(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)This week, The Mandalorian gave fans of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe the same sort of buzz it gave Ahsoka Tano fans last week: the thrill of recognition. From using video game ideas to restoring the cool of a fan-favorite character, the episode gave the Star Wars galaxy back a lot of the texture it accrued in the 1990s, but lost when Disney bought the brand. Also, actor Temeura Morrison, writer Jon Favreau, and director Robert Rodriguez reminded us why Star Wars’ original wearer of Mandalorian armor exuded so much swagger. Now that Boba Fett is once again part of the story, let s dig into The Tragedy and speculate on what these EU callback may mean for the galaxy. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 6, “Chapter 14: The Tragedy.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.A Jedi Encounter Set Their Path(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Acting on a tip from Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) traveled to Corvus, where he and his child ward met Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson, pictured), a Force-user trained in the Jedi arts. Although she could not train the child — whose name, she informed the Mandalorian, is Grogu — she sent the pair to Tython, where the ruins of an ancient Jedi temple may allow Grogu to contact a Jedi capable of training him. With their business complete, Djarin and Grogu left Ahsoka to continue her search for Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn.A Tragedy Occurs at the Jedi Temple(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Arriving on Tython and reaching the temple ruins with remarkable haste, Djarin places Grogu on a central stone orb. At first, the child seems incapable of doing anything Jedi-like, but after the Mandalorian sees Slave I entering atmosphere, he notices Grogu has established contact with the temple and raised some sort of signal beam/ray shield. Unable to collect Grogu from it, he prepares for another fight.Descending into the nearby valley, he soon meets his apparent opponents: Boba Fett (Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Fennec reveals Fett saved her from death while Fett reveals well, not much about how he survived on the sands of Tatooine. The bounty hunter s greatest concern is the return of his armor and offers to protect Grogu in exchange. Djarin, still adhering to the Way of the Mandalore, believes Fett has lost his right to the armor as he has been unmasked. The point is academic, though, as Imperial Remnant troop carriers break atmosphere. Djarin, who took off his jetback during the exchange, runs back to the temple ruin to collect Grogu while Fennec and Fett get ready to fight the Imps.Despite their numbers, the Remnant stormtroopers are overwhelmed by Fennec s ease with a rifle and Fett s impressive skill with a Tusken gaffi stick. Djarin, meanwhile, finds he cannot push through the ray shield to get Grogru. Soon, he joins the fight while Fett sees an opportunity to collect his armor from the Razor Crest. And its a good thing he does as Djarin and Fennec are soon cornered by Imps, but Fett flies over head and uses nearly all of the tricks in his armor to inspire fear in the Imperial ranks. He also uses the rocket on his jetpack to destroy the troop carriers as they retreat.(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), observing the scene from his light cruiser in the upper atmosphere, sends down a turbolaser bolt to destroy the Razor Crest and a squad of Dark Troopers to collect the child. The maneuver is successful and Gideon, finally, has possession of Grogu and his Midi-chlorian-rich blood.Fett proves he is the rightful owner of the armor and a man of his word. Since he failed to protect the child, he offers his services in retrieving Grogu from the Empire. Fennec does likewise and the trio make their way to Nevarro where New Republic Marshal Cara Dune (Gina Carano) tells Djarn where he can find former Imperial sharpshooter Mayfeld (Bill Burr); a key part of the Mandalorian s rescue plan. Also, because the child has been abducted, it appears she will aid Djarin in springing Mayfeld from prison.Ghosts of the Expanded Universe(Photo by BioWare)From Tython to Fett to the Dark Troopers, this week s episode proved just how deep into Star Wars lore Favreau and his collaborators are willing to delve for story and action.Tython is the starting planet for Jedi Knights and Jedi Consulars in the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. Set thousands of years before the events of Chapter 14, it is still an active hub of the Jedi Order and — at least in that game — the group s ancestral homeworld. This conflicts with the Sequel Trilogy, which states the ocean world of Ahch-To is the original home of the Jedi, but there s room for inconsistency when characters are talking about events in antiquity. Clearly, both worlds felt the presence of the Jedi early in the Order s history. Also, the Tython seen here is a much sparser world than the one in the game, suggesting Favreau reserves the right to alter EU concepts to better fit his story.Nevertheless, the callbacks continue with the look of the temple ruin, which more than resembles the Trayus Core on Malachor V; the sanctum Darth Traya escapes to in the latter parts of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II — The Sith Lords. In that Sith shrine, she is able to tell the player s character, a Jedi in exile named Meetra Surik, about the far future. She even alludes to Boba Fett in her prognostications.