亚博网址官方采用百度引擎3(Baidu 1)Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. With that in mind, last week we looked back at 12 of the year’s top Fresh Development stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review continues this week with the “Rotten Ideas” of the year (setting aside, of course, most of the COVID-19-related bad news, which is all bad).JANUARY: TRANSFORMERS TO BE REBOOTED (POSSIBLY AS BEAST WARS, RAWWWRRR) (Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)In 2018, Paramount released their Transformers prequel Bumblebee to a surprising critical reaction and a Certified Fresh rating of 91%. Part of the Rotten Idea here relates directly to that: rather than continuing from that point (after five Transformers movies that ranged from 15% to 58%, all Rotten), Paramount is opting for new reboot projects. The reason for dropping the solo Transformers spin-off concept of Bumblebee is probably related to the 8 million Bumblebee made versus the + billion the two previous Transformers movies earned, but there s also no guarantee that new reboots will do any better, either. Anyway, we learned in January that Paramount is indeed developing two separate Transformers reboots from separate screenwriters. The two screenwriters ostensibly still working on rebooting Transformers are James Vanderbilt (Indepdence Day: Resurgence, White House Down) and Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, itself an attempt to start a new franchise that didn t take off). Paramount didn t give any premise details for either project, but around that time, there was a rumor that one of them might be Beast Wars, the Transformers line that transforms into animals instead of modes of transportation. Here are some other possible premises.FEBRUARY: UNIVERSAL TO MEET THE MISTER FROM FIFTY SHADES OF GREY AUTHOR (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Wasting very little time, from 2015 to 2018, Universal-owned Focus Features released their three adaptations of the Fifty Shades trilogy (Fifty Shades of Grey, Rotten at 25%; Fifty Shades Darker, Rottten at 11%; and Fifty Shades Freed, Rotten at 12%). In February, just before the idea of people getting super intimate without masks seemed in possibly extremely bad taste, a heated bidding war, Universal Pictures also won the rights to author E.L. James 2019 novel called The Mister. The book tells the story of a wealthy British aristocrat who falls in love with his Albanian housekeeper, unaware that she is on the run from human traffickers. E.L. James next novel has not yet been announced, and there has been no news about The Mister since February.MARCH: VIN DIESEL CONFIRMS SEQUEL PLANS FOR THE LAST WITCH HUNTER (Photo by Scott Garfield/©Summit Entertainment)Vin Diesel has arguably become synonymous with his most successful franchise, the Fast Furious movies. Obviously, he stars in other movies (like this year s comic book adaptation Bloodshot, Rotten at 35%, or as the voice of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies), but when most people think of Vin Diesel, they probably think Fast Furious first. Perhaps looking for another possible franchise (especially with Fast Furious 11 in 2023 or so expected to be the last in that run), Diesel is now talking about his plans for a sequel to the 2015 fantasy action adventure The Last Witch Hunter (Rotten at 17%). It s understandable if you can t remember that The Last Witch Hunter was even a movie (people will probably feel the same way in 2025 about Bloodshot), as it only earned million domestically. Vin Diesel confirmed in March that Lionsgate has hired a writer for the sequel (though he doesn t drop their name), and that he s sometimes approached by fans who want to see him and Michael Caine return for a sequel. (Michael Caine, incidentally, turns 88 in March, so it might be overly optimistic to expect him to return for another medieval action adventure.)APRIL: NICOLE KIDMAN THRILLER THE OTHERS GETTING MODERN REMAKE (Photo by (c)Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)There is a strong argument to be made that 2001 s The Others (Certified Fresh at 83%) is a close-to-perfect claustrophobic ghost story that is only aging better (partly because its visual style has been adapted by other scary movies in the last 15 years). The Others worked despite its hinging upon a twist ending during a time (late 1990s, early 2000s) when many, many horror or suspense films had such twists. One would think, therefore, that a story like The Others would be impossible to remake, since the twist is already out there for anyone who saw the original. Regardless, that s exactly what is happening, as a modern retelling of The Others has been reported to be in development at least twice this past year. The remake s producer, Renee Tab, said of the project, It is almost eerie and uncanny how timely the themes are today: self-isolation, paranoia and fear, and of course the intense desire to protect our children and ourselves from harm. From a 2020 perspective, one has to wonder if the remake will involve a mother keeping her children in the house because of fears of them catching a deadly virus. Universal s production partner on the remake will be Sentient Entertainment, which also gave us the TV miniseries Feud: Bette and Joan.MAY: YET TO BE RELEASED G.I. JOE SPINOFF SNAKE EYES ALREADY GETTING SEQUEL (Photo by Jaimie Trueblood/Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Due to COVID-19 shutting down many movie theaters, many movies that had been scheduled for 2020 have instead been shuttled back roughly a full year to a similar date in 2021. The thing is, most moviegoers, even those who are specifically G.I. Joe fans, probably don t even know right now that Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas) filmed a G.I. Joe spin-off in 2019 about the mute ninja assassin Snake Eyes, which was one of those movies that got bumped back a full year from 10/23/2020 to 10/22/2021 (i.e. two years after it was filmed). Despite the Rotten RT scores for both G.I. Joe the Rise of Cobra (Rotten at 34%) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (Rotten at 28%), and without knowing what the reaction to Snake Eyes might be, Paramount Pictures is still moving forward with development of a Snake Eyes sequel. The sequel was described in May as a deeper expansion and exploration of the G.I. Joe mythology, and screenwriter Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, who previously delivered the historical biopics Race (Fresh at 62%) and Seberg (Rotten at 34%) are the co-writers now working on the sequel.JUNE: GERARD BUTLER TO KEEP ON BUTLERIN : DEN OF THIEVES 2, NIGHT HAS FALLEN(Photo by Susie Allnutt/©Focus Features)In some ways, Gerard Butler is an old school action movie star, but the reasons he resembles 1980s and 1990s stars is that like, say, Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme, his movies frequently have Rotten Tomatometer scores. Those green splotches include 2018 s Den of Thieves (Rotten at 42%) and all three Has Fallen franchise entries: Olympus Has Fallen (Rotten at 49%), London Has Fallen (Rotten at 28%), and last year s Angel Has Fallen (Rotten at 39%). In June, Butler confirmed that that two of his upcoming projects will be sequels. One of them will be Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which Butler described as a fun ride, spreading across North America into Europe and the diamond district of Marseilles. Then, more news about the fourth Has Fallen movie came out last month, including confirmation that the title will be Night Has Fallen.JULY: JENNIFER GREY RETURNING FOR DIRTY DANCING SEQUEL SET IN THE 1990S

