One such character is She-Hulk; her origins are fascinating, and her conquest of the streaming landscape will fulfill a destiny that has eluded her for decades. At the same time, nothing in her world is that grandiose for long, so let’s take a look at what we know about the She-Hulk series so far and get a feel for what it might be like and how it could expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe.She-Hulk Was Created To Prevent A TV Show(Photo by ©Universal Television courtesy Everett Collection)Created by John Buscema and Stan Lee in 1980, Jennifer Walters is the cousin of Bruce Banner. After she is accidentally shot by mobsters looking for her father, Bruce volunteers to save her life with a blood transfusion. The procedure transfers some of his gamma-irradiated power into Jen. Initially, she Hulks out whenever she gets angry, but her powers and why they manifest become more nuanced over the years. Oh, also, she happens to be an attorney working in New York, which makes things a little bit tough when she starts showing up to court all green.Unlike her cousin (at least, up until Avengers: Endgame), Jennifer develops great control of her powers, maintaining her wits even if she ends up a little short-tempered as She-Hulk. Additionally, she can go for a very long without reverting to a purely human form. In fact, she prefers being somewhere between human and Hulk.But as legend tells it, She-Hulk was created at a time when Marvel was branching out into television with the very successful The Incredible Hulk TV series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. The show s producer, Kenneth Johnson, also had success with The Six Million Dollar Man spin-off, The Bionic Woman. Fearful he would think of a gender-swapped Hulk first, Marvel rushed She-Hulk into the pages of her very own title, The Savage She-Hulk, which ran for 25 issues. Afterward, She-Hulk would guest star in other comic titles and eventually join the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. She would also get her own title again, as well as various miniseries and short-run comics.(Photo by Marvel Comics)Once trademarks were secured, Marvel shopped Jen around as a potential series in her own right. She nearly made her TV debut in 1990 s The Death of the Incredible Hulk TV movie. ABC was also circling a She-Hulk series around the same time, but neither her cameo nor the series came to fruition. Soon after, Larry Cohen began working on a She-Hulk film with Brigitte Nielsen set to star, but that never materialized either.At one point in the 2010s, ABC and Marvel Television were also developing a female-led series that very well could have been another attempt at She-Hulk. That plan, whichever character it was based on, was snapped into dust when Marvel Studios took control of all TV operation in the summer of 2019. Around the same time, studio president Kevin Feige announced at the 2019 D23 Expo that She-Hulk would join the roster of Disney+ series. The other series announced that day included Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight, and while all four premises could make great television, She-Hulk has long been ready for prime time.A Lawyer By Day And An Avenger By Night(Photo by Marvel Comics)To a certain extent, the pitch for She-Hulk should be one of the easiest sells in television: a single female lawyer who also happens to be a Marvel superhero. In fact, this was the basis for a 2014 She-Hulk comic book series by writer Charles Soule – a practicing attorney at the time artist Javier Pulido, and colorist Munsta Vincente. After a number of years guest-starring in superhero books (and with a new She-Hulk taking Jen s place), Soule and his team moved her to the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, where she went into a small practice defending other super-powered beings. Along for the ride were the potentially supernatural paralegal Angie Huang, her pet monkey Hei Hei, and Patsy Walker (a.k.a. Hellcat) as a private eye on retainer.Jen’s cases included representing Doctor Doom’s son s attempt to obtain political asylum, clearing an aged Steve Rogers of a wrongful death wrap stemming all the way back to 1940s, and getting a small-time villain s widow her due share of a patent stolen by Stark Industries. It even had a “season-long mystery” in the form of the Blue File – a incident Jen was involved in but could not remember to save her life.Additionally, Jen’s office was in a building filled with other super-powered entrepreneurs, and by the series’ conclusion, Howard the Duck moved in down the hall. Playful with Marvel history and with gripping storytelling in its own right, the Soule She-Hulk series can be seen as a proof of concept for the TV show Marvel Television wanted to make or the show Marvel Studios will make.