(Photo by 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm)Fett himself, of course, was revived in the Expanded Universe. Despite his apparent death in Return of the Jedi, writer Tom Veitch and artist Cam Kennedy were quick to bring him back in Star Wars: Dark Empire. The comic book series would lead to plenty of post-Return adventures for the famous bounty hunter. But it is important to remember the EU was cursed with various levels of continuity and in the most important tier, the so-called G-Canon (for George Lucas), Fett was still being digested in the innards of the Sarlacc. It was important, therefore, for Favreau to declare on no uncertain terms that this is, indeed, Boba Fett standing before Din Djarin. In doing so, he restored a lot of the coolness the character lost over the years. Since his major scenes in the Original Trilogy see him failing against an partially trained Jedi and a mostly blind Han Solo, he began to look dopey when compared to Mandos like Kryze and Djarin. But now that we ve seen him be a capable fighter with nothing but a Gaffi stick, we re more than glad to see he survived the Pit of Carkoon.Maybe we ll even learn how he did it someday The Dark Troopers, meanwhile, bring elements of the first Star Wars first-person shooter into canon. Star Wars: Dark Forces was a revelation for fans upon its release in 1996 thanks to its Doom-like format and its nods to the larger Star Wars story. In it, mercenary (and future Jedi) Kyle Katarn stumbles into an Imperial plot to create a new battledroids and powered armor for an elite squad of troopers. Sadly, Dark Forces and its sequels — collectively known as the Jedi Knight series — were dumped from any sort of canonicity when Disney declared the EU a collection of legends. The ships Katarn used, the Moldy Crow and the Raven s Claw, remained part of the universe thanks to some tabletop games, but Kyle was lost. The presence of the Dark Troopers several years after the events of Dark Forces suggests Gideon s resources are far more vast than we ve been led to believe. They also make the Dark Trooper project an undisputed part of Star Wars history. All of which adds to the excitement of the episode, particularly for those whose interest in Star Wars was kept alive in the early-to-mid 1990s thanks to the first games and stories emerging from the EU.Expanded Questions(Photo by 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm)Of course, all of these EU elements returning leads to a number of questions about Star Wars history, the shape of things in the New Republic era, and other characters Djarin could meet.Is Kyle Katarn Back in the Picture? The appearance of the Dark Troopers leaves us wondering how much of Dark Forces is canon. Is there room again for Kyle Katarn? Favreau willingness to use EU ideas suggests he may appear — even if his part in recovering the Death Star plans has been erased from history. If so, he may be a capable teacher for Grogu. Then again, Star Wars: Jedi Knight — Dark Forces II gave players the option to make Kyle switch to the Dark Side. If he is back, his nature could be dubious. How Strong Is the New Republic s Hold on the Galaxy? Considering the Remant s freedom to invade an Inner Core world like Tython, the New Republic s grasp on the galaxy sure feels tenuous. This is largely in line with stories set around the same time in the EU, but it might be something worth exploring on the show; of course, the ambiguous political situation makes The Mandalorian’s ties to Lone Wolf and Cub that much stronger; that series is set in a time when regional daimyos exerted more control over feudal Japan. Nevertheless, Gideon s apparent might will requires a Republic response at some point. How Organized Is the Imperial Remnant? Boba Fett s declaration that The Empire is back suggests Gideon may have marshaled more military strength than we previously believed. Is it just a matter of Gideon knowing where Sheev Palpatine kept all of the secret projects? Or, by way of attrition, has Gideon become the heir to the Empire. If that s the case, is Thrawn on his side or is there still room for conflict within the Imps?Who Did Grogu Contact? Since the child ended the signal beam of his own accord — or because he was fatigued — did he contact a Jedi? And if so, who? The list of possible teachers is pretty slim. There is Luke Skywalker, of course, Kyle Katarn (if he s