很多LOL老玩家之所以不玩手游,是因为原本在端游积累的英雄和皮肤到了手游又要重新开始,迁移成本很高,就算你已经在手游上重新买了英雄和皮肤,你能保证你的LOL开黑队友也买了吗? Joel MearesThe lineup for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival was announced this morning. This year s festival – which runs May 14-26 – opens with Jim Jarmusch s star-studded zombie-comedy The Dead Don t Die, starring Adam Driver, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton. They are Mati Diop s Atlantique, Jessica Hausner s Little Joe, Celine Schiamma s Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire, and Sibyl from Justine Triet. Nine more female directors feature in other parts of the programming. This first announcement did have one notable absence: Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Festival general delegate Thierry Frémaux explained to press after the lineup was announced that Tarantino s ninth studio film is not ready yet, but the festival has hope it will be completed by the final lineup announcement. 2. 公平游戏环境
atoes – and contributing to it. And don’t forget to let us know what you think of the latest Fresh and Rotten flicks in theaters.

Santa’s elves are certainly the most well-known pointy-eared protagonists. Do you identify with Hermey, the outcast and friend-of-reindeer in Rankin/Bass stop-motion classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, who’s just not like the other elves? Maybe you don’t have elfin blood at all — you’re just so committed to the spirit of Christmas that you’re an honorary elf, like Buddy from Elf. Or maybe the holiday season is a time for scheming, and you re really most like Dwight from The Office or Marcus from Bad Santa. There are also plenty of pop culture elves outside the North Pole. This holiday season, we want to help you find your elfin alter ego, whoever they may be — Santa s helper or perhaps even Elven royalty. Take our quiz below to find out which film or television elf you share traits with.

nny in Philadelphia for nearly 15 years. Somewhere in there McElhenney (along with Charlie Day and Megan Ganz) found time to create Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet for Apple TV+. The new series chronicles the highs and lows of a video game studio run by a crew of misfits and eccentrics. At the helm is Ian Grimm (McElhenney), whose righteous self-absorption often rubs his lead engineer Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao) the wrong way, and pushes the game and workplace in myriad directions. Mythic Quest is a thoughtful and hilarious celebration and critique of a complicated industry. The fifth episode, written by Katie McElhenney and directed by Rob (and starring New Girl’s Jake Johnson and Fargo’s Cristin Miloti), is especially breathtaking. You’ll never look at shovels (or flashlights) the same way again. – Haña Lucero-Colin, TV Curation ManagerWhere to watch: Apple TV+Commitment: 4.5 hours (one season)Unorthodox: Miniseries (2020) 96% (Netflix)This Netflix four-part limited series initially presents itself as unassuming as its main character does in the drama, but minutes into the first episode, the rich inner life of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish girl escaping the oppression of strict religion leaps from the screen. Shira Haas plays Esty Shapiro, a 19-year-old  New Yorker who, unhappy in her marriage, flees to Berlin. As Esty s story unfolds, the series, based on the bestselling memoir by Deborah Feldman, reveals how damaging forced ignorance can be to individuals, families, and entire communities. Diminutive Haas gives an award-worthy performance that is both deeply rooted and ethereal simultaneously, as the saddest Manic Pixie Dream Girl ever gets fed up with being the supporting character in her husband’s life and embarks on her own heroic tale. – Debbie Day, Sr. TV EditorWhere to Watch: NetflixCommitment: 4 hours (four-part limited series)Recess  (Disney+)(Photo by © Walt Disney Television / Courtesy: Everett Collection)Recess tracks six 4th-grade friends and their rabble-rousing escapades on the school playground. The blacktop and grassy field of the series are depicted as a mythical arena, promising vast personal freedom away from chores and homework, yet demands conformity through rigid class hierarchy. That s because all the children, lords of flies and rubber balls, have created their own top-down society. They ve built a monarchy ruled by a 6th-grade king, with a punishable unwritten code of conduct, where identity and reputation are everything. It s a complete, utterly amusing microcosm. Watching Recess in 2020 is certainly a nostalgic and comforting experience. But this was always a nostalgic show, even when it was airing new. It feels like it was written by actual empathetic adults, with each segment taking a core emotion or question from their own childhoods and exaggerating them to comedic extremes. And in doing so, they find wisdom and the departing lesson, revealed with the distance of time. Each episode is comprised of two standalone 10-minute segments, so there s no waffling about with the plot; in fact, I still haven t encountered such ruthlessly efficient dialogue and slapstick, scaled to a kind of screwball tempo, in television entertainment – children s or otherwise. – Alex Vo, Film EditorWhere to Watch: Disney+Commitment: 23 hours (65 episodes over three seasons)The Witcher: Season 1 (2019) 68% (Netflix)The Witcher is an action-fantasy series based on author Andrzej Sapkowski s novels, which spawned a wildly popular video-game franchise, but you don t have to be a fan of those to enjoy it. It has a bit of everything: action, horror, romance, and – maybe surprisingly – humor. You ll follow the intertwining storylines of intriguing characters, including the titular man himself, Witcher Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill), as he slays monsters on his journey to find and protect the young princess Ciri. Geralt is joined by his loyal companion, Jaskier the Bard, who quickly became a fan favorite with his humor and cheeky songs, including Toss a Coin to Your Witcher, which will most definitely get stuck in your head after the first time you hear it. The narrative is confusing at first – the show plays with time and chronology – but stick with it, because once you make it to episode 4, “Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials, the characters storylines come together. The Witcher pays off and will leave you anticipating season 2. – Lucy Bruckner, ProducerWhere to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (one season)The Other Two: Season 1 (2019) 94% (Comedy Central)In The Other Two, millennial siblings Brooke (Heléne York) and Cary (Drew Tarver) are in thrust into the shadow of their 13-year-old brother Chase s (Chase Walker) spotlight when his song Marry U at Recess goes viral. Former teen dancing star Brooke and struggling actor Cary have both been scraping by for years when their younger brother becomes famous literally overnight. The series offers a fascinating look at the inanity and indignity of showbiz in the digital age; the rules have changed, but the sheer nonsense stays the same. Molly Shannon is brilliant as the Midwestern Mom, and the show never forgets to hammer home that Chase is still just a kid. It s hard to imagine that viewers of any of age will be surprised by the manufactured details of celebrity life, like Chase s fake relationship with another teen superstar, but they all land with big laughs in this cringe-comedy.Where to watch: Comedy Central, FandangoNOW, Amazon, VuduCommitment: 3.5 hours (one season) () % (Masterpiece PBS/BBC)I recently finished Hilary Mantel s award-winning historical novels, Wolf Hall and its sequel Bring Up the Bodies, which both follow the