(Photo by Albert L. Gao cut her teeth as a writer on Rick and Morty – she wrote the meme-friendly Pickle Rick episode. Her other credits include episodes of Robot Chicken and The Mighty B! Coiro, meanwhile, is a veteran director from shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She is currently slated to helm the pilot and direct several more episodes.Of course, the comedy Gao and Coiro may mine from the comics is not limited to Soule’s time with the character; writers like John Byrne and Peter David also found the premise to be a solid driver of laughs. They also found the character offered plenty of dramatic stakes. A more recent run by writer Mariko Tamaki reframed Jen’s ability to Hulk out as a form of PTSD, using the concept for a more serious tale. Though she eventually returned to super-heroing as She-Hulk, the story illustrated just how malleable the character could be, and it re-established that Jen could live her life in a more human guise.The Face Of Jennifer Walters(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)After years of speculation and names like Betty Gilpin, Alison Brie, and Kerry Washington bandied about by fans, Marvel shocked everyone by signing up Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany to play Jen. As her BBC America series revealed, she is great with drama and no slouch with comedy. Various guest roles on shows like Parks and Recreation also underscored those comedic chops.That should work in her favor, as the series appears to be leaning more into that aspect of the character than, say, an Avengers-style adventure or the more serious drama of Tamaki’s story. But Maslany’s casting left people wondering if she will play Jen and She-Hulk, or if someone else will be her Lou Ferrigno and slather on some green paint to portray Shulkie. For much of her time in the comics, Jen has remained a statuesque (and green) force for justice and the law. Maslany’s relatively diminutive height suggests one of two equally valid options: she will Hulk out when necessary or, like Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce in Avengers: Endgame, her entire performance will be motion captured so Jen can be animated into every scene. These Marvel shows are said to be quite expensive, so the money is there to do it. Alternatively, the story could see Jen learning to balance herself with a more Hulk-half and see her practicing law as She-Hulk by the end of the first season. Well, assuming She-Hulk is intended as a multi-season series, of course. Marvel has been imprecise about its status as a limited series like WandaVision or Loki.The fact is, there is a great story to tell with Maslany as Jen – and that’s before you consider all of the Marvel elements it could introduce or even reintroduce.The Courts As A Window Into Marvel’s Manhattan(Photo by Marvel Comics)When Marvel Television and Marvel Studios became separate corporate entities thanks to a restructuring at Disney, the plan to keep everything connected dissipated, leaving Manhattan as the purview of the Netflix Defenders scheme. Marvel’s other famous lawyer, Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox), led the way on Daredevil while Patsy Walker transformed into Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) on Jessica Jones.But when plans for the Marvel series on Disney+ became public, Netflix became less interested in committing to more Defenders. Across 2018 and 2019, a bloodbath ensued as Luke Cage, Daredevil, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and Jessica Jones were all cancelled. Though various reasons were offered, it was clear Disney becoming a direct competitor of Netflix soured the relationship.As a New York-based lawyer – sometimes with her own firm, sometimes as part of a bigger and more prestigious one – Jen is the perfect character to re-introduce some of these lost Manhattan residents. We’d love to see Taylor return as a reformed Hellcat who works for Jen as a repayment for getting her out of the Raft early. We’d also love to see the character re-imagined as a more direct version of the Patsy Walker seen in the pages of Soule s She-Hulk. Marvel has something of a non-compete clause with Netflix regarding the characters on those shows. The clause is set to expire two years after each show debuted its final season on Netflix, but Marvel cannot even begin to talk about developing shows with the characters in the interim. As it happens, characters from Luke Cage are, presumably, available to Marvel Studios now as that series debuted its final season on June 18, 2018. Matt Murdoch, Foggy, and the rest of Daredevil