Earlier this year, Starz introduced the world to a parallel universe in Counterpart. In it, Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons) — referred to by the series writing team as the Alpha Howard — met his counterpart from the other side, the Howard Prime (also Simmons).Howard Prime got Howard embroiled in spying between worlds. Howard took Howard Prime s place in a Berlin that fell into disarray after a devastating plague that the Prime world blamed on the Alpha world.Season 2 of Counterpart premieres on Sunday, less than a year after the first season. That’s because Starz was so confident in Counterpart they ordered two seasons back to back. The success of season 1 proved that was a wise investment.Counterpart stars Simmons, Nazanin Boniadi, and Betty Gabriel, along with creator Justin Marks and producer Jordan Horowitz, spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about the season 2, providing 10 things you should know about it before you watch.1. J.K. SIMMONS RETURNS AS HOWARD AND HOWARD PRIME(Photo by Starz)When Howard agreed to play Howard Prime for a short mission, he never expected to be stuck on the other side. It’s bad news for Howard, but good news for Simmons the actor.“Especially as both of them, to one extent or another, get a little bit better at pretending to be the other version of themselves, it definitely continues to add levels of complexity and continues to be an interesting challenge,” Simmons said. “I feel like these are two remarkably similar looking and yet distinctively different characters.”And which Howard does he know better after two seasons of playing them both?“My knee-jerk reaction was to say the kinder, gentler Howard,” Simmons said. “I think that may be starting to skew in the other direction. I obviously empathize with whichever one I’m playing in a given moment, but I’ve kind of always viewed the kinder, gentler Howard, the milder, meeker Howard, as the protagonist from when I first read the first episode. The scales are beginning to tip.”They tip further when Howard finds out about more secrets Howard Prime was keeping from him. Stay tuned.2. CLARE IS STILL A SPY — WITH REGRETSIn season 1, Peter Quayle (Harry Lloyd) found out that his wife Clare (Boniadi)’s other took over their marriage and even had his child. Season 2 finds them trying to fall in love now that both know the truth.“Can they find love in this place of they need each other to survive,” Boniadi asked. “I think season 2 for them is more about redefining the relationship and being completely honest with themselves, discovering themselves and therefore discovering themselves as they relate to this relationship.”But Clare still has a day job. Now she’s going on spy missions with a sense of doubt about whether her mission is truly just.“As the season goes on, you’ll see how that doubt plays out between her and Peter and the baby and the decisions they have to make, together and individually,” Boniadi said. “It’s a huge season of self-discovery for Clare. Season 2 is about her figuring out to live for herself.”3. NAYA TEMPLE IS HERE TO ROOT OUT ALL THE OTHERS(Photo by Starz)Gabriel joins the cast as Naya Temple, new to the Office of Interchange. Her job is to find the others who are there spying for the Prime world. You’ll see as she interviews Howard Prime and others, she takes a very gentle approach to spycraft.“It’s an approach that is designed to lull, I think, the people she’s investigating,” Gabriel said. “I think people let their guards down when they think that they’re not being intimidated or they’re not being threatened. Yes, people can crack under pressure, but I think people can also let things slip out when they’re comfortable. I think she definitely employs, at different moments, both tactics.”Naya is also dealing with her own personal crisis upon finding out the other universe exists.“I think there’s the awareness, the shocking awareness that there is this other version of her, but she doesn’t know who and where she is and what she does in her life,” Gabriel said. “She could be in a very different line of work. She could be part of a different religion. Who knows?”The arrival of Naya complicates the season for every Prime character trapped in our world.“The whole season 2 is about everybody from the other world being on the run,” Boniadi said. “Clare and Howard Prime have to worry about that.”4. EMILY WAKES UP(Photo by Starz)A big part of Howard s domestic life revolves around visiting the hospital to read to his comatose wife Emily (Olivia Williams), who wakes up in season 2. Marks offered a few clues about the secrets a waking Emily could reveal.“Emily and Emily Prime [are] both chasing after the Emily of the past,” Marks said. “So you have the present with two counterparts and then you’ve got this past that is a whole other version of oneself.”5. JAMES CROMWELL JOINS THE CAST, AND HE S GOT BAD NEWS FOR BOTH HOWARDS(Photo by Starz)Oscar nominee James Cromwell (Babe) joins Counterpart in episode 3 as the character Yanek, an officer at the Echo facility with whom Howard interacts quite a bit.“It was awesome,” Simmons said of sharing scenes with Cromwell. “He came in and really had the vast majority of the heavy lifting in most of our scenes together, certainly in our first couple of episodes. I was almost a spectator sitting there watching him, because my character just doesn’t have a lot to say early on in our relationship, and his character does.”Horowitz explained a little more about Yanek.