quick rise to power of the wise, decent, and secretive Thomas Cromwell in Henry VIII s court. They re dense books, and take some time to get into, but once you acquaint yourself with the rhythms of Mantel s incredible prose – and develop a functioning knowledge of the endless list of characters involved – the story is frankly bingeable. In Mantel s pages, you get to witness the rise and fall of a ruthless Anne Boleyn, step behind curtains for political treachery and backstabbing, and even learn a bit about the history of England. And there s plenty of twists and turns and sex and violence and all that good stuff, too. The BBC adaptation of the two books – which are combined into one miniseries – is a similar experience: A little slow and potentially challenging at first (this is definitely not The Tudors), but once you adjust to its deceptively relaxed rhythms – and, yes, get to know who s who – you ll be hooked. And it boasts a formidable cast: Mark Rylance as Cromwell, Damian Lewis as Henry VIII, and a pre-Crown Claire Foy showing us the star she would become as Boleyn. Mantel just released a third book in the series; here s hoping we get a follow-up miniseries to go with it. – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefWhere to Watch: Amazon, iTunes, VuduCommitment: 6 hours (six-episode miniseries)Check out our regular April Binge Guide. Thumbnail image Anika Molnar/Netflix, Apple TV+, Masterpiece PBS/BBC
Ryan Reynolds stars in Free Guy, a movie about a video game character who suddenly breaks from his expected monotony to reach his full potential. And as it turns out, it’s also a movie that breaks from expectations to reach its full potential. That’s the consensus from the surprisingly very positive reviews from the new action-comedy, which hits theaters on August 13.While familiar in its premise and the latest movie to capitalize on a studio’s willingness to mash up famous pop culture IP, Free Guy is said to be a lot of fun, with tons of action, laughs, and heart, plus a bunch of surprises that critics aren’t divulging. The only place where reviews really disagree, though, is in where they land on Taika Waititi’s scene-chewing villainous role. Here’s what critics are saying about Free Guy:Is Free Guy more than it seems? “Free Guy is way better than you may have been expecting — in fact, it’s absolutely joyful.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“A very pleasant surprise.” Mark Cassidy, ComicBookMovie.com“Free Guy is surprisingly far more complex than expected.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“I never expected to see a film that hilariously deals with philosophical conundrums the way The Good Place used to.” Sherin Nicole, idobi.com“One of the summer’s bigger surprises.” Joey Magidson, Awards RadarHow does it compare to other video game movies?“The best-ever video-game movie.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“One of the best video game movies that Hollywood has managed to churn out.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“[One] of the best video game-themed movies in recent memory.” Germain Lussier, io9.com(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Will it appeal to gamers?“It actually understands what makes video games tick.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“There are numerous Easter eggs for gamers to find in the background details and, crucially, it s done with love for the culture, rather than any cynicism.” Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“Very clearly a movie aimed at young gamers… and for a film aimed at gamers, it seems pretty oblivious to what that audience actually wants in a game.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects“When branching off the core story and trying to bring in certain elements, gamers may be less impressed with some of the gag choices.” Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentWhat about non-gamers?“While it’s very respectful and true to gaming culture, it’s one of those movies that almost anyone could watch and find enjoyment in.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“If you’re not into video games, I wouldn’t say that’s a hurdle for Free Guy any more than not being into Lego is a hurdle for The Lego Movie.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“Free Guy is fun and visually stunning enough to hold the interest of anyone looking for a literal escape to something far away from the real world.” Catherine Springer, AwardsWatch“Free Guy is nothing if not a movie that wins you over in spite of your better judgment and best defenses.” David Ehrlich, IndieWire(Photo by 20th Century Studios)How is the action?“The film is loaded with wall-to-wall action, albeit the cartoonish kind that makes this solid family entertainment.” Chris Bumbray, JoBlo“The action is used not just to entertain, but to develop characters, which in turn endears them to the audience.” Germain Lussier, io9.comAnd the visuals?“The world-building is incredible… The set design and VFX are impeccable and engaging.” Yolanda Machado, Nerdist“They’re just flashy enough to make the world of Free City seem both fun to live in and kind of real.” Germain Lussier, io9.comWhat about the script?“Incredibly uplifting.” Matt Goldberg, Collider“However predictable, the journey to get there makes up for it by being akin to a rocket ship.” Germain Lussier, io9.com“So much energy has been poured into the creation of Free City that the plot suffered as a result.”  Ian Sandwell, Digital Spy“If it sounds complicated, plot-wise, that s because it is, overly so, to the point that the film has to stop a couple of times to explain itself to some extent, although certain plot points remain unexplained, perhaps because the credited screenwriters could not remember the narrative point and/or lost the cocktail napkin on which the script was originally jotted down upon.” Peter Martin, Screen Anarchy“Free Guy is the unfortunate example that fails to add anything new… It neglects to build character and narrative of its own.” Rob Hunter, Film School Rejects(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Is it funny?“One of the funniest movies of the year.” Robert Daniels, The Playlist“Hilarious thanks to a few laugh-out-loud surprises courtesy of the merger between 20th Century Studios and the Walt Disney Company.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerBut does it have heart?“It really believes in itself…there’s a real, beating heart beneath all that plastic packaging of Free Guy” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm“Will make your heart swell and burst.” Joey Morona, Cleveland Plain DealerDoes the r
Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo are reteaming with Tom Holland, but the project is a dramatic change of pace and scale from their previous work: In Apple TV+’s drama Cherry, Holland plays an army medic who returns home with PTSD and turns to crime – and, crushingly, drugs – to deal with his trauma. Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters and then on streaming, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Erik Davis spoke with the Russo Brothers, Holland, and co-star Ciara Bravo about bringing a story to the big and small screens that they hope will open people’s minds about the substance abuse crisis in the US. Plus, the filmmaking duo reveals why they chose Cherry as the follow-up to the biggest film in history and tease a return to the superhero genre sooner than we think (potentially outside the MCU), while Holland says he wants to work with them for as long as he possibly can.Cherry is in theaters Friday, February 26, 2021 and on Apple TV+ from Friday, March 12, 2021.On an Apple device?

