电玩街采用百度引擎9(Baidu 7)(Photo by Everett Collection)Music movies are having a moment right now. In 2018, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga lit radio waves and theaters ablaze with the third remake of A Star is Born; that same year, Bohemian Rhapsody earned four Academy Awards; and last year, Renée Zellweger took home the Best Actress Oscar for playing Judy Garland in a biopic. Ma Rainey s Black Bottom is a strong contender for a few Oscars in a couple of weeks, we re getting a film about Aretha Franklin later this year, and dramas about Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, and Peggy Lee among others  are all in the works.But 20 years ago today, before the world was clamoring for biopics, musicals, and films about musicians, a wild satire based on a comic book from the 60s and cartoon series from the 70s was released in theaters, and it failed, both critically and commercially. That film was Josie and the Pussycats, and despite its 53% Tomatometer score and its box office failures, it s one that deserves to be celebrated. So put on your cat ear headphones and stick a DuJour CD in your Discman, because in honor of the 20th anniversary of Josie and the Pussycats, we’re breaking down the reasons why it should be recognized as one of the most iconic music films of the 21st century.It s a Time Capsule That Gets Better with AgeRemember a time before digital music and streaming services? A time when you had to watch MTV to see your favorite artists? A time when AOL was one of the biggest brands in the world? That s the time of Josie and the Pussycats. If ever there was a movie that screamed early-2000s, it s this one. Boy bands, rampant consumerism, TRL, Breckin Meyer  you really get everything you could want out of a Y2K-era satire of pop culture, and despite being so quintessentially of its time, the film only gets better with age.For one thing, Josie and the Pussycats is aggressively overt with its product placement even Mac and Me is tame by comparison  but unlike most other films, its corporate promotion is more world building than brand endorsement. A few years ago, writer-director Deborah Kaplan stated, “We didn’t take a dime from any of those people… They had to be in on the joke and let us use their logos.” Which, looking back, is hilarious, especially when you now spy an ad for Nokia cellphones, a reference to MovieFone, or a wall of AOL logos. The same goes for seeing the computer screen of a live-streamed Pussycats concert, a line of fans waiting to buy the hottest CD, or Total Request Live and its host Carson Daly, who at the time was the real-life boyfriend of Tara Reid, who plays Melody in the film (isn t that just the most late- 90s thing ever?).As more and more of these companies, characters, and cultural touchstones fall by the wayside, the satire of Josie and the Pussycats only gets sharper. The Record Industry Satire Is Spot OnWe all know how most music films work; there s an artist or a band who does a small gig/has a hit song/sings Edith Piaf in a bar, they get noticed by someone important, and soon enough, due to their incredible talent, they re at the top of the charts playing sold-out shows. But one major aspect of the music industry that rarely gets any play is the antagonistic record labels who exploit artists talents. In Josie and the Pussycats, MegaRecords executive Wyatt Frame (played by Alan Cumming) first stumbles across the struggling band when he nearly hits them with his car. When he notices that Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook) and the Pussycats (Rosario Dawson s Valerie and Tara Reid s Melody) have the look and sound of a hit band, he makes them an irresistible offer, flies them from Riverdale to the big city, nurtures them, and introduces them to the harmless world of music superstardom, leading to a long and lucrative partnership that benefits everyone.Except that s not what happens at all, because Josie and the Pussycats isn t just a simple, inspirational tale about overcoming obstacles with talent and perseverance, it s a critique of the way the musical industrial complex manufactures stars, uses them to promote fashion/toys/products/the military/etc., and then spits them back out when they ve found the next band du jour.MegaRecords CEO Fiona, played by Parker Posey, aims to accomplish this by brainwashing the band s fans through subliminal messages hidden in their recordings. What better way to manipulate listeners into loving Matt Damon and wearing orange sweaters? Of course, it s also pretty helpful in making Josie and the Pussycats an overnight sensation or, you know, attempting to break them up so Josie can fly solo and become a pop idol whose music will, in turn, be used to create a generation of mindless consumers. We all know how vile the industry can be, and while Josie and the Pussycats is admittedly a little silly and over-the-top, there s a lot of truth hidden behind the excess, and the record execs played by Cumming and Posey aren t so many shades darker than their real-life counterparts. The Music Is OutstandingThe one thing a music movie has to have is killer music, and Josie and the Pussycats has that in spades. With tracks written by 12-time Grammy winner Babyface, the late, great, EGOT-nominated cinematic earworm maestro Adam Schlesinger, Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go s, and Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, just to name a few, and produced by Babyface and Schlesinger with vocals performed by Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo, this film and its soundtrack album are filled with bangers.Distinctly early-2000s bangers, sure, but bangers nonetheless. From the first power chords and hits of the hi-hat on the soundtrack album s opening song, 3 Small Words, the music bursts with a professionalism far beyond what you might expect. But the subsequent lyrics “I m a punk rock prom queen” shock you back into remembering that this is actually a song from Josie and the Pussycats. This song and “You re a Star” evoke pop punk princess Avril Lavigne a full year before her first album and subsequent stardom, and the power chord-laden “Shapeshifter” would fit great on any Good Charlotte album. At the same time, this film is perfectly situated in the zenith of the Backstreet Boys/NSYNC era, and the film s ill-fated boy band, DuJour, hits all those same notes just as hard in DuJour Around the World and Backdoor Lover, with the latter being deployed in the film with an over-the-top but also completely spot-on music video.Despite being a send-up of the music industry, the songs are so incredibly earnest and the musicianship is so well done that the music stands on it own.People noticed, too. Despite the film s disappointing box office run, the soundtrack album went certified Gold and hit the Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard chart. In the subsequent years, there