Adjusted Score: 88995% Critics Consensus: Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed. Synopsis: As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, veteran cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) carries out another routine assignment: bringing... [More] Starring: Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Timothy Olyphant, Cliff Curtis Directed By: Len Wiseman What the 91st Academy Awards lacked in hosts, it certainly made up for in surprises – at least at the tail-end of the night. (Yes, your ears and eyes were working: that was Julia Roberts naming Green Book as Best Picture and not Roma.) It was also a night for history to be made, with the likes of Spike Lee winning his first Oscar, and Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler becoming the first African Americans to win awards for Costume and Production Design, respectively. Read on for our picks of the night s biggest moments, and check out our full list of the 2019 Oscar winners.Adam Lambert and Queen Open the Show(Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody may be lowest on the Tomatometer among the Best Picture nominees, but the band was top of the night. Joined by Adam Lambert, Queen opened the show performing “We Will Rock You” and then “We Are the Champions,” forcing all actors caught on camera to rock out enthusiastically/awkwardly (Javier Bardem for the win).Fey, Rudolph, Poehler Show they Would Have Made the Perfect HostsSome viewers got their hopes up that perhaps we would get hosts after all when Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler entered the stage following a montage of moments from the year in film. And while they did not stick around to guide us through the night, their introduction to the Best Supporting Actress showed the Academy might be wise to let them next year. Particular highlights: Rudolph’s sultry “Wakanda plans you got later?” to Chadwick Boseman, and her perfect Gaga wail.Regina King Wins Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) 95%If Beale Street Could Talk co-star Regina King was named Best Supporting Actress, and – after an assist getting to the stage from Captain American himself – delivered a heartfelt speech, celebrating her mother, who accompanied her to the awards. “I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone,” said a teary King. She is the first winner in any acting category to win the Oscar without being nominated for a SAG or BAFTA since Marcia Gay Harden in 2000.Brian Tyree Henry and Melissa McCarthy Wear All the CostumesBrian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) introduced the Best Costume Category wearing outfits inspired by all five nominees. We will never forget the image of McCarthy opening the envelope with a rabbit puppet.Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler Make History With Wins for Black Panther (2018) 96%Black Panther costumer Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out favorite Sandy Powell who was nominated twice for Mary Poppins Returns and The Favourite. The 30-year veteran began her acceptance speech by thanking fellow nominee Spike Lee; the BlacKkKlansman director gave Carter her first job on School Daze, and they later collaborated for her Oscar-nominated work on Malcolm X. Next up was the award for Best Production Design, and in back-to-back historic Black Panther wins, Hannah Beachler became the first Black woman to win for Production Design. The production designer behind Beyonce’s Lemonade and all of director Ryan Coogler’s movies gave an emotional speech during which she thanked Coogler for believing in her.Mahershala Ali Wins Second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Green Book (2018) 77%Some pundits thought Can You Ever Forgive Me? co-star Richard E. Grant was set to cause an upset here, but favorite Mahershala Ali took home the prize for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley. The win makes Ali only the second ever Black actor to win two acting Oscars (the other being Denzel Washington). Ali dedicated his award to his grandmother, “who has been in my ear my entire life telling me, if at first I don’t succeed, try, try again.”Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Generate Jackson-Ally Magic with “Shallow”(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)They didn’t even need an intro… The Best Song favorites performed the final song of the night, semi-recreating A Star Is Born’s memorable concert scene: camera lingering behind them, epic build, that wail. “Shallow” – of course – went on to win Best Song.Spike Lee – Finally – Wins His First OscarBOOM-SHAKA-LACKA! Spike Lee won his first competitive Oscar after five nominations. (He was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2016). Accepting the Best Adapted Screenplay award for BlacKkKlansman – along with Kevin Willmott, David Rabinowitz, and Charlie Wachtel – the Brooklyn native stayed on brand: bombastic and honest. During his speech, he drew attention to the date of his historic win, 400 years almost to the day since the first slaves arrived in the United States. In February, Black History Month, the country s most celebrated Black filmmaker was handed the award from Brie Larson and his longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson. It is the third year in a row that a Black writer has won for screenwriting: Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out last year and Barry Jenkins won Best Adapted Screenplay in 2017 for Moonlight.A Best Actress Mega SurpriseThe Oscars proved it still has the capacity to surprise, saving one of the biggest shocks of the night to almost the very end: The Favourite star Olivia Colman upset favorite Glenn Close in the Best Actress category. Less of a shock: Colman gave arguably the best and funniest speech of the night, opening with “It’s genuinely quite stressful” and ending by simply exclaiming, “Lady Gaga!”Alfonso Cuarón Continues Hot Streak for Mexican DirectorsAlfonso Cuarón’s win for Best Director means that Mexican directors have won the category five times since 2014: Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman and The Revenant, Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, and Cuarón for Gravity and, now, Roma.Green Book (2018) 77% Beats Out Favorite Roma to Win Best PictureIf the Best Actress win was one of the biggest wins of the night, it’s closest competition was in the Best Picture category, where Green Book won ahead of favorite Roma. Some pundits had a feeling this could happen, particularly given the Oscars’ preferential voting system, but it was inconceivable to others that any film could stand in the way of Cuarón s masterpiece. Netflix will have to wait another year, at least, before it can take the top honor.Thumbnail image courtesy Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhat were your biggest highlights of the night? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Could music icon David Bowie have experienced the same level of fame in the England portrayed in Epix drama Pennyworth? Creator Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon doubt it.“I think he would be allowed to release that awful first album with ‘Laughing Gnome’ and all that,” Heller told Rotten Tomatoes when we talked to him, Cannon, and cast members recently. “He never would ve met Mick Ronson, and he d still be floating about singing about elves.”Considering the program’s use of anachronistic music – like The Clash and Roxy Music – the disappearance of Bowie from the cultural scene may be the clearest indication of Pennyworth’s nightmare world. It is easy to image Lord Harwood’s (Jason Flemyng) vision of England has little room for him.“I think David Bowie would probably be put into stocks and have vegetables thrown at him,” Cannon added.(Photo by Epix)Despite the easy jokes about making a show centered on Batman’s butler, Pennyworth distinguished itself by re-framing the adventures of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) against the style of the early 1960s and a thought experiment in which the English Civil War did not occur until the time of Queen Elizabeth II. The result was an unexpectedly satisfying debut season and an order for more episodes on EPIX.When the program returns for season 2, one year has passed since Alfie, Thomas, and Martha stopped Harwood’s coup and rescued the Queen. It has also been one year since Alfred killed his father during the senior Pennyworth s attempt to bomb the entire British aristocracy out of existence. In the ensuing chaos, Harwood, Bet Sykes (Paloma Faith), and her sister Peg (Polly Walker) escaped the Tower of London with Harwood resuming his attempt to take over the country. He may not have claimed the title of Lord Protector just yet, but with London, Manchester, and a few other smaller towns resisting his authority, the situation is pretty dicey.