21. Mary Louise Screams, Sets Internet Alight, in Big Little Lies: Season 2 (2019) 86%Who’s powerful enough to face off against the collective force of Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz? Meryl Streep, that’s who. Queen Meryl is at the top of her game as the grieving mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s Perry in the second season of the HBO drama, and asserts her power in the premiere with a primal scream that went viral across social media.20. “F k the Police” from Us (2019) 93% (Photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal )The biggest laugh in Jordan Peele’s mind-bending horror hit, Us, comes during one of its most gruesome scenes. Elisabeth Moss’s Kitty is crawling on the ground having been attacked by a doppelgänger of her husband, and – her voice just audible as blood presumably pools in her lungs – she calls out to her Google Home-like device to “call the police.” The device misunderstands her and switches from “Good Vibrations,” which has been playing in the scene, to N.W.A.’s “F k the Police.” Universal Pictures film music president Mike Knobloch told IndieWire that the scene could have gone a different way – the punchline was originally going to be a song by The Police. The movie was tested, though, and audiences responded to the N.W.A. song. “I think it became very clear at a critical point in the process that N.W.A was a much more satisfying choice,” Knobloch told IndieWire.19. Sweet Birthday Baby from Russian Doll: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Netflix)The first time Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia walked out of her friend’s bathroom during her weeknight birthday party, the peppy piano of Harry Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” seemed like a fun retro soundtrack cue. The 20th or the 30th however, and the tune became a little more ominous — as did her pal Maxine’s (Greta Lee) slurred greeting of “sweet birthday babyyyy.” The call became a signature for the show, which was one of Netflix s biggest and most acclaimed hits (Certified Fresh at 96%) of the first half of 2019. 18. Kit Harington Discovers Dany s Fate in Game of Thrones: The Last Watch (2019) 100%(Photo by HBO)Emilia Clarke knew the fate of Daenerys Targaryen when she sat down for the table read of Game of Thrones’ final season, but many of her costars didn’t. Not even her on-screen beau/nephew Kit Harington, whose tearful reaction when he learned what would happen — and how he would be involved — was a rare behind-the-scenes look into the making of season 8, which received a mixed reception from critics.17. Selina sells Gary Out in Veep: Season 7 (2019) 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/HBO)For seven seasons, HBO’s savage political satire Veep never let up in its pursuit of breaking our funny bones with vicious one-liners and some of the darkest comedy we’ve seen on American TV. In its final episode, though, it broke our hearts. The moment comes just before Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) takes the stage to accept the Democratic nomination for president, and, hugging her loyal bagman, Gary (Tony Hale), tells him she couldn’t have done it without him. She’s almost teary, and so are we, because we know what Gary doesn’t: Selina has made him the fall guy for nefarious goings on at the Meyer Foundation; a few minutes later, as she rouses the crowd with talk of sacrifice, we see FBI agents approaching Gary offstage. In an epilogue set 24 years later at Meyers’ funeral, a loyal-to-the-end Gary shows up, armed with lipstick in her favorite shade.16. Michael Marshall Sings San Francisco In The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) 92%The Last Black Man in San Francisco, directed by Joe Talbot from a story by Talbot and the film’s star, Jimmie Fails, features some of the year’s most beautiful cinematography. But this tale of gentrification on the Bay also features one of the most incredible music moments, as the film essentially pauses for a rendition of Scott McKenzie’s 1967 “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers In Your Hair).” The song is given a new, jazzy spin as performed by Michael Marshall (he does the hook/chorus on “I Got 5 On It,” part of another great movie music moment this year) and with tuba courtesy of Norway’s Daniel Herskedal. The song features heavily in the trailer for the film above.15. The Vampire Council Convenes in What We Do in the Shadows: Season 1 (2019) 94%FX’s TV version of the cult vampire movie was always in good hands coming from the film’s co-writer, co-director, and star Jemaine Clement, but things got extra-special when the comedy paid tribute to the vampire genre with a next-level star-studded seventh episode, directed by the film’s other star/co-writer/co-director, Taika Waititi. As Staten Island vampires Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja prepare to face the all-powerful vampire council and answer for their wrongdoing, prepare yourself for a cameo-fest that will blow your mind.14. WTF Did Goose Just Do?! in Captain Marvel (2019) 79%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Comic book fans might have known what was coming, but most moviegoers checking out Carol Danvers’ origin story were as shocked as Nick Fury when Goose the cat suddenly spewed out a bundle of alien tentacles and swallowed the Tesseract. Turns out Goose is a Flerken, a shape-shifting, egg-laying, tentacle-having species of alien with the capacity to house a pocket dimension inside themselves. Duh! In a movie full of scene-stealers – Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos – this feline sidekick stole the whole damn show.13. Whisperers massacre survivors in The Walking Dead: Season 9 (2018) 89%Samantha Morton s Alpha wants the survivors from Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom, and elsewhere to know where her boundaries end, so she mounts the (still jabbering) heads of 10 survivors on pikes and embeds them in the ground to mark the edge of the Whisperers’ territory. R.I.P. Addy, Rodney, Tammy Rose, Highwaymen Ozzy and Alek, DJ, Frankie, and, most shockingly, Henry, Enid, and Tara. The scene is a bloody tableau that Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Henry’s adoptive mom Carol (Melissa McBride), Siddiq (Avi Nash), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), and fans won’t ever forget.12. Elton performs Your Song in Rocketman (2019) 89%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel)Dexter Fletcher’s Elton John biopic is big on spectacle: the director’s staging of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” in a pub and carnival and of “Crocodile Rock” at the Troubadour left us with some of the most memorable screen images and sounds of the year. But it’s a quieter Rocketman scene that lingers longest. Sitting in his family’s living room, Elton (Taron Egerton) starts to put music to Bernie Taupin’s lyrics for “Your Song”; as the song takes shape, Taupin (Jamie Bell), as well as Elton’s mother (Bryce Dallas Howard) and grandmother (Gemma Jones) become transfixed. Egerton delivers show-stopping numbers throughout the Certified Fresh film, but this could be the scene they play come Oscar night.11. Andy Is Willing to Go the Distance in Netflix s Fyre (2019) 92% Andy King has seen all of your FYRE Fest memes — and he loves them! pic.twitter.com/mCNgDoHpjW Netflix (@netflix) January 29, 2019In the battle of this January’s Fyre Festival docs, it was Netflix’s Fyre that came out on top according to the Tomatometer, with a Certified Fresh score of 90%. While Hulu’s Fyre Fraud was no slouch at 78% on the Tomatometer, we think one key sequence may have given Netflix’s film the edge – and you know exactly what we’re talking about. With four 18-wheelers’ worth of Evian sitting in Customs, event producer Andy King confesses he agreed to “take one for the team” and perform fellatio on a government official to free the water. “I drank some mouthwash,” he tells us, before getting in his car fully prepared to do his duty for the fast-imploding festival. In the end King didn’t have to bend the knee – he says Customs released the water on the condition they would be paid soon after the festival ended – and things ended very happily for him. King’s story went viral, he became something of a folk hero, and has been fielding offers from networks for his own TV show.10. The Knife Fight in John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89%(Photo by © Lionsgate)In a franchise characterized by lethal stationery and unpleasant night-outs at the club, what makes a lowly, stabby knife fight stand out? First, it begins with a dash of humor: Keanu Reeves John Wick has been chased into an antiquated New York building, and as he and his assailants pummel each other, they take a second to pause and realize their surroundings. My God, it s full of knives! And then comes the audience wincing as sharp blades of every curve and edge are tossed up and down the hallway, mixed in with some trademark Wickian gun-fu, all shot in steady and crisp camera angles. Then, as Wick emerges victorious, but with one would-be assassin still alive, he hurls an axe in a comically large arc into the guy s skull – just for that last dash of mordant humor. The knife fight captures everything brutal and entertaining about the series.9. The Hot Priest Monologue in Fleabag, Season 2(Photo by Steve Schofield)This moving moment from the series finale from