“The Cromwell character with Howard as his prisoner furthers what I think the Howard/Howard stuff was doing in season 1,” Horowitz said. “[It] continues to have our Howard learn more about himself through seeing himself through his other character who is his peer in some respect.”Yanek’s theory is that when there are two of anything, one must ultimately destroy the other.“We call it the Highlander theory, ” Marks joked, referring to the 1986 film in which There can be only one, among a murderous group of immortals that pick each other off. “Now he may not be right, but he’s certainly got some really good points.”In the case of Clare, one already has destroyed the other, but Boniadi doesn’t feel every counterpart will meet a violent end.“It’s like you have two voices in your head or there’s two sides of you,” Boniadi sad. “Eventually for there to be some kind of resolution or survival, one has to win over the other one.”Naya has not met her counterpart, but she’s not out to destroy Naya Prime either.“I think ultimately there’s a spirit of reconciliation in her,” Gabriel said. “I think she wants to believe that two possibilities can exist so perhaps that applies to how she would approach her counterpart. I think she would be more curious in her other and more interested than threatened.”6. THE DOOR IS CLOSEDAfter the terrorist attack on our world, the door to Prime world remains shut. While politicians work toward a diplomatic reopening, many counterparts are stranded in their others’ worlds.“Both Howards are stuck on the other side,” Simmons said. “When season 2 opens, they are both in their other’s world and neither one is entirely happy about it.”This means there will be few scenes with two Howards, but each Howard will learn more about the other on their own.“We also elevate the stakes of the world through Management, which was introduced briefly in season 1 and is really the big player in season 2,” Horowitz said. “We really get a sense of what that hierarchical structure is of the worlds and who’s actually controlling and pulling the strings between those two worlds. I think that has really interesting effects on Howard and that core pursuit of which Howard is the true Howard.”Marks wouldn’t reveal exactly when the door might reopen, but teased, “Nothing can stay closed forever.”7. NAYA’S RELIGION AND FAMILY WILL PAY OFF(Photo by Starz)As introduced, Naya regularly prays to Mecca as part of her Muslim practice, and Gabriel said her religion remains a prominent theme in season 2.“It’s not leaned into too heavily, which I think is a good thing,” Gabriel said. “It is very much about her relationship to God and how that’s being challenged with the awareness of this other world; that she’s primarily there to do her jobm so we’ll see that more and more, her getting closer to the truth.”Naya also reveals to colleagues that she’s a mother. Tune in to see how motherhood plays into Naya’s role this season.8. SEASON 2 INCLUDES ANOTHER HUGE CLARE EPISODE(Photo by Starz)Episode 7 of season 1 was Clare’s flashback to show her past. Boniadi said the new season’s eighth episode is just as significant.“It doesn’t go into backstory, but it’s an evolution to Clare,” she said. “It was a very raw and meaningful episode. Episode eight is more about who is Clare? The real Clare, not the one that was made that she thought she was or believed she was. That’s what begins to unfold for her in episode eight.”9. THEY SAVED SOME OF THE BIGGEST TWISTS FOR SEASON 2 (AND HOPEFULLY 3)The two-season order allowed the creators of Counterpart to parse out some of the plot twists over two seasons. Even though they’re still waiting to hear if there will be a season 3, they have the confidence to hold a few more surprises.“Also there were things that we were going to reveal in season 2 that now we’re just like, ‘Well, let’s hope for a season 3, and we’ll hopefully get to reveal it then,’” Marks said.Simmons certainly hopes Counterpart continues, but he’s not putting any pressure on Marks.“Obviously people like to have jobs, but both creatively and — whatever — lifestyle, it’s very much a one-season-at-a-time mindset,” Simmons said. “At least for me and I know for Justin as well.”10. COUNTERPART TALENT HAVE GINORMOUS PROJECTS IN THE WORKS(Photo by Starz)Counterpart stars and producers have some major upcoming projects; for one, Simmons hopes to reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon in Matt Reeves Batman film, The Batman.“I have not met with Matt as of yet,” Simmons clarified. “I know that I signed up to do as many as three moviesm and I would love to get a chance to expand on Commissioner Gordon. I kind of dipped my toe in that water — so yeah, I hope so. There’s a lot of DC stuff going on so I hope it’s the Matt Reeves Batman. If not, I hope it’s something else.”Horowitz is producing Damien Chazelle’s upcoming Apple TV series.“It will be ambitious and interesting and will hopefully approach the TV space in a new way and find a fresh way of using that medium to tell story in a way that hopefully you haven’t seen told before,” Horowitz said. The show won’t be about music like Chazelle’s Whiplash and La La Land were, but music will always be a factor.“I think music is always going to be a part of Damien’s filmmaking,” Horowitz said. “Even in First Man, I think, music is a huge part of that film even though the film isn’t specifically about a musician or music itself.”Horowitz is also producing the movie Star Girl for Disney’s Streaming service, based on the YA novel by Jerry Spinelli.