(Photo by Epix)Meanwhile, Alfie has worked his way into running a nightclub.“He s taken it over from a good friend of his, Bannon explained. But really his main focus is to save up some money and get out of [England].”The work keeps him busy and away from thoughts about his father. But considering he comes from a generation expected to just carry on through traumatic stress, Alfie’s nightmares linger, and Bannon doubts he’ll ever find help for his various issues.“I think it would be something perhaps that he should look into,” he joked. “I m sure if he lived nowadays in the modern world, he would look into it. Last year, it was something he was experiencing very much on his own and this year people are noticing perhaps that Maybe not that he s unraveling, but there are cracks appearing.”The nightclub itself serves as a glamorous respite from the battles on the front line and another example of that British resiliency.“We wanted London to reflect not just being at war, but the way that they could still celebrate and party in terrible circumstances, which is very British,” Cannon explained.Bannon was, nonetheless, surprised when he arrived on set and saw how swanky the club turned out to be. Expecting a more rundown nightspot, he said, “Mark Scruton, our production designer, had got carried away basically and built this enormous club that was decadent and wonderful and brilliant.”As one of the few new marquee sets, it stands out almost immediately. But the club, and the trouble Alfie gets into in the early part of the season, reflects a tougher challenge ahead — getting his mother to immigrate with him.“She s got to come with him to America,” Bannon said. “I don t think he would leave her behind. The problem is convincing her that America is a good idea. That s the hard bit for him.”(Photo by Epix)Also, for fans of Sandra (Harriet Slater), Bannon thinks Alfie loves her “in his own way,” but it may lead to other conflicts in the future— especially as Esme (Emma Corrin) is still the love of his life. The deteriorating situation in England brings Thomas back to the realm. Now appointed the British station chief for the CIA, his assignment comes with an unspoken directive: the U.S. may be willing to back Harwood over the Queen if the tide of war turns in his favor.“[Thomas s] initial intentions of working with the CIA were for reasons that he believed in,” Aldridge said. “I think he s gone on this journey [and] ending up incredibly cynical and detached from his work.”It makes for a more conflicted Thomas than we’ve seen so far. Nonetheless, Thomas continues to exhibit a boyish nature Aldridge believes only comes out around Martha.(Photo by Epix)“He s trying to do a very good job of playing an adult — I think he was even trying to play kind of older and more responsible than he is — but I think around her, there s kind of an honesty switch that happens. He s less able to bullshit her,” he said. There’s also the possibility that the way he presents himself is all a cover for the beast Crowley (Jonjo O Neill) discovered within him.But Aldridge suggested the beast is more an echo of his son, saying, “I love that was brought into it, and the idea was that it s something that he shares with Bruce.”That said, working for the Company in his new capacity may force Thomas s beast to reappear.Fighting the good fight all this time, though, is Martha. In the wake of the season 1 bombing, she continued to ally herself with the remnants of the No Name League and the Queen’s loyalist coalition.“She s kind of willing to sacrifice anything for that, almost to like a selfish degree,” Paetz said.(Photo by Epix)It means she spends plenty of time on the front lines. and it quickly becomes clear she likes the thrill of it all. Which leads to one question about future events: Will she be able to let that go some day to settle down in Gotham?“I don t think that she can really, entirely, now,” Paetz said. “It brings up questions like, ‘What does it mean to be a vigilante?’ [and] ‘Do you feel like you re doing something for the good of everyone, or actually, is it satisfying something in you, because it feels good for you to do it?’ In theory, she’s fighting a very noble cause that she does believe in, but it really satiates something in her that doesn t really have anything to do with the cause itself.”Martha’s thirst for adventure and justice in the series represents one of the largest expansions of the character in any medium. A happy addition, to be sure, even if it seems at odds with Batman’s memories of her.Although, it is always possible Bruce just doesn’t acknowledge the lives his parents led.“A lot of people say to Ben and I, ‘Oh, there s like this kind of almost stoic archetype that Thomas and Martha fall into, as his parents, how was it stepping into those roles?’ But I think that, to me, a lot of that seems like it s centered around Batman in the comics,” Paetz said. “Thomas and Martha are [the memory] of someone whose parents had died tragically young, [and] is their idea of who they might ve been — airbrushed and edited out and idealized, more than they actually were.”If that is the case, it allows for Batman’s eventual parents to become more fully realized here than ever before.(Photo by Epix)A handful of new faces will also be joining the show, including Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox, Jessica De Gouw as Melanie — described by Heller as a “dangerous character. The more you re attracted to her, the more dangerous she becomes.” — and James Purefoy as Alfie’s old commanding officer, Captain Gulliver Troy. He also happens to be Melanie’s husband, which will add another layer of danger to Alfie’s interactions with her.But the first fresh face viewers will meet is Salt, a high value target to the Queen s league played by Edward Hogg. Though unassuming in his first few scenes, Heller noted “authoritarians come in all shapes and sizes” when asked about the character.“Everyone dismisses [someone like Salt] as too low class, too provincial, too vulgar, not a heroic enough a character. Those people can, especially in times of change, in times of conflict, push their way to the front,” Heller said. The producer noted Hogg plays both “the very real, serious threat” hidden in the character and “an amount of pantomime villainy” necessary in a show sharing its ancestry with Gotham.(Photo by Epix)And much like Harwood, Salt represents part of the rising tide of fascism within the series’ antagonists. To Heller, fascism is a tough opponent to crack as it is seductive — “What man has not pictured himself in knee-high leather boots?” he joked — and noted even Batman exhibits certain fascistic tendencies in his war on crime.“He doesn t form a political party. He doesn t make it political. He makes it personal,” Heller explained. “If you think the solution [to Gotham’s problems] is destruction, that s sort of fascism. That s the essence of it. Batman is precisely struggling with Christian charity and the old eye-for-an-eye stuff.”Paetz, meanwhile, hopes the tide of authoritarianism can subside.“Can anyone be inherently evil and therefore, will evil manifest itself in fascist forms of government throughout history? I hope the answer is no,” she said. “That people are not inherently evil, there is good, and we can nurture and fight our way out of this.”Bannon joked: “Bruno keeps writing things that keep happening in real life and we keep begging him, ‘just write a nice world where everyone gets on and it s all fine,’ but he keeps telling us that s not very interesting for a TV show.”Heller’s writing also makes the cast apprehensive about what they may find if the show ever moves to Gotham City. Paetz would like to see a kitschy America where “everybody is served by movie star.”(Photo by Epix)Aldridge admitted he wouldn t want to see the myth of America dispelled, even if it seems at odds with the U.S. that Thomas actually knows.