series creator, writer, and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge starts after Jake’s beautiful bassoon piece. The Priest – Andrew Scott, forever known as hot priest hereafter – delivers a speech about love at the wedding of Fleabag’s Dad (Bill Paterson) and godmother (Olivia Colman), starting with “Love is awful!” Claire (Sian Clifford) is alarmed: “There’s something wrong with your Priest.” Fleabag thinks maybe he’s talking about her, but it turns out, it’s a love letter to God — The Priest later dumps her at a bus stop. Check out the full speech: Love is awful. It’s awful. It’s painful. It’s frightening. It makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself, distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish. Makes you creepy. Makes you obsessed with your hair. Makes you cruel. Makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It’s all any of us want, and it’s hell when we get there. So no wonder it’s something we don’t want to do on our own. I was taught if we’re born with love, then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot: It feeling right. When it feels right, it’s easy. But I’m not sure that’s true. It takes strength to know what’s right. And love isn’t something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is: When you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope. 8. Ducky and Bunny have a Plan in Toy Story 4 (2019) 97%(Photo by © Pixar, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Not to take anything away from Forky or Duke Caboom – both great additions to the Toy Story world, and both with their own fantastic moments in the series fourth film. But for pure scene-stealing skills, we re going all in on plush with Ducky and Bunny, voiced by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. As the movie turns into pure heist flick, these two carnival toys kick into comedy high gear, and their one-note suggestions for how to steal a key provide for one of the most gut-busting running gags we ve ever seen in a Pixar film. Definitely stay for the credits. 7. Keanu Makes An Entrance in Always Be My Maybe (2019) 90%In the Year of Keanu Reeves, formerly known as 2019, there was just so much Keanu goodness going around – Duke “Yes I Can-ada!” Caboom; John Wick on a horse; the promise of next year’s Bill and Ted reboot. But perhaps our favorite Keanu moment came in Netflix’s Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe, in which Reeves makes one of the movies’ great entrances, strutting slow-mo into a fancy San Francisco restaurant, shaking hands and blowing kisses as Awolnation’s synthy Sails blasts on the soundtrack. It was the walk that launched a thousand memes, and Reeves performance as a cocky and surreal version of himself in the film is inspired.6. Barry Fights Feral Martial Arts Guru, Lily, in Barry: Season 2 (2019) 100%(Photo by Aaron Epstein/HBO)Sent to kill Ronny Proxin (Daniel Bernhardt), Bill Hader’s Barry has the misfortune of learning during that job that Ronny is a taekwondo champion. Barry manages to break the guy’s windpipe and appears to kill him – and that s when little Lily (Jessie Giacomazzi), Ronny’s daughter and also a martial arts master, comes home. The fight that ensues is the highlight of an incredible season of the Emmy-winning show. Feral with grief, Lily growls and shows off some supernatural leaping abilities. She finally subdues Barry by stabbing him repeatedly, then runs away. “What are you?” Fuches (an always hilarious Stephen Root) screams into the night when the petite warrior later takes a chunk out of his cheek with her teeth. The episode was directed by Hader.5. Reactor 4 explodes in Chernobyl: Miniseries (2019) 96% (Photo by HBO)The story in HBO s acclaimed miniseries Cherobyl begins in Moscow on April 26, 1988, with the dramatic suicide of enfeebled Valery Legasov, played to perfection by Jared Harris (The Terror). In a recording, Legasov indicts Anatoly Dyatlov (Paul Ritter), the man who ran the room at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exactly two years earlier when its core exploded, and calls for his death. The explosion resulted in the worst man-made environmental disaster in history and in untold deaths — estimated in the thousands when reduced life expectancy is included. The story then flashes back to Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, in 1986 and takes viewers directly into the room following the explosion. Dyatlov embodies blind arrogance, as he denies eyewitness accounts that the core has exploded. “You’re confused,” he tells one of his men. “RBMK reactor cores don’t explode.” It turns out that under exactly the right circumstances — one having to do with cost cutting and infuriating incompetence — they do. This scene is where the horror story begins. (Check out our interview with series director Johan Renck.)4. Tony Vanquishes Thanos in Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios)Avengers: Endgame is chock full of moments that are like emotional kryptonite to Marvel fans (hello, mixed media metaphors!). But you re going to need Doctor Strange doing magic hand jazz to hold back the onslaught of tears most of us felt when Tony Stark snapped his fingers as the Infinity Stones were infused into his Iron Man armor, sending Thanos back to the dust from whence he came, and frying himself in the process. It s a pulverizing moment coming at the end of a very long battle – or the end of a very long movie, or the end of a very long series depending on how you look at it – made all the more devastating with the funeral and reunion that immediately follows it. Or how about the moment preceding the snap, when Stark looks straight into the purple fiend s eyes and proclaims, I am Iron Man ? It s all a whirling carousel of rising intensity and action, and that snap really ties it all together.3. A Trumpet and a Verdict in When They See Us: Season 1 (2019) 97%(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us is a gripping and harrowing journey through the darkest corners of the criminal justice system: from bent investigations and interrogations to heavily weighted legal proceedings to the corruption and horrors of the prison system and finally the way that the label of “prisoner” sticks hard in a post-prison life. The four-part retelling of the eventually overturned rape and assault convictions of the so-called Central Park Five – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and Raymond Santana – is stacked with moments that shock, anger, and move, but there’s one image that lingers perhaps more than any other (or anything else we’ve seen on TV this year). In the closing moments of episode 2, as the boys are read their guilty verdicts, DuVernay cuts to Richardson (played by Asante Blackk) sitting in the middle of a Harlem street and raising his trumpet to his lips, a pair of handcuffs dangling from his left wrist. Richardson plays a few tortured notes before we cut back to court to see him, wide-eyed in terror and shock, lower his head, closing out the episode.2. Arya Kills the Night King in Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%(Photo by HBO)The Stark family’s own Faceless (Wo)Man schools us on what that whole Braavos excursion was for: to wield an ancient Valyrian-steel dagger and kill the Game of Thrones villain many viewers thought was destined to face Jon “Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name” Snow in his final confrontation. But for every Jon Snow fan whining about how the Night King was his to kill, there’s an Arya Stark fan fist-pumping because the gal has mad skills. Yes, even silently stalking her prey and becoming virtually invisible when the undead masses are focused on their leader as he readies a death blow against the No. 1 target on his hit list, the Three-Eyed Raven. Stealthy assassin Arya would not let her brother go out like that.1. Avengers Assemble! from Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel Studios / )Think cutting off Avengers assemble mid-line at the end of Age of Ultron was a major blockbuster tease for MCU fans? They d only been waiting since 2012 when the first Avengers movie came out – diehard comic book fans have been anticipating to hear the famous battle cry on the big screen since the 60s. And everybody got what they came for in the fan service fantasia that is Avengers: Endgame. During the climatic battle, as Captain America tightens his shield, standing alone against Thanos and his cosmic hordes, Infinity War s fallen come rushing out of the portals. As the triumphant music swells, the heroes stand in unison, awaiting Cap s command, which comes softly growled, with the impact of destiny fulfilled at last. Since Disney released the first trailer for the film at Star Wars Celebration last April, the message has been loud and clear: The 42-year saga of the Skywalker family is ending. Star Wars itself may be a brand that will never die, but this version of it is on its final chapter.Fittingly enough, the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker continues this idea not only with its onscreen text, but a return to some ideas not yet used in the sequel trilogy. Let’s take a look at what this trailer offers us about the film and how it circles back to the first time audiences thought Star Wars was ending. The Rebellion RebornJoel MearesThe final moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were hopeful despite the crushing odds. General Leia Organa’s (Carrie Fisher) Resistance