally, the original Avengers ends with… the team sitting around in a diner eating). The (Lack of) Secret Identities(Photo by MCA courtesy Everett Collection)This is an extension of the world-building idea, but it’s no coincidence that Marvel ditched the concept of “secret identities” as soon as it could. It’s a hindrance more than it is a help – watch how they bend over backwards to get Tony Stark fighting helmetless, or how many times Captain America takes his mask off so you can see his face. Mystery Men doesn’t even bother with masking its heroes. They exist in a world that’s gotten used to the idea of superheroes, just as the MCU seems to be pretty OK with one of the world’s most successful tech billionaires occasionally running off to fight Thanos, and where kids think nothing of asking Hulk for a selfie. The Balancing Act(Photo by MCA courtesy Everett Collection)In the end, though, Mystery Men still allows its crew of misfit heroes to have their moment. They’ve been the butt of the joke for most of the movie’s runtime, but they’re ultimately still allowed to be heroic and win the day. There’s just enough earnestness there to get away with it – had the movie gone more cynical, it would have piled on the jokes regardless of whether or not anyone saved anything. It’s a delicate balance, and a Marvel entry like Thor: Ragnarok actually feels right in line with it. It never quite tips completely over into out-and-out Thor parody, though it comes close. But Marvel had, by that point, settled so comfortably into a tone that both celebrates and pokes fun at the concept of superheroes that it all managed to work. And who would have thought it would be the Mystery Men who’d light the way?Mystery Men was released in theaters on August 6, 1999.

During Awards Season, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley will be reporting on the big contenders, the most important ceremonies, and surprise shifts in the race towards Oscar gold.If Toronto and Telluride start the awards conversation, the first two big indie awards nominations of the year start to put that chatter into sharper focus – showing which titles are actually going to do more than get people talking. On Friday, November 16, Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Private Life’s Molly Shannon will unveil The Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 nominees, and later this month, The Gotham Awards will hold their annual ceremony honoring the lifetime achievements of Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Greengrass, alongside their category winners. Keep a close eye on the winners. In recent years, indie darlings Moonlight and Spotlight won big at both ceremonies and ended the season with a Best Picture win, beating out bigger-budget commercial frontrunners.  With the Gotham Awards kicking things off later this month and the Independent Spirits holding their ceremony the night before the Oscars, let’s take a closer look at these two indie awards shows that effectively bookend the season and examine how well they signal future Oscar accolades.Gotham Awards(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images)Established: 1991Nominations Announced: October 18Ceremony: Monday, November 26, 2018Voting Body: Contenders are nominated by a jury of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators; a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and film crew members vote on the winner. Both juries are primarily composed of New York or Northeastern-based industry folk.Criteria: Films made with an economy of means, though no specific dollar amount is listed.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best ScreenplayIn its early years, The Gotham Awards primarily celebrated films created by Northeastern filmmakers or filmed in the area; thus the awards were aptly named ‘Gotham,’ the unofficial pseudonym for New York City. However, in 2004 The Independent Film Project (IFP), the largest and longest-running not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of independent film, broadened its scope to include the larger filmmaking community, including international films. Announcing nominees in mid-October, The Gothams hammer down the first stakes on the road to next year s Oscars. But with nominations proposed by a jury looking to champion hidden gems, the winners don t always line up with Oscar nominations. Last year, only Jordan Peele’s Get Out earned similar honors at both the Gothams and the Oscars when he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight and Spotlight went on the win Best Picture after winning Best Feature at the Gothams, beating out early front-runners La La Land and The Revenant. On the acting side, Matthew McConaughey and Casey Affleck sprinted off the blocks with Gotham Best Actor wins and crossed the tape with Best Actor Oscars in 2013 and 2016. But since 2013, only Julianne Moore managed to win both a Gotham and an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice. The nomination numbers slightly favor the ladies, with 40% of Gotham Nominees making it to Oscar night, while only 33% of male nominees accomplish the same feat. In the end, the Gothams are a good indication of Oscar potential but not much more than that.Independent Spirit Awards(Photo by Randall Michelson/Getty Images)Established: 1984Nominations Announced: November 16Ceremony: Saturday, February 23, 2019Voting Body: Film Independent MembersCriteria: US-Based film for major Categories. Cost of the completed film must be less than million.