back), Ezra Bridger (if he s been rescued), and, perhaps, Jedi Master Yaddle (pictured above). This last option is the most intriguing. While she was killed in an Expanded Universe story, her continued existence is possible in the current history. Retiring from the Jedi Council (and any sort of public life) a number of years before the Clone Wars, she may have survived the Jedi Purge. Also, she is from the same species as Grogu. From a narrative standpoint, she would seem the most worthy to train him, at least in Djarin s mind, and the most convincing reason for Grogu and Djarin to part ways. Although, considering the playful scene at the beginning of Chapter 14, we seriously doubt the pair will ever split up.Well, once Djarin and his new band of outsiders rescue Grogu from the Imperial Remnant.Where Is Mara Jade? One last EU thought: the fan-favorite character from the Star Wars EU novels could emerge from the shadows thanks to all of these nods to the old continuity. She could easily be retconned as a Sith Inquisitor and serve as a mighty ally (or foe) for our heroes.Like this? This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Faces of Death, Indiana Jones 5, and Knives Out 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYKNIVES OUT SEQUEL ADDS FOUR BIG NAMES TO ITS CAST(Photo by JA, Jason Mendez, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Director Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars: The Last Jedi) cast an impressive ensemble for his 2019 mystery thriller Knives Out (Certified Fresh at 97%) which included Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shnnon, and Lakeith Stanfield, among others. For the two upcoming sequels, Johnson, producer Ram Bergman, and star Daniel Craig made a deal with Netflix that will land each of them a record-breaking 0 million. This week, Johnson proceeded to cast up Knives Out 2 with the first four stars to join Daniel Craig, and three of them are Marvel Studios alumni. The fun started on Monday when, Dave Bautista (Drax from Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy) became the first new cast member announced, in what is basically a Spectre (Fresh at 63%) reunion, since Bautista and Craig faced off against each other in that James Bond film. The next day, Bautista and Craig were joined by Edward Norton, who was Marvel Studios The Incredible Hulk (Fresh at 67%) (before Mark Ruffalo took over the role). Wednesday marked the third day in a row with a Knives Out 2 casting announcement, namely Janelle Monáe (Antebellum), who is the only non-Marvel alumni in this batch. Finally, on Thursday, the sequel s fifth cast member was announced as Kathryn Hahn, who is coming off a great role in the Disney+ series WandaVision (Fresh at 92%). We don t know the name of Hahn s character yet, but it would really be something if turns out to be Kathryn Hahn All Along. Production of Knives Out 2 is scheduled to start in Greece later this summer, 2021.Other Top Headlines1. REGINA KING TO DIRECT MONSTER COMIC BOOK MOVIE BITTER ROOT (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Academy Award winning actress Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk, HBO s Watchmen) recently made her directorial debut with the historical drama One Night in Miami (Certified Fresh at 98%), and this week, she signed on for another period piece, although the similarities largely end there. King will direct the comic book adaptation Bitter Root, based on the Image Comics title about a monster-hunting family who take on an invasion of supernatural forces during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. King will also be one of the producers of Bitter Root, along with her sister Reina and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) and his Proximity Media company. The other part of the production deal is Legendary Entertainment, which recently gave us Godzilla vs Kong and produced the DC Comics movies 300, 300: Rise of an Empire, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel, and Watchmen. On the acting front, Regina King also recently signed on to star in one of the three planned Shirley Chisholm biopics.2. PARASITE DIRECTOR BONG JOO-HO PLANNING ANIMATED UNDERWATER HORROR FILM (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho was the big winner at last year s Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film for Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%). We usually see big deals being made for Academy Award winners of that stripe, but Bong s victory lap in 2020 might have been slowed down significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic, which began spreading more widely right around that time last year. So this week s news might be coming a year later than it otherwise should have, but we can now report that Bong Joon-Ho is planning an animated action/horror film about deep sea creatures. This project isn t expected to be Bong s next film as director (probably due to the extended production times of