s crew will likely be free for use in a month s time. Jessica Jones characters, however, must remain sidelined until June 14, 2021. The situation may keep Hellcat from being part of the main She-Hulk cast, but Marvel could probably pull off a special guest appearance by Cox’s Murdoch if they are so inclined.Meanwhile, She-Hulk could also suggest things like the Baxter Building (home of the Fantastic Four), Doctor Doom’s homeland of Latveria, or, potentially, the Mutant teens who call Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in Westchester County home.That’s one of the great things about She-Hulk as a format: it can be as small as a courtroom drama or go as big as an Avengers film.A Phase 4 (Or Phase 5) Surprise(Photo by Marvel Comics)It is currently unclear when the series will debut on Disney+. Going by the original D23 plan, it was set to be part of the MCU’s Phase 5 calendar and premiere sometime after Hawkeye. But with that series still lacking a critical star, it appears She-Hulk is moving into the post-Loki slot for the end of Phase 4 and a potential late 2021 release. When he did finally debut in theaters, under the guidance of Sam Raimi, he not only kicked off one of the most successful superhero franchises ever, but also helped lay the groundwork for the massive paradigm shift in Hollywood that would eventually bring us the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, for starters. Of course, Sony Pictures efforts to retain the rights to the character have famously resulted in two reboots and a parallel animated series, but the results overall have been rather spectacular. Raimi s original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the MCU-related films with Tom Holland in the role, and the animated Into the Spider-Verse have all largely been critically acclaimed money-makers, and even the first of Andrew Garfield s two outings as the famous wallcrawler is generally well regarded. I just wouldn t know how to follow up those two films because those are his babies.”Waititi is still in conversation with Marvel about future films, however.“I’m not doing that movie, but I’m still hanging out with those guys and talking about new stuff,” he confirmed. “I don t know what it might be yet, but, yeah, I want to do another movie with them for sure.

It’s a reimagining of the late 14th-century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” which tells one of the most well-known stories in Arthurian legend canon – the tale of Sir Gawain, who accepts a terrifying challenge from a stranger on Christmas, and the quest he must embark on one year later.It was a bold choice for Lowery to adapt a 700-year-old chivalric romance for the 21st century, and one that required a number of changes so that a story so profoundly rooted in the morality and literary style of the Middle Ages resonated with a modern audience. Here are five ways he changed the original Arthurian epic to do just that… and one important way he kept the medieval story intact.The Green Knight Gets Wild(Photo by © A24)In Lowery’s vision of Arthurian legend, the Green Knight is a primal supernatural entity, one whose ties to the natural world are right in his design. He is the Green Man of ancient myth come to life with his bark face accented by a beard made of curling twigs. Neither fully man nor tree, he harkens back to an older, pagan time when the lines between the natural world and the supernatural were far more blurred. Even the offshoot “branches” that crown his head vaguely evoke the horns of Cernunnos, the Celtic Horned God and lord of wild things. It’s deliberate character design meant to evoke the ancient unease of humanity realizing it doesn’t have full control of the world, and it’s a smart decision on Lowery’s part.The design of the Green Knight in the original poem is a less wild thing; the antagonist is more nobleman who just happens to be green. When Arthur’s court meets him, he’s kitted out in forest green finery, with emeralds and jewels encrusting his ax and bridle, his fine-spun clothes trimmed with silk and ermine. It was a striking image, one that made an impression in the late 14th century, but one that today would fail to impress modern moviegoers who have seen it all. By stripping the sense of rich civility from the Green Knight, Lowery draws out the inherent otherness of the character and tinges it with horror.Mother Knows Best: Recasting Morgan le Fay and Enriching Her Motivation(Photo by © A24)When the original poem was written, it was during a time in the Middle Ages in which Morgan le Fay’s role in Arthurian legend was transitioning from benevolent protector to villain. As patriarchal Christian morality took root and began heavily