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead. Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best EditingHeld in a tent off the Santa Monica pier on the Saturday before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards are the laid back California cousin to the NYC-based Gothams, or maybe just a boozy, low-budget Oscar pre-party take your pick. Last year, Frances McDormand sported a pajama-styled dress suit, and Timothée Chalamet arrived decked out in an oversized button-down looking like he’d finished a shift at Kwik Trip. Dress code aside, one thing is sure: the Independent Spirit Awards go hand in hand with Oscar gold. Since 2009, every Independent Spirit Best Feature winner has been nominated for Best Picture, with four of the last five Best Feature winners going on to win Best Picture. Since 2010, the acting nominations are on par with the Gothams, with about 30% of the acting nominees also nominated in comparable Oscar categories. Winning an Independent Spirit, however, significantly ups a nom s chances, with a staggering 65% of Indie winners winning on both nights.Still, the awards are known for rewarding performances that don t get much Oscar love: John Hawkes, Molly Shannon, Mya Taylor, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, and Idris Elba all won acting awards at the Spirits without earning an Oscar nomination in comparable categories. Taking all this into account on Friday, November 16th should drop several clues to the films that will shape the season. This year, current Best Picture frontrunner A Star Is Born is ineligible at the Indie Spirits, leaving Netflix’s Roma the presumed favorite among Film Independent voters. But word has it Roma will be relegated to only Best International Film, even though it was produced by and financed by Netflix and Participant Media, two US-based production companies. If Roma pulls any nominations and happens to win when the trophies are handed out in February, don t rule it out for a Best Picture win. Like La La Land and The Revenant before it, A Star Is Born may be just that – a star that burned bright but fizzled out come voting time. Or it could burn bright. Who knows – it s not even December. Either way, stay tuned Friday to see who gets a little heat from the Spirit nominations.

Critics are certainly showing their appreciation for action flick Nobody, lifting the movie to a Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 80%. That’s an improvement over Ilya Naishuller’s debut film, Hardcore Henry (52%) from 2015. Nobody also bested that film’s opening (.1 million in 3,015 theaters) with an estimated .7 million in 2,460 theaters with limited capacity. (Tom Jerry opened in 2,475 theaters.) That’s the third-best opening of the year to date behind only the family entries of T J and Raya and the Last Dragon. Is this the first good sign that adults (hopefully of the vaccinated variety) are headed back into theaters? The Little Things opened to .7 million on the last weekend in January , while also available on HBO Max. Last summer’s attempt to reopen with Russell Crowe in Unhinged netted a million wide release (1,823 theaters); the movie then slowly made its way to million. It’s going to be interesting to chart the progression of Nobody as new wide releases enter the marketplace almost every week going forward. The Top Ten And Beyond: Raya Holds On As The Courier Expands(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)After three weeks at number 1, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon dropped to second place, falling 32% to .5 million for a total of .4 million to date. The year’s top grosser fell to third place, as Tom Jerry took in another .5 million for a total of .1 million. That makes it the 11th-highest-grossing film since the beginning of 2020 and the fourth-highest since the pandemic behind only Tenet, The Croods: A New Age, and Wonder Woman 1984; the latter two are still in the top 10 with The Croods sequel still creeping up on Tenet’s total. After four weeks, the long-delayed Chaos Walking has crept over the million mark after opening to .77 million. That’s a feat unattained by fellow wide March releases that opened between .5-4 million: Slither, Missing In Action II: The Beginning, Boat Trip, Unsane, 3 Strikes, Amos Andrew, and Pride. The Benedict Cumberbatch spy thriller, The Courier, added 208 theaters and fell 48% but still grossed another .04 million for a total of .48 million. That makes it the 32nd highest-grossing release in Roadside Attractions’ history, which – all things considered – is not too shabby. Especially when it will take less than just another million for it to join the company’s top 25.These Dates In Box Office History: Milestones for Logan, Rango, Horton Hears A Who!