have been multiple vinyl re-releases of the soundtrack, including one that dropped behind a 2017 show that had more fans than were at the film s climactic concert, proving people are still clamoring for Pussycats songs 20 years later. If you ask me, “Pretend to be Nice” ranks right up there with the best movie songs from the past 20 years, and that includes Lose Yourself, Let It Go, and Shallow. It Paved the Way for the Archie-Verse (Photo by Art Streiber/The CW)In 2001, nobody really cared what drama was happening in Riverdale or which witches were living in Greendale, but now the Archie Comics extended universe, as it were, is a cultural phenomenon. And it became one because these shows follow a template set by Josie and the Pussycats. With its PG-13 content and tongue-in-cheek approach to the original content, this film is a stark departure from the family-friendly Melissa Joan Hart-led Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom and the Scooby-Doo knockoff cartoon series. Josie and the Pussycats instead lives in a world of its own, a hyper-realized pastiche of pop culture, comic book visuals, satire, throwback allusions, and darker-than-expected drama that somehow works.Though it draws inspiration from the old comic book series of the same name, it has been dragged into the 21st century and thrust into a dramatic new contemporary world complete with all the problems that tweens, teens, and young people face these days. Now, you ll find a similar sensibility in current hit Archie Comics shows like Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina that serve as spiritual and narrative successors to Josie and the Pussycats. With Riverdale renewed for at least two more seasons and another spin-off in development, Archie Comics won t be going anyway any time soon, and Josie and the Pussycats was the catalyst for it all.Josie and the Pussycats was released in theaters on April 11, 2001.On an Apple device? 3. 激战团竞模式
For 2021, DC FanDome was a nearly four-hour livestream updating fans on the latest DC films, TV series, comics projects, and video games. Even just watching it for the film and TV content was a task worthy of Earth’s Mightiest Mortal, and categorizing the announcements is the sort of thing you might set Brainiac 5 to do. Nevertheless, we tried to live up to Shazam and Brainy, watching all of it and compiling everything related to film and television at DC FanDome 2021 from the look of Blue Beetle’s costume to Ace the Bat-Hound’s drinking habits. To say there is a lot of DC Entertainment material on the horizon is an understatement. Just take a look at what we learned:DC’s Film Roster Is Amazing: The Flash, Black Adam, And The Batman (Oh My!)DC Entertainment made a big push with its feature film slate this time around. With two films shooting, one completing production, and two in pre-production, there was a lot to talk about even if only The Batman had a proper trailer to unveil during the event.FanDome began with a look at Black Adam, featuring a scene of the title character (played by Dwayne Johnson) being awakened from millennia of slumber by archeologist Adrianna Tomaz (Sarah Shahi). Of course, her team of explorers came with an armed detachment, so bullets start flying and Adam calls down the lightning. Literally. Combined with some behind-the-scenes footage, it at least confirms that the film – in development for over a decade – will actually come out next year.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also offered some behind-the-scenes footage and a first-look at Black Manta’s (Yahya Abdul-Manteen II) upgraded costume. Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a black variant of Arthur’s (Jason Momoa) classic costume. Shazam: Fury of the Gods also unveiled a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel with co-star Asher Angel confirming the end of principal photography. The film sees Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu playing goddesses arriving in Philadelphia to tangle with the Shazam Family. It s due out in 2023.(Photo by DC)Over on the HBO Max side of things, the principal creatives and stars of Batgirl and Blue Beetle offered the briefest of teases, including design art of the title characters’ respective costumes and a broad sense of what the films will be. Batgirl star Leslie Grace said the character is a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined… She’s sincere and wants to prove herself.” Co-director Adil El Arbi also confirmed the character will have red hair and use a cowl as part of her outfit (some recent Batgirl costumes favor goggles instead).“It’s going to be crazy, but it also has feelings,” Blue Beetle screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer said of the project. “It contains all that’s great about Blue Beetle.” Things like the scarab, Jaime Rodriguez’s (Xolo Maridueña) costume, and his family were referenced as key elements Dunnet-Alcocer and director Angel Manuel Soto wanted to bring to the screen. “He’s a Mexican-American kid who wants to be a part of this world, but he’s hitting the same obstacles a lot of us face,” the screenwriter said. He also added that the closeness of family is part of what sets him apart” from other superheroes – noting he has no way of keeping his suit or powers a secret from his parents.(Photo by DC)And as for the suit? “I know for a fact we have the best suit, and I haven’t seen it yet,” Maridueña said. There is one animated feature on the roster, DC League of Superpets, which sees Johnson giving voice to Krypto the Superdog while Kevin Hart voices Ace the Bat-Hound. In a brief clip, Ace can be seen, well, relieving himself while Krypto looks on in dismay. The film will also feature the voices of Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves. It is set for release on May 20, 2022.(Photo by DC)But perhaps the most impactful presentation outside of The Batman trailer was the first-look at The Flash. The long-in-development film which has missed half-a-dozen release dates at this point – genuinely looks amazing from the footage director Andy Muschietti compiled for FanDome. For one thing, Barry’s (Ezra Miller) new suit(s) looks incredible, and the teases of Supergirl (Sasha Calle), Batman (Micheal Keaton), and a second Flash (also Miller) provided some of the best moments of the whole four-hour event. Capping it off: a shot of Barry examining the Batmobile as it hides under a tarp.Curiously, though, director Patty Jenkins offered no updates on Wonder Woman 3 while chatting with Lynda Carter about the character s 80th anniversary, other than to reconfirm she is working on it.HBO Max Is The New Center Of The DC MultiverseIf there’s one thing this year’s FanDome made clear, it is that HBO Max is the new hubworld for DC’s expansive multiverse. Beyond Batgirl and Blue Beetle’s eventual debuts on the service, Pennyworth – previously an Epix exclusive – will be moving to Max for its third season late in 2022. The previous two seasons will become available to subscribers early next year.Additionally, most of the DC Universe orphans Max adopted  Titans, Doom Patrol, and Harley Quinn  will return for subsequent seasons next year with fourth seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol confirmed at the event. Harley Quinn will return “sometime in 2022,” according to Harley (Kaley Cuoco) herself. The last of the rescued DC Universe shows, Young Justice, debuted two episodes of its fourth season (subtitled “Phantoms ) on Max immediately after FanDome concluded. If all of those shows weren’t enough, Peacemaker’s premiere date was also announced during FanDome: January 13, 2022. Creator James Gunn also unveiled a teaser trailer which suggests Peacemaker (John Cena) may actually grow a little on his next adventure. That said, the star said the hardest part of playing the character is “becoming a super a hole. I’m usually a regular a hole.” Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five, extending his time in the DC Multiverse. In fact, Cena expressed a wish to continue playing Peacemaker in subsequent seasons, which may mean more of Gunn’s sensibility in the future.Although HBO Max’s focus is on the DC superheroes, it will also be the home of DMZ, a four-part limited series based on a comic published by DC Comics now-defunct Vertigo imprint. Ava DuVernay directs Roberto Patino’s adaptation of the book, which stars Rosario Dawson as an outsider who may tip the scales in the US’s second civil war.But for all the hour-long live action DC shows calling HBO Max home, Green Lantern was conspicuously absent from FanDome. The program, from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, is set to star Jeremy Irvine as Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and Finn Wittrock as 1980s fan-favorite Guy Gardner and sees the characters in their respective time periods facing social issues and weird space threats. Also absent: Berlanti’s Strange Adventures anthology series, first announced at HBO Max’s initial public unveiling, and any mention of J.J. Abrams’ live-action projects.Batman: The Animated Series Is Getting A Spiritual Successor(Photo by Everett Collection)One project Abrams did promote, though, is the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader. Produced and developed by Abrams, Batman: The Animated Series’ Bruce Timm, long time DC animation executive producer James Tucker, and The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series will go back to what Timm called the “original principles” of Batman: TAS with fewer broadcast restrictions. Set in the early days of Batman’s war on crime, it will feature a version of the character who uses Bruce Wayne as a mask to hide his activities as the Caped Crusader.“It’s just Batman,” added Reeves. “No Justice League.”And because the series takes place so early on in his career, animated Batman audiences will see him in a lower-tech situation than usual. According to Tucker, “We find him discovering these things.” That means viewers may see several iterations of the Batmobile and, quite possibly, the trial-and-error involved in creating Batarangs. Tucker added that as the series begins, no one trusts the Batman and vice-versa. He also teased that some of the Dark Knight’s traditional relationships may not form. “Nothing is assumed in this series,” he said.Reeves and Timm agreed the series will lean heavily in to the 1940s noir style, but the characters will be more modern in terms of inclusivity. Timm also added that the program will be, overall “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series.” It is unclear when the series will debut, but it will be available on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max.Caped Crusdaer isn’t the only word on DC animation, though, with an HBO Max Superman animated series, My Adventures with Superman, in production, the preschool-targeted Batwheels preparing for release, the currently running Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and a stellar upcoming lineup in the dependable DC Animated Movie direct-to-video range.Indeed, DC FanDome was the occasion to debut a trailer for Catwoman: Hunted, an upcoming DC Animated Movie featuring Elizabeth Gillies as Catwoman and Stephanie Beatriz as Batwoman. The pair must team up to take down the organization known as Leviathan in a stylish, anime take on the characters. Other DC Animated Movies set for release in 2022 include Green Lantern: Beware My Powers, Battle of the Super Sons, and a compilation of the 2022 DC Showcase shorts headlined by Constantine: The House of Mystery. Matt Ryan will, of course, reprise his role as magician and con man John Constantine. Before all of that, though, is the release of Injustice, a DC Animated Movie based on the video game and comic book of the same name. During FanDome, a clip was released featuring Joker’s (Kevin Pollak) “masterpiece” – a brutal act of violence which sets Superman (voiced by Justin Hartley) on a dark path. The scene is surprisingly grim and offers those less familiar with the DC Universe Animated line an idea of the sorts of films available. Injustice debuts on home video platforms this Tuesday.Gwendoline Christie Leans Into The Bowie Look For Sandman’s LuciferAlthough not part of the HBO Max lineup, The Sandman received a little recognition via the debut of Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer in a first-look photo. The image recalls the Bowie-esque appearance the Prince of Darkness assumed in his first Sandman comic book appearance. Its unclear if Christie will keep the look in subsequent appearances or evolve like her comic book counterpart. Curiously, though, Lucifer’s initial androgyny gave way to a more masculine countenance as The Sandman’s story wore on. Perhaps that will also be part of the changes writer Neil Gaiman and his collaborators have in mind for the adaptation of his comic book.Shortly after the Lucifer reveal, Gaiman took to Twitter to clarify that the series will debut on Netflix sometime in 2022. Initial messaging about the series suggested it could launch in late 2021, leading to some confusion and Gaiman’s exasperation in the tweet.DC’s other Netflix-based show, Sweet Tooth, was represented by star Christian Convery answering fan questions. The program, already renewed for a second season, will also remain on Netflix.Barry Will Finally Get Gold Boots On The Flash TV SeriesIn one of the earliest announcements of the event, The Flash TV series star Grant Gustin revealed Barry is finally getting gold boots like his comic book counterpart. “It’s always been the final element that I think has been missing from our suits,” Gustin said. “The suit we have now is the closest we have to a lot of the [comic book] iterations … but I always thought the gold boots would be the final touch.” DC released a close-up image of the boots and a look at the suit with the footwear added. As Gustin intimated, the boots have long been a running joke behind the scenes. They will debut when The Flash begins its eighth season in November.Beyond the long-awaited kicks, the Arrowverse was also represented at DC FanDome via an assortment of special videos. Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie and Rachel Skarsten teased Batwoman and Alice’s state-enforced team-up while the cast of Supergirl looked back their six seasons. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow celebrated 100 episodes in 100 seconds and the cast of Superman and Lois presented a tour of the Kent farmhouse. And although not technically an Arrowverse show (it takes place on the Post-Crisis Earth-2, after all), Stargirl took an extended look at this week’s upcoming episode, which sees Courtney (Brec Bassinger) trapped in the Shadow Lands, where she runs into the Golden Age Dr. Mid-Nite (Alex Collins). But to cap off the Arrowverse presence at FanDome, Naomi star Kaci Walfall debuted a first look at the program, in which she stars as a high schooler who discovers her connection to the DC Multiverse is more staggering than she can imagine. And as the scene shown during FanDome revealed, it all begins with a Superman sighting.Naomi will debut on The CW sometime in 2022.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

6.14.4 3月喜迎How s the Artistry? Much of the series is beautiful to look at conceptually, but there s no getting around the sameness of the character design, the lack of expression in those big, soulless American-doll-style eyes, and the lifeless storytelling. Brian Lowry, CNN.com Telling the puppet characters apart sometimes proves a daunting challenge, and it s difficult to mount much enthusiasm for the task given the first episode s plodding pace. Rob Owen, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Like the original, it s an extraordinary technical achievement filled with stunning images and remarkable puppet work. And, also like the original, it won t appeal to everyone. Keith Phipps, TV Guide You can liken it to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones or any high fantasy series you like, but after ten magical hours it truly stands on its own as a gorgeous, innovative, emotional, joyous, and exceptional wonder. Allison Keene, Paste Magazine(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)How s the Storytelling? A beauty with a fully realized world which seems to know where it s going and how to get there. Verne Gay, Newsday The thrilling, moving Age of Resistance marks an impressive pushback against the age of CGI. Sara Stewart, New York Post A good reminder that the fantasy genre is about taking a step toward something unfamiliar and then letting it take you away. Hank Stuever, Washington Post An astonishing achievement that will equally delight and disturb. Matt Fowler, IGN Movies The series (which has to fill five times as much screen time as the movie) is full of padding, especially in the tedious scenes of the vain, petty Skeksis squabbling with each other. The first episode opens with three and a half minutes of solid narration (Sigourney Weaver) to explain the fairly rudimentary set-up, and there are long, unnecessary detours that seem meant to expand the world of Thra, but are mostly just easily skippable filler. Josh Bell, CBR The film established a world that was strange and mysterious, but it barely skimmed the surface of its potential in its 90-minute runtime. The Age of Resistance writers are filling that blank space in a way that feels natural rather than superfluous. They’ve invented past conflicts, expanded the roles of characters from the film, and built a nuanced social order for the Gelflings that helps explain how the Skeksis came to power and maintained their grasp on Thra for a thousand years. The writers have also created numerous minor touches that add to the character of the world, like beautiful, somber rituals for the choosing of a new Gelfling leader, and a way of mourning that still embraces the show’s central philosophy that death is a necessary, important part of life. Samantha Nelson, The Verge(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)How s The Voice Work? A few standouts in the impressively deep cast are worth mentioning here, and none more than Simon Pegg s incredible version of The Chamberlain. Fans will remember this devious opportunist from the original film, and Pegg is unrecognizably perfect taking over the role, becoming the most fascinating character in the series. Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel also brings vibrancy and light to her unintentionally corpse-looking Gelfling, Deet, with her endlessly endearing voice work. Awkafina is a riot on the other end of the spectrum as The Collector, the pus-filled, whiny Skeksis along with Mark Hamill doing what he does best in a delightfully over-the-top performance as The Scientist. Kyle Wilson, The Lamplight Review Aside from the assurance of puppetry over CGI, the biggest draw to the series? Its incredibly stacked voice cast, which includes a who’s who of sci-fi/fantasy TV and film. They rise up to the challenge, with some of them clearly having a blast recording it. (On the Skeksis side, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, and Simon Pegg are all highlights.) But in a season of television that has 180 speaking parts (many of them introduced at the same time), most of that celebrity voice cast gets a little lost in the shuffle. Michelle Jaworski, The Daily Dot(Photo by Kevin Baker/Netflix)Final Verdict? Simultaneously acts as a gift to fans packed with Easter eggs and a powerful primer for the uninitiated. Caroline Framke, Variety It s a rare and beautiful beast that s definitively an epic TV series, as well as feeling very easy to surrender to and bury oneself between luxuriously rich storytelling and gloriously beautiful pops of color. Kimberly Ricci, Uproxx One of the most remarkable productions in TV history, and one of the best modern fantasies ever made for the small screen. Erik Kain, Forbes Whether you re watching for fulfilled nostalgia or current pleasure, this is a whimsical, fun and entertaining series. Dan Fienberg, Hollywood Reporter Ultimately, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance prequel is a more than worthy successor to Henson s 1982 masterpiece while establishing itself as a master work in its own right. There is something for everyone in this exquisite offering. Nicole Drum, ComicBook.com Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a triumph of creativity and entertainment. Chris Cummins, Den of GeekThe Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 2 launches Friday, August 30 on Netflix