“It’s really a story about two kids in high school and ultimately about young love and not being afraid to be the person you want to be,” Horowitz said.Marks, a screenwriter on Top Gun: Maverick, has already completed a screenplay for The Jungle Book 2. He told Rotten Tomatoes that he and Jon Favreau co-wrote the sequel to their blockbuster film in December 2017, but they have to wait until the director finishes work on The Lion King revival before they start production. Marks revealed that the character Mowgli has aged along with the young actor, Neel Sethi, who starred in the 2016 film and has said he s up for a sequel.“Jon and I saw The Jungle Book story as a coming-of-age story and the second movie continues in that direction,” Marks said. “Really, if it’s done right, it should break some hearts with where it goes.” He added that the sequel will pull in more animal characters from author Rudyard Kipling’s book because “there’s such a wealth of characters in that world.”Boniadi stars in Hotel Mumbai, based on the 2008 terror attack on the Taj Hotel. Her character is a composite of two real guests at the Taj during the attack. Armie Hammer plays her husband.“It’s a story of what we do when we are faced with such tragedy and how are able to set aside our differences and band together just to survive,” she said. “Bullets don’t discriminate based on religion and ethnicity and race. She’s a Muslim woman, so these Islamic terrorists and extremist don’t stand for what she has been raised to believe is her religion. More than that, it’s about the resilience of the human spirit to overcome and set aside differences.”Gabriel will appear in Human Capital from director Marc Meyers, based on the book by Stephen Amidon. She plays the wife of Liev Schrieber’s character and calls it an “intense tale to tell.”Her Get Out director Jordan Peele also offered Gabriel a role in his Twilight Zone reboot, but it would have conflicted with Counterpart.Counterpart returns Sunday, December 9 on Starz.

Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Early in the film a number of people being interviewed talk about how wonderful it is to live in Australia, and then pivot with a “but…” to talk about the issue of race at the heart of the story. And you seem to say something similar: “It’s the best country on earth, but…” I think that’s something people living everywhere can relate to – The Australian Dream, the American dream. It is, and that s what so hard, right? Because for the last two years of my career, for two hours every week, I d be faced with this onslaught of booing. I lived in an apartment in Bondi with my fiancé at the time, living a great life, going to the beach every day, cafes – lifestyle couldn t be more perfect. But for two hours every week, I just dreaded going home to that football field and being subjected to what was happening. Now, having been retired and not being subjected to that, it s still a great country, but I still see what happens to my relatives. I still see what happens to Indigenous people, and I can t just say, Hey, I m OK with that because I ve made it.” I still want to be able to make a difference and have a voice to create an environment now, for the future, which is better. Because I ve got a little daughter that is going to have to grow up in this environment. I think that my role as a father and as a person who’s got a bit of a platform is to help continue the conversation and try and make a better environment for her and others to grow up in.Is that why you did the film? Because watching it, there was a part of me that was thinking, Damn, why is he putting himself through this again? Yeah, I think the biggest thing for me was, even when I retired, is that I don t think people still understood the situation: Why I, as an Indigenous person, was saying the things that I was saying, was representing my people in the way that I was; why, after learning our history of our country, I was having the stance that I was having. And I think what people are realizing now, after watching The Australian Dream, is they go, “Oh, I get it now. This is what s happened to Indigenous people. I never knew about it. They re now helping educate me. I can see now why, when people call you an ape, that is a racial comment that s been used for hundreds and hundreds of years across the world to say to you that you re no more than an animal, less than human.” They start to understand a little bit better. Whereas, if I was to just come out to the media again and do public speaking, people aren t really going to hear or understand the reason behind it, so I feel a documentary was the best platform to have that first comment back to the Australian public around why I am who I am, why I stand up for the values I have. Hopefully that helps them understand the journey that I m on.The film has already been released in Australia, where it’s renewed interest around the booing incident and Indigenous-white relations again. But you’re looking for international distribution now and I m curious, do you think it’s a uniquely Australian story or one that will connect globally? We re already seeing that people are connecting in America – at Telluride last week and here in Toronto – with the story. These are people of color, these are white people, who understand that in any country that has minorities, those minorities are going through racial tensions and issues. For me, this movie is a story of what happens to anyone who s being colonized, it s what happens to any Indigenous