against the First Order numbered so few people, they could all be evacuated from Crait aboard the Millennium Falcon. But as this trailer makes clear – thanks to Poe Dameron’s (Oscar Isaac) line about good people needing leadership – the Resistance will be reinforced.A year has transpired since the events of both The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we certainly hope Leia, Poe, Finn (John Boyega), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and the other survivors of Crait were able to drum up support. But the new trailer makes it clear that the level of reinforcement will be staggering. A shot later in the trailer indicates an armada will form for one final battle against the First Order that may rival the Rebel fleet in Return of the Jedi.At the one-minute mark, we see this fleet of Resistance ships. It includes the Falcon, a number of Mon Cala frigates, and ships that fans are already speculating are the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian’s Razor Crest. But considering the echo of Return of the Jedi’s Rebel armada, we imagine these ships will still be outnumbered thanks to all those Imperial Star Destroyers glimpsed throughout the trailer. The Thrones of Sheev Palpatine and the Emperor s Return(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)The trailer is surprisingly heavy on thrones. The seat of Imperial power always followed Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) wherever he went, but early drafts of Return of the Jedi featured a throne room hiding deep in the core of the Imperial capital planet, a world creator George Lucas planned to name Had Abbadon, but later changed to Coruscant to align with the Expanded Universe. At 54 seconds into the trailer, we see a version of that Had Abbadon throne bathed in a misty light. Combined with the voice of Palpatine saying “long have I waited,” we can conclude this is a throne he fashioned during his years in hiding. Although, a subsequent shot at 1:59 of Rey seemingly confronting Palpatine sat upon that throne may indicate this is all another Force dream. But one throne is definitely not a dream: the seat the Emperor used in Return of the Jedi, which is clearly visible at 1:48 as Rey and Kylo prepare for a fight among the ruins of the throne room from the second Death Star. We have to admit this is a bold reuse of an Original Trilogy location as director J.J Abrams came under criticism for essentially remaking the original Star Wars with The Force Awakens. Placing the Sequel Trilogy’s primary protagonist and antagonist in that setting means Abrams intends to fully embrace aspects of Return of the Jedi to underscore that promised finality. Also, it just looks cool.At the same time, you may be wondering if Palpatine will actually appear in the film. The appearance of an Imperial Star Destroyer emerging from ice suggests to us the Emperor and his Empire will make a startling return.Threepio’s Sacrifice(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)And then, the John Williams score stops for a moment in which new character Babu Frick works on protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). The droid scans the people assembled (which includes Kerri Russell s Zorri Bliss) and Poe asks, What are you doing? The droid’s response: “Taking one last look, sir, at my friends.” It certainly suggests the character will make a noble sacrifice in The Rise of Skywalker. If we allow George Lucas and the filmmakers who followed him the notion that events in Star Wars rhyme like poetry, then there’s something genuinely poetic about Threepio sacrificing himself for the greater good. He is one of two characters to appear in all of the Skywalker films and he is one of Anakin Skywalker’s abiding legacies; his end would be fitting in this film. That is, of course, assuming whatever mission Threepio’s getting fitted for will end in his destruction. The scene appears to sync up with the shot from the D23 footage revealing Threepio with red eyes. We can probably assume he is being sent to a First Order base or Star Destroyer to obtain information. It could all be moments from his last hours or his line in this trailer could be played for laughs in the finished film as another example of his theatrical disposition.Or, to put it another way, this is an echo of his “I’m done for” moment in the Jundland Wastes back in the original Star Wars. But we hope Threepio (and R2-D2 for that matter) get a proper send-off. Whether that means they are destroyed or retired with Leia all depends on how the story plays out.A Green World And The Death Star RemainsJoel MearesThe bones of the second Death Star scattered throughout the trailer suggest a return to the forest moon of Endor. And, as it happens, we definitely see a lot of greenery in other parts of the trailer. But all of this could be another dodge, just as Jakku looked a lot like Tatooine. Abrams may want the scenery without the history, as landscapes pockmarked with the literal debris of previous Star Wars films continue to be highly effective images. If it is Endor, the message is clear: This story was meant to end there which is true (from a certain point of view). Going back to Lucas’s original drafts for Star Wars, the Empire (or the First Galactic Kingdom) was always meant to be defeated by forest-dwelling creatures. At the time, they were Wookies from the planet Yavin. But as things developed, Star Wars featured one Wookie and a rebel base situation on a jungle world. By the time of Return of the Jedi, Lucas reasoned people were too familiar with Wookies to find their homegrown rebellion against the Empire interesting, so he cut them in half and called the new creatures Ewoks – granted, the astronomical toy sales as the key motivation for the existence of Ewoks sounds as equally plausible. But Lucas never moved away from this forest planet conclusion and it appears Abrams will honor that idea in The Rise of Skywalker. At the same time, all those shots of the Death Star ruins caught up in the sea suggests this green world may be more diverse than the forest moon of Endor as Star Wars planets tend to feature a single biome. Explosions in the Star Wars galaxy do not obey normal physics, so it is possible parts of the second Death Star were flung clear across the quadrant to a world with forests, plains (as glimpsed in the first trailer), and vast seas. But if Abrams wants to evoke Endor, he might as well use Endor and give it these other geographic and biological features. We signed up for recurring scenery when Return of the Jedi featured a second Death Star.“Now Your Coming Together … Is Your Undoing”(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)But for all the provocative glimpses of an iceberg in space, Dominic Monahan’s character, space battles, and the Resistance riding horse-like creatures alongside Jannah (Naomi Ackie), one key line of dialogue stuck out to us: Palpatine’s declaration that “your coming together” will be someone’s undoing. The line is interesting as it echoes his Return of the Jedi proclamation that Luke s (Mark Hamill) faith in his friends is his greatest weakness. The conflict between the community Luke supports and isolationist Sith thinking is one of the great ongoing elements of Star Wars. Fans of the Knights of the Old Republic video games are given the choice to create strong bonds among the characters they meet or reject it all for the promise of Dark Side power. Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords complicates this even further as most of the characters who tag along on your adventure are Force-sensitive and have the potential to become Jedi or Sith. And in the Prequel Era, the isolation of the Jedi allows Palpatine to enact his plans without any sort of suspicion until it is far too late.It should also be mentioned that Luke calls out overconfidence as Palpatine s weakness. If the Emperor had made his return in The Last Jedi, we’d be inclined to believe the “coming together” he refers to in the trailer is the Resistance, but we’re going to take a leap of faith and suggest he is addressing Rey and Kylo here. Does that mean the characters will ultimately undermine each other and switch sides? That’s unlikely as the film represents the last hours of nine-film epic, but it may tie up the still dangling notion of the Force needing to be in balance. Are Kylo and Rey the real chosen ones from the prophecy introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace? There is time enough to just about make that work. Also, to come back to Palpatine s weaknesses, his perception of future events also undermines him, and one imagines whatever he foresees for Rey and Kylo will also backfire on him.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters December 20. Like this? tar in the film as the central hero, Nathan Drake, and it officially went into production in early 2020. It lands here after several shifts in the release schedule; let s hope it stays here. Ambulance (2022) Directed by: Michael BayStarring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Eiza Gonzalez, Garret DillahuntOpening on: February 18, 2022Michael Bay tones down his blockbuster tendencies just a bit (presumably) for this smaller-scale thriller about a pair of thieves who unknowingly rob an ambulance carrying a paramedic and a patient in critical condition. This remake of a Danish film has been in development since 2015, but filming finally got underway in January of 2021.