animated features), which will instead be an English-language drama based on an undisclosed true event from 2016. As if those two projects won t keep Bong Joon-Ho busy enough, he is also producing an upcoming Parasite series for HBO Max.3. IDRIS ELBA TO STAY FROSTY IN EXTRACTION DIRECTOR S CHRISTMAS ACTION MOVIE (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)There was a time (basically the 20th century) when spec script sales were frequent and lucrative, but they have decreased in relevance in recent years, possibly because of the increase in license deals, remakes, and comic book adaptations. Spec script deals do, however, still happen occasionally, and this week screenwriter Tyler Marcesa sold his screenplay Stay Frosty to Warner Bros. in a deal worth more than a million dollars. This wasn t Marcesa s first screenplay sale, but thus far, none of his projects have been produced yet. Idris Elba is attached to star in the action movie Stay Frosty as a man who survives getting shot in the head and who then has to figure out why an assassin tried to kill him, all the while also trying to get home to his son for Christmas. So, it s a John Wick-style action movie that also has Christmas-movie elements, a la Die Hard. Stay Frosty will be directed by Sam Hargrave, a former Marvel Studios stunt coordinator who made his directorial feature film debut last year with Extraction (Fresh at 67%).4. BLACK PANTHER AND LOGAN CO-STARS JOIN INDIANA JONES 5(Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection, FOX via Getty Images)As of this summer, it will be 13 years since the 2008 release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Certified Fresh at 78%), but Lucasfilm is finally preparing to film another installment we re currently calling Indiana Jones 5. The star will obviously be Harrison Ford (who will turn 80 sixteen days before Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to come out on July 29, 2022), and we ve also recently heard about the casting of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Thomas Kretchmann. This week, director James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma, Ford v Ferrari) cast two more for Indiana Jones 5, including the actor who played the villain Donald Pierce in his Wolverine movie Logan (Certified Fresh at 93%), Boyd Holbrook. The other new cast member is Shaunette Renée Wilson, who played one of the Dora Milaje warriors in Black Panther. We don t know anything about the characters Holbrook or Wilson will be playing, partly because we also don t know anything about the premise, like, at all, at this point.5. 21 JUMP STREET DIRECTORS TO DEPICT THE EARLY STAGES OF COVID-19 IN THE PREMONITION (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are probably best known for their various animated projects they directed (Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie) or produced (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs The Machines), but they also directed two live-action films with 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street. What all of those movies have in common is that they re pretty light in tone, but this week, Lord and Miller are branching into more serious material with The Premonition, based on the recent book by journalist Michael Lewis. The Premonition tells the true story of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and the experts who attempted to warn the world. The film is expected to focus on three characters: a biochemist, a public health worker, and a White House government worker. It s not yet known if some of the more famous figures working in the White House in 2019 and 2020 will also have roles in The Premonition, the tone of which is being compared to All the President s Men (Certified Fresh at 94%). In related news, Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is also developing an untitled thriller set during the COVID-19 pandemic.6. EUGENIO DERBEZ REMAKE OF FRENCH HIT THE VALET TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics courtesy Everett Collection)Hollywood remakes of foreign-language hits are nothing new, and this week we got news of another. In this case, the original film is the French comedy hit The Valet (La Doublure, Fresh at 70%),  about a wealthy executive who hires a parking valet to pose as his mistress s lover in order to prevent his wife from finding out about his affair. Eugenio Derbez (Overboard, Instructions Not Included) is already set to star in the remake as the valet, who, in a slight variation on the original, is hired by a movie star played by Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) to pose as her lover to cover up her relationship with a married man. The cast was filled out this week by Max Greenfield (TV s The Neighborhood, New Girl), Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad), Marisol Nichols (Riverdale, Spiral), and Mexican star Carmen Salinas. This remake of The Valet will be directed by Richard Wong (Come As You Are, Certified