“Whenever Thomas references Gotham, he says that it s complete chaos on the streets,” he said.Bannon, meanwhile, said, “I ve stopped trying to guess things with Pennyworth because I always get them wrong, or anything I guess is by no means as exciting as what Bruno comes up with. So who knows? I mean, I dread to think.”Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, EPIX will run four episodes across the next month. The final six episodes of season 2, which will feature the arrival of Batman’s ally Lucius Fox in larger role, will air later in 2021.Pennyworth season 2 premieres on Sunday, December 13 on Epix.On an Apple device? One of the biggest movie franchises on the planet expands outward with Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw. The spin-off stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham as their respectively titular characters from the Fast and the Furious series as they reluctantly team up to take on a superhuman villain played by Idris Elba. What ensues is less a F F movie than a silly superhero action movie, according to its first reviews. You mostly get what you expect, plus a standout Vanessa Kirby and surprise cameos, if you’re just interested in dumb popcorn fare. Here’s what critics are saying about Hobbs Shaw:How does it fit in the Fast Furious franchise? The spin-off film is nigh unrecognizable from the gritty low-level crime days of early Fast and Furious, and even the high-stakes heists of the more recent films.  Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmToo sci-fi for the world of Fast Furious… the bionic stuff is anathema to the franchise’s core, meat-based values.  Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIt’s all a little sci-fi for the Fast Furious franchise, though it’s arguably no more ridiculous than launching parachute-sporting cars out of planes.  James Mottram, Total FilmIt’s a Fast Furious movie that doesn’t really care that it’s a part of the franchise.  Germain Lussier, io9What really stands out from this Fast movie is how little help it needs from the franchise for it to work.  Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderDoes it meet expectations otherwise? It delivers some bangs and laughs for your buck.  Peter Bradshaw, GuardianIf you liked Johnson and Statham’s big jailbreak in Fate of the Furious and thought you’d want to see a whole movie of that duo, then you’re in luck. And it’s as awesome as you’d hoped. Edward Douglas, The BeatIt’s not going to change your life but if you are looking for a silly, over-the-top entertainment with very likable leads than there is more than enough to enjoy here. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netI get it, you, the audience, have bought a ticket for the punches and perhaps the punchlines… But do we not deserve better? J. Don Birnam, Splash Report(Photo by Frank Masi / © Universal)How is the chemistry between Johnson and Statham? The back and forth banter between the two of them is hilariously written, and their deadpan delivery is incredible. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentHobbs Shaw is anchored by excellent comedic chemistry between Johnson and Statham, building on their dynamic from the previous film and ensuring laughs are in ample supply. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewJohnson and Statham do have great chemistry and comedically play off each other well. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThe actors always feel like they’re trying to outdo each other. At times, that chemistry works well, but eventually it gets a little repetitive and numbing. Germain Lussier, io9Simultaneously the best and worst parts of the film are Hobbs and Shaw’s arguments… these scenes start to drag once they’ve been going on for over five minutes straight. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmIs Idris Elba a satisfying villain?Idris Elba as the evil Brixton Lorr is phenomenal. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentElba is truly savage throughout in a could’ve-been-Bond performance of action and brute force. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsElba allures through all that relentless cyborg glint, but he nonetheless feels like an unwelcome visitor from a different franchise. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)Who really owns the movie? For all the hyper-male puffing, Hobbs Shaw is most memorable for the opportunities it gives to Vanessa Kirby. Donald Clarke, Irish TimesIt’s a pleasure to watch Kirby go from cigarette-addled Princess Margaret on The Crown to this commanding bit of action-heroing. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairI was particularly impressed with Kirby, who holds her own. Rachel Wagner, RachelReviews.netWhat I love about the character is that she doesn’t have to sit around and let the men fight for her… her fight scenes are amazing and prove her range as an actress. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentWhat s all this about cameos? Some of the film’s biggest laughs come courtesy of two scene-stealing cameos that we won’t spoil here. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewHas some great surprises for the audience with a few A+ cameos. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderThese cameos are a delight to stumble upon, and I would suggest you go in not knowing who you’ll see. It adds to the magic of the film. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe film gets weighed down by its self-indulgent excess and distracting cameos from the cast and crew’s best buddies. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by © Universal)This is all that matters: How is the action? The action scenes are where Hobbs Shaw truly excels. Candice Frederick, The WrapThe action in the film is off the charts. Some scenes are sure to leave your jaw on the floor. Ashley Menzel, We Live EntertainmentBoasts a chase sequence — featuring a helicopter, a tow truck, and a group of souped-up hot rods — that’s absolutely bonkers. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewThe early action sequences are impressively choreographed but disappointingly limp, delivering none of the bombast that a Hobbs Shaw movie would promise. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmSomewhere around the midpoint of Hobbs Shaw, the action sequences become so elaborate that they start to weigh the movie down. Stephanie Zacharek, TimeIt’s only in the final third when the fight choreography gets a little too incoherent that you realize you don’t give a damn about anything that’s happening. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comIs Hobbs Shaw too cartoonish even for a Fast Furious movie?Hobbs Shaw checks all the boxes for the rousing, over-the-top ludicrousness you’d expect… [but it] tests the limits of that absurdity. Brian Truitt, USA TodayFrom motorcycles that transform and cars that twist in the air, to jumping off buildings and slow-motion fistfights, the whole movie is a cartoon. Germain Lussier, io9It’s basically a cartoon, a machismo-laden thrill ride that borders on parody and is, at times, unspeakably dumb, but in the best possible way. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewIn Fast   Furious, is there really such a thing as too much? James Mottram, Total Film(Photo by Daniel Smith / © Universal)What s really missing here?Without its own identity, without an interesting hook or resonant emotional through-line, most of the movie feels rather shallow — like it’s trying to impress us instead of engage us. Germain Lussier, io9One yearns for the old heart-to-hearts between Diesel and the late Paul Walker…Hobbs  Shaw forgets to maintain the balance of insanity and heart that makes the series special. Brian Truitt, USA TodayBut who needs Oscars anyway, right? When compared to, say, the last five movies to win best picture, there’s a sense that [it’s] doing more to advance film literacy — while bludgeoning all other aspects of our intellect in the process. Peter Debruge, Variety[The Fast Furious movies are] made solely for entertainment purposes, and for the most part, they always deliver. Hobbs Shaw is no exception. Edward Douglas, The BeatFast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw opens in theaters August 2, 2019.