people who have been moved off their land or that have had to face the disadvantages of people coming to their country, and whether they have sovereignty or treaty or land rights – all of those things come into play in our documentary. People can connect to those issues. Here in Toronto, they connect with Indigenous people here, and I think in America they can connect with what happened with Colin Kaepernick and myself. So I think people connect in different ways to the documentary. I think people who have had racial tensions themselves can connect with things that have happened to them, and it can be quite emotional seeing and feeling for other people, the empathy you feel with watching me and others go through that.It s clear that a lot of people who already agree with the basic sentiments are likely going to see this movie. But watching I was wondering who you felt the key audience, the most important audience, for it was – and then how you get it in front of them? And are you optimistic it will have an impact – and optimistic generally about race relations in Australia? I think the biggest thing for me is huge optimism. I wouldn t be making this documentary if I didn t think it would help or I didn t know that the work this documentary would do post-cinema release, whether it be through a distributor like Netflix, or played through our schooling system [in Australia]. That s where it can make a massive impact and can make a massive difference for me. Yes, it would be incredible for it to be successful in the cinemas, to be picked up by Netflix – all tick, tick, tick. But how do you make sure everyone watches it? My optimism lies with the youth. I m not gonna lie, they re the future of our country. They re gonna look back on us in 20 years time and go, What the hell were we thinking? Why have we not got an Indigenous voice to Parliament? Why aren t Indigenous people part of our Constitution? All these things, we re so stupid. Why don t we just get it done? Unfortunately, I know it s going to take time, and I m OK with that. I m now part of things that are more proactive and supportive of Indigenous people who want to be successful, whether it be in business or around education. They re the spaces where I know I can make my biggest difference and where I m focusing that time.Thumbnail image: Dominik Magdziak Photography/WireImage, © Marvel Studios/© Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © 20th Century Fox, © Columbia Pictures, Becker EntertainmentThe Australian Dream is currently in Australian theaters. Ghcxuf Anthological true-crime series, reboots of a genre-defining classic, a reality hit starring a bevy of makeover masters, and a DC Comics property getting its due on the small screen are just a few of the seven acclaimed series returning this month. Catch up on all that and more with June 2020’s guide on what’s worth bingeing.    Dirty John 80% (USA Network)What it is: This true-crime anthology series from creator Alexandra Cunningham follows an intense, stranger-than-fiction tale of love gone wrong each season. While the first outing on Bravo from fall 2018 was a screen adaptation of the viral podcast charting the story of Debra Newell and her con artist husband John Meehan, Season 2, titled Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story, moves to USA Network to tell the story of Betty Broderick (Amanda Peet), who in 1991 was convicted of murdering her ex-husband Dan (Christian Slater) and his new wife Linda. Why you should watch it: Just like the podcast of its original source material, Dirty John’s first season is the kind of soapy crime drama best enjoyed with your feet up and a glass of wine. Elevating it from tabloid fodder, though, are the performances from Connie Britton as Debra, who was nominated for a Golden Globe, Eric Bana as John, and supporting turns from Juno Temple and Ozark Emmy winner Julia Garner. Season 2 premieres June 2 on USA Network.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6.5 hours (for the first season)Queer Eye 93% (Netflix)What it is: The early aughts’ boundary-pushing hit reality series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy gets a makeover of its own with this charming, seven-time Emmy-winning reboot on Netflix. Why you should watch it: If any other series captured the world’s collective heart over the last two years like Queer Eye has, we haven’t heard of it. Yes, its main hook lies in the fashionable, fabulous, and heartwarming makeovers the Queer Eye guys give rural American men and women (plus, their half-season trip to Japan), but you’ll stick around for the playful banter and true, deep friendship between the main cast of industry experts. It all packs a surprisingly emotional punch, so stock up on tissues! Season 5 premieres June 5 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 28 hours (for the first four seasons, plus Queer Eye: We re in Japan!)The Chi (Showtime)What it is: You’ve never seen Chicago like this. Created by Master of None Emmy winner and Queen and Slim screenwriter Lena Waithe, this Showtime series portrays the city’s South Side neighborhood as a tapestry of want and need, violence and love, and altogether human when our central heroes (played by Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Jacob Latimore, and Alex R. Hibbert) are brought together in unexpected ways after one life- and community-altering event. Why you should watch it: The Chi is an unflinching and authentic coming-of-age drama boasting some of the best