Fresh at 95%), and the original was directed by Francis Veber, whose French films have frequently been remade in English, including The Birdcage, The Toy, and Dinner for Schmucks.7. DAVID TENNANT AND EMILIA CLARKE TO VOICE ANIMATED DISCWORLD MOVIE  (Photo by Abel Fermin, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Discworld is a popular series of over 40 fantasy novels by author Terry Pratchett, but so far, it has eluded adaptation. That may soon change, as the 28th book in the series, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, is about to be adapted as an animated film titled simply The Amazing Maurice. David Tennant (Doctor Who), who also starred in the Terry Pratchett series Good Omens, will voice the title character, and other roles will be voiced by Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Hugh Laurie (TV s House), Rob Brydon (The Trip), Gemma Arterton, Hugh Bonneville, Himesh Patel, and David Thewlis. The Amazing Maurice tells the story of a cat and his gang of talking rats who develop a scheme to fool humans and take their money. It s currently planned for release in the U.K. in 2022, but an American release is still also possible (if any U.S. distributor steps up to make such a deal).8. RUSSELL CROWE TO SHOW OFF HIS POKER FACE PLAYING POKER (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)The theatrical box office charts were obviously impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic this past year, but there were still movies that saw release, such as the Russell Crowe drama Unhinged (Rotten at 48%). Released in August, Unhinged debuted at #2, ascended to #1, and spent over 10 weeks in the top five. Again, the success of Unhinged was aided by diminished competition, but it also shows that despite a deadly virus, there were millions of people who wanted to see a Russell Crowe movie in theaters, so by that standard, he is definitely still a movie star. Crowe recently wrapped filming of Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and this week, he signed on to star in a gambling drama called Poker Face, which is about exactly what it sounds like. Crowe will play a tech billionaire who brings his childhood friends together at his Miami estate for some high stakes poker. Poker Face will be directed by Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, Homefront, Kiss the Girls).9. CONTROVERSIAL 1980s VIDEO NASTY FACES OF DEATH TO BE REBOOTED   (Photo by Aquarius Releasing)The Internet has been an active element in how fans track movies for over 20 years now, so it s easy to forget that there was a time when fans were basically challenged to believe whatever they were told by a filmmaker. In the early 1980s, as the home video market was taking off, many horror fans discovered a title called Faces of Death (and its sequels), which purported to depict actual footage of various gruesome deaths (most of which were actually faked, although some weren t). Faces of Death seems, in that way, such an artifact of its own era, that it would resist any attempt at a reboot or a remake, but that is apparently exactly what is now planned by Legendary Entertainment (Godzilla vs Kong, The Dark Knight). What is being described as a 21st century makeover of Faces of Death is being developed by filmmakers Isa Mazzei and Danield Goldhaber, the team behind 2018 s Cam (Certified Fresh at 98%). Rather than a documentary -style format, the new Faces of Death will reportedly revolve around a female moderator of a YouTube-like website whose job is to weed out offensive and violent content and who herself is recovering from a serious trauma, who stumbles across a group that is re-creating the murders from the original film. The producers behind this Faces of Death reboot are also developing the Buck Rogers reboot.10. ENOLA HOLMES 2 IS OFFICIALLY IN THE WORKS(Photo by Legendary)Details are a mystery, appropriately enough, but Netflix has offered a very pretty Twitter tease about a follow-up to Enola Holmes, the 2020 movie that stars Millie Bobby Brown as the equally curious sister of Sherlock Holmes. The film, which was originally planned as a theatrical release, moved to Netflix when the streaming service picked up the distribution rights last year during the pandemic. Enola Holmes 2 will start out as a Netflix jam, with Stranger Things star Brown returning for the sequel, along with Henry Cavill, director Harry Bradbeer, and screenwriter Jack Thorne. Netflix is offering up no other facts, but since more than 75 million households watched the first movie when it premiered last September, that surely won’t deter fans from trying to scope them out. A good place to start: The Enola Holmes Mysteries, author Nancy Springer’s book series on which the movies are based. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