Monday morning saw a brief appearance from Harley Quinn in the form of actor Margot Robbie in a costume test video similar to the one released when Joaquin Phoenix first assumed the Arthur Fleck identity for his upcoming Joker film. The use of the costume test video may not be a coincidence as Harley and Robbie’s next film, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), will presumably see the cinematic Harley shed her Mistah J for keeps. But the video also offered a few quick looks at some of the other castmembers – this is a Birds of Prey film after all – so let’s take a look at what we know about the production so far and glean what we can from their introductions to the world via the video. The Premise(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Based on a concept originally created by DC Comics editor Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Batman comics writer Chuck Dixon – and later expanded upon by writer Gail Simone – the Birds of Prey consisted of three people: former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, a Gotham City vigilante known as the Huntress, and long-time Justice Leaguer Black Canary. In the guise of Oracle, Barbara sent Huntress and Black Canary on missions while coordinating from her watchtower in Gotham. The concept proved popular. It also defined Barbara’s role in the DC Universe for decades to come. The film will follow the same basic idea with one notable change in the dynamic: the apparent absence of Barbra Gordon. Which leaves one to wonder if Harley will join the team or create it herself? The Team(Photo by Margot Robbie)As plans solidified, Birds of Prey quickly evolved into a Harley Quinn feature. The character was a break-out star in Warner Bros.  Suicide Squad and the studio wasted no time securing Robbie for more adventures as Harley, leading to a production deal. Initially, the plan was to spin her off into a film based on the Gotham City Sirens concept Harley teaming up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman with Suicide Squad director David Ayer slated to direct. This soon changed into a feature for Harley and Jared Leto’s Joker and a Birds of Prey film. In April of 2018, Cathy Han agreed to direct the picture after Robbie championed her to the studio. On November 20, 2018, Robbie released a photo to her Instagram declaring the full title as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), confirming the film would focus on the one-time criminal. Warner Bros. quickly confirmed the new subtitle was no joke. But shortly before the title reveal, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell joined the cast as Huntress and Black Canary. As mentioned above, the characters are key elements of the Birds of Prey concept. Based on an alternate-Earth daughter of Batman and Catwoman, the modern Huntress debuted in 1985 as Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a mobster who sought revenge on Gotham’s organized crime apparatus. Armed with crossbows, she did plenty of damage and eventually came to Batman’s attention. She eventually steered away from vigilantism, joining the Birds of Prey and, eventually, the Justice League.(Photo by Warner Bros.)In the clear shots of Winstead in the teaser, we see her working with crossbows; but the rest of Helena s nun-inspired costume appears to be left behind in the comics. It suggests a continuation of Suicide Squad s aesthetic with a further grounding of the characters looks.Backing Helena up is Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. As the character dates back to the Golden Age of Comics – August 1947’s Flash Comics #86 to be exact – her history is a little more complicated thanks to various revisions and reboots. But the most stable elements remain across her various versions: Dinah Lance is an accomplished second generation hero with an impressive metahuman sonic cry. Granted, she has been known to lose her power at the whim of editors and writers. Nonetheless, she eventually led the Justice League for a time; putting her in the top tier of DC superheroes. In the teaser, we see Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary with a microphone, suggesting the script will take its cues from the 2015 Black Canary series, in which Dinah traded in her work at a secretive government agency to front a struggling rock band. Considering the stylish look of artist Annie Wu’s work on that title, it makes for a great starting place with film’s first live action take on Black Canary. The Allies(Photo by Warner Bros.)While the team was typically made of Oracle, Black Canary, and the Huntress, other heroes joined the group for specific missions and occasional long-term stints. It seems the film will honor this by adding Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain.Montoya first appeared as a beat cop in the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, but soon made the leap to comics, eventually making detective and joining Gotham City’s Major Crimes squad in the pages of the marvelous Gotham Central series. She also eventually adopted the identity of The Question when its originator, Vic Sage, died halfway up a snowy mountain. Of course, that was a universe or two ago, but ideas like that never permanently disappear. In the video, Perez brandishes a baton, backing up earlier descriptions of the character as working for the Gotham City Police Department. We’ll assume she is on an active hunt for Harley, but eventually allies with her and the rest of the team.(Photo by Warner Bros.)Finally, Basco will play Cassandra Cain, proving Batgirl is represented in the film just not the one you d expect. The character debuted in the 1999 Batman storyline No Man s Land. She adopted the Batgirl identity after Helena was forced to abandon it for reasons too complicated to get into here. But both used the same costume – an all black suit with a full mask and a yellow bat-shaped outline emblazoned on the uniform s chest. The full mask truly set Cassandra apart as she was initially mute, but since her father was an infamous assassin who trained Batman in his younger days, Cassandra was a born fighter and swiftly welcomed into the Bat family. She eventually found a voice and traded in the Batgirl identity for Black Bat. Nowadays, she is known as Orphan. In the teaser, we see a younger Cassandra brandishing a cast, but nonetheless poised for a fight. It seems she is a long way from adopting the Batgirl identity – or any costumed look for that matter – but will be able to take care of herself when the inevitable fighting occurs. According to reports, she will discover an item which sets the plot into motion. The Bad Guys(Photo by Warner Bros.)The item Cassandra reportedly finds is a diamond belonging to Roman Sionis, a Gotham crimelord also known as Black Mask. As seen in the teaser, Ewan McGregor will lend his looks and talents to the part. Considering his alter ego’s cryptic mask, you might expect some sort of terrible disfigurement to befall Sionis at some point. It could happen, but in the comics, most of his scars are internal. Now better known thanks to his time on Fox’s Gotham series, Victor Zsasz has been one of the more interesting second-tier villains to come to prominence since his 1992 debut. He is a nihilistic serial killer who cuts tally marks in his skin to keep his kill count fresh in his mind. It is unclear if Zsasz (played in the teaser and Birds of Prey film by Chris Messina) will work with Sionis the way his Gotham counterpart (played by Anthony Carrigan) worked with the various members of that series’ organized crime world, but it would not be a shock.(Photo by Warner Bros.)Meanwhile, there is still the possibility the Joker will show up to spoil the party. For one thing, if the film really is the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, that separation from an overriding presence in her life cannot happen off screen. And even if she claims it did, Joker isn’t the sort to just let her disappear. Then again, there is a haunting story in the pages of the Injustice comic book in which Harley reveals to Black Canary that she left Joker for a year to have their daughter. When she returned, he never noticed she was gone But Black Mask’s presence also suggests a surprise return of Mistah J. In the 2013 video game Batman: Arkham Origins, Sionis is presented as the main antagonist until Joker reveals it was all just a ruse to draw Batman out into a direct confrontation. It is always possible Joker could be using this tactic on Harley.Granted, that’s just speculation. It is just as likely that Harley’s emancipation is from a life of crime by joining (or forming) the Birds of Prey and stopping Sionis plan.Meanwhile, the tease leaves us with one new mystery: the woman holding the bat. It’s far too early to speculate on that shot in any meaningful way, but it is worth noting Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and the current Batgirl script were written by the same person: Bumblebee’s Christina Hodson.Birds of Prey (and the Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is currently scheduled to open on February 7, 2020.