influencing writing of the era, Morgan (Arthur’s half-sibling), previously an amalgam of earlier revered, magical female Celtic deities, was recast as a malevolent sorceress of evil intent. Her role was often to play the antagonist in the mythology, intent on causing chaos in her half-brother’s court.Her motivations for summoning the Green Knight and arranging the challenge in the original poem were fittingly petty: hoping Arthur would take up the challenge, Morgan merely wanted to frighten Guinevere in a bit of spite. Gawain taking up the challenge instead was coincidental. That’s a flimsy and wildly outdated premise to build a story around in modern times. Lowery changed Morgan’s connection to Gawain and, in doing so, changed her motivation. By making Morgan Gawain’s mother in the film, her game, while harsh, made much more sense. A petty, inexplicably cruel woman sending a man to his potential death because she’s miffed at another woman is nonsensical and regressive; but a powerful woman secretly pushing her son to find his greatness is something one can understand, if not necessarily agree with.Sir Gawain: Peak Millennial(Photo by © A24)As with so many things in “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” what makes perfect sense in a medieval poem doesn’t translate so well to the big screen in 2021. This is arguably never truer than with Gawain himself. Dev Patel’s portrayal of Gawain is vastly different than the Gawain of the poem; while he’s less likable, he’s also more relatable.Poem Gawain was not so much a character in his own right, but a noble archetype and morality tale in one. He was meant to be the chivalric ideal and had the depiction to match. In fact, Gawain held himself to such a high standard in the poem that his test was to learn he was human and fallible, and that perfection is something that only God himself can achieve. Gawain is pious and pure, humble and extraordinarily chaste, courageous and benevolent to all he meets.Thus, Lowery was presented with the Captain America problem: how does one make a character so inherently perfect interesting? Marvel achieved it not by changing Captain America, but by changing the world around him. Lowery achieved it by doing the opposite: keeping the world the same but changing Gawain. His Gawain is far more flawed than the version in the poem, an entitled wastrel who is squandering his potential in sex and drink. Purity and chastity are not in movie Gawain’s nature and his test, in many ways, is the opposite of the test presented in the source. Poem Gawain had to learn that even great knights can wobble; movie Gawain had to see if he could even be great at all.As a heroic ideal, The Green Knight’s protagonist is quite lacking, but as a character whose struggle makes sense for moviegoers today, he’s incredibly timely.Making New Frenemies(Photo by © A24)“Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” is a true hero’s journey, an epic quest of man vs. nature, but moreover, of man vs. himself. There are only a handful of characters in the original poem and Gawain spends large chunks of the story by himself. For the purposes of depicting the Christ-like trials of a noble knight in a chivalric romance, it works; for a modern movie adaptation, however, it makes for an awfully boring on-screen story.Lowery wisely recognizes this and addresses it by adding three characters who seamlessly blend into the story while playing key roles in Gawain’s growth. Essel (Alicia Vikander) is the earthly temptation he must set aside to fully devote himself to his quest; the Scavenger (Barry Keoghan) is meant to shatter the naiveté and sheltered worldview Gawain holds; Winifred (Erin Kellyman) presents Gawain with a test of his altruism and chivalry. Each brings something essential that Gawain must learn in order to evolve, and their use provides a blueprint for how to add original characters to Arthurian adaptations that still feel as vital and necessary to the story as any characters in the old mythology.Bye, Bye to The Wild – and Potentially Slow – Hunt (Photo by © A24)Adapting an older story requires an insightful balance of knowing what to keep and what to cut: Too slavishly devote yourself to the original source and you risk dragging the story down with unnecessary scenes; deviate too far and you risk undermining the very aspects that made the original story so beloved in the first place.While Lowery certainly added to the story, he also excised certain parts with a decisive hand. The most impactful edit was Lowery’s compression of the poem’s lengthily told three-day hunting scene, during which readers follow Lord Bertilak as he rides out each day to hunt, with the third and final day offering a parallel narrative with Bertilak chasing a wily and evasive fox as Gawain tries to evade Lady Bertilak’s aggressive advances back at the castle. It’s a great bit of symbolism, but an unnecessary part of the story that would have further dragged down the already slow-burn movie.Condensing it kept the crux of Gawain’s quandary intact in the film while not killing the momentum that was building up heading into the third act.