King of the Crop: “Original” Us Takes Records For Horror, March and “R”-Rated Films(Photo by Universal)Let’s lay out some pretty amazing facts about Us’ million weekend. That is the highest opening ever for an original “R”-rated film. The 11 “R” films to open higher were either sequels or adapted from popular books. Us is also the biggest opening ever for an original live-action film in March and an original horror film in any month. Only It and last year’s Halloween opener higher. But…can it outgross Get Out s 6 million?Us has already doubled Get Out’s .4 million opening. A good start indeed. It is the 142nd film to open with million or more. Of those previous 141 films, do you know how many failed to reach the 6 million earned by Get Out? Six. (Fifty Shades of Grey, Halloween 2018, Fast and Furious, Quantum of Solace, X-Men: Apocalypse, 2012). That is already 95.7% in favor of Us besting Get Out’s total. The number to watch next week when Dumbo knocks Us back to second is whether its second weekend is over or under million.Rotten Returns: Captive State Takes A Dive(Photo by Focus Features)In its second week, Focus Features’ Captive State could not remain in a Top 10 where four finishers made less than million this weekend. That is because it took an estimated 70.7% drop to only 8,000. The million production that has grossed all of .2 million in 10 days of release is the second film of 2018 to have a 70% drop or higher. (Replicas fell 81.5%.) In 2018 there were six wide releases that dropped as much in their second weekend – Mortal Engines, Assassination Nation, Gringo, Super Troopers 2, Kin, and Once Upon a Deadpool.Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Top 10 Of MCU(Photo by Disney)One film already carving its path amongst the all-timers at the box office is Captain Marvel. With another million this weekend its total stands at 1 million, the 21st-best total for a film after 17 days of release. Its worldwide total currently stands at 0 million – or – the 7th highest-grossing film based on a Marvel property ever.Among other victories in the Top 10 this week we have How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which is up to 8 million worldwide, just million behind the original (which is still the series’ domestic champion with 7.5 million.) If estimates hold on A Madea Family Funeral it will officially be the third highest-grossing film of Tyler Perry’s directorial career. Finally while the numbers are not giant for Five Feet Apart, a 34% drop from last week means the million production has now grossed over million and should get itself at least over million when all is said and done. This Time Last Year: Pacific Rim Led, But Would Soon Fall(Photo by Warner Bros)One of the biggest bombs of 2018, nevertheless, opened to no. 1 this weekend. Pacific Rim Uprising began with .1 million and later finished with just under million total domestically. Black Panther was finally knocked back to second place with another million as it had amassed over 1 million after six weekends. Also opening with Sherlock Gnomes (.6 million), Paul Apostle of Christ (.1 million), Midnight Sun ( million) and Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane which missed the top ten with .7 million. Leading the per-theater-average charge was Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (,011 on each of its 27 screens for .62 million.) Fifty Shades Freed also managed to finally cross the 0 million mark.On the Vine: Elephants and a Beach Bum(Photo by Dumbo)Disney releases the first of their 2019 live-action remakes with Dumbo. Spanish-language animation along with Spanish-language TV, horror, and cinema at large   is on the rise. Over the last 15 years animators from all over the Latinx diaspora have emerged to tell stories in a variety of animated mediums: traditional 2D animation, 3D computer-generated graphics, stop-motion, rotoscoping, and beyond. And while many of their names aren t as synonymous with animation as Disney, Miyazaki, or even Bakshi and Bluth, with such an abundance of talented creators in the game it’s high time more viewers became familiar with their work. That said, spoiler alert, there is a Disney film on this list. Gotta give props where they’re due.Like the Latinx diaspora itself, the movies on this list come from all over the world and tell all kinds of stories from fantastical dreamland adventures, to horrifying stories of survival, to every coming-of-age beat in between all styled to their creator’s unique visions. Some are geared toward children, others should never be viewed by a child. But they are all fantastic pieces of work that any animation (or movie) lover should know. Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles (2018) 98%Country: SpainSet in the 1930s, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles is a surreal journey through the making of director Luis Buñuel’s documentary Land Without Bread. Following the fallout of his first film, Buñuel is stranded without a project. When a bet backfires, he finds himself traveling with anthropologist Maurice Legenre through the Las Hurdes region of Spain, filming a documentary. Buñuel borrows from its titular director’s life and work, but is primarily based on Fermín Solis’ graphic novel Buñuel en el laberinto de las tortugas. It’s currently Certified Fresh, with many critics praising its innovative, surrealist imagery, and its ability to do a l

It has been just over a year since Jordan Peele made history winning the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his genre-bending horror film Get Out. He also made history with his nominations: Peele was the first African American to be nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay for a debut film. This awards season he returns to the Oscars stage as one of the producers of Spike Lee s critically acclaimed BlacKkKlansman, placing a bookend on a historic year for Black filmmakers. Kicked off by Black Panther’s box office dominance and culminating with Into the Spider-Verse s Miles Morales near-perfect debut, 2018 was a watershed moment for diverse filmmakers and stories. Though vastly different in tone, technique, and genre, each Black-led film added to the history and legacy of Black cinema, and expanded upon it. In honor of Black History Month, we re taking moment to celebrate some of the most historic moments from the last 12 months for Black filmmakers and performers. These aren t all of them, of course: so please add your favorites in the comments.Spike Finally gets his due(Photo by David Lee /© Focus Features /Courtesy Everett Collection)Spike Lee presented Jordan Peele with the win for Best Director at last year s Independent Spirit Awards. When the Get Out writer-director got to the stage he made a point to highlight the synergy of that moment saying, Getting this award from Spike is crazy, let s make no mistake I would not be standing here if we re not for this man. In turn, Lee might not have gained his first directorial Oscar nomination if it were not for Peele passing on