亚博电竞 Much like the DC Comics Multiverse itself, WarnerMedia’s plans for a film Multiverse are always changing. Projects are announced, but then seemingly go into hibernation. The stalwart of the line, Batman, always gets its movies made while Wonder Woman seems poised to join the Dark Knight as a reliable franchise. Superman, sadly, is caught between the worlds of reboots and rival ideas.Nevertheless, DC Films chief Walter Hamada recently revealed a plan to release six DC-related films a year in the coming decade – four will arrive in theaters while two will be made exclusively for HBO Max. The library is certainly deep enough to support such an endeavor. And thanks to Hamada embracing the multiverse concept, it seems plans are in place for a second Batman saga to coincide with Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. It all means DC fans will get a lot of content in the next 10 years.Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Batman v SupermanListen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Wonder Woman 1984Listen to our Podcast: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About AquamanThe change is the latest shockwave in the often incredible story of Warner Bros.’ attempts to bring the DC Multiverse to the screen. So before we take a look at the latest changes, let’s go back to the beginning of WB’s ambitious plans for its extended universe…In 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment announced a series of movies based on DC Comics characters. The original schedule included a two-part Justice League project and at least two films a year through 2020. Things did not go according to plan, with Justice League compressing its story into one film and projects like Flash experiencing constant delays. Despite projects shifting around the slate – and the critical backlash against Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League – the original 2014 master plan has been executed for the most part, with only 2018 missing a second DC-derived film and Cyborg disappearing entirely. And even as features like Aquaman and Shazam! went into production, the studio never stopped trying to get new projects off the ground utilizing the comic book characters and the universe initiated by 2013’s Man of Steel. The next several years will deliver a number of projects from that original slate and some surprises in the form of Aquaman 2 and The New Gods. On the TV/streaming front, Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is finally available on HBO Max.For now, the following represents everything we know about those projects and their place in the DC Films universe, as well as a few DC adaptations that will exist separate from the universe. (Want to see what the other camp has in store? Check out our breakdown of upcoming Marvel movies.)SEE: Most Anticipated 2021 Movies | Most Anticipated 2022 MoviesComing SoonThere is a lot that is uncertain about which DC Comics characters are coming to the big screen, who s bringing them there, and in what order — but nothing is uncertain about these first movies. They re in production, or in pre- or post-production, and we know exactly when they will be hitting theaters. (At least, we know the latest dates, and will update as those change with COVID-19 leaving the landscape a little uncertain.)The BatmanRelease Date: March 4, 2022What We Know: War for the Planet of the Apes’ Matt Reeves took over directing duties on The Batman following the departure of Ben Affleck, who intended to star, co-write, and direct. Creative differences saw his role reduced to star even as his personal problems overshadowed the ongoing question about his continued involvement. Late in January of 2019, Warner Bros. announced a release date while Affleck definitively stated he was leaving the cape and cowl behind. (Though not so definitively, if you skip down to our latest update on Flash). A new man behind the mask emerged that May when Robert Pattinson took over the role. That casting choice confirmed the story would revolve around a younger Batman, and Reeves has confirmed that, telling DC FanDome it will be set during Year Two when a serial killer is stalking Gotham. Across late summer and early Fall, the cast began to round out with Jeffrey Wright joining up as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano taking on The Riddler, and Zoe Kravitz signing on as Catwoman. In November, word broke indicating Colin Farrell would play The Penguin and Andy Serkis would be the new face of Alfred Pennyworth. Other cast members include Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Alex Ferns as Commissioner Pete Savage, John Turturro as Falcone, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Rumors also suggest a new Two-Face will also emerge. Stacking the film with almost all of the notable Batman villains is something of a change for modern Batman movies, which generally only use two at a time – although Batman Begins featured a whopping five when you count lesser known characters like Carmine Falcone, Joe Chill, and Victor Zsasz alongside The Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Despite a member of the crew – allegedly star Robert Pattinson himself – coming down with the coronavirus, the film seemed poised to hold its October 2021 release date until Dune took its slot during a subsequent change to the calendar. The film is now scheduled for March of 2022. During DC FanDome in October of 2021, Warner Bros. released a second trailer for the film, featuring a greater emphasis on Catwoman and the Riddler. Additionally, Reeves, Pattinson, and Kravitz offered some comments about the film, with Kravitz calling her Catwoman someone who “wants to fight for those who don’t have someone.” Reeves added that the film will feature a number of “iconic” moments with the character even if she doesn’t map 1:1 to comic book Catwoman.Recommended: Everything We Know About The Batman How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The project s ties to the established film continuity are questionable. Late in 2018, rumors began to emerge that Reeves’ vision for the film set it outside the Man of Steel universe as a “standalone” story, like Joker. The studio moved quickly to quash the rumors, but it now seems clear the film will exist in its own universe with a HBO Max spin-off series already in development.Black Adam(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: July 29, 2022What We Know: After listening to fans when he was initially interested in Shazam!, Johnson signed on to star in a film featuring that character’s greatest nemesis, Black Adam. Jaume Collet-Serra will direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with Noah Centineo on board as well to play Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher, whose superpower is his super strength and ability to grow  huge. At DC FanDome, Johnson showed two clips. One, produced by Jim Lee and Boss Logic which gave fans a quick rundown of the character s origins – formerly enslaved, he s in the pursuit of Justice the Black Adam way. The other introduced the idea of the Justice Society of America, and revealed that Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher would feature in the film. In late September 2020, Aldis Hodge emerged as Hawkman, but the news was soon tempered as the film lost its December 22, 2021 release date entirely during the shuffling of Warner Bros. release slate 10 days later. As for most of the project’s existence, it is once again unclear when it will be released. But with members of the cast already assembled, it is possible the film will arrive in 2023. Aiding this possibility: Sarah Shahi joined the cast in October with a role described as both a professor and freedom fighter. In the months following, Quintessa Swindell joined the cast as JSAer Cyclone and Marwan Kenzari signed up for an as-yet undisclosed role; Pierce Brosnan will star as Dr. Fate. Additional cast members include Bodhi Sabongui and James Cusati-Moyer. In March 2021, a release date was finally announced, with Johnson taking over billboards in Times Square to reveal the movie will release July 29, 2022. In early June, Shahi finally confirmed her character is Adrianna Tomaz – or some version of the DC character. The next month, Johnson released a photo teasing his Black Adam body suit and, later in July, announced he wrapped filming via his Instagram. A brief clip featuring the resurrection of Black Adam was released during the 2021 DC FanDome in October, suggesting the character may not be much of a morning person. A behind-the-scenes reel also offered a few glimpses of Dr. Fate’s helmet and Adam’s costume.