…And What Lowery Smartly Chose NOT To Change(Photo by © A24)Though Lowery took plenty of liberties with the original poem, The Green Knight remains true to the spirit of its source. So many layers are packed into “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” but what truly holds it up are two tentpole themes that remain searingly relevant: the duality of the pagan natural world vs. ordered Christianity, and the core story of a knight discovering the man he truly is. Remove or change other elements and the story still largely stands on its own, but remove those two foundational pillars and it comes crashing down.Lowery’s instincts for what to change and what to leave intact served him well, and the result is the old, archetypal story told in a fresh new way. One that feels urgent and modern, and yet true to its source. After Hollywood’s recent, multiple failed attempts to bring more Arthurian stories to the big screen, it might look to The Green Knight for an example of how to make Camelot and its endless well of stories relevant again.The Green Knight is in theaters now. The site was still hosted on Design Reactor s servers, but the trio decided that Senh would leave the company to devote himself to his passion project, and be replaced by a new Creative Director. Senh left the Bay Area and went back to Sacramento, but the accumulative work burnt him out. Even Rotten Tomatoes – where everything was still manual and included treks to the library to copy review quotes from newspapers – had lost its luster. The site stopped being updated for several weeks. People wrote in asking what was happening. Perhaps, Senh thought, he’d take a crack at his original love: Filmmaking.Senh got in touch with two Sacramento high school friends: Bobby Ly, an accountant who clerked at his family s Chinese video store where Senh rented Hong Kong movies, and Binh Ngo, who at the time was working the night shift at a veterinarian clinic. Bobby would nominally update Rotten Tomatoes, while Senh and Binh set out to shoot a movie, using Robert Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew – which chronicles the director’s early and frugal days in the industry – as a guide and bible. The plan was to adapt horror novelist Dean Koontz’s novel Fear Nothing, whose protagonist has xeroderma pigmentosum, a genetic disorder that causes severe sunburn and skin pigmentation after brief daylight exposure, something that would facilitate many night shoots. After a few weeks, they had enough footage to show to close friends and family, including Binh’s sister, whose response was blunt: “This is horrible.”“How did that feel?” I asked Senh.“Not good,” he says, laughing.Did negative reviews save Rotten Tomatoes? Maybe, but both Bobby and Binh had convinced Senh that Rotten Tomatoes was still worth pursuing. The three resumed work on the site. I could tell because I was in high school in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley, and traffic was getting worse every day. Modern life had evolved computers from luxury to necessity, and mass adoption of the Internet was connecting the world in an unfathomably exciting new way. And with that, new opportunities to get rich. An idea, presented well enough, was enough to get venture capitalists to rattle their bank accounts for cash to invest, as a billion dollars in frenzied speculation transformed the Bay Area.Design Reactor was growing, significantly helped along by a deal with Disney to create and maintain everything Disney Channel online. Things were going well enough that they hired a CFO, Lily Chi, and a Marketing Director, Paul Lee, who had actually been one of Design Reactor’s co-founders.Still, people weren’t exactly tripping over themselves to invest in a web design firm. It was the ’90s. They wanted edgy, extreme. Rotten Tomatoes was identified as the breakthrough Trojan horse. Senh accepted an offer from Patrick and Stephen to reunite, bringing Binh and Bobby with him. Patrick, who was the best of the group when it came to working with people and managing relationships, raised .2 million across 1999. Rotten Tomatoes aimed to be incorporated January 2000. Design Reactor and its business would be taken over by another company in San Jose at that point. All 25 of its current employees