(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved)For those who have read the book and seen the previous mini-series, the following is a refresher on some of the names, places, and conflicts in the source material.WHEN IT TAKES PLACEThe answer to this question depends on the version of The Stand we re referring to. King first released the novel in 1978, making the story in the book transpire in 1985. An unabridged edition of the book was released in 1990 and four years later, the CBS mini-series hit television taking the story into the ’90s.Now, it looks like the upcoming series will take us into present day. This time around, the story will be told in a non-linear manner. Instead of beginning at the inception of the virus, showing civilization s decline into madness, the CBS All Access mini-series will start smack-dab in the apocalypse after Captain Trips has ravaged almost all of humanity. It ll be through Lost-like flashbacks that audiences will get introductions to important characters and be exposed to bigger pieces of the overall story.WHAT’S THE BIG CONFLICT?(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved)After the end of the world, what happens to the remains of civilization? Instead of simply following a group of survivors as they battle hordes of undead zombies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, King evokes a war between good and evil to decide humanity s fate. The Stand separates the remainder of society into two factions: those who follow the saintly 108-year-old Abigail Freemantle (aka Mother Abigail), and the ones who side with the sinister Randall Flagg. In the newly released teaser trailer, the clip begins with Mother Abigail appearing to Frannie Goldsmith in the middle of a cornfield telling the pregnant woman to come see me at Hemingford Home. This is how Abigail brings her followers together, through dreams beckoning them to the fictional Nebraska town.Flagg s power comes in the form of manipulation and influence, appealing to the darker natures of humankind. It s through the presentation of his supernatural abilities (necromancy, divination, and an uncanny influence over animals, to name a few) that brings an allure to the survivors who wish to exploit this barren landscape to create a new society built out of their own self-serving wants and desires. Flagg s army sets up shop in the land of excess and sin, Las Vegas, Nevada, which is pretty on-brand for the Dark Man if you ask us.Towards the end of the teaser trailer, we get a glimpse of Mother Abigail coming face-to-face with a menacing wolf on what appears to be her dining room table. In the book, Flagg sent wolves to murder a character named The Kid who was sort of a temporary sidekick to The Trashcan Man — a mentally disturbed individual who had a penchant for setting things on fire. The Kid revealed to The Trashcan Man he had plans to overthrow Flagg once he arrived in Las Vegas. That didn t go as planned, though, as Flagg succeeded in killing the guy. There has been no mention of this character appearing in CBS All Access s upcoming adaptation, but by the looks of things, Flagg may still be using his wolf-controlling abilities to instill fear in his enemies.Randall Flagg has appeared in roughly nine of King s novels (eventually showing up as a dastardly wizard in the Dark Tower series — it s theorized that he appears in more books under different names), but made his debut in The Stand. It s been said the new series will take deviations from the book, which makes it very possible we ll get different perspectives of the character — who is also known as The Dark Man, The Hardcase, and The Man in Black, among other monikers — which may provide a more connective glimpse at one of King s more notorious boogeymen. When all is said and done, the big conflict here is the struggle for ownership of the world; it s a proverbial heaven-or-hell battle that will dictate the overall future of humanity.LOCATIONS WE’RE LIKELY TO SEE(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved)The Stand is an expansive story that literally takes its readers from sea-to-shining-sea. Each character featured in the book begins in their own specific city before ending up in Boulder, Colorado — the city where the virus was created in the book, and the location where the big battle takes place.Given that the new series was shot entirely in British Columbia, Canada, we re unsure where the story will take us. We already know Mother Abigail resides in Hemingford Home, Nebraska, and Randall Flagg will set up shop in Las Vegas, Nevada. That said, here s a rundown of where some of the characters are from.Stu Redman — Arnette, TexasFrannie Goldsmith and Harold Lauder — Ogunquit, MaineGlen Bateman — Woodsville, New HampshireTom Cullen — May, OklahomaLarry Underwood and Rita Blakemoore — New York CityNadine Cross — South Barnstead, New HampshireJudge Ferris — Peoria, IllinoisLike this? Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Marvel s The Eternals, Ghostbusters, Scooby-Doo, and The Suicide Squad. This WEEK S TOP STORYIDRIS ELBA TO REPLACE WILL SMITH IN THE SUICIDE SQUAD(Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn switched teams to join Warner Bros. and their DC Comics movies (following his forced departure from Disney and Marvel over controversial joke Tweets). WB hired Gunn to do something of a soft reboot on The Suicide Squad, and at first, it was reported that the second movie would feature an all-new team of supervillains. This week, we learned that detail is only partly true, as the characters of Harley Quinn and Deadshot will return, but the rest of the team will be new. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, but it won t be Will Smith we ll be seeing as Deadshot, as Idris Elba has signed on instead. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be one day over five years after the first Suicide Squad (8/5/2016). As for which DC Comics supervillains will be joining Deadshot and Harley Quinn in the sequel, Collider.com has what they report is the list. Reportedly, the new villains will include Ratcatcher (gender swapped as a woman), the eccentric Batman villain Polka Dot Man, Peacemaker (who was adapted as The Comedian in Alan Moore s Watchmen), and King Shark, who was a memorable character on TV s The Flash. As for what Will Smith will be doing with his free time in 2019 instead, he signed on this week to star in King Richard, which will tell the true story of tennis coach Richard Williams, the father of future tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams.Fresh Developments1. MARVEL S THE ETERNALS TO FEATURE FIRST LIVE-ACTION GAY LEAD SUPERHERO (BUT WHO?)