the opportunity to helm BlacKkKlansman, signing on as a producer, and hiring Lee to direct. The movie was a big return to form for Lee: It earned the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival, has nabbed six Oscar nominations, and is his best-reviewed film in over a decade. The 70s-set dramedy – and scathing indictment on political apathy – earned Lee his first DGA nomination, too, and shows he is still one of the premier cinematic voices when it comes to pointed socio-cinematic commentary.Five Join the 0 million club(Photo by Barry Wetcher /© MGM /Courtesy Everett Collection)African American filmmakers also shined at the 2018 box office. In February, Ryan Coogler s Black Panther racked up over 0 million at the domestic box office, and finished the year as the highest-earning film of 2018. Other African American filmmakers to earn over 0 million at the box office in 2018 included Antoine Fuqua (Equalizer 2), Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), and Ava DuVernay (A Wrinkle in Time). The African American filmmakers movies earned a combined .2 billion at the domestic box office. Hannah Beachler s Oscars First(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)In the 90-plus years of the Academy Awards there had never been a black production designer nominated for an Oscar – then Hannah Beachler made history. Her Afro-futurist set design for Black Panther helped immerse the audience in the world of Wakanda; from the nation s planes to the Throne Room to Shuri s laboratory, the detailing of every prop and backdrop was unlike anything we had seen on the big screen. (Music fans may know Beachler for her Emmy-nominated work on Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade. Does Beyoncé trump the Oscars? If Beachler wins we just might find out.) Ava DuVernay Makes History, Signs Mega DealsWe previously mentioned that DuVernay was one of the five African American directors whose films made more than 0 million at the domestic box office in 2018, but the Selma director distinguishes herself further as the first ever African American female director to do so with A Wrinkle In Time. It was one of several big achievements for DuVernay in 2018: She was also the first Black female director to serve on the Jury at the Cannes film Festival (alongside Denis Villeneuve, Cate Blanchett, and Kristen Stewart); she inked a 0 million multi-year deal with Warner Bros. Television; and wrapped production on her Central Park Five miniseries for Netflix. Did we mention she is directing New Gods for DC? As if that wasn t enough, the publicist-turned-director continuously works to ensure the next crop of female filmmakers has access to opportunities. DuVernay s OWN series, Queen Sugar, again led all scripted television programs in the hiring of female filmmakers, particularly women of color.Sterling K. Brown s Honors Pile Up (Photo by Ron Batzdorff / ©NBC / courtesy Everett Collection)Sterling K. Brown s entire 2018 – and early 2019 – has been one for the record books. In January of last year, the This is Us Star became the first African American to win the SAG Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series. He also became the first black man to win a Golden Globe for acting in a TV drama. Just this past week he became only the second actor to win Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture (for Black Panther) and a TV program (for The Is Us) at the same SAG Awards ceremony, and the first-ever African American to do so.
Fans lost their minds when Saturday Night Live announced this week that both Game of Thrones Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and K-Pop supergroup BTS would appear in upcoming episodes. It was almost enough to overshadow the Operation Varsity Blues scandal that hit this week — but not quite.TOP STORYCollege Admissions Scandal Rocks Hollywood; TV Star Reportedly Loses Jobs(Photo by Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images; Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)In what federal investigators dubbed Operation Varsity Blues, actresses Lori Loughlin, who played Aunt Becky in Full House and its sequel series Fuller House, and Felicity Huffman, who won an Emmy for her role as Lynette Scavo in Desperate Housewives, are among 50 people who face federal charges for their parts in a college admissions bribery scandal, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Dozens of individuals involved in a nationwide conspiracy that facilitated cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities as purported athletic recruits were arrested by federal agents in multiple states and charged in documents unsealed on March 12, 2019, in federal court in Boston, the DOJ said. Athletic coaches from Yale, Stanford, USC, Wake Forest and Georgetown, among others, are implicated, as well as parents and exam administrators. The lead defendant, William Rick Singer, pled guilty on March 12 in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts to counts of racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and obstruction of justice and will be sentenced on June 19.The government charged Huffman, Loughlin, and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Loughlin surrendered to federal authorities and posted a million bond on Wednesday, CNN reported. The Giannullis agreed to a pay bribes totaling 0,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew—thereby facilitating their admission to USC, according to the complaint.Huffman, who was arrested at her home, posted a 0,000 bond and surrendered her passport to the FBI. She and her husband, Shameless star William H. Macy, to fake charity Key Worldwide Foundation allegedly to get her daughter a higher score on the SATs. The criminal complaint also includes transcriptions of phone calls between Singer, Huffman, and her spouse setting up the SAT cheating. Macy is not named in the complaint and has not been charged.Loughlin, Giannulli, and Huffman will next appear in court on March 29 in Boston. Loughlin also reportedly has lost her job on Netflix s Fuller House, this after Hallmark Channel cut ties with her, Deadline reported. The scandal set off a firestorm of criticism on social media, with many observers complaining about money, class, and privilege.Given the scandal emerging today, this graph deserves to be seen again.A rich person with a 900 on their SAT is more likely to graduate with a bachelor s degree than a poor person with a 1500.#collegescam #operationvarsityblues pic.twitter.com/3n5u9U8jdU Ryan Burge 📊 (@ryanburge) March 12, 2019SNL Taps Jon Snow and K-Pop Superstars BTS for Upcoming Episodes(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO; Frederick M. Creator Marta Kauffman told Rolling Stone that there are several reasons why that just isn’t gonna happen.