elected to make the jump over to Rotten Tomatoes the next year.Meanwhile, with Rotten Tomatoes back in the fold, Design Reactor’s Susan Nakasora was brought over to RT right away. She had an English degree, and her job was to copyedit everything on site, including the quotes from reviews that you see on a movie’s page. Binh, relatively along for the ride, was installed as Rotten Tomatoes’ first editor-in-chief, though most of the writing involved creating spotlight copy on the homepage pointing to movies around the site. This was the start of the editorial team at Rotten Tomatoes.Binh, jokingly reflecting on the job, told me: “I kept on thinking that I only wrote two sentences through all my time there: ‘Click here’ and ‘Read more. ”(It wouldn’t be until November 2004 that Rotten Tomatoes would expand into news coverage, with features, interviews, and more. The first article we posted reported on development rumors of a Halo movie. Some things never change.)During this time, publicists began inviting staff to early movie screenings. Binh and Senh recall showing up and being denied entry the first few times, as studio representatives believed their invites to be fake. One investor who was part of the .2 million angel funding had gotten cold feet, but Disney paying up on accounts receivable as Design Reactor was spun off to independence netted the team another million. Early after incorporating (under the name Incfusion, because something called Rotten Tomatoes was not considered a legitimate business), Patrick brokered a deal to have mySimon.com, a price search engine, integrated onto the site. Though no one could know it at the time, the monthly income from the deal would be crucial to RT’s imminent survival.On April 14, the bubble officially burst as the Nasdaq dropped 9% in one day. By the end of the week, the loss would be 25%, and by the end of the year, .75 trillion in Internet stock will have evaporated. Traffic in the Bay Area returns to normal.A 13-digit loss in market valuation spooked investors and the money dried up from the landscape. As other startups started dying overnight, the Rotten Tomatoes team knew hard decisions would have to be made.“At the end of the day, you can’t really fight the numbers,” Paul says. “We had an all-hands meeting, where we were honest with everybody that we have to start reducing headcount. We wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to find something else. Everyone else took a 30%-50% pay cut. Patrick himself decided to move into the office.“Patrick and I were living off our savings, and one day, he had this idea that rent was his biggest expense,” Paul told us in our original oral history. “Using the justification that he was a neat freak (believe me, Patrick is borderline obsessive-compulsive when it comes to cleanliness), he kind of wondered aloud whether he could just simply move out of his apartment and live in the office.”Patrick recalled: “It wasn’t bad. We had those pretty nice couches that could expand out. I had a little fold-out mattress and a sleeping bag, so I was pretty well hidden in case a security guard came through.”Weekdays, they would work expanding the site. Weekends often saw casino trips to play poker, even down to Vegas, and hitting up the buffet line because food was cheap. Jet Li invited everyone to his house and treated them to magnificent Mongolian BBQ. Stephen got to know Ebert, and would travel to Chicago at his invitation to meet at film events he organized. A former employee who landed at Pixar got them tours and screenings at their campus down the street. And those late encounters with security at the office were never hard to explain because Senh, who disliked showing up before noon, would tinker on Rotten Tomatoes deep into the night. Some would stick around to watch movies, as others set up for that great gathering of those dotcom days: LAN parties.In our oral history, Susan recalled: “For a while there was an RT guild in World of Warcraft, consisting of several current (for that time) and past employees, plus some friends. The guild’s tabard symbol was a shape that somewhat resembled a tomato splat. Binh was awesome – a gnome warrior who wore a deep sea diving helmet.”“We would all end up playing Diablo II, until like two in the morning,” Patrick tells me. “Either fall asleep in the office or go home, and then do it again. And then on the weekends, Friday night, we would play until six in the morning, until we’re literally falling asleep at our computers.”Dance Dance Revolution was another favorite party game, which Binh suspects didn t ingratiate the team with their office neighbor the floor below.The brand was on the brink, and times were rough, but everyone still believed in Rotten Tomatoes as a viable business. They were devoted to the site, but also to each other, working on this shared mission and developing a small, unique Asian-American community in this dingy Bay Area office.Patrick’s hunch to keep your friends close after graduating was right. That was the uniqueness I felt when I first arrived – a lingering philosophy of kindness and generosity. I asked if anyone considered leaving.