(Photo by Marvel Comics)The last few years have seen a series of firsts in live action superhero movies: Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel all represented important first steps (and the news of movies like Blue Beetle and Shang-Chi being developed represent others yet to come). As first reported by the ThatHashtagShow podcast, Marvel is now seeking a (preferably openly gay) actor aged 30-49 (of any ethnicity) who physically looks like a superhero for one of the leads in next year s The Eternals. The story seemed to be confirmed by Marvel production chief Victoria Alonso, who, when asked about it, replied, the world is ready. Marvel has not yet announced a release date for The Eternals, but it s probably the untitled project scheduled for November 6, 2020 (presuming Black Widow is the film scheduled for for May 1, 2020). As for which of The Eternals might be the gay character in question, of the three known leads, Ikaris would seem most likely, just by process of elimination (the other two confirmed leads being Sersi and the childlike Piper). Other possibilities include Makkari (based on Mercury), Thanos brother Starfox, and even Hercules (who s not one of the Eternals in the comics, but could be adapted that way for the MCU).2. GUILLERMO DEL TORO S SECRET ZANBATO ACTION MOVIE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)A few months ago, Guillermo del Toro (Academy Award winner for The Shape of Water) revealed that he had over 15 screenplays written and ready to go. Included in that list was Secret Project (Untitled). Now, we still don t know for sure what that project is, but we did learn about a previously unknown film that has been in development for the past six years. The movie is called Zanbato, and although we re still missing many details, it s described as an action movie about a young girl (in the 10-15 year old range) with amazing fighting abilities like a ninja. Del Toro is attached not just to write but also to direct Zanbato for Paramount Pictures by way of J.J. Abrams Bad Robot as the production company. Meanwhile, del Toro is currently in pre-production on his adaptation of Pinocchio for Netflix.3. FINN WOLFHARD, CARRIE COON JOIN THE NEW GHOSTBUSTERS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)It was less than two months ago that we learned that Sony Pictures is fast-tracking a new Ghostbusters to be directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Tully, Up in the Air), the son of the first movie s director, Ivan Reitman. (Sony also gave us a quick teaser trailer to boot, featuring one of the franchise s most iconic props.) Two weeks later, Sony announced that the new Ghostbusters has been scheduled for release next summer for July 10, 2020. Many details aren t yet known, but the new film will be a direct sequel to the original film that does not use the continuity of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. We can however now report that Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War, TV s Fargo) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) have been cast as a mother and son who are central to the new film. How their characters connect to the original Ghostbusters isn t yet known (this writer s best guess: Egon s daughter and grandson?).4. INVISIBLE MAN REBOOT BECOMING INVISIBLE WOMAN INSTEAD?(Photo by Take Five/Hulu)A couple of weeks before the release of the 2017 reboot of The Mummy, Universal Pictures made a big push to promote their Dark Universe made up of similar classic monster movies. And then The Mummy opened to disappointing box office numbers, and by the end of that year, Universal s plans for movies like Bride of Frankenstein (which would have come out February 14, 2019) were scrapped. Even if the Dark Universe doesn t happen, Universal still has a lot invested in these properties, and so some of them will still eventually get made. One of them was The Invisible Man, in which Johnny Depp would have starred. This week, it was confirmed that Depp has disappeared from the reboot, with Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid s Tale) now in early talks to star. Details aren t yet known (such as whether it would be called The Invisible Woman), except that Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3) is now writing and will direct the reboot.5. THIS WEEK IN MECHA: METAL GEAR SOLID, GUNDAM, EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 (Photo by Nippon Sunrise courtesy Everett Collection)However one defines mecha, whether it be human-sized (like Iron Man) or gigantic (like those in Pacific Rim), mecha in Hollywood are still not as prevalent as they are in, say, Japanese anime. This week, however, we learned of development progress for three science fiction projects, all based on pre-existing material, which are likely to feature mecha. Let s start with the Metal Gear Solid movie, based on the popular and long-running Konami video game franchise. We ve known for a while now that it s something of a dream project for Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, but this week, we learned which actor is most likely to star as Solid Snake: Oscar Isaac. No deal is in place just yet, but Isaac came right out and this week, Metal Gear Solid, that s the one I m throwing my hat in for that one, to which Vogt-Roberts seemed to give a positive response. Another mecha movie now in development is the sequel to 2014 s Edge of Tomorrow (with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt expected to return), which is now being worked on by one of the Monster Trucks co-writers. The mecha in Metal Gear Solid is a supporting element, and the mecha in Edge of Tomorrow are human-sized, but the third movie in the news this week is absolutely puts giant mecha front and center. Comic book (and LOST) writer Brian K. Vaughn is now working on an adaptation of the popular manga and anime series Gundam for Legendary Entertainment.

Abrams closed out the universally beloved, not-controversial-at-all Star Wars sequel trilogy with the universally beloved, not-controversial-at-all Rise of Skywalker…Yeah, that isn’t quite how the catch-up scroll reads on the most recent Star Wars flicks. Instead, the trilogy that began with an almost unanimously adored bang in The Force Awakens had divided and inflamed the fanbase by the time it ended. Depending on which side of the chasm you sat, that ending either provided a fantastic twist and return to form, or it was a total betrayal of promising new story threads – and a certain middle film’s director. In the latest edition of our podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), we are traveling to a controversial title not so far, far away, and asking who got it right when it comes to The Rise of Skywalker: The fans, who awarded it an 86% Audience Score, or the critics, whose reviews put it at 51% on the Tomatometer – the lowest of all live-action Star Wars movies. To assist hosts Mark Ellis and Jacqueline Coley as they pick up lightsabers and choose sides – or, you know, give nuanced thoughts in both directions – is Nerdist’s Dan Casey, who’s such an enormous Star Wars fan that he wrote the book on it… literally. (Well, at least one book: 100 Things Star Wars Fans Should Know Do Before They Die). Will the trio decide that Rise of Skywalker rose to the occasion? Or will they, like so many critics, decide that no amount of Jedi mind tricks can hide a messy story and damaging fan service?Listen Now:  Spotify |  Apple Podcasts  |  Stitcher  |  TuneIn  |  Google Podcasts | Radio Public | Deezer | iHeart | Art19Check in every Thursday for a new episode of Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast From Rotten Tomatoes). Each week, hosts Jacqueline and Mark and guests go deep and settle the score on some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made, directly taking on the statement we hear from so many fans: “Rotten Tomatoes is wrong.”Episode one:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Spider-Man 3Episode two:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Mortal KombatEpisode three:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullEpisode four: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Sister Act 2: Back In the HabitEpisode five: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  The BeachEpisode six: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Hocus PocusEpisode seven:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Vampire In BrooklynEpisode eight: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  VenomEpisode