Last week the yearly box office fell behind the past four years with a margin of 9.1% down from the record-breaking year of 2018. Well, like Jurassic World before it, never count out the nostalgia of new parents and never count out the box office when it comes to big spectacles like The Lion King. It just became the biggest July opener of all-time and this weekend’s top 10 represents one of the best July weekends in box office history. The Lion King of the Crop: 5 Million Grubbed Up(Photo by Disney)Tracking services hit it right on the nose as Lion King hauled in 5 million. That is the 9th highest opening weekend in film history and the best ever in the month of July beating the 2011 record set by the 9.1 million of the final Harry Potter chapter. Disney now owns 12 of the top 13 openings of all-time with that pesky Jurassic World stuck right in the middle of their cash buffet. None of those 12 other films grossed less than 0 million and The Lion King is not going anywhere anytime soon.Audiences appear to love it while critics are pretty split with a 55% on the Tomatometer. Even if they do have LARF (Live-Action-Reimagining-Fatigue) in a year that has already seen Dumbo (46%) and Aladdin (56%), these are the same critics who gave Jon Favreau’s CGI-enhanced remake of The Jungle Book a 94%. So it s still all in the execution. But it will be left up to moviegoers across the world to determine whether it can make the .347 billion necessary to earn a spot in the all-time top 10. After three days of domestic release and 10 globally, The Lion King has grossed 1 milli

(Photo by DC Universe)Click her to see the full image in a new tab.DC Universe turned up the heat at WonderCon on Friday with a slew of updates about their exclusive originals, including revealing the first official look at Stargirl from Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros. (Photo by Neilson Barnard/Getty Images)Alan Silvestri has composed the music for 17 of Robert Zemeckis movies, which sounds like a perpetual golden ticket to Oscar glory. Instead, Silvestri has only been nominated once for Best Original Score: for 1994 s Forrest Gump, which fell to The Lion King. Silvestri will have to take cold comfort in the fact his scores are among the most beloved and remembered in contemporary movie history, a body of work including the Back to the Future trilogy, Predator, The Polar Express, and now the Avengers theme. He entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe scoring Captain America: The First Avenger, returning a year later for 2012 s The Avengers, introducing a now iconic theme that has carried into Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and now Endgame. With the dust settling on the MCU s blockbuster emotion-wringer, Silvestri spoke on the origins of the Avengers theme, the temptation of using themes for every superhero, and his favorite Endgame musical moment.Spoiler warning for Avengers: Endgame!Alex Vo for Rotten Tomatoes: What were the origins of the Avengers theme? When did you start working on it, and when did you know you had it?Alan Silvestri: I had done Captain America for Marvel and got a call from Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon about Avengers. And they were very interested in exploring some possibility of [what] would become the Avengers theme. Time went on and I started to work my way into the film. When the mission is something like [coming up] with an overall theme, I try to find some place in the film that is going to be the quintessential spot where whatever the theme is, it s going to have to work here.I wound up going to that place in the film where they re all gathered and they re in the midst of this battle, and it s right after Banner arrives on a motorcycle. And it was such an interesting place in that film because these folks are in the middle of this big battle and it s all terrible and dangerous. All of a sudden they re in the town square, shoulder to shoulder, and nobody s moving. They re just literally posing. And it was the iconic Marvel still of the Avengers. And so the theme, whatever it was going to be, had to really carry that moment and help. I knew it had to be something heroic. Long, heroic, brass-filled notes in this melody, but we were also in the middle of this battle. So we needed to keep the energy up. So there s this string ostinato that that keeps the sense of drive. One thing led to another and that that s what came out, and it has lived on through the Avengers films, which has been fantastic.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rotten Tomatoes: Iconic superhero themes usually serve one person, like Batman or Superman. What was the challenge in scoring a group?Silvestri: We talked early on in Avengers, and we also revisited the conversation in Infinity War and Endgame, about how you actually approach the characters thematically. Or how you don t approach them. I mean, clearly the Avengers experiment had to do with this collection of superheroes now fighting together as a team. And so, the conversation would come up: Are we going to really play a theme for each of the individuals and then have an Avengers theme or not? Certainly in Endgame, because of the sheer number of characters, we felt like the music had to hold things together and unify the film, and that if every one of these characters had their own signature themes, it could wind up doing just the opposite and become too distracting and fragmented. So again, the theme had to work for the collective, for the Avengers as a group, even though we did some call outs in all the films to some specific characters. Natasha had her bit of a theme in the original Avengers. Thanos clearly had his theme in Infinity War and Endgame. We tried to view the film musically from the point of view of the group. And the other interesting thing we found: With the Avengers theme, a little goes a long way. It’s a very simple, identifiable piece of thematic material, and you can abuse it just as easily as you can use it. So we knew we had to be very judicious in when and how we used the theme.Rotten Tomatoes: The actors don t get the full script for these movies. At what point are you brought in the process, especially for Infinity War and Endgame? Do you know all the story beats ahead of time?Silvestri: Yeah, I actually do. I actually know everything, and I have everything as it s being recorded. I have to be looking at the entire arc of the film all the time. Otherwise you really couldn t have the kind of overview, a sensibility that the score has to really