“No, not really,” Stephen says. “I just really enjoyed working on the project during those years. I enjoyed working with Senh and Pat and Paul. Despite all of the business challenges, the site continued to grow, the user base continued to grow. It was a steady path upwards.”There was a sense of family at Rotten Tomatoes, and for some it would become literal: Senh ended up marrying Binh’s cousin, while Susan married Patrick’s brother, Bryan.BETTER LUCK TODAY: THE SITE RECOVERS AND STARTS GIVING BACK TO ASIAN-AMERICAN CREATIVES Spider-Man: Far From Home has a lot on its shoulders. Plus, it’s only been about six months since the release of another acclaimed Spider-Man movie, the Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Fortunately, such responsibility is met with great power, according to critics.This movie takes Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spidey on a European field trip and sees him reluctantly fighting elemental monsters alongside Nick Fury (Samuel L. Originally developed as a show for Fox, it always took the concepts of superpowers and the DC Comics metahumans a metaphor for something much closer to our reality. Its inciting incident — the deployment of a vaccine said to prevent a virulent disease, but truly design to stimulate the metagenes in the population of Freeland — has its origins in things like the Tuskegee Study and the CIA’s alleged introduction of crack cocaine into the inner cities in the 1980s.In the world of Black Lightning, the meta-vaccine operation was conducted by a shadowy government agency known as the ASA, and their tactics have left a lasting mark on Freeland as a whole and central character Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) in particular. Even as the series sprawled out to tell the tales of Jefferson’s family, his arch-rival Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III), and Jefferson s mentor Peter Gambi (James Remar), it’s never lost sight of the ASA. In fact, it is possible they are Black Lightning’s ultimate adversaries.But at the moment, they also have Freeland in lockdown – an occupation officially meant to keep Freeland’s meta population safe from agents of a foreign power, Markovia, desperate to snatch up metas in a latter-day arms race. The story may echo the CIA’s activities during the later parts of the Cold War, but in illustrating the effects of an actual military occupation on U.S. soil, the show enters unprecedented ground. The stakes have never been higher. As Williams put it when Rotten Tomatoes visited the Atlanta soundstages where the show is produced, “It s much more than just corner boys and Tobias trying to just take over the city for his own power. In fact, we got the distinct impression Freeland’s old normal will never be restored.But, as Williams told us, “The ‘back to normal’ Freeland was never like this idealistic place It was always, you know, it was flawed. There was crime. It s why [Jefferson] had to originally put the suit back on in the first place.” Nonetheless, Williams felt it is important for the Occupation to end, even if “we get back to just that” because Freeland is ultimately part of the United States and rights are being trampled on in the current situation.Granted, the ASA Agent-in-Charge, Odell (Bill Duke), would disagree. When we spoke to Duke, he mentioned Odell firmly believes the Occupation is ultimately protecting Americans from a rogue nation. His methods, though, leave much to be desired. For instance, he kept both Jefferson and his wife, Dr. Lynn Stewart’s (Christine Adams) in a mandatory hold at a secret facility for months and once he had to let them go, he planted subliminal messages in Lynn s living space suggesting she experiment with Green Light, the power-enhancing drug taking the place for crack in the program’s ongoing storyline.When it was suggested manipulating Lynn was evil, Duke said, What really is evil? It is a question the show is gearing up to address, but in the interim, Lynn is abusing Green Light.“You’re definitely going to see Lynn in a way you ve never seen her before,” Adams said of Lynn under the drug’s influence. Her first few attempts to synthesize a safe, non-addictive Green Light gave her increased brain efficiency and allowed her to find a cure for a Markovian virus meant to kill Freeland s meta population. But it’s also made her obsessive about her work and created another rift between her and Jefferson.Then again, the fragility of their marriage is another one of the show’s ongoing plots.