(Photo by © NEON)It s sometimes easy to forget in the blur of manic performances that have defined Nicolas Cage s work in the last decade – the chainsaw-wielding Red in Mandy, his wide-eyed murderous father in Mom and Dad, and other very Nic Cage roles that seem to come around every few months – that his is a career of chapters, each of which might singularly define a lesser performer, and that Wild Nic is just the latest. The star emerged in the 1980s as an edgy standout in zeitgest-capturing favorites (Rumble Fish, Peggy Sue Got Married), blossomed into romantic lead (Moonstruck) and A-list Oscar winner (Leaving Las Vegas), and crushed the box office a few times as an unlikely action hero in a string of Bruckheimer-produced 90s favorites. Then he went and recovered the Declaration of Independence as an Indiana Jones type in the National Treasure movies.Even within these Nic Cage eras, though, he always managed a few surprises. Consider his vanity-be-damned dual-role as the Kaufman brothers in Adaptation, for which he was nominated for an Oscar during a seeming career slump; or his delightfully unhinged performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans, a turn that would set the tone for our current Nic Cage chapter but which, at the time, was a shock to the system and a turn of the page, even if it was some time coming.Still, nothing in Cage s career is as surprising, perhaps, as the new Certified Fresh drama, Pig. Here, Cage plays Rob, a onetime big-name chef who now lives as a recluse in the wilds of Oregon with his best friend, a foraging pig who scouts for the truffles that are his owner/buddy s sole source of income. When the pig is stolen during a violent break-in at Rob s cabin, expectations are set for a John Wick-style revenge tale – and another very Nic Cage performance – but writer/director Michael Sarnoski has other things on his mind. And so does Cage. What follows is a somber, moving, and at times wryly funny tale about a man who descends into Portland s seedy underground foodie world (surprisingly violent), single-mindedly focused on retrieving the one thing in life he deeply loves. It is anchored by a quiet and deeply affecting performance from Cage, one that critics are calling a revelation and among the best work of his career. The movie is a marker for Cage, too, who told Rotten Tomatoes that Pig came around at just the right time, both in terms of getting back to his roots in more dramatic, soberer fare – though he does get to utter the line I don t f k my pig! – and in reflecting events and developments in his real life. I was feeling lost, Cage told us. I was feeling the need for isolation. I was feeling, Oh, I m no longer invited in Hollywood. Nor do I want to be invited in Hollywood. I have no interest in going back. I like making quiet little dramas. This is what I m interested in. Ahead of the movie s release in theaters, Cage spoke to us about this step away from his wild-man roles, what Pablo Picasso has to do with it, and a passion he shares with his latest character: good food and bold flavors.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: This movie has a bit of a strange conceit – the log line for this film is about a revenge-seeking truffle hunter! What was the pitch to you for the project when they were trying to get you on board? What was the thing that sold you on this story?Nicolas Cage: Well, I can tell you “revenge” never came into the equation for me. I read the script, Michael [Sarnoski]’s script, and I immediately responded to it more as a kind of cinematic haiku, a poem, really, a meditation on loss and a character analysis of a person who had lost great love. I also felt that I was at a point in my own life experience, aggregate collection of memories and dreams and experiences, that enabled me to respond to Rob in such a way where I felt that nothing had to be forced, that I felt I understood Rob.In fact, I told Michael over lunch that when I read his script I had a very evocative dream of my cat and something horrible happening to my cat, Merlin, who is one of my best friends. The relationship that you can have with our animal brothers and sisters, it s so much closer in some ways, so much more profound, because it s not corrupted by the noise of people and what that can harbor in terms of jealousies and angers. It s just unconditional love. So, I felt that those relationships – my relationship with my cat, my dog, who s no longer with us – those are things that I could put into this performance and it s a perfect time for it. When we all agreed to make the movie, we hadn t been hit by the pandemic yet, but I think we ve all gotten closer, even still, to our animal family, because we relied on them so heavily to get through that.