(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, so their film worlds are definitely connected. But he is also a fairly complicated anti-hero when dealing with anyone else. Heroic one moment and brutal the next, Adam could emerge as the powerful leader of his own country – an idea straight from the comic books. At DC FanDome, Johnson hinted that the movie could feature an appearance from Superman, and sent a warning to all those in the Justice League: The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change. The Flash(Photo by DC)Release Date: November 4, 2022What We Know: A Flash film starring Ezra Miller as the Barry Allen featured in Justice League is finally getting made. After losing multiple directors – among them, Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa – and undergoing a title change from The Flash to Flashpoint and back again, the nature of the film is finally coming into focus as we ve learned that Allen will crash through multiple dimensions to change his mother s fate in an adaptation of DC s ambitious 2011 Flashpoint event comic book series, and meet various versions of some of DC s biggest heroes along the way. It helmer Andy Muschietti signed on as the project s fifth director in July, and at DC FanDome revealed a first look at concept art for Allen s new suit, which features embedded light and was made by Bruce Wayne. And someone else has signed on, too. Ben Affleck will return in a small, cameo-style role as the version of Batman we ve seen in Justice League, while Michael Keaton returns, too, as the Batman we met in 1989 s Batman; Muschietti told Vanity Fair that Keaton s role is substantial. Rudy Mancuso will also appear in an as-yet undisclosed role. In March of 2021, Kiersey Clemons, who signed on to play Iris West back when Famuyiwa was going to direct, recommitted to project. Additionally, word broke soon after indicating Maribel Verdú will play Barry’s mother Nora, but due to scheduling conflicts, Billy Crudup will not reprise his Justice League role as Barry’s father Henry. Ron Livingston will play the part instead. Michael Keaton, after suggesting he might leave the project, recommitted late in the summer. His appearance in the film was also teased during a sizzle reel for the film at DC FanDome 2021, which also featured a great look at Barry’s new suit and a first glimpse at Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: With the story focusing on the Flashpoint storyline – in which Barry’s attempt to save his mother wrecks the universe – the film will feature Ben Affleck as the Batman, as well as Michael Keaton, and may include other familiar faces. A promo package at DC FanDome also suggested Allen may encounter DC heroes from TV and streaming, with multiple clips of Watchmen playing as the panel discussed the Flashpoint possibilities. And considering how the original Flashpoint comic book radically altered the DC Comics universe, the film may bring about the end of the DCEU as we knew it.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Release Date: December 16, 2022What We Know: James Wan returns to direct the sequel. According to reports following the first film s stunning box office debut in December of 2018, the studio wanted Wan to develop the project while he decided whether or not to direct. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a co-writer on the first film, soon emerged to write the follow-up, and Warner Bros. set it for a 2022 release at the end of February last year. Presumably, any sequel storyline will feature the return of Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his thirst for revenge. We’re also going to presume a wedding between Arthur (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) will occur. Wan will direct the sequel after completing work on the horror film Malignant, due out later this year, and told DC FanDome that the movie will have a more serious tone compared with the original, and that new worlds will be explored. At the same panel, he was joined by Patrick Wilson, and the pair confirmed that Ocean Master will return for the sequel. For the moment, the film is still expected to be the DC holiday release of 2022 – a year now packed full of films based on comic book characters from Warner Bros. and other studios. And considering The Flash is expected in theaters a month earlier, Aquaman 2 may switch to a 2023 release. In early June 2021, director James Wan revealed the title of the film. A behind-the-scenes video showcased during October 2021’s DC FanDome unveiled a new look at Black Manta’s updated costume and a black version of Arthur’s armor. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Aquaman’s seas presumably now exist in a universe all their own. That said, it is always possible for one of the characters to seek his help in a stinger scene.Shazam: Fury of the Gods(Photo by DC)Release Date: June 2, 2023What We Know: Well, as of DC FanDome, we know that the title of the movie will be Fury of the Gods, and that Sinbad – who through the Mandela Effect will always be associated with the franchise – may be in it. Other than that, not much. What we do know is that director David F. Sandberg is back, along with star Zachary Levy and co-stars Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer. The credits stinger at the end of Shazam! revealed our hero could be about to face Mister Mind – one of the tiniest but most powerful villains in the DC canon. We also know the film will be the first of Warner Bros.’ DC offerings in 2023 – for the moment – thanks to the October 2020 scheduling shift. In February of 2021, Rachel Zegler joined the production in a reportedly key role, while it s also been announced Helen Mirren will play villain Hespera, daughter of the god Atlas. In April, Lucy Liu signed on to play Kalypso, one of Hespera’s sisters. In May, Mark Strong confirmed he would not return as Dr. Sivana, saying the film is going in a “different direction” than the one suggested in the first film’s stinger. That change of direction was also signaled during DC FanDome, thanks to a behind-the-scenes video featuring Mirren and Liu’s characters and a number of action scenes. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Black Adam, anyone? Although that film is not on Warner Bros. release schedule at the moment, the title character’s connection to Shazam means a crossover – and a confrontation – is inevitable. In DevelopmentWith its plans for a Justice League-centric film universe abandoned in favor of more standalone productions like Aquaman and Shazam!, Warner Bros. calendar during the first few years of the 2020s reveals a number of re-thought ideas and, to borrow a term from comics, new #1 issues. At one time, the studio planned to release as many as three films per year, a target it will hit in 2022. But it remains to be seen if the projects listed below will ramp up to maintain the pace.Batgirl(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Originally intended as Joss Whedon’s writing and directing debut in the DC Extended Universe, the project is now being written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson while the studio looks for a director. Presumably, the film will establish Barbara Gordon as the Batgirl of Gotham. Her relationship to the Birds of Prey will likely be established in a subsequent sequel to either film, if at all. But considering Hodson’s involvement in both films, she probably has a plan for Babs. In May of 2021, the project became active again with Ms. Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah signing on to helm the film, which is now set to be one of the first DC-related direct-to-HBO Max features. In July, the casting process seemingly narrowed in on Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Grace, and Haley Lu Richardson. Grace won the role later than month with J.K. Simmons entering negotiations to return as Commissioner Jim Gordan, a role he first took on in Justice League. During DC FanDome in October 2021, Grace described the character as a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined.” Co-director El Arbi added that the film will feature “realistic fights.” A piece of production art glimpsed during the presentation also suggests Batgirl will utilize a costume similar to her New 52 look in the comics. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Considering the project comes from developments outside of the original Justice League plan, it is difficult to guess how it will fit in. Perhaps Batgirl will be set sometime in the past or see Barbara taking up the cape and cowl after the Batman appears to quit.Blue Beetle(Photo by DC)What We Know: In February of 2021, word broke revealing Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm a film based on the Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. The character is a Mexican-American teenager living in Texas who discovers a scarab that turns out to be an alien battle suit. It gives him fantastic powers, but makes his life much more complicated. In August, Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña entered talks to play the lead role. The film joins Batgirl as one of two DC productions for HBO Max. Maridueña, Soto, and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer made an appearance at the October 2021 DC FanDome. All expressed enthusiasm for the project, with Dunnet-Alcocer saying the chance to showcase a Mexican-American superhero is a key part of the appeal. “That closeness of family is part of what sets him apart,” he said. An accompanying production painting also suggests the Blue Beetle costume will be surprisingly faithful to its comic book counterpart. How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Like Static Shock and some of the other projects, we’re going to assume the film takes place on the same Earth Barry establishes in The Flash. If so, it gives Jaime a chance to join whatever Justice League we might see in the future.Wonder Woman 3Release Date: TBAWhat We Know: Hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984’s box office success – well, at least in 2020 metrics – Warner Bros. announced a third film was being fast tracked. Both director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are set to return. Jenkins also said the film will finally bring Diana s film series to the present day. Of course, with Jenkins heading off to a galaxy far, far away to direct Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, it may be another four years (at least) before Wonder Woman returns. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Presuming Diana’s world still aligns to the DC Extended Universe continuity, Diana will finally be a public superhero and, perhaps, serving as an Amazonian ambassador to the world of men. In fact, reuniting her with her people after a century has a very dramatic appeal following the events of Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Of course, if the Wonder Woman films are retroactive placed elsewhere in the Multiverse, the story could go in just about any direction. The Other BatmanRelease Date: TBAWhat We Know: In a New York Times profile of Hamada, the DC Films chief made a curious reference to the Multiverse making two Batman feature film sagas possible. One will likely continue the story of The Batman while the other will … well, it’s anyone’s guess right now. The events of Flash may give Ben Affleck’s Batman a new face in the DCEU. Or, perhaps, Hamada has convinced him to keep the cowl on for subsequent appearances. Then again, maybe HBO Max will get its own Batman. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Again, this all depends on the DCEU as we knew it existing after The Flash. But presuming this Batman is meant to interact with the other DC heroes in the established film universe, it is easy to see that aspect of his career invade any solo movies he may star in. Or perhaps, he will finally take on allies in Gotham to support spinoffs like Nightwing and Batgirl.Green Lantern CorpsRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: Announced back with Cyborg in the 2014 masterplan, Green Lantern Corps continues to slowly move forward. In June of 2018, former DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns took over writing and producing the project through his production company, Mad Ghost Productions. According to the company website, the film will feature both the Silver Age Green Lantern, Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 film), and John Stewart, the Green Lantern voiced by Phil LaMarr in various Justice League animated series. An earlier concept developed by Man of Steel’s David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was said to be a sort of “Lethal Weapon in space” – a description which may still hold true for Johns’ concept as he worked with Lethal Weapon director Richard Donner for a number of years. With Johns participating in a Green Lantern television series for HBO Max, the project would seem to be postponed again though it is said to still be a priority for Warner Bros. Pictures. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Teased in a Justice League flashback, the lack of an Earthbound Green Lantern is part of the reason Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) chose the planet for conquest. But the film would presumably see the Corps correcting that mistake by revealing the brave humans involved in that organization. No doubt the fans of Jordan and Stewart – to say nothing of characters like Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, and G’Nort, who could potentially appear in the film – will be excited to see them in an ensemble. Additionally, the film would provide a perfect platform with which to introduce DC’s space-faring characters to a larger audience. At one time, the film was slotted for a 2020 release, but with the announcement of a HBO Max Green Lantern series, it is unclear if the film will ever surface.SupergirlRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: The Cloverfield Paradox’s Oren Uziel is reportedly writing a script based on the Girl of Steel. Like The Flash feature film, it will presumably ignore the successful television series on The CW and tell its own version of Kara Zor-El’s first few days as a superhero on Earth. With Man of Steel star Henry Cavill s DC future in doubt, it is unlikely that Superman will show up and help greet the cinematic Kara. The producers of the 1984 Supergirl film also tried to get then-Superman Christopher Reeve to appear in the film, but his presence was limited to a poster on a dorm room wall. In February 2021, The Young and the Restless’s Sasha Calle was cast as Kara for an appearance in The Flash feature. Presumably, she will lead Supergirl as well, but it currently unclear. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: If Calle continues as Kara, The Flash will determine if she’s the Supergirl of Barry’s Earth – our de facto DCEU – or one of the Mutliversal realities he visits in the film.Cyborg(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Ray Fisher has been set to star as Vic Stone in a 2020 Cyborg film since 2014, but no director or screenwriter were announced. Many doubted the film will ever materialize despite still being on the calendar. In September of 2018, Fisher suggested fans of the character may need to become more vocal to make the film a reality. In the summer of 2020, Fisher launched a campaign to expose Joss Whedon’s allegedly abusive behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. As the situation expanded to former DC Films chiefs Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, Fisher vowed never to work with current DC Films boss Walter Hamada – whom he alleged was pressuring him to take back his accusations about Johns. Subsequently, Cyborg’s planned role in The Flash was written out and, presumably, any chance of a solo film outing went with it.How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: Frankly, we’ll be surprised if Cyborg ever resurfaces in the current DC Films structure, Multiverse or no.BlackhawkRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: While it is unclear if Blackhawk will be part of the DC film universe, it is a favorite comic book of director Steven Spielberg. He even tried to get a Blackhawk movie off the ground in the 1980s. The current version of the project will see him direct a film based on the golden-age Quality Comics concept later bought by DC in 1957 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp adapting the concept. The main character is the leader of the Blackhawks squadron, a famed air outfit of seven ace pilots during World War II. When DC incorporated them into a post-war context, they became mercenaries, battled James Bond-style supervillains, and even flirted with becoming superheroes themselves! Considering the director’s fascination with the Second World War and aviation of the period, the original Golden Age version seems like the best fit, provided the film ever gets off the ground. How It Fits In The DC Multiverse: While current narrative conceits allow the film to take place in the past of Barry’s Earth, the Multiverse means the project could be as closely or loosely tied to other films as Spielberg wants. That is presuming, of course, he’s still interested in making it.Untitled Jared Leto Joker Project(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: According to reports, Jared Leto will star and serve as executive producer in his own solo Joker film – a deal which happens to be quite similar to Robbie’s involvement in Birds of Prey. Details are scarce, other than it will be a separate project from both the “Joker and Harley” concept and the standalone Joker. It will also spearhead a batch of films based on the characters featured in Suicide Squad, which means rumors of that Deadshot movie might be more than idle talk. Then again, it has been a long time since the actor has made any mention of returning to the role. Also, the announcement of a Peacemaker HBO Max series – centered on The Suicide Squad character played John Cena – may indicate the original spin-off plan has gone by the wayside. It would seem Leto’s time in the DC Multiverse is already over. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: The Leto Joker was not only featured in Suicide Squad, but is also the murderer of Batman’s second Robin, as implied in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As of Birds of Prey, his relationship with Harley is kaput, setting the two characters off in separate films series. If the “Joker and Harley” project is still happening, then it may serve as a capstone to the characters storylines across The Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and Leto’s Joker. But it may also serve as a replacement for that film as Robbie’s Harley projects may preclude “Joker and Harley.” Of course, Joker’s success – and Leto’s comments about being “alienated and upset” when it was announced – may mean the end of this version of the character. His appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the very nature of the Multiverse offer some glimmers of hope, however.Joker 2(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Release Date: TBDWhat We Know: Thanks to the success of the first Joker, a follow-up was inevitable, but details remained scarce through 2020. In May of 2021, word broke indicating the project is still in development with a surprising new tie to the larger DC Multiverse. Star Joaquin Phoenix and direct Todd Philipps will presumably return. Although the early reports were refuted, the more recent claim suggests Phillips is already writing the script. How It Fits Into the DC Multiverse: According to the May 2021 report, the film will tie into The Batman and its spinoff HBO Max series, Gotham PD. If this proves to be true, it is a change from the original film’s entirely standalone nature. Additionally, the two Joker films, The Batman, and Gotham PD would constitute the first true separate universe from the one established in Man of Steel.NightwingRelease Date: TBDWhat We Know: As of February 2018, The LEGO Batman Movie’s Chris McKay was still developing a project centered on the first Robin, Dick Grayson. A final draft from screenwriter Bill Dubuque was due at the time, but there has been no movement since. Reportedly, the film has been postponed in anticipation of The Batman, which may ultimately introduce its own version of Dick Grayson. In June of 2021, McKay told CinemaBlend, I hope it’s still a reality. I hope that we still get to make that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not lost yet. How It Fits in the DC Multiverse: As established in Justice League, the Robin costume in the Batcave is not Dick Grayson’s uniform, suggesting plans for Nightwing go all the way back to the 2014 masterplan. A solo film would presumably see the character living in Bludhaven (Grayson’s adopted city in the comics) and coming to grips with becoming his own hero. McKay also plans to direct a new Dungeons Dragons film and a feature film version of Johnny Quest, so it is hard to tell if Nightwing will happen anytime soon. Last time McKay was asked about it, he said fans will have