bring to the film.Rotten Tomatoes: There’s an Endgame track called “The How Works” which I think is vital to the movie: It plays as the movie sells to the audience it s going all-in on time travel. Then the song has a flute rendition of the Avengers theme. Then it goes into crime jazz, a heist theme. Are there any limitations on where you can go on these movies?Silvestri: No, and I think that s one of the fun parts of the letting the movie take you to where it wants to go. And it s one of the nice things about having a simple, identifiable theme: It can be dressed in many, many different ways. And Marvel is known for having fun and for having humor in their films. And you used the word: heist. We just knew that we would have some fun with those traditional sounding, caper-type movies. And yet, our theme had to travel along with those kinds of settings. So we re using bongo drums and flutes and triangles and all of these rhythms. And it s kind of like a spy movie, but at the same time we have our Avengers theme being there. So we had a lot of fun.Rotten Tomatoes: Due to the emotional nature of Endgame, there were a lot of soft moments: Tony floating in space, Cap seeing Peggy, or Tony giving Cap his shield back, which uses a reprise of The First Avenger theme. Did you find there were more opportunities for the music to breathe in Endgame compared to Infinity War or the other Avengers?Silvestri: I think absolutely. I think that was really what Endgame was going to be about. It was going to be about resolution of 21 films worth of characters. It’s why the film was as long as it was. I think that the Russo brothers knew, and the writers knew, that it was going to take some time to resolve these relationships. Hawkeye and Natasha, Tony and Pepper… So there was a lot more air and a lot of these quiet scenes. Even with a scene like Thor and his mother. Just spectacular emotional moments. And so it was an opportunity, in what at face value would be considered a big action superhero film, to have a lot of quiet emotional places for music. And for the performances of the actors as well.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rotten Tomatoes: Infinity War s fallen reappearing on the battlefield is going to be a defining image for a generation of moviegoers. How did you approach “Portals” for this?Silvestri: “Portals” was one of those scenes that the filmmakers identified early on as being a key moment, and potentially an historic moment in the entire Marvel universe. There were a number of different approaches that we took. And it took us a little while get a sense of what was really happening there. Again, you have that temptation with the reveal of all of these magnificent historic Marvel characters, there s this temptation to kind of become too segmented, and for every entrance to be doing something special and something different. And the more we worked on it and tried that actually, we saw that it just really wasn t working. It needed to be seen with much more of an overview and much more of a celebratory and promising sensibility, [rather than], “Here s this one and here s this one, and now this one.” The audience understands that. But the overriding emotion is, “Look what s happening. They re all coming, we re seeing them all, they re all coming back. They ve all come back to life.” So it wound up with much more of an overview. And then [we used a] new theme there because there was really nothing else that was gonna really take care of it. And it s one of those pieces where it s the same theme repeated a number of times, keys changing, getting bigger and more grand. And we knew that at the end of all this, we had to really set up the original Avengers theme after Cap delivers that amazing Avengers assemble line, which he almost whispers. Then we come in full bore with the original Avengers theme when the charge begins. So it took a while for us to find what would be the most satisfying approach. And I think we finally arrived at something that s working pretty well.Rotten Tomatoes: Do you have a favorite musical moment from Endgame?Silvestri: Well, I think that that almost falls into the category of which is your favorite child. It was interesting when I was early on working on the film. There’s the end of the film when Tony has left us and we have now maybe five or six minutes, with basically everyone who s been in the Marvel films attending the ceremony. That was a very challenging place, wondering what am I going to do for that. It needed to have a sense of reverence, a sense of gravity, yet it had to have a sense of beauty and promise and resolution. It was almost too terrifying to go there and work on it. I was working on the cue in the beginning of the film when Tony s stranded in space and finishes his message to Pepper. He puts his jacket on and he lies down, and there s just a very kind of simple, electronic, single instrument playing this theme that carries us from there, through Tony being put in the chair by Nebula. When I found that, I somehow knew that that was going to be the key to that amazing ceremony at the end of the film. And we never hear that again until the end of the film. But it was one of those things that was so great when I found it, to know that I don t have to be as terrified of the end of the movie now because I think I may have found a key in the very first reel. So that was very exciting to be sure.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Rotten Tomatoes: Before we go, I have to tell you: Even before I knew I was doing this interview, I re-watched Flight of the Navigator a few days ago.Silvestri: Wow! Haha!Rotten Tomatoes: It made me realize your theme was the first piece of music I connected with on an emotional level. I must’ve been 6 or 7. Thank you for that. Do you have any particular memories or stories from that movie?Silvestri: I remember I did that all electronically. And that I think was really driven by the budget for the the film. And I just have to say it s wonderful for you to say nice things about that, because every time I do a film I try to do the best I can. And I ve done a tremendous range of films and some people would say, “Well, that wasn t the best film you ever did,” and “Why did you do that?” and “Why did you do this film?” Clearly, Flight of the Navigator was a well-made film. But it was not a big budget film. It was very sweet, charming. I can only say I m trying to do the same job there as I was trying to do on Endgame, from the point of view of doing the best I can with what I m doing today.