(Photo by © NEON)Rotten Tomatoes: How old is Merlin, by the way? And was he helpful during the pandemic?Cage: Merlin is two years old. Very, yeah. I relied on him quite a bit. He s very affectionate, a Maine Coon cat. Really kind of like another son in some ways.Rotten Tomatoes: What was your relationship like with the pig, or pigs, you were working with in this film? How was it working with them?Cage: There was one pig. Her name was Brandy. Like many of us, she was very payment-oriented. She wasn t really interested in people. If they wanted to get a soulful look in her eyes, they would show her a bit of carrot off camera; or if they needed her to go to a certain mark, they would put some food down. But I think that relationship was really developed with the eye of Michael Sarnoski and our director of photography. They figured out ways of photographing Brandy and Rob so that the relationship never lapsed into schmaltz or Hallmark-card sappiness. It was just a quiet witnessing of these two in the wilderness. I think that made it more heartfelt in some ways, but it was a lot to do with getting her in the right position with the food, and also photographing it in the right manner.Rotten Tomatoes: You mentioned “soulful” and that I think is a very great word for this film and for your performance, and a lot of people have been saying this is a different Nicolas cCage than we ve seen in a while. The last film I saw of you in was Prisoners of Ghostland and then I was re-watching Mandy last night. They’re very different from Pig, but it does feel, to me at least as a viewer, that there is a connection between Robin as a character and someone like Red [Cage’s character in Mandy], who also has tried to escape the world and has that peace disrupted. Do you think that Robin really is so different from some of the characters you ve been playing lately? Or is there a connection?Cage: I mean, he s certainly different in the regard that he s not motivated by revenge, but I do share that observation, that he s similar to Red in that he s dealing with tremendous loss, and loss of love, and the feelings that can evoke. I think what people in the media may be struggling with is that I have made it almost a mission of sorts to go into what I sometimes call a Western Kabuki style of film performance, almost an operatic style of film performance – by design. I mean, this was always very carefully and methodically choreographed and though-out, both vocally and dance-wise in terms of movement. I wanted to do that because I felt that we had gotten caught in a trap of naturalism as a style. Not that I m Picasso, I m not saying that, but I remember one conversation that I had with my father, where I was very tripped out by Picasso s portraits that seemed so abstract with people having eyes on the same side of their face. Like, what is this? I said, Well, can he also do photo realistic drawing? and dad said, Absolutely. He broke free. I always thought that what you can do in one art form, maybe you can do in another, and why not take a chance and attempt some sort of breaking-free with film performance? But somewhere along the way, I think I needed to remind myself – and, in fact, I think I needed to remind certain folks in critical response – that it wasn t the only brush I painted with. I mean, I think Joe is a movie that I made not long ago that was as close to my true self as I could get in terms of what was important to him.(Photo by © NEON)Certainly, with Rob in Pig, I wanted to get back to a kind of a quiet, meditative, internalized performance. It was not difficult. It was something that I felt I had the life experience for and the memories and the dreams, if you will, to portray without forcing it. So when I read Michael s script, it was exactly the right material at the right time for what I was trying to convey. I was feeling lost. I was feeling the need for isolation. I was feeling, Oh, I m no longer invited in Hollywood. Nor do I want to be invited in Hollywood. I have no interest in going back. I like making quiet little dramas. This is what I m interested in. But I can see where it would be shocking to the folks that remember me making five Jerry Bruckheimer movies back-to-back, which at that time was the challenge, in my opinion – no one thought I should do an adventure film or that I even had the wherewithal to do an adventure film, but I had grown up on Bronson and Eastwood and Connery, and I thought, Well, that would be fun to at least try. It s kind of a situation of wanting to stay interested and also stay challenged. At this moment, what interests me is getting back to my roots, which is quiet dramas.Rotten Tomatoes: The film has a lot to say about food, different philosophies towards food, Robin s passion, and everything just looks beautiful that we get to see you cook – or your stand-in cooks make – in the movie. Are you a cook in your own time? And do you have a specialty?Cage:  I want to go on record: I didn t have any stand-in cooks. I can t replace my hands. If I see someone else s hand in front of my hand, I go, No, no, no. That takes me out of the movie. I had two excellent teachers, Chef Chris and Chef Rucker from Le Pigeon. Chef Chris taught me the mushroom tart, or pie, and then I learned the squab blueberry dish from Le Pigeon.Food has always been important to me. Food is what I like to spend my money on. Food, to me, comes first. I think that the