actors and writers — well-known and otherwise — working today. In a time when racial violence still devastates minority communities and permeates our headlines, it offers a timely look at some of the social issues being debated today while still being nuanced, character-driven entertainment. The series went on a hiatus after Mitchell was fired for misconduct allegations, but Season 3 will finally premiere June 21 on Showtime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 20 hours (for the first two seasons)Doom Patrol 97% (HBO Max)What it is: From creator Jeremy Carver and starring Matt Bomer, April Bowlby, Timothy Dalton, Brendan Fraser, Diane Guerrero, and Joivan Wade, this acclaimed DC Comics series follows superpowered outcasts Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane after modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief) brings them together to save the world from one fantastical threat after another. Season 1 aired last year, streaming on DC Universe, but makes the jump to HBO Max as the platform’s inaugural comic book property. Why you should watch it: In the very best way, Carver and his writing room are dedicated to their source materials’ larger-than-life weirdness, violence, and heart and they have a cast that’s down to play along each step of the way. Season 2 premieres June 25 on HBO Max.Where to watch: Amazon, DC Universe, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 12.5 hours (for the first season)Search Party 96% (HBO Max)What it is: Part relationship drama, part coming-of-age comedy, part noir-tinged mystery thriller, Search Party is undefinable — but that’s what makes it so good. It’s the story of Dory (Alia Shawkat), Drew (John Reynolds), Elliot (John Early), and Portia (Meredith Hagner), who, on account of their own self-interest and general aimlessness, entangle themselves in the potentially sinister disappearance of their college classmate. Why you should watch it: Brooklyn-dwelling millennials have been beguiling subjects for many a film and TV auteur since Lena Dunham’s Girls, but never before have they been so exactingly (and excruciatingly) brought to life than in Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers, and Michael Showalter’s incisive satire-crime mystery cocktail. Season 3 premieres June 25 on HBO Max.Where to watch: Amazon, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first two seasons)The Twilight Zone 66% (CBS All Access)What it is: Did somebody say a reboot of creator Rod Sterling’s eerie and prescient anthological classic from 1959, now hosted and produced by modern master of horror Jordan Peele (an Oscar winner for Get Out and record-breaker for Us)? All we can say is: Sign us up.Why you should watch it: When it comes to horror series that episodically tackle various social and political matters through a sci-fi and technology-driven lens, Netflix’s Black Mirror has been the buzzy new kid on the block for five seasons strong.

(Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)All Stephen King TV Series, Miniseries, TV Movies RankedTV has been a favorite home to adaptations of Stephen King books and short stories into series, mini-series, and TV movies since 1979 TV series Salem s Lot. Whether developed for television or straight-to-video — remember video tapes? — TV and movie translations of, or based on, the horror master s work have long been fan favorites, even if they didn t receive much critical acclaim. But which is the best? Rotten Tomatoes dug up 30 Stephen King made-for-TV movies, TV shows, and streaming series and ranked them by their Tomatometer scores. The top 10 is made up of six of the most recent King adaptations — yay, progress! — including The Outsider, which hit HBO in 2020.Some titles, like The Dead Zone with Anthony Michael Hall, that happened before Peak TV don t have enough reviews of their seasons to get series-level scores and are listed alphabetically at the end of the list below (that is, you will see them first as you read down the page). Season 1 of The Dead Zone, for instance, has a 77% score on 13 reviews, but has no scores on its other five seasons and therefore doesn t meet the criteria for a series-level score (at least half of a show s seasons must have scores). You may also note that while films that are Certified Fresh are clearly labeled here, TV shows are Certified Fresh by season, and season badges won t show up in a mixed list of film and series-level scores — click through to the shows overview pages to find out how many seasons are Certified Fresh.Have a look at all Stephen King TV and streaming series and movies ranked by Tomatometer. Best-Reviewed Superhero TV Shows 20192019 was the year when superhero TV got super innovative, a trend reflected by the five series – four of which were in their debut seasons – that rose to the top of the heap in this category. Legion, one of the most daring superhero series of the decade, ended its three-season run in typically mindf ing fashion; The Boys won critics over with twists, swears, and a meta take on the genre; Doom Patrol gave us equal parts weirdness and heart (and DC Universe a hit); and the Michael B. Jordan-produced Raising Dion offered a new kind of hero in a story told with remarkable ambition. And then there was Damaon Lindelof’s Watchmen, which nuked the competition (squidded?) with a thrilling and relevant extension of Alan Moore’s story and some of the most jaw-dropping episodes of TV this year. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2019.