nine: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Ace Ventura: Pet Detective / When Nature CallsEpisode ten: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About the Harry Potter moviesEpisode eleven: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About Batman v SupermanIf you have a suggestion for a movie or show you think we should do an episode on, let us know in the comments, or email us at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.Meet the hostsJacqueline Coley is an editor at Rotten Tomatoes, with a focus on awards and indie coverage but with a passion for everything, from the MCU to musicals and period pieces. Michonne, confirmed that she ll be leaving the series in the upcoming tenth season. By the way — creator Robert Kirkman confirmed that just because the comic series has ended does not mean the show is going anywhere any time soon. As Gurira exits, Thora Birch and Kevin Carroll are joining the cast for season 10. According to executive producer Gale Ann Hurd, Birch is playing Gamma, a Whisperer who is fiercely protective of Alpha, and Carroll is a new character named Virgil who encounters some of our group. He’s going to be desperately trying to get home to his family. The season will contain the comic story line The Whisperer War. And most importantly, you can watch the action-packed season 10 trailer, which debuted at the panel, right now.Another important bit of information: The three movies starring now-departed lead Andrew Lincoln that were originally supposed to air on AMC will instead be released theatrically.Rick Grimes is returning to #TheWalkingDead in an untitled movie coming exclusively to theaters. pic.twitter.com/NMZbfq8nEN Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) July 20, 2019They Laughed, They Cried, They Drank Out of Cups Like That of the Now-Infamous Game of Thrones Coffee Cup–Gate IncidentGame of Thrones cast members took the Comic-Con Hall H stage to say farewell and thank fans for 10 years of support.  Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Liam Cunningham, Jacob Anderson, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Conleth Hill, and John Bradley recalled some of their finest moments and favorite quotes from the series. As moderator James Hibberd of EW noted at the outset, there were no spoilers to avoid.“For the record, I loved all my ten years on #GameofThrones it was a life-changing experience.” Conleth Hill on the series. #GoTSDCC Game of Thrones (@GameOfThrones) July 20, 2019We ll return with more on this panel and some of the more meaningful moments and controversial statements; for one, Bradley still refuses to accept blame for that other now-infamous incident with the water-bottle.Veronica Mars Releases Season 4 a Week EarlyThe crowd in Ballroom 20 was already psyched that their favorite private detective and her friends got the gang back together for a fourth season on Hulu 10 years after the series originally ended, but Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell made the reunion panel, which featured a screening of the revival s first episode, even sweeter for her Marshmallows: as a birthday present for Bell, Hulu released all eight episodes of the season a week early. The Dark Crystal Wait Is Almost OverIt s only been a 37-year wait for Netflix s upcoming series Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which hits the streaming service August 30. It was Netflix who championed the idea of a prequel series featuring the puppet aesthetic from the classic film, Lisa Henson shared with select members of the press earlier in the day.Though there will be some CG effects featured, director Louis Laterrier explained they will just be there to enhance it here and there. The cast features plenty of big names, who all came together with a shared love of Henson s vision and work. I loved how daring and dark [The Dark Crystal] was as opposed to the other projects associated with the Muppets, Mark Hamill, who voices the Scientist, shared to a packed Hall H crowd. The script for Age of Resistance is very very good. I don t care about the trappings of the salary or whatever. You look for projects that are a challenge and stuff you d like to see and it definitely falls into that category. Taron Egerton, who plays the hero Gelfling Rian, agreed. I bit Louis hand off when I got the opportunity to do this. It was an amazing experience. Netflix s The Witcher Clips and Teaser Electrifies Hall HHenry Cavill (Mission Impossible Fallout) once again confessed his love of The Witcher video game series — but this time in front of a packed Hall H panel. When clips and a teaser for the Netflix series based on the best-selling fantasy book series,  started rolling, the crowd cheered every sword swing by his monster-hunter hero, Geralt of Rivia. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and cast members Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Freya Allan (Ciri) joined the former Man of Steel to treat fans to the first look at the series.Renewed for Season 2 Ahead of Its Debut, Amazon s The Boys Shows How Bad Good Can BeAmazon’s upcoming series The Boys tells the tale of five (mostly) ordinary people who take it upon themselves to cut superheroes down to size. It is not the most shocking idea in the series based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, but what viewers will find shocking is the behavior of the superpowered beings on the show. And as executive producer Eric Kripke told a group of reporters at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Friday, real life superheroes would be “Super- Bill Cosby.” The statement stunned those assembled, to which the quick-witted Kripke responded “Is that too soon? Are there still f ing Bill Cosby fans?”His reference to the disgraced comedian and television star who was convicted of aggravated indecent assault in 2018 gets to the heart of the series, in which superheroes are indeed bad actors abusing their abilities to behave like debauched sports stars or Instagram celebrities. It’s provocative material, which may be why Amazon has already renewed the series before its first has even premiered. “We’re half-way through filming the second season of The Boys,” executive producer Seth Rogen said at a fan panel later that day.“Aya Cash will play a superhero named Stormfront,” Kripke said. “Tune in sometime in 2020.”“If there is a 2020,” added Rogen.“Corsets Suck,” Carnival Row Star Cara Delevigne DeclaresA new teaser for #CarnivalRow gives us an extended look at Cara Delevingne s character Vignette Stonemoss. pic.twitter.com/VkA1K1NcC1 Rotten Tomatoes (@RottenTomatoes) July 20, 2019Amazon’s upcoming Carnival Row is interesting mix of Victorian iconography, fairy mythology, detective show. And while appearing at the program’s Ballroom 20 Comic-Con panel, star Cara Delevingne zeroed in on one aspect of Victorian fashion which exemplifies many of the issues the series confronts: corsets.“Corsets suck,” she said when asked about the period details utilized on the the 8-episode series. “They were meant to make women feel put in their place.”Co-star Tamzin Merchant added a more practical issue while acting in one, saying, “It’s hard to have an argument in a corset.”Delevingne noted you can still get angry in one. She also noted Carnival Row’s unique twist on the undergarment with a design made especially for fairy folk, like her character Vignette. Working for Merchant’s rich and spoiled Imogen, Vignette is forced to tied down her fairy wings with an especially-made corset to hide the appendages. To the actor, it is a symbol of the way the fairies — immigrants in the story’s more human world — are meant to hide themselves in a restricted society.“I wish Amazon could give me real wings,” Delevingne added. Though challenging, she said getting the experience of pretend flying was amazing with the “sense of freedom” her character enjoys when not strapped down by societal expectations.“It’s Dickensian with its scope,” creator Travis Beacham explained. Consequently, few ideas on the show will be as simple as Delevingne’s declaration that corsets suck. As he put it, “It’s about finding the most complex answer.”