“One, the show is about a time in your life when your friends are your family. It’s not that time anymore. All we’d be doing is putting those six actors back together, but the heart of the show would be gone,” she said. “Two, I don’t know what good it does us. The show is doing just fine, people love it. [A reunion] could only disappoint. ‘The One Where Everyone’s Disappointed. ”What If? Could Be the Latest Disney+ Project(Photo by Marvel)Another comic book is headed to the small screen: An animated TV anthology adaptation of What If? is currently in the works for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. According to Slashfilm, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are set to produce the series, which, like the comics, will focus on what the Marvel universe would look like if certain key moments had happened differently. Per Slashfilm, one episode is in the works involving What If? Vol. 1 #47, which posited what could have happened if Loki had found the hammer of Thor — and could potentially mean actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would reprise their roles in the series.Attack of the Clones(Photo by BBC America)Orphan Black could live on: According to Variety, a new series set in the same world as the original show, about a woman who discovers she is a clone created in an international scientific conspiracy, is being developed at AMC. While there will be ties to Orphan Black, it will “not be a spinoff or reboot of the original series, but rather a completely new story set in the same world.” Producers are currently recruiting a writer.Netflix’s Royal Baby

电玩街 (Photo by 20th Century Fox)Blockbuster movies cost a bunch of money to make – jaw-dropping special effects and big-name actors don t come cheap. In order to make the expense worth it, movie studios need to pull out all the stops to get moviegoers to buy tickets once the film premieres, and that typically involves a killer marketing campaign. These days, slick trailers, along with all sorts of unique real-world stunts and marketing gimmicks, can be as much of a production as the final movie itself. These memorable marketing campaigns take different forms — sometimes it just takes a really well-done trailer and a memorable use of a song, as seen and heard in the trailer for Jordan Peele’s Us, which retools Luniz’s “I’ve Got 5 on It” in a deliciously creepy way. Other times movie marketers will stage mysterious real-world stunts to get excited fans involved. Whatever the method, a well-done marketing campaign for a well-done movie often means box office success. Here are 10 of the most memorable movie marketing campaigns we ve seen.Jaws 2 (1978) 61% and Alien (1979) 98%(Photo by Universal Pictures/20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Studio: Universal Pictures / 20th Century FoxWhy you remember it: Because of two incredible taglines.Let’s kick things off with a tie, as both films are shining examples of an older era of promotion, before viral marketing was a thing. Jaws was the first blockbuster, but Jaws 2 was briefly the highest-grossing sequel of all time until Rocky II bested it the following year. Part of the film’s success likely has to do with one of the greatest taglines of all time — “Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water” — the work of famed and innovative producer Andrew J. Kuehn. The following year, Alien came around with one of the other great taglines in movie history, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” Neither of these movies had real-world promotional activations, but they were united in memorable taglines that, thanks to their use of the second-person, made would-be viewers feel part of the cinematic horrors to come.Did it work? As mentioned, Jaws 2 was a huge success, pulling in 8 million. Alien’s box office figure is a little disputed, as some creative Hollywood accounting originally recorded the film as a loss for Fox, but it went on to spawn an iconic, acclaimed sci-fi horror series. And, of course, those two taglines are now forever seared into the public consciousness.Deadpool (2016) 85% Studio: 20th Century FoxWhy you remember it: Because Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool.Deadpool is known as the Merc with a Mouth, and the film’s promotional team sure did have a lot to say about the film. There was so much marketing, and all of it projected an irreverent, slightly naughty sense of fun. There were parody posters, custom emojis, a feud with Wolverine (and Hugh Jackman), a costume reveal via faux-nude spread, and a flaming bag of poop yule log, to name just a few campaign highlights. Then there was Reynolds, who, as the person most responsible for making Deadpool happen, projected his passion for the wise-cracking hero and modeled his own social presence after the Merc. Two years after Deadpool was released, Reynolds and the Fox marketing team went even harder with the promotion of Deadpool 2, taking over the DVD covers of other popular movies at Walmart and handling Stephen Colbert s late-night monologue duties, before going further yet for in its meta promotion of Once Upon a Deadpool. The marketing behind the franchise is now officially one of the reasons we look forward to another Deadpool movie.Did it work? Deadpool made 5 million at the box office and became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. Not bad for a superhero movie. The Social Network (2010) 96% Studio: Columbia PicturesWhy you remember it: Because “you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.”David Fincher’s moody bio-pic about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is really an exceptional villain origin story, and the marketing for the film made that clear. The first trailer is scored to a haunting cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” as sung by a children’s choir, illustrating how there was something unsettling behind all this “friending.” Then there’s the poster, which features Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) looking at the viewer from the shadows, his face obscured by the memorable and ominous tagline in a crisp Futura font. Both the “choral cover of pop song” and “poster with words on a face” would go on to be often-imitated promotional tropes, but they were just the Google Plus to The Social Network’s Facebook.Did it work? The Social Network made 4.9 million and was nominated for or won a host of major awards. Plus, Zuckerberg had some qualms with the movie – so that s a success.Psycho (1960) 96% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because of the secrecy and Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful set tour.Modern moviegoers who were too young to remember seeing Psycho in theaters probably remember Hitchcock’s iconic slasher for the famous shower scene. Hitchcock knew that would be the case. Movie trailers weren’t what they were back then — the idea of multi-level movie marketing as we know it today didn’t really emerge until the late 90s. But, Hitchcock was the master of suspense, and he knew how to get an audience shaking with curiosity and anticipation. The trailer for Psycho featured Hitchcock giving a tour of the Bates Motel, offering gory hints of what horrors might have happened there but stopping just short of giving anything away. That, along with a campaign to keep the shocking twist in the movie a secret – which went so far as preventing Paramount Studio execs from reading the script – had audiences eager to see what happened.Did it work? Psycho cost about 0,000 to make and made more than million during its initial release — and this is in 1960s dollars! It was a huge hit, went on to enjoy multiple theatrical reissues, and is generally regarded as a landmark horror movie. So, yeah, Hitchcock’s a great tour guide.Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) 91% (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Studio: 20th Century FoxWhy you remember it: Because of Sacha Baron Cohen’s in-character interviews as Borat. It’s fitting that a movie that blurred the lines between comedy and documentary (not to mention acting and reality) would have a similarly meta promotional campaign. Borat wasn’t a new creation, as Cohen’s character had been on the Da Ali G Show for years, but he wasn’t widely known. That let Cohen dupe the movie’s subjects — as well as many would-be ticket-buyers – into thinking that this kooky Borat character might be on the level.Did it work? Borat made 2 million at the box office, much to Kazakhstan’s chagrin.Cloverfield (2008) 78% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because of all the rampant speculation about the top-secret mystery plot.A good marketing campaign doesn’t give everything away, it just teases some of the best stuff so that moviegoers are excited to see the rest. Cloverfield’s marketing was so memorable because it gave, well, essentially nothing away. The first trailer, which came by surprise ahead of Transformers screenings, didn’t even include the movie’s title or any plot details. This, along with some innovative virtual tie-ins (shout-out to MySpace), had fans wondering what it might be. A Lost movie? A Godzilla film? An anime adaptation? Something new?Did it work? Like The Blair Witch Project, which pioneered this type of hype-building mystery promotion, Cloverfield was a hit. The film made 0.8 million against a budget of million, and spawned a whole franchise/ universe of sci-fi films united mostly by viral marketing, though none were as successful as the original.Inception (2010) 87% (Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)Studio: Warner Bros. PicturesWhy you remember it: Because of the spinning top mind-game (and the “BWWAAHHHH” sound).Warner Bros. spent 0 million to market Inception, an increasingly rare blockbuster that was wholly original, not a sequel nor an adaptation. To get people excited about an unknown quantity, the studio banked on Christopher Nolan’s post-Dark Knight appeal and made an online viral game involving the spinning top that diehard fans tried to solve. The game unlocked the official trailer, and that was a great piece of advertising too, in no small part because of the booming Inception sound that rightfully became a meme.Did it work? The marketing certainly planted the idea of going to see this movie in a lot of people s’ heads, because Inception made 8.3 million at the box office. The Dark Knight (2008) 94% (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Studio: Warner Bros. PicturesWhy you remember it: Because you solved an interactive mystery across a virtual Gotham City, and Heath Ledger’s untimely death. The heroes of DC Comics save the day in fictional cities, like Metropolis. But, to promote the second (and best) of Christopher Nolan’s three Batman movies, the alternate reality game company 42 Entertainment made Gotham City real. Using websites like WhySoSerious.com, fake Gothamite newspapers, and Harvey Dent campaign materials, 42 Entertainment sent fans on a scavenger hunt all over the web and the physical United States — starting with San Diego’s Comic-Con, where one reward was the first image of the movie s Joker. It gave fans a tantalizing glimpse of the drama to come, and let them feel like the Batman, the World’s Greatest Detective, himself. Add to that the tragedy of Heath Ledger’s untimely death ahead of the premiere of his incredible performance as the Joker, and you’ve got a super-powered level of expectations.Did it work? The Dark Knight made over billion at the box office and was popular enough to change the way the Academy Awards work.Paranormal Activity (2007) 83% Studio: Paramount PicturesWhy you remember it: Because you had to demand it.Paranormal Activity was an extremely inexpensive movie, one that seemed destined for a modest indie release and perhaps a chance at becoming a cult classic. But, the marketing team at Paramount had the bright idea of democratizing horror. Trailers were released featuring night-vision footage of shocked and delighted viewing audiences and promising a scary theater experience; would-be moviegoers had to vote on a website, hoping that there would be enough fan demand for Paramount to bring the film to their city or town. The website, which was made with the user-driven event calendar company Eventful’s help, added a sense of urgency and participation in what otherwise might have just been an overlooked found-footage flick.Did it work? Paranormal Activity cost just ,000 to make, and it made more than 3 million at the box office. It is, by most accounts, the most profitable movie ever made. The Blair Witch Project (1999) 86% Studio: Artisan EntertainmentWhy you remember it: Because you thought it was real.Without The Blair Witch Project’s marketing, there would be no Cloverfield, no Inception, and essentially no viral movie marketing as we know it today. In the early days of the internet, Artisan Entertainment’s scrappy online team created a website and surrounding hype campaign that claimed the story of the Blair Witch was true. There were interviews with the “missing” characters’ parents and backstories from investigators trying to solve this “true” story. In the real world, missing posters went up around colleges and at film festivals. Because of all the marketing, The Blair Witch Project wasn’t just a low-budget indie horror flick — it was a real, ongoing mystery. Moviegoers and internet users have gotten more media-savvy, so this feat likely won’t be equaled, but The Blair Witch Project was the perfect storm, a way to use technology, advertising, and psychology to turn “based upon a true story” into box office gold.Did it work? The Blair Witch Project made 8,639,099, which is more than 4,000 times what it cost to make the movie. Also, admit it — you thought, for a second, that it was a documentary. What were some of your favorite movie marketing campaigns? Let us know in the comments!Like this?