“I think it definitely makes sense for their relationship to go like this,” Adams said. But she added the Occupation is putting a very specific stress on them. “They know too much. They ve seen too much. I mean, they would have to be PTSD if nothing else … like, put them all in therapy. That s what I would do.”Their time at The Pit, the ASA’s black site in Freeland, also put Black Lightning off his footing, but Williams suggested the change in outlook may ultimately be beneficial.“I think he s angrier, and I think he has the right to be,” he said. “Going from season 1, his school was successful, his daughters were safe, and then you progress to being locked up for over a month and then coming out to an occupation and nobody s safe. He s tried to do things the right way and play by the rules and sees the repercussions of that.”At the moment, an agreement with Odell means he cannot act against the ASA, but it is only a matter of time before he learns the full scope of the agent’s machinations and, perhaps, joins the Resistance.And then there’s Tobias. Though he is locked up in The Pit, Williams said that Jefferson’s feelings about Tobias haven t changed.The feeling is mutual. Though Jones was unwilling to suggest when or how Tobias might escape The Pit, he said Black Lightning is the only person who should worry if and when that prison break occurs.“I think it s always going to be Black Lightning,” he added, though he said another confrontation between Tobias and the unkillable Lala (William Catlett) is inevitable. “[They’re] almost like Kobe and Shaq, where they re on the same team, kind of, but then again they re not. You know? One has a way of doing things, and the other one doesn t. It s kind of like I need the other one to get out of the way so I can do my thing the way I do it. I think they ll always conflict and run into each other.”Jefferson and Lynn’s detention at The Pit also left their children Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) to figure out life in the Occupation on their own. Anissa chose to formalize her alternate persona of Blackbird as a hero of the burgeoning Resistance — and establish an underground railroad of sorts for metas trying to escape Freeland — while Jennifer tried her best to be a “normal” teenager.According to Nafessa Williams, Blackbird and Anissa’s earlier hero persona of Thunder represent two sides of the character.“[Blackbird] doesn t have it all together and she doesn t always do the right thing the way Thunder does, but she does it her way because she thinks it s the right way and she thinks it s what Freeland needs right now.”The impulsiveness of Blackbird may cause problems down the line – particularly with the Perdi in South Freeland – but Williams sees the alter-ego as part of Anissa coming into her own.“She s really seeing herself as an adult and realizing that she runs her life,” Williams said. Nevertheless, expect some mistakes as Anissa finds her way to adulthood.But one aspect of Anissa’s life that will be on firmer ground during the Occupation is her relationship with shapeshifter Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy) – a romance teased since the early episodes of the show, but finally a real thing in season 3.“I think Anissa is really happy to have found someone who understands her,” Williams said of the relationship. “She hasn t told anyone really who she is other than her family, so to be able to open up and trust someone else and let them in on who she really is and understand them for who they are, I think it s a match.”And, as it happens, Grace has also proved her abilities will aid Anissa in getting out of tight scrapes, like Odell’s ill-timed visit in last week’s episode.Jennifer, meanwhile, has acclimated to curfews, traffic stops, and the ASA’s stated mission a little too well. Bizarrely, the confines of the Occupation gave Jennifer an added sense of independence – something Odell hopes to utilize for his own ends.“He s counting on being able to take her humanity and use it,” McClain said. The shadowy agent has already helped her discover new powers which may indicate she is stronger than her father. Also, “[Odell’s] telling her, ‘Your father s wrong here, your father s methods aren t working. You know what I m saying? They haven t worked for years.’”Those sorts of poisonous words could lead to a confrontation between Jennifer and Jefferson before too long.McClain also teased Lynn’s preoccupation with work at The Pit will beco