chefs today can do amazing things in the world of art, because without food, then nothing else really matters: Food, and then I can enjoy music and then I can enjoy painting and then I can enjoy a great cinema and then I can meditate or then I can write a poem. Whatever it is, food comes first.I have tremendous respect for these people and I also understand the pressures that go into the world, the epicurean world. Because if you think about this art form – and it is an art – that s the only one where they re actually ingesting it physically into their body as an audience, or as a client, or as a foodie, or whatever you want to call it. There s tremendous pressure and risk with that. You don t want them to get sick. You want them to have a good experience. Everything matters. The ambience matters, the bread matters, everything. So it s a high-pressure job and I wanted to convey the regard and the reverence that I have for what they do.(Photo by © NEON)Rotten Tomatoes: When you re home, are you someone who has a go-to dish that you can whip up in five minutes?Cage: If you re asking me, am I a chef, I wouldn t put myself at that level, but I can cook. I make a pretty good seafood arrabbiata pasta. I am passionate about putting different tastes together. I like Japanese food, I like Italian, and Chinese is probably the most complex. I think the continent of Asia, probably, in my opinion, has the greatest and most complex foods of the world. But I remember I once imagined a sweet shrimp or an ebi and I went to my sushi chef and I said, Could you slice the sweet shrimp open and then could you put the uni inside the ebi and then can you put it on less rice, please, and then wrap it with the seaweed? I had that taste in my mind and it was so beautiful when I got it.So, I do like to put tastes together. I remember Joel Robuchon had something that was a Wow. He put coffee grinds with uni frappe. I mean, who thinks to do that? Who thinks to put coffee and sea urchin together? It was one of the most amazing taste sensations I ve ever had. So, yeah, I m very interested in that world and I do like to play around.I do Eggs Diablo – I really spice up my fried eggs over easy and I just kick in a lot of chili and red chili pepper flakes and some tomato paste. It s a beautiful little dish that I like to make for breakfast, but yeah, I enjoy it.The secret to great cooking for me is that you have to have respect for the actual ingredients. Sometimes these chefs get lost in overdoing it with the complexity of the sauce, because they re trying to mask what s wrong with the actual source, what s wrong with the fish. But if you get a great piece of fish, treat it with respect. Just light olive oil, some garlic, some sea salt, bingo. Trip to the moon, man.Rotten Tomatoes: I need to come to your place. Just finally, they re giving me the wrap, but for your upcoming Joe Exotic series, are we going to get the Kabuki-style performance? How extreme are we going there?Cage: That s not going to be happening, I m not playing Joe Exotic. We had two really excellent scripts, but I think I don t know. I think somewhere along the way, the studio felt that that was a fad that had come and gone and that it was a thing of the past. Frankly, I for one am okay with it because I have other things I want to explore and other characters I want to play.I was a bit trepidatious about going into the television universe, too. One of the things I really love about independent filmmaking is that I can get in and I can get out. If there s one problem in the chain of filmmakers, I know I ve got just four more weeks to go; but a TV character, if there s a problem and you re stuck on location for six months, that does seem a little terrifying to me.Pig is in theaters from Friday July 16, 2021.On an Apple device? When he did finally debut in theaters, under the guidance of Sam Raimi, he not only kicked off one of the most successful superhero franchises ever, but also helped lay the groundwork for the massive paradigm shift in Hollywood that would eventually bring us the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, for starters. Of course, Sony Pictures efforts to retain the rights to the character have famously resulted in two reboots and a parallel animated series, but the results overall have been rather spectacular. Raimi s original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the MCU-related films with Tom Holland in the role, and the animated Into the Spider-Verse have all largely been critically acclaimed money-makers, and even the first of Andrew Garfield s two outings as the famous wallcrawler is generally well regarded. Spidey may be a late bloomer compared to his DC counterparts, but he s been the most consistent solo hero of them all.5. Back to the Future(Photo by Universal Pictures)Average Tomatometer Score/Rank: 78% (12th)Average Audience Score/Rank: 85.7% (4th)Average Domestic Box Office/Rank: 8,209,623 (16th)Films: Back to the Future, Back to the Future Part II,
